- 0:07The Cincinnati Bengals faced the Baltimore Colts at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore for a week two matchup on Sunday, September 19th, 1976.
- 0:16Cincinnati entered the 1976 season under new head coach Bill Johnson.
- 0:21The Bengals had been coached for the first eight years of the franchise's existence by the legendary Paul Brown, who led the team to the playoff three times.
- 0:28Despite finding a franchise quarterback in Ken Anderson, Brown's team never got past the first round of the postseason.
- 0:34Four days after the Bengals were eliminated from the playoffs in 1975, Brown announced that he was retiring from the game after 45 years of coaching.
- 0:42Baltimore was coached by Ted Marche-Abrota, who had led the team to the playoffs for the first time in four years in 1975.
- 0:49This audio recording is from the Cincinnati Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Samp and Jimmy Crum.
- 0:56Hi everybody and welcome to Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 1:00For game number two of this young NFL season is the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:05This is one of two games today that matches playoff teams from last year.
- 1:09These two made it. The other game is the Rams and the Vikings.
- 1:12Both were opening day winners, the Colts over the New England Patriots, and the Bengals knocked off the Denver Broncos 17-7.
- 1:19This game matches up two of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League, Kenny Anderson and Burke Jones.
- 1:25Jones is in his fourth year, Anderson of course starting his sixth.
- 1:29Stan Fritz and Archie Griffin will be the Bengals running backs once again this afternoon.
- 1:33Their counterparts will be Roosevelt Leakes and Lydell Mitchell, the former teammate of Franco Harris at Penn State, going for the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:41This is by far the finest afternoon we've ever had for a game here in Baltimore.
- 1:45It's 81 degrees and it's a shirt sleeve, sun-baked crowd here in Memorial Stadium.
- 1:50We just had the introduction of the Cincinnati Bengals defensive unit, and I might say there'll be plenty of noise this afternoon.
- 1:57Every football fan is well aware of the problem they've had here in Baltimore.
- 2:01A resignation six days before the season opened of coach Ted Marchabroda in an air play revolt led by quarterback Burke Jones,
- 2:09which along with other things prompted Marchabroda to come back.
- 2:12Well they wiped that away last week and went on to beat New England and get into the swing of this NFL season.
- 2:18I'll be back with a starting lineup after this message.
- 2:23Hi Marathon Man.
- 2:24Hi Judy, how are you and your favorite car doing?
- 2:27As a matter of fact, today's my car's birthday and I'd like to, you know, do something nice for it.
- 2:32Well I got just the thing. There's no better car gift than an oil change.
- 2:35Drain out that old stuff and fill the crankcase with Marathon Superior all season.
- 2:39Here, read for yourself.
- 2:41High viscosity and dex offers easy starting characteristics of an SAE 10W. Wow! Is that good?
- 2:50That's great. Means that with Superior the engine starts easy in winter, yet that oil has body for hot weather driving.
- 2:56And that other business there about detergent dispersant additive, means your car's engine's protected against dirt and rust and fludge.
- 3:03Really, Superior's one of the nicest things you can do for your car, even between birthdays.
- 3:08It keeps the engine clean, it cuts down engine wear, keeps the PCV valves clean.
- 3:12When's that start to happen?
- 3:14It'll give us 15 minutes.
- 3:15Change of way. I'll be right back. I'm gonna go pick out a card.
- 3:24We've had the introduction of the Bengals defensive unit, the Colts offensive unit, but of course the toss of the coin is still to take place.
- 3:31On offense, the Colts will have Bert Jones, the quarterback, Roosevelt Leakes, and Lydell Mitchell will be his running backs. Glen Dowdy and Roger Carr will be the wide receivers.
- 3:39And Raymond Chester will be the tight end.
- 3:42Then David Taylor and George Coons are the tackles. Robert Pratt and Elmer Colletter, the guards. Ken Mendenhall is the center.
- 3:49The Bengals on offense, Kenny Andersen, the quarterbacks, Dan Fritz and Archie Griffin are the running backs.
- 3:53Bill Brooks and Ike Curtis will be the wide receivers with Bob Trumpy at the tight end.
- 3:58Rufus Mays and Vern Holland will be the tackles. Shinners and Bushnock will alternate the guards. Dave Lapham is the right guard.
- 4:05And Bob Johnson is the center.
- 4:07We'll have today's kickoff in just a moment.
- 4:14You know what I could really go for right now, Barbara?
- 4:16What?
- 4:17Pizza. Let's run up to Gatsby's Pizza Palace.
- 4:19But honey, I want to see this movie. It starts in ten minutes.
- 4:23Oh yeah. I want to see that too.
- 4:25Hey, why don't you pick up a frozen pizza at Convenience? We can watch the movie while it cooks.
- 4:31Yeah, that'll be cheaper than Gatsby's too.
- 4:33At Convenience Food Mart, you can get what you want quick and easy. We really can make life a little more convenient.
- 4:39We make life a little more convenient, folks.

- 5:26dreaming, and the rocket's flying, are like the sisters, always like the sisters, and
- 5:41they're gonna make it rain, on the land of the free, land of the free.
- 6:05Most of the games in the Eastern Time Zone got underway about an hour ago.
- 6:08This is the only two o'clock starter because of the blue lie here in Baltimore
- 6:12Which they've tried to repeal numerous times but have never been able to do so
- 6:15So in the games already underway at Pittsburgh in the second quarter the Cleveland Browns lead the Pittsburgh Steelers 7-0
- 6:22Houston and Buffalo are scoreless in the second period the San Diego Chargers lead Tampa Bay 3-0 in the first quarter at Detroit
- 6:30Atlanta leads the Detroit Lions 7-0
- 6:32In the second quarter and it's Washington 10 Seattle nothing in the second period
- 6:42An update
- 6:44Houston leading Buffalo 3-0 in the second quarter and the Philadelphia Eagles now lead the New York Giants 7-0 in the second period
- 6:51This broadcast is authorized on a broadcasting rights granted by the Cincinnati Bengals solely for the entertainment of our listening audience
- 6:58Any publication rebroadcast or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the special written consent of the Cincinnati Bengals is prohibited
- 7:06The announcers in this broadcast are employed by WW radio incorporated with the approval of the Cincinnati Bengals incorporated
- 7:13The Bengals won the toss have elected to receive the Bengals will be going right the left on your radio dial
- 7:18And as we look at it here at Memorial Stadium
- 7:21The Bengals dressed in their white uniforms this afternoon the coats with their blue jerseys and white pants
- 7:26Tony Lenhart will do the kicking off and Willie Shelby and Lenville Elliott are the two deep men for the Bengals
- 7:32They were expecting a crowd of about 50,000 in Memorial Stadium and that's just about what we'll have and they'll be a noisy crew
- 7:39Remember the last time the Bengals played here there was about an eight nine ten minute delay
- 7:43At one point of the game because of the booing of the crowd and you perhaps you can hear the crescendo of noise
- 7:48beginning to swell in the background as they signal for Tony Lenhart to advance
- 7:53There's the kick and the game is underway. It's a good booth at Shelby take the yard deep in the end zone
- 7:58Comes out to the 10 to the 15
- 8:00Hits the 20 still on his feet and gets away to about the 28 yard line
- 8:03before he's dragged down on the far side of the field over there by
- 8:09Howard Stevens a little guy who returns the punch and the kickoff was the man who was in on the stop on the far side
- 8:15So the Bengals will start out at their own 28 yard line
- 8:19And it'll be first and 10
- 8:21defensively Fred Cook and John Dutton are at ends for Baltimore with Mike Barnes and Joe Erman at the tackle
- 8:28Jim Schienski is the middle linebacker, Gerald Loos and Stan White in the outside
- 8:33so Brooks and
- 8:35Curtis come to the left side
- 8:37And now Curtis goes in motion to the far side of the field. We go into the first play Anderson back to throw
- 8:42Look, gets away, now he's coming up
- 8:44Still on his feet to the 30, gets to the 35
- 8:47to the 40 yard line to the 45 will be hitting going down at the 46 yard line
- 8:52He spread him out deep and Anderson came straight up the middle and Nelson Muncie
- 8:56the cornerback on that side finally had to drag him down
- 8:59Anderson looked downfield everybody was covered and then came up the middle and Kenny who has good speed
- 9:04Made it all the way up to the 46 for an 18 yard run on the first play from Strimmy
- 9:09That last five yards he picked up he used one of his blockers very effectively
- 9:13He could have been hit back at around the 40 yard line, but he used one of his downfield men very effectively cut to the outside
- 9:19And then finally fell just before he was hit at the 46
- 9:23Another tight with Curtis out to the left side, Brits and Griffin are split in behind Anderson
- 9:28Colt six men up a quick pitch, around the outside is Griffin
- 9:31Not going to get much, maybe a yard and that's all
- 9:34And a par is out of the field as he's pulled down Gerald Loos
- 9:37The linebacker over on that side and in the stop
- 9:40Lloyd Mumford and Nelson Muncie are the cornerbacks with Jackie Wallace and Bruce Laird the safeties
- 9:46There's going to be gain of just a couple of feet on the play and that's all
- 9:50We'll call it no gain at all, it'll be a second and ten
- 9:54This front four of Baltimore led the NFL in sacks last year with 59
- 10:00And they've become a well known group
- 10:02Curtis goes far side, Brooks nearside, second and ten, Bengals at their own 46
- 10:06The cornerback's about seven yards off the line of Strimmy
- 10:09Anderson back to throw, still looking, fires down the middle
- 10:12Curtis, did he hold on to it? He did, he bobbled it but then held it as he was hit and going down
- 10:17By Lloyd Mumford at the Baltimore 45 yard line
- 10:21Curtis has done a curl down there and Anderson really drilled the ball to him
- 10:25It popped up in the air but as Curtis was falling with those great hands there he is, he managed to hold on to it
- 10:30And it's going to be very close to a ten yard gain
- 10:33From the Bengals 46 to the 44 and a half yard line of Baltimore, it'll be third down and about a half a yard to go
- 10:40Tony Davis goes in now to replace Archie Griffin on this third and short yardage situation
- 10:45The coach jams up shoulder to shoulder, the Bengals with third and perhaps a foot and a half to go for the first down
- 10:51Into the middle of the line and getting the first down
- 10:54Lunching all the way down to the 36 yard line goes Dan Prince
- 10:57Big hole opened up in the middle by Bob Johnson along with Dave Lapham
- 11:02Any other guy, Shinners or Bushnock, it was Bushnock at that particular time
- 11:07And in short yardage they made themselves about eight yards down on the Colts 36
- 11:12The Colts have won ten straight regular season games
- 11:15Their last loss was in October of last year to New England 21 to 10
- 11:20So the Bengals at the Colts call it 37, the rear of the football right there
- 11:24The slot formation left with Brooks Wyde, Curtis in the slot
- 11:28Colts jump around in defense, handoff is Pritz plunging his way into the right side
- 11:33Dan has got good yardage on it, off tackle slant right down to the 30
- 11:37Before Dutton and Herman can combine to bring him down along with Stan White the linebacker
- 11:43But Pritz got the ball all the way down to the 30, a seven yard gainer and it'll be second and three
- 11:49This is a tall front four of the Colts
- 11:52Cook is 6'4, Barnes 6'6, Herman 6'4 and Dutton at right end is the big guy
- 11:57He's 6'7, so the backs in and out of behind Anderson now
- 12:00The Bengals moving the ball, handoff to the second man Griffin
- 12:03And Archie hits the stone wall as he hits the 29, tried to sneak in over right guard
- 12:08Lloyd Mumford, the cornerback, came up quickly to administer a pretty good hit
- 12:12Also down the bottom of the stack is Dutton and Herman were both there also
- 12:17There is no gain to amount to in the play and it'll be third and three right after 30
- 12:22Two weeks ago, Herman got his clock cleaned pretty well
- 12:25He got a slight concussion in a preseason game against Detroit
- 12:28And was actually knocked unconsciously, played part of the game last week, has no recollection of it
- 12:33So it's third and three, a little long to run on the Colts to be looking fast
- 12:36Anderson back to throw, fires out and a flat is caught and dragged down at the 25 yard line
- 12:40As he goes out of bounds is Billy Brooks
- 12:43Right on him was Nelson Munsey
- 12:46But Brooks got the quick out for the first down, it'll be right about at the 25 yard line
- 12:51And needing three, the Bengals got themselves about four and a half and a half the first down
- 12:56To keep the drive alive and going
- 12:58And Kenny Anderson now is two out of two for nine yards
- 13:01It was here two years ago that Anderson hit 16 in a row to set an NFL mark
- 13:05And later was broken by Burke Jones who was his counterpart this afternoon
- 13:10Brooks nearside, Curtis fireside, backs in an eye behind Anderson
- 13:14The Bengals down near the Colts 20
- 13:16Fake draw, back to throw is Anderson, fires out and a flat, a dive, but Fritz can't hold on to it
- 13:21Down to the 20 yard line, a pass was a little bit low as Fritz was turning around
- 13:25Brooks had gone down deep on the nearside, Trumpy had gone down deep on the far side
- 13:30Curtis had hooked and come back and he threw it to Fritz out in the left flat
- 13:33But down to the 20, the pass a little bit low and Fritz dropped it
- 13:37So it'll come back to the 25 and it'll be second and ten
- 13:40Kenny Anderson, a remarkably cool individual when he drops back
- 13:42Whether he's in the pocket or has to step out of the pocket
- 13:45Remarkably cool, takes time in picking out his receivers
- 13:48He is averaging only one interception in every 33 attempts
- 13:52That's a great, great ratio
- 13:54So ready to go, again the Colts have everybody up close
- 13:57Anderson back to throw, has time, left, fires out, a flat
- 14:00It's interception, tied up to the 25 to the 30 yard line and knocked out of the 38 yard line
- 14:06Lloyd Monfort, shot in front of Billy Brooks
- 14:10Two steps down, pass off, and that in step threat, John Skinner's finally hauled him down
- 14:14Monfort was right there, circled around behind Brooks
- 14:17And picked the pass away and just as what it looked, the Bengals were on the move
- 14:21And interception ended it all
- 14:23So there's time out on the field, short Bengals, nothing, Colts, nothing
- 14:27Some Chevette owners talk about their favorite car
- 14:30Here's what Mrs. Carol Hazelwood had to say about Chevette's roominess
- 14:34We're a very tall family and we wanted a small car
- 14:37We tried many cars, including rabbits, and we couldn't fit in
- 14:41I'm 6'2 and my husband is 6'5
- 14:44Chevette's rear seat back folds down to give you 26 cubic feet of carrying space
- 14:49Mr. Kevin Nichols said
- 14:51It's bigger inside than I thought it would be
- 14:53It's everything I thought it would be
- 14:55For Chevette economy, Ms. Jane Zaito
- 14:57I was looking for a car that would save me death and that's why I chose the Chevette
- 15:0140 miles per gallon EPA highway estimate, 28 miles per gallon city
- 15:05With standard 1.4 liter engine, 4 speed manual transmission, and 3.70 axle ratio
- 15:11Actual mileage may vary
- 15:13And to wrap things up for Chevette, Mr. Raymond Andrews
- 15:16Grooming? Good gas mileage. Not a rough ride for a small car. Sorry!
- 15:22Chevette by Chevrolet. It could make you a happy owner too
- 15:27The New England Patriots
- 15:31What do you know just as we're talking about Kenny Anderson
- 15:34Averaging only one interception every 33 attempts
- 15:36That's when Lloyd Mumford comes up and makes that interception
- 15:39Second period, it's George the New England Patriots leading the Miami Dolphins 6 to nothing
- 15:43And in the second quarter, the Washington Rescue and 17, Seattle nothing
- 15:47The coast come right out of a double wing formation
- 15:50With only Leek then behind Bert Jones
- 15:52Jones fakes and goes back to throw
- 15:54Fires out in the flat, as it caught at the 42 yard line, Fritchert was right on the receiver
- 15:58It was grabbed out there by Lydell Mitchell
- 16:01Mitchell came out of the backfield off that wing formation
- 16:04This one right off on the left flat
- 16:06Jones drilled it hard, it's going to be out at the 43
- 16:09Fritchert was right there with him
- 16:13It's a 5 yard gain, and it will be second and 5
- 16:18Offensively, David Taylor and George Coons are the tackles
- 16:22Robert Crabb and Elmer Collett, the guards
- 16:24Ken Mendenhall the center, Lydell Mitchell and Roosevelt Leakes now in a split behind Bert Jones
- 16:29That's both Carr and Dowdy White
- 16:31Second and 5, a handoff into the right side, wiggling his way forward for maybe a yard or two
- 16:36And that's about all of Mitchell
- 16:38Jim LeClair, the middle linebacker, got the telling shot on him
- 16:41Dropped him at the 46th at the game
- 16:43Up about 3 yards on the play, and it will bring up a third and two for the coast
- 16:47Do you think Mitchell wasn't a busy man last year in the cold scheme of things?
- 16:52Carried 289 times for 1193 yards
- 16:55First time a cold runner had ever gone over the 1,000 yard mark
- 16:59He also had 60 pass receptions for 544 yards
- 17:02Total of 15 touchdowns rushing and passing, extremely busy
- 17:06Third and two, and McCauley goes in for Mitchell
- 17:09Handoff into the right side, fighting his way through
- 17:12Roosevelt Leakes, and I believe he had the first down as he got to about the 49 yard line
- 17:16He was squirming along, he did make it, at the 49
- 17:19They generally substitute McCauley on third down for either Lydell Mitchell or Roosevelt Leakes
- 17:26And that time he got the job done, he also went with a two tight end
- 17:29He got about three in a play, Bo Harris was the stopper on the play
- 17:32But out of the Colts' own 49 yard line, they have their first first down of the afternoon
- 17:38The Bengals were moving, in case you just joined us, only to have Mumford intercept a pass
- 17:42And bring it back out to the Colts' 38
- 17:45Now they split wide men on both sides, Bert Jones back to throw
- 17:48Then complete, he overthrew Roger Taylor on the quick out
- 17:52Roger Carr, over in the left flat
- 17:55Kenny Rowdy was over there covering, but his car did his quick out
- 17:59The ball was already zinging on by his ear, so it is second and ten
- 18:03Thus far, Taylor has gone only to the quick out pattern
- 18:08Bert Jones doing the throwing, it's the 49 now, it'll be second and ten
- 18:11Before the game got underway, about two hours before the game got underway, Jones was standing out in the field throwing some passes
- 18:16Talking with Tommy Casanova and Lamar Perry
- 18:19Certain camaraderie between these fellows off the field or before the game that doesn't exist now
- 18:23Jones fakes a handoff, back to throw, fires out in the flat
- 18:27Bo Harris after him, drags him down, but it looks as though he might get around at the Bengals' 42 yard line
- 18:33Lydell Mitchell is the man who came out of the backfield to get that ball, and he has got that great speed
- 18:38But out in the right flat, Bo Harris was over there with him and hauled him down at the Bengals' 43
- 18:43But it is again on the play of about eight yards, and they'll bring up a third and two
- 18:48They like to throw to Mitchell, he can run inside, he can run outside
- 18:52An hour down on the skin part of the infield
- 18:57They're tight on the left side, bring the wide receiver out to the right side, the back's in an eye behind Bert Jones
- 19:04Jones on a quick pitch, around to the right side, getting the first down inside D-40 to about the 38 yard line
- 19:10A Bengals' are signaling her with a fumble, and her eyes on the Bengals have recovered it
- 19:14Bo Harris is the man down at the bottom of the stack
- 19:17Howard Stevens has come in the ball game and is carrying that on that sweep around to the right
- 19:22So now the Bengals have taken over, and there's time out on the field
- 19:25Score, Bengals, nothing, called, nothing
- 19:28Service, that's a good reason, the bank is a Seabree deposit bank
- 19:31And here are just a few of the services they have to offer
- 19:34Check credit for those times and the bargain that won't wait for the budget
- 19:37It's a combination of your Seabree deposit bank checking account and MasterCharge
- 19:41Simply write a check and the Seabree deposit bank will transfer MasterCharge funds up to your MasterCharge limit to cover it
- 19:46It's like writing yourself a loan
- 19:48The Seabree deposit bank, member FDIC
- 19:51Go with the growing Seabree, go with Seabree deposit, get up and grow with the growing bank
- 20:03Big Spiner Foods has it all, both prices are convenient
- 20:08Big Spiner Foods is closed all day Sunday to give their employees a day off to spend with their families
- 20:14They're open six days a week to serve you in two convenient locations
- 20:18Highway 41 North and 1300 South Green Street in Henderson
- 20:23Enjoy today and tomorrow shop the Dick Spiner Foods way
- 20:28Big Spiner Foods has it all, both prices are convenient
- 20:33Here in Baltimore, the Bengals and Colts are scoreless elsewhere around the NFL
- 20:38The Miami Dolphins have now taken a 7-6 lead over New England
- 20:42San Diego with another field goal now leading Tampa Bay 6-0
- 20:45The New York Giants have up their lead over the Philadelphia Eagles to 10-0
- 20:50And the Cardinals lead the Green Bay Packers 3-0, all of those either first or second period scores
- 20:56Bengals starting out at their own 40, have a flat formation with Brooks and Curtis left
- 21:00And off, around the outside goes Griffin
- 21:02Starts to get around the corner, he does, but just for a couple of yards and that's all
- 21:06And if he fires out of the field, he's all down at about the 42-yard line
- 21:10Jackie Wallace and Gerald Ustah linebacker on that side along with Jim Schiuncey, the middle linebacker
- 21:15All were in at the stop and Schiuncey limping slightly as he gets to his feet
- 21:19Gavaldis at the Bengal 42 and Griffin running wide three times this afternoon
- 21:25Has picked up a total of just about three or four yards and that's all
- 21:28It'll be second and eight
- 21:30The Colts strictly a zone team against the pass
- 21:33They rely on that front four and drop everybody else back as a rule
- 21:39Widemen are split both ways
- 21:41They loop and Anderson back to throw
- 21:43Over the head of Brooks on the far side of the field, the flag is down
- 21:49And let's see
- 21:51Anderson figured that Brooks would be right over near the sideline
- 21:54But he was about six or eight yards away from
- 21:56Let's see if they had some obstruction on Brooks as he went out
- 21:59Now it's a legal procedure against the Bengals
- 22:03That will cost the Bengals five unless the Colts decline it
- 22:07In which case it would bring up a third and eight or it'll be second and 13
- 22:11There's no score here of this ballgame
- 22:13The Bengals not a good drive after taking the opening kickoff
- 22:16Only to have Mumford's interception ended
- 22:18And the Colts first offensive series ended with a fumble by Stevens
- 22:23And it's declined so at the 42 now it becomes third and eight
- 22:27And this is the situation of course that our defensive line loves
- 22:30Because they can just lay their ears back and come on in there
- 22:37Free safety Jackie Wallace intercepted three passes last week in the ballgame against New England
- 22:43Cornerbacks will be off the line of scrimmage this time
- 22:49Now the Bengals have three wide receivers in there and only one running back
- 22:52Curtis and Brooks to the left
- 22:54Miers the right back, the throw goes to Anderson
- 22:56The drop back, he fires the screen over there to Miers and the chip goes to the lane
- 23:00Dropped at the 42 yard line by Lloyd Mumford
- 23:03The cornerback on that side, Mumford diagnosed that screen to the flat well over there
- 23:08And McAnally will go in as we'll have our first fun of the afternoon
- 23:12Now little Howard Stevens, the former Louisville star
- 23:14Is the man who returns the punch for the Baltimore Colts
- 23:17Last week he had a 15 yard average on returns against the New England Patriots
- 23:22He brought two of them back to average that figure
- 23:25They've got two shallow men with Stevens back at about the 15
- 23:29McAnally averaged over 37 yards, about 37-2 last week against the Broncos
- 23:35There's the snap back, McAnally gets it
- 23:38Aims it over toward the sideline, it's not a good punt, it's taken it to the 30 yard line
- 23:43The signal's fair catch, Delvin Morgan dropped him
- 23:47But Morgan was past him and did not see the fair catch sign
- 23:50But the Colts are arguing about it
- 23:52D. Wallace was the man who took it in, not a very good boot by McAnally at all
- 24:05Draft can't understand him, Morgan was by and did not see it
- 24:08So the Colts will have the ball at the 30 and that is only a 28 yard boot by McAnally
- 24:13Who didn't really seem to kick the ball hard
- 24:15So for the second time this afternoon, now the Colts have the ball on offense
- 24:21Lydell Mitchell last year became the first Colt ever to gain over a thousand yards
- 24:26Glenn Doughty comes to the right and it's then Roger Carr out to the left
- 24:30Doughty was the wingback at Michigan but is a wide receiver here
- 24:33He goes in motion, it's a quick pitch
- 24:35Not outside Lydell Mitchell and he's going no plays, he gets a couple of yards maybe
- 24:39Jim LeClair was over there to spin him down
- 24:41Bob Brown circled the play around, was over there to help out
- 24:46It's a gain of two
- 24:49Doughty came in motion on that side and as he got up to the line of scrimmage he stopped
- 24:53He was right there to be a blocker on the play
- 24:55So a toss back to Mitchell coming around to the right
- 24:57A gain of two at the 32, it'll be second and eight
- 25:03And they put Wideman both ways, the backs are split this time, Leakes and Mitchell
- 25:07Bert Jones drops back to throw, looking, fires, fire down to it
- 25:12He's got a man down there, he has to be a touchdown
- 25:15Now to Roger Carr
- 25:18On the far side of the field, the other step on Kenny Riley and Bert Jones hit him
- 25:23That covers 68 yards, a touchdown by Carr
- 25:27Taking that pass, he has a step out of Riley
- 25:30So the close draw, quick blood here on that strike from Bert Jones to Roger Carr
- 25:37That covers 68 yards
- 25:40And like an electrical shock, the Colts have jumped out in front six to nothing
- 25:45And that is what you call your picture perfect play
- 25:48No matter how you look at it, it's perfect on both ends
- 25:52A great throw by Bert Jones and Roger Carr just outraced Ken Riley
- 25:57And never broke stride, took it in at about the 15 yard line and went in unmolested
- 26:03But now Tony Leonard will attempt the extra point
- 26:06To put the ball down, the kick is off and it is good
- 26:10So there's time out on the field, the short out of the Colts, seven and the Bengals, nothing
- 26:14When you get the urge to know what you've got to do and do
- 26:25You've got to satisfy that urge with a thing of your own
- 26:31Get the urge to burger, get the urge to burger, get the urge to burger, get the urge to burger
- 26:46And any time you get the burger urge, you know what to do
- 26:49Don't go around acting like a demented super jock
- 26:52Reach into the cooler and pull out a better than ever burger
- 26:56Don't be bamboozled, you've discovered the zingier, fresher flavor of burger beer
- 27:01Get the urge to burger, get the urge to burger, get the urge to burger
- 27:16Burger Brewing Company, Cincinnati, Ohio
- 27:18Bird Jones is now three out of four passing for 81 yards
- 27:25Including that 68th yarder just now to Roger Carr
- 27:30And lightning strikes quickly, the Colts leading by a score of seven to nothing
- 27:34Cleveland has added a touchdown in the third quarter and now leads Pittsburgh 14 to nothing
- 27:39Willie Shelby and Lenville Alley to the deep end, Tony Leonard will kick off
- 27:44There's the whistle, Leonard's kick will not be as long as the first one
- 27:48It'll come down to Shelby at the five, comes straight up laterally to the 15 to the 20
- 27:53To the 25, still on his feet to the 30 and comes all the way up to the 35 yard line
- 27:57Before he's stacked up by about three, Colts
- 28:00Over on the dirt, in between first base and second base on the baseball diamonds
- 28:05So the Bengals have pretty good field position out of the 35
- 28:08After a 30 yard return by Willie Shelby and Nelson Munzee
- 28:11Their cornerback was the man who brought him down there
- 28:14You know, a very interesting fact on that Cleveland-Pittsburgh game this afternoon
- 28:17Cleveland has never won at Three Rivers Stadium
- 28:20But at halftime they're leading the Steelers 14 to nothing
- 28:23Oh, I thought that was in the third quarter, that's halftime
- 28:25Maybe the Steelers haven't recovered from that one last week at Oakland
- 28:28Curtis nearside, Brooks fireside, Bengals trailing here by seven points
- 28:34Anderson goes back to throw, looks, fires up the middle, is caught by Brooks
- 28:37And he's down in Colts territory by Lloyd Mumford at about the 47 or 48 yard line
- 28:42Billy Brooks, the gazelle-like number one draft choice
- 28:46Out of Oklahoma, doing a slant, coming from the right side of the field
- 28:49And then slanting across right down the middle
- 28:51The Colts, of course, are a zone club
- 28:54And a zone can be hit in the middle and that's right where Brooks slanted that time
- 28:57And he was dragged down immediately at the 35, a quick gain of 17
- 29:01And the Bengals have a first down
- 29:04Now Brooks and Curtis both come to the nearside
- 29:07That'll bring Bruce Laird over to help out the right cornerback Muncie
- 29:11Actually it's a double wing formation
- 29:13Gripping the only man in behind Anderson, a quick pitch, Brownie outside
- 29:16Archie gets the block and gets about three yards to the 45 yard line
- 29:20Vern Holland got a good block over there on the linebacker, Jim Schienke
- 29:25And then Jackie Wallace came up in the safety spot to put the stop and grip
- 29:29And it's a 45 after Archie has picked up three
- 29:36So it'll be second and seven
- 29:43The nose of the ball right on the Colts, 45
- 29:45Colts lead at 7-0 on the 68 yard touchdown pass from Jones to Carr
- 29:50Now it's an eye formation, Curtis and Brooks are split on opposite sides
- 29:55Anderson on a fake draw, back to throw
- 29:57Half time, going long down the field, he over throws Bill Brooks
- 30:01Right down at about the three yard line, Anderson was good protection that time
- 30:05But there was good coverage over there by Lloyd Mumford
- 30:07Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification
- 30:12You're listening to Cincinnati Bengals football and Baltimore Colts on WSO in Henderson
- 30:19Griffin has carried four times for four yards this afternoon
- 30:25And the Bengals at the Colts 45 have a third and seven
- 30:28Chip Myers now, John McDaniel in the ballgame
- 30:31As the Bengals go, the free wide receivers again here on the third and seven play
- 30:36Anderson back to throw, look, fires out on the flat, it's caught up to 50 to the 45
- 30:40Tony Davis gets to about the 42, or Chris rather, Dan Chris
- 30:44But it will not be a first down, stopped about four yards short
- 30:48The Bengals hope to spread out that defense
- 30:50Then Anderson just dropped it off to Chris coming out the left side
- 30:53But he was dropped at the Colts 42, Ray Oldham, who had gone in as the fifth defensive back to replace Cheyensky
- 30:59Was the man who was in on the stop
- 31:01Bill McAnally will be in to boot again, McAnally of course will be aiming for that top and corner
- 31:07A line of scrimmage is the Colts 42 yard line
- 31:10Snap back, McAnally gets the ball, angles it over toward the near side at the high boot
- 31:15Will it go out or go into the end zone? It goes on into the end zone
- 31:19So it will come out to the 20, the Colts put it in play at that point
- 31:24Colts leading at 7 to nothing here, and we have three minutes and 46 seconds left to play in this first quarter
- 31:29They got it on that electrifying 68 yard pass from Jones to Roger Carr
- 31:34And Carr had about a step on Ken Riley
- 31:37And Riley leaped into the air trying to get the pass and fell down
- 31:40And then Carr just romped in the last 20 yards unmolexed
- 31:44So the blue jersey Colts with that 7 to nothing lead break the huddle, send out Carr to the far side, Doughty comes to the near side
- 31:51Mitchell and Leakes to the running backs in behind Burt Jones
- 31:54Now Doughty comes in motion, the handoff into the line coming forward for about three yards as Roosevelt Leakes
- 32:02Bob Brown made the tackle on him as he came in over his own right guard and right tackle
- 32:07Ron Carpenter down at the bottom of the stack
- 32:09The gate of about four on a straight off power tackle
- 32:13The 24 it will be second and sixth
- 32:19Beautiful afternoon in Baltimore, 81 degrees of game time
- 32:25Doughty and Carr again go wide in the backs, Mitchell and Leakes will split this time
- 32:30They use Mitchell either way, into the line or wide, again Doughty in motion
- 32:34Handoff, around the far side goes Leakes, he tried the left side and he's just behind the line of scrimmage
- 32:39Roy Bacon and Ron Carpenter were both in there and Leakes had no place to go as he tried to swing to the left
- 32:45He was knocked down for a loss of a yard back at the 23
- 32:49And that will bring up a third and seven now for the Colts
- 32:52It looked like there might have been a little bit of indecision on the part of Leakes that time
- 32:55He definitely was swinging left but he looked for a moment as though he wanted to go wide left
- 32:59And then all of a sudden changed his mind, wanted to come up in the middle
- 33:02But by that time it was too late, that Bengal second, that Bengal line had swarmed around him
- 33:06And it was a loss of two yards
- 33:08And now McCauley who goes in on third down for Leakes or Mitchell is in for Leakes this time
- 33:13The Colts have a double wing formation, an obvious passing situation, Bert Jones back to thriddle
- 33:18Fires up, it's intercepted Casanova, down the sideline it will be a touchdown
- 33:23Tommy Casanova stepped right in front of the intended receiver, Lydell Mitchell
- 33:28And just picked that ball off at about the 30 yard line and the Bengals are right back in it now
- 33:33And Bert Jones comes off hanging his head dejectedly
- 33:36I'll tell you Bill Culler was really, really bearing down on Jones
- 33:40And Jones may not have seen Casanova over there at all
- 33:43Tommy just stepped in front of Mitchell I believe out of the 30 and no one laid a hand on him
- 33:48As he went down the sidelines and quickly now Littlefoot, Chris Barr, could tie this up at 7-7
- 33:55The tag Littlefoot hung on him by Koi Bacon who has all kinds of names for people
- 34:01Snap is high but the kick is up in the air and it is good
- 34:05And Bill the Bengals have tied it up and the interception by Casanova, Tommy's second interception of the year
- 34:10He picked one off last week against the Denver Broncos
- 34:14And a great move by Casanova, he just stepped right in front of him at the last moment and there was nobody there
- 34:20And of course as I mentioned Casanova and Bert Jones were teammates down at LSU
- 34:25Casanova a year ahead of Jones and they played together, they were chatting together before the ballgame
- 34:29But friendship ends right there
- 34:31Talking about Chris Barr, Littlefoot, even though he's missed 8 of his last 11 field goal attempts
- 34:35He has been almost perfect on extra points
- 34:38He has played here in Memorial Stadium before, as a matter of fact he was the key figure in his team's victory
- 34:44The last time he played here in the stadium he scored the game's only goal in a Philadelphia Adams win
- 34:49Over the now defunct Baltimore Comets in the summer of 75 when he won Rookie of the Year honors in the North American Soccer League
- 34:55Well Howard Stevens is a deep man and Chris Barr will kick off now
- 35:01Barr's kick is a good one, it will be down to Howard Stevens, very high right at the 1
- 35:06Stevens comes up to the 10, to the 15, slips and rolls down at about the 22
- 35:11He's pinned down there at that point by a couple of Bengals, Reggie Williams one of those in there
- 35:15The Mighty Mites from Louisville kind of stumbled as he tried to change direction there just up over the 20
- 35:21They'll put it down at the 22 and the coach will start from there
- 35:24So we have a 7 to 7 ball game, two electrifying plays on the touchdown
- 35:28A long pass by Baltimore and then Casanova's interception for the Bengals
- 35:39Burley, Bacon, or rather Johnson, Brown, Carpenter and Bacon across the front
- 35:44Double wing formation again for the coach, Jones face rolls out to his left, goes back to throw
- 35:48Fires up the middle, Mitchell has it and is dragged down at the 35
- 35:52Lydell Mitchell coming out of that backfield, Jim LeClaire picked him up and was right there to wrestle him down
- 35:58But Bert Jones really drilled that ball to Mitchell who is probably as good at catching running back as there is in this National Football League
- 36:06And except upon that last pass that was intercepted by Casanova, Baltimore's offensive line has given Bert Jones pretty good protection
- 36:13The ball is up at the 36, a 14 yard gain in the first down
- 36:17At 7, 7 here with a minute 39 left in the half, now Doughty and Carp both split in the back so they're in an eye behind Jones
- 36:24Hand off to the second man, Lydell Mitchell and he squirms his way forward to the 40
- 36:28Gets about 4 yards as he just wiggled and stutter stepped in over that right side
- 36:33Bo Harris along with Bob Brown, one of the men who made the stop on him
- 36:37There wasn't much of a hole there, Mitchell really made it out of zone as he just stutter stepped up there looking for the hole
- 36:42And after the 4 yard pick up the coach, we'll have a second and six
- 36:46Bert Jones has hit 4 for 6 this afternoon for 94 but has the one interception of course
- 36:51Kenny Anderson is 5 for 9, the back's again in an eye, Jones looks both ways as he barks out those signals
- 36:56Brings in Doughty a hand off, into the line goes Mitchell, he's got about 6
- 37:01And it looks as though the hole might be rather wide open, he was cut down by Jim LeClair and is very close to what he needed for the first down
- 37:08A 6 yard gain as the nose of the ball is just shy of the Baltimore 46
- 37:13They trapped up on the line a little delay on a hand off from Jones to Mitchell and Mitchell really accelerated once he got that ball
- 37:20And they're bringing in the chain crew to measure
- 37:23It is very close, it's just a matter of about 2 or 3 inches short
- 37:29So that brings in McAuley along with their second tight end who is Jimmy Kennedy, a second year man from Colorado State
- 37:36It's just inches, third in that amount, the Colts at their own 46 yard line
- 37:4153 seconds left to play in the first quarter of the 7-7 ball game
- 37:48Bengals with 5 men up and 3 linebackers
- 37:52Up jammed right in behind, hand off into the line, I don't know, a big pile up, can't see where the ball carrier Don McAuley went
- 38:01That's a wait until he unstacked, they only had inches to go, it isn't likely it could have been stopped
- 38:06But Bo Harris just completely obstructed our view as he came swinging around from the side
- 38:11They got just a few inches on the play and that's all they needed, it is the first down as the ball is just covering the 46 yard line
- 38:18A couple of changes in scores now at half time, the New England Patriots have taken a 13-7 lead over the Miami Dolphins
- 38:24And at half time the Houston Orlins and the Buffalo Bills all even at 3-3
- 38:30Roosevelt Leafs is back in the Baltimore backfield
- 38:35They all split, and Dowdy again goes in motion toward the line of scrimmage, fake hand off back to Thro, it is complete
- 38:42The Car and Raleigh has them down at the Bengals 40 yard line
- 38:45Car looks as though they are going deep that time, then hooked back at the Bengals 40
- 38:49And on a perfectly timed play, Bert Jones put it right in his numbers and Raleigh was there to drag them down
- 38:55But it is the Colts first down at the 40 as the first quarter closes
- 38:59end of the quarter with a score of the Bengal 7 and the Colts 7.

- 40:03It's 1.40 at Radio 86 WSO in Henderson. Your spot for sports...
- 40:08Starting the second quarter, we have a 7-7 ballgame here between the Bengals and the
- 40:12Baltimore Colts. And the Bengals are going to have to get a little more pressure on Bert
- 40:16Jones because it doesn't take him long to get that ball away.
- 40:21The Bengals have their own 40-yard line having to dig in. They have wide men spread both
- 40:26ways. Handoff is Lydell Mitchell trying to score him in the line. He's got a couple of
- 40:29yards as he wiggled in over left tackle. Ron Pritchard, first man to get to him. And there
- 40:34was a lot of help there from Carpenter. Jim LeClaire was also in there. The gain is a
- 40:39couple of yards to the 38, and it will be a second and eight for the Colts.
- 40:437-7 here as we're in the first minute of the second quarter. The Bengals defense got the
- 40:48Bengals touchdown. An interception by Casanova. Officially, I don't know how long it was,
- 40:52but it was right about at the Colts' 30-yard line where he picked it off and ran it back
- 40:55in. They got it on a 68-yard pass and Jones to
- 40:59Carr. Out the double wing formation with only Leakes in behind Jones. Rolling out to his
- 41:05right is Bert Jones looking to pass the knockdown by Kenny Johnson right in Bert Jones' face.
- 41:09As he rolled to his right and tried to throw over that way, Kenny Johnson was right on
- 41:13top of him. Kenny Johnson at 6-6, just got those big arms up in the air and batted that
- 41:18pass away. So it will come back to the 38 and will be
- 41:21third and eight. And Bill Coller is in there on the passing situation, replacing Bob Brown.
- 41:28McCauley goes in as usual on a third down play. Usually if they're going to run, he'll
- 41:32replace Mitchell. And if they figure on passing, he'll replace Leakes. Leakes is the man who
- 41:37has come out this time. Neither quarterback has been sacked thus far.
- 41:43Jones fakes and goes back to throw. Koybacon chasing him and, boy, knocks him down back
- 41:49to the 48-yard line. Get him from behind and got to him.
- 41:54He forced Jones to run to his right and then Bacon got him from behind before he could
- 42:01get the pass away back at the 47. So that will force the Colts to punt.
- 42:05Just as I was talking about Kenny Anderson throwing only one interception in every 33
- 42:09attempts a while ago, up he comes with the interception. And when Phil was talking about
- 42:14neither quarterback being sacked, bingo, we get a sack by Koybacon.
- 42:18It was a great time to get it, too. So David Lee, who averaged 47 yards on three
- 42:24punts, will probably angle it toward the coffin corner.
- 42:26There's the snap back and he drills the boot high and it will go on into the end zone,
- 42:31lands a couple yards deep and it'll come out to the 20.
- 42:34So there's time out on the field. Score, Bengal 7, Colts 7.
- 42:39And now, the senior Chevy dealer. Because right now a lot of Chevrolet dealers
- 42:44are having their garage sale on 1976 Chevrolets. They have to make room for the 77 Chevrolets
- 42:50that will be coming in this fall. So right now a lot of Chevy dealers are having
- 42:55their garage sale on 76 models. What it all means is that you'll likely get
- 42:59just about the best deals you can get on some of the best cars and trucks you can get, Chevrolets.
- 43:06You'll find a variety of models to choose from. Sporty Monza 2 Plus 2's, dressy Monza
- 43:11Town Coupes, top Chevy Vegas, Chevettes, plus bigger size Monte Carlos, Chevelles, and Impalas.
- 43:18You'll likely find great deals on all those great cars and trucks at your Chevy dealers
- 43:24right now. Why? Because when your Chevy dealer has a garage
- 43:28sale, it's that get a great deal on a Chevy time of year.
- 43:32So see your Chevy dealer for a great deal on a brand new 1976 Chevrolet.
- 43:38And do it today. Jimmy Crumb along with Bill Samp back at
- 43:44Memorial Stadium in Baltimore where our score is 7-7 with 13-49 remaining in the second
- 43:50quarter. Updated scores in the third quarter now.
- 43:53The Atlanta Falcons lead the Detroit Lions 10-0.
- 43:56In the first quarter, it's St. Louis 6 and Green Bay nothing.
- 44:00The Bengals now moving from left to right as we look at them, left to right across your
- 44:03radio dial. Kenny Anderson may have a bit of a problem
- 44:06with the sun because he'll be looking directly into it.
- 44:09Chip Myers has replaced Billy Brooks. Glenville Elliott has replaced Archie Griffin.
- 44:15Hand off around right side comes Glenville Elliott and he flips as he tries to cut in
- 44:19and just gets back to the line of scrimmage and that's all.
- 44:22He'll be pinned down, put down right there. Elliott's slipping as he tried to cut in,
- 44:27barrel loose right there to make sure that he was down.
- 44:30So there's no gain in the play and at the 20, it will be second and 10.
- 44:38The Bengals are on the fire side of the field. Baltimore Colts bench right in front of us.
- 44:42Our bandage point is not very high and we're fairly close to the field.
- 44:45A good observation point. Myers left side.
- 44:51Near side is Curtis. The back split behind Anderson.
- 44:53And he drops straight back to throw. Look, Myers downfield. There's Curtis.
- 44:57For Myers, he has it down the sideline at the 40, 35, to the 30, 25 and he's wrestled
- 45:02down at about the Colts 15 yard line. Coming over with Nelson Muncie.
- 45:09What a beautiful pattern. Myers ran that time.
- 45:11He ran straight downfield, then veered to the sideline and that's where he lost Muncie.
- 45:16And Myers took the ball in and Muncie trying to come back ran all the way out of bounds
- 45:19and came back out of the field to finally drag him down, they're going to play at the
- 45:2317 yard line. So there's the first long one of the afternoon
- 45:27as the Bengals are connected up with the Curious and their own 20 to the Colts 17 and quick
- 45:32arithmetic shows that's good for 63 quick yards. And there's the mark of an old pro
- 45:36as Phil said. Chip Myers running a perfect pass pattern
- 45:40and forced the man to run out of bounds and come back in to catch him and then gave him
- 45:43a stiff arm and picked up another two or three yards while the man was hanging on.
- 45:48Now Myers has gone out and Brooks has come back in.
- 45:51The Bengals down at the Colts 17. Backs in and I, there's Pritz and Elliott.
- 45:56Fake handoff, back to throw Anderson fires into the end zone.
- 45:59Truffey touchdown. Bob Truffey off on the left flat.
- 46:03It's beaten their safety man and then Nelson Muncie came over and tried to cover and Truffey
- 46:08just caught that ball in the corner right down by the pylon.
- 46:11So it's two quick passes and the Bengals go 80 yards, 63 to Chip Myers.
- 46:17And the final 17 to Bob Truffey and the Bengals jump out in front now 13 to 7.
- 46:23Truffey really had Muncie on the ropes down there and Anderson drilled that ball into
- 46:27him perfectly. The line gave him excellent protection, a
- 46:30long time to throw and now Littlefoot will try to make it 14 to 7.
- 46:36Marvin Cobb will hold. Ball is down, the kick is up in the air and
- 46:40it is good. So there's time out on the field with a score
- 46:43now. The Bengals 14 and the Colts 7.

- 47:44With 12.16 left in the second quarter, the Bengals have taken a 14 to 7 lead. The Bengals
- 47:55moving 80 yards in three plays for the touchdown. There's Barsboot and it'll sail back into
- 48:00the end zone about four yards deep and Stevens will come out. He's at the five to the ten
- 48:05and oh, is he driven down at about the 17 yard line. There was a tremendous hit over
- 48:10there by Tony Davis. Davis carries that ball and he was running just like a ball carrier
- 48:15and he really drilled little Howard Stevens at about the 17 or 18 yard line and a close
- 48:20will be starting out from there. Tony Davis has been an excellent hard hitter
- 48:25on these special teams. The ball is just over the 17 for statistical purposes, it'll be
- 48:30the 18 and a close will start from there. The Bengals in front 14 to 7 here in the second
- 48:35quarter. Got a lot of time to go over 12 minutes. They put Carr and Doughty on both sides. Bert
- 48:41Jones goes straight back to throw. Fires incomplete. He intended it for Doughty on a plant but
- 48:46the pass was low and it went into the dirt. On the baseball diamond in front of Doughty
- 48:52who was planting in, Bernard Jackson was coming over there to help out on that side and Kenny
- 48:57Roddy the cornerback. So it went incomplete and it'll be second hand chance.
- 49:01Got it took the Bengals just three plays from their 20 yard line and no gainer by Elliott
- 49:07and then two quick passes. One from 63 yards to Myers who put it down on the 17. The Bengals
- 49:12came right back on a pass from Anderson to Trump. He just scored. Double wing formation
- 49:19this time. Leakes the only man in behind. Leakes gets it and he gets nowhere as he tries to
- 49:23come up over the middle. He's nailed for a loss perhaps by Bob Brown. Bob Brown put his
- 49:28290 pounds into Roosevelt Leakes and Leakes was just out of the box when Bob Brown wrapped
- 49:34him up none too gently and just drilled him right back at about the 17 yard line.
- 49:39You know we used to talk Phil about how quickly Mike Reed came off that ball. Bob Brown comes
- 49:44off the ball just as quickly perhaps even more so as you've seen when the Bengals play at
- 49:49home he comes off so quickly he tries to anticipate the call that many times he is called for being
- 49:55offside. The Steelers have scored now it's 14-7 Cleveland in the third quarter. Still
- 50:00third about 11 for the Colts. Back to throw goes Jones. Looking now he's going to run.
- 50:05Still looking now he stops and throws upfield incomplete. He threw it away. There was nobody
- 50:10up there. The closest man to it was Pritchard. Ron Carpenter drilled Burt Jones and they
- 50:15get up and shake hands with each other. There wasn't any Colt anywhere near that place so
- 50:23the Bengals defense has done just what it's had to do. They'll force David Lee to boot
- 50:27from deep in his own territory at the 16. But he puts a lot of foot into that ball.
- 50:32So the Bengals have their three men back. Shelby and Perry for the deep men. Short man
- 50:41is Marvin Cobb. David Lee standing back at about the one yard line. He'll kick from about
- 50:46the six. The snap from center is good and he gets it away. Tremendous booming spiral.
- 50:50Back to Perry's all the way up to the 29. Lee takes it there at the 30. At the 35 still
- 50:56on his feet. Can't get away but does get back to the 40. That punt was so high that Baltimore
- 51:01had a lot of time to get men downfield and Perry did a good job in getting it back about
- 51:0511 yards before Tim Bader got them. So the Bengals will have them all at their own 40
- 51:10and start out this drive from there. That was a tremendous boot. Let's see a 29.16.
- 51:15That made it about 55 yards by rough calculation. Let's see 29.55. Right. 55 yards and an 11
- 51:23yard return by Lamar Perry. Ball first and 10 for the Bengals at their own 40 yard line.
- 51:280-3 left to the second grip. Bengals leading at 14 to 7. Brooks lines up tight left side.
- 51:34Curtis on the right side. Strips and Elliott at the running back. Anderson with the ball.
- 51:39Gives to Fripp. In over left tackle. Stan fights his way up for maybe a couple but that's
- 51:43about all he can muster as he tries to slam in over that left tackle behind Mays. And
- 51:48John Schinner is over there. A lot of colts in on the tackle. About three or four. Joe
- 51:52Ehrman, the last man up off the stack. And at the 42 it becomes second and eighth. Now
- 51:58Griffin goes back into the ball game replacing Landfell Elliott. Archie is carried four times
- 52:03for four yards. Now both Brooks and Curtis go to the far side in a slot. Crumpy lines
- 52:12up at the right side. This is strong left formation. Now Curtis comes in motion over
- 52:17to the near side of the field and Anderson goes back to throw. Anderson looks. Fires
- 52:21out. All alone Griffin has it. He's down to the close 35 yard line before he's dragged
- 52:26out. Archie came out of the backfield and really did a curly cue over on that far side
- 52:30on Nelson Muncie. And when Anderson drilled that ball to him there was no one within five
- 52:35yards to Griffin. He gathered in at the 40 and fought his way ahead for another five
- 52:39to the 35. I was watching Archie that time having just seen him come on the field to
- 52:44replace Landfell Elliott. And he did just what Phil said. He came out of the backfield
- 52:47and went right straight downfield. Did a little hook at about the 40 yard line. Took the pass
- 52:53in and then took it on down to the 35. It was good for a quick 23 and a first down.
- 52:59Hand off the second man. Griffin goes in the line. He's stopped but the flag is down. In
- 53:03the whistle blue. I didn't notice the time clock. The Bengals may not have beat it on
- 53:06that play. Let's see. It's the illegal procedure against the Bengals which will cost them five.
- 53:12That'll move it back to the 40. I don't believe the Colts have been penalized this afternoon.
- 53:16This is the second illegal procedure call that I remember against the Bengals. It's
- 53:20been a relatively penalty free game. They'll come back to the 40 now and it'll be first
- 53:26and 15. You know Phil they've had quite a bit of turmoil over here in recent days with
- 53:32the March of Brodo resignation and then rehiring 48 hours later. At halftime we're going to
- 53:37have as our special guest Joe Thomas the general manager of the Baltimore Colts who was involved
- 53:42in that brouhaha. I'll say he was involved. Nobody knows more about it than Joe Thomas.
- 53:46So we'll see what we can find out at halftime. Slot formation both Brooks and Curtis to the
- 53:51left now. Anderson goes back to throw. Hand off and a slow draw up the middle to Fritz.
- 53:56Fritz all the way down inside the 30. That slow draw play into the 28 yard line before
- 54:02the middle linebacker Jim Schiazinski can haul him down. He gained about 11 yards on
- 54:06the play. Anderson drop back. The pressure was from the outside and he just reached around
- 54:10Fritz and handed the ball to him and Fritz folded straight up and down into the 28. Given
- 54:1512 on the play and it'll make his second down now and about three. Bengals lead is 14-7.
- 54:21Nine minutes and ten seconds left here in this first half. The Eagles lead the Giants
- 54:2613 to nothing in the third quarter. The Bengals down at the infield end of Memorial Stadium
- 54:32here. Hand off into the right side. Goes Griffin. First into the clear momentarily and gets
- 54:36down inside the 20 to about the 19. Only one man between him and the goal line. Dragged
- 54:44down by I believe Jackie Wallace, number 20 got him or Bruce Laird, number 40. But a big
- 54:48hole opened on the right side and that has been Griffin's longest run in a regular season
- 54:53game. That one was good for nine and it will be a first down. The Bengals leading 14 to
- 54:58seven are down knocking again at the close door. Brooks and Curtis go out left. Fritz
- 55:05and Griffin the running back. Kenny Anderson gives the ball to Fritz. Stand up the middle.
- 55:10He's got a lot of room and he's all the way down inside the 10 to about the nine. Big
- 55:14blocking in the middle of that line by Latham. Bob Johnson along with Glenn Bush knocking.
- 55:19It was a free to head play and they just moved the Colts out of there. Mumford and Wallace
- 55:23had to come up from the secondary to make the stop. Fritz gained another 10 yards on
- 55:28the play. And we'll bring in the chains now to measure. Well, as soon as Fritz's knees
- 55:35can hold up, Bill, and they seem to be getting better all the time, he still has knee problems,
- 55:39but they seem to be getting better. And if those knees can hold up, it could be that
- 55:42the Bengals have found the big running back, the big pullback that they've been looking
- 55:46for and the kind of response from their pullback personnel that they haven't gotten since Booby
- 55:50Clark gained almost 1,000 yards three years ago. Stan Fritz has ripped off Goodyardy this
- 55:57year. Fritz has carried five times now for 39 yards. First and goal for the Bengals at
- 56:05the Colt nine. Brooks and Curtis line up out to the left side. The back split behind Anderson.
- 56:12And off Griffin into the right side. He fights his way forward for a couple of hard earned
- 56:16yards. Stan White and Mike Barnes in on the tackle. Mike Barnes, the big fourth year man
- 56:21from Miami, 6'6 and 256. Griffin got two down to the seven yard line and it will be second
- 56:27and goal at that point. Here's the place where the Bengals do not want to be stopped. No
- 56:31team does. When you get down close, you want to be able to punch that ball in. But the
- 56:35yards are tough to go by down here. Second and goal at the seven. This time Anderson
- 56:41swings both Curtis and Brooks out to the right side. Wallace comes over to cover with a cornerback
- 56:45on that side, Lloyd Mumford. Anderson rolling out to his right, looking down into the end
- 56:50zone, throws it away. There's nobody open down there. Both Brooks and Curtis were covered.
- 56:55Brooks threw his hand up into the air, but that's before Anderson had a chance to look
- 56:59down and see. So now on third down and goal at the seven, let's see what the Bengals pull
- 57:04out. John Shinners brings in the play and Glenn Buzhnack goes out. 7'21 showing on
- 57:10the clock. It stopped after the incompleted pass. The Bengals lead 14 to 7 after the Colts
- 57:15jumped out to a 7 to nothing lead in the first quarter. The ball right at the Colts' seven.
- 57:22Curtis goes to the far side. To the near side comes Brooks. Wide split in the back behind
- 57:28Anderson. Let's see what they're going to do. Anderson rolls out to his right, looks
- 57:33downfield. Now there's nobody there and he runs and gets to the nine and that's all.
- 57:37He was pinned down by Joe Erman. Billy Brooks had drawn a couple of men over to the right
- 57:42side. I believe that's where Anderson wanted to go. That's where he looked. Trumpy was
- 57:45down in the end zone. So was Curtis. But Anderson couldn't find anybody and had to run. So it
- 57:50will bring in Chris Barr. Four and a field goal attempt. Barr last week was just one
- 57:56out of three against Denver. The ball will be placed down at the 16 yard line. It will
- 58:03make it a 26 yard attempt. Barr did not have a good preseason by any means in the long
- 58:08run. The ball is snapped down. This kick is up in the air and this one I believe is, yes
- 58:13it is good. So this time he hits some 26 yards and there's time out on the field. The score
- 58:18now the Bengal 17 and the Colts 7. Chris Barr who had missed eight of his last 11 field goal
- 58:24attempts, hits one from 26 yards out and with 6.42 remaining in the second quarter here
- 58:29at Memorial Stadium, it's the Bengal 17, the Baltimore Colts 7. So Stevens the deep man,
- 58:35flanked by Laird and McCauley. Barr's kick is high. This time it will be Stevens taking
- 58:44it at the 5. Up straight to the 10, to the 15, to the 20. Comes up at the 30. The 35
- 58:50yard line still on his feet. A flag is down. He's in Bengal Field at the 49 yard line but
- 58:56a flag was thrown back at the Colts 35 and let's see if we got a clip or something in
- 59:00there. Chris Barr was the man in on the tackle and now let's see what the flag is going to
- 59:05be. It apparently is going to be against the Colts and it's probably 15. It's a personal
- 59:09foul against Baltimore. It'll take it from their own 36 yard line back to their 21. Stevens
- 59:16got it back all the way to the Bengal's 49 yard line. Chris Barr got it. It didn't indicate
- 59:21that it was clipping, just that it was a personal foul. That'll take it back to the Colts 21
- 59:25or 22 yard line, make it. It's not a personal foul cause. I looked at him closer, he indicated
- 59:30holding. No doubt he and Carr are split now and the Colts will be starting at their own
- 59:3422. Leakes and Mitchell with a split in behind Burt Jones. Jones dropped that quick plant
- 59:40caught by Carr and he's going to be dragged down by Kenny Riley at about the 35 yard line.
- 59:45Burt Jones on that quick plant into Roger Carr, gained 13 in the play and the Colts
- 59:53have that quick first down. For six minutes now left to play in this first half the Bengals
- 59:57hold a 17 to 7 lead.
- 59:59The pass protection by both teams has been good. Koy Bacon slacked Burt Jones once. That
- 1:00:09was after he was chased out of the pocket and Bacon got him from behind. Double wing
- 1:00:14formation now Mitchell out in the slot. They like to send him down field and all over.
- 1:00:18Roosevelt leaks the only man back. Back to throw is Burt Jones still looking. Fires up
- 1:00:23field. It's the question Riley intercepted. That's a 50 down to the 35. Fires out of a
- 1:00:2830 to the 30 to the 20 and he's going to be knocked down. And it's picked up by a Bengal
- 1:00:35who is on the ball on a pitcher's mound. That is back and let's see who got it. The Colts
- 1:00:39are signaling as they got it. A Bengal had it and is recovered by the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:00:44And Kenny Riley is really sick. He's run that ball all the way back to the 17 yard line.
- 1:00:50I thought a Bengal had the ball but it was under him as he was lying on the ball and
- 1:00:56when he came off a Colt got it. I couldn't tell who. Riley picked that ball off and was
- 1:01:00deflected by the short receiver and looked as though he might go all the way but it was
- 1:01:04knocked out of his hands way back to the 17 yard line and the Colts finally recovered
- 1:01:09the ball at their own 12 right by the pitcher's mound. That's where the scramble for the ball
- 1:01:13was. Riley just buried his head down on the grass after he saw that the Colts had recovered
- 1:01:19the fumble. Pittsburgh has the field goal down as 14 to 10 in the third quarter. So
- 1:01:30the Colts will have a first down back at their own 12 yard line after a lot of excitement.
- 1:01:34Back to throw is Jones. He's going far down field. Riley and steps out of bounds. Roger
- 1:01:41Carr at the Bengals 37 yard line. And Casanovas called for a personal foul down in the end
- 1:01:48zone after he tackled it late but he had stepped out of bounds at the Bengals 37. And now let's
- 1:01:56see how they will mark off that penalty. The play has been dead so I don't believe that
- 1:02:00any foul. Now wait a minute. Now they're going all the way back to the line of scrimmage
- 1:02:04and let's see what this one is for a consultation back there. Carr definitely stepped out of
- 1:02:11bounds at the 37 in front of the Colts bench. He did go all the way down into the end zone
- 1:02:16and Casanova hit him when he was about five yards in the end zone and a flag was thrown
- 1:02:20down there. The officials are discussing it with the Bengals. This is a weird one. Roger
- 1:02:28Carr got that step on Kenny Riley again but went out of bounds after he caught the ball.
- 1:02:33A penalty is going to be against the Colts. Either that or they're going to be offsetting
- 1:02:38penalties. This is one where we're just going to have to wait. It's a legal procedure called
- 1:02:47against the Baltimore Colts. A personal foul against the Bengals that will nullify it.
- 1:02:53So it is called a personal foul and they're offsetting penalties. Against Casanova down
- 1:02:58in the end zone all the play was dead. So that will bring it back to the 12 yard line and
- 1:03:03that excitement is over and it will remain first and dense. Well that nullifies the long
- 1:03:13gainer. We've had a lot of excitement on two plays only for the ball to wind up right at
- 1:03:18the 12 yard line. Riley had intercepted a pass and the Bengals were in great position
- 1:03:23only to fumble it loose and another Bengal picked it up and then lost it and then another
- 1:03:27one flopped on it and was lying on the ball but somehow it got out from under him and a
- 1:03:31little recover. Now that's a pass history. All history has been a pass. First and tenth
- 1:03:36back split. If he had a handoff and a quick pitch around the right side goes Lydell Mitchell.
- 1:03:41Got some room. He comes up to the 20 and is going to be knocked down finally at the 23.
- 1:03:48Mitchell tried to cut in and as he did so Jim LeClair the middle linebacker was over
- 1:03:52there to pin him down but he gained about 11 on the play and will have a first down.
- 1:03:56Lydell Mitchell on a sweep wide right. Got the blocking and a couple of men out in front
- 1:04:02of him. Jim managed to gain 11 yards and that will be the first down. And Mitchell is one
- 1:04:06of those type of ball players. One of the type of slashing runners who can hurt you
- 1:04:10whether he's going inside or outside. He can hurt you on the sweep and yet at 6 feet and
- 1:04:15190 pounds he has the power to go up the middle and pick up the yardage and hurt you inside
- 1:04:20and out. So we're ready to go. Bert Jones back to throw. Look fires out on the flat
- 1:04:27it's incomplete. Roosevelt couldn't get the pass which was low right down about his shoe
- 1:04:32tops and he couldn't scoop it up. Casanova was over there to quickly cover him. Up to
- 1:04:3823 now it will be second and tenth. Engels lead it 17 to 7 but 418 left to play in this
- 1:04:45first half. Jones is now 6 for 13 for 122 yards on the afternoon and one touchdown and
- 1:04:52two interceptions. Bill Culler has gone in to replace Bob Brown at the left tackle spot.
- 1:05:03Second and tenth. Colts at their own 23. Jones fakes goes back to throw. Look fires up. Bill
- 1:05:11it's complete. The man drops at the Colts 39 yard line. Can't see who it is going up high
- 1:05:16to make the catch over there was Roger Carr. Carr the third year man from Louisiana Tech
- 1:05:26was the man who caught that 68 yard touchdown pass and Bert Jones again had excellent protection
- 1:05:31from his line. He completed that 16 yard play for the first down. Carr was immediately hit
- 1:05:37by a couple of angles as he caught the ball but he made a good reaching catch. Culler
- 1:05:42goes out. Bob Brown comes back in. Crowd begins to chant for the hometown Colts who trail
- 1:05:5117 to 7. Doughty in motion. Handoff in the left side of the line. Bob Brown wrestles
- 1:05:56down Roosevelt Leake for a loss. It was a Kloy Bacon. Kloy Bacon the right end was the
- 1:06:01man who got over there and made the stop and there may be a loss on the play. Ron Carpenter
- 1:06:05was right there to help out if needed. There was a loss of yard. Bacon nailed Leake and
- 1:06:10it will be second and 11. That time it was Kloy Bacon who was off the ball quickly and
- 1:06:15it's difficult sometimes watching them as quickly as they come off the ball to tell
- 1:06:19whether it is Bob Brown or Kloy Bacon but that time it was Bacon. Three minutes now
- 1:06:24the time remaining in this first half. The Colts want to get something up on the board
- 1:06:27before it ends. They have a second and 11 at their own 38. Bert Jones gives the ball
- 1:06:31on an end around. It's Lydell Mitchell. Now he's got the room over there comes up to the
- 1:06:3635 and knocked down with a fine tackle at the 41 yard line and the man who got him was
- 1:06:41Bernard Shack. They gave it to him on an end around play and he had a couple of blocks
- 1:06:46over there but wound up after a lot of excitement a lot of running with just a three yard gain
- 1:06:51out of the 41 and that will make it third and eight. Lydell Mitchell a running back
- 1:07:00lined up out in the flank came around and took that hand off and he was almost hit for
- 1:07:04a loss of about seven or eight yards by someone. That didn't catch him but he did manage to
- 1:07:08get away. Now McFaulty goes in on the third down situation. Replaced his lead.
- 1:07:16Bert Jones goes back to throw. Has plenty of time. Looks. Fires down the middle. Incomplete.
- 1:07:22A flag is going to be thrown. It's going to be fast there. Burrs against Riley on Glenn
- 1:07:30Dowdy. As they came around his neck at the Bengal 35 yard line. And that will give the
- 1:07:34Colts a lease on life at the Bengal 35 with 2 0 4 less than a half. Boy Bert Jones had
- 1:07:40all the time in the world to throw. Koy Bacon was trying to fight his way through David
- 1:07:44Taylor but he couldn't. And Riley who had an interception which certainly set the Bengals
- 1:07:48up in scoring position only lose the ball on a fumble. Now feels extra bad because he's
- 1:07:54called for pass interference and he's the guy that lost Roger Carr on their touchdown
- 1:07:58pass. Ever since Koy Bacon got that sack on Bert Jones early in the second quarter that
- 1:08:05offensive line has worked up and they have given him excellent protection. Now the Colts
- 1:08:09will have time to run off one play before we get to the two minute mark. They come out
- 1:08:13in a double wing formation with only Leakes in behind Bert Jones. Jones back to throws.
- 1:08:19Lips is on. Fires a quick out of the field. A quick out from Jones to Glenn Dowdy and
- 1:08:29the Colts are on them over here now. A 13 yard gainer at the 22. There's time out on the
- 1:08:33field. North Bengal 17 and the Colts 7.
- 1:08:37So when's the babysitter going to be here? Oh in about 15 minutes. I hope this is a good
- 1:08:45movie. Well I got rave reviews in the paper. That doesn't mean anything. Oh that makes
- 1:08:50me so mad. What now? I just snagged my last pair of patty hose. Don't worry about it.

- 1:09:36Two minutes remaining here in the first half at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. The Bengals
- 1:09:46lead the Baltimore Coast by a score of 17 to 7. The Pittsburgh Steelers have now taken
- 1:09:51a 17 to 14 lead over the Cleveland Browns in the third quarter. The Atlanta Falcons
- 1:09:56leading Detroit 10 to nothing in the second period. St. Louis Cardinals have added another
- 1:10:01field goal and now lead the Green Bay Packers 9 to nothing in the first quarter. And the
- 1:10:07Philadelphia Eagles lead the New York Giants 13 to nothing. That is in the fourth period.
- 1:10:12The ball is at the Bengals' 23-yard line now as they've respotted it. With two minutes
- 1:10:16to go in the half, the Coast have it there in the first down. Again, Bert Jones getting
- 1:10:22excellent protection. Doughty-wide in the slot as Carr. Now Mitchell goes out in motion
- 1:10:27to the right side leaving only Leekston behind. Bert Jones back to throw. Fires one down,
- 1:10:31wobbled and Riley dives and can't come up with it. Somebody got a hand on the ball and
- 1:10:36Kenny Riley diving for it almost intercepted it. But it's incomplete. At the 23 now it'll
- 1:10:42be second and 10. That time the Bengals were closing in on Jones and somebody deflected
- 1:10:48that pass and turned it into a wobbler. It only took four seconds, 156 left in the first
- 1:10:55half. The Bengals lead it 17 to 7. Bert Jones is 8 out of 16 this afternoon. He's been
- 1:11:06intercepted twice and has one touchdown pass. Again it's a double wing formation. Jones
- 1:11:12with the ball goes back to his left, goes back to throw. Fires out and a flat incomplete.
- 1:11:18Poorly thrown pass by Jones. Doughty coming back off on the left flat at about the 12
- 1:11:22or 13-yard line was angling back as he was breaking out with a fast throw and too far
- 1:11:28in front of him. And now it'll be third and 10 at the 23. That stops the clock with one
- 1:11:35minute and 53 seconds remaining. The close 23 yards away from Pader, they trail 17 to
- 1:11:417. We've had a lot of excitement, a lot of action here in the second period.
- 1:11:48The Alesteeners after spotting the Browns, 14 points to come back for a 17-14 lead. Both
- 1:11:54backs in behind Jones. Now Mitchell again goes in motion out far side of both receivers
- 1:11:59left side. Back to throw as Jones lobs it down into the end zone. Touchdown to Roger
- 1:12:05Carr. Bernard Jackson just got over there a fraction of a second late. Went up in the
- 1:12:11air for the ball, couldn't get a hand on it. And a second touchdown reception by Roger
- 1:12:16Carr. Jones lobs that one up in the air. And Roger Carr took it in and now it's a
- 1:12:2817 to 13 ball game. So the Colts score with a minute and 47 seconds left in the half.
- 1:12:36Now the Bengals will have the clock and an opportunity to do something about it after
- 1:12:41we have Tony Lindhart's extra point attempt. The ball is snapped, the kick is tipped up
- 1:12:45in the air and it is good. So it's now 17 to 14. The Bengals lead is set to 3 points
- 1:12:51for the minute and 47 seconds left to go. The Colts took that ball after 12 and moved
- 1:12:5888 yards down the field of score. That's where they recover the fumble after Riley crossed
- 1:13:03it up after picking off of Earth Jones' pass. So Roger Carr is at a 68 yarder and a 23 yarder
- 1:13:15for touchdowns. I thought that Bernard Jackson was going to get over there in time to deflect
- 1:13:20the pass but it came down into Carr's arms just beyond his fingertips. Well you can either
- 1:13:28look at it as a 13 plays 78 yard drive or an 11 plays 60 yard drive depending on whether
- 1:13:34you want to say they started at the 12 or the 22. Now they restart at the 12. That's
- 1:13:40where they got the ball back. So it went 88 yards. So it will be Elliott and Shelby, the
- 1:13:45deep man and Tony Lindhart gets set to kick off. Now the Bengals will like to come back
- 1:13:49and do something more on the board before this first half ends. 17 to 14 we got ourselves
- 1:13:53a ball game. Lindhart's kick is a low driver that Tony Davis stopped and picked up at about
- 1:13:59the 25, comes up to the 30, gets to the 35 to about the 37 yard line before he goes down.
- 1:14:04The ball skidded low along the grass. Tony Davis stopped it, picked it up at his feet.
- 1:14:10Ray Oldham, one of the men in the tackle, but the Bengals will have the ball at their
- 1:14:13own 36 and there's a minute and 42 seconds left to go.
- 1:14:19Now see if the Bengals can move downfield quickly to get in position for something.
- 1:14:26Then Curtis and Brooks off to the left side. Elliott and Pritzker to the running back.
- 1:14:35Anderson gives the ball off a big haul. Elliott breaks in the clear at the 50 to the 45 and
- 1:14:40all the way down to the close 40 yard line before he's going to be stopped down there
- 1:14:44standing up. A quick burst through the left side. Elliott, pulled down, loose flare.
- 1:14:50Later on this afternoon Los Angeles and Minnesota, Philadelphia leads New York 13 to nothing
- 1:14:54and the Redskins lead Seattle 24 to nothing. And here we go.
- 1:14:58Back to throw, dump it on the planet caught by Elliott. At the 40 he does not get out
- 1:15:02of bounds or maybe he does on a far side of the field at about the 38 yard line after
- 1:15:07a gain of only a couple of yards. Dan White, the linebacker over on that side.
- 1:15:12Elliott was the release man. He got two on the plate of the 38 that did stop the clock
- 1:15:17as he got out of bounds and that will bring up a second and eight. The Colts secondary
- 1:15:21course will be playing it very deep and very loosely as they want to cut off the long one.
- 1:15:25But the Bengals with an opportunity to make use of the clock, the sidelines and two time
- 1:15:29outs remaining. They'd like to move that ball down and at the very worst come out of it
- 1:15:34and they'll have to go to the field goal before the first half ends. They're at the Colts 38.
- 1:15:38Brooks goes left, right side comes Curtis.
- 1:15:42Anderson with the ball, rolls out to his right. Look, now he's going to run, he's going to be dropped
- 1:15:47at the 39 yard line. He was just dropped over there by Brett Cook.
- 1:15:52Rolled out to his right and look, but there was no one there.
- 1:15:58Now the Bengals will go without benefit of huddle.
- 1:16:02The clock has stopped while they wait for the Baltimore players to get back.
- 1:16:07It stopped at 117. Now the Bengals will have a third and eight.
- 1:16:12Anderson back to throw. Look, steps up in the pocket.
- 1:16:17Now he's going to the far side of the field. He's down to the 40. Faces at the 35.
- 1:16:22Knocked down right there at the 35 yard line and he was really knocked down hard.
- 1:16:26I don't know if Anderson is going to get up or not. He was hurt. Then he tried to pick up that extra yard.
- 1:16:32Stan White, the linebacker, really drilled him over there and Anderson was down flat on the ground.
- 1:16:37Like he took a bump in the chest.
- 1:16:42It's 59 seconds as the clock has stopped. The Bengals will have a fourth and about five.
- 1:16:53Chris Barr is going in for a field goal attempt. Barr is in there.
- 1:16:56It is fourth down with 59 seconds left. Anderson's still being administered to on the far side of the field.
- 1:17:02I think that he had the wind knocked out and he got a real shot in the chest.
- 1:17:07He may have a little trouble breathing or bringing out a stretcher.
- 1:17:12Now he's getting up to his feet, I believe.
- 1:17:20He may have caught that shot by Stan White, that forearm in the neck. Now Anderson is up to his feet.
- 1:17:26Very groggy, however. Walking off under his own par, I think he had the breath knocked out of him.
- 1:17:33Ron Hunt and Bruce Coslitt helping him off the field.
- 1:17:38He may have taken a shot in the throat, Bill, when he came around, it was almost like a neck-tie tackle.
- 1:17:42Yeah, because you went right straight backwards. So it will be a field goal attempt of some 52 yards if Barr misses it.
- 1:17:48The Baltimore Colts are going to have a pretty good field position.
- 1:17:52The ball will be spotted down in the dirt by Cobb at the 42.
- 1:17:57All right, the lines are down. The ball is snapped. There's the kick. It is plenty long.
- 1:18:01And is it good? Chris Barr drills it from 52 yards out. And oh, did he kick that ball. That would have been good from 60.
- 1:18:10Chris Barr with a 52-yard field goal. He is 2 for 2 in the afternoon.
- 1:18:16But now it gives the Baltimore Colts time to make use of the clock. 55 seconds are left.
- 1:18:21And Barr will kick it. He said 51 officially. That was 52, wasn't it?
- 1:18:26It looked more like 52 to me.
- 1:18:2851 is the official yardage, but that makes the score 20 to 14 Bengals now.
- 1:18:32It doesn't make any difference whether it's 51 or 52. It still adds three points on the scoreboard.
- 1:18:36So Chris Barr sets the kickoff. And Stevens, the deep man, are going to let this one bounce along.
- 1:18:40It bounces in. I have the Stevens. He catches it and rolls back into the end zone.
- 1:18:45He's going to down it back there so it will come back out to the 20.
- 1:18:49That took about eight seconds off the clock. They've got 51 left. They'll have it at the 20.
- 1:18:53That ball bounced along the ground. A Colt touched it.
- 1:18:56And Stevens tried to scoop it up at about the three-yard line.
- 1:18:59But the ball went back into the end zone. It was down for a save.
- 1:19:02Some of you may wonder why it was not a free ball. Why he wouldn't have to run it.
- 1:19:05Nobody had possession of it. It was just a muff, not a fumble.
- 1:19:08The rules of a fumble do not pertain. So the Colts will start at their own 20 with a first and tenth.
- 1:19:14And they'll get a lot of plays runoff here in the final 51 seconds.
- 1:19:18Twenty to 14 Bengals now as Chris Barr really drilled that field goal.
- 1:19:23He's hit two of them, 26 and 52.
- 1:19:29Doughty comes in motion on the near side. A handoff. It's Leakes trying left side.
- 1:19:33He's got a yard. And that's all as he tried left tackle.
- 1:19:36He was really wrapped up by Glenn Cameron, who's in there at a linebacker's spot now.
- 1:19:42That was Lydell Mitchell trying to run and he got nothing at all.
- 1:19:45He thought the Bengals might be looking for paths and they could toss him up with a run.
- 1:19:48But it's a 21 to become second and nine. And the Colts are making no effort to stop the clock.
- 1:19:53Twenty-eight seconds of time left here in the first half.
- 1:19:56Kenny Anderson is seated next to Dr. George Ballou on the far side of the field now,
- 1:20:00drinking a glass of water, shaking his head occasionally, but he appears to be all right.
- 1:20:04The Bengals have four linebackers in there and three defensive linemen.
- 1:20:08The clock down to 13. Steve Jones will elect to put it up in the air here in the last gas effort in this first half.
- 1:20:15No he's not. He's going to hand off the Lydell Mitchell, who breaks up to about the 29-yard line
- 1:20:19before he's hauled down by Koi Bacon. And that will bring the first half to an end.
- 1:20:24Once again our score at halftime here at Memorial Stadium is the Bengals 20 and the Colts 14.
- 1:20:31Bill Samp and Jimmy Crumb back at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 1:20:34The Bengals will kick off to start the second half.
- 1:20:36They'll be going left to right as we look here at the stadium.
- 1:20:39Kenny Anderson came back out onto the field with his teammates here in the second half.
- 1:20:43John Reese has been warming up.
- 1:20:45Bill will have to wait and see whether Anderson plays or not.
- 1:20:47So Chris Ballou drilled that 52-yard field goal just before intermission.
- 1:20:51Gets set to kick off. There's the kick.
- 1:20:53At the high line it'll come to Howard Stevens, a yard deep in the end zone.
- 1:20:57Comes out to the 10, to the 15. Gets up to about the 20, 22, 23-yard line as Scott Perry rides him down.
- 1:21:05Also in on to slow him up, Reggie Williams was over there.
- 1:21:09Along with Willie Shelby and Scott Perry finally dump Stevens at the 23-yard line and the Colts go from there.
- 1:21:17Bengals lead it 20 to 14.
- 1:21:19The difference in the ball game has been the two field goals by Chris Barr.
- 1:21:23Bert Jones in the first half of the ball game threw two touchdown passes.
- 1:21:30He was 9 for 18 and he had two intercepted.
- 1:21:34So ready to go. They have Glenn Doughty and Roger Carr out wide.
- 1:21:38The backs are in at eye. Now Doughty goes in motion.
- 1:21:40Handoff into the line, getting a little running room and coming out to about the 28-yard line as Lydell Mitchell went around the right side and cut back in.
- 1:21:48Bob Brown hauled him down. He gained about 5 on the play.
- 1:21:51The Colts running game in the first half was pretty well restricted.
- 1:21:55They had just 47 yards. The Bengals on the other hand gained 102.
- 1:22:01So it's a 5-yard gain by Lydell Mitchell on the first play and it will be second and five.
- 1:22:07Bengals defensive unit the same.
- 1:22:09Colts bring Doughty to the near side. To the far side goes Carr.
- 1:22:13Leakes and Mitchell running backs. Bert Jones is quarterback.
- 1:22:16Again Doughty comes in motion to the line and no farther.
- 1:22:19Into the line goes Leakes and he ran into a stone wall led by Bob Brown who hit him first.
- 1:22:24Really slowed him up and you could hear those shoulder pads hit all the way up here.
- 1:22:28Right away quickly in on top of it were Pritchard and LeClaire.
- 1:22:32Put Leakes down after a 1-yard gain and he was put down very, very roughly.
- 1:22:36So now McCauley goes in to replace Leakes as the Colts look at a third and four.
- 1:22:42Bengals lead at 20 to 14. We're just into the third quarter of play.
- 1:22:49The backs are split behind Jones. They like to send those backs out.
- 1:22:53Jones goes back to throw. Fires upfield.
- 1:22:55He's got us a 35-yard line by Leitell Mitchell and he's down right there but that isn't up for the first down.
- 1:23:02Bo Harris was over there so were Jim LeClaire.
- 1:23:05But Bert Jones really drilled that ball.
- 1:23:08It's a gain of six and the Colts have the first down and retain possession.
- 1:23:12I was watching Bert Jones during his pregame warm-up particularly when we were down on the field
- 1:23:16and he was talking with Tommy Casanova.
- 1:23:19He had one of the assistant coaches down there that he was throwing to and he can really put the mustard on that thing.
- 1:23:23He fires it and it's like a 30-30 rifle show coming out of there.
- 1:23:26Now ironically the Bengals' first touchdown game when Casanova intercepted one by Jones
- 1:23:30and ran it back 31 yards for a touchdown.
- 1:23:33Colts with their own 35 come out of the double wing.
- 1:23:35Bert Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:23:37Look, fires a quick out that is tipped. Incomplete.
- 1:23:41Receiver almost got to a dowdy and a man who tipped it up in the air back there was Bo Harris
- 1:23:46and it popped up in the air.
- 1:23:47Curries went for it so did Dowdy but it fell incomplete.
- 1:23:50Good defensive play by Bo Harris who had really dropped back deep about 20 yards downfield.
- 1:23:56So with the 35 now back in Colts territory it becomes second and tenth.
- 1:24:01Bengals lead it 20 to 14.
- 1:24:03We're just into the third quarter of play, two minutes and ten seconds of a laugh.
- 1:24:08Throughout the first half Jones had excellent protection
- 1:24:11and he got excellent protection as he waited a while to throw that one.
- 1:24:18Again Carr goes right, Dowdy comes to the near side.
- 1:24:23Second and tenth, Colts with their own 35.
- 1:24:25They're out in the dust part of the diamond.
- 1:24:27Back to throw, the blitz is on.
- 1:24:28Fires a quick pass, the hook is caught by Carr.
- 1:24:31He's at the 40.
- 1:24:32At the 35, the 30 is out in the middle of the field.
- 1:24:35He'll go all the way.
- 1:24:36Casanova hits it and gets into the touchdown.
- 1:24:39The third touchdown passed to Carr.
- 1:24:41He took that hook right out at the 40 yard line
- 1:24:44and the next left the rest of the 40 yards to score on a 65 yard pass play.
- 1:24:51Byrd Jones all the way down there to congratulate him.
- 1:24:54The Bengals have the blitz on.
- 1:24:55There weren't any linebackers there.
- 1:24:57The third touchdown passed for the afternoon from Jones to Carr.
- 1:25:01And quickly on the first period the Colts have tied it up
- 1:25:04and can take the lead now on Tony Lenhart's extra point.
- 1:25:08There was nobody to have much of a chance after he caught that ball out at the 40.
- 1:25:11That middle area was wide open.
- 1:25:13Casanova and Jackson gave the chance but they couldn't get to it.
- 1:25:17So Truffaut and Lenhart will attempt the extra point.
- 1:25:21All is placed.
- 1:25:22The kick is up in the air and it is good.
- 1:25:25So there's time out on the field.
- 1:25:26The score is now the Colts 21 and the Bengals 20.
- 1:25:32Boys, what do you think you'd like to be when you grow up?
- 1:25:36Daddy, when I grow up, I want to be like you. I want to be a man of my own.
- 1:25:43Now that's an interesting idea.
- 1:25:45Daddy, when I grow up, I want to do what you do. I want to be a man of my own.
- 1:25:52Now I'm flattered by that.
- 1:25:54A man of my own makes you living.
- 1:25:57You're worth the best you can.
- 1:26:00Well, you're right about that boys.
- 1:26:02The Marathon Man, of which I have to be one, does make you living doing his work.
- 1:26:06So if you like hard work and long hours, why don't you just come on down to the station and I'll start breaking you boys in.
- 1:26:11But before I do, tell me again how Marathon Man makes you living.
- 1:26:15How Marathon Man makes you living.
- 1:26:18Uh huh.
- 1:26:20Come on, let's begin.
- 1:26:21The answer is nothing more gratifying than hard work is your boys.
- 1:26:25Uh, Morris? That's right.
- 1:26:32Roger Carr, the third year man out of Louisiana Tech, is really having himself an afternoon.
- 1:26:40He now has six receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
- 1:26:47He ran 40 yards right down the middle after he caught that one.
- 1:26:51It appears that John Reeves is going to play. He has the helmet on. Kenny Anderson is standing over there by Coach Bill Johnson.
- 1:26:58But Linhardt will kick off and the deep men are Shelby and Elliott.
- 1:27:01The Bengals trail again, 21 to 20. The Colts grab the 7-0 lead.
- 1:27:05The Bengals came back to tie it up and have led since that time.
- 1:27:08Linhardt has a strange approach to that ball. He puts it high in the air. It'll be Elliott taking it at the free.
- 1:27:13Lin goes straight up to the 15 to the 20. Gets to about the 25 yard line and that's all.
- 1:27:19He got a good smack right over there and went down. Hit hard by Ray Oldham.
- 1:27:23The Bengals will be starting out at their own 25.
- 1:27:26But John Reeves taking over his quarterback for Ken Anderson, who is really shaken up on a jarring tackle by Stan White near the end of the first half.
- 1:27:35And Anderson either has a mighty sore chest, collarbone, or perhaps neck.
- 1:27:40A lot of crowd really buzzing here as the Colts have taken a 21 to 20 lead.
- 1:27:46The Colts go left. To the near side comes Curtis.
- 1:27:49Ritz the shallow man, Griffin the deep man in the eye.
- 1:27:52John Reeves is the quarterback. First time in two regular season games now that Reeves has played.
- 1:27:57Back to throw. Sets up a screen to Griffin on the far side.
- 1:28:00Archie is up to the 29 to the 30 yard line maybe and that's about all.
- 1:28:04Jim Schiensky, the middle linebacker, over there to make the stop.
- 1:28:07It's a five yard gain and the screen pass left to Griffin.
- 1:28:12The Bengals will have a second and five. Schiensky was there and had a couple of helpers.
- 1:28:18As they started out about at the 26, make it a four yard gain and call it second and six.
- 1:28:24The Colts crowd has really come to life as the Colts just took two minutes and 11 seconds to score.
- 1:28:30Curtis fireside, near side, Brooks. Back split this time behind Reeves.
- 1:28:35Second and six.
- 1:28:37Reeves on a long count. Takes the ball, goes back to throw.
- 1:28:40Fires out on the flat. A flag is down. Brooks catches it and goes out of bounds at the 41.
- 1:28:46Lloyd Mumford was over there covering and pushed him out.
- 1:28:49The flag was thrown in the Bengals backfield. Now the officials will gather to talk it over.
- 1:28:57Illegal procedure against the Bengals.
- 1:29:01Nobody had moved. They may not have had seven men up on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:29:05So it nullifies that gainer out to about the 40 yard line and the penalty will move it back to the 25 and it will become second and 11.
- 1:29:15That's the third illegal procedure penalty the Bengals have had on the afternoon.
- 1:29:19John Shinners comes in with a play.
- 1:29:24The announcement that Roger Carr has tied a Colts touchdown record with his free touchdown pass.
- 1:29:32The Bengals have scored on Casanova's interception, a pass from Anderson to Trumpy and two crisp-fire field goals.
- 1:29:38Now the Bengals look at a second and 11. They have Brooks and Curtis split.
- 1:29:43Cornerback's about seven yards off that line of scrimmage.
- 1:29:47Straight back to throw and Reeves now fires upfield.
- 1:29:50Fritz has it at the 30. The 35 is up to the 40 and gets to about the 44 yard line before Darrell Luce.
- 1:29:57The linebacker over on that side can haul him down.
- 1:29:59Fritz with the safety valve. As Reeves dropped back he just dumped it straight up over the line and Fritz ran it all the way back out to the 44, a 19 yard gain and a first down.
- 1:30:09Kenny Anderson shaken up near the end of the first half.
- 1:30:12He is over on the fire sideline but John Reeves is taking over the quarterbacking duties.
- 1:30:17Reeves did it a couple of times last year.
- 1:30:19Led the Bengals to a win in the game against Houston when Anderson was sidelined.
- 1:30:23Now slot formation left with Curtis in the slot. The back split behind Reeves.
- 1:30:29Hand off, Griffin runs into his own block or Shinners who is pulling and is knocked down behind the line of scrimmage and then quickly bounced down by a coach to down him.
- 1:30:38But he ran into Shinners and it's going to be a loft of a couple of yards on the play back to the 42.
- 1:30:43Shinners was pulling out to come out and pick a man up wide or Buzhnak and Archie either got there too quick or Buzhnak didn't get away quick enough because it's a loft of two and now it will be second and 12.
- 1:30:59Colts played it 21-20 here in the third quarter. We played about four and a half minutes.
- 1:31:05Curtis far side, Brooks split nearside.
- 1:31:09And a Colts expecting pass here on second and 12. Reeves goes back to throw.
- 1:31:14Still looking, fires downfield. Oh, Brooks who was open down at about the 35 yard line.
- 1:31:20Brooks stopped to come back and Reeves taking plenty of time over through him.
- 1:31:24Two Colts were trying quickly to get back there. He really had him but Reeves overthrew him.
- 1:31:30So it comes back to the 42 and it becomes third and 12.
- 1:31:35He had to step that time in fact two or three steps on both Lloyd Mumford number 42 and on Darrell Luce the linebacker number 58 and those were two men who were trying to get back to cover when they saw that Brooks was loose.
- 1:31:48Brooks is hooked and stopped. Now Pittsburgh leads Cleveland 24-14 in the fourth quarter.
- 1:31:53Third and 12. Bengals at their own 42.
- 1:31:57Colts leave it up to that front four and drop everybody else back in that zone.
- 1:32:02Reeves back to throw as Reeves. He's hit from behind and dragged down by John Dutton.
- 1:32:06He's circled around from his right end spot. He can't wait forever.
- 1:32:10Nobody got open downfield. Reeves finally was pinned down by Dutton.
- 1:32:14First time a Bengals quarterback has been sacked this afternoon.
- 1:32:17It's back at the 34 for a loss of eight and that will bring Pat McAnally into punt.
- 1:32:23McAnally did not punt particularly well in the first half of the ballgame. Two punts for just 35 yards.
- 1:32:29Now's the time when you really need a boomer.
- 1:32:32Macaulay Laird of the shallow men, Howard Stevens the deep man. The line of scrimmage is the 34.
- 1:32:38McAnally gets off a terrible boot right off the side of his foot.
- 1:32:42It will bounce at the Colts 40 and then dribbles down to the 38.
- 1:32:47They thought it was out of bounds at the 43. A miserable punt by McAnally and the Colts have excellent field position.
- 1:32:53Time out of the field. Score, Colts 21, Bengals 20.
- 1:32:59Okay now, Ann Ellen, get in just a little closer. I can't see you.
- 1:33:03I hate to have my picture taken.
- 1:33:06Okay now, everybody smile.
- 1:33:08You got any film in that camera?
- 1:33:10I've got any. Oh, I'm out of film.
- 1:33:14Now wait a minute. Everybody stay put. I'll pick up some film at convenience. Be right back.
- 1:33:20When you need something in a hurry, you can depend on Convenience Food Mart to make life a little more convenient.
- 1:33:25We make life a little more convenient.
- 1:33:29Driving a car is a lot easier if you know you have a service station you can rely on.
- 1:33:35Polymer Zephyr Service Station is that station.
- 1:33:38They're located across from Henderson County Middle School and they're open 24 hours a day except Sunday nights.
- 1:33:43Jimmy Triplett and Charlie Kane are co-managers and they believe in service.
- 1:33:48They'll clean your windshield and check your oil every time.
- 1:33:51Polymer Zephyr Station, across from Henderson County Middle School.
- 1:33:54Union Center will be there, even if you're not.
- 1:33:59The report from the Cincinnati Panthers is that Kenny Anderson was only shaken up.
- 1:34:07He could have come back into play, but the Cincinnati Brain Trust decided that John Reeves would come in and do it.
- 1:34:14So the Colts start at the 37 after only a 28-yard boot by McInerley.
- 1:34:19Bert Jones hands off Lydell Mitchell on a sweep to the right.
- 1:34:22He's going to get a couple of yards and that's about all, maybe not even that much.
- 1:34:26Over there quickly Bob Brown.
- 1:34:28Brown's training to play over there and Brown gets up with that infield dirt all over his uniform.
- 1:34:33It's a gain of only a yard on the play.
- 1:34:36And the Bengals are really restricted, the Colts running game, to...
- 1:34:43Philadelphia 28-7 over the Giants at the final and here's a real surprise.
- 1:34:47In the fourth quarter, the New England Patriots now lead the Miami Dolphins 30-14.
- 1:34:52Pittsburgh Senors lead Cleveland 24-14 in the fourth quarter.
- 1:34:57Colts are second and 9 for the Colts at the 38.
- 1:35:00They bring out Roger Carr to the left, bring Doughty out to the right.
- 1:35:03Backs in an eye.
- 1:35:05Hand off the flag on the play. Doughty was going forward.
- 1:35:08Bunging straight up the middle of the ball is Lydell Mitchell.
- 1:35:11Doughty was going forward toward the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.
- 1:35:17No, they decided to bring him out in motion or what, but he forgot momentarily what the situation should be.
- 1:35:23And it's an illegal motion against the Baltimore Colts.
- 1:35:26That'll cost them five and move them back to the 33 and it'll be second and 14.
- 1:35:34Kenny Anderson is standing over the sidelines.
- 1:35:36The report was he was just shaken up.
- 1:35:38John Reeves to start of the second half and of course we don't know if Anderson will play or not.
- 1:35:53The scull against Glenn Doughty as we said.
- 1:35:56So it'll be second and 14 for the Colts back at the 33.
- 1:36:04And it's out with eight minutes 58 seconds to go here in the third quarter at Baltimore.
- 1:36:08The Colts lead the Bengals by 1.21 to 20.
- 1:36:11Now the backs are split in the second and 14 situation.
- 1:36:14Bert Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:36:16Looks, fires down the middle.
- 1:36:18Doughty can't hold on to it down at the Bengals 43.
- 1:36:22He did a deep flat in.
- 1:36:24Kenny Roddy was covering him there.
- 1:36:26Doughty discussed it with himself.
- 1:36:28He had his hands on the ball down about knee high but could not hold on to it.
- 1:36:31So again Bert Jones had ample protection.
- 1:36:34And it comes back to the 33 and now it'll be third and 14.
- 1:36:41You know that LA takes on Minnesota in just a few minutes.
- 1:36:44Well that game should get underway.
- 1:36:46Jim Marshall will tie George Bland's record of having competed in 224 straight games.
- 1:36:52He has not missed a game for 17 years.
- 1:36:55That is an amazing guy.
- 1:36:56Ron Carpenter has gone out this time and Bill Kohler has replaced him.
- 1:36:59So Bob Brown stays in.
- 1:37:01Bert Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:37:03He's going to be pushed out of the pocket this time.
- 1:37:05Running upfield looks and is knocked down way back at the 23 yard line by Kenny Johnson.
- 1:37:10He got him from behind and Bert Jones is shaken up a little bit now.
- 1:37:14Kenny Johnson hit Jones from behind.
- 1:37:16He came down back at about the 23.
- 1:37:19So Jones is gingerly up on his feet.
- 1:37:22So David Lee will go into boot.
- 1:37:23It's a loss of 10 in the play.
- 1:37:25He's running away from Kenny Johnson.
- 1:37:27But Johnson circling around from behind got him.
- 1:37:29Just when it looked as though he might want to unload that ball and throw it.
- 1:37:36So David Lee will boot to Willie Shelby and Lamar Perrys with Marvin Cobb the short man.
- 1:37:41Both lead at 21-20.
- 1:37:43We're still not quite midway through this third period.
- 1:37:45There's the snap back to Lee.
- 1:37:47Gets the kick away.
- 1:37:49This one is not particularly long.
- 1:37:51Let it bounce at the Bengals 45 yard line.
- 1:37:54It just dropped dead right about there.
- 1:37:55Rolls down to maybe the 43.
- 1:37:57Marvin Cobb really hustled to get out of the way.
- 1:37:59Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 1:38:02This is the Cincinnati Bengals football network.
- 1:38:05And you're listening to exciting Cincinnati Bengals football right here on Radio 86, WSO and Henderson.
- 1:38:12Your spot for sports.
- 1:38:22Bengals have a first and Channiser own 43.
- 1:38:24Reeves and a quarterback again.
- 1:38:26Brooks and Curtis both split.
- 1:38:29Curtis goes in motion to the line of scrimmage and stops.
- 1:38:32The handoff, Glenville Elliott around the outside gets to the 45.
- 1:38:35A knockdown in the front of the Colts bench at about the 47 yard line.
- 1:38:40Curtis in motion on that side toward the line of scrimmage.
- 1:38:44Stopped of course and the ball was snapped.
- 1:38:46And then he's one of the blockers on that side.
- 1:38:48Glenville Elliott got it out to the 48 yard line.
- 1:38:50It's a game of about five.
- 1:38:51Joe Herman was the man who got over to finally knock Elliott down.
- 1:38:55And it's second and five.
- 1:38:57In the first half of the ball game, Archie Griffin carried six times for 17 yards.
- 1:39:02Mitchell was the leading ball carrier for Baltimore, nine carries for 40.
- 1:39:06But they only had seven other yards rushing in addition to those 40.
- 1:39:10The Bengals were the second and five at their own 48.
- 1:39:13Slot formation, both wide men to the left.
- 1:39:15Reeves fakes the handoff, goes back to throw, fires down the middle.
- 1:39:19Incomplete.
- 1:39:22It was intended down there for Curtis.
- 1:39:24Jackie Wallace came up in the safety spot, almost intercepted the ball.
- 1:39:29Got there about the same time as Curtis did.
- 1:39:31A good play.
- 1:39:32The ball is going to have to be a little thrown a little bit quicker just as Curtis makes his cut.
- 1:39:36Throw up to 48.
- 1:39:38It will become third and five.
- 1:39:40Wallace, who intercepted three passes last week against New England,
- 1:39:44came out of that confrontation holding his both hands in the air, shaking his head.
- 1:39:47But he thought he should have had it.
- 1:39:52Goslund and Myers have gone into the ball game now.
- 1:39:55The Bengals go with a couple of tight ends.
- 1:39:59Reeves back to throw, fires down field.
- 1:40:02It's incomplete.
- 1:40:03Reeves was hit just as he unloaded that ball.
- 1:40:05It went away from the intended receiver.
- 1:40:07Joe Erman hit him just as he got rid of the ball.
- 1:40:10And the coach defensive unit has stopped the Bengals again.
- 1:40:13And McInerney will have to go into the booth.
- 1:40:15Coach leads 21-20.
- 1:40:17We've got 8-09 left here in the third period.
- 1:40:25There's a lot of yardage gained by both clubs in that first half.
- 1:40:28Bengals have 237 and the Colts have 211.
- 1:40:33So McInerney coming off just a poor 28-yard booth will try again.
- 1:40:37There's the snap.
- 1:40:38This is a good high spiral over charge the far side of the field.
- 1:40:41Stevens will let it bounce and it goes out of bounds at about the 5-yard line.
- 1:40:45Kicked it away from Stevens.
- 1:40:47That was the beauty.
- 1:40:4847 yards out of bounds on the 5.
- 1:40:50Time out on the field.
- 1:40:51Score, Coach, 21 Bengals, 20.
- 1:40:55Right now is a great time to see your Chevy dealer
- 1:40:58because right now a lot of Chevrolet dealers are having their garage sale on 1976 Chevrolets.

- 1:41:46it's that get a great deal on a Chevy time of year.
- 1:41:49So see your Chevy dealer for a great deal on a brand new 1976 Chevrolet.
- 1:41:55And do it today.
- 1:41:59Three games in the National Conference are now final.
- 1:42:02The Washington Redskins meet the Seattle Seahawks 31 to 7.
- 1:42:06The Philadelphia Eagles over the New York Giants 20 to 7.
- 1:42:09And the Detroit Lions down the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 24 to 10.
- 1:42:15That's the ninth straight win for Detroit over Atlanta.
- 1:42:18Oh, the Colts will be starting out at their own five yard line now.
- 1:42:21Bert Jones who is shaken up slightly on their last series is in there.
- 1:42:25Hand off is Lydell Mitchell over right tackle.
- 1:42:27He's got about four as he comes out of the nine yard line.
- 1:42:30He's down, dragged him down.
- 1:42:35Long I believe with Carpenter.
- 1:42:37Got it out to about the nine yard line so it will be second and six.
- 1:42:43The Bengals will be home next Sunday to play the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:42:48Two weeks from today they'll be at Cleveland to take on the Browns
- 1:42:51who are putting up a stubborn battle this afternoon against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:42:55Steelers led 17-14 in the third quarter or fourth quarter.
- 1:42:59Two and six Colts at their own nine.
- 1:43:03Hand off again as Lydell Mitchell tries to tiptoe his way in
- 1:43:06and he gets to the 10 yard line through the right side and that's about all.
- 1:43:10All kinds of Bengals are around there to greet him.
- 1:43:12Bob Brown, Ron Carpenter, three or four others.
- 1:43:17Kenny Johnson the left end.
- 1:43:20Gain out to the 12 yard line.
- 1:43:23Got three in the play so bring up the third down and three yards to go for the first down.
- 1:43:27And the team the Bengals face next Sunday back at Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:43:30The Green Bay Packers in the third quarter this afternoon
- 1:43:33are losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 12 to nothing.
- 1:43:37O'Car has been the real thorn in the side of the Bengals.
- 1:43:39Comes out to the near side. The far side is Dowdy.
- 1:43:42Third and three. Jones with the ball back to throw.
- 1:43:45Looks, fires out in the flat. Intercepted by Pritchard.
- 1:43:49He has him and is out of bounds at about the 10 yard line.
- 1:43:51Cut right in front of Glenn Dowdy and picked off that pass.
- 1:43:55Ron Pritchard really picked up Dowdy swinging out into that
- 1:43:59or Lydell Mitchell swinging out into that left flat
- 1:44:02and just stepped right in front of it.
- 1:44:03The 14 yard line and picked it away.
- 1:44:05And the Bengals are in superb field condition.
- 1:44:08What more can you say? Great play by Pritchard who really hugged Mitchell.
- 1:44:18So a great turn of events.
- 1:44:19Wondering if on third and three if the Colts would try to pass.
- 1:44:22They did and that's the third one that's been intercepted.
- 1:44:25Both wide men to the right side.
- 1:44:28John Reeves the quarterback. Gives it off to Fritz.
- 1:44:31Fritz head down. Fights his way down maybe to the 11 for about
- 1:44:34three hard-pawed yards through the right side.
- 1:44:37Ran right over Lapham and Holland on that right side.
- 1:44:40There were all kinds of Colts around in on the tackle.
- 1:44:42Last man up off the stack is Mike Barnes who is the left tackle.
- 1:44:46Putting the ball down just shy of the 11 yard line it will be second and seven.
- 1:44:52Bengals trail by one. 21 to 20.
- 1:44:57Here on the third quarter we're just a little over halfway through.
- 1:45:01Chip Myers swings out wide to the left.
- 1:45:02He's replaced Bill Brooks like Curtis comes out to the right.
- 1:45:06Strong side right formation. The back split in behind Reeves.
- 1:45:12Fritz up the middle. Fights his way down to the eighth.
- 1:45:16Has he got about three more yards.
- 1:45:18Joe Erman the right tackle was the man who made the stop on Fritz down at the eighth.
- 1:45:23And now it'll bring up the third down and about four yards to go for the first down.
- 1:45:30Oh they put the ball right down at the nine yard line.
- 1:45:33So make a third down now and about five yards to go for the first down.
- 1:45:37And this is where those yards become extremely difficult to get.
- 1:45:40They're high up there trying to get them inside, outside, through the air.
- 1:45:43They're all tough to get.
- 1:45:46Full crowd noisy down at that end of the field.
- 1:45:48See if the Bengals can go to the air and try and get the touchdown.
- 1:45:51John Reeves goes back to throw.
- 1:45:53Fires down at the two yard line.
- 1:45:55Is complete and going out of the end zone for the touchdown is Linville Elliott who came out of the back field.
- 1:46:01Jim Schiaenski was there to drag him down.
- 1:46:03But Reeves hit Elliott for a nine yard touchdown pass and that puts the Bengals out on top again.
- 1:46:08Now by a score of 26 to 21.
- 1:46:11And Jim I certainly didn't expect it to be an offensive battle like this.
- 1:46:14Two good defensive ball clubs.
- 1:46:17But we've had a lot of points scored.
- 1:46:18Yes we have.
- 1:46:19And we still have 15, 20, we still have 20 minutes and 11 seconds to go.
- 1:46:24Five minutes, 11 seconds this period.
- 1:46:2615 minutes in the fourth period.
- 1:46:28Fitchers interception set it up at the 14.
- 1:46:32There's the extra point at 10 by a bar.
- 1:46:34It is up and it's right on through.
- 1:46:35So there's time out on the field.
- 1:46:37Score now Bengals 27, Nicole's 21.
- 1:46:40Music.
- 1:46:46Corkscrews Deli is the delicatessen in downtown Henderson with delicious meat, cheeses, salads and desserts.
- 1:46:51And now Corkscrews Deli is serving beer.
- 1:46:53That's right, good cold beer.
- 1:46:55There are many sandwiches to choose from.
- 1:46:57Roast beef, corned beef, ham, pastrami, turkey, salami, pepper beef, kielbasa, all beef bologna, all beef kosher hot dogs,
- 1:47:06cheese and crackers, ruben or hoagie.
- 1:47:09Add one of seven different cheeses to your sandwich and enjoy it on your own choice of bread.
- 1:47:14There are four different breads too, plus bagels.
- 1:47:17Corkscrews Deli has soup and salads also, plus party trays and catering service.
- 1:47:23Eat in or carry out at Corkscrews Deli.
- 1:47:25They're open Monday through Thursday from 11 to 6, Friday 11 to 8 and Saturday 11 to 4.
- 1:47:31Enjoy real delicatessen food at Corkscrews Deli.
- 1:47:35103 North Main and downtown Henderson.
- 1:47:38Music.
- 1:47:45Chris Barr kicked that ball about four yards deep into the end zone and Bruce Laird elected not to return it, so it comes out to the 20.
- 1:47:53And the Colts who score just two minutes and 11 seconds into this third period now find themselves trailing 27 to 21.
- 1:48:00Double wing back formation, Jones rolling out to his right, goes back to throw, fires up field, incomplete and almost intercepted again.
- 1:48:15Abengal was the closest man to it as one of the linebackers.
- 1:48:18Let's see which one it is, Bo Harris.
- 1:48:20And that ball may have hit Harris so hard in the numbers that it about obliterated him because it was right into his chest.
- 1:48:25Another former LSU man going after Burt Jones passes.
- 1:48:30It's like old home week out there with Tommy Casanova and Burt Jones and Bo Harris.
- 1:48:38But all that camaraderie that may exist between these players before the game is forgotten once that whistle blows.
- 1:48:44Raymond Chester, the tight end, probably was the intended pass receiver.
- 1:48:48Doughty goes out to the right side now and Roger Carr comes left.
- 1:48:51Abengal's back on top, 27-21, Burt Jones back to throw. Out on the flat, it's incomplete.
- 1:48:57Tended out there for Lydell Mitchell and Kenny Anderson really cut it, or rather Kenny Riley really cut his legs out from under him.
- 1:49:04Lydell Mitchell a little slow getting up.
- 1:49:07But he's up on his feet. That pass was way high and that really leaves the pass receiver in a most vulnerable position when he goes high up into the air.
- 1:49:16And Riley just undercut him and knocked him flat.
- 1:49:19Back at the 20 now quickly it becomes third and 10.
- 1:49:23Ron Pritchard's interception, set it up at the 14-yard line and on a third and five play, John Reeves hit Lenville Elliott.
- 1:49:34So again Burt Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:49:37Looks, fires up, built, it's incomplete.
- 1:49:40Intended for Carr, who is running toward the sidelines at about the 42.
- 1:49:44Richard had dropped back to cover him and Kenny Riley was over there too so they were giving Roger Carr double coverage on that one.
- 1:49:51But the Bengals stop him three times back at the 20 and now David Lee will have to boot.
- 1:49:55You don't think of a linebacker being able to move quite that swift but Ron Pritchard and Ken Riley both, particularly Pritchard was step-for-step with Carr that time.
- 1:50:05Riley was pretty much one-on-one with him on the first half and Carr caught a couple.
- 1:50:09Let's see if the Bengals continue to do that.
- 1:50:11Shelby and Parish are the deep men. A snap is high but Lee jumps and comes down with it.
- 1:50:15And then gets off a good driving spiral.
- 1:50:18Parish will take the Bengals 28, he's up to the 30.
- 1:50:21He loosed a couple of men and goes down at about the 38.
- 1:50:24And a Bengal player is hurting down on the field.
- 1:50:28Reggie Williams, but he's getting up and Reggie was shaken up on that play.
- 1:50:33Forrest Blue, down there to make the stop but the Bengals have good field position out at their 39.
- 1:50:38David Lee really had to jump to get that high pass from center.
- 1:50:42But then he really drilled the ball all the way back to the Bengals 29.
- 1:50:46That was about a 51-yard boot.
- 1:50:48Bengals lead at 27-21 in one whale of a football game here at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 1:50:56Gellied and Pritz are the running backs and Brooks and Curtis are split.
- 1:51:01Now Curtis comes in motion.
- 1:51:03And off into the line goes Pritz and he fights his way forward for about three or four yards and his stop standing up.
- 1:51:08And pushed back by Fred Cook.
- 1:51:11But his penetration carried him up over the 41 to perhaps the 42-yard line.
- 1:51:15A gain of about three as he sliced in between guard and right tackle.
- 1:51:19At the 41 a couple of yards, then little bit second and eighth.
- 1:51:23Three games are now final in the AFC.
- 1:51:25The Pittsburgh Steelers 31, Cleveland Browns 14, the Oilers over the Buffalo Bills 13-3.
- 1:51:31And the San Diego Chargers blank the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23 to nothing.
- 1:51:36A slot formation right.
- 1:51:38Brooks wide, Curtis in the slot.
- 1:51:39Bengals with a second and eighth at their own 41.
- 1:51:42Reeves fakes and goes back to thrill.
- 1:51:44Looks now is going to be hit.
- 1:51:46Too long again going downfield.
- 1:51:48Curtis and Brooks were both covered.
- 1:51:50Nailed by Joe Erman back at the 34-yard line for a loss of seven.
- 1:51:54Reeves have time and time and a little more time.
- 1:51:57But finally it closed down.
- 1:51:59They're going to be at the 35-yard line and that is about the fifth time this afternoon
- 1:52:03the Bengals quarterbacks have been dropped.
- 1:52:05So it will bring up a third down situation now and about 14 yards to go.
- 1:52:10Final score, Houston 15, Buffalo 3.
- 1:52:14In the third quarter, Dallas 24, Lawrence nothing.
- 1:52:20The Bengals go with three wide receivers now, only one running back.
- 1:52:25Brooks, Curtis, Myers and McDaniel are all in the ball game.
- 1:52:29Back to throw is Reeves.
- 1:52:31Brooks fires out and a flat over the head of Ike Curtis.
- 1:52:34Would have been a first down in midfield but Reeves threw the ball too high.
- 1:52:40And they'll send McAnally in to boot.
- 1:52:42Last time McAnally really drilled one that went out of bounds at the close five-yard line.
- 1:52:51The line of scrimmage is the Bengals 35.
- 1:52:59That was a 47-yarder. McAnally only averaged 35 yards in the first half.
- 1:53:04Snap back from center is a good one.
- 1:53:06McAnally gets a good high.
- 1:53:08Spiral away over the far side, Stevens ropes.
- 1:53:10He takes the ball and is hit immediately at the 19.
- 1:53:13Right down to cover him was Melvin Morgan.
- 1:53:16And he no sooner had that ball than Morgan,
- 1:53:18the rookie from Mississippi Valley, was right in there on top of him
- 1:53:21and dropped him right about at the 19 or 20-yard line.
- 1:53:26So that was a 45-yard boot by McAnally.
- 1:53:29It was away from Stevens.
- 1:53:30He had to drift off to his right to pull it down.
- 1:53:35Right at the 20, the Colts will start out again there, first and 10,
- 1:53:38just as they did in the last series.
- 1:53:43Bengals have a 27-21 lead.
- 1:53:46A game that's all the Colts come right out and score on the first series.
- 1:53:49The second half to take a 21-20 lead.
- 1:53:52Baxter and I, Doughty and Carr are split on both sides.
- 1:53:55Now Doughty comes in motion.
- 1:53:57And a quick pitch around the left side comes Lydell Mitchell.
- 1:54:00He gets up over the 25 to about the 27-yard line
- 1:54:03before Kenny Riley can bring him down.
- 1:54:06Yet a wave of interference out in front of him on his sweep left.
- 1:54:09Doughty, who was going in motion toward the line of scrimmage,
- 1:54:11stopped and was also part of the interference,
- 1:54:13just as Ike Curtis is on a same particular play for the Bengals.
- 1:54:17It was a 7-yard pick up and it'll be second and three.
- 1:54:21And as the play was whistled at, David Taylor, who was leading up in front
- 1:54:25and trying to throw it down to a block.
- 1:54:28Taylor and Tommy Kassanova were exchanging dirty glances and a few elbows.
- 1:54:35Split this time back down and Bob Brown jumped across
- 1:54:37but got back into the line goes Mitchell.
- 1:54:40He squeezed through and got out to the 30.
- 1:54:42All of a sudden he came out of nowhere.
- 1:54:44He was pinched in there by Bob Brown and Ron Carpenter,
- 1:54:46but he came out of the stack and made it out to the 30-yard line
- 1:54:49and has the first down.
- 1:54:50It looked as though he were stopped.
- 1:54:52I think Brown and Carpenter are trying to figure out how he got away.
- 1:54:56The ball is just up over the 30 and it is the first down.
- 1:55:02Bob Brown jumped across the line of scrimmage fairly far but didn't make contact
- 1:55:06and managed to get back and the play ran right there.
- 1:55:16Again, Dowdy comes in motion to the near side and Bert Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:55:20Now he's being chased, gets away from one man coming, runs up to the 35.
- 1:55:24Pritchard hits him a fumble and his kick into the backfield
- 1:55:28and now Kenny Roddy is going to fall out and will have it.
- 1:55:31Oh, Pritchard really banged Bert Jones and separated him from the ball
- 1:55:35and then somebody kicked it and Kenny Roddy, instead of trying to pick it up,
- 1:55:39just decided to be safe and fell on the ball at the Bengals 47-yard line.
- 1:55:47Boy, Bert Jones lost that ball immediately when he was hit by Pritchard
- 1:55:51and that ball really flew around and finally Riley recovered at the 47-yard line.
- 1:55:55Wow, we have had a lot of action, Jim, in this ball game of all types this afternoon.
- 1:55:59I tell you, Bert Jones has to know that he got popped and got popped good that time
- 1:56:04because Ron Pritchard put every bit of what he's got into it.
- 1:56:09The Bengals start out at their own 48-yard line.
- 1:56:13Fakes back to throw, quick slant down the middle.
- 1:56:15Myers dropped it at the 40 and there was no one near him.
- 1:56:18Right into Chip's hands and you won't see that very often.
- 1:56:21The quarterback over there, Nelson Muncie, is falling down.
- 1:56:27Oh, that would have been a big gainer.
- 1:56:28That would have been all the way down to the close 30-yard line or so,
- 1:56:31but Chip couldn't hold on to it and it becomes second and 10 at the 48
- 1:56:35and he was really disgusted with himself.
- 1:56:37And as you say, that's not the kind of thing you see happen very often with Chip Myers.
- 1:56:41We've talked about his maturity, his experience of being Mr. Clutch.
- 1:56:45That doesn't happen too often.
- 1:56:50Split in behind, John Reeves this time.
- 1:56:53Curtis split out to the right side.
- 1:56:55Hand off into the line goes out and he comes up over the 50 and down into cold territory
- 1:56:59and he's made about the 47-yard line, gained about five on that play in through the left side.
- 1:57:04Big Mike Barnes was the man along with Dutton who dragged him down.
- 1:57:09Call it a five-yard gain at the close 47 and it will be third and five.
- 1:57:18Reeves has completed three out of eight for 32 yards.
- 1:57:25Two-a-minute 17 here in the third quarter. Slot formation right with Myers in the slot.
- 1:57:29Wide is Bill Brooks.
- 1:57:31Now Myers or Curtis goes in motion over the far side of the field.
- 1:57:34Reeves goes back to throw.
- 1:57:36Pass is the first to intercept the bar line and John Dutton is knocked down at the 45.
- 1:57:41No, it's Fred Cook.
- 1:57:43They try to set up a screen pass out on the right side.
- 1:57:46It was knocked up in the air and Fred Cook came down with a ball at the bangle 43.
- 1:57:51So they get it back on an interception after the Bengals have recovered the ball on a fumble
- 1:57:56and a close and business at the bangle 43.
- 1:58:02Now the Bengals defense will get the stern call.
- 1:58:06The 27-21 ball game. The Bengals out in front.
- 1:58:10A minute and three seconds left in the third quarter.
- 1:58:13Doughty and Roger Karr split.
- 1:58:15Deeks and Mitchell are the running backs.
- 1:58:17They're in an eye.
- 1:58:19Handoff goes to the second man Mitchell and he gets maybe a couple of yards as he tries the right side.
- 1:58:24Ron Pritchard who's right there really knocked his feet right out from under him.
- 1:58:29It's a handshake from Koi Bacon.
- 1:58:31A gain of a couple of yards on the play to the 41.
- 1:58:36Well, they give them only one, they say.
- 1:58:39Now actually it's closer to a two-yard gain for statistical purposes it is.
- 1:58:44We'll call it second and eighth.
- 1:58:46Down in the about 30 seconds remaining here in the third quarter.
- 1:58:50Bengals lead it 27-21.
- 1:58:52The Bengals got it on a fumble.
- 1:58:54Colts get it right back on an interception.
- 1:58:56Now they send Lydell Mitchell in motion over to the right side.
- 1:58:59Bert Jones goes back to throw.
- 1:59:00Looks, fires off and a flat is cut on the 30-yard line.
- 1:59:03Down to the 25. Bernard Jackson after him.
- 1:59:06Donny Castle-Earlville will finally haul him out of bounds inside the stand about the eighth.
- 1:59:11He was bled out in the wide receiver, run away from a man well out into the field,
- 1:59:16and got it all the way down to the eight-yard line.
- 1:59:19Good better running by Mitchell after he caught the pass.
- 1:59:22And it will be first and goal.
- 1:59:24One out of bounds finally by Casanova after he eluded Riley and Jackson.
- 1:59:39The ball just inside the nine. First and goal for the Colts.
- 1:59:43They send Roger Carr out to the right.
- 1:59:45Put Lydell Mitchell on the wing and Leakes directly in behind Bert Jones.
- 1:59:49Quick pitch around the right side.
- 1:59:51Leakes gets to the five-yard line and is going to be shoved back by about three or four Bengals.
- 1:59:56They gained about four on the plays.
- 1:59:58Sweep with everybody out in front leading the way.
- 2:00:02Carpenter, Casanova, and Kenny Johnson all over there.
- 2:00:04And they've come to the end of the third quarter.
- 2:00:07Goers, Bengals 27, Colts 21.
- 2:00:37More people are getting a burger urge every day.
- 2:00:43They know a beer isn't good just because it looks good on big TV spectaculars.
- 2:00:47It has to taste good, like burgers.
- 2:00:49Singier, fresher, better tasting.
- 2:00:52Unfool yourself. Get the burger urge.
- 2:01:11Burger Brewing Company, Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 2:01:16This is Jimmy Crum along with Phil Simm back at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 2:01:20Starting the final 15 minutes of play, the Bengals leading by a score of 27 to 21.
- 2:01:25But that, dear friends, is subject to change.
- 2:01:28Because right now the Baltimore Colts have the ball second down, goal to go, at the Bengals five-yard line.
- 2:01:36We have had enough action here in one game this afternoon to cover four or five games.
- 2:01:42And these fans, when they traded ends of the field, when they came back down to our right,
- 2:01:47the fans gave these Baltimore Colts a standing ovation.
- 2:01:51So here we go.
- 2:01:53Second and goal about five and a half yards away.
- 2:01:55Roger Cole goes out of her car, goes out to the left, bring Dowdy out to the right.
- 2:02:02Bert Jones, the quarterback, gives the handoff into the line.
- 2:02:05Lydell Mitchell, he's all the way down to about the one-yard line as he rolled in over that right side.
- 2:02:10Running hard, Kenny Johnson there on the tackle.
- 2:02:15There are about three other Bengals helping drag him down.
- 2:02:18Lydell Mitchell just a straight slam and over tackle.
- 2:02:20Now they'll bring two tight ends and bring McCauley in to replace Mitchell.
- 2:02:25The ball is just inside the two-yard line.
- 2:02:27It'll be third and goal.
- 2:02:31Now the Bengals' defense will really be called on.
- 2:02:37Bert Jones signals for quiet as they come out of the huddle.
- 2:02:44McCauley and Roosevelt leaks in behind him.
- 2:02:47Handoff into the line.
- 2:02:49Into the touchdown.
- 2:02:50Roosevelt leaks.
- 2:02:51The big hole opens up on the left side of the goal line over the right side of the Bengals' line.
- 2:02:56They went into the touchdown that ties it up.
- 2:02:59Roosevelt leaks.
- 2:03:00Two-yard run.
- 2:03:02And in the seesaw game, the Colts tie it up again.
- 2:03:13This has been some kind of offensive football game this afternoon.
- 2:03:17Bengals led 20-14 at the half.
- 2:03:22Colts just done moved 43 yards in five plays.
- 2:03:27The pass interception set it up.
- 2:03:29The kick by Lyd hired us up and it's good.
- 2:03:31That puts the Colts out in front.
- 2:03:36So there's time out on the field to score Colts 28, Bengals 27.
- 2:03:41Quick pick, never too far away.
- 2:03:46Quick pick is never too far away at all.

- 2:04:46Well, in the last two minutes of that third quarter, we had all sorts of activity with about a minute fifty to go.
- 2:04:52Bert Jones fumbled. Cincinnati recovered with about a minute three to go.
- 2:04:56Fred Cook intercepted. John Reeves passed.
- 2:04:59And then fourteen minutes and fourteen seconds, just about forty seconds into the fourth quarter, the cold score.
- 2:05:06Lenhart's kick over the far side of the field. It'll be Willie Shelby at the three.
- 2:05:10Shelby comes straight up to the ten, to the fifteen, to the twenty, breaks away at the thirty.
- 2:05:14At the thirty-five, forty, forty-three yard line, and a flag is down as the Colts are all over Shelby out there.
- 2:05:22A flag is down, and let's see whether it's going to be a grabbing the face mask or what it may be.
- 2:05:29Shinner is indicating a personal foul called against the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:05:33Willie Shelby burst into a hole, and there were just a couple of men back there.
- 2:05:36Tony Lenhart, the man who kicked off, was one of those who slowed him up.
- 2:05:42And a flag through right in the melee, and it's going to be a fifteen yard walk off against the Colts,
- 2:05:46taken from the Bengals forty-three all the way down to the Colts forty-one yard line.
- 2:05:51Personal foul of some type.
- 2:06:00Just a personal foul, that's it. No further delineation.
- 2:06:03Somebody in there with a shot of some kind. So the Bengals in great field position,
- 2:06:07down at the Colts forty-one yard line. Personal foul was against Sanders Shriver.
- 2:06:14Curtis and Myers are the wide receivers. This stadium is noisy at the live.
- 2:06:21Let's see what John Reeves does on play number one. Reeves going back to fast.
- 2:06:25Look, fires down the middle. Curtis and Crumpey can't hold on to it.
- 2:06:30Crumpey was alone. He had curled down there at the twenty-five, and Reeves just drew the ball.
- 2:06:36Off the mark. Would have been a quick first down.
- 2:06:40Back to the forty-one, and it will be second in stand.
- 2:06:44Now there's a penalty flag down, and this one's against Cincinnati. Looks like a long one.
- 2:06:52Now the Bengals are only moving back enough to indicate that it might be a five yard play.
- 2:06:56Let's see if the Colts will decline it.
- 2:07:10Now it is going to be at the ten yard penalty, apparently holding. Let's get the signal right here.
- 2:07:18Dave Lapham, illegal use of the hands is the call, and that puts the ball back, as they would say up in Canada, to fifty-one.
- 2:07:25The Bengals forty-nine yard line, and it will be first down in twenty.
- 2:07:34Curtis and Myers both split on opposite sides. Reeves with the ball, drops back to throw. Reeves looking.
- 2:07:40Now he's going to be hit and dropped back at about the forty-three. Couldn't find anybody.
- 2:07:45Tried to run, and John Dutton got him from behind. Reeves goes down again.
- 2:07:50Reeves has been knocked down about three or four times here in this second half.
- 2:07:55Second and twenty-five, back of the Bengals forty-four.
- 2:08:01Reeves with the ball, gives off in the drop play, straight up the middle, all the way down into Colts territory at about the forty-seven or forty-eight yard line comes Lenville Elliott.
- 2:08:09Joe Herman finally hauled him down. It's going to be the Colts forty-eight, so the play is good for about eight yards.
- 2:08:14And now it will be third down and about seventeen. Bengals quarterbacks have been sacked about a half a dozen times this afternoon.
- 2:08:27Chris Barr kicked a fifty-two yard field goal near the end of the first half, but this is beyond field goal range now.
- 2:08:35Bengals trailed in the ball game by one, twenty-eight to twenty-seven. Both Myers and Curtis lined up on the near side.
- 2:08:42Fake back to throw. Reeves fires down the middle, a dive and Myers comes up with the ball at the twenty-eight yard line.
- 2:08:49No, they say he trapped it.
- 2:08:56Now the Colts are arguing. Let's see, what did they rule? Oh, they did rule no catch. They say Myers trapped the ball in a dive.
- 2:09:04So it will come back to the forty-eight yard line and McInerney will have to go into booth.
- 2:09:13There was a linebacker back there, Stan White, and Reeves had to throw the ball far enough in front of him to elude him.
- 2:09:21And Myers had to dive and they say he trapped. So McInerney will punt with a line of scrimmage to Colts forty-eight.
- 2:09:27Snap back from center. McInerney gets a boomer away that he aims for the clapping corner and it goes way on back into the end zone.
- 2:09:35In fact, it lands beyond the end line. So it will come out to the twenty. There's time out of the field. Score, Colts twenty-eight, Bengals twenty-seven.
- 2:09:44Here's Tom T. Hall for Chevy trucks. A man should drive a truck that doesn't plow. A truck, truck built to take it worth the price you pay.
- 2:09:57A truck you know will last when things get tough. They call it Chevrolet. Chevy trucks, your money's worth.
- 2:10:10Mile after mile after mile, you got yourself a truck with Chevrolet. They just keep on carrying that load.
- 2:10:22They've got the value everybody's looking for. That's why you see more Chevy's on the road.
- 2:10:30Chevy trucks, your money's worth. Mile after mile after mile. See all the tough 1976 Chevy trucks at your Chevy dealer.
- 2:10:42And see why there are more Chevy trucks on the road than any other makes.
- 2:10:47Now the Bengals have to hold the coast down here in their own territory and try to get that ball back again.
- 2:10:53Twelve and a half minutes to go as the Colts start out at their own twenty.
- 2:10:56Dowdy and Carr both wide, Mitchell and Leakes are the running backs.
- 2:11:00And off comes the light, L. Mitchell drives the left side and he's knocked down at about the twenty-two.
- 2:11:05A slicing tackle from the outside by Bo Harris, the left side linebacker.
- 2:11:09Harris sliced in and hit him right at the twenty.
- 2:11:11And Leakes forward momentum, carried him two more yards out to the twenty-two.
- 2:11:15It'll be second and eight, a good defensive play by Harris.
- 2:11:18LSU men have been a big factor in this ball game this afternoon.
- 2:11:22Burt Jones, the Colt quarterback from there, Casanova intercepted one of his passes and rounded back 31 yards for a touchdown.
- 2:11:30Now the backs are in and eyes, second and eight Colts at their own twenty-two.
- 2:11:34And off, L. Mitchell breaks out to the thirty, to the thirty-three yard line with Casanova and Leclerc finally wrestles him down at the thirty-seven.
- 2:11:43Came in through the Bengals' left side again that time.
- 2:11:45Jerry Burley has not played at all today and regular action for the Bengals because of that sprained ankle.
- 2:11:51He's only about 85 percent.
- 2:11:53He's one of the Bengals' better pass rushers.
- 2:11:55That's hurting in that department.
- 2:11:57It's a quick gain of 16 for Mitchell.
- 2:11:59The Colts have a first down.
- 2:12:01Kenny Anderson over on the far sideline.
- 2:12:03He's warming up once again.
- 2:12:05He's back behind the bench warming up with Billy Brooks.
- 2:12:08Casanova may have been shaken up a little bit on that play.
- 2:12:11Marvin Cobb has gone in at the strong safety spot.
- 2:12:16Comes over to left where they line up with a tight right formation.
- 2:12:20And off, it's Lidell Mitchell and he gets maybe a couple of yards as he tries the right side.
- 2:12:25Bo Harris was again there in to up end him along with Bob Brown.
- 2:12:29And as he catapulted out of that group, Jim Leclerc pinned him right down at the forty.
- 2:12:33So as they did on the preceding series of plays, gained two on the first down and have a second and eight.
- 2:12:41Kenny Anderson is warming up over behind the Bengals' bench.
- 2:12:45Anderson took a real shot in the upper chest or throat.
- 2:12:49Near the end of the first half and was really shaken up.
- 2:12:52Casanova being administered to by Dr. Blu.
- 2:12:55Trainer Mara Pollard, second and eight.
- 2:12:57Colts out at their own forty.
- 2:12:59Bert Jones with the ball. Hands off the Lidell Mitchell.
- 2:13:01He's knocked down by Ron Carpenter behind the line of scrimmage.
- 2:13:04Carpenter came booming through there and knocked his feet out from under him for a loss of a yard or two.
- 2:13:09Make it one back at the thirty-nine and now it will be third and nine.
- 2:13:13Sterling defensive play by Ron Carpenter.
- 2:13:16John Brown was there to pounce right at him.
- 2:13:19Cardinals lead the Packers fifteen to nothing now in the third quarter.
- 2:13:24After spotting Cleveland fourteen points, the Steeners came roaring back for a thirty-one to fourteen victory.
- 2:13:30Rams and Vikings are scoreless in the second period.
- 2:13:33Third and nine. Bert Jones back to throw.
- 2:13:35Looks, fires up the middle, a dive and a catch out at the forty-eight yard line by Lidell Mitchell.
- 2:13:40And I believe that he's going to be short of what he needed for a first down at all fence and where they spot the ball.
- 2:13:45They put it down and the crowd doesn't like it. They're going to bring in the chains to measure.
- 2:13:49Pitcher was with Mitchell, but Bert Jones really threw a bullseye and Jones really stood in amongst good pressure that time.
- 2:13:58So the chains have to come across all the way from the far side of the field. It's going to be very, very close.
- 2:14:03From here, Phil, it looks like it might be just inches short, but we'll wait until they pull the six down to see.
- 2:14:12It is not. It is a first down.
- 2:14:18Got a big third and nine play and the Coast made it.
- 2:14:25Rather a third and eleven.
- 2:14:30So the Coast are out at their own forty-eight yard line now.
- 2:14:35Bengals have lost the opportunity to hold them deep and force them from punt well back in their territory.
- 2:14:40Roger Carr on the far side, near side dowdy. Carr has got three touchdown passes.
- 2:14:45Handoff Mitchell tries the right side and spins up to midfield.
- 2:14:49And that is all. Again, it's Bo Harris cutting in from that left side line backing spot to knock him down.
- 2:14:55Got help from a couple of others. Ron Carpenter was there along with LeClair.
- 2:14:58It was a two yard gain. So for the third time in the series on first down, they pick up two yards on the first down play and have a second and eight.
- 2:15:06The ball right at midfield. Coast lead at twenty-eight to twenty-seven with nine minutes and a handful of seconds.
- 2:15:15Now just nine minutes remaining.
- 2:15:18Carr and Dowdy again split, this time on opposite sides of the field.
- 2:15:22Baxter and Ivey and Bert Jones give the second man Mitchell. He's through for about five, eight, nine yards all the way down to the Bengals' forty-one yard line.
- 2:15:31Broke a couple of tackles en route. Finally Bernard Jackson pulled him down from a pre-safety spot. They're going to stay at the Bengals' forty-two yard line.
- 2:15:41And he's got the first down at forty-two. Needed eight and made it.
- 2:15:49So the Colts holding on to the football, running off precious time on that clock.
- 2:15:54Twenty-eight, twenty-seven, they hold a one point lead. Fifty thousand, three hundred seventy-four fans in attendance here this afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
- 2:16:04So we're ready to go. The handoff this time to Mitchell, he's hit from behind but his momentum carries him up down inside the forty to about the thirty-eight yard line.
- 2:16:12Ron Pritchard was the man who made the tackle on him.
- 2:16:16They'll put it at the thirty-eight yard line so he made about four on this play and it'll be second and six.
- 2:16:23Good blocking by the Colts offensive line. David Taylor and George Coons to tackles. Robert Pratt and Elmer Calle at the guards and Ken Mendel and all the center.
- 2:16:33Ball in the dirt part of the infield at the thirty-eight second and sixth Colts. They lead by one.
- 2:16:40And they split both wide receivers. This time Bert Jones goes back to throw and he's going to be hit and dragged down back at the forty-nine yard line by Koi Bacon who got him for the second time.
- 2:16:50Bacon was right in on Jones immediately and threw him all the way back at the Bengals forty-nine yard line, a loss of about eleven yards on the play.
- 2:16:59They're going to put it at the forty-eight yard line so make it a loss of ten and it'll bring up third and sixteen.
- 2:17:04Jones drifted that way and all of a sudden Bacon was right in front of his face and he tried to reverse field and go back the other way but Bacon got hold of his jersey and dragged him down.
- 2:17:14Lydell Mitchell is over the one hundred yard mark and rushing twenty-four carries for a hundred and two.
- 2:17:20Little over four yards to pop. Here's a big third down play and the Bengals have got to hold and get their hands back on the ball. Seven fifteen remain.
- 2:17:28That double wing formation. Only McCauley is in behind Bert Jones and Jones goes back to throw.
- 2:17:34Look, fires down the middle and pops down at the thirty-two yard line and maybe a first down. Thought down there by Glenn Doughty. Lamar Perry shot him to drag him down. Let's see whether they have the first down or not.
- 2:17:46Very close.
- 2:17:49That's twice now and big third down play is that Bert Jones has looked to a spot almost knowing exactly where he wants to put that ball the last time he had the first down just by inches.
- 2:18:00And it's going to be just as close this time. They're bringing in the yard markers from the far side of the field. This time I believe it's going to be a wee bit short.
- 2:18:09It is by a couple of inches.
- 2:18:20They have not sent in their punters so I guess the Colts are going for it. The ball is down at the Bengals thirty-two and Bert Jones on two big third down situations is hit clutch passes. It's going to be fourth and just a couple of inches.
- 2:18:40Don McCauley in the backfield with Roosevelt leaps.
- 2:18:44Let's see if Bert Jones will keep and just try to drive dive over the heap. Into the line and he got the first down. It's McCauley he's down at the thirty.
- 2:18:52Got a couple of yards on the play and that will be a Colts first down. It'll enable them to hold onto the ball. Six forty-one is the time remaining and they're really chewing up the clock. The Bengals have had the ball for just one series here in this fourth quarter.
- 2:19:08The Colts have held the ball for almost six minutes now here in this drive. They took it over with twelve thirty-one to go back on their own twenty yard line. They're going to measure it. It doesn't look like it's even close.
- 2:19:20And we now have six forty-one remaining and the clock stopped. It isn't even close. It's a good yard over. I don't know why they brought the chains in.
- 2:19:33Big third down clutch pass to Glenn Doughty, the former Michigan tailback, who is the wide receiver here.
- 2:19:43Bert Jones has hit fourteen for twenty-nine this afternoon. He has been intercepted three times. Fourteen for twenty-nine for three hundred and two yards.
- 2:19:56Doughty and Carr split out. The Bengals are really going to have to dig in and hold here quickly and get their hands back on the ball. Doughty comes in motion. Look for them to run that way. They do.
- 2:20:05Running out the left side is Mitchell. Reggie Williams hits him and then he's really put down for good by LeClaire.
- 2:20:14Reggie Williams is in the linebacking spot now, number fifty-seven, a rookie from Dartmouth. They've got four linebackers in there.
- 2:20:23LeClaire is out. Now LeClaire is in. Bo Harris is in. He may have replaced Ron Pritchard. The ball is right at the thirty. There is no gain on that wide sweep to the left and it becomes second and ten.
- 2:20:37Reggie Williams has replaced Pritchard. I don't know if Pritchard was shaken up or what the situation may be. Wide men both ways.
- 2:20:44Bert Jones with the ball. Hands off. Mitchell around the outside and he's got nothing. Ron Carpenter grabbed hold of his jersey and then Marvin Cobb was there to pin him down for good. He got nothing at all.
- 2:20:53So now Bert Jones looks at another big third down play. This is third and ten.
- 2:21:02So Roosevelt leaks, comes out, McCauley goes in. That's lead at twenty-eight, twenty-seven. Clock running five-fourteen. Time remaining.
- 2:21:09It's going to be an interesting thrill to see what Jones goes through this time. This is a third, big third down play he's looked at.
- 2:21:17Third and sixteen the last time. Prior to that it was third and nine.
- 2:21:24Mitchell comes in motion off the right. Both wide receivers to the left. Jones goes back to throw. He's being chased. Now he's going to run at the thirty and goes out of bounds at about the twenty-eight.
- 2:21:34Reggie Williams came over there to force him out of bounds. Now it will be fourth down and they will have about seven yards to go for the first down.
- 2:21:41He made just two yards on the play and that is all. In goes Tony Lindhart. The field goal man will be about a forty-six yard attempt.
- 2:22:00Both lead by one. They're trying to up the lead to four to put the Bengals in position where they'd have to have a touchdown.
- 2:22:08The ball will be spotted just over the thirty-five. It's got a thirty-six, a forty-six yard attempt. Ball to snap back. There's a kick and it's blocked.
- 2:22:17And it's picked up by a called who loses it. Now everybody scrambles forward and the Bengals will have it at about the thirty-six yard line.
- 2:22:23Somebody in the middle of the line blocked that ball. The Bengals have four minutes and forty-two seconds to do something about the situation as it now stands.
- 2:22:31When time is back in they will have the ball first and center their own thirty-six yard line. They trail by one point, twenty-eight, twenty-seven.
- 2:22:38Four minutes and forty-two seconds in which to put some points on the board. Kenny Anderson back in the quarterback now for the first time in his second half.
- 2:22:46Slot formation out to the right side. Running backs Elliott and Fritz.
- 2:22:50Make into the line goes Elliott and he has got nothing. He's going to be stopped right there at the thirty-six yard line standing up as they try to have to lay handoff.
- 2:22:57Joe Erman there to drag him down. Four and a half minutes is the time showing on the clock. There was no gain in the play and it'll be second and tenth.
- 2:23:10Kenny Anderson shaken up by that blow from Stan White here at the end of the first half.
- 2:23:14Is in now for the first time in the second half. It's been replaced by John Reeves. Reeves hits three out of ten.
- 2:23:20One to touchdown pass, nine yards to Lenville Elliott.
- 2:23:25Now Mike Curtis comes in motion over to the near side. Anderson with the ball goes back to throw.
- 2:23:30Looking, fires out on the flat caught by Fritz. At the forty, the forty-five and out of bounds at about the Bengals forty-nine yard line and has the first down.
- 2:23:43The ball is going to be right out of midfield. It's good for about fourteen yards. The Bengals have got to work it down far enough to get that field goal shot at the very least.
- 2:23:51They trail by one twenty-eight twenty-seven and we're just under four minutes. The clock stops as Fritz was knocked out of bounds on the far side of the field.
- 2:23:58The ball is at the cold fifty or rather at the fifty yard line. It belongs to both of them. First and ten.
- 2:24:06Brooks near side, Curtis far side. Anderson fakes back to throw. Quick slant. Incomplete. Brooks was hit just as the ball got there and he was belted hard by Nelson Munsey and the ball went flying.
- 2:24:20It was about an eight yard slant pass. So it'll bring in second and ten. Bouchenot goes out. John Shinners comes in with a play.
- 2:24:31Good defensive play by Lloyd Mumford. Played a number of years with the Miami Dolphins before coming here to the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:24:39And New England knocked off Miami very handily this afternoon. Bengals trail by one have got to get it down into field goal range. They have a second and ten at midfield.
- 2:24:51Anderson goes back to throw. Look, now he's going to be hit and dragged down back at the thirty-nine yard line. And the man who got through and got to him was number sixty-three Mike Barnes.
- 2:25:03That may have been the biggest play of the ball game for the Colts. Anderson could not elude him. It's an eleven yard loss and it'll be third down now and twenty-one.
- 2:25:13And the Colts have sacked bingo quarterbacks. I believe that's about the seventh time this afternoon.
- 2:25:22Now the Bengals will be going with all kinds of wide receivers. Elliott goes out. They bring in John McDaniel.
- 2:25:33Chip Myers is in. So are Brooks and Curtis. Only one man in behind. The Colts will rush through the front four and drop everybody else back.
- 2:25:41Anderson back to throw. Look, now he's going to be hit and dropped. It's a fumble recovered back at the thirty-two yard line.
- 2:25:48They had eight men back. There was no room to pass. Anderson was hit and dropped the ball. And this crowd up on his feet cheering.
- 2:25:56Baltimore Colts defensive unit Joe Urban was the man who got him and McAnally will have to boot it.
- 2:26:02And the Bengals are going to have to make one final stand and get that ball back. They trail by one at twenty-eight, twenty-seven.
- 2:26:18Block running it down to two twenty-seven. Pat McAnally needs a long boot. Gets one away. It's not particularly good.
- 2:26:26James Stevens takes it at the twenty-nine. Comes up to the thirty to thirty-five spun down at the thirty-six yard line by Glenn Cameron.
- 2:26:34So the Colts will be at their own thirty-seven. The Bengals have had this ball just two series of plays here in the fourth quarter and have not been able to move it.
- 2:26:52Bert Jones has had good protection from his offensive line. It's been the secondary of Baltimore that has kept things pretty well bottled up and Bengals quarterbacks have had to take a long time to look and see.
- 2:27:03Bengals are going to have to get this ball back quickly. Colts at their own thirty-eight with the first down. Colts lead it by one twenty-eight, twenty-seven.
- 2:27:12And off goes to Roosevelt Leakes. Around the right side, cuts back and he gets a couple of yards and that's about all. Roosevelt Leakes started out wide left spun in. Koi Bacon turned the play in.
- 2:27:22And then there were about three other Bengals there to stop it up and the Colts may be able to let this clock run down to the two minute warning now before they have to run off another play.
- 2:27:31Another clock to stop at two twenty-eight. The Bengals call the time out to stop it after a gain of one yard. The Colts will have a second and nine. Time out on the field. Score, Colts twenty-eight, Bengals twenty-seven.
- 2:27:43When you get the urge to know what you've got to do, you've got to satisfy that urge with a zingy of blue. Get the urge with burnin'. Zingy of blue. Get the urge with burnin'.
- 2:28:04Get the urge with burnin'. Get the urge with burnin'. Get the urge with burnin'. Yeah, get the urge with the un-bambuzlin' beer. Better than ever burger. The livelier, fresher beer.
- 2:28:19Pour a tall frosty mug and discover that great zingy burger flavor. Unfool yourself.
- 2:28:27Get the urge with burnin'. Zingy of blue. Get the urge with burnin'. Get the urge with burnin'. Yeah, you're free to go.
- 2:28:41ثd for brewing company, Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 2:28:43company, Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 2:28:49Golds will have a second and
- 2:28:50nine at their own 39 yard line.
- 2:28:51The Bengals have expended one
- 2:28:53time out.
- 2:28:57And off this time to Mitchell,
- 2:28:58he spins forward for maybe three
- 2:29:00yards as he tries the right side
- 2:29:01gets out to about the 43 yard
- 2:29:03line. Now the Bengals, you know,
- 2:29:06Cincinnati calls another time
- 2:29:07out stops it with 224 left. They
- 2:29:10gain about four in a play. It'll
- 2:29:11bring up a third down and about
- 2:29:13five.
- 2:29:19Locker stopped with 224 left and
- 2:29:21the Bengals have just one time
- 2:29:22out remaining. The Coast have a
- 2:29:23slim one point lead 28 to 27 and
- 2:29:27then what has been one exciting
- 2:29:28football game here at Memorial
- 2:29:30Stadium in Baltimore. The Bengals
- 2:29:44stop them here and force them to
- 2:29:45punt. Bengals will have the ball
- 2:29:47one more time, but they probably
- 2:29:49will have a long way to go.
- 2:29:53Golds defense against the pass
- 2:29:55has been excellent. Bengals
- 2:29:57quarterbacks, both Reeves and
- 2:29:58Anderson have had difficulty
- 2:30:00finding receivers and have had to
- 2:30:01wait long enough. So they've been
- 2:30:02dropped about seven times.
- 2:30:10Ball is out of the cold 43 yard
- 2:30:12line. Jim LeClair has gone over
- 2:30:13to check defensive signals on the
- 2:30:15far side line with Chuck Studley
- 2:30:17and Charlie Winter. Let's see if
- 2:30:19the Coast will risk putting the
- 2:30:20ball in the air here in a third
- 2:30:21and five of their own 43. Bert
- 2:30:24Jones has converted many a big
- 2:30:26third down play. They go into a
- 2:30:27passing formation, a double wing
- 2:30:30with only McCauley in behind
- 2:30:31Bert Jones. Jones is going to
- 2:30:33pass, rolls out to his right,
- 2:30:35now going to run, still looks up
- 2:30:36field. Now it's going to be
- 2:30:37hitting drop back at about the
- 2:30:3841. Maybe got up to the 43. And
- 2:30:42the Bengals have expended their
- 2:30:43third time out here and have
- 2:30:46used them all. And the Coast
- 2:30:48will have to punt and David Lee
- 2:30:49goes in to do it. I'm surprised
- 2:30:52with only 16 seconds the Bengals
- 2:30:53took a time out because the
- 2:30:55clock would have stopped with
- 2:30:56the exchange of teams as they're
- 2:30:58going to punt. So now we need a
- 2:31:00long run back. An odd score out
- 2:31:02on the Coast. The Bears lead San
- 2:31:04Francisco seven to five. So San
- 2:31:07Francisco has scored a field
- 2:31:09goal and a safety. St. Louis
- 2:31:12leads Green Bay in a second half
- 2:31:1422 to nothing. It's a loss of a
- 2:31:15couple of yards on the play as
- 2:31:16they put the ball back at the
- 2:31:1841. And when time is back in,
- 2:31:24David Lee will boot it away. Lee
- 2:31:25has punted well today. The first
- 2:31:28half of the game he kicked just
- 2:31:29two for 51 yards. He hasn't
- 2:31:31maintained that average here in
- 2:31:32the second half but nevertheless
- 2:31:34has punted well. As I mentioned
- 2:31:35before the Bengals have had the
- 2:31:36ball for just two series of
- 2:31:38plays here in this fourth
- 2:31:40quarter. Well if wishful thinking
- 2:31:43would help a snap right over his
- 2:31:45head would be the ideal thing
- 2:31:46right here.
- 2:31:53Parish and Shelby are the deep
- 2:31:54men. The snap is a good on this
- 2:31:56time and he gets a good spiral
- 2:31:58away over toward the far side
- 2:32:00line that goes out of bounds way
- 2:32:02down and about the Bengals 11
- 2:32:03yard line. A great boot by Lee.
- 2:32:06It was two minutes and nine
- 2:32:07seconds. The Bengals have about
- 2:32:0889 yards to go for a touchdown.
- 2:32:12Any distance inside that for a
- 2:32:13possible field goal attempt.
- 2:32:15The Bengals have just no time
- 2:32:17outs remaining. They've used
- 2:32:19them all. So of course they're
- 2:32:21going to have to throw the ball
- 2:32:22use the sidelines get upfield
- 2:32:25column two plays at a time. A
- 2:32:26great clutch boot by David Lee.
- 2:32:30The Bengals have the ball if
- 2:32:32they say the 12.
- 2:32:38You can run in a lot of plays in
- 2:32:40two minutes nine seconds but the
- 2:32:41Bengals don't have the benefits
- 2:32:42of any time out to throw in
- 2:32:45Brooks comes out of the near
- 2:32:46side. Curtis is in the slot
- 2:32:48Anderson back to throw a quick
- 2:32:50snap to Curtis at the 25 at the
- 2:32:5230. Now he's going to reverse
- 2:32:53himself at the 30 yard. I'm
- 2:32:55still on his feet and get that
- 2:32:56to about the 37 or 38. Curtis
- 2:32:59retreated about five or six
- 2:33:00yards after he caught that
- 2:33:01plant. And that brings us up to
- 2:33:03the two minute warning. So
- 2:33:05there's time out on the field
- 2:33:06score. Code 28 Bengals 27.

- 2:34:16Turn the ball out of their own
- 2:34:1736 yard line. They've got 24
- 2:34:18yards in the play. Remember they
- 2:34:20don't have any timeouts left.
- 2:34:21They're two minutes to go. Like
- 2:34:23to work that ball down of course
- 2:34:24to get it in position for a last
- 2:34:27second field goal effort. The
- 2:34:28coach lead it by one. Dallas
- 2:34:30beat New Orleans 24 to six.
- 2:34:32Denver leads the Jets 13 to three
- 2:34:35in the second quarter.
- 2:34:37The Bengals come out. Curtis
- 2:34:38comes out on the slot. Looks wide
- 2:34:40left. As Chip Myers in are all
- 2:34:42kinds of wide men. Back to
- 2:34:43Throw Anderson. Fires out in a
- 2:34:45flat incomplete. Over there for
- 2:34:50Curtis. Right on top of was
- 2:34:52their fifth defensive back Ray
- 2:34:54Oldham that they have in the
- 2:34:55ballgame. Oldham came right up
- 2:34:57over Curtis shoulder and knocked
- 2:34:58that ball away. Bengals have
- 2:35:02four wide receivers in the game
- 2:35:03Curtis McDaniel Myers and Brooks.
- 2:35:06So the Bengals at their own 36
- 2:35:07have a second and 10. The clock
- 2:35:09stops with a minute fifty five
- 2:35:10left. The Bengals will have to
- 2:35:15use a quick one because they
- 2:35:16won't be able to get men down
- 2:35:17field very likely because the
- 2:35:19coast are dropping eight men
- 2:35:20back into that zone. Anderson
- 2:35:22back to throw. Looks now has
- 2:35:24plenty of time. Still looks.
- 2:35:25Fires upfield. Is caught at the
- 2:35:26forty three yard line by Curtis
- 2:35:28and he's going to be knocked
- 2:35:29down at the Bengals forty four.
- 2:35:31Gained about eight in the play
- 2:35:32and that will bring up a third
- 2:35:33and two. Let's pause fifteen
- 2:35:37seconds for station
- 2:35:38identification. This is the
- 2:35:39Cincinnati Bengals football
- 2:35:40network. You're listening to
- 2:35:42Cincinnati Bengals football
- 2:35:44right here on Radio 86 W.S.O.
- 2:35:47and Henderson your number one
- 2:35:48spot for sports.
- 2:35:52And of course for the run with
- 2:35:53the ball and was knocked down
- 2:35:54at the forty six yard line. He
- 2:35:56may have made the first down
- 2:35:58but the clock is running the
- 2:35:59call for slow getting back on
- 2:36:01the play before this one and the
- 2:36:03officials stopped the clock
- 2:36:04while they got back. Now it
- 2:36:05will stop the clock as they may
- 2:36:07be forced to measure. Let's see
- 2:36:08now they're going to say that it
- 2:36:14is the third down but there is
- 2:36:17about one to go. But now they're
- 2:36:19bringing in the chains to measure
- 2:36:24now brings up points down on
- 2:36:25about a yard to go at the forty
- 2:36:26three balls at the Bengals forty
- 2:36:33six. Crumpy and conflict. Two
- 2:36:35tight ends go back and the
- 2:36:36official fell down or may have
- 2:36:37been knocked down as the Bengals
- 2:36:39came up the line of scrimmage
- 2:36:40like John Chinners just ran over
- 2:36:42him as he had his microphone
- 2:36:43out there the spotting the ball
- 2:36:45very carefully. The Bengals of
- 2:36:46course have to pick up the first
- 2:36:47down at fourth and one.
- 2:36:53Spotting the ball and spotting
- 2:36:54it exactly. The Bengals are in
- 2:36:55their own territory at their own
- 2:36:57forty six. They've got to make
- 2:36:59the first down. Let's see if
- 2:37:00they want to spend a little time
- 2:37:01here in a running play. Let's
- 2:37:03see what they're going to do.
- 2:37:04The Colts are jammed in their
- 2:37:05shoulder high Anderson keeps the
- 2:37:07ball. I don't know if he made it
- 2:37:08or not.
- 2:37:17I'll have to wait and see.
- 2:37:18I'm out of call the Colts and
- 2:37:20stop them I believe.
- 2:37:30Oh we haven't had a measurement
- 2:37:31yet. The clock is stopped with a
- 2:37:33minute 13. Both have about 20
- 2:37:36men out on the field are going
- 2:37:38to bring in the change to
- 2:37:39measure. There's so many folks
- 2:37:41around we can't see the ball.
- 2:37:54That can't have failed off the
- 2:37:55little yards on a deeper play.
- 2:37:57The Bengals are going to have to
- 2:38:02go for the ball. They don't have
- 2:38:03any time out remaining. I
- 2:38:05really think the Bengals use
- 2:38:06their time out too wisely.
- 2:38:11Stop the clock once with two
- 2:38:12sixteen to go. They only would
- 2:38:13have run off 16 seconds and
- 2:38:15would have been down to the two
- 2:38:17minute warning. Jones could just
- 2:38:18flop on the ball a couple of
- 2:38:19times and that's all it'll take.
- 2:38:21He goes down one. The Bengals
- 2:38:23are unable to stop the clock.
- 2:38:27The Colts appear to be winners
- 2:38:29by a point here at 28 27 Bengals
- 2:38:38move the ball off their own 12
- 2:38:40and then we're unable to make a
- 2:38:42first down. They had a third and
- 2:38:44two and fourth and about one
- 2:38:46unable to make and the Colts can
- 2:38:47just run off the clock. A lot of
- 2:38:56dirty white Bengal jerseys on
- 2:38:58that defensive unit. Again Jones
- 2:39:01just goes down to the ground.
- 2:39:04It'll bring up a third down and
- 2:39:06they can just about let the
- 2:39:07clock run right down to the
- 2:39:09fair enough. Colts raising their
- 2:39:12hands and victory just years over
- 2:39:14on the sideline. The Bengals
- 2:39:17are going to win 17 down to 16
- 2:39:21to 15 and the Colts are going to
- 2:39:22win by one point here and the
- 2:39:24Bengals are sitting here
- 2:39:25hopeless or helpless and unable
- 2:39:28to do anything about it. The
- 2:39:31five seconds two teams are
- 2:39:33walking off the field and the
- 2:39:34Colts have won it here by one
- 2:39:35point. Our spotters today have
- 2:39:37been Gene Shields and John Lloyd
- 2:39:39technical director was Paul
- 2:39:40Eichholz and the executive
- 2:39:42producer is Jim Hampton. This is
- 2:39:44Phil Samper. Once again our
- 2:39:45spotter here at Baltimore's
- 2:39:47Memorial Stadium was the Colts
- 2:39:4928 and the Bengals 27. This is
- 2:39:51the Cincinnati Bengals football
- 2:39:53court.
