- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 8th of
- 0:16April and I'm not sure about where you are, but summer is
- 0:20well and truly gone here down in Tasmania and the cooler weather
- 0:24is setting in and I think I'm actually OK with that.
- 0:27I'm really enjoying the cycles and the seasons that roll on
- 0:31together. As we know that one is done and
- 0:34the next comes and they will come around again as happens
- 0:37with so much of our life and in our reading.
- 0:41We are in a very good cycle at the moment in Israel's up and
- 0:46down cycle, obedience and disobedience with their God.
- 0:51We are in a very good obedient cycle reading through the book
- 0:54of Joshua where they are just hitting home runs.
- 0:58They are coming out of their time in the wilderness and are
- 1:01coming into the good stuff that God has promised them, their
- 1:05land and peace and prosperity. And in this week we are reading
- 1:10about them preparing to cross over the Jordan into this land
- 1:14and take up their inheritance. So let's continue reading this
- 1:16together, shall we? Holy Spirit, reveal to us
- 1:21something of you so that we can know you more and love you more.
- 1:28My friends, let's do it. Let's read together.
- 1:30Joshua chapter 2. Then Joshua secretly sent out
- 1:43two spies from the Israelite camp at Acacia Grove.
- 1:47He instructed them scat out the land on the other side of the
- 1:51Jordan River, especially around Jericho.
- 1:54So the two men set out and came to the House of a prostitute
- 1:57named Rahab and stayed there that night.
- 2:01But someone told the king of Jericho, some Israelites have
- 2:04come here to night to spy out the land.
- 2:07So the king of Jericho sent orders to Rahab, Bring out the
- 2:11men who have come into your house, for they have come here
- 2:14to spy out the whole land. Rahab had hidden the two men,
- 2:19but she replied. Yes, the men were here earlier,
- 2:23but I didn't know where they're from.
- 2:25They left the town at dusk as the gates were about to close.
- 2:28I don't know where they went. If you hurry you can probably
- 2:31catch up with them. Actually she had taken them up
- 2:35to the roof and hidden them beneath bundles of flax she had
- 2:37laid out. So the King's men went looking
- 2:40for the Spires along the road leading to the shallow crossings
- 2:44of the Jordan River, and as soon as the King's men had left, the
- 2:48gate of Jericho was shut. Before the Spires went to sleep
- 2:52that night, Rahab went up on the roof to talk with them.
- 2:57I know the Lord has given you this land, she told them.
- 3:00We are all afraid of you. Everyone in the land is living
- 3:04in terror. For we have heard how the Lord
- 3:06made a dry path for you through the Red Sea when you left Egypt.
- 3:10And we know what you did to Cyhon and Ogg, the two Amorite
- 3:14kings east of the Jordan River, whose people you completely
- 3:18destroyed. No wonder our hearts have melted
- 3:21in fear. No one has the courage to fight
- 3:24after hearing such things, For the Lord your God is the supreme
- 3:28God of the heavens above and the earth below.
- 3:32Now swear to me by the Lord that you will be kind to me and my
- 3:35family. Since I've helped you.
- 3:37Give me some guarantees that when Jericho is conquered, he
- 3:41will let me live along with my father and mother, my brothers
- 3:44and sisters and all their families.
- 3:47We offer our own lives as a guarantee for your safety, the
- 3:51men agreed. If you don't betray us, we will
- 3:54keep our promise and be kind to you when the Lord gives us the
- 3:57land. Then, since Rahab house was
- 4:01built into the town wall, she let them down by a rope through
- 4:05the window. Escape to the Hill Country, she
- 4:08told them. Hide there for three days from
- 4:11the men searching for you. Then when they have returned,
- 4:14you can go on your way. Before they left, the men told
- 4:19her, We will be bound by the oath we have taken only if you
- 4:23follow these instructions. When we come into the land, you
- 4:27must leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window through
- 4:30which you let us down. And all your family members,
- 4:33your father, mother, brothers and all your relatives must be
- 4:37here inside the house. If they go out into the street
- 4:40and are killed, it will not be our fault, but if anyone lays
- 4:44their hand on people inside this house, we will accept the
- 4:47responsibility for their death. If you betray us, however, we
- 4:52are not bound by this oath in any way.
- 4:55I accept your terms, She replied, and she sent them on
- 4:58their way. Leaving the scarlet rope hanging
- 5:01from the window, the Spires went up into the Hill Country and
- 5:05stayed there three days. The men who were chasing them
- 5:08searched everywhere along the road, but they finally returned
- 5:11without success. Then the two spies came down
- 5:15from the Hill Country, crossed the Jordan River and reported to
- 5:18Joshua all that had happened to them.
- 5:21The Lord has given us the whole land, they said, for all the
- 5:24people in the land are terrified of us.
- 5:37I thank you, Jesus, for everything that you have given
- 5:41us, that through your death and resurrection you have given us
- 5:46not only a living hope, but a sure path to eternal life
- 5:52through you and all that you've done for us.
- 5:56Oh, and as we rest in you, looking forward to that day
- 5:59where we will be reunited with you forever, you strengthen us
- 6:04in our faith in this promise, and you fill us with joy as we
- 6:08await that glorious day. You are a wonderful, wonderful
- 6:12God. Thank You that you hold true to
- 6:17your promises, and your love for us knows no bounds.
- 6:22We praise you and we worship you, and we pray all of this in
- 6:26your name, Jesus, Amen.
