- 0:00Speaker 1: Jack Jack, Are you okay? What was that? Pedro? It's
- 0:03Speaker 1: one more thing. I'm strong and Getty one more thing.
- 0:08Speaker 2: That was like a Eddie Murphy movie where he was
- 0:11Speaker 2: playing four parts.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Before I get to that story that I told my
- 0:16Speaker 1: kids the other night, and I thought i'd tell on
- 0:17Speaker 1: the radio. I was just remarking, I was watching one
- 0:20Speaker 1: of the NFL games last weekend, and they kept showing
- 0:23Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator in the booth with like five other
- 0:26Speaker 1: guys and six TV monitors and headsets on, and how
- 0:29Speaker 1: they come up with the play through the computer algorithms
- 0:33Speaker 1: and then get it to the off the coach and
- 0:35Speaker 1: then he gets it to the quarterback and his head set. Yeah,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and thinking about how when I was a kid, Terry
- 0:42Speaker 1: Bradshaw won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, calling
- 0:45Speaker 1: plays in the huddle on his own completely like he's
- 0:48Speaker 1: completely calling his own plays. Now, I realized that's forty
- 0:52Speaker 1: five years ago. But man, it's just it's a completely
- 0:55Speaker 1: different sport than that.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Oh yeah, with the you know, enormous audiences on TV
- 1:03Speaker 2: and in person and exorbitant ticket prices and they're just
- 1:06Speaker 2: raking in money. And I was also thinking that whole
- 1:09Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. You're up there in the booth and you
- 1:12Speaker 2: and like ten other people and stuff looking at computer
- 1:14Speaker 2: monitors and wearing headsets and wearing khaki pants and hard
- 1:18Speaker 2: shoes or whatever. Do you feel like you're part of
- 1:20Speaker 2: a sports team or is it more or less the
- 1:22Speaker 2: same feeling as if you worked at a I don't know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: for an insurance company and you're crunching the latest numbers
- 1:28Speaker 2: and you decided to do this. I just, oh, no,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I think it's a sports teamy, just because the pace
- 1:35Speaker 2: You've got seconds to make that decision, get it down
- 1:37Speaker 2: to the field, and then you see the fruits of
- 1:40Speaker 2: your latest decision immediately and adjust from there. It's super intense.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Well I'm sure it's intense, but you're not on the
- 1:46Speaker 1: sideline with the players. I don't know. I just think
- 1:47Speaker 1: it would be a different thing than I don't know.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And they all assume get super Bowl rings when they win.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, yeah. The secretaries in the front
- 1:58Speaker 2: office get ranked.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Anyway, so the whole jack jack Are you all right?
- 2:05Speaker 1: What was that? Pedro? So I'm reading Old Yeller. My
- 2:09Speaker 1: son and I are reading it together, really good book.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm not sure if I ever read it.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So Old Yeller is a decent description for a middle
- 2:17Speaker 2: aged talk show host. It occurs to me, no.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Trouble liberals a couple of old Yellers. Anyway, in one
- 2:28Speaker 1: chapter of Old Yeller, the main character there who ends
- 2:32Speaker 1: up shooting Old Yeller gets stampeded by cattle. And I
- 2:37Speaker 1: mentioned to my son that that happened to me one
- 2:38Speaker 1: time before, and he was quite shocked by that. And
- 2:41Speaker 1: I know I've told this story before, but not for many,
- 2:43Speaker 1: many years. And it's got a legal immigration twist to it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I worked with a lot of not a lot of
- 2:51Speaker 1: a handful of illegal immigrants when I worked in feed
- 2:53Speaker 1: lots when I was in high school. Gladys, can you
- 2:55Speaker 1: play that? Yeah, this is going back to my high school.
- 2:58Speaker 1: At that time, it was still mostly local high school
- 3:03Speaker 1: kids that worked these jobs with a handful of illegal immigrants.
- 3:06Speaker 1: From what I understand, since then, it's all immigrants, illegal
- 3:11Speaker 1: or not, and it's not a job you could get
- 3:13Speaker 1: as a high school kid. Anyway, I'm working there at
- 3:18Speaker 1: the feed lot and it was one guy I worked with,
- 3:20Speaker 1: the Pedro, super good dude, really hard worker. I loved
- 3:23Speaker 1: working with him. Whenever I got teamed up with him,
- 3:25Speaker 1: like if we were bailing a all day long. Man.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He was tough as hell and could really sling hay
- 3:32Speaker 1: bails around, never got tired. Good dude. I liked working
- 3:35Speaker 1: with him, but he didn't speak English, and he was
- 3:38Speaker 1: a nice guy to me. I just treat him like
- 3:40Speaker 1: I treat him anywhere anybody else. A lot of the
- 3:43Speaker 1: like the head cowboy though, and a lot of the
- 3:45Speaker 1: other people. They'd make him ride in the back of
- 3:47Speaker 1: the truck, wouldn't matter if it was freezing, cold, raining
- 3:49Speaker 1: outside whatever. He had to ride in the bed of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the truck as we drove around.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Which not cool. But you know, I didn't think much
- 3:59Speaker 1: of it. As a fourteen year old. I wasn't you know.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I was just doing what I was told. But he
- 4:04Speaker 1: was a good dude, and we worked together a lot.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And I remember one time one of the guys brought
- 4:10Speaker 1: up to said at lunch, said, hey, Pedro, what do
- 4:12Speaker 1: you think of the border patrol? He said, fuck the
- 4:14Speaker 1: border patrol. Wow. And this story is taking a dark turn.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I did, but super good dude. And one other guy
- 4:25Speaker 1: who is a cowboys, like the best cowboy I ever
- 4:27Speaker 1: saw riding horses and stuff like that and with a lasso.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Really cool dude. He was also from Mexico. So I'm
- 4:33Speaker 1: chasing this. I heard it all these like a couple
- 4:37Speaker 1: hundred cattle into this pen in this alley they call it.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It's a long, thin pet. As you're heading up somewhere else,
- 4:42Speaker 1: they started to turn around and come back. His cattle
- 4:44Speaker 1: off and do they have a herd mentality? Cattle? And
- 4:48Speaker 1: for whatever reason, they started to turn around and run
- 4:50Speaker 1: back toward and they were gonna get out. So I
- 4:51Speaker 1: had to run and close the gate before they got out,
- 4:53Speaker 1: because then we're gonna have a mess and we have
- 4:55Speaker 1: to bring in the cowboys and round them all up
- 4:56Speaker 1: and get them a cycle. So I'm running as fast
- 4:58Speaker 1: as I can to try to get the gate shut
- 5:00Speaker 1: before they're running back towards this gate. I get to
- 5:03Speaker 1: the gate just in time to slam it shut, but
- 5:05Speaker 1: I didn't quite get it slam shut, and they hit
- 5:07Speaker 1: the gate, oh the cattle, and it knocked me over backwards,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and then it was just nothing but dust and hoofs
- 5:14Speaker 1: and noise. I'm rolled up in a ball on the
- 5:17Speaker 1: ground and there's just hooves founding all around me as
- 5:21Speaker 1: they all ran past me, and uh and dust everywhere,
- 5:24Speaker 1: And luckily I didn't get stepped on, or I don't
- 5:26Speaker 1: know how I didn't get stepped on. I could have
- 5:27Speaker 1: been killed pretty easily. I was mostly hurt. I had
- 5:30Speaker 1: the wind knocked out of me from the gate, hitting
- 5:32Speaker 1: me so hard in the chest, and I went over background,
- 5:34Speaker 1: so I was having trouble getting my breath. So I
- 5:36Speaker 1: was more worried about that than the cattle stepping on
- 5:38Speaker 1: me at that moment. Plus I'm a kid and I'm stupid.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But Pedro comes running over Jackjack, Are you all right? Jack?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Are you okay? This guy that I didn't think could
- 5:46Speaker 1: speak a word of English. The bosses was always just
- 5:50Speaker 1: like shrugged his shoulders, didn't understand what they were saying.
- 5:53Speaker 1: At least that much spoke perfectly. I was like, yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm okay, Pedro, you can talk. What's the deal? Am
- 6:02Speaker 1: I dreaming? Yeah? Exactly? It was so odd.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Maybe it's just pretending he didn't speak English.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah he was. He was obviously pretending he didn't speak English,
- 6:10Speaker 1: so he just didn't have.
- 6:11Speaker 2: To deal with the Well, not only that, if your
- 6:15Speaker 2: bosses assume that, then they'll say things around him. Then
- 6:18Speaker 2: he would like to know. Eight.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's probably true, HIPPERI gives you a little bit
- 6:21Speaker 1: of info. Yeah yeah, and he'll picked me up and
- 6:25Speaker 1: dust me off and then went back to the uh
- 6:27Speaker 1: no no englis for the rest of the time I
- 6:30Speaker 1: worked with him.
- 6:31Speaker 3: My mom's first husband was Chinese, so she speaks She
- 6:34Speaker 3: used to speak fluent Mandarin, but she still sometimes can
- 6:37Speaker 3: pick it up.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Every now and then.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And when she the amount of times where she caught
- 6:41Speaker 3: people talking shit oh wow, especially at restaurants, because she,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know, they'd sit down and she'd be looking at
- 6:48Speaker 3: the menu and then she would bust out like they'd
- 6:51Speaker 3: you know, they'd say something, and then they'd come back
- 6:53Speaker 3: to the table for her to order, and she'd order
- 6:54Speaker 3: and just pristine Mandarin, and they'd look at her.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Like, oh, whoops, that's awesome that you got a story
- 7:00Speaker 1: like that from a Mexican restaurant, don't you You figured
- 7:03Speaker 1: out something they were saying to you. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 2: When I was in high school, working at a nice
- 7:10Speaker 2: Mexican restaurant is like, sit down, you bring your date
- 7:13Speaker 2: there type Mexican restaurant, and the chefs were all Mexican
- 7:20Speaker 2: and they would you know, frequently we the bussers, and
- 7:24Speaker 2: we'd bring food out and stuff like that.
- 7:26Speaker 1: We'd have to ask.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Them to do things or say hey, this, we need
- 7:29Speaker 2: more of this or whatever, and sometimes we were a
- 7:31Speaker 2: pain in their ass and they would respond with a
- 7:35Speaker 2: variety of cheerfully said shre thing, pandejo that sort of thing,
- 7:41Speaker 2: or you got a capron And capron can just mean dude,
- 7:45Speaker 2: but it also means like bastard or like depending on
- 7:49Speaker 2: the context, that can be like an anti gay thing
- 7:52Speaker 2: or what have you. But so they would just casually
- 7:54Speaker 2: call us dix and gay fellas and whatever with a
- 7:59Speaker 2: cheerful look on their face. And it never occurred to us, well,
- 8:01Speaker 2: what are you gonna do? You can't like look that
- 8:03Speaker 2: up in nineteen eighty two.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Right, So, but they would say it with the intonation
- 8:09Speaker 1: of like they were saying yes, sir, or some sure thing, buddy, Yes,
- 8:13Speaker 1: my friend, sure thing, penis a nice job, you ballius,
- 8:17Speaker 1: wonder sure thing you dick? Yeah, but good, No, I'm sorry,
- 8:21Speaker 1: that was the wrong turn of voice. Yeah, give me
- 8:23Speaker 1: two minutes, you dick. Wouldn't that be fun if you
- 8:27Speaker 1: say thanks? Would't that be fun if you could do
- 8:28Speaker 1: that with your bosses. Yes, they don't speak to the new lingers.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You say, sure thing, ass had. I'll get all right
- 8:33Speaker 1: on that. Just one clarification. We were nobody's boss, right,
- 8:40Speaker 1: we were the lowest.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Wrong.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Is this the same place where you would eat the
- 8:44Speaker 1: leftovers off people's plates?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:46Speaker 1: Absolutely, in front of them while they were sitting there.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, leftovers and I'd sit down. Hey give
- 8:51Speaker 2: me that.
- 8:52Speaker 1: No, they happened regularly. Sure, some.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Petit woman would order a big old breed. Oh she'd
- 8:59Speaker 2: need a third of It'd cut off like an inch
- 9:02Speaker 2: and then finish the.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Rest of it, which I think is awesome. It's like
- 9:05Speaker 1: a tip.
- 9:06Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It was great, like a tip.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Young, poor and well fed.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Well, I guess that's it.
