- 1:30up the very last card round mystery we have. And now it's time for
- 1:34us to take a Listen to Part five of the Open Down Matter from Hollywood
- 1:41It's time now for Johnny Dollary. It's me, Johnny Ry. Yeah.
- 1:49How is he all about the same? Doctor Watin just gave him another transfusion?
- 1:55Has he been able to say anything yet? He hasn't even been conscious?
- 2:00Why, Marty? Who's there with you? Joe Craley in the City
- 2:02attorney. Look, Johnny, I've got to talk to you right away,
- 2:07all right, go ahead and talk, not on the phone, all right,
- 2:09It's room six o four City Hospital. Come on over not with them
- 2:14there. Why don't you come meet me? Because Shorty Wells is the key
- 2:16to this whole case. If he's able to talk before he dies. I
- 2:20want to be here to listen. Suppose I tell you I'm ready to talk,
- 2:23Johnny? Are you telling me? I'm in an all night lunch room
- 2:28right across the street from the hospital, and you come over here, all
- 2:31right, Marty, I'll gamble with you. Be there in five minutes tonight
- 2:43and every weekday night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with
- 2:46the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator. Yours to Lee Johnny
- 2:53Doller from special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Green Sports Missouri to the home Office
- 3:10Great Plains Guarantee Company, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the Open Town Meta expense
- 3:16account final page. I hung up the phone more puzzled than ever. And
- 3:24heaven knows, the case had been puzzling from the start. Marty Blake,
- 3:29young widow of the murdered police chief, had been completely uncooperative and unwilling to
- 3:31talk, and now she was reversing her field. Why her house had burned
- 3:38to the ground earlier in the evening, and Shorty Wells, number one on
- 3:40the City attorneys Wanted for murder list, had been found trapped in the flames.
- 3:45Maybe this had something to do with Marty's phone call. She'd been my
- 3:49number one suspect at first, since she stood to collect fifty thousand dollars as
- 3:52beneficiary of her husband's life insurance. But then the city attorney himself, Dave
- 3:57Sherman, had provided her with an airtight alibi. I'd reluctantly let her off
- 4:00the hook. Now this, I didn't know what she was up to,
- 4:03and I couldn't afford not to find out something up. Dolly, I was
- 4:09Mardy Blake, mister Sherman. She's at a lunch room across the street.
- 4:12She wants to see me. Oh what about she didn't say, we'll go
- 4:15ahead and talk to if you want to, Johnny, I'll call you,
- 4:17Shorty starts to regain consciousness. All right, thanks, Joe. I'm sticking
- 4:20right here myself. That's one I'm going to follow personally. Well, if
- 4:25you really want to break the rackets in this town, your answer is lying
- 4:28right there in that bed, short He wells. I think you're right if
- 4:30he's ever able to talk, and if your police laddies don't fall over their
- 4:33own feet again the way they did on that gun business when Ed Lake was
- 4:36shot, mistake was partly justified. Joe, the chief song gun that was
- 4:42lying beside his body was natural to us, so that he'd exchanged shots for
- 4:46the product. Yeah, but two days to realize he'd been shut with his
- 4:48own gun. All right, all right, they fouled up by a minute,
- 4:51and the ones who aren't stupid are crooked. Every raid to try to
- 4:54pull has been tipped off. Even when Mayor Lyons brought in state police.
- 4:59The whole plan was tipped, which you took great pleasure in pointing out in
- 5:01your new story. You guys, look now I'll leave you to to settle
- 5:04this. Stick on this guy like a leech, and if he shows any
- 5:08sign of coming to and talking, let me know right away when you network
- 5:11could. Yeah, I'll see you lady back here in the booth, Johnny.
- 5:30Right, Wow, what's on your mind? Money? Sit down?
- 5:38Johnny? Here, come on, I'm not well. The waiters in back.
- 5:45If you'd like some coffee or something? No, thanks, Okay,
- 5:48Now what is it? What is what? You had to talk to me?
- 5:53Right away? How I talk? Johnny? I'm not too hard to
- 5:59take him. I no, Oh, you're a pink and gold doll,
- 6:04wild honeysuckle and a handful of stars. At least that's what a couple of
- 6:09guys said today. I don't care what a couple of guys said. What
- 6:14do you say, Johnny? I guess the description fits as far as looks
- 6:17are concerned. And if that's all you want to talk about, No,
- 6:20no, Johnny, I'm in the clear on this. You know that the
- 6:25night my husband was killed, I've got an alibi and nobody could shake right.
- 6:29Well, I'm pretty well convinced you didn't pull a trigger, if that's
- 6:31what you mean, And you could convince the insurance company too, couldn't you
- 6:35if you would? Oh? Yeah, yeah, they go pretty much in
- 6:39my reports. But I don't. Why don't we get this settled and over
- 6:43with. Why don't you be nice Johnny and turn in a real good report.
- 6:47Oh so that's the pitch. Well, it's not a pitch. I
- 6:49didn't do it, So why can't you tell them? So? Why don't
- 6:53we get some more answers first to a lot of questions. Explain a few
- 6:56odd angles, maybe, Like what like the fact that you heard the noise
- 7:00and woke up, that you sent your husband downstairs, that you turned on
- 7:03the light behind him and made him a perfect target for whoever held a gun,
- 7:06Johnny, Like the fact that you found your insurance claim less than twenty
- 7:10four hours after your husband was killed. Suppose we hear what Shorty Wells has
- 7:14to say before I make any report. What if Shorty dies without talking,
- 7:20Well, in that case, I guess you will be in the clear,
- 7:24because right now he's the only lead I've got down. If you excuse him,
- 7:28Johnny, make that report, make it now. Sorry, I'll give
- 7:30you ten thousand dollars out of the insurance. You are anxious, aren't you?
- 7:34I just want to get it settled. Sit down, Johnny, and
- 7:38let's talking about it. Yeah, Joe, what is it? Fire?
- 7:41Then I just came by the hospital, Johnny. They found out why Shorty
- 7:45fired those shots just before he ran out of the blazing house. Why that
- 7:48cellar door was pad locked on the outside. He had to shoot the lock
- 7:51off to get out. Then he probably didn't set the fire after all,
- 7:56not if he was locked in the basement. Not that Marty. Was he
- 8:01the one who was supposed to die in the fire, If he was hiding
- 8:05out in my cellar, I didn't know anything about it. Just another one
- 8:07of those hard angles. Huh. Oh, stop it, Johnny. By
- 8:11the way, Uh, what do you want to see me about? See
- 8:13you boy? What do you mean? Well? Yeah, the nurse said
- 8:16you've phim in the hospital, said you wanted me to meet you here?
- 8:20You mean you didn't come on, Joe, let's get back there. Sure,
- 8:28that's why she wanted me to meet her there, to get me away
- 8:31from that room. And somebody phone and got you away. Elevators coming down,
- 8:35now, Johnny. Shorty's the one big threat to whoever's gilly. They
- 8:39know that if he talks their tag and get up to his room, I
- 8:43thought, Sherman leaving. Yes, somebody phoned. It's the mayor. He
- 8:48wants me to meet him across the streets. Anybody up there with Shorty wells?
- 8:52Doctor will be back in a few moments. Sherman back into the air.
- 8:54A minute. I got to meet six floor another six may I asked,
- 8:58what going on here? I haven't got time to go back upstairs.
- 9:01I told you you'll have to take time, mister Sherman. It was all
- 9:05right to leave. Dollar, surety wasn't showing any signs of coming to Did
- 9:09you make sure that that look? Dollar, I don't hit what you're driving?
- 9:13Ye? Come on now let's go. Would somebody please let me in
- 9:16on this. Let's take a look at Shorty first, mister Sherman, Johnny,
- 9:20what happened to the COPO was on duty? Was here in the hall
- 9:22when I left. Just a moment ago, I got to walk down to
- 9:24the Did you leave that dora jar mister Sherman, No, no, of
- 9:30course not. Come but quietly, are we interrupting something? May Alliance?
- 9:37Well? What do you do with that pillar? Nothing? Nothing? I
- 9:41wasn't doing the thing we were holding a down over Shorty his face out of
- 9:43the way. I think you were Shorty's dead. You smothered him? Were
- 9:52that pillow? No, he was, he was dead when I came in,
- 9:54I was. I was just moving the pillow. Dave. Did you
- 9:56have to get us all out of this room and then send the police?
- 9:58Gud away? Just a mover a pillow? Start? Dollar? Are you
- 10:01suggesting? Well, I'm suggesting it for one dollar. I've been sure for
- 10:05months that may Alliance was back of the rackets here, but I didn't have
- 10:07any way of proving it until now, Perhaps until now, Mayor very well,
- 10:13don't move any of you them. Oh no, wait a minute.
- 10:15That gun isn't really your ansom. Mayor. There are three of us.
- 10:16You know you can't get us all. Tell me something. Why did you
- 10:20have ed Blake killed? Wasn't he one of your own boys? I can
- 10:24tell you why now that Blake was going to pull out of the rackets dollar
- 10:28and spill the whole setup to me, that was the reason for that fishing
- 10:31trip. Then it must have been Marty who tipped off may Alliance. Sure
- 10:35sure, it figures she loved that racket money that it was bringing home,
- 10:39and surely was was in town with a grudge against that already. It was
- 10:43real convenient for you, wasn't it, Mayor, As a matter of fact,
- 10:46Dave, it was very convenient. Then Shorty hit out in the cellar
- 10:50of Mary's house until she decided things would be less complicated if she locked the
- 10:52cellar door and burned the house down. Marty was a weak link, you
- 10:54might say. She stayed back, Dave, are you better give me the
- 10:58gun now? No, get back to what he says, Mayor, you
- 11:01haven't a chance. I'm warning you tell her if you try. I hear,
- 11:05but I doubt if you can go over there, drop it and go
- 11:09off. No thanks, Now you got us getting away. What don't you
- 11:15never stop being akout that we don't you try it six floors down? Yeah,
- 11:33well he got out of being prosecuted. As a matter of fact,
- 11:39there's nobody left to prosecute. You want a bit. She was still sitting
- 11:50there in the lunchroom across the street from the hospital, and she'd heard what
- 11:54had happened. I knew it the second day, and I walked in from
- 11:56a half smile of triumph on her face from the way she greeted me,
- 12:03Too bad, Johnny, You should have taken my offer because I don't need
- 12:05your help. Now your company's going to have to pay off. I'm really
- 12:11in the clear now you are. Huh. And poor Dave when nobody left
- 12:16to prosecute, he still has you, Marty accompliced to your husband's murder.
- 12:22Aunt Johnny sure he died without talking. May Lyons is dead. No witnesses,
- 12:28no case. Sorry, Marty, there is a witness. Oh who
- 12:33you? What are you talking about? What's that paper? Well you intended
- 12:39it to be an insurance claim, but actually it's more of a confession signed
- 12:43and witnessed. What you are over anxious, Marty, and you fell it
- 12:48out in complete detail. It says we found my husband's body at the foot
- 12:54of the stairs. That's right, that he'd been shot and killed with his
- 12:58own gun. True, isn't it. That's what happened. Yeah, But
- 13:01this claim was in the main office of the insurance company less than twenty four
- 13:05hours after your husband was killed. The police didn't find out he'd been shot
- 13:11with his own gun until two days later. Real neat confession a Marty expense
- 13:24account at him twelve three hundred and ten dollars and forty five cents incidentals in
- 13:28Greensport and transportation back to Hartred Expense account total five hundred and sixteen dollars and
- 13:33twenty cents end of account and of report remarks Marty Blake never was able to
- 13:41explain how she knew about that gun. She sure tried. Yours truly,
- 13:46Johnny Dollar. Now here's a start to tell you about next week's story.
- 14:03Before I do that, please let me say thanks to all of you who
- 14:05are so kind about writing and telling us how much you like Johnny Dollar.
- 14:09It's a very gratifying experience. It's encouragement to all of us who are involved
- 14:13in production of the program, and we appreciate your letters more than you know.
- 14:18As always, I'll try to answer you promptly, but sometimes the mail
- 14:20does pile up. In any event, Thanks, thanks very much for writing
- 14:26next week. A yacht that wasn't there and a man who wasn't there.
- 14:31They never were, but that's where I found them. Join us, won't
- 14:35you? Yours truly, Johnny Dollar? Yours truly, Johnny Dollar, starring
- 14:50Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. It is written by Les Crutchfield and
- 14:54produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in this week's cast where Gene Him,
- 15:00Paul Dubov, Joseph Kern, Stacy Harris, and Russell thorson musical supervision
- 15:05by Amigo Marino. Be sure to join us on Monday night, same time
- 15:09and station for another exciting story of yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking
- 16:14welcome back. Well, that the only thing I didn't like about the end
- 16:18there was that we had that detail of the confession, but he didn't really
- 16:23catch it until crunch time. Still, I thought it was interesting in the
- 16:27mirror as the person involved, I think was definitely a was definitely as a
- 16:36good stroke you could the one. The only thing that gave it away to
- 16:40me was that the mayor was the only one he didn't question for whatever reason.
- 16:47I also thought the part about where at the end where he thanked people
- 16:51for their letters was really nice and definitely speaks well for him that he actually
- 17:00personally answered letters sent to the show. Well, now we do turn to
- 17:04listener comments and feedback, and we have a tweet from Justin who says,
- 17:08how many episodes of Johnny Dollar do you have left? Of Bob Bailey,
- 17:17Well, we have twelve more weeks. We're going to be doing these multi
- 17:22part stories, and for Bob Bailey himself, we have after those twelve weeks,
- 17:32one hundred and eighty episodes, give or take, so we'll be listening
- 17:38to Bob Bailey for at least close to another four years. So a lot
- 17:45of great programing ahead. Well, now it's time to wrap up the very
- 17:51last Carter Brown case. Kudos for calling part four Carter Brown Mysteries, Adventures
- 18:12and Excitement and Suspense, based on the best selling novels by the slick storytelling
- 18:18sensation Carter Brown. I had lived up to my reputation the smart private eye
- 18:37Joe Karn, a clever character. I'd found the girl I was hired to
- 18:41look for, Helen Duisburg Daisy, and I had come to Tuluth for Mailer's
- 18:47Club, the Arabian Nights. I figured that was where he was hiding hell
- 18:49and I was right. But what I hadn't figured on was someone else who
- 18:53was looking for Helen, A smooth guy called Earl Courtez who appeared in the
- 18:57dressing room with a gun. Please do not make any trouble, mister Kahan.
- 19:02For one thing, I should have to shoot you, and for another,
- 19:03we have your girlfriend was with you at the table, and her safety
- 19:07is dependent on your behavior. Okay, curt Is, looks like it's all
- 19:11yours. It certainly is. Stand quite still, please, mister Kahan.
- 19:15You are probably carrying a gun, and I would feel safer if it were
- 19:18in my position. That's better. Now what now? We will wait in
- 19:25the corridor while Missus Jewsburg here gets dressed. Then we will take a short
- 19:30journey. Please be quick, Missus Jewsburg. That's right, mister Kahan,
- 19:36just stand in front of me while we wait. Tell me certain how did
- 19:40you find out that Helen was here at the Arabian Nights? I have my
- 19:44sources of information, mister Kahan. Where's your sister in this You will see
- 19:48her shortly at the moment she is taking care of your girlfriend. Oh,
- 19:55you don't sound very pleased about that, you are quiet? Rights can be
- 20:00rather unpleasant. Ah, you are ready, Missus Chewsberg. Explain me.
- 20:07Now we will go. Court has directed us to the back door. There
- 20:17was a car outside with the man at the wheel. Hamma and I were
- 20:19piled in and the car drove to a house on the outskirts of Tulouth.
- 20:23It was a big house, big enough to scream in and not be heard
- 20:27outside, which was bad Courts, and this man whose name was Hugo took
- 20:33us into the living room. Joe, they got you. I'm afraid they
- 20:37did. Daisy. You are right so far, so far is correct,
- 20:41mister Khan, Well hello therein is How is your sex appeal making that these
- 20:47days? Huh? I have other weapons when sex appeal fails like this.
- 20:52You know where I'd have picked you for a knife artist. There's something sharp
- 20:56about your manner. I am very good with a knife, mister k good
- 21:00enough to stop your joking forever. H We are all here now, aren't
- 21:07we. Let us get on with it. There are you? Still one
- 21:11more person? Who commness? I'm here, Diane. Hello, Joe.
- 21:15You look surprised, but of course you didn't expect to see me until Joe.
- 21:19So that's it. That's how Court has knew where to find help,
- 21:23Mad luck, Joe, old spare you know no one that you knew?
- 21:27Court has an assistant all about the way they work. But I don't get
- 21:32it. Once behind the door. We will leave that part of it for
- 21:34the moment. There are more urgent things to discuss. The money. Who's
- 21:40got it? You missus Jewicsburg, and don't make the mistake of trying to
- 21:44keep it from us. My dear, you wouldn't want us to get nasty.
- 21:47Where are here, court Is, I can tell you who's got the
- 21:49dough. I have you, mister very well. Where is it? Oh,
- 21:53tut tut. You disappoint me. Your technique is as crude as Mailer's.
- 22:00And that was the way he approached the self. And I am not
- 22:02in the mood for fully. Let me get at him all. I will
- 22:04make him sing like a canary. Seeing that my ex client, Miss Clutterbuck,
- 22:07is batting in your league, it leaves me minus a fee. I'd
- 22:11still like to draw a check for services rendered, say twenty five thousand,
- 22:17Say five twenty five is only twelve and a half percent. When you remember
- 22:22that I'm holding the money, I figure my fee is matteringaness. I think
- 22:25we can get better terms from mister Kahan. Would you like to demonstrate your
- 22:29skill on his girlfriend? It would be a pleasur I have several interesting accomplishments
- 22:36with the knife, mister car call it okay, I'll tell you, Joe,
- 22:41They're not kidding, Daisy. You are a wise man. Mister Kahn.
- 22:45Where is it. It's in a safe deposit box in the bank.
- 22:48I mailed the key to myself at my office. Fin in that case,
- 22:49there is nothing to keep us here into loot any longer. It will take
- 22:53us a day to make the trip back by car, so we will get
- 22:56started at once. It was a long and uncomfortable car ride. Once we
- 23:04reached the old hometown, curt Has dropped his pal Hugo and me outside my
- 23:08office and then went on you go, kept close beside me all the way
- 23:12to the bank, and then took charge of the silver box with the two
- 23:15hundred thousand dollars. Twenty minutes later, we were in the living room of
- 23:18a mansion where Curtiz, Diane, Ines, Helen and Daisy were waiting.
- 23:23Ah, you got it, You go fine, Let's make sure it's all
- 23:26there, eh my ideal, Diane, of course, open the box.
- 23:29You go. Well, it was a roundabout way of finding it, but
- 23:34thanks to you, Joe found it. We have. Yeah. Just tell
- 23:38me one thing to satisfy my curiosity. What is this doan? Where did
- 23:42it come from? I'm quite happy to enlighten you. It came from England.
- 23:47What for a payoff? Our English friends, represented by Missus Clutterback.
- 23:51Thank you, mister Courtons have cooperated with us, and this was our share
- 23:55of the proceeds. What kind of record makes this kind of dough in England?
- 23:59America servicemen, there are quite a lot of them permanently stationed in England.
- 24:03With the help of Miss Clutterbuck's associates, we have established a complete monopoly
- 24:07of the gambling in the camps. I see it figures and Dewisburg must have
- 24:11been one of the servicemen on your pay off. He is clever, isn't
- 24:15he? How come the money was left with him? I can explain that,
- 24:18Joe. You see, one of our problems was getting our American friends
- 24:22percentage out of England and into the States. That was where Carl Dewsburg was
- 24:26invaliable. Also, we thought a serviceman coming home for discharge. The money
- 24:30traveled in his kitbag. He and Missus Jewsburg got back. He took a
- 24:34job with Club and Chemicals, and then everybody waited. When word came through
- 24:38to us that the payoff was to be made, Drewsburg claimed he hadn't heard
- 24:44beggured he could keep a dough for himself. Yes, mister Khann, but
- 24:47he found his mistake. Didn't you try your persuasive tacticsam here means you quietiness
- 24:56to finish the story for you can. We grew tired of waiting. Jewsburg
- 25:00suffered an accident. We intended to pick up Missus Jewsburg, feeling sure she
- 25:06would have the money. As we now know, she didn't, and she
- 25:08realized that nobody would believe her, so she went to Maila. He gave
- 25:12her a job at the Kasbar, and while she was there, she told
- 25:15him this story, and mail as a golden opportunity to grab himself two hundred
- 25:19thousand bucks almost out of the air exactly. He sent Missus Gewsburg to his
- 25:23club into luth while he started looking for the money. And that is where
- 25:27you came into the picture. When our English associates heard about it, they
- 25:32were embarrassed. They sent us someone to help us find the money. Die
- 25:37and with your help, Jerdia, we find it. So that's it,
- 25:41huh. I seem to have done a nice job for everybody, especially for
- 25:45me. Mela. Watch them I hank anybody moves and they get lead poisoning.
- 25:51I Soviet neglect the cash horse corders saved us a lot of trouble.
- 25:55How did you know we had it? I on the Arabian Nights and toe
- 25:57looath. Remember I got worth with Missus Deusburg there and suddenly disappeared. I
- 26:02put two and two together and my answer came to two hundred thousand dollars.
- 26:07You day when the shooting starts, dropped to the floor, follow me.
- 26:11You're all washed up? Cordes finished? Am I? You on that she
- 26:15wolf's sister? Yours? A she wolf has tea for She's gonna might on
- 26:22the floor. Daisy, make for the door, Joe. You think they
- 26:30saw a scroll. I think they were too busy playing targets with each other.
- 26:34Daisy, hit up those stairs. See if you can find a phone
- 26:37and cold hiding at homicide. Tell them to get out here fast. I'll
- 26:40make it fast, Honey. I figure the shooting is nearly over all,
- 26:41right, Joe, but take care of you. Don't worry. This is
- 26:45one time I'm not playing hero. Let them fight it out for themselves.
- 26:59Well, so that's the whole story. Huh, brother, what a massacre?
- 27:02What about Helen Newsburg? Bullet in the arm? She'll be okay.
- 27:04She was lucky with all the gunfire, she could have been killed like the
- 27:07rest of them. Courtiz, his sister, that hood of his Hugo,
- 27:11the Clutterbuck, Dame Mailer, and his pal hank Brother. They'll only be
- 27:15standing room at the morgue this week. Well, I came out of it
- 27:18with a whole hide, for which I'm grateful, but no doe for which
- 27:22I'm not. No. I only got four hundred dollars from dying Clutterbuck,
- 27:26and I spent what was left to that on the plane face to Tulouth.
- 27:27The taxation boys will take care of the two hundred thousand. They'll call it
- 27:32part of cortez undeclared income. But you should get ten percent for laying information.
- 27:37Harding, you've brightened my day. You've brightened min gum shoe. When
- 27:44I tell the Chief that Cortez is handed in his ticket, he'd be so
- 27:47pleased he might even smile. The homicide boys took statements from Daisy and me
- 27:56and then let us go. She had a kind of predatory look in her
- 28:02eyes, so I made a quick excuse and headed home for my apartment.
- 28:07But I wasn't getting off so easy. Hello, you think you're getting away
- 28:15from me? Joe Kann. But you'd better think again now, Daisy,
- 28:21I told you no, you can't dodge me anymore. The case is older.
- 28:25You've got no no one, which means you're doing nothing. Yeah.
- 28:29Yeah, but but I need rest, honey. My nerves a shattered that
- 28:33my brain's tired up. Well, I've got a nice cozy atmosphere already and
- 28:37waiting for you. I'm all primed for rest, relaxation, and romance.
- 28:44I'll expect you at se Oh heck, how can I get out of this
- 28:53lot? She's right eye. You haven't got anything to do with me.
- 29:00I had a new case to start on. It nok okay, coming,
- 29:08yeah, mister Kahn, private detective, that's me. I'm sorry to come
- 29:15to your apartment instead of your office, but it's urgent. I'm in trouble,
- 29:21mister Kahan. I need help right away. I'm prepared to pay your
- 29:25usual fees if you can start work right now. Lady, consider me started.
- 29:32Well, it's like this. I shot my husband exactly thirty five minutes
- 29:37ago. This is catt A Brown. Well, he wanted a new case
- 29:57to start on. I had to give him my but I think he should
- 30:00have stuck to Daisy, don't you Anyway, Let's leave Joe Kahn and concentrate
