- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. In the 600th year of Noah's life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: in the second month, the 17th day of the month,
- 0:08Speaker 1: the same day were all the fountains of the great
- 0:11Speaker 1: deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Genesis 7, 11. Dear Lord, give me the resolve to
- 0:22Speaker 1: stand for what is right in a world that is
- 0:25Speaker 1: tempted to do wrong. Give me ears to hear your
- 0:29Speaker 1: instructions on how I'm supposed to build my life, my family,
- 0:34Speaker 1: my business, and my relationships. Like Noah, I will build
- 0:40Speaker 1: to the specifications that you've given me. I will not
- 0:45Speaker 1: live a carbon copy when you've called me to build
- 0:48Speaker 1: my life in originality. As I build on your promises,
- 0:54Speaker 1: thank you in advance that when the storms come, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: will be protected and safe until you place me on
- 1:01Speaker 1: dry ground in my new promised land. Through the life
- 1:07Speaker 1: of Noah, I am choosing to rest on the fact
- 1:11Speaker 1: that even though evil abounds, I know that the promises
- 1:15Speaker 1: of God still prevail. Therefore, I will not be afraid
- 1:20Speaker 1: to stand for righteousness and to be different from the crowd.
- 1:25Speaker 1: For I know that that it is my difference that
- 1:28Speaker 1: creates my rewards. Thank you for protection and for always
- 1:34Speaker 1: guiding me to safety. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 1:40Speaker 1: for praying with us today. Continue your time with God
- 1:44Speaker 1: by listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Noah and the Ark Before this story, we were told
- 2:01Speaker 2: the story of humanity's first bloodshed, Cain and Abel. Cain's
- 2:07Speaker 2: hatred for God and jealousy of his brother led to
- 2:10Speaker 2: the brutal murder of Abel. But evil did not stop
- 2:14Speaker 2: with Cain. Evil continued its reign over the hearts of man. God,
- 2:19Speaker 2: for the good of humanity, now has a plan for
- 2:23Speaker 2: purification and redemption. Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:32Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. As we begin today's story,
- 2:37Speaker 3: we find that since Cain was cursed to wander the earth,
- 2:40Speaker 3: humankind has multiplied, spreading out across the earth as God
- 2:44Speaker 3: had intended. But something else is also growing, evil. It
- 2:49Speaker 3: is a theme that's repeated throughout the Old Testament. Evil
- 2:53Speaker 3: is reigning in the hearts of man. And that is
- 2:56Speaker 3: not at all what God wants. Each new generation is
- 2:59Speaker 3: growing more and more evil. Sin is spreading like wildfire
- 3:04Speaker 3: until finally God has had enough. He cannot ignore the
- 3:07Speaker 3: depravity any longer. God is grieved at what has become
- 3:12Speaker 3: of humanity. He is ready to wipe mankind off the
- 3:15Speaker 3: face of the earth. With a great flood, he's going
- 3:17Speaker 3: to wash the earth clean of evil humanity. But there
- 3:21Speaker 3: is one man who is different. Noah, we're told, was
- 3:25Speaker 3: righteous in God's eyes. It must have been extremely challenging
- 3:30Speaker 3: for Noah to live a righteous life in the midst
- 3:32Speaker 3: of such rampant evil. Like Noah, you may often feel
- 3:36Speaker 3: surrounded by evil in our world today, and like Noah,
- 3:40Speaker 3: you must stand apart from those living to satisfy their
- 3:43Speaker 3: own desires. As you listen today, think about how Noah
- 3:47Speaker 3: and his family must have felt building this giant ark.
- 3:51Speaker 3: They'd never before even seen rain or experienced a flood.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Think about the immense amount of faith that's required. Imagine
- 3:58Speaker 3: the fear in their hearts as they enter the ark
- 4:00Speaker 3: and watch God close the door. But then watch as
- 4:04Speaker 3: God carries them through the flood, protecting them from all
- 4:07Speaker 3: harm and providing for them every step of the way.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the story about a man, an ark,
- 4:15Speaker 3: a great flood, and God's plan of redemption for a
- 4:18Speaker 3: world filled with evil.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Mankind multiplied. With more people filling the earth, more opportunities
- 4:30Speaker 2: for evil abounded. Sons and daughters of Cain established corrupt kingdoms.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Men treated women as property, and the twisted hearts of
- 4:41Speaker 2: people cast the world into darkness. Even the lives of
- 4:45Speaker 2: people began to shorten, and humans were dying earlier and earlier.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Mighty men of old would steal away women, rape them.
- 4:55Speaker 2: These things God would not ignore. The actions of people
- 5:00Speaker 2: at this time reflected a broken and corrupt heart. God
- 5:05Speaker 2: saw this wickedness and regretted greatly the state of humanity.
- 5:10Speaker 2: In sorrow he said, I will blot out man whom
- 5:14Speaker 2: I have created from the face of the land. Yet
- 5:18Speaker 2: out of this twisted generation there was one man named Noah,
- 5:23Speaker 2: who was righteous in God's eyes. God said to Noah,
- 5:28Speaker 2: I have determined to make an end of all flesh,
- 5:31Speaker 2: for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold,
- 5:36Speaker 2: I will destroy.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Them with the earth.
- 5:39Speaker 2: The wrath of God would descend in the form of rain,
- 5:43Speaker 2: and water from beneath the earth would come after. This
- 5:47Speaker 2: was God's punishment. The flood was coming. God instructed Noah
- 5:53Speaker 2: and his sons to build an ark, a mighty vessel
- 5:57Speaker 2: that would preserve him, his wife, his sons, and their
- 6:01Speaker 2: wives from the coming storm. Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and Japheth, built the ark exactly as God had instructed.
- 6:11Speaker 2: He also instructed Noah that he should bring every animal
- 6:16Speaker 2: with them in pairs and keep them alive in the ark.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Even now God was making promises to redeem the world.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Noah fearfully and obediently followed every instruction that God gave him.
- 6:30Speaker 2: When the time had come for the flood to begin,
- 6:33Speaker 2: God told Noah, Go into the ark and take your
- 6:37Speaker 2: family with you. The rain will fall for forty days
- 6:41Speaker 2: and forty nights. It will destroy the land and all
- 6:45Speaker 2: those who.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Live on it.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But your family... and all the animals that come to
- 6:50Speaker 2: you will be saved. When Noah's family and all the
- 6:54Speaker 2: animals were secured in the ark, God shut the door.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Seven days later, the rain began to fall, and the
- 7:03Speaker 2: cleansing power of God opened. Water fell from the skies,
- 7:08Speaker 2: and the springs of the earth burst open violently. The
- 7:12Speaker 2: water rose, covering the mountains, and washing away all the
- 7:17Speaker 2: corrupt and evil kingdoms built by the wickedness of mankind.
- 7:22Speaker 2: God once breathed life into mankind, and now he took
- 7:27Speaker 2: their breath away. All was destroyed, all but those on
- 7:32Speaker 2: the ark. After forty days had passed, the raining ceased,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and the earth was still underwater for a hundred and
- 7:41Speaker 2: fifty days. At the end of the hundred and fifty days,
- 7:45Speaker 2: the water had receded enough for the ark to land
- 7:48Speaker 2: on the side of a mountain. After four months had passed,
- 7:52Speaker 2: Noah opened a window and sent out a raven to
- 7:55Speaker 2: find dry land, but the raven never returned. Noah then
- 8:00Speaker 2: sent out a dove to seek out dry land, and
- 8:03Speaker 2: it returned because there was no dry land for it
- 8:06Speaker 2: to perch on. Seven days later he sent the dove
- 8:10Speaker 2: out again, and it came back with an olive leaf,
- 8:14Speaker 2: meaning that the dove had found dry land and came back.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Noah waited another seven days and sent the dove out again,
- 8:22Speaker 2: hopeful that it would not return, meaning the land was
- 8:25Speaker 2: ready to live on. This time it didn't return, so
- 8:29Speaker 2: Noah knew that the water was not covering the earth anymore.
- 8:34Speaker 2: After a month had passed, Noah opened the door and
- 8:37Speaker 2: saw that the land was dry. God beckoned Noah to
- 8:41Speaker 2: come out of the ark. So Noah brought his family
- 8:45Speaker 2: and the animals out of the ark and offered a
- 8:48Speaker 2: sacrifice to the Lord, just as Abel did before them.
- 8:52Speaker 2: God was pleased to receive their offering and vowed to
- 8:56Speaker 2: never flood the earth again. So God gave Noah permission
- 9:00Speaker 2: to eat animals and plants so they might multiply the
- 9:04Speaker 2: earth again. With the newness of life, God put a
- 9:08Speaker 2: rainbow in the sky as a symbol of his promises.
- 9:12Speaker 2: The story of evil does not end here, but the
- 9:15Speaker 2: story of God and his passion to preserve and protect
- 9:19Speaker 2: those he loves is still unfolding. Evil abounds, but the
- 9:24Speaker 2: promises of God prevail still.
- 9:28Speaker 3: As the story of Noah begins, we get a picture
- 9:31Speaker 3: of just how bad things can and do get when
- 9:34Speaker 3: mankind follows only their own heart. Just four chapters removed
- 9:39Speaker 3: from when everything was perfect in the Garden of Eden,
- 9:42Speaker 3: the world is in disarray, death, violence, abuse. God simply cannot,
- 9:49Speaker 3: will not allow evil to go unchecked. He will not
- 9:53Speaker 3: stand idly by and watch the world he created be
- 9:56Speaker 3: destroyed by sinful men. There had to be a reckoning,
- 10:01Speaker 3: a judgment, and we see here in today's story what
- 10:04Speaker 3: God's righteous, holy anger can do. The truth is, we're
- 10:09Speaker 3: all deserving of such a flood of judgment for the
- 10:12Speaker 3: evil and sin in our own hearts. But God is
- 10:15Speaker 3: full of mercy and compassion. And here in the story
- 10:18Speaker 3: of Noah, we see that he is making a way
- 10:21Speaker 3: for his ultimate plan of redemption to be carried out.
- 10:25Speaker 3: We are not told much about Noah other than the
- 10:28Speaker 3: most important thing, that he was walking in a right
- 10:31Speaker 3: relationship with God. He was not perfect. He was also
- 10:36Speaker 3: touched by the sin nature passed down from Adam, but
- 10:39Speaker 3: he was righteous in the sight of God, righteous in
- 10:43Speaker 3: God's eyes. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament says,
- 10:47Speaker 3: tells us that it was Noah's faith in God that
- 10:49Speaker 3: made him righteous. He took God at his word even
- 10:52Speaker 3: when he had never seen what God told him was coming.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Look at how God delivers the news to Noah. First
- 10:59Speaker 3: the bad, then the good. Genesis 6, verses 17 through 19.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Now behold, I myself am bringing the flood of water
- 11:08Speaker 3: upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which there
- 11:12Speaker 3: is the breath of life from under heaven. Everything that
- 11:14Speaker 3: is on the earth shall perish. But I will establish
- 11:18Speaker 3: my covenant with you, and you shall enter the ark, you,
- 11:22Speaker 3: your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall
- 11:30Speaker 3: bring two of every kind into the ark to keep
- 11:33Speaker 3: them alive with you. God made a covenant, a promise
- 11:37Speaker 3: with Noah. He and his family would be safe, along
- 11:41Speaker 3: with the animals that were on the ark. And through
- 11:44Speaker 3: Noah's family, God was going to save a remnant of
- 11:47Speaker 3: humanity to start afresh and even the animal world as well.
- 11:52Speaker 3: But first came the flood. For 40 days it rained.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Waters rose and destroyed every person not on the ark,
- 12:00Speaker 3: just as God had said. But it wasn't over. Noah
- 12:03Speaker 3: and his family stayed on the ark for a full year.
- 12:08Speaker 3: God provided rescue for Noah and his family during the
- 12:11Speaker 3: flood and provision far after the flood. Isn't that the
- 12:15Speaker 3: way we see it in our lives as well? God
- 12:18Speaker 3: is with us during the storm and through the storm.
- 12:21Speaker 3: He stays with us, providing for our every need through
- 12:24Speaker 3: the aftermath of the storm. When it was finally safe
- 12:28Speaker 3: to step outside, what did Noah do? He offered a
- 12:31Speaker 3: sacrifice to God, worshiping him, thanking him for his protection,
- 12:36Speaker 3: his presence, his provision, and his mercy and grace. And
- 12:41Speaker 3: God gave Noah a beautiful sign of his covenant. a
- 12:44Speaker 3: rainbow in the sky. The story of Noah is a
- 12:48Speaker 3: powerful reminder that God, even in his anger, loves his
- 12:52Speaker 3: children and offers salvation and new life to those who
- 12:56Speaker 3: put their faith and trust in him. This was a
- 12:59Speaker 3: fresh start, but sadly not the end of sin and evil.
- 13:03Speaker 3: That would take a much bigger act, a sacrifice only
- 13:06Speaker 3: God himself can offer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 13:11Speaker 3: this story that shows the consuming power of your righteousness
- 13:15Speaker 3: and justice for sin. Thank you also for what it
- 13:18Speaker 3: shows us about your loving heart to save those who
- 13:22Speaker 3: trust in you. Help us, as Noah did, to have
- 13:25Speaker 3: faith in you through Jesus Christ and follow you wherever
- 13:30Speaker 3: you lead. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's Bible
