- 0:05Welcome back to The Payment Show podcast live from Money 2020
- 0:08USA. We're joined by David Dohan, CPO
- 0:11of Savvy Money. David, welcome to the show.
- 0:13Please introduce yourself. Tell us a bit about your role at
- 0:15Savvy. Sure.
- 0:16So David Dohan, I'm the Chief Product Officer here at Savvy
- 0:19Money. I've been here about 3 1/2 years
- 0:21and it's been a fun growth story for Savvy Money as we've gotten
- 0:25to over 1500 financial institutions we work with as a
- 0:28company. Brilliant.
- 0:29And some very exciting news today, $225 million investment.
- 0:33Can we start with that? I mean, we've got to talk about
- 0:35it. Very exciting.
- 0:36I mean, look, I think it's a it's a testament to the business
- 0:39that we built and a lot of awareness in the financial
- 0:42community that we're on to something really big, right in
- 0:44terms of our support. So PSG, Canopy, both incredible
- 0:48partners and so we're really are looking to them not just for the
- 0:51capital, but also some of the strategy, some of the strategic
- 0:54introductions we, we believe they can help us make.
- 0:57So it really is about accelerating the good work we've
- 1:00done. And I think that's a, it's a
- 1:01good testament to the, the strength of the company.
- 1:04And we wanted to dive into your latest research today on
- 1:08financial Wellness and particularly looking at that
- 1:09Gen. Z, you know, part of the world.
- 1:11Can you tell us a little bit more about that?
- 1:12Certainly so we've done so many of our credit unions, banks,
- 1:16they're always asking about Gen. Z.
- 1:17How do we attract more Gen. Z partners, right?
- 1:20And so part of Savvy Money, what we solve for is providing kind
- 1:24of a fintech experience inside of a bank or credit union.
- 1:28And we're constantly innovating. And so they asked us like, hey,
- 1:31how can we do better with Gen. Z?
- 1:32So we conducted a survey of about 1000 Gen.
- 1:35Z members to really get their impression kind of what's
- 1:37working for them, what are they looking for?
- 1:39And we discovered some very, very interesting statistics.
- 1:43Generally, I would say that really Gen.
- 1:45Z is really, they're motivated by financial independence, but
- 1:48there's really gaps in their confidence and their knowledge
- 1:50about the financial finances in general.
- 1:53So just some facts and figures for yourself.
- 1:55For example, only 14% are really confident in their own knowledge
- 1:59about financial services. And think about that.
- 2:01There's so many resources out there.
- 2:03There's Chat GPTS, there's websites.
- 2:05So yet only 14% are feeling confident, right?
- 2:0886% want to know more about financial education, right?
- 2:12There's, there's a hunger for that.
- 2:13They don't want marketing, they don't want someone pushing
- 2:15products on them, but they want someone to explain, educate them
- 2:19and move them through the process.
- 2:20That's really where the gap is. Turns out that Gen.
- 2:23Z, they want to become financially independent.
- 2:26In fact, 91% of the people that are surveyed, they have
- 2:29financial goals. It's not like they're sitting
- 2:31around playing video games. Like they really have goals and
- 2:33they're motivated to do it, but they really, they don't know
- 2:35exactly how to get there. And there's some anxiety we're
- 2:38seeing out there. Roughly 64% of those folks are
- 2:41worried about their income or are they going to be able to
- 2:43save enough money. So we're seeing some anxiety,
- 2:46but at the same time this kind of thirst and this need for
- 2:48education. And are we doing enough to
- 2:51educate the youth of today on financial services finance?
- 2:55I don't think so. And frankly, not just the youth,
- 2:57it's everybody. Everybody can use, you know,
- 2:59primers in terms of financial education.
- 3:01So, for example, we also provide savvy money, provide a lot of
- 3:06tools and capabilities for people just to learn more.
- 3:08I mean, how does a credit score work?
- 3:10What if I open a new account? What does that do to my credit
- 3:12score? So Gen.
- 3:13Z really wants to know that. But frankly, you know, you and I
- 3:16need to understand that too, so we can manage our credit most
- 3:18effectively. A nice segue there into your
- 3:21credit snap acquisition then as well.
- 3:22Can you, can you tell us again a little bit about that?
- 3:24Sure. Credit Snap really is kind of
- 3:28another step in the vision of savvy money.
- 3:30So it's savvy money. We really are about educating
- 3:33consumers about credit score, how to make it better and then
- 3:36we also promote various loan offers to those folks that are
- 3:39pre qualified. What Credit Snap does is it
- 3:42allows us to take the consumer from education to an instant
- 3:46application where they can apply online, get approved online,
- 3:50sign their documents online and actually book the account, move
- 3:52money all digitally online. So Credit Snap is a huge step
- 3:56forward for us. And frankly, that's what Gen.
- 3:58Z is looking for. They want that fintech
- 4:00experience, you know, click, click, click here, sign, you're
- 4:03done. They don't want to walk into a
- 4:04branch and have an hour conversation with someone,
- 4:06right? They really want that kind of
- 4:08more fintech experience, seamless, easy to do.
- 4:11And so the credit step acquisition really opens us to
- 4:14this entire market where it's now a possibility.
- 4:17And then I guess we can't really be at Money 2020 this year and
- 4:20not talk about AI. But specifically for you, I
- 4:22wanted to ask, are banks doing enough with AI?
- 4:26So I would say, no, they're not doing enough today.
- 4:29And we actually had a partner Advisory Board.
- 4:31So we, we got together, you know, forty of our top partners
- 4:33and we had a roundtable discussion, open discussion
- 4:35about AI and what it means to them.
- 4:37And there's a, there's a, there's a thirst and a hunger to
- 4:40do more with AI. But what I'm hearing is some of
- 4:43the compliance concerns are slowing them down a little bit,
- 4:45a little bit more conservative. They're not really sure where to
- 4:48start. And so some of our partners are
- 4:50using AI for what I'll call more back office applications, so
- 4:53streamlining their own internal operations, but not enough of
- 4:56them have actually product ties, introduced AI into the fabric of
- 5:00their product. And that's something we're
- 5:01working on. It's savvy money to make it not
- 5:04just AI for AI sake. But think about all the data
- 5:06that we have about someone's credit report.
- 5:08Wouldn't it be great if you can log in and say, hey, my credit
- 5:11score went down by 50 points, what happened?
- 5:13AI is capable of doing those kinds of things and creating
- 5:16that real time interactivity that's personalized for that
- 5:19individual member or user. And frankly, that's what Genzi
- 5:21wants as well. They want this level of
- 5:23personalization that they're just not getting from their open
- 5:26websites. Yeah, and I guess Gen.
- 5:29Z, you know, are quite fickle as well with the brands that they
- 5:32trust and they want to look at everything a company's doing
- 5:35behind the scenes. How are you guys winning over
- 5:37the trust of those Gen. Z individuals?
- 5:39And so we, we really a savvy money's kind of behind the
- 5:42scenes, right. Even though we power some you
- 5:44know, 1500 plus financial institutions, we really treat it
- 5:47as a white label solution. So we are kind of behind the
- 5:49scenes and so the way we engender trust is by building on
- 5:53the banks own brand equity. So it's all branded for the
- 5:56bank, all the communications are branded for the bank.
- 5:58So look and feels like my bank in this age of fraud that's
- 6:02really important, right? You don't know who you can trust
- 6:04and what's the links to click on.
- 6:05So we allow each of our bank partners and credit union
- 6:08partners to kind of extinctly express their brand and that
- 6:11goes for our customer communications, our our tone,
- 6:15all that really reflects the values of the bank.
- 6:17So that's how we kind of engender trust in that model.
- 6:20That's great, and we're at Money 2020.
- 6:22Obviously, we like to ask all of our guests why this is such an
- 6:25important event. Well, it's, it's kind of where
- 6:28things happen, right? This is where this is where you
- 6:30know the key industry leaders. This is how money moves today
- 6:33and into the future. So I learn a lot when I come
- 6:35here, just talking to the various vendors and we see a lot
- 6:38of our partners too, which is really important to be able to
- 6:40kind of reach out to the partners.
- 6:42So really good on the networking and the connectivity, but I also
- 6:45learned a lot of good stuff every day or every time I come
- 6:48to Money 2020. And competitors probably
- 6:50revealing insights into their own products and services for
- 6:53someone in your role like you want to see what the
- 6:55competition's doing and what they're building as well.
- 6:57Right. Absolutely.
- 6:58Look, and the road map's always evolving, right?
- 7:00Many of our banks and credit union partners look to us to do
- 7:03innovation. So it's kind of on us to say,
- 7:04hey, here's what we're seeing, sort through the good and the
- 7:07bad and say, hey, this is we're going to put this on the road
- 7:09map and make it happen. So that's really part of the
- 7:11role. It's to sort through that stuff.
- 7:13Really interesting. Thanks for sharing that with us.
- 7:16And just one final section, So we ask all of our guests at the
- 7:19very end of this segment that we run, we have a section called
- 7:22the Shelf of Shame. It's where you nominate
- 7:25something that really grinds your gears.
- 7:26It can be in payments, it can be in fintech, in life in general.
- 7:30If it'd be if you were to nominate something that you
- 7:32could banish forever, what would you go for?
- 7:34Something I could banish forever.
- 7:37Gosh, I'd have to say, I guess some of the contracting
- 7:43complexities in our industry, there's so many, a lot of legal
- 7:47overhead because of the compliance.
- 7:49And so it, I think it creates friction, maybe healthy friction
- 7:52at sometimes, maybe unhealthy at other times.
- 7:54So just the third party agreements and we have to sign
- 7:56and you have to sign. So that friction can can be
- 7:59impediment to implementation and innovation, if you will.
- 8:02So that's that's one of the things that I could banish, but
- 8:04maybe at least simplify a little bit.
- 8:06That's what I would say. You Chuck NDA's in there as well
- 8:08for the day in my life. NDA's you got it right, any kind
- 8:11of exactly look and I know they sort of a valuable purpose, but
- 8:14gosh, can we make it simpler or easier so that it's not this
- 8:17huge pain every time we have. Platform in the UK that are
- 8:19building like a centralized NDA framework so that thousands of
- 8:23companies can basically work off the same model for the same
- 8:25mutual NDA and it just removes a lot of that back.
- 8:28And forth. That is interesting.
- 8:29So it's almost like, you know, once you sign, you can just say,
- 8:31hey, you've got my token. I agree to the token and like
- 8:33you're good. Exactly.
- 8:34Yeah. So you're all in that same NDA
- 8:36ecosystem effect. Brilliant.
- 8:38Thanks for coming on today, David.
- 8:39Yeah, my. Pleasure.
- 8:40Looking forward to see what you guys do with that massive
- 8:42investment as well. All right.
- 8:43Thank you. Appreciate it.
- 8:44All right, take care.
