Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, ready for another little Amharic lesson? Luna: Always! What are we learning today? Lucas: We're going to talk about our hands and fingers. Very useful. Luna: Oh, I use my hands all the time! Let's do it. Lucas: The word for hand is እጅ. Say it with me: እጅ. Luna: እጅ. Lucas: Good! Now, the word for fingers is ጣቶች. Try it: ጣቶች. Luna: ጣቶች. That's a bit of a mouthful! Lucas: You got it. ጣቶች. Now, to say 'my hand hurts', you say እጄ ይታመማል. Listen: እጄ ይታመማል. Luna: እጄ ይታመማል. So 'my hand' is እጄ? Lucas: Exactly! እጄ means 'my hand'. And ይታመማል means 'hurts'. Now for counting fingers: we have five fingers, so አምስት ጣቶች. Say it: አምስት ጣቶች. Luna: አምስት ጣቶች. Five fingers, got it. Lucas: Let's practice. How do you say 'my hand hurts'? Luna: እጄ ይታመማል. Lucas: Perfect. And 'fingers'? Luna: ጣቶች. Lucas: Great. Now I'm going to hold up my hand. How many fingers do you see? Luna: Five? So, አምስት ጣቶች. Lucas: Yes! አምስት ጣቶች. You're a natural. Luna: Thanks! I'm going to use this next time I accidentally hit my hand on the table. Lucas: That's the spirit. By the way, speaking of support, a quick thing — if Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Amharic, a few listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That's what keeps this show ad-free and going. Luna: Yeah, it really does make a difference. So if you're enjoying these lessons, that's one way to help out. Lucas: Alright, back to fingers. So, let's review the four phrases we learned today: እጅ, ጣቶች, እጄ ይታመማል, and አምስት ጣቶች. Luna: Can I try them all in one sentence? Lucas: Please do! Luna: እጄ ይታመማል ምክንያቱም አምስት ጣቶች አሉት. Wait, that doesn't make sense. Lucas: Close! But we say 'because it has five fingers' differently. We'll cover that another time. For now, just remember the basics: እጅ, ጣቶች, እጄ ይታመማል, አምስት ጣቶች. Luna: Got it. Practice makes perfect. Lucas: Exactly. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next episode.
