- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with
- 0:01Speaker 1: us this afternoon.
- 0:03Speaker 2: And us, of course includes the producer of this program,
- 0:08Speaker 2: that would be Cameron D.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Parker.
- 0:11Speaker 2: The deal on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as
- 0:14Speaker 2: in his favorite NFL team that he hasn't been rooting
- 0:18Speaker 2: for or has been rooting for but hasn't been watching
- 0:20Speaker 2: in recent years. I have to open with this. Have
- 0:25Speaker 2: you seen Dak Prescott's comments?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Not recently?
- 0:30Speaker 3: I did see the bombshell yesterday the Cowboys are apparently
- 0:35Speaker 3: shopping Michael Parsons. Okay, Sax's comment related to that, No, it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Was related to the Philadelphia Eagles and what it did.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'd heard about this last night when I got home
- 0:48Speaker 2: after the basketball game last night. But then because this
- 0:52Speaker 2: was comments he made yesterday, and then they played them
- 0:59Speaker 2: on Sports Center this morning, and uh, the anchors were
- 1:05Speaker 2: kind of laughing in the NFL because his comment. He
- 1:09Speaker 2: was asked weigh in on where the Cowboys are as
- 1:11Speaker 2: championship Contenders's. First of all, that's an unfair thing to
- 1:14Speaker 2: ask him because they're just not there. But his question,
- 1:17Speaker 2: he said he does not believe they're far away from
- 1:19Speaker 2: where the Eagles are he said, and they quote, I
- 1:23Speaker 2: feel like we've competed with the Eagles and beat them
- 1:25Speaker 2: for the most part when we played them. I don't
- 1:28Speaker 2: want to say, check the record when the other guy's
- 1:31Speaker 2: holding the trophy, right, So credit to them. They've earned
- 1:34Speaker 2: it and they deserve it by all means. But yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 2: we're very close. I'm okay with that. I mean, it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: it's this quarter it's the quarterback. You gotta be confident.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he's gonna he's gonna speak on behalf of his team.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Now we all know that. Is it close?
- 1:47Speaker 4: No?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Not really.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Eagles are winning super Bowls and reaching super Bowls every
- 1:53Speaker 3: other year. The Cowboys are reaching the wild Card Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 3: every other year at this point.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and be.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Trading away possibly one of the top five top ten
- 2:04Speaker 3: best players on defense in the league this offseason.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So I hope that doesn't happen. My goodness, Let's say
- 2:10Speaker 2: trade him to the Rams.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I feel like that would be a
- 2:14Speaker 3: perfect Aaron Donald's replacement. Yeah, Michael Parsons, pair him with
- 2:18Speaker 3: Jared Verse. Yeah, that'd be good. I'd be all right
- 2:21Speaker 3: with that.
- 2:21Speaker 2: But yeah, it was used to the word very that
- 2:25Speaker 2: had people like smirking and snickering very you're very close really,
- 2:32Speaker 2: so that's that was kind of the react to that.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But again, yeah, he's gonna speak on behalf of his team.
- 2:39Speaker 2: He's gonna, you know, say the things that he believes
- 2:44Speaker 2: his team is capable of.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So yeah, so there was that. A couple other headlines.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, first of all, let me tell folks we have
- 2:51Speaker 2: coming up on the program in a few minutes. We're
- 2:54Speaker 2: gonna hear from Jim Schlosnangle, the long Orange new head
- 2:57Speaker 2: baseball coach.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I mentioned yesterday.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I was at baseball media day yesterday for the University
- 3:02Speaker 2: of Texas. We got to hear from a variety of players.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Will Gasparino also uh Ruders, Luke Harrison, Jared Spencer. Uh
- 3:14Speaker 2: So we got we got to hear from a variety
- 3:16Speaker 2: of players yesterday. And I mentioned yesterday we would hear
- 3:19Speaker 2: from Jim Schlosnekle today and we're going to do that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We're also going to hear from Vic Schaffer, Texas women's
- 3:25Speaker 2: head coach. Third rank Longhorns I think are in the
- 3:27Speaker 2: air right now. We're about to be on a plane
- 3:29Speaker 2: going to Kentucky. They play the eighth rank Kentucky Wildcats.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Tomorrow night in Lexington. We'll hear from VIC this afternoon.
- 3:38Speaker 2: We will also also visit with our good friend Ty Harrington.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Tye uh is gonna be by and large the lead
- 3:49Speaker 2: analyst on those Longhorn baseball telecasts that you'll watch on
- 3:55Speaker 2: SEC Network Plus. And uh, you know, I had several people,
- 3:58Speaker 2: including somebody yesterday on the program text in said, are
- 4:00Speaker 2: we going to be able to watch home baseball games
- 4:02Speaker 2: with no More long More network?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Nope, radio only, Uh listen to Crag and Keith all
- 4:09Speaker 3: year long. No, No, no, I don't want to. I
- 4:11Speaker 3: don't want to mislead people.
- 4:13Speaker 2: If if they want to watch the delicates and listen
- 4:16Speaker 2: to us, I'd certainly be okay with that. But no,
- 4:18Speaker 2: there are ways. It all depends on, like your ESPN
- 4:21Speaker 2: Plus subscription and all.
- 4:22Speaker 1: That kind of stuff.
- 4:23Speaker 3: It's the same way that if you try and watch
- 4:25Speaker 3: Texas women's or men's basketball game that's not on ESPN
- 4:29Speaker 3: or YESPN two or SEC Network, that's correct SEC Network
- 4:33Speaker 3: Plus on ESPN Plus.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's that's.
- 4:36Speaker 2: How that's gonna Now there will be some games that
- 4:38Speaker 2: are going to be on SEC Network and.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Maybe ESPNU or ESPN two or even ESPN.
- 4:50Speaker 2: There'll be some games on those, but for the ones
- 4:52Speaker 2: that aren't on the regular over the air linear offerings
- 4:57Speaker 2: by the ESPN family of networks, the telecasts will be
- 5:01Speaker 2: streamed through ESPN Plus and the SEC Network Plus, so
- 5:05Speaker 2: that's how you would watch those. So Tie is going
- 5:08Speaker 2: to be basically the lead analyst on those. Tie is
- 5:10Speaker 2: going to join us in the four o'clock hour, so
- 5:13Speaker 2: we'll talk some long worn baseball. And the Longhorns are
- 5:15Speaker 2: a little over forty eight hours away from their season
- 5:18Speaker 2: opener Friday night at Global Life Field in Arlington and
- 5:23Speaker 2: the Shriners Children's College showdown As Texas will play Louisville
- 5:30Speaker 2: Friday night at seven.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I do say scheduled for seven.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It is the third game of the day, so it
- 5:38Speaker 2: is possible that it might start a little after that,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but we're hoping that it'll start pretty close to seven o'clock.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So that'll be Friday.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Saturday night at seven they play Ole Miss and Sunday
- 5:50Speaker 2: evening at six thirty they play Oklahoma State. And so
- 5:55Speaker 2: we're gonna hear from Jim Schlosnagel talking about it. We'll
- 5:59Speaker 2: visit with Ty Herring talking about it. So we'll do
- 6:03Speaker 2: that as well. I know you're aware of this. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: know you certainly saw the highlights. You asked me last
- 6:09Speaker 2: night at the Longhorn basketball game if Kevin Durant was
- 6:14Speaker 2: at the game, because it was a throwback game and
- 6:16Speaker 2: there were former players who were in.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Attendance, and I said no, I said, I think they
- 6:20Speaker 1: have a game. Yeah, they had a game.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I didn't realize he was also in the process of
- 6:23Speaker 2: scoring his thirty thousandth career point. Did it from the
- 6:27Speaker 2: foul line last night? He played really well. He had
- 6:30Speaker 2: thirty four points. But the Suns, who've had their struggles
- 6:32Speaker 2: this year, lost to the Grizzlies won nineteen to one twelve.
- 6:36Speaker 2: But Kadi becomes the eighth player all time in NBA
- 6:42Speaker 2: history to reach the thirty thousand point plateau. He was very,
- 6:47Speaker 2: very humble and deferential about it and talk about the
- 6:49Speaker 2: guys who went ahead of him and paved the way
- 6:53Speaker 2: and things of that nature. I think he was asked
- 6:56Speaker 2: at one point about comparing himself in the modern era
- 6:59Speaker 2: to like Lebron, and he laughed, it's like, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: Lebron does his own things. Think about Lebron's at forty
- 7:06Speaker 2: one thousand points, so, but he was very he was
- 7:12Speaker 2: really good about it in talking about his place in history,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and also that it was interesting when I was watching Sports Center,
- 7:23Speaker 2: because I'll watch it late at night before I go
- 7:24Speaker 2: to bed, and then I'll watch it in the morning
- 7:26Speaker 2: just to you know, and make notes and things like
- 7:27Speaker 2: that of the topics of the day. And they were
- 7:30Speaker 2: asking Brian Windhorst, who is of course their bleed NBA reporter,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and they were asking him about where did he think
- 7:43Speaker 2: Kevin Durant's place in NBA history, And he was extremely
- 7:49Speaker 2: complimentary and talked about him being I don't want to
- 7:53Speaker 2: miss quote him, but it was something along the.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Lines of.
- 7:57Speaker 2: The greatest e Z shooter in NBA history, but the
- 8:03Speaker 2: way he does and of course there's that what that
- 8:04Speaker 2: easy sniper?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Easy when he sniper was he's a stream handle.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, And they talked about then he said he thought
- 8:10Speaker 2: it was very very apropos and he said, you know, Kevin,
- 8:16Speaker 2: he said, really should take more shots than he does
- 8:17Speaker 2: throughout his career's average I think twenty shots a game
- 8:19Speaker 2: or something like that. He said, he really should be
- 8:22Speaker 2: around twenty six twenty seven, like many he said, But
- 8:24Speaker 2: the fact of the matter is he's an unselfish player,
- 8:27Speaker 2: so that's why he said he should really have a
- 8:30Speaker 2: lot more points than he has, but because of the
- 8:33Speaker 2: way he plays, in his unselfish nature, that's why he's
- 8:36Speaker 2: sitting at thirty but still eighth player all time. Only
- 8:39Speaker 2: seven others have reached the thirty thousand point Plaid said.
- 8:42Speaker 1: They asked John Moran about it.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Because they lost to Memphis, and he talked about when
- 8:47Speaker 2: an impact Kevin had had, and he said, I hope
- 8:50Speaker 2: he keeps playing, he said. He said, you know, he
- 8:53Speaker 2: does it nice and easy, he said, but thirty k
- 8:55Speaker 2: is not that easy to come up with, he said,
- 8:57Speaker 2: So I hope he's around for a while. And when
- 9:00Speaker 2: the horse said, he still got a lot left in
- 9:02Speaker 2: the tank. So hopefully we'll continue to see Kevin play
- 9:04Speaker 2: for several more years.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Anyway, hopefully we can to see him play next Thursday
- 9:08Speaker 3: at Moody when the Suns come to town and play
- 9:10Speaker 3: the San Antonio Spurs as Wemby and the team makes
- 9:13Speaker 3: their trip up I thirty five, Yeah, that would be good.
- 9:16Speaker 3: What's the mascot's name, Coyote? What's yeah, coyote or he's
- 9:20Speaker 3: just he's just the Coyotes there last night. He was
- 9:22Speaker 3: he was at the game last night. The coyote.
- 9:24Speaker 1: He's pretty tall, like he's got to be like six
- 9:26Speaker 1: or five.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. That's the athletic. Those ears stick
- 9:30Speaker 2: up a little ears help. Yeah, and uh and that
- 9:33Speaker 2: halftime entertainment. Those guys, the acrobatics that they didn't they
- 9:36Speaker 2: didn't do too well. They were missing lots. I saw
- 9:39Speaker 2: him miss a few. Yeah, but they were you know,
- 9:41Speaker 2: jumping off those trampolines and slam dunking and all of
- 9:46Speaker 2: that stuff.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I think I could do that. I can.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I can go out there a halftime, miss a couple
- 9:49Speaker 3: of shots, and then dunk from a trampoline.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I think I could do that. Okay, all right, maybe
- 9:54Speaker 1: we get to get your shot at that someday.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Of course, when I tear my hamstring, then he might
- 9:59Speaker 3: have another near the second half of the game.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Uh huh uh huh yeah, yeah, probably gonna do all right.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Up next, we'll hear from Jim Schlasnegle, Texas Long Orange Baseball,
- 10:11Speaker 2: which we do have inconceivable this hour. So we've got
- 10:14Speaker 2: a lot to get to on the program today. We're
- 10:16Speaker 2: glad to have you with us. Also, the text lines open.
- 10:19Speaker 2: If you like the text into the program, you text
- 10:21Speaker 2: the word Texas followed by your question or comment to
- 10:23Speaker 2: eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rage
- 10:27Speaker 2: may apply. This is AM thirteen under the zone. All right,
- 10:30Speaker 2: let's hear from long Orte's head coach Jim Slasnagel talking
- 10:32Speaker 2: from Texas Baseball. Now, this was yesterday from the media
- 10:36Speaker 2: day availability. We were there, but his availability was pretty
- 10:41Speaker 2: late and the thing we were already on the air
- 10:43Speaker 2: in fact, and that's why I said we would bring
- 10:44Speaker 2: in the comments today.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So here they are, starting with his opening statement.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, despite the weather, super excited, getting what three days
- 10:54Speaker 5: away from first ball game, first road trip, which is
- 10:58Speaker 5: always uh, which is always a good experience. I think
- 11:01Speaker 5: when when guys look back when you have alumni games
- 11:05Speaker 5: and and alumni events and you hear baseball players telling
- 11:08Speaker 5: stories that are usually from road trips. So hopefully we'll
- 11:11Speaker 5: behave ourselves and be in by curfew.
- 11:14Speaker 6: Uh.
- 11:16Speaker 5: But but yeah, it's it's exciting, uh to get to play,
- 11:19Speaker 5: to know you're going to get to play, that's that's
- 11:22Speaker 5: super important, just to know that we're gonna be able
- 11:24Speaker 5: to get the games in with the roof and the
- 11:26Speaker 5: and the and the facility there, and the Rangers do
- 11:29Speaker 5: such a great job. The Shriners being involved really adds
- 11:33Speaker 5: a lot to it. And so we're staying in Fort Worth,
- 11:36Speaker 5: which I'm personally super excited for. I'm going to get
- 11:39Speaker 5: to see some friends, see my children. Coach Sarlow's at
- 11:43Speaker 5: TCU has been kind enough to allow us to go
- 11:45Speaker 5: use the batting cages at TCU on on Friday morning
- 11:48Speaker 5: and get and kind of get out of the hotel
- 11:49Speaker 5: a little bit. So thankful to to coach Sarlow's there
- 11:52Speaker 5: at TCU and and wish them the best to look
- 11:54Speaker 5: in their season opener.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Uh, then the questions he was asked at this point,
- 12:00Speaker 2: and now we're, like I said, a little over forty
- 12:02Speaker 2: eight hours away from the season opening, does he have
- 12:06Speaker 2: a starting lineup set in his mind, adding order positions
- 12:10Speaker 2: on the field, things.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Like that, Oh, you know, I think we're trying to
- 12:14Speaker 5: win the games. You know, you know, I'm not into
- 12:16Speaker 5: exhibitions and just doing things to do things. But I
- 12:20Speaker 5: think on this particular team at this moment, the first
- 12:25Speaker 5: I would say, ten to twelve ish position players have
- 12:29Speaker 5: really separated themselves from everybody else. And so you know,
- 12:33Speaker 5: at different positions. Some of this will depend on Max
- 12:37Speaker 5: be Low's availability and what that looks like for him,
- 12:41Speaker 5: which we're learning getting good. We're getting more and more
- 12:43Speaker 5: good news every day. But we'll play some different guys,
- 12:47Speaker 5: but we're trying to win the games. I mean, this
- 12:49Speaker 5: is a huge weekend for us. If it doesn't go well,
- 12:52Speaker 5: it doesn't kill you, but certainly you can take a
- 12:54Speaker 5: lot of confidence from from it if you do well,
- 12:57Speaker 5: and you know, non conference RPI really matters. And again
- 13:01Speaker 5: it's not the end all either way, but it is
- 13:04Speaker 5: a great opportunity.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Then he was asked about if you're going to ask
- 13:08Speaker 2: about starting lineup, So you're going to be asked about
- 13:10Speaker 2: starting pitching and the rotation and if that is set
- 13:13Speaker 2: up ready to go for this weekend.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure I know who the first two pitchers
- 13:18Speaker 5: are going to be. We're waiting to see how some
- 13:20Speaker 5: guys feel today and tomorrow. I'm not quite ready to
- 13:24Speaker 5: announce it yet, just want to I want to get
- 13:26Speaker 5: through today, but we should be announcing something tomorrow.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Okay, And you heard him, mensa Max Blue being out
- 13:31Speaker 2: of the lineup and being ill of late, So he
- 13:34Speaker 2: was asked for a little more explanation on what Blue
- 13:36Speaker 2: has been going through in terms of illness.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Yeah, he's just been off and on sick, and he
- 13:43Speaker 5: got cleared for full activity yesterday and so now it's
- 13:46Speaker 5: just you know, once he starts running and swinging about
- 13:50Speaker 5: a lot and moving around as long as he handles it, okay,
- 13:55Speaker 5: mostly flu Yeah, I think I think it's I think
- 13:58Speaker 5: he should be fine. He's super tough kid, and if
- 14:01Speaker 5: he tells me he's ready to go, he'll be ready
- 14:03Speaker 5: to go.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So that and then one other from
- 14:07Speaker 2: Jim Slawsnekle this hour, and then I'm gonna hear from
- 14:09Speaker 2: Vick Schaefer a little bit as well. So Texas has
- 14:13Speaker 2: been in the habit of playing these early season for
- 14:18Speaker 2: want of a better term, classics. Really they're not really
- 14:21Speaker 2: tournaments because it's not Winter versus Winner. There are three
- 14:24Speaker 2: games set up against three opponents, so that's more of
- 14:27Speaker 2: a classic or a showdown, whatever you want to tournament,
- 14:30Speaker 2: but it's not really a tournament. But he was asked
- 14:33Speaker 2: if he likes this one because Texas has been alternating
- 14:36Speaker 2: playing either at.
- 14:39Speaker 7: What's the new name for a minute, May Park. Either
- 14:42Speaker 7: it's Dakin or Dykin. I think it's j A, I
- 14:45Speaker 7: k I N. I think he's d I think it
- 14:48Speaker 7: is OK. And uh, you know, they played there last year.
- 14:54Speaker 7: They've been alternating, that's only even number of years, and globally,
- 14:57Speaker 7: Field has been on the odd number of years. So
- 15:00Speaker 7: they've had the early season events because they know they
- 15:02Speaker 7: can get the games in. Like Schloss just mentioned, because
- 15:05Speaker 7: they're played under a roof, you don't have to worry about,
- 15:08Speaker 7: you know, weather delays or anything like that.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And so Schlats was asked for his thoughts.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Does he like doing his Texas has been in the
- 15:15Speaker 2: habit of doing this the past several years under David Pearson,
- 15:19Speaker 2: even prior to that under Roggy Garrito. So the question
- 15:21Speaker 2: was asked, does he like playing and having his team
- 15:24Speaker 2: playing these kinds of events.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Yeah, So I would prefer not to do it in
- 15:28Speaker 5: the first weekend of the season. I love the tournament
- 15:31Speaker 5: and set up, I love the challenge of it. I
- 15:35Speaker 5: would prefer to do it like the third week, but
- 15:38Speaker 5: in which I believe maybe next year we're in Houston
- 15:41Speaker 5: that third week. But it is such an awesome opportunity.
- 15:45Speaker 5: You do know you're going to get to play. But
- 15:47Speaker 5: to answer your question, yes, it was already on the books.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Our opener next year at the University of San Diego
- 15:53Speaker 5: that was already under contract. Tell content keeping us to
- 15:57Speaker 5: a tight budget, so I tried tried.
- 16:00Speaker 1: To pay our way out of one of them.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, he got a deal on the front end.
- 16:10Speaker 5: But no, I'm super thankful for everything, you know. Don't
- 16:15Speaker 5: get me in trouble with that.
- 16:16Speaker 2: But yeah, so they are going to open at San Diego.
- 16:21Speaker 2: That's a real unique ballpark. The long Worns did that. Gosh,
- 16:27Speaker 2: let me think about this. It was either two thousand
- 16:30Speaker 2: and three or two thousand and four. I want to
- 16:33Speaker 2: say it was three, coming off the National Championship season
- 16:37Speaker 2: of two, and Keith Warland and I were out there
- 16:41Speaker 2: and it's had a place called Cunningham Stadium. It's on
- 16:43Speaker 2: the campus of USD and it's sunk down like into
- 16:45Speaker 2: a valley, and it's really cool and there are dorms
- 16:50Speaker 2: beyond the right field fence. And the reason why I
- 16:54Speaker 2: remember this is because Dustin Maeski hit one of those
- 16:57Speaker 2: dorms on the fly with a home run that weekend,
- 17:01Speaker 2: So it was something else. We also saw the Longhorns
- 17:07Speaker 2: have a tough time against the outstanding left hander who
- 17:10Speaker 2: just tragically passed away pretty recently, Brian Mattis.
- 17:13Speaker 1: He pitched for San Diego in that weekend series.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And also because Keith Morland, being as tight as he
- 17:19Speaker 2: is with the Chicago Cubs at the time, had joined
- 17:25Speaker 2: us on the broadcast for like three innings. The one
- 17:28Speaker 2: and only Mark Pryor, who at the time was the
- 17:30Speaker 2: ace of the Cub staff and had pitched at San Diego,
- 17:34Speaker 2: and he just happened to be out there because it
- 17:36Speaker 2: was before pitchers and catchers reported and all that other
- 17:40Speaker 2: kind of stuff, and he was out there and he
- 17:42Speaker 2: joined us prior, of course now the pitching coach for
- 17:44Speaker 2: the Dodgers, but it was so they did open a
- 17:48Speaker 2: season out there at at.
- 17:50Speaker 1: USD and they're going to do that again next year.
- 17:52Speaker 2: All Right, we'll hear more next hour from from Jim Schlostangle.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Let's hear something from Vick Schaefer as his team comes
- 18:00Speaker 2: off that emotionally charged and well executed, you know, big
- 18:06Speaker 2: time win of our second rank South Carolina on Sunday
- 18:09Speaker 2: afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at Moody. And
- 18:11Speaker 2: now they go to Kentucky to play an angry eighth
- 18:14Speaker 2: Frank Kentucky team that comes off being surprised on the road,
- 18:16Speaker 2: lost a couple of nights ago at Old Myth. So
- 18:20Speaker 2: here's Vick Schaeffer starting off with his opening comments.
- 18:24Speaker 8: Oh man, uh well, obviously had a really demanding and
- 18:30Speaker 8: tough week last week, and uh more, kids were so special.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Just love their toughness. I love how they're their will to.
- 18:43Speaker 8: Win, you know, they just they were, especially Sunday. But
- 18:48Speaker 8: as I've talked to you all before about I like
- 18:51Speaker 8: our preparation, like my staff.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Is, y'all have to know.
- 18:55Speaker 8: I mean, it takes so much to get your team
- 18:59Speaker 8: ready for these games that are back to back to
- 19:03Speaker 8: back against these quality opponents, top ten, top fifteen, great coaches,
- 19:09Speaker 8: and so my staff is just doing an incredible job,
- 19:15Speaker 8: probably the best I've ever had. And again, you can't
- 19:18Speaker 8: be great without great people, and that's for players as
- 19:24Speaker 8: well as coaches. And boy, my staff is just doing
- 19:28Speaker 8: an unbelievable job in preparation, being ahead of the curb,
- 19:32Speaker 8: being ahead of the game. We never look ahead. We're
- 19:36Speaker 8: always locked into the team that's in front of us.
- 19:38Speaker 8: But behind the scenes, you've got two more coaches that
- 19:42Speaker 8: are doing their job so that when Thursday night's over,
- 19:46Speaker 8: we're onto the next one and we're ready to go,
- 19:48Speaker 8: or when sunday's over, we're ready on Tuesday. So our
- 19:53Speaker 8: kids are just I'm so proud of them. They've really
- 19:57Speaker 8: shown some toughness and resilience. They know, especially when you're
- 20:02Speaker 8: going to play a team like South Carolina on Sunday,
- 20:06Speaker 8: it's a non.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Negotiable, y'all.
- 20:07Speaker 8: If you don't bring that toughness and competitive spirit, like,
- 20:10Speaker 8: you've got no chance. I mean, not only do they
- 20:13Speaker 8: have a team full of McDonald's all Americans, and they're
- 20:15Speaker 8: highly skilled and talented, but when the great equalizer, y'all,
- 20:20Speaker 8: is the toughness piece. It's the competitive spirit. Like that's
- 20:25Speaker 8: what separates those people living in the top five, top
- 20:28Speaker 8: eight versus the rest of the country. And I like
- 20:33Speaker 8: to think that my teams over the years have had
- 20:36Speaker 8: that toughness piece as well.
- 20:39Speaker 4: And again, it's really a non negotiable.
- 20:43Speaker 8: As I tell my kids all the time, and I
- 20:44Speaker 8: told the other night in pregame, if people walk out
- 20:47Speaker 8: of the Moody when this game's over and they walk
- 20:50Speaker 8: out and they go, wow, Texas plays really hard to
- 20:53Speaker 8: man they're.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Tough, like I'm good, like I can live with.
- 20:57Speaker 8: Whatever happens, but not that like you've got no chance
- 21:03Speaker 8: on Sunday to win that game if you don't bring
- 21:06Speaker 8: those components to the table. So again, obviously a great
- 21:12Speaker 8: week for us, but you can't sit here and slap
- 21:15Speaker 8: yourself on the back and have everybody else walking around
- 21:17Speaker 8: telling you the next best thing since sliced bread. You
- 21:21Speaker 8: got to move on because we got number eight in
- 21:22Speaker 8: the country on the road Thursday night. And that's the
- 21:26Speaker 8: most important thing. I told them after the game. Enjoy
- 21:30Speaker 8: it Sunday with their families and friends. You could even
- 21:32Speaker 8: enjoy it Monday. But when Tuesday, when you walk into film,
- 21:36Speaker 8: when you walk into that weight room, it's Kentucky. And
- 21:39Speaker 8: I sent them a note this morning, you know, and
- 21:42Speaker 8: send them a thought for the day, and then told
- 21:45Speaker 8: them in one word, I said, Kentucky exclamation point, just
- 21:49Speaker 8: want them.
- 21:50Speaker 4: And they've been good about that, y'all.
- 21:52Speaker 8: Like they've really been good in their preparation and their focus.
- 21:55Speaker 8: So I really don't expect anything other than that this week.
- 21:59Speaker 2: All Right, We're gonna here's some more from Vic Shaffer
- 22:01Speaker 2: coming up a little later on Up next inconceivable here
- 22:05Speaker 2: on a Wednesday afternoon on thirteen under the zone. Glad
- 22:08Speaker 2: to have you with us as well, on a chilly,
- 22:12Speaker 2: kind of.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Dank and cold Wednesday.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We are in February after it all, I mean, it
- 22:18Speaker 2: could be a lot worse some other places.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Was it was it two years ago where we had that?
- 22:27Speaker 2: Well, we had a couple of major ice storms. I
- 22:30Speaker 2: guess what twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two or
- 22:34Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Maybe there was.
- 22:39Speaker 2: The one that was really paralyzing. I think that was
- 22:42Speaker 2: twenty twenty one.
- 22:45Speaker 3: What was the one where I had to sleep in
- 22:47Speaker 3: our old old station studio? I think that, Well, how
- 22:51Speaker 3: about twenty twenty two?
- 22:52Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I think you're right.
- 22:56Speaker 2: One of those years was the Texas women had a
- 22:59Speaker 2: Sunday afternoon.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Game at Baylor, and it.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Was Vic Schaffer's first year, so that would have been
- 23:07Speaker 2: two three, twenty four, twenty five, it would have been
- 23:10Speaker 2: twenty one, And they got stranded there in Waco because
- 23:17Speaker 2: the roads were so impassable, and I said, you know,
- 23:26Speaker 2: I thought, I'm not sticking around Waco. It's to my house.
- 23:32Speaker 2: And I was living in Cedar Park at the time,
- 23:35Speaker 2: and so that was definitely twenty one and I thought
- 23:38Speaker 2: I can make it there.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And it took a while, and it was. It was
- 23:42Speaker 1: a little diicy.
- 23:44Speaker 2: It took me probably to go a little over one
- 23:47Speaker 2: hundred miles.
- 23:48Speaker 1: It took me four hours, I think, crawling through it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: It got got home.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that was. That was really bad. And then, like
- 23:56Speaker 2: you said, I guess it was three years ago where
- 23:58Speaker 2: we had it. That that was and that really bothered
- 24:01Speaker 2: me because that was the trip where we'd had the ice.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And then it got a little bit less icy.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And this maybe this was two years ago, and I
- 24:09Speaker 2: was walking out to get things that I'd left in
- 24:12Speaker 2: my truck to do the show.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Oh, I remember this.
- 24:15Speaker 2: And I walked out on three separate occasions, all about
- 24:20Speaker 2: ten minutes apart. Went down, got something, when down, got something,
- 24:22Speaker 2: went down, got something.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Was the way it ended up working out. But there
- 24:25Speaker 1: was more to it than that.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Every single time I went out, no matter how carefully
- 24:33Speaker 2: I stepped or used a handrail, as soon as I
- 24:36Speaker 2: stepped away from the handrail, my feet went out from
- 24:38Speaker 2: under me and I landed, and you know, legs fly out,
- 24:42Speaker 2: land on my butt or on my back.
- 24:43Speaker 1: All right.
- 24:43Speaker 2: So the first two times it was no big deal.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I got up and fell a little silly or whatever.
- 24:47Speaker 2: The third time I landed on my right elbow. I
- 24:50Speaker 2: didn't think anything of it at the time except that
- 24:53Speaker 2: it swelled up like a like a grapefruit and got
- 24:57Speaker 2: all discolored and all that kind of stuff. And I
- 24:59Speaker 2: had to get on a playing to go with women's
- 25:01Speaker 2: basketball to West Virginia, and the trainer looked at it
- 25:03Speaker 2: and said, yeah, you you, you know, ruptured your versa
- 25:09Speaker 2: sack or whatever they're you know, right there by the
- 25:11Speaker 2: elbow and had to wrap it up and it was.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It was a mess for about a week. So that
- 25:16Speaker 1: was a thin.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Me and Jeff Hall had a lot of fun talking
- 25:18Speaker 3: about your bursa sack for the next couple of weeks.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure you did all its sophomore humor and
- 25:23Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. How is your sack by
- 25:26Speaker 1: the way, now, Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just fine.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I can throw fine, you know whatever.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I know we're gonna make a little change
- 25:37Speaker 2: on a couple of things. Ty Herrington was gonna come
- 25:39Speaker 2: on with us at four fifteen. Uh, We're gonna call
- 25:42Speaker 2: him in about ten minutes because it's gonna work out
- 25:43Speaker 2: better for his schedule, and so we'll we'll visit with
- 25:47Speaker 2: Tye here coming up in a few minutes, and uh,
- 25:51Speaker 2: and then we're gonna we're gonna continue to hear from
- 25:56Speaker 2: Vic Shaeffer. In fact, I'd like to hear a couple
- 25:57Speaker 2: of comments from Vick right now and then and then
- 26:00Speaker 2: we'll talk to Tie about some long winn baseball. We'll
- 26:02Speaker 2: hear more from Jim Schleisneigel coming up as well. But
- 26:06Speaker 2: with regard to Vic Shaffer, we heard his opening comments.
- 26:10Speaker 2: They also and we'll hear some comments from Brianna Preston,
- 26:14Speaker 2: the long Orange freshman guard tomorrow who's continuing to make strides.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And Vic was asked what Bree brings to this team
- 26:22Speaker 2: and how she's meshed with the older players.
- 26:25Speaker 8: I agree completely she I couldn't say it better. You know,
- 26:29Speaker 8: when I was recruiting her, man, I could just look
- 26:31Speaker 8: at her. She's like my kind of player. Y'all know
- 26:35Speaker 8: you've been in the arena. She just brings an energy
- 26:38Speaker 8: and you know, I'm blessed with a two headed monster
- 26:42Speaker 8: at five, I'm blessed with fast and electric at point guard.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Like that's what we have.
- 26:48Speaker 8: Typically, you have a point guard that's kind of your
- 26:51Speaker 8: half court speech and run your stuff. But and then
- 26:55Speaker 8: you've got one that changes gears a little bit. Well,
- 26:58Speaker 8: I got one that's already in that chain, and then
- 27:00Speaker 8: I got another one that's even in another gear.
- 27:03Speaker 4: And so we're really blessed with that.
- 27:04Speaker 8: But replays with such emotion, such passion. She's got all
- 27:08Speaker 8: the sayings, y'all, Like you know what the kids say,
- 27:12Speaker 8: and they're cliches.
- 27:14Speaker 4: And all that.
- 27:14Speaker 8: I mean, I can't keep up with all of them,
- 27:17Speaker 8: but she's got them all. You know, whether it's her
- 27:19Speaker 8: money thing or whatever it is, it's but you know,
- 27:24Speaker 8: that's what's fun. Like, that's fun for me to watch kids.
- 27:27Speaker 8: As long as they're not disrespecting our opponent or disrespecting
- 27:31Speaker 8: the game, they're having fun with it.
- 27:32Speaker 9: They're having fun with.
- 27:33Speaker 8: Each other, Like her and Jordan, it's like an aerobics
- 27:36Speaker 8: class over there on the sideline when they're not in
- 27:38Speaker 8: the game, Like they're just having so much fun. They're
- 27:42Speaker 8: into what they're doing, they're supporting their teammates. They're great teammates.
- 27:46Speaker 8: And so she's right, she is. She plays with that
- 27:50Speaker 8: passion and that emotion and she's got a smile on
- 27:54Speaker 8: her face, you know, and I've got a lot of
- 27:56Speaker 8: confidence in her. You know, she played some big minutes
- 27:58Speaker 8: for us last week and those minutes will continue to grow.
- 28:01Speaker 8: And again Jordan Lee, same thing. She obviously has done
- 28:05Speaker 8: it most of the year. We got Justice in the
- 28:08Speaker 8: other night and she played a little bit for So
- 28:11Speaker 8: it's nice to have somebody that can give Rory a
- 28:15Speaker 8: breather because it's hard to play at this level thirty
- 28:19Speaker 8: five minutes in those highly intense competitive games, and so
- 28:23Speaker 8: we're really blessed to have breath.
- 28:26Speaker 2: We'll hear more from vic shafor talking about Brianna Preston,
- 28:28Speaker 2: some of the other players as well as the Longhorns
- 28:30Speaker 2: get ready to take on Kentucky to travel to day
- 28:33Speaker 2: to Lexington and they'll play the Wildcats tomorrow night.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And you can hear that on one of three point
- 28:38Speaker 1: one FM.
- 28:40Speaker 2: Austin Cites station five forty five air time at a
- 28:42Speaker 2: six o'clock tip off. All right, up, next, we'll shift
- 28:45Speaker 2: to college baseball. We're going to talk with Ty Harrington
- 28:48Speaker 2: and get some thoughts from him on this brand new
- 28:51Speaker 2: baseball season, not only for the Longhorns, but for the
- 28:53Speaker 2: game overall.
- 28:54Speaker 1: When we continue on AM thirteen under the Zone, we're back.
- 28:57Speaker 8: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame caster
- 29:00Speaker 8: in Voice of the Texas longhearts Craig Way.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Back here on a Wednesday afternoon and something comes to
- 29:11Speaker 2: mind for me.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Several years ago, this was probably.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Around two thousand and five or thereabout, we on the
- 29:25Speaker 2: Longhorn Radio Network gave an opportunity to a twenty year
- 29:29Speaker 2: old young man because we liked his sound, to be
- 29:33Speaker 2: our studio anchor, and he did it for eight years
- 29:37Speaker 2: and was really really good at it. He was so
- 29:39Speaker 2: good at it, in fact, that he was so good
- 29:45Speaker 2: at it, in fact, that he moved on.
- 29:51Speaker 1: As a part of.
- 29:53Speaker 2: What we were doing and ended up going to Westwood
- 29:57Speaker 2: One and then ESPN, and he works now for ESPN
- 30:04Speaker 2: and does more Westwood One things now.
- 30:06Speaker 1: His name is Ted Emrick.
- 30:08Speaker 2: And Ted was able to do what he did for
- 30:13Speaker 2: us very very well, served us very very well, and
- 30:16Speaker 2: took it and ran with it and expanded his profile.
- 30:21Speaker 2: The reason why I bring this up is because our
- 30:24Speaker 2: next guest kind of followed a similar pattern. No, Ty
- 30:28Speaker 2: Herrington did not make his on air debut with us.
- 30:30Speaker 2: He was working Texas State telecast. He had been doing that,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but Ty got a chance. We were thrilled to have
- 30:37Speaker 2: him work with us last year on a lot of broadcasts,
- 30:41Speaker 2: a lot of our broadcast and Ty was so good
- 30:43Speaker 2: at it that now Ty Herrington is going to be
- 30:47Speaker 2: the lead analyst on those telecasts Longhorn Baseball home games
- 30:53Speaker 2: as produced here for SEC Network Plus. So he dropped
- 31:00Speaker 2: us like a hot rock, and he's moved on the
- 31:02Speaker 2: TV and he joins us now on the hotline.
- 31:03Speaker 1: How you doing, Coach, Well, I'm great.
- 31:09Speaker 9: I don't like a hot rock.
- 31:11Speaker 6: And I've gotta be honestly, man, a lot of my
- 31:14Speaker 6: associates and friends who know me best always felt like
- 31:20Speaker 6: I had a face built for.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Radio more than TV.
- 31:22Speaker 6: I'm not going a lot to you, So I'm stepping
- 31:24Speaker 6: out of balance from their advice, and I'm gonna be
- 31:29Speaker 6: a little bit more of the TV side of it,
- 31:31Speaker 6: as you mentioned.
- 31:32Speaker 10: And it's certainly excited to do all the above. And
- 31:38Speaker 10: I'm sure at some point in time you and now
- 31:40Speaker 10: get a chance to work together on a couple of games,
- 31:43Speaker 10: and things evolve and changes, you know, because you've got
- 31:45Speaker 10: to handle the schedule and changing things all.
- 31:48Speaker 6: The time as it evolves. But I'm excited for to
- 31:53Speaker 6: be involved with to do the Texas games and the
- 31:56Speaker 6: Texas State games, and.
- 31:59Speaker 9: I'm selfishly.
- 32:02Speaker 6: I'm excited, like college baseball is finally here.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And you know how.
- 32:09Speaker 9: Big a football fan I am.
- 32:11Speaker 6: I grew up in a football family. My dad of
- 32:13Speaker 6: a high school and college football coach. I you know,
- 32:18Speaker 6: I loved football. You know, there's always I love baseball.
- 32:21Speaker 9: But man, it's time.
- 32:25Speaker 6: And it's it's time to start ringing the bells and
- 32:30Speaker 6: start talking about the path, the Oma Hall and and
- 32:33Speaker 6: conference championships. And uh, you've already experienced the SEC and
- 32:38Speaker 6: a couple of sports, and I franky blee. You know,
- 32:44Speaker 6: people can talk about different sports and how tough.
- 32:46Speaker 9: They are in the SEC. I think they all are. Certainly.
- 32:51Speaker 6: You know football comes to mind basketball now because we're
- 32:54Speaker 6: in season, But you and I had discussions before when
- 32:58Speaker 6: you know, before during last year, the last year of
- 33:01Speaker 6: the Big Twelve for the Texas baseball program, that the
- 33:04Speaker 6: baseball and the SEC is unbelievable.
- 33:08Speaker 9: Yeah, and the facilities, the.
- 33:12Speaker 6: Influence, the national champions the crowds. Man, it is going
- 33:18Speaker 6: to be an unreal experience for this first year for
- 33:21Speaker 6: Texas fans.
- 33:23Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And by the way, it was just joking on that
- 33:26Speaker 2: about the about dropping us like a hot rock. And
- 33:28Speaker 2: Ty is still going to be able to help us
- 33:30Speaker 2: on some selected radio broadcasts here, so we look forward
- 33:32Speaker 2: to that as well. But uh, and I want to
- 33:36Speaker 2: get into talking about the SEC and I and I
- 33:38Speaker 2: want to ask you about slots, and I want to
- 33:40Speaker 2: ask you about some.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Other things as well.
- 33:42Speaker 2: That's why I wanted to have you on here two
- 33:44Speaker 2: days before the season opener. But first let me let
- 33:46Speaker 2: me circle back to you, because for folks you don't know,
- 33:49Speaker 2: you're still going to work on the Texas State telecast
- 33:52Speaker 2: with Brant Freeman as well, So that's really cool you're
- 33:54Speaker 2: getting a chance to work both. The schedules kind of
- 33:57Speaker 2: worked out that way, didn't they wear you buying large
- 34:00Speaker 2: could still work a pretty regular schedule in Texas State
- 34:03Speaker 2: and work the regular schedule long n home games.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I did, And ironically this year worked better than
- 34:09Speaker 6: it's ever worked. It seemed like when Texas State was
- 34:12Speaker 6: on the road, Texas Is at home, vice versa, and
- 34:16Speaker 6: some Tuesday matchups seemed to work.
- 34:18Speaker 9: Out as well.
- 34:20Speaker 6: And uh, and then obviously, you know, timing lives for
- 34:23Speaker 6: me to to be able to handle my day job,
- 34:26Speaker 6: my real job too, and so it all worked out
- 34:29Speaker 6: really good.
- 34:30Speaker 9: Uh. And then also getting this year, I'll i'll.
- 34:34Speaker 6: Actually bet in Arlington for the opening uh for the
- 34:38Speaker 6: Texas Longhorns at the Globe Life. I'll be working for
- 34:41Speaker 6: Flow Sports and uh and doing uh the opening weekend
- 34:45Speaker 6: there and as if you are accustomed to knowing that,
- 34:50Speaker 6: regardless of what the leather is like opening weekend at
- 34:53Speaker 6: Central Sun Life.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a nice that's a nice thing. Uh.
- 34:59Speaker 2: And uh, as Tigh Harrington joins us the Shriners Children's
- 35:02Speaker 2: College Baseball Showdown. Uh, we'll have three games a day Friday, Saturday,
- 35:06Speaker 2: and Sunday. It starts off on Friday. Pretty good matchup
- 35:09Speaker 2: between a lot of a couple of teams that wear orange.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Fifteenth rank Clemson, number seventeen Oklahoma State. That's the noon game,
- 35:17Speaker 2: and then what follows at four o'clock is number twenty
- 35:20Speaker 2: one Arizona against Old Miss, and then of course the
- 35:24Speaker 2: night game is Texas and Louisville. Now, which which are
- 35:28Speaker 2: you doing? Two games a day? Is that how that's
- 35:30Speaker 2: working for you?
- 35:32Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 35:32Speaker 6: Well, we'll do two to one two, And I gotta
- 35:35Speaker 6: go back and remember which one minor or I don't
- 35:37Speaker 6: I don't actually get the opener for Texas. I keep
- 35:41Speaker 6: them on Saturday and Sunday.
- 35:44Speaker 9: And but man, you're right, I mean, you know, it's
- 35:48Speaker 9: a it's a it's a true test.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Look.
- 35:51Speaker 6: I mean, you're you're opening up against you know, everybody
- 35:54Speaker 6: in there is going to be ranked, and you know
- 35:56Speaker 6: and postseason pasted and pedigrees, and.
- 36:01Speaker 9: You know, we've already had a handful of.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Coach UH conversations in the interviews, and you know, everybody's
- 36:08Speaker 6: you know, this time here is incredibly excited about their
- 36:11Speaker 6: teams UH and their personnel, and everybody is ready to
- 36:14Speaker 6: try to go on the field and see what it
- 36:15Speaker 6: looks like. But well, you tell you it's it's a
- 36:18Speaker 6: tough tash. You're gonna find out in a hurry. A
- 36:21Speaker 6: lot of good things are going to get exposed and
- 36:23Speaker 6: some some challenges will get exposed.
- 36:25Speaker 2: A little bit earlier, visiting with Ty Harrington here on
- 36:27Speaker 2: AM thirteen hundreds, All right, Ty, let me get your thoughts.
- 36:31Speaker 2: We talked about it after Jim Slosmigel was hired at Texas.
- 36:35Speaker 2: UH since we last conversed all their about that. Of course,
- 36:39Speaker 2: he's uh assembled his team, put it together. Our good
- 36:42Speaker 2: friend David Pearce is on uh on on the staff
- 36:45Speaker 2: of Stephen Trout down at Texas State, and uh that
- 36:48Speaker 2: looks like that's going to be a good fit and
- 36:50Speaker 2: all that. How about your thoughts on the you know, now,
- 36:53Speaker 2: as these two programs get set to go forward with
- 36:56Speaker 2: their seasons, Texas was Schloss and then Texas State.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Getting ready to start it season as well.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I think we lost him there, so we'll, uh, we'll
- 37:11Speaker 2: try and reach it back right when I got to
- 37:13Speaker 2: the really good.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Question there, So we'll.
- 37:16Speaker 2: We'll get him back on line there and and we'll
- 37:22Speaker 2: ask him and again. The first matchup will be Oklahoma
- 37:26Speaker 2: State and Clemson.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Uh that's at noon.
- 37:28Speaker 2: The second matchup is Ole Miss Arizona, and then Texas
- 37:31Speaker 2: and Louisville.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Okay, So so.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Now UH ties back with us right when I got
- 37:35Speaker 2: to the meat and potatoes question for you, tye, and
- 37:38Speaker 2: and and it was it was the question of uh
- 37:41Speaker 2: now with uh, you know, with when we you know,
- 37:45Speaker 2: visited in the off season right after Schloss had taken
- 37:49Speaker 2: the Texas job and and got some fill in from
- 37:53Speaker 2: you on that, and then since then our good friend
- 37:56Speaker 2: David Pierce now on uh uh, Stephen Trout's after your
- 38:00Speaker 2: former assistant, the head coach at Texas State, and I
- 38:02Speaker 2: wanted to get your thoughts on both of these programs
- 38:05Speaker 2: as they get set to embark on somewhat new frontiers
- 38:09Speaker 2: for this coming season.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:12Speaker 9: You know, I had a chance to see Texas State.
- 38:16Speaker 6: In the fall play a couple of times outside competition
- 38:19Speaker 6: and had some early preseason practices or I got to
- 38:23Speaker 6: stick my head in there and watch, and they are
- 38:25Speaker 6: really talented, very physical, incredibly athletic on the infield side
- 38:31Speaker 6: and with depth as well, and I you know, the
- 38:35Speaker 6: pitching side of it was exciting and fun to watch.
- 38:39Speaker 9: They ran some guys out there. I watched the Lost
- 38:41Speaker 9: Kids run out.
- 38:42Speaker 6: There at ninety nine ninety eight to ninety nine miles
- 38:45Speaker 6: an hour. And so they've done a really good job
- 38:48Speaker 6: of putting together a really good, really good looking, physical,
- 38:53Speaker 6: athletic pitching depth team. And so it's going to be
- 38:58Speaker 6: exciting for coach Strout and his bo I do think
- 39:01Speaker 6: with the addition with the staff they already have in place,
- 39:05Speaker 6: but then also the addition of coach Bierce, who is
- 39:07Speaker 6: a longtime friend of mine, who's been in this business
- 39:11Speaker 6: a long time, and you know, was able to move
- 39:13Speaker 6: down the road thirty miles And look, I think anytime
- 39:16Speaker 6: you can get anybody with his kind of experience on
- 39:19Speaker 6: your staff and knowledge, it's a huge help. And I
- 39:23Speaker 6: think it'll be I think it'll work out great.
- 39:25Speaker 9: For Texas State.
- 39:26Speaker 6: I really do it, and Coach Trout to have somebody
- 39:29Speaker 6: there that to bounce different things off of and to
- 39:32Speaker 6: talk about different scenarios, and so I do. I think
- 39:35Speaker 6: that's a win win for everybody and for them at Texas.
- 39:39Speaker 9: State, to be honest with you.
- 39:40Speaker 6: And look, we've already you know, we've talked a little
- 39:44Speaker 6: bit about coach Slashenegle, and look, he's a really innovative,
- 39:50Speaker 6: cutting edge coach.
- 39:52Speaker 9: I mean it's rare that he's chasing the trend.
- 39:56Speaker 1: He's usually leading the.
- 39:57Speaker 9: Way and pushing the envelope.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Uh to create success, to stay on the front end
- 40:03Speaker 6: of an ever changing sport, and baseball has changed, even
- 40:07Speaker 6: though the fundamentals of it are similar and it will
- 40:10Speaker 6: always be, but the data and being able to get
- 40:14Speaker 6: to you know, the different frontiers of of of you
- 40:17Speaker 6: know how you know, spin rates, exit via all these
- 40:21Speaker 6: things that have come into play and being able to
- 40:24Speaker 6: communicate them and being able to make sense of it
- 40:28Speaker 6: is huge, and I think it's a tremendous strength. Uh
- 40:31Speaker 6: of course Los Angles and his staff and uh and
- 40:35Speaker 6: so that look, I think if you're a Texas fan,
- 40:38Speaker 6: you've got a lot of things to be incurdibly excited
- 40:40Speaker 6: and looking forward to, particularly going into the SEC how
- 40:46Speaker 6: that happened. And you know everywhere Jim has been he's one,
- 40:51Speaker 6: So that's a care I mean, he's got the formula right,
- 40:54Speaker 6: He's got something that and I know and having faced him,
- 40:58Speaker 6: you you get to see a lot of it. It's
- 41:00Speaker 6: a very detail oriented program.
- 41:02Speaker 9: Uh, the players are very detail.
- 41:04Speaker 6: Oriented game day wise everything and practice wise.
- 41:08Speaker 9: And you'll see you know, last.
- 41:10Speaker 6: Year, you and I talked about this, remember back in
- 41:12Speaker 6: middle of March last year, and we were talking about
- 41:16Speaker 6: who's the best team in the country and a lot
- 41:18Speaker 6: of you know, people, a lot of listeners of yours
- 41:21Speaker 6: and on the program or Longhorns obviously for being in
- 41:24Speaker 6: an Austin area and people that pay attention, and it
- 41:27Speaker 6: was it was hard for them, you know, people to
- 41:29Speaker 6: understand kind of what you and I were talking about
- 41:31Speaker 6: that you know emotionally that A and M was probably
- 41:35Speaker 6: the best team in the country at that point in time.
- 41:38Speaker 6: And I felt very strong and I think you did too,
- 41:40Speaker 6: that they were and they certainly played out that way.
- 41:42Speaker 6: Who knows what happens at Montgomery doesn't get hurt, yep,
- 41:45Speaker 6: And you know, prior to the World Series, that's their
- 41:48Speaker 6: best player.
- 41:48Speaker 9: It's hard.
- 41:49Speaker 6: It's hard to imagine going into a World Series, UH
- 41:52Speaker 6: without your best player and uh and then you lobby
- 41:56Speaker 6: Lette was even you know, limping down the end of
- 41:59Speaker 6: the season life year as well. So point being the
- 42:02Speaker 6: offensive side of what they did, I was really impressed with.
- 42:05Speaker 9: The way their patients at the plate.
- 42:08Speaker 6: Their ability to take walks, their ability to command the
- 42:11Speaker 6: strike zone offensively, and then obviously on the pitching side
- 42:15Speaker 6: of what coach Weener has been able to do on
- 42:17Speaker 6: the data side of it, and being able to engage
- 42:20Speaker 6: his players and to communicate to his pictures, the ability
- 42:24Speaker 6: to throw the ball in the strike zone. It is
- 42:27Speaker 6: so relevant, Craig, and you notice you've seen more baseball
- 42:29Speaker 6: games than anybody probably it's so relevant to be able
- 42:33Speaker 6: to command the strike zone offensively and pitching wise, and.
- 42:38Speaker 9: If you can do that and you can dominate the strike.
- 42:40Speaker 6: Zone them both sides of the baseball, you have a
- 42:43Speaker 6: chance that is a true formula for success.
- 42:46Speaker 2: You brought up a real interesting point, and I was
- 42:49Speaker 2: going to ask you a more broad based question about
- 42:54Speaker 2: what wrinkles might we see in college baseball this year,
- 42:57Speaker 2: what might be different, But I want to circle back
- 42:59Speaker 2: to something just pointed out because this kind of fits
- 43:01Speaker 2: in the category and it's about pitching, and it's about
- 43:05Speaker 2: pitching coaches and strategies and styles. Now you know, it,
- 43:12Speaker 2: like so many other parts of the game, has evolved
- 43:15Speaker 2: over the years.
- 43:16Speaker 1: But I'm curious to get your thoughts.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Has it evolved even further with what you talked about
- 43:21Speaker 2: with the metrics and the things that Max Wiener does,
- 43:23Speaker 2: Because all of his pitchers who were interviewed on media
- 43:25Speaker 2: Day yesterday could not stop gushing about Coach Wiener and
- 43:31Speaker 2: what he does. So I'm wondering, are there in your mind,
- 43:35Speaker 2: from what you know and as close as you are
- 43:37Speaker 2: to several of these guys pronounced differences in styles between oh, say,
- 43:43Speaker 2: Max Wiener and a Skip Johnson or or some other
- 43:46Speaker 2: uh you know, outstanding pitching coaches across the country.
- 43:52Speaker 9: Yeah, just briefly you said between.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Max and.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he pronounced differences in styles and strategies and how
- 44:00Speaker 2: they go about it, because you talked about the metrics
- 44:04Speaker 2: and what and and they all use different formulae and
- 44:07Speaker 2: metrics and things of that nature. But uh, but for
- 44:11Speaker 2: that to be a situation where his pictures to a
- 44:15Speaker 2: man yesterday just gushed about Max Weener and what he does.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And I'm just wondering.
- 44:21Speaker 2: If if this is a different way of building a
- 44:26Speaker 2: mouse trap as opposed to say, a more traditional approach.
- 44:29Speaker 9: Yeah, I thinks yes.
- 44:31Speaker 11: So the answer your question is it goes back when
- 44:34Speaker 11: you were just talking about the game evolves and changes, right,
- 44:37Speaker 11: and but the basics of it are still formulated through
- 44:41Speaker 11: all of this, even the metrics, the data, you know,
- 44:45Speaker 11: what the what the it all shows you and and
- 44:48Speaker 11: tells you about it. If you can translate it and
- 44:51Speaker 11: understand it right, it can really be helpful.
- 44:54Speaker 9: But you have to be able to communicate it.
- 44:57Speaker 11: So when you I think, and this is a personal
- 44:59Speaker 11: opinion and and only been around coach, mean know.
- 45:02Speaker 9: Just a little bit, but watch him.
- 45:03Speaker 11: But when you do watch him, he communicates He's able
- 45:07Speaker 11: to communicate some really sophisticated, important information. He has found
- 45:12Speaker 11: a way to get it to his players where it's useful.
- 45:14Speaker 11: You're not talking over them, you're not talking around and
- 45:17Speaker 11: by them, you're talking to them, and you're.
- 45:19Speaker 9: Communicating to him.
- 45:20Speaker 11: I think he does a beautiful job of doing that,
- 45:23Speaker 11: and I think you see the results of it by
- 45:25Speaker 11: the way his pictures perform. Now to the importance of
- 45:29Speaker 11: your your question, Yes, Skip Johnson, who's known as one
- 45:32Speaker 11: of the better pitching coaches, and go down to modern time,
- 45:35Speaker 11: our time as being one of the better college pitching
- 45:38Speaker 11: coaches there is too.
- 45:39Speaker 9: I think he Skip does the same thing.
- 45:41Speaker 11: They've been able to capture a lot of this metrics,
- 45:44Speaker 11: a lot of information that takes a lot of study.
- 45:47Speaker 11: It takes a lot of time to get it and
- 45:50Speaker 11: to be a part of it.
- 45:51Speaker 9: And then you make it useful, Kraig, that's the hard part.
- 45:55Speaker 11: How do you make it important, useful and how do
- 45:57Speaker 11: you communicate it to the to the people that they
- 46:01Speaker 11: can take it to the to the practice field first,
- 46:04Speaker 11: take it to a mindset, second, and then translate it
- 46:07Speaker 11: on the field in competition motions.
- 46:09Speaker 9: Are running hot. How do you do that?
- 46:11Speaker 11: One of the other things I think you'll recognize this
- 46:13Speaker 11: year too about coach tw heenor when when you see
- 46:16Speaker 11: pictures of him in the dugout, those players like to
- 46:20Speaker 11: be around him, Like if you'll watch him, they're communicating
- 46:23Speaker 11: with him, they're talking to him.
- 46:25Speaker 9: He doesn't have a grumpy look on his face.
- 46:28Speaker 11: He's got a really fresh look on his face about hey,
- 46:30Speaker 11: here's here's what we're trying to do.
- 46:32Speaker 6: Right.
- 46:32Speaker 11: There's always a positivity to him that I think attracts
- 46:36Speaker 11: him his players to him as well.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of almost like a pictures version of
- 46:43Speaker 2: what you see with those long horn players gathered around
- 46:46Speaker 2: Troy Tulowitski right the way they like to listen to
- 46:48Speaker 2: too low in the in the knowledge and wisdom, he
- 46:52Speaker 2: can impart to them.
- 46:54Speaker 9: Very much, so very much. So look out.
- 46:57Speaker 11: This happened during the game of Gain Alumni game. We
- 46:59Speaker 11: were talking and Daylem Flora is on during the inning
- 47:02Speaker 11: and uh, which to me was as a player out
- 47:04Speaker 11: the bet. I was so distracted anyway, it was hard
- 47:06Speaker 11: enough to stay engaged. But he was doing such an
- 47:09Speaker 11: unreal job and I asked him, I said, he goes
- 47:11Speaker 11: with with all five fingers in the glove. He doesn't
- 47:13Speaker 11: take the traditional uh index finger out and uh.
- 47:17Speaker 9: And he started to explain why.
- 47:19Speaker 11: How he does it and why he does it, and
- 47:21Speaker 11: it was all built and based around too Low and
- 47:24Speaker 11: how he did it, and.
- 47:26Speaker 9: So he he likes to emulate him too.
- 47:28Speaker 11: So that tells you that there's not only just a
- 47:31Speaker 11: physical side of what he's teaching them, there's an emotional
- 47:34Speaker 11: uh attraction to it too.
- 47:36Speaker 9: They they want to they want to be like him.
- 47:38Speaker 9: They they're bought in.
- 47:40Speaker 11: That means not only that they bought in by his
- 47:42Speaker 11: actions and how he does things, but they want to
- 47:44Speaker 11: be like.
- 47:44Speaker 9: Him, So they answer you quick. Yeah, it's very much
- 47:46Speaker 9: so the same.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Yeah, very good. Uh, he's ty Arrington.
- 47:50Speaker 6: Uh.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Again, you'll get a chance to enjoy his work on
- 47:52Speaker 2: those Hometel and cast Longhorn games on SEC Network. Plus
- 47:56Speaker 2: he'll he'll also help us out still and we're still
- 47:58Speaker 2: going to do our weekly visit, right, we are still doing.
- 48:01Speaker 4: That, right.
- 48:01Speaker 11: Well, I'll tell you what this Yeah, there's gonna be
- 48:05Speaker 11: there's gonna be so much information out there this year
- 48:09Speaker 11: about SEC, about college baseball, about.
- 48:12Speaker 9: Everything I went through.
- 48:15Speaker 11: And I know you're a big fan of D one baseball,
- 48:17Speaker 11: and you spend time, you know, you know, digging into there.
- 48:20Speaker 9: And if there's so much information.
- 48:22Speaker 11: Uh from those guys as well, I started going through
- 48:25Speaker 11: and started looking at the SEC for the first time.
- 48:27Speaker 11: I mean, I've always paid attention, but now I really
- 48:30Speaker 11: got to pay attention. And there's so much in depth
- 48:32Speaker 11: information out there. And I think that I think the
- 48:36Speaker 11: true Longhorm fans are gonna be really excited about that.
- 48:38Speaker 1: I really believe that.
- 48:39Speaker 11: I think they're gonna be excited about there's more, you know,
- 48:42Speaker 11: more information out there the people that come to Dishfalk.
- 48:45Speaker 11: And I will say this too, having visited with with
- 48:48Speaker 11: coach slish than go about this a couple of weeks ago.
- 48:52Speaker 11: He talked about all the all the programs in the
- 48:55Speaker 11: SEC since he'd been in it for the two years
- 48:58Speaker 11: at A and M, and just how the crowds were
- 49:01Speaker 11: and how excited he was about being at a place
- 49:03Speaker 11: where two where the crowds have always traditionally been big
- 49:06Speaker 11: at the University Texas, right, it's important college baseball here
- 49:09Speaker 11: has been important well way before.
- 49:12Speaker 9: I got here, way before you and I got here.
- 49:14Speaker 9: It'll be important way beyond us being here.
- 49:18Speaker 11: And he was excited about that, that building that crowd,
- 49:22Speaker 11: getting it even bigger and bigger each time through the
- 49:24Speaker 11: excitement of the SEC UH and the game day experiences
- 49:28Speaker 11: you know, has grown, has become really important and fun
- 49:30Speaker 11: there at UFC Dishfalk, and so I just think it's
- 49:35Speaker 11: just going to electrify it now with the SEC teams
- 49:38Speaker 11: coming in and you start looking at that schedule, that's impressive, right,
- 49:41Speaker 11: I mean, that's that's.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Pretty that's fun. Yeah, looking forward to it. Hey, I
- 49:45Speaker 2: appreciate it. I'll see you up in Arlington this weekend.
- 49:49Speaker 2: I look forward to it, all right. That's Ty Harrington,
- 49:52Speaker 2: the coach, and he joins us each week to talk
- 49:55Speaker 2: college baseball, and again he'll be working the telecast UH
- 49:59Speaker 2: there on the SEC network plus telecast of Longhorn home games,
- 50:02Speaker 2: and again he'll we'll work him in also as available
- 50:08Speaker 2: with our Long Run radio broadcast. Keith Morland rejoins us
- 50:13Speaker 2: as our primary analyst for Long Horn Baseball this season.
- 50:15Speaker 2: We're looking forward to that with the season opener on
- 50:18Speaker 2: Friday night, Texas against Louisville.
- 50:22Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Vic Shaeffer coming up when we continue on AM thirteen
- 50:27Speaker 2: under the Zone. I want to jump back to college
- 50:29Speaker 2: baseball for a moment before we hear more from Vic Shaeffer.
- 50:32Speaker 2: The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Very Augur and Austere group.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Outstanding Guys.
- 50:41Speaker 2: The National Collegiate Baseball Right Association have announced the Stopper
- 50:46Speaker 2: of the Year preseason watch list. And there's a bunch
- 50:49Speaker 2: of guys on the list, and I think they're nine
- 50:53Speaker 2: out of the SEC alone who are on the list.
- 50:59Speaker 2: One returning first Team All American ben a Belt of
- 51:01Speaker 2: TCU is part of that, but John Armstrong of Auburn,
- 51:10Speaker 2: Andrew Benke of Tennessee is part of that group.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Brian Curley of Georgia.
- 51:17Speaker 2: These are SEC guys, Kristin Vouch of Arkansas, Simon Gregorson
- 51:23Speaker 2: of Kentucky, Miller Green of Vanderbilt, Robert Hogan of Kentucky.
- 51:29Speaker 2: So there's two Kentucky Wildcats on that list. Two Auburn Tigers.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Hayden Murphy is on that list. And let's see Nate
- 51:39Speaker 2: Sneaed of Tennessee is on that list. I guess that's
- 51:44Speaker 2: all of the SEC other than Ruger Riojas, the UTSA transfer,
- 51:50Speaker 2: who was a long one. We heard from him yesterday
- 51:52Speaker 2: he is on this preseason Stopper of the Year watch list.
- 51:59Speaker 2: On that on the text line, somebody said, could you
- 52:03Speaker 2: ask Hi how the Bobcat shape up this season? We did,
- 52:05Speaker 2: and he did this said he really likes but this
- 52:07Speaker 2: is somebody else stated talking about Matt Patricia taking over
- 52:10Speaker 2: his defensive coordinator, Ohio State said his New England defenses
- 52:13Speaker 2: were always effective in shutting down the likes of Steve
- 52:16Speaker 2: Van Buren and Hugh mcallaney. All Right, so I feel
- 52:20Speaker 2: compelled to ask you do you even know who's for
- 52:22Speaker 2: the Okay? Steve Van Buren was a great running back
- 52:25Speaker 2: for the Philadelphia Eagles in the late forties into the fifties,
- 52:29Speaker 2: the forties into the fifties. In fact, his name came
- 52:32Speaker 2: up during the Super Bowl on Sunday because wasn't it
- 52:37Speaker 2: Cooper Jean the Jean's birthday?
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and he had to pick six.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Okay, only the second man to score a touchdown in
- 52:46Speaker 2: a quote unquote World championship game on his birthday, the
- 52:49Speaker 2: other being Steve Van Buren, who did it against the
- 52:52Speaker 2: Chicago Cardinals in nineteen forty seven, a game the Eagles
- 52:54Speaker 2: lost that year, and then the next year to beat
- 52:56Speaker 2: the Cardinals in a blizzard in Philadelphia seven nothing and
- 53:01Speaker 2: he scored I think it was late third or early
- 53:04Speaker 2: fourth quarter. He scored the only touchdown in that game.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And then he had like one hundred and sixty five
- 53:08Speaker 2: rushing yards against the Rams in a driving rainstorm in
- 53:12Speaker 2: nineteen forty nine in Los Angeles. He was from LSU.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Hugh mcalaney was like Steve Van Buren, a Hall of Famer.
- 53:22Speaker 2: So I think Matt Patricia did a pretty good job
- 53:24Speaker 2: against some modern day running backs as well. He just
- 53:28Speaker 2: it didn't work out for him as a head coach.
- 53:30Speaker 2: I thought he was always pretty good coordinator that he
- 53:32Speaker 2: worked out there. All right, let's hear some more from
- 53:36Speaker 2: Long Orange head coach Vick Schaeffer. Now, we were hearing
- 53:40Speaker 2: him talk about Rihanna Preston and she had a buzzer
- 53:47Speaker 2: beater against Vanderbilt, and Vick was asked if the team
- 53:50Speaker 2: tries to celebrate little things that happened within the game
- 53:54Speaker 2: that was at the end of the first half when
- 53:56Speaker 2: she had that.
- 53:58Speaker 8: Yeah, we try to celebrate all those those things like that. Connor,
- 54:03Speaker 8: my video coordinator, he makes a highlight film after every game, y'all.
- 54:07Speaker 4: He's really good.
- 54:08Speaker 8: I wish we could put them on social media, but
- 54:10Speaker 8: we can't. But uh, they're really, really good and our
- 54:15Speaker 8: kids that today when we go to film, they'll be
- 54:17Speaker 8: on the edge of their seats looking forward to seeing
- 54:20Speaker 8: to seeing that one that he creates from from obviously
- 54:23Speaker 8: from from Sunday.
- 54:24Speaker 4: But we do.
- 54:25Speaker 8: We try to celebrate and show all those things. And
- 54:28Speaker 8: I you know, I'm I always want my camera opposite
- 54:30Speaker 8: my bench because I want to watch and see what
- 54:34Speaker 8: my bench is doing. If they're over there sitting on
- 54:36Speaker 8: their hands, I'm gonna I'm on Gridham. You know, whether
- 54:41Speaker 8: you're a starter or you're coming off the bench, whatever
- 54:44Speaker 8: your role is, when you're over there on that bench,
- 54:46Speaker 8: I want to see you into your teammates because I
- 54:50Speaker 8: know what they're doing. Especially those kids that start over there,
- 54:52Speaker 8: they're into the starters. When you're a starter and you
- 54:55Speaker 8: come over there, I need you to be into whoever's
- 54:57Speaker 8: in on the on the floor at that time too.
- 54:59Speaker 8: It's it's only fair, and that's what being a good
- 55:02Speaker 8: teammate's all about.
- 55:03Speaker 4: So there is there's a lot of good things that
- 55:08Speaker 4: we like to show.
- 55:09Speaker 8: And again we've had a lot of good things to
- 55:11Speaker 8: show here lately.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Okay, we'll hear more from Vick Shaeffer coming up. What
- 55:14Speaker 2: be We will be back to wrap up our number
- 55:17Speaker 2: two here on thirteen under the Zone. But here was
- 55:20Speaker 2: a question that was asked of him about how does
- 55:24Speaker 2: he balance because he talks about how proud he is
- 55:26Speaker 2: of his team, and he takes his team is really
- 55:28Speaker 2: really good, but by the same talk and he talks
- 55:30Speaker 2: about how they're still work in progress and trying to
- 55:32Speaker 2: get better and all those kinds of things. So he
- 55:35Speaker 2: was asked, how do you balance believing having your team
- 55:38Speaker 2: believe they're the best in the country while also preparing
- 55:41Speaker 2: for what's ahead.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, that's my job. It's a it's a
- 55:46Speaker 4: it's a balancing act, you know.
- 55:47Speaker 8: I got to try to keep them grounded and focus
- 55:51Speaker 8: one day at a time. That's that's what I tell
- 55:53Speaker 8: him every day. Let's just focus on today, Let's try
- 55:57Speaker 8: to get incrementally better one percent day, and just again,
- 56:02Speaker 8: when you start thinking ahead two three four days, two
- 56:06Speaker 8: three four games, that's when when you're stepping and we're
- 56:08Speaker 8: trying to climb them ountain right and get to that
- 56:10Speaker 8: ultimate level, that ultimate championship. That's when you miss a
- 56:15Speaker 8: step and you follow the way down and so.
- 56:18Speaker 4: Keeping them confident. You know, I have to tell them all.
- 56:21Speaker 8: The time, guys, you have no idea how good you
- 56:26Speaker 8: can be. But at the same time, man, it's it's work,
- 56:30Speaker 8: like there's there's no easy way. Winning is really hard.
- 56:34Speaker 8: Y'all heard me say that a million times, Like it's hard.
- 56:37Speaker 8: It's supposed to be hard. There are supposed to be
- 56:39Speaker 8: struggles when you're a freshman, a sophtoboard. There are that's
- 56:45Speaker 8: part of the journey. And so and I tell them
- 56:49Speaker 8: each year when we're at this point, we're always it
- 56:52Speaker 8: seems like we're always at this point where we're having.
- 56:54Speaker 4: A great year.
- 56:55Speaker 8: You don't take it for granted. Nothing is guaranteed for
- 57:00Speaker 8: us standing here. Tomorrow ain't guaranteed. So embrace and live
- 57:07Speaker 8: the moment right now today, because you don't know what
- 57:13Speaker 8: tomorrow brings, what next year brings, what the next team brings.
- 57:17Speaker 8: So embrace it right now. I know Shay Holly, she's
- 57:21Speaker 8: living every day. She's embracing every day, every moment, And
- 57:27Speaker 8: so that's what you want your kids to do. I
- 57:30Speaker 8: think Taylor Jones, she knows this is it, this is
- 57:33Speaker 8: the last ride. So We've got to get everybody to
- 57:37Speaker 8: really embrace that.
- 57:38Speaker 4: And live it.
- 57:40Speaker 8: I want them to live the success that we're having,
- 57:43Speaker 8: live it, but own it and realize humble and hungry.
- 57:48Speaker 4: That's it again.
- 57:50Speaker 8: Sunday's over hope they enjoyed it, But today it's Kentucky
- 57:54Speaker 8: and that has to be your mindset. And I told
- 57:58Speaker 8: them Sunday, we're gonna find out what are maturity levels
- 58:01Speaker 8: like next week. This week, we're gonna find out by
- 58:06Speaker 8: how they come in on Tuesday, their approach, their focus,
- 58:09Speaker 8: how hard they play, because that's what it's gonna take.
- 58:14Speaker 4: It's gonna take a mature group.
- 58:16Speaker 8: And again we're always talking about consistency. I think we've
- 58:20Speaker 8: got some kids that I feel good about. If they
- 58:22Speaker 8: know where the bus is loading and what time we're loading,
- 58:25Speaker 8: as long as they're on the bus, I feel good.
- 58:29Speaker 8: But now I'm trying to develop some consistency with the
- 58:32Speaker 8: next group, the next part of the team. When you
- 58:35Speaker 8: get that consistency with all fourteen of them, now we
- 58:38Speaker 8: got a chance.
- 58:40Speaker 4: And there's so many plays.
- 58:41Speaker 8: I'm so tempted to show film today and show them
- 58:46Speaker 8: here's one play we didn't make.
- 58:48Speaker 4: This one could have cost us a game.
- 58:50Speaker 8: I could probably show them double digits, you know, one blockout,
- 58:55Speaker 8: one layup, missed, one turnover, one bad pass to a
- 58:59Speaker 8: post player. It's wide open, like I could do that.
- 59:02Speaker 8: I'm not going to, but I want them to understand.
- 59:06Speaker 8: That's how fragile, that's how perfect you almost have to
- 59:11Speaker 8: play in those moments to win those games. And I
- 59:15Speaker 8: thought our execution down the stretch was perfect. Got the
- 59:19Speaker 8: ball in, got it the right people's hands, we met
- 59:21Speaker 8: our free throws, got a great stop.
- 59:23Speaker 1: It's perfect.
- 59:25Speaker 4: That's what it takes to win those games.
- 59:27Speaker 2: It's always maniacal this time of year. It's about to
- 59:30Speaker 2: get what I call overlap number two crazy because the
- 59:35Speaker 2: baseball season starting on Friday. So like tomorrow night, Roger
- 59:41Speaker 2: Wallace will be with the Texas Women they play at
- 59:44Speaker 2: Kentucky tomorrow night.
- 59:46Speaker 1: I'll be here.
- 59:47Speaker 2: We'll have Long Run Weekly with Rodney Terry tomorrow night,
- 59:49Speaker 2: and then I'm going to go right after the show.
- 59:52Speaker 2: I'm driving straight to Arlington Tomorrow night, Friday Long One
- 59:57Speaker 2: baseball season opener against Louisville ge Life Field in Arlington,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: and then I'll come back and Saturday night, the Long
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Horn Men play Kentucky and then Sunday the Texas women
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: play LSU. Roger Wallace will kind of tag team and
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: he'll go up by thirty five and work Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Long Horn Baseball will keep Morland that weekend.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: And then and then we come back and there's a
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: home opener against Houston and then a home series against Dartmouth.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: But we go to South Carolina and then it comes
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: back and anyway, it goes on and on and on,
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: and then it gets real crazy once we get to March.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: But those of us who those of you who have.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Listened to the program, you know that you listen to
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: us and hear us a just on the fly and
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: do all the things that we do, and it's a
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: lot of fun. Obviously, we we have a take a
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: great deal of enjoyment and a great deal of we
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: put a lot of ourselves into it because we're really
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: invested into it and we really enjoy it. Otherwise we
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: wouldn't do all the games and the things that we
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: do and the travel and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: It's it's it's a great reward and we uh and
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: we you know, have to work at it pretty uh,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: pretty diligently.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: And stay up on things. But it's an awful lot
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: of fun we really enjoy.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I wanted to jump very briefly to Major League Baseball.
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: You know, pitchers and catchers for a couple of teams
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: have already reported, except for Anthony Rendome. He will not
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: be reported. Yeah he could be out for a point
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: of the Angels are They're really in a bad way
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: And but that team across town from him is doing
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: pretty good. The Dodgers are in uh. Uh, pitchers and
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: catchers reporting they are. Uh and because they play the
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: Cubs in Japan before anybody else does, like when they
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: played the Padres in Korea last year. So uh, they
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: do that and then ESPN just put this out today,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: the off season winners and losers. As you would imagine,
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: they were gonna rate Dodgers very highly, and they did.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: But they say, yeah, yeah, I know.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I won't spend too much time here, but they have
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: to be mentioned first. After starting the off season with
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: a roster fresh off of World Series title, the Dodgers
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: added Kirby Yates and Tanner Scott to the bullpen, Blake
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Snell and Roki Sasaki to the rotation. By the way,
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: they're looking at starting probably Yamamoto and Sasaki for the
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: games in Japan, which I think is a really cool
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: gesture if they did that. Yeah, and adding Michael confordo
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: he signed Kim to the lineup. They lost only Walker
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Bueller and Jack Flaherty and free agency and Gavin Lux
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: via trade, with all three of those players replaced by
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: one of their free agents signings. They also just resigned
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Clayton Kershaw, that did that yesterday. You'll get a kick
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: out of this. Maybe I've told you about this. Karl
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: Ravitch was doing the Longhorned Men's basketball game for ESPN
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: last night. Rab As so many know, his main Baileywick
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: really is baseball baseball tonight baseball guy does baseball, but
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: he does some basketball, and his son is a basketball
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: play by play guy. Uh and so I was chatting
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: with him last night and I said, Hey, I'm a
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: big Dodger fan.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Heaes, yeah, I know, so he did.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I said, I said, you think Kershaw is going to
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: pass that physical? And he goes, oh, yeah, he goes.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: But you know he's like your ninth pitcher. He said,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: I wouldn't worry too much about that. So but they
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: did resign Kershaw. They also resigned to Oscar Hernandez Key
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: k Hernandez Blake Trining. They also extended Tommy edmund and,
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: while not a free agent deal, this winner. They also
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: will be getting the pitcher version of Shoe a Otani
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: this season. Keep an eye, it says on top one
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: hundred prospect Alex Freeland as a potential edition this summer.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Right to clear the Dodgers from from the Ledger. Because
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: everybody knows what they had. Here's the other teams. They
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: like what they did the Mets. They brought back Sean Manyah.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: They lost Luis Severina in a multi year deal, but
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: they signed Pete Alonzo, Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. They
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: like the Tigers. Glaber Torrez landed him and they resigned
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Jack Flaherty as well. They added Alex Cobb to the
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: rotation and Tommy Kingley to the bullpen Losers. If you
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Dodger Fanny love this Padres. It's pretty widely known that
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Padres had a number of penning free agents and not
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: a lot of flexible payroll flexibility, so they weren't expected
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: to have a loud winner. That said, they've done almost
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: nothing merely resigning elast Dies and adding Jason Hayward and
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: Connor Joe on one year deals to platoon in left field.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: At the same time, they lost Tanner, Scott Jerks and
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Profar Kyle Higgey, Shioka, Donovan Solano, Martine Perez, and Hayesan
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: Kim to Rivals via free agency. They're projected to be
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: a couple of million over the lowest luxury tax threshold,
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: and that might well be the target, so I wouldn't.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Expect much in the way of editions the rest of
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: the winter.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: They also identify the Cardinals and Braves as losers, and
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: they said the Mariners also haven't done too much.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Rockies have no direction right now.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: The Pirates, they say, they're not that far away from
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: being competitive, of course, led by Paul Skeins as well,
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: so there's some there's something to be said about that.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: They did not mention the Rangers either as winners or
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: losers on that so is that a plus?
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: I honestly do not know what to think, because we
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: were so banged up this past season.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I got to get people healthy.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously, I'm totally fine letting go of scherz Er.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: I really think he is on the tapped out. Yeah,
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: but can de Gram stay healthy? That's a huge key, Like,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: can can we get a healthy season from the Gram?
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: And not only a healthy season Craig, Can we get
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: a good season from him? I think will be a
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: huge plus. And also offensive. You know, the injuries were
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: one thing, but the offense cratered as opposed to the
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: World Series championship year. So I think this team will
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: end up being a buyer at the trade deadline. But
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: we'll see. I don't think there are winners are losers
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: yet as of right now.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: How do you feel about Jack Peterson in a Ranger uniform?
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Like that move a lot.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: I think he's he's going to be obviously in a
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: hitters ballpark at Home Depot slash Globe Life Park Field
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: where they call it now much needed addition obviously.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I mean, you know him very well off what he
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: did for the Dodgers.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Yeah, he always looks on and he actually won the
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: World Series with the Dodgers in the in the COVID
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: year in the COVID you were there, yep, twenty twenty
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: he was there. Did he win the World Series with
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: the Braves the next year twenty twenty one? He might
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: have two World Series rings. He's been with the Giants,
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: he's been with the Cubs and now with the Rangers.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: And he's always a good left handed bat. But he's
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: gonna strike out a lot too. I mean, you know,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: that's just that's the way it is. But with the
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: way that right field porch is situated a globe life,
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: it might be pretty conducive to a wing.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: He always looks like he's about to make love to
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: his baseball bat as he steps to the plate. He
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: just gazed as lovingly at his bat as he steps
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: to the plate. Lindon and I get always a chuckle
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: out of that. Watch him, and it's part of his routine,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: just like you know, no Mar you know, doing all
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: the gloves and all the stuff he did.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Part of his routine is just he stares at his
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: bad and then he then he digs in.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: Is it barely does that? Or like from Major League
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: where what's his name was, you know, had a foodoo shrine.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: No, it's not quite like Pedro Serrano. Yeah, it's not
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: not quite like Pedro Serrano, you know. Uh, but uh,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: I always like Jock and I think I think he'll
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: be good for the Rangers. All right, coming up, we're
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: gonna hear more from Texas Longhorns baseball coach Jim schlagles
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Long Orange prepare to head north to Arlington to open
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: their season on Friday night at Globe Lie Field as
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: they'll take on the Louisville Cardinals.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: That's next. When we continue on thirteen.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Out of the Zone, let's hear more from Long Horns
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: head baseball coach Jim Schlasnagel getting ready for the season.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: Earlier in the program, we heard Schloss talking about when
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: he was asked about Texas continued to take part in
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: these early season whatever tournament's classics, things like that, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: he likes the fact that they'll play in Houston at the.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: What is it again? Renamed Ballpark for a minute, made
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: kateon what is it? Kate? What is it? Dacon davidon Field.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: There formerly known as ben at May Park. Next year,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: like on the third weekend, they're going to open at
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Globe Life. He said he'd rather not open with an
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: event like that, but he does like it and will
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: continue to alternate. He was also asked he mentioned that
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: they would be opening the season at the University of
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: San Diego next year. So he was asked, does he
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: know that foreign advance what the opponent's going to be like, say,
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: for next year's non conference schedule.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: No, they tell you a couple of years out. I
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: think Coach Pierce probably agreed. It's weird that we're playing
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: in an SEC school in a non conference game. I
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: think Coach Pierce probably agreed to it because we don't
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: play Ole Miss this year in the regular season, so
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: that's that makes total sense. But yeah, you know, in
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: the future, I mean, I think you're at the University
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: of Texas.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: You know we should if we.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: Only get four non conference weekends Texas, you know, the
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: home opener should be here, I mean the opener to me.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: To me, it should be at Dishfalk and then we'll
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: go on the road the second or third weekend, play
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: at home right before conference play begins, and then go
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: hit that gauntlet.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Yew uh.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: So here he is about to begin his first season
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: as head coach at Texas and of course he started
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: his head coaching or at UNLV and then he arked
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: on what he did at TCU and then from there
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: at Texas A and M. So is the setup for
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: him this first season at Texas similar to what he
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: encountered when he began his first season at TCU and
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: then Texas A and.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: M oh Man.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: I mean, two completely different programs at different stages, you know,
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: when I got to A and M. When I got
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: to TCU actually very very similar. When I got to TCU,
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: they had won thirty six games a year before and
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: had a lot of older players returning, and that first
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: year we set a school record of thirty nine wins.
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: Can you believe that thirty nine wins was the school
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: record that year in two thousand and four, and we
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: won a conference tournament. And then get to A and M,
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: and you know, they had a rough year the year
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: before the year before that was COVID and then had
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: an awesome group of older players very similar to this
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: core group of players here at Texas who totally bought in.
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: We had a lot of things go right that season,
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: and we had our best players had great seasons, and
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: we ended up you know, I think we were preseason
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: picked thirteenth out of fourteen the SEC and won the
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: SEC West, finished third and Omaha. So could I see
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: something like that happening with this team?
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: For sure? But that team also.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: Started out ten and eight and getting ready to play
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: the SEC play, and I felt like we were going
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: to lose twenty five games in SEC plays. A matter
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: of fact, no one came told me that. He told
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: me you're about to go. You just know you're about
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: to go five and twenty five in the SEC That's
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: what we felt like on that night after we lost
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: to Houston. But we went down there at the baton
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: Rouge one, two out of three guys got confident, felt
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: good about themselves. And I don't ever underestimate young people.
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: So I have a lot of belief in the core,
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: the core group of players that we inherited here, like
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: the gal Vans and the Shustlers and Balloo and Flores
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: and do Plantier, will Mercer like, I mean, there's more
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: than that, but just awesome humans. And but we're going
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: to be challenged, like really, like this program has never
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: been challenged before.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Schwatz talked about confidence and how important confidence is for
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: a young baseball team, so he was asked, how does
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: he go about doing this?
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: How does he get the team to be confident from
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: day one?
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: I mean, I think it just confidence comes from doing it,
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: and you have to go out and do it.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: You know, it's the chicken or the egg deal. Does
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: the confidence?
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: Are you confident before you play the game or are
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: you only confident when you have success? And so the
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: challenge I think is, you know, we call it opening
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: day mentality. How does every you know, I'm sure there's
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: some teams in the major leagues that start off knowing
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: they're going to lose one hundred games these days, But
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: in college baseball, on opening Day or like, no one's
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: going over four, no one's, no one's has a bad era,
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: you're super confident. And the challenge of baseball is can
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: you bring opening day mentality to every day? And why
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: why does yesterday's over four have to affect today's? And
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: that's easier said than done. But I think that's the
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: challengeallenge in all of baseball. But it's really the challenge
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: in the SEC because if you lose the first two games,
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: godly man, just try to grab one on a Sunday.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: And because if you can come through this thing at
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: or near or above or maybe in the ballpark of
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: a five hundred record, I mean, you're setting yourself up.
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: And then if you talk to every SEC coach at
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: the end of the season, they're like, we're prepared for everything.
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: There's no pitcher, there's no atmosphere, and that's why you
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: see so many teams do so well. I mean, the
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: SEC has a lot of the best players, but they
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: also they're so battle tested. And so I think my
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: challenge as the coach, even for myself because I'm super
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: competitive too, but at least having been through it for
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: three years, it's just, hey man, it's a new day.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Because if you've.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: Done really well for one day, you better watch out
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: because you'll get your doors blown in the next day.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: And so it's just really trying to keep them in
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: the moment and keep them present because it can snow
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: ball on you super fast.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: One of the interesting stories with this Longhorn baseball team
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: is Kimball Schuschler. Schusler started his collegiate curre at A
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: and M and then transferred to Texas UH and the
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: worst some hard feelings. He transferred in he had that
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: eye injury that basically took him completely out of two
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: seasons ago, and then came back and was so reliable
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: and dependable as the backup behind the plate and UH
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: and could come up with a clutch hit like in
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: the regional and college station. And he kind of pointed
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: to Schlasnagel in the Yaggie dugout when he ran to
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: the bases and all that sort of stuff. Well, Kimball
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: now is in the transitioning one from catcher to first base,
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: and Schlast was asked, would have much difference in his game?
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Does would his game elevate?
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: How?
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Would he see you know, significant difference in his game
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: transitioning from behind the plate to first base?
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: Not necessarily. I mean, I think Kimball. Kim's a really
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: good catcher. Obviously, when you move out of that spot,
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: then there's less to think about. It's kind of like
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: a lot of times you'll take an infielder and move
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: them the outfield and he starts swinging the bad a
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: little bit better because there's less to think about. When
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: you're playing the outfield, you got to pay attention. It
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: can get boring out there. But no, Kimball, Kimball just
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: loves It's important for Kimball to be around the baseball.
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: I mean, and I judge a first basement's defense by
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: the lack of throwing errors of the other infielders. Right,
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: if a first baseman can field a ground ball. I mean,
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: we want him to field a ground ball, but all
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: you got to really do is tackle it and flip
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: it to the pitcher. Most of the time, the key
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: is how do you play around the base and when
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: that ball gets thrown on a short hop, that's an error.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: Can you pick it and keep it from being an error?
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: And so he's worked really, really hard. He's had a
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: history of arm issues, so we need to protect him.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: Will he catch some this year?
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: I'm sure he will at times, But that's why the
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: development of Chamberlain the service is super important. But Kimball
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: was kim has been through a lot in his career.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Uh you know.
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: I was a part of recruiting him at TCU. We
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: tried to get him to come to TCU, and then
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: I get the A and M and and we didn't
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: have a spot for him at A and M.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: And that was a tough conversation.
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: And and then we played him last year in the
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: regional and he hit a homer and he rounded third
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: base and had a few awesome words to me, which
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: I love. I actually love that. I love Kimball. He's
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: an ultimate competitor. He never takes off a pitch, and
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: so we just have to keep He's an example. We
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: have to keep those guys healthy because those for us
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: to have success, our best players have to be on
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: the field. Uh yeah, no, I can't. My mother would
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: be pretty disappointed if. Yeah. So, And they're glad they're
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: back on the same side.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Now.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: The mental part of the game always important, always so
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: so important, and Schloss asked how this group has responded
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: mentally in his first off season with them.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been awesome.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: I think you know they've Mental skills are things that
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: can be practiced. And if you've been around this program
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: with coach Gurrito and you know that. And we've spent
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: more time, effort, and money in developing mental skills than
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: anybody else in the country since two thousand and six
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: at TCU A and M and now here. And I
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: believe that you can't be in control of your performance
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: unless you're in control of yourself. That's why this upcoming
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: tournament is such a I mean, you talk about stepping
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: into deep water, and you're going to play in a
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: big league park against great teams on TV, great crowds,
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: and so the challenge, I mean, somebody asked me Yeshually,
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: what do you want to see out of the weekend
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: besides three wins or wins? And it would be just
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: how our players handle adrenaline and adversity which you face
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: in every baseball game. And you're really going to see
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: it this weekend. And so you know, we've practiced those things,
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: we talk about them, we show them videos like we've
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: waited every day. It's the first thing we work on
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: in the fall, along before swings or pitches or anything else.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: And so it's that important to us. And they've bought in.
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: Now they have to go put it to practice in
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: the most you know, competitive environment, at least what they
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: we'll see now.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: You're going to hear a word used a few times
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: in this next piece of sound with Jim Schlasnagel, and
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: it applies to the run up to this season, everything
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: that happened from last June when Texas A and M
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: season ended in Omaham, and we know what happened next,
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: and we know with you know, Schloss meeting up with
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Crystal Kanti over and Snook Cemetery and the deal got
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: done and it comes over and there's.
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: All kinds of.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Uh manic things and conversations that happened. That wasn't the word.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: There's a different word, and you'll hear it when he
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: was asked when the things began to feel normal for
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: him after a and here's that word, chaotic arrival.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: They started to feel normal when I got to Once
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: I'm on the field with the players, then it's awesome.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: You know, everything outside of that is just it's slowed
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: down some, but it's just been super chaotic. And you know,
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: the one word, you know, I guess my one word
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: for twenty twenty four looking back would be, you know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: chaos or drama or whatever. And there was just so
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: much of it, you know, from the middle of June
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: on and that's you know, I mean, it's a decision
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: I made too, So it's not like, you know, someone
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: held a gun to my head. It was a choice
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: I made, but or we made as a group, Nolan, myself,
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: Max and Mike for a couple of days and and
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: and Chuck. So but once you get on the field
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: with the players, that's the best. That's the best part
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: of my day. The worst part of my days leaving here.
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: The best part of my day is coming to the ballpark.
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: And so once you're on the field. It has always
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: felt no on the field, it's away from the field
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: that it's it's not quite there yet.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, chaotic, you might say, but it'll probably settle in
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: once the season gets going. Schloss also has how he
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: wants his older guys, the returning veterans of this team,
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: to lead this team in the clubhouse and on the field.
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: Yeah, just helping him through those tough times. And they've
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: already done that. They've the first thing they've done is
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: they've established an unbelievable blue collar work ethic at an
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: incredibly white collar school, you know. And what I mean
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: by that is it's Texas. Like you know, everybody thinks
- 1:20:38Speaker 5: Texas has the most and the grandest of all things
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: in college athletics, which we have a lot. We do
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: have a lot of cool stuff here, but it's I
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: call it white collar appearance and a blue collar approach.
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: And we have this awesome facility on a day like
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: this where we can still go get work in and
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: like I said a couple days ago, like on a
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: day off, I actually I literally have to take the
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: balls out of the batting cage because these guys want
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: to be here and want to spend time here and
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: want to be in those cages all the time. And
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: so I think those older players have taught those young
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: players this is what it looks like to work at Texas.
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: This is our standard of how we work. And then
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: now it's going to be this is our standard on
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: how we act on a road trip. This is going
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: to be our standard of how we act in a dugout.
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: Some of that iowall influence, but it's also going to
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: be when a Rod or Chamberlain or whomever has their
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: first really rough day. You know, hearing it from your
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: coach is one thing, but hearing it from your peer
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: it has a lot more weight.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: And so those guys will do a great job with that.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: And so to follow up on that, why was it
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: important to establish that team culture?
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: I think you know when you go through I mean
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: went to original last year, so it wasn't a horrible season,
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: you know, I mean, I take the four seat in
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: Anchorage right now, but but you know, I just think, seriously,
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: I take it. Wouldn't you take can't get domb Hall
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: unless you're an O regional. So as of now, I'd
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: take four season Anchorage and take it from there. But Uh,
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: but no, I mean, you know, I think you know.
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: We all learn as we get older, and and you
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: got it. The one thing I've learned is you've got
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: to have empathy for the players. And I fail at
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: that too. I'm super competitive. And the game sure is
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: easy from the dugout. It's sure is easy from section
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: one oh seven or two o eight or whatever the
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: old saying. The further you are away from the field,
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: the more you know. And and with the player, man,
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: it's it's hard, like you know the man. They're the
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: ones in the arena, and I want them to feel supported.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: I have to hold it. I have to hold them
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: accountable to help to their attitude and their effort, but
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: in terms of support and just knowing like you're gonna
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: get punched in the mouth. And that's why we create
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: these mental skills, to give them something, a process and
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: something tangible to go to so they can get better.
- 1:22:55Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: And one final thing from Jim Schlashnagel again rolling back
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: to this whole thing about the chaos and in moving
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: to Texas and it's shock waves across college baseball and
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: the college baseball landscape.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Schloss is that.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: A good thing is is it good because of the
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: attention the game and the institutions garnered as a result.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: It is it a good thing for college baseball that
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: his moved to Texas created waves?
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: You know, I think, yes, I wish it wasn't as
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: I don't know what word would you use, polarizing, poisonous
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: in some ways, toxic, you know, I get it.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: It was fun for you guys, I'm sure.
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: But I didn't make the decision because I was looking
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: to stick it to anybody. I loved it there, I
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: loved it. I loved the twelfth Man. They were so
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: good to me. A portion of fan is short for fanatic,
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: that's short, you know, And it's okay. But you know,
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: I wasn't trying to like make some statement or do
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: anything like that. Just made a career decision that was
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: based on relationships and based on alignment. And it's you know,
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: I don't believe in better or worse. I just believe
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: in different. Going to TCU, going from TCU to A and.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: M wasn't better or worse.
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: If anything, TCU was in a way better position than Texas.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: A and M at the time.
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: It's just different, and so so yeah, it's it'll probably
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: always be a part of it, but there was no
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: I don't I don't have any animosity whatsoever towards Texas
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: A and M, especially General Welsh's. He's one of my
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: favorite people I've ever been around.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: All Right there, it is from Jim slasnakem and the
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: season opener just a little over forty eight hours. Just
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: a tiny bit over fifty hours from that. It's fifty
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: and a half hours from now for the scheduled season
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: opener for Longhorn Baseball on Friday night in Arlington against Louisville.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: We're gonna remove from Vick Schaeffer coming up when we
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: continue on AM thirteen under the Zone. Let's hear some
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: more from Texas women's head coach Vick Schaeffer. He was
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: asked about Georgia Amore, who averages nineteen points per game,
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: the long Orange Face.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Another outstanding guard.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: They've seen great guards all season long, and they're going
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: to see another one.
- 1:25:17Speaker 8: Georgia Moores obviously one of the best guards in the country.
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: She's playing at such a high level.
- 1:25:22Speaker 8: She's a veteran, she's been with coach Brooks all her career,
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: and you know, you got to really love and appreciate
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: a kid like her that's loyal to him, and she knows,
- 1:25:33Speaker 8: he knows how they both know each other, she knows
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: how he wants her to play, what their style of
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: play is, you know, and so you know, she's really
- 1:25:44Speaker 8: good and player that can do it at all three levels.
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: Just a really special player. So that they got size,
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: I mean, they got length. You know, they're a complete team,
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: got almost five players in double figures.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: And so it's there's a reason why.
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: They're who they are, where they are, why they're ranked
- 1:26:03Speaker 8: where they're ranked. And so we're gonna have to go
- 1:26:07Speaker 8: on the road and and you know, obviously execute have
- 1:26:11Speaker 8: great focus concentration, and again we'll be now in an
- 1:26:16Speaker 8: environment that probably hadn't hollered for us.
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: So how do we handle that?
- 1:26:20Speaker 8: You know, we handled it fairly good at times throughout
- 1:26:23Speaker 8: the course of the season, but in some venues it's
- 1:26:27Speaker 8: way worse than others. And this is gonna be one worst,
- 1:26:29Speaker 8: probably gonna be way worse, and there's probably not gonna
- 1:26:31Speaker 8: be a lot of long ones in the building.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: A couple of questions about focus and being grounded coming
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: off that big win over South Carolina at first, he
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: was asked, how did this he keep his team on
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: target for Kentucky tomorrow night and LSU on Saturday coming
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: off to Winever, South Carolina.
- 1:26:52Speaker 8: Just just what I've said. I you know, winning is hard.
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: Winning that game is hard. Being in the position that
- 1:27:00Speaker 8: we're in right now is hard. Look, I want them
- 1:27:02Speaker 8: to enjoy it. It's one game, and I said that
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: going into the game Sunday, y'all, this is one game,
- 1:27:08Speaker 8: win or lose. It's one game. It's not going to
- 1:27:11Speaker 8: make or break our season. We have so much after
- 1:27:14Speaker 8: that and so much left to play for. And so
- 1:27:18Speaker 8: that's my message to our kids. You know, the only
- 1:27:21Speaker 8: thing that success affords you is the opportunity.
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: To work hard again, to go get more. That's it.
- 1:27:28Speaker 8: And so for us, that's where we're at. And so
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: again I want them to enjoy it. But at the
- 1:27:34Speaker 8: same time, I'm always a guy that tries to keep
- 1:27:38Speaker 8: people grounded, keeps you focus focused, and.
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: You know, it's just who I am.
- 1:27:47Speaker 8: It's hard for me to sometimes enjoy it as much
- 1:27:50Speaker 8: as I should because I'm always worried about the next one,
- 1:27:53Speaker 8: you know, because I've been down this road so much
- 1:27:57Speaker 8: and so often in my career. So it's really nothing
- 1:28:00Speaker 8: new for me, and I know what it takes, not
- 1:28:03Speaker 8: in night out, day and day out.
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: I know what the preparation is like.
- 1:28:06Speaker 8: I know that if you look past anybody, that's when
- 1:28:10Speaker 8: you can get popped. So it's really easy for me.
- 1:28:14Speaker 8: What's hard is and you see it all the time.
- 1:28:17Speaker 8: I'm watching other games, and to me, I see it
- 1:28:20Speaker 8: with other teams. You just take things for granted, you
- 1:28:24Speaker 8: take teams for granted, you take your opponent for granted,
- 1:28:27Speaker 8: you don't respect them, and the next thing you know,
- 1:28:29Speaker 8: you're in a dogfight, you know. And so I just
- 1:28:33Speaker 8: think for me, it's really easy, and that's my job
- 1:28:35Speaker 8: is to convey it to our players. Okay, that one's over.
- 1:28:38Speaker 8: I gave you the two days, and that's time for
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: the next one. If we don't get ready for this
- 1:28:44Speaker 8: next one, everything we've worked for up until February tenth,
