- 0:00I am not a guru.
- 0:01I am not a money person and I am not an economist.
- 0:05I am a mom who is noticing things.
- 0:09Things that it feels like no one is talking about.
- 0:12Things that I feel like we should be sharing.
- 0:16Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic. My name is Shanna.
- 0:19If you are new here, we're a homeschooling family of four.
- 0:21We are entering our 10th year of homeschooling, and today
- 0:23I want to talk with you about the red flags, the concerns,
- 0:29the things that are showing me and telling me
- 0:33that we are entering a recession if we aren't already
- 0:36in a recession.
- 0:43Before we go any further, please scroll down,
- 0:45hit the big red subscribe button, turn on that bell
- 0:46for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:48As always,
- 0:49you can find me write and down in the comments
- 0:51or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:53So in classic fashion in recent times,
- 0:56there are big things happening and it feels like a whole.
- 1:01We just aren't talking about them.
- 1:03It feels very Twilight zone.
- 1:05It makes you feel a little crazy, like everybody isn't seeing the same things.
- 1:10Which is why today I want to share with you
- 1:13I have an entire list that I have been making
- 1:15because you know how once you start noticing
- 1:17something, you can't stop noticing the thing.
- 1:19So I have an entire list on my post-it note that I'm going to share with you
- 1:24of things that tell me the economic climate is changing, has changed,
- 1:30and will be probably honestly, harder to weather coming up soon.
- 1:34But I'm also going to tell you what I think
- 1:37is going to happen based on what I'm seeing,
- 1:41because I think there's a few things that are definitely going to shift now.
- 1:46I don't watch the stock market, I don't keep up with all the latest news.
- 1:51And this isn't about politics or the fed interest rate.
- 1:55This isn't about those things.
- 1:57These are just patterns that I am noticing,
- 2:01things that are different, things that are out of the norm.
- 2:04Things that for me, and if I'm paying attention,
- 2:08give me pause, give me
- 2:12a second thought, make me
- 2:14have concern for what will surely be coming up
- 2:18soon, in the near future for us, kind of financially.
- 2:23So again, not claiming that I'm an expert, not claiming to know
- 2:26everything, but definitely a few things that I have noticed.
- 2:29So something that I notice and these are in no particular order.
- 2:32They're just the list. I made them all my post-it note.
- 2:34Something that I noticed is we actually recently went and visited
- 2:39Grandma and Grandpa and Grandma and grandpa
- 2:41live in San Antonio, and in San Antonio there's this wonderful area
- 2:44called the Riverwalk.
- 2:45And the Riverwalk is the tourist destination of the entire,
- 2:49like, Texas Hill Country. Okay.
- 2:50So it is like a big deal. It's gorgeous.
- 2:52It's cute, it's wonderful. Very historic.
- 2:55Tons of restaurants, novelty restaurants, hotels.
- 2:59It's near the convention center. It's like a big deal.
- 3:01Okay. Right by the mall.
- 3:03Huge deal. Right by the Alamo.
- 3:05We had gone to the zoo, which is another one
- 3:08I'm going to get to in a minute.
- 3:09We had gone to the zoo and we had a gift
- 3:15card, a credit, and the kids really wanted to eat at Rainforest Cafe.
- 3:18And they love the San Antonio Riverwalk Rainforest Cafe.
- 3:22So we being a party of six on a Sunday afternoon,
- 3:26a gorgeous, glorious sunny day in June, we were like, okay, we're going to do it.
- 3:30We're going to see if we can make it happen.
- 3:32We go, we park, we walk past Alamo Plaza.
- 3:34Alappuzha is empty,
- 3:37but on a Sunday in the summer
- 3:40and I'm talking major tourist destination, we make it over to the Riverwalk.
- 3:44We go over, we go to Rainforest Cafe.
- 3:46Immediate seating on a Sunday afternoon at a novelty restaurant
- 3:51at a tourist location, immediate seating for a party of six
- 3:56on a Sunday afternoon at like, get out of church time 1230 1:00.
- 4:01The San Antonio Riverwalk was dead like vacant.
- 4:04There was nobody there.
- 4:06If you've ever been, then you know that it is.
- 4:09Wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder.
- 4:10You can't take a stroller.
- 4:11You're always scared some stranger is going to bump you into the river.
- 4:13There's always like cadets from Air Force and things all over the place.
- 4:17Nothing. Nada. No one.
- 4:20It was so empty.
- 4:22I took pictures because I was like, something is happening.
- 4:24Like I texted people I know because it was so wild to me.
- 4:29Now, something else that I am noticing.
- 4:31I went to my my youngest.
- 4:33We went to the Houston Zoo the day before for the July or so.
- 4:36It was like the second because the third would be like
- 4:39the holiday observed for the 4th of July.
- 4:41So we went on the Thursday and summer.
- 4:45We didn't see a single field trip
- 4:47like they had zoo camps going on, but not a single field trip.
- 4:50And then when we went to leave a couple hours after they had opened,
- 4:54one thing that the Houston Zoo is amazing and it's wonderful.
- 4:57But one thing about the Houston Zoo is that they have nowhere near enough
- 5:01parking for what they need.
- 5:02And so people are always circling,
- 5:04and it's looping the block and following you and parking illegally.
- 5:07There were a whole rows of parking spots open
- 5:12on a holiday week in the summer,
- 5:16which to me is really wild.
- 5:18On a day when it was pretty outside and not raining.
- 5:21Really, really wild.
- 5:23Disney wait times Disney wait times have been very, very low.
- 5:27Like uncommonly low for this time of year.
- 5:32And they said, oh, it's because people are watching the World Cup.
- 5:34It was because this was because that. No it's not.
- 5:36Wait times are down. How do I know this? Disney is feeling the pressure.
- 5:39How do I know that Disney is feeling the pressure?
- 5:41They are putting out ticket deals for the summer.
- 5:44They just reinstituted in Disneyland the after 5 p.m.
- 5:48ticket, which is sold at a significant discount.
- 5:51They would not be doing that
- 5:52if they were booked up, if they were full, if they had the sales to drive
- 5:56the volume, they are putting out ticket deals in summer.
- 5:59Unheard of, unheard of concerts.
- 6:02Concerts are being canceled across the country
- 6:06because the seats are going unsold, the seats are going unsold.
- 6:10And it is a multifold problem, right?
- 6:12Since the Ticketmaster, it's the fees, it's the predatory nature of the industry,
- 6:17but it's also a sign that people don't have that disposable income
- 6:20or they don't feel comfortable spending that disposable
- 6:22income on something that is so incredibly high price.
- 6:24Now, high prices across the board, prices have gotten out of hand.
- 6:27Grocery stores, the zoo, the Houston Zoo.
- 6:30Now you can get a one day ticket for $51.
- 6:35I have so much feeling about this.
- 6:37Okay, because one, I love our zoo, but that's absurd.
- 6:40Just because you can charge it does not mean you should,
- 6:42and you are instantly pricing out people who need access to zoos and museums.
- 6:47And I have a lot of feelings about that.
- 6:49And that's going to come back when I talk about the effects of these changes.
- 6:53Okay. Something that we have been doing.
- 6:55Both of our cars have well over 100,000 miles.
- 6:57We are knocking on 150, and we know that we are going to need to replace them
- 7:01minus ten years old.
- 7:02My husband's is like 15 years old.
- 7:04And so we have been watching because there's been several times
- 7:06when it's like, oh, paying attention.
- 7:08We know we're going to need to buy a car and we want to be prepared
- 7:10when the right time comes
- 7:11instead of kind of kind of being forced to make that decision for us.
- 7:15And so we have been paying attention. We have been tracking inventories.
- 7:18We've been tracking costs and rates.
- 7:19Interest rates are coming down to the interest rates
- 7:21on cars are finally, I'm seeing zero percents again,
- 7:23which I hadn't seen for a really long time.
- 7:26Not only that, inventory is on the lots.
- 7:29So now they are putting cars back out.
- 7:32You know, for a little while there was no inventory on lots at all, and
- 7:34they were selling everything above MSRP the same way the housing market was going.
- 7:38And so this is an indicator to me
- 7:41that that spending is slowing down, that we are entering a recession.
- 7:44And that takes me right into home sales homes.
- 7:46We're selling the same way now.
- 7:48We've got kind of like a market adjustment where like our property taxes
- 7:52came down wildly, wildly where we are in our new house.
- 7:57But I am seeing things.
- 7:58I saw a real from a guy who put out in Galveston,
- 8:00which is close to us, where right now, the rate that the houses are selling,
- 8:04the number of homes on the market equates to like an 18 month supply.
- 8:09And that's if nothing new goes on market, which is really, really crazy to me.
- 8:13So that is definitely shifting back
- 8:14to people who are not wanting to spend their money.
- 8:16They're not wanting to make the changes.
- 8:17They're not willing to pay the exorbitant prices with that.
- 8:20Travel deals.
- 8:21Travel deals have always been cyclical in that
- 8:23when kids are in school, you can get a great deals
- 8:25and it kind of always has followed the same kind of rhythm.
- 8:28Until Covid.
- 8:29Now, after Covid, people didn't care about taking their kids in and out of school.
- 8:32Everybody was like, YOLO, we got to live.
- 8:34Once we got to go spend our money, we got to go do fun stuff.
- 8:36It was all about prioritizing
- 8:38those experiences, which I do think it should be,
- 8:40but because of that, it really impacted those deals
- 8:42and the deals have come off the table, but they are coming back.
- 8:46So I am seeing the cyclical patterns being being kind of reintroduced
- 8:50into the mainstream.
- 8:51So you're seeing deals
- 8:52when you would expect to see deals and again, tracking things I want to do,
- 8:57I do that so that I know the best time to buy,
- 8:58and I do that so that I know the best time to save the most amount of money.
- 9:01And I do that so that I know what's going to work for us,
- 9:05because we have a travel system where we can travel pretty much any time.
- 9:08But in doing so,
- 9:09I can tell you that those deals
- 9:11are starting to fall back into the traditional patterns.
- 9:14Summer camps.
- 9:15Summer camps this year have gone unsold, so
- 9:20it nothing is selling out as far as summer camps go.
- 9:23And that is not normal.
- 9:25Normally they're all sold out in like April
- 9:28and people are scrambling, scrambling, scrambling.
- 9:29People are not paying summer camps.
- 9:31And again, summer camps are wildly expensive.
- 9:33It's such a luxury to be able to send your child
- 9:36to a place where you are paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars every week
- 9:38to make sure that they are cared for and entertained.
- 9:40It is such a high cost.
- 9:43Hi, hi.
- 9:45High cost item that I think people are realizing that it just isn't worth it.
- 9:49It's worth it to try to get a couple people together and
- 9:52and field out child care, or sending in with grandpa or,
- 9:56you know, people are staying home to watch their own kids.
- 9:59It summer camps are going unfilled.
- 10:01I got a deal because in Houston this is freaking herd of my kids
- 10:05took swimming lessons from like four months old until like ten.
- 10:10They took like weekly swimming lessons.
- 10:12And what we did, because it's Houston, there are we're close to the beach,
- 10:15there are pools everywhere, and it is hot most of the year.
- 10:18So in Houston, we would always pick up after Labor Day
- 10:21because again, we have that flexible schedule and then go through
- 10:25like spring break because
- 10:27I am spring break into summer, I'm not going near a swim school.
- 10:31No thank you not no way. Not know how.
- 10:33Now they are more prevalent than they used to be, but the one that my kids went
- 10:37to sent me a flier and they said that they are
- 10:41accepting offers because they have camps that are completely unsold.
- 10:45And so what they're going to do is they're just trying to get bodies in the place
- 10:49because they have weeks that are empty in summer in Houston for an indoor pool.
- 10:55Below is my mind swim classes I
- 10:57oh, it is so crazy to me now.
- 11:01Something I have noticed personally is that people are not committing
- 11:05signing up for spending money on homeschool extras.
- 11:08You guys know I host a science class and this year it took a very long time
- 11:12to get it full because people just aren't wanting to commit.
- 11:16They're not
- 11:16wanting to commit to the schedule, and they're not wanting to commit to the
- 11:21to the cost of it.
- 11:23And I think more people are sending their kids back to school,
- 11:26or at least they want to keep an option to send their kids back to school.
- 11:29And I think that is because of the economy now a much darker turn in something
- 11:34I am seeing.
- 11:34Guys, I am in a major city, but there are a lot more domestic situations happening.
- 11:39I'm seeing a lot more,
- 11:41you know, one parent kind of abandoning the family and the moms
- 11:44groups and a lot more Swat situations where people are making very,
- 11:50very permanent decisions
- 11:51for everyone in their home based on their economic situation.
- 11:55So it is dark and it is scary.
- 11:59And these are all of the reasons why I think that we are rapidly approaching
- 12:03a situation that is going to be very, very negative for most.
- 12:06But here is what I think is going to happen.
- 12:08Not only are there travel deals going to come back,
- 12:10that's going to be really awesome, I think.
- 12:11I don't know if you guys know this or if you've experienced this, but for me,
- 12:15since Covid started, you no longer can go.
- 12:17I used to be able to go grocery shopping like 10 a.m.
- 12:19on a Tuesday, and it was a ghost town.
- 12:21The grocery store is always busy now, always all the time,
- 12:25and so I am hoping that
- 12:26those start to go back to normal, because that would be awesome
- 12:30if I could grocery shop without a million people there.
- 12:32Okay, so I do expect those travel deals to return as well.
- 12:35Something that I think is going to go by the wayside is the specialty things.
- 12:39So I think doggie daycares, the high end doggie fresh food,
- 12:43I think those are going to go because if we can't all eat,
- 12:45the dog's not eating special food, you know what I'm saying?
- 12:47So I think doggy daycare, doggie food, those
- 12:50those pet fanciness, I think that's going to go.
- 12:53I also think that kids sports and little league
- 12:58things are going to swing back into being not only affordable,
- 13:02but a reasonable schedule, because I just don't think
- 13:04people can commit at the level they're wanting us to commit.
- 13:06And I think, you know, a lot of the first things that are going to go
- 13:09are going to be those high price items.
- 13:11So maybe the kid who's really, really good at soccer
- 13:12chooses YMCA this season instead of travel soccer.
- 13:15I don't know, I think that's going to happen.
- 13:17I think as scape rooms and those kind of like really high cost
- 13:22one hour entertainment things, I think those are going to go.
- 13:26They are one of the things that I honestly think
- 13:29is kind of like a, a temporary thing.
- 13:32I think they've lasted longer than I ever expected them to, because I do think
- 13:36that the novelty wears off, especially because it is,
- 13:39you know, if you're an escape room
- 13:40and you've got four rooms, those four rooms are kind of set
- 13:42until you can, you know, it's a big investment
- 13:45to get those things rolled over.
- 13:46But I think people just are not going to spend the money because like,
- 13:49I know for my family it is easily, you know, 150, 100, 200
- 13:53bucks for an hour's worth of entertainment.
- 13:55And I could spend that very, very differently.
- 13:57I think movies at movie theaters and bowling, things like that,
- 14:02where it is like a single use facility, those prices are going to come down.
- 14:07You can.
- 14:07Have you paid to go to a movie recently?
- 14:09I missed the dollar movie from when I was little
- 14:11where you could really go for like five bucks and like live at large.
- 14:14No, no, now I mean 30 bucks for a movie.
- 14:17No, no. And same thing with bowling.
- 14:20Bullying is easily hundreds of dollars roller skating, things like that.
- 14:24It's no longer the low cost fund that it used to be.
- 14:27And I think those things are going to come down, I really do.
- 14:29I think car prices and home prices are also going to come down.
- 14:32I don't think they'll be what they were, but they're going to come down.
- 14:35I think the cost of zoos and museums is going to come down.
- 14:37I feel like everybody kind of found out that they could charge a ton of money,
- 14:40and then they did, and nobody took into account if they should.
- 14:43So I think grocery prices, zoo tickets, museum things, all of those
- 14:48I think are going to come down
- 14:48because attendance is going to wane when people cannot afford it.
- 14:51The same thing that we're going to see happening with Disney
- 14:53and theme parks and things like that, because your choice is to lower
- 14:57costs to get people in, sit there empty or shutter entirely.
- 15:01And I think a lot of places are going to come back
- 15:03into the realm of being affordable,
- 15:05because so many have exceeded the threshold of what makes sense
- 15:09now, the really dark things that I think we're going to see.
- 15:12Not that it's dark, not that it's bad, but I think
- 15:13moms are going to be going back to work.
- 15:15That second parent, we've had the luxury of having a parent at home.
- 15:18I think those people are going to be going
- 15:20more into the workforce and whether that is side hustles.
- 15:24But more than likely, I think it's going to be a 9 to 5 brick and mortar.
- 15:28So I think that is definitely going to be the case.
- 15:30And as a result of that, I think the homeschool movement
- 15:32is going to shrink because I think there will be more kids
- 15:34put back in school because it is childcare and because it is already paid for.
- 15:38I also think that the divorce rate is going to spike because,
- 15:43you know, financial stress is a leading cause of divorce, and these are
- 15:46all things that are going to put a lot of stress, a lot of change,
- 15:49a lot of movement is going to be had in families and in homes.
- 15:55So this is what I think is going to be happening.
- 15:57I think we might even see more multigenerational family dwellings
- 16:01because of the cost.
- 16:03The cost is really crazy right now, and we've got shrinks
- 16:06and other things I've noticed is like, even like subscriptions.
- 16:09So like my podcast service was like 7.99 a month
- 16:13and it jumped up to 12.99, like you're it's almost double.
- 16:18You're telling me it's almost double is how much your costs went up.
- 16:22Same thing with like Microsoft subscriptions.
- 16:25All of the things where it's like it didn't go up, you know, 10%, 20%.
- 16:29It went up like 80% or 100%.
- 16:32So I think a lot of these situations are going to come back down,
- 16:37obviously not to where they were,
- 16:38but I think costs are going to kind of get a little bit more reasonable.
- 16:42And that's going to be because everybody's in a hard place,
- 16:45which isn't great, and it's not something that I want to see.
- 16:47And again, I'm not an economist.
- 16:49I'm not somebody who understands the intricacies of all of this
- 16:52or inflation or how we got here or how we're going to get out.
- 16:55I'm not saying any of that.
- 16:56What I'm saying is this is what I'm seeing,
- 16:58and this is what I think is going to happen,
- 17:00because these are the things that I think are just genuinely unsustainable.
- 17:04So I'm very curious to hear what your thoughts are.
- 17:07I would love to hear.
- 17:08Have you noticed that daycares aren't filling up?
- 17:11Have you noticed that that swim classes are empty and camps haven't sold out?
- 17:17What are you seeing as a parent?
- 17:19Are there less things at, you know, maybe a resale shop
- 17:23because people are wearing them longer?
- 17:24Are there less deals on kids clothes?
- 17:26More deals on kids clothes?
- 17:27What are you seeing out in the world with your own eyes that let you,
- 17:32as the person who does have your thumb
- 17:34on the pulse of the real world because you're out in it every day?
- 17:37What are you seeing?
- 17:38What are we not talking about that we should be talking about?
- 17:40Because if we can help prep ourselves, we will be ready for whatever
- 17:45snacks at least slightly ready for whatever's next.
- 17:48Any questions? Comments concerns guys? Let me know.
