- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. All right, if you guys are
- 0:24watching, you might notice that we have a pink microphone now.
- 0:27So I got these Rd. covers for our mics.
- 0:30I'm hoping it helps with like the popping and if you guys hear
- 0:34mouth sounds and things like that, every once in a while we
- 0:36get a comment about that. Yes, hopefully this like double
- 0:40protection that we have now helps.
- 0:43OK, let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:45The first story that I have for you guys.
- 0:47I forgot to cover this yesterday, but there has been
- 0:49some like quote UN quote drama unfolding between Connor Franta
- 0:53and Troy Savant over the past two weeks.
- 0:56So this is quite the throwback. It all started when Troy posted
- 1:00the iconic picture of him, Connor Franta and Chapel Roan
- 1:04before she was like the Chapel Roan to his Instagram on August
- 1:0715th. The catch was that he had
- 1:10cropped Connor out of the photo. The photo was the first photo in
- 1:13a dump that was captioned a series of images.
- 1:16He reportedly clarified that it was not his crop writing FYII
- 1:20found that pic online doing my weekly Google of Troye, Sivan
- 1:22and Chapelron. Not my crop.
- 1:24Anyway, the post was a big deal to fans of Troye and Connor
- 1:28because in the mid twenty 10s there were rumors circulating
- 1:31for years that Troy and Connor were together.
- 1:33Their ship name was actually Tronner.
- 1:36A day later, Connor went on to post the picture with This Time
- 1:40with Troy cropped out. His post was captioned My Good
- 1:42Side, which many took as a reference to Troy song The Good
- 1:46Side, which was from his 2018 album Bloom.
- 1:50The song is a sort of apology to an ex-boyfriend about how their
- 1:53breakup went down. Many believe the song is about
- 1:56Connor. So this back and forth led to
- 1:58Connor posting a video on YouTube also titled My Good
- 2:01Side. In the video, Connor
- 2:02acknowledged the back and forth on Instagram before admitting
- 2:05his surprise that people still cared about quote a relationship
- 2:08I had for two years. Through the video, he didn't
- 2:11mention Troy by name or anything, but it was very clear
- 2:14who he was talking about. When addressing the post, he
- 2:16clarified there was no drama between him and his former
- 2:19boyfriend. He even explained that they had
- 2:21crossed paths at an event in recent years after breaking up
- 2:24and it was very smooth. He did reflect on the song,
- 2:27however. He also didn't say it by name,
- 2:30but he said quote the horrible thing about that song.
- 2:32I mean he was right, but he was also completely wrong.
- 2:36I think he got the good side of things emotionally, but I think
- 2:38in many ways a song like that neglects the idea that people
- 2:41are individuals and everyone chooses their own path in life.
- 2:44I think the good side of life is completely subjective.
- 2:47And the older I get, the more I realize I'm living my good, good
- 2:50side. To me, my life is exceptional.
- 2:52And then he finished his video with a message to his viewers
- 2:55and to Troy. He first said a big thank you to
- 2:58anyone who continues to consume his content, saying that having
- 3:00a platform is, quote, the honor of his life, which is so cute.
- 3:04Meanwhile, his message to Troy was quote, I just want to let
- 3:07you know that I'm proud of you for every single thing that
- 3:09you've done. Stan's believe that this is also
- 3:12another call back to the good side.
- 3:14The song again, where the lyrics are, quote.
- 3:16I'm sure we'll meet in the spring and catch up on
- 3:19everything also say I'm proud of all that you've done.
- 3:21OK like obviously obviously that's a call back to that so a
- 3:25wholesome conclusion but people are dying that Chapel Roan is
- 3:29like at the center of this. So many of the comments under
- 3:32the video about Chapel like this one quote Chapel Roan being the
- 3:35reason of getting closure on some 2014 lore was not in my
- 3:39bingo cars. All right the next right that I
- 3:41have for you guys is also something that unfolded earlier
- 3:46this month. It only just came across my
- 3:48desk, but it is very OG to Centennial.
- 3:52Like it is about the beauty community.
- 3:54It's about a collab scandal like that really feels like native to
- 3:59how Centennial started. So I wanted to cover it even
- 4:02though like I said, it is a little bit old.
- 4:04This all went down like mid August.
- 4:06But I don't know, I like I didn't even see it.
- 4:08So there is a bit of like a scandal around Made by Mitchell,
- 4:13the makeup brand by UK influencer Mitchell Halliday,
- 4:17where people are calling a collab that he had in the works
- 4:21a scam. So like I said, Mitchell Holiday
- 4:23is Auk beauty influencer. He has his own brand called Made
- 4:26by Mitchell. The company was apparently
- 4:28really struggling, but then they got on TikTok shop a couple of
- 4:32years ago. They've had a lot of products go
- 4:34viral. They've seen a lot of success
- 4:36from that. So they've really been popping
- 4:37off in the last couple of years. Now this collab scandal
- 4:41situation starts in March 2023. So on March 15th 2023 Mitchell
- 4:47announced a global beauty competition called a Full Face
- 4:50of Color Case and the prize was a winner would basically be able
- 4:54to design their own collection with made by Mitchell and earn
- 4:58Commission on those sales. The winner was a creator named
- 5:01Malachi and earlier this month he made a multi video series on
- 5:06how this all went down and basically blew up in his face.
- 5:09So according to Malachi, he had a call with Mitchell scheduled
- 5:13on May 23rd after the announcement of him winning.
- 5:16Mitchell postponed this at the last minute saying he'd be too
- 5:19busy. Two days later they spoke and
- 5:22Mitchell invited him to Liverpool in June to discuss
- 5:25business ideas. When Malachi arrived, he says
- 5:28that Mitchell was hours late, but eventually they did meet and
- 5:32Malachi shared an art book and sketchbook of different
- 5:35concepts. He claims that he was told the
- 5:37collection would include 10 to 15 products and they would be
- 5:40aiming for a Christmas launch. Before he left, Mitchell gave
- 5:43him a package of products, showing the giveaway off on
- 5:46TikTok Live. Malachi accidentally left behind
- 5:49his sketchbook, art book and the makeup package, but said that
- 5:52Mitchell promised to mail them the next day.
- 5:55He was also told, apparently, that the contract for this
- 5:58collab would be ready in their next meeting.
- 6:01Weeks passed and Malachi says neither his books nor the
- 6:04package of makeup ever arrived. By late August, he messaged
- 6:07Mitchell. He claims that Mitchell
- 6:09reassured him that these things take time and progress would
- 6:12come soon. When Malachi followed up in
- 6:15October, he says he got no response and by the end of 2023,
- 6:19still nothing had moved forward. A full year later, in March
- 6:242024, Malachi finally heard back.
- 6:27Sarah, who was a member of the Made by Mitchell team, sent him
- 6:31an NDA and a woman named Holly arranged a call to discuss the
- 6:34project. But instead of moving forward
- 6:37with his original idea, Malachi claims that he was asked to
- 6:40pitch new concepts again, this time for a box set as opposed to
- 6:45a full line. He says he initially didn't like
- 6:47this idea because selling something as a box that he felt
- 6:50would be too expensive for consumers.
- 6:52So he says after this meeting, Mitchell emailed him thanking
- 6:55him for his ideas, and then Malachi responded saying he
- 6:58wanted to stick to an affordable collection, not a luxury box
- 7:02set. He also says that he was told he
- 7:04wouldn't be paid upfront, only through Commission on TikTok
- 7:08shop sales. He says it was far from the,
- 7:11quote, life changing money that Mitchell had promised in the
- 7:15initial like collaboration announcement.
- 7:18Then in September 2024, Malachi claims he was invited back to
- 7:21Liverpool for another meeting. Once again there was no contract
- 7:25and he was asked to share even more ideas.
- 7:28Malachi says he didn't even hear back from them after this until
- 7:31January 2025. On a call with this woman,
- 7:34Sarah, he reminded her of Mitchell's promise of, quote,
- 7:37life changing money. Weeks later, he was introduced
- 7:40to Mitchell's business manager Jeanine, who allegedly assured
- 7:43him a contract was on its way. After months of back and forth,
- 7:46Malachi says the contract finally arrived in late May
- 7:492025, and it didn't reflect what he'd been promised.
- 7:53Instead, it was basically only slightly better than the TikTok
- 7:56shop deal. Malachi sent Mitchell a long
- 7:59message of frustration. He says he'd put other
- 8:02opportunities on hold, that his audience was still asking him
- 8:05for this collab. And when Mitchell finally
- 8:08responded, he kept it short. He said from then on,
- 8:10communication would go through Jeanine.
- 8:12And then on July 9th, Malachi walked away, telling Mitchell
- 8:16the deal was nowhere near what had been promised.
- 8:19And then, of course, about a month later, he made all of
- 8:21these videos. So Mitchell did respond to his
- 8:24videos on TikTok. He admitted that he had quote
- 8:27bit off more than he could chew, saying that he hadn't run the
- 8:30competition properly. He apologized to Malachi,
- 8:33acknowledged that he hadn't dedicated enough time to push
- 8:36the project through. Quote First of all, and most of
- 8:38all, I want to apologize to Malachi for how this experience
- 8:41has felt for him. I didn't prioritize the time to
- 8:44get this collection through the gate the way I intended when I
- 8:46first launched the challenge. The excuse he gave was basically
- 8:50that made by Mitchell exploded overnight, which I already
- 8:52mentioned, right, largely because of TikTok shop.
- 8:54And so of course, that's going to kind of change your
- 8:56priorities, take a lot of your time and energy and like just be
- 9:00incredibly overwhelming for the founder if something blows up
- 9:03like that, I guess. But he said he was still open to
- 9:05a collaboration moving forward. And as far as I could see, all
- 9:09of these videos have since been removed.
- 9:11I've seen some people say, well, like 2 years is a normal amount
- 9:14of time for a collab to get off the ground.
- 9:17However, I think the problem here is that nothing was moving
- 9:20forward. Like, yes, maybe 2 years to like
- 9:22put products like an entire collection into production,
- 9:26right? Like manufacturing, like coming
- 9:27up with everything design wise, formula wise, packaging, all of
- 9:32that and then put it into production and then get it out
- 9:35for sale. Sure, that could be two years
- 9:37and that could be normal, but Malachi didn't even have a
- 9:39contract to sign for the first like 18 months.
- 9:41So like nothing was in production, like nothing was
- 9:43moving forward. I also saw somewhere on Reddit,
- 9:46again, like a lot of these videos have been removed so I
- 9:48haven't been able to Fact Check this, but I saw on Reddit people
- 9:50saying that Malachi was really naive because he apparently was
- 9:54saying he was expecting like a six figure partnership deal.
- 9:57Like collaboration deal because it was branded as like life
- 10:00changing money. The way that Mitchell promoted
- 10:02this challenge and talked about what this opportunity would do
- 10:06for the winners. Like yeah, I can see why he
- 10:09maybe thought that. I do think the language that we
- 10:11use around public promises, giveaways, challenges, that kind
- 10:15of stuff is really important because it can really impact
- 10:17people. So yeah, it's it's an
- 10:19unfortunate situation across the board.
- 10:22But like, of course, as you can imagine, the Internet is
- 10:25overwhelmingly on Malachi's side.
- 10:27All right, and the last story that I have for you guys, this
- 10:29is just a quick one, but Madison Beer is rumored to be in a new
- 10:33relationship. So Madison Beer has been spotted
- 10:37and is rumored to be dating Los Angeles Chargers quarterback
- 10:40Justin Herbert. The two were first spotted
- 10:42together on August 18th, and there have since been several
- 10:45paparazzi shots of them together.
- 10:47A lot of Internet users, at least on Reddit, think that this
- 10:50could be PR for her album release, mostly because the
- 10:54paparazzi shots are from Back Rib, which is the agency that
- 10:57celebrities can call on themselves.
- 10:59I guess this would be getting her in the headlines, you know,
- 11:02So it's kind of drumming up some buzz around her before her album
- 11:04releases. If she has an album coming out.
- 11:06I don't even know that. But yeah, I also didn't know she
- 11:08was not dating Nick Austin anymore.
- 11:10So Madison dated Tick Tocker Nick Austin for so long, and
- 11:13they broke up in 2024. And I mean, I'm not that
- 11:18surprised, like Nick Austin was like a friend of in the TikTok
- 11:22hype house and I'm almost certain he dropped out of high
- 11:24school to be like adjacent to the hype house.
- 11:28And when he was criticized about that, I this just burned in my
- 11:31brain. Like, you know, when you just
- 11:32have like these random facts that happened in pop culture
- 11:35that are just burned in your brain.
- 11:37I will like never forget that he publicly addressed people like
- 11:41basically criticizing him and making fun of him for dropping
- 11:43out of high school to like kind of adjacently join the hype
- 11:46house. Like he wasn't even in the hype
- 11:48house. I'm pretty sure he was just
- 11:49friends with Alex Warren, Oregon Thomas Petrou or like one of
- 11:53those guys. And I remember he defended
- 11:54himself so staunchly being like, I'm moving to LA to like join
- 11:57forces with the most popular, you know, TikTok house or
- 12:01whatever, like making millions of dollars, blah, blah, blah.
- 12:04And yeah, unfortunately, where is the hype house now?
- 12:08Unfortunately, but he got to date Madison beer from it.
- 12:11So you know what's live. And he still has 3,000,000
- 12:13followers on Instagram and 8 million followers on TikTok.
- 12:17So you know what, he probably actually has a pretty OK career.
- 12:20So you know what, go forth, Nick Austin, I'm happy for you.
- 12:24Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 12:25Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 12:28Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 12:30This was a bit of a light Newsday.
- 12:32It's very rare that we like struggle to find stories, but
- 12:35today we were scraping OK. So hopefully when I talked to
- 12:38you guys on Thursday, the stories will be fresher.
- 12:41Anyways, I love you guys and I will talk to you on Thursday and
- 12:43Annabelle will talk to you guys tomorrow.
- 12:45Bye, yeah.
