- 0:04Good morning, this is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:09weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:12ahead across the city. Today we pause to honor
- 0:16Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a reminder that progress
- 0:19doesn't always roar. Sometimes it shows up quietly
- 0:23through service, kindness, and simply showing
- 0:25up for one another. As you move through your
- 0:28Monday, Take a moment to lead with grace in your
- 0:31neighborhood, your work, and your community.
- 0:35I'm Carol. It's Monday, January 19, 2026. Let's
- 0:40get you caught up on what's happening around
- 0:42Sacramento. An update to Friday's shooting at
- 0:46a Taco Bell in Elk Grove. Police say the suspect,
- 0:51a 17 -year -old, was arrested and booked into
- 0:54juvenile hall. The circumstances leading up to
- 0:56this shooting remain under investigation. And
- 0:59on Saturday, three Sacramento residents in their
- 1:0330s were arrested after officers caught them
- 1:05with stolen mail, a stolen vehicle, and illegal
- 1:09mailbox keys. Police say mail theft typically
- 1:12increases around tax season as sensitive paperwork
- 1:15moves through the postal system. Authorities
- 1:18warn stolen mail can quickly lead to identity
- 1:21theft and fraud and are urging residents to check
- 1:24their mail daily to help deter these crimes.
- 1:29Police made two significant arrests over the
- 1:32weekend following separate incidents involving
- 1:34firearms. First, a pursuit in the Central Command
- 1:38near Sheldon Street and Ivy Street. Officers
- 1:41attempted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation.
- 1:44The driver refused to yield, leading officers
- 1:48on a pursuit. Both the driver and the passenger
- 1:51bailed out and ran. The driver was quickly detained
- 1:54and the passenger was located and arrested with
- 1:57the help of police drone. Officers recovered
- 2:01two handguns and a large quantity of narcotics.
- 2:04Both suspects were arrested on related charges.
- 2:07And earlier, a DUI crash in the 600 block of
- 2:119th Street. Officers responded to reports of
- 2:14a man slumped over the wheel after crashing into
- 2:16a mailbox and a guardrail. During the investigation,
- 2:20police discovered an illegally possessed loaded
- 2:22firearm and the suspect, a convicted felon, was
- 2:27arrested on DUI and firearms -related charges.
- 2:30In City Watch, the Sacramento County Juvenile

- 3:00or by email. And before we move on, on a personal
- 3:06note, I want to say this is not a paid advertisement,
- 3:09just a personal note. When our family lost our
- 3:13dog, Koefran stepped in with such care and quiet
- 3:18compassion. They handled his ashes with dignity
- 3:21and the memorabilia they returned to us was thoughtful
- 3:25and beautifully done. In a moment that felt overwhelming,
- 3:30Koefran made the process gentle and gave our family
- 3:34real peace of mind. If you ever face that kind
- 3:38of loss, and I want you to know that Kofran is
- 3:43the name you can trust. If you need them, I've
- 3:47included Koefran’s information in the show notes.
- 3:51Today in weather, we are going to warm up to
- 3:56highs in the 50s, near 59. And tonight we'll
- 4:01have patchy fog again, developing before midnight.
- 4:04And otherwise, it's going to be partly cloudy
- 4:08and lows in the 40s. In events, this morning,
- 4:14honor Dr. Martin Luther King at the March for
- 4:17a Dream at the Sacramento City College. Walk
- 4:20with someone from a different background, spark
- 4:22a meaningful talk, King Talk, and help build
- 4:26real bridges of understanding. It starts with
- 4:30three words, walk with me. It's free and open
- 4:33to all. The walk begins at 8 a .m. And after
