Transcript
- 0:00My father answered the door. He'd been dead for
- 0:0419 years. He looked at the package in my hands
- 0:08and smiled. We've been waiting for you, Oliver.
- 0:14Behind him, people gathered on a closed coffin.
- 0:19Above it stood my photograph. I should have run.
- 0:25Instead, I looked at my delivery scanner. The
- 0:30recipient's name was mine. It was my final delivery
- 0:34that evening. A small parcel, no company logo
- 0:38signature required. The address belonged to a
- 0:41funeral home on a road I had driven along hundreds
- 0:44of times. I didn't remember seeing the building
- 0:47before, but it was raining hard and I wanted
- 0:51to finish. Now my father stood beneath his porch
- 0:59light, wearing the brown suit we had buried him
- 1:01in. His tie was crooked. My mother had straightened
- 1:07it before they closed the coffin. I remember
- 1:11that. I remember being nine years old and standing
- 1:15on a chair to kiss his forehead. Oliver, he stepped
- 1:22aside, come out of the rain. Inside, I recognized
- 1:31my grandmother, my uncle Lichard, woman who used
- 1:40to live next door. All dead. At the front, beside
- 1:48my coffin, sat my younger brother. He was still
- 1:52six. I was 32. I asked my father what this was.
- 1:59His smile faded a little. A delivery. Just finish
- 2:07your delivery. My scanner vibrated. Recipient
- 2:14signature required. I held it out to him. He
- 2:18folded his hands behind his back. Your name is
- 2:23on the parcel. The recipient has to sign. The
- 2:29label was damp. My date of birth. Much smaller
- 2:42letters. Release to family. I backed toward the
- 2:48door. Every face turned with me. My brother swung
- 3:02his feet above the carpet. He was holding the
- 3:05little red car that had disappeared with him
- 3:07in the accident. I had spent years wondering
- 3:11where it went. I could see the scratch across
- 3:15its roof. It made that scratch pushing it beneath
- 3:19my bedroom door. Come and sit with me. My phone
- 3:25rang. Then her voice filled my ear. My mother
- 3:49asked if I could collect a prescription tomorrow.
- 3:56She stopped speaking. Then she asked me to repeat
- 4:00the address. There was a scraping sound on her
- 4:07head as though she had stood up too quick. Don't
- 4:22sign your name. My father extended his hand because
- 4:47your brother came to my door the night after
- 4:49we buried him. Even the rain seemed farther away.
- 4:59He said he had asked her to sign a school permission
- 5:01slip. He said there was a trip and she noticed
- 5:14the teacher's name.
