- 0:48Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:54Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's Word with notes, quotes,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and stories, along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:03Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:06Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that he has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. In Lamentations,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Chapter three, verses twenty two and twenty three, we read,
- 1:16Speaker 1: because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed,
- 1:20Speaker 1: for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Great is your faithfulness. Now, if you miss a portion

- 1:29Speaker 1: a friend, you can hear this program anytime online at
- 1:33Speaker 1: Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now, here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Romans five eight says, but God demonstrates his own love
- 1:44Speaker 2: for us in this while we were still sinners, Christ
- 1:50Speaker 2: died for us. You know, the phrase that has been
- 1:54Speaker 2: used in many many examples is the phrase of God's
- 2:01Speaker 2: demonstrating his own love while we were still sinners. Neither
- 2:08Speaker 2: do I condemn you, he said, You know we read
- 2:13Speaker 2: in another passage, John chapter eight and verses one through
- 2:18Speaker 2: eleven describes an event where God demonstrates this forgiveness in
- 2:25Speaker 2: such a remarkable way. The scripture says, at dawn he
- 2:30Speaker 2: went to the temple complex again, and all the people
- 2:33Speaker 2: were coming to him. He sat down and began to
- 2:36Speaker 2: teach them. Then the scribes in the Pharisees brought a
- 2:40Speaker 2: woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center. Teacher.
- 2:46Speaker 2: They said to him, this woman was caught in the
- 2:48Speaker 2: act of committing adultery in the law Moses commanded us
- 2:53Speaker 2: to stone such a woman, So what do you say?
- 2:57Speaker 2: They asked this to trap him in order that they
- 3:00Speaker 2: might have evidence to accuse him. Jesus stooped down and
- 3:06Speaker 2: started writing on the ground with his finger. When they
- 3:09Speaker 2: persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them,
- 3:14Speaker 2: the one without sin among you should be the first
- 3:17Speaker 2: to throw a stone at her. Then he stooped down
- 3:20Speaker 2: again and continued writing on the ground. When they heard this,
- 3:25Speaker 2: they left one by one, starting with the older men.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Only Jesus was left with the woman in the center.
- 3:35Speaker 2: When Jesus stood up, He said to her, woman, where
- 3:39Speaker 2: are they? Has no one condemned you? No one, Lord?
- 3:44Speaker 2: She answered, neither do I condemn you? Said Jesus, go
- 3:51Speaker 2: and from now on do not sin anymore. The Pharisees
- 3:59Speaker 2: were always rigid in their interpretation of the Mosaic law,
- 4:04Speaker 2: and this was not due to their ability to keep
- 4:07Speaker 2: the law, but more because of their respected position and
- 4:10Speaker 2: reputation within the community. Although this respect would have been
- 4:15Speaker 2: granted to one of humility, it became a bone of
- 4:19Speaker 2: contempt because of their hypocrisy and pride. Jesus challenged the
- 4:24Speaker 2: hypocrites of his day and in many cases revealed their
- 4:28Speaker 2: real motives. No one of position and power enjoys being challenged,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and certainly not to reveal their true motives. One noted
- 4:39Speaker 2: occasion is recorded, as we read in John's Gospel, a
- 4:44Speaker 2: very clever trap was contrived by the Pharisees to catch
- 4:48Speaker 2: Jesus in disobedience to the law. The woman was caught
- 4:53Speaker 2: in the very act of adultery and brought to Jesus,
- 4:56Speaker 2: as the scripture describes. For this act of adultery, the
- 5:01Speaker 2: law required her to be stoned to death, to be
- 5:04Speaker 2: found in Leviticus, chapter twenty and verse ten. The court
- 5:08Speaker 2: of conviction is arranged and Jesus enters the circle of
- 5:13Speaker 2: her accusers. Now it is only he that's willing to
- 5:18Speaker 2: stand with her. The circle is made up of men
- 5:21Speaker 2: young and old who are prepared to carry out the
- 5:24Speaker 2: legal execution of this adulteress. They are each armed with
- 5:29Speaker 2: the stones to be used to put her to death
- 5:31Speaker 2: for this terrible, sinful act. Again, the interpretation of the
- 5:35Speaker 2: law was flawed because it would have required both the
- 5:39Speaker 2: adulteress and the adulterer to be stoned. Nevertheless, Jesus ignores
- 5:45Speaker 2: their plan and bends down to begin writing something in
- 5:50Speaker 2: the dirt. The scripture doesn't tell us exactly what he writes.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Perhaps it's the names of many of the men in
- 5:58Speaker 2: the circle who had been with this same woman, or
- 6:02Speaker 2: it could have been the levitical law which would convict both,
- 6:06Speaker 2: we don't know. After writing, Jesus stands up and places
- 6:11Speaker 2: a charge of sin to all the men in the circle.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He says, he that is without sin, let him cast
- 6:20Speaker 2: the first stone. Then he bends down once more to
- 6:24Speaker 2: continue writing. One by month, each man leaves the circle
- 6:29Speaker 2: of condemnation, recognizing his own sin. Jesus knowing they're gone,
- 6:37Speaker 2: asks the woman, where are your accusers? She then realizes
- 6:43Speaker 2: that she has been spared and answers there are none.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Jesus forgives the adulterate in that very moment and declares
- 6:54Speaker 2: to her, neither do I condemn you, go and sin
- 7:00Speaker 2: no more.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.

- 7:49Speaker 2: Would that we would look upon sinners with the same
- 7:52Speaker 2: compassion and mercy. But God demonstrates his own love for
- 7:58Speaker 2: us in this While we were still sinners, Christ died
- 8:05Speaker 2: for us, and that is today's reflection on the Word.
