- 0:00Job chapter 8 first, let's pray dear heavenly Father, please
- 0:05open our ears to let us hear what you have to say in the name
- 0:09of Jesus, Amen. So this is Job's Job just spoke
- 0:16in Chapter 7. And now the second one of his
- 0:19friends, the shoe height replies Bildad.
- 0:25And he is, you know, one of three friends who came.
- 0:29We were introduced to them in Chapter 2.
- 0:33And their purpose was to come and sit with Job and empathize
- 0:39with him and support him and encourage him.
- 0:42That was their original goal. We know that Eliphaz, his first
- 0:47thing was he had some dream with some like Dark shadowy thing
- 0:52that whispered to him, and then he started speaking accusational
- 0:56things to Job. Now let's see what the next
- 0:59friend says. Then build it.
- 1:02The shoe height replied. How long will you say such
- 1:05things? Your words are a blustering
- 1:07wind. Well, he didn't get too far, and
- 1:11then he's telling Job that his words are a blustering wind.
- 1:16Doesn't sound very positive towards Job.
- 1:20Then it goes on. Does God pervert justice?
- 1:24Does the Almighty pervert what is right?
- 1:27When your children sinned against him, he gave them over
- 1:31to the penalty of their sin. Do you think Job needed to hear
- 1:35that he. In the earlier chapters we
- 1:38learned that a huge like a a strong ruah, which also means
- 1:49spirit. It doesn't necessarily mean a
- 1:51Tempest wind, but it refers to ruah, which is the same word for
- 1:57the Holy Spirit too. But this strong spirit destroyed
- 2:02the House of Job's children. And we know that Job from
- 2:07chapter one that God allowed Satan and maybe had some helpers
- 2:13to do things to Job. So anyway, his friend quote
- 2:19friend is saying, hey, when your children sin against them, he
- 2:22gave them over to the penalty of their sin.
- 2:24That's verse four. Well, he has no idea that the
- 2:30children sinned or anything. How does he know?
- 2:33He's assuming here and he's accusing them of sinning and
- 2:37saying they all got killed. Now Job is suffering.
- 2:41Do you think he wants to be suffering and then also hear
- 2:45that, well, your kids just got wiped out because they were
- 2:48sinning? And I don't, I don't think he
- 2:51really wants to hear that right now or that he needs to hear
- 2:54that. And that's not really a support
- 2:56thing. It's probably, again, the enemy
- 2:59influencing his mind. Or maybe, you know, it's just
- 3:02his own thoughts. But in this whole context of the
- 3:07book of Job, we know that God allowed evil to influence people
- 3:13here and to come against him and his friends initially sent to be
- 3:19supportive, and this is not supportive.
- 3:22So what is happening here? So then he says, but if you, I
- 3:27mean, it's probably his ignorance, like he just doesn't
- 3:31know. But still, even though he
- 3:33doesn't know, why remind job when he is in intense suffering.
- 3:38I mean, you could kind of maybe just keep silent on that for a
- 3:42moment and not say anything about his children while he's
- 3:46going through what he is. Does he need one more thing on
- 3:48top of everything else? So it goes back to verse 5, but
- 3:56it But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the
- 4:00Almighty, if you are pure and upright even now, he will rouse
- 4:05himself on your behalf and restore you to your prosperous
- 4:09state. Well, he kind of said what was
- 4:12true because God does just does restore Job's life.
- 4:19He doesn't know that. I mean, God does have a history
- 4:22of restoration when people turn to him.
- 4:25But here's the other part of the ignorance of Bildad.
- 4:28He doesn't, He doesn't know that God was telling Satan Job is a
- 4:32righteous man. Have you paid attention to Job?
- 4:35Job's a righteous man. So when Bildad saying if you are
- 4:40pure and upright, that's not applicable to Job.
- 4:44So he he kind of tells half truth.
- 4:47He speaks in ignorance and he does say like God would restore
- 4:52you to your prosperous state. That part's true.
- 4:55And then he says you verse 7, your beginnings will seem
- 4:59humble. So prosperous will your future
- 5:02be well, we know later that ends up being true and that's just
- 5:05the way God is. Verse 8, Ask the former
- 5:09generation and find out what their ancestors learned.
- 5:13For we were we were born only yesterday and know nothing.
- 5:18So he's he is kind of, you know, reflecting that, you know, maybe
- 5:22we are ignorant, but he's saying based on history.
- 5:26So he's trying to do his best. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but
- 5:30this is just what's coming to his mind.
- 5:32He's just not not thinking about what he's speaking.
- 5:36So for we were born only yesterday and know nothing.
- 5:40And our days on earth are but a shadow.
- 5:44So life is life is short, like a shadow comes and it goes.
- 5:50Life is short or we're in darkness.
- 5:53We don't quite understand everything.
- 5:56Will they not instruct you and tell you?
- 6:00Will they not bring forth words from their understanding?
- 6:04So I guess just about history. Look at history.
- 6:07Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh?
- 6:11Can reeds thrive without water? While still growing and uncut,
- 6:18they wither more quickly than grass.
- 6:21Such is the destiny of all who forget God.
- 6:26So perishes the hope of the godless.
- 6:31What they trust in is fragile. What they rely on is a spider's
- 6:36web. They lean on the web, but it
- 6:39gives way. They cling to it, but it does
- 6:42not hold. So those who forget God perish.
- 6:47I mean, that is true, but Job hasn't forgotten God.
- 6:53So he's, he's not speaking accurately.
- 6:56He's, he's just like, I guess he's trying to figure out what's
- 6:59going on with Job, but he doesn't know.
- 7:02He doesn't know the details. And I guess that's something we
- 7:05can all learn is we don't always know the details, the spiritual
- 7:10details of what's happening in a person's life.
- 7:13We can see the the physical and character indications of what's
- 7:23going on, but we don't really know what's going on in
- 7:26someone's thoughts, in their minds.
- 7:28The only one who knows that is God.
- 7:32So and then it looks like he's giving, He's implying that Job
- 7:38is trusting on something like a spider's web that gives away.
- 7:41He's not trusting in God. But this is, again, it's a lot
- 7:45of this seems like it's just his ignorance.
- 7:47He thinks he's a lot smarter than he is.
- 7:51They are like a well watered plant in the sunshine, spreading
- 7:55its shoots over the garden. It entwines its roots around a
- 8:00pile of rocks and looks for a place among the stones.
- 8:04But when it is torn from its spot, that place disowns it and
- 8:09says, I never saw you. Surely its life Withers away and
- 8:15from the soil other plants grow. That's kind of an interesting
- 8:22statement there and I don't want to, you know, read into it, but
- 8:28let's see. There is something it says like
- 8:30a quote, I never saw you and that let's see, or surely all
- 8:36the joy. I don't know.
- 8:39I needed to look that one up and I really didn't look that up
- 8:42before, but it just reminded me of what Jesus was saying.
- 8:45Like I never knew you and but I don't think that's necessarily
- 8:50relevant. It's talking about something
- 8:52being rooted. I mean, this is kind of like the
- 8:55parable, the seed and the sower and the plant that falls on
- 9:00rocky soil, but then it's uprooted.
- 9:03Like that is truth, but it's not applicable in this circumstance.
- 9:07So I'm not going to get into that analogy because that
- 9:10analogy is probably true, but it's just not applicable.
- 9:13So he's, he's throwing out things that he knows from
- 9:16history, but it's not applicable to Job.
- 9:20And that's where he's getting it wrong.
- 9:23Surely God, God does not reject one who is blameless.
- 9:28That is true, but it's faulty because God said in chapter one
- 9:35that Job is righteous, that he is.
- 9:37He's pretty much blameless, so surely God does not reject one
- 9:43who is blameless or strengthen the hands of evil doers.
- 9:47Now that's kind of false because while God doesn't necessarily
- 9:51strengthen the hands of evil doers, he allows them to do evil
- 9:57in order to accomplish His will. Just like he let the Babylonians
- 10:04conquer his people and take them into slavery because of their
- 10:10idolatry. So he turned them over to what
- 10:13they were seeking, but they didn't.
- 10:15And they, he knew they wouldn't like it, but they didn't like
- 10:18it. But the whole point was to have
- 10:20them turn back to him to say, hey, I don't like this, I don't
- 10:22want this anymore. And then they come back to God.
- 10:25I mean, ultimately he's trying, God is trying to restore
- 10:28relationships with people. So verse 21, he he will yet fill
- 10:35your mouth with laughter and your lips with shout of joy.
- 10:39Your enemies will be clothed in shame and the tense of the
- 10:42wicked will be no more. Now that's all true.
- 10:46So it's hard when I get looking the verses in the book of Job.
- 10:51It's hard to say like what words you can rely on and what you
- 10:56can't, but you have to definitely read all of this in
- 11:00context and know who is saying this and because what they're
- 11:06saying is true, it's just the application of it is not correct
- 11:10in this. So I'll read what the study
- 11:13Bible says about it, and then we'll wrap this up.
- 11:16OK. Why ask questions with obvious
- 11:19answers? Use correctly.
- 11:21A rhetorical question can be an effective communication tool.
- 11:26Bildad, however, use these questions to viciously undercut
- 11:31what little remaining hope Job might have had that he would
- 11:36receive encouragement from his quote friends.
- 11:40Far from sympathizing with Job, Bildad attacked him for daring
- 11:46to express his complaints to God.
- 11:50Since God did restore Job eventually, were Bildad's ideas
- 11:55correct? Bildad referred to a pleasant
- 11:58future as motivation for Job to repent of the secret evils that
- 12:04Bildad Bildad believed must have been present in Job's life.
- 12:09Although he was correct about God blessing Job eventually, he
- 12:14was wrong about the core reason for Job's suffering.
- 12:18Neither Bildad nor any of the other friends understood that
- 12:23God can be glorified by the faithful suffering of innocent
- 12:26believers. So that's that's an interesting
- 12:31statement in the study Bible. God can be glorified by that.
- 12:37I don't think God wants anyone to suffer, but there's there is
- 12:42often a purpose behind it that we don't quite understand.
- 12:46I think is a more accurate way of saying that when God restores
- 12:51glory and praise is brought to them.
- 12:54Just like the blind man who was blind from birth and his parents
- 12:57did not sin. And then Jesus healed him and
- 13:01the disciples were saying, well, the disciples were almost like
- 13:04this Bildad guy. And they're saying to Jesus,
- 13:07like what happened here? Was it his parents that sinned?
- 13:10And he and God and Jesus was like, no, it's, it was, it was
- 13:15this way so that God would be glorified so that the power of
- 13:20God, the healing, the restoration would be seen by
- 13:24others and would have a positive impact on many people.
- 13:29So God can use can use that suffering.
- 13:32This that's how he would use the suffering as the glory of God in
- 13:36the restoration, not in, you know, looking at somebody, I
- 13:41mean, who, you know, how would somebody like glorify, see God
- 13:47as glorious if they see every single person that is a child of
- 13:51God suffering? I mean, that doesn't make sense.
- 13:54No one would want to be close to God if they see that every
- 13:59single person of Gods is suffering.
- 14:02And some people do, Many people do.
- 14:06And God does have promises of restoration for those who
- 14:12suffer. I guess we all suffer to various
- 14:15degrees, but even evil people suffer because of evil.
- 14:21So none of us on this earth get away without suffering.
- 14:24Some suffering is more intense for some people than others, and
- 14:30we don't know why. But just like in John chapter 3,
- 14:38Jesus is having a conversation with Nicodemus, and Nicodemus is
- 14:43called, I mean, Jesus calls him Israel's teacher.
- 14:48So he's talking about Jesus and Nicodemus are talking about
- 14:52being born of the Spirit, receiving the Holy Spirit.
- 14:56And Nicodemus is confused by this.
- 14:59He doesn't understand the spiritual aspect and he's like,
- 15:02how can this be? This is John chapter 3, verse 9.
- 15:06How can this be? Nicodemus asked.
- 15:10And then verse 10, you are Israel's teacher, said Jesus,
- 15:16and do you not understand these things?
- 15:20So somebody who's teaching Israel did not understand the
- 15:25Spirit, the Holy Spirit. So then Jesus says very truly, I
- 15:30tell you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we
- 15:35have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.
- 15:42I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe.
- 15:48How then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?
- 15:55So how can Jesus talk to Nicodemus, Israel's teacher, a
- 16:01smart man, but he's not understanding the earthly
- 16:04things. He's not accepting the testimony
- 16:09of Jesus and his disciples, I presume.
- 16:14And then he's saying Jesus is saying to Nicodemus, you don't
- 16:18even accept that. How are you going to accept if I
- 16:22speak of heavenly things? Well, the heavenly things are
- 16:24the spiritual things because he does he doesn't understand about
- 16:29the Holy Spirit and receiving the Holy Spirit and being born
- 16:32of the Spirit. He doesn't get it.
- 16:35So that that's kind of true today, like a lot of people,
- 16:39they don't understand and none of us do.
- 16:42None of us have the whole understanding of the spiritual
- 16:45realm other than, you know, we can see from the Bible that it
- 16:49truly exists and interacts very greatly with the earth here,
- 16:54with people on the earth. And God's adversaries are
- 16:59spiritual. So anyway, we see that, you
- 17:05know, Israel's great teacher didn't quite get it, didn't
- 17:09understand the spiritual aspect, just like Bildad didn't quite
- 17:13get it, just like his apostles didn't.
- 17:16Disciples didn't quite get it when the blind man was healed.
- 17:20They thought the blind man sinned and that's why he was
- 17:23blind. But Jesus said no, it was for
- 17:26the glory of God. So here again, we don't see the
- 17:33outcome yet because we're early on in the chapters about this
- 17:37interaction, but we're seeing that Job's friends are their.
- 17:41Their intention was one thing, but as soon as they get there,
- 17:45they're not giving him any help. They're not giving him any
- 17:47encouragement. They're just accusing him.
- 17:50One of them was influenced by spiritual that Eliphez because
- 17:53he talked about this dream and this form that visit him and
- 17:56spoke to him. So that was definitely something
- 17:59spiritual. Bildad, I think is just speaking
- 18:01out of ignorance. So 1 spoke out of a spiritual
- 18:04deception. The next one spoke out of
- 18:06ignorance. And I guess that's something
- 18:09that we can learn from. This is when we, when someone is
- 18:12going through suffering, we may not know the reason behind it
- 18:18and it could be spiritual and we could be ignorant of what God is
- 18:24doing. But the Bible does, you know,
- 18:28like, I guess that anybody who is suffering should first look
- 18:33to see like, is there anything in my life that I need to change
- 18:38that's not right with God that God would not be pleased with?
- 18:41I mean, that would be the first thing that the Bible tells us to
- 18:45do. Because I think a lot of this
- 18:47advice that his friends are giving is accurate is true, but
- 18:53it's just not applicable. So they're assuming that Job is
- 18:59sinful and has the secrets that he's hiding from everybody.
- 19:02But he's it's not secrets that he's hiding from anybody.
- 19:05He's not doing anything wrong. And he's probably even more
- 19:08frustrated with his friends knowing that he hasn't done
- 19:12anything wrong and his own friends not even believing him.
- 19:17And they're accusing him of doing something wrong and him
- 19:22being the cause of his suffering, which he is not.
- 19:26And so I think we could all learn from that that we've, you
- 19:32know, maybe more questions than you know, assuming things of
- 19:37people is appropriate when we go to help someone.
- 19:43So let's see, let's see what what do the godless trust in
- 19:47that is fragile. The word for godless here means
- 19:50something like hypocrite, one who hopes in false pretensions
- 19:55are superficial appearances depends on what is unreliable
- 19:59and temporary like a spider's web.
- 20:01Well, that's what the study Bible says.
- 20:04I'm thinking like anything other than God.
- 20:06If you're putting your trust in anything, another person, power,
- 20:13a group of people, a government, whatever, you're putting your
- 20:16trust in, anything that is other than God is something that can
- 20:21easily fall. If you're putting your trust in
- 20:25your financial security, that can easily be taken away
- 20:30depending on a lot of different things could happen, a lot of
- 20:34unexpected things could happen. And so the one place where we
- 20:39need to put our trust and our hope and know that God will
- 20:42provide is God. Because that is one person who
- 20:47does not fail, who keeps his promises.
- 20:50It's he's the only person that we can trust.
- 20:54Well, the Godhead, I would say Father, Son and Holy Spirit
- 20:58only. That's it, that's it, that's all
- 21:02we can trust. Everybody else has moments of
- 21:06weakness. Not to say that everybody is
- 21:08untrustworthy, but we're all human and humans are subject to
- 21:14sin and can and will and do fail people.
- 21:20So don't put your trust in humans.
- 21:23We wish people were perfect, but we're not perfect, so how can we
- 21:26expect others to be perfect? But God is perfect, so we can.
- 21:32That's the one person that we can trust in.
- 21:36So did Bildad really believe that the blameless never suffer
- 21:41and evil doers never succeed? Bildad articulated the
- 21:46conventional wisdom of the day. His rather simplistic view must
- 21:51have added to Job's already intense pain.
- 21:54Job and his friends did not know what we know from chapters 1 and
- 21:582. Bad things do happen to good
- 22:01people. In fact, it is Job's experience,
- 22:04recounted through the inspiration of the Spirit, that
- 22:08helps us to see things from this different perspective.
- 22:12And that concludes chapter 8. So if you are not subscribed,
- 22:16please do so. If you found this beneficial,
- 22:19please share this with other people and next time we will
- 22:22cover Job Chapter 9. Thank you.
