[upbeat music] There it is ladies and gentlemen, that Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast
• 0:18
theme music Means we're on On the air here in River West, Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Everyday Cycles Podcast Studio and Custom Bike Emporium. How's it going, gentlemen?
• 0:34
We got, uh, JK over there on the, uh... to my right. Hello. Yeah, stage sl- no. Over- Stage left Over that way. [coughs] Hello. And Mr. Tony Burger across the table. Hola. Yeah. He just waved, folks.
• 0:49
I did, 'cause people saw me. To, to the camera. [laughs] Someday we'll, we'll live stream this on video, 'cause that's just what the kids do these- [laughs] And then we have to behave...
• 0:59
that's what the kids do these days. [laughs] We'll do it on Facebook to be even more annoying. Live stream on Facebook? Yeah. Yeah.
• 1:06
Uh, that would be Facebook Watch, I believe, but I don't wanna copyright infringe on- Yeah... anything. They're already calling us. Yeah. The lawyers are already calling. I can... Oh, yeah. Yes.
• 1:16
Yeah, the Spidey sense is burning. So it's a little warm in the shop today. I'm gonna leave the AC on just 'cause it's- Yes... eh, it might get otherwise kinda moist. Yes, it already is. Moist. My ears. Moist. My ears.
• 1:31
The cans on my ears are making my ears moist. [clears throat] Seem to be the word of the weekend up in Michigan for some reason. Yes, indeed, indeed. Moist.
• 1:42
So two out of the three people at the table here went to Michigan last weekend. And one of the two of the three only went for one night. [laughs] One of the two of the three.
• 1:56
Well, Lloyd kinda backed you up on the front side- Exactly, yeah... 'cause, 'cause he actually left on the 6:00 a.m. ferry, rode with us up to Montague, and then rode back for the 4:45 ferry or whatever- Exactly...
• 2:05
he got on. Yeah, I was yapping with him today about that. I was going like [laughs]... Well, like he was saying, he's like... I'm like, "Dude, the 4:45?" I'm like, "You better, like, hump it." And yeah, he made it.
• 2:18
Yep, yep. Well, he moves pretty good when he's, uh, on the flats and, and rolling. Yeah. Well, he, he ran into an, uh, another group that were kinda humping it, so and that gave him a little impetus.
• 2:28
He got a little humpy. [coughs] Just saying. Yeah. Oh, right over and, yeah, give that a little closer to my- Lloyd, what was Lloyd riding? I didn't know he had a fat bike. He does not.
• 2:37
That's how come he could move more quickly than the fat bike people. Oh. Yep. He was staying in the hard sand. Right. We were riding all the way up to Silver Lake- Yeah...
• 2:44
which is a, some, un- just under 50 miles-ish from,
• 2:48
uh, Muskegon north, and he rode with us as far as Montague, which is around a little under halfway, where we kinda hung out for a little bit and then we went north and he went south.
• 2:59
But it was all, like, uh, bike trail- Yeah, from there-... plank... right. Oh, gotcha, gotcha. Yeah. It wa- It, it wasn't riding all the way up...
• 3:06
that would've been our- It wasn't the- 'Cause it, there were like a couple of causeways on the way if you even tried. Right. You'd just run into hassle after hassle- Yep... and hassle. Yeah.
• 3:16
It w- would've been, um, kind of rails to trails trail almost all the way to Silver Lake, too, like six miles short of it, but some jamoke at the bike shop in Montague said, "No, you guys should go this way along the lake," on a thing called Scenic Road, which seems like a really good idea.
• 3:34
  Not that good idea.
• 3:35
It's not only super rolling hills, like c- couple [laughs] hundred foot rollers constantly, so on loaded down fat bikes it was kind of, you know, like, it was doable but it wasn't as great as it could've been.
• 3:48
I mean, we rode fat bikes up there to ride the sand, not to ride on the road so much, but you have to get there to do the sand to, to, to... [laughs] but- Was there a lot of traffic? That was the thing.
• 3:57
There was 55 mile an hour traffic- Oh, bullshit... and people yelling and shit like that and- Oh, bullshit. Sorry... so. Had to happen. Yeah, it, it wasn't that great, but it was... You know, we made it.
• 4:05
We made it, folks. Yeah. Top of the hill. Then time to play. Yeah, yeah. So we had, we had fun there and then, and then we came back the, k- couple days later, and while we were up there we did a...
• 4:17
We stopped at Jimmy's in Montague. I don't remember if Lloyd was... He might even have still been there, or maybe not. Anyway, [coughs] uh, did a quick- How about the regatta?
• 4:27
I, I, I- Well, I, I- I knew there was a thought of- Let me get, let me get out of Montague first and then we'll come back- Thought you, I was- Then we'll come back to Montague later. I thought that was.
• 4:33
We're gonna come back to Montague later. I thought we were- We're, oh, we're still on our way up. Oh. We're not on our way back yet. My bad. [laughs] I thought you...
• 4:39
No, it sounded like just listening to- Well, we were in Montague-... nothing, no, no, no... two times. Now, so we're still on the way up and, uh- I'm with you...
• 4:44
so we s- when we were in the, when, in Jimmy's for lunch there, we did a quick, uh, at the table side podcast kind of a thing, which I'm gonna put in this radio program right about here just to irritate people because it's like bar noise and- Eh...
• 5:01
people talking and ordering food and stuff, but it's only a few minutes long. So, hey, this is, uh, this is Jimmy's in Montague. Rach, here. Good. Oh, wow. Hello. Ah. What's going on? Excuse me. Uh, testing.
• 5:16
Hanging out at Jimmy's here in Montague- Chicken burrito... discussing whether burgers or burritos are the way to go. Or sloppy joes. Or sloppy joes in Dave's case. Sloppy, sloppy joes. See? Chicken wrap.
• 5:27
Minimalist podcasting setup. Can I come? Does it work? Eh. Imagine a Jimmy's- Works better if you put it on top of a glass of beer like so, though. But then you can't drink your beer. Too much.
• 5:38
Well, au contraire, mon frere. This is difficult. You take the beer. [laughs] I'd be willing to bet the waiter will give you a sacrificial mug just for the, the podcast mention. This is a sacrificial mug.
• 5:51
[laughs] Just drink that one and get another. You don't have to be that self-depreciating. [laughs] I appreciate it. Does that pick up everybody? Yeah, pretty much. I must have been doing the snowball around.
• 6:03
I don't know. Three Well, let's- This snowball is good stuff... um, I'm gonna try the cheddar bacon ranch thing. What's the ranch part in it? It's ranch sauce, a homemade ranch sauce. Can you put that on the side? Yeah.
• 6:15
In case I don't want it. Yeah. And do you have barbecue to go with it? [laughs] This is difficult. I'd like some barbecue, let me ask. On the side as well? Sure. [laughs] Yes, I can do that for you. Thank you.
• 6:24
And the guy's like- But she says, "I don't understand"... the figure it's like rah, rah, rah, rah, rah Do you have a burrito special today? Yes, the beef- What you gonna do if I'm not home for Thanksgiving?...
• 6:32
beef burrito, you got a box of six of them. Yeah, I know. He's like talking, like, I don't know. I would do a small. All beef and beef. Yeah. They got the wet burrito there. That's it, yep. Oh, okay.
• 6:41
Oh, that looks like I'm getting wet. What's going on here? And oh, I don't understand. That's what it is. [laughs] Yes. [laughs] Yes. So you guys, you guys stopped here last time you were in, uh, Montague, right?
• 6:50
Thank you. This was a, a- Yes. What's sad is-... lunch stop last time... I have customers that are that drunk Or was it a dinner spot? Oh, God. Oh, this is as far as you made it the first day last time.
• 7:00
This is, I work for this company now- And it took us 12 hours to get here... that sells cars to people like that. Yeah. This is the la- And once in a blue moon- This is the only town we-...
• 7:06
they bring in a piece of mail that shows you're completely different group... but we didn't take that path to come here. Yeah. This was the only town that we- I've had people bring in disconnect notices.
• 7:12
[laughs] We stayed here, and then we went back. One bitch brings in an eviction notice. How many days was we last time? Nice. [laughs] Another one brings along a bankruptcy order.
• 7:19
That was like the first time Columbus came to- That's one thing, really, bankruptcy alone. And she brings in the bankruptcy letter- Yeah... as a proof of residence. Yeah.
• 7:25
I'm like, "You realize this will cancel everything." I'm like, "You realize this will cancel everything." "What do you mean?" Like- "You can't be in bankruptcy." "Well, I'm not."
• 7:29
"Then why are you getting letters from bankruptcy court?" "To get bankruptcy discharged." They don't send those automatically. All right, actually, good. They're not, they're not fishing for business.
• 7:38
It's like, "Hey, you have a bankruptcy." You're kinda stuck by the coast every trip, 'cause there's nowhere to really go inland that fast. I mean, the seventh circuit bankruptcy court, Peter someone's name.
• 7:43
Well, we went inland this far. Right. I mean, we went as inland as far as where- I, I got, I got a Subaru Forester. Across there where- Want to trade it for that one? [laughs]... came to trail 35.
• 7:51
Because there's $20,000 in a drug-related homicide case. Which you can't ride across. No, you can't. Why not? 'Cause you can't ride across, I guess. Well, fat bikes float. True enough. But- It's right there as well...
• 8:02
it was October. Not funny. I got fucked up. None of us were swimming. Concussions, not insurance. But I bet you tonight, if we get in there early enough- I wrecked my fucking truck... we're swimming, dude.
• 8:09
Pay 10,000 in damages and then have to restart. I just went bankrupt on it. Uh, no, I have not. I still got this fucking car payment. But I still have the pack raft, and- Yeah. A little hot and all...
• 8:17
it's on my list of things to do, is like, I l- I live by, I live by the river delta. Can I use my student loans to finance the bankruptcy? Yeah. But I couldn't include my student loans in the finance.
• 8:28
[laughs] Wouldn't that be cool if I could be like, "Boo, boo, bah." There's an 1100 low. Like, take the money to make the bill pay for the bankruptcy. When you buy? Yeah, get rid of that. Yeah.
• 8:37
Well, there's different ones. Take a loan, see what's going on. Now, now they have competition. And you're like, "Damn it." [laughs] There's different levels of pack raft. "Where's the fry?"
• 8:43
It's not just one model, right? In the beginning. In the beginning it was one. There was only one. In the beginning. Okay. But now I see they have three. I would, I mean, that's not the case.
• 8:52
And they, and they have other companies that are making them. Hm. Do you white water then? What's on the music to the jukebox? Never mind. Do you want to take it down like the Wolf River? Probably not.
• 9:04
I, I have- Is music choice one we can affect with an app? I know other people that- 'Cause those are great. Hm. I believe so. I see that up there, yeah. Ah, Montague. This here is right. Montague. Right on.
• 9:19
Is there an out one? All right then. There's gotta be, 'cause there's this, there's electric stuff running. So later, Spinner brought the full on fatbike.com podcasting rig. Oh, I heard.
• 9:33
It'd be funny if we did not podcast at all and I just carried that fucker. [laughs] Oh, we're, we're doing it now, so. We're gonna do it.
• 9:40
So you got this as a backup, just in case we never- I can't believe that's gonna sound good... set that thing up. I can't believe that's gonna- I didn't say it's gonna sound great. Okay.
• 9:47
It's gonna sound better than if you just had a phone. 'Cause that's been, like, six failed podcasts now. [laughs] So you're an, you're an experienced failed podcaster. Yeah.
• 9:58
That's what Cheech said to last night, was like, "Are we gonna try another failed podcast tonight?" "Fuck you, Cheech." [laughs] Oh, maybe that's the name of the show. But just so you know, I'm a podcast virgin.
• 10:08
I've never done this before. Is that a brass pole over there for real, or is it just holding the ceiling up? Uh, kinda looks like a stripper pole. I don't remember that being there.
• 10:16
And there's a brass pole, and there's a little bitty mirror ball up above it. Little bitty. Yes.
• 10:21
But- No, Spinner, obviously the other one's way better way to go, because the headset thing, A, makes it so a person doesn't have to know how to use a mic, 'cause it's always right in front of your mug. Yeah.
• 10:32
And B, that dynamic microphone pretty much cuts all the other noise out.
• 10:36
Well, when we had it, it was like, talk like this, and you're sit in your chair, and you're talking back here, and then you're talking like this, and you're talking this. Yep.
• 10:42
So the sound wasn't always getting- That's why you gotta, you gotta be like them. They've all got their little... And that's why I have to learn to speak in well-modulated tones.
• 10:49
And even, even for even pros like JK, it's still- And then we had to have Dave call in and be like, "Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah." It's hard to understand you when you use sober. [laughs] Right. That's true.
• 11:00
If, if, if you didn't film those fucking, uh, podcasts so late in the afternoon, you might catch me at a sober time. Yeah. [laughs] Or late in the evening. Yeah. Late in the evening. It's 3:00, I'm trashed already.
• 11:10
It's over at 11:30 AM. [laughs] Right. [laughs] Some people get the slur, though, after they have one drink, and they start to slur. I used to work with a couple people, they're like,
• 11:22
well, one drink, dude, and it's like, "Ho, ho, ho, ho." Three drinks, they're- Yep... dancing in your, in your lap. All right, well, for no other reason than to have sat here at Jimmy's and done this, peace out, yo. Woo!
• 11:40
Ah. Aren't we lucky we listened to that? I'll... I want gravy- [laughs]... 'cause my name's Davey. Yeah, man, so it was kind of the podcast weekend up there in, uh, northern Michigan, or central Michigan, I guess.
• 11:57
Um, Spinner, on his lo- Western Michigan, one would say more... western, central, north, and western. Western. Western. Lake side. Western. Lake shore. Along the beautiful shores of- Yeah...
• 12:07
Lake Michigan Now, Spinner rode his, uh, long tail Surly Big Fat Dummy...
• 12:13
Big Fat Dummy, and he carried this podcasting, not this exact one, but this, basically a RODECaster Pro, and four of the headset [cough] microphones you're wearing- Nice...
• 12:22
so that we could do a podcast at the picnic table up there in the old campsite, which was- Yeah... quite awesome. It, it's out there in the world. It is. I noticed that again. Yeah, it's on, uh, fatbike.com.
• 12:32
I w- How were you powering said device? With a 100-foot extension cord. [laughs] Nice. And the general thoughts of wellbeing within each of all of us. Yeah, yeah.
• 12:42
So, I'm-- he didn't carry it in vain, and, uh, it led me to, uh, r- remember how much I really wanted another three of those headsets that Tony's wearing right now. [laughs] So they're back there. Nice.
• 12:53
So now- [laughs]... so we can go... I mean, it just...
• 12:56
If you haven't listened to the show yet, and you're looking at what kind of, uh, quality you're gonna get out of a rig like this in a place where it's noisy and Broncos are going around, 'cause it's Bronco weekend with their big block...
• 13:08
or not big block, big motors. I don't think they put big blocks in Broncos. But anyway, um- Too many Bs...
• 13:13
just how much noise was at the campsite and stuff, and you, you, you listen to it and you're like, "Hey, that's pretty good for being out there in the middle of the wilderness," and, uh, just throwing one of these on a table and putting some headset- Hell yeah...
• 13:23
mics on. Yeah. So check that out. It's, uh, it's on fatbike.com. I think it's Spinner's actual first real Burning Bike podcast. Burning Bike. Burning Bike. So, yep.
• 13:34
And then we came back to Muskegon, and we met Mike, JK, that guy. Yes, at the, uh, Marine Tap. That was a good place. Hell yeah. I, I, I kinda forgot about it until I remembered about it, [laughs]
• 13:49
'cause I was g- it was gonna go up where you guys were in the downtown of Muskegon. Right. But then this place is across the street from the ferry. That's true. And- That's convenient. Yeah. Yeah.
• 14:02
So it's like, "Uh, hey, we're down here at the bottom of the hill [laughs] across the street from the ferry." [laughs] And you can, and that- "We can just hang out here until, like, the zero hour."
• 14:11
[laughs] And they had a TouchTunes jukebox too, so- Oh, yes... you could, you could play it to your heart's content- Yes... your own personalized music playlist.
• 14:17
And Tool, Tool is back in the world of streaming, including TouchTunes, so I had to test all avenues. That entire weekend was fueled by Tool. Fueled, fueled by Tool. Just saying.
• 14:30
I am, I'm the over 40 guy that is running going, "Oh my God, oh my God, I have access to everything again." Cool, man. So yeah, it was fun. That sounds like a lot of fun. That was a good time. Yeah. I'm sure you...
• 14:41
Yeah, listen to the, the Burning Bike podcast. You'll hear a whole lot more about the shenana- shana- Shenanigamery... the zons. I don't think we have to really rehash everything that's on that show. Next on the list,
• 14:53
uh, Mr. Jason, we should give him a call. He's the, the feller that's riding across the country on his Schwinn Meridian- Tricycle... tricycle. Huh. So why don't you guys- Yeah... chat a little bit about our beer?
• 15:08
This is what a... What, what did we call it before, the- A preliminary test beer? Te- something that we know before we, we have a beer from- Pa-... from Pigeon Hill at, in- Pa- pace car, pace beer.
• 15:19
Yeah, this is the one just to give you your- Yeah... kinda your taste. It's sa- yeah, yeah. And it is- You're going, you're going around the lap a couple times. And it is once again from Michigan.
• 15:28
That's right, ladies and gentlemen, Founders All Day IPA. This show is brought to you by Michigan. That's- Ish. Ish We better throw in some time for some Riverwest '24 conversation too. Well, of course.
• 15:40
Because, you know. Because I made it- Oh, yeah... one full manifest. We'll, we'll ca- we'll, we'll talk about that. You can talk about it now. Ah, you made one full manifest, huh? Yep. That's pretty good.
• 15:49
I wasn't, I wasn't really reaching for the stars this time. I- I, I was also not reaching for the stars... I was going in between, like, my really lax one [laughs] and my really good one. Yeah.
• 16:03
I- I, I did meet myself in the middle... I did a lot of volunteering. I did a lot of volunteering, and then the sun came out on Saturday, and it got hot. Hot. H- hot, and that switchback- It was hotter than-...
• 16:14
was horrible Well, that's why I always forget. I, I try to go into it just to, like, "Oh, yes," but then I go, "Oh, oh no, this is why I don't do this." [laughs] So yeah, we'll talk to- I will go-...
• 16:27
let's talk to Jason real quick, and then, uh, we'll, we'll talk about the '24 after that. Okay. So we got some stuff to talk about from the '24. We got some... Yeah, we have some issues.
• 16:38
So we are [laughs] using the magic of the interwebs to dial- The dark recesses... right now. I can hear it ringing. Hello. Oh. Hey. Hi. Hi, Jason. It's Sven. How's it going? It's, it's, it's going well.
• 16:54
It's, it's Sven, JK, and, and, uh, Tony here on the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast. Hey, hey, hey. We are- How's it going? [laughs] It's go- we, we are actually on the air right now. It's going really well.
• 17:06
How are you doing? Sweet. [laughs] Well, I am in a small town called Minerva, O- Ohio. Minerva. What, what, uh, what, what's happening in Minerva? Oh, not a whole lot. This is a very small town.
• 17:20
Uh, a McDonald's, a Hardee's, and a Circle K. No Waffle House? No Waffle House. No Waffle House. Dude, come on now. [laughs] Well, you know, [laughs] uh, what, as we say in New Orleans, what had happened was,
• 17:38
uh, I had stopped, I stopped here, uh, on my way, uh, into Pennsylvania, which is only about 30 miles away, [smacks lips] and, uh, you know, did my thing, took a break.
• 17:49
It- the heat of the day is, it, it is 97 degrees out there, and, you know, and the sun's right in my face. So I like to take a break and, uh, grab a picnic table or something. And, uh, the, so I did that.
• 18:01
So about, I don't know, 5:30, 6:00 last night, I decided to head on down the road, and I got about nine miles out of town, and my secondary chain on my tricycle broke. Oh, no. Oh. That's a- Yeah. Um-... that's a bummer
• 18:17
That was a dilly of a pickle, but I called Schwinn this morning, and they're sending me a new one overnight to the hardware store, and they're gonna help me put it back on. I should be on the road tomorrow.
• 18:27
[laughs] Right. Right on. So that's, that's the chain that's actually- Yeah... driving, it's driving the rear axle, right? Right. Yep. Yeah. Exactly. Well, you're not gonna get very far without that.
• 18:37
[laughs] And I don't know... No, no. Uh, but I've been, uh, eh, I, yeah, I don't know if you guys know this or not, but I call my tricycle Heather.
• 18:46
[laughs] Because she has, she, and she's named after a very special person in my life who, uh, biked from New Orleans to Chile- Wow... and back. Wow.
• 18:57
And, and she's kinda my inspira- sh- m- my inspiration that, you know, if this little blonde can, can do that, I can do some state capitals. [laughs] For real, yeah. So how, how many have you hit so far?
• 19:10
Yep, so- State, state capitals... state capitals, I've done four. I'm going on my fifth, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Excellent. Nice. I did, uh, St- St. Paul, Madison, Lansing, and Columbus.
• 19:24
And I've actually slept on the lawn of three of those four capitals. Amen. Was one of 'em in Madison, or did they shoo you off the lawn in Madison? Nope. M- uh, they, they did not. Well, there- Oh...
• 19:36
there i- there really isn't a lawn in Madison. There, um, it, it's a lotta concrete around there, and it's, the lawn is chained off, so I took a catnap on the bench. Right on. On a cement bench, so. [laughs] Yeah.
• 19:50
We got, uh, we- There, there's always a bridge or a bench [laughs] Very good. Right? [laughs] Well, you know, and, and I've, I've... I'll tell you what, um, law enforcement has been so good to me.
• 20:01
I mean, 'cause I'm- [laughs]... I'm sleeping under the stars. I'm, I'm not, you know, I'm not checking in or checking out of any hotels or nothing like that.
• 20:08
I'm kinda roughing it, and I'm doing it, I'm roughing it on purpose. But law enforcement has been so cool, especially, like, when I start showing 'em pictures and, and paraphernalia from other state capitals.
• 20:18
They're like, "Wow, you are on a mission." So I'm like, "Yep, I sure am." [laughs] That's a, that's a good, uh, a good plan. We had a- Yeah...
• 20:25
fella who ta- talked to us about his cross-country touring and how he uses a lot of, uh- Yeah... non-traditional spots. He doesn't usually pay for places to sleep.
• 20:34
And he'll do stuff like dugouts and, and, uh, at baseball fields and, uh, pagodas at- Yeah... parks and stuff like that, and even on occasion, if necessary, a- Pagodas? Gazebos... gazebo. Come on, man. Pagoda.
• 20:50
[laughs] Gazebo. Yep. Pagoda. Gazebo. [laughs] And even on occasion, he uses- Ga- gazebo, pagoda. Yeah. [laughs] If it were China- Yep... I'd be on, yeah. Well- Yeah, yeah. But all right, man.
• 20:59
I've had a couple instances where I've just, uh, thrown down my tarp and my pillow and ca- caught a couple z's underne- under a tree. Yep, yep.
• 21:07
And, uh, m- but m- most recently, uh, I learned the valuable lesson that if you're gonna do that, um, on a bike path, and, like, you just find a little, little, like, cove off of a bike path underneath a tree, make sure you don't have a sandwich in your cooler.
• 21:21
[laughs] Uh-oh. Um, because you'll have, uh, you'll have some, uh, you, you'll have some striped vermin trying to get in there.
• 21:28
[laughs] I woke up and there were three raccoons on top of my, on top of my basket trying to get into my cooler. I had to shoo 'em off. Wow, they can be kinda mean, too. But they were cool. They left. Yeah.
• 21:37
Yeah, they can be mean. Oh, they, no, they, n- I know, um, you know, I grew up in Minnesota, so I know raccoons can be mean, but these guys were nice. They were just like, "Hey, we want your sandwich."
• 21:45
I said, "No, you can't have it. Sorry." [laughs] The, the courteous trash pandas. Yeah. [laughs] So have you had any- Right. E- exactly. The- [laughs] Have you had any other mechanical issues?
• 21:56
I'm, but- It's good to caution. Hey, we're all in this together, guys. We are. [laughs] I, I had a... Well, I, I had a baby deer try to race me, and it won. [laughs] Um, [laughs]
• 22:07
but I'm, I'm going up to, uh, um, upper New York and Vermont and, uh, and New Hampshire. Up there in the mountains I'm gonna have more than raccoons to worry about, so- Yeah... gonna be more careful. [laughs] Yeah.
• 22:19
Have you had any other mechanical issues, or has this thing been running smooth? Um, basically she's been running really smooth.
• 22:26
Um, I don't know if, um, the last podcast you said you played my message, but I did, um, I ran into some severe weather, uh, between Muskegon, Michigan, and, uh, and, um, what's it called? Grand Rapids.
• 22:41
And I was on a bike path, and I found a, a picnic table with a roof over it, which was great, but, um, when I woke up in the morning there were downed trees both ways on the bike path. So I had to carry her over- Oh...
• 22:52
a downed tree, and I trashed the back, the, the, the rear, the drive wheel. I trashed that up pretty good carrying it over a tree, so I had to have that replaced. Wow. And, uh, other than that, no.
• 23:04
I mean, I've, I've had no problems. I've, I popped a tire before I even crossed into Wisconsin, and believe it or not, I've, I, I put a Fix-a-Flat in it- Ta...
• 23:15
and then nursed it over to, uh, nursed it to the next gas station, filled it up with air, and it held all the way to Lake Michigan, all the way to Milwaukee. Wow. Wow.
• 23:25
  [laughs] So- I, I couldn't, I couldn't believe it myself. I was- [laughs] I was like, "Wow." I know. "I can't believe this tire's still going."
• 23:31
Well, yeah, for, for doing a impromptu cyclocross with a trike, I mean- Yeah... wow. Hey, hey, hey. Yep. Hey. [laughs] Yeah. I've, I've r- for, for the most part had no, zero incidents whatsoever.
• 23:43
I mean, a- and I'll tell you what, being on a trike like that, the uneven, uh, un- uneven roads and, and all the bumps, it really, it really knocks the hell out of it, and, but she's been holding together really good.
• 23:55
Right on. So when you were in Milwaukee, you ran into our buddy Puck. Is that correct, Mr. Dave? Yes, it is. Yes. [laughs] Mr. Dave. H- how did that happen? Mr. Dave. He, he- Yeah...
• 24:05
well, um, uh, friends of mine that I, uh, uh, uh, know from New Orleans, um, live in Milwaukee now.
• 24:12
And, uh, I, I was visiting with them, and they, they took me to their, uh, their favorite watering hole, and he was there. And we were, we struck up a conversation.
• 24:22
I showed him a, a bunch of pictures in my, uh, in my captain's logbook that I have, and he was- He was pretty excited about it Yeah, yeah. He's, he turned us on to you- And he, you know, he-... so that's very cool...
• 24:33
yep, he, he's, he's a, he's a great guy who's, um, very, uh- Huh... very, uh- Let, let's not go too far... very awesome personality. [laughs] Let's not go too far. Very funny. I mean, you know, I'm not- Very animated.
• 24:43
No, no... very animated. Animated, yes. Yeah, very animated. And, and- [laughs]... well, and so, so am, so am I after a couple shots of Jagermeister, so. [laughs] Peas in a pod. Yeah, yeah. Yep.
• 24:54
Hey, uh, Jason, do you have the ability to send us a photo of your rig or you on your rig or anything like that, that we can include in the show notes for the show? Oh, ab- absolutely.
• 25:03
I'll um, I can shoot you a couple pictures no problem, uh, on, on Messenger or- Yeah, just however you wanna get them to me, Messenger or just to the, uh, um, you know, whatever works for you.
• 25:15
Yeah, well- You know, text or whatever... you know, what I've been doing is... Yeah, it's, I can, I can definitely do that.
• 25:21
I'll definitely shoot you some pictures, 'cause what I've been doing is I'm, I'm by myself out here, me, me and the bike, so, you know, the touristy pictures, like the tourist attraction pictures, uh, especially in Hell, Michigan, um, I just took a picture- Oh...
• 25:34
of the bike instead of m- myself. Is it- You know? So I got, I've got all sorts of pictures of the bike. Is it Hell, Michigan, or is it Gay Hell, Michigan? 'Cause I know the guy that's the- I don't know. [laughs]...
• 25:44
the blogger bought the town for a week or something and changed the name to Gay Hell, Michigan. He's a, he's a really funny- Huh... guy. You should look him up. He's- I, uh, what?
• 25:52
[laughs] There, there's a Gay- It, it said, it said Hell, Michigan when I was there, so. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe his, maybe his week is up. Maybe. It was off-season for the Gay Hell. Yeah, maybe. He's a hilarious blogger.
• 26:04
[laughs] There's a Gaylord, Michigan. That's a real town, been there for a long time. Yeah, it is. I'm sure. Gaylord, come on, we all know the old-time means.
• 26:14
The b- the best part of that day was, uh, I have a sign that says traveling, you know, blah, blah, blah. And uh, and everybody's like, "Where are you traveling to?" And I said, "Hell." [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Indeed.
• 26:24
All day long. It, it was great. Like, "Where, where are you going?" "Hell." [laughs] Yep. It was awesome. Probably doesn't even get old ever. No. It can be funny for years and years. Right. [laughs] All right, man.
• 26:38
Yeah, it's been, it's been, it's been such an experience. I tell you what, so much fun. You wanna leave us with a thought, and we'll try and catch up with you in a couple weeks when you're down the road a little bit?
• 26:47
Absolutely. Uh, um, just, uh, be nice to people. That's [laughs] that's the bottom line. The one thing that's kept me going is positive mental attitude, and
• 26:59
most people I've ran into have been so nice and so generous and, you know, just, you just keep that, keep that vibe going with yourselves. I think we just come up with a name for today's podcast. Be Nice. Be Nice.
• 27:10
[laughs] Very good, Jason. Well, thanks. Be nice. I mean, it, it takes, it takes so much more energy to be mean. Oh, sure. True that.
• 27:19
Thanks for taking time out of your ride to chat with us, and we'll be doing this again in a couple weeks, and, uh, we'll try and catch up with you. Sounds great, man. Um, look forward to hearing from you.
• 27:29
Hopefully I'll be far away from here by then. Good luck. All right. Safe travels. Thanks. Rubber side down. Bye. All right. All right, guys. Uh, um, I'll send some pictures. Thanks. Thanks. Later. Thanks. All right.
• 27:41
An on the road report from- Oh, sure... from Jason running across the country on his Schwinn Meridian. Hitting some state capitals along the way. Man, that's amazing. Hey, you know what?
• 27:50
Uh, since it's time for another beer- Top of the hill... let's take a- Clang, clang, clang... let's, let's take a quick break here. Everyday Cycles is the go-to place- I'm gonna go to my ears...
• 28:00
for the remaining stock of the Chumba USA Ursa Major titanium fat bike. Lower it down. Contact Greg at everydaycycles.com for more information. You're tuned to the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast.
• 28:19
Hi, I'm here now. Hey, we're all here now again here now. We're back. We're back. We're back. With beer. We're back. With, with another new beer. Um- Top of the hill. Ding. Top of the hill. Where's our bell?
• 28:31
Oh, it's way up there. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Back there. Uh, this is, like, from our trip, so I wanted to have a, a memento for the boys.
• 28:40
I th- I don't know if JK had this when he was over there, but- No, I did not... this is from Muskegon's own Pigeon Hill Brewing Company. Oh, was this next door to the Top Shelf? It's just down the block from Unruly.
• 28:51
There's two, there's two breweries in Muskegon. This is one of the two, and at, they're, like, three blocks apart. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Th- yeah, there was like a- This would be more toward...
• 28:58
This is the on the ferry side- Yes, yes... of Unruly Brewing. Same side of the street, right downtown. It's- Top Shelf was the place that has the pizza. Right. Exactly. Definitely.
• 29:10
So what I, what I like, bes- and I haven't tasted this beer after the all day IPA yet, uh, but what I liked about both of those breweries is 16 ounce pints are $4.50. That's a really good deal.
• 29:21
They're not six or seven or $8 like- Right... some places around here. $8 for a pint? Are you kidding me? That is insane. Yeah, no. Uh, 4.50 is a very, very approachable price for a decent beer.
• 29:34
Now let's see if it's a decent beer. It's steeped in tradition and brewed to perfection. Steeped. There it is. Steeped. In tradition. It is, it is pretty decent. It's a, it's a darn fine IPA. Yes. Yeah. Yes.
• 29:49
It's a seven, 7% alcohol-hoozy. Oh, wow. It's Shifting Sands IPA. That's a, uh, that's a deceptive 7%. Right, and a 70 IBU, which- Yeah. Ooh. India pale ale as classic as 8Bit. Someone that works there is a nerd. Right.
• 30:05
I like it even more. Yeah, it just went up at a couple notches in Tony's esteem. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. What, what about the 24? So we kinda started talking about it before the Jason call.
• 30:16
I know that, uh, Se- Senior Berger did six? Six hours of volunteering? Uh, five during the race and many before and after. Before and after. Yeah, during the actual event. Yeah, but five, I did four hou- uh,
• 30:30
f- no, six, you're right. Four hours of start finish line, and then my bonus checkpoint at the new- You heckled me... River West- You heckled me... Middle School I heckled JK, I heckled everyone.
• 30:42
[laughs] I know, it's- That's like the, it's like the best part of being there, right? You've gotta do that. I know, I know. You know? I just,
• 30:49
I just wanna- I'm gonna- I wanted to make it sound like my feelings were hurt [laughs] Especially what, what time was it? It was like 11:00 to 3:00 or something? Mine was 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
• 30:56
Well, I did- It was hard... I was around the course a bunch and I rarely ran into you. Yep. Kinda caught you at your house a c- once or, you know- Yeah... it's like, oh. Rode with me to the, my second bonus checkpoint.
• 31:07
Right, yep. Which was, everyone loved. We had to, people had to go to a presentation, and then they had to go get school supplies for the new school year for the kids that are, may not be able to afford school supplies.
• 31:20
Were the school supplies in the school, or did they- Oh, no... have to go outside of the school and grab? You had to go find a- Oh, was that over at, uh, by, uh, Brevin? No, it was, uh, Frattini School, which is- Right.
• 31:31
Oh... the old Pierce Elementary. So where, where did they go to get the school supplies, do you think? Um, a lot of people went to Sunrise, and Sunrise sold out. [laughs] So then they went to Dollar General.
• 31:40
Some went, um, some went to Walgreens. [laughs] Wow, that's a cruise. They booked all the way over to Walgreens.
• 31:47
One lady, two, two ladies, many people were educators, but two ladies did the presentation, then came out and said- Like, "Hey, I have a-" "Can we take-" "... I have a pencil." [laughs] Two people did that.
• 31:56
[laughs] Two people caught wind- That's awesome. Yeah... two people caught wind of the bonus checkpoint and got their pens and markers before they showed up. Okay. Those, they booked right through. Wow.
• 32:07
Um, but yes, uh, my boss at, uh, The Digital Bridge, Jeff, had a head-on collision with a guy on the switchback because Jeff rides a unicycle, a 36-inch Coker unicycle, and he's 6'4",
• 32:19
so on top of his unicycle, he's about 8 1/2 feet tall and no one could see his light. Wow. Uh, so that was another fun River West 24. I almost missed my tattoo this year, which would've been absolutely tragic.
• 32:30
Would've been the first one you'd missed. It would've been the... I would've gotten it somewhere else, but yes, it would've been- Yes, under duress- Yes, I-... but it would've been a- You know, so.
• 32:38
You'd have to- Thanks to Donna's dog... you, you would have, you would have the tattoo, but an asterisk- Maybe... tattooed next to it and going like, "Technically, mm."
• 32:47
Yeah, that Dave should have a bunch of asterisks next to- Yeah... on his.
• 32:51
So during the 24, I popped in the s- in the shop several times during the night and the following morning and just checked in and said, "Hey, this is what's going on. It's pretty fun out there." Hell yeah.
• 33:01
And, um, I caught up with JK. I'm going to m- actually make that a s- a separate whole podcast just 'cause it's all River West 24 centric, and it's, um, probably, eh, a little over a half an hour of- Nice...
• 33:12
kind of check-ins and observations and, and what was happening and the- A lot of blathering. Yeah, and some blathering. It was, yeah, yeah. We, we, we actually blathered twice because I- Yeah...
• 33:21
forgot to push the button the first time. [laughs] You forgot to hit the end record, brother. [laughs] What about, uh... I, I'm already thinking about next year's River West 24, but what about a 24 on bike podcast?
• 33:34
Maybe. I was trying to- Interviewing people as we go... yeah, because I was thinking as a checkpoint, it, I don't think it would work that well. It's, it- No...
• 33:39
it takes too long, and there's too much prep work to get people in, and talking, and doing stuff, and you can only do three at a time. We could do a roving checkpoint. A roving, roving checkpoint for extra credit.
• 33:51
Mm-hmm. Bonus points. Yeah. But I wouldn't think about it. That's what happens on the bike. Humpf. Could throw the rig on the long tail. Yes, we certainly could. Maybe. This could be a lot of fun.
• 34:01
These are, these are ideas that need to be explored more. The cogs are in motion. The cogs are in motion. Yes. Like, like this year, it wasn't just the River West 24, it was the River West 28, 29.
• 34:15
Yeah, we- 'Cause had to go-... definitely extended it... had, had to go over to Brady Street 'cause the band I needed to see started at 7:00, so I didn't see the ending ceremonies. Oh, well. What was it?
• 34:26
White, White what? White Mystery. They were good. And they're yeah, yeah. I went over there with JK. And then, uh- They were cool... Abby, uh, Amanda Huff was after that, but I missed that part.
• 34:35
But we were over at- Thurmond's... Thurmond's for Chester James. You guys did a lot of riding. And well, I couldn't sit down. If I sit down, boom. You're done. I'm done for, man. Fall asleep. Yeah.
• 34:44
We were thinking about just- I was just like, "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah"... next year maybe extending it another 24 hours, maybe on our own. No, 20... No, that's why it was- The River West 48, man, come on...
• 34:52
it was like the six, the six. At least six hours more. Yeah, I got home after 1:00 that night. It was, it was late. [laughs] Yeah. That happens. But it was fun. I, uh, was in- James always ended up being the place...
• 35:02
I was asleep by 9:00 PM. Uh- And I slept until 9:00 PM the following morning. 9:00 PM the following morning? Or 9:00 AM, excuse me, and then went for my tradition. [laughs] I, no, I- I went-... uh, either would impress.
• 35:14
I, I, I understand that. I'm shouting out to, uh- I do... shouting out to Mikey at Dino's too because my tradition continued. Even though it wasn't on the menu, he made me chicken and waffles. Aw. Love you, Mikey.
• 35:25
All right, Mikey. Aw. What a sweetheart. Do either of you, uh, get the Bicycling email, like from Bicycling Magazine or bicycling.com? Probably not. Uh, I get the Facebook updates. Ah.
• 35:37
I just, there was a thing this morning that was like the death of the front derailleur. Hm. Because Competitive Cyclist is selling some SRAM X9, which was a pretty decent derailleur in its day, for, you know, $5.30. Wow.
• 35:52
90% off its original price. Wow. And that is a really nice derailleur. [laughs] So in just, in just what? Two or three short years, the front derailleur has gone from necessary to- Absolutely... nada. Pretty much.
• 36:03
Well, that's what kinda screwed me up on last Nonsense. There was a little bendy that locked in and made it un-rideable. Oh, right, right, right. Oh, getting your fat bike that night, right? Yeah. Yeah.
• 36:19
It was like, it was like, it was just locked. Oh, I- So you're getting your fat bike rebuilt. Did it have- Is it going to have one of those? Yeah, it had a clutch. And I was just like- Yeah, so it has a lock on it...
• 36:28
well, I mean, it was, it was on the same night of, uh, fat, uh, Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee, and, um, this was during and then after- Tour de Forest... Tour de Forest.
• 36:40
So mid Tour de Forest, that's when that happened, and then I just coasted it all the way home Probably ought to learn you how to use that thing. Uh, well, yes. Learn those things. But-
• 36:55
So we've talked about going weekly with this show. Who out there in radio land wants to hear us every [laughs] week? Uh, be that as it may, I think we're gonna do it anyway, whether they want us or not.
• 37:05
Yeah, well, at least try it, and- Yeah... if people complain, well, most people are assholes. So we could- Yeah... we could either start weekly on the 28th or September 4th. You wanna go after Labor Day? [burps] Yeah.
• 37:16
Yeah. Sounds right. Yeah, let's get through summer. We got another month of summer, and then we're done with- Yeah... then we're done with summer. Yeah. You wanna get... Yeah, don't give me obligations yet. Right.
• 37:24
Dude, who do you think- Hey, during the school year, it's easy to- How many- who do, who, who do you think you are? It's easy to be obligated during the school year. Ugh. Yeah. Yeah, man. Then I can- All right.
• 37:31
September 4th, we're gonna, we're gonna be starting weekly, folks. Weekly podcast. Hopefully I'll have my Sendero built by then.
• 37:38
More hopefully, I hope I have it, have it built by Saturday, but [laughs] You, I was gonna say, you hope to have it built by September? [laughs] I figured you were camping here tonight to finish it.
• 37:45
[laughs] No, I gotta wait for the fork, 'cause I, I was hemming and hawing. I, you know, I can't believe that a, a top, well, a top of the line, you know, Fox shock is $1,000 fork now. Mm-hmm. Isn't that crazy? Mm.
• 37:57
But it's such a nice frame, I couldn't just throw something [laughs] subpar on it.
• 38:00
I was like, this weekend I was talking to people about it, and I'm like, "Well, I could kinda go with something, you know, blah, blah, blah, and kinda work up to the..."
• 38:08
No, no, no, put the, put the best on there right away. And you know what? So you- Like, like Gomez always says about Gomez, I say about me, nothing's too good for Sven. [laughs] Are you putting a Rohloff on it? Negatory.
• 38:22
Oh. By the by- No, the roll, the, the Rohloff will go on the, on the fat bike... by the way, by the by, oh, that was, that was a... That was fun. It does look like a pretty bike. Oh, it, it was, it was fun to ride.
• 38:32
JK borrowed a Rohloff fat bike- Mm... 'cause his is in the garage- Yeah, and it-... getting a fresh coat of paint upon it. Oh, it was, it was- Yeah. You don't wanna ride those, dude. They, they, they hook you in...
• 38:41
it was delight- it was delightful. It's like- And I, I, I know, and I, I'm just like- It's like riding a Selle Anatomic seat. Once you start riding, you're like, "Oh." Oh. You would, you would've liked that.
• 38:48
And by the way, no. Whatever... That one is trained to damn Sven's ass. It was- It was- My, my favorite that they don't make anymore. And you're, yeah. My, my WTB Valcon, baby. Oh, Lord.
• 38:59
Dude, I don't know how many layers of hell I can tell you that I was dealing with on that one. Selle Anatomic. [blows raspberry] Yeah. Notice what's on my fat bike for that long weekend? Yeah. Yeah, whatever.
• 39:10
Selle Anatomic. Whatever. But it was not trained to my- It is, it is the nicest seat-... ass groove... in the world. Yeah. It really is. If it's trained to your ass groove. Boom. But it's not trained to my ass groove.
• 39:19
Oh, that's- Well, that's, you know. Yeah, no. [laughs] The seat's heavy. Oh, that seat's heavy. Oh. Oh, we're talking about that puppy right there now. How can I be comfortable? Yeah.
• 39:25
That, that's your hammock for y- That is... that's the hammock for your butt. I call it my hammock for my ball sack. [laughs] Yeah. That's what I've always called it. [laughs] I- And I love that seat...
• 39:33
it was, it was great. You know, I think the mistake I made on our trip was wearing actual cycling shorts. It- It's so comfortable you can go without padded ass.
• 39:40
So, so let's say for example coming up there's gonna be an underpants ride. What seat might you potentially wear if the only thing you're gonna have between you and the seat is a thin pair of underpants? Assless chaps.
• 39:54
So maybe the Anatomica without the slot. [laughs] Oh. Yeah, that, that could trap things. Chaps are assless. Yep. I'm not gonna get my- Yeah. Oh, man. [laughs] All right.
• 40:05
Well, there's a lot in this show tonight, so, uh- Yes, there is. We talked about a lot... so if we don't talk, uh, again, the underwear ride does have a Daikaiju meetup. July- No, I think we're actually-... 22nd.
• 40:15
Or August 22nd. Oh, that's a Thursday, isn't it? It's a Thursday. Yep, yep, yep. Yeah. We're gonna have a show the 21st, so. Just saying. Will be the night before.
• 40:22
So Daikaiju, folks, down there at the, uh, what is it called? X-Ray Arcade. X-Ray Arcade in Cudahy. Cudahy-hy-hy. Oh, man. It smells like bacon down there. Oh my gosh. You gotta kiss her where it stinks. Daikaiju.
• 40:33
Cudahy. Go. Yes. Attack. It's going to be fantastic. All right, everybody. Hit the button. Thank you for listening. I'm gonna push a button now. Hitting the button. Button. I'm pushing that button. There it is.
• 40:45
Ride the slider. Where's that button push? Ride the slide. Get the pod up there. Ride the slide, baby. Get the pod up there. There it goes. Do it! And buh-bye. Hit the button!
• 40:55
  [upbeat rock music]
