- 1:08waiting for Kirk Ference. We'll talk to Elliot about
- 1:10Hawkeye related topics at 12:45. At 1:00, Matt Snyder before he
- 1:15gets his passport in tow and off he goes to Toronto to cover game
- 1:20one of the world serial to cover all of them.
- 1:22But he'll be Criss crossing couple of countries between LA
- 1:27and TO. But Matt Snyder from
- 1:29CBSSports.com on MLB and then Vinny Iyer covers the NFL for
- 1:34The Sporting News. Here's our final guest here
- 1:36today. So we got a lot of big twelves
- 1:38covered. Hawkeyes are covered, MLB is
- 1:40covered and so is the NFL. Pretty good day.
- 1:43We missed the NBA. What were we thinking?
- 1:45We'll get to it April, get to it in April.
- 1:47Good point. Let me write that down as it
- 1:50gets underway here tonight. So that's what's coming up on
- 1:52our program. Trump, we'll make some picks
- 1:54before we slide out of here. Circa Sports sponsor those at
- 1:57about 1:50 or so and we'll turn things over to off the bench at
- 2:01that time. Lucas and Sean, how are you,
- 2:03Sir? I'm doing great late night.
- 2:05Last night got a little tickle in the throat.
- 2:08You OK? Probably be in the casino too
- 2:10late Sunday, right? Little tickle in the throat, but
- 2:13watching the Seahawks at times feel like they're trying to give
- 2:17the game away with my survivor ticket in tow.
- 2:20I hated that experience so much. That was not fun last night.
- 2:24You know it's supposed to be fun Sunday afternoon, no?
- 2:26It's supposed to be a sweat. Oh, it was a sweat.
- 2:29Sunday afternoon was fun and hopeful that all these teams are
- 2:32going to get kicked out. We're going to go into Monday
- 2:34with that. Last night was not an enjoyable
- 2:37experience because the Seahawks better.
- 2:39The Seahawks were the better side.
- 2:41I had the right, yet you're looking.
- 2:43What are they doing? What is?
- 2:44Throwing the ball. What?
- 2:45What's Darnold doing? What is happening here?
- 2:48Here they come. All of a sudden it's within a
- 2:50score. It get I It was not a fun
- 2:52experience until the final whistle blew and I was getting
- 2:55texts and I was getting tweets and I was getting people
- 2:57messaging me all night long. But we move on.
- 3:00Yeah, good. I mean, it's it's fantastic.
- 3:02You're in uncharted waters for at least the two of us.
- 3:05Yes, you are on the final week of the month of October.
- 3:09Do you know what that means? You're getting pretty close, but
- 3:12there's been a lot of folks survive at this point.
- 3:14I haven't seen the numbers, but I don't think too many fell by
- 3:17the wayside this week. And off you go the next week.
- 3:20And I hope you've got your plans.
- 3:21You said the Patriots, right? Is your target this week?
- 3:24That was what I was looking at until that performance out of
- 3:26Cleveland last week. I mean, that's why it didn't use
- 3:29New England this week because I was kind of peeking ahead at
- 3:31that one. Still, they're north of a
- 3:33touchdown. Drake Mace play incredibly well.
- 3:35Yep, He banged his head on the turf.
- 3:37I was what it was on red zone when he did that didn't came
- 3:40back into the game and and he's playing at a high level against
- 3:42his Cleveland def. I I think that's where I'm going
- 3:45to end up because got a better game, you got a better one.
- 3:47I've got a better game that I think, and I don't know if
- 3:50you've used this team or not, but I think they're an absolute
- 3:52cinch on Sunday. OK, it's Atlanta.
- 3:54Already used them. Darn it, already used them.
- 3:57Yeah, that's the tricky part about this.
- 3:59It's not just picking one. No, you have to.
- 4:00Use them. Once you use them, they're done
- 4:02for the well, then you're I'm just stuck with the Patriots.
- 4:04There aren't a lot of options of teams that I have available.
- 4:07Like I don't have the Colts, so I can't use them against the
- 4:09Titans this week. The Chiefs, I'm holding them.
- 4:14I'm not going to use them this week.
- 4:17Yes, Jake, it's about what? Are you going to use them?
- 4:20Neither Thanksgiving or Christmas.
- 4:21There's two options. They play Denver on Christmas.
- 4:23Who do they play on Thanksgiving?
- 4:25On Thanksgiving, they face the Cowboys.
- 4:29Cowboys offense is legit. It is.
- 4:32But in a. I feel I feel better about the
- 4:34chiefs of. Course would feel better, Yeah,
- 4:36Now when we get to that's in Caboville.
- 4:38Yes. Now I will have, hopefully the
- 4:40Lions still in my pocket. They'll host in a revenge game.
- 4:43The Packers. Why?
- 4:45They look good last night and. I'll still have the Eagles
- 4:47potentially at. Home against your bears on on
- 4:50Black Friday and. Then we get to Christmas as you
- 4:52mentioned. Yes, it is Denver.
- 4:54But Washington's got an easy Well, not maybe not, maybe not
- 4:57anymore. It's against the Cowboys, Yeah.
- 4:59And this Washington team. No, I was selling before the
- 5:02year. The Lions, well, if I use them
- 5:04on Thanksgiving, they go to Minnesota.
- 5:06I mean, could it come down to, I'm in Christmas, I got to use
- 5:08those stinking Vikings? Good God, it could.
- 5:11After all, all the words that we use throughout the course of the
- 5:15year and it gets down to it and there's only three games that
- 5:17you can use that week and it gets down to it after we yelled
- 5:20at each other back and forth about JJ McCarthy.
- 5:22And you got to root for. Him and I got.
- 5:23Suddenly it would be so poetic. I have hundreds of thousands, if
- 5:27not millions of dollars on the line on JJ Flippin McCarthy.
- 5:30Oh, would that be poetic that you got to wear, you got to get
- 5:34some gear. No, I we got plenty of it in the
- 5:35house. I know you do.
- 5:38So fun night last night of of football, the Lions looked
- 5:40really good. I thought, you know, I don't
- 5:43know what this means about this. What what happened 2 weeks ago?
- 5:46Was Kansas City that much better?
- 5:47They toyed with the Lions. We'll see.
- 5:51I want I want to and I know where you're going to go because
- 5:52you don't like Sam Darnold. I think I'm watching the team
- 5:55that's every bit alive to win a Super Bowl in in the Seattle
- 5:58Seahawks defense is without a doubt legit.
- 6:02They can run the football if you got the best punter in the game.
- 6:04They've got really good receiver and Smith, the Jigba.
- 6:07They've got a good tight end. I don't know what the deficiency
- 6:10is on that team. Same Darnold other than maybe
- 6:13the quarterback. But you know what?
- 6:15We've seen bad quarterbacks get to the promised land before, and
- 6:19he was really good through weeks one through 6, 16 last year and
- 6:21then it just all fell apart. I think the Seahawks are a
- 6:25threat in the NFCI really do. I think it's Philadelphia.
- 6:30I think it's Detroit. I think it's Detroit Gap.
- 6:34How do you have Philadelphia up there?
- 6:36I watched him play the Vikings. I did too this week.
- 6:38You were. Yeah, I was impressed.
- 6:40I thought. I thought.
- 6:41I thought it was a complete win. Well, maybe they're still, they
- 6:46still can't run the ball. No, but I was, I was impressed.
- 6:49The A.J. Brown research he.
- 6:51Was really good. That was impressive what he did
- 6:53put in the game away on on that throw up the left sideline.
- 6:56Hertz was terrific, Devante Smith was terrific in that
- 6:59football game. They got a good tight end and
- 7:02Goddard. Offensive line is still OK.
- 7:04Defensive line is really good. When Carter plays, kickers kind
- 7:08of get long in the tooth. And Elliot missed, another one
- 7:10missed. Another one he did.
- 7:12But that made it A2 score game. At the time it was something
- 7:14weird. But yeah, it was an important
- 7:15kick, and it wasn't a real long one either.
- 7:17No. And Jake Elliott whiffed.
- 7:20So we'll see. I think.
- 7:21I think they're in the hunt, though.
- 7:22I think maybe Atlanta's alive. I mean, a tear below Tampa Bay,
- 7:26their injuries, they're catching up to him again.
- 7:29I, I really like that team. Going into last night, I thought
- 7:31Detroit would win, but Tampa was on my list.
- 7:34I don't know. I can make a case for four or
- 7:37five of them, and I think the Seahawks are.
- 7:38I have to be in every one of my conversations at.
- 7:41Least I do 49ers cross. You know what?
- 7:44They're better than I thought. And the NFC West is good.
- 7:47We didn't mention the Rams. Did the 49ers found the
- 7:51quarterback? Is Brock Pretty getting his job
- 7:53back? Well.
- 7:56Yes, I think he is too. Yes, I think he is.
- 7:58But I don't think that they're going to be as hesitant if if
- 8:01he's struggling a little bit to pull the trigger.
- 8:03I mean, this is how many NFL prognosticators were begging
- 8:08Lynch and Shanahan. This is the guy you need to take
- 8:12out of Alabama. Take him.
- 8:14Take Mac Jones. He's the guy.
- 8:16No, we know. We know more than you.
- 8:18We're taking Trey Lance. And both of them.
- 8:22In the beginning, right? Because Mac Jones was in the
- 8:24wrong system. Mac Jones was for Belichick.
- 8:26And that first year was actually pretty decent for him for Mac.
- 8:29I don't recall yeah, I just remember screaming on the
- 8:31sidelines something about throw the damn ball coming off the
- 8:36field and was was PO D but anyways, so good night of
- 8:39football last night, good night of baseball.
- 8:41Last night I, I was texting you last night, you know, and then
- 8:45after I texted you after the three run over, which by the
- 8:47way, when Springer hits that and he's just kind of jogging and
- 8:50looking at it and then the celebration.
- 8:53Did you think off the bat that was going to be a lot further
- 8:55out than it turned out to? Be I'm with you, I thought he
- 8:57absolutely nailed it and it was like 3 rows back.
- 9:00It wasn't. It didn't hit the back of the
- 9:02wall. No, no.
- 9:03But yeah, no, it was. It didn't clear, but you know
- 9:05what cleared the wall? It did cleared the wall and
- 9:07cleared those guys certainly know.
- 9:08But boy, after I saw that I said hey, I thought it was going to
- 9:11be further. And what if that thing didn't
- 9:14have quite the oh boy with the well I love.
- 9:16The fact that he moved the runners over, they moved the
- 9:19runners also, They're going to get one, they're going to get a
- 9:20little bit closer. And the guy that, I mean, I've
- 9:23been killing Hoffman all year long, I mean, 3 strikeouts in,
- 9:27the ninth in and, you know, can't ask for much more than
- 9:29that, however. He gets that last pitch.
- 9:30He's going to linger with him all offseason.
- 9:33No, it is for sure. It is for sure.
- 9:35So good stuff. We get LA and Toronto.
- 9:38LA is going to be an overwhelming favorite of as they
- 9:41should be. It seems like it it's it's
- 9:45inevitable. And I'm a Blue Jays fan.
- 9:47I'm just not saying this to, you know, to make the wound any less
- 9:51painful that but that I see coming.
- 9:53I hope it's a great series, obviously for for sports fans
- 9:56out there. LA, I mean, how do you stop?
- 10:01How do you stop these these these these big three at the top
- 10:05of the rotation, right? Good luck.
- 10:09They're a different tier. They're a different tier.
- 10:12And we can complain about salary cap and the way that they spend
- 10:16and what they do and pushing salaries back and all the
- 10:19things, but the the just absolute depth of talent that
- 10:23they have. It is.
- 10:25It's incredible. And it seems, yes, there were
- 10:28long stretches this year where they looked below average.
- 10:31They were below. Average.
- 10:33But that's baseball. Too.
- 10:34I know it's a long season, Trent.
- 10:35You say it all the time. It's a long season.
- 10:38And you are Mr. Overreaction. I mean what do we game to game?
- 10:41You are about as overreaction area as anybody.
- 10:44Yes, but it's not just a baseball.
- 10:47Yeah, it's every. School yes all Rover react to a
- 10:49lot of stuff like that I I don't know how you're going to beat
- 10:52the big three right. Yamamoto was unbelievable.
- 10:54Obviously, Snell looks like us. You know, the Cy Young Award
- 10:59winner that he is. Ohtani.
- 11:01Oh, by the way, you're forced Tyler Glass now.
- 11:03Yes. I mean, my God.
- 11:06Good luck. You have told us that you are in
- 11:09great shape if the Dodgers win the World Series.
- 11:11Yes. You're going to.
- 11:13You're going to pay for your. I'll be able to bet futures for
- 11:15the next three years and not have to worry about a thing.
- 11:17You're going to be in great shape.
- 11:19Do you have anything at all on the Blue Jays?
- 11:21I The only thing I did preseason on the Blue Jays was I thought
- 11:24over 76 1/2 was a lock, and I said it a million times in
- 11:27March. I jumped on with that.
- 11:29And I cashed a number of tickets with that.
- 11:31I do not have any World Series until the World Series start,
- 11:34until the playoffs started. OK.
- 11:35And I opened my Circa app because it was brand new and I
- 11:37wanted to play around with it. Mm Hmm.
- 11:39And I bet Toronto over the Phillies.
- 11:42I bet Toronto over the Dodgers pretty significantly and and
- 11:47the, and the Brewers and the Brewers.
- 11:48So obviously I'm alive and I hope I throw away.
- 11:51I hope I RIP up all of my Dodger tickets.
- 11:54So right now it's Circa Dodgers to win the series -235 Blue Jays
- 11:59are two to one. Yeah.
- 12:01Now I also have a hedging opportunity.
- 12:03The story I told from the summer when I won all those free bets
- 12:06and I have a Dodgers one in there.
- 12:08Jay, we'll get to you in just a second.
- 12:09Hang in there. Do I look at hedging or just let
- 12:13it ride? It was a it was a free bet.
- 12:14And what's the price? It pays $1400.
- 12:18It's like plus 285 to win the World Series.
- 12:20It was a $500 free bet that I won miraculously on a comeback
- 12:256th inning. You were part of that big group
- 12:28that you shared the DraftKings pot of gold.
- 12:31Like $1,000,000 and that was one of the future bets that I put in
- 12:35there. Do I do that?
- 12:37Do I? Even knowing that there's that
- 12:39much money on the end, if the Dodgers win, even just put 100
- 12:42bucks on the Blue Jays, you know you're gonna make something out
- 12:45of it. I mean, can you, can you bet how
- 12:48many games it'll go? That might be your play.
- 12:52Do do you really think that the Jays have a path?
- 12:54I don't and I I wish I was. I wish I could be optimistic.
- 12:58The fact that there's really cool, really cool.
- 13:01I remember in 1992 by myself in my apartment in Denver, watching
- 13:05a 12 inch black our our colored TV because I was dead broke.
- 13:10Denver's a little more expensive than and I didn't realize that
- 13:13when I moved, but just I mean by myself watching them finally win
- 13:18a World Series and they did it the next year.
- 13:20So, and it was really cool at the time because as a fan, that
- 13:23was my first championship. Denver hadn't won this Super
- 13:26Bowl yet. Oh, that's right, right.
- 13:27The Jets were the freaking Jets. There's no championship.
- 13:31There's no championships there and, and that was a really cool
- 13:34moment as far as feeling that you get right.
- 13:36And I've subsequently had it three other times with my
- 13:38Broncos. But anyways, we'll see.
- 13:40I hope it's a good series. I don't believe it will be.
- 13:43It's just one dude after another.
- 13:45Matt Snyder maybe can help us out with some facts.
- 13:47He'll join us. Absolutely.
- 13:48All right, let's get Jay. Jay joins us.
- 13:50He wants to talk about Survivor. Are you alive, Jay?
- 13:56Well, so no, I actually do not sports gamble.
- 14:00OK. More than a.
- 14:01Decade ago, downtown with bookies here in Des Moines, I
- 14:04lost over a couple grand one day on college football.
- 14:07You had enough. Good for you.
- 14:09That was it. But real quick for before
- 14:12Survivor, I did purchase a couple tickets for me and my
- 14:15buddy to go to the November 22nd Iowa Michigan State game.
- 14:19I did that right after the Penn State game.
- 14:22What's the chances in your guys's opinion that that's going
- 14:24to be a meaningful right game? Maybe not CFP, but where would
- 14:30you think that that game would rank and meaning that now?
- 14:33Did they beat Oregon? Probably not.
- 14:37I mean, at minimum, they got to win one of the two against
- 14:40Oregon or USC, and I still think the USC game is more difficult
- 14:44because it's on the road. Yeah.
- 14:44And it's on the West Coast. It's on the West Coast.
- 14:47I mean, Oregon coming here for whatever that kickoff is going
- 14:49to be in cold weather and slowing down.
- 14:51I. Hope it's at night well.
- 14:53I I don't think it can be. I think I was played their
- 14:55allotment. Oh, have they?
- 14:57Yes. Son of a guy.
- 14:57That thing's going to be big. Noon, 9:00 AM.
- 14:59Body clock game for the dogs. The way I would played against
- 15:02Indiana leads me. I believe there's.
- 15:03A shot, yes, I agree. There's a shot now when it comes
- 15:07to Survivor, once again, not a gambler.
- 15:09Let us talk about a lot. My biggest question is kind of
- 15:12how it works, but do you have to bet on per week A-Team to win or
- 15:17can you bet on a team to lose? No, you have to bet them to.
- 15:20Win. They have to win and a tie is a
- 15:22loss. So you don't bet every week,
- 15:24Jade. So the before the season starts,
- 15:26the Circus Survivor, it's $1000 entry fee.
- 15:30Plus you've got to team up with a proxy in Las Vegas because you
- 15:34can't. You have to make the wager.
- 15:37You have to make your play in the state of Nevada every week.
- 15:40So it's $1000 buy in and there were 18,455 I think people,
- 15:46there's $18,400,000 in the pool to start and you could only use
- 15:51a team once and the and you cannot use them again.
- 15:55So you've got to kind of map that out.
- 15:57And when it comes to Circa, it's a 20 week season because
- 16:01Thanksgiving, Black Friday is its own week in addition to the
- 16:04games on Sunday and then the three great games on Christmas
- 16:08Day, they're their own week in addition to the following
- 16:11Sunday, so. 20 week contest. It's a 20 week contest, but it
- 16:15but just the it's kind of like buy the lottery ticket, right?
- 16:18You know, you see, you put it in the back of your pocket.
- 16:20What I could do with the money when I win and you have more,
- 16:23you think anyways that you're empowered because hell, I know
- 16:26football. The hell with the ping pong
- 16:28numbers numbers coming out. I can pick one game a week.
- 16:31Point spread doesn't it's incredibly difficult.
- 16:34It's incredibly difficult. Team over the season.
- 16:37What's that? So you you can only use one
- 16:40team. No, no, no, no.
- 16:41You can only use the team. Once a week, yeah, you have to
- 16:44find another team for the following.
- 16:46So that's why last week I didn't want to use the Chiefs, even
- 16:48though they're a huge favorite, because once he used the Chiefs,
- 16:50you can't use them the rest of the way, OK?
- 16:53Yep, all. Right.
- 16:54Well, thank you for the information, gentlemen, and you
- 16:56guys have a great afternoon. Yeah, you do the same, Jay.
- 16:58Appreciate that. Here's Jeff.
- 17:00Jeff, welcome to the program. I knew the NBA season would
- 17:03smoke. His ears.
- 17:04Yeah. His ears perked up.
- 17:05Well, how are you? Doing well.
- 17:08First, I just want to give a shout out to this quarterback
- 17:10that number one has the best QBR in the NFL.
- 17:14In the last month he has thrown 0 Ints with 13 touchdowns.
- 17:19This guy has carried this offense to possibly the best
- 17:23offense in the NFL. Thirdly, turning away, you know,
- 17:27their best defensive asset. I think you can probably get
- 17:30where I'm going. They're trying to get Max
- 17:32Crosby. Did you see that?
- 17:34I did. Drop pass, actually 4 drop
- 17:37passes against the Eagles, they win that game.
- 17:41You, you know, you move on to tying Green Bay.
- 17:45This Dallas Cowboy team honestly could have one loss at this
- 17:48moment. The Bears beat them in Chicago.
- 17:50I don't want to go far off the tooth here, but Dak Prescott to
- 17:54me is the leading MVP candidate right now on October 21st.
- 18:00I my vote would be for Dak Prescott.
- 18:01But let's move to the NBA. It starts tonight, you know, can
- 18:05I like to kind of give you a couple of teams here.
- 18:08This this first team was 10th in the East last year, kind of
- 18:11right on the cusp. It's the Orlando Magic, you
- 18:16know, the players of Paulo and Wagner and Thugs.
- 18:21They got Desmond Bain, this team.
- 18:24I honestly think not. They can get to the Eastern
- 18:28Conference Finals. I think they can go to the
- 18:29Finals. But give me give me the 50 1/2
- 18:33over under the win. I love that play.
- 18:36That is my favorite play of the NBA is the Orlando Magic.
- 18:40Over 50 1/2 win the MVP slash NBA Finals.
- 18:45We talk about this every year. There's only about four or five
- 18:48teams, but we think this is the year not just for the Denver
- 18:55Nuggets, but now we're talking about we're getting into this
- 18:58rare air of one of the all time greats again, winning the MVP
- 19:04Yokich, but bringing the team back.
- 19:07Jamal Murray was hurt. They added some pieces around
- 19:10them to be better. This is the team where I think
- 19:14it's destiny, not just for like I said, Joker, but there's a lot
- 19:18of players that I think they're going to take that step and you
- 19:21got OK CI get that. That should be a great.
- 19:24Western Top. Stuff.
- 19:27Another one real quick. I like the Detroit Pistons.
- 19:31Why I like the Detroit Pistons? They're all young players and
- 19:35they fight hard in the regular season.
- 19:37You want to find these teams that may not win the
- 19:40championship, they may lose in the first round, but you want
- 19:43you. Want to as they did last year.
- 19:45Exactly what the next, which was a great series by the way, but
- 19:50you want to find these young teams, maybe the Atlanta Hawks,
- 19:53maybe the Portland Trail Blazers, where you get these
- 19:56teams that are right on the cusp of making the playoffs last year
- 20:00that take that step moving forward for this year.
- 20:03You guys have a good day. Thank you Jeff.
- 20:05We have to move forward. Appreciate that.
- 20:07I thought that everything I read the nick of the the the East is
- 20:10a two team race, Cavs and Knicks.
- 20:13Cavs and Knicks? I think so.
- 20:15I mean. I like the magic.
- 20:18I do too. I do too.
- 20:19I had a free play that I put on them to win the in season
- 20:22tournament. You keep getting.
- 20:23These free plays, dude. You get a lot of losses, too.
- 20:27You get a lot of free plays. We have a keyword for you.
- 20:30Head to kxno.com. The keyword this hour is credit.
- 20:32Your chance to win $1000 in this nationwidecontestcredit@kxno.com.
- 20:38Your chance to win a grand. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 20:41Tuesday. Glad you're with us.
- 20:42It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network all right 1230 welcome
- 20:47back Millerine Condon the Iowa sports radio network flag
- 20:50shipped on a Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO to Kansas
- 20:55City. We go Matt Poston's is their
- 20:57heartland college sports covers basketball and football for that
- 21:01Big 12 outlet and he's at the women's media day today min
- 21:05tomorrow and he joins us Hello Matt Poston.
- 21:07It's good to talk to you, appreciate the relationship and
- 21:10having you on here again. So your mark, has he spoken yet?
- 21:14If So, what did you glean from in the commish?
- 21:17Is he met with the media? He is actually in the midst of
- 21:21speaking right now. He's taking questions from the
- 21:23media. Obviously a lot of prepared
- 21:25remarks, talked a lot about different issues.
- 21:30One thing he did, I think this would be the most important
- 21:32note, at least for general fans out there, they haven't had
- 21:37further conversations about the College Football Playoff in
- 21:39terms of expansion at this point.
- 21:41So they they haven't had any recent.
- 21:42So right now, you know, it's still a 12 team playoff.
- 21:45And I think Rick Clark recently said that if they don't have
- 21:48anything, you know, done by early December that they're
- 21:51going to stick with a 12 team for 2026.
- 21:53So, you know, hearing that from Miramar today that they haven't
- 21:57really had these substantive conversations means they're that
- 22:00they want to expand. They're on the clock and they
- 22:01got to get it done in a couple of months.
- 22:03Is expansion a good thing for the Big 12 or is the number 12
- 22:07better for them? We know that at least in the
- 22:09past they said no to 16 with the 2 automatic bids that come along
- 22:12with it. What is a better thing for Big
- 22:1512 football as we know it, 12 or an expansion to 16 kind of,
- 22:18regardless of how they figure out those bids?
- 22:21Well, I think that's the trick right there.
- 22:23You know, if it's 16, obviously that would be better for the Big
- 22:2612, as long as they're not putting, you know, a fixed
- 22:30number of bids toward each conference.
- 22:32I mean, it seems like every arrangement that we've seen out
- 22:35there from, especially from the Big 10 has been, yeah, we'll
- 22:38expand to 16, but we want 4 bids.
- 22:40Like that's not how this is supposed to work.
- 22:42That's not how any supporters support is supposed to work.
- 22:45You got to earn your way in. And your remarks are very clear
- 22:47over the last few months. He wants the system where
- 22:49everybody has to earn their way again.
- 22:51So I think if you were to ask him, yeah, between 12 and 16,
- 22:55but if it's sixteen, you have to sacrifice automatic bids to
- 22:59other conferences. I think he'd rather stick A12,
- 23:01and personally, I'd rather stick a 12.
- 23:03At least that way, yes, your conference champions get in as
- 23:06they should. And then the other eight, it's
- 23:09really up to the committee. And you got to kind of hope the
- 23:11committee gets it right most of the time.
- 23:13Women's media day today. We'll get to the minute in just
- 23:16a second, as they will. Their day is tomorrow in the Big
- 23:1912. When it comes to Iowa State
- 23:21family, she's got a sneaky good team this year.
- 23:22I think maybe better, maybe not sneaky.
- 23:24Maybe they're not going to surprise anybody.
- 23:27Obviously Audie Crooks is. I don't know if she's the poster
- 23:30child for this team, but she's certainly a heck of a player.
- 23:33And she's not alone when it comes to the Big 12 women.
- 23:36How do you see this conference as far as kind of the power at
- 23:38the top? Does Iowa State belong there?
- 23:41Yeah, I think they do. I mean, when you think about
- 23:43Audie and Addie, he was going to play together now for two years
- 23:47and Jada Williams is going to be a big differentiator for them.
- 23:50You know, she comes in from Arizona.
- 23:52She's going to have that ability to handle the basketball like
- 23:54Emily did last year. But really, you know,
- 23:56considering Addie Brown handled the ball so much during the time
- 24:01Emily was away a couple of years ago, you've got 2 good ball
- 24:03handlers on the floor. You got one of the best posts in
- 24:05the conference. Sidney Harris is back and I
- 24:08think she's a really underrated player across the country.
- 24:11Her ability to shoot the three and defend.
- 24:13I love their starting lap, the starting lineup that I have
- 24:16projected for them, which will be out later today at Heartland
- 24:18College Sports. I love what they have from the
- 24:21starting standpoint. I think the question for them
- 24:22is, are they going to have the depth to hang with teams like
- 24:26TCU and Baylor and Oklahoma State?
- 24:29You know, those teams that, you know, West Virginia, those teams
- 24:32that got to the semifinals with Big 12 Tournament last year,
- 24:35those teams have a lot of depth coming back.
- 24:37They've got a lot of links coming back.
- 24:39They can be really competitive with Iowa State.
- 24:41See, that's the difference between whether or not Iowa
- 24:43State's a top four team in the conference or say a top six or
- 24:47seven team in the conference. But I absolutely think they have
- 24:49the talent and the ability. To to be a player in this race.
- 24:53Yuzon, Sharp, Duggler, all back for Houston.
- 24:58They add even more to it. Of course, he got a coach and
- 25:01Kelvin Sampson. That's incredible.
- 25:03Houston I, I saw Purdue what pre season #1 in the AP poll.
- 25:07Houston, though, doesn't feel like there's a big gap between
- 25:10them and everybody else. Because it certainly does to me
- 25:12in all of college basketball. Well, yeah, I mean when you
- 25:15think about what they have coming back, but also.
- 25:19They they didn't. Really have to tap into the poor
- 25:21at all. They brought in one kid from Sam
- 25:23Houston who's got a lot of length and can give them the
- 25:25depth behind Joseph Tuckler. But generally speaking, Kelvin's
- 25:29been able to keep his last two recruiting classes together.
- 25:32And a lot of those guys are going to, you know, pick up
- 25:34steam this year, Ramon. Walker.
- 25:37Mercy Miller, guys like that, They've got a terrific freshman
- 25:40class. They got two kids that I think
- 25:41can play right away for them. And the beauty of what Kelvin's
- 25:45able to do with his system is he can integrate a lot of different
- 25:48guys into the system quickly. They buy into what he wants to
- 25:51do from day one, which is play really tough defense and build
- 25:54their offense off of that. And then when you consider you
- 25:56got maybe the best bat court in the conference and who's on and
- 26:01sharp, those two guys alone can keep them in any ball game.
- 26:05So yeah, I think there is AII. If you if I had a vote, I would
- 26:09have had the number one in the 80.
- 26:10Poll. But you know, there's, I don't
- 26:14want to say there's a huge gap between them and say Texas Tech
- 26:17and Iowa State and those are the other schools, but there's a
- 26:20gap. And those get that gap can be
- 26:22bridged by those teams. But coming into the season, I
- 26:24think they're clearly the best team in the conference on paper.
- 26:27What about BYU? They're.
- 26:32They, they had, they had the potential, I think to be the
- 26:35most exciting team in the conference.
- 26:36I mean, you, you're bringing back Richie Saunders, you got AJ
- 26:39Debansta, who is the number one recruit in the country, a guy
- 26:42who I think can be one of those guys like a, a Cooper flag type
- 26:47who can come and play immediately make an impact, not
- 26:50just on that program. And nationally, they're right
- 26:53there in that conversation with Iowa State and with the other
- 26:56teams that you, you know, you would expect to be competitive
- 26:59with Houston. But you know, I just feel like
- 27:03Houston with their ability to play defense, with their ability
- 27:06to rebound and the depth that they have, I think that that's
- 27:09what makes them a little bit different than everybody else.
- 27:12Plus, you have a team for the last two years which has won the
- 27:16regular season championship, has won one Big 12 tournament
- 27:20championship and been to the final.
- 27:21So they're they don't get scared in big moments.
- 27:24They don't shy away from big moments.
- 27:25And that that's a little bit of the differentiator between them
- 27:28and everybody else in the league as well.
- 27:29Did the bats really get 5 million?
- 27:32I have no idea, but if he did, bully for him.
- 27:36It'll be better than his first year of his rookie contract.
- 27:40What a world, what a world. Hey, in the on the men's side,
- 27:43is there a team maybe that's kind of in the middle that you
- 27:46like as a dark horse not to win the conference?
- 27:48I I don't think anybody out of that group can beat a Houston to
- 27:51BYU, Arizona, anything like that.
- 27:52But. Texas Tech's not in that hunt.
- 27:54Oh yeah, they're, they're in there too in Kansas.
- 27:55I'm talking about that next year.
- 27:57The Cincinnati's, the Oklahoma State's, the West Virginia's TCS
- 28:01out of that. But you know, next here a team
- 28:03is there a team that you maybe like a little bit more than some
- 28:05of the other prognosticators out there?
- 28:11You know, I like, I like what Jamie Dixon did at TCU.
- 28:16I don't know if they're necessarily A-Team that's going
- 28:18to be feel like a, an upset king in this conference, but he has
- 28:23enough continuity coming back. You know, guys like David Punch
- 28:26who understand his system. And then he brought in enough
- 28:29transfer portal guys that I think are really going to help
- 28:33help them get to the next level in terms of just, you know,
- 28:35maybe going from being like a, you know, 10th place team to
- 28:38being a 7th place team in the conference.
- 28:40And then, you know, Kansas State's gotten a lot of love and
- 28:43obviously JJ Haggerty has a lot to do with that.
- 28:45He's going to be a really good player for them this year.
- 28:47He's going to be one of the best players in the conference.
- 28:50But again, there's a lot of turn over there at Kansas State.
- 28:53Jerome Tang has had a little trouble the last couple of years
- 28:56in terms of building chemistry on the floor and getting what he
- 28:59wants out of these guys. Having a guy like Haggerty is
- 29:01going to help him a great deal because I guess the focal point
- 29:04offensively, But at the same time, defenses are going to
- 29:06focus on him and they're going to need a couple of guys to step
- 29:10up. And I, I don't know if he has
- 29:12those guys yet. That's the thing, you know,
- 29:14right now it's October, you see everybody on paper and you, you
- 29:18see the experience of some of these teams.
- 29:20But you see the, you don't see the, the, the people, You don't
- 29:23see the players that are potentially going to help these
- 29:25teams in January as they build chemistry and as players develop
- 29:28over the first couple of months. Of the season.
- 29:30Kansas State and TC are two teams to me that yeah, they may
- 29:33not look great on paper like in mid to late December, but maybe
- 29:37mid to late January, maybe they're making some noise you
- 29:40didn't expect. We've got like 2 minutes left
- 29:42and I got to get two more questions.
- 29:44I got to ask you about Iowa State, a top five team in
- 29:47basketball, and then I want you to switch to football if you
- 29:50would. I do not buy BYU, but there they
- 29:53are, unbeaten. I did not think they'd beat
- 29:55Utah. They killed him.
- 29:56I didn't kill him, but they beat him.
- 29:57They beat him handily. I was shocked that Texas Tech
- 30:00went down. So how do you see the top of
- 30:02football and where do you have Iowa State as far as men's
- 30:05basketball? Well, I, you know, I was
- 30:08actually talking to Kirby Hoka just a little while ago, the
- 30:11athletic director of Texas Tech. I did not ask him a tortilla
- 30:13question. That's been done to death.
- 30:16But we were talking about the football race and you know, he,
- 30:18you know, obviously they took that loss to Arizona State, but
- 30:21that's not a bad loss for them because Arizona State's a good
- 30:23team. I've been writing about this for
- 30:25the last couple of weeks. Based on what happened last
- 30:27year. If you have 0 losses or one loss
- 30:30in conference, you still very much control your own destiny.
- 30:33If you have two or more losses, then you're really dependent
- 30:36upon other people to find a way in.
- 30:38So Iowa State at this point with two conference losses, they're
- 30:41dependent on A, winning out from here.
- 30:44They they can't lose another game and B, they're going to
- 30:46need some help because some of their tiebreakers are really
- 30:48bad, like the tiebreaker to Cincinnati.
- 30:50That's really bad to lose to a team like that on the road.
- 30:53That doesn't help them from that standpoint.
- 30:55They need Cincinnati basically to lose 3 games for them to have
- 30:58a chance in a tiebreaker situation against them.
- 31:00So, you know, that's where I see Iowa State right now.
- 31:03They've got to win out. If they lose one more game, then
- 31:06any realistic chance of making the Big 12 championship game
- 31:08done. I think, you know, I worry about
- 31:11the health of their team overall.
- 31:13They've lost some guys that were really key for them.
- 31:15I think that's going to make things difficult for them down
- 31:17the stretch. As for the basketball team, I
- 31:19was looking at that roster the other night.
- 31:21I really like that roster. I love what TJS put together.
- 31:24He's got just enough experience in scoring from last year to
- 31:27give them continuity. He's got really good guys coming
- 31:30in from the transfer portal. I think he has more depth, more
- 31:33scoring depth inside than he's had in the last few years.
- 31:36I think that's a big differentiator for them and I
- 31:38think it's going to make them highly competitive in the
- 31:40conference and and quite frankly highly competitive nationally.
- 31:43Matt Poston's Heartland College Sports, he's in Kansas City for
- 31:46women's media day. He'll have updates at Heartland
- 31:49College Sports both today and tomorrow.
- 31:51Matt, hopefully we'll have more time to recap it with you next
- 31:54week if your schedule allows and do some football as well.
- 31:56Thanks for popping on. Sorry to take you away from the
- 31:59press conference. Thanks Matt Poston's appreciate
- 32:01it. Thanks guys.
- 32:03Appreciate. It good to talk to you Matt
- 32:04Poston's heartland college sports Elliot Clef next on the
- 32:08Hawkeyes as they meet the media today it's the Iowa sports radio
- 32:11network. Hi Millory Condon, welcome back
- 32:15Iowa Sports Radio Network, Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3
- 32:19KXNO and 1460 on the AM dial. Don't want to forget about that?
- 32:23No. Hell no.
- 32:25I started here. Let's get to Elliot Clef,
- 32:28hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7 Sports.
- 32:32Hello, Elliot. Thank you as always for doing
- 32:34this. Who did you meet with here
- 32:36earlier today? And a take away or two.
- 32:40I forgot to look at the media availability.
- 32:42Did was Gronowski available today?
- 32:45He was, Yep, spoke with him, spoke with Xavier Wampa and then
- 32:49Kayden Wegen as well. Oh, pretty good trio.
- 32:51Good trio. Well, let's start with the
- 32:53quarterback and obviously it was really good to see.
- 32:58I think Hawkeye fans needed that after the last couple of years.
- 33:02Is still the the passing ability not quite where he wants it to
- 33:06be. I'm sure the success, I guess
- 33:08with the passing, the football. But boy, oh boy, it was good to
- 33:11see him using his legs. How did he come out of the game?
- 33:15Yeah, regarding the passing game, I think everybody's on the
- 33:19same page that it's not where it needs to be.
- 33:22But again, I don't know if you saw my my tweet either, you
- 33:24guys, but Mark mentioned it today too.
- 33:26He finished nine of 10 to finish the game, 9 of 10 for 56 yards,
- 33:31only two passes in the second-half, which according to
- 33:35the guys that we talked to and, and I mean, everybody could see
- 33:37it with their eyes, the run game working pretty damn well in the
- 33:40second-half. So, so really no need to go
- 33:42through the air at that point. But Mark seems like he's
- 33:47continuing to reject, you know, on a good trajectory going
- 33:49forward health wise. I know you guys asked, it was
- 33:52either last week or a couple weeks ago about where he's at
- 33:55his health and if there's a possibility he's going to be
- 33:57back at 100%. I did ask him that question
- 34:00today and he said he's hoping he's back at 100% by the Oregon
- 34:04game on November 8th. He didn't say the Oregon game,
- 34:06but that that's where things are at.
- 34:08Hoping that that bye week helps them continue to to rehab and
- 34:13and get back at 100%. He said he has been moving
- 34:15forward. He did say as well that he felt
- 34:18like initially when the injury was happening, he wasn't able to
- 34:20follow through quite as well on all of his Bros.
- 34:24But now it's just about to be being on the same page with all
- 34:27the all the receivers and such in the passing game and maybe
- 34:30getting a little bit more comfortable early on.
- 34:32And that goes for them as well. So a couple different things
- 34:35from Mark there and hoping that he's healthy and then just
- 34:38continuing to get on the same pages as receivers through the
- 34:40air. Xavier Wampa maybe had his best
- 34:42game at a Hawkeye uniform. Not only that, he was doing it
- 34:45with blood coming out of his ear.
- 34:47What stitches that got ripped off during the course of the
- 34:49game? I saw the video that you had up
- 34:51there LA that that doesn't look pretty on the year of Wampa.
- 34:55No, no, He said he lost count on how many stitches that they put
- 34:58in there after the game, too. So yeah, they're just in there
- 35:01during the game trying to put padding on, extra padding on
- 35:03there to stop the bleeding. And I guess they're going to
- 35:05change his helmet to give him a little bit bigger of a helmet
- 35:08and then tie down or like tighten down a screw or
- 35:11something like that. He said had some things to
- 35:13figure out equipment wise, but the staff's working on it.
- 35:16He said he should be good to go from here, but I guess we'll see
- 35:19because that's two games in a row where he had a RIP in his
- 35:22ear after the game. I I was like, you just hitting
- 35:24people too hard. And he goes, I guess.
- 35:26So yeah, I guess they just got to got to figure out the
- 35:30equipment stuff there for for and.
- 35:32Kaden Wegen was also part of the media availability today.
- 35:36He continues to move up the ranks, I think, as to where he
- 35:40ranks in the in the Ference era amongst kick returners.
- 35:44He's so darn gifted and I love the fact that Lester's now
- 35:47incorporating him more in the offense.
- 35:50Does he even want to get more involved?
- 35:52It was up to him. Oh yeah, I'm sure he would want
- 35:55the ball every play if it was up to him.
- 35:57But yeah, I know getting the ball in the backfield is
- 36:01basically a running back, a daddy, you know, speedy running
- 36:05back in the backfield has been something that he's really
- 36:07liked. It was a conversation he and and
- 36:10and Lester had a few weeks ago. And, you know, they're they're
- 36:14happy to keep it rolling. It's been working and and yeah,
- 36:18I mean, we didn't actually said he played running back in high
- 36:20school. So he said it's been sort of a
- 36:21seamless transition. He's still, you know, he's still
- 36:24that return man being the mid season watch list for the Jet
- 36:27Award and winning it last year. That's still his specialty.
- 36:30But yeah, I didn't know he played running back in high
- 36:32school. Didn't know that until today.
- 36:33And then, of course, became a receiver at Iowa Western and
- 36:36then here at Iowa. But yeah, they're they're using
- 36:38him a lot out of the backfield and they're happy to keep it
- 36:40going. Mix things up too, Like when
- 36:42you're running the ball that well, teams are going to figure
- 36:45out a way to stop you, you know, load the box and such.
- 36:47But his speed and ability to get to the outside really adds
- 36:51another layer to this offense, especially when when they're not
- 36:54passing the ball particularly well.
- 36:56So this is really an intriguing addition, a new layer to this
- 37:00offense that that Lester has figured out.
- 37:03The battle for the Pig this week Minnesota and you saw the return
- 37:07of Darius Taylor last week and as he goes, certainly this
- 37:10Minnesota team goes. What did the guys have to say
- 37:13about the Gophers matchup this week?
- 37:15Playing for the Pig? Yeah, Expectations are that it's
- 37:19going to be physical. You know, I actually had this
- 37:22conversation with my fiance the other night about Darius Taylor
- 37:25watching the Nebraska, Minnesota game, is that he's always really
- 37:28good. And then they play Iowa and he's
- 37:30not very good anymore. And I mean, seriously, like, go
- 37:33back and look at the stats. I don't know that he's done much
- 37:35of anything against Iowa in his career with Minnesota last year,
- 37:39of course, the cable Johnson game.
- 37:41But one thing that Logan Jones is that it and Xavier Wampa
- 37:45said, for that matter, it's one of the more physical games that
- 37:48they play all year. And I mean, they're playing in
- 37:49the Big 10. So things are going to be
- 37:51physical. But this is a rivalry.
- 37:53This is a game where both teams want to come home with with the
- 37:56trophy. And and yeah, they're not
- 37:58they're not messing around. I mean, the history is there
- 38:01with this this rivalry, especially going back two years
- 38:04ago. And I'm sure that the Hawks went
- 38:05avenge that game, especially in Kennick Stadium.
- 38:08What did you think? We got like 30 seconds left.
- 38:10What did you think of Drake Lindsay when you're watching the
- 38:13football game? Well, I only got to watch like
- 38:16one or two clips because I had to watch or head out and watch
- 38:20watch some high school football for prep Redstone.
- 38:22But I have heard some good things.
- 38:24I haven't watched him too much extensively.
- 38:27That'll be something I do a little bit more of this week.
- 38:29What did you guys? I thought I was really
- 38:31impressed. He's a big dude.
- 38:32You know where he's going to be. He's going to be in the pocket.
- 38:34He's not a threat to run, but he can sling it a little bit and
- 38:36the trench, right, Like 6566. Kind of Nate Stanley.
- 38:40Like, yeah, good. That's a good one.
- 38:42That's good. Good stuff, Elliot.
- 38:43We're out of time, buddy. Thanks for doing this, as
- 38:45always. I just looked at your picture of
- 38:47Wampke's ear, man. Oh, my God.
- 38:50Nasty. Good stuff, Elliot.
- 38:52Thank you, buddy. I appreciate it.
- 38:54Absolutely. Thank Dad.
- 38:55Yeah, talk to you next week, Elliot Cleff, 24/7 Sports,
