- 0:00Speaker 1: Dating is hard enough, but now we've got the algorithm
- 0:03Speaker 1: to influence us. So Cosmo had a really interesting take
- 0:06Speaker 1: on dating and our Instagram algorithm, our TikTok algorithm. We
- 0:10Speaker 1: are constantly seeing cheating stories, red flag videos, nightmare dates,
- 0:16Speaker 1: dump him content. And it can actually start shaping like
- 0:19Speaker 1: how we see relationships and how we see relationships. things
- 0:23Speaker 1: that happen in relationships. And they put together this whole
- 0:27Speaker 1: thing of things that the algorithm has made more negative
- 0:32Speaker 1: and isn't necessarily a negative thing in dating.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So the first one, actually, I totally agree with.
- 0:37Speaker 1: If you don't get a text back right away, that
- 0:40Speaker 1: means they're not interested. According to the algorithm, you might
- 0:43Speaker 1: think that, right? Because you've seen all the stories. You've
- 0:45Speaker 1: seen all the soft stories about all these people. And
- 0:48Speaker 1: then all of a sudden you're like, well, maybe it doesn't.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Mean they've lost interest.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Maybe they're just like slammed at work and they did
- 0:54Speaker 1: that thing that we've all done before where you look
- 0:56Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, I really want to respond to that,
- 0:58Speaker 1: but I'm busy right now.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I'll do it later.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And then forgot for a little while.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Not everybody's attached to their phone.
- 1:03Speaker 3: It's such an important thing to remember, try to remember
- 1:05Speaker 3: what the other person is doing that, They might not
- 1:08Speaker 3: be able to answer.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Maybe they fell asleep.
- 1:11Speaker 1: They could have fallen asleep. But that's what the Cosmo
- 1:14Speaker 1: is saying. But because the algorithm has filled our head
- 1:17Speaker 1: with so many negative things in dating, we just automatically assume, oh, well,
- 1:21Speaker 1: he's probably just not interested anymore. Then treating every flaw
- 1:25Speaker 1: like a red flag. Every flag isn't a red flag.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Some are.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Some definitely are, right?
- 1:31Speaker 3: But you could have one or two red flags and
- 1:34Speaker 3: 75 green flags, and that's okay. That works out because
- 1:36Speaker 3: everybody's got red flags.
- 1:37Speaker 1: You're like, listen, I know he's a pathological liar, right?
- 1:40Speaker 2: That's a big red flag. How can I make that
- 1:43Speaker 2: pathological liar?
- 1:44Speaker 1: But the good news is I know when he's lying.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's like murder is a red flag.
- 1:50Speaker 3: But maybe leaving the whiskers in the sink is a
- 1:53Speaker 3: red flag, and you can.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Deal with that.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So then they say diagnosing everyone as avoidant or narcissistic.
- 2:01Speaker 1: This is a huge thing.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Those are buzzwords big time, right?
- 2:03Speaker 5: Yeah, this is huge.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The algorithm says everyone's a narcissist, everyone's avoidant, right? But
- 2:07Speaker 1: it's not necessarily always the case. Now, I'm not saying
- 2:11Speaker 1: that these aren't out there, that these aren't real things
- 2:14Speaker 1: that happen in relationships, but Cosmo is basically saying that
- 2:17Speaker 1: because of our algorithm, we're We see this a lot more,
- 2:20Speaker 1: maybe even more than it actually is happening. Like thinking
- 2:23Speaker 1: a relationship is boring because it isn't dramatic. That might
- 2:26Speaker 1: actually just mean you have a healthy relationship.
- 2:29Speaker 6: Like that's okay to feel secure a little bit.
- 2:32Speaker 1: The relationship isn't boring because you are not constantly fighting
- 2:35Speaker 1: or having crazy things happen to you guys. For instance,
- 2:38Speaker 1: comparing your partner to strangers online. That can be that
- 2:43Speaker 1: the algorithm just pushes that, right? expecting cheating because your
- 2:48Speaker 1: feed is full of cheating stories. This is a big
- 2:51Speaker 1: one because I like, if you've ever been cheated on,
- 2:54Speaker 1: it's kind of hard in a relationship when you see
- 2:56Speaker 1: something kind of shady to.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Go, obviously they're cheating.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Because we've seen this happen over and over again.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:03Speaker 2: You just see conclusions.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Because you're like, I've seen this movie before.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And we've seen it time and time again on War
- 3:08Speaker 1: of the Roses. Like it's not always the case.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But still, once a cheater, always a cheater. Well, not
- 3:13Speaker 2: always the.
- 3:13Speaker 7: Case, right?
- 3:14Speaker 1: And then finally, asking TikTok, what's your partner behavior really means?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Like TikTok doesn't know what your partner's behavior really means.
- 3:23Speaker 2: It's TikTok.
- 3:24Speaker 3: That's a good point. So what you say actually is
- 3:26Speaker 3: like you started off by saying if you're dating. So
- 3:29Speaker 3: because you're dating, you're seeing and you're probably spending more
- 3:32Speaker 3: than two seconds on one video, which means all time.
- 3:35Speaker 3: the relationship TikToks and Instagram reels are coming your way.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That's what your feed gives you.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And that's your algorithm because you're doing that. So you're seeing,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and if you see a negative one, you're just getting
- 3:43Speaker 3: nonstop negative ones. You know, I'm glad you brought this up.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I'd like to switch gears if I may.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I would love to.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I want to bring up what your algorithm now is
- 3:52Speaker 3: because of something you clicked on by accident or for
- 3:55Speaker 3: a second. You were just interested in it.
- 3:56Speaker 2: For a second.
- 3:57Speaker 5: So you think because of the algorithm, the whole world's
- 3:59Speaker 5: following this thing because it's everywhere.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Like I've had conversation. Actually, I've had conversations with Rich
- 4:03Speaker 3: in the past. It's about in the morning. We're going
- 4:05Speaker 3: to we come in here. We're going to talk about
- 4:06Speaker 3: we're going to do on the show that day. And
- 4:07Speaker 3: he'll go, this is blowing up. And I'm like, I
- 4:10Speaker 3: don't I don't see it. And it's because that's his algorithm.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Right.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That's what it comes down to. Like, oh, that in
- 4:14Speaker 3: his algorithm is usually. You know, you've got a lot
- 4:17Speaker 3: of stuff that's topical news stories or space.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Aliens. Are you doing this today because of you?
- 4:22Speaker 7: What?
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know what my algorithm is today? Let me guess.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Coffee pots. You are 100% right.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Coffee pots.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Mine's blowing up with coffee pots. Ninja, espresso, Nespresso. That's
- 4:33Speaker 2: all I got.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Good.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I can't wait.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Mine is that too, but there's a few things. Mine
- 4:37Speaker 3: is coffee pots and feet. But 877-937-1047, what is your algorithm?
- 4:43Speaker 2: What has it turned into.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Because of something you innocently looked at for two seconds?
- 4:47Speaker 2: We'll talk to you next. It's John Jay and Rich.
- 5:00Speaker 3: So Kyle just did a story off of Cosmo Magazine
- 5:02Speaker 3: about how algorithms can affect dating. If you're dating, you
- 5:06Speaker 3: see one negative video about red flags and cheating, and
- 5:09Speaker 3: that's your whole feed. So we wanted to take it
- 5:12Speaker 3: to what is your algorithm? You clicked on something. Like
- 5:15Speaker 3: I brought up on the air how I was looking
- 5:16Speaker 3: for a non-plastic coffee pot. Rich's phone heard that, and
- 5:20Speaker 3: now Rich's phone has got coffee pots, and so does mine.
- 5:23Speaker 3: I got some good bargain shopping for you.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of Kyle's feet.
- 5:25Speaker 3: What's funny about my algorithm, I get unfugged feet pictures
- 5:29Speaker 3: sent to my algorithm a lot.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Oh, that's wild. And I'll look at it and go, oh,
- 5:33Speaker 2: that's Kyle. Oh, yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 3: But also, I don't know if you guys have seen
- 5:36Speaker 3: this yet. I clicked on a video. Sometimes you get
- 5:39Speaker 3: to see it in your FYP. You click on something
- 5:40Speaker 3: for a second and now that's all you get. Have
- 5:43Speaker 3: you seen the people like in weird countries that are
- 5:45Speaker 3: making food with their feet or they're cooking? It's really
- 5:50Speaker 3: gross atmosphere. It's street food, but it looks really good.
- 5:53Speaker 3: You guys ever seen those?
- 5:53Speaker 6: Yeah, I know what you're talking about. I've seen the
- 5:55Speaker 6: ones where it's like the bees are all in the juice.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, all the bugs and everything.
- 5:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I get that in my feed. I get the coffee
- 6:03Speaker 3: pots in my feed. There was a period where I
- 6:05Speaker 3: was getting couches. Remember, I was looking for a couch?
- 6:07Speaker 3: Non-stop couches. I saw a video of a woman in
- 6:10Speaker 3: another country and a cow is pooping and she catches
- 6:15Speaker 3: the poop with her hands. It's like she's in a village.
- 6:17Speaker 3: It must be something to do with how they're going
- 6:19Speaker 3: to build their house or something. But now I just
- 6:21Speaker 3: get tons of videos. It was like documentary videos of
- 6:26Speaker 3: people in other countries pooping. catching the excrement from animals
- 6:30Speaker 3: to do stuff with it. On my Twitter account, it's
- 6:33Speaker 3: way worse than my Twitter account. I watched one of
- 6:36Speaker 3: those To Catch a Predator things for a second. Now
- 6:38Speaker 3: my whole feed is that. I also have people in
- 6:42Speaker 3: high school beating up each other. Have you clicked on
- 6:44Speaker 3: one of those yet?
- 6:45Speaker 6: No, but Kadeem's Twitter feed makes me suspicious about what
- 6:49Speaker 6: he's actually clicking on.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Why? I never looked at it that way.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Because it's like.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Every single time, it's like, because you know X, it's
- 6:56Speaker 6: not censored.
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's not censored at all. It's like dirty. I'm like, ew,
- 7:01Speaker 2: are you?
- 7:01Speaker 6: It's like his own little porn hub on there.
- 7:03Speaker 3: You watch one little choking video and the.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Next thing you know.
- 7:08Speaker 6: I get really disturbed. It's like a jump scare.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. All I get is who's the best
- 7:12Speaker 2: 90s band on my Twitter.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Oh, that doesn't sound very funny. Haley, what did you
- 7:16Speaker 3: click on? What's one thing you clicked on and your
- 7:18Speaker 3: algorithm's all messed up now?
- 7:19Speaker 4: I don't know if I clicked on anything, but I
- 7:21Speaker 4: keep getting these ads for excessive sweating disease. But it's
- 7:26Speaker 4: a hand disease very specifically. And I've never known anyone
- 7:29Speaker 4: to have this. I definitely don't have this. I never
- 7:32Speaker 4: pressed on anything to get this information.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And I'll block them.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And I still get them. So I feel like I'm
- 7:40Speaker 4: being haunted at this point.
- 7:42Speaker 2: There's got to be a way to reset your algorithm.
- 7:44Speaker 2: There should be. There probably is. There should be. You've
- 7:46Speaker 2: got to look at it.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Do you see any of the ones where you see–
- 7:49Speaker 5: I feel like it's all AI now too. Pour cinnamon
- 7:53Speaker 5: on pineapple and watch what happens. Pharmacists will go out
- 7:56Speaker 5: of business. I probably get 40 of those a day.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I haven't seen one of those.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 8:00Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about.
- 8:01Speaker 1: My algorithm is literally fashion, crafting, and like cooking, like food.
- 8:07Speaker 7: That's it.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That's all I get.
- 8:08Speaker 1: What do you guys think this is all about?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Mine's crazy, man.
- 8:10Speaker 6: It depends on which Instagram account I'm on, truthfully.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Yeah, like if I'm on my personal one, a lot
- 8:16Speaker 6: of it is like, here's how to be an influencer
- 8:18Speaker 6: and make a million dollars.
- 8:20Speaker 3: You know, on my ex, I clicked on like an
- 8:25Speaker 3: ASU football thing. I was like, oh, I'm going to
- 8:27Speaker 3: follow the coach at ASU football. And now my feed
- 8:29Speaker 3: is just all sports. And I'm like, wait a minute,
- 8:33Speaker 3: bring back the high school people beating each other up.
- 8:36Speaker 6: What?
- 8:37Speaker 3: We don't want that either.
- 8:39Speaker 6: I have not seen the brawls.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Oh, the brawls are crazy when you click on something.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I couldn't watch that. It's really tough. It's really tough.
- 8:46Speaker 3: But anyway, Haley, thanks for calling in. Matt, what about you?
- 8:49Speaker 3: What messed up your algorithm?
- 8:51Speaker 7: My algorithm showed me this man who restores old mannequins,
- 8:55Speaker 7: but he totally makes them look like real people. And
- 8:57Speaker 7: I watched him take this crazy 1970s mannequin with no
- 9:01Speaker 7: face and give it like realistic skin, teeth, eyes. And
- 9:04Speaker 7: then he put it in his bedroom and And I honestly,
- 9:08Speaker 7: I was thinking it was kind of a cool video,
- 9:11Speaker 7: and then I saw.
- 9:11Speaker 8: Him addressing a comment that said, a lot of people
- 9:16Speaker 8: ask why I sleep with my mannequins.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Why do people have to ask that? And then I
- 9:20Speaker 7: realized I needed to get out of this side of
- 9:22Speaker 7: TikTok immediately. But, bro, there's, like, one other thing, too.
- 9:26Speaker 8: So, like... Dual lingo, like, I'm always trying to use
- 9:30Speaker 8: it to learn stuff, and, like, the last time I
- 9:33Speaker 8: was on there, I got some ad that was just, like,
- 9:35Speaker 8: some AI Asian girl that's.
- 9:37Speaker 7: Just, like, going, and then there's something blurred out. I'm like, bro,
- 9:42Speaker 7: I'm not trying to see all this.
- 9:43Speaker 8: I'm literally just trying to, like, learn a language, and look,
- 9:47Speaker 8: it's not just me, because I went on to Reddit and, like,
- 9:49Speaker 8: Moms are talking about it while their daughters are trying
- 9:53Speaker 8: to learn a language. They're getting all these weird adult
- 9:55Speaker 8: ads and stuff.
- 9:56Speaker 7: And I'm just like, they got to change their sponsors. Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Phone is going to pick up all the stuff you
- 10:01Speaker 2: just said.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Yeah, probably.
- 10:03Speaker 2: All right, Matt, thanks for calling in, man.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Yeah, no problem.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Michelle, what's in your algorithm?
- 10:10Speaker 8: Yes.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Oh my God.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:12Speaker 9: So I started getting videos of like things that morticians
- 10:16Speaker 9: do to our bodies and And one was something I
- 10:19Speaker 9: never even thought about, uh, something like that they do
- 10:24Speaker 9: to our bodies so that we don't leak after we pass.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I feel like I remember a former member of the
- 10:32Speaker 1: show grant talking about this.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Because they have to sew.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Everything up, I think.
- 10:38Speaker 2: So what do they do to make you not leak?
- 10:41Speaker 9: Um, let's see, how can I say that's radio appropriate? Um, We,
- 10:46Speaker 9: I don't know how to say it. Like they put
- 10:49Speaker 9: something in a part of our body that where things
- 10:52Speaker 9: come out.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Like a cork?
- 10:55Speaker 4: What is it?
- 10:55Speaker 6: A cork?
- 10:56Speaker 4: Sure.
- 10:57Speaker 9: You could call it that. And like online, they called
- 11:00Speaker 9: it something else, like a plug.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Oh, wow. How exciting. I wonder if that'll come up
- 11:04Speaker 2: in my feed. I don't want that.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I want to see autopsies.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Too much information. I saw.
- 11:10Speaker 9: From sourdough to this.
- 11:14Speaker 4: That's great.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Thanks, Michelle. Hearing it now. Sourdough to this. That's really funny.
- 11:21Speaker 2: If you have any other ones, shoot us a call,
- 11:22Speaker 2: 877-937-1047 or DM at John J. Van Ness. It's John J.
- 11:24Speaker 4: And Rich.
