Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Self-Consciousness of the Ego-Personality Is Not the Same as Observing from the Witness Consciousness
Transcript
- 0:01There is a phenomenon that is called entering the Zone.
- 0:06This is a state of consciousness where one essentially acts
- 0:09without the involvement of the ego and identifies with the
- 0:13action. One is undertaking amazing
- 0:17results. Or performance has come about
- 0:19through entry into the zone. There's a one pointed
- 0:23concentration on the focused action or event.
- 0:28If one becomes self-conscious, the status dissolves and the
- 0:32individual falls back into their ordinary level of ability with
- 0:36all its limitations obstacles and difficulties.
- 0:42For those who seek to follow the yogic path, confusion may arise
- 0:47with the apparent conflict between being totally immersed.
- 0:50In the action of the nature versus the prescription, to step
- 0:54back, and become the witness Consciousness.
- 0:56Observing the nature The sense of observing oneself with a
- 1:01critical eye and the midst of action breaks.
- 1:04The type of one pointed concentration needed for
- 1:08successful action in the world. This is the opposite of being in
- 1:14the zone. It is also still rooted in the
- 1:17ego with all the worry fear and insecurity that comes with the
- 1:22limitations of any human individual who is trying to
- 1:26compare himself to others. To some imaginary concept about
- 1:31who he is, what the result should be and how things should
- 1:35be understood and appreciated by others.
- 1:40Once when shifts to the standpoint of the purusa, the
- 1:43witness Consciousness there, occurs a true separation between
- 1:48the soul as witness and the nature as actor.
- 1:52The sole witness does not interfere in the action of the
- 1:55nature, allowing, the complete concentration needed, without
- 2:00involvement of the ego personality or the desire soul
- 2:05in weighing evaluating or judging the action.
- 2:09Or the result. The mother observes well.
- 2:15If you want to do something well whatever it may be any kind of
- 2:18work. The least thing play a game,
- 2:22write a book, do painting or music, or run a race, anything
- 2:27at all. If you want to do it.
- 2:30Well, you must become what you were doing and not remain.
- 2:34A small person. Looking at himself doing it for
- 2:39if one looks at oneself acting one is one is still in
- 2:43complicity with the Ego. If in oneself one succeeds in
- 2:48becoming what one does? It is a great progress in the
- 2:52least little details. One must learn this.
- 2:55Take a very amusing instance. You want to fill a bottle from
- 2:59another bottle. You concentrate, you may try it
- 3:03as a discipline as a gymnastic. Well, as long as you are, the
- 3:08bottle to be filled the bottle from which one pores and the
- 3:12movement of pouring, as long as you were only this all goes
- 3:17well. But if unfortunately, you think
- 3:21at a given moment, ah, it's getting on.
- 3:24Well, I'm managing. Well, the next minute its bills
- 3:28over it is the same for everything.
- 3:31For everything that is why work is a good means of discipline.
- 3:36For if you want to do the work properly, you must become the
- 3:40work. Instead of being someone who
- 3:42works, otherwise you will never do it.
- 3:45Well, if you remain someone who works, and besides, if your
- 3:51thoughts go vagabonding, then you may be sure that if you are
- 3:55handling, fragile things, they will break.
- 3:58If you are cooking, you will burn something, or if you are
- 4:01playing a game, you will miss all the balls.
- 4:05It is here in this, that work is a great discipline.
- 4:09We're truly. You want to do it?
- 4:10Well this is the only way of doing it.
- 4:15Take someone who is writing a book for instance, if you looks
- 4:19at himself writing the book you can't imagine how dull the book
- 4:23will become it. Smells immediately of the small
- 4:27human personality, which is there and it loses all its
- 4:31value. When a painter, paints a
- 4:34picture, if he observes himself painting the picture, the
- 4:38picture will never be good. It will always be a kind of
- 4:42projection of the painters personality.
- 4:45It will be without life without Force Without Beauty.
- 4:51But if all of a sudden he becomes the thing, he wants to
- 4:55express. If he becomes the brushes, the
- 4:58painting, the canvas, the subject, the image that colors
- 5:02the value though. All thing and is entirely inside
- 5:06it and lives. It he will make something
- 5:09magnificent for everything, everything it is, the same.
- 5:16There is the nothing, which cannot be a yogic discipline, if
- 5:19one does it properly and if it is not done properly, even to
- 5:25pasilla will be of no use and will lead you nowhere for it is
- 5:30the same thing. If you do your depression all
- 5:33the time, observing yourself doing it and telling yourself,
- 5:37Am I making any progress? Is this going to be better?
- 5:41Am I going to succeed? Then it is your ego, you know,
- 5:46which becomes more and more enormous and occupies the whole
- 5:50place and there is no room for anything else.
- 5:56What gives most the feeling of inferiority of limitation
- 6:00smallness? Impotence is always this turning
- 6:04back upon oneself. This shutting oneself up in the
- 6:07bounds of a microscopic ego. One must widen oneself, open the
- 6:12doors. And the best way is to be able
- 6:16to concentrate upon what one is doing.
- 6:19Instead of concentrating upon oneself, End quote, reference
