- 0:05KARA: A Switched at Birth recap podcast. [THEME MUSIC]
- 0:05KARA: I am
- 0:21deaf. I was born completely Deaf. But I did not
- 0:24start learning sign until about three or four
- 0:27years ago. So I am now proficient in sign. But
- 0:30when I first watched the show in middle school,
- 0:32I was not. But I really appreciated the Deaf
- 0:35representation at the time. And it's very cool
- 0:38now to watch the show through a new lens, now
- 0:41knowing sign and more about Deaf culture. Oh,
- 0:43yeah. And I also have cochlear implants. I have
- 0:46bilateral cochlear implants. So I have...
- 0:46DANI: Does
- 0:49that mean two? [CHUCKLES]
- 0:49KARA: I have two cochlear implants.
- 0:52DANI: No, I'm asking you for me. [LAUGHS]
- 0:52KARA: Bi-lateral means two.
- 0:57Yes, bi is two.
- 0:57DANI: Okay, thank you.
- 0:57KARA: And you're so
- 0:59smart.
- 0:59DANI: I am hearing, and I was homeschooled as
- 1:03a kid, and I took sign language classes with
- 1:06a bunch of my friends. Then when this show started
- 1:08coming out, we started watching it together every
- 1:11week. As far as sign language goes, I've never
- 1:13felt proficient.
- 1:13KARA: I would say you're proficient.
- 1:16DANI: That's so sweet of you to say. That's really
- 1:18sweet.
- 1:18KARA: The bar's in hell, but I think you're
- 1:20proficient. [BOTH LAUGH]
- 1:20DANI: But yeah, we're two best friends.
- 1:24We live in New York City now and we're going
- 1:26to revisit the show every week.
- 1:26KARA: Yeah, each episode
- 1:30is going to cover one episode of the show. And
- 1:32DANI: I can't wait to just talk about all the drama,
- 1:35but also all the Deaf culture stuff that they
- 1:38got right.
- 1:38KArA: Yeah, all the things they got right
- 1:40and all the things they got horribly wrong. [MUSIC]
