- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the meat-eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely bug-bitten,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and in my case, underwear-less.
- 0:15Speaker 2: We hunt the meat-eater podcast. You can't predict anything.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Brought to you by First Light. When I'm hunting, I
- 0:23Speaker 1: need gear that won't quit. First Light builds no compromise
- 0:27Speaker 1: gear that keeps me in the field longer. No shortcuts,
- 0:31Speaker 1: just gear that works. Check it out at firstlight.com. That's F-I-R-S-T.com.
- 0:38Speaker 1: L-I-T-E dot com.
- 0:40Speaker 3: All right, everybody.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We're joined today by Dan Whitney. He probably knows Larry
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Cable Guy. We were laughing this morning because we
- 0:51Speaker 1: caught a quote from you, Spencer and I. We caught
- 0:54Speaker 1: a quote from you where you said, Larry makes the money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's right.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Larry makes the money and I spend the money.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Thank you, Larry. You're welcome. You're welcome.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Tell everybody what we're at right now.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We are in my sweet box, by the way, the
- 1:08Speaker 2: best sweet box in the stadium, for the University of Nebraska.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Taking on Maryland. We're about to go 5-0 for the
- 1:16Speaker 2: first time in like 12 years. Trying to build us
- 1:21Speaker 2: back into the great program that we once were, that
- 1:23Speaker 2: you know and love from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 1:29Speaker 2: so we're doing the show from my sweet box. Homecoming.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You're going to meet someone.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Homecoming. Oh, that's right.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's homecoming too.
- 1:37Speaker 5: We might be crowned king or queen.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That's great.
- 1:40Speaker 5: I'm so excited.
- 1:41Speaker 1: You're going to meet someone in a moment. And I
- 1:43Speaker 1: was trying to, I asked her to sell me on
- 1:45Speaker 1: the game.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And she did a great job. She laid out this
- 1:48Speaker 1: whole epic story about how you guys haven't won anything
- 1:51Speaker 1: in decades.
- 1:52Speaker 2: We've had a rough club.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And now you've got four. If you win today, it's
- 1:55Speaker 1: five in a row. And she made it seem like
- 1:57Speaker 1: the most important game that could possibly happen.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It really has.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Even though it's not that important of a game.
- 2:01Speaker 2: You just want us to pull out of this slump
- 2:03Speaker 2: so bad. So we're like, oh my gosh, we could
- 2:06Speaker 2: be 5-0. And then in the back of your head,
- 2:09Speaker 2: it's like the last nine, ten years anyway. 2016, we
- 2:14Speaker 2: had a good year. But you're like, oh my gosh.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Is this really, are we really playing this well? Or
- 2:20Speaker 2: is this a fluke? Are we going to blow it
- 2:22Speaker 2: all this week? In the back of every Nebraskan's head,
- 2:25Speaker 2: it's like, even if it's 24 to three, say we
- 2:29Speaker 2: got a 21 point lead with five minutes left in
- 2:31Speaker 2: the game, still in the back of your head, we're
- 2:34Speaker 2: going to blow it.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Tortured fans.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's never over until that whistle goes, you know? So anyway,
- 2:40Speaker 2: that's a big, a big deal. I appreciate you coming
- 2:43Speaker 2: here to do the, do it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Oh, this is a great place to do it.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I thought this would be a great venue.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Because Spencer, I was saying, he's an actual football fan.
- 2:50Speaker 2: He knows all the rules.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Special place to be.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It is. It's iconic here.
- 2:57Speaker 1: He grew up one state off.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Where at?
- 3:00Speaker 3: South Dakota, just like 30 minutes from the Nebraska border.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We got a lot of good players from South Dakota.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I got no problem with South Dakota.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Good, good.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Here's how we got to start.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I don't know why South Dakota calls us names. We
- 3:10Speaker 2: don't call them names.
- 3:11Speaker 3: He told me that this morning. Well, I wasn't sure
- 3:13Speaker 3: if you guys were aware that in South Dakota we'd
- 3:15Speaker 3: call you sand lizards because of your inferior soil. Is
- 3:19Speaker 3: that something you were aware of, that you're a sand lizard?
- 3:21Speaker 2: I've never really looked at people's soil enough to make
- 3:25Speaker 2: fun of them.
- 3:26Speaker 3: That's why you're in Nebraska.
- 3:27Speaker 5: That's a South Dakota challenge.
- 3:28Speaker 3: That's a sand lizard thing.
- 3:30Speaker 4: I understand there's not a lot to do in South Dakota.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 3:33Speaker 5: But when you're talking about it.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Your soil's inferior than our soil. That's not really a burn.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You're right. That's a reflection on us. We need to
- 3:42Speaker 3: work on that.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That's more of a geological observation than a character observation.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I'm not offended by it.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Being a football game, we've got to start with something. Now,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we've been engaged in this very long process that you
- 3:54Speaker 1: haven't been involved in of trying to find a way
- 3:59Speaker 1: to make, this might seem trivial, but hear me out,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Trying to find a way to make a regular, normal
- 4:06Speaker 1: hot dog.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:07Speaker 1: With deer meat.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:09Speaker 1: People are always passing off venison hot dogs, and you
- 4:12Speaker 1: eat it, and you're like, it's just not a hot dog.
- 4:14Speaker 1: You made a sausage.
- 4:15Speaker 4: It's like an AI hot dog.
- 4:16Speaker 2: It's not good.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So we teamed up with... We were able to send...
- 4:21Speaker 1: Come on over, Layla.
- 4:22Speaker 2: This is Layla, everybody.
- 4:24Speaker 1: This is Layla Benzor from the Lawful Meat Lab here at.
- 4:27Speaker 2: University of Nebraska.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Go Big Red!
- 4:29Speaker 2: Go Big Red! Yeah, that's right. So she....
- 4:33Speaker 1: Is a meat scientist here at this very university. At
- 4:36Speaker 1: this very university. Studies hot dogs.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Can I ask her something? Ask her everything. When you
- 4:42Speaker 2: were little, did people come up to you and go, Salela,
- 4:45Speaker 2: what do you want to be?
- 4:45Speaker 5: When you grow up, a meat scientist.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's right.
- 4:49Speaker 1: At what age did you realize you're calling?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 4:53Speaker 6: When I was little, we used to process hogs in
- 4:57Speaker 6: our garage for Christmas. That was kind of my first
- 5:02Speaker 6: meat thing. I didn't know I wanted to be a
- 5:04Speaker 6: meat scientist then. I thought I was going to be
- 5:06Speaker 6: a horse judger and then I went to college and
- 5:08Speaker 6: that didn't go well. So I switched over to meat science.
- 5:12Speaker 6: So I guess I was about 20 or so. That
- 5:15Speaker 6: 20 to 22 age range is a little blurry.
- 5:17Speaker 2: So I don't know about the timeline. So you grew
- 5:19Speaker 2: up on a pig farm? Not exactly.
- 5:22Speaker 6: So I grew up in North Texas, but I'm Hispanic
- 5:25Speaker 6: and it's really traditional for us to slaughter a hog
- 5:27Speaker 6: around Christmas time and make tamales and that kind of stuff.
- 5:31Speaker 2: So yeah, we.
- 5:32Speaker 6: You know, we processed our own meat at home and
- 5:35Speaker 6: then it kind of just felt really natural when I
- 5:38Speaker 6: went to college and this was an option.
- 5:40Speaker 1: How do you say hot dog in Spanish?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Salchicha.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Tell me again?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Salchicha. Okay. Salchicha. I mean, that's common knowledge.
- 5:48Speaker 1: That's common. And then, so we sent the deer meat down.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Wouldn't it be frio perro? Hot dog, perro caliente. Perro caliente.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Perro caliente. Yeah. Frío means cold dog. Yeah, cold dog.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I speak a little Spanish.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm catching that.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Estudiaremos español muy poquito en la escuela. Okay. Wow.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You were just ketchup, weren't you?
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm good here. You got yours.
- 6:10Speaker 1: This is me. Thin bead.
- 6:12Speaker 2: See, now they yell at you when you're like, a
- 6:14Speaker 2: hot dog is only mustard only. I know.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I knew all that. I thought about that. I thought
- 6:19Speaker 1: about when you asked me what I wanted on it,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I didn't want to insult your like insult you by
- 6:26Speaker 1: doing the ketchup thing. So I thought maybe you were
- 6:28Speaker 1: a snob. But then you told me you've also early
- 6:31Speaker 1: on had an interest in research in hot dogs. You
- 6:34Speaker 1: said it's like a poor people's food. And there's not
- 6:38Speaker 1: a lot of research into food that would be like
- 6:40Speaker 1: lower economic class foods.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Who am I to tell you what you want on
- 6:46Speaker 6: your hot dog?
- 6:46Speaker 2: You put on anything you want on your hot dog.
- 6:47Speaker 4: You should let people eat the hot dog as much
- 6:49Speaker 4: as they want.
- 6:49Speaker 2: What kind of hot dog? Exactly.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Okay, so this is a genuine, this is a University
- 6:55Speaker 1: of Nebraska.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yep.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Lawful meat lab with just regular hunter-killed deer meat.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Dragged out of the woods.
- 7:04Speaker 2: For real. 100%.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Yeah, dragged out of the woods.
- 7:06Speaker 3: This could be the answer.
- 7:07Speaker 2: My boy shot this. For real? I might try it. Mm-hmm.
- 7:19Speaker 2: There we go.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I can say already you did the impossible. You made
- 7:25Speaker 1: a regular hot dog.
- 7:28Speaker 3: The taste is there. The texture is there. You wouldn't
- 7:31Speaker 3: know it's deer.
- 7:33Speaker 2: No, but you would know it's got a hearty flavor.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It's got not a regular hot dog wiener flavor.
- 7:42Speaker 4: It's a little zhuzhed up.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Is it like a smokier taste?
- 7:48Speaker 6: Yeah, so I made these very artisanally in our research kitchen,
- 7:54Speaker 6: which is just really like a restaurant-style kitchen, but with
- 7:57Speaker 6: things that you could do that you could use at home.
- 7:59Speaker 6: And I smoke these at my house in my personal smoker.
- 8:02Speaker 6: So that's pecan wood you're tasting there.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Really?
- 8:05Speaker 1: But it's got the snap.
- 8:07Speaker 7: Yep.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And I'll tell you, when I made deer meat hot
- 8:10Speaker 1: dogs in the past, you could bend them over. That's right, yeah.
- 8:12Speaker 1: You could fold them like a paper clip.
- 8:15Speaker 6: It looked like an imitation crab stick instead of a
- 8:18Speaker 6: hot dog.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You could tie it in knots. This has got snap.
- 8:21Speaker 3: What percentage pork are these?
- 8:23Speaker 6: Oh, these are about, I believe, 15% fat.
- 8:29Speaker 3: That's like a winning percentage, too. It's not like this
- 8:31Speaker 3: is a pork hot dog.
- 8:32Speaker 6: Yeah, it's pretty low in fat and water. It's very,
- 8:36Speaker 6: very protein heavy.
- 8:37Speaker 2: You know, I played golf with George Lopez one time.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 2: And I believe he said that he smoked stuff in
- 8:42Speaker 2: his house as well.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 2: We love our smoked meats, man.
- 8:47Speaker 1: We're going to meet with.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Man, this is. I like it. No, it's great.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And we're going to meet. We're meeting very early tomorrow
- 8:53Speaker 1: to make hot dogs. Yes.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 6: Broad and early.
- 8:55Speaker 2: 7 a.m. meet up. That's right.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Hot dog making 7 a.m.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Tomorrow.
- 8:59Speaker 1: University of Nebraska.
- 8:59Speaker 2: That's right. All right, Laila.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Thanks for bringing us out.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But I'll say that you won.
- 9:05Speaker 1: It's got the snap. It's got the taste. It is
- 9:09Speaker 1: possible to make a normal deer meat hot dog.
- 9:11Speaker 6: It is possible.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It's not easy, but it is possible.
- 9:13Speaker 2: No, but it is good. I like it. No, I
- 9:15Speaker 2: think it's great. No, it brings me into this. Can
- 9:17Speaker 2: I do this? This reminds me of one of my
- 9:20Speaker 2: only favorite jokes I ever wrote.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Please.
- 9:22Speaker 2: It's my wife's favorite joke, and Laila, you remind me
- 9:25Speaker 2: of this. I used to do a joke about my sister.
- 9:28Speaker 4: It was the strangest job on the planet.
- 9:32Speaker 2: She's a hot dog whisperer. Okay. And I didn't know
- 9:36Speaker 2: what it was. Mm-hmm. So I said, what is a
- 9:39Speaker 2: hot dog whisperer? And he said, give me a hot dog.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I'll show you. She goes, boy, that's a good hot dog. Okay.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I know, right? That's good. That's one of my all-time favorites.
- 10:00Speaker 2: jokes ever.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And does that joke kill? Does the audience go crazy
- 10:03Speaker 3: for that one?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Can I tell you my favorite Larry the Cable Guy joke?
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 3: We'll see if you remember it. It's about your wife
- 10:12Speaker 3: taking last name. Do you remember this joke?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Well, so Steve and I, we both married women who
- 10:18Speaker 3: did not take our last name. So will you tell
- 10:21Speaker 3: Steve the joke so Steve can enjoy it? This is
- 10:25Speaker 3: really good. I don't think it was my favorite joke
- 10:27Speaker 3: when I was a kid, but when I got older,
- 10:28Speaker 3: I was like, that's my favorite.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I love this girl. We were going to get married,
- 10:33Speaker 2: but she didn't want to take my name. And I'm like, well,
- 10:36Speaker 2: you got to take my name. But besides that, I
- 10:39Speaker 2: think it'd be cool, both of us named Larry. I
- 10:45Speaker 2: love that.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I got it.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I got it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You were mentioning it.
- 10:50Speaker 5: That's a good joke.
- 10:51Speaker 3: That's a very good joke.
- 10:52Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 10:53Speaker 1: My favorite, see, now that we're getting into this, I
- 10:57Speaker 1: think my favorite joke of yours was, this is an
- 10:59Speaker 1: old one, but you were explaining how deer, a lot
- 11:04Speaker 1: of people don't know of it, deer like the kardashians
- 11:07Speaker 1: get a new rack every.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Year yeah a new rack every year and then when
- 11:12Speaker 2: i hunt i dress in orange and stand by the
- 11:14Speaker 2: highway they think i'm a road comb they think they
- 11:18Speaker 2: think i'm a road comb.
- 11:20Speaker 1: How we got on to i want to tell you
- 11:22Speaker 1: how uh i want to tell you something jeff foxworthy
- 11:24Speaker 1: said about you and this this is who is it
- 11:26Speaker 1: again jeff a guy named jeff foxworthy just a kind
- 11:30Speaker 1: of a you know he's kind of a niche a
- 11:32Speaker 1: niche a niche little known comedian named jeff foxworthy This
- 11:36Speaker 1: is kind of the genesis of me wanting to talk
- 11:38Speaker 1: to you. Jeff Foxworthy was talking about you. And we
- 11:42Speaker 1: were kind of talking about deer hunting and everything. But
- 11:44Speaker 1: after we got done, Jeff Foxworthy.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Was saying.
- 11:49Speaker 1: How his friend Dan has golfed at that time. He said,
- 11:54Speaker 1: my friend Dan has golfed 20 years. And he says,
- 11:58Speaker 1: in that 20 years, he is no better than the
- 12:01Speaker 1: first time he golfed.
- 12:02Speaker 2: First of all. Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And then I soon realized you was talking about you.
- 12:08Speaker 2: First of all, I've only been golfing for 16 years. Okay.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's a good correction.
- 12:19Speaker 2: But Jeff is pretty close to that. I tell everybody,
- 12:22Speaker 2: I go, my handicap has improved five point, five strokes,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and it's only cost me three and a half million dollars. Okay.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Golf is the most frustrating sport on the planet.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You keep doing it, though.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I love it.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What do you like about it?
- 12:40Speaker 2: It's just, I love it. It's relaxing, and when you
- 12:44Speaker 2: get older, it's the only sport where you can actually
- 12:49Speaker 2: still hit, play, and have a shot like a professional
- 12:54Speaker 2: can do. You know what I mean?
- 12:55Speaker 4: You can still make a long putt like a pro does.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Got it. You can have the best putter in the
- 13:00Speaker 2: world out there, and if you're both hitting... 20 foot
- 13:03Speaker 2: putts and you're a good putter, you can hit him
- 13:06Speaker 2: just as good as he can. I mean, he'll probably
- 13:07Speaker 2: make more, but you know what I mean? You can compete.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Got it. Every now and then you'll be 145 yards out.
- 13:13Speaker 2: You'll take your nine iron and you'll drop it three
- 13:17Speaker 2: feet from the pin. That's what pros do. You can't
- 13:20Speaker 2: do that anywhere else. I can't play football anymore. I
- 13:23Speaker 2: can't play basketball anymore. No, I understand.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I love baseball. That's my favorite sport. I can't get
- 13:28Speaker 4: down on.
- 13:29Speaker 2: The ground ball anymore. I played in a celebrity softball tournament,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and I took my first swing, and I'm not kidding.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I mean, my innards were coming out my hind end.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I was like, oh, my gosh, why is my butt burning?
- 13:42Speaker 2: What did I just do? You know what?
- 13:44Speaker 4: I'll just coach.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And I loved it. I love playing baseball, and I
- 13:49Speaker 2: love playing league softball.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Can't do it. Golf, I can do it.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And I used to hate golf. I used to hate it.
- 13:57Speaker 2: But I'm getting a little better. You know, I got
- 13:59Speaker 2: a simulator. I bought a simulator. And I had to
- 14:05Speaker 2: let five people play through.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Steve's not going to get that joke. No, I got
- 14:10Speaker 3: that joke. Okay, a lot of our audience will, but
- 14:12Speaker 3: Steve might not.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I got that joke, man. And it's fun. You do
- 14:16Speaker 2: a lot of celebrity. You do celebrity tournaments, charity tournaments,
- 14:18Speaker 2: all for charity, which is fun. So I'm doing something
- 14:21Speaker 2: I like, raising money. Man, I did five charity tournaments.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Or four. I was going to do five. One was
- 14:29Speaker 2: for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and their wish was for me
- 14:33Speaker 2: not to participate this year. So I wanted to make
- 14:36Speaker 2: the kids happy.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 14:40Speaker 2: You know, one of my all-time favorites. I got to
- 14:42Speaker 2: tell you this joke. This is one of my all-time favorites.
- 14:44Speaker 2: This is really stupid. I just joke about. I do
- 14:48Speaker 2: this joke about, I was in this golf tournament in
- 14:50Speaker 2: Las Vegas, and we get done, and I'm in the
- 14:52Speaker 2: lobby of the hotel, and here comes Henry Winkler from
- 14:55Speaker 2: Happy Days wanting to borrow $ 500. And I'm thinking, well,
- 15:01Speaker 2: you're a dang Henry Winkler.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Why do you need $ 500?
- 15:03Speaker 2: And he's like, well, I don't want to run upstairs
- 15:05Speaker 2: and get my money. Larry, I swear, I'll give you $ 500,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and I'll meet you here in an hour, and I'll
- 15:11Speaker 2: give you $ 2, 000. I think, all right. So I give
- 15:15Speaker 2: Henry Winkler $ 500. I haven't seen Henry Winkler in 30
- 15:20Speaker 2: years since then, you know? So I got the research
- 15:24Speaker 2: and it turns out I got caught up in a
- 15:26Speaker 2: Fonzie scheme. See, that's what brings in the big dollars.
- 15:34Speaker 2: That kind of humor. He's a fisherman.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I don't even know that.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Fonzie?
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Fonzie's a fisherman.
- 15:39Speaker 2: He just goes like this and the fish come up.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He's a fisherman.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I heard that he's one of the nicest guys in
- 15:45Speaker 4: the business.
- 15:46Speaker 2: I'd love to meet him. He seems like a nice guy.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Dan, I know something you could spend Larry's money on.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I'm guessing you've seen that you can buy a urinal
- 15:55Speaker 3: from the old stadium. Are you going to do it?
- 15:57Speaker 2: No.
- 15:58Speaker 3: You're not going to? Only $ 3, 000.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I know. I don't think. I remember them urinals.
- 16:06Speaker 3: You used those urinals.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I did. I think first game I ever came, I
- 16:11Speaker 2: sat right over there with a friend of mine. And
- 16:13Speaker 2: it was an Oklahoma game. We won. I remember. Jerry
- 16:16Speaker 2: Godowski was quarterback. That's the thing about Nebraska fans. You
- 16:19Speaker 2: remember every game. You remember the wins. I don't remember
- 16:21Speaker 2: a lot about dates or– marriage details but i know
- 16:27Speaker 2: where i was sitting my first day right over there
- 16:30Speaker 2: and i did use the urinal yes and they're disgusting
- 16:33Speaker 2: and i don't want that in my head if it's
- 16:35Speaker 2: sitting i mean where would i even put it i
- 16:37Speaker 2: don't know hey come on i want to show you
- 16:38Speaker 2: my remember this everybody peed.
- 16:40Speaker 3: They have a lot of recommendations they say you could
- 16:42Speaker 3: fill it with flowers uh you could make it a
- 16:45Speaker 3: centerpiece in your garage.
- 16:46Speaker 1: It's porcelain what do they call that enamel.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Turn it into outdoor decor They got a lot of
- 16:51Speaker 3: recommendations on how you can use that.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you could do a planter out of it. As
- 16:57Speaker 2: a matter of fact, I think there was some moss
- 16:58Speaker 2: growing in it when it was here.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I bet there was. They look like it.
- 17:02Speaker 2: They look like it.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I think there was already stuff growing in it.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Dan, I read in a 2014 interview that you said, okay,
- 17:10Speaker 3: we'll find out. You said you'd rather bass fish than
- 17:12Speaker 3: deer hunt any day of the week.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what? Is that really true?
- 17:17Speaker 4: Look, I love hunting.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I love to go. I go down south. Here we go.
- 17:21Speaker 2: We shoot doves, birds. I love bird hunting. I love
- 17:23Speaker 2: shooting critters, coyotes, possums. Deer hunting, I just, man. I
- 17:32Speaker 2: don't want to sit in a tree stand freezing all night.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I've just never been into that. I grew up on
- 17:39Speaker 2: a farm raising pigs and the whole deal. So when
- 17:42Speaker 2: I grew up, it was all about fishing. When I
- 17:45Speaker 2: was a kid, I went fishing all the time. And so,
- 17:49Speaker 2: you know, I just grew up with that. Now, do
- 17:51Speaker 2: I hunt? Yeah, I've gone hunting a lot. Jeff always
- 17:53Speaker 2: invites me.
- 17:54Speaker 4: God bless Jeff.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I love Jeff. Jeff always invites me.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Dude, if you get an invitation to that place, I
- 17:59Speaker 1: would be going and doing that.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Hey, you ought to come. Hey, you want to go
- 18:02Speaker 2: with us? We're going to fly you into Canada. Oh,
- 18:04Speaker 2: that kind of hunt. They're going to drop us off.
- 18:07Speaker 2: We're going to get on horseback, and we're going to hunt, blah, blah, blah,
- 18:10Speaker 2: for 10 days.
- 18:11Speaker 5: I'll be honest.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I just got off the road.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I don't want to go flying into Canada and sitting
- 18:18Speaker 2: on a horse and sitting in a cabin. Jeff likes it,
- 18:21Speaker 2: which I love, and that he does like it. I'm
- 18:23Speaker 2: glad people do. So you give me that... You give
- 18:28Speaker 2: me that, right? Oh, that. That speaks to you. I
- 18:30Speaker 2: don't know what I got. What is this?
- 18:32Speaker 1: For you people just listening, he is pantomiming, hooking into.
- 18:35Speaker 2: A huge bass. Oh, yeah. You're not.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right. You guys, I forgot. This isn't like. Yeah,
- 18:41Speaker 4: so just.
- 18:41Speaker 1: No, a good percentage of the viewers will see it,
- 18:43Speaker 1: but the other ones, they need to know that he
- 18:44Speaker 1: just hooked a giant.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I love, I love bass fishing. You know, they jump
- 18:49Speaker 4: out of the water.
- 18:51Speaker 2: When you do the top water and they pop, there's
- 18:53Speaker 2: just something about it. And I love fishing. And it's
- 18:57Speaker 2: not that I got... Hunt all you want, you know?
- 19:00Speaker 2: I'm just... I'd much rather do that. More of an angler. Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 2: I just never... Now, Jeff, when we were on tour
- 19:05Speaker 2: all the time, look, I was gone all the time.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I lived on a tour bus. Me, my wife, then
- 19:11Speaker 2: we had kids. So I lived on a tour bus.
- 19:14Speaker 2: We did 276 days a year out on a tour bus. Serious.
- 19:19Speaker 2: So when I would get home and I would have
- 19:21Speaker 2: 10 days off, the last thing I was going to
- 19:24Speaker 2: do was go. No, I like what Jeff does now.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I like going out. We got targets. Me and my kid,
- 19:30Speaker 2: my kid loves to hunt. So we'd go out and,
- 19:33Speaker 2: you know, take your bow and you shoot.
- 19:35Speaker 4: We used to do it on tour.
- 19:36Speaker 2: We'd take our bows and Jeff and me and Bill
- 19:38Speaker 2: and Ron, we'd shoot stuff, you know, out in the
- 19:41Speaker 2: targets in the back. That was Jeff's idea. That ended
- 19:44Speaker 2: real quick when one of us missed, hit the cement
- 19:46Speaker 2: wall and started flying around the green room he's like
- 19:48Speaker 2: maybe we better not bring bows anymore on tour yeah
- 19:51Speaker 2: and uh so uh yeah uh bass fishing is uh
- 19:57Speaker 2: i i do like that i i also read if
- 20:01Speaker 2: i had to pick yeah i.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Also read in your bio uh do you know this
- 20:05Speaker 3: you were born in the back of an el camino
- 20:07Speaker 3: Who came up with that detail?
- 20:09Speaker 2: It was actually a Chevy. It was a Corvair. Oh.
- 20:14Speaker 2: It was a pickup Corvair. Okay. My parents were at
- 20:19Speaker 2: some concert. I don't know what it was.
- 20:21Speaker 3: This is real.
- 20:22Speaker 2: And dad didn't want to go. She's like, my water broke.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I got it. He's like, they're going to do an encore.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You know, so. No, actually, no, that's not true. I
- 20:36Speaker 2: made all that up. I used to say I was a,
- 20:39Speaker 2: that was the original joke. Okay. The original joke, the
- 20:43Speaker 2: original joke was from my bio I wrote a long
- 20:47Speaker 2: time ago. I say he was born in the backseat
- 20:49Speaker 2: of a, you know, the original joke to that was
- 20:52Speaker 2: I was born in, I was a C-section baby. Oh.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I was born in section C of the Leonard Skinner concert.
- 21:01Speaker 2: That was my original, the original joke. That's better.
- 21:07Speaker 1: That makes me want to jump to something I wanted
- 21:09Speaker 1: to ask you about, man. I was reading, this might
- 21:11Speaker 1: not be true either, on Wikipedia. Someone got in there
- 21:15Speaker 1: on Wikipedia, rightly or wrongly, and they said that you
- 21:20Speaker 1: identify as an REO Speedwagon fan.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:24Speaker 1: There are very, very few.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Of us yeah left alive there's a lot of us
- 21:29Speaker 2: because they still they until they broke up recently they
- 21:34Speaker 2: packed it out really they were one of the few
- 21:37Speaker 2: bands that was still pretty much together from the early
- 21:40Speaker 2: 80s they look even though they lost gary richard after
- 21:43Speaker 2: guitar player the drummer retired but right after the big
- 21:47Speaker 2: you know the big hits the the the album the
- 21:51Speaker 2: what was the one uh.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Well, the last stuff they did that got notoriety, remember
- 21:55Speaker 1: that video where he's messing around with that Astro, whatever
- 21:58Speaker 1: that thing is, like that little electric ball, what do.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You call those? I don't know.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I feel like you touch the outside and it's like
- 22:03Speaker 1: the light shooting.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Was that, I can't fight this heat?
- 22:07Speaker 2: Okay. That was a big hit. Yeah. But a high
- 22:11Speaker 2: infidelity right after that is when they got a new
- 22:16Speaker 2: guitar player and So for the last 45 years, it's
- 22:20Speaker 2: been the same band right after pretty much that.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So they would pack it out everywhere.
- 22:27Speaker 2: And Bruce Hall was the original guy that I met,
- 22:30Speaker 2: the bass player that had been there since the late 70s.
- 22:34Speaker 2: So Bruce had a really good buddy. He plays in
- 22:35Speaker 2: my golf tournament all the time. I love him to death. Oh, really?
- 22:37Speaker 2: Him and his wife.
- 22:38Speaker 1: So you got like the inside perspective.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 2: So they would all come and he would get everybody
- 22:42Speaker 2: out there to play in my golf tournament. The only
- 22:44Speaker 2: one didn't play was Kevin. Kevin didn't really golf. So
- 22:46Speaker 2: Kevin never came out. But I would go to their concerts.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And I used to have, when I was on tour,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I used to have an air guitar band called Air Disaster.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So we'd put on wigs. We'd put on long hair wigs.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I had them go to the pawn shop and buy
- 22:59Speaker 2: three boom mics, two guitars, a drum set. And we
- 23:04Speaker 2: put the padding on it so you couldn't really hear
- 23:07Speaker 2: you play, but you're playing. And we would play 12
- 23:10Speaker 2: hard rock metal songs on stage. That's what we would do.
- 23:14Speaker 4: And so Bruce knew I did that. So I went,
- 23:17Speaker 4: the first.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Time I went and did something with him was.
- 23:22Speaker 4: For tornado victims in Illinois. So we did a benefit.
- 23:26Speaker 2: There's a bunch of people there, Nugent Center and Speedwagon
- 23:28Speaker 2: and Styx and Head East and Richard Marks. Head East.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I've seen those guys. Yeah, woo.
- 23:33Speaker 1: God, man, you're throwing back some.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Old hits, dude.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Yeah. So I went up and played Roll With The
- 23:39Speaker 2: Changes and air-guitared the guitar solo.
- 23:43Speaker 5: And everybody thought I was playing.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I got their cameras out, and I'm up there. And
- 23:47Speaker 2: the guitar player, Dave, Dave Amato, he's over there. He's
- 23:49Speaker 2: really playing. And I'm out front, not even playing. I
- 23:53Speaker 2: did that like four or five times with him. It
- 23:54Speaker 2: was great. But here's the coolest story. Can I tell
- 23:56Speaker 2: you this? Please. Yeah, yeah. This is how awesome they were.
- 24:02Speaker 2: My dad had a band. My dad did all kinds
- 24:04Speaker 2: of things. He was a guidance counselor. He was a
- 24:06Speaker 2: pastor of two churches. He had cattle and horses. I
- 24:12Speaker 2: did the pigs.
- 24:16Speaker 4: But on the weekends, he had a band. He was
- 24:18Speaker 4: in a band called the Memphis Beats.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And my dad had been playing guitar since he was
- 24:23Speaker 2: a kid. Learned it himself. But my dad... had a, has,
- 24:28Speaker 2: gave it to me since he's passed, a 1953 Fender Telecaster. Okay.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I mean, it's like, you know, this is how cool
- 24:37Speaker 2: the guitar is. I remember I wanted to get it
- 24:38Speaker 2: refurbished for him one time because I didn't know, you know,
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm not a guitar guy. So I took it to
- 24:43Speaker 2: my buddy that ran a guitar shop. I said, hey,
- 24:44Speaker 2: I want to get this refurbished for my dad, kind
- 24:46Speaker 2: of cleaned it up a little bit, you know. He goes,
- 24:48Speaker 2: oh yeah, sure. Is that the original case? I go, yeah, well,
- 24:51Speaker 2: that's an old case. And he opens it up and he,
- 24:54Speaker 2: He looks, and he's got this look on his face.
- 24:57Speaker 2: He looks, and he goes, don't touch this.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Do you have any clue what you got here?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Oh, I got it. So anyway, Dave Amato, I showed
- 25:05Speaker 2: it to him from Speedwagon. He goes, man, that thing.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I go, hey, Dave, that thing has not been plugged
- 25:10Speaker 2: into an amp and played on a stage since 1977. Huh.
- 25:16Speaker 2: You want to play it, Willie? Would you play it
- 25:18Speaker 2: on a show or something? And he goes, are you
- 25:21Speaker 2: kidding me? I would love to. Wow. So that night,
- 25:24Speaker 2: sold-out show in Omaha, REO Speedwagon and Def Leppard and Tesla.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Sold-out show, right? And I get a phone. I'm about
- 25:34Speaker 2: to leave to go up to the concert. I get
- 25:36Speaker 2: a phone call. It's Kevin Cronin. Hey, Dan.
- 25:39Speaker 4: You know, he's like, hey, Dan, this guitar.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Dave doesn't play Fenders.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I'm a Fender guy. This guitar's got, man, it's got
- 25:47Speaker 2: music that just wants to fly.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Out of it, man.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I love this guitar.
- 25:50Speaker 5: You have no idea how cool this guitar is.
- 25:53Speaker 2: So anyway, so I went to the concert, and Kevin Cronin,
- 25:58Speaker 2: sound tech, takes my guitar out halfway through the show,
- 26:01Speaker 2: and Kevin Cronin tells a story about my dad's guitar
- 26:05Speaker 2: and played Riding the Storm out with my dad's guitar.
- 26:09Speaker 2: And then he'd come over to the side of the stage,
- 26:12Speaker 2: during the instrumental so I could get pictures of it.
- 26:16Speaker 2: And then he looked at me, he goes, you good?
- 26:17Speaker 2: I go, yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 4: He goes, man, okay. And he goes back down. Dude,
- 26:19Speaker 4: it was the coolest thing ever.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 4: I was so excited about it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: When I say I'm an REO Speedwagon fan, I should
- 26:27Speaker 1: clarify that more and say I'm a riding the storm out,
- 26:30Speaker 1: roll with the changes.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I hear you.
- 26:32Speaker 1: The closest I've seen, closest I've come to seeing him
- 26:35Speaker 1: is one time we were down fishing in Florida, and
- 26:37Speaker 1: this is when I used to drink, and we were
- 26:38Speaker 1: out looking for a liquor store.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And in our wanderings looking for a liquor store, we
- 26:43Speaker 1: wound up at a REO Speedwagon cover band concert in
- 26:47Speaker 1: the back of a liquor store.
- 26:49Speaker 5: And this outfit was called Stormbringer.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Wow.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Stormbringer, the REO cover, a REO Speedwagon cover band.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Stormbringer.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Sat through the whole thing. Sat through the whole thing,
- 27:02Speaker 1: and they never did roll the changes.
- 27:04Speaker 2: No.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And one of my buddies said, I don't think they
- 27:08Speaker 1: have a keyboard player who's up for the task.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And so they got to skip that one because they
- 27:13Speaker 1: can't do the solo.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Probably right. That's a tough deal. Yeah. They're pretty good though.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Stormbringer?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I honestly don't remember. I just remember by disappointment they
- 27:21Speaker 1: never got to the reason I was there. It'd be
- 27:24Speaker 1: like if you went to see Head East.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:26Speaker 1: And they never did... What's their main hits?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Without any reason.
- 27:31Speaker 2: That one? Yeah. No.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Oh, Save My Life and Going Down for the Last Time.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Yeah, Save My Life. If you like going to them
- 27:36Speaker 5: and not seeing them.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Then he gets real high.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Down for the last time.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. Dude. Talented. We could talk about some
- 27:43Speaker 2: old tunes, but I want to talk about- Now they're
- 27:44Speaker 2: head west. Are they? No. Dude, I used to do jokes.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I fell for the joke. Yeah, you used to do jokes.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I used to do jokes. Jokes for a living. Tell
- 27:52Speaker 2: me about growing up- Wait, I used to do a
- 27:54Speaker 2: joke about- What was it? I wanted to get Molly
- 27:57Speaker 2: Hatchet for a party I was having. I was going
- 28:01Speaker 2: to get a Molly Hatchet tribute band. They were too expensive,
- 28:04Speaker 2: so I ended up getting Molly Hatchet. That's really good.
- 28:10Speaker 2: These hot dogs are good.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Tell me about, you grew up around agriculture. And you
- 28:16Speaker 1: still raise, you still are in the bull, like bucking,
- 28:20Speaker 1: what do you call them?
- 28:20Speaker 2: Look, bucking bulls. Look, when I was a kid, I
- 28:23Speaker 2: grew up right next to the sale barn. I wanted
- 28:25Speaker 2: to be a cattle auctioneer. Oh, really? When I was
- 28:27Speaker 2: a kid. When that song, one of my all-time favorite
- 28:31Speaker 2: movies is Convoy with Chris Christopherson.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 4: I mean, that was the craze, man.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I remember the first time I had my little walkie-talkie
- 28:38Speaker 2: and a semi was pulling cattle in. I'm like, breaker, breaker.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I'm just a kid.
- 28:43Speaker 2: All of a sudden, he goes, ah. I got you, buddy.
- 28:45Speaker 2: I got you. I see you over there.
- 28:47Speaker 5: I was like, oh, mom, they talked to me. They
- 28:49Speaker 5: talked to me.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I mean, this was, I was 30 years old then.
- 28:53Speaker 5: And no, man. I mean, I loved it.
- 28:57Speaker 2: So I spent, when I was a little kid, I
- 28:59Speaker 2: spent every day of my life at the sale bar
- 29:02Speaker 2: loading cattle trucks. Okay.
- 29:04Speaker 5: And we had a farm. For money or just because
- 29:06Speaker 5: you were down there?
- 29:08Speaker 2: Just because I liked it. And the guy that owned
- 29:10Speaker 2: it was like my adopted grandpa. Okay. And he knew
- 29:13Speaker 2: I loved that kind of stuff. And I raised pigs.
- 29:15Speaker 4: I was legitimately a kid pig farmer. I'd buy my
- 29:19Speaker 4: own hogs and I'd raise my own hogs.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Is that right, really?
- 29:21Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, man.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Man, at the most, I probably was looking after a
- 29:25Speaker 2: little over 200 head. You know, just as a kid,
- 29:29Speaker 2: I was the only, you know, seventh grader with a
- 29:31Speaker 2: good bank account. Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Not like as a 4-H program. you're doing it for sale.
- 29:36Speaker 2: No, I actually bought the 4-H Durox out, which I'll
- 29:41Speaker 2: never do again. She laid on her babies and ate
- 29:43Speaker 2: two of them. So Durox aren't very good at that.
- 29:46Speaker 2: But yeah, so that was fun. So my wife, I
- 29:49Speaker 2: met my wife. I met, she's from a small town
- 29:52Speaker 2: in Wisconsin. She grew up on a big old black
- 29:54Speaker 2: Angus cattle ranch. So yeah, so- I, uh, I've always
- 30:00Speaker 2: liked it. And then I moved to Florida and started
- 30:02Speaker 2: doing standup, but, uh, I always wanted like a little,
- 30:07Speaker 2: I always wanted cattle. And so now I'm able to
- 30:11Speaker 2: do it. So I got a little under 180 acres and,
- 30:16Speaker 2: and we got, uh, horses and a couple of donkeys and,
- 30:20Speaker 2: but I got into the buck and bull business because, uh,
- 30:26Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of rodeo. So in the 90s,
- 30:29Speaker 2: when I started making a little bit of money, finally,
- 30:31Speaker 2: Larry started making money for me. I started sponsoring a
- 30:35Speaker 2: buddy of mine named Tater Porter, who was a bull rider.
- 30:38Speaker 1: That's a real name.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Yeah, a bull rider. Tater Porter. Tater Porter. And he
- 30:42Speaker 2: used to travel with another bull rider named Spud Whitman.
- 30:46Speaker 2: I'm not kidding. Tater and Spud. And so I just
- 30:50Speaker 2: got into the PBR and bull riding and the NFR.
- 30:53Speaker 2: I loved it. Yeah. And so then I found out
- 30:57Speaker 2: you can start paying to put your name on bulls,
- 31:01Speaker 2: to sponsor bucking bulls. Okay. So I started paying, and
- 31:06Speaker 2: I had seven bucking bulls in the PBR, six or seven,
- 31:11Speaker 2: that I got to be part owner on. I got it.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Because I'm paying for the sponsorship.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker 2: And so one of.
- 31:18Speaker 4: My bulls in 2007, chicken on a chain.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. one buck and bull of the year. Damn.
- 31:26Speaker 1: And that makes you money.
- 31:28Speaker 2: It didn't make me a dime. Okay.
- 31:29Speaker 4: It gave me just the pridefulness of being able.
- 31:33Speaker 1: When you're part owner, I don't know if there's money
- 31:35Speaker 1: to be made.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Okay. There can be, depends on what kind of deal
- 31:38Speaker 2: you worked out, but I didn't know much about it.
- 31:40Speaker 4: And I was just like, yeah, take my money.
- 31:42Speaker 5: So I probably got ripped off.
- 31:43Speaker 2: I probably could have bought that bull 20 times over. Yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 3: What makes him the bull of the year? How do
- 31:47Speaker 3: they earn that?
- 31:48Speaker 4: Just the way he bucks.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Okay. The scores that he gets on it. The scores
- 31:52Speaker 2: of Cowboys get on him. uh, that, you know, they
- 31:55Speaker 2: score the bulls. So like, Oh, sorry.
- 31:57Speaker 3: You want like a real mean one or like a medium?
- 32:00Speaker 2: You want one that bucks, you want one buck, one
- 32:02Speaker 2: that twists kicks high. Uh, uh, that's what you want. Okay.
- 32:08Speaker 2: You want a cowboy to get a good score on him.
- 32:10Speaker 2: So if you have a bull and every time he
- 32:11Speaker 2: goes out, you know, The Cowboys are getting 85 and
- 32:14Speaker 2: a half, 86 and up on him. I mean, that's
- 32:17Speaker 2: good bull.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Um, uh, you know, and I just started learning about
- 32:21Speaker 2: that process of it. I was just, I just loved it. And,
- 32:24Speaker 2: but then I started learning about it and I met
- 32:26Speaker 2: a guy here, my partner, AJ, AJ Moss. When my
- 32:30Speaker 2: boy started, my boy came to me one day and said,
- 32:32Speaker 2: I want to ride basketball. Okay. And I'm like, man,
- 32:35Speaker 2: that's unbelievable. Here's this kid. I put in, I got
- 32:38Speaker 2: a whole facility for sports. I got a basketball court
- 32:41Speaker 2: and I got, You know, I got a, I got
- 32:45Speaker 2: a drop down net for hitting balls. Cause I said,
- 32:48Speaker 2: my kid's going to come in here and bring all
- 32:50Speaker 2: his friends. And they're going to, that I'll know where
- 32:52Speaker 2: my kid is at all the time because they'll be
- 32:54Speaker 2: over here playing sports.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Never played sports. And then one day he went, and
- 32:58Speaker 4: he's athletic, very athletic.
- 32:59Speaker 1: He was looking off to the other end of the property.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he was.
- 33:02Speaker 4: And then he came up to me and he had
- 33:04Speaker 4: been going to bull ride since he was a kid.
- 33:05Speaker 2: So he went to bull ride. So I said, okay, so.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I wanted to do it safely because that's a tough sport.
- 33:12Speaker 2: You got to be safe. And I didn't know who
- 33:15Speaker 2: around there, how to get him started or anything. So
- 33:19Speaker 2: I called, uh, uh, I called my buddy, uh, Cody Lambert,
- 33:25Speaker 2: who started the PBR told him he wanted to ride bulls.
- 33:29Speaker 2: And he said, ah, you know, a lot of these kids, uh,
- 33:32Speaker 2: try to do it, make them look tough, or get girls.
- 33:35Speaker 2: He goes, it's a dangerous sport. You can get permanently crippled.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Well, he was just, well.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Yeah. So he said, I'll tell you what. He says,
- 33:44Speaker 2: tell you what, Dan, how tall is he? How big
- 33:46Speaker 2: is he? I says, right now he's 5'6, about a
- 33:49Speaker 2: buck 17. He goes, well, he's right in the prime.
- 33:53Speaker 2: He says, I thought he was going to be a
- 33:55Speaker 2: big fat guy like you. I'm like, come on, Cody.
- 33:58Speaker 2: So he goes, I'll tell you what, bring him down.
- 34:00Speaker 2: He says, bring him down to me for three days.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Give him to me for three days. I'll find out
- 34:06Speaker 2: if he wants to bull ride or not. So right
- 34:08Speaker 2: then I'm thinking, oh boy, here we go. And he
- 34:11Speaker 2: came up to me and said he liked him. He
- 34:13Speaker 2: reminded him of his grandson. He had a kind heart.
- 34:17Speaker 2: He saw some talent in him. He said, you know,
- 34:20Speaker 2: these kids, that they want to do it. And can't
- 34:24Speaker 2: stop them they're gonna do without you you know when
- 34:26Speaker 2: it's turn 18 they're gonna go do it so if
- 34:29Speaker 2: they're gonna do it just find a place and do
- 34:30Speaker 2: it safe get him on steers and slowly move up
- 34:34Speaker 2: i said okay so there was really uh i met
- 34:37Speaker 2: this guy aj moss and i found he had buck
- 34:40Speaker 2: and bulls he had a bull in the pbr like
- 34:42Speaker 2: me i'm trying to shorten this story up so i
- 34:45Speaker 2: met aj and i took white out to aj and
- 34:49Speaker 2: uh he got on his first steer and that's when
- 34:51Speaker 2: i started saying.
- 34:52Speaker 4: You know what Why am I driving all the way
- 34:55Speaker 4: out here?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I just put my own bull riding ring in.
- 34:58Speaker 2: So I called Eddie Preford up. Eddie Preford cut me
- 35:01Speaker 2: a pretty good deal on. I bought the 2000 and 2004. No,
- 35:02Speaker 2: I bought the 2024 PBR buck and shoots that they
- 35:05Speaker 2: had in the world finals. Oh, okay.
- 35:16Speaker 1: So you got those instead of the University of Nebraska urinals.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I bought four of those and I bought that.
- 35:21Speaker 2: And every time we buck, we get two. I always
- 35:24Speaker 2: get two professional bullfighters and I get two EMTs. And
- 35:29Speaker 2: so it's invite only kids that are serious about bull
- 35:32Speaker 2: riding that have done it and they want to come
- 35:34Speaker 2: get on good stock. We have 50 bulls that range
- 35:37Speaker 2: from beginner all the way up to nasty.
- 35:40Speaker 1: But you personally, you don't get on those.
- 35:42Speaker 2: No, I'm too old. Are you kidding me? Remember?
- 35:45Speaker 5: I remember almost something come out of my butt.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I got you.
- 35:49Speaker 1: I didn't know if there's like a version. I didn't
- 35:52Speaker 1: know if there's a bull riding version. It's like a,
- 35:56Speaker 1: like a, like a, for, for older fellas. I mean, like, so,
- 36:00Speaker 1: so I'm your wife. If I'm 50.
- 36:06Speaker 2: I mean, no, you don't want to get on those sands.
- 36:10Speaker 2: They'll kill you, man.
- 36:11Speaker 3: You don't ride them, but I assume you name them.
- 36:14Speaker 2: We name them. It's fun.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Do you pick the names?
- 36:16Speaker 2: I pick the names.
- 36:17Speaker 3: What's the best name you've come up with?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Right now, my favorite name is the villain from Urban Cowboy. Okay.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Oh, Wes Hightower.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Is that the whole name?
- 36:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I named the bull named Wes Hightower, and he
- 36:31Speaker 2: is awesome. Yeah, he actually got in his first nfr
- 36:36Speaker 2: rodeo uh i put on an extreme bull so part
- 36:39Speaker 2: of i asked i said look if i'm gonna pay
- 36:41Speaker 2: put it put it on i want to get some
- 36:43Speaker 2: bulls in it so they let me bring a couple
- 36:45Speaker 2: bulls so i got west high tower boom he had
- 36:48Speaker 2: a guy off two seconds it was awesome but it's
- 36:50Speaker 2: fun you know i'm learning about it more and more
- 36:53Speaker 2: myself uh all all our bulls are at my buddies
- 36:56Speaker 2: because he's got the facilities for the bulls and he's
- 36:59Speaker 2: got the bull but we buy bulls together and And
- 37:02Speaker 2: it's fun, man.
- 37:03Speaker 1: And then you lease those out to rodeos?
- 37:06Speaker 2: No.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Or you sell them out?
- 37:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty much how they do it. They'll be
- 37:08Speaker 2: a rodeo. You want to be a contractor with good bulls. Yeah.
- 37:11Speaker 2: If you have good bulls, they'll know that you have
- 37:14Speaker 2: good bulls. And they'll go, hey, you know what? Call
- 37:19Speaker 2: Whitney Marsden. bucking bulls and get their bulls out here.
- 37:22Speaker 1: Are you to the point now where you can look
- 37:24Speaker 1: at one and know he's good just looking at him?
- 37:26Speaker 4: No, you never know.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Oh, you don't because you can't tell by looking.
- 37:29Speaker 4: You don't know at all. You can look at one
- 37:31Speaker 4: and go.
- 37:32Speaker 2: When you buy them, sometimes you buy them and they go, look,
- 37:35Speaker 2: these are bucked a few times. There's three good ones,
- 37:37Speaker 2: one bad. You got to take a chance. Sometimes you
- 37:39Speaker 2: don't know. You see what they were bred to, who
- 37:42Speaker 2: they were bred to. Sometimes you go to the sale
- 37:45Speaker 2: barn and you'll buy a bull and all of a
- 37:47Speaker 2: sudden he's a great bucking bull.
- 37:48Speaker 4: You just got to a bull.
- 37:50Speaker 2: For, you know, cheaply. I see. You never know. It's
- 37:54Speaker 2: like the best we've done so far is we bought
- 37:56Speaker 2: four bulls from Colorado from a guy.
- 37:59Speaker 4: Five grand each.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Okay. So we split it, 10 grand each. And one
- 38:03Speaker 2: of them has won four Buck and Bull Futurities for yearlings.
- 38:07Speaker 2: And we got offered 50 grand for it. There you go. So,
- 38:10Speaker 2: you know, it's like Austin Dillon does it, too, in
- 38:13Speaker 2: auto racing. Austin Dillon, I call him every now and then.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I called him, actually, when he locked out. He bought
- 38:19Speaker 2: these buckables because he's getting into it, too, and he
- 38:22Speaker 2: loves it. And he bought one, put it in the Futurity,
- 38:25Speaker 2: won $ 100, 000. Damn. I know. It's the way it is.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Look at that. So it's fun. It's a fun thing
- 38:34Speaker 2: to do. It's a hobby for me. I don't make
- 38:36Speaker 2: any money at it. I don't really... That's not why
- 38:40Speaker 2: I do it. When I did it, I told my wife,
- 38:43Speaker 2: I'm going to budget this much. Here's how much money
- 38:46Speaker 2: I can waste on this. And I'm just going to
- 38:48Speaker 2: have a good time doing it. And, you know, and
- 38:51Speaker 2: it's fun to do. And what I really, what we
- 38:55Speaker 2: try to pride ourself in is those bulls that are
- 38:58Speaker 2: really rough in the chutes, because some of the most
- 39:00Speaker 2: dangerous bull riding is in the chutes.
- 39:03Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Shoot procedure you need to know because that's the shoe
- 39:08Speaker 2: procedure and the get off once the ride's over you
- 39:11Speaker 2: really got to learn those are the two most dangerous
- 39:13Speaker 2: things the ride's fun if you're right right so shooters
- 39:17Speaker 2: but you see those bulls try to jump out and
- 39:19Speaker 2: they'll rare and they'll buck and they'll snort we try
- 39:22Speaker 2: to we try to get ones that are nice and
- 39:26Speaker 2: gentle in the chute and then you open the door
- 39:28Speaker 2: and they're open to shoot and they go nuts. So,
- 39:31Speaker 2: you know, when we train them, we run them through,
- 39:33Speaker 2: get used to what they're doing. We run them through
- 39:36Speaker 2: as many times, and we feel they're ready for like
- 39:38Speaker 2: a dummy to put on them. We'll put a dummy
- 39:40Speaker 2: on them, and then you put cowboys on them. But,
- 39:42Speaker 2: you know, we don't have a lot of really crazy
- 39:44Speaker 2: ones in the chutes. Most of ours are pretty good
- 39:46Speaker 2: in the chutes, so I'm happy with that.
- 39:51Speaker 3: We got to talk about some of the foundational Larry
- 39:54Speaker 3: the Cable Guy stuff.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Fish hook on the hat. Where did that come from?
- 39:58Speaker 3: Do you ever use it?
- 39:59Speaker 4: The fish hook on the hat?
- 40:00Speaker 2: Did you invent that?
- 40:01Speaker 3: No.
- 40:01Speaker 2: The fish hook on the hat was when I was
- 40:03Speaker 2: a kid growing up.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Most of the kids, you know, we grew up on farms.
- 40:08Speaker 2: So it just was a symbol for outdoorsy.
- 40:12Speaker 1: But that was pre-clip, though.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you made your own.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a hook hooked in your hat.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, we made our own clips. Oh, so you did.
- 40:20Speaker 1: You did mount them on a clip. You didn't just
- 40:22Speaker 1: jam it under the thread.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you made your own. You had a real hook
- 40:26Speaker 2: and made your own clip. Then Eagle Claw came out.
- 40:29Speaker 2: The kids were doing it, so they did it themselves.
- 40:32Speaker 2: But it was always just what we did. Who started it?
- 40:36Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 40:36Speaker 3: I feel like you made it popular, though. Like, you
- 40:38Speaker 3: should take some real credit for that.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe, you know, I could have. But I remember
- 40:42Speaker 2: when I was a kid, you know, a lot of
- 40:45Speaker 2: the farm kids, a lot of them did it. And
- 40:48Speaker 2: it signified... Back then, if you were fishing a lot,
- 40:51Speaker 2: you were a kid that fished. What were you guys
- 40:53Speaker 2: fishing for back then? Catfish? Oh, man. Bullheads. Bullheads. Carp.
- 40:58Speaker 3: City ponds.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Cricks. You know, anything. Anything you could get on. Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 3: What about get her done? Where'd that come from?
- 41:06Speaker 2: Get her done. When I was a kid, we'd go
- 41:09Speaker 2: to my grandpa's house. So I was probably four or
- 41:13Speaker 2: five years old. But my grandpa, he'd always say, we
- 41:16Speaker 2: get in the pickup truck. And we'd either go get
- 41:19Speaker 2: gas or go check the cows. And it was, let's go.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Let's get to getting.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And then get it done.
- 41:27Speaker 5: We got to go get it done.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Let's go. We're going to get to getting. So those
- 41:33Speaker 2: phrases were always in my head. I didn't think much
- 41:36Speaker 2: of it. But when I did, when I started– I
- 41:41Speaker 2: started doing Larry the Cable Guy on stage as just
- 41:43Speaker 2: a little funny three-minute bit. Because I always did voices
- 41:46Speaker 2: and characters. It was fun.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Like, you would go from your, in a normal set,
- 41:50Speaker 1: you'd jump in to be in Larry.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I'd go, hey, this guy ever come over to your house? Hi. Hi.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Did you order cable? That guy was somebody's order time
- 42:01Speaker 2: up here. Because we ain't here for no reason. What's
- 42:04Speaker 2: your house number? 2070.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Oh, dadgummit.
- 42:08Speaker 2: This is 2614.
- 42:08Speaker 3: We way off.
- 42:11Speaker 4: You know, that kind of thing.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Hey, Pedro!
- 42:13Speaker 2: Pedro!
- 42:14Speaker 1: Then you'd go back out of it.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they would laugh, and then I'd just
- 42:18Speaker 2: go back into a regular routine. Yeah, I see. But
- 42:20Speaker 2: a buddy of mine saw that. His name is Ron Bennington.
- 42:23Speaker 2: We were really good friends back in the day. And
- 42:28Speaker 2: he had a morning show in Tampa called the Ron
- 42:31Speaker 2: and Ron Show. And so he said, man, we need
- 42:33Speaker 2: characters over there. One night at the Comedy Corner in
- 42:35Speaker 2: West Palm Beach, we got to talk and laugh and
- 42:38Speaker 2: have fun. You should call our show and do that character.
- 42:40Speaker 2: That's so funny. So I remember I called up, and
- 42:43Speaker 2: I didn't even have a name. I just called up
- 42:46Speaker 2: and I go, hey. I remember when I called. Hello, YNF.
- 42:54Speaker 4: I literally started like this.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Hey, boys.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Y'all want me to do that hookup today, or you
- 43:01Speaker 4: want me to wait until tomorrow?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Well, we're on the air right now. Oh, shoot, you
- 43:05Speaker 2: hear this?
- 43:06Speaker 5: Dadgummit.
- 43:08Speaker 2: No, no, who is it? It's Cable Guy. Oh, yeah, Ronnie,
- 43:11Speaker 2: remember we wanted to put Cable in. Oh, yeah, Cable Guy. Well,
- 43:15Speaker 2: what's your name? Larry. The first thing I thought of
- 43:19Speaker 2: was my buddy with his belt with Larry on the back, right?
- 43:23Speaker 2: And so I just said, Larry, and the rest is
- 43:25Speaker 2: radio history. I'm not lying.
- 43:28Speaker 4: God is good.
- 43:28Speaker 2: That's how it works.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Are there some characters who didn't survive?
- 43:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Well, I did an old lady from Boca Raton.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Her name was Rose.
- 43:40Speaker 4: Sometimes it was Rose. Sometimes it was Iris.
- 43:42Speaker 2: This is Iris.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Hello.
- 43:44Speaker 7: I love your program. We've been listening down here in Boca.
- 43:49Speaker 7: Just a wonderful program. My husband is in the hospital.
- 43:54Speaker 7: He drove the truck through Publix.
- 43:57Speaker 2: You know, just that.
- 43:58Speaker 4: You know, because you had that just down there.
- 44:01Speaker 2: And then there was.
- 44:01Speaker 1: That doesn't have the range.
- 44:03Speaker 2: There was old man. I love you. You know, just
- 44:07Speaker 2: all kinds of stuff. So when I would go into
- 44:10Speaker 2: a morning show, I was part of a morning show
- 44:12Speaker 2: down in Orlando. I would keep a phone there. And
- 44:15Speaker 2: all I did was pick it up and the main
- 44:18Speaker 2: line would ring. And so he, hey, we're getting a call.
- 44:21Speaker 2: And then my buddy would pick it up.
- 44:23Speaker 5: And I'd be like, hey, that last caller, I agree
- 44:25Speaker 5: with him.
- 44:26Speaker 4: And I would just do voices.
- 44:28Speaker 2: It was fun. And you know what's crazy about that?
- 44:30Speaker 2: The first time I was on Jimmy Kimmel, we went
- 44:34Speaker 2: to a commercial. He goes, hey, you don't know this,
- 44:36Speaker 2: but you and I started pretty much the same way.
- 44:40Speaker 2: I go, what do you mean? He goes, well, you
- 44:42Speaker 2: were doing characters... on 95YNF, right, in Tampa. I go, yeah,
- 44:47Speaker 2: he goes, so funny. I literally was calling the radio
- 44:52Speaker 2: station across the street doing characters for that radio station. Oh, seriously?
- 44:57Speaker 5: I'm like, no way, really?
- 44:58Speaker 2: And I was recently on Adam Carolla's show, and Adam says, yeah,
- 45:02Speaker 2: you know, me and Jimmy, we used to call radio
- 45:07Speaker 2: stations and do characters, so we all kind of started
- 45:09Speaker 2: the same way.
- 45:10Speaker 4: I'm like, wow, that's crazy.
- 45:11Speaker 2: I had no idea.
- 45:13Speaker 4: But, yeah, that's pretty much how it started.
- 45:15Speaker 1: We got a guy we work with, a dear friend
- 45:18Speaker 1: of mine and longtime colleague, and as he gets older,
- 45:21Speaker 1: he's gone through two transitions where he's taken to running
- 45:26Speaker 1: 100-mile races through the mountains.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And somehow, I feel like it's related, but maybe not,
- 45:32Speaker 1: he's begun to go sleeveless.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. Best way to go. Now, if you imagined....
- 45:41Speaker 1: Like, if you're going to provide advice to a guy
- 45:43Speaker 1: going sleeveless, late 40s, going sleeveless, what are some of
- 45:49Speaker 1: the mistakes a guy like that could make? What are
- 45:51Speaker 1: some of the wins you could have?
- 45:53Speaker 2: Well, going sleeveless is the greatest thing you'll ever do
- 45:56Speaker 2: in your life. Wow. My going sleeveless as far as
- 46:01Speaker 2: stage was an accident. You just forgot your sleeve? No,
- 46:05Speaker 2: it was an accident because I did wear– I moved
- 46:10Speaker 2: to Florida. Uh-huh.
- 46:11Speaker 4: So I wore sleeveless t-shirts and cause.
- 46:16Speaker 2: It's hot and humid all the time. I'd only wear
- 46:18Speaker 2: sleeves if I was going, I'd go to school or
- 46:20Speaker 2: had to do, you know? Uh, and then when I
- 46:23Speaker 2: did stand up, that's when I'd go on stage in
- 46:27Speaker 2: a flannel shirt. Okay. Okay. And I dressed up and
- 46:31Speaker 2: I picked flannel shirt because it hangs or, you know, I'm,
- 46:35Speaker 2: I'm not like best shape guy.
- 46:37Speaker 5: I was a lot thinner then, but you know, I
- 46:40Speaker 5: wasn't fat.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I was, you know, big bone. But that shirt, a
- 46:45Speaker 2: flannel shirt, really hangs nice. Got it. It looks good.
- 46:50Speaker 2: It makes your butt look good.
- 46:52Speaker 1: You were thinking about your, like, your svelte appearance.
- 46:55Speaker 4: I was 30 years old.
- 46:58Speaker 2: So whatever it was.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Well, you know, they just look good.
- 47:01Speaker 2: I understand. Yeah. Well, I did wear sleeves, but when
- 47:05Speaker 2: it was summertime, I wouldn't. I would wear no sleeves
- 47:08Speaker 2: because then in the summer when it's hot, I'd wear sleeves.
- 47:10Speaker 2: And when I would travel around the country, it was cold,
- 47:12Speaker 2: I'd put sleeves on. Got it. Well, we just happened
- 47:14Speaker 2: to film Blue Collar TV, the first one, and it
- 47:17Speaker 2: was flipping hot. It was in Phoenix, and I had
- 47:19Speaker 2: no sleeves on. I said, I'll put my other shirt on.
- 47:22Speaker 2: I knew it was TV taping, so I wanted to look.
- 47:25Speaker 2: I'm not wearing sleeves. So I didn't wear sleeves. So
- 47:28Speaker 2: every time I did a show after that, people would go,
- 47:31Speaker 2: if I had sleeves, they'd go, dude.
- 47:34Speaker 5: We wore a shirt with no sleeves. Where's your, you
- 47:36Speaker 5: got sleeves. Well, I'll go change.
- 47:38Speaker 3: So I'd go change, you know?
- 47:40Speaker 2: So I just went sleeveless on stage. But going sleeveless
- 47:43Speaker 2: is the greatest free thing of all time.
- 47:47Speaker 3: You're a good ambassador for the lifestyle.
- 47:49Speaker 2: And the only, here's the thing about it. There's really
- 47:51Speaker 2: no rule to it. You just want to, you don't
- 47:55Speaker 2: get one that's too tight.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Cause that's, that's a whole different look, man.
- 47:59Speaker 2: It defeats the whole purpose of the sleeve. That's a
- 48:01Speaker 2: whole different look. It hangs and, is comfortable because it's
- 48:04Speaker 2: not touching your sides. You're free with your arms. And it's,
- 48:11Speaker 2: you know, and you have two different sleeveless looks. You
- 48:15Speaker 2: have the sleeveless shorts look for the spring and summer.
- 48:22Speaker 2: And then once it turns cold in the fall and
- 48:24Speaker 2: the winter, you have your sleeveless shirt and your... warmer shorts.
- 48:33Speaker 2: You know what I mean? The more material.
- 48:37Speaker 5: The thick shorts. Every fat guy's.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Got a thick pair of shorts and a non-thick pair
- 48:42Speaker 2: of shorts for when the weather changes. You always wear
- 48:46Speaker 2: the same. Where are we at right now in the calendar?
- 48:51Speaker 1: It's October. He's hot weather sleeveless right now.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Right now I'm hot weather sleeveless.
- 48:56Speaker 5: I'm kind of a cool.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I wore sleeves up here because there's kids down there.
- 49:02Speaker 2: So as soon as I walk by and I hear, hey,
- 49:04Speaker 2: there's Mater, then I'm stuck. So I zipped up there.
- 49:07Speaker 2: So for you to.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Go incognito is to have sleeves.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 49:12Speaker 2: For me to not get recognized, I got to dress
- 49:15Speaker 2: with sleeves.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Because a lot of guys go sleeveless to get recognized,
- 49:18Speaker 1: but you got to go sleeve. yeah you gotta go
- 49:21Speaker 1: sleeves under the radar yeah i wear.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Sleeves to not get recognized yeah and you know it's
- 49:27Speaker 2: really funny one time i wanted to go when we
- 49:29Speaker 2: were on the road when my in my heyday when
- 49:31Speaker 2: we were doing you know arenas i mean nate brigatti
- 49:35Speaker 2: crap we all did it you know and uh But
- 49:39Speaker 2: back in those days, I remember I wanted to go
- 49:43Speaker 2: out to eat. My wife was there and we're all
- 49:45Speaker 2: out on the buses and, and they were going to
- 49:48Speaker 2: this really good restaurant. And I'm like, I mean, I
- 49:51Speaker 2: literally couldn't go anywhere. I mean, it was crazy in 2005,
- 49:55Speaker 2: six and seven. And it was nuts, you know? And then, uh,
- 49:59Speaker 2: so my buddy goes, Hey, you should buy the jogging suit.
- 50:03Speaker 2: They bought you for a joke. I go, what? Yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 2: it's a good idea. So somebody who bought me a
- 50:10Speaker 2: Nike full jogging suit, like you'd see a mobster wear
- 50:16Speaker 2: back in the day. So I put on the mobster
- 50:20Speaker 2: jogging suit, and I had my hat on backwards and
- 50:23Speaker 2: a pair of sunglasses, and we go to this restaurant.
- 50:26Speaker 2: We're waiting in line, just waiting in line. Nobody said,
- 50:30Speaker 2: this is great. I look like an idiot, but this
- 50:33Speaker 2: is great.
- 50:34Speaker 3: As opposed to normally, you don't look like an idiot.
- 50:38Speaker 1: It looks like a brilliant young guy normally.
- 50:40Speaker 2: You know what, just for that, I'm farting on the
- 50:42Speaker 2: set right now, just because you said that. I'll sit
- 50:45Speaker 2: the guy. Some guy goes, hold on. Some guy in
- 50:49Speaker 2: front of me nudges me and goes, you Larry the
- 50:53Speaker 2: Cable Guy? And I go, yeah, don't tell anybody. He goes.
- 51:00Speaker 2: What are you wearing next? I was trying not to
- 51:03Speaker 2: get recognized. He goes, well, take it off. You look
- 51:08Speaker 2: like an idiot. I said, I agree. And then we
- 51:12Speaker 2: both laughed and that was it.
- 51:14Speaker 1: See, I was going to tell you about it. I
- 51:16Speaker 1: was going to tell you about a public figure and
- 51:19Speaker 1: what they do when they're, I can't do it. A
- 51:22Speaker 1: public figure the other day was sharing with me a
- 51:26Speaker 1: very simple move he does to never get recognized.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:31Speaker 1: When he's out and about, but go on.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Act like he pees.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I don't want to blow his deal, you know?
- 51:37Speaker 2: Act like he pees his pants or something. Brian Haley,
- 51:41Speaker 2: my buddy Brian Haley, a comedian, is so funny. He
- 51:43Speaker 2: looks like Max Hedren. He used to do a joke
- 51:46Speaker 2: about walking at home after comedy clubs in bad parts
- 51:50Speaker 2: of town. He goes, I found a way that they'll
- 51:52Speaker 2: never bother you. First thing you do is you wet
- 51:55Speaker 2: your pants. And then you walk home like this. He
- 51:57Speaker 2: started doing high kicks.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Going, ding dong, ding dong.
- 52:01Speaker 2: He goes, they'll never come near you.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Kept him away.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Dan, I used to watch your show Only in America
- 52:08Speaker 3: on History Channel.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Oh, good show.
- 52:09Speaker 3: The thing I was most jealous of, you got to
- 52:11Speaker 3: do so much cool stuff.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Oh, it's unbelievable.
- 52:13Speaker 3: I felt like I saw you break character one time
- 52:15Speaker 3: because you were so giddy when you were with some
- 52:18Speaker 3: game wardens in Alaska who set up a moose decoy
- 52:21Speaker 3: off the highway. And then you saw somebody shoot it.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Yeah. One of my favorite episodes. Alaska was awesome. But
- 52:29Speaker 2: we set this decoy up. And it was the dumbest
- 52:32Speaker 2: looking decoy. And I'm thinking, there's no way somebody's going
- 52:35Speaker 2: to think this. And, of course, the guy I was
- 52:38Speaker 2: with was kind of goofy himself, the game word guy.
- 52:41Speaker 2: So he was fun, you know. So we set this
- 52:43Speaker 2: thing up. And I'm making jokes like, yeah, nobody's.
- 52:46Speaker 5: I mean, look at this.
- 52:47Speaker 2: It looks like it was the dumbest thing you've ever
- 52:50Speaker 2: seen right on the side of the road. Well, first
- 52:52Speaker 2: of all, now we have to go sit. So we
- 52:54Speaker 2: sit in the guy's car. waiting for somebody to shoot
- 52:57Speaker 2: this stupid thing. And by gosh, people would drive.
- 53:00Speaker 4: And then slow down.
- 53:02Speaker 2: You see, oh no, they're going by. So after about
- 53:04Speaker 2: the 15th car that slowed down, I go, I told
- 53:07Speaker 2: you they're not going to believe that's the dumbest thing
- 53:09Speaker 2: I ever seen in my life. I look and some
- 53:12Speaker 2: guy stops, gets out of his truck and we see
- 53:15Speaker 2: him pulling a rifle out. And I go, you gotta
- 53:18Speaker 2: be kidding me. Really? This guy?
- 53:22Speaker 3: And he goes, you hear, he goes, He shot.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 53:31Speaker 3: The car.
- 53:34Speaker 2: The car won't start. And I'm like, well, this has
- 53:37Speaker 2: to be the dumbest stake I've ever been on in
- 53:39Speaker 2: my life. We finally get it started. We go down there. Yeah.
- 53:42Speaker 4: And the guy actually.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Because they can do that down there.
- 53:45Speaker 5: You can shoot on the side of the road.
- 53:48Speaker 2: If you see one, you just got to make sure
- 53:50Speaker 2: you're on the side of the road safely.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Can't shoot from, across, or whatever road.
- 53:54Speaker 2: No, because they live on that.
- 53:56Speaker 4: They are all appointed.
- 53:58Speaker 2: They all can get one per family, I guess, and
- 54:00Speaker 2: something like that. And so then we went down there,
- 54:03Speaker 2: but I thought the funniest part of the whole thing
- 54:04Speaker 2: was we let him go, just give him a warning
- 54:07Speaker 2: because we're doing the show. And I go, later on,
- 54:10Speaker 2: Robert was seen down at the JCPenney's hitting on a mannequin.
- 54:18Speaker 3: I'm impressed you never forget a joke.
- 54:21Speaker 2: No, because that was funny. You know them all. I'll
- 54:23Speaker 2: never forget that, that that guy shot it, that stupid joke.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Dude, they got sophisticated ones. Now, we interviewed a guy
- 54:30Speaker 1: in Idaho that worked on that program.
- 54:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 54:32Speaker 1: And they got him to turn their head now. He
- 54:35Speaker 1: was telling me that you can't use too big of
- 54:41Speaker 1: a buck. If you use a giant buck, it enters
- 54:45Speaker 1: into this whole, like, basically, like, entrapment. Or you've created
- 54:49Speaker 1: a situation of just outstanding circumstance. That no sane person, right?
- 54:56Speaker 1: would be able to resist, so you need to use
- 54:58Speaker 1: a more modest buck.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Wow.
- 55:00Speaker 1: But I can't remember if that was... I need to
- 55:02Speaker 1: go revisit why exactly that was the case. Because I'd
- 55:05Speaker 1: put a huge buck, and that'd get all the guys
- 55:07Speaker 1: driving by. You'd get every guy that drove by.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Dan's episode had a big bull moose, but
- 55:12Speaker 3: you could see where the neck met the body. It
- 55:15Speaker 3: was like... And I think... I remember somebody even pulling
- 55:18Speaker 3: over to your vehicle and being like, did you guys
- 55:20Speaker 3: know there's a mannequin in the woods over there? Like
- 55:22Speaker 3: it was, it was that obvious.
- 55:24Speaker 2: It was, it.
- 55:25Speaker 4: Was so pathetic, but it made for a funny show.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Yeah. That was the point of the show. Yeah.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Uh, I also loved Blair, the cable guy roast on
- 55:33Speaker 3: comedy central is one of the most watched ones they've
- 55:35Speaker 3: ever had. Who do you think did the best job
- 55:37Speaker 3: of roasting you?
- 55:39Speaker 2: Oh man, that was, uh, they were all good.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Um, was there anybody who was too mean?
- 55:47Speaker 1: Yeah, that's gotta be a hard position to be in, man.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Getting roasted by people.
- 55:51Speaker 2: That are good at roasting. Greg Geraldo was mean. But
- 55:53Speaker 2: you gotta understand, when I did that roast, I was
- 55:55Speaker 2: the number one guy. So the number one guy's always
- 55:59Speaker 2: the target. You know? Especially a one-liner guy like me and,
- 56:04Speaker 2: you know, doing a character and, you know, like Scott Tom,
- 56:08Speaker 2: like Carrot Top. Carrot Top's been a punching bag forever.
- 56:11Speaker 2: And Carrot Top is hilarious. He's clever. One of the
- 56:14Speaker 2: nicest comics in the world. but you know, people think
- 56:17Speaker 2: pie shots. So that was when I was, so yeah,
- 56:20Speaker 2: some of the, so there was a couple of roasters
- 56:23Speaker 2: that they, matter of fact, Greg Geraldo came out to
- 56:25Speaker 2: me after the podcast backstage and he goes, he literally said,
- 56:30Speaker 2: he goes, Hey Dan, I hope you look, um, I
- 56:35Speaker 2: hope you're not mad at some of those jokes. And
- 56:38Speaker 2: I just, uh, but, You know, and I'm not mad
- 56:41Speaker 2: at you. I'm mad at myself because I should be
- 56:45Speaker 2: one of the guys. I should be getting roasted. I
- 56:47Speaker 2: should have the career you have.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Wow.
- 56:49Speaker 2: But I don't have because of myself because I can't.
- 56:53Speaker 2: I do this and I do that and I know
- 56:55Speaker 2: I shouldn't do. He was just going into his life basically. Huh.
- 56:59Speaker 2: And so he goes, so I hope you're not, I
- 57:01Speaker 2: don't want to look, you're a nice guy and I
- 57:03Speaker 2: don't hope you're not mad at me. But when I
- 57:05Speaker 2: was venting up there, I was more venting at myself
- 57:09Speaker 2: than I was at you.
- 57:10Speaker 4: I say, Greg, I know what it is. It's a roast, man.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I can take a joke. I get it. No hard feelings.
- 57:17Speaker 2: I was laughing. It's all good.
- 57:19Speaker 3: So, so it was an awkward ending.
- 57:21Speaker 2: It was good. Well, it was good. I mean, I
- 57:23Speaker 2: knew I was going to get it from a couple
- 57:25Speaker 2: of those guys, but If you're going to be a comedian,
- 57:28Speaker 2: you got to take it. I don't really, but I've never,
- 57:31Speaker 2: like all my stuff is just nonsense stuff. I don't
- 57:33Speaker 2: really pound or bang other comedians or anything. Sure, yeah.
- 57:37Speaker 2: You know, but I think Jeff was, I'm always going
- 57:41Speaker 2: to say Jeff because Jeff is like my adopted older brother.
- 57:45Speaker 4: But Jeff was classy and he was funny and he
- 57:47Speaker 4: was clever.
- 57:48Speaker 2: And that was what I wanted. That was good. You know,
- 57:51Speaker 2: Toby did a good job, Toby Keith. The thing about
- 57:54Speaker 2: that was, I knew what they were like and I
- 57:57Speaker 2: didn't want my mom watching. Oh, so I requested certain
- 58:03Speaker 2: comedians that I wanted and I wanted it PG 13.
- 58:08Speaker 2: I said, I want to do a throwback to the
- 58:11Speaker 2: Dean Martin roasts because I grew up with the Dean
- 58:14Speaker 2: Martin roasts. So Jeff and I, Dan Marino and Dan
- 58:18Speaker 2: Marino had to end up canceling out. And, and then
- 58:22Speaker 2: of course, uh, Marsha Bray, Maureen McCormick was there. I
- 58:27Speaker 2: didn't ask for Maureen McCormick. And Greg Giraldo, the guy
- 58:30Speaker 2: to have because he's always there. Jeff Ross, who's a
- 58:34Speaker 2: buddy of mine. I love Jeff. I'm glad Jeff was.
- 58:36Speaker 2: But there were a few people that I didn't know.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Like Warren Sapp. I know Warren. I didn't invite Warren.
- 58:41Speaker 2: But Dan Marino could make it, so Warren Sapp took
- 58:44Speaker 2: his place, which was nice. I know him, so he
- 58:47Speaker 2: wanted to do it because I knew him.
- 58:48Speaker 3: And did your mom watch it?
- 58:50Speaker 2: Uh i don't think so i told her not to
- 58:52Speaker 2: okay i felt bad after i did it you know.
- 58:55Speaker 8: Oh it's got me though i can't imagine and i'll
- 58:59Speaker 8: tell you what and i'm not a mean like so
- 59:03Speaker 8: they you know they write you jokes and then you
- 59:06Speaker 8: if you want to come up with some you can
- 59:08Speaker 8: but there's so many people so i just relied on I.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Take that back I did the Warren Sapp one I
- 59:17Speaker 2: did where I said it was Toby Keith and it
- 59:21Speaker 2: was I figure it was Toby Keith and who was
- 59:25Speaker 2: the other I can't remember there was Toby somebody in
- 59:29Speaker 2: Warren Sapp I go, man, they brought all the stars
- 59:31Speaker 2: out tonight. Toby Keith and blah, blah, blah. And look
- 59:34Speaker 2: at that, Aretha Franklin. I remember I did that. But
- 59:38Speaker 2: I felt bad because they wrote, they had a joke.
- 59:42Speaker 2: And I saw, some of them I saw for the
- 59:45Speaker 2: first time. I go, hey, it's nice to have Marsha
- 59:47Speaker 2: Brady here. Man, Marsha Brady, I was in love with
- 59:49Speaker 2: you when I was a kid. You were so beautiful.
- 59:51Speaker 2: What happened? You know, everybody laughed. And in my head,
- 59:55Speaker 2: I'm going, man, that's so mean. Yeah. I like her.
- 59:58Speaker 4: She's a nice girl. She's, you know. Then she went
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: up and hammered me.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: And then I'm like, you know what? Screw her.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you got the first shot.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: Well, yeah, but I didn't.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: I felt bad doing that. I like Maureen McGregor. They
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: had me doing these. Some of them. And then after that,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: they just got real hateful.
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: The Rose really got hateful.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: And mean. You know, when I did it, they were
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: still pretty lighthearted. Yeah. But, man, they had started getting
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: really hateful and mean after a while. Well, I will
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: say I was uncomfortable doing those about Maureen McCormick because
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: I really, she was like, you know, I don't get
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: starstruck by people except for people that I grew up
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: as a little kid. And I always liked the Brady Bunch.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I always liked Maureen McCormick. Here I am bashing her because,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: you know, she's older and doesn't look like she used
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: to look. And that's horrible.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: It's not even funny.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I understand. But I did it.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Tell me about what you're working on now. I know
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: you got this American Mayhem deal coming out. What's that
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: all about?
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: Yeah, American Mayhem is cool.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: You know what? It's just in the vein of America's
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Funniest Home Videos. It's videos that are geared toward me.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: A lot of fallen, a lot of outdoorsy, a lot
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: of rural, a lot of blue-collar type stuff. A lot of, hey, y'all,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: watch this type stuff. I host it. And then they
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: show the videos. There's another guy on there talking about,
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: you know, saying what's happening. Yeah. And then there's one,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: there's a thing called Larry's People where I pick my
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: three favorites. Got it. Because these are my people. I
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: hang out with these people. And so I narrate those
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: and then I close it out. So it's just, It's
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: just me, green screen, and showing funny videos.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: And you're doing a boatload of those.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: We already did.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: We shot 52 episodes. So there'll be one a week
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: now for the next 52 weeks.
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean, it's going all over the country.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: You never know how it's going to go because I premiered,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: you know, in September when football started.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: So it's like, you know. Hey, our team's playing.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but hold on. Larry's on.
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: Let's see Larry for half an hour.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: We'll go back to the first quarter. But I think
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: they air me now. It's at all different times, but generally,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: I'm aired a half an hour before a football game starts.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Get people warmed up.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: Generally, that's how it works.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: And you got more stuff in the cars world, right?
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I got to tell you, too. So I've always known
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: your stand-up.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: But to be....
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: The role that you took on in my household, so
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: I have 11.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: 13, 16. Oh, yeah, you're right there.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Like, listen, I don't want to bother you up too much.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: The Tomator stuff is genius. I mean, it's just like
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: a genius. It's just like an execution of a character.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: But to be like 11, 13, 16.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: The role that Tomator had in my household. I was like,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Tomator has said more words in my household than I have.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh man.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I'm just like a huge favorite of our kids, man.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: I am blown away by that whole thing. I'm so thankful.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: I mean, I would have never thought in a million years,
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: you know, but it just continues to go. Oh, just like,
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: it just makes people happy. Yeah.
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: And I did, I did it right.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: You know, I'm not, Look, I'm not Hollywood at all.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I don't live out there. I don't like... So when
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: they said... I was proud of it. I was proud
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: of Mater breathing life into that little truck. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: And it's close to my personality. It's my personality, really.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: I'm just being me in that thing, but faking the accent.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: But it's just like, man, I would have never thought
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: that it turned into what it turned into. Who would
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: have thought that? So I always do... When they ask me,
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: they'll ask the guys, well... There's video games and toys. Gotcha.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: And they'll say, do you want to voice these? It
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: doesn't pay much, but this is what they're paying. And,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: you know, everybody, oh, I'm not going to do it.
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: You know, I'll do it.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: I don't want nobody else doing it.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I can imagine, man. It'd be like when they got, like,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Remember when you were a kid and they switched Bo
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: and Luke Duke out for those cousins?
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Oh my God. You can't have some other dude do
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: it until Mater.
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: Good luck getting anybody that sounds like me.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: It's a hard deal.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: So I have done every toy, every game, every video game,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: every commercial. Anything where Mater is talking is me. Other
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: than the foreign films. I've done all those things. And
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: so even if they wanted to get somebody else to
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: do it, you would know. Because you would know. Because
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: I have certain inflections. I have a certain sound to it.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: I would know.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Kids would know.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: Kids, people that grew up with Mater and love Mater,
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: if somebody else did it that wasn't me, they would know.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Good job, security.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: And I, you know, and I'm not, but.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Here's the thing. I'm not a jerk and I'm not,
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: I like doing it. So I'm not hard to work with.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, you know what? If you can get more,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: get more. If not, I'll do it. Yeah. So, cause
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: I like doing it. It's fun for me. I like
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: the people I work with, the people in the studio.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: We've done it for years. I just have a good
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: time doing it and it's fun. So yeah, that thing
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: was awesome. But the thing that sucks about it is
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: now whenever they want me to audition to do another
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: cartoon voice, everybody sounds like Maynard.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Oh, I can see that.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, so.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: I can see that, man. You typecat. You typecat. I
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: typecast myself.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm Newman.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Hey, this isn't live, obviously.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: So the truth will be known when this airs.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: So you're in a very awkward position when I ask you,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: what's the score? What's the score going to be?
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Oh, the game? Yeah. Here's the deal.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: So people already know that you're right or wrong.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: I was close last week. I was only three points off.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: I said we'd win 34 to 13. We won 31
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: to 13. Oh, dang. Wow.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Give me as much color, as much detail as you want,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: and then you'll be reality checked.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: Here's the deal.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: I've got that last 10 years in my head.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: The pessimism.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Are we going to blow it? Is this the day?
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Here's what scares me about Maryland. At the beginning of
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: the year, they were supposedly a pretty good team. They've
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: been tanking. They got blown out by UCLA. Some people
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: say UCLA is the best team in the Big Ten.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: I don't know. It's too early. They fired their coach, Maryland.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: But evidently, there were so many people that wanted him
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: back player-wise. Okay, you're not fired, but we're going to
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: go game by game. And if we see improvement. So
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: his team is going to play.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: That's the coach's situation. Yes.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: So that team.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Is going to play really hard for that coach today.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: I'm going to go 45-24. I think they're going to
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: score some points.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: They got a better mascot. They got a better mascot
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: than you guys.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Don't ever say they have a better mascot than Herbie.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: You sound like a South Dakotan now talking about their corn.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Don't we eat terrapins?
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: What is a terrapin?
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I never had one, but they used to be quite popular.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: It's like a little turtle guy.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Corn husker? What's that supposed to mean?
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: 45 husking corn. That's what we do. We husk corn.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: But that's not like a mascot builder.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: We would husk more corn if our soil was better.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Than South Dakota.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: It wasn't so damn sandy.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: I'd change it. 45-17. Okay. Okay. 45-17.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: There you have it. Don't even go back and watch
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: the game because that's what happened. All right.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: All right. Thanks, man. Are we done now? We're done.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: You got friends coming.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: I want to talk more about that.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: You can talk all you want.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: No, I'm only kidding.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: I'll try to be respectful of your time because I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: know you got this whole thing is like filling up
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: with people.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: What time is it? 12.50. Oh, my God. Your friends
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: are coming at one. Well, how long is your podcast?
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: However long we make it.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Can I say one thing?
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: You can say all you want.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: Well, I don't want to go yet.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: I'm trying to end it out of respect for your friends.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: No, no.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: You talk all you want. Okay. They aren't really friends.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: You can send your friends in at your point.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: I literally pay people to hang out with me. Okay, cool.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: So before your employees come in. No, you got as
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: much time as you want.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: I want to tell you this because a lot of,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: I want to let people know this because some people
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: ask me, you didn't.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: How did I come to do Larry the Cable Guy
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: on stage?
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Well, you told us that. No.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: I just told you how good or not.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: No, you said that you would go into a bit
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: or you would do a minute.
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: Yeah, but I was Dan Whitney.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: Yeah, please. All right.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: I want to hear everything. I want to hear all this.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Because I always want to give him credit, okay? So
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: one day, I'm on the radio station. It's real popular.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: I got it copyrighted, selling T-shirts, the whole thing. My buddy.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Off just the radio stuff.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Yes, off the radio stuff.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Not having done it on stage.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: No, all off radio.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: When the radio thing is happening, would you get recognized
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: by your voice out and about in Florida or no?
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Uh... No, not yet, because I'd never made a public appearance.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: Face radio kind of deal. It's all radio. It's all
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: theater of the mind. My buddy, Les McCurdy, McCurdy's Comedy Shop, St. Petersburg, Florida,
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: bills me. Now, I just left this radio station and
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: went to another one in Orlando and got syndicated.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: My buddy, Les McCurdy, goes... I show up.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: It's at the banquet room of the Holiday Inn. That's
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: where his comedy club is. I can't find a place
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: to park. And I'm like, what, they got negative Shriners
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: in town? What's going on, right? You know?
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: So I walk in and go, man, Les. I mean,
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: what's going on?
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: He goes, I can't find a place to park because
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: they're here to see you.
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: I go, I literally, I'm a comedian. I go, What'd
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: I do?
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: When you said he billed you, I thought you meant
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: like he sent you a bill.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: No, he booked me. He goes, I hope you don't mind.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: I know you had a falling out with that radio station,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: but I billed you as Dan Whitney, a.k.a. Larry the
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Cable Guy from the 95 YNAF. And I literally was like, ah, Les...
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: What did you do that for? This is all theater
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: of the mind. I don't have an act for Larry
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: the Cable Guy. He's like, well, it's selling tickets. That's
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: all I know. I go, really?
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: He goes, dude, I announced Larry the Cable Guy, right?
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: You do Larry the Cable Guy. I sold like 600
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: tickets in like 18 minutes. You've got to be kidding me.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: So I go up for the first show, right? doing
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: good you know my actors were one line or goofy
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: doing good but they kept yelling get it on then
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: one guy hey do some larry get it done we
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: want to hear larry got it got it so then
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: i go so i did a couple jokes as larry
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: right i come back out of it i can't freaking
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: get any laughs so i go let me do.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: A little bit more larry here So you.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Switched back to Dan, it would bomb.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, so, well, it wouldn't bomb, but it wasn't, I
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: was killing, I was doing great.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: Harder.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: But what would.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Be a Dan, like, let's say you're in the era
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: where you're doing some Larry.
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: Same jokes.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: You're Dan doing Larry. What would be a Dan joke?
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: Same jokes.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Remember that dog whisper? That would be a Dan joke. Yeah,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: my sister, she's a dog whisperer.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: What's that?
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: That's what I would do. I was more physical.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: I would do more like hitting my knee or acting
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: like I fell down or more of that slapsticky.
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Larry would do better on the joke than Dan.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Larry the cable guy did social commentaries on the radio.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: What the hell is this, Russia? What's going on with
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: these damn, you know? And I would, very politically incorrect,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: total Archie Bunker likable. Not mean, but likable. A guy
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: that had a point to say, but littered it with,
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: you know, poop jokes and that like that, right? Strip clubs,
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But it made a little point. Like,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: the best compliment I ever had was a guy came
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: up to me and goes, hey, I know you're trying
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: to be funny and you're, like, doing these commentaries and
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: you're putting these stupid jokes in there, but if you
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: listen to what you're saying at the end of it, you.
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: Make pretty good points.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: That kind of thing, right?
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that kind of thing.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: So I didn't have any jokes for that.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: So I would just, I was doing great until somebody yelled,
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: get her done.
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: And then I did a joke that I normally would
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: do as Larry. And ah! Doubled the laugh. And then
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: I go back into me.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: I was still getting good laughs, but they wanted to
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: hear more Larry. So I get done. And then the
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: next show, Les comes up to me and goes, hey,
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: You ever thought about doing your whole show as Larry
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: the Cable Guy?
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: I go, Les, I don't want to have an act
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: for Larry.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Well, just do what you did. Do your act.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Switch the whole damn thing over.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: So what I had to do was, I was fast. Fast.
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: Larry's slow, meticulous, drawn out. What took me eight seconds
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: to tell a punchline, Larry... the character tells the same punchline,
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: but double the time.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: You don't need to have as many jokes.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Good for you, too.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: It's economical.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Like, I do a joke about it. Like,
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: this would be one of my jokes. Man, I was
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: playing pickleball the other day. Oh, man, I was playing pickleball.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: That's why I'm walking weird. I threw out my pickle.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: And then laugh after. Larry would be like, well, y'all
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: didn't play pickleball? I was playing pickleball the other day,
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: and daggum, throwed my pickle out. You believe that?
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: Daggum pickle. Come right out the shorts.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: You know, just like that.
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: That's better. Yes, it's hilarious.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: The way it is said makes it funny. That's what
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: Foxworthy and Engvall always said to me. Jeff would always say.
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: I don't know why that joke's funny. It's the way
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: you tell the joke that makes it funny.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a... You remember... Jerry Clower.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: He's like a forebear almost. He had said, Jerry Clower
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: had once said, I don't tell funny stories. I tell
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: stories funny.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: Yes, exactly. So it's how you tell it.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: So he said, Les goes, can you talk like that
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: for an hour?
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: And I told him.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: I go, Les. I grew up on a daggum pig
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: farm in southeast Nebraska. All my friends, I went to
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: college in Georgia. I said, all I do is hang
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: out in country bars all the time. I can talk
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: like a redneck all day long. I was talking like
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: a redneck before I come here, hanging out with my
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: buddy Brad, because that's how he talked. I said, hey,
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: no problem. He says, well, I'm going to take your
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: name off. Just put Larry the Cable Guy up there.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: I said, all right, I'm going to go change. And
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: I had pants, you know, I had a nice shirt,
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: not a nice shirt, but I had a button down on,
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: you know. And I went to the car and I said,
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: this is going to be awesome. I don't even have
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: to flip it. I hate dressing up. No.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: Because I wore sleeveless stuff.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: I go to the car, which, by the way, if
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: anybody thinks I'm faking it, I drove over in my car.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: a 1986 Trans Am with T-tops with a big old
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: blue bird that I just was so proud I had
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: painted on the front of it. And I changed, and
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: I put on my lace-up, a Ropers, pair of jeans,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: a Nebraska Cornhusker sleeveless T-shirt.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: And a NASCAR hat.
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: That's exactly what.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I drove over.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: So you put your clothes back on.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I put my clothes, I took off my show clothes
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: and put my driving clothes back on. And I went
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: on stage and it was so fun. And I was
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: making myself laugh. I never had more fun in my
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: life doing standup. then doing what I was doing, watching
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: them laugh, but then adding things, because stuff just comes
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: to you, because you're so into the character.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: And then you're just adding stuff.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: I would laugh on stage a couple times, and then
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: I'd tell them, oh man, that's funny, I don't care
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: who you are, I just put myself laughing on that one.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: And then I would write it down so I would remember.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: And that's how it started. I want to tell you
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: that's how it started, because that's how it started, right there.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: What is it like, let's take the....
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: All the cars stuff, right?
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Like, like just hugely popular and influenced just kid after
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: kid after kid for the longest time and adults.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: But in the title, I've got in the title, I
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: literally have a milk dud fart about to come out.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I apologize, but I, it may come out. I've been
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: trying to hold it.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Is this Dan or Larry? That's a, that's farting.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: No, it's Dan. As many milk duds as I eat,
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: it might be both of us. As you wrestle with that.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Do you ever if you see like in the credits
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: it says larry the cable guy yeah is there like
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: a degree of separation or is that just you.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: No let me tell you i'm glad that we extended
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: this a few minutes yeah that bugs me a little
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: but at the time when i did cars i wanted dan.
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: Whitney you did yes hmm They.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Wanted Larry the Cable Guy name because it was a brand.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: At that point in my career, I was just a stand-up.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I don't know about all the movies. All this stuff,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: they brought to me. I didn't ask for it. They
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: would bring it to me. So it's like my manager
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: said one time, because you can't use your, like when
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: I did my first movie, it's like you can't use
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: your first name.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, people would be like, who the hell is that?
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: I don't know who you are.
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: Here's the thing. Dan, here's the thing. You're a brand now.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: It's a brand.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Get her done. Larry the Cable Guy is a brand.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: So everything you do has to be under this brand.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: I'm like, okay. So everything's under that brand. So now
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: I kind of wish there was a few things it
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: would be, especially when people give me stuff. Like I
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: got like the coolest thing from, like I do a
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: lot of stuff with the troops. Right. And I got
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: this distinguished service thing for the army. Like I did
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: stuff for the guard and everything.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: And it says, Oh, It says, to Larry the Cable Guy.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: It's like, oh, what the?
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: That felt like a Dan thing, man.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Well, some people, some of those things like that do
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: say Dan Whitney. But there's some things that I wish
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: they didn't say that I got from the troops or
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: I got from a hospital.
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: You got a jersey around the corner.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: Those are cool things. And when they put Larry the
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: Cable Guy, I'm thinking, well, I get it. I get it.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: I'm Larry. I get it. But sometimes it's like, oh,
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: I just wish you'd put my real name on it,
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: because I created this thing.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: When you die, man, you might need to get one
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: of them double, like, you know how they see the
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Ten Commandments on the two stone tablets?
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: When you die, you get a double headstone.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I should.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Dan and Larry.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: Absolutely. And, of course, this stone will be nicer than mine.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: He's got all the money.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: One stone will say he got her done.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Got her done, got her did.
- 1:20:30Speaker 5: Get her done, got her did.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: That's what it is.
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: Cable guy is also kind of an old-timey reference by now.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: I imagine kids, they're like, what's a cable guy?
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: I never even thought of that.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, no, yeah.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: It'd be like me trying to explain stuff to my
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: kids from not that long ago.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, when I was a kid, man, you
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: went to do the phone.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: You went.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: They can't even understand what.
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: I'm talking about. They don't even need to know. You
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: know what?
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: I have no idea.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: It's like one of those things that's just stuck. It
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: doesn't even mean anything anymore. It's just... You know, it's
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: like Cedric the Entertainer. You know? Larry the Cable Guy.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: I mean, it's just.
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: It doesn't even.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: occur to me about being a cable installer.
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: It's just like it's Larry the Cable.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: You kind of forgot that detail.
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: It makes no sense. And I got irritated at DirecTV
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: one time because they were running those commercials with celebrities.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: You know? Stupid. I can't remember.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: What commercials?
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: DirecTV was running a commercial with.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: That actor, that real good-looking actor back in the day.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: That one. What's his name? He was part of the troupe. The...
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: You know what I'm talking about? He was in, what
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: was the, I can't remember his name. Anyway, he was
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: a good looking, they were running commercials with him. He
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: was a good looking guy. Yeah, I can't remember.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: And the first thing.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Your friends are trying to break in.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: I know. They might just wave. The first thing that
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: I thought was, why don't they get me? Larry the
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: Cable Guy is switching to DirecTV.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Oh, dude, that would have been genius.
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: It would have been huge!
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Larry the DirecTV guy.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: And here's what irritates me about corporate. Larry the Cable
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Guy has switched to DirecTV. Yeah. Right?
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: And then I come out, that's right!
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: I'm now Larry the DirecTV guy!
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: Man!
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: And you can get.
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: I mean, it was the perfect sales pitch.
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: Gotta change your business.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: Because at the time, well, Larry the Cable Guy is
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: only really... for one part of the country, you know,
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: because of the Southern accent. And sometimes he says things
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: that are a little controversial. Meanwhile, you got fricking rappers,
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: you know, singing about killing cops and fricking, you know,
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: with women. You know what I mean?
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: No, I know exactly what you mean.
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: They're getting all kinds of corporate stuff.
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: I'm like going, how am I controversial when you got,
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: you know what I mean?
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: What's his name? Who's the guy? What's that one rapper
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: that's always out? Snoop Dogg. Yeah.
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: I got nothing against Snoop Dogg.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Dude, he's become like a national spokesperson.
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: God bless Snoop Dogg.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: He's done a good job. I'm sure he's a nice guy.
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: But I didn't say, you know? And somebody even asked him.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: One time, do you apologize now for some of the
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: things you said about? No, man, because I'll.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: Tell you this.
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: And he was like, he doubled down.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: But you were controversial.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: And next thing you know, two Super Bowl commercials. Meanwhile,
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: you know, I'm like.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: Don't get me started.
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: That just gets frustrating.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: That would have been the perfect direct TV commercial. 100%.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: There's a lot of hypocrisy in corporate, who they get
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: and who they don't get. Look, I've had a good career.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: I ain't worried about it.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: But I'm just saying, that DirecTV pissed me off.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that was a missed opportunity.
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Could have been you.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: But listen, Snoop Dogg, he ain't no Tomator, though, man.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: He ain't no Tomator.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: And look, I don't say that. I love everybody. And
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: I'm happy for everybody's career. I'm not like, I'm not
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: mad at them. I'm upset at the corporations that would
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: say you're too controversial, but then they'll put somebody else
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: that's even way more controversial.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: You know what I mean? We need to find that
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: DirecTV person, the exec or whatever agency they use, and
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: we need to say, in hindsight, In hindsight, do you
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: recognize the missed opportunity? And maybe you'll get the comeuppance
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: you deserve. But you'll say, every night as I'm going
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: to bed, I think about that I didn't cast Larry,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: the DirecTV guy.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: They're never going to do it.
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: No, thanks for having me on, guys. Sorry, I wanted
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: to tell you that story, though, because I think that's important.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: Oh, I love the story. A lot of people don't
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: know how I started doing it on stage. That's how
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: I did it.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: That's a great story.
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: Excited for the game.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to have to ask you to get
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: out of here.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: These dudes are looking in from that window now.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: I know, I know. They think we're doing a Husker show.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: All right, man, thank you very much.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for having me. You guys are hanging for.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: The game, right? Yep. All right. All right, take it easy.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: And we got hot dogs.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: Get her that!
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: Thank you.
