- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith and we are going
- 0:03to go into the month of June. And in this month,
- 0:06we're going to be talking about wisdom. And so
- 0:08wisdom is going to be our theme. And so we're
- 0:11going to be in Proverbs this month. And so welcome
- 0:13to June. And this month, we're going to slow
- 0:15down and seek God's wisdom and learn how to walk
- 0:18in discernment, maturity, and clarity. Proverbs
- 0:22is full of practical tips and truth that helps
- 0:25us make better decisions, guard our hearts, and
- 0:29say on the path, that God has made. And so our
- 0:32anchor verse this month is Proverbs 4 -7, wisdom
- 0:35is supreme, therefore get wisdom. And so in this
- 0:39episode, we're gonna be walking in godly wisdom.
- 0:42And if there's one thing every person is desperate
- 0:44for right now, whether we realize it or not,
- 0:47is wisdom. And so we can take a picture and note
- 0:51from the wisest person in scripture, and it was
- 0:55Solomon. And so he had asked for wisdom. We may
- 0:59have a lot of information, but do we have wisdom?
- 1:04We have more information now than any generation
- 1:07in history, and by less wisdom than ever before.
- 1:13And we have endless options, but very little
- 1:16discernment. We have non -stop noise, but not
- 1:19enough stillness. And we have access to every
- 1:22voice. but yet we're starving for the right voice.
- 1:26And God knew this. This is why He gave us the
- 1:28book of Proverbs, a manual for living, a compass
- 1:31for chaos, a compass for choices, a flashlight
- 1:35for confusing seasons, and guardrails for foolish
- 1:38paths. Wisdom is an intelligence. Wisdom is an
- 1:42age. Wisdom is an experience. Wisdom isn't a
- 1:45personality. Wisdom is the ability to live life
- 1:48the way that God designed it. And the good news?
- 1:53Anyone can have it. Anyone can grow in it. Anyone
- 1:56can walk in it. Anyone can ask God for it. And
- 2:00if God gives generously as James 1 -5 says, this
- 2:03episode is about showing us and listeners that
- 2:08wisdom isn't complicated. It's intentional. You
- 2:11have to actually seek to be wise. And so in this
- 2:15episode, the foundation of all wisdom is fear
- 2:18of the Lord. Proverbs 9 -10 says the fear of
- 2:20the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This means
- 2:24that wisdom begins with awe, reverence, respect,
- 2:27surrender, trust, and obedience. The fear of
- 2:30God isn't terror like you're scared. It's alignment.
- 2:34It's saying, God, your way is right. Your perspective
- 2:39is true. Your word is final. Your voices lead
- 2:43me. Your boundaries protect me. And your wisdom
- 2:47is better than my instincts. Wisdom begins the
- 2:52moment self -stop leading and God starts leading.
- 2:56And so why do we need this? Why do we need wisdom?
- 3:00Why do we need wisdom more than ever? The world
- 3:03is so loud and temptations are very subtle. Choices
- 3:07are complicated. Relationships are messy. Emotions
- 3:11fluctuate and culture shifts constantly and pressure
- 3:15is everywhere. Without godly wisdom, people don't
- 3:20just drift. They drift into different things.
- 3:24Unnecessary pain, regret, toxic relationships,
- 3:29repeated cycles, poor decisions, hidden habits,
- 3:34spiritual confusion, emotional instability, and
- 3:38wasted years. Wisdom doesn't eliminate the storms,
- 3:42but it helps you navigate through them. Wisdom
- 3:44doesn't prevent all pain. It prevents a lot of
- 3:47unnecessary pain. Wisdom doesn't make life perfect.
- 3:52It makes it fruitful. And the Book of Proverbs
- 3:54is a treasure's chest that holds a ton of wisdom.
- 3:59Here's just a couple topics that Proverbs actually
- 4:02goes through. If you've never read it, I encourage
- 4:05you to read one Proverbs a day. There are 31
- 4:09chapters. Most months have 31 days. And so the
- 4:13book talks about Friendships and finances and
- 4:15marriage and anger control, discipline, purity,
- 4:19speech, work ethic, boundaries, planning, conflict,
- 4:21pride, humility, leadership, character, and reputation.
- 4:28Proverbs is a father or mother saying to their
- 4:32kid, listen, don't learn everything the hard
- 4:37way. And how many parents that are listening
- 4:40or kids that are listening, you may have heard,
- 4:42I've already did this. I have told you a hundred
- 4:44times. Learn from my mistakes. Listen. Don't
- 4:48learn the hard way that I did. I've already been
- 4:50down that road and that's why God gave you me.
- 4:53And so you could have an easier way of doing
- 4:55this. I've already done it. Please just listen
- 4:58to me. And if you youth are listening. then please
- 5:05let us help you spare yourselves from the heartache
- 5:09that we've already went through. God let us go
- 5:12through hardships to be able to teach you guys
- 5:14and I'm pretty sure in Proverbs it says that
- 5:17we need to be listening to people that have white
- 5:19hair and Thank goodness for my hairdresser because
- 5:23if I didn't have her, my hair would be white.
- 5:26And so we went through so many trials and tribulations
- 5:28and walked out of God's will and ended up in
- 5:31such a mess. And so we are here with testimony
- 5:34after testimony. And so please, if you're listening
- 5:37to this and you have someone wise and discerning
- 5:39in your life, listen to them. They've went through
- 5:41trials. They went through troubles. People in
- 5:43their 40s or 50s or 60s or 80s or 90s. I love
- 5:46talking to my older generations, 80s and 90s,
- 5:49about the wisdom that they've gained and just
- 5:51to just bask in their wisdom because God has
- 5:54taken them through so many storms, through many
- 5:57marriages and just relationships and what to
- 6:00do and what not to do. And it's just so incredible
- 6:03to learn. from their past mistakes, and so I
- 6:06don't have to repeat it. And so if you can, just
- 6:10lean into people that have been through different
- 6:13seasons before you've walked through it. And
- 6:15so I think that there's four paths of life that
- 6:18Proverbs warrants us about. Number one, the way
- 6:21of the wise. And so this path is marked by humility,
- 6:25teachability, obedience, character, listening,
- 6:30discipline. and integrity. Proverbs 3, 13 says,
- 6:34Bless is the one who finds wisdom. Wisdom leads
- 6:37to peace, favor, clarity, instability. I tell
- 6:43my kids all the time that we need to make sure
- 6:45that the only pie that I recommend is humble
- 6:47pie. And so it teaches us about having humility,
- 6:50about being humble. In our church, one of our
- 6:54core ingredients is to be teachable. It is having
- 6:59a teachable heart makes us obedient and that
- 7:01becomes part of your character because you're
- 7:03listening to God and the discipline that he gives
- 7:06us to be and to go into scripture to be able
- 7:09to get the wisdom and Whenever you do this your
- 7:13integrity changes you become an integrist person
- 7:16You are the same that you are on Sunday morning
- 7:18that you are Monday in the office that you are
- 7:20Saturday whenever you're with your friends These
- 7:23things will change you as you seek his face,
- 7:25as you seek his wisdom and guidance. These things
- 7:28change. And so it's so great to see people have
- 7:31a transformation because it's about the fruit.
- 7:34And so yes, you are a tree. Yes, we are connected
- 7:36for the divine, but we have to grow our fruit.
- 7:40And then number two, the way of the foolish.
- 7:43This person, where I've been, ignores godly advice,
- 7:48acts impulsively, rejects correction. Follows
- 7:52emotion and then repeats mistakes. I've done
- 7:55every one of them multiple times Proverbs 14
- 7:5812 said there is a way that seems right But the
- 8:01end is death and so how many times have we ignored
- 8:05godly advice? How many times have we felt the
- 8:07Holy Spirit nudges and we're like, ah, that doesn't
- 8:09sound like a great idea That sounds like a super
- 8:11big inconvenience. I'm not doing it Or we act
- 8:14irrationally. We act on emotion. We act whenever
- 8:16we get angry or mad or we see something and we
- 8:19don't go to God first. We just act because we
- 8:20know that we can take care of it. I'll just do
- 8:22it and get it over with. And then whenever we
- 8:25have somebody that tries to correct us with love
- 8:28and grace and they do it in a correct way but
- 8:30we get super offensive and we let pride in or
- 8:33no. I'm not gonna be corrected. No. We reject
- 8:37correction. Like I said before we follow emotions
- 8:40we do things out of anger and embarrassment and
- 8:43we follow the emotion that we have and we act
- 8:45impulsively and thank God that he is Graceful
- 8:50and merciful because we repeat mistakes over
- 8:53and over again, but he doesn't strike us down
- 8:55whenever we get things wrong He lets us repeat
- 8:58the mistake and so we learn and I don't know
- 9:00about you But I tend to be a slow learner and
- 9:03so I have to repeat the testing and the trials
- 9:05so many times and he says, get up again, get
- 9:08up again, let's do it again. Let's do it over.
- 9:10Let's do it over. Let's do it over. I'm like,
- 9:12and then I finally get it. And so foolishness
- 9:15feels right in the moment, but it will crush
- 9:18you later. And three, the way of the lazy, of
- 9:23the sluggard. It says sluggard a lot in scripture
- 9:25and that's what it means. It's just being lazy.
- 9:28And this isn't about nabs. It's about avoidance.
- 9:31This person procrastinates. avoids responsibility,
- 9:35wants rewards without working for it, has big
- 9:38talk but small effort, and doesn't follow through.
- 9:43And Proverbs 3 .14 says the soul of the sluggard
- 9:45craves and gets nothing. Laziness steals destiny.
- 9:51And so for the person that maybe you're a procrastinator,
- 9:54maybe you're the person that puts things off
- 9:57way into you work in the last minute. Oh, I work
- 9:59great under pressure and you do it that way.
- 10:01You're avoiding responsibility. You were given
- 10:03a task and then we do it because it pleases the
- 10:07Lord for us to be in the position that we're
- 10:09in to have the responsibilities that's been given
- 10:11to us. And people want all the reward. They want
- 10:14all the likes. They want all the followers. They
- 10:16want this huge platform. But they don't want
- 10:18to work for it. They don't want to put the time
- 10:20in. Just time and time again. Kids say that they
- 10:23want to be and have arms and they want to have
- 10:26biceps and they want to have abs and they want
- 10:28to do all this other stuff and they're gonna
- 10:29get healthy and they're gonna do all this other
- 10:31stuff. And adults say the same thing. And it's
- 10:33just, okay, so let's get a diet plan. Let's get
- 10:35you a clean eating habit. Let's get you into
- 10:37the gym. Let's, here's, no. I'm not going to
- 10:40do any of that. I just want those things. And
- 10:42so they want the reward of working out. They
- 10:44want the reward of consistently showing up in
- 10:46the gym. They want the reward of eating healthy.
- 10:49They want the reward. They want this amazing
- 10:51relationship with God, but they won't even give
- 10:53him 10 minutes or the gym 10 minutes and they
- 10:55won't put 10 days into a diet. And they expect
- 10:58their world to change and it does not work like
- 11:00that. And then they want something. They want
- 11:03this huge thing. But then they don't want to
- 11:06go for it. And we just give you, they give small
- 11:09effort. And so I want to change the world, but
- 11:12I don't want to get off the couch. Now, with
- 11:15social media and the ability to post and do,
- 11:17that's still effort. And so getting on there
- 11:19and making a TikTok, getting on here and making
- 11:21a podcast, getting on there and being consistent
- 11:23and wanting to do big things, because God has
- 11:26put big things on your heart, you have to have
- 11:29big effort. You can't have small effort. And
- 11:31you're not going to see any millionaire, billionaire,
- 11:34or anybody that's making a difference putting
- 11:36small effort into something that is huge. And
- 11:39people don't follow through. And you have to
- 11:43follow through if you want to see things. And
- 11:45that is just... You have to follow through. If
- 11:49you say that you're going to do something, then
- 11:50do it. And then I am... really if you sign up
- 11:54for something and that's another big thing too
- 11:56is that if you sign up for 5 ,000 things then
- 11:59you have to sign up for 5 ,000 things and so
- 12:00be very selective because if you don't follow
- 12:03through with it then don't sign up you're taking
- 12:05a position from somebody and Gia has learned
- 12:07this the hard way and so she wants to sign up
- 12:09for all these sports but then it's fun and friends
- 12:11and beautiful days outside but she has practice.
- 12:15I don't want to go mom. It's not mandatory. I
- 12:17don't want to go. You signed up for it. You knew
- 12:19the responsibilities going into it and so therefore
- 12:22you signed up for it and so therefore you will
- 12:24go. Next time you know what it takes to be a
- 12:27travel volleyball player. You know what it takes
- 12:29to be a three sportsman student. You have to
- 12:32get good grades. You have to do the follow through.
- 12:34You have to go to practice whenever all your
- 12:36friends are doing whatever they want to do on
- 12:39beautiful days, but you signed up and so therefore
- 12:41you have to follow through with your original
- 12:43commitment. going to do it. And so you have to
- 12:47follow through with what you say that you're
- 12:48going to do. And that also brings you into that
- 12:50first category of integrity. If you say that
- 12:52you're going to do something, then do it. Bottom
- 12:54line, if you say that you're going to do it,
- 12:56then do it. If you don't want to or you know
- 12:58that you're a person that does not have that
- 13:00strength yet, then don't sign up for all the
- 13:03things. And that's my soapbox and I'll get off
- 13:07of it. Four, the way of the wicked. This is intentional
- 13:11rebellion. This person resists God, loves sin,
- 13:16harms others, and refuses conviction. Proverbs
- 13:21is clear. That path will lead to destruction.
- 13:25And so in class, I often talk about two highways.
- 13:28And so one is real narrow and that's what he
- 13:30says in scripture is that there's a road that
- 13:32leads and that's very narrow and there's guardrails
- 13:35and there are certain things that we do and do
- 13:36not do and it all leads To glory of God in heaven
- 13:41and there's another way that is the highway to
- 13:44hell and it's real wide and glamorous and we
- 13:47get and you get to do whatever you want to do
- 13:49and have no care in the world and you get to
- 13:51Refuse that kind of urge and that conviction
- 13:53you're out here hurting people and you don't
- 13:56care and you love your sinful nature because
- 13:59we all do but we have to die to those fleshly
- 14:01desires and we're resisting God we know potentially
- 14:03what scripture says or you had someone in your
- 14:06life that says this is not how God wants us to
- 14:09live and we're living in a sinful, obvious sinful
- 14:11life because we are all sinners. We are saints,
- 14:14those that follow Christ. We are saints that
- 14:16choose to sin. And so we are out here just loving
- 14:19our best life and living our truth and all this
- 14:21other funny business. And that way leads to wickedness.
- 14:26And so here are some tangible habits, some wisdom
- 14:31that are built in through six daily habits that
- 14:34I feel could really help change. how you look
- 14:38and build on your fruit. And so in your workbook,
- 14:43it is one, read God's word daily. Proverbs 6
- 14:47-2 says, the Lord gives wisdom. No word equals
- 14:52no wisdom. The Bible is your compass, not culture.
- 14:57Two, choose your friends wisely. Proverbs 13
- 15:00-20 says, walk with wise and become wise. Who
- 15:04you walk with affects who you become. and wisdom
- 15:07grows in healthy company. And so we've said this
- 15:10time and time again on this podcast, who you
- 15:12are is directly affected by who you're hanging
- 15:16out with. Pick your friends wisely. And I think
- 15:20it said people are like the five people that
- 15:22you hang out with is the direction that you're
- 15:24going. So are your friends going in the direction
- 15:25that you want to go in? If they're not, I would
- 15:27probably pick different friends. Listen three,
- 15:31listen before you speak. Proverb 1727 says wise
- 15:34people are slow to speak. Your tongue can build
- 15:40or break you. Wisdom pauses before reaction.
- 15:45And so that is a huge lesson that I'm learning
- 15:48every day. And so I'm very quick to, I was very
- 15:51quick to anger. Now do I still get angry? Absolutely.
- 15:53Do I, that I used to send emails? Yes, absolutely.
- 15:56Did I have to have a sticky note on my computer
- 15:58that says do not send email? Yes, and so your
- 16:01tongue literally can bring life or death into
- 16:03people and so listen before you speak I think
- 16:07there's a book or I think Simon Sinek said something
- 16:11about leaders eat last or something like that
- 16:14and so we just listen just listen and Then whenever
- 16:18you have a reaction count to ten take a deep
- 16:21breath in and blow it out and then ask God for
- 16:23guidance Which leads to four seek counsel? Proverbs
- 16:2711, 14 says, victory comes from many counselors.
- 16:32And so wise people ask questions. Absolutely.
- 16:35Fools pretend that they know everything. Why?
- 16:39You cannot know everything. Please do not think
- 16:41that you do. Wise people ask questions. And so
- 16:44many times I get the question, why do you ask
- 16:47so many questions? Why do you ask so many questions?
- 16:50And context is so important. Context is so important.
- 16:53And so what do I do for a living? I have to help
- 16:55people. And so I have to ask the same question
- 16:58in five different directions to get where we
- 17:00need to go. And so asking questions, ask questions
- 17:03after questions, there really is no silly question
- 17:05and there is no stupid question. And so if you
- 17:08don't know, you got to ask. And so you ask people.
- 17:11Theology by itself is very dangerous. And so
- 17:14you seek counsel, seek someone that's wiser than
- 17:16you, seek someone that's in this faith longer
- 17:18than you have, seek your pastor or a friend or
- 17:21a mom or a grandma that knows Christ. And they
- 17:26should lead you in that opposite way of what
- 17:29you're trying to go for. And lead you in the
- 17:32path of Jesus. And five, practice self -control.
- 17:37In Proverbs 25 -28, it says, And so self -control,
- 17:47as we remember from earlier episodes, the fruit
- 17:49of the Spirit. And so as we ended last year with
- 17:52all the fruits of the Spirit, go back and listen
- 17:53to that if you have not. And so we have self
- 17:56-control. And so that's one of the fruits of
- 17:58the Spirit. And so you have to practice what
- 18:00God has put already inside of you. And so whenever
- 18:03I have a sign up in my office, it says we do
- 18:05what is right, not what is easy. And so choosing
- 18:08the best may be an inconvenience for you. But
- 18:11if God has put something on your heart, then
- 18:12we do it, because that is the best to our ability.
- 18:15We don't do what's easy, because it would be
- 18:18easy just to do things just halfway. No, we do
- 18:21them at 100 percent. Six, stay humble. Proverbs
- 18:2516, 18 says, Pride comes before destruction.
- 18:29Humility keeps us teachable and pride binds you
- 18:32to danger. And so pride was the first sin. That's
- 18:37what got Lucifer kicked out of heaven. And so
- 18:40as we stay humble, pride can't attach to that.
- 18:44And so we eat our humble pie. Again, that is
- 18:47the only pie that I'm going to recommend. And
- 18:50whenever I was growing up, a little side note,
- 18:51fun note, I had that for my birthday. I used
- 18:53to eat raisin pie and it was... So good. But
- 18:57we have a different relationship with food, and
- 18:58that's a lot of sugar. And so eat your humble
- 19:01pie. And so wisdom is a decision before it's
- 19:04a feeling. Some people wait for wisdom to hit
- 19:07them. But wisdom is chosen long before it's felt.
- 19:10Walking in wisdom looks like slowing down before
- 19:13rushing, praying before reacting, thinking long
- 19:16term and not short term, asking God for direction,
- 19:20saying no to things that derail you, guarding
- 19:23your heart. choosing godly influences, filtering
- 19:26voices, evaluating consequences. Wisdom is intentional
- 19:31and not accidental. The enemy fears a wise Christian
- 19:35because a wise believer is hard to deceive, hard
- 19:39to distract, hard to manipulate, hard to tempt,
- 19:42hard to break, hard to divide, and hard to intimidate.
- 19:46Wisdom exposes the traps before you step into
- 19:50them. And when believers walk in wisdom, The
- 19:54enemy loses its leverage. And so we hope that
- 19:57you guys are looking into the workbooks that
- 20:00we have made in there on the Fostering Faith
- 20:01Media website. And so the reflection question
- 20:04for this week is where do I need more godly wisdom
- 20:06in my life right now? Maybe it's a relationship,
- 20:10a decision, school, leadership, your habits,
- 20:13your finances, your emotions, your boundaries,
- 20:15your priorities, what it is. Sit with the Holy
- 20:19Spirit and He will illuminate these directions.
- 20:23in your life. And what is one practical step
- 20:26that you'll take this week? To walk in wisdom.
- 20:29Maybe it's going to be read that one chapter
- 20:30in Proverbs daily. Pause before you respond.
- 20:34Talk to a mentor. Eliminate foolish influences.
- 20:38Create boundaries. Pray over decisions before
- 20:41you act. And replace one habit with a healthier
- 20:44one. Wisdom grows with practice. And so we hope
- 20:48that this message encouraged you. We hope that
- 20:50this message allow you to just be So excited
