- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley. The Yukon Men's Coaches Show continues. Coach Big
- 0:04East, I mean, you know all about this. I don't know the
- 0:08rest of the country does. But Providence took it to Wisconsin on Tuesday.
- 0:13I mean, Devin Carter, Bryce Hopkins lighting it up. Man, they
- 0:18look good in that game. They got a first year coach there that that
- 0:21was pretty impressive. Yeah, I think it's uh, you know, when
- 0:26when when you get a job, it's uh, Bryce Hopkins is as talented
- 0:30as any player in the league. And I think, you know, Devin
- 0:34Carter was, you know, for me, a guy we talked about for
- 0:38one of the you know, for the second team preseason All Conference. So
- 0:42you know, I think, you know, Kim Kim's a smart guy,
- 0:46brought in some talented players with him, uh, you know, from from
- 0:51George Mason. But it was was fortunate enough to inherit, uh, you
- 0:56know, several players, Pierre Corey Floyd. I guess you know it was
- 1:03maybe sometimes that's the difference between, you know, when you take over for
- 1:07a coach that took another job, as opposed to a coach that maybe you
- 1:11know, lost his job. In terms of the overall, I think the
- 1:15Providence program is in really good shape. Yeah, Kim English game from George
- 1:19Mason. One guy he couldn't bring with him. Tyler Kohlik went to Marquette
- 1:25over the last couple of years and he helped them win at Illinois and that's
- 1:29pretty good. Illinois's twenty third in the country at this point. Mark keV
- 1:32with a seven point win and Colic playing on a bat ankle. I'm told
- 1:37five assists, five rebounds averaging fifteen points. I mean, we've been looking
- 1:41at this dude for a couple of years. He is, He's a quality
- 1:44point guard. Yeah, I listen, he's the best quarterback. You know,
- 1:49I don't know if there are point guards anymore. You know, the
- 1:55game's gone positionless and you got to be able to do a little bit of
- 1:57everything. But I don't think there's much argument that that he's not the best
- 2:00quarterback in the country. I think he definitely, you know, impacts his
- 2:06game and his program in a very unique way. And it's you know,
- 2:10it's just it's great for Marquette to be able to have a program a player
- 2:15stay in their program, you know that long and not turn pro. You
- 2:22know, such an impactful player stays with you. It's a great luxury.
- 2:27Yeah. And then you know how much of Milwaukee fans love college hoop,
- 2:30that's for sure. And then the other quest, the other one I wanted
- 2:32to bring up to you is Creighton winning over Iowa, scoring ninety two.
- 2:37My favorite player not in a Yukon uniform is Trey Alexander. Am I right
- 2:40about this? Twenty three points, eleven rebounds, nine assists in that game.
- 2:45Really good. And again, those are three guys that you know they
- 2:50were able to retain that you know probably over the years would turn pro probably
- 2:57all three guys Shotman, Kulkbrenner, and Trey. You know, you so
- 3:04have all three of those guys come back and return of big three like that.
- 3:09You know, that's probably the best three returning players that have returned to
- 3:15any one, single college program in the country. And you know, I
- 3:20think offensively, I know that they look as good as anybody in the country.
- 3:24Yeah, I should say Big East with three teams in the top eight,
- 3:30kind of where they ended up last year. So Big East with some
- 3:34consistent winning programs rolling right now, Indiana coming up. Mike Woodson's their coach
- 3:42with the next he did a good job replacing Mike D'Antoni when I was there,
- 3:45and I really like him. He's done a good job in Indiana two
- 3:47forty six and twenty six, and boy, his starting lineup is huge.
- 3:53That's going to be a challenge, isn't it. I'm looking at some of
- 3:54these guys and the kid wear it. It came from Oregon. He's a
- 3:59monster. Uh. Really that's a big team Yukon's facing on Sunday. Yeah,
- 4:04big physical, you know, big ten team. You know, you
- 4:11know, plays a you know, a big four and five lineup, not
- 4:16necessarily a you know, a four out, you know, but more of
- 4:20a more of a you know four, a five and a four and a
- 4:26half at the four, you know, with the with the sixth year guard
- 4:30Xavier Johnson, who it's it's amazing. I remember, you know, when
- 4:38Kenya was with us talking about Xavier when we first got the job. Uh.
- 4:42And and now I'm going into year six and I'm coaching against them,
- 4:46uh, you know, COVID and and uh, you know, just just
- 4:49just crazy. But yeah, it'll be fun to play big game. It'll
- 4:54be fun to to you know, to hit hit New York City. Yeah,
- 4:58Johnson coming off a footage averaging sixteen and a half. They gotta sophomore
- 5:01to Malik Renault averaging fourteen and a half. I mean they're starting lineup Trey
- 5:06Galloway, another senior average in ten, and they're freshman Mackenzie mcbacco. I
- 5:13think is the way you pronounce that their starters play a ton of minutes.
- 5:16Their bench only produces about nine and a half minutes a game. So is
- 5:19this gonna be one of those games where whatever happens from the bench might be
- 5:24determining what happens. Yeah, you just never know how the you know how
- 5:30the games will play out. You know, it's an early season game.
- 5:33I think both both programs and teams are, you know, or trying to
- 5:41develop a bench, trying to develop their identity, and it's just I think
- 5:45it's a good early season test. Yeah, this coming off the bench gave
- 5:49cups for them. As mister basketball in Ohio, he's probably the one guy
- 5:54who can score off the bench. And speaking of your bench, Samson,
- 5:57Johnson had a couple of good games to start you weren't that please? The
- 6:00other night we're what did you see that you didn't like? And what are
- 6:04you going to work on with him here in the next few days, getting
- 6:08ready for this monster bunch you're gonna face. Yeah, I think, you
- 6:12know, versus the zone, there were chances. I think that you know
- 6:15that he's got to recognize that maybe happened a little bit more off script that
- 6:19you just as a player got to kind of see against the zone. And
- 6:24yeah, I would say, you know, protecting the rim using the athleticism
- 6:27the above the rim athleticism for the lob dougs. I'd like to see that
- 6:34protecting the front of the rim from a defensive standpoint, and and just to
- 6:39you know, rebound the defensive glass the way that he's going after the offensive
- 6:44class. You know, coach our friend Ben Darnell from ninety seven to nine
- 6:48ESPN Sports Radio where the games are broadcast, is always talking about recruiting all
- 6:53the time, and so were you in the back of your mind you're coaching
- 6:56your team, but you do to have a couple of guys coming next year
- 7:00year, do we want to ask you a little bit about Isaiah Abraham mad
- 7:02Noel. What tell me about them a little bit and where do you think
- 7:08they might fit in with the program as as the year goes on next year
- 7:12obviously. Yeah, I think Isaiah is just a you know, our type
- 7:16of guy, you know, very very high level of athleticism, you know,
- 7:23guy that that could be an impact defender, impact athlete at six seven,
- 7:29with some length and some ability to get on both backboards and you know,
- 7:33create a little bit of havoc defensively and you know, potentially, I
- 7:38think the shot looks good where he's got some you know, some three and
- 7:42D ability and just I think some upside that we've been able to tap into,
- 7:47you know, through player development and then a mod I think he's uh,
- 7:53you know, he's he might help us this year if he was here.
- 7:56Uh, just strong guard, really really good player, shoots at guards,
- 8:03like the type of guy that uh, you know again, I think
- 8:07if he came in next month, he's physical enough and it's been well coached
- 8:15enough, and uh is college ready players as I think you could bring in
- 8:22from high school. Yeah, so Abraham Moore of a forward, I'm guessing
- 8:26six seven. Uh, you gotta love Philly guards. I mean, you
- 8:30know, you're a Jersey guy that's really Jersey Philly very very similar geography there
- 8:35and players and stuff really really very different. Educate me on that one.
- 8:41Don't please don't compare us to people from Philly. Sorry no, but Philly
- 8:48guards have usually have a pretty good reputation is being tough. Tough dudes.
- 8:52Yeah, I mean listen, one of my favorite players I've coached in college,
- 8:56I mean on my Mount Rushmore, Fats Russell played from me my last
- 9:00year at Rody same high school mo O tep in Philly, and your Fats
- 9:07is a is one of the major reasons why I'm the coach at Yukon,
- 9:13uh. And he played so well for us that that we want we won.
- 9:18We won so many games that Yukon wanted me to come here. So
- 9:20I got another guy coming in from his from his high school. So that's
- 9:24exciting. He's called a combo guard. What does that actually mean? Because
- 9:28you just said point guards, I really aren't on around anymore. Just I
- 9:33think your ability to to play on the ball and facilitate and also the ability
- 9:39to score, you know, create for others, and the ability to go
- 9:45get your own job. All right, all right, coach, we appreciate
- 9:48it. Uh see you in the big city, the world's most famous arena.
- 9:52Make it your place for the next few days. Over the weekend and
- 9:54into Monday. There we go, Let's go all right, that's Dan Hurley
- 9:58back in a moment, more than you men's basketball coaches show in a moment.
