Transcript
- 0:02Phil: Good morning, everybody. God, does it feel like morning. More morning than normal.
- 0:08Tad Eggleston: Welcome back to 22 Panels, episode 207.
- 0:14Tad Eggleston: For October 26, 2025, second to last, Episode of Season 5.
- 0:22Tad Eggleston: 4.
- 0:24Phil: Second to last?
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, 52 weeks a year.
- 0:28Phil: There we go. Okay, I was just making sure that's the.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: 08 will be the… The end of the fourth season.
- 0:34Phil: All right, so, so November is kind of the, the rollover, the rollover?
- 0:40Tad Eggleston: Right? Right.
- 0:42Phil: Interesting.
- 0:43Phil: Yeah, so that's, that's a…
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: I'd have to go look up when exactly our first episode was.
- 0:49Phil: Okay.
- 0:50Tad Eggleston: Not that that's too hard, I'll have it for you in a second.
- 0:54Phil: It's interesting timing, because that's, right around the time of my wedding anniversary, so that's… that's a… it's a good, good,
- 1:01Phil: memory trick, when you can double up on your…
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: Or.
- 1:05Phil: anniversary importance.
- 1:09Tad Eggleston: Our first episode was…
- 1:20Tad Eggleston: November 13th, 2021.
- 1:24Phil: So it, that is, yeah, that's, that's, well…
- 1:28Phil: the wedding was on… no, it was on 2021, so yeah, it says that your first episode was on the day of my wedding.
- 1:35Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 1:36Phil: Yeah.
- 1:39Phil: Holy cow.
- 1:41Tad Eggleston: I'm trying to… now I have to figure out when you were on the, on the podcast.
- 1:46Phil: I'm pretty sure I reached out to you in January, because that was around the time that,
- 1:53Phil: there was… there was definitely some… some other interesting stuff going on in my life that… that's, you know, I'm kind of, like, able to tie in when I started talking… talking to you, around those sorts of times. There we go!
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: was February 13th.
- 2:05Phil: There we go, alright.
- 2:07Phil: Isn't that fun?
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: It was episode 14 was your first appearance.
- 2:13Phil: This is like…
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: 22 panels. And we already had 10… 10 interviews, so, like, we were… we were well on our way to the more interviews than weekly episodes that… that we very much are now.
- 2:26Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 2:30Tad Eggleston: And could become more in the near future, but we're gonna not talk about that yet.
- 2:35Phil: More interviews. That's right.
- 2:38Phil: Tad is, well on his way to talking to everyone in comics at least once.
- 2:43Tad Eggleston: I mean?
- 2:44Tad Eggleston: You gotta have goals, right?
- 2:46Phil: Hell yeah.
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: So, big, big news this week.
- 2:52Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait, I forgot to say across the interwebs, so let's roll back, let's roll back.
- 2:57Phil: Dilly-doo, dilly-do, tilly-doo!
- 2:59Tad Eggleston: Yep, yep. Across the interwebs from me.
- 3:02Tad Eggleston: is Phil.
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: My cat did not like that noise.
- 3:07Tad Eggleston: He's not a spider cat.
- 3:10Phil: He is not. He is perturbed.
- 3:12Tad Eggleston: He's not a ninja cat either, bro.
- 3:16Phil: No. He…
- 3:17Tad Eggleston: We figured out, we figured out, like, like, between Kelly, me, and my friend Jeff, we did figure out.
- 3:24Phil: Eddie's passed as a ninja?
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: No, who robbed the Louvre?
- 3:29Phil: Oh, yeah? Who was that?
- 3:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, we saw a list…
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: That included, you know, George Clooney and his friends.
- 3:36Phil: Sure.
- 3:38Tad Eggleston: cats and ninjas. And we're like, see, they're… they're off here, because, I mean, as we know from reading Usagi Yojimbo.
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: All cats. Or all ninjas are cats.
- 3:51Phil: Oh. Okay.
- 3:53Tad Eggleston: But… but… also… like…
- 3:59Tad Eggleston: Cats domesticated themselves, so, I mean, really, cats tamed humans, so everybody who has a cat knows that, like, we're the pets.
- 4:10Phil: Oh yeah. They look at us like just big dumb cats that don't know how to hunt very well, and that's why they have to bring us things to show…
- 4:18Tad Eggleston: They think of us as cats, they think of us as…
- 4:27Phil: Food and warm.
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 4:29Phil: That's how I get looked at.
- 4:30Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 4:33Tad Eggleston: when you look at it that way, you realize that, like, the heists that Clooney and gang do…
- 4:41Tad Eggleston: are the easy ones that their cat masters have planned for them. And when it's a serious heist is when the cats go in themselves. So, so it's the ninja Cat Ocean Masters that they need to be looking for.
- 4:58Tad Eggleston: They should go to each Clooney and his friend's house and look for the cat. They won't find it.
- 5:03Phil: No, of course not.
- 5:05Phil: Any good cat knows to hide from… They might find a non-ninja cat.
- 5:09Tad Eggleston: that the Ninja Cat has set up for the fall.
- 5:14Phil: A conveniently non-smoking gun.
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 5:18Tad Eggleston: Like, Eddie's not a ninja cat.
- 5:23Phil: No?
- 5:24Phil: I don't know! He… I can see Eddie handling some throwing stars.
- 5:28Tad Eggleston: Like, yeah, but… but, like… Eddie is…
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: not particularly good at being stealthy. Sometimes when trying to get out of the house.
- 5:43Tad Eggleston: But I think he uses speed and distraction more than stealth things.
- 5:47Phil: Okay, okay. He… that might make him the, Naruto of Cat Ninjas.
- 5:52Tad Eggleston: maybe… but, like, even among our cats, Kelly and I agreed that Cepi is the one that could be the leader in kind of the Kaiser Soze way?
- 6:06Phil: Oh, interesting.
- 6:06Tad Eggleston: Where it's like, it's like, you don't think it's him, because he just seems timid, and…
- 6:12Phil: Oh, gosh.
- 6:13Phil: This is reminding…
- 6:14Tad Eggleston: Buu…
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: Whereas Eddie just… he's too straightforward.
- 6:24Phil: Mmm, no, no, no guile. No…
- 6:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:28Phil: No sauce. Apparently, and I found this out through a post of Alex DeCampi's, there is, like, a wiki of Chinese street cats and the legends that people spin about them.
- 6:42Tad Eggleston: That is kinda cool.
- 6:43Phil: It's pretty… it was pretty damn cool. I need to find it again.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: I also hope that it means that that's what's coming out in her next book.
- 6:50Phil: I mean, it might have been background research for Scrapper, you never know.
- 6:53Tad Eggleston: It could, it could have been, but… but, like…
- 6:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, it depends, like, because I think she often puts the research she's doing out, so if she put it out before Scrapper came out, then yeah, it could have been the research for Scrapper. But if she's put it out since then.
- 7:15Phil: I don't quite remember, this was a while ago.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: one, yeah.
- 7:18Phil: I mean, it's fruitful research, that is for sure.
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: That's true. So anyway, back to…
- 7:26Tad Eggleston: the big, big news, if you are anywhere near La Verne, Minnesota, and I know that that, that, like, isn't a lot of people, so any of you listening in Sioux Falls, any of you listening in Minneapolis, you know, Sioux Falls is, like, half an hour, Minneapolis, it's two, two and a half hours, but it's still worth it.
- 7:45Phil: Yeah, I think… I think this one goes out to anyone who's even curious of what might be in store.
- 7:52Tad Eggleston: And definitely go follow on Facebook.
- 7:55Phil: Heck yeah.
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: The Nexus Vault.
- 8:01Tad Eggleston: is… Tyler… our beloved Tyler's new store.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: They have a Facebook page.
- 8:10Phil: They've already got photos.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: They've got some Photoshop. Wow.
- 8:15Tad Eggleston: Looks like they've got some blind bags for… For.
- 8:19Phil: First purchase.
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: Oh, they have a candy machine, some toys…
- 8:26Tad Eggleston: I don't know if they…
- 8:28Tad Eggleston: I don't know if they've actually gotten to…
- 8:32Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's a great book, Park Bench.
- 8:34Phil: Oh, that's funny, I have a… I have a book by that author… Behind me, alone.
- 8:39Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 8:40Tad Eggleston: I don't know if they have actually reached getting their first… Lunar and PRH orders in.
- 8:51Phil: Hmm.
- 8:52Tad Eggleston: But… but they… they are… they are doing their soft open. I'm not even gonna call it the grand open.
- 8:59Tad Eggleston: Though I think he did. He called it the grand opening, so I guess I should call it the grand opening.
- 9:04Phil: Oh yeah, let's not undersell this. This is, it's a big moment.
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but, like, I come from a world where you do, like, soft openings to get your feet under you, and then do the big party when you got it down.
- 9:19Phil: Oh yeah, yeah, I understand that, too.
- 9:22Tad Eggleston: So, so… so, yeah.
- 9:25Tad Eggleston: Tyler opens his shop today.
- 9:32Tad Eggleston: 109 East Main Street, La Verne, Minnesota.
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: So our best of luck to Tyler.
- 9:42Tad Eggleston: And, yeah.
- 9:44Tad Eggleston: like I said, if you're anywhere near La Verne, Minnesota, or if you're driving west on I-90, hop off at La Verne, like…
- 9:55Tad Eggleston: if you're bored, and in California, and feel like looking for some Star Wars toys, hop a flight into, like…
- 10:04Phil: He did have some original…
- 10:06Tad Eggleston: Lambos, or Minneapolis.
- 10:09Phil: You know, do they have an online shop set up yet?
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: I believe so, but I'm not seeing it.
- 10:19Tad Eggleston: I do… I do not see it on… on their…
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait a minute, the business card says nexusfault.com, so let'.
- 10:30Phil: Okay.
- 10:31Tad Eggleston: Let's also check that out as well.
- 10:33Phil: www.nexusvault.com.
- 10:36Tad Eggleston: we, we, we were, we were just looking at their Facebook page, But they're… they're… they're…
- 10:45Tad Eggleston: business card that we're looking at on the Facebook page has an email address that is currently private.
- 10:53Phil: Dun dun dun.
- 10:54Tad Eggleston: Has not gone long, but it is a Squarespace… page. Okay.
- 11:00Phil: It's a good choice, I think. So, yeah, they will likely have…
- 11:05Tad Eggleston: Sales stuff.
- 11:08Tad Eggleston: Or, ability for online sales sooner rather than later.
- 11:13Tad Eggleston: Because Tyler's aware that he's out in the middle of nowhere.
- 11:17Tad Eggleston: So anyway, you have a, a.
- 11:21Phil: We do some exciting…
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: I'll count this as comic book move.
- 11:24Phil: It's comic adjacent.
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: news. Like…
- 11:27Phil: But the… there was a… there was a fun announcement from the past couple of days. We have… we have news that Charles Burns' classic, Black Hole is to be adapted by Jane,
- 11:39Phil: Shona Brunn, the writer-director of I Saw the TV Glow, which I've heard great things about, and that seems like just a great pairing. And also fitting, fitting for our mind-blowing episode is… is… I had forgotten to include Black Hole as a potential mind-blower until… until,
- 11:57Phil: remembering… remembering this little news bit to… to include. But yeah, that sounds like…
- 12:01Phil: You know, I don't make it a point to watch every comic adaptation, because that's just… that's too much, and I don't have that bandwidth, but this is one that I will absolutely seek out, because Black Hole's a fucking classic.
- 12:13Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'll seek out issue 1, or Episode 1.
- 12:16Phil: Heck yeah, give it a shot. I mean, they'll… I'm hoping they'll drop them all at once.
- 12:19Phil: sounded like it was Netflix.
- 12:20Tad Eggleston: Well, but it doesn't actually matter if they drop them all at once, like, this is one of those that, like, is so uniquely comic to me that if they're not knocking it out of the park really fast, they'll stop caring.
- 12:34Phil: That is…
- 12:35Phil: Yeah, I mean, I have… I have faith in this creative team, because, again, I still need a CI's valid TP Glue. The reason I haven't yet is because I heard it was more,
- 12:44Phil: It was billed as a horror movie, but it wasn't actually scary, and you know…
- 12:48Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, for me, it's not even… I mean, there… I'm certain that there are things out there that are comics adaptations that are great TV shows in their own right. Oh, absolutely.
- 13:00Tad Eggleston: I, I, I, I…
- 13:04Tad Eggleston: I understand that adaptations are a separate beast, and you can be great even if you have…
- 13:11Tad Eggleston: deviated. But,
- 13:18Tad Eggleston: My biggest reason for wanting to watch this is because it's a comics adaptation.
- 13:24Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 13:24Tad Eggleston: grab me.
- 13:26Tad Eggleston: And grab me in… in the way that fits…
- 13:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, my TV, my TV and my comics, I have different… but, like, if it doesn't grab me, I'm gonna stop being interested really fast and go read a comic book. Oh, totally.
- 13:42Phil: Yeah, it's, it's, for me…
- 13:44Tad Eggleston: Probably have an even higher bar for comic adaptations.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: than… than normal TV in terms of…
- 13:53Phil: The better the book is, the harsher the.
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: Well, no, it's not even a critique, it's just, like…
- 14:00Phil: or even chance willing to give, but yeah, I know what you mean, where…
- 14:04Tad Eggleston: And again, it's, like…
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: There are a million shows that I soft-abandoned, that I would never bash, I just never watch the next episode.
- 14:15Phil: Yeah, yeah, that's for sure.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean? Oh, 100%. That's the biggest reason why… why…
- 14:22Phil: And half the time, it's not even… I, like, never watch the next episode.
- 14:26Tad Eggleston: And I don't mean to.
- 14:28Phil: It's… you just forget.
- 14:30Tad Eggleston: I just haven't.
- 14:31Phil: Yeah, that's happening.
- 14:33Tad Eggleston: It's more like, I haven't watched the next episode yet.
- 14:37Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 14:38Phil: You don't know when you'll get around to it.
- 14:40Tad Eggleston: like…
- 14:41Phil: I mean…
- 14:43Tad Eggleston: and, like, my Star Wars…
- 14:47Tad Eggleston: buddies, like, beat me over the head for this. I haven't watched episode, I think, 3 of Andor yet.
- 14:56Phil: Like I said, you haven't seen Revenge of the Sith?
- 14:58Tad Eggleston: Or anything beyond that.
- 15:01Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 15:02Tad Eggleston: So, like, I watched the first…
- 15:03Phil: and or.
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: I watched the first two episodes, I liked it, I thought it was good.
- 15:07Tad Eggleston: It was a little too intense for Kelly, and I didn't love it so much that I was seeking it out during my spare time, and it's been, what, 3 years now?
- 15:17Phil: something.
- 15:18Tad Eggleston: Three years and another season?
- 15:19Phil: Yeah, I was gonna say, they did a season 2, so it's definitely been a while.
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: That's kind of how my TV watching goes.
- 15:29Tad Eggleston: There we go.
- 15:30Phil: I mean, and that's why I aspire to… it's inspirational, the amount…
- 15:36Tad Eggleston: And a lot of my TV watching is rewatching things, because then it's easier to be in the background, and it's just comfort.
- 15:43Phil: Oh, yeah. I mean, it's… yeah, that's another thing, is there are times where I… if I have the TV on, I need… I need a second screen. I am at that level of society.
- 15:52Tad Eggleston: I've been on a justified tear lately.
- 15:56Phil: I hear that one's really good.
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: And, and spending my time in the car reading, or listening to Elmore Leonard.
- 16:05Phil: Really give it snow.
- 16:06Tad Eggleston: novels, so, like, I've been doing both the TV version of the character and the… D.
- 16:15Tad Eggleston: She'll receive the character.
- 16:17Tad Eggleston: And I actually went and checked down… it's only available on YouTube right now.
- 16:23Tad Eggleston: Long before Justified, Showtime had adapted Pronto, Mmm.
- 16:29Tad Eggleston: Her first book that, raylan Givens appeared in.
- 16:34Phil: Okay.
- 16:35Tad Eggleston: We're… He was one of, like, 3 main characters?
- 16:44Tad Eggleston: And definitely in terms of the casting, and in terms of the writing, they focused more on the guy that he was looking for.
- 16:55Tad Eggleston: Hmm. Because they cast Peter Falk.
- 16:58Phil: Oh, yeah, that's… that's a big one, yeah.
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 17:01Phil: That's always amusing.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 17:04Tad Eggleston: So, you know.
- 17:06Tad Eggleston: Anyway, what kind of week has it been?
- 17:10Tad Eggleston: Well…
- 17:11Phil: Has… still only been a week.
- 17:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, I mean, apparently, 7-ish million people are… Not that many people, and they all had signs that were made at Kinko's, wrote the same sign! I don't think it's that big of a deal.
- 17:26Phil: I wish Yogi Bear was our president, because that's who you sound like right now.
- 17:29Tad Eggleston: Okay, sorry.
- 17:30Phil: No, no, I, I appreciate…
- 17:33Tad Eggleston: Well, I…
- 17:33Phil: Yogi Bear, more than…
- 17:35Tad Eggleston: I, I, yeah, but I don't want to associate Yogi Bear with…
- 17:39Phil: That's fair, that's fair. We don't want… we don't want to cross those…
- 17:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yes, 7 million of us took to the streets last weekend.
- 17:48Tad Eggleston: I even managed to squeeze out, not during a specific period, because,
- 17:55Tad Eggleston: well, my wife's still in the hospital, and was then, but… but, I happen to live in Chicago, so, like, there were the No Kings protests, but there's also the,
- 18:07Tad Eggleston: everyday protest at the Broadview Detention Center, so…
- 18:12Tad Eggleston: I did spend some time in my afternoon last Saturday at the Broadview Detention Center.
- 18:18Tad Eggleston: And let me give a huge thumbs up to, the people out there. They got a nice tent set up with water, and snacks, and signs, and sign-making supplies, and a lost and found table.
- 18:32Tad Eggleston: Which, I just love it.
- 18:34Tad Eggleston: that somebody had the presence of mind to put together a lost and found table. Oh, yeah. You gotta collect all those stray shoes. Actually, apparently, sometimes it's car keys.
- 18:44Phil: Yeah, that's…
- 18:45Tad Eggleston: Wallets.
- 18:46Phil: without that, yeah, it's pretty big. It's pretty big. It's just, you know…
- 18:51Tad Eggleston: We're looking out for me.
- 18:51Phil: each other, absolutely. I love to hear stories.
- 18:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so, yeah.
- 18:59Tad Eggleston: And, like, that may or may not have anything to do with why, the president has demolished
- 19:11Tad Eggleston: the east wing of the White House.
- 19:15Phil: It's pretty startling. I saw a side-by-side.
- 19:17Tad Eggleston: He said that it wasn't gonna…
- 19:21Tad Eggleston: be touched when he was building his ballroom, but…
- 19:24Phil: It's pretty clear right now that…
- 19:27Phil: He doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.
- 19:30Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. And, like, the bunker's on the east wing, so, like, maybe they're actually just using it as cover to do some work there. Though even then, you know, it could be he had to go to the bunker
- 19:47Tad Eggleston: a couple of times during his first presidency, and he didn't like it, so maybe it's, like, not a posh enough bunker for him? I don't know. Heaven forbid.
- 19:57Tad Eggleston: No massage tables.
- 20:00Phil: Man. Oh.
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:04Tad Eggleston: Though I did… did you… did you catch the, the ad?
- 20:13Tad Eggleston: that Ontario?
- 20:15Tad Eggleston: put up.
- 20:16Phil: No, that sounds fun, though. I tend to like Ontario.
- 20:19Tad Eggleston: he completely threw a shit fit after it appeared the first time. Even more of a shit fit? World Series last night, so…
- 20:28Phil: Oh, wow.
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:30Tad Eggleston: Ontario… You…
- 20:33Phil: end of.
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, well, it was, it was paid for by the government of Ontario, Canada.
- 20:40Tad Eggleston: using… footage and audio from Ronald Reagan.
- 20:51Tad Eggleston: Ran an ad… on how bad tariffs were for the American people.
- 21:00Phil: That's incredible. Oh, I love that.
- 21:05Tad Eggleston: Like I said, I don't know where it first aired, because he threw his shit bit before last night, but I was watching the World Series Game 1 last night, and it ran during the World Series, which, you know, Toronto's in Ontario, so, like…
- 21:19Tad Eggleston: But, boy.
- 21:21Phil: Wow.
- 21:23Phil: Nice. Love, love seeing them poke the bear like that.
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: You know, meanwhile, we continue our extraditional… er, extrajudicial murders in the… the…
- 21:34Phil: Yeah, huh?
- 21:34Tad Eggleston: And now, in the Pacific.
- 21:36Phil: Whoa.
- 21:37Tad Eggleston: We blew up a boat in the Pacific as well. No evidence has been shown of any of these boats carrying drugs. It should be pointed out that even if there was evidence that they carried drugs, the way that's supposed to work is you're supposed to intercept the boat.
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: Board it, arrest the people, take the drugs, and then have a trial?
- 22:02Tad Eggleston: Also, I'm not aware of the death penalty, for, like…
- 22:13Tad Eggleston: Drug smuggling in this country.
- 22:15Phil: Yeah, that's… I… yeah, it's one of those where I…
- 22:20Phil: I don't even know how to rationally engage with this, because it's just such a ridiculous series of actions that I get so…
- 22:30Phil: So angry and so, like.
- 22:32Phil: That's… that's the primary thought that comes across. It's just blatant anger of, why… why the fuck are…
- 22:38Phil: We, as a country, doing this, and why It's allowed to continue happening.
- 22:43Tad Eggleston: Let's see… pretty certain it was in Heather Cox Richardson's email. Anybody not reading letters from an American really, really should.
- 22:51Tad Eggleston: Let's see, the quote from… No, maybe not.
- 23:01Tad Eggleston: Cause, yeah, it talks about the…
- 23:07Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, here we are.
- 23:11Tad Eggleston: when a reporter asked him yesterday why he didn't ask Congress for a declaration of war against those South American drug cartels.
- 23:19Tad Eggleston: he claims we're at war with the United States. Trump answered, well, I don't think we're gonna necessarily ask for a declaration of war. I think we're just gonna kill people that are bringing drugs into our country, okay? We're gonna kill them, you know? They're gonna be like…
- 23:33Tad Eggleston: Dead, okay?
- 23:37Phil: Yeah, that's a… that's a chilling sentiment, but I… yeah, I'm… I'd be terrified of any world leader saying shit like this, much less…
- 23:47Phil: the leader of our own country.
- 23:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like, is this, is this, the President of the United States, or Tony Soprano?
- 23:55Phil: Yeah, well, that…
- 23:57Phil: That's… that's how I… it's hard for you to imagine that's not how he wants to be seen.
- 24:03Tad Eggleston: Did you see… Jon Stewart on The Daily Show?
- 24:08Phil: I did not, but he's Good.
- 24:11Tad Eggleston: He, he, he, he did a wonderful…
- 24:16Tad Eggleston: A wonderful, wonderful, like, let's, you know, we're gonna play the clip.
- 24:23Tad Eggleston: Because it's off of YouTube. Let me reshare in a way that will give us sound.
- 24:33Tad Eggleston: Because…
- 24:34Phil: Just a little extra context for.
- 24:36Tad Eggleston: This is pretty great.
- 24:37Phil: This morning.
- 24:43Tad Eggleston: This is Jon Stewart on the Daily Show.
- 24:46Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: He's a miracle worker. Trump just performed an actual miracle before our eyes. He was saved to do things like he did today. He's got just a special anointing. Prophecy, destiny, and divine purpose. President Trump is God's chosen instrument for this moment in time.
- 25:05Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Since this is audio only, that's all, right?
- 25:08Tad Eggleston: Wings.
- 25:08Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Christianity.
- 25:09Phil: Yes.
- 25:09Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: We're saving God.
- 25:10Tad Eggleston: TV and podcasts.
- 25:11Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: To Republicans, King is a demotion.
- 25:16Phil: He's not a kid?
- 25:17Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: He's a deity!
- 25:18Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Sent by God to bring peace to all of mankind. A Jesus-like figure. I mean, I get it.
- 25:24Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: There is a lot of crossover.
- 25:26Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: That's why tonight I thought we'd end our program.
- 25:29Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: With some fun, and play the hottest new game show on basic cable.
- 25:33Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Jesus… or Trump.
- 25:38Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Alright, here we go!
- 25:44Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: I'll read a quote.
- 25:46Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: And you try and figure out…
- 25:50Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: If it was said by Donald J. Trump or Jesus H. Christ.
- 25:53Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Oh boy.
- 25:58Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Get out your scorecards!
- 26:01Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: First quote!
- 26:03Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Love your enemies, and pray for those Who persecute you.
- 26:07Phil: I'm starting off… Oh, this is a close one.
- 26:10Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Give everybody a second to lock in their answers.
- 26:14Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Jesus Christ, that's you.
- 26:20Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Got about 60% in the audience, got it.
- 26:23Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Number two, be on your guard against all kinds of greed.
- 26:27Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions. That's another tricky one. I want you to take…
- 26:35Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Jesus again. That was a two completely.
- 26:42Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Let me try another one.
- 26:44Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: I did try and her.
- 26:56Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Please wait till after I finish the quote before you're off in there.
- 27:00Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Please.
- 27:01Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: I did try and her, she was married.
- 27:07Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: And I moved on her very heavily.
- 27:10Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, I'll show you where they have some nice furniture.
- 27:18Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Ma'am?
- 27:23Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Please respect the other contestants.
- 27:29Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: I moved on her like a bitch.
- 27:33Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: But I couldn't… Don't boo, it could be Jesus.
- 27:38Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: And you are risking… Eternal life.
- 27:43Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: But I couldn't get there, and she was married. Then all of a sudden, I see her, she's now got the big, phony tits and everything, she's totally changed her look.
- 28:00Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: Lock it, lock in.
- 28:05Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: That one was shot. That was tough. Bing, bong! Yeah, you got that, you got…
- 28:08Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: You guys are very good at this game.
- 28:12Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: So if you ask, is Trump a king? Nay! Nay!
- 28:17Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: He's the King of Kings!
- 28:19Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: And that, my friends, is a reason to rejoice.
- 28:25Phil: Yeah, that's a… for anyone… for anyone who… whose sensors might not be calibrated right, that was all sarcasm.
- 28:32Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 28:33Phil: told…
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: Yes, so you're here
- 28:35Tad Eggleston: Yes, I… well, and I did cut it off before he got into the playing of the… I mean, and this is what I love, and it was so great, like…
- 28:47Tad Eggleston: I mean, I loved all of the ways that they had to clutch pearls. I'm gonna use the J.D. Vance line to clutch pearls, trying to,
- 29:01Tad Eggleston: downplay… the No Kings rallies, because, you know, it was… it was… it was, like, Fox News… Fox News!
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: Was… you notice how it's all old people? And they're, like, all white?
- 29:21Phil: Are you about the protesters?
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:24Phil: Yeah.
- 29:24Tad Eggleston: Right, Fox News!
- 29:27Phil: Wow.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: at the just…
- 29:32Tad Eggleston: Many of the people who had been talking about how they were gonna be dangerous Hamas protests, then tried to pivot to, they're not serious, it's silly, it's just a party.
- 29:46Phil: That's… one of my favorite lines was seeing one guy go from, these people are clowns, to they're organized, they're buying their own animal costumes.
- 29:56Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 29:57Phil: Right!
- 29:58Phil: Like, it's… It's… It's more surreal than an absurdist comedy.
- 30:05Tad Eggleston: But, I mean, just to add context to the whole pearl clutching, apparently, anybody who thinks the young, young, young 30 to 40-year.
- 30:17Phil: Republican.
- 30:18Tad Eggleston: who… who are in… Positions of power in government,
- 30:26Tad Eggleston: weren't just boys being boys when they were talking about… Nazi streak, and…
- 30:35Phil: Yeah, how much they love Hillary.
- 30:36Tad Eggleston: Not in their text thread, oh, you're just, you're just clutching your pearls.
- 30:42Phil: Let us note that here at 22 Panels, the only Hitler humor we endorse is dead Hitler humor.
- 30:49Tad Eggleston: We do prefer dead Hitler humor.
- 30:52Tad Eggleston: We do, we do prefer Deadhit.
- 30:54Phil: It's a… it's a distinct choice that we made a long time ago.
- 30:57Tad Eggleston: Yay!
- 30:58Phil: Oh, man.
- 30:59Phil: It's also rather humorous that a quote-unquote young Republican is in their 30s or 40s.
- 31:05Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean… All young Republicans are between 18 and 40.
- 31:10Phil: There you go, yeah.
- 31:11Tad Eggleston: That's like…
- 31:11Phil: Whoa.
- 31:12Tad Eggleston: That's like the…
- 31:16Tad Eggleston: But this was young Republican leadership.
- 31:19Phil: Right, it's… oh my gosh. Basically.
- 31:21Tad Eggleston: One of the people on the chat was a state senator. One of the people, or a couple of people on the chat were, like.
- 31:32Tad Eggleston: chiefs of staff to congressmen, like, one of the people on the chat just had to…
- 31:40Tad Eggleston: Remove himself from consideration to become…
- 31:43Phil: Good!
- 31:44Tad Eggleston: the head of…
- 31:46Tad Eggleston: the, the, I forget exactly what it is, but, but, like, special counsel for government workers, because it's a Senate-confirmed job, and thank God, there are just enough Republican senators who said, yeah.
- 32:02Tad Eggleston: you're just gonna say… you're just gonna walk away, because we don't want to have a hearing, and we're certainly not voting for you. Yeah.
- 32:14Phil: Which apparently is now the low, low bar to, to.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: To, to, to say that you, you are a, a…
- 32:26Tad Eggleston: a person of conscience in the Republican Party.
- 32:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you know… I will not vote to confirm a person who has openly said that they have a bit of a Nazi streak.
- 32:43Tad Eggleston: To a position in our government.
- 32:45Phil: Yeah, this is… this is,
- 32:48Phil: the thought… the joke that comes to mind is, you know hell's frozen over when Republicans are developing standards.
- 32:54Tad Eggleston: But, but mind you, I mean, these are boys will be boys in their 30s.
- 32:59Phil: Damn.
- 33:01Phil: Yeah, that's.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: That's another 14-year-old gets pregnant, she's having a baby.
- 33:05Phil: Yeah, that's… oi… that's a great way to, to frame that double standard.
- 33:11Phil: You know,
- 33:13Phil: That you're an adult when… when you make a decision that they… they want to go one way, but you're a child when you make a decision that they want to go the other way.
- 33:24Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, really, it's… women are adults as soon as they can breed. Yeah. And men are adults as soon as they're done staying and doing stupid things… At their convenience.
- 33:37Phil: Right. Yeah. Yeah, it's bullshit. It's… it's… it's grade A bullshit.
- 33:43Phil: Oof.
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. So, we have a brand new catalog.
- 33:50Tad Eggleston: Feel that! All sorts of new-to-order stuff. You're leading off with.
- 33:56Phil: Here we go, a heck of a book.
- 33:58Tad Eggleston: What.
- 34:00Phil: Some might even say a hell of a book.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, one of our upcoming, guests.
- 34:05Phil: Oh yeah, this is going to be The Crown, A Tale of Hell, number one.
- 34:10Phil: From Mike and Todd McNula, illustrated by Warwick Johnson Hadwell, from Dark Horse Comics.
- 34:17Phil: Hellboy's brothers fight for control of pandemonium in this demonic family reunion. But it isn't just the siblings who get involved in the power struggle, as their mother returns from her prison for the first time in 100 years, and has plans of her own.
- 34:30Phil: Mike Mignola is joined by his brother, Todd McNiola, which the other one was held by The Exorcistor.
- 34:36Tad Eggleston: There's, there, there's your, there's your answer.
- 34:38Phil: We were, before recording, we were, we were, struggling to remember the other time Todd came on board, and artist Warwick Johnson Cadwell, in this new Hellboy prequel series that's gonna be in stores February 11th, 2026, from Dark Horse.
- 34:52Tad Eggleston: And we're talking to Todd on Tuesday night.
- 34:55Phil: Yeah, tune in! It's gonna be exciting.
- 34:58Tad Eggleston: So, ho- hopefully… We have got a lot…
- 35:01Tad Eggleston: recording over the next few days, so Tuesday might, might mean as late as Friday or Saturday release.
- 35:11Tad Eggleston: But… but yeah, tune in.
- 35:13Tad Eggleston: Soon.
- 35:16Tad Eggleston: I… I… I…
- 35:20Tad Eggleston: I've read this, because it's already been part of an omnibus, but they're putting it out in single issues now.
- 35:27Tad Eggleston: Hank Howard, Pizza Detective, number one for the, the, the two Hollywoods, I am most excited…
- 35:41Tad Eggleston: Because… and it, like, almost makes me want to figure out how I can get one.
- 35:46Phil: The…
- 35:48Tad Eggleston: The 1 in 50… is… is not only a 3D cover, but a 3D interior.
- 35:56Phil: Oh, my goodness.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: Right, so New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti and world-renowned comics television David Lapham have combined powers to bring you a striking new vision in the fight against crime. Hank's investigation into a deadly international crime syndicate gets hot when long-time big Caligula employee is murdered in cold blood.
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: He'll stop at nothing to bring the killers to justice, journeying cross-country to the crime-laden streets of Hollywood.
- 36:23Tad Eggleston: California.
- 36:25Tad Eggleston: There, he'll face off against the Australian Mafia, dodge fire-spinning flamethrowers, high-caliber shootouts, and a kangaroo on a choke chain in the most explosive adventure yet.
- 36:38Tad Eggleston: This is from Bad Idea Comics. It'll be in stores on January 7th.
- 36:45Phil: That sounds fun.
- 36:45Tad Eggleston: And again, the 1 in 50 variant, is 3D.
- 36:51Phil: All.
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: I was initially really excited, because when I was looking at it in the catalog, it didn't have…
- 37:00Tad Eggleston: a ratio?
- 37:03Tad Eggleston: and… for a moment, I thought that maybe… we had… A. A.
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: Open order.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: 3D, and that would have been…
- 37:21Phil: Do you… do you have a special set of 3D glasses for occasions like this, or do you think they're… I mean.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: A, I do, but B, it will come with them.
- 37:32Phil: Okay, good. Because I do not keep 3D glasses on hand. I don't know if he'll pick that up, though, babe.
- 37:37Tad Eggleston: Dennis Kitchen sent me some.
- 37:39Phil: Oh, they're nice, those are…
- 37:41Tad Eggleston: with some 3D put.
- 37:42Tad Eggleston: Posters that he made.
- 37:44Phil: Oh, nice, extra special 3D.
- 37:45Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: So,
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: I don't normally, do the Fast Assembly editions, but we're gonna do a few of them this month.
- 37:55Tad Eggleston: Including…
- 37:59Tad Eggleston: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fanta Graphics, we are proud to present a series of replicant editions of classic Fanta Graphics comics from the company's storied history.
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: Beginning with the one that launched a thousand ships, the very first issue of Lovin' Rockets, Volume 1 from 1982.
- 38:21Tad Eggleston: Introducing Maggie, Hopi, Luba, and so many more of the extended Love & Rockets cast that readers still know and love almost 45 years on, including Gilbert's groundbreaking BEM,
- 38:32Tad Eggleston: Jaime's instant fan favorite mechanics, and so much more. Look for another classic Phantographics replicant next month. So yeah, loving rockets.
- 38:42Tad Eggleston: Number… Volume 1, Number 1, Fascimile Edition from…
- 38:46Phil: The Brothers Hernandez, we might be talking to Gilbert soon.
- 38:50Tad Eggleston: like… Tomorrow? Yeah, tomorrow.
- 38:58Tad Eggleston: I'm also in stores on January 28th.
- 39:02Phil: I'm also seeing now the, the… where the Watchmen influence is coming from with that, the blood spatter on yellow, and I'm pretty sure there was promotional material with all the characters standing in front of a, you know, like a…
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: And again, this is 82, Watchman is 84.
- 39:19Phil: Exactly, that's what the Watchmen influenced this is clearly.
- 39:22Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 39:22Phil: Where they were getting the ideas from, but that's so cool.
- 39:26Tad Eggleston: Gibbons got a lot… I mean, Gibbons… the way I understand it, and one of these days I'm gonna have to, like, go read the annotated Watchmen, that sort of thing, but the way I understand it, Gibbetts got, like, a lot.
- 39:38Tad Eggleston: of his visual ideas for what he wanted to do from Watchmen.
- 39:44Tad Eggleston: with Watchmen from… from Love and Rockets.
- 39:47Phil: Hell yeah.
- 39:49Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 39:51Phil: Alright, next up, I didn't realize this was, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Shiver of Christmas Town, but here it is, written by Torin, Bronbeck, apologies on the pronunciation, and Edu… and art by Edu Mena.
- 40:07Phil: Covers from Jay Lee, boys and girls of every age, time for something new and strange. Dynamite's first ever ongoing comic book series set in the world of the beloved film Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is coming this January. Written by Torin Gronbeck, illustrated by supernaturally talented Edu Mena, Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, The Shiver of Christmastown, returns to this… to the enchanted lands of Halloweentown and Christmastown.
- 40:30Phil: for an all-new tale of adventure that will have readers in stitches. It all begins with the unveiling of Dr. Frankenstein's newest creation, specially designed to be the scariest creature ever to celebrate All Hallows' Eat.
- 40:43Phil: something has gone awry in the process, and the final result is more shocks and shivers and something, and we're running out of time, so it's gonna be in stores January 7th.
- 40:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is one where we're gonna play them off the stage with music, because that's…
- 41:00Phil: Internet, internet.
- 41:01Tad Eggleston: Way too long of a…
- 41:03Phil: I can't even call it a blurb. Admittedly, I, I was.
- 41:08Tad Eggleston: Feels like they're trying to give us the entire plot of the…
- 41:11Phil: Yeah. Issue. We need to reference everyone from Nightmare Before Christmas. There we go.
- 41:18Tad Eggleston: So, let's look at some graphic novels.
- 41:22Phil: Yeah, this one, next up, we have The Girl Who Draws on Whales from Arila… Kristana?
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: below.
- 41:30Phil: Ariella Cristantina. Thank you very much for that one. Also coming from Dark Horse,
- 41:36Phil: And she is the artist of the Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel Adora in the Distance. The girl who draws on whales is a testimony to the power of stories and their uncanny ability to entertain, educate, and ultimately unite us. It's set in a fantasy world several centuries after the Great Flood. Sister Wangi and younger brother Banyu live in a sea village. Wang Yi has a special bond with the great whales that visit the sea village, and they allow
- 42:01Phil: Wangi to draw on their backs. Sometimes they return with new drawings on them.
- 42:06Phil: Wongi believes that there are other sea villages or island settlements scattered around, that they are sending her messages, but none of the elders listen to her.
- 42:15Phil: That sounds absolutely fantastic, gonna be in stores March 31st, 2026, again, from Dark Horse Comics.
- 42:26Tad Eggleston: I'm actually kind of surprised with myself for having missed… this…
- 42:33Tad Eggleston: with Volume 1, because this just is, like, my kind of cool young adult.
- 42:40Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 42:41Tad Eggleston: And I like… er, not even young adults.
- 42:43Phil: This is middle grade.
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: Right, middle grade. And I like Shelley Fish already. Kanga Yu!
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: Tests and Tournaments, a Wonder Woman graphic novel from Shelly Fish and Yancey Labatt. Is Jumpa ready to hop into action? Wonder Woman's home island of Themyscryro holds many surprises, the most adorable having floppy ears and long tails.
- 43:07Tad Eggleston: Kangas are companions and partners for the Amazon's beloved steeds and protectors of their bonded warriors.
- 43:13Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: and.
- 43:14Tad Eggleston: On the island, a school exists to train the next generation of Kangas for the many.
- 43:20Audio shared by Tad Eggleston: battles.
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: challenges of the future. Again, this is the second Kanga Yu graphic novel. It'll be in stores on June 3rd, a follow-up to The Lost in a Labyrinth.
- 43:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait a minute.
- 43:40Tad Eggleston: I just… I didn't…
- 43:42Phil: You jumped ahead.
- 43:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, da-da-da.
- 43:43Phil: Mmm…
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so I, I just read the… I'm sorry.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: Tests and Tournaments is in stores now. Lost in the Labyrinth.
- 43:54Tad Eggleston: Traps in the legendary Greek Labyrinth, Jumpa and her friends will face some of mythology's most fearsome creatures. We'll be in stores on March 3rd.
- 44:04Phil: right? There's gonna be a second Kangaroo-themed DC book, and that's… that's… it's clearly still not enough. This… this needs to… we need to.
- 44:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I mean, I feel like this is not something that's likely to go away.
- 44:18Phil: It, it… We can hope so.
- 44:20Tad Eggleston: Pretty awesome.
- 44:21Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 44:23Phil: Alright, now we have Nils, The Tree of Life, from writer Jerome Hammond and artist.
- 44:31Phil: Antoine, Carrion?
- 44:35Phil: The struggle between man and nature comes to a climax. This
- 44:40Phil: Ecological Future Fantasy by writer Jerome Hammond tells the story of a young man and his father searching for clues as to why life has ceased to thrive. Their journey will uncover a supernatural conspiracy between the nearby high-tech kingdom and the ruinous pursuit of eternal life. Mix in the return of long-forgotten and jealous gods, and you have a surreal fantasy of truly Wagnerian scope.
- 45:04Tad Eggleston: It's been out of print for 2 years, and now it's coming back in stores January 21st. And this is from… which publisher is this? I'm not totally sure. Magnetic and Oni.
- 45:15Phil: Knetic and Oni. Excellent, there we go, that's… that sounds very cool.
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: Teodora's letters.
- 45:24Tad Eggleston: An enslaved woman's fight for family and freedom.
- 45:29Tad Eggleston: by Marcelo de Salite.
- 45:32Tad Eggleston: In mid-19th century, millions of Africans were enslaved and brought to Brazil. Among them was the real-life Teodora.
- 45:39Tad Eggleston: who, separated from her husband and her son, worked in a home of priest… of a priest in Sao Paulo. Wishing to reconstruct the family ties lost during the journey from Africa to Brazil, and to achieve emancipation for herself and her family, she began…
- 45:56Tad Eggleston: She gave Claro, a black man who could read and write, money to help her write letters. Some addressed to her husband and her son.
- 46:05Tad Eggleston: whereabouts unknown, in the hopes that the letters would find them, and that they could achieve this quest together. And some addressed enslavers, intended to either help locate her family, or to persuade them to let her buy her freedom.
- 46:23Tad Eggleston: Give me just a second. The brat…
- 46:27Phil: Nope.
- 46:27Tad Eggleston: Turned on my CPAP.
- 46:29Phil: Wow! This is, Eddie's first interaction, despite my cats being here to ward him off. He's getting bolder.
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: So, this is from Fana Graphics Books in stores on January 28th.
- 46:42Tad Eggleston: They continue to put out fabulous, fabulous stuff in their 50th year.
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: Couple of collections.
- 46:57Phil: Alrighty, and this one is Don't Forget Your Briefcase from writer Elliot Rael and artist Philip Sevey.
- 47:04Phil: Everywhere the president goes, there is a military liaison who follows, carrying a briefcase with the codes to launch a nuclear strike. And it's just been lost. This is a story about what happens when a 10-year-old boy finds a nuclear football and accidentally brings the world to the brink of annihilation.
- 47:20Phil: In stores, January 7th, 2026.
- 47:27Tad Eggleston: I wouldn't let you have this one.
- 47:29Phil: That's fair.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: A.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: A, it's from our, our, our patron saint, and B is humor from our patron saint.
- 47:37Phil: I did not realize.
- 47:38Tad Eggleston: My gun is the jury and Other Stories from Jack Davis, Wally Wood.
- 47:46Tad Eggleston: Al Feldstein, Jack Mendelson, and a story from Harvey Kurtzman. Crazed Cartooning in… er, Davis is in Woods.
- 47:55Tad Eggleston: Craze Cartooning in Mad changed the art form and comedy itself forever, but their gonzo parody work in Mad' sister satire titled Panic
- 48:04Tad Eggleston: Published at the same time, is less well known. To invert that injustice, this volume of the Phanographics EC Artist Library presents all their zany, pun-packed panic lampoonery, especially their pomposity.
- 48:17Tad Eggleston: puncturing movie parodies, including Davis's My Gun is the Jury.
- 48:22Tad Eggleston: Come Back, Little Streetcar, A Star is Corn, and Wood's African Scream, Gone with the Widow, and 20,000 Leaks Under the Sea. These visual volleys are verbalized by Alf Edstein and Jack Mendelssohn.
- 48:39Tad Eggleston: Mendelssohn, would also write for TV's Laugh-In and The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, but the laughs don't languish. Also included is the never-before-rinted The Vampires.
- 48:53Phil: the vampires.
- 48:54Tad Eggleston: A riotous romp written by the legendary Harvey Kurtzman and drawn by Wood that vanished after its initial appearance more than 70 years ago.
- 49:04Tad Eggleston: So, yeah…
- 49:06Phil: A star is corn is killing me.
- 49:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 49:10Phil: That one keeps on hitting, holy shit.
- 49:12Tad Eggleston: Bollywood and Jack Davis doing… I mean, they…
- 49:17Phil: This book is somehow even more incredible than I thought by the title alone.
- 49:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. yeah.
- 49:26Tad Eggleston: I mean, I… I love…
- 49:30Tad Eggleston: the art and all of the EC horror and crime books, and often like the stories.
- 49:38Tad Eggleston: But Wood and Davis and Kurtzman just, like, their humor is off the charts.
- 49:45Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 49:47Phil: Historical humor becomes more and more interesting as time goes on.
- 49:52Phil: Yeah. Oh, I'm certain that there are things in this that, like…
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: We sit there and go, huh…
- 49:59Tad Eggleston: It'll be… it'll be like the… did you watch the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special?
- 50:05Phil: No.
- 50:06Tad Eggleston: They had a whole reel of things that they kinda regret.
- 50:10Phil: Mmm.
- 50:12Phil: Interesting.
- 50:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I think they, they, they, they, they did… I don't even think they, like, did the… it was a different time. It was, it was the things we probably shouldn't have done. But then they showed it again, so, I mean…
- 50:28Phil: Couldn't have been that bad.
- 50:28Tad Eggleston: about humor is, like…
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: If it's done in humor, where do you cross the… I mean, I really…
- 50:40Tad Eggleston: The consumer has a very different line.
- 50:42Phil: It does.
- 50:43Tad Eggleston: I think so. But, but, I still think… I mean, I think… I think really what they were saying is we would've… we possibly still would have done this sketch, but we would have written it a little bit differently today.
- 50:55Phil: Yeah, yeah. For me, some of the interest is figuring out why something was considered funny, and sometimes that
- 51:02Phil: interesting. Sometimes it makes it less funny, but, you know, sometimes it makes it more funny.
- 51:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:07Phil: It's always a mystery.
- 51:09Tad Eggleston: Yep. So, yeah.
- 51:12Tad Eggleston: New catalog?
- 51:15Tad Eggleston: This'll be Tyler's first catalog for his shop. No, actually, I think he ordered from the October catalog.
- 51:20Phil: Oh, okay, I was gonna say, I mean, he's gotta frame it. He's gotta frame his first catalog, you know?
- 51:25Tad Eggleston: Well, except that they don't really print them anymore, I don't think.
- 51:29Phil: Well, that's a bummer. I mean, it's understandable, that's a lot of paper, but that's… that's still…
- 51:33Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: So anyway, final order cutoff…
- 51:38Tad Eggleston: for Monday, November 3rd. We have Aggie from Mark Russell at Ace… and… oh, I'm sorry.
- 51:46Tad Eggleston: Mark Russell, ACO, David Lernzero, at AWA, out December 17th. All the Living, which I gave a read.
- 51:55Tad Eggleston: Last week, and it was quite good, from Roman Murdoff at Phantographics on December 3rd. Barbaric, The Long Death No. 1 from Michael Maurici and Nathan Gooden at Vault Comics on December 3rd.
- 52:07Tad Eggleston: Batman Green Arrow, The Question, Arcadia, number one from Gabriel Hardman at DC, out on November 26th. Charlie, Charles Chaplin, the funniest man in the world, from Seymour Chuast and Steven Brower at Fanet Graphics on December 3rd. I read that one this week as well, and enjoyed it.
- 52:26Tad Eggleston: quite a bit. A nice short biography of,
- 52:32Tad Eggleston: Chaplain, to give you a good feel, make you want to learn more about them.
- 52:37Tad Eggleston: Faster from Jesse Lonergan at Bulligan Press, December 3rd. This is actually a new version and a more widely available version of one that had previously only been available straight from Bulligan or off of Jesse's Table at Cons. Such a good book. I love Jesse Lonergan.
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: The Magnificent Adventure, The Perils of Giuseppe Bergman from Milo Monera at Fanagraphics on December 3rd. This is, an old adventure strip of Milo's that,
- 53:09Tad Eggleston: Owes a lot. It's got a lot of Quarto-Maltese-type feel.
- 53:13Tad Eggleston: I read the first chapter of it this week.
- 53:16Tad Eggleston: Ordained number one from Robert Menditti and Trevor Harrison at Bad Idea on December 10th. I read that one a while ago, before we talked to the Bad I… see, see, this is the week where I've actually read them all, or not quite all of them, but a lot of them, and I can go, you should go read this.
- 53:34Tad Eggleston: This is why, like, should we have any, PR people listening? This is why you send me shit. I read it.
- 53:40Phil: And then I go… Yeah, he does.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 53:44Tad Eggleston: Petro Cherry, I have not read, but it looks beautiful. Micheluzzi at Fanographics on December 3rd, and I have read We're Taking Everyone Down With Us from
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: Matthew Rosenberg, and Stefano Lendini with Jason Wordy. The collection will be available from Image Comics on December 10th.
- 54:05Tad Eggleston: Some crowdfunding?
- 54:08Tad Eggleston: Dracula Book 3, The Count from Matt Wagner and Kelly Jones is on Kickstarter until October 30th. The first two volumes of this are absolutely gorgeous and amazing and just, like, not even a vampire guy.
- 54:24Tad Eggleston: And I wound up loving these books. I just talked to Matt and Kelly, you can hear it now, and oh my god, are they excited about these books.
- 54:33Tad Eggleston: Feeling Messed Up from David F. Walker on Kickstarter, his mental health journey, available through, funding through October 30th. Our long national nightmare political cartoons from Tom Tomorrow on Kickstarter through October 30th.
- 54:47Tad Eggleston: The third issue of The Dead and the Damned from Sebastian Gerner and Kelly Williams at Ghost Flying Press on Kickstarter through October 31st. The Sync Halloween Special No. 1 from John Lee's and
- 55:01Tad Eggleston: Alex Cormack at Comics Tribe on Kickstarter through October 31st. The Comics Courier issue 3, edited by Tiffany Babb on Kickstarter through November 1st. Rigsby, Wisconsin, Volume 2, Burn It Down from S.E. Case on… from Iron Circus.
- 55:19Tad Eggleston: On Kickstarter through November 6th, Mangaka, Akaiju, and Omega, Juan Ponce and Lear Noise on Zoop through November 7th. The Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees Storytelling game, Hunter's Entertainment on Kickstarter through November 12th.
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: and the A1 Deadline Special, bringing together 2… Indie…
- 55:46Tad Eggleston: British indie comic anthologies from the 80s back, with many of their original creators and some new ones.
- 56:02Tad Eggleston: in stores, Or not in stores, funding on Kickstarter through November 12th.
- 56:09Tad Eggleston: So yeah.
- 56:10Tad Eggleston: A lot of good Kickstarters right now.
- 56:14Tad Eggleston: Anyway… My amazing books.
- 56:18Tad Eggleston: It was a tough week, because, A, everything I read was great, and B, I didn't read quite as much as I would have liked, because, well, my wife's in the hospital, so it's been an interesting week.
- 56:31Tad Eggleston: But,
- 56:34Tad Eggleston: kind of knew in my back pocket that the Ephemerada, shaping the Exquisite Nature of Grief from Carol Tyler at Phantom Graphics was gonna take that top spot when it was officially released, because…
- 56:45Tad Eggleston: This is Carol's masterpiece. Carol is one of the greatest…
- 56:52Tad Eggleston: Cartoonists of her generation, and her generation is a hell of a generation.
- 56:57Tad Eggleston: Bomb.
- 56:59Tad Eggleston: And this is her masterpiece.
- 57:01Tad Eggleston: I'm very much looking forward to Volume 2, though my heart, particularly having just… just finally watched the documentary about her and her husband, Justin Green, Married to Comics.
- 57:14Tad Eggleston: And knowing that the next volume of this is her dealing with his passing, I, like, feel for her as she works on it. Go check out my interview with her if you want to know more about this book, but the Ephemerada, Shaping the Exquisite Nature of Grief is,
- 57:36Tad Eggleston: Just… aside from just being an absolutely beautiful book, a really… moving… exploration of…
- 57:52Tad Eggleston: one woman's grief in a way that I think a lot of people will relate to.
- 57:57Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 58:02Tad Eggleston: Which is how it even managed to bite out Lazarus Fallen number 5.
- 58:06Tad Eggleston: Weesh.
- 58:07Phil: Talk about an issue full of grief.
- 58:08Tad Eggleston: 25, number 2. I did predict that they were both gonna be in the top list. I don't remember which order I had them in for my.
- 58:18Phil: I think you had them like this.
- 58:19Tad Eggleston: What?
- 58:20Phil: I think so… I said, I think you had them like this. I think you had Lazarus and then Powers.
- 58:23Tad Eggleston: I think I might have two, I don't remember. But, but yeah,
- 58:32Tad Eggleston: they kept their spots, no matter how good the other ones were. And there were a lot of good books this week. So, anyway…
- 58:40Tad Eggleston: Phil, you wanna take a walk?
- 58:42Phil: Sure, yeah, hey, I'm walking here,
- 58:45Phil: You know, this is my, my list of honorable mentions from mind blowers. Of course, Lazarus No. 5, Lazarus Fallen number 5 is one of those, as Lazarus is definitely a mind-blowing work, in my opinion. It's a lot of things, but…
- 59:02Phil: you know, it fit in with this. Then, of course, the other couple I have, a pair of titles from Monsieur Alan Moore, both Promethea with J.H. Williams III, from his imprint ABC Comics that was originally at Wildstorm, then bought by DC, and Providence, with Alan Moore and Jason Burroughs, Avatar Press. I feel like these two books
- 59:23Phil: Mind-blowing in different ways.
- 59:26Phil: You know, one about… kind of…
- 59:30Phil: goodness and the divine, and the other about, evilness, and, the profane.
- 59:37Phil: And, they're, they're a hell of a pair. And then, of course, this one is another deep cut, the, not manga, but Manhwa series, King of Hell, from Ra In Sue, published by Tokyo Pop way back when I was in high school. I'm thinking specifically there was a moment in a tournament arc where the main character, who is, you know.
- 59:58Phil: the titular King of Hell.
- 1:00:00Phil: He, he's fighting, other people and totally destroying them, and someone comes up to him afterwards and points out, like, your sword!
- 1:00:08Phil: it's not a magic sword. It's just… it's just a regular piece of metal. And he's like, yeah, that's how… that's how strong I am. And that was a mind-blowing moment for me when I read it in… in high school. This idea that, you know, oh, wow, like…
- 1:00:21Phil: I don't know, always having been a fan of magic swords, and the idea that, you know, like, Excalibur is what makes Arthur the king, and then it's like, no, it's what's in the person, it's not what's in the sword. It was a very good inversion of expectations there.
- 1:00:37Phil: And I'd say next up, Tad, how's One Piece going?
- 1:00:41Tad Eggleston: I read no one piece this week.
- 1:00:43Phil: That's understandable. It's been a busy week.
- 1:00:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I thought about it, like…
- 1:00:52Tad Eggleston: When I got home last night.
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: At 2 AM.
- 1:00:57Phil: That's…
- 1:00:58Tad Eggleston: Ehh.
- 1:00:58Phil: It's too late to consider reading more.
- 1:01:00Tad Eggleston: And I thought about it, when I woke up at… Five… But instead decided to…
- 1:01:13Tad Eggleston: Steal a couple more hours of sleep.
- 1:01:17Phil: I learned.
- 1:01:17Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah. I didn't get to it earlier in the week, and, and and I,
- 1:01:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah… the time that I thought to go…
- 1:01:32Tad Eggleston: To go read it, it just wasn't… there wasn't room.
- 1:01:37Phil: That's understandable. Understandable, having off week. I, just took a nose at, like, just started reading the first chapter of a book called Cat Plus Gamer,
- 1:01:47Tad Eggleston: That's been on my radar.
- 1:01:48Phil: Yeah, it's been very charming-looking. You know, it's like a busy office worker who, someone brings in a cat in a box, and she decides to take him home. And I mean, I'm sold already. I mean, I obviously love cats. I have two of my own, so I will read pretty much any comic in any form that is starring cats.
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: More, more evidence that, the cats are, are, are involved in the, robbery, I mean…
- 1:02:17Phil: They had to reveal that the original Mona Lisa was actually a cat.
- 1:02:21Tad Eggleston: Well, but I was actually just thinking that, like, comics have taught us that there are cats in Louvre.
- 1:02:27Phil: Oh, yeah!
- 1:02:28Tad Eggleston: They, like, know their places. I mean, my theory is that, like, the Ocean's Boys were the ones on the ladder and on the motorcycles, they just never actually entered the building.
- 1:02:39Phil: Oh.
- 1:02:40Tad Eggleston: the ladder.
- 1:02:41Phil: Release their man.
- 1:02:42Tad Eggleston: Joe.
- 1:02:43Phil: No, no, the masters were already inside. It was all in this direction. I see. They climbed down… I mean, the reason it seems so fast is that, like…
- 1:02:55Tad Eggleston: It had actually happened before they started climbing the ladders, but again, the misdirection…
- 1:03:04Phil: And if you'd read Wi3, you'd know that, cats have a different perception of the passage of time, because they weigh so much less than us.
- 1:03:14Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, no, it's, it's, it's, like, very, very… I think it's overwhelmingly clear that, that, that it was cats.
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: Over… overwhelmingly clear.
- 1:03:30Phil: Thankfully, not the kind you find on Broadway.
- 1:03:34Tad Eggleston: Those are fighting words with one of the friends of this podcast.
- 1:03:39Phil: That is true. That is me being facetious. Howard, if you're listening, I mean no… I mean no harm.
- 1:03:44Tad Eggleston: I don't know if Howard's a big fan of cats, I was thinking of Alexandra Bowman.
- 1:03:49Phil: Oh, okay.
- 1:03:51Phil: I see.
- 1:03:53Phil: I am merely poking fun at cats.
- 1:03:54Tad Eggleston: He's cosplayed as a cat.
- 1:03:56Phil: That's great! But were they cosplaying as a cat from cats? Yes. Or… okay. Yes. She was very much…
- 1:04:04Tad Eggleston: Cosplaying as a cat from CATS.
- 1:04:06Phil: Okay.
- 1:04:07Phil: Because, you know, there are plenty of people that cosplay as cats just as soon as.
- 1:04:10Tad Eggleston: No, I understand, but like… Alexandra is not to be reckoned with.
- 1:04:15Phil: That's fair, that's fair. I do not want to, throw hands this early in the morning about it.
- 1:04:20Tad Eggleston: Subject idea.
- 1:04:21Phil: I'm not well-informed.
- 1:04:24Tad Eggleston: That's my point.
- 1:04:25Phil: Yeah.
- 1:04:26Tad Eggleston: I can get away with saying that I'm not a huge Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, that I thought that he brought in the era of the…
- 1:04:36Tad Eggleston: the… Let's write an album, and then kind of put a… a story around it, rather than having the…
- 1:04:45Tad Eggleston: The songs be an integral part of…
- 1:04:49Tad Eggleston: The story that was all, you know…
- 1:04:53Tad Eggleston: I can get away with that when talking to her, but, like, messing with cats…
- 1:05:00Phil: Woof.
- 1:05:02Tad Eggleston: And, you know, it is based on, on… a selection of T.S. Eliot.
- 1:05:07Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: The poems are fantastic, so, like…
- 1:05:11Phil: It's fun to poke fun at, but I don't actually want to offend people.
- 1:05:16Phil: about… about making fun of cats. That… that's… I just want to make that clear.
- 1:05:20Tad Eggleston: Good kid. Yeah. So, this week's…
- 1:05:24Tad Eggleston: great responsibility is mind-blowing works. I'm gonna go ahead and lead off, because…
- 1:05:31Tad Eggleston: It took me a while to decide on something, because…
- 1:05:36Tad Eggleston: There's so many comics that I think are mind-blowing, and so many comics that…
- 1:05:42Tad Eggleston: that, like, even if they don't feel mind… like, when you put sex criminals down, I'm like, yeah, I guess when I read that the first time, it was mind-blowing, but it doesn't feel mind-blowing anymore, because I've read it and re-read it, and, like.
- 1:05:58Tad Eggleston: And that's… that's not bashing it, it's certainly not bashing, but what I was really… what I was really looking for was…
- 1:06:06Phil: a comic that…
- 1:06:09Tad Eggleston: Was both mind-blowing, but never ceases to be mind-blowing.
- 1:06:14Phil: Hmm…
- 1:06:15Tad Eggleston: that I also hadn't spent much time talking about here or at American Nature Presidents.
- 1:06:23Tad Eggleston: came up with was… was my management by Matt Kidd.
- 1:06:28Tad Eggleston: Have you read Mind Management?
- 1:06:31Phil: I have read the first issue. I picked up the first issue in single issues, and I forget why, I didn't keep reading it, but I'm aware of it, but I have not read the whole thing.
- 1:06:41Phil: So I need to.
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: There are marginal notes.
- 1:06:44Phil: Yeah.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 1:06:46Phil: Yeah. I mean, there were, like, hidden messages on the covers.
- 1:06:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is the first time that I started to speculate. I mean, I should have brought up my omnibuses that I didn't
- 1:06:59Tad Eggleston: club with, and when I book club.
- 1:07:02Tad Eggleston: books not for the show, and it's, like, sit-down book clubs where we're really gonna go through stuff together. I tend to put post-it notes on things that I…
- 1:07:11Tad Eggleston: I had post-it notes on almost every page. I had 3 post-it notes on some pages.
- 1:07:16Phil: Oh, wow, yeah.
- 1:07:18Tad Eggleston: Aww. Yeah.
- 1:07:19Phil: I've heard nothing but great things, and even if… Like, I can't imagine what Matt had to do to construct it.
- 1:07:27Phil: Yeah, I mean, that's…
- 1:07:29Tad Eggleston: Totally imagine, like, the murder board all… Yeah.
- 1:07:35Phil: He's gonna be like, that's my secret, I always plot.
- 1:07:36Tad Eggleston: I mean, there's stories within stories, there's…
- 1:07:42Tad Eggleston: Foreshadowing and red herrings, the art is beautiful, the dialogue is beautiful, even if you're not catching
- 1:07:51Tad Eggleston: The deepness, you can have fun with it, but, like…
- 1:07:55Tad Eggleston: the depth is too obvious not to catch, and then the decision is, are you gonna go all in and try to play the game with them, or are you just gonna read it and enjoy the ride? And you can do either!
- 1:08:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, this is… it's a book that I feel like I peel back a new layer every time I read it.
- 1:08:17Phil: And that…
- 1:08:18Tad Eggleston: -Oh.
- 1:08:19Phil: absolutely intrigues me, and is a signpost that I was aware of it before, but now it is… it has jumped from, I should read this, to a must-read, because.
- 1:08:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, I guess… I guess one of the things I can say, because I also thought of putting, and I'll bring it up.
- 1:08:37Tad Eggleston: He did a book called… Red-handed, The Fine Art of Strange Crimes.
- 1:08:48Tad Eggleston: Which, to me, is… like… a rough draft of mind management?
- 1:08:57Phil: Oh, that's always interesting to find.
- 1:08:59Tad Eggleston: Like, condensed into a small town.
- 1:09:06Phil: Wow.
- 1:09:07Tad Eggleston: You know, so rather than this globetrotting, epic…
- 1:09:13Tad Eggleston: Whatever. Like, it's… It's all… condensed into…
- 1:09:25Tad Eggleston: One smallish town with a detective, supposedly solving mostly mundane mysteries.
- 1:09:36Tad Eggleston: But it doesn't.
- 1:09:39Tad Eggleston: stable.
- 1:09:39Phil: Thank you.
- 1:09:40Phil: Yeah, I haven't read a ton of Matt Kint.
- 1:09:45Tad Eggleston: particular… you know, he's kind of like Jeff Lemire. Yeah.
- 1:09:49Phil: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: Where when he's writing for somebody else,
- 1:09:54Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:09:55Tad Eggleston: Though there are definitely people that when he's writing for, it's like, oh, like, he's… he's working with…
- 1:10:01Tad Eggleston: with David Lapham coming up.
- 1:10:03Phil: Absolutely. Yeah, that's exciting.
- 1:10:06Tad Eggleston: Abraham Mustafa coming up. That's exciting. Absolutely. He's worked with, Gabriel Walter in, like.
- 1:10:13Phil: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:14Tad Eggleston: Right off the bat.
- 1:10:15Phil: Walt is incredible. I know he's doing They're All Terrables, and that's been fun.
- 1:10:18Tad Eggleston: and don't get me wrong, like, his Valiant stuff is good.
- 1:10:26Tad Eggleston: Great superhero comics.
- 1:10:28Phil: When he draws for himself, it's next level.
- 1:10:30Tad Eggleston: But it's not… I mean, like Lemire and his DC stuff, it… it's not…
- 1:10:39Tad Eggleston: He doesn't stand out, stand out when he's doing work for hire and not drawing.
- 1:10:45Phil: Yeah… I can… yeah, I can imagine that.
- 1:10:48Tad Eggleston: He falls into the category of very good. He, like, he does… never writes anything unreadable, and, like.
- 1:10:55Tad Eggleston: or into, like, the given character or whatnot, it's probably one of the best runs on the character. But there is so much super… you know what I mean?
- 1:11:04Phil: Yeah, yeah, I absolutely do here.
- 1:11:06Tad Eggleston: It's much harder to differentiate yourself in the superhero realm.
- 1:11:12Phil: It is. Well, not only that, but, like, there's so much superhero stuff that comes out in any given time period that it's… it's… it's so hard. It… it…
- 1:11:23Phil: it's not only is the quality going to vary depending on how much you like the writer and how much you like the character, but it's also going to vary on which artist got assigned to them at that given time, how long they were able to build a story for, all kinds of different things. So yeah, being a head and shoulders standout
- 1:11:42Phil: Among superheroes is a very different game from…
- 1:11:45Phil: being able to, to do that as creator-owned. Revolver, I see now as, is, that was…
- 1:11:50Tad Eggleston: Matt Kid.
- 1:11:51Phil: Yeah, the first…
- 1:11:52Tad Eggleston: fantastic.
- 1:11:52Phil: It was really good. It was the first match. Tyler J.
- 1:11:55Tad Eggleston: Tyler Jenkins, when he works with Tyler Jenkins, it's generally very, very…
- 1:11:58Phil: I need to read Folklords with Matt Smith, that's one that's really, really intriguing to me.
- 1:12:03Tad Eggleston: It's good, I need to reread it.
- 1:12:05Phil: Okay.
- 1:12:06Tad Eggleston: I was… I was mildly underwhelmed. I had…
- 1:12:09Phil: Mmm…
- 1:12:10Tad Eggleston: And I actually wonder if they'd wanted to do more, and it just didn't sell well enough.
- 1:12:14Phil: Oh, I can see that.
- 1:12:16Tad Eggleston: It just felt abrupt. Super spy.
- 1:12:19Phil: I mean, that's, I think, part of the…
- 1:12:21Tad Eggleston: the…
- 1:12:22Phil: Me either.
- 1:12:23Tad Eggleston: Part of the MAG Management The ether's good.
- 1:12:26Phil: Yeah, with
- 1:12:27Phil: with David Rubin, that's… that's another series I've read most of, I don't think I read the last.
- 1:12:31Phil: series or two, but…
- 1:12:33Tad Eggleston: So yeah, I mean, we're talking just…
- 1:12:38Phil: Yeah, he's done so much. That's the other thing that's difficult when, you know.
- 1:12:42Tad Eggleston: So little of it is anything other than great.
- 1:12:46Phil: Yeah!
- 1:12:48Phil: I, I will say, you're, you're…
- 1:12:50Tad Eggleston: Like, his, his, his low threshold is very, very good.
- 1:12:56Phil: Yeah, right, yeah. I know what you mean.
- 1:13:00Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean?
- 1:13:01Phil: Right.
- 1:13:03Phil: Oh, and I've read, the Frankenstein Agent of Shade, film…
- 1:13:07Phil: It was fine. It was one that got canceled pretty quick, so that was kind of a bummer, because I was like, oh, this was one of the weirder books.
- 1:13:16Tad Eggleston: with him and Jeff Lemire.
- 1:13:18Phil: Yeah, I think Jeff Lemire started it out, and then.
- 1:13:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:13:21Phil: he picked it up right before it got canceled. But it was fun.
- 1:13:24Tad Eggleston: The only person to draw any, sweet tooth.
- 1:13:30Phil: Yep, that too, yeah. No, wait, I think… no, no, that was a special issue. That was a special issue, so that's why. That doesn't count. But yeah, he did… he did regular Shoes of Sweet Tooth, one of the flashback arcs, yeah. So, I was gonna say, though, you're… you're…
- 1:13:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, mind management is another, and I haven't…
- 1:13:51Tad Eggleston: Still there, Kat?
- 1:13:53Phil: Oh, I thought… I didn't know if, you were gonna say.
- 1:13:56Tad Eggleston: But, yeah, I'm here.
- 1:13:57Phil: I was gonna say, okay, okay, I was gonna say that your standard of, having something that's mind-blowing, that continues to be mind-blowing, it's, it's a… that's a huge, that's a high, high bar, which is why I'm definitely intrigued to pick up Mind Management.
- 1:14:10Phil: But it's… Honestly, one of the few…
- 1:14:15Phil: comics I can think of that do that is, like, The Filth by Grant Morrison, or… I mean, honestly, Grant Morrison's stuff tends to be that way for me, but even then, it's…
- 1:14:24Phil: So, like, specifically, the reason I chose Sex Criminals over Providence is because I've only read through Providence once, and while it did blow my mind, it completely shifted my sense of consciousness when I read it.
- 1:14:35Phil: I questioned whether I'd have that experience a second time or not, you know? And I wanted to do something a little more lighthearted after last times was, you know, the super dark, cursed text, fucked up book, so…
- 1:14:45Phil: Sex Criminals is, my pick for a mind-blowing work. This was… I mean, it's also… it's also a double entendre, a different kind of mind-blowing work. But yeah, I… I absolutely loved this book, when it came out. I jumped on from issue one.
- 1:15:00Phil: It is the book that fully made me a lifelong Matt Fraction fan. He was someone whose work I had, at Marvel, I had, you know.
- 1:15:11Phil: seen some of, not read all of, had ups and downs, you know, was… but it didn't… it didn't solidify me for him. But, this, Sex Criminals, oh, smashed out of the park. I… I… that's where I first was like, oh, this guy's funny. He does humor.
- 1:15:29Phil: Okay, that's… and that was kind of the way in to the rest of his work, is seeing the humor and the lightheartedness made the more mind-bending stuff more appealing. And again, it's also the book that if… if I hadn't read this, I wouldn't be the person I am today. It, you know, it helped me through a difficult, lonely time in my life, and I think it's absolutely fitting that it is the
- 1:15:51Phil: You know, the second book in my comic collection that my wife found, and then started reading on her own.
- 1:15:58Phil: Because it's the kind of book that I was so tempted to, like, recommend to her, because I told her about it, and I was like, honey, this is one of my favorite books of all time. It means so much to me.
- 1:16:10Phil: you will read it one day, but I don't want to pressure you and force it on you and tell you how great, how much you're gonna love it. But then when she discovered it herself and read it herself, and she absolutely loved it, I was like, okay, validation.
- 1:16:22Phil: You know? It's just… It's such a perfect combination of humorous and heartwarming and deep, the character work.
- 1:16:34Phil: I love even the way the series ends in how it is simultaneously about the end of the story and how stories end in a general way that is so, so unique.
- 1:16:47Tad Eggleston: Well, and in Issue 69.
- 1:16:49Phil: Yes, exactly.
- 1:16:50Tad Eggleston: Issue 69. Yeah!
- 1:16:52Phil: It's also the only series that I've bought… I've bought A and B covers for. I got all the, the, the, X-rated covers that they did that were…
- 1:17:00Tad Eggleston: Whereas I only bought the B covers.
- 1:17:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:03Phil: I could go back and get the A covers. Yeah.
- 1:17:07Tad Eggleston: Did… did… Were you one of the sad sap letters at the back?
- 1:17:11Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, no! Do I need to go back and look?
- 1:17:14Phil: No, I never, I never appeared in the pages of Letter Daddies, so I did not…
- 1:17:19Tad Eggleston: That was also one of the things that made this book.
- 1:17:22Phil: Yeah, 100%, the letters column fucking made this book. I mean, yeah.
- 1:17:26Tad Eggleston: Sex Criminals Like Saga is almost interactive.
- 1:17:30Phil: Yeah, it's the… it's the greatest letters column I've ever seen. I shudder to think that it could ever be topped. That's how great it is.
- 1:17:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, see, whereas I… I… I put Saga right there with it already.
- 1:17:45Phil: That's fair. That's a good one, too. That's… it's…
- 1:17:48Phil: Saga's great, that was… I've definitely responded to the… the reader survey in Saga.
- 1:17:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:17:54Tad Eggleston: So, yeah… Yeah, I accidentally muted my microphone.
- 1:18:01Phil: Oh!
- 1:18:02Tad Eggleston: I didn't manage to do as many interjections in there as I might have. I see.
- 1:18:07Tad Eggleston: what I was… was trying to say before you jumped in on sex criminals.
- 1:18:12Phil: Oh, sorry.
- 1:18:12Tad Eggleston: Thank you for doing that, because I muted the microphone and not figured it out, so we would have had way more dead space. Is that,
- 1:18:21Tad Eggleston: There are definitely other series that, like, Saga amazes every time.
- 1:18:27Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:27Tad Eggleston: Sex Criminals amazes every time. Like, mind management is the… isn't the only one that gets better every time I read it. Yeah.
- 1:18:38Tad Eggleston: But I guess there's something between…
- 1:18:41Tad Eggleston: To me, there's a difference between
- 1:18:44Tad Eggleston: Getting better, and amazing, and mind-blowing.
- 1:18:47Phil: There is. There absolutely is.
- 1:18:49Tad Eggleston: Sex Criminals was mind-blowing when I read Volume 1, but it wasn't even mind-blowing
- 1:18:58Tad Eggleston: Issue to issue. To me.
- 1:19:00Phil: Yeah. After that.
- 1:19:03Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 1:19:04Phil: It was, again, it was for me primarily. The letters column was.
- 1:19:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I mean, there were moments… there were moments that were.
- 1:19:11Phil: The criminal issue?
- 1:19:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, no, no, there were totally moments that were.
- 1:19:17Phil: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:20Phil: I guess, so for me, the other.
- 1:19:21Tad Eggleston: Not in that… I mean, I guess… I guess I kind of used mind-blowing as mind-twisting?
- 1:19:27Phil: Mmm…
- 1:19:28Tad Eggleston: You know, as mind-blowing as broke my brain.
- 1:19:33Tad Eggleston: And continues to break my brain.
- 1:19:36Phil: Right, and so… and I took Mind Blowing as mind expanding, because this is one…
- 1:19:41Tad Eggleston: That works. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:42Phil: Yeah, because this helped expand what comics could be for me, this helped expand what sex could be for me.
- 1:19:48Tad Eggleston: Well, and either one of them is absolutely accurate.
- 1:19:53Tad Eggleston: Like, again, none of this was, was, like, why shouldn't have picked that? It was so…
- 1:19:57Phil: Yeah.
- 1:19:59Tad Eggleston: Trying to, like, define what… I mean, again, part of it was, like, I wanted… I've talked about so many books… I mean, 700.
- 1:20:07Phil: oddest.
- 1:20:08Tad Eggleston: episodes in. I've talked about so many books so many times.
- 1:20:13Phil: I'm sure that angle may…
- 1:20:16Tad Eggleston: wanted.
- 1:20:16Phil: harder for you.
- 1:20:16Tad Eggleston: try to pick something that I didn't feel like I talked about a lot.
- 1:20:20Phil: Yep.
- 1:20:21Tad Eggleston: Both Mind Managen and Sex Criminals are books that I want to book club at some point.
- 1:20:26Phil: Hell yeah. I… I would be… I would be very intrigued on both of those.
- 1:20:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm kind of hoping that the Saga Book Club will, will, will…
- 1:20:35Phil: Turn into?
- 1:20:36Tad Eggleston: rolling into…
- 1:20:38Phil: I mean, that's…
- 1:20:39Tad Eggleston: series after that.
- 1:20:40Phil: That would be a heck of a crew to talk about sex criminals with, you know?
- 1:20:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It would be a heck of a crew to talk about mind management as well.
- 1:20:47Phil: it would.
- 1:20:47Tad Eggleston: Also.
- 1:20:48Phil: Because the reason why I had… I bought the A and B covers is because I would, you know, cherish them both, but the A covers were the ones that my mom would read.
- 1:20:58Tad Eggleston: That's fair. Yeah. That's fair.
- 1:21:05Tad Eggleston: I got a busy day, and we still have.
- 1:21:10Phil: We can make… we can make the hour and a half.
- 1:21:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we still need to record the drops, so, let's move into books we hope will be spectacular. It's actually kind of a light week for…
- 1:21:24Tad Eggleston: Single issues.
- 1:21:26Phil: Yeah, I imagine… Fifth week.
- 1:21:29Tad Eggleston: Week for collections.
- 1:21:32Phil: It is a fifth week. Fifth weeks usually do turn out.
- 1:21:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:21:36Tad Eggleston: Unless there's a fifth week event, or unless they.
- 1:21:39Phil: Yeah.
- 1:21:39Tad Eggleston: go light on week one. There's a million different…
- 1:21:43Tad Eggleston: But I am gonna, like, I still had 3… 3 definite…
- 1:21:52Tad Eggleston: definite ones that I hope will be spectacular. First is Facing Feelings Inside the World of Raina Telgemeyer, the, exhibit book from her Billie Ireland…
- 1:22:05Tad Eggleston: Exhibit from… Last year, I think? Maybe the year before?
- 1:22:14Tad Eggleston: out from Scholastic. It was the first time they ever, ever gave both of their exhibit rooms to the same exhibit, was for Raina Telgemeyer.
- 1:22:23Tad Eggleston: Because one room just wasn't enough.
- 1:22:26Tad Eggleston: So I'm very much looking… I loved the exhibit. I'm very much looking forward to,
- 1:22:32Tad Eggleston: Going through the book. It's actually on Hoopla already,
- 1:22:36Tad Eggleston: which I may flip through, but I… I get to see Raina in conversation with Lucy… Lucy Nisely.
- 1:22:44Phil: That's gonna be amazing.
- 1:22:45Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 1:22:46Tad Eggleston: In a couple of weeks, and that's where I'll get my physical copy of the book.
- 1:22:51Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:22:52Phil: That's gonna be a spectacular event.
- 1:22:54Tad Eggleston: That's why we had to reschedule Saga.
- 1:22:57Phil: Yeah. Yeah, understood, yeah.
- 1:23:01Phil: Either of those people, much less both?
- 1:23:04Tad Eggleston: R-right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:07Tad Eggleston: So,
- 1:23:09Tad Eggleston: Next, I have loved the Godzilla vs. America stories, and we now have Godzilla vs. Kansas City!
- 1:23:17Tad Eggleston: with Freddie Williams, Baldemar Rivas, Jake Smith, and Buster Moody contributing. And we're gonna do a Batman double feature, because,
- 1:23:29Tad Eggleston: Both Batman and Robin Year 1 and Batman The Last Halloween are wrapping up this week. Final issues of both of them, Mark Waite and Chris Samney on Year 1, Jeff Loeb, and for this issue, Matteo Scalera, but it's been 10 issues, 10 artists,
- 1:23:48Tad Eggleston: Because the idea of replacing Tim Sale with just one person just, like…
- 1:23:55Phil: Yeah.
- 1:23:55Tad Eggleston: Nobody was willing to do that.
- 1:23:57Phil: No, I don't blame them.
- 1:24:01Tad Eggleston: So those both wrap up, those both have been fantastic series. So yeah, big collection that I do want to call out, anybody who hasn't read it. Well, a couple of them that I want to call out.
- 1:24:14Tad Eggleston: Ballad of Halo Jones, the full-color omnibus. Halo Jones is one of Alan Moore's early works, one of my favorite works of his, and the coloring job by Barbara Nesenzo on this is just outstanding.
- 1:24:27Phil: It would have been in black and white before.
- 1:24:29Tad Eggleston: And I've read it in black and white.
- 1:24:31Phil: Okay.
- 1:24:33Tad Eggleston: Ian Gibson's line art is also outstanding. This is, it's another one of those Alan Moore projects that never really got finished, kind of like big numbers.
- 1:24:48Tad Eggleston: Thankfully few times.
- 1:24:50Tad Eggleston: What?
- 1:24:50Phil: I was saying, thankfully, a few of those in his… in his career, but…
- 1:24:55Tad Eggleston: couple of times he's… he's… he's, like, laid out the overall plan and, like, talks or whatnot, and I'm like…
- 1:25:02Phil: Yeah. It's criminal.
- 1:25:04Tad Eggleston: Criminal.
- 1:25:04Phil: unfinished work.
- 1:25:06Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, The Ballad of Halo Jones, might be my favorite Alan Moore. It's really between that and Jack B. Quick.
- 1:25:15Phil: Neverm.
- 1:25:15Tad Eggleston: my favorite Ellen Moore works.
- 1:25:17Tad Eggleston: Also available this week in collected edition, Who Are the Power Pals? from Dwayne Murray and Ahmad Rafat, with Rob Jones on color at Dark Horse. This was such a fun book.
- 1:25:30Tad Eggleston: I highly, highly recommend it. So… Phil, what is… Your trade waiter, graphic novel.
- 1:25:38Phil: My trade waiter pick is Department of Truth, Volume 6, another James Tynan, series with art from Letizia Katanici and Martin Simmons, Geordie Belair, Letters by Aditya Biddikar, Image Comics. I've only read Volume 1 of this series, but it was really great.
- 1:25:57Tad Eggleston: Oh, it's amazing.
- 1:25:59Phil: And that's.
- 1:25:59Tad Eggleston: mind.
- 1:26:01Tad Eggleston: But, but I, I have all the single issues.
- 1:26:03Phil: Yeah, it's another one. I mean, it's… talk about… this is… this one was… was an incredible horror without being…
- 1:26:11Phil: visually over the top. In terms of gore and violence. This was pure, like, terror.
- 1:26:19Phil: disturbing, like, oh, the star-faced man was creepy. Creepy as all get out. But yeah, really incredible series I need to catch up on one day. Lots of other good trades. It might be a slow week for single issues, but I did see a good amount of good trades coming out, so…
- 1:26:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, this was a really… Particularly collection-heavy week.
- 1:26:40Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, I think that that is it for episode 207.
- 1:26:46Tad Eggleston: For… for Phil, this is… this is… I hate introducing myself. This is Tad, this has been 22 Panels, and we will see you…
- 1:26:59Tad Eggleston: After the next page.
