- 0:22Speaker 1: Well, God bless each and every one of you. May
- 0:24Speaker 1: He give you strength and sustain you during these unique
- 0:28Speaker 1: and oftentimes difficult times. God bless you especially. We're praying
- 0:33Speaker 1: today for fathers, for parents, for families. In fact, Lord,
- 0:38Speaker 1: we ask you, we ask a blessing to be upon
- 0:41Speaker 1: every person who hears this message. All of us have
- 0:44Speaker 1: different experiences Father with a father. All of us have
- 0:49Speaker 1: different experiences with a family. But we believe, Heavenly Father,
- 0:53Speaker 1: that every family is a part of your plan, and
- 0:57Speaker 1: you have given us a structure, an idea, I blueprint
- 1:00Speaker 1: for the family. And we pray, Heavenly Father, that we
- 1:03Speaker 1: can heed what you say and follow in that we
- 1:07Speaker 1: can receive your blessing, because apart from it, Father, we
- 1:10Speaker 1: have no hope.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We bless you now the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Amen, you know my first pet came in the form
- 1:19Speaker 1: of a childhood Christmas gift. Somewhere I have a snapshot
- 1:23Speaker 1: of a brown and white Chinese pug Oh boy, small
- 1:27Speaker 1: enough to fit in my father's hand, cute enough to
- 1:29Speaker 1: steal my eight year old heart. We named her Liz.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I carried her all day. Her floppy ears fascinated me,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and her flat nose intrigued me. I even took her
- 1:41Speaker 1: to bed. So what if she smelled like a dog.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I thought the odor was cute? So what if she
- 1:46Speaker 1: whined and whimpered? I thought the noise was cute. So
- 1:50Speaker 1: what if she did her business on my pillow? Well
- 1:53Speaker 1: she really did, and I can't say I thought that
- 1:55Speaker 1: was cute, But I didn't mind. Now, Mom and Dad
- 1:59Speaker 1: had made it clear in our puppy prenuptial agreement that
- 2:02Speaker 1: I was to be Liz's caretaker, and I was happy
- 2:05Speaker 1: to oblige. I cleaned her a little eating dish. I
- 2:08Speaker 1: opened her can of puppy food. The minute she laughed
- 2:12Speaker 1: up some water, I replenished it. I kept her hair combed,
- 2:15Speaker 1: I kept her tail wagging. Within a few days, however,
- 2:21Speaker 1: my feelings.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Changed a bit.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Liz was still my dog, and I was still her friend.
- 2:25Speaker 1: But I got to tell you, I got tired of
- 2:27Speaker 1: her barking. She seemed hungry all the time, and more
- 2:31Speaker 1: than once my folks had to remind me take care
- 2:34Speaker 1: of her. Max she is your dog. Oh boy, I
- 2:38Speaker 1: didn't like hearing those words your dog. I wouldn't have
- 2:43Speaker 1: minded the phrase your dog to play with, or your
- 2:46Speaker 1: dog when you want her, even your dog when she's behaving.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But those weren't my parents' words. They said, Liz is
- 2:54Speaker 1: your dog period in sickness and in health, for richer,
- 2:59Speaker 1: for poorer, in dryness and in wetness. That's when it
- 3:04Speaker 1: occurred to me, I'm stuck with Liz. The courtship was over,
- 3:09Speaker 1: the honeymoon had ended. We were mutually leashed, and Liz
- 3:13Speaker 1: went from an option to an obligation, from a pet
- 3:16Speaker 1: to itch or someone to play with to someone to
- 3:20Speaker 1: care for. I'm wondering if you can relate. Maybe the
- 3:25Speaker 1: stay at home experience of the last few days has
- 3:28Speaker 1: left you feeling the same way. Chances are you know
- 3:32Speaker 1: the claustrophobia that comes with commitment. Only instead of being
- 3:36Speaker 1: reminded she is your dog, you're told well, he is
- 3:39Speaker 1: your husband, or she's your wife, or he is your child,
- 3:45Speaker 1: or they are your parents. Such permanence can lead to panic,
- 3:50Speaker 1: At least it did in me.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I had to answer some tough questions.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Can I tolerate the same flat nosed, hairy, hungry face
- 3:57Speaker 1: every morning? You wives know the feeling? Am I going
- 4:02Speaker 1: to be barked at until the day I die? Any
- 4:05Speaker 1: kids connecting here? Well she ever learned to clean up
- 4:09Speaker 1: her own mess? Did I just hear an amen? From
- 4:13Speaker 1: some parents? Such are the questions we ask when we
- 4:17Speaker 1: feel stuck with someone. You know, there's a word for
- 4:20Speaker 1: this condition. Upon consulting the one word medical Dictionary, which
- 4:24Speaker 1: I wrote yesterday, I discovered this condition is a common
- 4:30Speaker 1: malady known as stuck a titus. Stuck meaning trapped, I
- 4:36Speaker 1: titus meaning the six words you tag onto any word
- 4:40Speaker 1: that you want to sound impressive, Say it out loud
- 4:43Speaker 1: with me, stuck it titus. Max's Manual of Medical Terms
- 4:49Speaker 1: had this to say about the condition.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Attacks of stuck a.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Titus are limited to people who breathe and typically occur
- 4:57Speaker 1: somewhere between birth and death. Stuccatitis manifests itself in irritability,
- 5:04Speaker 1: short fuses, and a mountain range of mole hills. The
- 5:08Speaker 1: common symptom of stuccatitis victims is the repetition of the
- 5:12Speaker 1: questions beginning with.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Who, what and why?
- 5:15Speaker 1: Who is this person? What was I thinking? And why
- 5:20Speaker 1: didn't I listen to my mother? This prestigious manual identifies
- 5:26Speaker 1: three ways to copas stuccatitis. Some opt to flee to
- 5:30Speaker 1: get out of the relationship and start again elsewhere, although
- 5:34Speaker 1: they are often surprised when the condition surfaces on the
- 5:38Speaker 1: other side of the fence as well.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Other fight houses.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Become combat zones, offices become boxing rings, and tension becomes
- 5:47Speaker 1: a way of life. A few, however, discover another treatment,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and that is compassionate commitment. That would be one way
- 5:59Speaker 1: of dec describing the admonition of Paul to families as
- 6:03Speaker 1: found in the Book of Colossians. By the way, I
- 6:06Speaker 1: hope you're participating in and enjoying the Colossians reading challenge. Now,
- 6:12Speaker 1: before we read this scripture, I'd like to do something.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I'd like to declare a moment of grace, a blessing
- 6:19Speaker 1: of grace over this message, because sermons about the family
- 6:23Speaker 1: have a way of generating guilt.
- 6:26Speaker 2: The truth is, folks, none of us score in a plus.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Each husband could be more attended, each wife could be
- 6:33Speaker 1: more supportive, each parent could be wiser, each child could
- 6:37Speaker 1: be more respectful. And if the passage that we are
- 6:40Speaker 1: about to read does not describe you and your family,
- 6:43Speaker 1: that's okay, You're in good company. It only describes God's
- 6:47Speaker 1: ideal for the family. The truth of the matter is
- 6:51Speaker 1: all of us fall short. And the problem with the
- 6:54Speaker 1: phrase dysfunctional family is that it implies the existence of
- 6:58Speaker 1: a functional one. If you're struggling. It was not Paul's intent,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's not my intent, and it's certainly not your heavenly
- 7:06Speaker 1: father's intent to pull you down. Okay, Now, with that disclaimer,
- 7:12Speaker 1: consider these four admonitions. First, wives, submit to your husbands
- 7:20Speaker 1: as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands. Love your wives,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your
- 7:28Speaker 1: parents and everything for this pleases the Lord.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Fathers.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
- 7:38Speaker 1: A review of this passage results in some key principles
- 7:42Speaker 1: of the home. First of all, your family matters to God.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Your family matters to God, as you've observed as we
- 7:50Speaker 1: studied a Colossians, this epistle highlights the pre eminence of Christ.
- 7:56Speaker 1: He is pre eminent over the universe, pre eminent over
- 8:00Speaker 1: the Church, pre eminent over our Christian conduct. He's high
- 8:03Speaker 1: and above and deep within. The letter to the Colossians
- 8:08Speaker 1: is full of lofty ideas and lilting language. It feels well,
- 8:14Speaker 1: it feels royal, regal, deserves to be read in a
- 8:18Speaker 1: museum or a cathedral. So what is the significance that
- 8:22Speaker 1: the home is included.
- 8:25Speaker 2: In this epistle?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Does it not suggest that the Christ who is the
- 8:31Speaker 1: lord over the cosmos, he is the Christ who desires
- 8:36Speaker 1: to be the lord in the kitchen. The same power
- 8:41Speaker 1: that sustains the galaxies is the power that will bless
- 8:44Speaker 1: your dinner table conversation. Jesus Christ, who holds all things together,
- 8:52Speaker 1: is the one who is willing to hold all things
- 8:55Speaker 1: together in your home. You see, your family is God's idea.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Before there was a government, before there was an educational system,
- 9:06Speaker 1: before there was a church, there was the family. The
- 9:10Speaker 1: most ancient institute was God's idea. A man and a
- 9:16Speaker 1: woman joined by God for life, and together they recreate,
- 9:21Speaker 1: They pro create, and they reflect the intimacy that God
- 9:26Speaker 1: desires to have with us. So your family matters to God.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Are you married well? The way you relate to your
- 9:33Speaker 1: spouse matters to God. You have children well, the way
- 9:36Speaker 1: you raise them matters to God. Do you have parents?
- 9:40Speaker 1: Your attitude toward them matters to God. These relationships are
- 9:46Speaker 1: part of God's plan, not to be taken lightly. The
- 9:50Speaker 1: very fact that marriage is mentioned in the Bible in
- 9:52Speaker 1: this elevated epistle is a reminder that your family, your
- 9:57Speaker 1: family is elevated before God. He has some specific instructions
- 10:03Speaker 1: to each member of the family. He says this to
- 10:06Speaker 1: the wives. Wives, submit to your husbands as is fitting
- 10:12Speaker 1: in the Lord. Did I just pull a pen out
- 10:15Speaker 1: of a hand grenade? By reading that passage? Would any
- 10:21Speaker 1: statement rouse the ire of our rights seeking equality pursuing
- 10:26Speaker 1: culture more than this? How dare Paul himself, a bachelor
- 10:31Speaker 1: make such a statement yet further proof that the Bible
- 10:35Speaker 1: is antiquated, out of touch and irrelevant. Wives are suppressed
- 10:39Speaker 1: and husbands are blessed to whatever, do whatever they want. Now,
- 10:45Speaker 1: to all those thoughts and voices, can I just ask
- 10:48Speaker 1: you reserve your judgment for a few moments.
- 10:53Speaker 2: The fact of the matter.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Is that Paul actually honored wives in this passage. The
- 10:59Speaker 1: simple fact that he mentioned wives first, and mentioned them
- 11:04Speaker 1: at all, flew in the face of the culture in
- 11:08Speaker 1: his day. In his commentary, William Barklay has this to say.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Under Jewish law, a woman was a thing. She was
- 11:18Speaker 1: the possession of her husband. She had no legal right whatsoever.
- 11:23Speaker 1: In Greek society, a respectable woman lived a life of
- 11:27Speaker 1: entire seclusion. Her husband could go out as much as
- 11:31Speaker 1: he chose, and could enter into as many relationships outside
- 11:35Speaker 1: of marriage as he liked, and incur no stigma. Both
- 11:39Speaker 1: under Jewish and Greek laws and customs, all the privileges
- 11:43Speaker 1: belonged to the husband, and all the duties belonged to
- 11:46Speaker 1: the wife. Now the apostle Paul, by contrast, elevates women
- 11:52Speaker 1: to a place of respect. Wives were addressed equally with
- 11:56Speaker 1: their husbands. This was entirely newly knew. Both husbands and
- 12:01Speaker 1: wives were admonished in the Lord. In the Lord, the
- 12:05Speaker 1: female and the male are recognized as under the lordship
- 12:11Speaker 1: of Christ. Now, all of this was greatly elevating to
- 12:14Speaker 1: the women of the ancient world. The Church of Jesus
- 12:18Speaker 1: Christ celebrated women more than any other group of its day.
- 12:23Speaker 1: There is no indication that a first century female would
- 12:26Speaker 1: read these words and feel suppressed. God would not want
- 12:30Speaker 1: females of the first century to feel suppressed, and he
- 12:33Speaker 1: would not want females of this century to feel suppressed. Now,
- 12:38Speaker 1: look carefully at the language. The phrase submit yourselves is
- 12:42Speaker 1: not to be understood as cowering before, but it's more
- 12:47Speaker 1: the idea of respect. The same apostle and a different
- 12:52Speaker 1: epistle said this, Each one of you must love his
- 12:55Speaker 1: wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect
- 12:59Speaker 1: her husband. Do you see the two key words of
- 13:02Speaker 1: that passage, love and respect, the two essential elements to marriage.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Husbands love your wives. Love your wives. Do everything you
- 13:15Speaker 1: can to let your wife know you're committed to her
- 13:18Speaker 1: for as long as you both shall live. And wives
- 13:22Speaker 1: respect your husbands acknowledge has God given role as protector
- 13:28Speaker 1: and provider. Now this passage prompted doctor Emerson Eggerich to
- 13:33Speaker 1: write a phenomenal book, Love and Respect. His many years
- 13:39Speaker 1: as a marriage therapist led him to state wives are
- 13:42Speaker 1: made to love, They want love, and they expect love.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Husbands are made to be respected. They want respect and
- 13:50Speaker 1: they expect respect. Submission does not imply inferiority. Galatians three
- 13:57Speaker 1: twenty eight affirms that there is no difference between male
- 14:00Speaker 1: and female. Jesus submitted. He submitted to the Father during
- 14:05Speaker 1: his time on the earth, yet he was in no
- 14:07Speaker 1: way inferior to the Father. And also, to be clear,
- 14:10Speaker 1: there's no hint that this passage grants husbands the right
- 14:13Speaker 1: to rule over their wives. Indeed, if a husband's desire
- 14:17Speaker 1: violates God's word, the wife must obey God rather than man.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Nor does his passage give the husband the right to
- 14:27Speaker 1: exercise authority over his wife in an overbearing manner.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Indeed, the man.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Who might do so needs to pay special attention to
- 14:37Speaker 1: what God says to husbands through the pen of the
- 14:40Speaker 1: apostle Paul in the next phrase, husbands, love your wives
- 14:46Speaker 1: and do not be harsh with them. First female readers
- 14:50Speaker 1: would have rejoiced at this teaching as well. Such a
- 14:53Speaker 1: command does not appear in any of the extra biblical
- 14:58Speaker 1: literature of the day. Novel Idea, husbands were instructed to
- 15:03Speaker 1: love their wives. The command was not to erotic love
- 15:08Speaker 1: or friendship love, but to a gope love. Now, a
- 15:12Speaker 1: gop a love seeks to put the welfare of another
- 15:16Speaker 1: person ahead of one's own. A godpe love seeks to serve,
- 15:21Speaker 1: not to be served. A godpe love builds up, it
- 15:24Speaker 1: never tears down. A gode love brings the best out
- 15:28Speaker 1: of another. How do we know all this? How do
- 15:31Speaker 1: we know all this about a godpe love? Because this
- 15:34Speaker 1: is God's love toward us.
- 15:36Speaker 3: The scripture says, for God, so love for He, so
- 15:39Speaker 3: I got paio the world that He gave his only
- 15:42Speaker 3: begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish
- 15:47Speaker 3: but have everlasting life.
- 15:51Speaker 1: You know, husbands, we could hardly be given a higher
- 15:53Speaker 1: call than this. Love your wife like God loves the world. Or,
- 15:59Speaker 1: as Paul wrote to the Ephesians, husbands, love your wives
- 16:03Speaker 1: just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up
- 16:07Speaker 1: for her. Now the home has structure, for sure. The
- 16:12Speaker 1: husband is the head of the household. Scripture makes no apology,
- 16:16Speaker 1: no apology of the fact that Adam was created to
- 16:20Speaker 1: provide leadership and protection in spiritual guidance to Eve. Husbands
- 16:26Speaker 1: are to do this, not in a manner that belittles
- 16:28Speaker 1: the wife. Just the opposite, husbands, Let's love our wives.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Let's love our wives with agape love, an affection that
- 16:37Speaker 1: is akin to the love of Christ for the church. Yes,
- 16:41Speaker 1: he died for the church, He shed his blood for
- 16:44Speaker 1: the church, He paid the ultimate sacrifice for the church.
- 16:49Speaker 1: So are you beginning to see God's design for the family.
- 16:53Speaker 1: A husband who cherishes his wife, a wife who respects
- 16:58Speaker 1: her husband. Don't you think a marriage would like that
- 17:02Speaker 1: would would thrive today? And don't you think that children
- 17:06Speaker 1: would flourish in such a home? Of course they would.
- 17:11Speaker 1: So for the kids, Paul has a word as well.
- 17:14Speaker 1: He says, children, obey your parents and everything for this
- 17:19Speaker 1: pleases the Lord. Now, just as with wives, this teaching
- 17:25Speaker 1: greatly elevated children in a culture where they were elevated.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Under Roman law, the father was permitted to do anything
- 17:33Speaker 1: he wanted.
- 17:33Speaker 2: With his children.
- 17:35Speaker 1: He could sell them, he could turn them into slaves,
- 17:38Speaker 1: he could even take their lives. But here children are
- 17:42Speaker 1: presented as valuable, essential parts of the family. Along with
- 17:48Speaker 1: their parents. They are under the authority of the Lord.
- 17:52Speaker 1: He reminds kids to obey their parents. Again, keep the
- 17:56Speaker 1: big picture in view. Here is a husband who loves God.
- 18:00Speaker 1: He's aware of how Christ loves the church and his goal.
- 18:04Speaker 1: His aim is to replicate that love in the way
- 18:07Speaker 1: he loves his wife. She, in like manner, loves God
- 18:12Speaker 1: and she is aware. She is aware that family is
- 18:15Speaker 1: God's idea, and she chooses to respect her husband. This
- 18:20Speaker 1: relationship is not top down on his part or manipulative
- 18:24Speaker 1: on hers. It's a happy partnership of mutual submission to God. Now,
- 18:30Speaker 1: this folks is a greenhouse in which a child will flourish.
- 18:36Speaker 1: In this context, children are told to obey their parents. Now,
- 18:39Speaker 1: this is a stronger word than submit, It is more absolute.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It actually consists of two words, listen and under Obedience
- 18:49Speaker 1: is a willingness to listen and submit to mom and dad.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Young people, can I just speak on behalf of your
- 18:58Speaker 1: parents for a second. They don't think they know everything,
- 19:02Speaker 1: they know full well they do not. In fact, most
- 19:05Speaker 1: parents live with this nagging sense of insecurity. But son
- 19:10Speaker 1: and daughter of imperfect parents, here's the truth. They know
- 19:14Speaker 1: more than you do. They know more about life than
- 19:18Speaker 1: your friends do, and they have a love for you
- 19:21Speaker 1: that is beyond words. They really do mean you well.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So listen, listen to what they have to say, and dads,
- 19:31Speaker 1: be careful in the way you say it. Paul turns
- 19:33Speaker 1: his attention back to you and me and he says, fathers,
- 19:37Speaker 1: do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And why does he not include moms in this admonition, Well,
- 19:47Speaker 1: because we're the head of the home. Hence we're responsible
- 19:50Speaker 1: for the tone of the home. Other translations of this
- 19:54Speaker 1: scripture translate it like this, do not provoke your children
- 19:58Speaker 1: unless they become discourged, or do not nag your children
- 20:03Speaker 1: if you're too hard to please. They may want to
- 20:05Speaker 1: stop trying. Or this one. Don't come down too hard
- 20:10Speaker 1: on your children or you'll crush their spirits. Now, folks,
- 20:16Speaker 1: discipline is not easy. The cartoon appeared some time ago
- 20:19Speaker 1: that had a picture of a dad talking to his
- 20:21Speaker 1: wife and in the background, his son was down on
- 20:25Speaker 1: his knees praying. The caption had the confused father saying,
- 20:29Speaker 1: how am I supposed to spank him? When he keeps
- 20:32Speaker 1: on saying, Lord God of Israel, have mercy on me.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Discipline is not easy, but it is an essential part
- 20:40Speaker 1: of parenting.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Now.
- 20:41Speaker 1: While God promotes it, he also calls for the mature
- 20:45Speaker 1: application of it, just quickly. Four rules for discipline. Number one, parents,
- 20:51Speaker 1: be careful. Be careful, be quick to interpret misbehavior, but
- 20:56Speaker 1: slow to punishment. Place a child in time out while
- 20:59Speaker 1: you both cool down for a minute. Punishment is never
- 21:03Speaker 1: a license for cruelty. If you are enjoying the administration
- 21:08Speaker 1: of the discipline, you need to stop. Number two, be consistent.
- 21:15Speaker 1: The punishment must fit the act. Seek to discern the
- 21:19Speaker 1: cause of the action, What motivated this misbehavior? You know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: it's one thing to slam a door out of disrespect.
- 21:26Speaker 1: It's another to slam it because you're running to catch
- 21:29Speaker 1: the ice cream truck down the street. Oversights are misdemeanors.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Rebellion is a felony. Number three, be clear, Be clear,
- 21:41Speaker 1: explain what the punishment is and what the punishment was.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Do not assume that the child understands, and don't punish
- 21:49Speaker 1: a child for being bad. The child may have done
- 21:53Speaker 1: a bad thing, but that does not mean he or
- 21:56Speaker 1: she is a bad child. And then, lastly, number four,
- 22:00Speaker 1: be compassionate. One mistake does not a child make, and
- 22:05Speaker 1: one season of waywardness does.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Not a child. Define.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Love keeps no record of wrongs, wrote the Apostle. Now,
- 22:13Speaker 1: it's not easy being a kid to a parent a
- 22:16Speaker 1: parent to a kid, nor is it easy being a
- 22:18Speaker 1: good husband or wife.
- 22:19Speaker 2: But in the end, folks, it's worth it. It's worth it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I learned this with Liz, the pug faced puppy. She
- 22:27Speaker 1: became a fixture in our house. And no boy ever
- 22:30Speaker 1: loved a dog more, no dog ever loved a boy more.
- 22:34Speaker 1: It stuck a Titus ended up being a blessing beyond words.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And I'm praying that someday, when you look back, you'll
