- 0:04Speaker 2: FM and the DMV reboot begins in earnest after the
- 0:09Speaker 2: holiday weekend. It's 97.1 wash FM. My name is we
- 0:13Speaker 2: nap over there is Chilean Mar. Thank you for getting
- 0:16Speaker 2: your day started with us and Ashburn today. Why are
- 0:20Speaker 2: you feeling good? coming off this holiday weekend. No, it's
- 0:24Speaker 2: not a loaded question. There's always a reason to feel
- 0:26Speaker 2: good at 6, 6, 9, 2, 7, 43, 61.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:30Speaker 3: We planned to go to the community pool before it
- 0:34Speaker 3: closed and we followed through with said plans. So we
- 0:38Speaker 3: never quite got our money's worth this season. We never
- 0:41Speaker 3: seem to really, because we only go on weekends. But yeah,
- 0:46Speaker 3: it was lovely. It was lovely.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I am feeling good because I said, No, I really
- 0:54Speaker 2: don't know if I want to go to Secrets in
- 0:57Speaker 2: Ocean City.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You were invited to go to Secrets?
- 1:00Speaker 2: With some of our colleagues.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Oh, my.
- 1:02Speaker 2: They were out there doing their little Labor Day thing.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, that might be fun.
- 1:10Speaker 5: No.
- 1:11Speaker 4: No.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I have no desire. I was feeling a little something
- 1:15Speaker 2: coming on.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I was going to say you were, you were, you're
- 1:18Speaker 3: still fighting a little something, something you're getting over it,
- 1:20Speaker 3: but yeah, you were wise not to go. Cause I
- 1:24Speaker 3: bet you would have gotten worse.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I'd be really, really bad. You know, when you get
- 1:28Speaker 2: around that many people, you know, I mean, even though
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's outdoors.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 2: There are certain things that are still things all these
- 1:35Speaker 2: years after that whole global thing we don't speak of anymore, but,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'm glad that I chose to stay home, bed rot,
- 1:43Speaker 2: do some stuff around the house and experience the DMV
- 1:47Speaker 2: within five to ten miles of where I live. You
- 1:49Speaker 2: know what? I labor enough.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
- 1:52Speaker 2: That's right. Why are you feeling good this morning? Go ahead.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You're shaking it off just like the rest of us.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Hit us up and let us know. In the meantime,
- 1:59Speaker 2: here comes the news. Your first look at the morning
- 2:02Speaker 2: as we start what is at least a short new week. Chili,
- 2:04Speaker 2: what's going on?
- 2:05Speaker 3: Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
- 2:09Speaker 3: are now in effect. I've got some more details on
- 2:12Speaker 3: that coming up in just a few.
- 2:16Speaker 6: Top stories, top of the hour.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
- 2:22Speaker 3: are now in effect, escalating the trade fight with the U.S.
- 2:26Speaker 3: The tariffs kicked in just after midnight and range anywhere
- 2:29Speaker 3: from 15 to 50 percent, targeting everything from steel and
- 2:32Speaker 3: dairy to appliances and electronics. A 16,000-pound steel beam from
- 2:39Speaker 3: the World Trade Center is going to be going on
- 2:41Speaker 3: display at the White House today as the nation prepares
- 2:44Speaker 3: to mark 25 years since 9-11. The Tunnel to Towers
- 2:48Speaker 3: Steel Across America tour is bringing the beam to the Ellipse,
- 2:52Speaker 3: where the president will welcome first responders. Montgomery County Councilmember
- 2:57Speaker 3: and Democratic County Executive nominee Will Jawando suffered a heart attack.
- 3:03Speaker 3: This happened on Saturday while he was playing basketball. The
- 3:06Speaker 3: 43-year-old was hospitalized and doctors placed a stent and his
- 3:10Speaker 3: office says he is expected to recover. Metro is getting
- 3:14Speaker 3: ready to resume full red line service after summer construction
- 3:20Speaker 3: between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights wrapped up over the weekend.
- 3:24Speaker 3: So you can start using that red line today. Officials
- 3:26Speaker 3: say that the critical infrastructure improvements will benefit riders for decades.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Thousands of people lined the streets of Kensington for the
- 3:34Speaker 3: town's 59th annual Labor Day parade yesterday. The longtime tradition
- 3:38Speaker 3: featured marching bands, floats, community groups, and plenty of spectators
- 3:42Speaker 3: who were celebrating the holiday together. And Walmart is teaming
- 3:46Speaker 3: up with Dunkin' to bring coffee, breakfast, and other menu
- 3:49Speaker 3: items right to Walmart's app and website. The service starts
- 3:53Speaker 3: with 150 locations inside Walmart stores, and then it's going
- 3:56Speaker 3: to be expanding nationwide. Forecast today, sunny skies, highs around 86.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Right now, 62 in Greenbelt.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Tuesday morning, now that you got the news with Toby
- 4:07Speaker 2: and Tilly's top stories here at 97.1 Wash FM Hangout,
- 4:11Speaker 2: because we're going to take a second to talk about
- 4:13Speaker 2: you and how you're coping on this Tuesday morning as
- 4:18Speaker 2: we reboot after the long holiday weekend. Your morning mindsets,
- 4:23Speaker 2: it'll help. Washington's variety from the 80s, 90s and today
- 4:27Speaker 2: all morning at 97.1 Wash FM with Toby and Chili
- 4:31Speaker 2: in the morning. And now it's time for us to
- 4:33Speaker 2: take a moment to reflect on what you're going through
- 4:38Speaker 2: right now with a quote that we hope might help you.
- 4:40Speaker 3: It's our morning mindset on this Tuesday. It feels like
- 4:44Speaker 3: a Monday. Perhaps you need it more than ever. So
- 4:46Speaker 3: what you got?
- 4:47Speaker 2: Amen to that. We all need it. Malala Yousafzai says,
- 4:51Speaker 2: we realize the importance of our voices only when we
- 4:55Speaker 2: are silenced. We realize the importance of our voices only
- 5:00Speaker 2: when we are silenced. Now, it's not a political message
- 5:04Speaker 2: or phrase. It's a life phrase. It's a life phrase
- 5:09Speaker 2: that reminds us through this young woman to say the
- 5:12Speaker 2: thing that matters in life. You know, your voice deserves more,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I think, than permanent residence inside your head. So speak
- 5:21Speaker 2: your truth, whatever that might be. Say that thing that matters.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You'll be happy that you did. Say, and we realize
- 5:31Speaker 2: the importance of our voices only when we are silenced. Malala,
- 5:34Speaker 2: thank you. And if you were moved and you need
- 5:38Speaker 2: to share that with someone who might want it, find
- 5:40Speaker 2: it on our socials. Or hit us up at the
- 5:44Speaker 2: Toby and Chili page at watchfm.com. We'd be happy to
- 5:46Speaker 2: send it your way. On this Tuesday morning, hang out
- 5:49Speaker 2: for just a bit because we talking.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Do you think you have your life together? Currently, there
- 5:55Speaker 3: are some signs that will prove that you indeed do
- 5:58Speaker 3: or do not.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah, wait till you hear this.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You have your life together?
- 6:02Speaker 4: Hmm, really?
- 6:04Speaker 2: Maybe not. 97.1 Watch FM. We're Toby and Chili in
- 6:07Speaker 2: the morning. I honestly ask myself that question every morning
- 6:10Speaker 2: when I look myself in the mirror.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You know what really bums me out is the research
- 6:16Speaker 3: suggests the bar may be lower than we think. And
- 6:18Speaker 3: then I looked at the list of things. I'm a
- 6:22Speaker 3: little worried about you and I.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Why is that? That we're not together?
- 6:25Speaker 3: We may not be. So it starts out fine. Being
- 6:28Speaker 3: financially responsible. I think we both are. Well, you more
- 6:32Speaker 3: so than me, I will tell you. There are a
- 6:35Speaker 3: lot of decisions I would reconsider.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Okay. But for the most part, I'm like that little
- 6:41Speaker 2: fish in Finding Nemo. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.
- 6:44Speaker 3: We both, I think, enjoy our own company because that's
- 6:47Speaker 3: another sign.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I am okay with being alone if I need
- 6:49Speaker 2: to be.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Admitting when you're wrong.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Got to.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I definitely have no problem doing that. Okay.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Saying no without feeling guilty. It took me a long time.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I'm still working on it.
- 6:59Speaker 2: What about you?
- 7:00Speaker 3: I'm getting better, but I can't say that I'm there yet.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Not paying for subscriptions you don't use anymore.
- 7:06Speaker 2: No comment.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Again, my husband, thank God, keeps us more on track
- 7:11Speaker 3: than I do.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Well, I need one of those people in my life.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Wait a minute, I have one. I just don't choose
- 7:16Speaker 2: to listen.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Being aware of when your trash day is. Fortunately, that's
- 7:21Speaker 5: every day for me. What about you?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I do know when our trash and recycling day are.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Those are two separate days in my little neighborhood, and
- 7:28Speaker 3: I do know. But here's where I fail big time,
- 7:32Speaker 3: and I have an excuse. Making your bed every day. See,
- 7:35Speaker 3: I can't make my bed every day because my husband
- 7:37Speaker 3: leaves after me. So he's in charge of making the bed.
- 7:40Speaker 3: What about you?
- 7:41Speaker 2: I have no comment. I plead the fifth.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Well, maybe I do have my life together more than
- 7:48Speaker 3: you do, but still not completely.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Come on now. You don't make your bed every day.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Your husband does.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I would if I if I was. Oh, that's my point. Oh,
- 7:56Speaker 3: I don't like it when it's wide open.
- 7:58Speaker 2: No, I don't like my bed's a disaster area right now.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I'm just telling you, it looks like it looks like
- 8:03Speaker 2: the freaking Appalachian Mountains with all the sheets just all
- 8:07Speaker 2: thrown all over the place. That's funny. What do you
- 8:09Speaker 2: think about your life? Do you have your life together
- 8:12Speaker 2: in 2026? Yes or no? Or is it a work
- 8:15Speaker 2: in progress? If you want to speak out, there's that
- 8:18Speaker 2: talkback microphone on your iHeart app. You can tap speak
- 8:21Speaker 2: and send if you want to. Always fun to hear
- 8:22Speaker 2: what you think about the things we talk about. Now,
- 8:25Speaker 2: stay with us because top stories at the top of
- 8:29Speaker 2: the hour on the way. What you working on, Chili?
- 8:30Speaker 3: The secret to getting your doctor to respond to your
- 8:33Speaker 3: patient portal message may all come down to the way
- 8:36Speaker 3: you write it. There's actually one specific word that will
- 8:40Speaker 3: help you, and I'll share what that is coming up
- 8:42Speaker 3: in just a few.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It's not too early to start planning for the weekend.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I know the week's just getting started. 97.1 Wash FM.
- 8:49Speaker 2: But if you're looking for something to do with the
- 8:51Speaker 2: family this coming weekend.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Well, also September 1st, this all started. The corn maze
- 8:55Speaker 3: and apple harvest at Great Country Farms in Bluemont. There's
- 8:59Speaker 3: apple picking, of course, a huge 12 acre play area.
- 9:03Speaker 3: So much to do. the best part about.

- 9:23Speaker 3: latest on that story and others on the way with

- 9:33Speaker 6: Top stories, top of the hour.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Canada has imposed new tariffs of up to 50% on
- 9:39Speaker 3: billions of dollars in American goods. They took effect overnight,
- 9:42Speaker 3: targeting steel, farm equipment, electronics, and paper products. Canada says
- 9:47Speaker 3: it's in retaliation for the president's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
- 9:52Speaker 3: One person has died after a shooting at the Addison
- 9:55Speaker 3: Road metro station in Prince George's County yesterday. Police say
- 9:58Speaker 3: two men exchanged gunfire after an argument outside the station
- 10:02Speaker 3: one man died at a hospital and investigators are still
- 10:05Speaker 3: searching for the other shooter two drivers are facing reckless
- 10:10Speaker 3: driving charges after a fiery crash on 66 in fairfax
- 10:13Speaker 3: county killed three people sunday Police say a Honda Pilot
- 10:17Speaker 3: slammed into a truck that was carrying oxygen tanks and
- 10:20Speaker 3: then burst into flames. The drivers of the truck and
- 10:23Speaker 3: a Toyota 4Runner were charged. Police are searching for a
- 10:27Speaker 3: driver after a hit-and-run in Woodbridge last week. A man
- 10:30Speaker 3: and a pregnant woman were hit by a dark-colored pickup
- 10:33Speaker 3: while they were crossing or rather walking through a parking lot.
- 10:38Speaker 3: The woman's baby died shortly after an emergency delivery. A
- 10:43Speaker 3: twin-engine plane made an emergency landing at Montgomery County Air
- 10:46Speaker 3: Park in Gaithersburg yesterday after it developed problems with its
- 10:50Speaker 3: nose gear. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. And you want
- 10:54Speaker 3: your doctor to answer your patient portal message? Well, researchers
- 10:57Speaker 3: found that if you greet the doctor by their last name,
- 11:00Speaker 3: you get more replies. Messages with multiple question marks and
- 11:04Speaker 3: 100 to 200 words also had higher response rates. Forecast
- 11:09Speaker 3: for today, we'll have sunny skies, highs around 86. Right now,
- 11:13Speaker 3: 63 in McLean.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Feels good to be up to speed, doesn't it? It's
- 11:19Speaker 2: 97.1 Wash FM. Toby and Chili in the morning. In
- 11:22Speaker 2: just a bit, we're going to talk about something new.
- 11:24Speaker 2: It's called speed room mating. Have you heard of this?
- 11:28Speaker 2: Think speed dating only minus the date. You'll understand in
- 11:33Speaker 2: just a few. And this might even make you raise
- 11:35Speaker 2: one or two eyebrows. You've heard of speed dating. Let's
- 11:39Speaker 2: talk about speed room mating this morning. 97.1 Wash FM.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We are Toby and Chili in the morning. And this
- 11:47Speaker 2: comes from the New York Post, Chili. I guess people
- 11:51Speaker 2: in their 40s and 50s and 60s are attending monthly
- 11:56Speaker 2: speed room mating events. Kind of like speed dating, only
- 11:59Speaker 2: no dating.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 2: People wear name tags. They list their budget on the
- 12:03Speaker 2: name tags, the neighborhood they live in, and whether they
- 12:07Speaker 2: want a roommate or a tenant.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Well, because these older groups are growing faster than the
- 12:12Speaker 3: younger groups because more older people just can't afford to
- 12:15Speaker 3: live alone. loan or buy a place, which makes me
- 12:18Speaker 3: sad that you get into your 40s, 50s and 60s
- 12:22Speaker 3: and you're shopping around for tenants or roommates at these events.
- 12:26Speaker 3: And look, even if I was in that position where
- 12:29Speaker 3: I needed a roommate, I don't really feel comfortable doing
- 12:32Speaker 3: it this way, like a speed roommateing where you just
- 12:34Speaker 3: spending a few minutes with each person, kind of getting
- 12:37Speaker 3: doing a vibe check, asking a few questions for compatibility,
- 12:40Speaker 3: because living with somebody is very different than going on
- 12:43Speaker 3: a date.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no kidding.
- 12:44Speaker 3: That's like next level commitment to a human.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But I will say that there is, I think, a
- 12:50Speaker 2: bit of something to the idea of speed room mating
- 12:53Speaker 2: minus the speed. You know what I mean? Like if
- 12:55Speaker 2: you have a really close friend or, you know, you're
- 12:58Speaker 2: you're you're. Yes.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I want to know the person personally.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Not going to these stranger events to hopefully meet somebody.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know how I feel about that and
- 13:08Speaker 2: having that person around all my stuff and whatnot. No,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I don't know. But I do know that I would
- 13:13Speaker 2: probably if I had, you know, like three or four friends.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We all pitch in on someplace really big and nice
- 13:19Speaker 2: and Potomac. And, you know, hey, many hands make light
- 13:23Speaker 2: work when it comes to the rent. But I would
- 13:25Speaker 2: have to know them well.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 13:28Speaker 2: So thoughts on this speed room mating? Would it be
- 13:31Speaker 2: a thing you'd consider? What are you doing right now?
- 13:34Speaker 2: You're grabbing the phone and you're calling us at 866-927-4361.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Or you can actually call us with any roommate horror stories,
- 13:41Speaker 3: which is what prevents you from doing such a thing
- 13:44Speaker 3: because you never want to get yourself into that situation again.
- 13:47Speaker 2: We're talking. So you call now and join the conversation.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Circling back on our chat about speed room mating. It's
- 13:55Speaker 2: replacing speed dating 97.1. Watch FM Toby and Chili in
- 13:58Speaker 2: the morning. The idea is that people of a certain
- 14:02Speaker 2: age over 40, between like 40, 50, 60. They're going
- 14:06Speaker 2: to these events to find potential roommates or perhaps maybe
- 14:10Speaker 2: tenants to cohabitate with in order to bring the price
- 14:14Speaker 2: of living, the cost of living down. Because guess what?
- 14:17Speaker 2: Everything is more expensive these days.
- 14:19Speaker 3: But I think a lot of people are kind of
- 14:21Speaker 3: nervous about doing that because if you've ever had a
- 14:24Speaker 3: roommate horror story... You're a bit apprehensive about sharing your
- 14:29Speaker 3: living space with somebody.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And Miranda in Glover Park, D.C. has had this experience.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Oh, I had a horrible roommate.
- 14:39Speaker 6: She was dirty.
- 14:41Speaker 4: And I swear there was a different guy every day.
- 14:43Speaker 4: I didn't know who I was going to wake up.
- 14:45Speaker 6: To in my dorm room.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Oh, the college roommate experience. Yeah.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So, I mean, it's a little bit different, I hope,
- 14:52Speaker 3: when you get to be over 40 that you don't
- 14:54Speaker 3: have a rotating person coming into your roommate's life.
- 14:59Speaker 2: It's like six, seven, six, seven. It's like, okay. There's 18, 19, 20,
- 15:02Speaker 2: and then there's 40, 50, 60. I mean, come on.
- 15:07Speaker 2: But thanks for jumping in, Miranda. Have a great morning today.
- 15:11Speaker 2: And over in Reston near Lake Anne, Katie, you've got
- 15:15Speaker 2: a roommate tale to tell. Oh, yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I've actually had quite a few roommates just because of them.
- 15:22Speaker 6: Not working out very well.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Really?
- 15:24Speaker 3: What happened?
- 15:25Speaker 6: My first roommate, whenever I would leave, she would wear
- 15:28Speaker 6: my clothes and then post pictures of herself on Facebook
- 15:31Speaker 6: wearing my clothes.
- 15:32Speaker 4: And then would never admit to doing so, even though
- 15:36Speaker 4: I had that evidence.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Yeah, if you want to wear something of mine, you've
- 15:40Speaker 3: got to ask me first. Don't you dare help yourself
- 15:43Speaker 3: to my closet.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Yeah, no bueno. Got to respect some space. Thank you, Katie,
- 15:49Speaker 2: for the call this morning. Have a great day and
- 15:52Speaker 2: enjoy your Tuesday if you can. We're Toby and Chili
- 15:55Speaker 2: in the morning. If you've got thoughts and you feel
- 15:57Speaker 2: like you want to jump into the conversation, but maybe
- 15:59Speaker 2: you don't have time right now. When you get a second,
- 16:01Speaker 2: tap the talkback microphone. If you're signed in listening on
- 16:04Speaker 2: your iHeart app, you'll see it right there. And tell
- 16:07Speaker 2: us your thoughts and stay right there because we got
- 16:09Speaker 2: some news coming up for you. Top stories at the
- 16:11Speaker 2: top of the hour, right around 710. What's going on
- 16:14Speaker 2: this morning?
- 16:16Speaker 3: A 16,000 pound steel beam from the World Trade Center
- 16:19Speaker 3: is going to be going on display at the White
- 16:21Speaker 3: House today. I've got the latest on that story coming
- 16:24Speaker 3: up in just a few minutes.
- 16:25Speaker 1: 97.1 WASH-FM, Washington.
- 16:29Speaker 6: An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories, top of
- 16:33Speaker 6: the hour.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
- 16:38Speaker 3: are now in effect. I've got the latest on that

- 22:35Speaker 3: It was when I took a quick little weekend trip
- 22:37Speaker 3: to visit my cousin in Brooklyn. Just me visiting him
- 22:41Speaker 3: and staying at his really cute apartment. And it was

- 23:15Speaker 2: of the summer. However... One of the only times and
- 23:20Speaker 2: one of the first times that I actually got out
- 23:22Speaker 2: was over the summer when one of our work colleagues
- 23:25Speaker 2: and I went to see a musical Beetlejuice at the

- 23:58Speaker 6: her first baby.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Wow, that's a lot of milestones in your circle. Very
- 24:01Speaker 3: exciting in our friend group. Leslie, it is very exciting,
- 24:04Speaker 3: as long as those friends of yours don't start pressuring
- 24:07Speaker 3: you to get married or have babies.
- 24:09Speaker 2: That's when you need to tell them to go pound sand.
