- 0:34Welcome to Drive Thru episode number 14.
- 0:37This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:40motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:43Now let's pull up to window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:47That's right, Tanya.
- 0:48And this month, Brad's not with us.
- 0:50He's out on paternity leave, but we have a special guest host.
- 0:54It's Mark Schenck, petrolhead extraordinaire, who some of you might
- 0:59recognize from our 90s What Should I Buy?
- 1:02episode.
- 1:03So welcome to the drive thru, Mark, and thanks for coming on.
- 1:05Awesome.
- 1:06It's great to be back.
- 1:07I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:08Haven't gone through the notes.
- 1:09This should be a lot of fun.
- 1:11Well, we're going to kick off this month.
- 1:13Like we do every month with a showcase brand and we're doubling down with
- 1:17respect to the episode you did, where we talked about Mercedes and BMW.
- 1:21So we're going to hit up both right away.
- 1:23Mercedes has revealed their.
- 1:27G Wagon electric concept, which apparently is not really a concept,
- 1:33but a near production version.
- 1:37G Wagon.
- 1:38I am geeked about this.
- 1:41This is with their whole EQ platform.
- 1:44They got the EQS that's coming out.
- 1:46That's the sedan and the EQG here now.
- 1:49And unlike the other EQ Versions that stray a little bit from what
- 1:55we normally see from Mercedes.
- 1:57The G wagon is looking like classic G wagon.
- 2:01It's boxy.
- 2:03It's got some round headlights.
- 2:04So it already sold me square body round by I'm good with it.
- 2:08I like it.
- 2:09It looks good.
- 2:10This is what we talk about.
- 2:10Hummer did it
- 2:11first.
- 2:11This is what we
- 2:12talk about.
- 2:12Mercedes is doing it better.
- 2:14Well, there's that.
- 2:15But this is what we talk about every month.
- 2:17We talk about the fact that if you do retro right, you can take a lot of
- 2:21these cars and make them super cool EVs without reinventing the wheel.
- 2:25Not everything has look like a spaceship.
- 2:28And one of our members in our group, one of the veteran off roaders,
- 2:31he actually off roads a G Wagon.
- 2:32It's a 2000s era.
- 2:34They all look the same from like, you know, World War II up until today.
- 2:38And even this thing, there's not much difference, but you know, probably
- 2:41independent suspension all the way around and all those electric goodies
- 2:44and things like that, that Drew was actually talking about on his episode.
- 2:48I think this is cool.
- 2:49This is the right Move.
- 2:51They don't get a choice, right?
- 2:52Right.
- 2:52Move wrong.
- 2:53Move.
- 2:53It's a move they got to make.
- 2:55Cause it's like Pepsi not doing diet.
- 2:56It's gotta happen.
- 2:57I think the LEDs, like all over might be a little much.
- 3:01I mean, they've just gone all the way in on that grill, which is hysterical.
- 3:05I mean, it started with the S class coupe and it was kind of like, Oh,
- 3:09it's like the starlight grill and now they're just like, nah, screw it.
- 3:12Well, we're just going to put an LED in each component.
- 3:14It's really a third headlight.
- 3:16Is LEDs the replacement for Chrome?
- 3:19Is that like the new thing?
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:21It's like LEDs.
- 3:22Are they going to be like the fins from the fifties?
- 3:24Uh, you know,
- 3:25I could be okay with that.
- 3:26Cause you could turn the LEDs off, but you can't turn Chrome off.
- 3:30You can spray paint it though.
- 3:33So I haven't read about this.
- 3:34Have they announced anything particularly spectacular about it?
- 3:37I mean, I see 577 horsepower, like at least with a Hummer, when they
- 3:40came out, it was like, they had just like crazy hyperbolic type
- 3:44numbers all around the Hummer and this is, The European Hummer, right?
- 3:48This is their military vehicle made civilian.
- 3:51Although this is a lie.
- 3:52Now, the current version is not a military vehicle, but so is the Hummer.
- 3:56So
- 3:57I don't, I don't think the five 77 is this vehicle.
- 4:01That's the current.
- 4:02Top rated G class, gas power, because really all they're talking
- 4:07about here in car and driver is that it's got four motors on each
- 4:10wheel and it's all wheel drive.
- 4:13If it's got four electric motors, it's probably doing pretty well.
- 4:15That
- 4:15thing's going to rip.
- 4:16Plus that will be electronically controlled all wheel drive where you
- 4:20can send a hundred percent of the power.
- 4:23To 25 percent of the vehicle.
- 4:25That's pretty slick.
- 4:26I'm curious to see how that would work in an off road condition.
- 4:29And I know a lot of people that buy G wagons are going to and from their
- 4:32private schools and whatnot, or the soccer field, but there are folks out there
- 4:36like drew that do run them off road.
- 4:38So I'd be curious to see how this holds up against one of the legacy G wagons.
- 4:43It has a well earned reputation for an authentic off road capability.
- 4:48And they were trying to preserve that with the Hummer launch.
- 4:50So hopefully when we get more details, they go in a similar direction.
- 4:53So what else is in the news from Mercedes there, Tanya?
- 4:56Well, we started out strong with a lot of excitement there around the G wagon.
- 5:00And then.
- 5:02You hear Mercedes Maybach.
- 5:04Oh, okay.
- 5:05All right.
- 5:06And then you look at it and then I'm done.
- 5:08Like, I don't even care to read the rest of the article.
- 5:11This thing is fugly.
- 5:14They're all fun.
- 5:15What's a Maybach that's not
- 5:16fugly.
- 5:18Touche.
- 5:18Like why?
- 5:20Like you have this gorgeous G wagon and then you have this sad, weird looking,
- 5:27like when Buick was making ugly things.
- 5:30You
- 5:31hit the nail on the head.
- 5:32This reminds me of a early 2000s Buick.
- 5:36It screams Park Avenue, Buick Regal, like with a massive grill that
- 5:41just, I don't know how to explain this thing, but even if you took.
- 5:45The old my book, which was basically, you know, the E-Class,
- 5:48like on steroids and just blown up.
- 5:51This doesn't even come close.
- 5:52It doesn't look like anything.
- 5:54It just looks like a deformed M class, like an ML three
- 5:5750 or something like that.
- 5:58It
- 5:58looks, it looks like a suppository on spinners.
- 6:03. I don't get it.
- 6:03And you, you know what I, you know what I think throws me off the
- 6:07most, more than even the LEDs.
- 6:09It's the two-tone paint reminiscent of like a 63 beetle.
- 6:15Where they did the same thing and kind of painted the belt line down burgundy.
- 6:18And the top was black and, and the fenders are black.
- 6:21I just, I don't, I don't know.
- 6:22I don't like
- 6:22it.
- 6:22You can, you can tell from the pictures, the grill is fake.
- 6:25Well, that I was going to say, there's no depth on the grill.
- 6:29Throwing me too, is how it's just like a painted grill.
- 6:31It's like, I get it.
- 6:32You don't want to mess up the aerodynamics, hence the giant ugly wheels.
- 6:35I mean, how much do those wheels weigh?
- 6:37800 pounds each.
- 6:39I mean out of magnesium?
- 6:40Yeah, there you go, right?
- 6:42Exactly.
- 6:42They're off of a tractor.
- 6:44Moving on from this, I found something else that just blew me away.
- 6:48And this is a little bit of a teaser for our lost and found section.
- 6:51It's going to be coming up here in a little bit.
- 6:53I found a 2011 Mercedes AMG that was a hell of a deal.
- 6:58It's listed as a C8 and in quotations, the might.
- 7:03M I G H T.
- 7:05The ad was subsequently pulled down very recently, but I managed to scour
- 7:09the internet and find the pictures.
- 7:11It might be hot trash.
- 7:15I mean, this is so bad.
- 7:17I feel like it's rolled over like an integer.
- 7:19That's just gone over the top.
- 7:20I mean, you got to respect whoever was committed enough to do that.
- 7:24They're batshit crazy.
- 7:26I don't want to hang out with them, but I have a degree of respect
- 7:30for them somewhere deep down.
- 7:31There is something weird like that going on.
- 7:33Like I want to hate this with a passion that burns with the fire of 10, 000 suns.
- 7:39And then there's just like a sliver of, but wow, somebody did this.
- 7:43I'm confused by the intakes.
- 7:45Is it a mid engine conversion?
- 7:47That's where I was going.
- 7:49How many motors does this thing have?
- 7:51Right?
- 7:51Cause it's got snorkels in the front.
- 7:54Facing the wrong direction, by the way.
- 7:56And then it's got a big ass Mercedes grill on the front, which looks
- 8:00like they glued it to the coyote from hard castle and McCormick,
- 8:04like I did not understand this car.
- 8:06That's a double tape, double sided tape.
- 8:08That's what's on there.
- 8:10I think the only thing I could appreciate are the wheels, but then
- 8:13you realize it's got this like almost boat a seer thing in the center of it.
- 8:17I don't get it.
- 8:18The way,
- 8:18the way they built it.
- 8:19Butchered the A pillar, it thinks it's like a golf cart.
- 8:22They tried to make look like a Corvette . Like it might not
- 8:25even actually be a Corvette
- 8:28. It might not even be a, it might not even be a Mercedes.
- 8:31I mean, it might be
- 8:31one of those Gators.
- 8:32They just welded all this fiberglass onto the front and
- 8:35back of it.
- 8:35I mean, it looks uncomfortable, is all get out.
- 8:38I mean, if you look at this dashboard, I mean, all of it is just.
- 8:42Absolutely.
- 8:42But, but with
- 8:43the, with the AMG emblems, I mean, this, this guy knows what he's
- 8:46whoever did this has to be a guy.
- 8:48Well, you know what I really appreciate though.
- 8:50And this is a shout out to our member, Andrew bank, the exhaust tips on this
- 8:54Mercedes are as twisted and messed up as his were on his Mercedes.
- 8:59So I guess they got something in common, except we wish this one was in a flood.
- 9:03So moving on to BMW.
- 9:05BMW not only making their, you know, i series electric cars, etc, etc.
- 9:11They also are unveiling an electric bicycle.
- 9:16Excuse me, what?
- 9:17It also gets the i designation.
- 9:20Apparently it's called the i series.
- 9:21I vision amby, A M B Y.
- 9:25I do not know what that acronym stands for.
- 9:29However, it's an electric bicycle that can go 186 miles,
- 9:35has a speed of 28 miles an hour.
- 9:39Is that a bike or a motorcycle at that point?
- 9:42They're considering it a bicycle.
- 9:45Does it have pedals?
- 9:46Yes.
- 9:47I've looked at these in Maryland and other, like, cause I wanted to
- 9:50get something similarly like this, not for any valid reason, just
- 9:53because it was crazy and a bad idea.
- 9:55I thought it would be great to do.
- 9:56The laws vary state by state.
- 9:58They're hard to get registered.
- 9:59Some people say it's a moped and it got mo has moped rules.
- 10:02Some people say it's not, it's got pedals.
- 10:04It's bicycle.
- 10:05It's so hard.
- 10:05I mean, I give him credit.
- 10:06At least he's got discs in the front and the back and it's got suspension and
- 10:10doesn't get an M version.
- 10:12In the future,
- 10:14M sport, M sport,
- 10:16M sport, M B, whatever the heck it's called.
- 10:19This goes back to what I've said many times before in the BMW world,
- 10:24there is an ass for every seat.
- 10:26And now there's a bicycle seat for that ass.
- 10:29So there is a high speed pedelec.
- 10:33They call it mode.
- 10:34It goes to 37 miles an hour.
- 10:36That's fast on a bicycle.
- 10:39Yeah, you're hauling butt.
- 10:40That's motorcycle territory.
- 10:41It has a version without pedals, it looks like, and more of like a cafe
- 10:45racer style seat than a bicycle seat.
- 10:48Do you actually
- 10:48change gears or is it a double clutch?
- 10:51I mean, EK on
- 10:53your bicycle.
- 10:54This is borderline bicycle and very slow.
- 10:57Slim line moped.
- 10:59It's not unattractive.
- 11:00Like they've done a good job in terms of the look and everything.
- 11:03I think it's, it's cool.
- 11:05I'm a little suspect of that rear swing arm.
- 11:09It has no rear fork.
- 11:11I thought that was kind of odd.
- 11:12That's a little bit more like dirt bike style, but I'm also looking at
- 11:16the first image going, I just don't understand if that's a rendering
- 11:19or if that's defying physics.
- 11:21They have pictures of somebody on it.
- 11:23But I think the pictures are all in the pedal version.
- 11:26Not that little race one.
- 11:28I think I would try it though.
- 11:29In all honesty, I would give this thing a go.
- 11:31Being a bicycle fan, I'd give it a turn.
- 11:34The unfortunate part is probably cost like, you know.
- 11:3625 grand.
- 11:39Oh, yeah.
- 11:40I'm shocked.
- 11:40It gets that many miles on those huge tires.
- 11:43I mean, the rolling resistance on tires, even on the street one, as opposed to
- 11:46the knobby one, those are pretty, look at some of those mountain bikes tires,
- 11:50a lot of road noise,
- 11:53big tires.
- 11:54Speaking of a lot of road noise.
- 11:56The Rolls Royce Hybrid Dump Truck?
- 11:59Uh, first of all, that is a BMW product, but what?
- 12:02But it's hybrid, so it shouldn't be making noise, right?
- 12:04If Rolls Royce makes dump trucks, let's just start with that.
- 12:09Is this THE Rolls Royce, or is it Because they split the
- 12:11company, like, a while ago, right?
- 12:13Like, how does that work?
- 12:14It's all BMW at the end of the day, isn't it?
- 12:17It looks a lot like Well, no, because
- 12:18remember when BMW bought Rolls Royce, they screwed up and didn't buy
- 12:21the ability to use the Rolls Royce logo because they split Rolls Royce
- 12:24Commercial from Rolls Royce Automobile.
- 12:26So it sounds like the Rolls Royce is providing the engine,
- 12:29but the dumpers themselves are by a different manufacturer.
- 12:33So they're just putting a motor in it.
- 12:34So my other question is, are they authorized to pass under
- 12:38bridges on interstates in Georgia?
- 12:40Depends on their height and whether or not Georgia needs the bridge moved.
- 12:45That doesn't even look like a dump truck.
- 12:46That looks like one of those mining operation type.
- 12:50Based on the height of those safety rails on the side.
- 12:53I mean, that thing is.
- 12:54It's two stories, I think.
- 12:5510 foot tire.
- 12:56It's probably one of the Rolls Royce turbines.
- 12:59I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
- 13:00Turbine hybrid.
- 13:01That's actually kind of a cool combination.
- 13:02I'd like to see how that works and how that operates.
- 13:05I'm sorry.
- 13:05I should read the article.
- 13:06I will say styling wise, the Rolls Royce Cullinan and this dump
- 13:12truck, really not too different.
- 13:13In defense of the comment, this was unveiled at a mining convention, so
- 13:20Like right before the show, I was just scouring.
- 13:23The M3 wagon looks like it's coming this generation.
- 13:26Really?
- 13:27Probably not to the U.
- 13:28S.
- 13:28It just popped up some, uh, photos of the camouflage, you know, they
- 13:32put that crazy black and white.
- 13:34Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:35Camouflage.
- 13:35The
- 13:35spy paint.
- 13:36The question is, have they run it around the Nuremberg ring yet?
- 13:38Because then you know it's legit.
- 13:40When they do that, the car's coming out.
- 13:42I mean, they're just photos of it on the streets in Germany, not around Nuremberg.
- 13:46But it looks pretty cool.
- 13:46I'll have to keep tabs on that.
- 13:48Then
- 13:48see if we can beg to get her over here.
- 13:49We talked about wagons a while back.
- 13:51It's, it's one of those things where it's diminishing returns.
- 13:53The numbers of wagons every year are getting smaller and smaller and
- 13:57smaller and being replaced by CUVs and SUVs and gigantic hatchbacks,
- 14:01what's called what they really are.
- 14:03Right.
- 14:03Unfortunately, that's all the news we could come up with for
- 14:06Mercedes and BMW this month.
- 14:08So we know they get it.
- 14:09They got to do something a little bit more exciting.
- 14:11They got to get out there, but these are, these are pretty
- 14:12interesting, but I think we need to move on to Volkswagen Audi group.
- 14:17Do we, should we?
- 14:18I'm very annoyed.
- 14:21Sadly, the beetle, they put it to rest.
- 14:24It's a very unfortunate, and I hope with the resurgence of, you know, retro
- 14:28and electric cars and retro electric.
- 14:31That the Beetle, I will say it again, is the perfect candidate for an electric car.
- 14:38Stick those batteries back in the back where the original air cooled engine was.
- 14:43Get that frunk.
- 14:44Volkswagen, you need to do this.
- 14:46And you need to do it.
- 14:48Soon.
- 14:49The frickin Aura Ballet Cat comes out.
- 14:53Wait,
- 14:54what?
- 14:54If we remember that hideous punk cat, this Chinese knockoff of the Beatle
- 15:01that we talked about several months ago, apparently now there's the EV version
- 15:05that they're calling the Aura Ballet Cat.
- 15:08And it's also ugly.
- 15:10And the problem is apparently there might not be patents on the beetle
- 15:13design and if there aren't freaking people in Wolfsburg need to get on this.
- 15:17Either need to dig up something to block the use of this design or I don't
- 15:24know what quickly throw some battery packs in the back of a new beetle or
- 15:28an old beetle or an original whatever.
- 15:30Get it done.
- 15:31We shouldn't be surprised the uh People's wagon is popular in the
- 15:35people's Republic, but I mean, somehow they managed to make it uglier, which
- 15:39is hard to do and they did it though.
- 15:43So maybe commendable, but still.
- 15:45And that's a huge debate too.
- 15:46I mean, we talked to somebody recently that was like, Hey, tell us, you
- 15:49know, what you think is an ugly car.
- 15:51And they're like the beetle.
- 15:51And I'm like, really?
- 15:52I've never heard anybody say that before.
- 15:55And they're like, yeah, but it's ugly, but it's ugly.
- 15:57It's cool.
- 15:57I guess you could say the same thing about the Fiat 500 or the
- 16:00Mini or anything of that era.
- 16:02They were all designed similarly, but I'm with, I'm with you, Tanya, this
- 16:04copycat, let's call it what it is.
- 16:07It needs to stop.
- 16:08It needs to go away.
- 16:09I mean, it looks
- 16:09like a bloated crossover interpretation of a beetle.
- 16:12I mean, the beetle has proportions and it has some things going for
- 16:15it certainly, but this is bad.
- 16:17It's like we're trying to modernize it and make the lines more modern, but it's like
- 16:21they did that already with the new beetle.
- 16:23Yes.
- 16:23Twice.
- 16:24But this is just.
- 16:26Elongating it, making it more sedan ish almost.
- 16:29I don't know, more like a wagon.
- 16:31It's just not right.
- 16:32It's like, we're taking the front end of an original beetle, but then trying
- 16:36to still modernize the side view and the rear, so we're taking a new beetle
- 16:41and an original beetle and morphing them together, and we just need to stop.
- 16:45And we just need to take the new beetle ish design and put an electric motor.
- 16:49With a VW badge on it.
- 16:51End of story.
- 16:51Boltwagon for the win.
- 16:53Done.
- 16:54Done.
- 16:55All right.
- 16:56So let's talk about VW's ID series, which are gaining popularity here
- 17:00in the States as well as overseas.
- 17:03Yes, apparently the ID3 Hatch, which is, you know, the more golf sized
- 17:09version, which we're not getting it here yet, if at all, who knows?
- 17:15But in Germany, the Lower Saxony Police Department has already ordered 215 ID.
- 17:233 electric hatchbacks.
- 17:25to use as police cars.
- 17:28The Lower Saxony Police Department knows who pays the taxes that fund
- 17:31them, so they got to keep the jobs program that is Volkswagen going.
- 17:37Nonetheless, it's pretty cool.
- 17:40We already talked about A remote island in Greece that was
- 17:44using ID fours as police cars.
- 17:47I just find it funny that they're using the bigger version on a smaller locale.
- 17:51And then they got these little, you know, tiny little micro cars
- 17:55that they're, they're running around in this police cars.
- 17:57I
- 17:57hope this is parking enforcement or something like, come on guys.
- 18:00You're
- 18:01in the land of the Autobot.
- 18:02Like, what are you going to do?
- 18:03They're going to run out of juice.
- 18:04That's what they're going to do.
- 18:06Yes.
- 18:07And we're going to bring this back up a little bit later.
- 18:10Excellent.
- 18:11But there's a lot of buzz right now around the ID buzz.
- 18:15There was a sighting of a, of an ID buzz.
- 18:18So that's the van, the new kind of mannequin for those that
- 18:22don't recall what the ID buzz is.
- 18:24In a robo taxi guys, as they called in the article, essentially, I think
- 18:29they're testing self driving capability.
- 18:31So it's a self driving test vehicle.
- 18:34Has
- 18:35a very similar kit load out to the Waymo cars, full LIDAR
- 18:39spectrum up front and on top.
- 18:41Pretty cool though.
- 18:42So what got me about this, when I saw this come across my desk from
- 18:45garage riot, I noticed something.
- 18:48All the previous renderings of the ID buzz, it seemed a lot smaller.
- 18:54This thing literally looks like a previous generation Euro van that's been updated.
- 18:59Now I'm confused.
- 19:00How big is the ID buzz going to be?
- 19:02I don't know.
- 19:03I don't think we know being still a concept.
- 19:05They obviously have reign to, to make changes, especially if there's issues
- 19:09with Safety compliance and whatnot that they have to increase the size.
- 19:13Or maybe some market studies said that people were unhappy.
- 19:16If it was too small, I don't know.
- 19:18We
- 19:18need a banana for scale.
- 19:21Well, that's a good point too, is it's tricky in the photo.
- 19:24Sometimes when you don't have something next to it to reference,
- 19:28sometimes these things look bigger or smaller than they actually are,
- 19:31but you know, what's smaller than we think it is this new VW called the ID.
- 19:38Oh, yes.
- 19:38This is their little mini like a hatchback, like a rabbit bigger.
- 19:42So trying to be like this little mini SUV, but it's way, I mean, it's hard to tell
- 19:48in this picture because they say it's a mini SUV and I look at this and I'm like,
- 19:51this is very small SUV is a stretch.
- 19:54Compact crossover, since that's the new flavor of the
- 19:57day, maybe a normal size golf.
- 20:02I mean, if you look at, look at where the rear door handle is, it's over the
- 20:06center point of the wheel, which means your ass is sitting on the rear axle.
- 20:11You can get away with that packaging and electric car for sure.
- 20:13But no, one's been that aggressive, right?
- 20:15I mean, the volt is pretty small.
- 20:17The
- 20:18minis are that small where you're basically sitting over the rear wheels.
- 20:21That thing has no trunk, which is
- 20:24akin to a mini,
- 20:25but it also kind of reminds me of that Honda concept
- 20:28behind
- 20:28the
- 20:29E
- 20:29exactly.
- 20:30So it reminds me of that kind of reminds me of that Fiat one 26
- 20:33concept, that rendering we talked about a couple of months back.
- 20:35I mean, I like the fact that it's cute and small.
- 20:38It'd be fun in one of those ancient cities in Italy where you can barely
- 20:42get a Fiat 500 through these alleyways.
- 20:44So I understand why.
- 20:45This thing exists.
- 20:47I just don't see it really working for let's say our shores as an example.
- 20:52Yeah.
- 20:52And they went with the yoke for the steering wheel.
- 20:55Uh, that's a hard
- 20:55pass.
- 20:57Yeah.
- 20:57I don't understand why cars are doing that.
- 21:00I want to feel
- 21:01like I'm driving a 737 very sportily.
- 21:03Except okay.
- 21:05You know?
- 21:05Yeah.
- 21:05I mean, this isn't a formula car your hands.
- 21:09Yes.
- 21:09When you're racing, Oh, don't move your hands.
- 21:12Let's not get into that can of worms, but In the streets, you often are making
- 21:17a turn that's more than 45 degrees.
- 21:20Yeah.
- 21:21Unless, yeah, unless the steering ratio is insane, in which
- 21:24case it would be very twitchy.
- 21:26There's another new Audi prototype that's coming to the table.
- 21:30The
- 21:30Audi Grand Sphere is what they're calling it.
- 21:33It's a concept right now and it's what they're using to launch their
- 21:37vision of a self driving luxury car.
- 21:40So who knows if this will actually come to any sort of fruition?
- 21:43I mean, when you look inside of it, it has nothing.
- 21:46I mean, it's full self driving.
- 21:47There's no dashboard, but where the dashboard would be,
- 21:50it can project a screen there.
- 21:53There's no steering wheel.
- 21:54I mean, it's like you're in the fanciest first class.
- 21:58Qatar Airways plane, your own private pod there.
- 22:02So the question is, this does not grow or shrink like the
- 22:05Audi we talked about last month?
- 22:06No, I believe not.
- 22:07This one they're saying is essentially as long as an A8L.
- 22:11Oh, that's huge.
- 22:13Because they have no, you know, if it's electric and all that, they're
- 22:15actually probably getting even more cabin space because they don't need,
- 22:19you know, the room for the big honking V8 or whatever that's in that car.
- 22:22So it's a giant limousine
- 22:24with four seats.
- 22:25So
- 22:26they all, they all turn around in different directions, right?
- 22:30They're like swivel chairs or whatever.
- 22:32So
- 22:32I mean, the pictures look like the, that would be hard to do
- 22:36just based
- 22:36off the backseat.
- 22:38Definitely cannot.
- 22:38It's one giant bench.
- 22:40I realized people would worry about motion sickness, but.
- 22:42You might as well take the crash advantages of facing backwards.
- 22:45It's so much safer.
- 22:46Let me ask you this about Audi's current line of concepts, right?
- 22:50And I feel like we're in this era of concept cars.
- 22:53And I wrote an article about this, I think a year or two ago.
- 22:55It's like good ideas and bad execution and the evolution of some of these
- 22:59concepts that never come to fruition.
- 23:00And then people forget about them and then eventually they find their way.
- 23:04I mean, you can go back.
- 23:05As an example to the Audi Avis in the early nineties that found its way into
- 23:09the Nardo and eventually into the Bugattis and the R8 and all this kind of stuff.
- 23:13And they're part of that family tree.
- 23:15But what I'm starting to notice with the Audis, and I feel like
- 23:18they've been doing this for a while, they restyle all their cars.
- 23:21So they look the same and you can't tell the A5 from the A4 from the seven
- 23:25from the eight, except for the number of doors and the length of the wheelbase.
- 23:28But every new Audi I've seen so far, I'm like, wow, that's cool.
- 23:33And then I go.
- 23:34Are these going to all be on the new Batman movie?
- 23:36All feel like Bruce Wayne should be driving them.
- 23:38I just, I don't get it.
- 23:40You know what this front end of the grand sphere reminds me of?
- 23:42And I know it doesn't look similar, but it's just like, you kind of look
- 23:46at it at first glance and you see it.
- 23:48The Audi Avis.
- 23:49I mean, I think we're definitely in an era where 50 years from now, they'll be
- 23:54making jokes about the prototype cars.
- 23:56Like we did about prototypes from the fifties that were like, Oh, we're
- 23:58going to fly everywhere and we're gonna do all kinds of crazy stuff.
- 24:02I do think it's a reflection of how scared, not just the automakers
- 24:06are the entire supply chain.
- 24:08I mean, I've seen crazy stuff coming out from tire manufacturers, like.
- 24:13Everybody's so afraid of being disrupted and existential kind of changes to the
- 24:17business model that they're getting really ambitious with where this
- 24:22might go, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is sometimes
- 24:25come across as a little ridiculous.
- 24:27The concepts these days are just getting more attention, right?
- 24:30Concept cars have always been.
- 24:32Ridiculous looking, especially the ones that actually never go anywhere.
- 24:36I mean, if you go looking through concept cars, they all are ludicrous.
- 24:39You go back and look at, you know, 50 years ago, the concept
- 24:42car, we're laughing at them.
- 24:43Like, Oh my God.
- 24:44And someone thought this was a good idea.
- 24:46I don't know what to say in that regard.
- 24:48If this comes to fruition and would it actually look like this?
- 24:52Or not hard to say,
- 24:55keep it going there, Bruce Wayne.
- 24:56But speaking of other futuristic blade runner, 2049 looking cars.
- 25:01Last month, we talked about Audi's proposed entry for the Dakar rally.
- 25:06The car fighter that they built is pretty wicked looking.
- 25:10I mean, it definitely is like the 13th Cylon.
- 25:12I mean, it's all sorts of angles and LEDs and whatnot.
- 25:16We got a hold of this teaser video and we're like, this is really cool.
- 25:19This is really epic.
- 25:20It also.
- 25:21conjured up a lot of questions about how are they going to run a car in the
- 25:24desert on just electric where are they going to stop and quote unquote fuel
- 25:27up and things like that but there's an interesting bit of news that also popped
- 25:32up surrounding this and named synonymous in the world rally world in the gymkhana
- 25:37world in the world of ford is ken block And now Ken Block has signed with Audi
- 25:44to help develop this Dakar fighter.
- 25:46And I think that's super exciting.
- 25:48And I don't want to spend too much time talking about this.
- 25:50Spoiler alert.
- 25:52We actually have a guest and an episode coming up later this fall where we talk to
- 25:57a very close friend of Ken Block's and get some inside scoop on what's going on into
- 26:02Ken's past and projects they've worked on together and where he's going with Audi.
- 26:06So stay tuned for that.
- 26:07But I also want to talk about another VW motor sports development.
- 26:12Cause you don't normally hear about VW in motor sports, like
- 26:16you do Porsche or you do Audi.
- 26:18Volkswagen's always just kind of the parent company, you know, setting up
- 26:21the funding lines for these racing series, you know, the last VW only
- 26:25racing series, I think I watched was Hans Stuck during the beetle cup
- 26:28racing in the UK about 20 years ago.
- 26:30Right.
- 26:31Now there's talks that in 25 and 26.
- 26:36VWs setting up to partner with Red Bull to make a play in Formula
- 26:41One to provide the hybrid systems for the Red Bull Formula One cars.
- 26:46I think this is awesome.
- 26:48More people participating, more manufacturers participating is always.
- 26:52Always awesome.
- 26:53That's the constant struggle in F1.
- 26:55Nothing but good news as far as I'm concerned.
- 26:57So part of the article that we posted, it'll be part of the show notes.
- 27:00They talk about this thing called the MGU H the motor generator unit heat.
- 27:05It's a really fancy.
- 27:07Hybrid electric internal combustion engine and just think of it as a
- 27:11giant electric turbocharger I'm going to, I'm going to summarize that I'm
- 27:14gonna give you the bluff on the rest of that article but Volkswagen is in
- 27:18development to provide that type of technology for Red Bull in the 2025.
- 27:2326 seasons are really looking forward to seeing Volkswagen plastered on the side
- 27:27of a formula car for the first time ever.
- 27:30So you could see that being very portable to Lamborghini and
- 27:32therefore the Audi R8 platform.
- 27:35I mean, if you look at the Countach, the, everybody jokes about its
- 27:38little 33 horsepower electric motor, which is worthy of joking about.
- 27:43It's capacitor based and not lithium, you know, so that, I mean, that,
- 27:46that's kind of the whole point of, I mean, you'd have to think
- 27:48in racing, that kind of situation.
- 27:50It's not going to be a battery based.
- 27:52Type system, because that's going to be too much weight for something like F1.
- 27:56So I think that could be very portable for both Lamborghini and Audi from that
- 28:00perspective, which is, you know, which is very cool and possibly even Porsche not
- 28:05to lead into the next topic, but we're
- 28:07absolutely going to.
- 28:08And as our Porsche aficionado on this particular episode, let's jump into it.
- 28:12Let's talk about the 718 and the mission R as they're calling it.
- 28:16It's super cool.
- 28:16I mean, you want a thousand horsepower Cayman.
- 28:20Like who doesn't want a thousand horsepower came
- 28:22everybody with a nine 11 doesn't want a thousand horsepower came in
- 28:25any self respecting person with an 11, once a thousand horsepower came
- 28:29in, I think, you know, they'd be disappointed, be embarrassed by one.
- 28:32They'd want to buy one.
- 28:33I think it's obviously race only they're setting up what, like
- 28:36this single make race series.
- 28:37It's totally bad ass.
- 28:38I mean, I'm a little biased.
- 28:39I obviously am a big Porsche fan, but I mean, the car looks badass.
- 28:43The wheels are unfortunate, but Hey, aerodynamics, you know,
- 28:47the car is totally bad ass.
- 28:49You can see the tech coming out of that translating into the all
- 28:54electric 718 that they announced.
- 28:56So, I mean, these two things are very complimentary.
- 28:59They're making a one make 718 race series.
- 29:01They're making an all electric 718.
- 29:04And so you can see the technology being extremely portable.
- 29:08The gauntlet is going to kind of be laid down for any.
- 29:12718 turbo S what GT2 versions that they come out with for this electric version.
- 29:19Everyone's going to know what the R can do.
- 29:20Cause the R came out first.
- 29:21So you have this crazy benchmark to go up against, which is insane.
- 29:24Couple of the data points that I thought were interesting to talk about that all
- 29:28electric 718 was their weight target, quote unquote, only 3, 650 pounds.
- 29:35It's portly for a Cayman that's for sure.
- 29:38But as far as, uh, all electric cars go.
- 29:41It's lightweight.
- 29:42It's very light.
- 29:43Yeah.
- 29:44I mean, short of like, you know, that little Volkswagen, we were just looking
- 29:47at some kind of postage stamp of a car.
- 29:49I thought it was interesting.
- 29:51You know, they were very transparent.
- 29:52The most important 718 buyer is a 31 year old man in China.
- 29:57I'm like, that's pretty good age to be buying your first brand new Porsche.
- 30:00They're more worried about price, weight and performance than they are range.
- 30:05And so they have a relatively modest range target of 250 miles.
- 30:10For a race car.
- 30:11That's pretty good.
- 30:12The other thing I'll say about this, I I'm in total agreement about these wheels.
- 30:15They are just atrocious, but the styling of this, especially in the
- 30:19race trim, big wings and all that kind of stuff and splitters and canards
- 30:24and whatnot, I really like this.
- 30:26I don't look at this and go, that's a Cayman.
- 30:28I look at this and go, that's something special.
- 30:31It's something different.
- 30:31It doesn't look like any other Porsche.
- 30:33It's not an evolution of something else.
- 30:35I mean, I guess it retains the windshield and maybe the A pillar
- 30:39and some of the silhouette of a, of a Cayman, but I just don't see it.
- 30:42It's a badass.
- 30:43It's, you know, the Arnold Schwarzenegger of, of Caymans.
- 30:47It's totally buff in its prime.
- 30:48It's like, this is, This is cool.
- 30:50I'm really shocked though, politically that Porsche would allow something
- 30:55like this to even be built.
- 30:56And I kind of understand why it's being targeted to a specific cup series where
- 31:02they're running against each other.
- 31:04Because like you alluded to at the beginning, you don't
- 31:06want to embarrass the 911.
- 31:07The 911 is the flagship.
- 31:09Just like when the 914s came out, 944 turbos and other cars
- 31:13where they were like, Oh, they're just good enough to be better.
- 31:16Then they find a way to neuter them, put a dorky motor in them so they
- 31:20can barely perform or something like that, because they never
- 31:22want to show up the flagship car.
- 31:24And I feel like this is in that same weird area where it's like,
- 31:27yeah, it's going to be awesome.
- 31:29We're going to hamper it.
- 31:30And then when finally a privateer gets their hands on it and, you know, finds
- 31:34a way to fit it into a class, whether it be an IMSA or WEC or something like that.
- 31:39Then I really want to know how this car stacks up against the venerable 911.
- 31:45It is interesting.
- 31:46Porsche has had these moments in their history and everybody loves
- 31:49to tell the story about the nine 28.
- 31:51And there was like, Oh, you know, this is when the nine 11 is going
- 31:53to end and the nine 28 is going to take over and blah, blah, blah.
- 31:56I think someone at Porsche said, you know, nine 11 is for boomers.
- 32:00So we're not going to go hybrid.
- 32:02You know, it's not going to get an electric version, which is
- 32:05a very bold statement to make.
- 32:07In this period of time, of course, the buyers of the nine 11 aren't
- 32:12clamoring for an electric version, but you have to think about the future
- 32:15of the brand and in the buyers that are going to be there down the road.
- 32:18So this may be the passing of the torch, right?
- 32:20Or they're sitting there and they're saying like, look,
- 32:23we can let them compete.
- 32:24I don't think.
- 32:25An all electric 718 that's faster than a GT3 or turbo S or whatever.
- 32:32I don't think the one person who buys the one is cross shopping the other.
- 32:36Like if you want a stupid fast electric sports car, you can buy a platter,
- 32:40you can get a tie can or whatever.
- 32:41I think it's really interesting from where they're going with the brand.
- 32:44Are they saying the 9 11 20 years from now is going to really struggle
- 32:48as those buyers start to age out?
- 32:51They never went electric.
- 32:52They never catered.
- 32:52And the 17 takes over.
- 32:54I mean, and if you look at
- 32:56it from a motorsport perspective, you know, we joke all the
- 33:00time that the 9 11 has been consistent, especially in the last.
- 33:04Let's say 10 years, because just like the 911 GT one from the early 2000s,
- 33:11the motor suddenly magically found its way towards the middle of the car.
- 33:16And then they said, okay, well, we're going to put it back in the back again.
- 33:18It's going to hang out over top of the rear wheels.
- 33:20And then every year, every season, it finds a way to just migrate
- 33:25forward towards the driver somehow.
- 33:28So I've always been, I have a kind of joke that.
- 33:30It's a logical conclusion that they've been evolving a bad idea
- 33:34for like 60 years, and they need to move away from this pendulum, this
- 33:37hammer that's going down the road with all that weight over the rear end.
- 33:41And it needs to be more of a mid engine sports car.
- 33:43So you're right.
- 33:44Maybe it is the passing of the torch.
- 33:45And I'm going to continue to say that I'm very happy that the 914
- 33:49finally gets its day in the sun.
- 33:51Let's call it what it is.
- 33:52Let's call it what it is.
- 33:53It is a nine 14.
- 33:54Fair enough.
- 33:55I totally agree.
- 33:56I mean, it's really frustrating when Porsche makes a product for
- 33:59a slot in the lineup and not for what the platform is capable of.
- 34:03We might be able to have her cake and eat it too.
- 34:05I don't think this means that there isn't some RSR version of.
- 34:09The nine 11 in the future in that engine gets moved forward.
- 34:12Like it has been in motorsport, can stay naturally aspirated or turbo or
- 34:16whatever, at least an IC component to me would be the best of both worlds.
- 34:20They, they actually, you know, advance that forward a little bit,
- 34:23go follow motorsport, do what they did there and do electric and 70.
- 34:27Or
- 34:28take a page out of what is it?
- 34:29The 918's playbook, you know, with the LaFerrari style or the NSX, where the
- 34:34911 still has a petrol engine in the rear, like you're saying, but maybe is
- 34:38four wheel drive no longer turbocharged going back natural aspirated, but
- 34:42has that electric motor up front to help propel it and get it there.
- 34:45So maybe a cross between it.
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:48This 718 and the 918 supercar.
- 34:51So, yeah, I mean, it's not
- 34:51like the 918 is depreciating, you know, there's still not a Carrera
- 34:55GT, you know,
- 34:56we could, we could, we could kill this whole show on this
- 34:59topic.
- 34:59Absolutely.
- 35:00So it's probably good that we move on to something lighter hearted, but also.
- 35:05Keeping with the theme of staying with tradition and following through and we
- 35:10mentioned Audi earlier and obviously Volkswagen Audi and Porsche have been
- 35:13together since the very earliest days.
- 35:16And for those of you that don't realize that the auto union started at the turn.
- 35:20of the century.
- 35:21That's the 1900s, not the 2000s.
- 35:24You know, there's a long pedigree there.
- 35:26There's a long involvement with these three families together.
- 35:29And it's actually two large families, the Porsche family and the Piek family,
- 35:32but we won't get into that whole history.
- 35:33If you want to learn more about that, listen to the little Anton episode
- 35:36that we did during this month.
- 35:38But what I'm getting at here is Audi did this heritage video.
- 35:42And it's really cool.
- 35:43We're going to include it in the show notes.
- 35:46And if you haven't seen it yet, check it out.
- 35:48It's a little bit long, but also check out the bloopers at the end, because
- 35:52it really, really makes the film.
- 35:54Tanya, I know you watched it.
- 35:55What did you think?
- 35:56I was admittedly confused in the beginning.
- 36:01Agreed.
- 36:02I
- 36:02really wasn't sure what was happening.
- 36:04I was totally into it once they went vintage with all the older
- 36:10cars, especially the IMSA and the Raleigh Quattros and all that.
- 36:13And then seeing Stuck and whatnot in this short film.
- 36:17I think the one thing that was missing or the one person that
- 36:20was missing was Michelle Mouton.
- 36:22I absolutely agree with that.
- 36:24Because with all the legends they were showing between cars and
- 36:27person, she needed to be there.
- 36:29A hundred percent.
- 36:30So I think that's unfortunate that who knows what reason why
- 36:33she wasn't, but I would have liked to have seen that representation.
- 36:36It
- 36:36sucks that Doug DeMuro makes the cut and she doesn't.
- 36:38I agree with you on that as well.
- 36:41Freaking joke.
- 36:43We need to read you on that one.
- 36:44Definitely have to have Michelle in there.
- 36:45And I will say, I agree with you.
- 36:47When the vintage car showed up, That's what did it for me.
- 36:50And a couple of things were really important.
- 36:52I really, really enjoyed the scene between Walter Rural,
- 36:56Han Stuck and Hurley Haywood.
- 36:58And when Hurley stands up and he's like, you guys have been
- 37:01holding me up for 30 years.
- 37:03You know, and he's like chucking water balloons at them.
- 37:05So I busted out laughing because it's so true.
- 37:08And a lot of people forget that Hurley started with the Audi's not
- 37:11just with Brumos Porsche, right?
- 37:13He ran the Audi's in Trans Am, but the thing that really got me, that
- 37:17Really pulled at the heartstrings because it's going to be one of those
- 37:19moments where you read about all these celebrities now that have passed because
- 37:23of COVID and all this kind of thing.
- 37:24It's that moment where you realize Hans Stuck Jr is driving his father's
- 37:30auto union, you know, 16 cylinder developed by Ferdinand Porsche senior.
- 37:36They pulled that car out of mothballs and used it in the film.
- 37:39I mean that alone, just that scene of him driving down that wooded
- 37:43road, kind of leading that parade.
- 37:45I was like, I just stopped.
- 37:46It was just, it was absolutely incredible.
- 37:48And it just, it just pulls at the heartstrings because you realize
- 37:51that's, that's a whole legacy.
- 37:54That's two generations in that same family of epic race car drivers
- 37:58and epic cars and things like that.
- 38:00So I guess what I'm getting at here is if you don't know the Audi history,
- 38:03dig into it a little bit more.
- 38:05It's absolutely fascinating and it's got many tributaries and rivulets
- 38:09that you can go down when it comes to the Volkswagen story and the Porsche
- 38:12story and how they're all intertwined.
- 38:14At the end of the day, what it really says is that they do have real
- 38:18enthusiasts, real fans that work there and that, that have that kind of passion.
- 38:22And that's how every now and again, they actually come out
- 38:25with a really amazing product.
- 38:26Like the e tron GT.
- 38:28They just need to lower the price tag on that thing.
- 38:30A hundred percent.
- 38:30It wouldn't be a drive through episode if we didn't talk about the
- 38:33fourth largest auto manufacturer in the world, Stellantis.
- 38:36And I got a call.
- 38:39There's always a lot of drama, especially with, you know, Fiat
- 38:43and Ferrari and all these things.
- 38:44And you hear about it in Formula One and you hear about it in racing.
- 38:47They always like, well, if they're not winning, let's change the rules.
- 38:50It's a very, you know, FIA sort of thing to do.
- 38:53But this latest one, uh, It's just mind bogglingly kind of idiotic.
- 38:58I was reading this article and it's in the show notes and it says, and
- 39:01I'll paraphrase it for you guys.
- 39:02The Italian government is in talks with the European union to exempt supercar
- 39:07manufacturers from a gas engine phase out.
- 39:10on their way to electrification.
- 39:12So what does that mean?
- 39:13They want to get out of jail free card so they can continue to build
- 39:17Lamborghinis and Ferraris and all these other super cars that we love and we
- 39:21enjoy and sound amazing without having to worry about turning them into EVs,
- 39:26which is kind of funny considering All these concept EV supercars that they're
- 39:30still kind of proposing, but I just had to laugh and I flag on the play yellow
- 39:35car, get these guys off the field.
- 39:36I couldn't disagree more.
- 39:37I think it's exactly what they should do.
- 39:40We've got to be realistic about if we're going to claim the environment,
- 39:43then we have to be realistic about what's driving greenhouse emissions.
- 39:46And it's the quantity of meat that people eat.
- 39:48It's completely unregulated engines.
- 39:50They use in the naval shipping.
- 39:53It's not your V12.
- 39:55Ferrari that gets driven 1500 miles a year that still manages
- 39:59to be emissions compliant.
- 40:00Hell, we let the Elise come into the country without a passenger side airbag.
- 40:04God help us.
- 40:04You know, we did, we can, we can pass on regulations when it makes sense.
- 40:09I agree.
- 40:10I agree.
- 40:11I just think it's funny.
- 40:12I think it's awesome.
- 40:13I hope they get away with it.
- 40:15If
- 40:15they can fight it and win, more power to them.
- 40:17I'm not saying, I'm just, like I said, I just had to call shenanigans on that.
- 40:20I was like, I don't know
- 40:21what to say.
- 40:22I mean, yeah, no, it's, it's newsworthy for sure.
- 40:25I just hope they win is all.
- 40:26I mean, if anyone can do it, it would have to be these hyper cars that, you know,
- 40:32a hundred are sold or something, right?
- 40:34Because, They aren't being driven.
- 40:36So on the one hand, it is kind of like, what's the big deal.
- 40:39The reality is, is yes, everybody's moving to full electric, but
- 40:43will we really, time will tell.
- 40:47Diesel's making a comeback.
- 40:48That's all I'm
- 40:49saying.
- 40:49Yeah.
- 40:49I mean, all those regulations that came up in California, which
- 40:52California has done the math.
- 40:54On what electric, what the electric car switch will do to their grid.
- 40:57They're creating regulations around the power efficiency
- 41:00of your personal computers.
- 41:02They're getting hard on the electrical grid because they know that as the
- 41:06electric creation of cars come, they do not have the capacity or anywhere near
- 41:10it today, and it will cost billions and billions to build, and we have no great
- 41:15way of really building it because we won't go nuclear, which is, you know,
- 41:18I don't want to open that can of worms.
- 41:19In Europe, there are a lot more nuclear power plants than there are in the U S.
- 41:22I just know, Mark, that if you and I were being taxed on the number
- 41:26of computers that we have in our house, it would be a very large bill.
- 41:31If you look at my network and all the devices connected.
- 41:33I am surrounded by screens like the Batcave.
- 41:35It's insane.
- 41:36But there's some other good news over in the Stellantis world.
- 41:40Yeah.
- 41:40So the Chrysler brand has named their new CEO.
- 41:44So it is a female Christine fuel coming from a Honeywell being
- 41:50their chief commercial officer.
- 41:51And apparently she also had a stint in global marketing
- 41:56with Ford a decade or so ago.
- 41:59So she's got some interesting background and hopefully she'll.
- 42:02Bring good things to the Chrysler brand.
- 42:04Yeah.
- 42:04I'm just trying to figure out what Chrysler actually slaps their badge
- 42:08on other than the Pacifica right now.
- 42:09So, you know, Hey, mini vans.
- 42:11That's cool.
- 42:12I also, when I first saw this come across my desk, I immediately
- 42:15thought Lea Iacocca, right?
- 42:16Similar background came from Ford, went to Chrysler twice, you know, save the day.
- 42:21Not that Chrysler's in bad shape right now because it's part of slant is,
- 42:24I think she has the remit over Dodge too, right?
- 42:27What's Dodge making again?
- 42:29Many Hemi's.
- 42:30That are very future proof.
- 42:32I think the bigger thing is if they're naming CEO to the brand, then they
- 42:36have some sort of short term strategy to say that we're going to try and
- 42:41revitalize this brand or try to have something other than the Pacifica or
- 42:44maybe the Chrysler 300 under the moniker.
- 42:47Right.
- 42:48So who knows, maybe.
- 42:50Unfortunately, it, it tanks probably not necessarily through any fault of her
- 42:54own, or maybe she's able to use her past marketing and strategic roles in various
- 43:01companies to help create something new that we haven't seen yet from Chrysler
- 43:05or bring back something from the past.
- 43:08But let's not bring back the K cars and EV.
- 43:10Okay.
- 43:10We do not need Aries EVs.
- 43:13I'm just going to lay it out there.
- 43:14It's not a good idea.
- 43:16They were a good idea.
- 43:16Top
- 43:17of my head.
- 43:17I really can't think of what Chrysler should come back, like
- 43:20which Chrysler model should make a
- 43:23retro reappearance.
- 43:25It's interesting.
- 43:25Like what's at the top of her list, right?
- 43:27Because if she's the CEO of the business unit of Chrysler, then
- 43:30her bigger problem is Dodge than the actual fact that Chrysler.
- 43:34Is a joke.
- 43:35I mean, Dodge is where they have all the volume that's also having where the most
- 43:39aged platform is reading the article.
- 43:42I mean, it looks like she, she has the unit, which is really cool.
- 43:45I mean, it was called Fiat Chrysler, Fiat Chrysler and Dodge.
- 43:49I've been in their headquarters and done some projects for them in my
- 43:53professional life, similar to the comment about what brought up the Audi video.
- 43:57Tons of enthusiasts work there.
- 43:58I mean, like everywhere I went from vice president, executive of whatever,
- 44:02down to people, you know, managing relationships with the dealerships, very
- 44:07passionate about their product, loved their Hemis, loved what they were doing.
- 44:11But I mean, man, all that stuff is so old.
- 44:14I would classify it like a turnaround strategy.
- 44:17Like you've really got to turn this thing around.
- 44:19If you're going to keep the brand.
- 44:21Going forward,
- 44:22the Mopar stuff hasn't been bad.
- 44:23I mean, I think Fiat did a better job with Chrysler than Mercedes did.
- 44:28Now, granted to your point, they're all running around on a hundred
- 44:31year old, you know, C and E class chassis and all this kind of thing.
- 44:35We joked about that before, especially with the challenger and the charger,
- 44:38but from the aesthetics perspective, you could really tell when the
- 44:41Italians took over and they facelifted the Jeeps and they facelifted the
- 44:45charger, which wasn't anything to write home about for quite a long time.
- 44:48And so they've done a good job.
- 44:50The Pacific is not bad looking either.
- 44:51I mean, and I'm a little biased cause we have one, but whatever, but it's just,
- 44:56but it's just, you know, they do need to do something with, they do need to do
- 45:01something with the brand that's for sure.
- 45:03And just, I'm just not sure what that is yet, but I'm, I'm very
- 45:05curious and I'm cautiously optimistic about where they're going to go.
- 45:09Okay.
- 45:09It's not to bring back the PT cruiser in any shape or form.
- 45:15Get out.
- 45:15So it's not to do that.
- 45:17What it could be is to bring back the Chrysler 300 sedan as a luxury
- 45:24Mercedes Cadillac fighter with the right styling and enhancements.
- 45:32Could that be a competitor in that?
- 45:34I agree with you there, and I'll say this, despite the early gangster style of the
- 45:39300, you know, when it was revitalized in the two thousands, every one of those I've
- 45:44had is a rental car from the, the very first reintroduced to the current ones.
- 45:49I enjoy them.
- 45:50They're very plush, they're nice places to live.
- 45:52They don't have the best motor to write home about.
- 45:54It's the same Penn star that you get in the the Dodge Caravan or whatever,
- 45:58unless you get the Hemi version, the art.
- 45:59The RT or the SRT eight or something like that, they do need to take
- 46:03it a step up to Mark's point.
- 46:05It's classy, but it's classy for Mercedes in like 2010, you know what I mean?
- 46:10At its best.
- 46:11And so they really do need to do something different to step it up.
- 46:14Apparently though, there is a 2022 300 coming.
- 46:17So that is still in their lineup.
- 46:19What I am thinking though, is Chrysler.
- 46:21If the trajectory is to kind of turn it and revitalize it, not
- 46:24that it's doing poorly, but.
- 46:26Pacifica has an advantage over the other minivans in that it's the only hybrid
- 46:32minivan that's out there right now.
- 46:34So if they take that momentum and it has been selling well and they propagate
- 46:39that into other Chrysler models, maybe Chrysler becomes the EV arm of the future.
- 46:44Dodge, Stellantis, they can use that as a jumping off point because right now they
- 46:48don't have anything that's really easy.
- 46:49And they've talked about, you know, there's sun setting the
- 46:51Charger and the Challenger.
- 46:52We talked about that on the last episode and the plans for the future
- 46:55of those two cars are completely unwritten that, you know, they said
- 46:59it's the last hoorah for the Hemi.
- 47:01We don't want to see the muscle cars go away.
- 47:03We want to keep them around, but what are they going to do in the EV space?
- 47:06And I think GM's.
- 47:07Now leapfrogged Chrysler because we were joking for a long time.
- 47:10What's, you know, what's Chevy going to do?
- 47:12Ford's way ahead of them, you know, and I guess that leads us into
- 47:15our domestic conversation a little bit as we kind of transition into
- 47:19Ford and Chevy a little bit more.
- 47:21One of the things I discovered is we used to have the horsepower wars.
- 47:25Now we have the kilowatt wars for a long time.
- 47:28Resto mod in restoration type shops have been taking like Tesla packages
- 47:34and putting them in retro cars and doing all these kinds of things.
- 47:37There's a rumor of like an E Copo from GM that's coming out, but Ford
- 47:42has put out and has teased, you know, And EV crate engine, there's
- 47:46not a ton of details on this.
- 47:47There's a lot of schematics, a lot of really interesting stuff.
- 47:50The one thing that I thought was really cool is it only measures about 22 and
- 47:55a half inches at its longest dimension.
- 47:57So that's really, really compact, which means you could put it in a lot of things,
- 48:01be it a front wheel drive and old type two bus, you know, whatever you want to
- 48:05jam this EV into the problem is they're not telling you what the power output is.
- 48:10And the comparison they made in the article was, well, the Tesla makes
- 48:13The equivalent of 577 horsepower in this new magical number.
- 48:17So I'm really curious to see where that goes.
- 48:19The one thing the article alluded to was that we'll know more at SEMA
- 48:23this fall when SEMA finally happens again, you know, here post COVID.
- 48:26So really curious to see where that goes.
- 48:28I think the whole concept of getting into the parts business around this is great.
- 48:33Obviously, the battery becomes a more important component than the engine, and
- 48:38I don't know enough to know why the, the mileage per kilowatt hour is so different
- 48:43between like Tesla's and every other Evie.
- 48:46It is a significant enough gap that I think.
- 48:49It's worth mentioning, they have a huge efficiency gap there.
- 48:52Would you have to think in the, in this kind of custom space would be a real
- 48:56advantage if they could figure that out?
- 48:58Now, unfortunately, all of these plans are now beholden to shortages, changes
- 49:04in production, obviously COVID chip shortage, all of that we hope every day
- 49:09that this stops and every month goes by and it actually seems to get worse.
- 49:13What I've heard is now because of that, Ford was going to introduce A new pickup
- 49:17called the Maverick, which I think was a little confusing because there was a Ford
- 49:20Maverick way back when, which is actually a bit of a two door coupe, kind of a
- 49:24variation of the seventies Mustang, but they decided they're going to scrap that
- 49:28because it was going to be built in India.
- 49:30And that's a 2 billion hit to Ford because they're shutting down that production.
- 49:34And then, you know, some of that is to do to chip shortages due to
- 49:37personnel and labor laws and all that.
- 49:39And it's just.
- 49:40Sad to see, I actually really like the spy photos of this Maverick truck.
- 49:44I think it's pretty cool.
- 49:45It's more attractive than the current Ranger.
- 49:47I think it's a better size.
- 49:48I mean, the F one 50 has gotten huge and the Rangers kind of
- 49:51the size of the old F one 50.
- 49:53And I, I, I hate to say it comes with some weird engine packages.
- 49:56Like who wants a pickup truck with a 2.
- 49:583 liter turbo four cylinder.
- 49:59I'm like, I just don't get it.
- 50:00Please convince me that I'm wrong.
- 50:03I heard that the, you can get the V six now, but whatever, but yeah,
- 50:07so this Maverick's kind of cool.
- 50:09Maybe it'll get built.
- 50:09Maybe it won't, but it ain't going to get built in India.
- 50:11I admittedly don't understand the, uh, I guess the link between the two
- 50:15because apparently Ford's been in India with two plants since 1995.
- 50:19And it's essentially operated at a loss this entire time, which is equated to
- 50:23about 2 billion as they haven't been able to pick up any market share there.
- 50:26So
- 50:28that's what it is.
- 50:29They're just cutting their losses.
- 50:31It's the best excuse in the world.
- 50:32You guys said it on the show last month that the chip shortage Is the best excuse
- 50:36in the world to optimize your business.
- 50:38Hey, sorry, got to lay you off.
- 50:40Uh, you know, chips.
- 50:41Hey, sorry, got to exit your country.
- 50:43You know, chips.
- 50:44Hey, sorry, got to drop this product line.
- 50:47Chips.
- 50:49I mean, you know, the gloves come off.
- 50:51They're like, Hey man, I got the best excuse in the world.
- 50:53No chips.
- 50:54Barbecue, sour cream and onion, or what are we talking about?
- 50:57Salt
- 50:57and vinegar every time.
- 50:58So GM is also shutting down plants due to chips.
- 51:05So that's all we really need to say.
- 51:07I think, I
- 51:08don't think it's permanent shutdown.
- 51:09I think it's, again, they're having to temporarily close down factories because.
- 51:13Tips
- 51:14because chips,
- 51:15can we start that?
- 51:15Hashtag chips
- 51:18because chips, Chrysler got a new CEO because chips, chips,
- 51:22but there is a positive coming out of this and actually goes back to
- 51:24something you mentioned earlier, Tanya about police cars and EVs and in the
- 51:29UK, they're going to use the car.
- 51:32We will not refer to as the Mustang, the Mach E as police vehicles.
- 51:36And I believe they're replacing the aging.
- 51:39Opel Astra diesels.
- 51:40Police officers over there are famous for running around in.
- 51:43I'm really curious to see how that turns out in the UK as well.
- 51:46I kind of feel that compared to Germany, the Mach E larger car, considering the
- 51:52British roads and all that, there's a lot more towns that are closer together
- 51:56and not massive amounts of highway.
- 51:58Obviously there's the A1 and things like that.
- 52:00There's such different environments, right?
- 52:02You compare German and British culture, like Germany, they deal
- 52:06with the legacy of the Stasi.
- 52:08And so they're, you know, they're not as big into cameras everywhere,
- 52:10looking at everything all the time.
- 52:12They have more of a kind of personal freedom bent, you
- 52:16know, hence the Autobahn.
- 52:17And so, I mean, in the UK, like what the hell do you need a Maki?
- 52:22It checks all the right boxes.
- 52:24I guess for them, it's a big car for us.
- 52:26We think of it as like, you know, not a large car, medium sized, but for
- 52:29them, it's a big paddy wagon type thing where you could build a police barrier
- 52:34in it and throw people in the back.
- 52:35But soccer
- 52:36hooligans in there.
- 52:37Yeah,
- 52:37exactly.
- 52:38Pick up your hooligans and toss them in the back.
- 52:40It's probably more of that perspective in regards to like a SUV ish.
- 52:47Electric car.
- 52:48What are your other options besides a Mach E?
- 52:52Well, as Tanya's alluded to, there's a lot of options in Europe from Renault,
- 52:55from Nissan, a multitude of manufacturers, Citroen, Peugeot, et cetera.
- 52:59Now they're under the Stellantis banner.
- 53:01So there's a lot of, Choices over there that we don't get us even on
- 53:04the Volkswagen side of the house.
- 53:06So I think it's interesting that the Mach E is going to go over there.
- 53:10I just wonder like, you know, we hear all the time again, because chips,
- 53:13how are they producing all of these?
- 53:15Or is it because they stopped producing something else that now
- 53:17they can suddenly start building Mach Es for the UK police department?
- 53:21It's even more interesting because these kinds of fleet
- 53:24sales never have good margins.
- 53:26Price is always a big part of the negotiation on the fleet sale.
- 53:29The British do love Ford.
- 53:31They've got their Ford Rally Cosworth heritage.
- 53:33So that might've been part of it.
- 53:35Like if you're a cop, do you want to be driving around in some French
- 53:38electric turd, or would you at least have something that has a
- 53:42prancing pony on the front of it?
- 53:44I don't know.
- 53:44We won't ever
- 53:45call a Mustang on this show.
- 53:48Still has the pony on the front.
- 53:50Least worst choice.
- 53:52And you know, what's funny, something we don't talk about on this show very often
- 53:55I think it's because there's not a ton of excitement coming out of the Far East.
- 54:00And that's JDM vehicles.
- 54:02And we've actually found a collection this month of vehicles that we can talk about.
- 54:06We do need to revisit one from last month.
- 54:08So what if I said, Integra, the spy photos, the renderings are out.
- 54:13What do we think?
- 54:14Oh,
- 54:14I'm sorry.
- 54:15You didn't say Honda Accord.
- 54:17I thought it was a really cool looking two door Civic.
- 54:20This alleged 2023 Acura Integra.
- 54:23Let's ignore the name for right now and look at the photo.
- 54:26This is a very handsome two door Acura.
- 54:30Very handsome.
- 54:31Yes.
- 54:32That's it.
- 54:33Have anything to do with an Integra zero,
- 54:36I guess maybe I'm a little lost.
- 54:38I had an Integra as a kid.
- 54:39I love Integras.
- 54:40I ask a question.
- 54:41Why this, why does this have nothing to do with an Integra?
- 54:44Like, I mean, Integra is just a little, a little accurate.
- 54:46I mean, other than it being two doors, I'm very sensitive to, if you're
- 54:50going to reuse the name, then I want it to be more reminiscent of the car
- 54:55namesake and I don't see if you had just shown this to me, I would've
- 54:59been like, Oh, look, the new TSX.
- 55:02It's a two door and it's quite handsome and I like it very much and look
- 55:05forward to seeing it on the road.
- 55:06But I never would have said, Oh, it's an Acura Integra or an RSX was
- 55:12supposed to be the next Integra.
- 55:13I mean, the front headlights are a little rectangular, like the Integra up
- 55:18until I don't remember the designations, unfortunately, cause it's not German.
- 55:22It's the one I drove.
- 55:23It was like a 94 was before they went to the round headlights and after it was
- 55:28the kind of early mid nineties Integra.
- 55:31I could see the front end a little bit there.
- 55:35Obviously not the aggressive air scoops and everything underneath.
- 55:38Maybe I'm stretching, but I feel like that headlight line a little bit.
- 55:41But the other rendering, the black one from the artist, not from
- 55:45Honda, that one looks more like The Integra you're talking about.
- 55:49If you kind of scroll down through that article, and if you're listening
- 55:51to this, you know, check it out in the show notes, that one is more reminiscent
- 55:55of an Integra to me than the orange, the copper car that they're showing.
- 55:59Exactly.
- 56:00So at the bottom, there's recommended stories in the middle one.
- 56:03There is.
- 56:04You know, someone's rendering that one, that one screams to me, Integra RSX.
- 56:09And that is a car that needs to be built a thousand percent.
- 56:12Yes,
- 56:13absolutely.
- 56:13Going back to the copper Integra.
- 56:15Cause it's the one that we'll probably build.
- 56:16Am I crazy or like, look at the stance and the setup, kind of the
- 56:20geometry of the back of that car.
- 56:22It doesn't have.
- 56:23That weird civic Humpty Dumpty thing going on.
- 56:26Yeah.
- 56:26Like it actually looks like it might have some suspension
- 56:29in the back that could move.
- 56:30That would be nice.
- 56:31I mean, the new civic type R turbo, whatever the heck it is
- 56:34making umpteen trillion horsepower.
- 56:36Now that's got IRS.
- 56:38I mean, the Hondas have had IRS for a while.
- 56:40I mean, I've written in one.
- 56:41They're fantastic.
- 56:42They're a little big compared to what I grew up with and what you grew up
- 56:45with as civics and integrals, which were small, compact GTI size cars.
- 56:50Now.
- 56:51They're kind of huge.
- 56:51And we've joked before you look at this and you're like, man, that's
- 56:53a really cool two door Accord.
- 56:55But now the Accord is massive.
- 56:57It's like, you know, the size of an Avalon is like a Buick.
- 57:00It's just, just huge.
- 57:02So, I mean, I guess it's, it's a coming of age thing.
- 57:04The cars get bigger, we get older, you know, whatever.
- 57:07But I guess I'm with Tanya.
- 57:08I want to see it in person.
- 57:10Cause again, like we said earlier, sometimes.
- 57:12And renderings to, to mark's point, you got to get a banana for scale.
- 57:16So you don't really know like where things are at and what
- 57:19it's going to measure out as.
- 57:20Now, if this is a re skinned type R Civic, I'm very interested
- 57:25because it is a performer.
- 57:27And I tell you what those cars out of the box turnkey on track on
- 57:31street tires are phenomenally good with a slightly better physique.
- 57:36I'm very, very interested in checking it out.
- 57:38Hopefully the price point won't be something astronomical,
- 57:40but Get ready folks.
- 57:42Get ready.
- 57:43A new skyline is coming.
- 57:46It's going to have four doors.
- 57:47And it might be an SUV.
- 57:49Can I, can I throw up on air
- 57:52a little bit in the back of your throat?
- 57:53Yeah.
- 57:54I mean, you can surely make the noise.
- 57:56We'll understand
- 57:58again, going back to names.
- 58:00If it isn't well for a GTR, don't put a skyline badge on it.
- 58:04I mean, I'm very annoyed by the Mustang Mach E.
- 58:07Let's not call that thing a Mustang.
- 58:08All right.
- 58:08Can we not?
- 58:09So, I mean, this is the same thing.
- 58:11Like a skyline is not an SUV.
- 58:13So let's just.
- 58:13Stop
- 58:14to go backwards a little bit.
- 58:15You wait till the Chrysler 300 is an SUV.
- 58:17The next one that comes out,
- 58:19That's like the Ford Taurus, the Ford
- 58:21Taurus SUV, the Ford Taurus SUV.
- 58:24Isn't there
- 58:24also like the Mitsubishi Lancer SUV?
- 58:27Yeah, it's ridiculous.
- 58:28Now there's an Eclipse, Eclipse, Eclipse SUV.
- 58:32It's like, no,
- 58:33it's so wrong.
- 58:35So wrong.
- 58:36What gets me about this car is I look at it and I just see a
- 58:39QX50 and I'm like, come on guys, you could do better than this.
- 58:42Just slap some badges on an existing infinity and pass
- 58:46it off as something else.
- 58:47I'm sorry.
- 58:48This doesn't cut the mustard.
- 58:49And you wonder why we don't talk about Japanese cars.
- 58:52I mean, so, so to be fair, this.
- 58:53Skyline wasn't the GTR, although a lot of people think the GTR is a
- 58:58trim package.
- 59:00Was
- 59:01kind of a luxury version.
- 59:02I mean, Nissan's version of it.
- 59:04They never brought it over here, but so it's like, okay, you know, uh, I never
- 59:08understood that market segment, but that's where that market segment is.
- 59:11But if you try to make that a GTR and bring it over here,
- 59:14I'm not going to buy it.
- 59:15I'm going to make fun of anybody who does.
- 59:17So there pretty
- 59:17much, but let's switch gears a little bit.
- 59:19So a little bit of tease to the motorsports world, 2022, the GR,
- 59:24the gazoo racing version of the 86, the new one that's out is going to
- 59:28be the official pace car for NASA.
- 59:30That's not the rockets and satellites.
- 59:33That's the national auto sport association championships.
- 59:36In September of 22.
- 59:38So I'm looking forward to that.
- 59:39I like the kind of paint rendering scheme they're going to do on the car.
- 59:42We talked about the new GR 86 a couple of months ago versus the new BRZ.
- 59:47They've done a facelift on them.
- 59:49I'm not convinced that they're not the same car still.
- 59:52I still think they need a turbo.
- 59:53I still think a lot of things need to happen with that platform
- 59:56because it is the Japanese 944, as I've said, many, many times.
- 1:00:00They are phenomenal cars on track.
- 1:00:02They are a lot of fun.
- 1:00:03I wouldn't throw one away if you gave one to me, you know, I'd run
- 1:00:06the hell out of it, but it's kind of cool to see that NASA has chosen the
- 1:00:0986 as their, uh, as their pace car.
- 1:00:12Since we're talking about Subaru, let's just go straight
- 1:00:15for the throat on this one.
- 1:00:16What do we think about the new WRX?
- 1:00:18All right.
- 1:00:19We're going to skip the whole pace car conversation.
- 1:00:20We'll go straight.
- 1:00:22I mean, what is there to say, right?
- 1:00:23We got to get to this WRX.
- 1:00:25I mean, I was surprised it could go fast enough to do the job.
- 1:00:27Fair enough.
- 1:00:28No, I mean the WRX at first, especially in thumbnail, I thought it was a civic,
- 1:00:32right?
- 1:00:34I think the entire interwebs thought it was the new civic and we were
- 1:00:38all being punked by asking Kutcher.
- 1:00:40I just, I don't get it.
- 1:00:41Is it the legacy?
- 1:00:42Is it the Impreza?
- 1:00:44What is this thing?
- 1:00:46I don't know, but the internet is very upset by those plastic
- 1:00:49cladding around the fenders.
- 1:00:51Because it takes a round fender and makes it angular like a Lamborghini.
- 1:00:55Like what is that?
- 1:00:56Well, there's no
- 1:00:58reason to have plastic cladding on the fenders of a WRX.
- 1:01:02But Rally bro.
- 1:01:03But rally chip, I know this isn't Rocks, chips.
- 1:01:05This isn't
- 1:01:06an STI chip.
- 1:01:07This is just a W Rx regular.
- 1:01:09Is that still?
- 1:01:09Because chips, I mean 'cause chips just, just
- 1:01:13rock chips.
- 1:01:14By the way, is copper the new color for Japan?
- 1:01:18You know, this is like Volvo from 1999 and the C 70.
- 1:01:21No, no.
- 1:01:22Like, what is this?
- 1:01:23The Acura was a nice marigold.
- 1:01:26This is . This is like a, a, a tangerine.
- 1:01:30Is that the official color of Honda Marigold?
- 1:01:34The only thing I like about this are the rear taillights.
- 1:01:37I actually kind of like that, but to your point, it looked like they're off of
- 1:01:40a, Especially the taillights are the most civic looking.
- 1:01:45I
- 1:01:45like
- 1:01:45those.
- 1:01:46I'm okay.
- 1:01:46Yeah.
- 1:01:47Yeah.
- 1:01:47I mean, I guess that's, that's a fair reason to like it.
- 1:01:49The article title said it all right.
- 1:01:51Cosplaying a civic.
- 1:01:54Here's the thing, right?
- 1:01:55I'm from the VW world.
- 1:01:56I'm a dubber through and through.
- 1:01:58Call me a boomer.
- 1:01:59I don't care.
- 1:01:59I grew up in a different era.
- 1:02:01Mark two GTI is freaking awesome, right?
- 1:02:03And when you see one, you go, that's cool.
- 1:02:06Those cars were just, they were bad ass.
- 1:02:08They were hella dope.
- 1:02:09The Subaru's had their time too, where in the early days of like
- 1:02:12Colin McRae rally and things like that, those early Imprezas, the
- 1:02:1522B, you know, those kinds of cars.
- 1:02:17They're amazing and they have a cult following, but just like the
- 1:02:21Volkswagens, they've strayed away from the originalness, the uniqueness,
- 1:02:26and that grassroots enthusiasm and the people that are behind it.
- 1:02:30And so yes, your point, this is a big old bloaty sedan and it's kind of man.
- 1:02:34The, the specs suck.
- 1:02:36It's three extra horsepower for the previous one.
- 1:02:38Kudos.
- 1:02:39It's got a six feet manual.
- 1:02:41God bless Subaru for keeping the manual around.
- 1:02:43I gotta give 'em props for that.
- 1:02:44Go back to your roots.
- 1:02:46Give us another 22 B.
- 1:02:47Give us something that we, that we want, that we'd be interested in.
- 1:02:51I mean, granted, I, I don't want a flat four, but that's
- 1:02:54discussion for another day.
- 1:02:55I just think this is the wrong direction.
- 1:02:57I mean, I do appreciate how the Japanese auto manufacturers have just
- 1:03:00like noted out of the horsepower wars.
- 1:03:03So we're just like, no, it's, it's good.
- 1:03:05It has, it's like Rolls Royce power is sufficient.
- 1:03:08I don't know.
- 1:03:08I mean, I guess because Lexus gave everything a really big grill, they
- 1:03:12need a hood scoop to look aggressive.
- 1:03:14I don't, I don't know.
- 1:03:16They need to put the hood scoop in because then you wouldn't
- 1:03:19discern this from the legacy.
- 1:03:20If you're, if you're a, if you're a soccer dad.
- 1:03:23In the Northeast and you make whatever 70, 80 grand a year, you're going to buy an
- 1:03:30outback.
- 1:03:30You're not going to buy this thing.
- 1:03:32I know a lot of guys that have bought these things.
- 1:03:34They've been horrible for a long time, right?
- 1:03:36I mean, that wasn't one or two generations ago.
- 1:03:38These platforms have been bloated and in tough for a little while now.
- 1:03:41Yeah.
- 1:03:42They'll get a non STI WRX.
- 1:03:44Why?
- 1:03:46Cause it's.
- 1:03:46Better than the Outback legacy?
- 1:03:48I don't know.
- 1:03:49I mean, I'm struggling here rather have I just, I rather call or a
- 1:03:51Malibu,
- 1:03:51I think
- 1:03:52at this point, no,
- 1:03:53. I work, I work, I work with these guys and they're, they're
- 1:03:56all in Rochester, New York.
- 1:03:57They all drive Subarus, you know, in case they're listening to this.
- 1:04:00I love you all.
- 1:04:01I don't know why you make their car choices that you do, but
- 1:04:03they will probably buy this.
- 1:04:04What Mark's saying is you live in a place that snows by an Audi, get on with it.
- 1:04:11Speaking of, you know, Asian cars and the Asian market and whatnot, another
- 1:04:15brand that we just don't talk about because they haven't produced anything
- 1:04:18that really gets us excited in a long time is Hyundai and Kia, right?
- 1:04:23They're both the same company for the folks that don't know.
- 1:04:25It's the same company, different badges.
- 1:04:27I happened to see a brand new Tucson on the road the other day.
- 1:04:31I know this is not the kind of car we generally talk about on the
- 1:04:33show, but like conversation street on the grand tour, we want to talk
- 1:04:37about like the Dacia of the U.
- 1:04:39S.
- 1:04:39So we have the Hyundai Tucson.
- 1:04:41First, I thought it was a Mach E and I got super excited and then I
- 1:04:44realized actually the back is even more aggressive than the Mach E and I like it.
- 1:04:50I like those lights.
- 1:04:51I like those, you know, carved in three LEDs on each side.
- 1:04:54I thought it was really cool and I'm in traffic with it.
- 1:04:56I was in a different lane, so I pulled ahead.
- 1:04:58I got to see the front of it.
- 1:04:59I hadn't seen the side yet.
- 1:05:00So I saw the front of it and it has these really interesting LED pyramid lights.
- 1:05:04I'll be it's super expensive because it feels like it's like a 50 pieces
- 1:05:09of Lego that you got to put together.
- 1:05:10If you break one of them, the whole thing has to come apart,
- 1:05:13but it looked really cool.
- 1:05:14It was like, this is kind of futuristic, really kind of angular and whatnot.
- 1:05:18And then I saw the silhouette.
- 1:05:20And oh my God, who the hell designed this?
- 1:05:24Were they from the original Star Fox team from like the SNES days?
- 1:05:28Cause it is all polygons and like weird angles.
- 1:05:31Like it looks like it's already been in a digital accident on Forza.
- 1:05:35Like, I don't understand the design of this car.
- 1:05:39Like it makes.
- 1:05:40Was transposed
- 1:05:41into two dimensions and then brought back into the real world.
- 1:05:44Oh,
- 1:05:45somebody did like a pinch on their phone.
- 1:05:47Like when they were designing this, it makes no sense at all when you see it in
- 1:05:52profile, but from the front and from the back, you're like, that's pretty cool.
- 1:05:55But what really took it home for me, please somebody explain it to me.
- 1:05:59What's up with the new Kia logo.
- 1:06:02I've not seen it's this wacko kind of K and it looks like a backwards N
- 1:06:08and I thought it was like something from like Mass Effect where it's like
- 1:06:11N seven or you know, like, like that whole thing, like the Normandy, but
- 1:06:15instead they've redesigned their logo too, to go with this whole angular thing
- 1:06:19they have going on with the Tucson.
- 1:06:21And now I've seen it on the latest like version of the Telluride
- 1:06:24other models that they have.
- 1:06:25And I'm like.
- 1:06:27I just pulled up the pictures of the Nutella ride.
- 1:06:29Holy shit.
- 1:06:30That's polarizing.
- 1:06:32Um,
- 1:06:35I mean, you know, you got to give them credit since when
- 1:06:37did automakers get so edgy?
- 1:06:39It's like they're in a competition with each other.
- 1:06:41I'm going
- 1:06:42to make a grill bigger than you.
- 1:06:43I'm going to make a logo that looks like a throwing star weapon.
- 1:06:46Those Kia and Hyundai, like that Telluride, those Tucson's like, if
- 1:06:50you've got a three, four year old kid, you're picking up from your little
- 1:06:53preschool, man, you see a ton of those.
- 1:06:56And I've talked to some people, like they were selling those at MSRP a
- 1:07:01year or two ago before COVID before the chip shortage, where it was like.
- 1:07:06No, I'm saying before because chips, they were selling those
- 1:07:08cars at MSRP without discount.
- 1:07:11People were buying them like, like they were so popular in that parent crowd.
- 1:07:16People, they were all
- 1:07:16powered by 1.
- 1:07:176 liter turbos copying after mini Cooper, which I didn't understand.
- 1:07:21We actually went and test drove one when we were shopping around.
- 1:07:23We were, when we got the Pacifica instead and.
- 1:07:26I was surprised how peppy it was for as big as the cars are, but I'm still
- 1:07:30like, I don't know, longevity of a high, strong four cylinder turbo in a vehicle
- 1:07:35that big, just, ah, no, thank you.
- 1:07:37I'll take my Torkums.
- 1:07:39Yeah.
- 1:07:40So I would clarify an earlier statement.
- 1:07:42You made it at the very beginning that there's nothing exciting coming
- 1:07:45out of Hyundai slash Kia, whatever.
- 1:07:48I don't think that's true.
- 1:07:48Besides the
- 1:07:49Stinger, of course,
- 1:07:50fine.
- 1:07:51But Hyundai, we talked about already a while ago, their electric vehicle.
- 1:07:55Brand ionique.
- 1:07:57They actually have some pretty cool cars in that lineup that are coming out.
- 1:08:00Well, when, when the press releases come out, we're going to talk about them
- 1:08:03because we want to address and talk more about JDMs and the Asian market as well.
- 1:08:08And the cars that they're developing.
- 1:08:09It's just, they got, they got to get your attention, right?
- 1:08:12Well, I mean,
- 1:08:12I mean, we have the Ioniq 5.
- 1:08:15We had a member have a sighting of one that was in camouflage, and
- 1:08:21we're pretty sure that's right.
- 1:08:22It was the Ioniq
- 1:08:235.
- 1:08:24So, and it's on our Instagram, so you can go back and check it out.
- 1:08:27So that car is supposed to be coming into production here, here soon.
- 1:08:31We'll follow up on that.
- 1:08:32And obviously they did the Only EV, which we thought was really cool, that retro,
- 1:08:36uh, restomod that they, they put together.
- 1:08:38So we'll see what happens.
- 1:08:39And you're right.
- 1:08:40The stinger is pretty cool.
- 1:08:41I wish that car had a manual.
- 1:08:42I'd love to see a new Genesis come out like something different.
- 1:08:45That three eight Genesis, the last one they had, though, it was a bit bloaty.
- 1:08:49They were a lot of fun on track.
- 1:08:51I got to ride in one and I thought that was fantastic.
- 1:08:53And I mentioned on a previous episode, I got to coach in a Veloster N,
- 1:08:58which was one of the cars on my list.
- 1:08:59Oddly enough that I wanted to ride in and I wanted to coach
- 1:09:02in and I've said it before.
- 1:09:04It's the best GTI that was ever built in Korea.
- 1:09:06It's a fantastic car overall.
- 1:09:08So hats off to Hyundai.
- 1:09:10I just feel like they're the dark horse right now.
- 1:09:12A little bit understated.
- 1:09:14You know, we need something flashy.
- 1:09:15I just think it would be cool.
- 1:09:16Hyundai supercar, right?
- 1:09:16Or Hyundai super EV or something like that.
- 1:09:19Really kind of bust the news out and be at the front page and not just.
- 1:09:22I think we got to move on a little bit to Brad's favorite section, Lost
- 1:09:27and Found, which also encompasses all of our historical stuff.
- 1:09:31And I have to start this month off with just something that boggles my mind.
- 1:09:36And I've said this a million times, the people on Bring a Trailer, God bless
- 1:09:39all of you, you have lost your minds.
- 1:09:41And the proof I have,
- 1:09:44you're part of the problem
- 1:09:46to back that statement up is a mystic magenta metallic geo Metro convertible
- 1:09:53with 43, 000 miles selling for 4, 300.
- 1:09:57I wouldn't give you 43 bucks for that car.
- 1:10:00My budget is 50 for a geometric convertible.
- 1:10:02We still want one.
- 1:10:03So this I tell you is living proof.
- 1:10:06trailer is insane.
- 1:10:07And you know that somebody will end up bringing that to like
- 1:10:11trump car lemons or something
- 1:10:13being like, no, no, it was cheap.
- 1:10:14I swear.
- 1:10:14I swear.
- 1:10:16Well, horrible.
- 1:10:19We are still trying to find one in that color.
- 1:10:22For a really good price as a gift for one of our members who is dying to get one.
- 1:10:26But when I saw that come up, I was like, ah, I've got a bid on it.
- 1:10:30No, no, no.
- 1:10:31I'm not going into this insanity.
- 1:10:33You went all the way up to 44, but then, then you got 52
- 1:10:37was as far as I was going on the reserve.
- 1:10:40That was it.
- 1:10:41In addition to that, a car that we have to add to our ugly cars list.
- 1:10:45This one I didn't know about came across my desk from I believe garage ride or
- 1:10:49drive tribe or one of those this month, America took a stab at the multiple.
- 1:10:56That's a Fiat, by the way, one of the ugliest Fiat's ever built one of the
- 1:10:59ugliest cars of all time, like top five ugly cars with the Saturn CV one.
- 1:11:05Now I'm sure you guys looked at this article.
- 1:11:08And there's something I really want to hone in on, but I want to get
- 1:11:10your gut reactions on this first.
- 1:11:12Uh, it looks like something that they would have put in
- 1:11:15a future movie in the 90s.
- 1:11:18Like what was the one where Sylvester Stallone, they brought
- 1:11:20him back to fight Wesley Snipes.
- 1:11:23Demolition Man.
- 1:11:24Yes, this is what they would drive in Demolition Man.
- 1:11:27Right here.
- 1:11:27This is, this is it.
- 1:11:28Everybody was driving around in one of them.
- 1:11:30No airbags, all foam.
- 1:11:32Exactly.
- 1:11:33Uh, is vomiting still on the table?
- 1:11:37Looks like somebody already vomited on it.
- 1:11:39The
- 1:11:39color is atrocious.
- 1:11:41I mean, that's the one thing about cars.
- 1:11:42Colors make a big difference, especially if you're trying to
- 1:11:45introduce something radically different.
- 1:11:48I mean, stick with a Navy blue or black or gray, you know, something a
- 1:11:51little dude or go, go straight, go red.
- 1:11:54Right.
- 1:11:55Go copper, obviously, but not puke or clean corn.
- 1:12:00Marigold.
- 1:12:01This is Saturn through and through.
- 1:12:03Isn't it, though?
- 1:12:04I'm liking the under hood, though.
- 1:12:06That's what got me.
- 1:12:07What are all these knobs?
- 1:12:08Is this like the Fisher Price Playmobil?
- 1:12:10Like, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop.
- 1:12:12And it's going to do, like, lights and sounds?
- 1:12:15It's the cozy coop.
- 1:12:16Your three year old can work on this thing.
- 1:12:19It is absolutely nutty.
- 1:12:21Like I've never seen an engine compartment so clean.
- 1:12:24Even show cars aren't as clean as this.
- 1:12:27But yes, with all these colors and knobs, I was like, how do you work on this?
- 1:12:31And how long does it take to get to the actual motor?
- 1:12:35Are these like fluids?
- 1:12:37Like, is that what needs to be like six?
- 1:12:39Knobs are on the side, like I get the one on the other.
- 1:12:41On the left is a battery negative and positive sign, but what
- 1:12:44the hell?
- 1:12:45I have no idea.
- 1:12:45The hell is the rest of this . You know what?
- 1:12:48We're gonna leave that.
- 1:12:49It
- 1:12:49looks like, it looks like the Fisher Price car.
- 1:12:50We definitely have to leave this up to the audience's imagination and their comments.
- 1:12:55So let us know what you think about the CV one and where it
- 1:12:59ranks on our ugly car list.
- 1:13:01A couple other pieces of historical news.
- 1:13:03This is what's mind blowing about this particular barn.
- 1:13:05Find it's 175 cars.
- 1:13:08And it was found in London.
- 1:13:10Now, Mark, you've been to London many times.
- 1:13:13What about
- 1:13:14this doesn't compute?
- 1:13:15I
- 1:13:15never saw a barn.
- 1:13:18I can't recall a barn.
- 1:13:20You know, I could think maybe if it was like an abandoned disused church,
- 1:13:25like a lot of time, the, you know, church infrastructure falls into disuse.
- 1:13:28You could park 175 cars and more of those.
- 1:13:30No, no barns, no barns that I can recall.
- 1:13:32Yeah.
- 1:13:33And my second question was, where are you going to hide?
- 1:13:3575 cars in London, that's not in a parking garage
- 1:13:38or one of the old warehouses.
- 1:13:39I mean, there's so much, just like every city, so much gentrification as they
- 1:13:43turn the old warehouse districts into the coolest place to live or eat or whatever.
- 1:13:48As soon as they get the asbestos out of there, I would imagine
- 1:13:51it was probably some warehouse.
- 1:13:52I mean, if you look at the video, there's some really cool cars in there.
- 1:13:54It's a mixture of, you know, classic British stuff, MGs, minis, Fiat's
- 1:13:58there's beetles in their type two buses.
- 1:14:00There's some actual like W one 23 Mercedes station wagons, stuff like that.
- 1:14:05I mean, it's an interesting assortment.
- 1:14:07I wouldn't say they're really classics or anything of super high value, unless, you
- 1:14:13know, maybe there's a Cooper works, maybe in there with low mileage or, you know,
- 1:14:16a really early beetle or something like that, I just was kind of perplexed when I
- 1:14:20heard 175 cars basically hidden in London, I was like, how the hell do you do that?
- 1:14:24Not so hidden.
- 1:14:26And a large collection of vehicles as our friends up British Columbia,
- 1:14:31up on the transatlantic highway, the boys from rust valley restorers.
- 1:14:34I don't know what's going on because as we pushed on our Instagram a while
- 1:14:38back, season three was supposed to hit.
- 1:14:41And every time I look on Amazon, and I look on Netflix, and I look
- 1:14:44in other places, we can't get it.
- 1:14:46History Channel's not covering it.
- 1:14:47I know it was produced by History Channel in Canada.
- 1:14:50We seem to always get the previous seasons a little bit
- 1:14:53late, and I was okay with that.
- 1:14:54I've been following the show for a while, and I really do enjoy it.
- 1:14:57There's this article that came across my desk that they're
- 1:15:00going to be auctioning off.
- 1:15:02All the cars on the property and they actually tried to sell all the
- 1:15:05cars and the property in one go.
- 1:15:08And I'm like, well, that's really interesting.
- 1:15:10And it says deeper in the article that this auction is going to happen
- 1:15:14during season four of the show.
- 1:15:16So I'm like, wait, what?
- 1:15:18Excuse me.
- 1:15:19So I'm a little confused on how this is working.
- 1:15:21I want to see what happened in season three.
- 1:15:22At this point, it was supposed to be picked up by Amazon, uh, transferring
- 1:15:26over from Netflix, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:15:27So I'm a little disappointed again, one of my top five restoration shows.
- 1:15:31I feel really bad if this is a result of like COVID or something like that, where
- 1:15:36maybe they've, they've really had to thin the herd, you know, things like that.
- 1:15:39I really thought the premise of this show was raw and it was very genuine.
- 1:15:44I mean, a little bit produced, but I liked it.
- 1:15:46It was different than everything else.
- 1:15:47It was different than counting cars and all these other things on TV
- 1:15:50because chips
- 1:15:52on all these cars from the sixties.
- 1:15:58I haven't checked out the show, but your impassioned pitch for
- 1:16:03the show tells me that I have a couple of seasons to check out.
- 1:16:06It sounds pretty cool.
- 1:16:07I mean, is it worth going up there to try and participate in the auction?
- 1:16:10Actually done online.
- 1:16:11And then they are talking about international bidders.
- 1:16:14There's no reserve on any of the cars and its highest bidder takes
- 1:16:17whatever vehicle they're bidding on.
- 1:16:19And I'm like, That's pretty cool.
- 1:16:20Now, granted of those cars, it's going to be all the one and what
- 1:16:24they call the field of dreams.
- 1:16:25So these are all project cars and they go up and down the
- 1:16:28project field all the time.
- 1:16:29There's some really cool stuff out there.
- 1:16:31They did an episode where they restored an Alpine sunbeam and they
- 1:16:34did a Ford Capri V six swap on it.
- 1:16:36Stuff like that.
- 1:16:37There's some really neat vehicles out there that could turn into
- 1:16:40something else that's really cool.
- 1:16:42If you're into restoration and Resto mods.
- 1:16:44A lot of muscle cars, a lot of Canadian versions of popular American
- 1:16:49muscle cars, and I highlight some of those in the articles when I
- 1:16:52reviewed the previous seasons.
- 1:16:54So if you haven't checked out Rust Valley Restorers, I highly recommend it.
- 1:16:57I recommend it to you, Mark, as well, if you've got some extra cycles to burn.
- 1:17:00And I know Tanya's watched the show as well.
- 1:17:02Yes, I very much enjoyed it.
- 1:17:04And in an effort to help them as a plug, you can visit their
- 1:17:08website at rust bros, rustos.
- 1:17:11com.
- 1:17:11And you can actually see a lot of the cars that they have for sale.
- 1:17:14Currently right now, they've got photographs of a bunch of them,
- 1:17:17but not photographs of all of them because they have a lot of cars
- 1:17:20there.
- 1:17:21You have it switching to other historical stuff, something I thought was kind
- 1:17:24of fun, five obsolete features.
- 1:17:28In vehicles and the last cars to have them.
- 1:17:31So I'm going to run through these real quick, just for our listeners.
- 1:17:33And if you're watching the behind the scenes video of the episode, you get to
- 1:17:36see Tanya and Mark's reaction to this.
- 1:17:38Did you know, do you know what the last car was to have a cassette player?
- 1:17:43My car?
- 1:17:45Yeah.
- 1:17:45Right.
- 1:17:46Well, it would have to be a car after 2005.
- 1:17:50Yes.
- 1:17:50Because your car is a 2005 and it has a cassette player.
- 1:17:54All right.
- 1:17:54I'm not going to make you guys guess.
- 1:17:562010 Lexus SC430 still came with the cassette player.
- 1:18:01It's the last car to have one.
- 1:18:04That's pretty bold.
- 1:18:05I would not
- 1:18:05have said
- 1:18:05Lexus.
- 1:18:06Except as an SC430, maybe the ugliest car ever made.
- 1:18:10I mean, it's on our list.
- 1:18:12That's for sure.
- 1:18:14You know, we need to put that list on our website.
- 1:18:16Like the people could just go to, and we need to change it.
- 1:18:18Like the leaderboard.
- 1:18:19Do your own version of a cool wall.
- 1:18:21You
- 1:18:21know, yeah, we're, I think we're going to do that.
- 1:18:23We can make that happen.
- 1:18:24All right.
- 1:18:24Last car to have pop up headlights.
- 1:18:27It's actually a tie.
- 1:18:27Pop up headlights.
- 1:18:29Cause you know, pop up headlights are legit.
- 1:18:31Cool.
- 1:18:31Right.
- 1:18:32Remember when they were,
- 1:18:33I can't think of anything right now.
- 1:18:35My head is just like Miata, Miata, Miata.
- 1:18:37So what was that for the C5 that still had pop up headlines?
- 1:18:40Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
- 1:18:41It is the C5 Corvette.
- 1:18:43That is the last car to have pop up headlights outside of the Lotus Esprit.
- 1:18:47I feel like it was too obvious.
- 1:18:492000, 2004 was the last one.
- 1:18:51All right.
- 1:18:52The last vehicle to have a carburetor,
- 1:18:54car,
- 1:18:55truck, help me out.
- 1:18:56Doesn't matter all the above.
- 1:18:58This one's a tough one.
- 1:18:58Cause you're really reaching back.
- 1:19:00Carburetors are pretty paleozoic at this point.
- 1:19:03I mean, the late 1970s,
- 1:19:06the five liter Mustang had a carburetor until like 86 or 85 where they
- 1:19:10finally went into fuel injection.
- 1:19:12So you're looking, what would have had a carburetor after that?
- 1:19:16All right.
- 1:19:16You ready?
- 1:19:17Yeah,
- 1:19:18Chevy square body.
- 1:19:18Well, those still got, those still got carburetors.
- 1:19:22Everybody converts them back to carburetors actually from the factory with
- 1:19:26a carburetor, the 1994 is Zuzu pickup.
- 1:19:30Ah, I knew it was going to be something like that.
- 1:19:32Damn it.
- 1:19:32All right.
- 1:19:33Tanya is going to love this next one.
- 1:19:35The last car to have a front bench seat.
- 1:19:39This is one of her favorite cars.
- 1:19:41It's going to be a Buick.
- 1:19:42It's going to be a Buick.
- 1:19:45No, no, the real question, I've never said, I've never said that about a Buick.
- 1:19:50No, the real question is, if by favorite cars, he means cars that I hate.
- 1:19:56Yes, a hundred percent.
- 1:19:57Because if it's cars that I hate, then it's got to be either an Impala.
- 1:20:03Or or a
- 1:20:04Malibu,
- 1:20:06but you're basically the
- 1:20:07same car.
- 1:20:09So I'm at a loss right now.
- 1:20:12And get this.
- 1:20:12This is pretty recent.
- 1:20:13It is.
- 1:20:13In
- 1:20:14fact,
- 1:20:14the 2013 Chevrolet Impala was the last vehicle to have a front bench seat.
- 1:20:21Rental turds of rental turds.
- 1:20:23I've
- 1:20:23driven that
- 1:20:24turd, I think.
- 1:20:26All right.
- 1:20:26Now for the bonus, the bonus.
- 1:20:28This is a tough one.
- 1:20:29The bonus.
- 1:20:30The last car to be produced.
- 1:20:33I can't even get this out.
- 1:20:35The last car to be produced with a hand crank start.
- 1:20:39We know the Landy had one.
- 1:20:42That's true.
- 1:20:42That was in the seventies though.
- 1:20:44And Matt reminds us constantly of the ultimate party trick is
- 1:20:46hand starting his Land Rover.
- 1:20:47This is a tough one.
- 1:20:48I can't, I can't think of anything after the 70s that would have, I
- 1:20:52mean, it's probably, it's probably some, for a practical reason,
- 1:20:55some kind of work vehicle where they maybe they wanted to have.
- 1:20:58You know,
- 1:20:58I, I would consider this a work vehicle.
- 1:21:00It's very utilitarian.
- 1:21:02I would almost say it's an SUV.
- 1:21:04I'll give Mark a hint because I've
- 1:21:06looked ahead because I had no idea.
- 1:21:07I was good.
- 1:21:08I didn't, I didn't.
- 1:21:09Think outside the country,
- 1:21:12outside the country,
- 1:21:13outside our country.
- 1:21:16That's why this was the bonus question.
- 1:21:17You're going to give me a global challenge.
- 1:21:19Oh, it's hard.
- 1:21:22Like a Toyota Helix or something,
- 1:21:24you know, that's the right kind of body style, but I won't, I won't torture
- 1:21:27you anymore because even our, even our listeners are probably going,
- 1:21:29Oh my God, get it over with already from the Russian block, the 1998.
- 1:21:35Lada Niva still had a crank start.
- 1:21:39Can you believe that?
- 1:21:39Of course a Lada.
- 1:21:40Of course a Lada had a crank
- 1:21:42start.
- 1:21:43Because Lada.
- 1:21:43That's cheating.
- 1:21:44You can't say
- 1:21:44communist cars.
- 1:21:46Because chips.
- 1:21:47That car does not need chips.
- 1:21:49It just has a crank start.
- 1:21:50Yeah, there's
- 1:21:51no There's no chips.
- 1:21:53Oddly enough.
- 1:21:53It runs
- 1:21:53on chips.
- 1:21:54It's got a crank start but has fuel injection.
- 1:21:56So like wrap your head around that one for a second.
- 1:22:00In other historical news, I just gotta read this.
- 1:22:04We don't even need to dive into it.
- 1:22:06Apparently, We have finally stopped using leaded fuel.
- 1:22:10Yes.
- 1:22:11Let me repeat that.
- 1:22:11We have finally stopped using leaded fuel.
- 1:22:14Algeria has used up their last bit of stockpile in 2021.
- 1:22:19I posted this and talked about it with some of our petrol heads here
- 1:22:23at GTM and they were laughing saying that according to some SCCA racers,
- 1:22:28Summit Point has about 5, 000 gallons of leaded 110 octane underground.
- 1:22:33That's still available for you.
- 1:22:35So maybe we're not quite done with leaded fuel yet, but I just
- 1:22:39wanted to throw that out there.
- 1:22:40That's just, what were they putting it in?
- 1:22:42Like,
- 1:22:42I don't know what runs on leaded fuel anymore.
- 1:22:45I mean, who shows up to the track with like a Hudson Hornet?
- 1:22:47You know, I don't know.
- 1:22:48I don't know.
- 1:22:48I don't get it at any rate.
- 1:22:50So switching gears, we don't talk about Swedish cars very often.
- 1:22:53No, we do not.
- 1:22:55However, who knew, although now is not the right time to be going there, but
- 1:23:00maybe in like 10 years, if you find yourself in Sturgis, South Dakota,
- 1:23:04among having bike rallies and whatnot, there is apparently a Saab heritage car
- 1:23:11museum that has an extensive collection of immaculately kept classic Saabs.
- 1:23:17And one Fiat.
- 1:23:18And apparently one Fiat.
- 1:23:20So I looked through these pictures.
- 1:23:22This is really cool.
- 1:23:23I also feel like the pictures did the museum a disservice because now
- 1:23:27I don't need to go there because I've kind of seen everything.
- 1:23:30But I also have a bigger question that needs to be answered.
- 1:23:34If this is a Saab museum, which I'm totally okay with, I mean,
- 1:23:37everybody's got their thing.
- 1:23:38Where are the jets?
- 1:23:41Well, they were born from jets.
- 1:23:43What does that mean, exactly?
- 1:23:46It's a sub car museum.
- 1:23:48Oh, okay, okay.
- 1:23:50Now we're gonna qualify it.
- 1:23:52Yeah.
- 1:23:52I mean, I'm just, like, South Dakota of all places, but hey.
- 1:23:57Swedish migrants, I guess, in that area?
- 1:24:00I don't know.
- 1:24:01An enthusiast.
- 1:24:03There was an enthusiast and he collected all these cars.
- 1:24:06Apparently they all run.
- 1:24:07It's a very large assortment.
- 1:24:08I'm sure the two stroke ones are very difficult to get
- 1:24:10started up there when it's cold.
- 1:24:12I looked at all the pictures and some of them definitely rank
- 1:24:16on my ugly car list for sure.
- 1:24:17Or, or the uncool wall, let's call it that.
- 1:24:20I'm proud of people that do stuff like this.
- 1:24:22I mean, go for it.
- 1:24:23I mean, do your passion and if you can get them for pennies on the dollar, so be it.
- 1:24:27And I'm, I'm happy that they all run and I'm, hopefully they're being driven.
- 1:24:30The Fiat still confuses me, although I still think that's the
- 1:24:33prettiest car in that whole museum.
- 1:24:35I'm the same way.
- 1:24:35I feel like particularly in this time of change with electric.
- 1:24:40And I feel like when we were younger, you know, growing up
- 1:24:43in the nineties or whatever, it was more like a music culture.
- 1:24:45Like if you liked this car, then you didn't like that car.
- 1:24:48I feel like a more broadly inclusive automotive enthusiast culture is kind
- 1:24:52of what we need if we want this hobby to survive, so yeah, man, you do.
- 1:24:57You very proud of that guy.
- 1:25:01Speaking of incredible feats and being proud of something, what
- 1:25:04about a world record holding Volvo?
- 1:25:07And what do I mean by that?
- 1:25:08Gentleman by the name of Gordon, who has long passed away, his
- 1:25:11Volvo continues to live on.
- 1:25:12I think we talked about this car on a previous episode.
- 1:25:15The odometer has now turned over 3 million.
- 1:25:19Miles.
- 1:25:20It is a P 1800 as seen in the original saint.
- 1:25:23Uh, for those of you that are old enough to remember that show,
- 1:25:26not the movie with Val Kilmer.
- 1:25:27I think this is epic.
- 1:25:28This is really cool to see a piece of European engineering still on the road,
- 1:25:33you know, 65 years later, let's call it.
- 1:25:36And with that many miles on the clock, still being enjoyed, still
- 1:25:39being driven, being maintained.
- 1:25:40And I think what it is above all, outside of being record breaking,
- 1:25:44whatnot is a testament to Maintenance.
- 1:25:47If you do your regular maintenance intervals, you keep track of things
- 1:25:51and you don't let cars sit, then they will literally run forever.
- 1:25:55It says that it has the original engine intact at 3 million miles.
- 1:26:00Caveat, it did have two engine rebuilds across 3 million miles and two paint jobs.
- 1:26:05Otherwise, the car is original.
- 1:26:07Can you imagine?
- 1:26:07You know, there's that
- 1:26:08Greek, I don't know what you want to call it, legend story, the ship of Theseus.
- 1:26:13Yes, Volvo is definitely the ship is definitely the ship of these years.
- 1:26:18There ever was one.
- 1:26:19Everything has been replaced by maybe not everything.
- 1:26:22The enemy in that situation has to be rust,
- 1:26:25right?
- 1:26:26Like you can fix things that break.
- 1:26:28Fine, but like preventing the car from completely falling apart, that has to
- 1:26:33take a lot of consistent diligence in regards to how the car is maintained.
- 1:26:37It reminds me of cars that I've seen get sold by people or be abandoned by
- 1:26:43people where it's like, I didn't want to put the money in it to keep it going.
- 1:26:46And it was something dumb, like, Oh, I needed to change the lock cylinder.
- 1:26:50I need to change the spark plugs.
- 1:26:51And I just decided I'm going to go buy a new car.
- 1:26:53And I feel for those cars.
- 1:26:55Maybe I'm, I'm in passion for these.
- 1:26:57inanimate objects, right?
- 1:26:58I, I, I personify them in some way.
- 1:27:01It's just like, if you do that little bit of maintenance, you put up that
- 1:27:04little bit of money up front, how many more miles could you have gone?
- 1:27:07How, how much longer could you have stretched your dollar?
- 1:27:10This Volvo owes Gordon, even though he's passed away, it
- 1:27:13owes him nothing at this point.
- 1:27:15I mean, can you imagine buying this car new in the 1960s and
- 1:27:19it's still on the road today?
- 1:27:20Day
- 1:27:21for $4,150 was the sticker price.
- 1:27:27Convert that to today's dollars.
- 1:27:28That was a 1966 doesn't, that was a fair chunk of change.
- 1:27:32It doesn't matter.
- 1:27:34It went over 3 million miles.
- 1:27:36I don't care if it was a 20 grand car.
- 1:27:38I mean that like holy moly.
- 1:27:40And it's probably worth more than what's been sunk into it now, because it's
- 1:27:44still a running driving P1800, which they didn't make a ton of those cars.
- 1:27:49Anyway, that was the sporty two door Volvo sports coupe, beautiful car.
- 1:27:54I really liked those.
- 1:27:55I I'd love to drive one.
- 1:27:56If somebody's got that one out there, I'd love to get the behind the wheel
- 1:27:59of yet another one of my heroes and be completely disappointed.
- 1:28:03But that's not the point.
- 1:28:04It's just, it's a testament to doing the maintenance, putting in just a little
- 1:28:08bit of effort and taking care of cars.
- 1:28:10And not abusing them.
- 1:28:12They're not appliances.
- 1:28:13They'll they'll last you forever.
- 1:28:15Yeah.
- 1:28:15That's 40, 000 in current value.
- 1:28:18I just jumped on the, uh, CPI inflation calculator.
- 1:28:22That's not bad.
- 1:28:233 million miles for 40 grand in 1966,
- 1:28:26Mark, we got to wrap up this because chips
- 1:28:29because chips, sure.
- 1:28:30Let's EVs.
- 1:28:32So I don't know, maybe not.
- 1:28:34I guess technically it happened at the end of August, but when
- 1:28:36I was kind of going through the.
- 1:28:37The topic list, I thought it was worth mentioning TSMC, which is the world's
- 1:28:42probably largest Silicon foundry.
- 1:28:44They announced a price increase of 20 percent and it just goes to show kind
- 1:28:49of the longevity of this challenge, your more profitable devices, the
- 1:28:54more profitable uses of that Silicon are going to absorb that 20%.
- 1:29:00And keep on chugging, right?
- 1:29:01Your iPhones, your consumer graphics cards, you know, you're like, whatever,
- 1:29:06those kinds of things that have, you know, your higher retail margins, where
- 1:29:10in the automobile world, where they're trying to buy in bulk, they're trying
- 1:29:13to buy a discount, they're trying, you know, they operate a much lower margins.
- 1:29:16It just puts them at the back of the line.
- 1:29:18They don't have the space.
- 1:29:19To so easily absorb that kind of price increase.
- 1:29:23And, and it does cause some broader concerns around the transitory nature
- 1:29:28of the inflation that we've been going through for the last several months.
- 1:29:31But just thought it was worth noting.
- 1:29:32It's certainly newsworthy.
- 1:29:34It's out there.
- 1:29:34I mean, there's lots of other kind of, if you want to look at the topic
- 1:29:37a little more broadly, there is certainly look at government investment
- 1:29:41in regards to opening some of these foundries in the United States.
- 1:29:44It's billions and billions of investment.
- 1:29:46There's certainly been a push in the COVID area to get our supply chain a
- 1:29:51little more consolidated and to move some of these foundries back into the
- 1:29:54United States, now that they're all mostly automated anyway, the labor costs
- 1:29:57and things that originally moved them over there aren't as big of a deal.
- 1:30:01It's certainly is going to impact the auto industry.
- 1:30:03Yeah.
- 1:30:04And you bring up a really good point.
- 1:30:05And it's also why we heard during this month that the iPhone 13 is finally
- 1:30:09debuting and yet there's oceans of F 150s and Silverados that are sitting
- 1:30:15unfinished because they can't get chips.
- 1:30:17So you're right.
- 1:30:18They're going to prioritize the profit margins before they prioritize,
- 1:30:21you know, sometimes the need.
- 1:30:22That's a little different.
- 1:30:23Like Apple was really smart in consolidating their supply chain.
- 1:30:28Tim Cook is not Steve Jobs.
- 1:30:29He's not a product guy, but he is a supply chain guy.
- 1:30:32And so, you know, they did the acquisitions they needed to do.
- 1:30:36And as they moved into ARM, they make all their own chips.
- 1:30:38They're not licensing anything from Qualcomm or whatever, like everybody else.
- 1:30:42And they're even getting into, you know, their own radios and stuff now.
- 1:30:45So their consolidated supply chain has really insulated them from
- 1:30:49that more broadly and the high margins of their devices, obviously.
- 1:30:52That's actually a great segue into our EV section, where Tanya is
- 1:30:55going to run us through some new concepts and some upcoming news
- 1:30:59on all the EVs that are coming out here in the next couple of years.
- 1:31:01So I think we've talked on and off about Rivian, if everyone recalls,
- 1:31:05uh, that EV automaker deposit on
- 1:31:09one of those years ago, did you,
- 1:31:12well, you're in luck because they finally rolled off their first
- 1:31:17production vehicle, first customer sale.
- 1:31:20And that puts them at the first electric pickup truck, um, it's unclear, you
- 1:31:27know, how many sales orders they actually have fulfilled and how many
- 1:31:31more they're going to make because chips, but nonetheless, they can claim
- 1:31:36that they are the first ones to roll.
- 1:31:39An electric pickup truck off the line, and I've always liked the look of the Rivian.
- 1:31:43I'm not a pickup truck person.
- 1:31:45Most people know that.
- 1:31:46Does not fit my hashtag, the lifestyle because it maintains a
- 1:31:51pickup truck look, and it's a little bit futuristic, but not overly.
- 1:31:56I don't mind it.
- 1:31:57It's got that EV vibe.
- 1:31:59Unlike the goldeneye and 64 cyber truck polygon polygon.
- 1:32:05When did you get the Goldeneye?
- 1:32:06That's amazing.
- 1:32:07Star Fox.
- 1:32:09Oh, you, you haven't seen that meme or that clip where someone
- 1:32:12actually created one inside of a Goldeneye, uh, or whatever.
- 1:32:17That's awesome.
- 1:32:19And it fits in perfectly as if it was designed to be there.
- 1:32:23Design
- 1:32:23this car.
- 1:32:24You have 12 triangles.
- 1:32:26Go, it's like, it's like an interview question that then
- 1:32:30somebody was like, that's genius.
- 1:32:32Let's let's actually build it.
- 1:32:33And you're like, no, no, this is just one of those brain teasers.
- 1:32:35We use it in interviews.
- 1:32:36No, no, no.
- 1:32:37We're doing it
- 1:32:38like animals, like make a lion out of three pieces of triangle
- 1:32:41and two squares kind of thing.
- 1:32:43And you're exactly right.
- 1:32:44That's how they designed the cyber truck.
- 1:32:45So anyway, I mean, that's the news with Rivian.
- 1:32:47So it'll be interesting to see kind of where their sales go and.
- 1:32:51And how the company bottom line gets affected by this in other
- 1:32:55news, speaking of Ruby and which I just came across this evening.
- 1:32:59So their plant is in normal Illinois where this rolled out, but I guess they also
- 1:33:04have some offices because I think their headquarters are actually in California,
- 1:33:07but there was somebody company employee test driving one in camo gear and whatnot.
- 1:33:14The incident is being reported as driver error.
- 1:33:18Oh man.
- 1:33:19And honestly, hopefully, because that's a bad look for them, as they just roll off
- 1:33:25their first production vehicles to have one be in an accident if there was any
- 1:33:28sort of, you know, self anything going on.
- 1:33:32But nonetheless, from the pictures and whatnot.
- 1:33:34The person was driving, maybe you would have needed to negotiate kind
- 1:33:37of a right hander, 90 degree ish turn, miss the turn and kind of kept going
- 1:33:42straight up the curb, up the grassy hill, through bushes into a parking lot.
- 1:33:50I call that understeer normally.
- 1:33:52At least it's got some torque, you know,
- 1:33:54all
- 1:33:55the obstacles.
- 1:33:57And then slammed into a parked Ford Explorer.
- 1:34:01At least the Ford could stop it.
- 1:34:03Which
- 1:34:04then the Ford Explorer hit a parked Mercedes that was next to it.
- 1:34:11Did the battery
- 1:34:12then burst into flame?
- 1:34:14There was no injuries, there was no flames.
- 1:34:17Actually, there was very little damage to the Rivian.
- 1:34:20There was significant, seemingly, damage to the Port Explorer.
- 1:34:24So I'm not sure, in terms of safety, what that's saying,
- 1:34:28good or bad, about the Rivian.
- 1:34:31Maybe it weighs
- 1:34:319, 000 pounds, like some of those other trucks we talked about.
- 1:34:35I mean, it's likely because a lot of EVs are just ridiculous in weight, but
- 1:34:41nonetheless, it's very unfortunate to hear that they've had their first accident.
- 1:34:44That
- 1:34:45sucks.
- 1:34:46Sorry guys.
- 1:34:47It's like the
- 1:34:47guys that bought the Hellcats and they wrecked them 10 feet from the dealership.
- 1:34:51I mean, this is like right on par.
- 1:34:52I
- 1:34:53mean, it really sounds like it.
- 1:34:55And if it was driver error, I could totally see, you know, this thing is
- 1:34:58capable of, you know, zero to 60 in less than whatever seconds that Someone
- 1:35:03just got buck wild behind the wheel and essentially lost control, which also isn't
- 1:35:07a good look for the consumer that that's a problem with all the EVs too much power.
- 1:35:13We saw that report in Europe where that Tikon or something, where
- 1:35:17he launched it up the driveway.
- 1:35:20Like that was pretty bad.
- 1:35:22His own house with this car is
- 1:35:24brilliant.
- 1:35:25Something like that.
- 1:35:26You don't have the same sensation of speed.
- 1:35:29It's a legit problem.
- 1:35:31They're super powerful and you don't have the same sensation of speed.
- 1:35:34I think the
- 1:35:35problem is, is because the torque is instantaneous rather than in a
- 1:35:40petrol engine where you build up and you can feel it, you know, where the
- 1:35:43torque curve is coming on, you know, at what RPM it's going to unload and
- 1:35:46all that with it, with the EV, it's like, it's, it's a light switch.
- 1:35:49It's all or nothing moving on to Tesla's number one rival.
- 1:35:53Yes.
- 1:35:53The Tesla fighter, if we will.
- 1:35:55So lucid air, apparently there's some articles that are saying that
- 1:35:59it is basically phenomenal to drive.
- 1:36:02I don't know, but the more impressive piece that has more recently come out is
- 1:36:08that the EPA has given the lucid air dream a 520 mile range at over a hundred miles
- 1:36:18over the model S whatever their best.
- 1:36:21Tesla version is so holy moly.
- 1:36:25That's pretty impressive.
- 1:36:26And this thing weighs like just over 5, 000 pounds.
- 1:36:29Again, not a light vehicle by any stretch of the imagination.
- 1:36:33Do you
- 1:36:33think we'd get more mileage if they made these things a little bit later?
- 1:36:37I
- 1:36:37mean, that's a rhetorical question, right?
- 1:36:39This thing has apparently 1100.
- 1:36:42Some odd horsepower.
- 1:36:43So, I mean, how heavy are the batteries required to make a thousand horsepower
- 1:36:49at 520 mile range or whatever, right.
- 1:36:52Or, you know, maybe, uh, at that horsepower, I think the range actually
- 1:36:56falls to like four 70 something, but nonetheless, that still would
- 1:37:00be the highest range EV period.
- 1:37:04And, and that's quite impressive.
- 1:37:05I mean, and who isn't going to be like, Oh, you want me to sacrifice
- 1:37:0950 miles for a thousand horsepower.
- 1:37:11Okay.
- 1:37:12And it still has 966 horsepower.
- 1:37:15If you want the full five 20, that's pretty decent.
- 1:37:18Last I checked nine 66.
- 1:37:20I mean,
- 1:37:20I mean, that's ridiculous.
- 1:37:22I mean, that's who needs that.
- 1:37:24I mean, I
- 1:37:25do need, what is this need?
- 1:37:27Hey, what do you speak up?
- 1:37:29It's the want.
- 1:37:30The want is strong for the thousand horsepower.
- 1:37:32So, I mean, that's pretty cool.
- 1:37:34I believe it's the 2022, so it should be Coming out soon.
- 1:37:38Coming around the corner pretty soon.
- 1:37:41So it'll be, it'll be interesting to see.
- 1:37:43I thought if I recalled the history here One of the main guys at Lucid
- 1:37:48was a former Tesla person, I believe.
- 1:37:50Yeah, I believe
- 1:37:50that's right.
- 1:37:51Yeah.
- 1:37:52I guess that's unfortunate that they lost him.
- 1:37:55Cause he must be doing something right.
- 1:37:57I am still not sold on the look of the Lucid area.
- 1:38:00You know, whatever.
- 1:38:00We'll see it in person.
- 1:38:01It's unattractive.
- 1:38:03And the interior is.
- 1:38:05Not that cool either.
- 1:38:06I mean, those are personal, those are personal preferences.
- 1:38:10I mean, it's still better looking than that Maybach thing.
- 1:38:15No, that that's, that's called the suppository on spinners.
- 1:38:18And
- 1:38:19is that like the ballet cat or whatever that thing was?
- 1:38:22But anyway, so I feel like this era of car manufacturing has actually
- 1:38:28brought us back a hundred years.
- 1:38:30And hear me out on this one.
- 1:38:32If you look back over like the 1920s and 1930s, there were a lot
- 1:38:35of very boutique manufacturers.
- 1:38:38You have all these crazy names like, Oh, you have Oakland.
- 1:38:40And obviously you have names like Packard and things like that, but it felt like
- 1:38:43everybody in their brother, literally in some cases, like the Bentley brothers
- 1:38:47were developing their own brand of car.
- 1:38:50And so there's all these little boutique manufacturers and now
- 1:38:52they've, you know, been absorbed by the big names and whatnot.
- 1:38:56But.
- 1:38:56We're starting to see in the EV revolution, more boutique
- 1:39:00manufacturers coming online.
- 1:39:01And one of them came across our desk, Alpha Motors.
- 1:39:05And I'm like, who the hell is Alpha Motors?
- 1:39:06I guess Beta Motors is next followed by Charlie Motors.
- 1:39:09I don't know, but they put out something that really got my attention.
- 1:39:12They call it the wolf.
- 1:39:14And it's an electric pickup truck.
- 1:39:16And why do we love it?
- 1:39:18Because it looks like the Toyota from back to the future.
- 1:39:22100%.
- 1:39:24I would buy this pickup truck.
- 1:39:28Ladies and gentlemen, I have said it.
- 1:39:29It
- 1:39:30has a range of five miles.
- 1:39:33I mean, that has got to be the least aerodynamic thing ever made,
- 1:39:37but it's hella cool.
- 1:39:39It doesn't matter.
- 1:39:40Yeah.
- 1:39:40Yeah.
- 1:39:41I agree.
- 1:39:41It looks totally badass.
- 1:39:42I want one.
- 1:39:43I take that over a Rivian.
- 1:39:44Yes, I would.
- 1:39:45I would.
- 1:39:45I would take that over a Rivian.
- 1:39:47That thing is sick.
- 1:39:48And if you don't know what we're talking about, check out the show notes.
- 1:39:50All the information is there.
- 1:39:52The pictures are, there's pictures from every angle and
- 1:39:54it looks good from every angle.
- 1:39:56It is that classic Toyota four runner style.
- 1:39:59Like you're used to on back to the future.
- 1:40:01It's a three box with big flared fenders and big knobby tires.
- 1:40:05It looks bad ass.
- 1:40:06What else?
- 1:40:07What we don't need bill is our next car.
- 1:40:10Oh my.
- 1:40:10And our next car is unclear what its name is, but apparently it's made by Opel.
- 1:40:18And it's name is Rox E.
- 1:40:21Like a boulder?
- 1:40:22Like a rock
- 1:40:23rock?
- 1:40:23Like Rox as in the things you step on.
- 1:40:26Dash E.
- 1:40:28Is this the Rox E or the Amy E V?
- 1:40:32Maybe it's both.
- 1:40:33Like they had a baby or something.
- 1:40:35Because this thing is weird looking.
- 1:40:37It has a whopping 5.
- 1:40:395 kilowatt hour battery.
- 1:40:40That's like a laptop.
- 1:40:41Right?
- 1:40:41It's Opal's, ah, okay, here we go.
- 1:40:44So Citroen has what is called the A.
- 1:40:47M.
- 1:40:47I.
- 1:40:47A.
- 1:40:48M.
- 1:40:48I.
- 1:40:48The A.
- 1:40:49M.
- 1:40:49I.
- 1:40:50Sorry.
- 1:40:51The friend.
- 1:40:52Mon ami.
- 1:40:53It's
- 1:40:53the A.
- 1:40:53M.
- 1:40:54I.
- 1:40:54The A.
- 1:40:54M.
- 1:40:55I.
- 1:40:55E.
- 1:40:55V.
- 1:40:56So Opal's version is the ROX E.
- 1:40:59And it's about the size of a Power Wheels.
- 1:41:03Yeah, this is a
- 1:41:04Power Wheels with a roll cage.
- 1:41:06The
- 1:41:06This is a joke, like it's a smart car.
- 1:41:09And then I don't know what happened to that smart car.
- 1:41:12It wasn't an accident or something.
- 1:41:13I mean, the seating position alone, the dashboard, just the interior
- 1:41:18cockpit would turn me away from the car outside of its overall aesthetics.
- 1:41:22Just being ultra French.
- 1:41:24But it's just like, I would be uncomfortable in this
- 1:41:27thing from the word go.
- 1:41:28On the cobbled streets of Europe in some medieval city, I'm sure it's totally fine.
- 1:41:33In America, you will die.
- 1:41:35A hundred percent.
- 1:41:35Don't do it.
- 1:41:36Don't
- 1:41:36do
- 1:41:37it.
- 1:41:38Book service announcement.
- 1:41:40Spare yourself.
- 1:41:41This one is because chips.
- 1:41:42It's not coming to America.
- 1:41:45We won't see this one in America.
- 1:41:46But um, there's another boutique manufacturer.
- 1:41:50They're known as Cupra and they have what they're calling the urban rebel.
- 1:41:55And so they developed a concept, which is essentially an electric hot hatch.
- 1:42:00And I can't honestly say that I hate it because it is definitely
- 1:42:04the epitome of hot hatch, like fast and the furious hot hat.
- 1:42:08I've
- 1:42:08got one of these in grand theft auto.
- 1:42:10Exactly.
- 1:42:11Like it's something from like need for speed underground, where you
- 1:42:14go into the garage and you put all your ground effects, lights
- 1:42:18on it, You know, all that stuff.
- 1:42:20It's like
- 1:42:20wheels.
- 1:42:21It's the scene from cars where
- 1:42:24every possible accessory
- 1:42:25does look like the wheels from that seven 18.
- 1:42:28Actually the nose does too.
- 1:42:29Here's my take on this.
- 1:42:31First of all, you had me at CUPRA because I immediately started
- 1:42:34thinking about the Seats, which for folks that don't know what Seat is,
- 1:42:38it's the Spanish arm of Volkswagen.
- 1:42:40They've had the CUPRA, which is the layoff is a lay on.
- 1:42:43Which is basically a GTI.
- 1:42:44The CUPRA Rs are fantastic cars.
- 1:42:46They're, they're a lot of fun.
- 1:42:47They're, they're actually in some respects, more powerful than the GTIs
- 1:42:50that we get here in the States, but they'll never bring them, but that's okay.
- 1:42:54What killed me on this article?
- 1:42:56It's Jalopnik, right?
- 1:42:58So it's the typical kind of clickbait and they go, and I'm
- 1:43:00going to read this verbatim.
- 1:43:01The CUPRA urban rebel concept is the electric hot hatch
- 1:43:05the world needs right now.
- 1:43:07In my best William Shatner impression.
- 1:43:09And I said, hell no.
- 1:43:11What the world needs right now is the GR Yaris.
- 1:43:14I'm standing up for Tanya on this one.
- 1:43:16Scrap this turd, bring over something that already exists that we already want.
- 1:43:21I don't need a boutique car.
- 1:43:23We need the GR Yaris.
- 1:43:24I we've said this a thousand times.
- 1:43:26This is not what the world needs.
- 1:43:28Yeah, but this is apples and oranges.
- 1:43:30The GR Yaris is a petrol car.
- 1:43:32Electric GR
- 1:43:33Yaris.
- 1:43:33We still need.
- 1:43:34The GRRs.
- 1:43:35We do still need the GRRs, but it's on a totally different level.
- 1:43:40I think if any other manufacturer that we recognize badge this, we'd
- 1:43:46be having a different conversation.
- 1:43:48Yes.
- 1:43:48Because we don't know who these folks are.
- 1:43:50They could be a skunk works for Say, for all we know, maybe they aren't.
- 1:43:55It's at least it's not a lot of like we mentioned earlier.
- 1:43:59Who knows?
- 1:43:59We'll keep an eye on it.
- 1:44:00Maybe it'll come to nothing.
- 1:44:02Maybe it's just a rendering.
- 1:44:03I
- 1:44:03mean, it's a concept car.
- 1:44:04So only time will tell.
- 1:44:06Speaking
- 1:44:07of concepts that aren't concepts that are actually rest of mods.
- 1:44:10We bring them up every month because there's been some really cool ones.
- 1:44:13We talked about the Yeah.
- 1:44:14E Legend, which was an homage to the original Audi Quattro.
- 1:44:18We talked about Morgans being redone as EVs, Alfa Romeo's, Opel Mantas,
- 1:44:23all sorts of really cool stuff.
- 1:44:24There's now a company that's doing a short wheelbase Ferrari 250 remake.
- 1:44:31And it is.
- 1:44:32Absolutely gorgeous company by the name of RML, not a ton of details.
- 1:44:38You can check out the pictures and salivate over them via our
- 1:44:41show notes, but really cool.
- 1:44:43I like that more of this is happening.
- 1:44:45I am a huge proponent for this style of EV and this style of just
- 1:44:52car design in general, bring back classic designs that people will buy.
- 1:44:57Hand over fist
- 1:44:58good Lord.
- 1:44:59That hits you right in the fields, man.
- 1:45:00That is gorgeous.
- 1:45:02Even in the white, which the Ferraris never came in.
- 1:45:04It's just, it is just beautiful, beautiful car.
- 1:45:08How they're able to do that without Ferrari breathing down
- 1:45:10their neck is beyond me, but
- 1:45:12wow.
- 1:45:12That was gorgeous.
- 1:45:13Geez.
- 1:45:14I'm just, I'm like, I'm in awe.
- 1:45:17Well, I guess it's time to transition and we'd be remiss if
- 1:45:21it wasn't a drive through episode where we didn't talk about.
- 1:45:25Tesla.
- 1:45:26That was your best Siri voice yet.
- 1:45:28Yeah, that was pretty good.
- 1:45:30Thank you.
- 1:45:30I tried Tesla.
- 1:45:32So, uh, you know, it's, it's kind of a quiet month for Tesla in a way.
- 1:45:38I mean, the cyber truck still delayed.
- 1:45:41They're not doing this.
- 1:45:42They're not doing that little roadster.
- 1:45:44Who knows?
- 1:45:45It's still floating in space,
- 1:45:46however.
- 1:45:49They're still dealing with a little teeny problem with their autopilot and
- 1:45:55the autopilot hitting parked emergency vehicles, particularly police cars.
- 1:46:01And yet again, another Tesla.
- 1:46:04That is not fully self autonomous, even though they think it is.
- 1:46:08Sideswipe the police car, nearly hit the police officer who I think at the time
- 1:46:12happened to be getting out of the car.
- 1:46:14So thankfully he wasn't killed or severely injured, but it's just adding to the
- 1:46:20list for the NHTSA to investigate what the heck is going on where the cars
- 1:46:26are seemingly getting very confused with the combination of it's always
- 1:46:29happening in like low light settings.
- 1:46:32So this was like early morning, so it was still dark outside and it's seemingly
- 1:46:36like darkness plus the flashing of the emergency vehicle light is just, it's
- 1:46:41like a, a fly to the electric bug zapper.
- 1:46:48And they're just, they're just going, they're just going.
- 1:46:51And, you know, again, the morons.
- 1:46:53Offense or no offense.
- 1:46:54I don't care because you're not paying attention.
- 1:46:57What are you doing that you're letting your car sideswipe a parked vehicle?
- 1:47:01You must
- 1:47:02want to
- 1:47:02leave it there.
- 1:47:03I can't believe I'm falling in the role of Tesla apologist.
- 1:47:06I'm definitely not one, but it doesn't make national news when
- 1:47:09anybody else sideswipes a cop that's pulled over on the side of the road.
- 1:47:13And usually they don't pull over very far.
- 1:47:15Sometimes they do that defensively to try and protect the car in front of them.
- 1:47:18They Hang their ass out over the line or whatever to
- 1:47:21right.
- 1:47:22And in a lot of States, it's illegal for you to stay in the lane adjacent
- 1:47:27to the pulled over emergency vehicle.
- 1:47:29And if you cannot exit that lane, you have to reduce your speed
- 1:47:32by like 50 percent or something.
- 1:47:34They do definitely need to program something into their autonomy that would
- 1:47:37move the car in the opposite direction.
- 1:47:40Not towards the way it would
- 1:47:42just sideswipe the car in the lane next to him.
- 1:47:44So what's fair
- 1:47:45enough, but it doesn't make national news when a Ford escape doesn't, right?
- 1:47:49I think the problem is it's not, it's not so much Tesla.
- 1:47:52It's so much that it's always the car is in self driving mode.
- 1:47:57That's always the common
- 1:47:58denominator.
- 1:47:59Yeah.
- 1:47:59Because if it was just like, Oh, dumb ass, Tesla driver was driving and
- 1:48:05texting and they sideswiped a car.
- 1:48:07Yes.
- 1:48:07That's no different than Ford Explorer driver.
- 1:48:10Dumb ass was texting lights, white car car.
- 1:48:13You know, when you're somebody like Tesla, that's claiming how awesome
- 1:48:18their self driving capabilities are and they're fully autonomous,
- 1:48:21you're putting a target on your back.
- 1:48:23And you're making it such that you're going to be the attention of every little
- 1:48:26thing that happens because you're claiming you're something that you really aren't.
- 1:48:30See Mark, this is the lesson we all learn about the drive through.
- 1:48:33Remember I mentioned in our, in our pre session, we just
- 1:48:36don't go there with the Tesla.
- 1:48:37You let Tanya do her thing.
- 1:48:40You let her rant, let her get it out of her system.
- 1:48:43It's like, I haven't heard the actual empirical argument.
- 1:48:47Yeah, it's pretty simple.
- 1:48:48Insurance companies ensure all these different cars.
- 1:48:51How many payouts do they make relative to mile driven on these cars?
- 1:48:55Autonomous driving, no autonomous driving.
- 1:48:57Is it doing better or worse than other expensive sedan?
- 1:49:01I haven't seen anybody release that data set.
- 1:49:04I don't know that.
- 1:49:05I mean, obviously they have the data.
- 1:49:06They absolutely have the data.
- 1:49:08You know, I haven't seen any, any news around that.
- 1:49:10I mean, certainly what do they call it?
- 1:49:12Autonomous level three or whatever.
- 1:49:14It's, it's a very dangerous point where it's, it's hard for humans.
- 1:49:18It's hard to have the discipline to pay attention.
- 1:49:20It really is.
- 1:49:21So you either turn it off.
- 1:49:23So you have to pay attention all the time.
- 1:49:24Or you try to have the discipline to pay attention the entire time while
- 1:49:27you're also kind of screwing around, because what else are you going to do?
- 1:49:30I was going to say it's called driving, but I mean, I'm not going to open that.
- 1:49:34Yeah.
- 1:49:34I mean, I don't disagree with you that we don't have the numbers and there's a lot
- 1:49:38of unsubstantiated claims that just say that there's far less accidents with, you
- 1:49:43know, the self driving the set and the other, and all these nannies and aides
- 1:49:46that lane assist and all that stuff.
- 1:49:48And, and, and that might be very true because I do think there is a subset
- 1:49:51of the population that is incapable of.
- 1:49:53Clearly keeping their focus on a single task at hand, which would be driving.
- 1:49:58And some of these aides are beneficial to the people around them to keep them
- 1:50:02safe, but I just get very annoyed by,
- 1:50:06I love the way you worded that,
- 1:50:08right?
- 1:50:08That was awesome.
- 1:50:11Are you a lawyer?
- 1:50:12I have no idea what you want in real life.
- 1:50:13That was very.
- 1:50:14That was very specific wording.
- 1:50:17I just get irritated by the ignorance or arrogance of people, the self driving,
- 1:50:22like stop calling it fully autonomous.
- 1:50:24It's not, we're not there yet.
- 1:50:25It does not exist as full autonomous.
- 1:50:27It's called a monorail.
- 1:50:28It's something like a roller coaster where the thing is tied to a track
- 1:50:32that is full autonomous, but we're not yet at a point where we can just.
- 1:50:36Take a nap in the driver's seat, roll the seat back, put on Netflix and chill, and
- 1:50:42not kill somebody going down the road at two o'clock in the morning and you're on
- 1:50:45a country road and you wanna go risk your life and drive off a cliff or into a tree.
- 1:50:49By all means, live your best life for as long as you can.
- 1:50:53, I don't know, don't put other people's lives unnecessarily in
- 1:50:56danger and, and maybe one day we'll get there, but we're not in.
- 1:51:00Yeah.
- 1:51:00You know, rah, it's only like 11 accidents on the grand scheme shore.
- 1:51:06But it's a black eye in the whole autonomous vehicle thing.
- 1:51:09And
- 1:51:10I hate the way that they face the market with it, where it's like, if they were
- 1:51:13just going to the market where they're like, yeah, accidents are happening
- 1:51:16and they do happen, they will happen and pay attention, assholes, uh, use
- 1:51:21the future responsibly, but instead they react so defensively and so
- 1:51:26aggressively against whoever bought it.
- 1:51:28That, you know, whoever raises concerns like, Hey, there appears to be a
- 1:51:32pattern to these accidents, if they were more just transparent about the
- 1:51:36challenges with the current software, I think they would get a lot further.
- 1:51:40I want to say this and I don't want to belabor the point, but the one
- 1:51:43thing that I take from all this is I approach it the opposite way.
- 1:51:47You know, I was jokingly saying, hang up and drive.
- 1:51:49You talked about, you know, being respectful of the future and the
- 1:51:51technology and stuff like that.
- 1:51:52When I look at driving, I think about the era in which we came up as drivers.
- 1:51:56Again, petrol heads of a certain age, we were the last of the analog generation.
- 1:52:00So we didn't have a lot of tech, but we were early adopters of technology,
- 1:52:04but I see driving still as a freedom, as a privilege, things like that.
- 1:52:09And I don't want to get into that debate, but what I also see it as is
- 1:52:12that moment, those 20 minutes, those 40 minutes, whatever it might be, where
- 1:52:16I get to disconnect from the grid.
- 1:52:19I don't have to think about work.
- 1:52:20I don't want to answer emails.
- 1:52:22I don't want to see your text message.
- 1:52:24I just want to turn on the radio, you know, my mixtape cruising in my five.
- 1:52:28Oh, with my carburetor and my hand crank and get where I'm going and
- 1:52:31just have a moment of decompression.
- 1:52:34And driving gives you that opportunity.
- 1:52:36So think about it that way disconnect for just a moment, even if it's to go to
- 1:52:41the local target or drop your kid off at school, put the phone down and just focus
- 1:52:45on driving and actually driving becomes very much second nature and you do relax.
- 1:52:50It's not a high stress thing as long as you're situationally aware.
- 1:52:54We talk about that a lot.
- 1:52:56In racing, keeping your eyes up and just being aware of what's going on.
- 1:52:59But you do kind of let the rest of the world fade to gray.
- 1:53:02And it's a moment of clarity that I don't think we can get or harvest
- 1:53:06in a lot of other ways these days.
- 1:53:08Unfortunately, we could tangent on that train of thought for a long time.
- 1:53:12Cause I flat out, there's people that have said they just hate to drive.
- 1:53:15So, but for a person that just.
- 1:53:16Does not want to drive or be positive with it, then get an Uber, right?
- 1:53:20You're not, you're not gonna, you're not going to sell them on it's
- 1:53:22their moment to disconnect because they don't want to disconnect.
- 1:53:24They don't even want to be behind the wheel.
- 1:53:26Like if they could have somebody else driving them, they would.
- 1:53:28Right.
- 1:53:29So that's for those people.
- 1:53:30Yeah.
- 1:53:30Self driving when it actually happens will be wonderful.
- 1:53:33So let's, uh, let's switch gears.
- 1:53:35We've hit on this already a couple times, electric cars and police
- 1:53:38cars, and apparently West Virginia.
- 1:53:41The city of nitro, West Virginia, I didn't know such a city existed.
- 1:53:46What a fancy name, which is near Charleston for those who are
- 1:53:50geographically not challenged for West Virginia has bought a Tesla model three.
- 1:53:55To be used as a police cruiser.
- 1:53:57I got questions
- 1:54:01and they spent an additional 10, 000 on top of the 40, 000 to buy it,
- 1:54:05to outfit it with the light sirens and additional police equipment.
- 1:54:09Well, not
- 1:54:10the sport model.
- 1:54:11Then
- 1:54:11none of that is important based on the previous topic.
- 1:54:15We were just talking about, we have a Tesla.
- 1:54:18That's a police car with lights and sirens.
- 1:54:21And we're going to use it on patrol day, night, weather, withstanding,
- 1:54:25does it just like implode?
- 1:54:30The second autopilot's engaged, it actually collapses in on itself in like
- 1:54:36a black hole and it just, it disappears.
- 1:54:39And the police officer becomes like Quantum Leap.
- 1:54:43It's all downhill from there.
- 1:54:45He now goes backwards in time to right histories and wrongs.
- 1:54:48Oh, my goodness.
- 1:54:50I think that's all we need to say about that.
- 1:54:52I just, let's follow this and see where it goes and how long this car actually lasts.
- 1:54:58I mean, my biggest question with all these electric police cars and
- 1:55:01I believe we're going to hit on.
- 1:55:03On this topic, actually later, what do you do in a high speed chase?
- 1:55:07Like if you're out running the cop, I mean, you probably could get
- 1:55:10away with it now because you only got to outlast the battery charge.
- 1:55:15And I tell you what, a Tesla full tilt.
- 1:55:18I've done this on track and I wrote an article about it.
- 1:55:20It doesn't last a half an hour at wide open.
- 1:55:23We'll call it wide open throttle.
- 1:55:24Well, then you got to consider the battery was probably not
- 1:55:27fully charged to begin with.
- 1:55:28Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
- 1:55:30I mean, you can't outrun Motorola.
- 1:55:31I'm not condoning any of this, but
- 1:55:35you can outrun those batteries.
- 1:55:36I'm not saying you should outrun the cost, but we know it happens.
- 1:55:39It'll be a Florida man story coming up.
- 1:55:41I mean, it's fine.
- 1:55:42It'll be West Virginia, man.
- 1:55:43The last bit of Tesla news is interesting.
- 1:55:47And not necessarily indicative of anything.
- 1:55:49Electric.
- 1:55:50co, they issued an article that says Tesla obtains patent on its wild idea
- 1:55:55to use lasers as windshield wipers.
- 1:56:00And there's just so much here.
- 1:56:02One could unpack.
- 1:56:04This is definitely Austin Powers, like sharks with fricking lasers on their head.
- 1:56:09Exactly.
- 1:56:10And you need to put
- 1:56:10one of those sharks, like, uh, like it's a windshield wiper.
- 1:56:13Yes.
- 1:56:15It's all very confusing and the take that it could just be that they
- 1:56:19came up with this idea and they're patenting it because that's what you do.
- 1:56:22If you think you have an idea, put a patent on it so nobody else can take it.
- 1:56:26And you might not yet know what you're actually going to use it
- 1:56:28for, but they framed it in this manner that really makes no sense.
- 1:56:32Talk about it specifically for debris on your windshield.
- 1:56:35So think dead bug, mud, bird doo doo, if you will.
- 1:56:40I see it all falling apart very quickly.
- 1:56:43So my windshield wipers are misaligned.
- 1:56:45So my car blinded me,
- 1:56:48then my windshield melted from the heat.
- 1:56:52And then the car got confused by the laser beam lights that were
- 1:56:55flashing at night during the rain.
- 1:56:58And then you crashed.
- 1:56:59Yes, it's obvious and very apparent that the patent and
- 1:57:03trade office is full of bad ideas.
- 1:57:05And this is just yet another one on that list.
- 1:57:08I would have thought they'd use it for heat and like some kind of anti fog.
- 1:57:14It's to give you like LASIK and cataracts.
- 1:57:17We're
- 1:57:18going to burn dirt off of your windshield.
- 1:57:21That just can't be efficient.
- 1:57:23That can't be energy efficient.
- 1:57:26And it sounds like they would not have a traditional windshield wiper
- 1:57:30blade going across the windshield.
- 1:57:31It almost reads that way, but that would be impossible because what do
- 1:57:35you do during a torrential downpour?
- 1:57:37There's no amount of lasers that are going to clear the water.
- 1:57:44And to do it, the laser would be so powerful that yes,
- 1:57:48it would burn your retina.
- 1:57:49Like it looks like a freaking
- 1:57:50like Calvin Harris midnight rave.
- 1:57:53It's like Lights everywhere, laser beams, and shit.
- 1:57:56You might as well get out the glow sticks at that point.
- 1:57:58I
- 1:57:58mean, it's
- 1:57:58gonna,
- 1:57:59it's gonna be
- 1:57:59a
- 1:57:59travesty.
- 1:58:00Though it does beg the memory, the Cybertruck does not have
- 1:58:04windshield wipers, I believe.
- 1:58:05No, it has that, it
- 1:58:06has
- 1:58:06that
- 1:58:06Etch a Sketch thing, where it moves, does some crazy thing
- 1:58:09on the, on the windshield.
- 1:58:11Absolutely mental.
- 1:58:12And the Cybertruck
- 1:58:13was delayed.
- 1:58:14Maybe it was delayed for laser beams.
- 1:58:16Chips.
- 1:58:17Because laser beams.
- 1:58:18The
- 1:58:18Model X was the Falcon doors, and the Cybertruck will be the Stupid windshield.
- 1:58:24As you guys remember from last month, we decided to split up.
- 1:58:27We would be remiss and introduce something we like to call
- 1:58:30lowered expectations.
- 1:58:34That's right.
- 1:58:34And I got to ask a question.
- 1:58:38I mean, we've, we brought up Magnus Walker before he put out on his Instagram feed
- 1:58:43and they kind of, one of them went viral.
- 1:58:44The other one sort of fell to the darkness.
- 1:58:47It was the Lambo van.
- 1:58:49It was a rendering that he put together of.
- 1:58:52Basically taking an eighties Lamborghini Countach and morphing
- 1:58:56it onto a VW van again, as you can see the core vehicle through this.
- 1:59:00And he also did one of an F40 and people went nuts.
- 1:59:02Like, Oh my God, this is the most awesome thing in the world.
- 1:59:04Actually, I think got more press in a way than the release of the new Lamborghini
- 1:59:08Countach that we talked about last month.
- 1:59:11But I wanted to get your guys opinions.
- 1:59:12What do you think about this?
- 1:59:13Well, we won the Countach definitely looks better than the F40.
- 1:59:16Yes.
- 1:59:17Like,
- 1:59:17like definitely.
- 1:59:19It's funny that the F40 got a lot more attention.
- 1:59:21I guess I have to be inclusive along my comments earlier that we need
- 1:59:24a broader accepting car culture.
- 1:59:27I would certainly take pictures of this if I found it out in the wild.
- 1:59:31That's for damn sure.
- 1:59:32I mean, it's the coolest Vanagon I've ever seen.
- 1:59:34I
- 1:59:34mean, if you told me that these were gen one transformers,
- 1:59:39totally be all over these.
- 1:59:41I would have both of them on my shelves and like expect them to transform
- 1:59:45into, you know, some robotic dude.
- 1:59:47Hang on.
- 1:59:48If it's this or a Pacifica, I'm definitely taking the Coontosh
- 1:59:51version of the Mannequin.
- 1:59:52Oh, wow.
- 1:59:55Shots fired.
- 1:59:56I'll tell you what, Pacifica is legit.
- 2:00:02Take the Coontosh in hand and one of those crate Ford electric motors.
- 2:00:06Hey, now we're talking.
- 2:00:08Now these would be really cool as ring buses.
- 2:00:10Like a Pantera.
- 2:00:11Can you make, well, that too, right?
- 2:00:13Can you imagine, but take these on the Nürburgring, like they
- 2:00:15have the ring taxis, these would be pretty slick to go around it.
- 2:00:18I mean, I would pay to go around in a Lambo van on the Nürburgring.
- 2:00:22So that'd be pretty slick.
- 2:00:22I
- 2:00:22feel like if I made it all the way out there, I'd have better uses of my time.
- 2:00:25That's very true.
- 2:00:26That's, I can't argue with that.
- 2:00:29If you have
- 2:00:30infinite days of the track, if I'm going to live the Nürburgring, sure.
- 2:00:33On the other side of lowered expectations, this one came from a friend of mine.
- 2:00:37She sent it to me and it was a TikTok link.
- 2:00:40And.
- 2:00:41A gentleman converted a vehicle into a life sized little red wagon, also
- 2:00:48known to many of us as the Astro Flyer.
- 2:00:51It's cool.
- 2:00:51Oh,
- 2:00:52I thought it at first was, I saw the handle and at first I
- 2:00:55was thinking back to that dude.
- 2:00:56That made the
- 2:00:58yeah, yeah, the trolley
- 2:01:00hand pump trolley train car thing.
- 2:01:03At first I was like, holy crap, is that this again?
- 2:01:05And then I thought it was a pedal cab kind of thing.
- 2:01:07But then I also thought it was one of those duck tour boats, right?
- 2:01:11Nope.
- 2:01:11It's a life size little red wagon.
- 2:01:14Okay, different strokes for different folks.
- 2:01:18I guess so.
- 2:01:19I mean, check it out for yourselves in the show notes, leave some
- 2:01:22comments, we're really interested to see what you think about this thing.
- 2:01:25I think it's kind of cool, but also just begs the question, why?
- 2:01:29Parade float.
- 2:01:31Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 2:01:32Well, now we got to move on to Rich people thing.
- 2:01:35This one pulls at my send it button pretty hard.
- 2:01:41And the title got me right away.
- 2:01:43And then I dug into it.
- 2:01:44Ever wonder if you could outrun a police pursuit?
- 2:01:49You won't have to wonder for very long if that police is a Tesla.
- 2:01:54Or an ID3 or whatever.
- 2:01:56Yeah, or any electric vehicle.
- 2:01:58But now your wish can come true because in the United Kingdom you can pay to try.
- 2:02:03So wait
- 2:02:05a second.
- 2:02:06And the very next subtitle to this article is It's you and a Porsche
- 2:02:11Boxster or Mazda Miata versus a law enforcement Dodge Charger, GTFO.
- 2:02:18Right?
- 2:02:19That's what I
- 2:02:20said.
- 2:02:20A Miata versus a Dodge Charger.
- 2:02:23On a racetrack.
- 2:02:25On a highway.
- 2:02:27Different problem.
- 2:02:28On a racetrack.
- 2:02:29First off ramp and then Miata would be gone.
- 2:02:32But here's the deal.
- 2:02:33Let's give you the bluff, right?
- 2:02:34The bottom line up front.
- 2:02:35An hour and a half, Includes the introductions to the basics, right?
- 2:02:39So they're assuming people don't have track time, whatever.
- 2:02:42So they go over safety, racing lines, throttle and braking, you know,
- 2:02:45typical HBDE and HBDC type of stuff, testing on the track, getting familiar.
- 2:02:50And then you get to choose between the Boxster or the Miata.
- 2:02:54I would personally choose the Boxster knowing what Miata's are like.
- 2:02:57No offense to miata lovers, just saying.
- 2:02:59I'm in a police pursuit.
- 2:03:00I think I want the Porsche.
- 2:03:02Yes.
- 2:03:03It's a 15 minute police pursuit.
- 2:03:05So think about it as a shortened track session and you're being chased by a Dodge
- 2:03:09Charger and your attempt is to escape.
- 2:03:12Where you're escaping to, I don't know, because you're lapping the track.
- 2:03:15I feel like I do this on any given weekend at the track anyway.
- 2:03:18And it probably costs a lot less, but I like the idea of the cherries and berries
- 2:03:24chasing me around, but not in the Miata.
- 2:03:26That's for sure.
- 2:03:27That is for sure.
- 2:03:28Now, if you had told me, come to the track with your own car and outrun
- 2:03:32the cops, hell yeah, let's do this.
- 2:03:35I'm in it to win it.
- 2:03:37Yeah, I mean, it seems it seems a little gimmicky.
- 2:03:39I was the headline was So cool.
- 2:03:42I was like, Oh, this is gonna be awesome.
- 2:03:43I think it was one of the old top gear episodes.
- 2:03:45Maybe it was top gear us, or they had like a military base where
- 2:03:48they'd abandoned the housing section.
- 2:03:51And so they ended up doing some little contests where they're
- 2:03:54running from Stig or Stig's chasing them around the housing section.
- 2:03:58And so you had this kind of residential setup, but of course there's nobody there.
- 2:04:01So if you jump a curb or run into a house or something, it's not a big deal.
- 2:04:04I was hoping it might be something like that.
- 2:04:06It seems like just a way to play flashlight tag.
- 2:04:08Yeah,
- 2:04:09exactly.
- 2:04:10And in a Miata, you're not going to get very far in 15 minutes.
- 2:04:13I hate to break it to you folks, especially with a Hemi charger behind you.
- 2:04:16It's not going to work.
- 2:04:17It's not going to take him very long to catch you.
- 2:04:19You better have like a three minute headstart or something.
- 2:04:22Well, if you're in the market for a luxurious motor home and
- 2:04:27you happen to have a cool 2.
- 2:04:304 million burning a hole in your pocket, You could check out a German
- 2:04:35brand called Volkner mobile that makes a very luxurious motor home for which
- 2:04:41you could also slide your Bugatti or other high performance luxury car
- 2:04:46underneath in its own private garage.
- 2:04:51I love that the second picture is an I 8 that's a bit of a change.
- 2:04:56I
- 2:04:57mean, picture number one, Bugatti Chiron, picture number two, an I 8.
- 2:05:01We picked up for five bucks.
- 2:05:04We've seen these before on the old top gear, where they showed this
- 2:05:07being done with a Morgan arrow eight, if I remember correctly, and
- 2:05:10they had an older Volkner on there.
- 2:05:12So I'm glad to see that they're still around.
- 2:05:14Didn't realize there was a huge market for these things.
- 2:05:16Redefines the toter home and the toy hauler and whatnot.
- 2:05:20But, uh, yeah, if you got 2.
- 2:05:214 million bucks to burn, what, what the hell not send it,
- 2:05:25it looks super nice inside.
- 2:05:26I don't know if it looks 2.
- 2:05:274 million nights though.
- 2:05:29And maybe if 2.
- 2:05:304 is.
- 2:05:31Too steep.
- 2:05:32Maybe the stereo system is an option because I would save you 355,
- 2:05:37000.
- 2:05:37Whoa.
- 2:05:39Brings it down to a cool 1.
- 2:05:419 million.
- 2:05:42All right.
- 2:05:44More taxes, tags, and insurance.
- 2:05:46But it wouldn't be a drive through if we didn't finally reach our most anticipated
- 2:05:51part of the show, our Florida Man Stories.
- 2:05:54So the first one is very interesting and unexplained.
- 2:05:59Uh, uh, uh, no pun intended.
- 2:06:02Or was it a UFO sighted on the Florida turnpike and apparently it's legit was not
- 2:06:11photoshopped, but there's no explanation as to why it is gigantic metal circular
- 2:06:19thing was driving down the turnpike.
- 2:06:23I mean, it's, it's right in the name.
- 2:06:25U F O.
- 2:06:26There's no F here.
- 2:06:27It was driving.
- 2:06:30It was a U D O.
- 2:06:34Unidentified driving object was seen on the floor of Turnpike.
- 2:06:38I just want to know which VW Beetle this was built on top of.
- 2:06:43Thing is tragic.
- 2:06:46And I love the fact what makes it even better is the cover photo, which
- 2:06:49is in our show notes, looks like every other alien Bigfoot sighting
- 2:06:54photo where every freaking person now has like triple and quadruple high
- 2:06:59definition cameras on their cell phone.
- 2:07:01And this thing is grainy as shit.
- 2:07:03Like it was taken on an Olympus.
- 2:07:05From like 1982, like I do not
- 2:07:08understand.
- 2:07:09Yeah.
- 2:07:09These people are taking 25 megapixel photos on their, whatever phone this
- 2:07:14thing looks like it was a Polaroid from the favorite Instagram comment was.
- 2:07:21New Tesla.
- 2:07:26It's the Model U.
- 2:07:27It's the Model U, baby.
- 2:07:29I bet
- 2:07:30it's the CyberDisk.
- 2:07:32Oh
- 2:07:34man, but you know what?
- 2:07:35I bet this has Home Depot parts.
- 2:07:37This
- 2:07:38is guaranteed to be made in someone's basement with Home Depot parts.
- 2:07:45Dude, that
- 2:07:45cockpit alone just is comically cartoonish.
- 2:07:49Like,
- 2:07:50can you imagine driving this freaking thing down the highway?
- 2:07:54It's just brutal.
- 2:07:55It's brutal.
- 2:07:56I mean, the aerodynamics, like, at what speed do you start generating lift?
- 2:08:00I mean, look at the shape.
- 2:08:01Like, you're gonna, that thing is, it's, it's, It's genuinely dangerous.
- 2:08:06It looks so unstable.
- 2:08:10Oh, guaranteed.
- 2:08:11It's like some 72 year old man driving to the flea market.
- 2:08:15Like, you know, pick up cucumbers or something.
- 2:08:18It's just, oh, it's tragic.
- 2:08:20It's like, like that Mercedes from 2000 or whatever that just flipped up in the air.
- 2:08:24It's like, as soon as that guy hits 55, he's taken off.
- 2:08:26Oh, the CLK GTR.
- 2:08:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:08:28Yeah, from uh, Lamonts.
- 2:08:29Alright, what's next?
- 2:08:30You're killing me.
- 2:08:31So we're gonna take a detour real quick.
- 2:08:33Out of Florida, we're gonna go north to Vermont.
- 2:08:37Whoa.
- 2:08:37We haven't been to Vermont yet.
- 2:08:39We've never been to Vermont before and honestly this seems very
- 2:08:41uncharacteristic of, of a Vermont Ian.
- 2:08:44But hey, there's all types everywhere.
- 2:08:46So apparently there was a man in Vermont charged with stealing five Teslas.
- 2:08:52Oh, but also lighting it on fire on Lake Champlain.
- 2:08:58So he bought them with initial small payments and then started doing a
- 2:09:03whole multiple bank accounts and all different places trying to bullshit
- 2:09:08his way out of pain for them.
- 2:09:10And then the fifth one.
- 2:09:12Apparently, because I guess he couldn't get the right paperwork to turn around
- 2:09:16and sell these cars right away after he bought them for nothing and didn't
- 2:09:18finish the payments, he drove it out onto the lake when it was iced over.
- 2:09:24And then it allegedly just caught on fire spontaneously,
- 2:09:28was there like an ambulance or something nearby?
- 2:09:31There might
- 2:09:32have been like an emergency vehicle out on the lake that it slammed
- 2:09:36into and then combusted, but he tried to file an insurance claim.
- 2:09:39Of
- 2:09:40course he did,
- 2:09:41which was rejected.
- 2:09:43So kudos to that insurance adjuster, uh, or insurance agent, the vehicles
- 2:09:47apparently totaled 607, 000.
- 2:09:50Good God.
- 2:09:51So these were high end Tesla's, I guess.
- 2:09:53This is where the, uh, direct to consumer market is good because normally a dealer
- 2:09:58would have to eat that a relatively small business would be stuck with
- 2:10:02that payment to the bank, but nope, that comes right out of Elon's pocket.
- 2:10:06So
- 2:10:07how do you feel about this guy?
- 2:10:09When he puts your name, you're allegedly friends with this dude and
- 2:10:13he puts your name on these purchases.
- 2:10:15I mean, that's like your buddy signing you up for porn magazines too, right?
- 2:10:19And it's the same thing.
- 2:10:23Who knew these people were in Vermont, but they're there too, ladies and gentlemen.
- 2:10:27So,
- 2:10:27you know, it could have been worse.
- 2:10:29He could have done like that Porsche guy we talked about last year, who
- 2:10:32printed his own checks on the printer at home and then went bottom with that.
- 2:10:36So, you know, Hey, there's all different ways that approach this.
- 2:10:40Well, let's go back down to Florida real quick.
- 2:10:42So there is a link out there of a Facebook video of a fabulous bystander who
- 2:10:49stopped, observed this and recorded it.
- 2:10:52So thank you to those people.
- 2:10:53Was it grainy or was it actually like visible?
- 2:10:56No, it's pretty good.
- 2:10:57I mean, he, I wish he was a little bit closer so I could
- 2:10:59see better, but it's enough.
- 2:11:02So Florida man was pulled over in the middle, you know, whatever the highway
- 2:11:05there was road, minor highway, not major.
- 2:11:08And, uh, he got out and then instead of just Staying in the car
- 2:11:13or just standing outside the car.
- 2:11:15You should never get outside the car unless the police directed you to.
- 2:11:17He starts twerking in the middle of the road and it's raining outside.
- 2:11:24So there's a Florida man twerking in the middle of the frickin road.
- 2:11:28And then the police tase him to subdue him.
- 2:11:32I, I can't.
- 2:11:34I cannot unsee this.
- 2:11:36And I want, and I want to.
- 2:11:38You don't want to unsee it.
- 2:11:40It's fantastic.
- 2:11:41This is just, oh, it's epic.
- 2:11:43I mean, the restraint from the officer is pretty good, like, he could have
- 2:11:47tased that guy a couple minutes earlier.
- 2:11:49Yes, he could have.
- 2:11:50But he let it go, you know, thinking maybe he'd twerk himself out and get a
- 2:11:53little tired, I guess, and get compliant.
- 2:11:56Like,
- 2:11:57I mean, I'd rather see this guy twerking in the middle of the traffic
- 2:12:01than those assholes we talked about that are doing donuts in the middle
- 2:12:04of the beltway, you know, God, I stopped, I stopped for the twerking.
- 2:12:08I mean, you know, it's entertainment.
- 2:12:10So what the hell is going on?
- 2:12:13And
- 2:12:13the next one.
- 2:12:15Must've been the Vermont guy's cousin or something, but you know, these
- 2:12:18are more like dumbest criminal files.
- 2:12:20So Florida guy, he, uh, steals a car from a Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership.
- 2:12:26Then he turns around and tries to trade it back into the same dealership.
- 2:12:33Because we're never going to check the bin,
- 2:12:35which they did do and realize that the car that went missing on their lot just
- 2:12:40a few days earlier was a Was, in fact, this same car now trying to be traded in.
- 2:12:45Oh my
- 2:12:45God.
- 2:12:46So good job on you.
- 2:12:48I do love the comments.
- 2:12:49So you always got to read the comments.
- 2:12:51Did he have the dealer tag still on it?
- 2:12:56That was your first clue.
- 2:12:57Hey, Bob, you know, the dealer tag that went missing just came in for traded.
- 2:13:03But if that wasn't bad enough.
- 2:13:05Oh, please, please tell me there's more.
- 2:13:09I mean, you can just read the title and it just explains the whole article, right?
- 2:13:12So, Florida man arrested for indecent exposure after driving
- 2:13:16naked through seven toll booths.
- 2:13:20Well, I mean, was it summertime?
- 2:13:21Cause I mean, it's hot in
- 2:13:23Florida.
- 2:13:23I mean, it's, it's, you know, it was late August, early September in Florida.
- 2:13:29So yes, Was
- 2:13:29he so fat that he covered his private parts?
- 2:13:33In which case, I mean, is that really indecent exposure?
- 2:13:36The toll workers could apparently see those areas.
- 2:13:43That's
- 2:13:43unfortunate.
- 2:13:44That's the one time where being really overweight could be helpful.
- 2:13:46He was nudist.
- 2:13:47He was a nudist.
- 2:13:48That's his defense.
- 2:13:49It's
- 2:13:50a religious defense.
- 2:13:52It's part of his religion.
- 2:13:53The hilarious part is, the gentleman, Phil Yaw, his last name, Phil
- 2:13:58Yaw was identified through photo comparison and security footage.
- 2:14:04I'm just gonna let Photo comparisons
- 2:14:08of what?
- 2:14:09Brings a whole, brings a whole new definition.
- 2:14:12I've seen that dickhead before.
- 2:14:17People just get the freaking easy pass.
- 2:14:22I've seen that asshole before.
- 2:14:24Damn it.
- 2:14:24He's back
- 2:14:26to round out the Florida man.
- 2:14:28I kept this one for last.
- 2:14:29Well, I thought this one was amusing and you know what, this
- 2:14:32person, you know, he got fed up.
- 2:14:34He got tired.
- 2:14:35You know, he's probably tired of spending money, having to repair his car.
- 2:14:38And he's, he's clearly.
- 2:14:40An environmentally conscious individual.
- 2:14:44So I give him props because he got tired of the private road
- 2:14:48that he drives on being in poor condition, riddled with potholes.
- 2:14:52So what does he do?
- 2:14:53He takes matters into his own hands and he plants a banana tree in the pothole.
- 2:15:03So now instead of driving over the pothole, you have to evade a banana tree.
- 2:15:08Yep.
- 2:15:10Yes.
- 2:15:11So in the, and you know what he considers himself warning other motorists.
- 2:15:16That the potholes there because you'll see the tree.
- 2:15:18You might not have seen the pothole.
- 2:15:20Oh, so there's
- 2:15:21some definite upsides here, right?
- 2:15:22So number one, you'd have a really easy measurement for how long the
- 2:15:25potholes remain unfixed, because you can see how tall the tree is.
- 2:15:29And if you click on the picture, it's surprisingly tall.
- 2:15:32I'm surprised no one just ran over the damn thing.
- 2:15:34It's like four or five feet tall, which is crazy.
- 2:15:37Um, I kind of think a downside would be the root system wouldn't
- 2:15:41be so great for the road.
- 2:15:42is already obviously imperiled all by itself.
- 2:15:46I have to think that part is maybe not great.
- 2:15:48That's true.
- 2:15:49Long term, this tree is going to cause more damage than good.
- 2:15:52But you said it was a private road.
- 2:15:54And I don't know what that means.
- 2:15:56Probably not maintained by the city or the county or the township, so.
- 2:16:00Right.
- 2:16:00But what is that?
- 2:16:01Is it, is it his own road then?
- 2:16:03I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a trailer park in Florida with an HOA that
- 2:16:09is somehow shockingly behind on its dues.
- 2:16:12Maybe because it's a trailer park in Florida and they can't
- 2:16:14afford to keep up the roots.
- 2:16:17So we put in a banana tree.
- 2:16:19You can afford the
- 2:16:20banana tree.
- 2:16:21Obvious solution is you plant a banana tree in the potholes.
- 2:16:24Because the money is in the banana stand, right?
- 2:16:27I, you know.
- 2:16:28There's a little arrested development for you.
- 2:16:30He's got a business going here.
- 2:16:32So kudos to him.
- 2:16:33He's being environmentally conscious because it does say.
- 2:16:36The idea came to his mind after having to fill holes in the
- 2:16:39street with cement multiple times.
- 2:16:42So this gentleman has been taking it upon himself to do road
- 2:16:46repair that hasn't been working.
- 2:16:48He's been pouring quikrete into
- 2:16:51potholes.
- 2:16:53And oddly enough, I think what saddens me the most is that regardless
- 2:16:57of whatever he's using, quikrete, concrete, dog manure, I don't care.
- 2:17:02A banana tree is somewhat cheaper than all of those items that
- 2:17:06you'd be putting in a pothole.
- 2:17:08That just baffles my mind.
- 2:17:09I mean, how, I don't even know how the seeds on it, where do
- 2:17:11you get the seed for banana?
- 2:17:13Did he use like a split or did he take a cutting?
- 2:17:16I mean, I am not, I am the furthest thing from a botanist.
- 2:17:19So he went to the
- 2:17:20local, he went to the local garden center.
- 2:17:23He picked up the pre started pre grown potted banana plant, probably.
- 2:17:27And just plop it in there with some
- 2:17:28Miracle Gro.
- 2:17:29Miracle Gro is not cheap though.
- 2:17:30You know,
- 2:17:31again, solid logic, environmentally friendly approach to fixing the road.
- 2:17:35Ah, Florida.
- 2:17:36You delight me every month.
- 2:17:38There's just so much going on there, but unfortunately we have
- 2:17:40to go behind the wall very quickly for some motor sports news.
- 2:17:43And this month we concentrate mostly on open wheel racing.
- 2:17:46And I'm just going to do a couple of quick things.
- 2:17:48First up, we talked about Michael Andretti starting his U S based
- 2:17:52formula one team last month.
- 2:17:54He has apparently signed a gross John or gross Jean, or however you
- 2:17:58want to pronounce it to run on the Andretti auto sport team in 2022.
- 2:18:04So that's solidifying some dates, solidifying a name driver.
- 2:18:08I'm really excited to see how that goes for team Andretti
- 2:18:11and wish them the best of luck.
- 2:18:13In addition to that, there was a pretty.
- 2:18:15Epic crash that we posted the video for on our show notes that happened
- 2:18:19at spa after spa has now finally been reopened during the formula W series.
- 2:18:25It's a pretty bad pileup there's in multiple angles, slow motion in real
- 2:18:30time, et cetera, all I can say is there must've been debris on the track and
- 2:18:35somebody or a liquid that they didn't see.
- 2:18:36And one of the flaggers didn't catch it.
- 2:18:38It happened basically right at Eau Rouge, pretty bad accident there.
- 2:18:42My other big thing was formula W.
- 2:18:44Question mark, but we can save that.
- 2:18:46We'll put a pin in it and talk about it on another episode.
- 2:18:49Meanwhile, more drama in Formula One land.
- 2:18:52The non drama side is that Kimi Raikkonen has finally announced his retirement, but
- 2:18:58with that brought a whole shuffling of drivers as he leaves the seat at Alpha.
- 2:19:03Much to the correct speculation of folks, Botas leaves Mercedes, fills
- 2:19:09the seat from Kimmy in Alpha, George Russell is moving to Mercedes to team
- 2:19:14with Lewis Hamilton, and they're bringing back Alban to fill the now vacant
- 2:19:20Williams seat from George Russell.
- 2:19:22And we got Grossjean going to Andretti next year, so there you go.
- 2:19:25But the real drama came at the Monza race where there was another.
- 2:19:31Incident between Verstappen and Hamilton, which took them both out.
- 2:19:36I don't know my Monza turn numbers, but as they're coming down, you know, past
- 2:19:40start, finish pit lane out the right hander, sharp right hander into the,
- 2:19:45you know, 90 degree right, 90 degree left, that quick chicane right there.
- 2:19:49Hamilton came out of the pits.
- 2:19:51He had established front wheels in front of Verstappen, who
- 2:19:54was already hot on track.
- 2:19:56Uh, Hamilton came in on the inside into that first turn.
- 2:20:00Verstappen tried to take the outside.
- 2:20:02Of course, you immediately have to come over to the left to make the next turn.
- 2:20:06There was a pinching off that happened.
- 2:20:08Essentially the tires of Verstappen hit, hit Hamilton's that shot Verstappen
- 2:20:13up on top of Hamilton, where his car then ended up coming to rest.
- 2:20:17And when you watch kind of the replay, you actually see that.
- 2:20:20If the halo hadn't been there, Lewis Hamilton would probably either be dead
- 2:20:25or very critically injured because the front or back tire of Verstappen's
- 2:20:29car actually bounced off his head.
- 2:20:31You know, most of that force was luckily absorbed by the halo,
- 2:20:34but there was still impact.
- 2:20:36So had that halo not been there, that would have been a catastrophic incident.
- 2:20:39Good on formula one for making these safety improvements.
- 2:20:43To help save these drivers lives at the end of the day, it was deemed that
- 2:20:47Verstappen was more at fault in this incident, being a little too aggressive,
- 2:20:52I think was the final ruling he's, I think, receiving like a three place
- 2:20:55penalty at the start of the next race to
- 2:20:58no one's surprise, right?
- 2:21:01I don't even follow.
- 2:21:02Formula one that closely, but that accident certainly made it
- 2:21:06into my, you know, new cycle.
- 2:21:08And it's just that kind of safety stuff.
- 2:21:10If they can make those improvements, they need to.
- 2:21:12Yeah.
- 2:21:12And a lot of us laughed about that halo and how goofy it looks and
- 2:21:15it impairs the driver's vision and all this kind of stuff.
- 2:21:17And I was still skeptical on whether or not it works because it's very
- 2:21:20rare that a formula car like flips over, you have an accident like this.
- 2:21:24I mean, this is reminiscent of some like weird carting accident where one goes
- 2:21:27underneath the other one kind of deal.
- 2:21:29But I often wonder too, that they make these safety improvements.
- 2:21:32They make some of these.
- 2:21:32Drastic changes.
- 2:21:33And then that gives the drivers a false sense of invincibility where
- 2:21:38they're like, well, I can risk because now we have this added safety thing.
- 2:21:41And so maybe, you know, we can try a little bit harder.
- 2:21:43So I often wonder that it comes at an expense and there's a balance there.
- 2:21:47And so maybe if it wasn't there, then they would know, Hey, I'm
- 2:21:50not going to take that risk.
- 2:21:51I'm going to back off.
- 2:21:51I'm going to give them the space.
- 2:21:52Like you didn't, prost Senate days when they would battle it out and take
- 2:21:56each other out, it was never like this.
- 2:21:58Like, I feel like they're a lot more aggressive now, or maybe just
- 2:22:01for stoppings, more aggressive.
- 2:22:02In general, you know, he is a former Carter and things like that.
- 2:22:05He's just, maybe it never got out of his system.
- 2:22:07I'm not trying to make excuses.
- 2:22:08I just, I'm glad it's there.
- 2:22:10Hamilton's still around and all that, but I think
- 2:22:13there's been some other accidents though, that haven't been necessarily contact
- 2:22:17on contact like this, where the halo has probably saved the driver's life.
- 2:22:23That's the whole rugby versus football, you know, analogy relative to the
- 2:22:27protective equipment and do American football players take more risks.
- 2:22:30I think there's probably some validity is it's not mutually exclusive.
- 2:22:34It can be both of those things.
- 2:22:35Well, unfortunately we don't have a ton of other motorsport news this month.
- 2:22:38You know, we've been so busy with everything else that's been going
- 2:22:41on, including Florida man stories, but we want to just wrap up the
- 2:22:44show here with some local news.
- 2:22:46and shout outs and whatnot and reminders of things that are coming up.
- 2:22:50So for anybody that's listening, this is obviously airing on the 28th of September.
- 2:22:55Our town hall is the 29th.
- 2:22:57It's our open general assembly meeting.
- 2:23:00If you want to come and meet some of the crew here at GTM, some of the
- 2:23:02region chiefs, other members, it's a bit of a happy hour type of thing.
- 2:23:05Format.

- 2:23:07It's your opportunity to voice your opinion or come check us
- 2:23:10out and see how you like it.

- 2:23:22On to our track side report sponsored by hpdjunkie.
- 2:23:26com.
- 2:23:26What's coming up in September, October.
- 2:23:28The two hottest things that have come across my desk right now is Hooked
- 2:23:31on Driving has added another date to their calendar, kind of last minute.
- 2:23:36They're going to be at Palmer Motorsports Park the weekend of October 9th.
- 2:23:41It's been a while since HOD has been to Palmer.
- 2:23:44I was at the last time that they were there and I loved it.
- 2:23:48The fastest mountain road you've ever raced on.
- 2:23:50They actually blew off the top of a mountain to build this racetrack up there.
- 2:23:54So if you haven't experienced Palmer yet, there's this little bit of added
- 2:23:57risk and awesomeness, because it's very different than any other racetrack you've
- 2:24:00been to, but even if you just want to go and check it out and you live in
- 2:24:04the Northeast, head on up to Palmer and see what it's all about and meet the
- 2:24:07friendly folks over at Hooked on Driving.
- 2:24:09Now for us here at GTM, a lot of us are wrapping up our season.
- 2:24:12We got folks at Indianapolis right now at the SCCA runoffs.
- 2:24:16We got events.
- 2:24:17Now through basically November where we wrap up with the Audi club.
- 2:24:20But for those of us here on the show, we're probably wrapping up our season
- 2:24:24this year at the end of October, October 22nd through 24th at Watkins Glen.
- 2:24:29So if you're going to be in that area and you want to kind of check it out,
- 2:24:32we're going to go visit with our friends at Hooked on Driving up at Watkins Glen.
- 2:24:35So be sure to join us up there, October 22nd through 24th.
- 2:24:39Now, I also want to give a big shout out To our newest sponsor, American muscle.
- 2:24:45com American muscle.

- 2:24:50So be sure to check out American muscle.

- 2:25:08And in case you missed out, check out the other podcast episodes
- 2:25:11that aired earlier this month.
- 2:25:12This month was filled with crossovers.
- 2:25:14We got our drink on with health and hydration consultant Ken Newbill
- 2:25:17as we discussed techniques for beating the dreaded track hangover.
- 2:25:20Intrigue, espionage, and the occult was the theme when we spoke
- 2:25:24with author and historian John W.
- 2:25:26Warner IV about his book series, Little Anton.
- 2:25:29And be sure to check out the follow on Patreon Pit Stop episode
- 2:25:32where we go beyond Little Anton.

- 2:25:40original verse sequels in a movie showdown with Steve and Izzy from
- 2:25:43Everything I Learned From Movies.
- 2:25:45And if we didn't have enough crossovers this month, tune in for a bonus episode
- 2:25:49with Carolyn Ford and Mark Sanel of Tech Transforms Podcast, where we
- 2:25:53speak about the intersection between racing and information technology.
