- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real Talk, Real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker, Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:39Speaker 4: And I have both of my co hosts in the
- 0:41Speaker 4: building today, Hollis Lewis and Miss Odie.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Hello.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Hey, So.
- 0:49Speaker 4: We just passed Thanksgiving. You know, so happy Thanksgiving. I
- 0:52Speaker 4: hope everybody had a happy Thanksgiving. But I'm I'm gonna
- 0:58Speaker 4: I'm gonna open this up because Hollis has brought this up.
- 1:03Speaker 4: I'm curious now because he brought it up about what's
- 1:06Speaker 4: your favorite food on Thanksgiving? What is your favorite piece?
- 1:10Speaker 4: Is it the turkey? Is at the dressing? What is it?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:14Speaker 5: Okay, well mineus the stuffing. But I have a funny
- 1:17Speaker 5: story about the stuffing this year. So my husband and
- 1:20Speaker 5: I decided we you know, a lot of his family
- 1:22Speaker 5: and my family were not available for Thanksgiving, so we
- 1:25Speaker 5: decided just to stay at home and cook ourselves.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:27Speaker 5: So we had turkey, breast, we had you know all that,
- 1:31Speaker 5: We had macaroni and cheese, We had all everything set
- 1:34Speaker 5: up ready to ready to go, put the turkey in,
- 1:36Speaker 5: got everything cooked, sat down to eat, and Jerry goes,
- 1:39Speaker 5: we forgot stuffing. And that's my favorite thing.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Do you homemake the stuffing or yeah?
- 1:46Speaker 5: We had no No, it was home. We had the breadcrumbs,
- 1:49Speaker 5: we had the celery, we had everything, and we just forgot.
- 1:53Speaker 5: And so it was a stuffing less Thanksgiving for me,
- 1:56Speaker 5: and that's my favorite. Well, it was still good.
- 1:59Speaker 6: I like this stuff into Traditionally I liked turkey. But
- 2:04Speaker 6: I think now and again, is this a Thanksgiving food?
- 2:08Speaker 6: Deviled eggs because you get them all the time, Like
- 2:11Speaker 6: maybe it's not a Thanksgiving food. It's definitely a holiday food.
- 2:14Speaker 6: But yeah, it would definitely be doubled eggs for me,
- 2:17Speaker 6: because I just you don't eat them all the time.
- 2:19Speaker 4: That's strange to me. Of all the all the good food,
- 2:24Speaker 4: you could go with the devil eggs.
- 2:26Speaker 6: I mean, because you gotta take you I mean it
- 2:27Speaker 6: would like I would say, maybe like a pie because
- 2:30Speaker 6: I don't eat pie regularly, or a stuffing, you know
- 2:33Speaker 6: what I mean. You think you eat ham, your ham sandwich,
- 2:35Speaker 6: turkey sandwich, you eat that kind of regular mac and
- 2:37Speaker 6: cheese is something that on the menu were throughout the year.
- 2:40Speaker 6: But you know, deviled eggs is not something you know
- 2:42Speaker 6: that's like once or twice a year, maybe three times
- 2:45Speaker 6: double eggs.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go actually with
- 2:48Speaker 4: the turkey. Turkey, like I actually like the turkey. I love,
- 2:52Speaker 4: I love the stuffing, right, but I you know, because
- 2:57Speaker 4: you don't eat turkey a lot, you know, lot of
- 3:00Speaker 4: people don't cook it on a regular basis, and so
- 3:03Speaker 4: it is one of those.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Get like lunch meat.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Are you white meat? Dark meat?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Uh?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Dark meat?
- 3:11Speaker 4: But I'm I'm it's easy for me to to eat
- 3:15Speaker 4: the white meat as well.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I've just gotten you.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I just like turkey now, It's just it don't make
- 3:20Speaker 4: any difference where I cut it from.
- 3:23Speaker 6: I just want, Yeah, I love a turkey, right at
- 3:26Speaker 6: least least favorite. Well, it will move on. You don't
- 3:30Speaker 6: have to rush off of it for me.
- 3:32Speaker 4: You should already know what what my worst one is
- 3:35Speaker 4: a sweet potatoes. Yo, you know what type of sweet potato,
- 3:41Speaker 4: because that's my worst one too.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I don't even care what kind of sweet. I don't
- 3:47Speaker 2: even know what the difference in sweet potatoes are. They're orange.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Potato.
- 3:53Speaker 6: My thing is like, I like sweet potatoes, but I
- 3:56Speaker 6: don't like sweet potatoes sweet. So I don't like candy yam.
- 4:00Speaker 6: You know how they do it with marshmallows and it's disgusting.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's just not good.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Like I like a sweet potato like, I'll do it
- 4:07Speaker 6: like butter like you do, like a baked like I
- 4:09Speaker 6: like its savory but not sweet.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So I agree with you.
- 4:13Speaker 5: So okay. So mine is cranberry sauce. I'm just not
- 4:18Speaker 5: a fan.
- 4:18Speaker 2: That's my second one.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, especially when you when it comes to the
- 4:22Speaker 5: table shape like the can.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know, cranberry sauce is underrated. It's so good. It's
- 4:28Speaker 2: so good.
- 4:29Speaker 4: I'm like, like, when you look at it, like when
- 4:32Speaker 4: you take granberry something, will you take it out?
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's good. I don't even really do yellow.
- 4:41Speaker 4: There's just a look in the texture of it that
- 4:43Speaker 4: just I'm it just doesn't do me well well. So
- 4:50Speaker 4: I wanted to make sure we got that out because
- 4:52Speaker 4: you know, that's part of some of that. There's some
- 4:54Speaker 4: people back, some of some of the listeners are probably
- 4:56Speaker 4: like sitting there having that conversation, what is it that
- 4:59Speaker 4: I don't like?
- 5:00Speaker 2: You know? All right, So let's go.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Back and let's ask the question, and Marshall head coaches
- 5:10Speaker 4: New Ones, what do you think?
- 5:13Speaker 6: I think the question that we were was this successful season?
- 5:17Speaker 6: Where was this a step in the right direction for
- 5:19Speaker 6: each program? And I think and it could be neutral
- 5:24Speaker 6: as well. I think Marshall, for me, they definitely took
- 5:27Speaker 6: a step in the right direction considering everything that happened
- 5:31Speaker 6: last year. And we'll talk about probably Old miss maybe
- 5:34Speaker 6: about to experience that same thing. But Marshall to me,
- 5:39Speaker 6: because are they I believe they're both eligible, they're not.
- 5:45Speaker 6: They both lost, but I think it was a step
- 5:48Speaker 6: in the right direction. Now, whether you consider that a
- 5:51Speaker 6: success or not, I guess that would be on you.
- 5:53Speaker 6: But I think Marshall was good.
- 5:55Speaker 2: W v U kind of same thing.
- 5:57Speaker 6: I mean they lost a lot of players, Rich Rod's back,
- 6:01Speaker 6: so I think both programs are taking steps in the
- 6:03Speaker 6: right direction.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I mean WVU had a run mid season.
- 6:07Speaker 4: So I and before you jump in, yeah, go ahead,
- 6:10Speaker 4: to hollis that run? To me, I think it's important
- 6:17Speaker 4: because that shows where you can be. Now you can say, well,
- 6:22Speaker 4: who are the teams that they made the run on.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I don't think that matters at this point.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I think all that really matters now is the is
- 6:29Speaker 4: the players that are playing for this new coach. They
- 6:33Speaker 4: have confidence, and the coach has something to go back
- 6:36Speaker 4: and say, hey, see this run. We can do this
- 6:39Speaker 4: all season long. If we do this, this and that.
- 6:43Speaker 4: All we got to do is just get better at
- 6:44Speaker 4: these things. Because you know how it is. You can
- 6:47Speaker 4: pick out something and say this is why this game
- 6:49Speaker 4: went that way.
- 6:50Speaker 2: We can change that and we can get that to
- 6:53Speaker 2: a win.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So I mean, I don't challenge that at all. I
- 6:57Speaker 5: think I think you're absolutely correct. And that run and included,
- 7:00Speaker 5: you know that that big win at Houston when Euston
- 7:03Speaker 5: was ranked. Yeah, and then they came home and beat Colorado,
- 7:05Speaker 5: So those were two you know, and and of course
- 7:08Speaker 5: the Pitt Pitt bick. So those were three you know,
- 7:11Speaker 5: teams that that they really needed to beat in order
- 7:15Speaker 5: to keep the momentum going. Unfortunately, I think what happened
- 7:19Speaker 5: with WU at the end is they knew that last
- 7:22Speaker 5: game really was meaningless, and so Texas Tech just rolled
- 7:25Speaker 5: in and rolled the rolled the team. Basically, you know
- 7:29Speaker 5: that that was just an ugly loss on Saturday. But
- 7:33Speaker 5: I think with Marshall, I don't know that the loss
- 7:36Speaker 5: for Marshall on Saturday was not as I mean, it's
- 7:41Speaker 5: still hurt because you knew if they won that game
- 7:43Speaker 5: that they would be Bowl eligible, and you and you
- 7:46Speaker 5: hope that they would they would get to that point.
- 7:48Speaker 5: But I think it was a closer game and people
- 7:51Speaker 5: felt like it gave him some hope, whereas and I'm
- 7:55Speaker 5: not saying people aren't hopeful about the Mountaineers, but I
- 7:57Speaker 5: just think that last loss of Texas Tech was ugly.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Yeah, and I would say going back to Marshall, and
- 8:02Speaker 6: you can also maybe make the argument that Marshall underachieved.
- 8:06Speaker 6: I mean, they should have beat they should have beat Ull.
- 8:10Speaker 6: That was a game they should have won. It was
- 8:11Speaker 6: another I think it was a coastal Carolina. I believe
- 8:14Speaker 6: that that was a tighter game than what they what
- 8:17Speaker 6: it should have been. So they they were probably in
- 8:20Speaker 6: about two or three games that they should have won
- 8:24Speaker 6: and they could have very well been Bowl eligible. I
- 8:27Speaker 6: think with w VU and again I know, like you know,
- 8:31Speaker 6: we have that's sort of our here in West Virginia,
- 8:34Speaker 6: our rabbit fan base. You know, it turns towards WVU.
- 8:38Speaker 6: But I think what people with WU fans aren't going
- 8:40Speaker 6: to have to consider is that we're now a men major.
- 8:44Speaker 6: If you think about in terms of what's going on
- 8:47Speaker 6: with n I, L Transfer Reporter blah blah blah blah blah,
- 8:51Speaker 6: you know, you're gonna have your big dogs like you know,
- 8:53Speaker 6: LSU and Georgia and and and you know in Texas
- 8:58Speaker 6: and those programs like that. W WVU simply does not
- 9:03Speaker 6: have the resources to compete with that. So they're going
- 9:06Speaker 6: to have to like think about this in a different way,
- 9:09Speaker 6: and expectations, to me are going to have to be
- 9:11Speaker 6: tempered a little bit, so you're not Again, if we
- 9:15Speaker 6: can get to a playoff run, we can get that scenario, good.
- 9:19Speaker 6: I think that's that's going to be an ultimate success.
- 9:22Speaker 6: But until we can start to match up some of
- 9:24Speaker 6: those resources or at least get some continuity among the
- 9:28Speaker 6: players in the program, it's going to be tough sledding.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I think to your point, and adding a little bit
- 9:34Speaker 4: to it, when you start looking at WU, and you
- 9:37Speaker 4: start looking at Marshall, when you start looking at your
- 9:40Speaker 4: top players, those top players are not satisfied. They don't
- 9:46Speaker 4: they're not looking for where we're going. They're looking They're
- 9:54Speaker 4: looking for where can I go and where can I
- 9:57Speaker 4: get paid? And so the problem with WU and Marshall
- 10:03Speaker 4: and being the star on that team you as a coach,
- 10:08Speaker 4: I'm thinking, the very first thing you have to do
- 10:11Speaker 4: is you're gonna have to find the money to pay
- 10:13Speaker 4: that guy to do my guy.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I gotta find a.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Way to pay him, him and you and my top
- 10:21Speaker 4: three or four guys.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I got to make sure I got money.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Lost our quarterback, mit, you know, a starting quarterback in lost,
- 10:28Speaker 6: and you know, and I would imagine those guys who
- 10:30Speaker 6: maybe get some All Conference recognitions, maybe if we can
- 10:33Speaker 6: get a one or two on the All American team,
- 10:35Speaker 6: them dudes are going to be gone.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Fortunately.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Yes, And that's what I was going to say to
- 10:40Speaker 5: speak to your point about expectations, Hollis, I feel like
- 10:43Speaker 5: what's going to happen is every once in a while,
- 10:46Speaker 5: I think WU may get a shot at at at
- 10:50Speaker 5: maybe you know, the playoff that but but it's going
- 10:53Speaker 5: to be short lived because what will happen, is what
- 10:55Speaker 5: you guys are saying, And it's totally true. These bigger
- 10:59Speaker 5: schools with more money and more more resources and better
- 11:02Speaker 5: facilities are going to swoop in and get those good
- 11:04Speaker 5: players off of that team. So excuse me, if that
- 11:08Speaker 5: team would happen to be able to make it to
- 11:11Speaker 5: a playoff and maybe make a little run. I don't
- 11:14Speaker 5: even know if we could make it to a national championship,
- 11:16Speaker 5: but if they would make a run, it will be
- 11:18Speaker 5: short lived.
- 11:18Speaker 6: So let me ask you this and we can move
- 11:21Speaker 6: to the conference championships schedule this weekend. What's the answer?
- 11:26Speaker 6: What's the answer? And again I'm gonna kind of answer
- 11:29Speaker 6: my own questions. I'll let you guys answer. I think
- 11:32Speaker 6: for me, the answer is like, we have to get
- 11:35Speaker 6: more homegrown talent.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:38Speaker 6: I know we're in a small state, and again even
- 11:40Speaker 6: that in and of itself is difficult to compete against
- 11:45Speaker 6: other you know, states who are going to get the
- 11:46Speaker 6: bulk of their talent and going to like an Alabama
- 11:49Speaker 6: or LSU or what have you. But we're gonna have
- 11:51Speaker 6: to get those kids. And if the kids even aren't
- 11:55Speaker 6: ready coming out of high school, I think it's going
- 11:58Speaker 6: to have to be some sort of network will we
- 12:00Speaker 6: work with like the UC's, the States, the Concords, the Fairmonts.
- 12:05Speaker 6: Get those kids ready on that level, let them show improved,
- 12:07Speaker 6: and then possibly filtering into the program like a w
- 12:11Speaker 6: v U or Marshall. But we're gonna really really have
- 12:14Speaker 6: to because and the reason I say that is because
- 12:17Speaker 6: those are the guys who are gonna be dedicated to
- 12:19Speaker 6: the program outside of n I.
- 12:21Speaker 4: L see and I man, I you are spot on,
- 12:28Speaker 4: But I don't think the players are spot I don't
- 12:31Speaker 4: think that they buy you anything.
- 12:32Speaker 2: They don't know. I don't know.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I'm thinking the homegrown guys don't care about Marshall or WVU.
- 12:40Speaker 4: That might be where I start at or stayed or
- 12:44Speaker 4: UC or whoever. This is where I'm starting. But I'm
- 12:48Speaker 4: I'm not interested in anybody other than if you give
- 12:52Speaker 4: me five dollars and lista's gonna get me teens. I'm out, man,
- 12:57Speaker 4: I think.
- 12:58Speaker 2: You're gonna ask. I think you're gonna have have some
- 13:00Speaker 2: loyalty there.
- 13:02Speaker 5: I mean that's the only way or something like that,
- 13:05Speaker 5: Like if your dad went to WU, Yeah, yeah, that
- 13:09Speaker 5: might be that would make a difference.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I think that that's possibly the only scenario scenario that
- 13:16Speaker 4: can keep a kid there because as soon as the
- 13:21Speaker 4: money comes. So let's say you you got a scholarship
- 13:25Speaker 4: to WU scholarship at Marshall, you you you're making let's
- 13:30Speaker 4: just say they're giving your twenty thousand dollars.
- 13:32Speaker 6: But I'm saying, you got to add that you've been
- 13:35Speaker 6: a fan of maybe that program your entire life. Your
- 13:38Speaker 6: your dad or your mom went to the school, and
- 13:40Speaker 6: you grew up going to the games. So I think
- 13:43Speaker 6: that could be somewhat of an answer.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I think that I think there's a lot of I
- 13:47Speaker 4: think there's a lot of conversation. There's a lot of
- 13:51Speaker 4: conversation about how that works. Yeah, but I seriously believe
- 13:59Speaker 4: that it's going to be a huge, huge, huge challenge
- 14:05Speaker 4: to keep players when there's money out there to be made,
- 14:11Speaker 4: because I'm going because now, let's just how many high
- 14:16Speaker 4: school athletes are out there who are thinking about money
- 14:22Speaker 4: all of the means they're not worried about they're not
- 14:27Speaker 4: worried about going to Marshall w w U UC.
- 14:31Speaker 6: So you're saying, like loyalty in the school is kind
- 14:33Speaker 6: of irrelevant. It's about where I can go get paid.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Because the loyalty is only going to get there when
- 14:39Speaker 4: you you're not sitting back at high school now in
- 14:44Speaker 4: the tenth grade and start thinking like, Okay, I want
- 14:48Speaker 4: to go to Marshall.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You know. That's my that's my thing. I want to
- 14:51Speaker 2: go to Marshall. And because of that, I'm so you're
- 14:57Speaker 2: saying kids aren't doing that, You don't. I think I
- 15:01Speaker 2: think they might be.
- 15:03Speaker 4: But the problem with that is, I'm only giving you
- 15:08Speaker 4: a certain amount of money. So as soon as Lisa
- 15:10Speaker 4: comes in, because as soon as Lisa starts talking to
- 15:14Speaker 4: me and saying, hey, Hollis, you know, not only are
- 15:18Speaker 4: we going to start you, we're going to start you
- 15:21Speaker 4: off paying you this amount of money, where are you going?
- 15:25Speaker 5: But I think the schools are trying to adopt that
- 15:28Speaker 5: maybe home grown type of philosophy. Look at their hires,
- 15:31Speaker 5: their coaches. They know the only chance they have to
- 15:34Speaker 5: compete in this collegiate world that we're in is to
- 15:37Speaker 5: have some home ties. And that's why they hired rich
- 15:39Speaker 5: Rod at WU. He's an alumni. And that's why they
- 15:42Speaker 5: got Tony Gibson at Marshall's because he's from you know,
- 15:45Speaker 5: West Virginia and attended Marshall. So you know, I think
- 15:49Speaker 5: that they have to give it a valiant effort.
- 15:52Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I guess, because that's their only chance
- 15:55Speaker 6: in a state like y'ad.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I think that's the only chance.
- 15:58Speaker 6: And I think the good thing about what we have
- 16:00Speaker 6: going is that we have a collegiate system as far
- 16:04Speaker 6: as the D two system, we have a strong D
- 16:06Speaker 6: two system here in West Virginia, unlike a lot of
- 16:09Speaker 6: other states, like if you look at state like Florida,
- 16:11Speaker 6: they don't necessarily have like D two schools, although they
- 16:13Speaker 6: have a bunch of other schools. But we could actually
- 16:16Speaker 6: use that D two systems and all the schools that
- 16:18Speaker 6: we have to build almost like a farm system.
- 16:21Speaker 2: So it's the kid.
- 16:22Speaker 6: He was the Kennedy Award winner Collins from Princeton receiver.
- 16:26Speaker 6: He was at WVU, went back, went to Concord, was
- 16:30Speaker 6: basically in the nation and receiving at one point. He's
- 16:33Speaker 6: back in the transfer portal and he and he stated
- 16:36Speaker 6: he's not unopposed to going back to WVU. So I
- 16:40Speaker 6: think if we could be creative and use kind of
- 16:43Speaker 6: what we have, we could build some loyalty. Again, I'm
- 16:46Speaker 6: not saying I can't discount anything you saying you exact
- 16:50Speaker 6: and correct that if the money's involved, they get blinded
- 16:54Speaker 6: by that and all that. Look, but it's not going
- 16:58Speaker 6: to fix. But I think it could be somewhat of
- 17:00Speaker 6: an answer to us. And I think the hell heck,
- 17:03Speaker 6: w v you and Marshall don't play. Maybe they could
- 17:05Speaker 6: start working together a little bit on these sort of
- 17:07Speaker 6: things to build that network.
- 17:09Speaker 5: I would think, Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't see that.
- 17:14Speaker 4: I don't see that that would I think that's a
- 17:16Speaker 4: great idea, But I don't see that.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I don't see that bond. Ever.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I think there's too much bad blood between those
- 17:25Speaker 5: I mean especially I just I don't. I don't see
- 17:28Speaker 5: that happening. But it would be. It would be a
- 17:30Speaker 5: good idea. Actually, if they could get over there.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Do you think that those two coaches their friends.
- 17:37Speaker 4: I was gonna say, yeah, if they could come together,
- 17:41Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, maybe they do well.
- 17:44Speaker 6: I mean, just like I think the school presidents. I
- 17:46Speaker 6: think if you look at President Smith and the new
- 17:48Speaker 6: president w v U, I'm looking at it from like
- 17:51Speaker 6: an administrative level, not the necessary Again, I'm not saying
- 17:55Speaker 6: that they like work together. As far as trading players
- 17:57Speaker 6: or anything like that. I'm just saying building that netw
- 18:00Speaker 6: work to say, hey, how can we make our institutions
- 18:03Speaker 6: football and athletics better?
- 18:04Speaker 2: A question to both of you.
- 18:08Speaker 4: If you had, if you had to try to figure out, like,
- 18:12Speaker 4: what would it take for Wu and Marshall to recruit
- 18:20Speaker 4: Heavenly West Virginia.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Is it worth their while or is it just not?
- 18:25Speaker 4: You know, is it you know, can they find enough
- 18:30Speaker 4: players that they can bring in play maybe as freshmen.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Or is it just not?
- 18:38Speaker 6: Are they just not far as freshmen? No, that that's
- 18:41Speaker 6: not realistic at this point. What I'm what I propose
- 18:44Speaker 6: early is that if we could figure out a way
- 18:47Speaker 6: to almost use our D two system as a farm system.
- 18:50Speaker 6: So they say, I have ten freshmen West Virginia kids
- 18:55Speaker 6: who I like, but I don't think they're ready.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So I'm gonna work with coach Penn. I'm gonna work
- 19:00Speaker 2: what you see.
- 19:00Speaker 6: You go there, spend a year or two there developing,
- 19:04Speaker 6: get better, show and proved, and then we'll reevaluate you again.
- 19:08Speaker 6: But I don't think we're going to get like this
- 19:10Speaker 6: mass influx of West Virginia freshmen.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I don't think our state's big enough, do you. I mean,
- 19:15Speaker 5: I don't think we have enough high schools to fill
- 19:19Speaker 5: that that complete void that they have at both schools.
- 19:22Speaker 5: As far as players go, well.
- 19:23Speaker 2: We don't have enough talented players per team. I just
- 19:27Speaker 2: don't think we have.
- 19:28Speaker 5: I just don't think we have enough. We don't student athletes. Yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 5: but and the transfer portal will always be a friend
- 19:35Speaker 5: for w and Marshall in this day and time. I
- 19:37Speaker 5: think just to play, you know, be able to bring
- 19:40Speaker 5: in players that are ready to play immediately, because what's
- 19:43Speaker 5: going to happen is your better players every year are
- 19:45Speaker 5: going to be picked up by the bigger schools with
- 19:47Speaker 5: more money, more opportunity, And then we've got to go
- 19:50Speaker 5: to the transfer portal in a hurry and fill those
- 19:53Speaker 5: needs as quickly as possible.
- 19:55Speaker 6: And I think, like I said, I don't think you know,
- 19:57Speaker 6: it's just the reality of modern college football. You're not
- 20:00Speaker 6: like filling teams with a bunch of freshmen no more.
- 20:02Speaker 6: But I think again, there's a pathway. But before we
- 20:06Speaker 6: go to break with us, uh, we got the college
- 20:09Speaker 6: conference championships coming up, so we can just if you
- 20:12Speaker 6: want to, we can make some little predictions. We got
- 20:15Speaker 6: the starting out with the American Atlantic athlet excuse me,
- 20:20Speaker 6: American Athletic Championship. We got North Texas and Tulane. Tulane
- 20:25Speaker 6: is number twenty four. North Texas is eleven and one,
- 20:29Speaker 6: led by a quarterback, mind you, who never started, who
- 20:32Speaker 6: never played in high school, didn't play. He was like
- 20:37Speaker 6: a third stringer. He's got a minimum time. Those in
- 20:40Speaker 6: the North Texas and it's like probably maybe gonna get
- 20:43Speaker 6: drafted in the next year or two, or at least
- 20:45Speaker 6: have a shot at the league. So who do we
- 20:47Speaker 6: got there, North Texas Tulane And you said the quarterback
- 20:50Speaker 6: was where North Texas?
- 20:51Speaker 2: I'm going North. I'm going to North Texas to I'm
- 20:56Speaker 2: all right.
- 20:57Speaker 6: Big twelve Championship. We got by U number eleven team
- 21:01Speaker 6: in the nation, Texas Tech, number fifteen team in the nation.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Big twelve Championship. Texas Tech can't go against Brian you.
- 21:08Speaker 5: You's got to go with Texas tex.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Right now, this is gonna be in Well, we'll do this.
- 21:14Speaker 6: We'll go acc Duke not rated. There's seven and five
- 21:18Speaker 6: against Virginia, number eighteen, ten and two.
- 21:22Speaker 2: We got Virginia.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna go with Virginia.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Virginia. I think I'll take Virginia. Now we're gonna get spicy.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Got number four Georgia, number ten Alabama SEC Championship.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Who we got I'm going, I'm going, I'm gonna I'm
- 21:37Speaker 2: gonna take a little risky. I'm going Georgia. You going Georgia? Yes?
- 21:41Speaker 5: And who's Georgia playing again?
- 21:42Speaker 2: Alabama?
- 21:44Speaker 5: I mean, I Georgia is so good every year they
- 21:47Speaker 5: just find a way to win. I'm gonna go with Georgia.
- 21:49Speaker 4: Two.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I thought Alabama should have got beaten
- 21:52Speaker 6: the Iron Bowl. Arburn gave that game away auburnd. They
- 21:55Speaker 6: just couldn't hold onto the ball. So I'm gonna go Georgia.
- 21:58Speaker 6: And then we got probably the the game of the
- 22:00Speaker 6: week has got the Big Ten Championship. We got number
- 22:04Speaker 6: one oh State against number two Indiana, who we got
- 22:08Speaker 6: both undefeated teams twelve and zero.
- 22:11Speaker 5: These built It pains me to say it, but I
- 22:14Speaker 5: think I think the Buckeyes will win. I mean, they're
- 22:16Speaker 5: just they're that good.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I mean, I gotta go. I kind of gotta go
- 22:20Speaker 2: there too. He man, I'm going for the upset. I'm going.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I mean, I would love I.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Would love it too.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, all right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna

- 23:34Speaker 4: We have a guest that's walked into the studio, so
- 23:38Speaker 4: we're excited about that. So Hollis is gonna introduce We
- 23:41Speaker 4: got our resident attorney talk.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Yeah, we're gonna talk about the Lane Kiffin situation. And uh, well,
- 23:50Speaker 6: I'll let you lead us off, Coach Lee to what
- 23:52Speaker 6: are your thoughts on that.
- 23:57Speaker 4: I feel like at some point we have to be
- 24:00Speaker 4: able to hold coaches in a space, like if you're
- 24:07Speaker 4: gonna sign this huge contract right at a school, then
- 24:13Speaker 4: to me, if it's gonna be guaranteed, then that means
- 24:16Speaker 4: you have to be You have to give up a guarantee.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Too, So you need to be able to be If.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Your contract is one hundred dollars for four years, then
- 24:27Speaker 4: that's what it is, and you can't you can't get
- 24:31Speaker 4: out of that without some kind of an issue, some
- 24:37Speaker 4: kind of is There has to be something that's gonna
- 24:39Speaker 4: hold you accountable because I signed with you, because you
- 24:43Speaker 4: came and talked to my mom and dad and sold
- 24:46Speaker 4: me on all of this great stuff.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And I come to you and I'm excited.
- 24:51Speaker 4: About playing for you, even if I'm sitting in the
- 24:54Speaker 4: vinch the first year, I'm thinking at some point I'm
- 24:55Speaker 4: gonna be playing and I'm gonna be playing for you,
- 24:59Speaker 4: and the next thing I know, you're leaving. And again
- 25:03Speaker 4: you don't, do you. My question is do you owe
- 25:07Speaker 4: the kids that you recruit? Do you owe them anything?
- 25:12Speaker 6: So okay, So so again I think I'm pretty emotion
- 25:16Speaker 6: about this. So I'm gonna let our attorney speak for us,
- 25:19Speaker 6: give us some logic on this and and tell us
- 25:21Speaker 6: sort of the ins and out and things that we
- 25:23Speaker 6: may not be considering before we.
- 25:24Speaker 2: All and before you say this, if there and is there?
- 25:29Speaker 4: Whenever you want to answer this, is there a possibility
- 25:32Speaker 4: that there are contracts that will come up eventually that
- 25:37Speaker 4: will hold players or coaches to that school so that
- 25:41Speaker 4: they don't leave.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Is that a possibility?
- 25:45Speaker 8: First of all, thank you all for having me.
- 25:47Speaker 5: He's right in the hot seat right out of the gate.
- 25:51Speaker 9: But the reality is, I think the problem that we
- 25:54Speaker 9: have is being created by the lack of leadership. I
- 26:00Speaker 9: think the real the problem is that we've had a
- 26:03Speaker 9: lack of leadership at the nc double A. That that
- 26:05Speaker 9: that that's the ultimately Yes, yeah, okay, And I say
- 26:09Speaker 9: that because with due respect, I think if anybody got
- 26:13Speaker 9: the offer that Lane Kiffin did.
- 26:15Speaker 8: They would they would let's just call space space yea.
- 26:20Speaker 6: So it was in the offer ninety one million dollars
- 26:23Speaker 6: for four or seven years, and I think he got
- 26:27Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars for nil per year.
- 26:30Speaker 9: And the twenty five million I think is probably equally
- 26:33Speaker 9: important to him because that gives him the ability to
- 26:36Speaker 9: win the national champions.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And that's twenty five per year, I believe. Yeah, that
- 26:40Speaker 2: is correct.
- 26:41Speaker 9: Well, from what I've read, that is correct. So I
- 26:43Speaker 9: say that because he's now as a mentor. He went
- 26:48Speaker 9: into the homes of these student athletes talk to their parents,
- 26:53Speaker 9: and now he was their mentor, and he has taught them,
- 26:57Speaker 9: and I mind you, he has taught them that you
- 27:00Speaker 9: must take the bigger, better deal every time. So why
- 27:04Speaker 9: should the student athlete be restricted this upcoming year? It's
- 27:08Speaker 9: January tewod to January sixteenth to enter the transfer portal? Yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 9: well why can't Why can't the student athlete talk middle
- 27:17Speaker 9: of the season.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Too, That's exactly right.
- 27:19Speaker 9: You see, if you're gonna do, you're gonna have it,
- 27:21Speaker 9: You're gonna have a set of rules.
- 27:23Speaker 8: Then what goes for the goose is good.
- 27:25Speaker 2: For the game.
- 27:25Speaker 6: And see that's my biggest problem. And to your point,
- 27:29Speaker 6: the NCAA, it should be disbanded. We don't need it anymore.
- 27:33Speaker 6: It is useless. It is it is a useless organization
- 27:37Speaker 6: that has failed over and over again to have any
- 27:41Speaker 6: foresight about what's going on. Because even if you look
- 27:45Speaker 6: at transfer port, you look at nil ten to fifteen
- 27:48Speaker 6: years ago, you could have gave players five to ten
- 27:51Speaker 6: grand a month out of a collective like sharing, like
- 27:55Speaker 6: far as, like the video games and the merchant and
- 27:57Speaker 6: all that you could have gave them, and we probably
- 27:59Speaker 6: wouldn't even be here right now. So my thing is
- 28:03Speaker 6: again to your point, Attorney Paul, that again it's a
- 28:07Speaker 6: difficult deal to turn to turn down. But I think
- 28:09Speaker 6: what has to happen is that we need to move
- 28:12Speaker 6: the clock. It's insane to me that a school would
- 28:17Speaker 6: be able to poach a coach prior to the playoffs.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Old missus going to the college football playoffs and you're
- 28:26Speaker 6: not going to coach the college for you could hire
- 28:30Speaker 6: a guy within the same conference, within the same conference,
- 28:36Speaker 6: you could just post the coach. I mean, this is
- 28:38Speaker 6: tampering in the NFL. So I think what has to
- 28:40Speaker 6: happen is that we need to move the season up.
- 28:43Speaker 6: So the season football season needs to start in July
- 28:47Speaker 6: and the football in the championship game needs to be
- 28:50Speaker 6: played January first. So to your point, when we have
- 28:54Speaker 6: the playoff, when we have the transfer portal window from
- 28:57Speaker 6: January tewond to January sixteenth, it could start free and clear,
- 29:01Speaker 6: so that way all the games are done. Because I
- 29:03Speaker 6: think basketball their transfer portal starts after March madness, Why
- 29:08Speaker 6: does the transfer portal starting when we're still having games
- 29:11Speaker 6: going on?
- 29:12Speaker 2: It makes no sense.
- 29:13Speaker 6: So again I would say either the NCAA has to
- 29:17Speaker 6: get get there together or just get out the way
- 29:22Speaker 6: and let the coaches and the college presidents in the
- 29:24Speaker 6: eighties do this.
- 29:25Speaker 9: The other thing they could do is push the transfer
- 29:27Speaker 9: portal back. And I agree with you on the transfer
- 29:30Speaker 9: portal should not be open when there is a game.
- 29:33Speaker 2: To be It shouldn't.
- 29:34Speaker 8: It should And the other thing is what happens if.
- 29:36Speaker 6: You let me say this though, The problem pushing it
- 29:39Speaker 6: back is that the semester's starting. So generally college semesters
- 29:43Speaker 6: are starting around at fifteen fourteen tenth, so between the
- 29:46Speaker 6: tenth and about the seventeenth their school starting, So.
- 29:51Speaker 9: Then we need to make an adjustment to have that
- 29:53Speaker 9: and accommodate that. And by the way, the same thing,
- 29:56Speaker 9: the same set of rules should apply to college coaches
- 30:00Speaker 9: ball coaches.
- 30:00Speaker 8: It should only open.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Up after that last.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Okay, totally good points, and yeah, I agree with the Hollis.
- 30:09Speaker 4: And I would say this, I don't know. I can't
- 30:15Speaker 4: imagine coaching a school supposedly and connected to it because
- 30:23Speaker 4: I'm connected to it. If I'm coaching it, I would
- 30:26Speaker 4: like to think that I'm connected to it. I'm connected
- 30:28Speaker 4: to it to the players. I don't understand how I
- 30:34Speaker 4: am negotiating a deal somewhere while we're still playing.
- 30:41Speaker 5: I think he had a history of this though, doesn't he. Yes, yes,
- 30:45Speaker 5: I mean this isn't surprising behavior from him, I think.
- 30:49Speaker 5: The only thing that and not to change the subject,
- 30:52Speaker 5: but I just want to get this out there because
- 30:54Speaker 5: it just crawls under my skin so much. But his
- 30:57Speaker 5: victim role he's playing right now that you know, Uh,
- 31:00Speaker 5: those mean old people at Old Miss won't let me.
- 31:03Speaker 5: They won't let me keep coaching the Rebels through the playoffs.
- 31:06Speaker 5: You know, well, you made a choice. You went to
- 31:08Speaker 5: their rival, you know, I mean exactly, You're either in
- 31:13Speaker 5: with our team or you're out. And buddy, you you
- 31:16Speaker 5: signed a contract, you decided your fate, you're done. You're
- 31:19Speaker 5: not coaching our team in the playoffs. You know, why
- 31:22Speaker 5: would why would they even consider that?
- 31:25Speaker 8: In addition, why would you want to keep him there?
- 31:28Speaker 9: So that because now you know he's got twenty five
- 31:30Speaker 9: million dollars in then I own money, he's gonna start
- 31:32Speaker 9: poaching those athletes that he wants.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And not to say that he can't anyway, but.
- 31:38Speaker 8: If he's in their ear for the next three weeks.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Oh, he's gonna take them anyway.
- 31:42Speaker 6: And see that's and that's sort of the other problem
- 31:44Speaker 6: when you have a situation like is, particularly with a
- 31:47Speaker 6: coach like Lane Kiffin who had this massive success. And
- 31:50Speaker 6: what we got to remember is that this is the
- 31:52Speaker 6: best season in old regular season an Old miss history
- 31:56Speaker 6: history history, and he's been there for sure. So what's
- 31:59Speaker 6: going to happen is that after this season he's going
- 32:02Speaker 6: to poach probably I would say at least five to
- 32:05Speaker 6: maybe fifteen players. So now not only did he sort
- 32:10Speaker 6: of wreck their playoffs by not coaching, after the season,
- 32:14Speaker 6: he's going to take a bunch of players, a bunch
- 32:16Speaker 6: of coaching the systems with him, and now he's going
- 32:19Speaker 6: to wreck their program and they're going to be where
- 32:21Speaker 6: Marshall and WB was this year.
- 32:23Speaker 2: So it's like it's like it's just a wrecking ball
- 32:26Speaker 2: all around. So well, it just.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Goes to prove again. I'm sorry to interrupted that. I
- 32:30Speaker 5: want to say, it just goes to prove again the
- 32:32Speaker 5: schools that have the most money, the biggest schools with
- 32:35Speaker 5: the most money, it's going to be a continual cycle
- 32:38Speaker 5: of this. Your team's you know, like an old mess
- 32:41Speaker 5: that although they're they're pretty prominent, but not in you know,
- 32:44Speaker 5: their football team hasn't been that great. But once they
- 32:47Speaker 5: get something rolling and they get a team building, somebody's
- 32:51Speaker 5: going to come in and take your coach and take
- 32:52Speaker 5: your players. I mean, that's just the cycle that we're
- 32:54Speaker 5: in in college football world.
- 32:56Speaker 8: Gusting, isn't that what happened to Marshall.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Laws That's exactly what I said, and it was don't
- 33:00Speaker 5: even have to wait to Finn Marshall for not playing
- 33:03Speaker 5: in a bowl game that they could not field a
- 33:06Speaker 5: team for I mean, it was insane.
- 33:08Speaker 4: When you can't all, right to your point, Lisa, when
- 33:11Speaker 4: you can't when you can't fill the team a respectable
- 33:15Speaker 4: team to play in the playoffs.
- 33:17Speaker 2: It's a safety issue.
- 33:18Speaker 4: There's a safety issue, and there's something huge, hugely wrong
- 33:25Speaker 4: with the system because you get everything in the season
- 33:29Speaker 4: to bof Now, all of a sudden, coach leaves, kids leave,
- 33:35Speaker 4: and you can't play. So even if I'm a kid
- 33:38Speaker 4: on the bench who probably wouldn't have played in the game,
- 33:41Speaker 4: I don't get the.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Experience that bowl game. And how could that even be possible.
- 33:47Speaker 9: Well, here's the good thing about the student athlete. As
- 33:50Speaker 9: long as it doesn't infringe on the transfer portal, you
- 33:53Speaker 9: can you can buy their loyalty. For example, a student athlete,
- 33:57Speaker 9: you pay them X number dollars for in ile. You have,
- 34:01Speaker 9: you know, one hundred dollars for in ale. They've got
- 34:04Speaker 9: the number of games in the season. You divide it,
- 34:06Speaker 9: but you have it so that they get fifty percent
- 34:10Speaker 9: through the season and fifty they get only they play
- 34:14Speaker 9: in the ball we go. So that way you can
- 34:17Speaker 9: at least control the student athlete. Now we have to
- 34:20Speaker 9: come up with a solution so that we can do
- 34:22Speaker 9: the coaches because it's not fair to their student athletes.
- 34:25Speaker 5: And they not design a contract when they signed coaches
- 34:28Speaker 5: that that would be Oh yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 6: They definitely design it, but who would sign it. That's
- 34:31Speaker 6: the problem if you give them that much money.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I mean, unless it's across the board, obvious, it would
- 34:40Speaker 4: have to be across the board players and coaches of.
- 34:43Speaker 2: What everybody can't do.
- 34:46Speaker 4: But why would My thing is, unfortunately, why would why
- 34:50Speaker 4: would the NCAA do that?
- 34:52Speaker 2: Why would they even think to do that?
- 34:53Speaker 4: At this point, Like it's to me, it's like it's
- 34:55Speaker 4: the wild, wild West, and they're okay with it. But
- 34:58Speaker 4: I don't think they're thinks this is just I'm telling you,
- 35:00Speaker 4: this is the most lame duck organization I've ever seen,
- 35:04Speaker 4: just to not have the foresighte to like even like
- 35:07Speaker 4: I said, just push the season back, excuse me, started
- 35:10Speaker 4: earlier so we don't run into this. Figure out some
- 35:13Speaker 4: accommodation for student athletes just in case they have to
- 35:16Speaker 4: start school a little late. Figure out something that we
- 35:20Speaker 4: can have a transfer report that's not going to be
- 35:22Speaker 4: in conflict with the season. Because what I'm saying to
- 35:25Speaker 4: your point, if we're talking about the player, because everybody's
- 35:28Speaker 4: focused on because I know what everybody Lane Kiffin, you
- 35:30Speaker 4: would have took the money. Everybody's so money centric, and
- 35:33Speaker 4: again it's a lot of money. It's a lot of
- 35:35Speaker 4: resources to have in order to try to win that championship.
- 35:39Speaker 4: But to your point, if I'm the starting tackle or
- 35:42Speaker 4: starting or not even a starting guy, maybe a guy
- 35:46Speaker 4: who's just going to play till his senior year, I
- 35:48Speaker 4: don't have NFL pedigree and aspirations, and this is my
- 35:52Speaker 4: opportunity to go to the playoffs to try to win
- 35:55Speaker 4: a national championship, to say, and a national chang say
- 35:58Speaker 4: I was on a national.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Chair or at least play.
- 36:01Speaker 6: So now that's going to be dented, and even their
- 36:05Speaker 6: ranking might be off because he's not coaching, and he
- 36:08Speaker 6: took the coaches and he took his coaches with him.
- 36:11Speaker 6: So what I'm saying is that this just hurts not
- 36:14Speaker 6: only the players, it hurts the program, but it also
- 36:17Speaker 6: hurts college football because we have just because I think
- 36:21Speaker 6: everybody is just greedy and we don't and we have
- 36:24Speaker 6: a governing organization with a lack of forethought about anything.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Well terrible.
- 36:30Speaker 5: According to Lane, he's not greedy and this was a
- 36:32Speaker 5: spiritual decision. In fact, if we could just play that
- 36:36Speaker 5: clip really quick, we need to play this because I
- 36:39Speaker 5: want these guys to hear it. This is actually what
- 36:41Speaker 5: he told a reporter today, if you don't mind playing it.
- 36:46Speaker 10: Yeah, just you know, there was there was something. This
- 36:49Speaker 10: is really hard. My heart was here, but I just
- 36:52Speaker 10: you know, talked to some mentors, Coach Carroll, Coach Saban,
- 36:56Speaker 10: you know, and especially when coach Carrol Saven your dad
- 37:00Speaker 10: tell you to go, man, take the shot, you know,
- 37:01Speaker 10: take the shot if you accomplished a lot here. You know,
- 37:04Speaker 10: I always felt I always hated how we only gave
- 37:07Speaker 10: one year to Tennessee and left. I really hated that
- 37:09Speaker 10: feeling of that, you know, even though its exciting year.
- 37:11Speaker 10: But you know, I think that we gave a lot
- 37:14Speaker 10: to this program, into the city and you know, some
- 37:17Speaker 10: of those historic wins in this stadium they ever had,
- 37:20Speaker 10: and best best regular season in the history of the school.
- 37:24Speaker 10: So I feel proud of that part. But it just
- 37:28Speaker 10: became time, you know. I talked to God and told
- 37:30Speaker 10: me it's time to take a new step. It's a new.
- 37:32Speaker 8: Chapter, exactly.
- 37:37Speaker 5: It has nothing to do with the five star recruits
- 37:40Speaker 5: waiting for him in New Orleans, right and the money
- 37:42Speaker 5: in the contract. It's all about God told God told
- 37:47Speaker 5: him that contract.
- 37:48Speaker 6: I said this last week. I do not believe LSU
- 37:52Speaker 6: is a better job than Old Miss, because I think
- 37:56Speaker 6: what's happening If you got ninety one million dollars over
- 37:59Speaker 6: how many as far as just your salary, and then
- 38:02Speaker 6: you have twenty five million dollars to spend on getting players,
- 38:06Speaker 6: the expectation is championship next year? Oh yeah, because it ain't.
- 38:12Speaker 6: It ain't good enough to just creep into the playoffs.
- 38:16Speaker 6: You better have a significant run and you better win
- 38:19Speaker 6: a championship within three years, or it's he's gonna find himself.
- 38:24Speaker 6: They're gonna end up paying a buyo. As opposed with
- 38:28Speaker 6: Old Miss. I think he could have been there for
- 38:30Speaker 6: the next fifteen to twenty years and been an absolute legend.
- 38:33Speaker 4: The question becomes, and I'll oppose, there have you today?
- 38:39Speaker 4: Am I interested in a long term contract? Or am
- 38:43Speaker 4: I just am I just wanting to be at a school,
- 38:45Speaker 4: make some money and go jump to.
- 38:48Speaker 2: The next money.
- 38:48Speaker 6: That's what it is. I mean, I think that's what
- 38:50Speaker 6: coaches are doing. They're they're getting a bag.
- 38:53Speaker 9: I think the coaches are doing that. I think doing that.
- 38:57Speaker 9: I mean, I think it's just universal, you know, But
- 39:00Speaker 9: to look at it. If you look at it from
- 39:01Speaker 9: the NCAA's perspective, what do they still focus on. Their
- 39:05Speaker 9: focus is still March madness. They generate over a billion
- 39:10Speaker 9: dollars a year for the organization just through that March madness.
- 39:15Speaker 9: When it comes to the college football, you've got other things.
- 39:20Speaker 9: They don't generate that revenue. So they're still focused right
- 39:24Speaker 9: now on basketball, and what they need to be focused
- 39:26Speaker 9: on is getting other jobs. Because I agree with what
- 39:30Speaker 9: you said, it's time for them to go.
- 39:31Speaker 6: It's time for them to go because even if those
- 39:33Speaker 6: beigions that they're generating, those could go to the schools,
- 39:36Speaker 6: and we can filter that money down to all like
- 39:39Speaker 6: a like a state or whoever like the detail. We
- 39:42Speaker 6: can start to filter that money down so everybody not
- 39:44Speaker 6: that can be on a you know, the same level.
- 39:47Speaker 6: But they can also have some resources to spend and
- 39:49Speaker 6: develop student athletes because I just don't think they're equipped.
- 39:54Speaker 6: They they they they just shown nothing good about them.
- 39:58Speaker 6: Like I said, they could have solved. We wouldn't be
- 40:01Speaker 6: in this problem if they would have just dealt with this.
- 40:03Speaker 6: Twenty years ago when Eddie O'Bannon had the lawsuit in
- 40:06Speaker 6: different things of that name do.
- 40:07Speaker 5: You replace them? I mean, what do you do? You
- 40:10Speaker 5: don't have a reigning.
- 40:11Speaker 6: Like I think you take the conferences and you you
- 40:15Speaker 6: have an ad or president or representing from like each
- 40:18Speaker 6: school and conference and that, and you just create the
- 40:21Speaker 6: board out of that. So it's like a like a
- 40:23Speaker 6: like a board of governance. So it's like not necessarily
- 40:26Speaker 6: that you're gonna like these aren't higher positions and it
- 40:30Speaker 6: rotates every Let.
- 40:33Speaker 4: Me ask this question what I'm not okay with. I
- 40:37Speaker 4: like what you're saying, but what I don't like is
- 40:40Speaker 4: who we're picking. I want someone I don't want. No,
- 40:46Speaker 4: I don't want coaches because because here's the problem I'm
- 40:50Speaker 4: fighting for. If you put me in a position to
- 40:52Speaker 4: fight for my rights, I'm gonna I'm gonna you know,
- 40:56Speaker 4: there's gonna be some things that I want. And so
- 40:59Speaker 4: you got all the coach just want money, and so I.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Want You're not gonna get anywhere because everybody's going to
- 41:06Speaker 5: be worried about their own.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Yes, everybody's gonna be wanting you know how So so
- 41:10Speaker 4: you want all coaches to get a No, I'm not
- 41:14Speaker 4: saying you, but hypothetically you want in that system you
- 41:19Speaker 4: want you want all the coaches to make a million dollars.
- 41:22Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying no, I know you're not saying that.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I'm just hypothetically.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Okay, so you want everybody to make a million dollars
- 41:28Speaker 4: as as as a coach, and it's a guaranteed amount
- 41:32Speaker 4: and it's for five years, right.
- 41:34Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying that though, No I'm not. I
- 41:37Speaker 2: keep telling you, I'm not putting it on it.
- 41:41Speaker 4: But what I'm trying to say is it is all
- 41:45Speaker 4: about what the coaches are wanting. When players argue about
- 41:50Speaker 4: what they need, there's always this fight. It's always a
- 41:55Speaker 4: fight when players, player safety, all these kinds of things
- 41:58Speaker 4: that players want, insurance, all that.
- 42:01Speaker 2: I mean, we don't, we don't. We don't jump on it.
- 42:04Speaker 11: But now, because it's so many coaches who are now
- 42:07Speaker 11: out here, who are quote considered great coaches, they have
- 42:12Speaker 11: an unlimited opportunity to make money and go whenever they want.
- 42:16Speaker 5: So they would make the rules in their favors.
- 42:20Speaker 9: I'm saying, I think the bigger issues, I think we
- 42:26Speaker 9: have to address the fundamental question first. I think the
- 42:29Speaker 9: first question is are they student athletes or are they
- 42:33Speaker 9: going to be semi pro pro athletes because if they're not,
- 42:36Speaker 9: if they're student athletes.
- 42:37Speaker 8: Going back to what you're.
- 42:38Speaker 9: Saying, then perhaps we should have educators that control the
- 42:42Speaker 9: n CUB A m miss teacher here.
- 42:45Speaker 8: But you see what I'm saying. So we have to
- 42:47Speaker 8: define what their role is going to be. Are they
- 42:50Speaker 8: going to be student athletes?
- 42:51Speaker 4: Are they going to be athletes you're rid of?
- 42:55Speaker 2: I asked this question. We talked about this a couple
- 42:57Speaker 2: of weeks back.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I asked, when's the last time you've heard of an
- 43:00Speaker 4: athlete be called a student athlete? What I'm saying, the
- 43:04Speaker 4: NBA says, when it's commedian, Yes, But for the most part,
- 43:08Speaker 4: if you're a football player, basketball player, baseball player, you
- 43:11Speaker 4: are a baseball player, you are a football player, you're
- 43:14Speaker 4: a basketball player. Ad no one's worried about when the
- 43:16Speaker 4: last time you heard anybody? When's the last time you
- 43:19Speaker 4: ever heard of somebody flunking out of school? So all
- 43:22Speaker 4: of a sudden, these great athletes are all great students.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I would almost say.
- 43:30Speaker 6: It's hard to do that because really, when you talk
- 43:33Speaker 6: about making them essentially employees, we're only talking about football,
- 43:39Speaker 6: men's basketball, women's basketball, because none of the other sports
- 43:42Speaker 6: make money, So it would be hard to say we're
- 43:45Speaker 6: just going to make these three sports employees and everybody
- 43:48Speaker 6: else y'all could be subject to the NC doublea's rules.
- 43:51Speaker 6: But what I'm saying as far as representation, if we
- 43:54Speaker 6: get rid of the NC Double A and we have
- 43:56Speaker 6: representation from each conference, that would maybe include an ad,
- 44:01Speaker 6: a coach, a player, athletes, that would include presidents, and
- 44:06Speaker 6: so it would be a collective body, a mixture of
- 44:09Speaker 6: individuals who have a vested interest in seeing this thing
- 44:13Speaker 6: go forward. Because I fear that where we're going, we're
- 44:17Speaker 6: going to a bad place, because we're going to a
- 44:19Speaker 6: point where it's they're just going to be employees for
- 44:22Speaker 6: those three sports. They're going to get rid of the
- 44:24Speaker 6: student you know, indication after a while, because it's just
- 44:28Speaker 6: like you said, it's just it's nonsense that we do that.
- 44:30Speaker 6: I mean, you got players making millions of dollars, You
- 44:33Speaker 6: got a twenty you got a coach right now with
- 44:35Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars to spend on student athletes.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Some believable.
- 44:40Speaker 9: And thinking of it this way, imagine if they took
- 44:43Speaker 9: that twenty five million dollars, you could have twenty five
- 44:46Speaker 9: hundred students that got ten thousand dollars years scholarships. Crazy, Yeah,
- 44:53Speaker 9: in a in a small, poor state like West Virginia,
- 44:56Speaker 9: that would be great.
- 44:56Speaker 8: It would help these students here in this state. Same
- 45:00Speaker 8: with Mississippi.
- 45:01Speaker 4: But we are focused on the top notch players because
- 45:08Speaker 4: the money is we're talking about the money. But when
- 45:12Speaker 4: we're talking about the money, we're talking about who we're
- 45:15Speaker 4: talking about the best players at whatever that level is.
- 45:20Speaker 2: So that that next tier player, what's he get? You
- 45:26Speaker 2: know what I'm saying limited out But I would tell
- 45:30Speaker 2: you again not to be a hater.
- 45:34Speaker 6: But I don't even know if that's going to guarantee
- 45:36Speaker 6: you a championship because when we talk about having those
- 45:40Speaker 6: sort of resources, like at a pro level, you have
- 45:42Speaker 6: a GM between that coach and that player, right right,
- 45:45Speaker 6: You have a GM that has a different eye than
- 45:48Speaker 6: the coach. So if you're just giving the coach to
- 45:50Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars just because you have a collection
- 45:53Speaker 6: of talent does not guarantee that you're gonna win on Saturdays.
- 45:57Speaker 6: We've seen that it's not always the most talented team
- 46:00Speaker 6: that's just gonna win. And and I would just be
- 46:03Speaker 6: very careful about giving a coach a blank paycheck.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Well, because to that point, I'm gonna use you as
- 46:12Speaker 4: an example. So you are the player on the team
- 46:18Speaker 4: that I know as a coach who manages some stuff
- 46:23Speaker 4: in and behind the curtain that you don't see. You
- 46:26Speaker 4: might not see it on Saturday, you might not see
- 46:27Speaker 4: it on Sunday, you might not see it on Friday.
- 46:29Speaker 4: But I realized how valuable you are to the team.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Am I gonna pay you for that saying?
- 46:38Speaker 4: Because the other there's the other guy who's the great
- 46:42Speaker 4: athlete to struggling with his grades. So he's me hanging out.
- 46:50Speaker 4: He's hanging out. He he's barely making through his grades.
- 46:53Speaker 4: He's just wanting to have fun and play ball. But
- 46:56Speaker 4: he's so good. Who am I gonna give the most?
- 47:00Speaker 4: I mean, you gotta give it to the guy with
- 47:02Speaker 4: the talent. But to your point, I think that's where
- 47:04Speaker 4: the management comes into place, because you gotta figure, you
- 47:08Speaker 4: gotta have some team guys, you gotta have the leadership,
- 47:11Speaker 4: you gotta have some talent, you gotta have a good mix.
- 47:14Speaker 2: But see, I don't think I don't think they're mixing.
- 47:16Speaker 4: I think they're I'm thinking they're taking the top players
- 47:19Speaker 4: and just throwing just throwing money at and the guy
- 47:22Speaker 4: who's the guy who's sitting back there, who we think
- 47:26Speaker 4: is going to be pretty good man. But he's a
- 47:28Speaker 4: leader and he's you know, he's dealing with the kids
- 47:31Speaker 4: to make sure everybody's doing everything.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Okay, we ain't paying.
- 47:35Speaker 9: Him well, I think I think moving forward, you do
- 47:37Speaker 9: need to have a general manager for these sports. You
- 47:40Speaker 9: got to have somebody that's looking at it strictly from
- 47:42Speaker 9: a business perspective and statistical perspective. I mean, if you
- 47:45Speaker 9: look at it, and I don't mean to throw anyone
- 47:47Speaker 9: under the bus, but you look at arch Manning. Okay, yes,
- 47:50Speaker 9: he had a good win this past weekend over text
- 47:52Speaker 9: A and M He got eight million dollars for three losses.
- 47:55Speaker 8: I mean eight million dollars.
- 47:57Speaker 9: I mean, come on now, we apparently Worby part wasn't
- 48:00Speaker 9: giving him the right glasses.
- 48:02Speaker 8: He didn't see what to do.
- 48:04Speaker 9: The reality is we have to look at it from
- 48:07Speaker 9: a business objective perspective, and this is where data analytics
- 48:12Speaker 9: comes in. This is where you get a business person
- 48:14Speaker 9: in there to help make those decisions.
- 48:17Speaker 8: Because the coach is gonna just.
- 48:19Speaker 9: He may he or she may get emotional to decide
- 48:21Speaker 9: to pay somebody something that it turns out not to
- 48:23Speaker 9: be what it was worth.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 48:26Speaker 6: I just I think it's not going to be as
- 48:29Speaker 6: easy as what people think managing twenty five million dollars.
- 48:33Speaker 6: And I would say I lived in Louisiana. I lived
- 48:36Speaker 6: ten minutes from LSU. If we think WVU has a
- 48:41Speaker 6: rabbit fan base, we don't know.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 48:45Speaker 6: When you talk about LSU and Southern University, them two schools,
- 48:50Speaker 6: they have just fan bases that are on a next
- 48:53Speaker 6: level and the expectation is championship or bus. They may
- 48:58Speaker 6: not be saying it now, but when twenty twenty six
- 49:01Speaker 6: rolls around, it's going to be all right, what when
- 49:04Speaker 6: are we getting getting the camp and we're making the
- 49:06Speaker 6: gumbo to go to the championship or whatever it's going
- 49:09Speaker 6: to be at I'm telling him that's that's that's the expectation,
- 49:13Speaker 6: and it's it's And like I said, I just think
- 49:17Speaker 6: to your point, even when we talk about coaches, as
- 49:19Speaker 6: a coach, if you're coming up now, are you just
- 49:22Speaker 6: thinking about how to cash out and get the biggest
- 49:25Speaker 6: bag possible or are you thinking or is there any
- 49:28Speaker 6: coaches that thinking about legacy. Are you thinking about, Hey,
- 49:31Speaker 6: I'm going to be at the school for fifteen years,
- 49:34Speaker 6: we might win some championships, might go to the playoffs.
- 49:36Speaker 6: Are coaches even thinking that way now?
- 49:39Speaker 2: Like players?
- 49:40Speaker 5: No, I was just going to say, I think coaches
- 49:42Speaker 5: probably have good intentions, Like in the in the case
- 49:45Speaker 5: of Lane Kiffin when he when he went to Ole Miss,
- 49:47Speaker 5: I think he felt like, Okay, they're paying me good money.
- 49:51Speaker 5: We've got a winning season here. Lsu approached him with
- 49:55Speaker 5: this offer and it was probably just an offer that
- 49:58Speaker 5: he an offer he couldn't refuse us, right, all the
- 50:00Speaker 5: money that's generational wealth, and so he's definitely at fault.
- 50:06Speaker 5: He's not a victim. But yet these schools are approaching
- 50:09Speaker 5: these coaches mid season or at the end of the
- 50:11Speaker 5: season when they're getting ready to enter the playoff you
- 50:14Speaker 5: know scenario, and giving them an offer that you know
- 50:18Speaker 5: he couldn't walk away from.
- 50:20Speaker 9: And not only did he get the generational wealth, imagine
- 50:22Speaker 9: twenty five million dollars. To put it in perspective, that's
- 50:25Speaker 9: almost a quarter million dollar per athlete on the team.
- 50:29Speaker 8: Just just so you put it on more than that,
- 50:33Speaker 8: just you put it in perspective.
- 50:35Speaker 9: Wow, if you have one hundred and five students on
- 50:37Speaker 9: a football team, You've got almost quarter million dollars.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Wow. Wow, I just just per year too. That's a
- 50:46Speaker 2: lot of money. Yeah, that's a that's a ton. That's
- 50:48Speaker 2: a ton of money.
- 50:49Speaker 6: Imagine be a seventeen years old and you got a
- 50:52Speaker 6: quartermal or I.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Don't even know how to count it and how to
- 50:56Speaker 2: count it.
- 50:56Speaker 5: You think about these young kids that that's a lot
- 50:59Speaker 5: of money too, to be you know, laid at their
- 51:01Speaker 5: feet and be able to handle.
- 51:03Speaker 6: And and that's just could just be a base that
- 51:07Speaker 6: computer they make.
- 51:10Speaker 4: And and again we talk about you know, athletes football
- 51:15Speaker 4: specifically about low income families where they come from. It's great,
- 51:20Speaker 4: it's it's a great thing for those families because it's
- 51:23Speaker 4: changing the whole dynamics of those of those families. But
- 51:27Speaker 4: it is, but it is totally something different into the
- 51:32Speaker 4: sport itself, because to me, it just doesn't seem it
- 51:38Speaker 4: just doesn't seem right.
- 51:39Speaker 2: It just doesn't.
- 51:40Speaker 4: I mean, and and and there's some there's some folks
- 51:42Speaker 4: out there is probably gonna be like, oh man, he's
- 51:44Speaker 4: just he's just mad because he didn't get it. Yeah,
- 51:47Speaker 4: I am mad at you, but I just don't.
- 51:50Speaker 2: I don't see how it's going to make.
- 51:54Speaker 4: It's going to make players just be happy with the game,
- 51:59Speaker 4: just happy about the game. It's about the Like I'm
- 52:02Speaker 4: in the game now because I want the money and
- 52:06Speaker 4: I'm hoping to get the money.
- 52:08Speaker 2: I think, go ahead.
- 52:10Speaker 9: What we keep talking about football? But what about University
- 52:13Speaker 9: Kentucky twenty one million dollars for their basketball team this season?
- 52:19Speaker 2: Wow? Twelve to fifteen players? Is that the resources that
- 52:24Speaker 2: they have or that's.
- 52:25Speaker 6: What they're paying out, that's what they're paying out that
- 52:27Speaker 6: they're paying that out to the basketball team.
- 52:29Speaker 8: That's what I read.
- 52:30Speaker 6: Wow, see and that's even less players, Yes, a mix
- 52:35Speaker 6: of fifteen right?
- 52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so East got could get over a meal.
- 52:40Speaker 5: Well, I believable.
- 52:43Speaker 4: But it speaks again, it speaks to the money that's
- 52:47Speaker 4: in sports that you just you just never think about,
- 52:51Speaker 4: that's been floating around out there. Whoever's been clearing that money,
- 52:55Speaker 4: whoever's been getting that money, whether it's the school, whether
- 52:57Speaker 4: it's the organizations, whatever, they're comfortable enough now, but to
- 53:02Speaker 4: throw that kind of money back to the app and
- 53:05Speaker 4: I guess the bigger like what does it do for?
- 53:07Speaker 4: Like how does that kick back to the school in
- 53:10Speaker 4: any way. I mean, I guess you know, if you're
- 53:12Speaker 4: Kentucky l s U, Right, you're getting that publicity from
- 53:16Speaker 4: you know.
- 53:17Speaker 5: Well, if you're going to championships and winning, you got
- 53:20Speaker 5: the alumni happy, the alumni will donate more money.
- 53:22Speaker 9: Right.
- 53:22Speaker 6: Would you get fatigued though, like because you would have,
- 53:26Speaker 6: you would literally you're gonna get hit up every scene.
- 53:30Speaker 5: But if you're winning, nothing matters. If you're a man,
- 53:34Speaker 5: if you've got that kind of money tigue.
- 53:37Speaker 2: After a while, don't call me. I don't have that
- 53:39Speaker 2: kind of money. I'm unlisted. Don't call me.
- 53:46Speaker 4: I'm not helping because and I'm not helping. And I've
- 53:48Speaker 4: said this before, I'm not helping because nobody paid me.
- 53:51Speaker 4: I had to work to pay my to get paid.
- 53:53Speaker 4: So I'm but but even with that, you should have
- 53:56Speaker 4: been paid something. Everybody who aid a college sport at
- 54:02Speaker 4: some level, particularly if you know what they used to say,
- 54:04Speaker 4: you know what, that's just something did you get your
- 54:07Speaker 4: school paid for?
- 54:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's not the value.
- 54:12Speaker 1: School.
- 54:13Speaker 2: I see the value of that at all. The value
- 54:16Speaker 2: of that is plumbinging.
- 54:17Speaker 4: So because the reality to this, and I know we
- 54:21Speaker 4: got to go the reality of that is me sitting
- 54:25Speaker 4: in a class doesn't cost any more money for that class,
- 54:31Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, So like that, there's nothing
- 54:34Speaker 4: I mean, there is no cost to a class when
- 54:37Speaker 4: when when you put two athletes in there, that's not
- 54:40Speaker 4: going to cost the school any amount of money. Right
- 54:44Speaker 4: because whether you're there or not, profess is going to
- 54:47Speaker 4: be there going to be that I don't know.
- 54:49Speaker 3: Man.
- 54:50Speaker 2: All right, well this this.
- 54:54Speaker 4: We'll get back on this top getting I'm sure before this,
- 54:57Speaker 4: before the seasons up.
- 54:58Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we appreci hey you listening,
- 55:00Speaker 2: and we will be back again next week
