- 0:00what's up everybody welcome to fanatically speaking
- 0:02i'm kent i'm log off i'm the log off legend and
- 0:05uh we're here to say everything that every fan
- 0:07is thinking but louder and probably a little
- 0:09crazier get ready this is fanatically speaking
- 0:12with kent and log off you know what's funny like
- 0:15i don't hate i don't i'm not a social media hater
- 0:18i'm a social media I don't want people to think
- 0:25that I get on the internet and start hating people
- 0:27on social media. That's not what I do. The first
- 0:29half was absolutely, absolutely horrible. You
- 0:33know, just inept offense, inept defense, special
- 0:37teams, you name it. I'm going to turn into Oprah.
- 0:41Why were you so angry? He sucks this season.
- 0:45This game, whatever, whatever's going on, right?
- 0:47And then in the very next pitch, guess what?
- 0:50They double Homer. And he's like, told you that.
- 0:53Why are you always knocking down people? Listen,
- 0:55you got the highs and the lows. Yeah, so I knew
- 0:58that. You need the highs and the lows. So I do
- 1:01that, yeah. I'm trying to be the voice of reason
- 1:04here. I am what I am. All right, what's up, everybody?
- 1:20Welcome to another episode of Fanatically Speaking.
- 1:22I'm Kent, co -host and promoter. I am Log Off,
- 1:26the Log Off legend, the hater of social media.
- 1:28I'm the co -host and producer of the show. All
- 1:31right. So today, the topics we're going to jump
- 1:35into are players in the NBA that we would like
- 1:38to see traded or could be traded. We think can
- 1:42be traded. We'd like to see traded. We're also
- 1:46going to hit into teams. That we'd like to see
- 1:49win a championship that are not our home team
- 1:52or a favorite team and then always fun topic
- 1:55Yeah, so alright, so but for the first one you
- 1:58said players That we want to see traded and we're
- 2:02talking about this season though, correct? So
- 2:04not like, you know, two three years from now
- 2:06like no, no, no This is like like fortune forecasting
- 2:09for teams like we're looking I'm looking I looked
- 2:11at some guys who were kind of stuck on rosters
- 2:14or the team is going nowhere and I'm like, yeah
- 2:17this guy should be you know, somewhere else or,
- 2:20or it's just kind of run as course. Um, okay.
- 2:23So I think that, I think they should be traded
- 2:25or again, uh, they could be traded. Okay. All
- 2:30right. Now some of these guys, you know, are
- 2:32going to be obvious. I'm pretty sure some of
- 2:35them will kind of come out of nowhere for some
- 2:36people, but who stuck out to you the most in
- 2:40terms of who you think should be traded and why.
- 2:46So so I'm gonna get to first. I'm gonna start
- 2:49with a couple of high profile names, okay? So
- 2:54recent we one we've talked about another we kind
- 2:56of dabbled But he's been in the news lately For
- 3:01four different reasons with his team. So Zion
- 3:05Williamson John Moran they came into lead together
- 3:09Joss has some success Zion is a beast when he
- 3:14plays Now John having trouble with his team with
- 3:18the coaching staff with management. They've suspended
- 3:21him He obviously had his off the court issues
- 3:24last year the last few years But but a star and
- 3:28has the talent both have the talent But those
- 3:31two stuck out at first because I'm like they
- 3:33need a they need a change of scenery Well, Memphis
- 3:36has no idea what they're doing anyways with their
- 3:38basketball team trading away guys firing coaches
- 3:42five games before the playoffs And then wondering
- 3:44why they have issues already this season with
- 3:47their star player. Okay. All right. Okay. What
- 3:52do you, so in terms of John Moran, now is this
- 3:58just because of the, the coaching issues with
- 4:02his new coach and you know, the, I mean, I kind
- 4:05of hate diminishing it to knucklehead behavior,
- 4:08but you know, he was suspended by, by the Grizzlies.
- 4:11you know there was some some issues about whether
- 4:13or not he wasn't put being put in games in certain
- 4:16situations had his minutes kind of cut but you
- 4:19know saying that he wasn't playing hard and then
- 4:21people put some stuff up on the internet how
- 4:23they do where they did a super cut of him in
- 4:26a particular game where you know he lets a guy
- 4:28blow by him you know he's not you know hustling
- 4:30back on defense but so changing and putting him
- 4:35on a different team what do you think that even
- 4:36does for him i think you put him And again, change
- 4:41the scenery, put them in a new, have a new team
- 4:44with a better opportunity, with a solid foundation.
- 4:50And I'm sorry. And one more thing I'm going to
- 4:52throw in there. I'm mad it slipped my mind. And
- 4:56by the way, and I want to set the table for this
- 4:58because I don't like the way this shit was portrayed
- 5:01in sports media. Did you see the post -game interview
- 5:05where he said that he didn't have a joy for playing
- 5:08basketball? Yeah, I did Okay, but I want us I
- 5:12want to set this up because I don't like the
- 5:14way they did this shit And I don't know if you
- 5:15caught this do you understand why he said that?
- 5:19Like no catch why he said that no go ahead a
- 5:22reporter asked him that question specifically
- 5:24It was a it was a setup question So the way the
- 5:29headlines read was something to the effect of
- 5:32John Morant says he doesn't have a joy for playing
- 5:34back You know what I mean, but that's not what
- 5:35he was asked the question about it someone introduced
- 5:39a lack of joy for a Superstar top pick in an
- 5:43NBA, you know on an NBA roster and asked him
- 5:46that question and that was what he said so, you
- 5:50know I'm gonna give him I've been hard on John
- 5:53Morant myself. I do think you know that he kind
- 5:55of makes He thinks he makes things messier for
- 5:57himself than he should But the last couple of
- 6:01weeks for him, I'm not gonna put this on him
- 6:03I think there's a lot of factors and on the whole
- 6:06I do agree with you that I think it would be
- 6:08better for him To get traded. I do think it'll
- 6:12be better for the Grizzlies to go ahead and move
- 6:14on from him I'm gonna shut up and let you go
- 6:17ahead and finish your point. No. Yeah, so my
- 6:19point with with Josh specifically is again They've
- 6:23done him no favors this is not about him right
- 6:26this is this is to me about the team again firing
- 6:30coaches five games for playoffs trading desmond
- 6:34bain so it's like what are you what is exactly
- 6:38the path in the west for the memphis grizzlies
- 6:40to win because last year they were having a good
- 6:42season and then they said we're gonna fire the
- 6:45coach and now you hear that they got issues with
- 6:48the coaching staff and obviously not using Ja
- 6:51correctly and he's your star player not putting
- 6:54the pieces around him like you should so for
- 6:57him it's kind of like it is what it is it happens
- 7:02Memphis is going nowhere so I like the idea of
- 7:05trading Ja I think you mentioned Miami in a text
- 7:08yeah I think I mentioned I mentioned that maybe
- 7:12Trey Young needs to be also another name on my
- 7:14list maybe just swap Ja and Trey and say you
- 7:17know Ja in Atlanta I like it Jai in Miami. I
- 7:20like it. I've been hearing I see online ESPN
- 7:23put a list together too for John It was like,
- 7:25Minnesota They always named Sacramento. I Think
- 7:30that was the only teams I saw I May be missing
- 7:34I may be missing one They want to bring up Houston
- 7:37in every trade just to add more names to that
- 7:39team But I really like that Atlanta. But again,
- 7:43this is this is again a more about the team The
- 7:46Grizzlies can trade them get some value I don't
- 7:50think they're going to be going anywhere in the
- 7:51West anytime soon. So again, just cut ties in
- 7:56this relationship. Let him, you know, revive
- 8:00his career somewhere else. I like the Trey Young
- 8:02trade only he's hurt right now. So obviously
- 8:04they can't do anything, but I think Atlanta could
- 8:08use some spark. Maybe it's run this course there.
- 8:12And again, it would be a star for star trade.
- 8:14And then the Zion is still, I don't know what
- 8:17value get for him. But again, New Orleans, we
- 8:20talked about them before. I don't think they're
- 8:22going anywhere. So I don't think they're going
- 8:26anywhere with Zion. I don't think they're going
- 8:27anywhere without them. So it's kind of like just
- 8:30trade them. A team will take a shot, a chance
- 8:34thinking maybe they can one, get them healthy
- 8:38and protect his hamstrings. And so I don't know.
- 8:43I don't know what trade that is. But I think
- 8:46both of them, it would be beneficial to just
- 8:48kind of cut ties. Okay. And, um, and I'll agree
- 8:52with that, uh, just in terms, as a fan, you know,
- 8:56uh, that is it's in the show's name fanatic speaking.
- 9:00So as a fan, sure, that'd be great. The last,
- 9:03I want you to think about this. I want you to
- 9:05think about the last trade in the NBA that you
- 9:07can come to mind for the last star for another
- 9:12star where the caliber of players were, you know,
- 9:16pretty, pretty close in terms of where they were
- 9:18at that point in their careers. Does anything
- 9:21come to mind for you in the NBA? Luca for AD,
- 9:24star for star. That is a good one. How did I
- 9:26forget it? I don't know how we both forgot, but
- 9:27it came back because the Mavericks were willing
- 9:30to trade a superstar player who just took them
- 9:37to the finals. If not top five player in the
- 9:40world. And they traded them to LA for an injury
- 9:44prone Anthony Davis. James Harden, Ben Simmons
- 9:48trade. Okay. So it was, you know, the Sixers
- 9:51and the Nets. Okay. So it was, you know, uh,
- 9:55the Sixers, you know, they were able to trade
- 9:58for Harden. bring him in. But in the other big
- 10:01name in that trade was Ben Simmons, number one
- 10:03overall pick. Now, Ben Simmons fell off a cliff
- 10:06after that, we know. But at that time, he was
- 10:09still number one overall pick, you know, six,
- 10:12seven, six, eight, you know, could pass, couldn't
- 10:15shoot. You know, he had some kind of some issues
- 10:17whether or not you didn't know what type of player
- 10:19he was going to be. But we all thought he had
- 10:21potential. Just looking at the list, you're looking
- 10:24at the Desmond Bain trade. You know, had four
- 10:28first round picks in it. Yeah. You know, the
- 10:32Rudy Gobert trade had five picks have had, you
- 10:35know, first round picks all over. Everybody was
- 10:38like, wait, wait, Rudy Gobert is going for that
- 10:39many picks, you know, to go to Minnesota. Yeah.
- 10:43Michael Bridges. Same thing. You know, Brooklyn
- 10:46to the Knicks. I can't I don't even think I can
- 10:49name any players who were in that trade off the
- 10:51top of my head. And then there's one more that.
- 10:56that's good oh and then the katie trade you know
- 10:59to the sons what about the houston the houston
- 11:04one too but i mean but who did he who is he traded
- 11:09for well i mean jalen green would be the biggest
- 11:13name that's what i mean and it's like we're not
- 11:17in the star yeah they're not on the level of
- 11:20john moran trey young There you go. That's what
- 11:23I mean or or it's something that we like you
- 11:25said it We were talking about in the text when
- 11:27I said John Moran and I said John Moran for Tyler
- 11:30hero Those are names that you know, right? Yeah,
- 11:33you can and if you want to be honest you get
- 11:36I know you'd probably rather have John Moran
- 11:38But Tyler heroes a hell of a player too. Yeah,
- 11:41I just don't I don't know I don't know if Miami
- 11:43will trade him Probably not but not even for
- 11:47John not even for John. I mean, I mean I would
- 11:51Well, no, we would we would I'm just thinking
- 11:53about Miami and their system and you know that
- 11:56heat culture that I don't know if they would
- 11:59but But again in I like Atlanta for job, but
- 12:08And again and again, I think last year I heard,
- 12:11you know lamello for job Yeah, well and that's
- 12:15the thing I mean and I think I think they're
- 12:17both about the same caliber a player both athletic
- 12:20guards Both of them could get you a bucket You
- 12:24know, obviously one of them has a you know, John
- 12:26Morant has a better track record of winning Yeah,
- 12:29you know and that's just not something that LaMelo
- 12:30has but and of course Josh had has an injury
- 12:33history, too So it's a roll of the dice on those
- 12:35two players Okay, so other names that I'd like
- 12:46to see traded or or not Well, they could be some
- 12:49some of our big names pretty big names But some
- 12:52are not some are just kind of they're young and
- 12:54they're they're lost on teams They're either
- 12:56not getting to play or or they're just on bad
- 12:59teams So I got different reasons one is Dalton
- 13:02connect For the Lakers if you if you notice and
- 13:06watch Look at their their games. Look at those
- 13:09box scores. He's not getting a lot of minutes.
- 13:11He's got a lot of talent showed a lot of promise
- 13:13last year. He got traded to the Hornets and then
- 13:17that got nullified. So back in LA. Lucas back
- 13:22this year healthy well, somewhat healthy. He's
- 13:26back and forth. Austin Rees is playing well.
- 13:28They went got Marcus smart, so don't connects
- 13:30kind of lost his spot in LA. So they're playing
- 13:34really good basketball. They're gonna get LeBron
- 13:36back I think if they would again trade Dalton
- 13:39connect to a team that could use him maybe even
- 13:42Charlotte You know give him a chance to to to
- 13:47play like he was playing last year, but get the
- 13:49playing time I'm just gonna rattle off a few
- 13:51more names. No, don't that's a great one. I've
- 13:54got some notes on him Cam Thomas is another one.
- 13:58Nobody wanted to give him a contract this season.
- 14:00So he took like Not a minimum deal, but he took
- 14:03a really low number to stay a team, a team, a
- 14:06team, healthy, friendly. Yeah, I got you in Brooklyn.
- 14:11Dude can score. He can ball. The nets are going
- 14:15nowhere. Trade him somewhere so he can maybe
- 14:18get a different deal, different team. I don't
- 14:21know that they will. I would just like to see
- 14:22him on a on a on another team. I think he could
- 14:25help someone else. And then a couple of veterans.
- 14:30One may surprise you, one may not. I don't know.
- 14:33One guy's gotten traded a lot. I don't want to
- 14:35see him in Portland as Drew Holiday. I don't
- 14:39think that team's really going anywhere. I know
- 14:41they're playing well right now, but I think you
- 14:44plug him on a team that has a shot, that just
- 14:47catapults them to the front. And then the other
- 14:50- He's a difference maker. He might be like at,
- 14:54like at - As a as a as a true true NBA fan, I
- 15:00love that guy as a player. Yeah, it is an impact
- 15:02player and I agree with you. If you put him on
- 15:04a team that's right on the cusp. Yeah, I think
- 15:07he's enough to put them over the edge. That's
- 15:09that's a great name and the Blazers would get
- 15:11value. They would get value for him, but I mean,
- 15:16but he's also older. And he's moved around a
- 15:20lot. I kind of want that dude, I kind of want
- 15:22him to sit still for a bit. I know it's in the
- 15:25job to kind of get bounced around as an older
- 15:28player, I know, but he's played for a lot of
- 15:32teams, man. He's played for a lot of teams. And
- 15:34I'm going to be honest, I didn't look up what
- 15:36he's got left on the contract. I know he gets
- 15:38paid pretty well. That's why the Celtics traded
- 15:40him. So there would be some stuff to be moved
- 15:43around, but... The other name I got and now this
- 15:47dude's not even starting and this team is playing
- 15:50really bad And they've done it to themselves
- 15:53even with the top pick of the draft, but the
- 15:55Dallas Mavericks clay Thompson Like okay. He's
- 16:00doing nothing there now. He's coming off the
- 16:02bench Again, plug him on the Lakers plug him
- 16:06on the Rockets plug him on back to Golden State
- 16:09I don't care plug him on a team that has a shot
- 16:13Dallas is going nowhere. I know we're going to
- 16:14get Kyrie back, but again, Anthony Davis always
- 16:16hurt. And again, they did it themselves. They
- 16:18traded, uh, again, a top five player in the world
- 16:20in Luca and now clay don't even start. So I would
- 16:24like to see clay Thompson somewhere else. That's
- 16:26my list. I'm done. Okay. Um, a great list and
- 16:31all right, so I'm just going to fly through those
- 16:34one by one. Um, good names. I've dude, I'm biased
- 16:38man. Cause I love the league, man. I've, I know
- 16:40there's not, a ton of, you know, super diehard
- 16:43NBA fans. And I feel like that's what this episode
- 16:46is because, but, but I, but I love, but I love
- 16:49this shit, man. So let's dive into it. Okay.
- 16:50So Dalton connect great player, a lot of potential,
- 16:54super young. Here's why he's not going to be
- 16:57traded from the Lakers because he does have that
- 17:00potential. He's on a super cheap contract and
- 17:05LeBron's probably only going to play one more
- 17:07year at most. So why would you move him? I don't
- 17:11think that the Lakers, now I do think, huh, okay,
- 17:15what's the best way for me to word this? I do
- 17:18think that JJ Reddick as their head coach is
- 17:22trying his hardest to win a championship this
- 17:24year. I don't think the Los Angeles Lakers as
- 17:28an organization are, I just don't. Meaning, if
- 17:32they had an opportunity to make the moves to,
- 17:35I mean, you saw who they traded, they traded
- 17:36AD for Luka. because they wanted a star that
- 17:40could extend their longevity. I don't think they're
- 17:42really trying to win over the next couple of
- 17:44years. They're trying to win for the over the
- 17:47next four or five, six years, if that makes sense.
- 17:49OK, yeah. And I think that Dalton Connect as
- 17:52a fantastic player who's actually really good
- 17:56in all aspects of the game. He's not great in
- 17:58anything. We know he can score, but he's an above
- 18:01average defender, above average rebounder, above
- 18:04average passer like he's really good. Across
- 18:07the board and I think getting him cheap and keeping
- 18:09him there Helps, you know, and I'm just gonna
- 18:13throw this out there. He's white. It's rare He's
- 18:17a he's a really really good white player in LA
- 18:20coupled with Luca I mean it just is what it is.
- 18:22I mean, I've you know, I'm not making this up
- 18:24Yeah, I think that I think that helps him. So
- 18:26I don't think they move him I think they'd rather
- 18:29just keep him there and say hey man young fella.
- 18:31Your time is coming Cam Thomas is a great pig
- 18:38He I do I would like to see him moved and get
- 18:41some stability I'd like to see him on a team
- 18:44with a really good coach that helps him develop
- 18:48better as a player and And keeps him as because
- 18:51right now he's kind of fringe where like if you
- 18:54were to ask any NBA fan Hey, it's cam Thomas
- 18:57a starting player in the in the NBA. I think
- 19:00you'd get 50 % Yes 50 % No because it's one of
- 19:04those where it's like he's capable of coming
- 19:06off the bench and being a contributor, but he
- 19:08has starting player talent. Is that fair to say?
- 19:12Duke drops 40 in games. I mean, I understand
- 19:15that, but so did Jamal Crawford who came on the
- 19:18bench. So, so, so I would, you know, and, and
- 19:21there's going to be some players like that. And
- 19:22I think that's a great comp for him. Jamal Crawford
- 19:25was one of those guys where it's like, yeah,
- 19:26he had, he had his times in his career where
- 19:28he started. It was like, nah, man, we want you
- 19:29to come in and run this second unit and give
- 19:31us 27 tonight. and he was capable of that. So
- 19:35I would like to see him moved to whom, to where,
- 19:39that's more a matter for the teams to figure
- 19:41out. I think we talked about this before in the
- 19:44NBA and Jalen Rose has a great quote about this.
- 19:47He said, in the NBA, you got to understand you
- 19:49don't trade players, you trade contracts. It's
- 19:52money for money. It's not necessarily about player
- 19:54or caliber or player for player, but I'll let
- 19:57that part go. Drew Holliday, selfishly, I don't
- 20:03want to see Drew Holliday traded because of what
- 20:07I know about Drew Holliday and him outside of
- 20:10basketball. I'm not sure if you know his family
- 20:15situation. His wife is a cancer survivor. They've
- 20:19got young children. I like to see him. He was
- 20:24in New Orleans for years, but you know, Philly,
- 20:27New Orleans, Milwaukee, Boston for a couple of
- 20:30years. And then now he's having a cup of coffee
- 20:32in Portland. I think that was there just to kind
- 20:35of as a placeholder because they acquired Dame
- 20:37as well. So just to kind of keep the cohesion
- 20:40there and help develop another young team. He's
- 20:43really good for that locker room. So part of
- 20:46me, I think that there is I'd like to see him
- 20:49stay at a place where he can kind of close out
- 20:52his career and not be moved around a lot because
- 20:55he is such a benefit to an organization like
- 20:57that. But yeah, if you put them on a team, like
- 21:01if you put them on a team, like, I mean, I know
- 21:03you don't like the this particular team because
- 21:06of the reasons, but if you put them up on Houston.
- 21:09Oh, yeah. He makes it better overnight. Yeah.
- 21:12You know, just just because of his leadership
- 21:14ability. And that's another guy who always plays
- 21:17hard. Now, let's go ahead to your boy, Klay Thompson.
- 21:22So I think, I think we're all looking at Klay
- 21:25Thompson from a lens that we've seen him at his
- 21:30best. I don't know if it's the injuries. I don't
- 21:34know if it's the basketball equivalent of the
- 21:37yips, but we actually saw this for him his last
- 21:42year at Golden State as well, where I want to
- 21:45say he started off a season where he just couldn't
- 21:48make a three. He just couldn't get a basket.
- 21:54And I think it got to the point where he went
- 21:56a stretch where he just couldn't, he wasn't making
- 21:58shots and the crowd in Golden State literally
- 22:02had to cheer him to make a basket. And I want
- 22:05to say he made a basket and they knew how hard
- 22:07it was on him and he got a standing ovation.
- 22:10You know, after coming back from horrible injuries
- 22:13as an aging player, I know he's talented. And
- 22:17I know that he can play, but it's just hard to
- 22:22say what you're gonna get from Clay because he
- 22:25was the number two. He was the pippin on that
- 22:29team. He was the pippin to Stephen Curry's Jordan.
- 22:33And I don't know if he's capable of it. And I'm
- 22:40not trying to diminish everything he's done.
- 22:41He's older. He's closer to 40 than he is mid
- 22:44-30s. For sure. And I want, I would like to see
- 22:48him go somewhere where he can, you know, still
- 22:51flourish as a player. I don't know if he's capable
- 22:54of it, Kent. Like you want to say like shoot
- 22:58or shoot and you know, but the athleticism that
- 23:01he had, he doesn't have it anymore. Clay Thompson
- 23:04was one of the better defenders in the league.
- 23:07Yeah. And I understand that anymore. I understand
- 23:10that. I just feel like it's kind of like with
- 23:12the true holiday. Maybe not as much but again,
- 23:14I think if you plug clay on a team that has a
- 23:17shot he's a piece I'm not I'm not I'm not talking
- 23:21I'm not saying that yeah, he hasn't diminished
- 23:23a little I Don't even know if he is a starter
- 23:26in the league anymore, but the guys they're starting
- 23:28in Dallas over him I know he's better than that's
- 23:31the thing that bothers me So I'm like man go
- 23:33somewhere where you can actually like if you're
- 23:34not starting in Denver I get it if you're not
- 23:37starting in LA I get it Just depends on where
- 23:40you go Houston I get it but like Dallas right
- 23:43now you just plugging in guys, whoever you want
- 23:45like get out of here, man Okay, so somewhere
- 23:48to win Okay, and I'm just gonna I'm gonna push
- 23:52back and then I'm gonna ask for I'm gonna push
- 23:54back on you Okay, and I'm gonna ask for an answer
- 23:56to this because I like the clay Thompson conversation
- 23:59because we like we know he's a star Yeah, two
- 24:03things one they had to number an overall pick.
- 24:05They got Cooper flag, man, dookie They don't
- 24:07want to stunt that dude's development. And if
- 24:10you think about it even though Cooper, I think
- 24:13as a talent, is clearly more highly rated than
- 24:16Clay, I think if his career trajectory is the
- 24:21same as what Clay Thompson has, you won, right?
- 24:26If Cooper Flagg turns into what Clay Thompson
- 24:28was, you win, right? So they're trying not to
- 24:32stunt his development. But you're saying they're
- 24:34throwing guys out there on the floor that are
- 24:36better than Clay Thompson? I don't think so.
- 24:38I think the guys that they're playing are absolutely
- 24:40better than Clay because I see what his numbers
- 24:43are. He's not playing well. He's averaging seven
- 24:46points for the season. Like those are his numbers.
- 24:52So go ahead. I'm sorry. No, go finish. I'll say
- 24:55something. I'm not talking about flag. I know
- 24:57flag should play. No, no, no, no, no. Not not
- 24:59Cooper flag. No, I understand that. But what
- 25:01I'm saying is, is having a guy like Clay who
- 25:03is clearly struggling. I love Klay Thompson as
- 25:06a player, man. The team itself isn't great. The
- 25:12Mavericks aren't phenomenal. So this is their
- 25:15opportunity early to allow Cooper to develop
- 25:19young. They're taking a lot of losses. They're
- 25:22competitive in a lot of these games. They got
- 25:24to learn how to get over the hump. But Klay Thompson
- 25:27is struggling, man. He's not playing well. I
- 25:32can't say that the guys that they're putting
- 25:33out there who are actually producing even though
- 25:35it's you know, it's not great They're producing
- 25:38I got I've got to give those guys minutes. I
- 25:40have to Clay just doesn't have it right now and
- 25:43it's not his fault. But I mean You know, he's
- 25:47paid handsomely like he's and he's not producing
- 25:50I got you. I got you. I can't argue with so,
- 25:53okay So so my so the other thing I'm gonna say
- 25:55is and I will put a bow on clay Thompson because
- 25:58I like that as a topic Just give it a thought.
- 26:03Where would you like him to land? Just think
- 26:05about the structures of NBA teams now. Where
- 26:09do you think Clay Thompson could go today? In
- 26:13contribute. I think I named I I named him LA
- 26:17Houston. Denver. Maybe Milwaukee. Of course,
- 26:27I don't know why he would want to go there, but.
- 26:30Think plays a West Coast. Hey, he just it's never
- 26:33felt right him in Dallas. So either he's gonna
- 26:36stay in Texas maybe with Houston and Then I'm
- 26:39just popping off teams that at the top that he
- 26:41could just be be a piece Dream in a dream scenario
- 26:46the Warriors bring him back He would be comfortable,
- 26:50but you know, I mean you'd be at least comfortable
- 26:53there. He knows the system knows the guy so And
- 26:56then la's always wanted them and then just adding
- 27:00like, if Denver could add a piece, I don't know.
- 27:03But that's just off the top of my head. Okay.
- 27:07Out of those, I don't like any of them. Denver
- 27:13has the one thing and we saw it with the Russell
- 27:16Westbrook. um you know mismatch the culture in
- 27:19that and that locker room really matters you
- 27:21know i mean dude aaron gordon oh my god yeah
- 27:24like he he has been incredible you know and that's
- 27:28another guy who was injured you know and and
- 27:30came back and worked himself back his his his
- 27:33he's he's on the second leg of his career and
- 27:35it's having a complete resurgence with that team
- 27:38because he's such an incredible fit and you know
- 27:40playing with yoke playing with the joker doesn't
- 27:43hurt either no um I'll have to think on it, man.
- 27:47I don't know. I don't know what comes to mind
- 27:48for Clay. I don't know. He's kind of an NBA purgatory
- 27:51right now, not playing well. And I don't see
- 27:54where, where he fits, but, but the names you
- 27:58mentioned, like Houston, I mean, it wouldn't
- 28:01be terrible, but that's another team that has
- 28:05high expectations. And I don't think you want
- 28:07to bring in a player like that who's clearly
- 28:10struggling and has to, you know, he has to get
- 28:12over a hump. Yeah, and and and the other thing
- 28:16lastly is they'll he's he's paid a lot of money
- 28:19true And they've already got Katie who's taking
- 28:21up a lot of their salary cap So unless they can
- 28:24figure out a you know Steve Ballmer Kawhi Leonard
- 28:26Clippers Aspiration to pay him off the books
- 28:29situation. I don't see yeah, I just don't see
- 28:32him You know being able to fit their money wise
- 28:35on that team all right. I got you, but all good
- 28:37names I love I love all Now, I just want to bring
- 28:47this up because I wasn't the person to introduce
- 28:50this name. You brought up Lamello Ball. So let's
- 28:53do this shit. OK, not a secret. You're a Hornets
- 28:59fan. You're a local, locally born guy. So the
- 29:03Hornets have an attachment. You have an attachment
- 29:05to the Hornets that I just don't have. You know,
- 29:08I'm a transplant here. I love the city. I love
- 29:10the team, but not like you do. Right. I've been
- 29:13firm in my position. We've been going back and
- 29:16forth You know about this personally for about
- 29:18a year. I think they should get lamello ball
- 29:20out of here now I know you like him as a player
- 29:24and I Want to make I want to make sure I'm being
- 29:29as succinct as I can as to why I think they should
- 29:32move him Now we know that he's got an injury
- 29:35history a consistent injury history I don't personally
- 29:39like the way he plays basketball. I'm a basketball
- 29:42snob in that regard. I think he takes a lot of
- 29:45bad shots. I think at his size and his athleticism,
- 29:49he should be a better defender. I think that
- 29:52he doesn't make great decisions when you need
- 29:56it at the end of games. And I can couch all those
- 30:01subjects with the fact that he hasn't had a phenomenal
- 30:04team around him. So I understand that It's not
- 30:07just his own shortcomings. It's also the shortcomings
- 30:10of the team. But my case for trading LaMelo ball
- 30:14is simple. And I don't want to get super personal
- 30:18into this dude's life, but it's all news. And
- 30:21if you know anything about LaMelo, this is just
- 30:23the facts are the facts. His entire family has
- 30:28a history of health issues. His mother had health
- 30:32issues. God bless her. His father had had partial
- 30:37amputations, okay? His brother can't stay healthy.
- 30:42Lonzo Ball, number two overall pick by the LA
- 30:45Lakers, could not stay healthy throughout his
- 30:48NBA career, ankle issues. And LaMelo has the
- 30:51same problems, ankle issues. He was out recently
- 30:55with the ankle issue. You know, so my thing is
- 30:59he's a player that's got capital. He's got star
- 31:03power he's one of those players that's right
- 31:06on the cusp and he might be the rare nba player
- 31:10that's more popular on the internet and amongst
- 31:15young people even though he's not a superstar
- 31:20player in the league if that makes sense he came
- 31:24up on the internet therefore he's popular on
- 31:27the internet and that has a value that i think
- 31:30that you could get an incredible hall that in
- 31:35turn helps your team, the Hornets, long -term
- 31:39more than keeping LaMelo ball and just seeing
- 31:43how things play out. So I've said this to you
- 31:46before, I'm saying it on the air, you tell me
- 31:50what you think, and now tell me where I'm wrong,
- 31:51but I'd like for you to do me the favor, please,
- 31:54and just take your fandom out of it for a second.
- 31:58and just tell me whether or not what I'm saying
- 32:00makes sense. Because to me, it's as clear as
- 32:02day. So, it's really similar to New Orleans with
- 32:09Zion. Zion can't stay healthy. The pelicans suck.
- 32:16They don't really put anything around Zion. The
- 32:19Hornets really haven't either until... Well,
- 32:23I would like to think this year, but now I feel
- 32:26it feels like the same old story Everybody's
- 32:29heard on the hornets So the only thing with mellow
- 32:33So that's the non fandom in me saying I if you're
- 32:37saying that then I have if you if I say zion
- 32:40I gotta say mellow too, right? They're in the
- 32:43same situation But then I gotta go to the hornets
- 32:47and I gotta say look though. He's 24 years old
- 32:49when he's on the floor The Hornets are a better
- 32:53basketball team in the past few seasons. Then
- 32:58you have, again, he is a star. Charlotte, they
- 33:02don't get stars here. It's tough to trade away
- 33:05stars. And that would be the same argument if
- 33:07you're in New Orleans. You'd be like, we don't
- 33:08get stars. We got Zion. We can't just give them
- 33:10away. And the same with Mello. He is the star.
- 33:14He's the reason you go watch the Hornets. And
- 33:17then you've got Go back in history of the Hornets.
- 33:22We talked about this before Their draft history
- 33:26has not been great until like maybe recently
- 33:29this new this news this new organization the
- 33:32new people in there They're doing a better job
- 33:35we think But in the history of the Hornets, they've
- 33:40traded away stars traded away stars they kept
- 33:43Kimba But Kimba didn't necessarily equal wins
- 33:48And I guess you could say the same for Mellow,
- 33:50but we don't really know because LaMelo hasn't
- 33:52been on the floor enough. I just can't agree
- 33:57yet to trade Mellow. I see where you're coming
- 34:02from, but again, it's hard for me to separate
- 34:06fandom just because as a Hornets fan, being here
- 34:11in the city again, watching Larry Johnson leave,
- 34:14watching Alonzo Mourning leave, In trades watching
- 34:17guys Glen Rice just be here for a few years and
- 34:19then go I Just can't agree with it. I can't I
- 34:23can't sign off on it him being 24 years old because
- 34:27then I got to have faith in the organization
- 34:30Then whatever they get back for lamello that
- 34:34they're going to make the right pick Or get the
- 34:38right player Okay, so I'm gonna make a and I'm
- 34:42pretty good at comparison shopping. It's I like
- 34:46to think it's one of my better skills. There's
- 34:49some vast differences between LaMelo and Zion.
- 34:53And I know we kind of started off with that.
- 34:55To me, the main difference is with Zion, I think
- 34:58the questions all come around obviously his weight
- 35:01and his work ethic. You don't have that with
- 35:05LaMelo. We know that LaMelo tries. I have no
- 35:08doubt in my mind that that dude is trying. for
- 35:11sure he's got the we've never seen a lot of shape
- 35:13you know and you know injury -prone whatever
- 35:16i don't know where all that you know i think
- 35:18it's more genetic i think it's just more family
- 35:20history just because that's the data that i have
- 35:23so so so i think there's a a big comparison because
- 35:27there's a difference between trading for zion
- 35:29a guy who's had questions around do i don't even
- 35:33know if you heard this is it sounded like a lot
- 35:35And I had and I had to hear it from multiple
- 35:38places for me to even want to repeat this. Did
- 35:40you hear about the time Zion? They were out at
- 35:42a team dinner and he ordered a pitcher of Coke.
- 35:46No, he ordered a pitcher of Coca Cola. Sweet.
- 35:50That's the type of player that we're talking
- 35:52about. Yeah. A guy where and apparently no one
- 35:55stepped in and went, Whoa, young fella, what
- 35:58the hell is this? We talked about it with the
- 36:01with the. Oh, my goodness. The name. The Caron
- 36:06Butler, Mountain Dew, Kobe story, right? And
- 36:09Kobe had to step in and go, now up until that
- 36:11point, no one pulled Caron Butler aside and say,
- 36:14dude, you can't be drinking two liters of Mountain
- 36:16Dew. How was it in these times that no one pulled
- 36:19Zion aside and said, dude, you can't be putting
- 36:21this stuff in your body and be one of the top
- 36:23athletes in the world. We don't have those questions
- 36:26about LaMelo. So I'm just going to just throw
- 36:29that out there. I got you. But you said it. A
- 36:33lack of faith in the organization, I understand
- 36:36it. So the question is, is what is best for the
- 36:40organization to hold on to a player that is still
- 36:43young, who is reaching his better years, but
- 36:47everything that you've seen from him, he's gotten
- 36:50better. And this is going to sound like I'm contradicting
- 36:54myself. He's gotten better, but I haven't really
- 36:56seen him develop as a player. I haven't seen
- 37:00him really get better. Go ahead. I'm sorry. Go
- 37:03ahead. No, I mean he's good. He's unbelievable
- 37:05He is good and I've talked about like he fouls
- 37:08too much and obviously defense He's got to work
- 37:10on and some of his turnovers are stupid He gets
- 37:14caught up under the basket and throws it to the
- 37:16other team. I mean that stuff drives me crazy,
- 37:18but He is he is that type of guard. He does create
- 37:23he can't finish so Yeah, I don't again. He's
- 37:28too good of a talent to just say yeah, we're
- 37:30gonna trade him Without without without some
- 37:35Conflict right John Marantz got conflict and
- 37:40LaMelo could easily He just hasn't been on the
- 37:43court enough to complain. See what I mean? He
- 37:47can't say hey guys We've changed coaches since
- 37:49I've been here and we've not really got to got
- 37:51players. What can he say? He's not on how does
- 37:53he know because he hadn't really played with
- 37:55his teammates Okay, so how long do you give him
- 38:02What is it going to take for you to say, yeah,
- 38:04OK, go ahead. Let's see if we can make a move
- 38:06and trade Lamello for. And again, in this hypothetical
- 38:10scenario, I'm giving you adequate draft capital.
- 38:15And I've got one example up, and I'm just going
- 38:18to give you the example. I'm going to use Desmond
- 38:20Bain as my example. Desmond Bain, guard, traded
- 38:24to the magic. From the Grizzlies to the magic.
- 38:29Ironically enough from the team that John Moran
- 38:31he played with John Moran. They traded him the
- 38:34Grizzlies got Cole Anthony KCP a Number one,
- 38:40I'm sorry a first -round pick and Yang Hansen
- 38:43three first -round picks Okay, a 26 28 and a
- 38:4730 and a 20 29 first -round pick swap and Then
- 38:51the only thing is it's a top two protected pick.
- 38:54Okay, so that's what they got for Desmond Bain
- 38:57Who my mama had no idea who Desmond Bain is.
- 39:00Okay, my mama knows who LaMelo ball is All right,
- 39:04so Just keep that in mind You're getting you're
- 39:08not only are you getting the player and I mean
- 39:10I think it's fair to say if you were to put Desmond
- 39:12Bain and LaMelo ball Side -by -side at a minimum
- 39:14you'd say they're at least as equally good as
- 39:17players So in terms of the basketball talent,
- 39:20let's just say that they're neck -and -neck Then
- 39:23you get the extra with LaMelo because he's a
- 39:25star Now what? When do you say let's go ahead
- 39:31and make the move? What does it take? Saying
- 39:33that you're gonna get a haul like that Man I
- 39:39got at least it's not gonna be he's got to have
- 39:41this season and maybe next season Okay, so this
- 39:47year and so two more seasons I gotta see yeah
- 39:49He's cuz he's gotta have he's gonna have to have
- 39:52some years left on the contract so teams can
- 39:55you know? trade for them and know they'll still
- 39:57have them. So yeah, yeah, maybe two more years
- 40:02and then, uh, and then let's see where I'm at.
- 40:06I'm just not ready to give up. I don't want to
- 40:07see stars leave Charlotte. I don't want to see
- 40:09them backtrack set themselves back five years.
- 40:14Okay. Um, I'll, I'll end it on this because I
- 40:17don't want to beat a dead horse and I don't want
- 40:20to sound like I'm trying to convince you to trade.
- 40:22You've got your position and I respect it. Yeah.
- 40:25But let's just say, I'm trying to find an adequate
- 40:30comp. But let's just say that a lamello ball
- 40:35trade includes what Desmond Bain went for. So
- 40:41you get a player like a Cole Anthony. You get
- 40:45a veteran player like a KCP that we know can
- 40:48contribute. You get another first round player.
- 40:53and then you get four first rounds. Hold on,
- 40:57you're telling me, would you tell me that that's
- 41:01enough to trade for LaMelo ball? That's a hell
- 41:06of a haul. It is, but you gotta have, I mean,
- 41:13to me, you gotta have the pieces. Like the Grizzlies
- 41:16could do that because they got John Morant and
- 41:19Jackson. Agreed. who do the hornets i mean brandon
- 41:23miller's always hurt and then you got miles bridges
- 41:25has this year and next year on his contract conkin
- 41:28nipple looks for real but still you don't have
- 41:31john moran they the grizzlies didn't trade their
- 41:34star they traded another guy that's a really
- 41:39good ball player but i don't think desmond bain
- 41:42is a star okay fair to say when you like like
- 41:49Yeah, go ahead. No, I'm saying if you trade LaMelo
- 41:52ball, I need more than that. I need I need a
- 41:58haul, you know what I mean? Five first -rounders.
- 42:01Okay, okay, okay. Five first -rounders and that's
- 42:03it? No. Okay, see what I mean? You gotta have
- 42:07five first -rounders and I'm greedy because I'm
- 42:11like you can't give away that kind of talent.
- 42:13So you got to give me five first -rounders. And
- 42:16probably, again, Cole Anthony didn't even stay
- 42:18with the Grizzlies, so you gotta get guys that
- 42:20you're gonna keep. So, you know, it doesn't have
- 42:24to be a veteran, but you gotta replace Mello,
- 42:26so you gotta give me a young guard or something.
- 42:29Okay. Okay. All right, so... And I like the picks
- 42:34better. Like I said, the organization's doing
- 42:36better in the draft. I mean, they're starting
- 42:37three rookies this year. All who are contributing,
- 42:42playing very good basketball. And then you Brandon
- 42:45Miller, I think is a good pick, but he's got
- 42:47to get some bulk or muscle or something and stop
- 42:50being hurt. Because he's out just as much as
- 42:53on Melo. OK, and like I said, I don't. I don't
- 42:59I don't disagree. I understand you want to get
- 43:03what you could get. If you could sell a house
- 43:05for a million dollars, why would you sell it
- 43:07for 900 ,000? I get it. But also, you're saying
- 43:12he's a talented player, he is good, he does have
- 43:15potential, but he's got the issues. And any team
- 43:18that's going to trade for him is going to say,
- 43:20hey, you're clearly looking to trade him for
- 43:23a reason, and this dude has an injury history.
- 43:26You know, it's hard to say what the future is
- 43:28going to look like if a, if a team does trade
- 43:31for them. Yeah. And, and I, and I hate to bring
- 43:34this up, but, um, there was a, an interview and,
- 43:38and it kind of hurt me to hear him say this,
- 43:40but there was an interview that Kevin Durant
- 43:41did. And actually, I actually listened to it
- 43:43the other day. It was on the pivot, you know,
- 43:45the, uh, Ryan Clark, uh, Channing Crowder, um,
- 43:49a podcast and great podcast. It was a really
- 43:51good listen, you know, to listen to KD long form.
- 43:54And they were talking about asking KD how long
- 43:57he'll play basketball because, you know, he's
- 43:59one of those guys that loves basketball. It's
- 44:01in his soul. And one of the examples he said,
- 44:06he said, as long as I feel like he's like, I
- 44:08don't mind coming off the bench. He's like, and
- 44:10I don't mind playing on the team as long as I
- 44:12feel like they're trying to win. And then to
- 44:15end his point, he said, but like if you trade
- 44:19me to Charlotte, Yeah, I think my career is over
- 44:23because they're not trying to win So I would
- 44:26like to see the franchise as a whole try to flip
- 44:30that narrative They have that history they have
- 44:33that reputation Where they're a franchise that's
- 44:37not serious. They're just in the league and they're
- 44:40a team and they got some players But they don't
- 44:42take basketball seriously, and I think they're
- 44:45historically their their track record has proven
- 44:47that so That's kind of the gumption that people
- 44:51have when it comes to the Hornets and it's going
- 44:54to take something to shift that around. And I
- 44:57don't think LaMelo ball is that I just don't
- 45:00because even as a player, me, I'm saying this,
- 45:04I don't think he takes it that seriously. And
- 45:08I wish he did, but I just don't think he does.
- 45:11Well, he's a different generation, but I'm going
- 45:14to go back to something you said. about him being
- 45:18injured in teams trading. So in this league,
- 45:23any team will take a chance on a guy, especially
- 45:25like a LaMelo ball. Again, young. Curry was injured
- 45:29early in his career. I always bring up Curry.
- 45:32You know, Stephen A said he had tissue paper
- 45:34for ankles. He does. So look what he turned out.
- 45:38Look what he turned out to be. Glad the Warriors
- 45:41didn't give up on him. That's kind of the mindset
- 45:43I have on LaMelo is he is still young. He has
- 45:47so much talent. And to come back to your point
- 45:51on guys not wanting to come to Charlotte because
- 45:53of the team. That's another reason not to trade
- 45:55him because he's here. He likes it here. He likes
- 45:57Miles Bridges. It looks like he likes his teammates.
- 46:02Everything, again, no conflict. So why get rid
- 46:05of your star player with no conflict? He's here.
- 46:09You drafted him. You don't get too many guys
- 46:12in the draft. We don't get too many good players
- 46:14in Charlotte. Free agents don't want to come
- 46:17here. So that's my that's that's it for me. I'm
- 46:20done with it I'm gonna throw out unless you got
- 46:23one more thing. No. No, you know what I and we
- 46:26don't We typically don't do this when we've and
- 46:31I think this out of all of the episodes we recorded
- 46:33I don't think we've ever really flipped and changed
- 46:38how we were going to like we have our rundown.
- 46:42Yeah segments of what we're gonna do and And
- 46:45what I what I'd like to do is I'd like to end
- 46:48this segment and go into another one because
- 46:50and I'm and I'm and I because I love this conversation
- 46:53and I like Okay, I I like your passion about
- 46:56the Hornets and and I'm and I'm leaning on that
- 46:59because I don't have it and We've mentioned we
- 47:03talked about this before. I love this city, man.
- 47:05I love Charlotte this is i'm not from here but
- 47:08this is home to me and nothing makes me feel
- 47:11better than watching local sports franchises
- 47:13do well it's an energy in the city that's a measurable
- 47:17i've never experienced that in my life and i
- 47:18love it what i would like to do is in this segment
- 47:22go to another segment where we do what we can
- 47:24to try to come up with a hypothetical of how
- 47:26to fix the hornets and change the culture Want
- 47:30your input on it because you've been here you
- 47:31we don't have to go into the past so much Let's
- 47:34talk about what we can do in the future Realistically,
- 47:37okay to help the hornets. Is that something you
- 47:40want to do? Are you okay? Just flipping it? Yeah,
- 47:41and just saying hey, let's just let's just go
- 47:43hornets heavy You started off with the trades,
- 47:46but but I want to do it just to see what we can
- 47:48come up with How you feel about it? Yeah, that's
- 47:51fine. I have more names, but we can talk about
- 47:53them later Okay, then let's do this All right.
- 48:03This is the second time, the same episode, I'm
- 48:06going to ask you to take your emotion out of
- 48:09it. All right. I know I'm, I'm, I know I'm, I'm
- 48:14asking you to be eight foot tall. I know, I know
- 48:16I'm asking you to do something totally out of
- 48:18your element, but, but I, but the only reason
- 48:21why I say that is because we have, uh, you know
- 48:26what, man, shout out to Kenny. Shout out to KKL.
- 48:28I'm gonna shout him out on the pod. The truth.
- 48:30The truth. Kenny the truth. He's one of the guys
- 48:35that I go back and forth with. Of course, you
- 48:37know, we've worked with Kenny for years. He's
- 48:41one of the guys that's always team first over
- 48:43players and he has his reasons for that. So I'm
- 48:47going and for him, his perspective on it is the
- 48:52team will always be there and the players are
- 48:54going to come and go. So I'm gonna ask you to
- 48:58take your fandom and just put it on your coffee
- 49:01table for a second Because I think that's what's
- 49:04needed for you to make a logical decision And
- 49:08how to correct and make your team better. It's
- 49:10gonna hurt. It's not gonna look great You're
- 49:13gonna get some backlash, but you got to do what's
- 49:16best for your team So that's the only reason
- 49:17why I'm asking you to do that The podcast is
- 49:20fanatically speaking you want to speak about
- 49:22this as a fan and I'm gonna let you do that but
- 49:25If you're going to fix the Hornets, you're not
- 49:28going to do it by, you know, taking your, I want
- 49:32to put asses in the seats. I want us to be popular.
- 49:36You need growth. So I'm going to ask you, what
- 49:39moves would you make to help this team grow?
- 49:43What moves would you do? You're the GM. What
- 49:46moves do you make? Well, here's the problem is
- 49:50I like the moves they made. They just can't get
- 49:54guys on the court That's I mean that's to me
- 49:59like if we if we see like Josh Green Grant Williams
- 50:03haven't played this season and Then we talked
- 50:05about LaMelo being out already three straight
- 50:07games at this point The Miller's been out almost
- 50:11the whole season. He's only played in a few games
- 50:13Like we got to be helped Colin Sexton just missed
- 50:16the game. So We got to be healthy. We don't know
- 50:19what this team can can do And I know what you're
- 50:23gonna say you're gonna say what well and I would
- 50:25agree with you the only piece that has value
- 50:27To in a trade is going to be LaMelo ball No,
- 50:32no, no, no, I'm not I'm not gonna say that I'll
- 50:35disagree Britches absolutely has value. Okay,
- 50:38Bridges does he's got another year, but no no,
- 50:42but I'm saying but bridges still he has value
- 50:45Miller absolutely has value But but I wouldn't
- 50:50trade I have trouble trading. Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 50:53Yeah. The only reason I say that and I hate to
- 50:56cut you off, but the only reason I'm saying that
- 50:57I'm saying in terms of teams where they were
- 51:01someone's looking at, where you walk in with
- 51:04your woman and someone's going, Oh yeah, I like
- 51:06her. I got you. So they, they have, they have
- 51:09appeal. Teams are looking at the horn. It's like
- 51:11it's lunchtime. Oh yeah. Oh, I'd like to get
- 51:14a piece of lamella. Yeah. I can get, I can do
- 51:16something with bridges. I could do something
- 51:18with Miller. They they are they're coveted players
- 51:21even though they play for the hornets that's
- 51:24all i meant by that i'll go ahead i'll shut up
- 51:26i'll let you know no you're good so i guess i'll
- 51:29rephrase it i know they have those three have
- 51:31value correct i think i guess realistically who
- 51:36could they trade and i guess it would be now
- 51:38it would be lamello and bridges i don't think
- 51:42they're trading miller fair enough I agree. I
- 51:45don't, I mean, I don't think they're trading
- 51:46mellow either, but they, they like to put him
- 51:48in trade talks in the NBA. Like the NFL like
- 51:52to put AJ Brown in trade talks. So they'd like
- 51:55to put his name out there just to get it going.
- 51:58Or these, these guys who are fans of teams, these
- 52:01former players want them on their team. So they
- 52:04like to say, Oh, he should go to the Clippers
- 52:06or he should go to the magic or he should, you
- 52:07know, and I get it. But again, he's got the value.
- 52:12I just can't, again, I'm not going to be able
- 52:15to, even my fandom, if I'm looking at the Hornets,
- 52:20I'm gonna try to look at them from an outside
- 52:22perspective. If it goes south, you know, Bridges
- 52:28is the one that's gonna have one more year left.
- 52:31So I could see that trade happening before I
- 52:37would see a LaMelo trade. I still think LaMelo,
- 52:40it would take two more years. then again you
- 52:43have to get a hole and again I'm not confident
- 52:46that would fix it but maybe it will they did
- 52:48pretty good in the draft this year like I said
- 52:50so I don't know what else to do to fix them except
- 52:54get better trainers get a better training staff
- 52:58I don't know because the guys just keep getting
- 53:01hurt every single year, every single season.
- 53:03We don't know what this team can be because we
- 53:07can't get a full roster out there. I would at
- 53:09least say, like we talked before, at least this
- 53:11year we don't have a G League roster outside
- 53:14of KJ Simpson getting on the court. But got a
- 53:18lot of rookies playing. They got three rookies
- 53:20starting at the moment with the guys being out.
- 53:23But even then they're still starting at least
- 53:25one to two rookies a night. and then getting
- 53:27another, you know, McNeely getting off the bench
- 53:29too. So they're consistently playing four rookies,
- 53:33but we don't know what, if that's going to be
- 53:35the case going forward when Green comes back,
- 53:37when Williams comes back, when Miller and Ball
- 53:40all are out there active, if that ever happens
- 53:43this season. So that's all I got. I don't know
- 53:48what else to do to fix them. As an organization,
- 53:51I think they're trying. I think new ownership.
- 53:55management are trying I Like Charles Lee as a
- 53:59coach as a person he seems cool Seems like he's
- 54:03got his head straight seems like you know, but
- 54:05we got to see results But he's got to have the
- 54:07players on the court to see those results Everything
- 54:11about them they're doing great Yeah, I don't
- 54:15know what else to say yeah, okay It's it's time
- 54:22it's time for the tough talk, man. It's time
- 54:26for you and I to have this really hard conversation,
- 54:31friend to friend, you the homie, man. You know
- 54:33it. So I'm just going to ask this question. I
- 54:39give you this roster and they're 100 % healthy,
- 54:45all 82 games, man. What's their record this season?
- 54:51Well, I start to finish this entire team 100
- 54:54% healthy. What would we say? What was it? What
- 54:57was the win count? I told you I would like to
- 55:01see or thought they would get to I would want
- 55:03them to double their wins from last year 38 wins,
- 55:07okay now I and I and that was reasonable and
- 55:14respectable a 38 win Charlotte Hornet team God,
- 55:21I was about to say something so messed up. Um,
- 55:24you know, uh, uh, 38 when Charlotte Hornet team
- 55:29is, uh, it's the equivalent to dating a four
- 55:38out of one out of 10. If you're dating, if you're
- 55:42dating, she's a four that, that, so even with
- 55:46the moves that they made, the talent that they
- 55:49have, that's still not enough. That's not enough
- 55:53to get you over the hump. So even at their best,
- 55:58that's the best that they could do. And again,
- 56:01it's a fair comparison. I think 38 is absolutely
- 56:04realistic in this Eastern Conference, where you
- 56:08got a lot of teams that are out, which is rare.
- 56:11You got some teams making some research. I mean,
- 56:13you see Philly's playing well. uh boston's taking
- 56:16a step back because of the tatum injuries um
- 56:19you know yanis is having to go nuts every night
- 56:21just for for milwaukee to get wins the eastern
- 56:25conference atlanta you talk about you know trey
- 56:27young being injured like miami's struggling there's
- 56:30a lot of opportunities for for the hornets to
- 56:32take a a jump up yeah and even with all that
- 56:37that's still probably the best that they could
- 56:39do so They've got new ownership. Jordan sold
- 56:43the team, they got new ownership coming in. New
- 56:46coaching staff, you wanna talk about training
- 56:48staffs and all that, that's fine. I wanna see
- 56:53the Hornets do well, man. I think their best
- 57:01bet to become a serious franchise is to outsource
- 57:08- all the talent that they have in the front
- 57:13office at the top. And I think they need a complete
- 57:17culture change. And this is gonna sound ridiculous,
- 57:21but I think this is the only way that you make
- 57:23the Hornets a credible franchise is to go out
- 57:28and buy credibility. You go get top tier everything.
- 57:34You go to Golden State. You go to Miami. and
- 57:39you just poach them for all their talent. You
- 57:41pay whatever it costs. You go to the top coaches
- 57:47in the league and say, Hey, what is it going
- 57:50to take for you to come here and be a coach of
- 57:52my organization and run my team for me? You go
- 57:56to a Spolstra. I hate to say this. You go get
- 58:00yourself a Doc Rivers. You go get a guy who knows
- 58:03what it's like to get a team to the next level.
- 58:08I think that's what you have to do. You're not
- 58:12going to be able to have these people aren't
- 58:13going to come to you voluntarily and you clearly
- 58:16don't have a structure to be able to develop
- 58:19it on your own. So what do you do? You couple
- 58:22yourself with the people that you know know how
- 58:25to do it at a high level. You know you go get
- 58:28yourself a Maury who can you know who can you
- 58:31know recruit players and bring players in whatever
- 58:34it cost. If you want to turn things around, that's
- 58:39what it's going to take for you at the top. Forget
- 58:42the players on the field. I mean, the players
- 58:44on the court. Forget that. Throw that out. That's
- 58:46not going to help you. It's got to be a culture
- 58:49shift where guys come in and know, Hey man, this
- 58:50is a serious basketball organization. We're not
- 58:54just some team, you know, you know, in North
- 58:56Carolina, you know, that it's got some flashy
- 58:59colors and LaMelo ball, a player that's, that's,
- 59:02you know, popular on the internet. I know what
- 59:04sounds unlikely. But that's what, you know, other
- 59:08teams, you know, that have had, you know, that
- 59:10have got new owners. I mean, you saw what the
- 59:11Mavericks did when they got a new owner. They
- 59:13traded Luca, traded Luca away to get AD. You
- 59:17know, you saw a Phoenix, the sons, they bought,
- 59:21got new ownership in. The first thing they did
- 59:22was, Hey, we're going to go get Kevin Durant.
- 59:24They went to play her out, but they also were
- 59:27well -structured organizations before that took
- 59:29place. And that's what the hornets have to turn
- 59:32themselves into. first. I'm not just going to
- 59:34put this on the players. I'm putting this on
- 59:36the people who not only have all the money, make
- 59:39all the money and make all the decisions. Their
- 59:41decisions have been made, have been made poorly
- 59:43for decades. And I think they have to do a complete
- 59:47total culture shift. And that's the only way
- 59:50you turn the tide and turn things around. Am
- 59:52I crazy? You're not crazy. And I think again,
- 59:56we don't know yet about this new ownership. It
- 1:00:00seems like they're They are, I think they are
- 1:00:02serious about basketball, but you're saying they
- 1:00:05need to make a shock. And it's funny you talk
- 1:00:07about, I just want to bring this up because I
- 1:00:10saw Jay Williams do these, does these videos
- 1:00:13now, and he did one on Jordan and about people
- 1:00:17calling him a bad owner. I don't know that Jordan
- 1:00:21was trying to win basketball games as an owner.
- 1:00:26He actually Made business wise he was a great
- 1:00:30owner and I forgot all the numbers Jay Williams
- 1:00:32spit spit out But the way what Jordan made and
- 1:00:36the decisions he made by switching the Bobcats
- 1:00:38to the Hornets Any kind of money that came in
- 1:00:43and again This was because he wasn't spending
- 1:00:45money on the players in the court putting a good
- 1:00:48product on the court But then selling the team
- 1:00:51based off of what he paid for the team so And
- 1:00:56that and that's a different. It's kind of I want
- 1:00:58to mix this in here because now this ownership
- 1:01:01seems like they're trying to win. You know, good
- 1:01:04draft, good players, good core veterans, young
- 1:01:07guys, decent young coach. But you're saying and
- 1:01:12I can agree with this like and I was OK. I think
- 1:01:14I said this. We talked about this before to Doc
- 1:01:16Rivers. I take Doc Rivers here. I'm all about
- 1:01:19big names, just like when Russell Westbrook was
- 1:01:21on the block a few years ago. I was like I'll
- 1:01:23take Russell Westbrook in Charlotte. I'll take
- 1:01:26a big name again only team never to play on Christmas
- 1:01:29like yeah like the shock value not really shock
- 1:01:33value but you're saying just go one time can
- 1:01:35we just go all in big name coach and you said
- 1:01:40not even the players but I know you said at least
- 1:01:43try to get a big name player in free agency just
- 1:01:46throw whatever at them but you're saying just
- 1:01:49go all out to try to be taken serious on the
- 1:01:54court off the court everything make it look like
- 1:01:57you are trying your absolute best to to win basketball
- 1:02:01games not just be a successful franchise which
- 1:02:05a lot of times people lose track and like i said
- 1:02:07with jordan and a lot of sports these owners
- 1:02:10are about making money and making it turn into
- 1:02:12profit not necessarily winning championships
- 1:02:16of course we're not even asking for championships
- 1:02:19here we're just asking for relevancy and notoriety
- 1:02:24and some sort of success on the court, right?
- 1:02:31Is that what we're saying? We just want to be
- 1:02:33taken seriously. Like I said, hey, can you consider
- 1:02:35us for a prime time game? TNT, can we get some
- 1:02:38sort of, can we get a Christmas game? Can we
- 1:02:42get just something else to not be talked about
- 1:02:45on Levitard, you know, as a... It's just like
- 1:02:50you said, a team that's just out there in the
- 1:02:52abyss, floating in the system of the NBA that
- 1:02:55no one is paying attention to. My fandom is mixed
- 1:03:06between the actual product and the sports business
- 1:03:09side. We've been over this. I love looking at
- 1:03:13the inner workings. I see the most fans don't
- 1:03:16care. They don't care. they want what they want.
- 1:03:19They want their feel good. They want those, you
- 1:03:21know, those endorphin hits. But for me, what
- 1:03:24happens in front offices, what happens at the
- 1:03:26top of organizations matter. And I think if you
- 1:03:31go through every major American sports franchise
- 1:03:37on paper, pick a sport, there isn't one that's
- 1:03:42taken less seriously than the Hornets. They just
- 1:03:46aren't, they aren't looked at as a serious sports
- 1:03:49franchise. And there's a reason for that. And
- 1:03:51that is a reputation that they have earned. Yeah.
- 1:03:55Okay. So what I'm saying is, is what do you do?
- 1:03:58How do you get yourself legitimacy? And I'm just
- 1:04:02gonna, I'm going to do this and take it. People
- 1:04:07could take this however they want to remember
- 1:04:09when crypto was really popping off. All those
- 1:04:13crypto bros, you know what they did the second
- 1:04:15they got that money, they went out and started
- 1:04:17getting credibility. I'm going to go into this
- 1:04:19place and I'm going to take pictures with Tom
- 1:04:20Brady. I'm going to take pictures with Steph
- 1:04:22Curry. I'm going to take pictures next to Kevin
- 1:04:24Durant. I'm going to be at all these games sitting
- 1:04:26courtside next to Kevin Hart. Who's that goofy
- 1:04:29guy sitting next to Kevin Hart? Oh, he paid $75
- 1:04:32,000 for that court side seat. He, they went
- 1:04:35and bought their credibility by attaching themselves
- 1:04:38to people that had a name. Okay. And it worked
- 1:04:41for them. to the tune of billions of dollars,
- 1:04:44some of it fraudulent, but still billions of
- 1:04:47dollars. They went out and got that credibility.
- 1:04:49The benefit that the Hornets have is it gives
- 1:04:55anyone with a reputation to come in and they
- 1:05:00will forever be known for turning the Hornets
- 1:05:06into something viable. Dude, we, the, the the
- 1:05:10Indiana Pacers, what they've done. They every
- 1:05:14era in our lifetime, they've been relevant. Every
- 1:05:18era, every just think about it. Every decade
- 1:05:21since the 80s, the 90s, 2010s, the early 2000s,
- 1:05:272010s and they've been they've been and how do
- 1:05:30they do that? They went out and got veteran coaches.
- 1:05:33They went out and got veteran front office executives.
- 1:05:36They went and got veteran players. They drafted
- 1:05:38well. It was a combination of everything. No
- 1:05:40one's chomping at the bit to go to Indiana. There
- 1:05:43is no reason why the Indiana Pacers can exist,
- 1:05:47but the Charlotte Hornets with, and again, has
- 1:05:51the Pacers won a championship ever? No. Ever?
- 1:05:56No one would call them. the garbage. Why? Because
- 1:05:59they've had those opportunities. They've got
- 1:06:01the players and they put a decent product. They've
- 1:06:06functioned as a viable sports organization. I
- 1:06:11don't need the Hornets to be great, but you would
- 1:06:15have much, you Kent would have much better pride
- 1:06:18in your Charlotte Hornets if they have the exact
- 1:06:23same track record as the Indiana Pacers. Yes.
- 1:06:27And You know again, I'm gonna go back and I know
- 1:06:30we talked about the Hornets on a previous episode.
- 1:06:32So this will we're definitely doing a lot of
- 1:06:35Hornets, but They had that core they had that
- 1:06:41Before they left Charlotte the first time or
- 1:06:44the only time they left Charlotte to go to New
- 1:06:45Orleans the original Hornets It's been a tough.
- 1:06:49It's been a tough road man coming back. We know
- 1:06:52when they came back as the Bobcats It's really
- 1:06:54been a tough. What is it now? 25 years, something
- 1:06:59like that, since they've been back -ish, almost
- 1:07:0325 years. Man, if you, and again, you can blame
- 1:07:10this on ownership, front office, right? They
- 1:07:13did try, they did hire Mitch Kupchak, and it
- 1:07:17seemed like, but then again, I don't know when
- 1:07:20Jordan was on it, I don't know what all was going
- 1:07:22on. Yeah. I get what you're saying though. It's
- 1:07:29just, it's kind of sad. It's just, it kind of
- 1:07:31brings me down that, you know, I do always have
- 1:07:34this hype for the Hornets. And again, I don't
- 1:07:38know that there's just one thing that can fix
- 1:07:40them. And I know what you're saying and I agree
- 1:07:43with everything you said. And then I'm on the
- 1:07:46flip side of, we just don't know what, we don't
- 1:07:51know what they have on the court because of injuries.
- 1:07:54And then. as they're running the organization,
- 1:07:59again, what can they possibly do? I don't want
- 1:08:06to fire Charles Lee at the moment, but I get
- 1:08:09what you're saying is, you know, bring in a big
- 1:08:12name. Okay, I mean, yeah, I mean, you can say
- 1:08:15that, but I understand it, and okay. I don't
- 1:08:23want to be the person who's just firing people.
- 1:08:25I don't want to be that guy. But better is better.
- 1:08:29Better for your organization is better for your
- 1:08:32organization. You're a real fan, man. What you
- 1:08:38have for the Hornets, I wish I had in any team.
- 1:08:41The closest I'd have is my fandom for the Eagles.
- 1:08:44But even with that... If I know that there was
- 1:08:47a better coach that we could get, if you tell
- 1:08:49me I could have Andy Reed today for Nick Sirianni,
- 1:08:53I'll fly to Philly myself and pack up Sirianni
- 1:08:56shit. You know what I mean? I would. I'm just,
- 1:08:59I'm just being honest. So for me, better is better.
- 1:09:02And if it's better for the team, you've got to
- 1:09:04make those tough decisions. We can talk about
- 1:09:06cup check all we want to. I want to say cup check
- 1:09:09is what? Almost 80. or i don't know he's gone
- 1:09:12now i'm sorry let me take it back i'm gonna say
- 1:09:13no that's unfair cup check 71 okay so he's a
- 1:09:17dynasty level mba executive it's not a bad move
- 1:09:22but i mean there's better things that can be
- 1:09:26done they're not looked at seriously there's
- 1:09:29a reason for that and i'd rather be a middle
- 1:09:33of the road organization I think Indiana is the
- 1:09:36best comp and I know it kind of feel like I just
- 1:09:38threw them in there. But the only reason I did
- 1:09:40that is because they're a small to mid level
- 1:09:43market team, much like Charlotte is considered
- 1:09:47a lot of people in the Charlotte metro area.
- 1:09:48We know, but people look at Charlotte like it's
- 1:09:51a small city. It's not Atlanta. It's not, you
- 1:09:53know, it's not Philly. It's not Boston, you know,
- 1:09:56not LA clearly, but so there's room there. You
- 1:09:59can do it successfully as a small market team.
- 1:10:02If it's done. in specific ways. And the hornets
- 1:10:06just don't have it. Yeah. And I'd like to see
- 1:10:08them make the moves that put them in a position
- 1:10:10to be able to do so. So I mean, we'll you know,
- 1:10:14we'll see. But we'll see. We'll see what they
- 1:10:16do. Like you said, it's been done. OKC, Indiana,
- 1:10:19small market, build them up, make them relevant.
- 1:10:23Yes. There you go. Yeah. Yeah, it can be done.
- 1:10:30F -U -N. Now we're having fun. All right, so
- 1:10:34it's that time for our fun, random topic, and
- 1:10:37we're going to stick with basketball. We're going
- 1:10:39to go through just a couple names on both sides
- 1:10:43here. We're going to both talk about who has
- 1:10:46the ugliest shot we've ever seen in the NBA and
- 1:10:49who has the prettiest shot ever in the NBA. Wow.
- 1:10:54OK. So I want to hear your Answers because I
- 1:11:01do have a curve ball. I did set you up for that
- 1:11:04and tell you that I had a curve ball That's great.
- 1:11:06So and you so we're gonna let's go ugliest shot
- 1:11:10and then I'll give you my ugliest and then go
- 1:11:12prettiest and Then I and then I'll and then I'll
- 1:11:15hit you and then I'll hit you out of nowhere
- 1:11:16Okay, so sticking with Charlotte, you know Michael
- 1:11:19Kidd Gilchrist probably the ugliest shot I've
- 1:11:21ever seen in my life Not only one of the worst
- 1:11:26draft picks ever but also one of the worst jump
- 1:11:30shots. It's amazing that someone can make it
- 1:11:33to the NBA with that type of jump shot, with
- 1:11:37that type of form that you go to Kentucky and
- 1:11:43you get drafted into the number two pick of the
- 1:11:45draft and you have that shot. Like that's not
- 1:11:50even like Bill Cartwright. And again, we like
- 1:11:53to show our age sometimes. Bill Cartwright had
- 1:11:55an ugly shot, right? but he was a center, right?
- 1:11:59Shaq had an ugly shot, but he was a center. Big
- 1:12:01guys, we don't expect them to have pretty shot.
- 1:12:03We expect them to have some ugliness, bad form.
- 1:12:08And then you get into like Sean Marion flipping
- 1:12:12the ball. Oh, damn, you took mine. Oh, would
- 1:12:15you? Okay. You suck. Damn, you took mine. Go
- 1:12:18ahead. No, go ahead. I'm just popping off names,
- 1:12:21but you know what I mean? But MKG had like The
- 1:12:25the just absolute most awkward like his hand
- 1:12:29was like backwards Or he like shot with the back
- 1:12:32of his hand instead of a palm of his hand It
- 1:12:34was just the ugliest stupidest shot I've ever
- 1:12:36seen in my life and that dude played at Kentucky
- 1:12:38for Calipari And then made it to the NBA the
- 1:12:41number two pick of the draft. That's insane Yeah,
- 1:12:45and that's uh, well and again, it was more his
- 1:12:49athleticism. I mean no disrespect to him No,
- 1:12:53I'm just saying kind of a kind of a kind of a
- 1:12:55weak draft. Well, well, yeah, when it's got screwed,
- 1:12:59but still still. Yeah. So I I've got one and
- 1:13:07it is a Sean, a Sean Marion esque where to me
- 1:13:13your basketball form just looks unnatural. And
- 1:13:16I think that's I think that's more of what we're
- 1:13:18talking about. It's a shot where it's like your
- 1:13:19mechanics are just so off. that it doesn't look
- 1:13:24like a natural shot that you're used to seeing.
- 1:13:28I am gonna go with the, I believe Shaquille O
- 1:13:33'Neal called him the dancer. I'm gonna go with
- 1:13:35Cam Payne. Cameron Payne has an ugly shot. He
- 1:13:40does. And like when he shoots it, I'm almost
- 1:13:45surprised because I feel like his shot is so
- 1:13:48ugly. that I don't know why like a coach is like
- 1:13:50hey man like yeah you you can't be pulling that
- 1:13:53shot like you can't take that it's it's it looks
- 1:13:56unconventional it looks unnatural it looks like
- 1:13:58he's forcing the ball out yeah and so I'm going
- 1:14:01to go with a with a more a recent pick uh I guess
- 1:14:04I'll for a younger player I'll go with campaign
- 1:14:06it's uh yeah if I if I had that if that was my
- 1:14:10basketball shot I'd only shoot layups yeah and
- 1:14:15like you point out man with these ugly shots
- 1:14:18It's not I'm not saying they're bad basketball
- 1:14:20players or they don't have talent because basketball
- 1:14:22is not all about your shot It's like I said,
- 1:14:25it's just they have not visually appealing. No,
- 1:14:29it's just ugly form I'm not saying that it's
- 1:14:32they don't go in or sometimes go in I don't know
- 1:14:34but it's just a bad form and those those are
- 1:14:38some of the ugliest shots I've ever seen Gotcha.
- 1:14:41Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha. Who who do you have as
- 1:14:44a I guess prettiest shot nice form So this one
- 1:14:49is probably gonna come out of nowhere it's Showing
- 1:14:54my age a little bit but to me this player had
- 1:14:59a pure natural form it was it was to me it was
- 1:15:04as if the the shot making ability was made in
- 1:15:09a lab and genetically engineered for this player
- 1:15:13I'm gonna go with Michael Redd Oh, okay. Michael
- 1:15:18red was you know, he was he was taller and longer
- 1:15:22than people wanted to give his game credit for
- 1:15:23but it was it was a buttery smooth shot and His
- 1:15:29like and I mean just from beginning to end his
- 1:15:32footwork was underrated He would always square
- 1:15:35shoulders always square his body had fantastic
- 1:15:38body control Pretty follow through just a nice
- 1:15:42even water type flow to his shot getting that
- 1:15:47shot off. I've always, I was always impressed
- 1:15:50by Michael Reds by his shot. You know, always
- 1:15:53let go at the peak, snap at a risk, get the shot
- 1:15:55off. Yeah, that's what I was going to go with.
- 1:15:59Okay. It's a good one. I like it. I've got a
- 1:16:04few, cause you can always go with the best shooters
- 1:16:07like Curry, Ray Allen. They just had nice shots,
- 1:16:12nice smooth shots, different type of form. Glenn
- 1:16:17Rice, who else? I don't know that I have just
- 1:16:21one. I think I'm just gonna name people. No,
- 1:16:23you're not gonna name people. We are not gonna
- 1:16:25do that. I need you to give me a name. We can
- 1:16:29do honorable mentions all day. Look, there's
- 1:16:31been great shooters throughout the history of
- 1:16:33the league. We know that. Give me a name. I went
- 1:16:37with one name. Give me a name. One name? Yeah.
- 1:16:41Prettiest shot. Man, I'm gonna go with the hometown
- 1:16:46guy, man. Dale Curry. Okay. All right. Mr. Fundamental
- 1:16:54Shot himself passed those genetics off and created
- 1:16:57the best shooter of NBA history, Steph Curry.
- 1:17:01Exactly. I think Dale had a smoother release.
- 1:17:07Everything shot, right? I mean, that thing was
- 1:17:10quick and... I'm going to go Del Curry. You made
- 1:17:13me choose. Yeah, you had to pick one. I'm going
- 1:17:15to say Del Curry. All right. So that's another
- 1:17:23episode of Fanatically Speaking. I'm Kent, the
