Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party of the bridge to get you from one
- 0:37Speaker 1: full episode or disgrace slent to the other the backyard
- 0:39Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we are
- 0:43Speaker 1: talking about sly Stone, Brian Jones, succession, my George Benson,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Cherry and of course your voicemails, text, dms and more
- 0:52Speaker 1: and as always, a whole lot of rosie. All Right, Disco,
- 0:56Speaker 1: let's get into it. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, thank
- 1:15Speaker 1: you for letting me be myself again. It's sly Stone
- 1:18Speaker 1: Week here in Disgraceland. Because not to overstate the obvious,
- 1:22Speaker 1: but we just released our sly Stone episode in the
- 1:25Speaker 1: Disgraceland Feed this week, and I've got sixties crossover funk
- 1:28Speaker 1: soul Stylin's ONMBI Brain sly Stone. The question is this,
- 1:34Speaker 1: is there a greater waste of raw talent in the
- 1:36Speaker 1: history of pop music. I know, we get a lot
- 1:39Speaker 1: on of sly Stone, sly and the Family, Stone sly
- 1:41Speaker 1: Stone solo, but it just feels like there was so
- 1:46Speaker 1: much more to get from this artist, and he could
- 1:49Speaker 1: have given us a lot more great music. So I
- 1:55Speaker 1: was thinking, you know, excluding artists who have died, which
- 1:59Speaker 1: living artists among us has as much talent as sly
- 2:04Speaker 1: Stone but is no longer in the game, and who
- 2:07Speaker 1: hasn't been in the game for decades since their chart
- 2:10Speaker 1: dominance or their cultural relevance or however we want to
- 2:13Speaker 1: measure it. Sly Stone's wasted talent for reasons that we
- 2:18Speaker 1: document in this episode that we just released is massive.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It's like, you know, it'd be like if you know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two Neil Young was like later, I'm out,
- 2:28Speaker 1: or you know, what if Prince just after like you know,
- 2:32Speaker 1: the second record stopped making records, or Stevie Wonder went
- 2:35Speaker 1: dark after you know, his first few albums. The what
- 2:39Speaker 1: if surrounding sly Stone, they're immense. He's still alive, He's somewhere.
- 2:43Speaker 1: He's eighty years old, presumably up to something other than
- 2:46Speaker 1: making music. I mean, eighty, you know, tough to be active.
- 2:50Speaker 1: At eighty. I get that, but there was a lot
- 2:52Speaker 1: of years leading up to that eighty year old birth
- 2:55Speaker 1: date and sly, you know, he's got issues, wasn't making music,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and I feel like he could have been one of
- 3:03Speaker 1: the greatest of all time. And I don't know what
- 3:05Speaker 1: he's up to. Baby's watching clips of himself on Letterman
- 3:07Speaker 1: from back in the day. But whatever he's doing, I
- 3:09Speaker 1: hope he's keeping it funky. His music is missed. We
- 3:13Speaker 1: still have those great records to go back to. Check
- 3:16Speaker 1: out the Size Stone episode in Disgraceland and speaking of
- 3:21Speaker 1: wasted talent, over on our YouTube page. This past week,
- 3:25Speaker 1: we rebooted our Brian Jones story. This is, of course,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the little Brian Jones story inside of the Brian Jones
- 3:35Speaker 1: episode story that we released as part of season two
- 3:40Speaker 1: of Disgraceland. Back then, when I started the podcast, I
- 3:46Speaker 1: had this vision of releasing a Stone's episode in every season,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and in season one we did the Keith Richards story
- 3:55Speaker 1: about Maggie Trudeau and the heroin Bust, and then in
- 3:59Speaker 1: season two we did Brian Jones. And of course you know,
- 4:02Speaker 1: we've done altamont egx all on Main Street, a bunch
- 4:04Speaker 1: of other Rolling Stone stuff. Not quite every season a
- 4:09Speaker 1: Rolling Stones episode, but uh a lot. We've done six
- 4:13Speaker 1: episodes on The Stones, and the Brian Jones one was
- 4:15Speaker 1: the second one that we did. And when I wrote
- 4:19Speaker 1: this episode, there was this this moment I had when
- 4:24Speaker 1: I was writing it, trying to to to squish in
- 4:28Speaker 1: all the debauchery and all the scandal and all the
- 4:32Speaker 1: just insane, insane behavior of Brian Jones. First of all,
- 4:38Speaker 1: hot take, not really hot take, you know Mick jaggeran Keith,
- 4:40Speaker 1: which has got a lot of shit for kicking Brian
- 4:42Speaker 1: Jones out of the band. I mean it was his band,
- 4:43Speaker 1: he started the band, but he was just completely dysfunctional,
- 4:48Speaker 1: impossible to be in a band with. And of course,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you know, I get it, so you know, for all
- 4:55Speaker 1: those all the reasons that he was impossible to be
- 4:57Speaker 1: in a band with. I tried documenting them in that episode,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and as I was writing it and stacking them all
- 5:02Speaker 1: up one after another, it just started to remind me
- 5:04Speaker 1: of this sort of like relentless, like just boom boom boom,
- 5:08Speaker 1: boom boom, just pummeling of events. And I was like,
- 5:12Speaker 1: what is this remind me of? And it reminded me
- 5:13Speaker 1: of that great Roger Avery movie from the early two thousand.
- 5:17Speaker 1: It's called Rules of Attraction, and there's a movie within
- 5:19Speaker 1: that movie called Victor Takes a Trip. If you know
- 5:22Speaker 1: Rules of Attraction, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So I looked up Victor Takes a Trip. I got
- 5:27Speaker 1: the script and I lined it up and I wrote
- 5:30Speaker 1: the Brian Jones stuff beat for beat with Victor Takes
- 5:33Speaker 1: a Trip, and then we got some cool visuals we
- 5:35Speaker 1: put that to it. It's up on YouTube now and
- 5:38Speaker 1: it's pretty freaking awesome. I think if you know this episode,
- 5:42Speaker 1: the Brian Jones episode of Disgrace Signed, you're definitely gonna
- 5:44Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about here, and you're probably gonna
- 5:47Speaker 1: be excited to see this video. If you don't know
- 5:49Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, check it out and then go
- 5:52Speaker 1: watch Rules of Attraction. That's I know, it's not the
- 5:54Speaker 1: recommendation's part of the show yet, but that movie is
- 5:56Speaker 1: fucking great. To Bertie Stonella's novel that was adapted by
- 6:00Speaker 1: Roger Avery. Roger Avery, of course, was quitting Tarantino's co
- 6:04Speaker 1: worker back at that movie rental place that they worked
- 6:09Speaker 1: at when they were kids, and he co wrote pulp fiction,
- 6:12Speaker 1: Just an awesome movie, Rules of Attraction. So the Brian
- 6:16Speaker 1: Jones take on Victor Takes a Trip is up on
- 6:18Speaker 1: our YouTube channel right now. That is YouTube dot com
- 6:21Speaker 1: slash at Disgraceland Pod. If you're not subscribed, I say
- 6:26Speaker 1: it every week, get over there, people, subscribe. You're getting
- 6:28Speaker 1: a bunch of music and true crime content there that
- 6:31Speaker 1: you're not getting here in the podcast feed. We're releasing
- 6:34Speaker 1: daily shorts, We've got a bunch of got a bunch
- 6:38Speaker 1: of deep dive videos on ancillary music and true crime
- 6:41Speaker 1: stories that haven't yet been in the podcast. And of
- 6:45Speaker 1: course if you're just YouTube junkies, eventually we'll have the
- 6:48Speaker 1: podcast available over there as well, just like we have
- 6:50Speaker 1: it available here in the feed. So that is YouTube
- 6:53Speaker 1: dot com slash at Disgraceland Pod. That's over on YouTube,
- 6:58Speaker 1: but here in the feed. As usual, we are continuing
- 7:02Speaker 1: to release previously exclusive content into the disgraced Land feed.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Since the last after Party, we've dropped our archive episodes
- 7:11Speaker 1: that we've had that we've had sort of like locked
- 7:13Speaker 1: up under lock and key. These episodes are on jay
- 7:17Speaker 1: Z Little Richard, a two partner on Guns N' Roses
- 7:19Speaker 1: our Jim Morrison episode from April first, twenty nineteen, our
- 7:23Speaker 1: two partner on the Beach Boys. All of these are
- 7:25Speaker 1: available for you now wherever you get your podcasts. If
- 7:28Speaker 1: you haven't heard these episodes before, now is your chance.
- 7:32Speaker 1: They're available. Like I said, wherever podcasts are available. And
- 7:35Speaker 1: we are of course releasing more previously exclusive content in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the coming days, with episodes on the Who, Tiger King, Run, DMC,
- 7:42Speaker 1: Ozzy Osbourne and Nipsey Hustle, all in the lead up
- 7:45Speaker 1: to our next new episode for season eleven, which we
- 7:49Speaker 1: are releasing this coming Tuesday on the MC five. So,
- 7:53Speaker 1: as usual, lots and lots of disgrace slamed content for
- 7:57Speaker 1: you to wrap your ears around in the coming days.
- 8:00Speaker 1: All right, so you will be busy. I got to
- 8:03Speaker 1: clean something up from the last after party. I was
- 8:06Speaker 1: responding to a texter or a voicemail, I can't remember which,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and they requested a Joy Division episode, to which I said,
- 8:15Speaker 1: there is one coming, have no fear, there's one coming
- 8:17Speaker 1: soon in season twelve of Disgracedlam. But I was incorrect.
- 8:22Speaker 1: It is a new Order episode, not a Joy Division episode.
- 8:25Speaker 1: You can forgive me for the mistake. It's an obvious one.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I spoke and I didn't correct myself, so you know
- 8:30Speaker 1: I didn't realize the mistake at the time. I got
- 8:33Speaker 1: someone flagged before me, my guy Taylor did. We got
- 8:35Speaker 1: it cleaned up right now. That's New Order, not Joy Division,
- 8:39Speaker 1: but for Joy Division fans, you will be satisfied with
- 8:42Speaker 1: the New Order episode. So I am going to take
- 8:46Speaker 1: a quick break and I will be back in flash
- 8:48Speaker 1: with your voicemails, your texts, and your dms. All right,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you guys know the drill. These bonus episodes. There's an
- 9:16Speaker 1: ongoing conversation between me and all of you, and I
- 9:19Speaker 1: love it. I wish I could do more of it.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I want to find a way to do more of it.
- 9:24Speaker 1: For right now we get it into these bonus episodes.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm digging it. Keep it coming. You're hitting me up
- 9:28Speaker 1: on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Facebook at disgracelam pod. You
- 9:32Speaker 1: know that I respond sometime. I respond right in this episode,
- 9:34Speaker 1: And of course you can call me and leave me
- 9:37Speaker 1: a voicemail or a text at six one seven nine
- 9:41Speaker 1: zero six six six three eight, just like this listener
- 9:44Speaker 1: from the nine to one four.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Hey there, love the show. I'm in the middle of
- 9:49Speaker 2: listening to the Beach Boys episodes, and one thing I
- 9:53Speaker 2: love so much about it is you're really kind of
- 9:57Speaker 2: just exposing this Sixties for what they really were and
- 10:03Speaker 2: the junk that we've been said about the sixties it's
- 10:07Speaker 2: just not true. So thanks for what you're doing, and
- 10:10Speaker 2: I'm going to go back to listening.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Bye.
- 10:13Speaker 1: All right, thanks for the message. Yes, the myth of
- 10:16Speaker 1: the sixties. I had a lot to say about that
- 10:18Speaker 1: in the Beach Boys episodes, and just so you know,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I go a little deeper with some quantifiable facts about
- 10:25Speaker 1: that myth in the two part Woodstock episode Woodstock Episodes
- 10:30Speaker 1: that I did back in God, I.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Don't even know.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'm not going to pretend to know when I released,
- 10:34Speaker 1: so I think it was the end of twenty twenty one.
- 10:37Speaker 1: So go back check out those those Woodstock episodes for
- 10:41Speaker 1: more on this myth of the sixties. Take that I
- 10:44Speaker 1: have that's in your disgrace line feed Those are out now.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Thank you for calling, appreciate it leaving a voicemail. Let's
- 10:51Speaker 1: do another one. Let's check in with the six four six.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Hey man, how you throwing? This is Kevin from New
- 10:57Speaker 3: York City periodically to ask you about the Mets and
- 11:01Speaker 3: the nickt and or saying bro In, I've said your fitch.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It like that. I'm the one that sends you the
- 11:07Speaker 3: fitches of the Mobster Grave site. In any event, Man,
- 11:10Speaker 3: I just had to call you. Man, this show is amazing.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Your content is brilliant. I love history and I love
- 11:18Speaker 3: to be entertained, and man, you just rock out. Man,
- 11:21Speaker 3: You're awesome. I appreciate you. Thank you, thank you, thank you,
- 11:27Speaker 3: and go next.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Kevin my Man. Good to hear your voice in the
- 11:31Speaker 1: match it up to the text. Thank you for calling in.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Thanks for the kind words. Dude, dude, more Mobster Greystone
- 11:37Speaker 1: picks might mightily appreciated here. So you know, when you
- 11:40Speaker 1: have time, no big deal, get around to it. I
- 11:43Speaker 1: can get with the Mets as my national league team.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I've liked them since I was a little kid. You know,
- 11:50Speaker 1: largely when you're a little kid, you're picking teens beyond
- 11:52Speaker 1: your little local team. You sir, you know you go
- 11:54Speaker 1: with the uniforms. And I like that blue and that orange.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I like those blue pinstripes. I don't know, I don't know,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I don't know why. I like Doc Gooden, I like
- 12:00Speaker 1: Daryl Strawberry, I Dug Keith Hernandez, that whole thing. I
- 12:04Speaker 1: still like those guys, crazy as they are. Anyways, Yeah,
- 12:08Speaker 1: the Mets. I can get with the Mets. Like I said,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I can get with the Mets, especially because my Red
- 12:11Speaker 1: Sox aren't going to crack five hundred this year. I
- 12:13Speaker 1: don't think they're gonna be horrible. But dude, I can't
- 12:16Speaker 1: get with the Knicks despite the uniform color scheme. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: hit me back, Kevin, whenever you get a chance. Talk
- 12:23Speaker 1: more sports, more mafia guys, dead mobster's gravestones. All right,
- 12:28Speaker 1: thanks for listening, dude. All right, let's uh, let's see
- 12:32Speaker 1: what we got here. Let's do you know what? I
- 12:34Speaker 1: have not done this before. I don't think I don't
- 12:36Speaker 1: think I've I've played a voicemail from the same listener
- 12:40Speaker 1: more than once. I'm not going to make a habit
- 12:42Speaker 1: of that, but I just do something about this listener.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I like her. She's awesome. I like her energy that
- 12:48Speaker 1: she brings to these calls. This is Sherry from the
- 12:50Speaker 1: two one five. So Sherry, I'll repeat. Let's hear what
- 12:53Speaker 1: you get to say.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, goot Sherry over here. It's two one five.
- 12:59Speaker 2: First of all, you did honors to me. I asked
- 13:03Speaker 2: for Robin Williams, and I boohooed all the way through it.
- 13:08Speaker 2: But it was so wonderfully done.
- 13:11Speaker 3: You did the damn thing.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And now you're releasing Whitney Houston, so let me tell you,
- 13:19Speaker 2: I'm excited. Thank you for this good ship as always,
- 13:23Speaker 2: keep it rolling, rock and roller.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Thank you, Jay.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Hearts out to you.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Sherry, thanks for spreading the lu v love. Hope we
- 13:33Speaker 1: don't disappoint with the Whitney Houston episode. I hope you
- 13:36Speaker 1: dug it, and I'm happy to hear that you dug
- 13:39Speaker 1: the bad Lands episode on Robin Williams. We should, Sherry
- 13:42Speaker 1: and everybody else out there listening, we should have some
- 13:44Speaker 1: bad Lands news for all of you guys very shortly
- 13:47Speaker 1: that I think you're going to be excited about, all right,
- 13:49Speaker 1: lots of text, lots of texts on the top five
- 13:51Speaker 1: movie question, which I love. I love this. So we're
- 13:55Speaker 1: going to start here at the eight six y four. Jake,
- 13:57Speaker 1: it's a lane come to atl even though I'm from
- 14:00Speaker 1: Greenville actually small town of Fountain. In my top five
- 14:04Speaker 1: Tombstone number one, pulp fiction number two, my cousin Vinnie,
- 14:08Speaker 1: number three, Good Fellows number four, Steal Magnolias because I'm
- 14:12Speaker 1: Southern and well because Dolly. Also recommend Friday Night Lights
- 14:15Speaker 1: on Netflix. Seen it excellent, I know, and Shrinking on
- 14:20Speaker 1: Apple TV Jason Sigal and Harrison Ford funnier than you think.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I'm sure it is, but it's about loss and grief,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and I just you know, I can't. I don't know.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I don't get the space for shrinking right now. I
- 14:29Speaker 1: watch the trailer maybe sometime soon. If I'm wrong, if
- 14:32Speaker 1: it's not a bumb out right back and let me know.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Elane Laney, let's see Tombstone number one. God, I need
- 14:41Speaker 1: to rewatch Tombstone. I haven't given that it's I haven't
- 14:44Speaker 1: given that it's due. You're putting Tombstone above pulp fiction. Really, Lane, Really,
- 14:53Speaker 1: my cousin Vinnie, I feel that Goodfellas and Steel Magnolia
- 14:56Speaker 1: is good solid listen, Lane, thank you so much. I'm
- 14:59Speaker 1: gonna rewatch Humestone. I'll get back to you one of
- 15:01Speaker 1: these after parties, all right, from the five to one. Oh,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I also struggle with Jimmy Buffett. That's right, guys, I
- 15:09Speaker 1: was supposed to listen to early Jimmy Buffett. I said
- 15:12Speaker 1: I wouldn't the last after party, and you know what,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I didn't do it, but still I want to read
- 15:16Speaker 1: this text. So the five to one zero says I
- 15:18Speaker 1: also struggle with Jimmy Buffett. One thing made him a
- 15:21Speaker 1: teeny bit more palatable to me. I am an og
- 15:25Speaker 1: Star Wars fan from way back. Empire Strikes Back came
- 15:28Speaker 1: out when I was like six, and I forever changed.
- 15:30Speaker 1: So I found out that Harrison Ford was with Jimmy
- 15:32Speaker 1: Buffett when he got his ear pierced. There's a story there.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Harrison Ford pot Dealer to Michelle Phillips during the whole
- 15:39Speaker 1: Laurel Canyon scene. Hans solo Indiana Jones that he's rocking
- 15:42Speaker 1: it in the show shrinking, just saying that's another shrinking
- 15:45Speaker 1: reference too in a row. I didn't mean to do that.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Harrison Ford gives a nod to Jimmy Buffett, so it
- 15:51Speaker 1: made me lift my lifelong band of him. I mean,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I'm not suddenly a fan, but I let his music
- 15:55Speaker 1: play without always changing the channel. That's kind of where
- 15:57Speaker 1: I'm at there. Five to one zero five one zero
- 16:01Speaker 1: goes on to say, sometimes I still change the channel,
- 16:03Speaker 1: but no longer with disdain. Hope. That helps, definitely helps
- 16:08Speaker 1: excuse that sign of the background that is the garage downstairs,
- 16:11Speaker 1: the garage door opening up and closing. I think it's
- 16:14Speaker 1: gone now. Hey, so all right, that's another I don't know. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 1: that was very much about Hans Solo, but to me,
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's really about Jimmy Buffett and I didn't know Han Solo,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I didn't know Harrison Ford was dealing dope in Laurel Kenya.
- 16:27Speaker 1: But you learn maybe there's a bad Lands episode there
- 16:30Speaker 1: on Harrison Ford at some point. Thank you for that
- 16:34Speaker 1: awesome text. All right, let's do some more texts. Let's
- 16:37Speaker 1: see what we got, all right? From the nine to
- 16:40Speaker 1: one nine, Hi Ethan from the nine one nine, I
- 16:43Speaker 1: recently discovered and have been binge listening through work days
- 16:46Speaker 1: the lou Reed episodes. Holy shit, wild ride man, love
- 16:51Speaker 1: your work. Thanks Ethan, I really appreciate it. We took
- 16:55Speaker 1: a wild swing with those lou Reed episodes, went adam
- 17:00Speaker 1: completely different than we have other episodes in the past.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So it makes me very happy to receive some positive
- 17:07Speaker 1: feedback there about those low episodes. We've received quite a
- 17:09Speaker 1: bit of it, but you know, it's always it's always
- 17:13Speaker 1: gratifying when you take a risk and it pays off.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So thanks, man, appreciate that. Let's see what else do
- 17:18Speaker 1: we have? All right? From the seven to one four.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'm at Barnes and Noble right now, and look what
- 17:25Speaker 1: I found. And there's a picture of my book, the
- 17:28Speaker 1: Disgraceland book musicians getting away with murder and behaving very badly.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And the text goes on to say, real quick, I've
- 17:33Speaker 1: always wanted to ask you this. When you do an
- 17:35Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland or The twenty seven Club and you
- 17:39Speaker 1: do your research on the artist or band, does your
- 17:41Speaker 1: impression of them change it all? Especially the groups are
- 17:43Speaker 1: artists you're a big fan of. Do you ever find
- 17:45Speaker 1: yourself saying, man, I don't know if I can be
- 17:47Speaker 1: a fan of this band slash artist after what I
- 17:49Speaker 1: now know. It's a good question, and I don't know.
- 17:55Speaker 1: It's a tough one. I still don't have a good
- 17:57Speaker 1: answer for it. After five years of being asked this,
- 18:01Speaker 1: you know, not really you know, if anything, I know
- 18:04Speaker 1: this's gonna sound fucked up. I walk away with more
- 18:08Speaker 1: empathy than I had going in, despite whatever horrific behavior
- 18:14Speaker 1: has happened. And that's not a blanket statement. It doesn't
- 18:16Speaker 1: apply to every single artist that I've covered, obviously, but
- 18:21Speaker 1: with a lot of these subjects, you just get into
- 18:24Speaker 1: the backstory and you start to see how entirely fucked
- 18:27Speaker 1: up their lives were, and how the signs were there,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and how they're damaged and how you know, damage begets
- 18:34Speaker 1: more damage and it doesn't excuse anything. That's not what
- 18:38Speaker 1: I'm saying. You guys are intellectually advanced enough to understand
- 18:43Speaker 1: the nuance there. I'm not saying that that excuses anything.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I'm just saying that it counts. It counts for something.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I am an empathetic person. I can't help that. I
- 18:54Speaker 1: think most of us humans are, and I think the
- 18:57Speaker 1: older we get, the more we strive to be better
- 19:00Speaker 1: versions of ourselves and try to understand people a little
- 19:04Speaker 1: bit more than we did when we were younger. And
- 19:07Speaker 1: that causes me. All that in totality causes me to
- 19:10Speaker 1: sort of look at these artists with a little more
- 19:14Speaker 1: flexibility than I did going in. Of course, there are
- 19:19Speaker 1: examples where I walk away and I'm just like, fuck
- 19:23Speaker 1: this guy. I'm trying to think of one off the
- 19:26Speaker 1: top of my head right now, it's it's the usual suspects,
- 19:31Speaker 1: it's you know, it's the big lyric one. Of course,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to dwell on the negative.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I do enough of that in these episodes. But you know,
- 19:41Speaker 1: to me, a lot of these episodes, a lot of
- 19:43Speaker 1: these subjects, a lot of these stories, they're redemption stories
- 19:45Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. And of course when you
- 19:48Speaker 1: have redemption, a lot of times you have empathy. So
- 19:51Speaker 1: that might not be the answer you were looking for,
- 19:53Speaker 1: but that's that's the honest answer from my point of view.
- 19:57Speaker 1: All Right, we got another wheelchair text from somebody different.
- 20:00Speaker 1: This is from the eight to eight saying, oh wow,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I literally just got wheeled out of a colonoscopy and
- 20:05Speaker 1: I saw this, and I was like, what the fuck
- 20:07Speaker 1: am I hallucinating? Either way, something long form and video
- 20:10Speaker 1: form would have me captivated. I don't know what the
- 20:12Speaker 1: fuck this dude's talking about. And then just goes on
- 20:15Speaker 1: to say, top five flicks in my head, Jaws, sling Blade,
- 20:17Speaker 1: back to the Future, Magnolia, Rocky twenty eight days later.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I know, not the boilerplate top five, but there you go. Crap,
- 20:23Speaker 1: that's six kill the last one, the last one being
- 20:27Speaker 1: twenty eight days later, and uh, I've never seen that.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I get to check that out. I think that's is
- 20:32Speaker 1: that the Schwarzenegger one? No, is it? I don't know.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Back to the Future solid solid number three. I recently
- 20:42Speaker 1: read that script. It's flawless. That movie is flawless. Funny
- 20:48Speaker 1: story too. I have a very young son just turned five,
- 20:52Speaker 1: but about six months ago, when he was four, we
- 20:54Speaker 1: were watching Back to the Future and it was a
- 20:57Speaker 1: family movie night. We're sitting there. I'll make this quick.
- 20:59Speaker 1: We're sitting there. It's the part where Doc takes off
- 21:02Speaker 1: in the in the in the car for the first time. Right,
- 21:06Speaker 1: it's like the first time he blasts off into the past,
- 21:08Speaker 1: and as he does, my four and a half year
- 21:13Speaker 1: old at the time just goes, oh fuck. And it's
- 21:17Speaker 1: like this amazing point in a kid's life. Like the
- 21:20Speaker 1: parents will know this where the kids know the swear word,
- 21:24Speaker 1: but they don't yet know it's a swear So you
- 21:26Speaker 1: just kind of look at your your part, your your wife,
- 21:28Speaker 1: or you look at your husband, and you're you just
- 21:29Speaker 1: kind of like, uh, do we say anything? Of course
- 21:33Speaker 1: we didn't say anything. And even my my nine year
- 21:35Speaker 1: old was smart enough not to say anything. It was
- 21:37Speaker 1: just hysterical. But back to the future. Amazing, amazing movie
- 21:42Speaker 1: Top three. I love that Rocky's on here too. You know,
- 21:45Speaker 1: Rocky might be in my top five. I've always long
- 21:48Speaker 1: I've long thought Rocky is one of the greatest love
- 21:50Speaker 1: stories of all time. It's it's just, you know, it
- 21:54Speaker 1: doesn't get thought of in that way because of all
- 21:57Speaker 1: the machismo attached to it. I'n't believe me here for
- 22:00Speaker 1: the machismo. I'm here for the sports movie aspect of it.
- 22:02Speaker 1: But there's that just that end scene, man, that end scene.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And for the five of you out there who have
- 22:10Speaker 1: not yet seen Rocky, I'm not going to spoil it
- 22:13Speaker 1: for you. But if you're resisting because you think it's
- 22:15Speaker 1: just one big sweaty manifest you should watch it and
- 22:20Speaker 1: you'll be in. You might surprise yourself, you might be
- 22:22Speaker 1: into it. All right, what else we got? All right? Subject?
- 22:25Speaker 1: It's Patrick from the six h seven living in the
- 22:27Speaker 1: five to five Love Your podcast and started tooney, don't
- 22:32Speaker 1: know what that means. I'm a big true crime documentary
- 22:35Speaker 1: and any sort of music history buff. Your knight Stalker
- 22:38Speaker 1: recommendation by Tilla Russell have me craving for more any
- 22:41Speaker 1: other true crime documentary recommendations. Also top five movies in
- 22:44Speaker 1: my lifetime Shoshank Redemption, Jaws, Rocky Again, and Jaws and
- 22:48Speaker 1: Shoshank Redemption Again, Forrest Gump and Back to the Future Again.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Also not a big pulp fiction fan boo, but loved
- 22:55Speaker 1: qts once upon a time in Hollywood, So you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: I think we're getting some consensus here in the top five.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Joshank Redemption seems to be on most lists, as does
- 23:03Speaker 1: Jaws on my list for sure, a Rocky probably should
- 23:06Speaker 1: be on my list, and Back to the Future not
- 23:09Speaker 1: on my list, but it's close, close, close close, So
- 23:13Speaker 1: uh yeah, man, if I'm gonna recommend another documentary for you,
- 23:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna recommend to you Tiler Russell's new doc new
- 23:21Speaker 1: doc series called Waco American Apocalypse that's out now on Netflix.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Taylor was on the podcast a couple of weeks ago,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and check out his new series mini series. I have
- 23:32Speaker 1: not seen it yet, and when I get into the
- 23:35Speaker 1: recommendations part, you'll know why. I'm stuck in a different
- 23:38Speaker 1: TV wormhole at the moment, and I want to create
- 23:41Speaker 1: space for Taylor's new show. Stoked to see it? All right?
- 23:46Speaker 1: What else do we got here? Let's do some dms,
- 23:50Speaker 1: shall we? Because last week I did not do any dms?
- 23:54Speaker 1: All right? From Fred Noland on Instagram. Hi, please pardon
- 24:01Speaker 1: my sliding into your dms. Just wanted to say I
- 24:03Speaker 1: thoroughly enjoyed the Iggy Pop episode of disgrace Land. I'm
- 24:06Speaker 1: a big fan. You shared a great many things I
- 24:09Speaker 1: hadn't heard before. Always nice to learn. Also, I did
- 24:11Speaker 1: a comic about Iggy Pop a few years ago. I
- 24:14Speaker 1: thought you might enjoy it, so I'm sharing. So I'm
- 24:15Speaker 1: basically reading this text from Fred here because he sent
- 24:18Speaker 1: me the comic book, the digital version of it. It's
- 24:22Speaker 1: a couple pages, and it's fucking awesome. I'm gonna share this.
- 24:26Speaker 1: When you hear this, you'll be able to see on
- 24:28Speaker 1: my Instagram stories Fred's work. And if you're an Iggy
- 24:31Speaker 1: Pop fan, I think you're gonna dig it. So check
- 24:33Speaker 1: that out. Let's keep moving here. Another DM from Chris
- 24:38Speaker 1: on it. My old friend Chris here, who I've never
- 24:42Speaker 1: met but who I converse with quite frequently here has
- 24:47Speaker 1: made this disgrace Land mix, and by mix, I don't
- 24:49Speaker 1: mean playlist of songs. I mean an actual fucking DJ
- 24:53Speaker 1: mix of bangers that's beatmatched, that takes you want to
- 24:57Speaker 1: ride a roller coaster ride. It's relevant to the Disgraceland artists.
- 25:02Speaker 1: You're gonna hear little bits and pieces throughout. This mix
- 25:05Speaker 1: is fucking great. You can tell that Chris worked his
- 25:07Speaker 1: ass off on it. He's a very talented guy. And
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna post this. There's a link to the mix.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I'll post that, I'll tweet it out, and I'll also
- 25:16Speaker 1: put it on Instagram. I'm going to do this on
- 25:19Speaker 1: the day this episode is released, so you should hear it.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Then let's move on do some more dms. What else
- 25:25Speaker 1: do we got here? What else? Yep? This is from
- 25:28Speaker 1: Matthew Eric Jones nineteen eighty. I already responded to this.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Just a special shout out here in the after party
- 25:35Speaker 1: to Matthew Eric Jones nineteen eighty on Instagram. He got
- 25:38Speaker 1: a new zombie Elvis tattoo. Matthew, you're a legend. If
- 25:42Speaker 1: you any of you guys out there have Disgraceland tattoos,
- 25:44Speaker 1: I've seen him before, go ahead, obviously hit me up.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna share it. This is one of the cooler ones.
- 25:51Speaker 1: A couple weeks back, another sort of Disgraceland world tattoo appearance.
- 25:57Speaker 1: A friend of mine, I should say a puaintance, had
- 26:01Speaker 1: heard the Disgraceland episode on the Who and wherein I
- 26:06Speaker 1: described Keith Moon as a jet engine with octopus arms,
- 26:10Speaker 1: and she went and she actually got a jet engine
- 26:12Speaker 1: with octopus arms. She's a drummer and a Keith Moon
- 26:15Speaker 1: fan tattooed on her thigh and we use the image
- 26:18Speaker 1: of that in our Who video that's over on YouTube.
- 26:23Speaker 1: You can check that out. Tattoos fucking great. By the way,
- 26:25Speaker 1: I was like, damn it, why didn't I think of that? Okay,
- 26:28Speaker 1: let's see what do we got here. So another DM
- 26:31Speaker 1: from Coco Cookie, Hey Jay Copepol as well on your
- 26:35Speaker 1: next bonus episode, Can you please explain why Slash How
- 26:38Speaker 1: Boogie Nights is in so many men's top five films.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I remember watching and thinking it was good, but not
- 26:43Speaker 1: all that memorable. I also don't get how The Departed
- 26:45Speaker 1: doesn't cut it for you. I'm also tempted to rank
- 26:48Speaker 1: it above Casino my top five all right, pulp fiction,
- 26:51Speaker 1: Good Fellows, American Pop Heart and Souls and Kill Bill,
- 26:55Speaker 1: Thank you the four roh three and that is from
- 26:58Speaker 1: at Coco Cookie on Instagram. Well at Coco Cookie. Not
- 27:04Speaker 1: to speak for all the men out there. I'm certainly
- 27:07Speaker 1: not the spokes spokesman for male film watchers. Uh, but
- 27:12Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe it's the porn in Boogie Nights.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Certainly not from my perspective. I mean that movie is
- 27:21Speaker 1: unlike any movie I'd ever seen. When I went to
- 27:24Speaker 1: see it, I'd never seen anything like it before. It
- 27:26Speaker 1: was like now when I watch it, I can tell
- 27:29Speaker 1: why I responded to it the way I did. It
- 27:33Speaker 1: wasn't the porn aspect of it. I mean being in
- 27:35Speaker 1: the world of porn, sure, because we hadn't given we
- 27:39Speaker 1: hadn't yet been given that that sort of tour in culture.
- 27:44Speaker 1: The Internet was not here yet like it is now,
- 27:48Speaker 1: and porn wasn't as ubiquitous as it is now. There
- 27:50Speaker 1: was no such thing as only fans, and the sex
- 27:53Speaker 1: work industry was not what it is now. And that
- 27:57Speaker 1: was a view into it that was heavily stylized and
- 28:00Speaker 1: romanticized and also kind of raw and real at the
- 28:04Speaker 1: same time. And I think it was more about the
- 28:08Speaker 1: world than the actual porn and then Paul Thomas Anderson
- 28:12Speaker 1: just as a filmmaker, he just does things and did
- 28:15Speaker 1: things in that movie that hadn't been done before. And
- 28:18Speaker 1: I'm not smart enough sort of a critic of film
- 28:22Speaker 1: to really explain what those things are without doing a
- 28:25Speaker 1: lot of research. But I can't tell you. I felt
- 28:29Speaker 1: it viscerally and I still feel it when I rewatch it.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Not sure it's a male female thing, but maybe it is.
- 28:34Speaker 1: What do I know? I don't have a female perspective.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Any of the ladies out there have a burning hatred
- 28:38Speaker 1: for Boogie Nights by all means let me know. But
- 28:41Speaker 1: I think it's fucking great on your list though this
- 28:44Speaker 1: saw this especially because it's got one that I don't recognize,
- 28:48Speaker 1: Heart and Souls. You have ripped Tom Sizemore here. I've
- 28:50Speaker 1: never seen, nor don't I even know what Heart and
- 28:52Speaker 1: Souls is. And I'm intrigued and I'm psyched to check
- 28:55Speaker 1: it out. So thank you for writing all right. So
- 28:57Speaker 1: those are the DMS. Thank you everyone for writing in.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Continue to write in at Disgracelain, pod, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter,
- 29:05Speaker 1: and of course Instagram. You know, I found out a
- 29:10Speaker 1: couple months ago, about three months ago that we've been
- 29:14Speaker 1: what's called shadow band on Instagram. All that means is
- 29:18Speaker 1: our content has not been recommended going back two fucking
- 29:23Speaker 1: years now. I posted a friend a video from a
- 29:28Speaker 1: friend's band back in twenty twenty that had Charles Manson
- 29:34Speaker 1: in it, and I got dinged by the Instagram police
- 29:37Speaker 1: for the content like being violent content or some such designation.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Never noticed it, but I did notice that Instagram stopped growing,
- 29:49Speaker 1: and it was when we were exclusive as a podcast
- 29:53Speaker 1: on Amazon. So I was kind of like, maybe we're
- 29:55Speaker 1: just not growing because not as many people can hear
- 29:57Speaker 1: the podcast as I can otherwise. And when we came
- 30:00Speaker 1: out of the Amazon exclusivity, I looked into it. Sure enough,
- 30:05Speaker 1: I noticed, But I also noticed when we released the
- 30:07Speaker 1: Charles Manson episode of Disgrace and I'm Back in November
- 30:10Speaker 1: of twenty twenty two, we get dinged again for more
- 30:14Speaker 1: Charles Manson so called violent content, which is fucking ridiculous.
- 30:22Speaker 1: So anyways, our content on Instagram has not been being recommended.
- 30:26Speaker 1: We've not been growing there at all. I spend a
- 30:29Speaker 1: lot of time there just as a user, but also
- 30:33Speaker 1: engaging with you guys, and I don't know what's going
- 30:37Speaker 1: to happen. I got to get this fixed because there
- 30:39Speaker 1: are other platforms out there that maybe I take the
- 30:42Speaker 1: conversation there. I don't know, we'll see. We got to
- 30:45Speaker 1: fix this. We've been trying to get in touch with
- 30:47Speaker 1: Instagram going on four months now, and we are getting nowhere.
- 30:53Speaker 1: But yeah, if you're getting our content, congratulations. If you're
- 30:58Speaker 1: hearing this and you don't engage with us on Instagram,
- 31:01Speaker 1: but you yourself are on Instagram at disgraceland Pod, find us,
- 31:07Speaker 1: follow us, like us, comment, dm me whatever. Let's get
- 31:13Speaker 1: the fucking algorithm churning over there and show these knuckleheads
- 31:17Speaker 1: that we're not some stupid, like fucking hate mongering violent profile.
- 31:22Speaker 1: We're not, of course we're not. Anyhow, That's what's going
- 31:26Speaker 1: on over there. Just let you guys know what's up.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Hit me up wherever though Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok at
- 31:33Speaker 1: Disgraceland Pod. I'm gonna be back right after this. All right,
- 31:51Speaker 1: it's the recommendations part. This is the recommendation's part, the
- 31:54Speaker 1: part of the show where we recommend the things that
- 31:56Speaker 1: are worth recommending, the recommendations Partdtion's bard. Maybe that's what
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'll do. Maybe I'll punt on the cheesy ninety sitcom
- 32:04Speaker 1: music that I have planned for this and do a
- 32:06Speaker 1: death metal vocal numonic instead. I can do that on
- 32:09Speaker 1: my own. I don't need anyone at all to do that.
- 32:11Speaker 1: But you don't want to hear that. I don't either.
- 32:13Speaker 1: All Right, what I'm reading, what I'm watching, and what
- 32:14Speaker 1: I'm listening to. I'm gonna start this Week's what I'm
- 32:16Speaker 1: listening to. I'm listening to the Muddy Waters album Hard Again.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Who knows this record? Do you know this record? This
- 32:20Speaker 1: record is fucking incredible. I've known this record for a while,
- 32:23Speaker 1: note about it, been listening to it for forever. Get
- 32:26Speaker 1: it on vinyl. I listened to it in the car
- 32:28Speaker 1: all the time. I was listening to it again this
- 32:29Speaker 1: past weekend Sunday, I was driving out to my mom's
- 32:32Speaker 1: house and it just fucking hit me over the head,
- 32:34Speaker 1: little wallp. It's like, this is a record worth mentioning
- 32:37Speaker 1: because if I didn't know about this record, I would
- 32:40Speaker 1: want to know about this record. It is worth recommending.
- 32:43Speaker 1: It's by far my favorite Muddy Waters recording. You can
- 32:47Speaker 1: just in this album, man, it just sounds like dudes
- 32:49Speaker 1: having fun. You know you can hear the joy, the cool,
- 32:52Speaker 1: the confidence, the awesomeness of everyone who's playing on this album,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and almost every single note this is from nineteen seventy seven.
- 32:59Speaker 1: This record, it's it's electric, it's over the top, produced
- 33:02Speaker 1: by Johnny Winter. It swings fucking hard. You've heard the
- 33:07Speaker 1: version of Muddy's iconic mannagh boy, Wow Wow Wow from
- 33:10Speaker 1: this album so many times, so many times before. Even
- 33:13Speaker 1: if you don't know that you've heard it, you've heard it.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Trust me. It's been over licensed, overused in films, and
- 33:18Speaker 1: there's a reason because it's the definition of badass. But
- 33:21Speaker 1: when you hear it in the context of the full
- 33:22Speaker 1: album kicks off the album, you're just like, oh fucking a,
- 33:27Speaker 1: this this is music. But for me, it's less about
- 33:31Speaker 1: this track, this super famous track, and more about the
- 33:34Speaker 1: entire record. Not only is there not a bad song
- 33:37Speaker 1: on this album, there's not a bad moment. It is
- 33:39Speaker 1: truly great a plus Muddy Waters hard again, go get
- 33:43Speaker 1: some all right. This past weekend, now, in this past week,
- 33:46Speaker 1: not this past weekend, this past week and the last
- 33:48Speaker 1: week I somehow popped my George Benson Cherry, WHOA what
- 33:53Speaker 1: a monster guitar player? Monster musician. This is exactly, though,
- 33:57Speaker 1: the type of music that I hated as a kid,
- 34:00Speaker 1: even before I even really had any sort of musical
- 34:03Speaker 1: point of view. I would just hear this type of
- 34:04Speaker 1: shit and be like, stop, mom stop, I fucking hate it.
- 34:08Speaker 1: This is stuff my mother played in our Ford Explorer.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Explorer while she's fucking driving me around town the baseball
- 34:14Speaker 1: practiced chain smoking Winston's and getting attitudey about rolling down
- 34:18Speaker 1: the windows. This music is like bordering on smooth jazz.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Dare I say, but holy crap, I do not care.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It's incredible, and by it, I'm talking about the album
- 34:30Speaker 1: Breezing by George Benson. Here's what happened. I heard of
- 34:34Speaker 1: George Benson song last week and I took a picture
- 34:36Speaker 1: of it on Spotify or something, and I storied it
- 34:38Speaker 1: and someone hit me up. I don't have your name
- 34:42Speaker 1: or your Instagram handles, so forgive me. But someone hit
- 34:45Speaker 1: me up immediately and sent me this album Breezing by
- 34:49Speaker 1: George Benson. And thank you, because this record is so
- 34:53Speaker 1: fucking good. There aren't any hits on it. You know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: he's got hits, but they're not on this record. Maybe
- 35:00Speaker 1: they were hits and I'm just not aware. I didn't
- 35:02Speaker 1: recognize any of the actual songs on this album, but
- 35:04Speaker 1: I did recognize some of the beats, some of the
- 35:07Speaker 1: grooves because they've been if you're into hip hop, you'll
- 35:09Speaker 1: hear they've been sampled and repurposed at samples and hip
- 35:11Speaker 1: hop songs. George Benson, Let's Party Breezin is the album?
- 35:15Speaker 1: Go check that out?
- 35:17Speaker 3: All right?
- 35:17Speaker 1: What I'm reading? What am I reading? I'm you know,
- 35:19Speaker 1: I'm not really reading anything right now. It's New Testament
