- 0:00Hey there and welcome back. I'm Dr. Hartung and
- 0:02you're listening to the Family Chiropractic Center
- 0:04podcast. Today we're talking about something
- 0:06that affects so many people right here in Robinson
- 0:09Township and really everywhere. Back pain. Specifically,
- 0:13how you can prevent it with some simple habits
- 0:15you can start today. No fancy equipment, no complicated
- 0:19programs, just practical stuff that actually
- 0:21works. Now, here's the thing. Most back pain
- 0:25doesn't come out of nowhere. It builds up over
- 0:27time. Little things we do every single day or
- 0:31don't do add up. And the good news is that works
- 0:34in both directions. Small daily habits can either
- 0:37lead to pain or they can protect you from it.
- 0:40So, let's talk about how to tip that balance
- 0:43in your favor. First, let's talk about movement.
- 0:46You know what I hear a lot in my office? People
- 0:48say, I sit at a desk all day and my back is killing
- 0:52me by three in the afternoon. And honestly, that
- 0:55makes complete sense. Our bodies were not designed
- 0:59to stay still for hours at a time. When you sit
- 1:02for long periods, the muscles in your back get
- 1:05fatigued, the discs in your spine are under more
- 1:08pressure, and your posture starts to suffer.
- 1:11Here's what I want you to do. Set a timer on
- 1:14your phone for every 30 minutes. When it goes
- 1:16off, stand up, take 10 steps, stretch your arms
- 1:19up, roll your shoulders back. That's it. 30 seconds
- 1:22is enough to reset your body and take the pressure
- 1:25off your spine. Do that consistently, and you
- 1:28will feel a difference. Second, let's talk about
- 1:31how you're sleeping. A lot of people don't think
- 1:33about this one, but you spend roughly a third
- 1:36of your life in bed, so it matters a lot. Sleeping
- 1:39on your stomach is tough on your lower back and
- 1:41your neck. It forces your spine into an unnatural
- 1:44position for hours. If you're a stomach sleeper,
- 1:48try transitioning to your side. Put a pillow
- 1:50between your knees to keep your hips aligned.
- 1:53If you prefer sleeping on your back, a pillow
- 1:55under your knees can take a lot of tension off
- 1:57your lower spine. These small adjustments while
- 2:00you sleep can make a huge difference in how you
- 2:03feel when you wake up. Third, and this one is
- 2:06huge, let's talk about core strength. Now, I
- 2:09don't mean doing hundreds of sit ups. Actually,
- 2:12traditional sit ups can put a lot of stress on
- 2:14your lower back. What I mean is gentle, intentional
- 2:17strengthening of the muscles that support your
- 2:19spine. Things like bridges where you lie on your
- 2:22back, bend your knees, and lift your hips off
- 2:24the floor. Or bird dogs where you're on all fours
- 2:27and you extend one arm and the opposite leg.
- 2:29These movements build stability around your spine
- 2:32without overloading it. Even five to ten minutes
- 2:34a day of these kinds of exercises makes a real
- 2:37difference over time. What can you start doing
- 2:40today? Pick just one of these three things. Maybe
- 2:43it's setting that movement timer. Maybe it's
- 2:45grabbing a pillow to put between your knees tonight.
- 2:48Maybe it's trying three sets of bridges after
- 2:50dinner. Just one. Build from there. Consistency
- 2:53beats perfection every single time. And here's
- 2:56one I'd encourage you to come see us. If you're
- 2:59already dealing with back pain that's been hanging
- 3:01around for more than a week or two, don't just
- 3:03hope it goes away. That's your body telling you
- 3:05something needs attention. Even if you're not
- 3:08in pain, getting a spinal evaluation is a great
- 3:11way to catch small problems before they become
- 3:13big ones. We see patients all across Robinson
- 3:16Township and we would love to help you feel your
- 3:20best. Thank you so much for tuning in today.
- 3:22I really appreciate you spending a few minutes
