- 0:00Good afternoon and welcome in Miller and Condon on the air
- 0:03with you here on a Tuesday as we talk the world of sports.
- 0:08Taking you up till 2:00 here this afternoon off the bench
- 0:11when Sean and Lucas will take you home until 5:00 here today
- 0:15and then overtime Iowa from 5:00 until 6:00.
- 0:18Coming up today on the program. We have Nick Marvitz back with
- 0:22us once again, though sadly not in studio with us.
- 0:25He is back in his stomping grounds and if you're watching
- 0:29us, you can help also see Nick in that background that he has.
- 0:32So we got Nick aboard with us here today in for Ken.
- 0:35The next couple of days he's going to be hanging out with our
- 0:37number one, our number 2. We'll shift the conversation
- 0:40over, talk some Hawkeyes. That's coming up at 1:00 as
- 0:43Elliot Clough is going to join us from hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 0:46We'll talk all things Hawkeyes with Elliot coming up here to
- 0:50kick off the one O clock hour. And then we're going to talk a
- 0:52little Minnesota sports after the wild fall to the hands of
- 0:57the Avalanche last night. Now down three one in that
- 1:00series. We'll talk some T wolves as they
- 1:01get ready for Game 5 coming up tonight and a whole lot more
- 1:04coming up with Dame Mazzutani here at about 1:25.
- 1:07Nick Marvitz with us here today. Nick, good to see you.
- 1:10What is the good word? I don't know if Nick can hear
- 1:16me. Oh, no, we're struggling already
- 1:19with technical difficulties, Nick.
- 1:21We'll, we'll get things figured out here and, and get everything
- 1:24up and running on that front because I don't think that Nick
- 1:27can can hear me at this point. And that is a problem when
- 1:31you're doing things. So we'll figure things out on
- 1:33that front. Let's try it again.
- 1:35Let's see if if Nick has us and if he can hear what we're
- 1:39talking about right now. Nick, do you have me?
- 1:43No, he does not. Nick does not.
- 1:44Happy. All right, so we're still
- 1:46figuring out a few of the technical issues that we're
- 1:49going through at this point in time.
- 1:50We'll see if that's able to help at all.
- 1:53There we go. And there we go.
- 1:55Nick Bervitz, what's up? What's going on?
- 1:58It's good to be able to hear you.
- 1:59Yes, yes, that definitely helps. Yeah, you hear me talking for
- 2:01the 1st 2 minutes, we'll see my lips moving but not able to hear
- 2:04me talking. So now we are ready to go.
- 2:07Well Nick, a lot to get into here today.
- 2:10You're going to hang out with the first hour.
- 2:12You know, one thing I wanted to talk to you a little bit and
- 2:14we're going to get into this a little bit later on is some best
- 2:17case, worst case scenarios for both Iowa and Iowa State.
- 2:20Going through. Obviously the two needle movers
- 2:22here today with Iowa State and Iowa football and basketball,
- 2:26both basketball programs certainly with a lot of momentum
- 2:29going into next season. Football programs that
- 2:32completely different avenues. Iowa though, they invested in
- 2:35the portal, they wait young and well with a lot of FCS players.
- 2:38Obviously, the overturned roster for Iowa State going to do that
- 2:42a whole lot coming up here in segment #2 but busy night in
- 2:46sports last night and disappointing for me.
- 2:48My Wild go down, a disappointing end to things for them as they
- 2:52fall at the hands of the launch last night. 22 I, I felt like
- 2:56they had a shot AT-32. It just collapsed very quickly.
- 2:5952 The final in that one. And now it's not over because
- 3:02you have to win four to move on, but it feels like it's over.
- 3:05I just cannot envision a scenario where the Wild are
- 3:08winning three straight against this Colorado outfit.
- 3:11Yeah, I, I, the Wild just haven't looked like the better
- 3:13team in my opinion. You never know, you know, when
- 3:15the score is tied like that and, and there's still time left in
- 3:18the game. It's definitely possible.
- 3:19But if, if you know, if they grab that game, things play out
- 3:22differently. They didn't.
- 3:23I don't love their odds the rest of the way, but you can never
- 3:26count A-Team completely out because like you said, you got
- 3:29to win 4. Got to win 43, including two on
- 3:32the road. Does not feel very viable on
- 3:35that front. We got another a big game coming
- 3:37up for Speaking of Minnesota sports with the Timberwolves
- 3:39tonight at the Spurs. Talk about that a little bit
- 3:42later on. But Speaking of the NBA last
- 3:44night, I'll be honest, the Cavs Piston series, I just can't get
- 3:47into it. I don't know what it is, but it
- 3:50was a compelling game. It was close going into the
- 3:52fourth quarter. It's what you want, but it's
- 3:54just time in a time out for whatever reason.
- 3:57I know some of the players. Obviously the the growth that
- 4:00we've seen out of Kate Cunningham and becoming an MVP
- 4:02candidate this season, even with the injury that he had, James
- 4:06Harden on the other side along with Mitchell.
- 4:07There's names that you know, I don't know, maybe it's the
- 4:10jersey on the front, something like that.
- 4:11I have not been enamored at all about that series.
- 4:14But the good news is, I mean, I was able to lock and load for
- 4:17last night, watching the Lakers at least give a tussle in their
- 4:20matchup last evening and made it compelling, made it close in the
- 4:24end, had an opportunity to win a four point play that a
- 4:27three-point play. Lakers are going to do this.
- 4:29Lebron's going to find a way. Alas, it doesn't happen as
- 4:31they're swept out by the Thunder.
- 4:33It's funny that you're more intrigued by the four O sweep of
- 4:38the Lakers Thunder than the now 2 two series between the Cavs
- 4:41and the Pistons. Yeah, the biggest question with
- 4:43the Lakers now is Le Bron and what do they do moving forward.
- 4:47But I am, I am kind of keeping an eye on this Pistons Cavs
- 4:50series. This could be a fun one as we
- 4:52get down the stretch here. Yes, absolutely.
- 4:54And we look forward to what the next series is going to be,
- 4:56regardless if it's Minnesota or if it's San Antonio and that
- 4:59next one, hopefully somebody will be able to push the Thunder
- 5:02a little bit. I just, I don't enjoy watching
- 5:04the Thunder play. I'm not a Lakers fan at all.
- 5:07I enjoy watching LeBron. I enjoy greatness.
- 5:09And certainly a guy that's old that gets me going now as I get
- 5:12older and older, like to cling out of those old guys a little
- 5:15bit more. But you know, Nick, watching
- 5:16LeBron last night got it going again during that big stretch,
- 5:20that huge third quarter that the Lakers had.
- 5:23But more than anything, it was I when they took the lead, the
- 5:26Lakers late in that game, I actually did a fist bump.
- 5:28I actually pumped the fist. Yeah.
- 5:30Yeah. I don't like the Lakers.
- 5:32I just don't like the Thunder. I hate the way that they play
- 5:37Chet Holgrim forever reason. I know he's a Minnesota.
- 5:40He annoys the crap out of me. There's just something about
- 5:42that squad. It's debating the jumping into
- 5:45defenders, the how are you supposed to play defense against
- 5:48these guys? SGA is at the forefront
- 5:50definitely of that conversation, but he's not alone on that
- 5:52squad. That is the reason, one of the
- 5:54main reasons I just don't enjoy watching the Thunder play
- 5:57basketball. Yeah.
- 5:59I mean, that's fair. It's, it's a different style of
- 6:01game, you know, now than it was 10, even 20 years ago.
- 6:06SGA definitely gets the brunt of that kind of with with his head
- 6:10bobbing and and getting calls and he definitely, I think he
- 6:14gets a lot of calls he shouldn't.
- 6:15I don't think I'm in a minority in thinking that, but I do want
- 6:18to circle back to LeBron in this series.
- 6:21Now it's only four games, but when 27/23/19 and 24, that is
- 6:26ridiculous at his age especially.
- 6:28And then as we kind of call into question his future, I don't
- 6:31think it's about whether or not he can play.
- 6:33It's about whether or not he wants to play, which is kind of
- 6:36exciting. Now back to the Thunder.
- 6:38We'll see if somebody can actually figure out how to
- 6:40dissect them and, and push them as we go towards, you know, the
- 6:43Finals. But I I have my eyes on LeBron
- 6:47with that whole situation. And you wonder for LeBron where
- 6:51it's going to end up if the Lakers making the decision.
- 6:55It's going to be Lucas team. It is Lucas team.
- 6:57Let's be honest. Obviously the injury derailed
- 6:59things this season as he was out there and hollering at the refs
- 7:01at the end of the game. Love to see Luca with a little
- 7:03passion over there on the sidelines.
- 7:05But you're handcuffed by LeBron and the salary that he commands.
- 7:09And even though he is an incredibly good player and an
- 7:11impactful player, that goes along with it is you look at the
- 7:15future of the Lakers organization.
- 7:16Obviously it's not with LeBron James.
- 7:18And where are the landing spots? Where are places that make
- 7:21sense? Because I, I want to start right
- 7:23here with you, Nick. I do not believe that this was
- 7:25going to be it, that Lebron's career is going to come to an
- 7:28end in that game swept out of the playoffs.
- 7:31And there's still, I think, plenty of good basketball left
- 7:34in the tank for LeBron James. And I don't envision that this
- 7:37is the way that it's going to call.
- 7:38So that's, that's where I start right there.
- 7:40I'm sure there's going to be headlines.
- 7:41I'm sure there's going to be tons of conversation that
- 7:44happens overall about the way that this is going to look in
- 7:47the way that it's going to play out.
- 7:48But I don't think this is it for LeBron.
- 7:50I think there's more basketball in front of him.
- 7:53Agreed. I think if they took this series
- 7:55to maybe seven games and it was really close, like it'd be a
- 7:58different conversation, but getting swept, I just it I'm not
- 8:02saying LeBron has to win a title in his last year, but I just
- 8:05don't see him going out in that way.
- 8:08And maybe he goes down a route of, you know, a little bit more
- 8:10load management and even more is kind of crazy, but gets to play
- 8:14a whole Nother season, maybe less games, less minutes per
- 8:17game, whatever it is. I don't know for sure what that
- 8:19looks like at his age. It's kind of not necessarily
- 8:21unprecedented, but the production that he's had 20,
- 8:25almost 21 points this season at 41 years old is just crazy.
- 8:29So I do think he'll play again. I don't know if it'll be in the
- 8:32same capacity that we're used to.
- 8:34And I agree, I don't, I hesitate to say it'll be with the Lakers.
- 8:37Where would you like to see, you know, if, if money weren't an
- 8:40object, if if he could play anywhere in the entire NBA,
- 8:45would you want to see him back on the Cavs or is it somewhere
- 8:47else? The Cleveland part potentially I
- 8:51I think I could, yeah, wax poetically a little bit going
- 8:54back home where it all started, finishing the career there.
- 8:58I could buy that. I don't even know what that
- 9:00obviously looks like in terms of the way the construction of that
- 9:03team. You know how he plays with
- 9:04Donovan Mitchell. If James Harden.
- 9:06I don't think James Harden's going to be back in Cleveland
- 9:08certainly next season. So I don't think that's going to
- 9:10be a big problem. But the construction of that
- 9:12roster and what they got Mobley, who just leaves you wanting
- 9:17more. It feels like time in a time out
- 9:18with Evan Mobley, really good defender, but feels like there
- 9:21should be more there. Jared Allen in the middle.
- 9:24I did watch a little bit last night.
- 9:25I'm like Jared Allen, That guy's got to be like 35.
- 9:28He's 28. And just the NBA guys, they seem
- 9:30like they're with us so long because they come out as
- 9:32freshman or come out after a year or two at college and and
- 9:34they're around for a really long time.
- 9:36The construction that makes, I think a lot of sense.
- 9:38And another thing that I've seen bandied about a ton is him going
- 9:42with Steph and finishing out their careers potentially
- 9:45together with the Warriors. How good is that team, though?
- 9:48How good is that a team that sneaks into the top six with a
- 9:52healthy season for both of LeBron and Steph?
- 9:55Is there more there? I don't know that that feels in
- 9:58a way. I don't want to say it's dirty
- 10:00or anything like like that. I just, I don't love seeing 2
- 10:03old guys working together at the end.
- 10:05I just don't think the upside is there with the Warriors.
- 10:08I think it kind of comes down to the conversation of like, if you
- 10:11put Giannis on the worst team in the NCAA tournament, could they
- 10:14win a title? It's like kind of where I'm at
- 10:16with LeBron. Like could LeBron join the
- 10:19Warriors and and push that team to the next level?
- 10:22I don't have the answer to that question, but to kind of
- 10:24reiterate your point, it feels like if the Warriors were to add
- 10:28LeBron and it was Steph and LeBron, it's like they're
- 10:31stretching out the glory days almost a little too far.
- 10:33To me, it feels like they're grasping at straws, trying to
- 10:36get back to that 2016 era when it was Cavs and Warriors over
- 10:41and over. And those, you know, big stars
- 10:43like LeBron and Steph, we're going at it on opposite sides of
- 10:46the court. It just feels to me like
- 10:48probably not the best play for the Warriors, and it would be
- 10:51more of a marketing stunt, A publicity kind of deal.
- 10:54I don't, you know, I watched a lot of Warriors growing up.
- 10:57We talked about was my NBA team. I just watched good basketball.
- 11:00So a lot of Warriors, I don't know if I'd love that for their
- 11:03image, but it would be really cool.
- 11:04Sell a lot of tickets. Absolutely it would.
- 11:06Speaking of selling tickets. So they didn't have a problem
- 11:08with that. The Knicks, another team on that
- 11:11list. Now, financially, he'd likely
- 11:13have to take the minimum if that plays out.
- 11:15But we remember the courting going back to free agency back
- 11:19in 2010. He called New York his favorite
- 11:21city. You got that component to it,
- 11:22obviously the Mecca of basketball playing in the
- 11:25Garden, Garden. It felt like a different times,
- 11:27a couple of different times that maybe New York was going to be
- 11:30the final destination for LeBron and that never played out.
- 11:33But with him in New York, and certainly this year as this team
- 11:36is flying high, they're playing great basketball.
- 11:39But if they can't get over the hump, they can't get to the
- 11:41Finals, say they get knocked off by the Pistons or the Cavs in
- 11:45the next round or even get there and get blown out by say, the
- 11:48Thunder. One final piece, a piece of
- 11:50LeBron James going to New York City, I think that would be a
- 11:53great culmination of his career. And something that, I mean, you
- 11:57want to ingrain yourself in New Yorkers, it's been a 50 year
- 12:00drought between an NBA championship for the Knicks.
- 12:03That's definitely one. And talk about putting a kind of
- 12:05a cherry on top of the sundae of a career.
- 12:08The Knicks and LeBron, even with the minimum salary that he'd
- 12:11have to take, he's going to make play more off the floor.
- 12:14I think that makes a ton of sense.
- 12:16Yeah, I think wherever he ends up going, it'll be one of those
- 12:18pay cut kind of situations, if I had to guess, but a situation
- 12:23that maybe he wouldn't maybe where he could actually make a
- 12:25lot of money on the floor. What if you went to Memphis,
- 12:28right with all the comments and he's like, I'm going to bring
- 12:31this city back to prominence. I'm going to fix the hotel
- 12:34situation. They're willing to pay a pretty
- 12:36penny to get him on the on the program around.
- 12:40That'd be fun, huh? I'm not going to hold my breath
- 12:43on that one. That one after Lebron's
- 12:45comments, yes, it would be nice, but it's not going to happen.
- 12:49That is done. The the Thunder move on one,
- 12:5115110, the final in that one, the Thunder await the winner of
- 12:56the Spurs and Timberwolves series.
- 12:58Well, we mentioned a couple of the big topics at the top, but
- 13:02want to go a little Cyclones with you here today.
- 13:04As it was announced earlier this morning, the 9 new players
- 13:08coming in to Bill Fennelly's program with Iowa State women's
- 13:11basketball here at the top. Nick, so you host the daily
- 13:14podcast Locked on Cyclones and as mentioned, we're going to
- 13:17talk some more Cyclones football and basketball coming up here.
- 13:19But other woman's basketball front.
- 13:21A lot of expectations coming into the year.
- 13:24People said maybe on paper this had a chance to be Bill Fenleys
- 13:27best team. Injuries definitely a problem
- 13:30throughout the course of the season.
- 13:31We saw that play out, but there was just some Gump grumblings
- 13:35even when they're playing some of their better basketball
- 13:37during the non conference. Maybe it wasn't quite what was
- 13:40expected out of this group. And then the way the wheels fell
- 13:43off and culminating getting bounced pretty easily in the
- 13:45first round of the NCAA tournament, not even making it
- 13:48to the round of 32. What kind of traction a do you
- 13:51get on Iowa State and and did you feel the angst from the
- 13:54women's basketball program throughout the course of the
- 13:56season? Yeah, it just never really felt
- 13:59like it got put together. I believe it was the Kansas game
- 14:03that I was watching where they had the last second bucket from
- 14:05the corner. I believe it was Kenzie Hair, if
- 14:07I remember correctly, when it felt like there was a little bit
- 14:10of life to him, but the rest of the way, it just never really
- 14:14felt complete. Is that the best word?
- 14:16I'm not sure. And then obviously with the
- 14:18massive departure this offseason, there was a lot of
- 14:21question marks on literally what is going on.
- 14:24It was kind of the biggest, nobody even really was able to
- 14:26pinpoint any sort of gripe or was it money?
- 14:32No one really knew. And so it it it does feel good
- 14:34to have at least a roster at this point.
- 14:37And we'll see kind of how each individual player it takes on
- 14:41their role and, and what kind of contributions they'll bring.
- 14:44But the biggest thing that I'm looking at here with this whole
- 14:47situation is that now Bill Fenley was able to build his
- 14:50roster the way that he saw fit. And I, I saw this kind of quote
- 14:55or, or at least idea floating around with Audie Crooks when
- 14:58she hit the portal that Audi Crooks is an unbelievable
- 15:01player, right? And every program should
- 15:04probably at least see what that looks like for them.
- 15:07But Audi Crooks is the piece. It's not a piece.
- 15:11Audi Crooks is the piece. You build your entire offense
- 15:13and defense around Audi Crooks. I think with this kind of a
- 15:18roster, obviously the biggest thing is without Audi Crooks,
- 15:21you can have a lot more even contribution across the entire
- 15:24team. You don't have to rely on one
- 15:26single player. Not that that was a bad
- 15:27situation for Iowa State. It's just a different look now
- 15:31and I'm very intrigued about what this next season looks
- 15:33like. And we go back to just four
- 15:34years ago when they had to do something very similar.
- 15:37There were some big time players that left the program questions,
- 15:40how are they going to be able to do that?
- 15:41And they made a run into the second round of the tournament,
- 15:43had Stanford on the ropes, the number one seed in the NCAA
- 15:47tournament, going back to Audies and Addie Brown's freshman
- 15:50campaign. And just how he was able to put
- 15:52it together here. 9 newbies, though, I guess the headliners,
- 15:55probably Maya Bobbitt out of Kent State, at least in terms of
- 15:58scoring. But the transition, that's one
- 16:00thing. We've seen Bill Findley do this
- 16:02before. And it's kind of like some of
- 16:03the conversations we've had with Jimmy Rogers on the football
- 16:06front after what he was able to do in year #1 at Washington
- 16:09State. Bill Findley's done this before.
- 16:11And you have to believe in the coaching acumen that he had.
- 16:13Who knows what went S there? There was something that went
- 16:16sour, obviously inside the program.
- 16:18It feels, feels very, very likely that that happened.
- 16:21And there was more to it than just players that were looking
- 16:24outlook. Locker rooms can get divided,
- 16:26things can happen, Players can group together and just not like
- 16:29a coaching staff. We've seen that had plenty of
- 16:31times before. But since Bill Findley has done
- 16:34it before, I think at minimum they're going to be solid
- 16:36because Bill Findley has proven that year in and year out, he's
- 16:39going to be able to do that with basically any group of women's
- 16:42basketball. Get players that you give them.
- 16:45No, I I completely agree. That's where I feel confident in
- 16:49the program is with Bill Fenley. And there was a lot of I think
- 16:52noise is probably the best way to put it around his
- 16:54positioning. Was he going to continue?
- 16:57Was he going to retire? And then did Iowa State want to
- 17:00keep him because of if you lose a player like Audie Crooks,
- 17:03obviously that's a question a lot of people are going to ask.
- 17:06And then Jamie Pollard basically said, yeah, this guy is our guy
- 17:10kind of no matter what. There's not really much of a
- 17:12question there. And when you look at his resume
- 17:15and what he's done, it's pretty undeniable.
- 17:18Just relatively consistent getting it done with no matter
- 17:21who is on the floor. When I look through a lot of
- 17:23these names, there are some that are very exciting.
- 17:26Like you said, Maya Bobbitt, I think out of Kent State, she's
- 17:29going to be a very solid scoring option.
- 17:32But even looking at like the freshman coming in, I think this
- 17:34is going to be a solid team top to bottom.
- 17:37I don't know right now exactly what the roles are going to look
- 17:39like. All right.
- 17:40It's just it's just too early. But I trust Bill Fennelly with
- 17:44probably too much, honestly, I think he's going to get this
- 17:47team to a Big 12 contender, maybe not late in the year, but
- 17:50certainly going to be pushing some of those top teams.
- 17:52Got a couple other news and notes here to jump around on the
- 17:55local front. Miller and Condon here on the I
- 17:58Was Sports Radio Network. Nick Maravitz in for the next
- 18:00couple of days for our number one in for Ken.
- 18:03He'll be back with us on Thursday.
- 18:05Nick, want to jump to this next in the NBA draft.
- 18:08The measurables are in all right, Bennett starts.
- 18:11He's not the listed 6 foot 40. He's 6/2 and 3/4 without his
- 18:16shoes on now. I believe he'll be playing in
- 18:19the NBA with sneakers, so it should be OK.
- 18:21I think he's going to be all right there.
- 18:23But the measurements, we hear this NFL draft time all the
- 18:26time. Also, you know, guys, arms are
- 18:28just a little bit too short. The measurables, all right,
- 18:31Milan, and maybe not the wingspan that you want for for
- 18:34an outside shooter. And with that frame at 6 foot 8,
- 18:36Joshua Jefferson also there. The thing that stood out,
- 18:39though, is Machilovic shot the ball well.
- 18:41Jefferson, I thought was decent for a big guy.
- 18:44I saw a mock yesterday, a mock draft, and it's one of hundreds
- 18:47obviously that are out there that had Joshua Jefferson going
- 18:50ahead of Milan Manchilovich. If Manchilovich does stay in the
- 18:54draft, does that seem likely to you?
- 18:57You know, that's one that I've, I've kind of seen as well and
- 19:01that's what I was anticipating before this season for sure.
- 19:05Milan took a big step forward this year.
- 19:08I wouldn't be shocked by that. I think just overall play, you
- 19:12can probably trust Jefferson a little bit more.
- 19:15We'll see how his play translates to the NBAI think
- 19:18Milan's, you know, just true shooting, you know, in the NBA
- 19:21is so important. So I wouldn't be shocked if it
- 19:24went either way. But I could see Jefferson's
- 19:26defense, not that Milan doesn't play, but really gaining a lot
- 19:29of attention there on Bennett. Sturtz, I have a quick story for
- 19:32you. This is interesting 'cause I am
- 19:34from Eastern Iowa, as you, as you've talked about, I was in
- 19:37Trader Joe's not that long ago. It was maybe 2 weeks ago.
- 19:41I was checking out. You know, you gotta grab some
- 19:43flowers for the lady, grab a couple snacks.
- 19:45They got so many snacks up there.
- 19:47I'm not really focused. I'm kind of looking around.
- 19:50I look out the window. Bennett Sturtz walking in.
- 19:52I said, is that really? Is it Maybe there's glare.
- 19:55I can't. Is it?
- 19:56Oh, it is. He was not as tall as I thought
- 19:58he was gonna be. That's just something I you had
- 20:00before we noticed. I I just noticed it.
- 20:04I'm sure that's not going to be a problem in his NBA career, but
- 20:08I was shocked to see him and it was not.
- 20:10He wasn't as staggeringly tall as I guess I would have
- 20:13anticipated. When it comes to Jefferson and
- 20:15Milan, I like all of the measurables here.
- 20:18We talked a little bit about how Otzelberger measures his guys,
- 20:21and these are pretty true measurements to what I had been
- 20:23seeing all year. So I think that helps a little
- 20:26bit. But maybe that's just me being
- 20:27an Iowa State fan and giving Otzelberger too much.
- 20:29Credit six foot 8 for Milan in a six nine and a quarter wingspan.
- 20:34That was the one thing, the knock that I saw and all this
- 20:37stuff you just shake your head about.
- 20:38That was the same thing that we heard from Bennett Sturtz,
- 20:40officially 6/2 and 1/2 for him. And the wingspan at 6 foot 6
- 20:45standing reach. Like, I don't even know it.
- 20:47You're, you're the guy that's got to help us out on this
- 20:48front, Nick, because you're personal trainer.
- 20:50So you you know what these measurables mean, right?
- 20:54Oh yeah, no, I, I work with this stuff all the time now these are
- 20:58when you look at like, oh, is he tall enough?
- 20:59Is he big enough? What do we want?
- 21:01Do we want a bunch of 6 foot, you know, actually let's go 7
- 21:03foot 10 guys with a wingspan looking at around 810 feet in a
- 21:08standing reach of 15 feet. Like what are what is good
- 21:11because bigger is better, right? As long as they can move the
- 21:13same. I I don't get too caught up in
- 21:16these measurables in these numbers because I'm looking at
- 21:20play on the floor. Now, of course it has to the NBA
- 21:23is bigger. And so those numbers do matter.
- 21:25It's not like they're completely pointless, but I would rather
- 21:29look at their game, right? I would rather look at how they
- 21:31play, the pace they play with the shots that they like to
- 21:33take. And then you mentioned the
- 21:35shooting. I believe I maybe I jump in the
- 21:37gun here, but as far as Bennett starts shooting 80% in spot up,
- 21:41shooting number one in the combine and I've got him at 3
- 21:45and off the dribble. Those are the kind of things I'm
- 21:48looking at more than like is he 69 or is he 6/9 and 1/4?
- 21:52He shot the cover off the ball and we know he can do that.
- 21:57Talked to Coach McCullum last week over at the Polk County
- 22:00High Club and that's one thing. He said he's had a lot of fun,
- 22:03kind of put him through some different workouts doing things
- 22:05in a different way and that is definitely something that he has
- 22:08enjoyed at this point in time, being able to do that and get
- 22:11Bennett Stirts ready. Mock drafts since that 17 to 25
- 22:15range. I think for Bennett, Sturtz,
- 22:17Manchilovich and Jefferson, early second round, top half of
- 22:20the second round, pretty much across the board of the mocks
- 22:22that I've seen at this point. But that is something and
- 22:25Manchilovich obviously still has a decision of what he's going to
- 22:28do if it's going to be coming back to college.
- 22:30He is in the transfer portal. What is going to be there?
- 22:33You feel like you can't be Louisville, right?
- 22:35I mean that that team has spent through the absolute roof and
- 22:38raise the ceiling of everybody else.
- 22:40There was a lot of talk about Florida, but you'll look at the
- 22:42way that they have filled out their class Still, if he makes
- 22:44the decision to come back to college, there is going to be
- 22:47some program that will find the money and certainly be able to
- 22:50pay Melania, You would think handsomely, Nick.
- 22:53Yeah, it's going to come down to money, right?
- 22:55Because it's not about staying in college for the love of the
- 22:58game. I think if he was going to do
- 22:59that, he would have stayed at Iowa State.
- 23:01And I don't think there was much of a question about that.
- 23:03I saw something about he had a conversation over Zoom with
- 23:05Kentucky. I thought the phrase was if you
- 23:08beat him, join him or if you can't beat him, join him.
- 23:10I would say did beat him. So I don't know what that's
- 23:12about. And you mentioned Florida.
- 23:14That one was, I thought the front runner that that that
- 23:17program. I don't know if it's going to be
- 23:19Florida and if it's not Florida, is it anybody?
- 23:21I don't know. I thought I saw something about
- 23:23maybe May 31st or I don't remember there was a date that
- 23:25he had to decide by. So a lot of people be watching
- 23:29for that specific date. I at this point he's not on Iowa
- 23:33State and so I'm interested to see where he lands, but it's not
- 23:36really something I'm losing sleep over to be honest.
- 23:38Absolutely. Well, we're not losing sleep
- 23:40because it's the offseason, but our eyes are already starting to
- 23:44wander a little bit towards August camp for football and of
- 23:47course, the September season that'll be upon us before we
- 23:50know it. We got a great summer in front
- 23:51of us, but still we're looking ahead.
- 23:53So I want to go through Nick with you and I want to talk
- 23:56about the areas of strength, the areas of concern.
- 23:59You'll take the Cyclone side, I'll take the Hawkeye side.
- 24:01Maybe we'll push back and forth a little bit.
- 24:03We're going to do it for both football and men's basketball
- 24:05when we come back on the other side.
- 24:07How concerned or how good can both these teams be?
- 24:11We'll do that next. Nick Meredith hanging out with
- 24:13us today here, it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:16Network. 12:30 It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:20Network. Thanks for joining us wherever
- 24:22you are across the great state of Iowa and anywhere on the
- 24:24iheart app Shout out to Sioux City, IA City, Cedar Rapids,
- 24:28Quad Cities, along with our flagship one O 6.3 KX&O with us
- 24:33here today, Trent Condon joined by Nick Marvitz from Locked on
- 24:36Cyclones. Nick, we're gonna talk some
- 24:39Hawks, we're gonna talk some cyclones.
- 24:41We got a lot going on here today to mention and boy, I gave you a
- 24:45rundown of different topics to hit on today.
- 24:47We didn't get to many of them, so we got a lot more still
- 24:49coming up this hour as we'll continue to break things down
- 24:52quickly. We're able to hear the music
- 24:54coming back out of break there. A little, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:58OK, very faintly maybe again, we're working through some new
- 25:01technical things here. We're trying to figure some
- 25:03things out. I am not an engineer.
- 25:06I am not really anything other than a guy that's just kind of
- 25:09figure things out on his own throughout the years of 1/4
- 25:12century now of on the radio. So I'm trying to figure things
- 25:15out, but I think we're OK on that front.
- 25:17All right, we got the the audio side figured out there.
- 25:19We got you able to hear me at the beginning of the show.
- 25:21That was a good positive direction that we're going and
- 25:24we're going to continue here. So where I want to tackle this
- 25:27question and take it maybe in a different path than we've gone
- 25:30before, taking a look at both football and men's basketball
- 25:33for both Iowa and Iowa State, the reasons for concerns and the
- 25:36reasons that maybe you're optimistic about both sides.
- 25:39You do locked on Cyclones, I do locked on Hawkeyes.
- 25:42We talk about our programs each and every day.
- 25:45And sometimes you run out of topics, sometimes feels like
- 25:47you're repeating yourself a little bit.
- 25:49That's going to happen from time to time.
- 25:51But let's start right here with football.
- 25:53This team, as we talked about them here on the radio show
- 25:56throughout spring football, trying to figure them out what
- 25:59Jimmy Rodgers did right away and just this whole new hall.
- 26:03It is by far the most difficult local story that we've had our
- 26:08local team to preview because of the unknown.
- 26:11We've seen turnover, but we've never seen anything quite like
- 26:14this. And certainly for a football
- 26:15program, even when new coaches come in, the turnover that
- 26:19happens. We're in such a new environment.
- 26:22Start right there for me, Nick, how you've been able to tackle
- 26:24throughout spring football, going through the different
- 26:27positions, the different players with really not a whole lot of
- 26:30knowledge base that you have. Because at minimum, I remember
- 26:33that kid, he was running around and making plays on special
- 26:35teams or I had a coach say something to me about this guy
- 26:39back when he was a freshman. He showed up on campus.
- 26:41We don't have that baseline with this Iowa State football team.
- 26:44No, it is completely new. There are a few guys, Kyle
- 26:48Conradi for one, that we are familiar with, which is nice.
- 26:51But across the board, it is a brand new team and the biggest
- 26:55thing for me is a brand new coaching staff because the team
- 26:59is great. And we'll talk a little bit more
- 27:00about specifics on the roster, but I am looking at the coaching
- 27:05staff and what's that going to look like?
- 27:06Because in five years, hopefully it's the same. 678 years down
- 27:11the road, ideally it's either the same or very, very similar
- 27:14that the roster will kind of come with time.
- 27:17I don't expect this year to be the best year of Iowa State
- 27:21football of all time just because I think there was an
- 27:24element of like, oh, we have to build a whole new team.
- 27:27OK. We've got like, what, a couple
- 27:29weeks before the transfer portal?
- 27:30Not that Jimmy Rogers hadn't done it before.
- 27:32He did. But there is like, OK, we are.
- 27:35We are going right now. The hire came so quickly.
- 27:38It just all kind of came out of nowhere.
- 27:40So my, you know, how am I looking at the whole thing?
- 27:43I am watching film, you know, breaking down names.
- 27:46What did they do at previous stops?
- 27:49And one name that I wanted to bring up earlier, I think it was
- 27:52it was it last week that I was on and I didn't quite get to was
- 27:55Kaden Crawford. That name is extremely exciting
- 27:59to me. Obviously you're familiar with
- 28:00him having been at Iowa, but that one as a defensive lineman
- 28:05is exciting. Absolutely.
- 28:07Kaden Crawford was a guy that had a little bit of buzz when he
- 28:10showed up in Iowa City from Colorado, if memory serves, when
- 28:14he came in at the defensive end, went to the FCS level, played
- 28:17very well up at South Dakota. And yeah, a guy that certainly
- 28:20can be impactful. It's a name that we know and at
- 28:23minimum that's a jumping off point.
- 28:24It's the same thing, you know, with Jalen Rayner.
- 28:26It's a name we know. We saw him last year against
- 28:28Iowa State and they gave a tussle to the Cyclones in that
- 28:31match up with Arkansas State. So a name that we know what I
- 28:34look through and I go through, all right, I think at minimum
- 28:37there's a few guys he say, all right, this is going to fit the
- 28:39returning guys. Carson Willich, Drew surges, all
- 28:42right, names that we know absolutely a David Coffey, maybe
- 28:45he can be involved. Couple of guys, Rutledge and
- 28:47Barrett on the offensive line. They come back with experience.
- 28:50But this transition period, because Jimmy Rogers did it a
- 28:54year ago, I think that's the biggest calling point that you
- 28:56could say, hey, this team can at minimum flirt with Bull
- 29:00eligibility because Rogers just went through this a year ago.
- 29:03Oh yeah. I we talked about what's their
- 29:05ceiling and what's their floor? And I see a very realistic path
- 29:09to six wins. I don't think I'm off my rocker,
- 29:13you know, yelling at the cloud saying that they're going to end
- 29:15up at, you know, 9 or 10 wins. But I think 6 is very, very
- 29:19reasonable. And when you talk about
- 29:21obviously roster construction and what Jimmy Rogers did last
- 29:23year is a big point. But even more than that, getting
- 29:26buy in and creating culture and those kinds of things that are a
- 29:30lot harder to measure, that's what Jimmy Rogers did last last
- 29:34year as well because it was his first year.
- 29:35It's not like he was his third year and he lost his entire
- 29:38roster and built it all up from scratch.
- 29:40No, he came in, lost the whole roster, built it all back up and
- 29:43then built that team into a bowl eligible team.
- 29:46So I I, you know, they talk about manufacturing the
- 29:49relationships and how close the team is now.
- 29:51That's really exciting to me. We'll see how the actual players
- 29:55perform on the field, but I think players that know each
- 29:58other well and trust each other play better than just a
- 30:01hodgepodge of a bunch of talented players.
- 30:03It's kind of like the offensive line.
- 30:05You jump over next and Nick, the one question that I have is we
- 30:09go from the optimism and getting to know you now here over these
- 30:12last few months and dating back to the fall when we started to
- 30:15do a couple of podcasts together.
- 30:16You're an optimistic guy. You seem to have that optimism
- 30:19yes, you're you got that positivity.
- 30:21You're you're not an old cranky man like me.
- 30:24It'll get, you'll get there, don't worry.
- 30:25But when you look at this squad and you look at it from the
- 30:29other direction, you take the optimism hat on.
- 30:31You take the pessimistic hat and flip that on.
- 30:34What is the thing, either a position group or just overall
- 30:36with the football program that you say, oh boy, this could be a
- 30:40big problem for this year? A big problem.
- 30:43I don't know if I would go so far as to say that I have an
- 30:46area that I am, you know, terrified of.
- 30:49I think there are areas that aren't as strong is probably how
- 30:51I'll put it. Maybe that's just the optimism.
- 30:53Fibers still sitting on my head from the hat.
- 30:55I feel like on offensive line should be an area where Iowa
- 30:59State's going to be really good. It's an area that was a clear
- 31:02target in the transfer portal for Jimmy Rogers.
- 31:05They've talked so much about building from the inside out.
- 31:08I just have to see it when you bring in a bunch of guys that
- 31:11haven't worked together, it's all fine and dandy until they
- 31:15hit the field, right? And we've seen that in all sorts
- 31:17of leagues like the NFL, like, oh, these all five guys are just
- 31:20supposed to be incredible and then they don't gel.
- 31:23Or you have five guys that are like, well, this is the worst
- 31:26graded offensive line in free agency of all time.
- 31:29And then they actually play it out and they're one of the best
- 31:31teams out there. So I have some question marks, I
- 31:33would say around the offensive line and then wide receiver.
- 31:36I just don't get the feeling we're going to have a weapon a
- 31:41number one right now. Now there of course were some
- 31:44standouts at the spring showcase and that's exciting.
- 31:48We'll see how Jalen Rayner kind of throws the ball around.
- 31:51I I wasn't necessarily impressed.
- 31:54I'll be completely honest, it's a little pessimistic about his
- 31:57like they didn't really have the zip on the ball that I was
- 32:00looking for off of his arm. So I'll see how much the passing
- 32:02game is utilized for Iowa State this year.
- 32:04But the flip side of that is I think they're going to dominate
- 32:06in the run game. I think they have the running
- 32:08backs for it even without, and I think that Rainer could be used
- 32:12with his legs as well. So I would say if I had to pick
- 32:15two on the entire team, I'm staying away from the defense.
- 32:18I trust Bob it, but I would I would probably say offensive
- 32:22line and wide receiver. You know, one thing that also
- 32:26kind of jumped out and you mentioned offensive line and I
- 32:28think you'll get to know that offense line is something that I
- 32:31talk about a ton. The importance of and it doesn't
- 32:33matter the level of football, we'd be talking about Pop Warner
- 32:36all the way through to the NFL. Offensive line so often is
- 32:39overlooked, but the importance of it not just having five guys
- 32:42but building depth there. One thing that I really like and
- 32:45it's just a projection that is out there.
- 32:47Our lads has all the depth charts for all the college
- 32:50programs out there and their projections where they don't
- 32:52have their two returners back in the starting lineup, either
- 32:55Rutledge or Barrett in their starting lineup.
- 32:57But you look at the five guys that they project to be starters
- 33:00for the Iowa State offensive line this season, only one of
- 33:03them seniors. So there can be some growth that
- 33:05comes out of that. The question that I do have
- 33:08though is about that depth and what kind of depth that you can
- 33:10do when you're really just throw against the wall.
- 33:12You're looking all right, we got to get 12/14/15 offensive
- 33:16lineman to come in, not just meshing them together, them and
- 33:19building the depth because you want to get the guys that you're
- 33:22working to get the starter experience out there.
- 33:24But going along with that offensive line, I think that is
- 33:27the one because you don't know. You got guys from all over the
- 33:29place. You got guys that are coming in
- 33:31from the SEC. You got guys that are coming in
- 33:32from the D2 ranks and how you melt that all together because
- 33:35it doesn't matter if Jalen run it.
- 33:37Rainer takes a big step forward this year and that running game
- 33:40with Petaway and Olen in Flora and they're running the football
- 33:43or at least have the running backs again.
- 33:45If your offensive line stinks, your offense is going to stink.
- 33:48I agreed. It's the the biggest part of the
- 33:51entire offense. It all starts there literally
- 33:53with the center snapping the ball.
- 33:55So, you know, maybe we do have a standout wide receiver.
- 33:58Maybe Overby takes that next step and becomes the red zone
- 34:01threat that I think he can. And maybe Rayner finds the zip
- 34:04on the ball that I'm looking for.
- 34:05He's able to drop it in a bucket from 50 yards away.
- 34:08And we have the best running backs in the nation and then the
- 34:10offensive line just can't piece together and Rainer has a second
- 34:13and a half to throw and it doesn't matter over bees wide
- 34:16open down the field. That's where it all starts.
- 34:19And I I trust the defense. I think the offense is where I
- 34:22really want to see can this team get it done?
- 34:25So I'll jump over to the Hawkeye side and the reasons for me for
- 34:27optimism is just the sustainability of this program,
- 34:31what they're able to do year in and year out.
- 34:34They are one of only four programs over the last decade
- 34:37that has won eight or more games in a season.
- 34:40Full seasons taken 2020 out when Iowa went six and two that year.
- 34:43But full seasons over the last decade, the four programs that
- 34:47have done it, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, I mean, you talk
- 34:51about the company that you're keeping, that is some high level
- 34:53stuff from Iowa football. Obviously the Hawkeyes have not
- 34:56come close to the heights of those of the out of the
- 34:58programs. But the consistency, the
- 35:00baseline that you have at minimum, you know you're going
- 35:03to be solid. And that's where my optimism go
- 35:05is. But I go back, that defensive
- 35:08tackle position is scary, I thought.
- 35:10But we saw some things last year from Bryce Hawthorne, who
- 35:12transferred in from South Dakota State.
- 35:14He was part of the rotation and I thought he's going to be a
- 35:16piece. He's going to have to be a stud
- 35:18though. I mean, you talk about taking a
- 35:19leap for this year. He's going to have to be, I
- 35:22think on the fringes of being second, third team, all Big 10.
- 35:25That kind of performance goes behind them.
- 35:27You have a couple of former walk ONS of Luke Gaffney and Will
- 35:30Hubert, who are fighting for other starting spot, Bryce
- 35:33Stevenson, who they brought in from the portal.
- 35:35He was banged up during the spring.
- 35:37They got Alebaju from up in North Dakota.
- 35:40He was a guy that certainly statistically did not pop by any
- 35:43means in the middle of the defense.
- 35:46And it goes hand in hand with what we talked about with the
- 35:47offensive line with Iowa State, Iowa.
- 35:50You look back at some of those seasons where the defense is
- 35:53taking a big step backwards. That's normally the reason
- 35:56they're not able to clog up the middle, do the things that we
- 35:59do, occupy blockers, occupy space.
- 36:01If you can't do that, suddenly it becomes scary in a hurry.
- 36:04And that defense that is so good, and I think it'll be
- 36:06really good on the back end. I love what they have, certainly
- 36:09in their back seven. And well, yeah, the back seven
- 36:12with the two linebackers and now the five defensive backs with
- 36:15the cash position that Phil Parker employs, I think they're
- 36:17going to be good there. But if you can't do it upfront,
- 36:20A defensive tackle, suddenly this defense I think could go
- 36:23from elite back to maybe just good.
- 36:26And unless the offense takes a step forward, that's where it
- 36:28gets scary for Iowa. Yeah, the offense is I wear my
- 36:32question marks live for sure. I actually have a question for
- 36:35you because I'm sure you've looked through all the depth
- 36:38charts and the grades and watch some film and you've gone in
- 36:41depth with it. And you probably had a pretty
- 36:43good feeling on where Iowa was going to be prior to say last
- 36:47week. Was the All Access Spring
- 36:50showcase a big, you know, did it, did it change how you feel
- 36:53about this team? And watching all the coaches and
- 36:57all the interviews and all of the, there wasn't a ton of
- 37:00necessarily like drills, but I thought that was kind of cool.
- 37:03I mean, as an Iowa State fan, I hesitate to say that, but man,
- 37:06that was some cool access. I.
- 37:08Loved hearing and seeing Kirk really be involved in what he
- 37:12does and his old school terminology.
- 37:14You got to get the knee up in the crotch.
- 37:16I mean, I just, I just chucked chuckled at that because that's
- 37:19Kirk. He's an old football coach,
- 37:20right? But seeing him still there
- 37:22working through a drill, you know, he is not Aceo that's
- 37:25sitting up in in the corner office and just looking down to
- 37:27practice. He's still involved and still
- 37:29doing and getting the guys to do the little things.
- 37:32And I've told this story before, Nick, but I had an opportunity
- 37:35to see a little bit of a practice at a bowl game years
- 37:37and years ago. And the thing was, it was just
- 37:40so boring. I mean, just talk about it's
- 37:44defensive line. The defensive line drill is what
- 37:47I was watching at the time. And they're just sitting there
- 37:49and they're working on hand placement and then working on
- 37:51hand placement and working. This is in December and they're
- 37:55still doing the same things. Yet those little things, the
- 37:58nuances, the things that shouldn't don't matter to guys
- 38:01like us on the radio, right? Who cares?
- 38:04But they do matter actually, for football and the drilling and
- 38:07those kind of things. And that's what they drill in.
- 38:09And you saw it up close and personal with that All Access
- 38:11feature that Iowa had and seen Kirk Ferris being really
- 38:14involved in that one. I don't think it changed though,
- 38:17my perception of what this team is going to be.
- 38:20I think they're going to be solid up front, but it's a
- 38:22questions a defensive tackle in the course of the biggest
- 38:24question. What does it look like obviously
- 38:27at the quarterback position, because that is 1 coming into
- 38:30the spring after we got through winter workouts, I thought it
- 38:33was Jeremy Heklinski. There was going to be a pretty
- 38:35significant gap. And then Hank Brown, when
- 38:37Heklinski took over the backup role in the middle of the season
- 38:40last year, something that is so uncurred ference like, I
- 38:43thought, well, this thing is over.
- 38:45It's signed, sealed and delivered.
- 38:46Heklinski is going to be your starter going into it.
- 38:49I think this thing's going to come down to the wild and I will
- 38:52not be surprised one bit, not if it's a blowout game number one
- 38:55against Northern Illinois, but that we see both those
- 38:57quarterbacks play and play in the first half of the game
- 39:00against NIU to open up the season.
- 39:02I think we're going to see both Brown and Heck, Linsky, and it's
- 39:04something that's probably going to linger into Cyhawk Week,
- 39:07which we absolutely love. Any story extra storylines are
- 39:09always good. No, that's very true.
- 39:12And I only asked that question because Iowa State's done a lot
- 39:15more, not all axis, but certainly looks behind the the
- 39:18curtain, if you will, with lots of miked up and all of that.
- 39:21And I was really kind of uncertain of what to think about
- 39:24Iowa State. And then you get all of that
- 39:26kind of stuff from Roland Bobbitt.
- 39:28And I feel really good after all of that and seeing how they
- 39:31coach, how they operate out there on the field.
- 39:32So that's why I asked. But ultimately it comes down to
- 39:35for the quarterback position for Iowa, my initial kind of thought
- 39:39process has always been if you have two quarterbacks, you have
- 39:41none. Do you subscribe to that or do
- 39:43you think that they're going to push each other and end up
- 39:45better for essentially with two competent quarterbacks?
- 39:48I think it's it's the former. I think absolutely it is the old
- 39:51adage. I definitely believe in that.
- 39:52If you have two quarterbacks you have done.
- 39:54Was it Bill Parcells that said that first?
- 39:56I think it was. But regardless, absolutely, I
- 39:59subscribe to that one. Doesn't mean that one of these
- 40:01guys can't take the job and run. And I personally.
- 40:05I just like Hank Kolinsky a little bit more.
- 40:07Yeah, he's a little guy. I mean, if he's 5 foot 11 that
- 40:09I'm 6 foot and Nick, you know that I am not 6 foot tall.
- 40:12He is not tall by any means, but he's got that side to side
- 40:16movement. There's a little bit more
- 40:17shiftiness to him. I did find it interesting.
- 40:20I I saw something where Hank Brown straight ahead is actually
- 40:23faster. And it reminds me back and I'm
- 40:25going to go way back in the day and and I'm going to feel really
- 40:27old because you're going to scratch your head.
- 40:30Nate Chandler, who took over for Brad Banks.
- 40:32Actually, 40 time was faster than Brad Banks watch watch
- 40:35those guys in the football field.
- 40:36It wasn't didn't feel like it was close because of the
- 40:39shiftiness that Brad Banks had. And I'm sure you saw plenty of
- 40:41banks highlights and and don't bring up 2002 at Kinnock Stadium
- 40:45when I lost my wallet and Iowa blew a double digit lead in the
- 40:48second-half of that one. That was a bad, bad day in the
- 40:50student section there. But it's it's interesting
- 40:53because Hank Brown's definitely got the bigger arm.
- 40:55Yet that's the kind of guy that Kirk seems to gravitate towards
- 40:59and he got hit. Kilinsky, who does things a
- 41:01little bit differently, a little bit more on in our unorthodox
- 41:05going to be something that is definitely going to dominate the
- 41:07conversation when we get to August camp.
- 41:10We're due for a time out here, Nick.
- 41:11We'll come back on the other side.
- 41:13We talked about the football side of things, reason for
- 41:15optimism and maybe some pessicism.
- 41:18Let's jump over to the basketball side of things, get
- 41:20into Iowa and Iowa State. On the other side, Nick Barvitz
- 41:23from lockdown Cyclones hanging out with me.
- 41:24Trent Condon back here in a moment, it's Miller and Condon
- 41:27on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 41:28Wrapping up our number one, it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 41:31Sports Radio Network, including our flagship one O 6.3 K Thanks
- 41:35and O here in Des Moines, Nick Marvitz hanging out with me for
- 41:38our number 1 today. You know what, Nick?
- 41:40We mentioned we went through concerns, reasons for optimism
- 41:44for both Iowa and Iowa State football, let's say basketball
- 41:47for tomorrow. We'll do that when we have a
- 41:49little bit more time as we're running a little short on time
- 41:52here. So we'll save that for tomorrow.
- 41:54We will dig in a little bit deeper as Nick's going to be
- 41:56hanging out with me again tomorrow.
- 41:57Nick will be, Ken will be back. Excuse me on Thursday.
- 42:01I did want to go One Direction with you and getting to know
- 42:05you. The PGA Championship is this
- 42:07week now it's definitely the 4th of the majors.
- 42:10Are you a golf guy? I think you learned as you hang
- 42:13hung out with us during our Mediacom show inside the numbers
- 42:16last week. I like to bet on golf a whole
- 42:18lot. So is that something that you
- 42:21get into? Are you a golfer?
- 42:22Do you enjoy golf? Where do you sit as we get ready
- 42:25for the second of the four majors?
- 42:27Betting on golf is something that I, I do generally throw
- 42:31something on the Masters, but I don't know if I pay close enough
- 42:34attention to really feel confident the rest of the
- 42:36season. I mean, just, it's kind of fun
- 42:37for the Masters. But as far as playing golf, oh,
- 42:41oh, yeah, I got my clubs right over there.
- 42:44I, I spent way too much time on the golf course.
- 42:46One of my favorite pastimes. Oh.
- 42:48That's good. You got some good courses over
- 42:49there. So what are what are your
- 42:50favorite courses you like to play over?
- 42:52You're living in the Iowa City, Cedar Rapids corridor, so which
- 42:56ones jump out here? Williams.
- 42:57Guy, I say Williamsburg is a really solid course.
- 43:01I'm a big fan of them. I haven't been in this area
- 43:04during a golf season, so we're just now getting to where I
- 43:08would be able to play right. I haven't gotten out in Iowa
- 43:11City, but I'll tell you in like Boone, Ames, what is the it's,
- 43:16it's golden one. It's up in Boone.
- 43:18That one's incredible. Honey Creek, maybe that's maybe
- 43:20what it was. And then Homewood in Ames is
- 43:22just a staple. I haven't played many of the
- 43:25Ames courses. In fact, I might have to branch
- 43:27out a little bit more. But maybe we get up there.
- 43:30We got some tee times. Maybe in a horizon we'll get
- 43:32together and I'll definitely be fired.
- 43:34Speaking of golf, coming up tomorrow, Matt Rudy, long time
- 43:36writer at Golf Digest, he's going to be with us.
- 43:38We'll get the latest on the PGA Championships and get his
- 43:41thoughts on that one. One final thing before we run
- 43:44out of our it is NFL schedule time.
- 43:48The leaks are continuing, and not just the leaks, but
- 43:50announcements from the broadcast partners of what they have and
- 43:53what they're going to broadcast and some of the big windows that
- 43:56are out there. Is this a time that you get
- 43:58enamored? Do you just wait for the full
- 44:00schedule release? I know some people with a
- 44:02betting perspective. As soon as these are out and the
- 44:04DraftKings, the FanDuel of the world, they start putting some
- 44:07point spreads out. Is that something you like to
- 44:09do? It's something that you like to
- 44:10play around with. I definitely pay attention to
- 44:12the leaks, but schedule release day is like a holiday in and of
- 44:15itself. It is so much fun to see what
- 44:17the media teams come up with, so I'm looking forward to.
- 44:19That Nick Fun hanging out with you today.
- 44:21We will talk to you again tomorrow.
- 44:22Thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me on.
- 44:24Nick Marvitz, you can catch him each and every day.
- 44:27Locked on Cyclones, your daily Iowa State podcast.
- 44:31I got you covered on the Hawkeye side with Locked on Hawkeyes
- 44:33Hour 2. Coming up next, it's Midler and
- 44:35Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
