Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Potential weather concerns for Iowa/Penn State, Lee Sterling's Weekly Picks & Chris Shipley on a sock drive
Transcript
- 0:10Right. Good afternoon.
- 0:11Welcome to Miller and Condon on a Thursdays.
- 0:14The Iowa Sports Radio Network Sun just popped out in downtown
- 0:18Des Moines. Good to see.
- 0:19Get a warm up. I'm all for it.
- 0:23Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:24Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we're with you until 2:00.
- 0:27We will start at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:29Paramount Sports. Lee Sterling is here.
- 0:31He's got a handful of games I did not check.
- 0:33Did he have a good week? Last two.
- 0:34And three last. Two and three, Class 2 and 3,
- 0:36and that was on the Hills end of nine and one.
- 0:39So still did a pretty good run, but last week took it down a
- 0:42little bit. But Lee will be back at 12:30.
- 0:45We'll talk about a handful of games and he'll tell us how we
- 0:49can get involved if you're so inclined.
- 0:51Looking for somebody along that line, handicapper to help you
- 0:53out. Lee Sterling,
- 0:54paramountsports.com at 1:00. We're going to take a look at a
- 0:58couple of our regional teams in the NFL.
- 1:01Dane Mouzutani on the Vikings and what they're going to do
- 1:04with the quarterback spot. Sounds like it's going to be
- 1:06Wentz if Wentz is able to go. But we'll hear what the Dane
- 1:10Mouzutani who started in all the press conferences this week
- 1:13since the team's been out of their buy.
- 1:16Dane Mouzutani kicks off power #2 then Nick Athan on the
- 1:19Chiefs. They will get the Raiders and
- 1:21probably get the Raiders again without that gift of tight end.
- 1:24Bowers is going to miss another game by all accounts.
- 1:27We will see. Did not practice yesterday, but
- 1:31we'll talk about the Chiefs with Nick and then Stephen M Simple
- 1:34on Nebraska. They play tomorrow night up in
- 1:36the Twin Cities. I watched a lot of that
- 1:38Minnesota Purdue game last week. I thought Purdue was the best
- 1:42team on the field. No, really.
- 1:43In that game, In that game, in that, yeah.
- 1:46But we'll see. We'll talk sip about that.
- 1:48Obviously that kind of secondary to the potential that Matt Rule
- 1:53may be pulling up stakes and headed to Penn State.
- 1:56We'll talk to sip about that, Trent.
- 1:58We'll make some plays to baseball games, a football game,
- 2:01a lot going on in the world of sports tonight and I can't
- 2:05believe how many people I read here love the Bengals tonight.
- 2:11What am I missing the? Steam is coming.
- 2:13It really is, isn't it? I think it's simply Pittsburgh's
- 2:15not good. I don't disagree with that, but
- 2:17neither Cincinnati. That is very true divisional
- 2:20game. Yeah.
- 2:22And short week, absolutely short week, divisional game.
- 2:25There's a lot to point to and you can see why the steam is
- 2:27coming on this one, I don't think.
- 2:30But Cincinnati played well defensively, I thought last week
- 2:33against Green Bay, I mean, they were making plays.
- 2:35They played Green Bay tougher than I thought that they would.
- 2:38And I know you were one of the many that were on Green Bay
- 2:40Survivor, and there's a little bit of a sweat.
- 2:42Oh. Absolutely.
- 2:42A little. Bit of a sweat, couldn't pull
- 2:44away from a a bad football team. At least we thought it was a bad
- 2:47football team. I don't know if a Flacco's the
- 2:50answer there or not. It means obviously a Band-Aid,
- 2:53but we'll see tonight. What are you going to watch
- 2:55tonight? Kind of variety bounce back and
- 2:59forth. American League, now the
- 3:01National League goes first today.
- 3:02The Brewers and the Dodgers are first.
- 3:04I believe that was what the schedule said when I looked at
- 3:07it. It is.
- 3:08That's a five O 8 first pitch. And then the Jays and the
- 3:11Mariners get going 2 1/2 hours later on FS1.
- 3:15But seven O clock, or just shortly after that, we'll get to
- 3:18Primal cranked up in the way we go with the AFC North.
- 3:21I was a little bit surprised that we are likely going to have
- 3:24an overlap in the baseball games, even starting that thing
- 3:28at 8:00. O'clock.
- 3:30Yeah, I mean, it'd have to cruise pretty quickly and not a
- 3:32bunch of pitching changes maybe turn into a blowout for it to
- 3:36maybe go quickly. But yeah, I was surprised by
- 3:38that. Certainly with Seattle on top of
- 3:40it being the West Coast team, it's a little bit easier, little
- 3:43bit more palpable to to pull that off because they're still
- 3:46talking about a 530 local first pitch for that one.
- 3:49I I was surprised by that. Have you seen who Murphy's going
- 3:52to start from Milwaukee? I don't know who's starting the
- 3:54the Brewers starting pitcher is. It still has not been announced.
- 3:57Still. What are they doing?
- 3:58And well, you don't have to. Don't do it right.
- 4:02I'll wait as long as possible. Keep them guessing and they can
- 4:05start going through. They'll be getting the ballpark
- 4:07here in a little bit and tell you have to why not?
- 4:11I mean, is it advantageous for you to announce to the media and
- 4:14the fans who's going to go? No, but I think the sports book
- 4:18operators would like to know. Yes, they.
- 4:21Was that angle? There, I don't think that Murphy
- 4:24care is A1 Iona. I don't know about that, no.
- 4:27Nor should he. Let me make that perfect.
- 4:29Yes, clear. He shouldn't.
- 4:30So we know it won't be Peralta Priesner.
- 4:33How many innings did he pitch the other day?
- 4:37Let's see Priester going back a couple of games.
- 4:40He pitched 4. I've got it here.
- 4:42Pitched 4 innings, gave up three hits.
- 4:44No runs in the in the game on Monday.
- 4:49I don't know, We'll see where it goes.
- 4:51Ashby seemingly he's been that guy a lot of maybe it's
- 4:53Mizuroski is he pitched in this series.
- 4:56I think that's where you go, right?
- 4:57You go with an opener. He has not pitched in this
- 5:00series. Ashby, whoever you use as your
- 5:03opener here and then you go from there and then you go Mesoski
- 5:05and figure it out after that. I think that would certainly be
- 5:08the one that would make the most.
- 5:09I think we figured it out. Call circa.
- 5:12I think they'll be fine, yeah. I think they'll be fine, but
- 5:15that that would seemingly be the case.
- 5:17We'll see where it goes, but you give the Brewers a chance.
- 5:20Yeah, it's baseball. Give him a shot last night.
- 5:22Yeah, absolutely. I mean that that was a nice
- 5:25comeback and I told you I was hoping for something better.
- 5:27I should have just jumped on. I liked the Blue Jays last
- 5:30night. Didn't get the price that I
- 5:31wanted and didn't get there. But yeah, I think that anything
- 5:36it's baseball. I I the the definitive was
- 5:39certainly one game thing and even small series sample size
- 5:42that continue to be out there. I think we know better.
- 5:44I think the Dodgers are a lot better team and they top to
- 5:47bottom, they have an advantage and maybe everything outside of
- 5:49the dugout. But that aside, they're just so
- 5:52Dang talented. That line up, they mash up and
- 5:56down the lineup and they it's not just that they're great
- 5:59hitters, it's great at bats. Now how many times do we come in
- 6:02here? Except one guy.
- 6:03You know Tonye been awful. Yes, he's been awful in the
- 6:06postseason. But still, I'll take the
- 6:08institutional show. Hey, Otani.
- 6:11Yeah, is they have greater bats, you know, and and we watch the
- 6:14Cubs throughout the course of the year and they're just the
- 6:16non competitive events that they take.
- 6:18You don't get that from the Dodgers.
- 6:19No, even not their top flight guys.
- 6:22They're gonna battle Kiki. Hernandez When the calendar
- 6:24turns to October, this guy's a. Freak.
- 6:27He's unbelievable. You have to have him on your
- 6:29roster. Maybe not for the Buck 62 that
- 6:32preceded, but man, the playoffs roll around.
- 6:34This guy, you can't get him out. They've just got they've got one
- 6:37after another. I agree with you, Max Muncie,
- 6:39he's one of those guys Will Smith behind the plate, the
- 6:42Oscar Hernandez can't feel to save his life, but you want him
- 6:45in the lineup. They don't want to run the bases
- 6:47necessarily, but when you hit it over the wall, you can take your
- 6:49time. But we'll see.
- 6:52I I hope that we extended. I hope we get more baseball
- 6:55because as we said, the World Series.
- 6:57I mean, regardless, when these two series end, it will not
- 7:00start any earlier than the 24th of October, which is a week from
- 7:03tomorrow. Tomorrow, by the way, Trent and
- 7:06I and Lucas and Sean will all be out at the Urban.
- 7:09It is time of year again for that Spooktacular liquor sale.
- 7:14I was blown away by it last year, Trent, just how many
- 7:19hundreds? I mean, we're obviously on the
- 7:22air during the lunch hour and it was just one car after another
- 7:26and guys and gals getting out and going in and getting there.
- 7:30And they had every cash register that open and churning out the
- 7:35people going through them as fast as they can.
- 7:36But we'll be there tomorrow. Look forward to doing that.
- 7:38I know 40 of you are going to win a gift certificate from the
- 7:41High V and you have to be there to to claim it in person.
- 7:45So we hope to meet a whole bunch of you folks and hopefully a
- 7:47bunch of you will get lucky and maybe win the big denomination
- 7:50that comes in that envelope at Trenton Eye.
- 7:52And then Lucas and Sean at the Urbandale High V tomorrow.
- 7:55We're going to be indoors this year, which is great because
- 7:57remember last year it was windy. It was windy.
- 8:00I'll say it was windy. Anyways, Speaking of weather.
- 8:03Yes. Have you seen the weather
- 8:05forecast for Iowa City on Saturday evening?
- 8:08No, I haven't. What's what?
- 8:09What's it have in store? Store is a storm, thunderstorm.
- 8:15So it was enlightening. Maybe delay thunderstorm?
- 8:19Yeah. Well.
- 8:21It's going to turn a long day into a longer day.
- 8:23This is going to be my game of getting over there without the
- 8:26family. Is it really?
- 8:27No wife, no kids? It's the boys week.
- 8:29Staying over. No, no, we'll, we'll have EP.
- 8:32You've got your guy already picked up who drew the short
- 8:34straw. Mr. Ketty, Dr. Ketty will be the
- 8:37one that drew the short straw on that one.
- 8:39So good luck to you, McCabe. It's going to be a fun one.
- 8:43Looking forward to it. And what do we say?
- 8:45You're putting the fun meter in the red zone and away you go.
- 8:47Absolutely. Well, if it is delayed, and I
- 8:49hope it's not, I hope it's. Yeah, it it sucks it.
- 8:52Really it? Really, I was there for the Iowa
- 8:54State game. I would, yes, I would.
- 8:57Tennessee Tech was one that had weather.
- 8:59I wasn't there for the Nevada game that went to 1:00 AM.
- 9:01But it's just, it's not fun. It just.
- 9:04So help me out and cycle and fans will remember this, but the
- 9:06but the the the I think it was Colorado.
- 9:10Yeah, the the. Siren game?
- 9:12The Siren game? Was there a delay?
- 9:15I mean, I don't think. I'm almost.
- 9:18I don't know there are menu there today there would be.
- 9:21Yes, but I. Don't remember being that, and
- 9:24it was on one of those funky networks.
- 9:26If memory serves it was, I think the guy's last name was.
- 9:30I don't remember, he was TNT. Was it TNT that had the game at
- 9:34the time? 2005 November of 2000.
- 9:38Was it November? November of 2005 The Tornado
- 9:41game. And was there a delay?
- 9:45Look in here so Channel 5 has something up before Colorado
- 9:49left #22 Colorado came to town, Chase to Clint.
- 9:54The game didn't start on time because of severe.
- 9:56OK, so but it but it played its way through right without having
- 9:59to stop in the middle of it. I don't recall who and who
- 10:03broadcast it. Does it say?
- 10:05Doesn't say no. Was it like one of those bicycle
- 10:07channel? What was the bicycle channel?
- 10:09Oh, oh, wait, no. OLNOLN.
- 10:12Yes. Outdoor Outdoor Life Network.
- 10:14Yeah. Didn't they?
- 10:15Didn't they have it back in the day?
- 10:17They did. That was a small package.
- 10:20Yeah, we got TNT Sports now, but TBS had it.
- 10:22Yeah, I saw it was the anniversary of the run was
- 10:24Seneca Wallace couple days ago and that was on TBS.
- 10:29So yeah, it's been a wide iteration, but half hour delay.
- 10:32Game started 30 minutes late on that one as a fan, but this was
- 10:37that was a tornado. That's different than a
- 10:40thunderstorm. I mean, I wonder if they even
- 10:42cleared the stadium. And then, and I'm not picking,
- 10:44poking fun at or being critical of Iowa State was just different
- 10:48back in the day, you know, years ago.
- 10:50Now there's now there's, you know, a handbook that you go to
- 10:53when you can start a game and when you have to stop a game and
- 10:55how close the lightning has to be before it starts before you
- 10:59have to stop the game. So we'll see we as we go back in
- 11:03the in the way back machine here.
- 11:05All right, coming up, we're going to talk to Lee Sterling
- 11:08paramountsports.com get into the baseball.
- 11:11I do want to a recap, a further recap of your day yesterday,
- 11:16Trent, over in Iowa City with Iowa men's basketball media day.
- 11:21Looking forward to tomorrow night when it comes to Iowa
- 11:24State playing in Creighton. I will not spend the money on
- 11:27the. Package you're not going to
- 11:28spend. The 10 bucks for the Nebraska
- 11:30Public TV. I I won't do it.
- 11:33I I don't think well, at least at this point I'm lean.
- 11:36There's so much on. I want to watch Nebraska and
- 11:38Minnesota right. I mean is, is do the Hawks get
- 11:41Minnesota next? Is that on schedule go?
- 11:43That's what I thought. So I I want to see that.
- 11:46Obviously we know when they get Nebraska.
- 11:47So I want to see that for that reason.
- 11:49But it'll be baseball tomorrow night.
- 11:50Both series are going going on tomorrow night.
- 11:53And Miami, be careful. Be really careful.
- 11:58What's going on? There they got Louisville coming
- 12:00to town. So you like Louisville?
- 12:02Oh, I like that. On tomorrow night too.
- 12:04That's six o'clock 7:00 Nebraska and Minnesota.
- 12:07And then how about late night? Yeah, I like that game.
- 12:10Belichick out and taken on soccer Pulitelli.
- 12:13That's right, one of our favorite guys to watch and so we
- 12:16got a good viewing. Really good college football
- 12:19night, that is. Louisville.
- 12:20You know what? Anyone ever saw that Louisville?
- 12:21Miami's tomorrow night. 6:00. A lot of folks like Louisville
- 12:25in this game is the #13 1/2 fourteen.
- 12:28Yes, yeah, it's right around the two touchdown number.
- 12:30I had a caller just mentioned the Tornado game.
- 12:32Yeah, Said they put a number of people in Hilton, did they?
- 12:35Yes, So. That makes sense.
- 12:37Also in this article from Channel 5, it did mention though
- 12:40that there are plenty of people still milling around in the
- 12:42tailgate work. Absolutely.
- 12:45Hell, you don't want to give up your tailgate.
- 12:47No, you're heavily lubricated. No, we'll be fine.
- 12:49You only. Get 6 or seven of them a year
- 12:51and you take absolute full advantage of that.
- 12:54Good for, good for cyclone. Fantasy this weekend.
- 12:57What was the guy's name that called the game?
- 13:00Yeah, I, I'll, I'll never get that.
- 13:01I know you won't. Louisville, Miami.
- 13:03He. Was the voice of the San Antonio
- 13:05Spurs, anyways. Other games this week?
- 13:09Well, go. To go up against Iowa, I mean,
- 13:12that's where it is for. That's where it starts and stops
- 13:14from the USC, Notre Dame. I would love to watch that game.
- 13:17That's why I was on Peacock. Right.
- 13:20Because it lost out to that one. And I think that was scheduled.
- 13:24That was like a summertime, NBC said.
- 13:26This is going to be our Notre Dame night.
- 13:28It should be. I, I mean, it's a great rivalry
- 13:30and it's going away. Unfortunately.
- 13:32Tennessee, Alabama's on at that time on ABC.
- 13:35I mean, this is a big prime time night of college football on.
- 13:38Saturday, the Holy War. There you.
- 13:40Is that What time's that? 07:00 Big fox?
- 13:43I have a strong opinion in this game and I'm alone on an island.
- 13:47Utah, yes. Yeah.
- 13:49You like the utes? I love the utes Yeah.
- 13:50I'm. I'm on your side if I had to
- 13:52make a pick right now. If I could find a third game,
- 13:55'cause we got to, we do 2 picks, 2 pro, 2 college football and
- 13:58the best bet. That's my best bet, but I can't
- 14:00find another college game. You can't find another college
- 14:02game? Michigan State, Indiana doesn't
- 14:04do it for you. Well, I think Indiana clobber
- 14:06them, but yeah, is Indiana gonna lose a game until they get to
- 14:10the Big 10 Championship? They are going to be favored
- 14:12depending on what we see from Penn State this week.
- 14:14But as the I heard one of the Visen hosts say this week, his
- 14:18power numbers have them. I think it was Wes Reynolds
- 14:21who's an Indiana. Grad and keep that in mind.
- 14:23He is. Yeah, but he his power numbers,
- 14:25he's not going to sway them because he's a Hoosier Grant.
- 14:27That's just what his numbers come up with.
- 14:28They are a 19 1/2 point favorite or more in every game except for
- 14:32the Penn State game and even that one on the road.
- 14:34Currently he has them favored by 7 and a.
- 14:36Half Can they win a national championship?
- 14:38No, Why not? Because they're really no depth
- 14:42of talent. Their top end talent can compete
- 14:46with anybody. But when you get to that, when
- 14:49you get to the three consecutive games that you're likely going
- 14:51to have to win, and now that they fixed the bracket, didn't
- 14:54have that cocky Mani system that they had a year ago, they fixed
- 14:56the bracket. The path that Indiana has,
- 14:58they're not going to have a path like Penn State got last year.
- 15:01There's not going to be an opportunity to do what Penn
- 15:04State had last season. And because of that, I don't
- 15:07think that they have the depth because I go all the way back to
- 15:10Farley. So where is the loser of the Big
- 15:1110? Where are they going to be
- 15:13ranked? Who knows you you jump way ahead
- 15:16of yourself on that stuff. Too much football to be played.
- 15:18It's complete guesswork. Well, but they are going to play
- 15:21for for a Big 10 champion. Would you agree with that?
- 15:23And if they're 12 and oh and are competitive, they lose 3121.
- 15:27Yeah, they're not in the top 4, but are they?
- 15:29Are they 6? At 12 and one, are they not?
- 15:33Again, we don't know. We don't know what else has
- 15:35happened across the country. I mean, what if there's a three
- 15:37loss SEC champion? No, they're not.
- 15:39They're not tough, right? There's too much to guess what
- 15:43that's going to be. But when I look at Indiana, that
- 15:46would be the concern. Winning three consecutive games
- 15:48against who? Top level teams Miami, even with
- 15:53Cristobal, who scares the crap out of me.
- 15:55Obviously, Ohio State, you know who.
- 15:57Else, what will the number be? Ohio State?
- 15:59Indiana. Buckeyes neutral.
- 16:04Buckeyes 6 1/2. I was.
- 16:06Going to say 7 so we're on the same page.
- 16:08And at that point, if they're both 12 and Nope, that's also
- 16:12maybe tightened up just a little bit, who can win it?
- 16:15Can Alabama? I love Simpson, yes.
- 16:21I don't know if he's a national champion.
- 16:23He gets better every week, he's actually.
- 16:25So yeah, maybe I'm I'm not being fair there.
- 16:27Texas A&M No, I don't think so, Ole Miss.
- 16:32No, you're playing around with your food with wazoo, you know.
- 16:35How about Texas Tech? Same thing, wonder about top end
- 16:39talent. Absolutely.
- 16:40Win a game against any of the aforementioned teams, Yes they
- 16:43can do that. Win 3 Is the number very small?
- 16:48Is it just a handful of teams that could be?
- 16:49Yeah, Georgia can get better, but it doesn't look like a
- 16:52vintage Georgia team. No, I don't like Stockton.
- 16:54Oregon. No, not anymore.
- 16:57Got beat up LSU too. Limited offensively.
- 17:00Yeah. No, LSU's not quite.
- 17:01Yeah, LSU might not get in. You know, a team.
- 17:04Maybe we'd need to throw in there though.
- 17:06Who? They're way down the list right
- 17:08now. Are they're not in a group 5,
- 17:12they're way down the list now. All right, hang on.
- 17:15It's not Georgia Tech. Nope, it's nobody else in the
- 17:18ACS. Let me just go through.
- 17:19I want to. I want to get this right here.
- 17:22I believe there's only one other team.
- 17:23It's not in the Big 12. It's it's not USC, as much as
- 17:27I'd like to say that it is. It's do they reside in the SEC
- 17:31and if they do, is it? There's no SEC.
- 17:35It's not SEC either. I I I'm stumped.
- 17:37Who is it? Notre Dame.
- 17:39I never thought of that. They're tending to.
- 17:42They got to beat. They got it.
- 17:42They got to take care of business this week.
- 17:44This is a playoff game for them, this elimination.
- 17:46Game they're they're all playoff games now.
- 17:48From that, from here on. Out with that garbage schedule
- 17:50with that. With the exception of the 1st
- 17:512:00 and they lost them both. Yeah, and you got to put a bye
- 17:53week in between them. It's just.
- 17:55Yeah. Though when we're talking about
- 17:58winning a national championship, wasting car, we've seen his A
- 18:02section. He's great.
- 18:03You talk about depth and you talk about that defensive and
- 18:05what they're running into. They have the pieces.
- 18:08So we're talking about a handful of teams, I mean, counted on one
- 18:11hand, I believe that can actually win, not get to the
- 18:14playoff, win a game to win the whole thing.
- 18:17I just think it's different. Indiana's not one of them.
- 18:20In your mind, I. Can't get there.
- 18:22I just can't get there. And maybe it's priors, maybe
- 18:25it's because of what, but I go back to what we talked about
- 18:28Monday, their roster in terms of roster talent from the
- 18:32recruiting services, 72nd in the country.
- 18:36You know, yes, there's misses, yes, there's guys that you
- 18:39don't. I, I guess there's plenty of
- 18:41things that you can excuse and, and say this is the reason for
- 18:44it. Still to do that coupled with
- 18:46what it takes to get there. I mentioned go back to when you
- 18:50and I made the national championship and that long run
- 18:53that they had to get there and they were getting by and I knew
- 18:55a bunch of guys on that team with Scotch D.
- 18:57Chattanooga, right? Yes, they, I mean, they were,
- 19:00they were being held on by a threat.
- 19:02Those guys were so beat up. Kirk Ference talked about then
- 19:05the following couple of years and after talking to Farley just
- 19:08how beat up and that's why he was against a playoff.
- 19:10It was because of the number of games that you have to get
- 19:12there. But when we go through and
- 19:14you're talking about 1516 games to get there, that would be my
- 19:18concern with the Indiana tier of teams.
- 19:20It's just that depth because to get through on Skate, that's
- 19:23just unrealistic. Yeah, Fairpoint.
- 19:25All right, it's 12:20. We're going to get you a
- 19:27keyword. In fact, I'm going to do this
- 19:28right now before we forget the keyword this hour.
- 19:32It's a nationwide contest. You can head to kxno.com.
- 19:35The keyword this hour is check. A pop up box will appear.
- 19:38Once you see that pop up box, type the keyword check.
- 19:42Check at KX and o.com, your chance to win yourself $1000.
- 19:46Check at KX and o.com. More opportunities coming up.
- 19:50Well, one more in our show about an hour or so from right now.
- 19:54And then throughout the afternoon with Lucas and Sean,
- 19:58they'll have I think three more keywords.
- 20:01KX&O still looking for their first winner this go round.
- 20:05All right, let's. Let's get back to the phones
- 20:07here. Ross wants to chime in.
- 20:09Ross, how are you? Hey, that Colorado game in 2005
- 20:14was a Fox Sports net game, which is kind of a regional thing.
- 20:17Yeah, and it was Joel Meyer. That's the guy.
- 20:20Joel Meyers. Bang Joel Meyers.
- 20:23Fun fact, Yeah. Fun fact was, I believe that was
- 20:26Brent Bloom's debut on the radio.
- 20:28No kidding. Want some cut?
- 20:30Won some contest. Probably would dace.
- 20:32Call a touchdown. Probably would date was that was
- 20:35DACE maybe so who was the color analyst who did the color in the
- 20:38game Joel Myers and. Dave.
- 20:41Dave Lapo. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 20:44You're. Right, Jim Knox.
- 20:45On the sidelines, Yeah. Oh, that's way back in the day
- 20:49that Did you have to look that up or did you remember that,
- 20:51Ross? Well done if you did.
- 20:53I, I, I didn't, I remember this the this the channel, but I
- 20:56didn't remember the play by play, but.
- 20:58Yeah. Well, thanks for helping.
- 21:00Me out, wendiest game I've ever been to.
- 21:02I bet, man, I bet. Good stuff.
- 21:03Thank you, Ross. Appreciate the call and you're
- 21:05listening. Good stuff.
- 21:06Joel Myers, he was the voice of the San Antonio Spurs.
- 21:09He did a lot of games. Jim Knox, You remember Jim Knox?
- 21:13Nah, kind of a tiny little guy on he did the sideline.
- 21:17Knoxy. I think they go back in the day.
- 21:20Fox Sports Net, we're just grateful to have as many games
- 21:25on TV at the time, right? It was a different era back in
- 21:27the day. Oh, absolutely.
- 21:29Remember it well. Oh my God, how many times I was
- 21:31hugging and kissing my radio, though it wasn't listening to
- 21:34Zabel. I I've told you that story
- 21:35before, right? So.
- 21:37If you do remind me we were. A Ron Gonder family with with
- 21:40Grandpa Condor. And there were three right at
- 21:42the time. Well, there was even more than
- 21:43that. There was Frosty Mitchell.
- 21:45Yeah, there was Ron Gonder. There was Zabel.
- 21:47We had some people up in North Iowa because at that time it
- 21:50wasn't a network with one boy, right?
- 21:52Each individual. And Dolph changed that, right?
- 21:55Or changed when Dolph got the job.
- 21:57That was that helped with the transition.
- 21:59I think Zabel the last couple of years it had turned into the I.
- 22:02Was on the air. Trend.
- 22:03Oh yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure it was a huge deal.
- 22:05It was. I remember that, yes.
- 22:07Now, did you mention my grandpa would complain?
- 22:08I told you my grandpa's complaints, George Raveling's
- 22:11jumpsuits and Jim Zabel, because he said I can't listen to that
- 22:16guy. I never know what the Hell's
- 22:17happened into the game. Now, I know Grandpa was not
- 22:19alone in that because I've heard that from plenty of people with
- 22:22Zabel. Yeah, didn't exactly Pete the
- 22:25full picture got a little too excited maybe at times.
- 22:28But that passion obviously was great for Zabel.
- 22:31But we were a gonder family. But how many times just sitting,
- 22:34sitting in the yard throwing around a football with myself
- 22:36because I lived in a town of 40 people, there weren't kids to
- 22:38play with and just. Doing the play by play.
- 22:40Oh absolutely. And then replaying it with
- 22:43myself throwing me that. That's what I mean.
- 22:45I'm. Chuck Long, here I go.
- 22:46All right, I'm Halverson catcher and wide open.
- 22:49That's that was a huge part of it.
- 22:52The Ohio State game, the Marv Cook game, we didn't have it on
- 22:55TV, at least I don't remember it being on TVI remember listening
- 22:58to that game on the radio going into Columbus and winning that
- 23:01game when he was down at the 1 yard line.
- 23:04But if there was replay, we're talking about a different
- 23:06conversation in that one. But still.
- 23:09And now today, I think the last Iowa non televised game football
- 23:13was Kirk's first season, 1999. I believe that's the case
- 23:19against the Gophers. Yes, kids, all the games, it's
- 23:22wild. We're not always on television.
- 23:25No, no. And you couldn't go to your
- 23:27computer to follow along either 'cause there was no such thing.
- 23:30It was the radio it. Was the radio and we're still
- 23:32here today. Hell yeah we are.
- 23:34Well he'll be here when when we come back from these commercial
- 23:37messages. And we'll be joined by Lee
- 23:39Sterling from paramountsports.com.
- 23:41Our friend Chris Shipley from Three Beards Media has got a
- 23:44fundraiser event or a not a fundraiser.
- 23:48You know what they're doing They're buying socks and there's
- 23:52a company that's going to match. I'll never forget this as long
- 23:54as I live. It's not the biggest deal story
- 23:56buys but so I'm on I'm in New Orleans and for working for
- 24:01Prairie Meadows and I'm going through the back stretch trying
- 24:03to convince trainers to bring their horses to Prairie Meadows.
- 24:06And I see a guy walking through the barn area with a basket full
- 24:09of socks and he was selling socks.
- 24:12And there was a line up for people to buy socks.
- 24:14And I was thinking of all the things, not not coffee or a
- 24:18breakfast sandwich because it's 7:00 in the morning.
- 24:21People are buying socks. And it's stuck with me ever
- 24:24since then. And it's just how important it
- 24:26is. And you just don't realize,
- 24:28right? You know, one pair of wet, dry
- 24:30or wet socks on anyways. You you like war movies?
- 24:34I love them. I like war movies.
- 24:36How many movies you remember when they talk about change your
- 24:39socks, Yes, yes. Change your socks, Yes.
- 24:42But so Chris Shipley is going to join us.
- 24:45He's let's give us some details on that.
- 24:47We'll help him out as we hope to raise much money as he can to
- 24:51help that in that cause. Miller and Condon, we will be
- 24:54back with Lee Sterling from paramountsports.com.
- 24:57It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:12Hi Miller Condon, welcome back to the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:15Network, Des Moines sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO Lee
- 25:19Sterling paramountsports.com joins us each and every
- 25:23Thursday, well as close to 12:30 as we can get.
- 25:25We went a few minutes past in our opening segment.
- 25:28Lee, sorry to keep you waiting. Good to speak with you.
- 25:30How are you? I'm good, I'm good.
- 25:33It's certainly cause season's going by too fast right there in
- 25:37the middle of the season now. Treats into the choir.
- 25:40Always does. Doesn't it?
- 25:42Yeah, sure does. But things are eating up.
- 25:46A lot of teams are going to be going to have a shot at getting
- 25:49to the playoffs, so that's what makes it so much fun.
- 25:52Indeed. And we the fun starts tomorrow
- 25:54night. And that's really good games.
- 25:56Yes, we got one of them on the docket for you down in your neck
- 25:59of the woods, Lee, as Miami plays host to Louisville.
- 26:02Louisville. They've given Miami some tussles
- 26:04in the past and they always got a ton of kids from down there.
- 26:07Obviously feels like a special game every year for the
- 26:09Cardinal. Getting the opportunity for a
- 26:11lot of these guys to go back home.
- 26:12Big number Miami, some people's number one team in the country
- 26:15laying 13 1/2. Yeah, it is.
- 26:18And if you want to take the top 2 three teams here on out,
- 26:22you're going to have to pay probably an extra price of 2 1/2
- 26:25three points for to do that. And road team is covered to last
- 26:32three meetings here. Between these teams here now, I
- 26:35think Louisville probably has the most skill level talent that
- 26:38Miami has faced. The only problem they've had is
- 26:41Miller Moss. He has some really good plays
- 26:43and some really bad ones. They do not want him throwing
- 26:46the ball like he's done in the last two weeks.
- 26:48I combined 99 times. If he throws the ball more than
- 26:5140 times, usually spells trouble.
- 26:53They need to run the ball more as Kid Brown they got from
- 26:56Homestead hi down here, quite a runner.
- 26:58He's been hobbled if they can get some ball control, they got
- 27:01a chance to hang around here. I I think that the right side is
- 27:05probably Louisville or plus the 13 half.
- 27:07Miami is very good, defense is improved, but they're going to
- 27:11score, I think, if not every time, every other time.
- 27:14I think Miami wins this game something like 4538.
- 27:18All right, but easy cover for Louisville if that's the case.
- 27:22Well, when the schedule came out, Texas Tech and Arizona
- 27:24State seemed to be a marquee game potentially in the Big 12.
- 27:27And it is. Texas Tech is unbeaten.
- 27:29Arizona State trying to hang around and and get back to the
- 27:32championship game. Texas Tech a big favorite.
- 27:35Lee, the Red Raiders favored on the road by 11 1/2.
- 27:39Yeah, it it is a lot. And their defense, that's the
- 27:43difference issue. This defense allowing just 67
- 27:47yards per game, they usually allow that per drive running the
- 27:51football, they're 8th also against the past.
- 27:56So we've never seen a team like this that I can remember.
- 27:59Usually the defensive lines are so weak, but if you've got four
- 28:02really good guys up front, it's stop to run and also helps your
- 28:06past defense. They've always been good running
- 28:09the football. Now we don't know the exact
- 28:11status of of Levitt, the quarterback here for Arizona
- 28:15State, but I I expect him to probably play in this game.
- 28:18Doesn't make any difference. Even if Baron Morton doesn't
- 28:21play for Texas Tech, they got three good ones here.
- 28:24So even their special teams have been special this year.
- 28:27So when you're scoring 47 1/2 points per game, it's going to
- 28:30be tough here for Arizona State. Here last week they were
- 28:33horrendous on offense, just 3.3 yards per pass attempt with Jeff
- 28:38Sims. He's never been able to get the
- 28:39job done. So Blevit goes out.
- 28:42Might want to think about some end game betting there in bed.
- 28:44Tech, but I like tech. I think they're the right side
- 28:46here. Something like 3818?
- 28:48Let's stay in the Big 12, BYU, Utah and the Holy War.
- 28:52Both teams ranked for the first time since they were in the
- 28:55Mountain West some 20 years ago. Not the case here.
- 28:57Now in the Big 12, Utah a 3 1/2 point favorite.
- 29:02I I was a little shocked. What did you think the line was
- 29:04going to be when it came out? Ken and I are both higher on
- 29:07Utah and lower than BYU I think in the market.
- 29:10So I don't think either of us were surprised.
- 29:12But I I know you were not alone in that that thought, Lee.
- 29:17Yep, I thought it was going to be a pick em baby Utah one.
- 29:20I mean, this is a game that is is is bitter.
- 29:23The holy war. Last year, BYU won last second
- 29:27field goal 22 to 21. They were plus 3 1/2, same line.
- 29:31Again, there's no question Devin Dampier is the best player on
- 29:34the field. Dynamic, 11 touchdown passes, 5
- 29:38touchdown runs. He's got a decent supporting
- 29:40cast. You know, he's got Parker the
- 29:44runner who's good. I mean, 335 yards, he's solid.
- 29:48But other than that, I mean his ties in Bentley is receiver
- 29:52Davis. They're catching balls just for
- 29:5611.3 and 10.7 yards for reception.
- 29:59So they are not real dynamic. We're on the other hand, even
- 30:02though Bear Bachman are not in the class of Devin Dampier, I
- 30:06think that they just have better weapons here.
- 30:08I mean they've got 3 receivers here, Roberts, Kingston and
- 30:11Tynan Ryan averaging anywhere from 14 1/2 to 19 yards
- 30:15reception. The better runner in LJ Martin
- 30:18already has 652 yards here. I think they're going to put a
- 30:21spy a lot of time on Devon Dampier.
- 30:24You shut him down, don't allow him to run just like Tech did.
- 30:29You can slow him down and slow the team down here.
- 30:32I'm calling for the upset here. Wrong team favored.
- 30:35BYU does it again at home 2624. Yep.
- 30:40All right. By the way, Baron Morton is
- 30:42listed as questionable. Levitt probable on the
- 30:45availability report. Well, back to Friday night.
- 30:48Can't wait for this one. The Huskers, who I thought
- 30:50really looked good and especially in that final drive
- 30:53last week, Nebraska, an 8 point favorite over Minnesota team
- 30:56that really struggled against the boilers, Lee.
- 31:00Yeah, they did. You know, they write your
- 31:02freshman quarterback. Think it's going to take some
- 31:04time. But what's interesting about
- 31:06Minnesota, they always seem to be able to play with teams that
- 31:10are close to their level. When they're totally outclassed,
- 31:14they have trouble here. I think maybe there's a little
- 31:17bit of a distraction here with Matt Rule that people were
- 31:21talking about him leaving here, but Dylan Rayola just in the
- 31:25last two weeks, 5 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, making some bad
- 31:29decisions here. So even though they did not win
- 31:33the game big last week, Drake and Lindsay did look better in
- 31:35the fourth quarter. Nebraska two and five against
- 31:38the spread. It's a favorite on the road in
- 31:40neutral site games last 13 games away from Lincoln, only two
- 31:45games where they've won by more than 7 points.
- 31:47The Gophers so tough as a home dog last year they beat USC is a
- 31:519 1/2 point underdog and only lost by 1 is a double digit dog
- 31:56versus Penn State, Nebraska. They survive the Scare, 3127.
- 32:02That's a cover for Phil Fleck and the Gophers.
- 32:04We wrap it up in Kiddick Stadium.
- 32:06Iowa welcomes in Penn State. Look, headline this summer had
- 32:09Penn State favor by 10 1/2. Oh, how different this season's
- 32:12looking now for the nits. Iowa laying 3 1/2 at home.
- 32:17All right, so I, I loved what I saw last week.
- 32:19No, mercy did not let up. And that's important this time
- 32:24of year and playing a team here that certainly is down.
- 32:28This Penn State team. I, I know that they have a new
- 32:31coach and some people will say, oh, you know, he's these, these
- 32:34players, they want to, you know, show what they have so they can
- 32:37get playing time. But playing with a third string
- 32:39quarterback, that's what they're doing.
- 32:40Their backup quarterback, Bob Parbella transferred to
- 32:43Missouri. So I I just don't think they're
- 32:46going to can be able to push the ball down the field here and
- 32:49Iowa can do enough throwing the football and special teams will
- 32:52be the difference here. I think they're catching a Penn
- 32:55State team that is totally down and maybe look list you know
- 32:58what put your neck on them here. Iowa wins this game here 2417
- 33:03and covers. All right, your Game of the Week
- 33:05is another Big 10 game. It's Indiana, and it's Michigan.
- 33:09State of the audience wants more information on your Game of the
- 33:11Weekly. What do they do?
- 33:14Yeah, a lot of people, I think, are a little surprised by the
- 33:16line. But you know, what we've seen
- 33:18the last couple weeks has pushed up the line.
- 33:20Is it warranted? Can Indiana win by four more
- 33:23touchdowns? Orkin, Michigan State.
- 33:25So show us some life here. First five callers get it for
- 33:28free, 800-400-9741. First five callers are going to
- 33:32get Indiana, Michigan State, 800-400-9741.
- 33:37How about this? The last four weeks in the NFL,
- 33:39Four weeks ago we went five and O, 3 weeks ago, 5 and O, two
- 33:44weeks ago, 5 and O and I let everyone down.
- 33:46Last week we went four and one. We're on a 19 and one run in the
- 33:52NFL. We have a new item, it's called
- 33:54Lee's NFL Sunday Golden Ticket. Four weeks of NFL selections, my
- 34:00top five every week. How about this?
- 34:03Just $197.00 one place, paramountsports.com.
- 34:08Good stuff, Lee. We'll talk to you next Thursday.
- 34:11Thank you. OK.
- 34:12Thanks guys. Yep, good to talk to you at
- 34:14least Sterling paramountsports.com 19 and one
- 34:17in the NFL. I did not realize Indiana's
- 34:19favored that many times. 28 points. 27 1/2 is that was Jesus
- 34:23she. Can say.
- 34:25Yeah, I know. I will see them the penultimate
- 34:28week of the season, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:31Chris Shipley next. We're going to help him out with
- 34:33his fundraiser that he's part of.
- 34:35Our number 2. Dane Mazatani will kick it off.
- 34:38Then we'll hear from Nick Athan. Then we'll hear from Stephen M
- 34:40Simple and Trent will make some picks.
- 34:42Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 34:45Radio Network. Hi Mallory Condon, welcome back

- 35:34hearing regarding that rule. But right now, our buddy Chris

- 36:19So we're offering great specials and deals on tours.
- 36:24When you come in a tour with one of our properties and our
- 36:26communities, you bring in a pair of socks, you'll get some waived
- 36:30admin fees or maybe even a rent special or something like that.
- 36:33And then what we're doing at the end of this is Artisan is going
- 36:36to match socks for sock as you would say.
- 36:40So if we bring in 5000 socks across across our our campaign,
- 36:46then artists and will also donate another 5000 socks to
- 36:50those local communities. So you know, KXNO is the Iowa
- 36:54radio, the Iowa sports radio station.
- 36:57If there's a location near you guys, we probably have a
- 37:00community there that's going to be able to give locally as well.
- 37:02So the best way to to donate into is if you want to stop in,
- 37:07if you're looking for a place to live, a new home, stop into one
- 37:10of our communities, take a tour, donate some socks.
- 37:13You can do that. Or if you visit
- 37:15ourwebsite@artisanmanagementgroup.com/october, there's a link there to our
- 37:21Amazon wishlist and you can just purchase some socks and send it
- 37:24right to me at the corporate office.
- 37:25That's great, a great idea and something that Ken and I were
- 37:29mentioning this earlier, Chris, it's just it's something you
- 37:31think about helping out, you think of the food pantry, things
- 37:34like that. But this is an incredibly
- 37:35important thing for people in need.
- 37:38Yeah, I mean, we're getting into the cold months, you know, and
- 37:42and it's just even young children, you'd be amazed.
- 37:45I can, I can tell you that my wife is a teacher on the South
- 37:49Side and there's kids that show up there without proper socks
- 37:53and they'll show up without a coat, things like that.
- 37:55So things that you and I take for granted can be such a huge
- 37:59need for them. So, and then we are also giving
- 38:02out artisan branded socks to people that come in and, and
- 38:06sign a lease and things like that.
- 38:07So we've got some super cool branded socks that we're going
- 38:09to give out. But we are, we are so excited to
- 38:12be able to make a donation, you know, a sock to sock donation as
- 38:17it will. I always want to say dollar to
- 38:19for dollar, but it's it's sock for sock so.
- 38:23When it when it comes to an end, when you guys do make that
- 38:25donation, I'm anxious to know how many, how many pairs of
- 38:28socks that you guys give out? A obviously the ones you get in
- 38:31and then what you're going to match as I hope it's a it's a
- 38:34huge number, Chris. Good stuff.
- 38:36Thanks for coming on. And this goes through when
- 38:38Chris? This is October 13th that
- 38:40started this week to November 10th.
- 38:43So again, you can just visit our website and go to that donation
- 38:46that's October link and and there's a wish list right there,
- 38:49so. Website one more time.

- 39:54Do you like the NFL slate of games this week from a betting
- 39:56perspective? I think there's some good ones
