- 0:14Speaker 1: Indian Stories by George B. Grinnell, Chapter nineteen, The Rolling Rock. Once,
- 0:22Speaker 1: when old man was traveling about and felt tired, he
- 0:25Speaker 1: sat down on a rock to rest. After he was rested,
- 0:28Speaker 1: he started on his way, and because the sun was hot,
- 0:31Speaker 1: he threw his robe over the rock and said to
- 0:33Speaker 1: it here, I give you my robe because you are
- 0:37Speaker 1: poor and have let me rest on you keep it always.
- 0:40Speaker 1: He had not gone far when it began to rain,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and meeting a coyote, he said to him, little brother,
- 0:47Speaker 1: run back to that rock and ask him to lend
- 0:49Speaker 1: me his robe. We will cover ourselves with it and
- 0:51Speaker 1: keep dry. The coyote ran back to the rock, but
- 0:55Speaker 1: presently returned without the robe. Where is the robe, asked
- 0:59Speaker 1: old man? Why? Said the coyote the rock said that
- 1:03Speaker 1: you had given him the robe and he was going
- 1:05Speaker 1: to keep it. This made old man angry, and he
- 1:08Speaker 1: went back to the rock and snatched the robe off it,
- 1:11Speaker 1: saying I was only going to borrow this robe until
- 1:14Speaker 1: the rain was over. But now that you have acted
- 1:16Speaker 1: so mean about it, I will keep it. You don't
- 1:18Speaker 1: need a robe anyhow. You have been out in the
- 1:21Speaker 1: rain and snow all your life, and it will not
- 1:23Speaker 1: hurt you to live so always. When he had said this,
- 1:27Speaker 1: he put the robe about his shoulders, and with the
- 1:29Speaker 1: coyote he went off into a ravine and they sat
- 1:32Speaker 1: down there. The rain was falling, and they covered themselves
- 1:35Speaker 1: with the robe and were warm and dry. Pretty soon
- 1:39Speaker 1: they heard a loud, rumbling noise, and old Man said
- 1:42Speaker 1: to the coyote, little brother, go up on the hill
- 1:45Speaker 1: and see what that noise is. The coyote went off,
- 1:48Speaker 1: but presently he came back, running as hard as he could, saying, run, run,
- 1:52Speaker 1: the big rock is coming. They both started and ran
- 1:56Speaker 1: away as fast as they could. The coyote tried to
- 1:59Speaker 1: creep into a badger hole, but it was too small
- 2:01Speaker 1: for him, and he stuck fast, and before he could
- 2:04Speaker 1: get out, the rock rolled over him and crushed his hips.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Old man was frightened, and as he ran, he threw
- 2:10Speaker 1: away his robe and everything that he had on so
- 2:12Speaker 1: that he might run faster. The rock was gaining on
- 2:15Speaker 1: him all the time. Not far away on the prairie,
- 2:18Speaker 1: a band of buffalo bulls were feeding, and old Man
- 2:21Speaker 1: cried out to them, saying, oh, my brothers, help me,
- 2:24Speaker 1: help me stop that rock. The bulls ran and tried
- 2:27Speaker 1: to stop it, butting against it, but it crushed their heads.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Some deer and antelope tried to help old man, but
- 2:33Speaker 1: they too were killed. Other animals came to help him,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but could not stop the rock. It was now close
- 2:39Speaker 1: to old Man, so close that it began to hit
- 2:41Speaker 1: his heels. He was just going to give up when
- 2:44Speaker 1: he saw circling over his head a flock of night hawks.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Oh my little brothers, he cried, help me, I am
- 2:50Speaker 1: almost dead. The bull bats flew down, one after another
- 2:54Speaker 1: against the rock, and every time one of them hid it,
- 2:57Speaker 1: he chipped off a piece. And at last one hid
- 3:00Speaker 1: it fair in the middle and broke it into two pieces.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Then old man was glad. He went to where there
- 3:07Speaker 1: was a nest of night hawks and pulled their mouths
- 3:09Speaker 1: out wide and pinched off their bills to make them
- 3:12Speaker 1: pretty and queer looking. That is the reason they look
- 3:15Speaker 1: so to day. End of chapter nineteen, The Rolling Rock
