- 0:02- Hello, and this is your Pop Culture Junkie Pop.
- 0:10I'm Shauna.
- 0:11- And this is Olivia.
- 0:13- And Olivia, what do you recommend
- 0:15to our listeners this week?
- 0:17- So I am recommending a show
- 0:20that I have not been able to stop thinking about
- 0:22since I watched it.
- 0:24It came out about a month ago, it's amazing.
- 0:27It's called Overcompensating.
- 0:29It's on Prime.
- 0:31And it is by Benito Skinner.
- 0:35It's written and created by him.
- 0:37And if that name sounds familiar,
- 0:40it is because he is Benny Drama
- 0:43on TikTok, Instagram, everywhere.
- 0:46And he's always done like little skits.
- 0:49He's really famous for his Kim Kardashian,
- 0:53Courtney Kardashian impressions.
- 0:54He's like a very attractive gay man.
- 0:57So is he the one who they have the cups and they know?
- 1:00- That's a different one.
- 1:01He is in the show though.
- 1:03So Benito Skinner is Benny Drama online,
- 1:08but he's kind of moved out of just being
- 1:11like a TikTok or Instagram person
- 1:14and of course he has a show now.
- 1:16But he's really kind of like queued into
- 1:19the kind of like celebrities.
- 1:23He's like, he's really good friends with Charlie X.
- 1:25He's actually an executive producer for the show.
- 1:29But he does a podcast with Mary Beth Barone as well.
- 1:34And this is so funny.
- 1:37So it is a college show.
- 1:40It's kind of like a goofy euphoria like.
- 1:45- Oh, funny.
- 1:46- But it's like funny.
- 1:47It's like a...
- 1:49- It's a four-year-old.
- 1:49- It's funny.
- 1:50- No, yeah.
- 1:51Like it's not like such a heavy...
- 1:54- Yeah. - Kind of like that vibe, like party kids.
- 1:57And it's set in college.
- 1:59So we're not watching high school trauma.
- 2:02But it's honestly so amazing.
- 2:04So overcompensating is about this football player
- 2:09from Idaho figuring out if he's gay and going to college.
- 2:15And it's so incredibly funny.
- 2:18I bingeed it all in one day.
- 2:20I was laughing so hard.
- 2:22It's also a time capsule.
- 2:23So if you were in college from the years of like 2011 to 2016,
- 2:28you are gonna have so many niche references.
- 2:32It is so iconic.
- 2:35What they were doing, the outfits, the costumes.
- 2:37I loved it.
- 2:38- That sounds great.
- 2:40That was your college years.
- 2:42- Yeah.
- 2:43- That was, Sean, it was the workforce.
- 2:46- Yep, you know.
- 2:47- And just a baby.
- 2:49- It get baby.
- 2:50- Well, it's a sound thing.
- 2:51- It's a baby.
- 2:52- Yeah, highly recommend.
- 2:54- And one more time, what's it called
- 2:55and where could people watch it?
- 2:56- It's called overcompensating.
- 2:58You can watch it on Prime.
- 2:59And please do because I really want them to pick it up
- 3:02for a season two.
- 3:04And Prime will cancel the show.
- 3:06- Real fast. - They really will.
- 3:08- They really will.
- 3:09- I typically pop two books by the same author
- 3:12because I read them so quickly.
- 3:15The author is Christian Ritter.
- 3:17Yes, that Christian Ritter, known as Jessica Jones
- 3:22in the MCU and also for her character on it.
- 3:26Right.
- 3:27Amongst other things to trust the B.
- 3:29at apartment 23.
- 3:30I adore her.
- 3:32She wrote her first book called "Bonfire,"
- 3:35about November 2017.
- 3:37And it's about a woman who travels back to her hometown
- 3:41after trying to leave her a popular high school past
- 3:46behind her, but then she becomes a lawyer
- 3:48and has to investigate some things that are going down.
- 3:52This book was a slow burn, but so good, so juicy, so well written.
- 3:57I did a combination of reading the paperback
- 4:02and listening to it on book on tape.
- 4:05(laughing)
- 4:08Her second book, which I actually read first,
- 4:10is called "Retreat."
- 4:12That one just came out recently in 2025.
- 4:15This one was incredible.
- 4:17So this is about a beautiful con artist who kind of
- 4:21gets herself weaved in to an art dealing culture
- 4:26where she takes over an identity of a woman she believes
- 4:30to be dead and wants to just go on a relaxing vacation
- 4:35while also--
- 4:36As conwoman somebody.
- 4:38Yes, as conwoman I want to do.
- 4:41Did you finish this one yet, Olivia?
- 4:44No, I need to get the physical book because I will say
- 4:47I'm an avid audiobook listener and she does the
- 4:52audiobook narration and I think she has a phenomenal voice,
- 4:56but every character, even the men, I picture as
- 5:00Kristen Ritter, either dressed up as that person or in drag.
- 5:05And it wasn't working for me.
- 5:08I think she would do a really great narration
- 5:11for like one character.
- 5:13So it's taking me out of it, but I do think that I'd
- 5:16get as a physical book.
- 5:17I'm halfway through it.
- 5:18So I'm close, but it's going to give her two purchases there.
- 5:23I definitely do recommend getting the paper back copy of it.
- 5:27It is a twist ending.
- 5:29It's so entertaining.
- 5:31And I really want her to write more novels.
- 5:33It kind of got me into this thing that I've
- 5:35been right now with kind of four slash mystery, murder
- 5:39mystery.
- 5:40That's the kick that I'm on right now with my books.
- 5:42And it is all thanks to Kristen Ritter.
- 5:44So I am definitely going to pop both Bonfire and Retreat,
- 5:48where you can find wherever books are sold.
- 5:50And you can listen to them.
- 5:52Or book tape.
- 5:53Right.
- 5:54Listen to your book on tape.
- 5:55Right.
- 5:55Listen to you unspotted.
- 5:57My book on tape.
- 5:59I love pop books, I'm taking.
- 6:02So that is going to be your PCJ Pop for this week.
- 6:06Make sure to check out Overcompensating and also
- 6:10Retreat and Bonfire.
