• 3:26
Speaker 2: It's at the museum, it's actually at the museum and he is going to be there.
• 3:27
  Speaker 2: Who's he?
• 3:28
Speaker 2: Mr Hall, and I'm not sure if George is going to be there or not, but yeah, it's a big deal.
• 3:33
  Speaker 1: Interesting.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Hall tells his story, his life, his cars, his relationship with Chevrolet, his partnership with Hap Sharp, his battles with sanctioning body bureaucracies, for the first time to award-winning author George Levy.
• 3:47
Speaker 1: This is an authorized biography of Jim Hall, so it's good.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: Do you know what a chaparral is?
• 3:55
Speaker 4: It's the style of race car.
• 3:59
  Speaker 1: It is.
• 3:59
Speaker 1: It's a bodied race car, if memory serves, and I was enamored by it.
• 4:07
Speaker 1: This is back in the 60s, when this all started.
• 4:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, very radical design back then.
• 4:12
Speaker 4: It was, in my opinion, yep, it was.
• 4:15
  Speaker 1: And let's see.
• 4:17
Speaker 1: There are other voices in the book called.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: You know these names Jackie Stewart, dan Gurney.
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Oh man, these names Jackie Stewart, dan Gurney, roger Penske, jackie Ickx, john Bernard, gordon Murray, adrian Newey.
• 4:30
  Speaker 4: Brian Redman Don.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: Garlitz, dick Smothers, bernie Ecclestone and Alan Bobby Unser.
• 4:39
  Speaker 4: That's one thing.
• 4:40
Speaker 4: The Smothers brothers were into racing, especially Dick Smothers.
• 4:43
  Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
• 4:44
Speaker 4: They were Like a celebrity racing team team, sort of like the guy, the uh, the kid from malcolm in the middle, muniz, he is in uh racing, nascar racing, he does arca and all that.
• 4:57
Speaker 1: yeah, I didn't realize that permian basin petroleum museum will host the june 29th launch in the legendary Midland where the chaparrales were built and where they were tested at Hall's iconic Rattlesnake Raceway.
• 5:12
Speaker 1: Ooh, so Very cool.
• 5:15
Speaker 1: Anyway, a limited number of books will be signed by Hall and be made available by the museum, so if you'd like to get more information on that, go to evropublishingcom.
• 5:29
Speaker 4: I wonder if they would have information on how to get there and you know the area, on what to do, hotels and all that.
• 5:37
  Speaker 4: Yeah, Permian.
• 5:38
  Speaker 1: Basin Petroleum Museum.
• 5:40
  Speaker 1: Look that up.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, Price of the book is $80.
• 5:46
Speaker 1: Not cheap, but you know I buy books for pictures.
• 5:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a coffee table type book.
• 5:51
Speaker 2: Did he send you one?
• 5:53
Speaker 2: No, no, this kind of came up at the last minute, so I think we can talk to him now he's on the phone.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: Oh, he is Okay.
• 6:04
Speaker 1: George, we can hear you, hear you yeah, you need to turn the audio off on your computer, though, if you're going to use the phone audio we've had all sorts of technical issues this morning we've got a computer that's on, but we don't know what it does yeah, well, you know, george, we apologize, but apparently we don't need to apologize too far, because I see a big smile on your face.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: You kind of get it, you know.
• 6:31
  Speaker 3: Good story.
• 6:32
Speaker 3: It may be on my end.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: I'm not sure what's on my end.
• 6:34
Speaker 3: Oh well, don't worry about it.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: It's probably on our end too, so we'll get married.
• 6:38
Speaker 1: Good story, listen, I love the book.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: Tell me what, for everybody that's listening or watching, what made it a Chaparral?
• 6:49
Speaker 1: It's a certain kind of car, a bodied car.
• 6:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Jim and Chaparral more than anything else stood for innovation and a very Texas-style innovation.
• 7:05
Speaker 3: I think during the 50s and 60s Chaparral was kind of the NASA of international motor racing.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Where did the Chaparral race?
• 7:17
  Speaker 1: In what division?
• 7:18
  Speaker 1: What sanctioning body?
• 7:22
Speaker 3: It was road racing, both in America and and abroad.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: They competed uh in the can-am uh series, which would be, I guess, most analogous to today's imsa uh.
• 7:35
Speaker 3: They competed at the 24 hours of lamar the uh, nurburgring all the great tracks around the world and and they won major races in every category they competed in.
• 7:48
Speaker 1: How old is Jim now?
• 7:52
Speaker 3: Jim, in about another 30 days, give or take is going to be 89 years old.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: I was going to say somewhere around 90, because I remember him having this huge mark on the auto racing industry, him having this huge mark on the auto racing industry.
• 8:08
Speaker 1: There was a guy that and I don't remember what his name was, but he lived in my neighborhood back in the 60s and he had a Chaparral-style car Now, whether it was original or whatever, but he trailered it around in an open trailer and so you could see the car when he'd pull out.
• 8:26
Speaker 1: And it was sponsored by Prince's Hamburgers, which means nothing to you here, but it is iconic hamburger joint back in the day, drive-in style hamburgers, and I'll never forget the car because it was so unique looking there wasn't anything else like it.
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, all of Jim's cars and he had a partner, by the way, half Sharp, at the beginning.
• 8:53
Speaker 3: And Jim was a Caltech engineering grad and he drove most of the design and engineering of the cars and they all were very innovative.
• 9:04
Speaker 3: But probably the one thing above everything else that drove the way the cars looked was downforce.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: In the 60s no one in racing thought about downforce, putting you know, using the air flowing over and under and around the car to press the car down against the track for greater traction.
• 9:27
Speaker 3: Jim introduced the concept of downforce, introduced wings to cars and to give you an idea of how transformational that was, not only does every single type of racing car today take downforce into consideration as one of the primary design directives, but, as you guys know, every high-performance road car now Corvettes, ferraris, porsches they all brag about how much downforce they're creating as they go down the road.
• 9:59
Speaker 3: Did he know Carroll Shelby?
• 10:01
Speaker 3: He not only knew Carroll Shelby, he was in business with Carroll In the mid-50s.
• 10:10
Speaker 3: Carroll wanted to earn some money.
• 10:16
Speaker 3: He was an amateur racer the road racing in those days, the SCCA forbid professional racers and sponsorships.
• 10:25
Speaker 3: So Carroll was a terrific racer himself.
• 10:28
Speaker 3: Jim was just graduating from college and Carroll got together with Jim's older brother, dick Hall, and opened Carroll Shelby Sport Cars in Dallas, and when Jim graduated from Caltech, he had been promised a job at General Motors.
• 10:45
Speaker 3: The economy went through a downturn, they weren't hiring, and so Jim actually went to work at Carl Shelby Sport Cars, and that's how he got his start in racing.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: And I assume that that part of the story is in the book.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: It is indeed yes.
• 11:00
Speaker 4: Did AJ Foyt have a Chaparral during some of the early Indy runs that he had?
• 11:07
Speaker 4: I don't know if he drove a Chaparral or didn't he own a team that had a Chaparral?
• 11:12
Speaker 4: I'm guessing this comes to mind.
• 11:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, no worries, as a fellow Texan, they were rivals.
• 11:20
Speaker 3: Jim never sold Chaparrals and any of the mid-engine Chaparralral's and any of the mid-engine Chaparral sports cars or any of the Indy cars.
• 11:29
Speaker 3: They never sold them to other teams, they always went in alone.
• 11:34
Speaker 3: Aj didn't have one Interesting.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: but you know, jim rubbed elbows with a lot of famous people apparently.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: I know that you've got some interviews with Jackie Stewart, roger Penske, jackie Icks of all people.
• 11:54
Speaker 1: You don't hear that name very often anymore, but these are really forerunners in auto racing in auto racing.
• 12:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, all those guys that you mentioned drove for Jim in various cars Johnny Rutherford, al Unser you know the list of Phil Hill who was America's first world champion they all drove for Chaparral.
• 12:20
Speaker 3: When Jackie Stewart drove for Chaparral in 1970 in the famous fan car or sucker car, jackie was contracted to Ford.
• 12:31
Speaker 3: He was contracted to Goodyear as sponsors innovative car, so much that he went and drove this Chevy-powered Firestone-tired car at Watkins.
• 12:51
  Speaker 1: Glen, Interesting story.
• 12:53
Speaker 1: So tell me about the Midland Texas annual chaparral party on the patio.
• 13:00
Speaker 1: Are you going to go?
• 13:02
Speaker 3: Are you going to go?
• 13:03
Speaker 3: I'm going to go.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: More importantly, you know a whole bunch of people related to the Chaparral effort are going to be there.
• 13:11
Speaker 3: It's an annual party, like it sounds, like it's a barbecue.
• 13:15
Speaker 3: It's this coming Saturday or a week from today, the 29th, in Midland, texas.
• 13:21
Speaker 3: There may still be tickets, so if anybody else there wants to go, they should contact the Petroleum Museum in Midland and basically once a year they have a barbecue.
• 13:32
Speaker 3: They take one of the cars out of the museum All the chaperones are on display in the Petroleum Museum on a permanent exhibit.
• 13:40
Speaker 3: They take one of the cars out, do some demonstration laps out in front of the track.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: They take one of the cars out, do some demonstration laps out in front of the track, and then after dinner Jim holds court and answers questions and tells stories, and this year there's the added element that the launch of the book is taking place there.
• 13:56
Speaker 1: I want to go, yep.
• 14:03
Speaker 3: It's only a day's drive for us to get out there.
• 14:05
Speaker 3: You guys, I tell you I mean, I'm the president of the motorsports hall of fame of america.
• 14:10
Speaker 3: We hold uh annual induction ceremonies, which are very highly regarded that you and I have both been to uh major automotive events.
• 14:19
Speaker 3: This is a very special thing and this year in particular, uh I I don't know if they you know the book, that cover photo on the book was taken by a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer by the name of Bob Jackson, and he's won the Pulitzer Prize for a photo he took in Texas, in Dallas, on November 24th of 1963, the famous shot of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald.
• 14:52
Speaker 3: That was Bob Jackson.
• 14:54
Speaker 3: 30 or 40 of his photos are in the book and he's going to be at the party next week.
• 15:00
  Speaker 3: Oh my God.
• 15:04
Speaker 1: So I mean we're going to get lots of bonuses by attending this.
• 15:07
Speaker 1: Is there a fee to attend it?
• 15:09
  Speaker 1: Can anybody attend?
• 15:12
Speaker 3: So anybody can attend.
• 15:13
Speaker 3: There is a fee.
• 15:15
Speaker 3: I think the way the tickets work at the museum is that you have to become a member of the Chaparral pit crew is what they call it or kind of the fan club, but that's $50, and that gets you admission to the event.
• 15:35
Speaker 3: It's as simple as that.
• 15:39
Speaker 1: Well, I know that you're looking for it.
• 15:41
Speaker 1: Where do you live?
• 15:44
Speaker 3: I live in Daytona Beach, florida.
• 15:46
Speaker 3: The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is based here and that's why I'm here.
• 15:51
  Speaker 1: Yeah, very good.
• 15:52
Speaker 1: Well, my daughter actually went to school at Embry-Riddle for a short period of time, which is right across from you, exactly.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, what a great book, lucky you.
• 16:05
Speaker 1: How long did it take you to write this?
• 16:10
Speaker 3: Jim and I worked on it for six or seven years, believe it or not.
• 16:18
Speaker 2: There were over 100 interviews.
• 16:19
Speaker 3: There were photos from not just Bob Jackson but my old friend Pete Biro and a lot of the other great, great motorsports photographers.
• 16:27
Speaker 3: There's a lot of information that's never been unveiled before, and it took some time for both of us.
• 16:33
Speaker 1: Well, I can only imagine the phone calls back and forth.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: The long-distance charges must have been huge.
• 16:40
Speaker 1: But all I can think of is that in a six-, a six or seven year odyssey, if you want to call it that, uh, to get this book written, there had to be a lot of back and forth.
• 16:54
Speaker 1: Hey, what do you tell me about this aspect?
• 16:57
Speaker 1: Tell me about this uh, how did you do this?
• 17:00
Speaker 1: When did this happen?
• 17:02
Speaker 1: That sort of thing?
• 17:02
Speaker 1: Is that the way it worked?
• 17:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a lot of back and forth like that, and then, of course, you have to verify everything, whether it was Jim or Jackie Stewart or Dan Gurney or anyone else that I spoke with.
• 17:20
Speaker 3: We all have imperfect memories, so the bane of every author is that you know you do an interview, you hear a great story and if the story is particularly good then you worry.
• 17:33
Speaker 3: Oh, I hope the heck I can verify that and fortunately all the stories in the book are things that we were able to verify.
• 17:42
Speaker 1: Well, george, it's called a tape recorder.
• 17:44
Speaker 1: My friend and for you and I, I mean especially at this point in my age that's become very important, because I can't remember things and it's very difficult, and especially when you get into details of writing a book.
• 18:02
Speaker 3: How many pages in the book?
• 18:03
Speaker 3: The book is close to 500 pages.
• 18:07
Speaker 3: There are close to that many photos.
• 18:08
  Speaker 3: Wow as well.
• 18:09
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, so you've certainly done your homework, and I know that it's going to pay off for you, because even I know of Jim Hall, I know the Chaparral's and especially the interviews that you've done with Jackie Ickx and others, brian Redman, don Garlitz of all people, the drag racer Dick Smothers and we were just talking about it before we got you on the air with us the fact that Dick was a big racing fan.
• 18:41
Speaker 3: You know, one of the real joys of this process is the conversations that you have and you know Dick is one of the most fascinating guys.
• 18:51
Speaker 3: If you talk to him you know that he's a really deep guy, interesting guy, and there are just so many great anecdotes, so many great stories in the book and it all comes from talking to people like that.
• 19:07
Speaker 1: The book is called Texas Legend Jim Hall and His Chaparrales.
• 19:10
Speaker 1: George Levy is the author and he's with us now.
• 19:13
Speaker 1: And, george, we thank you so much for joining us on a Saturday.
• 19:16
Speaker 1: I hope you have a wonderful day down there in Daytona Beach and I hope everybody gets to meet you and Jim Hall at the big event that's coming up next Saturday at the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum out in Midland.
• 19:29
Speaker 1: Thanks again for joining us.

• 22:07
Speaker 4: Well, I want a quick shout out to Joey Kramer.
• 22:10
Speaker 4: Joey Kramer is the drummer to Aerosmith, turned 73 years old yesterday.
• 22:13
Speaker 4: What a collection of snare drums he has.
• 22:15

• 22:17
Speaker 4: Um, have you ever wondered what the little black dots are around your windshield?
• 22:24
Speaker 4: Have you ever wondered why they're there?
• 22:26
Speaker 4: What are the purpose?
• 22:27

• 22:32

• 22:34
Speaker 4: Well, we've all seen them, those tiny black dots lining the edges of your windshield especially, especially on newer cars.
• 22:40
Speaker 4: They might seem like an afterthought, but those little dots are called frits, f-r-i-t.
• 22:45
Speaker 4: I used to know a frit, I did too.
• 22:46
Speaker 4: These tiny dots, they heat up quicker than the rest of the windshield.
• 22:52
Speaker 4: By heating it up first, the frits help prevent the windshield from fogging up.
• 22:57
Speaker 4: I did not know that.
• 22:58
  Speaker 1: I didn't know that, yeah.
• 23:00
Speaker 4: So it keeps your view clear.
• 23:01
Speaker 4: It's especially important when you're on the road.
• 23:03
Speaker 4: The frit also helps reduce optical distortion.
• 23:07
  Speaker 4: Didn't know that.
• 23:08
Speaker 4: That means the straight lines you see through the glass won't appear curved or warped, which can happen without those little dots on there Optical illusions.
• 23:17
Speaker 4: So, in short, these seemingly simple black spots on the windshield can play a crucial role in improving safety and comfort while traveling.
• 23:24
Speaker 4: Although many drivers may not have realized the importance, you can now appreciate the small detail in automotive engineering the little black dots, the little black dots, the fritz Fritz.
• 23:36
Speaker 4: Hey, is it F-R-I-T-Z Sort of like?
• 23:38
