- 0:00Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave the
- 0:03Movie Talk Show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:05self. We're wearing the Movies Now.
- 0:09Well played. Hello and welcome to Off the
- 0:12Shelf with Phil and Dave, the Movie Talk Show where each week
- 0:14one of us takes a movie off our shelf.
- 0:16Very good. Hello and welcome to Off the
- 0:22Shelf with Phil and Dave, the Movie Talk Show where each week
- 0:25one of us takes a movie off our shelf, presents it to the other,
- 0:28and discusses it at length. This week we've got coming off
- 0:37of Dave's shelf, 1988's The Naked Gun from the files of
- 0:42Police Squad, starring Leslie Nielsen, of course, directed by
- 0:46Zucker, directed by David Zucker, written by Jerry and
- 0:50David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, who I have to tell you, for a
- 0:54very long time, JJ Abrams was, I thought it was.
- 0:58Jim Abrams. I thought it was Zucker.
- 1:01Abrams and Zucker as the Zazz team.
- 1:04And I'm. I'm wrong.
- 1:06It's Abrahams. There it is, plain and simple.
- 1:08So here it is, David. We're here.
- 1:09One more week on the couch. We are.
- 1:12What brought this movie off your shelf and why now?
- 1:16Good question, Philip I. Don't care how you're doing this
- 1:17week, by the way. I hope you noticed.
- 1:19Clearly that's good. Moved on.
- 1:21I'm going to. I'm going to use a term.
- 1:23It's not politically correct. OK, I.
- 1:25Probably shouldn't say. It get some likes, maybe we get
- 1:27some. But I'm going to anyway, I'm a
- 1:29little slow. OK, Yeah.
- 1:31Right my I have the reactive time, I have the reaction.
- 1:35There it is. I have the reaction time of a
- 1:39turtle. OK, physically, mentally me.
- 1:42What's your refraction time? That's maybe a little.
- 1:44More don't even have one. Don't even have one.
- 1:46That's one and done, yeah. Now except for the snapping
- 1:48turtle. OK, don't mess with those, OK?
- 1:52They're quick. But Naked Gun, whatever it's
- 1:55called, just came out a couple of months ago.
- 1:58Yeah, the Naked Gun, I believe. As soon as I caught wind that
- 2:01that movie was coming out, we could have done this one to
- 2:05align better with its theatrical or streaming or release.
- 2:10Whatever one it was, it was actually theatrical this time.
- 2:12But yes, it was OK. I think it's already available.
- 2:14Could be to rent on Prime when I went to look for this one, but
- 2:18nonetheless, here we are. We're still going to do it a
- 2:22couple months later. Sure.
- 2:23Timeless it it is. That's a question I'll have for
- 2:26you later, but is this timeless? Yep.
- 2:30Yep. And we hadn't done a parody film
- 2:32yet. No, been a while since we've
- 2:34done a comedy in general. Correct.
- 2:36Yeah. Haven't dabbled with anything to
- 2:39do with Leslie Nielsen. True.
- 2:40That's true too. Yeah, a great.
- 2:41Canadian icon, which I will say, no matter how old he was, he
- 2:45died too soon. A guy like that, I went around
- 2:47forever. Forever, whatever.
- 2:49He's in the movies, which means he is.
- 2:51Forever. I suppose so.
- 2:52That's the nice thing that we can watch this movie almost 40
- 2:54years later. Yeah, and he looked.
- 2:57Very old back then. Yeah.
- 2:58He's a strange actor that way. I think I saw him probably first
- 3:01in this movie and then later probably saw Airplane.
- 3:06Yeah. And he looks the same.
- 3:07Yeah. And even later than that, I
- 3:10watched Creepshow, which came out, I want to say 808182, some
- 3:13of that ballpark 82. And he looks the same there.
- 3:17So that is 8 years difference. But I'm like, he always looks
- 3:23the same. Yeah, his career was kind of
- 3:25defined one way. And then through airplane and
- 3:29the Zazz brothers and then obviously Naked Gun taking it to
- 3:32the NTH completely changed. So for a long time he was just a
- 3:35deadpan, like a good dramatic. Yeah, that's what I heard.
- 3:39Good. Looking guy, you know whatever
- 3:40and. For never witnessed.
- 3:41It but yeah, Forbidden Planet. It's amazing movie 1956 OK,
- 3:44sci-fi classic really great. OK, 30 years later he's Frank
- 3:48Dreben and it's iconic. He couldn't be anyone else.
- 3:52Yeah, somehow, right. You couldn't even fathom that he
- 3:54would be so it's really great casting and either right.
- 3:56He's a hilarious Canadian. And and this type of humor to
- 4:00the deadpan style that he brings the table is something we
- 4:03haven't touched at all. We've done the opposite with Jim
- 4:06Carrey, for example, another great Canadian comedian.
- 4:10Yeah, very opposite. And they're in the spectrum with
- 4:12the style of comedy, but they both work.
- 4:15I think about watching Leslie Nielsen getting the blowjob in
- 4:18Ace Ventura. How he?
- 4:20Would play. That same scene.
- 4:23That would be actually, I think, pretty funny.
- 4:24Pretty funny. I think it would be really
- 4:25funny. I think it would make a good pet
- 4:27detective. Just generally, I think it's a
- 4:30role he could do. Well, you want to hear something
- 4:31really stupid? Love to in terms of Leslie
- 4:34Nielsen and playing Drebben in 94.
- 4:37OK was on a guest host, as it were of SummerSlam, the
- 4:42wrestling show. Interesting.
- 4:43OK there were two undertakers. I remember watching that show
- 4:46and two and there were two and he was on the case he and George
- 4:49Kennedy trying to solve the mystery of the two Undertakers
- 4:53and it was all over like the wrestling magazines and stuff.
- 4:55I just thought like A at that point I was already 15 and I
- 4:59just did a little bit great for you though.
- 5:00But in 88 I love this guy and love this movie.
- 5:03So it's like this weird. Like 6 years later I'm like, oh,
- 5:05this is lame. Like really?
- 5:07Oh yeah, You love wrestling. You love drebbing.
- 5:10I was waning out of the wrestling thing and this guy was
- 5:12being a part of it felt really kind of cheesy and silly.
- 5:15So it was like actually it it started to soil itself a little
- 5:18bit. But I thought I've done that.
- 5:21I just thought, what the hell is Leslie Neilson doing on my
- 5:23wrestling show? But anyway.
- 5:25Have you watched it since and have a new?
- 5:27Appreciation for it. I have not.
- 5:29Maybe we should. Maybe we should.
- 5:31Well, now as we you can do it, you let me know.
- 5:34I'll take your word for it. I'll take your word for it.
- 5:36And I didn't realize this until you brought it up.
- 5:39I I was certainly aware of airplane.
- 5:41Yes, yes. Saw bits of it, haven't seen the
- 5:43whole thing. Oh.
- 5:44That's a goodie. I'm guilty of that.
- 5:45I don't feel great about it. I've seen Spy hard.
- 5:48OK. Yeah, Yeah, OK.
- 5:50I don't remember loving it, no. When you mentioned Dracula, I
- 5:54think OK, I remember didn't watch it, but I know of it now
- 5:57that you mentioned. It you didn't love Spyhard and
- 6:00Dracula was dead and loving it yeah that's how good that movie
- 6:04yeah yeah, yeah Brooks too. Let's.
- 6:06Yeah, I've never been a Brooksy guy.
- 6:08Spaceballs. Yeah, I've overrated.
- 6:10Young Frank. Oh yeah, I don't like
- 6:11Spaceballs. No, I don't.
- 6:13Yeah, the told jammed, Bert jammed is funny at the blips,
- 6:17the bleeps, that's funny. That's it.
- 6:18And the afropic and I love Rick Moranis.
- 6:20Yes, you do. I've said it once and I'll say
- 6:23it again on the record eventually, once we do
- 6:25Ghostbusters. Oh, we already did.
- 6:27And we probably talked a lot about Rick Moranis, I am sure.
- 6:30Don't think we we we, we should have.
- 6:32We didn't do any of justice. Another great Canadian.
- 6:34Absolutely, Icon. Well, maybe we'll talk about him
- 6:37soon. There we go.
- 6:37OK. But I had forgotten things like
- 6:41Wrongfully Accused, barely knew of its existence.
- 6:44Repossessed I think is 1. Absolutely, that's a great
- 6:47superheroes. I think he was in that later
- 6:50took over all of that. So it made me realize there is a
- 6:52lot of parody movies out. But I'm trying to think of one
- 6:56recently outside of the Scary Movie, which apparently is up to
- 7:006. Yeah, I think they're actually
- 7:02working on another one, like a reboot.
- 7:04Did they, like, take over that thing?
- 7:05And they're just responsible for the parodies now, like no one
- 7:08else doesn't. But this one, it's not even this
- 7:09guy like the the Wayans kind of started.
- 7:12Yeah, love the Wayans with the Scary Movie franchise.
- 7:15Yeah. And these guys, James
- 7:18Zuckerberg, Zucker Zuckers. He ended up being nominated for
- 7:23an Oscar for. He directed Ghost in 91.
- 7:27With Bill Cosby. No, that's Ghost Dad.
- 7:31I know. I've done that joke before.
- 7:32You did. You did indeed.
- 7:34I'm a broken record for the record for the record.
- 7:36I'm a broker, but yeah, so anyway, he he directed that he's
- 7:39gone on to do many other things. They did Hot Shots after this
- 7:42anyway. So yeah, they were like the
- 7:44parody guys from the 80s into the sort of mid 90s.
- 7:46And then it just people were like, oh, we can make cheap ones
- 7:49of this. So and you can really tell to me
- 7:51you can tell the the quality drop off because the other ones
- 7:54you just talked about repossessed is terrible.
- 7:57Yeah. And Spy Heart terrible of
- 8:01wrongfully Accused terrible. One of the things that I like
- 8:03about this and we think about a parody, it's easy, I think, to
- 8:07find the jokes. It's harder to find the story.
- 8:12This one at least has a story, however thin it is.
- 8:16There's a narrative. Whereas something like a Scary
- 8:18Movie 4, I don't really feel like there's a narrative
- 8:21function to it. It's just a joke for the sake of
- 8:23joke. Whereas.
- 8:24Oh, you need something? Like Airplane earlier and
- 8:28Hotshots later. It's tell the story of Top Gun,
- 8:32but do it with all the jokes you can possibly think of about
- 8:35action movies. Yeah, do a police show movie and
- 8:40include every single police joke you can think of.
- 8:44Yeah, from a history of police shows.
- 8:46So it goes from Dragnet all the way through.
- 8:49Lots of material. And Airplane the same go and you
- 8:51make a disaster movie and make it as funny as you possibly can,
- 8:54but you keep telling the story and just jam pack it.
- 8:59And I think what ends up happening is in later years,
- 9:02it's just make the joke. And the gap isn't these movies
- 9:06from 40 years ago or 20 years ago or 30 years ago.
- 9:08It's the movie from last year. So if you haven't seen it.
- 9:12Exactly. Like it's, it's just a joke.
- 9:14It's just related to that, like Wrongfully Accused, if it's
- 9:17about the Fugitive, yeah. Now of course, luckily everybody
- 9:20has seen The Fugitive. But yeah, that one is like, tell
- 9:23that story, except that's a movie about the fugitive and not
- 9:27about escape movies, right. Doing one movie as opposed to a
- 9:30genre. And I think that's a problem.
- 9:32Can be. That's why those get.
- 9:34Boring, I think later. Where do you stand with parody
- 9:36porn? I've never watched parody.
- 9:38Really. Me neither.
- 9:41But I I like the idea of it. If you like the idea and you
- 9:45have access to it, I'm. Just, well, I've never seen it,
- 9:47but if somebody was to say, hey, we're going to make a friend's
- 9:49porn, it's and you're going to get Chandler coming in and
- 9:53saying something funny while getting blown, I'm like, well,
- 9:55that's probably a pretty good idea.
- 9:56Yeah, good replayability too. Star Trek TNG, There's a few,
- 10:00I'm sure there is right? So I've heard.
- 10:03So I've heard. Yeah.
- 10:05Now, Phil, you mentioned about the parroting of genre versus
- 10:08parroting a specific film. Yes, right at the beginning of
- 10:13this movie that was doing the genre thing.
- 10:14Luckily we can both agree we are dealing with specific people in
- 10:20history. Yeah, for this prologue you want
- 10:23to call. It it's definitely that's a
- 10:24prologue. It's a prologue I.
- 10:25Love a prologue. MacGyver always had a prologue
- 10:27for the first season or two. Yeah, wonderful.
- 10:29Free credit excitement. And it would go to places like
- 10:32Beirut, actually. You know, he's he's climbing a
- 10:34mountain or something. Yeah.
- 10:36Even though he hates heights. Oh, I didn't know that he did.
- 10:38Hates guns and heights. I can tell you a lot of stuff,
- 10:40buddy. That's not the podcast for.
- 10:42You're for, unfortunately, no. Yeah.
- 10:44So we have a round table, yes, of historical political leaders,
- 10:49yes. Yeah, polite way to say it.
- 10:51Did you recognize any of them? Now you you live this era.
- 10:55I was nine years old when this movie came out.
- 10:57So yeah. But I was alive.
- 10:59I was a student of the game. Yeah.
- 11:01And these people were stuck around for a few years later.
- 11:04So you've been 1314, when these people are still relevant.
- 11:08How many of them did you remember?
- 11:10When watching this, yeah, I knew almost all of them.
- 11:15That's impressive. But remembering in 1988, I was
- 11:19too young to really, I think, fully understand Gorbachev.
- 11:22Obviously, only when I I did. Yeah.
- 11:24Yeah. But someone like Gaddafi.
- 11:26That's right. Slow.
- 11:27Gaddafi, Arafat, Idi Amin, you know, some of that is because
- 11:32they've made movies since like the Last King of Scotland does
- 11:34idiom in like, OK, so you're like, oh, I I know this guy, but
- 11:37I wonder just to to your .40 years on this movie.
- 11:41Would the kids know? Would anybody know or anybody?
- 11:44Yeah. Like how connected are people
- 11:46not only to history generally, but that particular.
- 11:49And we have our own set of dictators now, right.
- 11:51So it's like you swap them out or.
- 11:53Yeah, but. Do you need to know who they are
- 11:56or the question? Because they're just, they're
- 11:59kind of stereotypical. Sure.
- 12:00They're just there for the jokes still.
- 12:01Yeah, that's a good question. I didn't really consider that.
- 12:04You maybe you don't need to know because it's funny just to punch
- 12:07the guy, the Ayatollah and have him have the Mohawk.
- 12:10Yeah. And it doesn't matter that the
- 12:12Ayatollah is who he is. And like has any?
- 12:15Anyone looking like that would not have a Mohawk.
- 12:17That's right. That's why.
- 12:18So it's like, that's the joke. Yeah.
- 12:19And Gorbachev always has a very specific joke, which is the only
- 12:22one I knew of. Therefore, I think me not
- 12:24knowing any of the other ones, I thought it was pretty funny.
- 12:27Yeah. So maybe it doesn't matter.
- 12:29If the joke is funny, then it doesn't matter what it's
- 12:32parodying. Yeah, and I think maybe that's a
- 12:35problem with the other movies is that the jokes aren't that
- 12:37funny. That could be so it.
- 12:38Yeah, if. You're doing a comedy and the
- 12:39jokes aren't funny. That's a problem.
- 12:40Yeah, that's a bigger problem than not recognizing the actor
- 12:43who knew the guy who knew the guy.
- 12:44What was your favorite or funniest moment in that opening
- 12:49sequence in that prologue? I asked because I have one.
- 12:52I figured you might have one. If not, it's OK.
- 12:54It's OK. When I was younger I loved the I
- 12:58knew it looking in the camera that made me laugh when he wiped
- 13:02off the. Gorbachev's birthmark?
- 13:05What's yours? The name tag.
- 13:08My name is Yasser, Yeah. Just in that setting, sure.
- 13:11Them having to wear like name tags, like they're at some sort
- 13:14of conference, true meet and greet.
- 13:16Yeah, I noticed a button I read like I lost 23 lbs to ask me
- 13:19how. Yeah, that's another one that I
- 13:21think that's a very specific, like a Weight Watchers timely
- 13:24commercial that was happening. Yeah, in 88.
- 13:25But yeah, you're right. That's really, it's just funny.
- 13:27Good catch. Because no one would ever wear
- 13:28that. Because.
- 13:29They know who everybody is, obviously.
- 13:31Yeah. And that's why it's funny.
- 13:33And then the introduction of of Dreven, I thought was pretty
- 13:35funny. That whole sequence I thought
- 13:37was like a great introduction and it sets the scene for the
- 13:40movie that we're in. It's pretty silly.
- 13:43Yes. Now, I will say there's a point
- 13:47of silliness where I'm not on board with, OK, not enough to
- 13:51say, OK, well, this is stupid because there is that line
- 13:54between funny and stupid. Sure.
- 13:56And the line is different for everybody.
- 13:58Like, it's not. I'm a guy that loves surviving
- 14:00Christmas and Fred Claus. So, like, silly and funny.
- 14:03Yeah. In fact, you're allowed to have
- 14:04a podcast. Crazy to me.
- 14:09Anyways, everyone's lines a little bit different.
- 14:11It's not in the sand. But the intro with the police
- 14:15car I didn't find funny. You didn't?
- 14:17No, I that title sequence. Yeah.
- 14:19I don't know. I don't that type of humor.
- 14:21Like you end up in the shower. You end up like, I don't know,
- 14:24it's fine. Yeah, all.
- 14:27Right. I thought it was pretty funny.
- 14:29But again, that, and that's the problem with going through a
- 14:32comedy in a podcast form. Yeah, Is.
- 14:35You either find it funny or you don't.
- 14:37But I would say it's impossible for you not to find something
- 14:40funny in this movie. Oh.
- 14:41Yeah, yeah, You have to have no sense of.
- 14:43That's a nice thing. If you don't like that joke,
- 14:44that's OK, because 30 seconds later there's going to be
- 14:46another one. I noticed Philip in part of the
- 14:56title police squad. Oh, from the files of the files
- 15:00of. From what I understand this was
- 15:02ATV show. It's your wheelhouse, yes?
- 15:05And I have not seen one episode of Police Squad and I feel
- 15:09that's a bit of a missed opportunity.
- 15:11Well, it is definitely a missed opportunity, but there's only, I
- 15:13think four of them to choose from, maybe 6.
- 15:16There are 6 episodes. Have you seen it?
- 15:17Because I I wondered how funny they were.
- 15:21If you like this movie, you'll love Police Squad, the
- 15:25television show, which is a strange thing and I'll get into
- 15:28it in a SEC, but because of the success of this, eventually.
- 15:30You bought the six pack? On DVD they've released the six
- 15:33pack exactly and it's hilarious, got commentary tracks, so on and
- 15:36so forth, and it's just as funny as the movie is, but the jokes
- 15:41are the same, which I think is funny.
- 15:43They reuse exact same jokes. Very similar, if not the same
- 15:46jokes. Yeah, OK.
- 15:48So the fact that you use the same jokes six years later,
- 15:51Yeah, everyone loves it. Huge hit. 3 sequels or two
- 15:55sequels. The show got cancelled after six
- 15:57episodes. Yeah, probably cancelled before
- 16:00that. It's like nobody's watching TVT
- 16:03VS Pretty Hot in the early 80s. Like this is still a new thing.
- 16:06Cheers, about to start right 80. 282 yeah, very good, yeah, a lot
- 16:11of good things happening, Simon and Simon.
- 16:13Sure heart to heart, Sure do. Why not Falcon?
- 16:17Crest, a lot of good stuff, but it goes to the big screen, which
- 16:21is also big in that era as well. Going to the theater.
- 16:25Yeah, sure. And people ate it up and loved
- 16:27it generally. I mean, I'm assuming it was well
- 16:29received at the time. Oh.
- 16:30Yeah, this is a huge later hit. Huge hit, Yeah.
- 16:32Which is, to your point, is rather funny.
- 16:34Like you think that's funny If it's a joke, why doesn't a joke
- 16:36work in 82 and work in 88? Maybe the marketing could be
- 16:40yeah, movies marketed to a bigger, broader.
- 16:42That's the audience. There's a lot of television on
- 16:44at any given time. Whereas.
- 16:46Where in theaters now is this movie?
- 16:49Let's go see it. Could be it's It's fascinating
- 16:52though, because it's a good point you bring up.
- 16:54I've done that twice now, two points now.
- 16:57There's probably a fair number of people like yourself.
- 16:59Well, hopefully there isn't a lot of people like you, but that
- 17:01may have looked up police squad after they saw a naked gun and
- 17:05then it got a an increase in viewage.
- 17:08Well, not the. Well, I guess not then, because
- 17:10they're not on syndication. Maybe not in six episodes, I
- 17:13suppose. You have to have 100 to get in
- 17:14syndication. Yeah.
- 17:15What is that? Prerequisite is it or something
- 17:17like Star Trek TNG and Friday the 13th are bought 4
- 17:21syndication so they're already built into syndicated Paramount
- 17:25kind of not thing they yeah. TNG one of the best syndicated
- 17:28shows of all time. Sure, but it was the IT was
- 17:31gotten Friday the 13th part. Yeah, the television.
- 17:34Show. Yeah, Speaking of murderers like
- 17:38Jason Voorhees in front of 13th, Yeah, we have OJ Simpson.
- 17:41Not proven, buddy. That's well, yeah.
- 17:44Not beyond reasonable doubt. That's right.
- 17:45Do you think he did it? Oh, absolutely.
- 17:47I. Don't think so.
- 17:48OK, I'm just kidding. I don't think he did it beyond
- 17:51reasonable doubt, so I think they made the right call.
- 17:54All right. I don't know.
- 17:56Speaking of Canadian comedians. Norman MacDonald was fired for
- 17:58that very same thing. So, yeah, because the owner, the
- 18:01producer and executive, whoever, Don Olmeyer, was buddies with
- 18:04OJ, Yeah, had enough. My grandma taped it and she was
- 18:09a young and the rest of this fan, OK, She Clarence Thomas was
- 18:14another one. Yeah, sure.
- 18:15She would eat up these stories if she was alive today, this
- 18:18whole Trump thing, she'd be over the moon.
- 18:21She just. So was drama.
- 18:23The drama of these things, OK. And she was so enthralled with
- 18:27the OJ case. The I remember in high school,
- 18:31we watched the verdict. It brought in televisions to
- 18:34watch the verdict. Yeah.
- 18:36And the only correlation I have when I spoke about this with my
- 18:39mother was that in 1963, they watched the coverage of the JFK
- 18:46assassination, that they rolled in televisions into the
- 18:49carpeteria to watch the fallout and.
- 18:51That I could understand. That's the thing.
- 18:53It's 22 or three years later, and that was the next time that
- 18:56this kind of cultural event hit. Everybody needs to watch this
- 19:00one thing at this time. No offence to Nicole or the
- 19:04other guy, Ron Goldman. Yes, that's it.
- 19:07Yes, no offence to them. Sounds like a little bit, but
- 19:12it's it's tragic as it is, of course, but to bring that into a
- 19:14school I find surprising a little bit.
- 19:16It wasn't not in our school because I don't remember or I
- 19:18was skipping class. Do you have?
- 19:19Television in the country. Yeah.
- 19:22Yeah. Funny guy.
- 19:24Funny guy. Speaking of funny guys, OJ
- 19:27Simpson in this movie. What do you think?
- 19:29Funny guy? He's.
- 19:30That's the thing. In 88, I thought this is
- 19:31hilarious. Yeah.
- 19:33And in 98, I thought a little less funny.
- 19:38Well, you got to separate the man.
- 19:41Actually, you know, what's strange is actually what I think
- 19:43about OJ in this movie. It's almost fitting his first
- 19:49sequence that we introduce a man because again, this scene is
- 19:53hilarious. But what he gets is.
- 19:55A little bit of torture. This is hilarious.
- 19:57Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:58It's cake on the face. It's like, why is there birthday
- 20:02cake there? There's a bear trap.
- 20:05It's the best 1. And that's the one I remember.
- 20:07And it escalates. Bear trap is one of the last
- 20:10ones. Yes, it is.
- 20:11You know, a couple of the earlier ones.
- 20:13Well, he ends up with the window sill.
- 20:15He puts his hand on the window sill.
- 20:16It just. Puts, puts his hand on the
- 20:18fireplace, sits on the wet band and then goes Oh no.
- 20:23Yes, wet paints nothing. So yeah, it escalates to the end
- 20:26with the bear trap. Even kicking in the door right
- 20:29from the beginning and like waiting while he puts fidgets
- 20:32with the handle and. He's like, put down your guns.
- 20:34Yeah, there's 8 of them. One guy wipes.
- 20:38This is a showcase scene. This is a great way to start a
- 20:41comedy. Yes.
- 20:43We're like 5 minutes in. Yeah, you got a pretty solid
- 20:45prologue and they get this great scene.
- 20:48It's just hilarious. It really is.
- 20:50It's. That's the type of humor I like.
- 20:53Yeah. Silly, goofy stuff.
- 20:55Yeah. Like, just slapsticky, Yeah.
- 20:57You have the combination of deadpan and slapstick in the
- 21:00same movie. Yeah, I think that's a good
- 21:02point, right? Because you're getting big stuff
- 21:04happening with a straight face, and I think that's the trick.
- 21:07Yeah. And this movie does a great.
- 21:09Airplane does it great and Hot Shots does it great.
- 21:11I always like slapstick to a certain amount.
- 21:13I don't want to be like the driving force sure of a comedy
- 21:17personally, but what when they do it in these instances like
- 21:20this, it's just. Fantastic.
- 21:22Like an accent piece. But yeah, you're right, this is
- 21:24a showcase. Like this is just like the
- 21:25funniest stuff you can find. Speaking of big things happening
- 21:29with a deadpan and so forth, we have nothing bigger than an
- 21:33airplane. Arriving.
- 21:34Well, I mean, there's bigger things stuff out there.
- 21:36There's a. Big crowd arriving for this
- 21:38airplane and Dreven is dejected. He's coming back from a nice,
- 21:43relaxing trip to Beirut. Looking for peace?
- 21:46Looking for a little peace, which is again, just a little
- 21:49throwaway line that's really funny.
- 21:51But he gets to the mic and he's talks about how you, it's just
- 21:54right there. The podium just comes there.
- 21:57You come here to hear a hero's welcome.
- 21:59You come here to hear you know how hard it is because his wife
- 22:02left in Vic. Yeah, Victoria take No.
- 22:05Found a better lover, apparently, Yeah.
- 22:07He's best sex she's ever had. He's a tennis pro.
- 22:11But we got an introduction of Ed.
- 22:13Yeah. Who's I'm assuming in police
- 22:14squad. Yes.
- 22:15Yeah, and he has a responsibility to tell Nielsen
- 22:19about Victoria, about Victoria, which I think is really funny
- 22:22and also has to remind him that none of these reporters are here
- 22:26for him. Yeah.
- 22:26What are they here for? Weird Al?
- 22:28Yankovic. Yankovic.
- 22:30Which is funny because he's a parody.
- 22:32Yeah, for sure. In fact, he does the title song
- 22:36for Spy Heart. Yeah, OK, I probably would have
- 22:38remembered that had I seen it, if you thought about it.
- 22:40Yeah, I like Weird Al. He's great.
- 22:42Other than in UHF he's great deep in the arc.
- 22:47That's very deep and you need to watch that movie again because
- 22:50even I, unfortunately, I, you didn't love it.
- 22:52I undercut it when I watched it and I've watched it since and
- 22:55just thought why am I lying to myself and my family and
- 22:58friends? It's the only time I've ever
- 22:59been to convince you of your. It's the only time you manage to
- 23:02think, you know what, maybe Dave's right on this.
- 23:04Never again, never. That movie is great.
- 23:08I can't wait to get the 4K. Nonetheless, they're going to
- 23:12take a trip to the hospital they got to check in on on Nordberg.
- 23:16Before they check in on him, they got to check in on some
- 23:18boobs. Well, yes, yeah, that's another
- 23:21style of comedy. Sure as well you'd miss it if
- 23:24you're on your phone. That's true.
- 23:25I did not miss it. I did miss a couple of things.
- 23:27Not because I was on the phone, but I literally was distracted
- 23:29for a brief moment. And you can easily miss
- 23:32something. But yeah, he's talking about
- 23:35breasts. And then you see two things that
- 23:37essentially look like breasts with nipples.
- 23:39Yeah, he says. I can't.
- 23:40Get out of my mind. Everywhere I look, there's
- 23:42something reminds me. There it is.
- 23:43There it is. Yeah, that's how this instructor
- 23:46is a lucky man. Well, we don't know what
- 23:48Victoria looks like. Well, yeah, if she looks
- 23:50anything like those, she's OK. That's true.
- 23:54Now, a couple that is together still, luckily they've been,
- 23:58they've weathered storms, I'm sure is Nordberg and Nordberg's
- 24:01wife, Missus Nordberg? Missus Norberg, and even she
- 24:04calls him Norberg. Yes, which is what I love about
- 24:06this movie is it's able to come back scene after scene after
- 24:10scene and be consistently funny. Yeah.
- 24:12Yeah, there's a lot or two, sure, but right out of the gate,
- 24:15it's just continuous laughter. I love everything about this
- 24:20hospital scene A. 100% to begin with, my favorite line in almost
- 24:25any comedy. That's high praise.
- 24:27That is, I'm a little hyper. Well, is this hot take?
- 24:29A little hyperbolic, but but a line that I love.
- 24:32There's two in this movie that I've taken with me for a long
- 24:34time. The one in this makes me
- 24:36chuckle. I've used it in many different
- 24:38iterations. Is what's his prognosis?
- 24:42He's got a 5050 chance of dying, but only a 10% chance of.
- 24:46That, Yeah. And the look, even Leslie, even
- 24:49though he's usually the butt of it, Yeah, he gives him and a
- 24:51look. Like, I don't know.
- 24:53What are you talking about? And that's what, to me, what
- 24:54made it funny. Oh, sure was the look.
- 24:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:57Where's Nordberg, by the way? He's in the hospital.
- 25:00And nobody asks where is he? He's right there.
- 25:02Yes, those are the subtle lines in this.
- 25:05I didn't even get it now right. That's how subtle that line is.
- 25:08Really good. But I think what makes this
- 25:09scene generally fun, there's two parts, 2 parts that I think are
- 25:12hilarious. He's talking to Norberg and he's
- 25:15trying to tell him something and he's misunderstanding everything
- 25:18that he's saying. I love you, which is the name of
- 25:19the boat. That's right about the drugs,
- 25:22Thinking he wants drugs, heroin. Oh, I can get you some, but
- 25:25it'll take a couple days. Like, that was just all played
- 25:28perfectly by both, and I love it.
- 25:30And then he actually gives them some drugs and he's knocked out.
- 25:32Yeah. And then the second part is
- 25:35trying to make his wife feel better.
- 25:38Yeah. And just saying all the wrong
- 25:40stuff. Yeah, but without even knowing
- 25:43by a. Bear in the dead of the night.
- 25:44That's how I want to go. Right.
- 25:45Yeah, Parachute that doesn't open, Yeah.
- 25:48But some dignity. And then she just starts.
- 25:50Crying. That's big.
- 25:51Like, yeah. But then she's looking at him
- 25:54like all wondering what are you talking about when he's talking
- 25:56about the ways he wants to die. I know.
- 25:59It's just wonderful. It's such a refreshing style of
- 26:02comedy that I hadn't seen for a very long time.
- 26:04And it's got a great button because at the end of this
- 26:06scene, it's, it's classic misdirect, right where you've
- 26:09got Dreb and he's talking about how like, I will not rest.
- 26:12We're going to find this guy. We're not going to rest until a
- 26:14minute. That's what we got, something to
- 26:16eat. Yeah, that's the deadpan, that's
- 26:17the subtlety. That's the quick misdirection of
- 26:20comedy that it just works every. Time and I get the sense that
- 26:22was a lot of what happened in police squad.
- 26:24I have seen clips of that type of delivery of dialogue.
- 26:29Also the close-ups of people shooting at each other that goes
- 26:31into the wide shot and they're three feet apart behind garbage
- 26:34cans. Yeah, that's a funny gang.
- 26:36Whether you like it or not. It's.
- 26:37Fun. It's if I'm in the mood.
- 26:39If I'm in the mood. Sure, but it's such a silly
- 26:41component that you're like, yeah, that's just funny.
- 26:44Now, I would argue the next scene is questionably funny.
- 26:50This is the first scene where like, OK, the two previous
- 26:54scenes, this does not live up to what I've just seen.
- 26:57And that's OK because you can't do that.
- 26:59It's impossible to can't peek. That.
- 27:01Come on. Come on.
- 27:02Come on. We're men in our 40s we can't
- 27:03do. That no, Dante couldn't do it
- 27:05and he made a movie about his peak.
- 27:12Pierce Brosnan coming, coming to our show soon.
- 27:16Yeah, maybe. Yeah, I think so.
- 27:18He's in a church, but they're holding sort of just like press
- 27:21press conference, a pet that's hard to say.
- 27:24Press conference about the queen coming and they're on the detail
- 27:29that's. The big plot that you were
- 27:30talking about before, right you? Still have to have a plot.
- 27:32I don't care about it. No, but it has to exist of
- 27:34course. And his mic doesn't work, he
- 27:37gets a different mic. I wonder, before we get into
- 27:40specifics here, you work in live television.
- 27:43Have you ever had a similar type of situation?
- 27:46No, not. Like that sure it's a hot mic or
- 27:49anything. You've had a lot of hot mics and
- 27:51it's just like shut up. Like you're this, you're making
- 27:53the production harder to do because you should know better
- 27:56not to be talking while this is happening.
- 27:58So just annoyance wise, but not no good moments of comedy came
- 28:02out of it. Not to say it hasn't happened,
- 28:04I'm sure it has, but in my small sample size, No 3 minute pee and
- 28:08no three minute. Now this happens on like
- 28:10newscasts and things like that. People have been caught on hot
- 28:12mics. Probably got lots of jobs over.
- 28:14It absolutely. I think about not even hot mics
- 28:16in the modern age. We're dealing with hot teams
- 28:18cameras, remember? Yeah.
- 28:19Masturbations and like all of that stuff.
- 28:22You just think you're on your own.
- 28:24So weird. I am super paranoid about that
- 28:27if I'm on a conference call when I was at work or something or
- 28:30just and I had to go to the bathroom or something but I need
- 28:33to be on the call. I'm so nervous hyper like I
- 28:35double check it like it's same like seeing anything it's just
- 28:39the hearing it and like weird. Yeah, I know You're definitely.
- 28:42If you're masturbating during a meeting, you're the one that's
- 28:44going to mute it. I.
- 28:45Respect it or you want to get caught.
- 28:47Like you you're asking? For it yeah exactly yeah, it's
- 28:49crazy cry for help it's. Crazy the extension of that
- 28:51scene, but I I'll tell you in 88, as a nine year old I thought
- 28:55this was hilarious. Oh yeah, I would say.
- 28:57My mother loved it too. Yeah, this was just like a
- 28:59funny, funny scene. My only line I really like is
- 29:02whoops. But like, overall, I think this
- 29:06is a kind of a low part. I'm like, yeah, it's like you're
- 29:09saying you're laying out a story that I don't care about.
- 29:12Whatever. Yeah, but that's.
- 29:13Pretty good prostate though. Yeah, I guess so.
- 29:16I guess maybe some issues there, but not bad for good flow.
- 29:18Yeah, good flow for an older fellow.
- 29:20Didn't get to see the colouring so we don't know what he had for
- 29:23lunch. How hydrated he was.
- 29:25That's right. Now would you call someone that
- 29:28peasle? Would you call that a dinghy?
- 29:31Dinghy like is a small boat. Oh, you know, I I didn't get
- 29:34that. It's a small inflatable boat.
- 29:35Take a dinghy out to the murder scene.
- 29:37Never heard that. Yeah.
- 29:38So if you again, if you don't know, then it's not funny.
- 29:41And here's a huge blot hole. I have major issue right now.
- 29:44OK. And correct me if I'm wrong and
- 29:46I'll apologize right now on taped podcasting or three
- 29:50episodes from now when we actually realize.
- 29:52What happened? Do you do a chalk outline?
- 29:55If they haven't died, no. I didn't think so, No.
- 29:58Yeah. Because he's alive.
- 29:59Yes. He's also in the water, though.
- 30:01You need a joke. I mean, you have to do it
- 30:02because that's a great opportunity.
- 30:04Great joke. Yeah.
- 30:05It's funny. Yes.
- 30:06Yeah. Now, when you saw that, did you
- 30:08think that the killer was Jim? No.
- 30:11This is a deep Seinfeld reference.
- 30:13Yeah, yeah, Jim. Oh, yeah, it is.
- 30:15I was just laughing just at a fake it.
- 30:17Yeah, I was faking it. You guys was faking it.
- 30:19I did. I fake a lot.
- 30:22Fake, fake, fake. Well, Frank, we find out later,
- 30:25fake is every orgasm like Kramer.
- 30:27He faked it. Fake, fake, fake, fake.
- 30:30This little Elaine. Oh yeah, Elaine was the one
- 30:32faking, but Kramer admits to faking it if he wants to get up
- 30:35early in the morning. Great episode.
- 30:36Great episode. It is.
- 30:37Really. Yeah, it's a golden one.
- 30:39But yes, anyway, one of the few. Things of Seinfeld, like I
- 30:42distinctly remember, is that the guy must be.
- 30:45Yeah, and I didn't. I would and you missed it.
- 30:46I did. I missed it.
- 30:47Not about those moments. I have an off day.
- 30:49Because I don't care as much as you do.
- 30:51So when I catch it, I feel really cool.
- 30:53I got 1 and when you don't, I'm elevated.
- 30:55I'm on Cloud 9 right now. Elated.
- 30:58Elated. Elated.
- 30:59So now that I now that I've defined dinghy and the chalk
- 31:03outline, I've explained all of that.
- 31:04Appreciate it. Would you say that was worth 20
- 31:07bucks that information because. We're about to.
- 31:09Is that your segue? We're.
- 31:10Going to do a negotiation here. Is that worth 20 bucks?
- 31:13No, that's not. But the scene is, yeah, Worth at
- 31:17least 20 bucks because it's something relatable that they do
- 31:20in that world to get information.
- 31:23They don't want to talk. Give me 20 bucks, I'll start
- 31:25talking. Absolutely.
- 31:26But the fact that it goes the other way and the other guy
- 31:31wants information and gets gives them back and then he has to
- 31:33borrow 20 bucks, that's the best part.
- 31:35Yeah. Is Bobby 20?
- 31:36I don't think I should tell you. Yeah, I love comedies that have
- 31:40small scenes, little subtle that you just like, that's just
- 31:44funny. That's just.
- 31:45Yeah, it doesn't even a lot of explanation.
- 31:46That is a perfectly crafted joke.
- 31:48It's funny, it's recognizable. It's consistent with the not
- 31:52only the tone of the movie, but it's consistent with the real
- 31:54version of that. Like you're saying, the hard
- 31:56boiled detective drama from the 50s and 60s has that scene.
- 32:01Yeah. It just isn't played for laughs,
- 32:03and this movie gets to play it for laughs.
- 32:05And I think an advantage to watching a movie like this every
- 32:08once in a while is you can leave something at the door.
- 32:12Plausibility, sure, but I don't have to say, well, that wouldn't
- 32:15really happen, but you don't have to question things.
- 32:17We're safe for the next hour. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 32:20You can't. You're not basically allowed to.
- 32:22That would be a crime in itself. Say, well, wait a minute, that
- 32:25wouldn't actually that happened or something doesn't quite line
- 32:28up where the sun is up in Pearl Harbor and it should have been
- 32:32down. What time it doesn't work.
- 32:33Yeah. Yeah, this.
- 32:35Yeah, I don't you'll worry about any of that.
- 32:36I I didn't. I don't even care about the
- 32:38plot. Yeah, I know it's there, sure.
- 32:39And I'm paying attention. It's.
- 32:40What propels the story? But it's not about a story.
- 32:42It's about. A.
- 32:43It's not important if it doesn't add up.
- 32:44Yeah, and maybe it doesn't. I'd have to actually pay
- 32:47attention more to it watching it again, which I probably will of.
- 32:50Does the plot actually make sense?
- 32:53Is there a reason why he wants to kill the queen?
- 32:55Yes, Yep, there isn't really any motive.
- 32:56I don't remember if there if it was said.
- 32:59Not that I can remember. So again, that's how little it.
- 33:00Matters, Yeah. So it's a nice break.
- 33:02Yes, absolutely, absolutely. And after a long break, we get
- 33:05to see the return of God. Yeah, which?
- 33:10We haven't talked about in the episode a podcast, but my gosh,
- 33:14we've seen. How many times have you seen
- 33:17Wrath of Khan? This is the only other movie
- 33:19I've ever seen Ricardo Maltaban in.
- 33:21Yeah, I think he was something before Wrath of Khan.
- 33:24It was a forbidden sort of fantasy island.
- 33:26Yeah, on television. Let's look at some.
- 33:28Other movie too. Arabian.
- 33:30Something went to Arabia. Yeah.
- 33:33Wasn't it? I'm not sure.
- 33:34I don't know, but yeah, he's an iconic, similar to Lorraine
- 33:38Fletcher or Louise Fletcher, one of those two.
- 33:41Louise, yeah, who just has such an iconic role, maybe did some
- 33:44other things. Doesn't matter.
- 33:45He's always con, Yeah. And maybe Victor.
- 33:48I was talking to my brother who connected tissue.
- 33:50I'll give it to you this week, please, because con's in Star
- 33:53Trek. Louise Fletcher was in an
- 33:55episode of Star Trek to DS9 and she played a really cool, bad
- 34:00villain, and my brother was saying she just nailed it.
- 34:03That goes it's such a great role.
- 34:04He had known of her and oh, that's fun.
- 34:06That's great. Yeah.
- 34:07She's great at me. Yeah, Absolutely, brother.
- 34:08'S probably great too, but. Yeah, all right.
- 34:10He's fine. Decent taste, decent taste.
- 34:13Well, you know, a man with good taste, like fine Corinthian
- 34:16leather is Ricardo. Here we get to meet Victor.
- 34:22Ludlow, Ludlow, Ludwig. Ludwig.
- 34:24No relation to Chris. No.
- 34:26Or Craig. Or Craig.
- 34:27Sorry. It is Craig.
- 34:28Yes. No one else knows that but you.
- 34:29Yeah. Montreal Canadiens defenceman
- 34:31from the same era as this movie, actually.
- 34:34Exactly. He wouldn't have been playing
- 34:35for them then. Yeah.
- 34:35Very defensive defenceman. Yeah.
- 34:37He's great. Yeah.
- 34:37Yeah. 1 nothing. Stanley Cup.
- 34:40Maybe he won the Stanley Cup. Not because I am.
- 34:42No, this office scene is one that I it drags a little bit
- 34:45long, I have to tell you. But again, when you're dealing
- 34:48with a movie that's so quick paced, oh, my God, the fact that
- 34:51we have to wait a minute between a joke feels like it's a long
- 34:55time because we only had to wait 20 seconds.
- 34:56That's true. Yeah, that's funny.
- 34:59But the Japanese fighting fish and the samurai pen, I think it
- 35:03writes up. I imagine it would.
- 35:06Maybe not after he's done with it, no, but I I like this scene
- 35:10and the way in which only water will.
- 35:12It's impervious to everything except water.
- 35:15We know. What's going to?
- 35:16Happen and the priceless fighting fish like OK, I see
- 35:19what's going to happen here and the delivery and the pay off of
- 35:22this. Even if I think the line it
- 35:24takes a little while to get to. It's genius.
- 35:27There's two things in the scene I love the first.
- 35:30You bet you do. Yeah, when he's eating the the
- 35:34nose, it's just genius. You like?
- 35:36That one OK, I it's just that's fine.
- 35:37Yeah, we've. Talked so many times on movies
- 35:39where what is that thing that sort of sticks with you And even
- 35:42if you don't remember anything else and it's a look, it's a
- 35:44sound, it's a musical cue. It's something that out of
- 35:48context has stuck with you and everything else around it.
- 35:50You have no idea. That's a line that I remember
- 35:53obviously coming from the movie, but it is so apropos of nothing
- 35:57in my real life. But anytime I think of a good
- 36:01view or do you ever do this or do that, you bet you do, comes
- 36:04out of my mouth or at least in my head.
- 36:06Every single. Time.
- 36:07That's crazy. That's great.
- 36:09But I just love the culmination of all of this scene, this back
- 36:12and forth between the two and having him shake his hand.
- 36:16Yeah, with all the water coming. Out.
- 36:17I'm just like God this is so well played.
- 36:20And then we have this wonderful introduction to Jane, played by
- 36:23the great Priscilla Presley. No relation to Elvis, though.
- 36:28They just ex-wife. I was an ex-wife.
- 36:30Yeah. And they had a a child.
- 36:33Lisa. Lisa Marie, Princess of Pop.
- 36:36And similarly, Ivana Trump had some trouble with the stairs not
- 36:41to be a little. Dark, but yes, you know what if
- 36:43we're making OJ jokes a couple hours a couple minutes ago.
- 36:46I think it's OK to be intensive around anything with Trump.
- 36:49That's fair because you got that name insensitivity.
- 36:51Falls you. Yeah.
- 36:51Fuck yourself. You know what I mean?
- 36:53Totally. Fair Enough is enough.
- 36:55That's all I'm saying. Gloves are off.
- 36:57On off the shelf. Luckily, she springs back up.
- 37:00She's fine. Brushes herself off.
- 37:02Yeah. No problems there.
- 37:03Yeah, she's great. Gorgeous.
- 37:05Did have an anklet. And this is a joke.
- 37:07I've never really. Oh, where was it before?
- 37:09Yeah, those are left open to interpretations.
- 37:12When I was a kid, I think probably because I was naive and
- 37:15whatever but I still don't really get it.
- 37:17But I just assumed it was her necklace and that she's so
- 37:20slender that it ends up on her leg.
- 37:21But I'm like, I don't. Know as good as guesses any?
- 37:24Yeah, but I thought this is a sex joke.
- 37:26I I don't know, that's just my ignorance.
- 37:27Well, what is is a nice Beaver, which is funny because that term
- 37:31was used in a movie. We just.
- 37:33Watched Cuckoo. That's right.
- 37:35That's right. Yeah.
- 37:36So that was a term. In the 70s and 80s, absolutely
- 37:39that. I don't think it's used at all
- 37:41and I don't know why it was ever used.
- 37:43I don't know what a Beaver has to do with that.
- 37:45I think, you know, the Bush I think is what that is.
- 37:49And in the modern times, bushes aren't what they used as
- 37:52prevalent. And so I think the Beaver term
- 37:54is not really relevant anymore. Well, this is a stuffed.
- 37:58Beaver. And it's a beautiful Beaver.
- 38:00Yeah, this is another joke where it's like when I'm nine years
- 38:03old. I don't understand it, but I
- 38:05know it's funny. Even just like a couple of years
- 38:07later, I just had it stuffed. I'm like, that is a genius line.
- 38:11These are ones that I don't want too too many of.
- 38:14OK. But this movie has the right
- 38:16amount of that style of misunderstanding or misusing a
- 38:20term. That's something else.
- 38:21Is it the word play you don't like or the word play?
- 38:23The sexual, I don't think you'd want too much of either.
- 38:27Yeah, just keep it fresh. Sure.
- 38:29You know me? What?
- 38:30I think That's right. Keep it fresh.
- 38:33Parody. Foreign.
- 38:34Yeah. Keep it fresh, buddy.
- 38:36Good and fresh, that's all. What I find funny about this
- 38:38scene is obviously the visual gag.
- 38:41But the idea that they just something about going out for
- 38:44Viking food. Yeah, I don't think that's a
- 38:46thing. It's such a like an odd thing.
- 38:48It's just funny because it's funny.
- 38:50No one again, like he's random. Don't think about it, Don't ask
- 38:52any questions. It's just Viking food.
- 38:54But also how she needs to rest up because the big day tomorrow
- 38:58is Arbor Day. Yeah, Yeah.
- 39:00Not a big day at all. Like no.
- 39:02One cares. Maybe we'll take.
- 39:03Maybe we'll take a rain check. No, dinner's OK.
- 39:04Dinner's OK. Yeah, we don't want to do rain
- 39:06check. The word play in that is great.
- 39:07I thought the chemistry between the two is very, yeah, very
- 39:10clever. Like very good.
- 39:12I'd say I'm not going to argue with that, no.
- 39:14And I love chemistry. You love arguing.
- 39:17I don't think I do, no, because I don't ever win well.
- 39:19With me, I think you. Do but I think we can both agree
- 39:21one joke in this movie that is used a few times, but I think
- 39:25it's the right amount and because it escalates and it's
- 39:28already happened a couple of times in the movie, every time
- 39:30he parks his car, Oh yes, it's something as simple as hitting a
- 39:34hydrant. He knocks off the fisherman, if
- 39:36you remember. That's right, Harbour.
- 39:37He grabs the luggage cart as well.
- 39:39At the airport, right? Exactly.
- 39:40Yes, yes, that's kind of silly. Yeah.
- 39:42But this is where it just escalates to a point.
- 39:45It's just absolutely ridiculous. The airbags go off, causing it
- 39:50to go into gear and go down a hill, and then he starts
- 39:53shooting at it as if it's somebody getting away or it's an
- 39:55assailant. Yep.
- 39:56Anybody get the license plate? For the make of the car.
- 40:00He shoots at it and it blows up. Everyone's screaming.
- 40:03And then he realizes that his car.
- 40:06And it's the greatness of Leslie Nielsen's face.
- 40:09Yeah. Right, because we just talked
- 40:10earlier, Jim Carrey making a career on these elastic faces,
- 40:13all these, you know, whatever, driving, going from the
- 40:17curiosity and frustration of shooting to the complete
- 40:20bewilderment and awareness that he is, in fact, the culprit, as
- 40:25it were. Yeah, it's just beautiful.
- 40:27It's indicative to the things we just talked about over the last
- 40:29few weeks is you have to pay attention even in a comedy,
- 40:32right, Because you're thinking, well, it's not a plot heavy
- 40:34movie fluff. I can come and go.
- 40:36It doesn't really matter. Right.
- 40:37Bathroom breaks. Exactly.
- 40:39This isn't a hard drama that's going to have to, like, piece it
- 40:41all together. Yeah.
- 40:42But when he arrives back at the police station, there's 7 jokes
- 40:46that are happening. We see the big explosion of
- 40:48stuff we just talked about, but he goes in and we have a little
- 40:51bit of like a James Bond moment. Yes, Yeah, we have this Swiss
- 40:54Army shoe and it's not practical at all.
- 40:58Scissors or something. Yeah, it has the knife at the
- 41:00end. OK, I can see that maybe being
- 41:02useful. But then it has a scissor.
- 41:04Everything a Swiss Army knife has.
- 41:05That's right. But it's in a shoe.
- 41:07And then he has a little cuff length dart.
- 41:10Handy, turns out. Yeah, that's.
- 41:11Gonna play, but he just tested out on Ed.
- 41:14That's right. Oh, don't worry, he'll be up in
- 41:15a second. Why?
- 41:17Yeah, like why? Because you're gonna hit the
- 41:19floor. You're gonna hit your head.
- 41:21That's right. But one thing I did miss talk to
- 41:23me from the first time and I noticed that the second time I
- 41:26watched it was the graffiti bit. Oh yes, the anti graffiti while
- 41:29we're. It sprays them.
- 41:31Yeah, it's funny. I mean, it's not hilarious, but
- 41:33I was surprised that I had missed it I think.
- 41:35It's really clever. Well, it's clever like the whole
- 41:37like not just funny. I think it's like actually
- 41:39something that that's a good idea.
- 41:40That might be a pretty good idea.
- 41:41Yeah. And we haven't done this movie
- 41:43and we will in 93 Demolition Man with Stallone.
- 41:47Stallone. Yeah.
- 41:48Snipes. Yeah.
- 41:49Great. A movie I love.
- 41:50It's amazing, but I've seen it. I am pretty sure, I am pretty
- 41:54sure in that movie there is an anti graffiti situation as well.
- 41:57I'm not 100% positive. It's been a long time, but
- 42:00that's my memory of it. So it is like, I think it's like
- 42:02almost something that could be a thing.
- 42:04Yeah, it's just hard to spend the city's money on something
- 42:06like that. But it's indicative to me what
- 42:08that is, right? You blink your eye and you miss
- 42:11a hilarious joke. Yeah.
- 42:12So you have to be as closely paying attention to this movie.
- 42:15If not more. As you would Magnolia or the
- 42:18heavy long drama with OR or something like a clear and
- 42:21present danger where there's lots of characters and intrigue
- 42:24you. Those ones you have to pay
- 42:26attention to. This one is the same, just for
- 42:27different reasons. It's why movies are sometimes
- 42:29not a entirely A passive experience, at least not the way
- 42:32I watch them. You just try and shut out the
- 42:34world and lock in. Mr. Pap Smear now I I don't love
- 42:44that humor, so I don't love the whole Simpsons like we're Bart
- 42:47calls and and just MO to say his thing.
- 42:50So name play I've never been a huge fan of.
- 42:53That's fine. And sure, I'm not out.
- 42:55But everyone has their preferences.
- 42:56This movie kind of gives you a little bit of everything.
- 42:59Again, you're going to latch onto something.
- 43:00Something's going to make you giggle at the very least.
- 43:03But this is where we get the device that's going to cause
- 43:07some problems in the final 20 minutes of the movie.
- 43:11It's a bracelet of sorts that somehow we don't explain.
- 43:15It doesn't matter. You don't need it, but it'll get
- 43:17you to pick up a gun and shoot whoever you've been told to
- 43:19shoot. You've been brainwashed.
- 43:21Great episode MacGyver. Actually he gets amnesia and
- 43:24he's. Just a gun.
- 43:25Well, he almost shot Pete Thornton for God's sake.
- 43:28Luckily didn't happen figured out before.
- 43:31Sweeps. And the the secretary and she's
- 43:34great. She's great.
- 43:35She's small roles. Yeah.
- 43:36And they're obviously showing off this with Mr. Pap smear and
- 43:40this is their plan. Yeah.
- 43:41The idea that the greatest. Assassin doesn't even know
- 43:44they're an assassin. Exactly.
- 43:45That's actually a pretty clever. It's fun, yeah.
- 43:47Yeah, you. Can play with it again that
- 43:48works both sides. It opens up a.
- 43:50Lot of stories comedically, you get what we get here, but that
- 43:54plot not comedically like in a dramatic sense or a thriller,
- 43:57yeah, works just as. Well, it's been done.
- 43:59Yeah, it's been done. So I really think it's a clever
- 44:02way and it does up the ante. Every once in a while.
- 44:04We need a little piece and this is the next.
- 44:06Wave of it and the next scene is showing the use of it.
- 44:10Not the main use for it, but they got to get rid of OJ
- 44:13absolutely because he knows things and they thought he had
- 44:15died. The doctor, yes, something gets
- 44:18the bracelet on. Whatever, doesn't matter.
- 44:20And he's about to smother him with the pillow.
- 44:23Classic that. Throwing the pillow into Ian's
- 44:26face, even, like, struggling with it.
- 44:27It's the greatest. Yeah, it's so stupid, but it's
- 44:31funny. Stupid work.
- 44:32Again, there's a line between funny and stupid.
- 44:34Most of the time it's at least mildly funny.
- 44:37We did almost Heroes. There's a lot of stupid stuff in
- 44:40there that's funny, though. Well, I it's a lot of stupid
- 44:43stuff that I personally didn't connect.
- 44:44No, because we were, they weren't high.
- 44:46That was the problem. And this has stupid stuff where
- 44:48I'm like, that's funny. Yeah, most of the time, if not
- 44:51all the time. Yeah, you'd be amazed what some
- 44:53marijuana can do to enhance your enjoyment of a comedy like
- 44:56Almost Hero. Specifically this.
- 44:58I didn't need it and I'm fine. But this opens up a whole scene
- 45:02with this doctors. He jumps out the window.
- 45:04Yeah, big chase sequence, big chase.
- 45:06Sequence out of all cars he gets into a.
- 45:10Training driving lesson. Driving school Driving school I.
- 45:14Don't know why that was struggling come up with that
- 45:16term but driving school? Keep you on your toes buddy, you
- 45:20pass with flying colours. Indeed.
- 45:22She's a little nervous to start, so good.
- 45:24Go get him. Stephanie.
- 45:26Yeah. The only part of this section
- 45:28that I didn't really find that funny was the whole giving the
- 45:31finger. I get it.
- 45:32It's. Yeah, it's Rd.
- 45:34Roll Well, that and follow the instructor.
- 45:36So whatever he says. You're going to do but.
- 45:38But the constant upgrading to the threat of the Doctor running
- 45:41into a missile sent into a fireworks factory, like you just
- 45:45keep upping it. Totally the ridiculous of it.
- 45:48And Nope, nothing to see here. Great line.
- 45:50Yeah. Great line.
- 45:51It's a very Mimi thing Yeah, yeah, Mimi.
- 45:54When the rise of memes in the world, I had no idea what that
- 45:59was. And so I would read people in
- 46:01texts saying it's a great meme got you, but I didn't know what
- 46:05that was. And so I read it as Mimi and I
- 46:09was like, what does it mean? Oh, me, me.
- 46:10That's what you're talking about me.
- 46:11When you say Mimi, I'm thinking the Drew Carey Show with Mimi.
- 46:14OK, never watched it. No, that's not what surprised me
- 46:17whatsoever. Ryan Styles, come on.
- 46:18He's. A funny guy.
- 46:19Canadian. Yeah.
- 46:20No, he's not. He's ish Canadian.
- 46:22Ish Styles. He's got dual citizenship, I
- 46:25believe. OK.
- 46:26Mockery's Canadian. Yeah, sure.
- 46:27That's that's for sure. Yeah, 100% Canadian.
- 46:29Couldn't be less. Much like Leslie Nielsen, of
- 46:31course. Also good at the deadpan humor.
- 46:34Another thing we've talked about this, what I love about the
- 46:36movie is taking the genre right and playing with it and messing
- 46:39with the tropes a little bit. And the next scene is like
- 46:42exactly what that is you're thinking about in in a Dark
- 46:45Place or double Indemnity or any of these like 50s Noirie movies.
- 46:50There's the scene of walking around in the voice over, voice
- 46:53over and the way he's going on and on and, and the lonely man's
- 46:58kind of stuff and he's. A great voice question.
- 47:00Great. He's doing hopscotch and at some
- 47:03point he's like and where was I? He's up in the middle in the
- 47:05woods, almost. Exactly.
- 47:07So he's like, and why is Ludwig doing this?
- 47:09And why did they send me here and where was I?
- 47:12It's such a the crystallization of taking the genre we love and
- 47:16finding the humor in it and making it not funny, like it's
- 47:20not designed to be funny. Because all of that up until
- 47:22where was I in the hopscotch, I guess, is pretty much like what
- 47:25it would be in a movie. Yeah.
- 47:27Anyway, just makes me chuckle. And luckily, the payoff of that
- 47:29is a nice dinner date with Jane. Very provocative, yeah.
- 47:33Considering this is her first date, she's already somehow in
- 47:35the apartment, possibly not wearing pants.
- 47:38Probably not. Yeah, it's got the long shirt,
- 47:40that look, you know the look I'm talking.
- 47:42About oh gosh, I know it. What is she making?
- 47:44Stir fry. It's like a roast.
- 47:47Yeah. Maybe.
- 47:48Wet and hot roast. Yes.
- 47:50Yeah. Very wet.
- 47:52Yeah, very wet. Well, it's not long before
- 47:54things get a little steamy. Yes, absolutely.
- 47:57They both practice safe sex, which is good.
- 48:00And I promote that. I certainly don't condone it.
- 48:02No, I support it. Yeah.
- 48:05The culmination of safe sex being these life-size human
- 48:09sized condoms. Yeah.
- 48:10Then you have the exaggerated humor, which has a place, I
- 48:14think so, yeah. I don't think it's the funniest
- 48:16thing, but it's funny. It's.
- 48:17A little on the nose, but I think it's funnier.
- 48:18Is the Goodyear blimp story after?
- 48:20Yeah, No, it's the worst. That's word play I can get on
- 48:23board. Yeah.
- 48:24Yeah. And you're not a word guy.
- 48:25Sometimes. Sometimes I'm in the mood but
- 48:28what I am in the mood for, and I think you are too, Phillip and I
- 48:32completely forgot this movie would even have a montage.
- 48:35Oh gosh, yes, they're in love. 2 goodies, but this one.
- 48:38Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I love this montage.
- 48:40Tell me about it. Well, in part, what I love about
- 48:43everything, exactly. Deep in the archive, Respect,
- 48:48Almost Famous. What I love about it is the
- 48:51song. First of all, something tells me
- 48:53I'm into something good in Herman's Hermits.
- 48:55They even showed at the end as as if they were watching.
- 48:57Videos as if we were watching videos.
- 48:59It's just a. Smart with Sam with the record.
- 49:01Great. Little button.
- 49:02I just think it's great. But watching these two, like you
- 49:04said, that she's in the apartment within hours of
- 49:07meeting him and now they're basically having an I'm we're
- 49:09we're so in love montage and the stuff that they've got them
- 49:12doing. My personal favorite out of all
- 49:15the things are happening again. I don't remember half of them.
- 49:16I'd have to watch it again because it's it's pretty quick
- 49:18cuts very fast, mustard on each other and then the bending.
- 49:22But my favorite, I think it's near the end, is they're on the
- 49:26beach and they cut to the beach a couple of times.
- 49:28They're holding hands. They're doing what you do on a
- 49:29beach with a loved one. I think you should know what I'm
- 49:32talking in Rocky Three. Yeah, Exactly.
- 49:33Exactly. And they basically clothesline
- 49:38the other couple doing sort of the same thing in slow motion.
- 49:42Just. I don't see it coming either.
- 49:43Like. What?
- 49:45Yeah. I just thought that part
- 49:47specifically was pretty hilarious.
- 49:48What I love is the tattoo for some reason, like the idea that
- 49:51within minutes of meeting these people, they're sitting and it's
- 49:54like a tight shot and they just go a little wider and they're
- 49:57both getting tattoos like this. It's so ridiculous that it just
- 50:00makes me chuckle, laugh and the big smiles throughout the whole
- 50:03time. And then ending with that is
- 50:05great and I believe the love, whatever you've just done there,
- 50:07I'm on board with the fact that I think that they're in love
- 50:11now. There's no reason to question
- 50:12it. I like it that he does the Irish
- 50:15heel kick. Have you ever?
- 50:15Done one of those. No, me neither I've.
- 50:17Tried because I think it's really cool I'm Cuban yeah there
- 50:20you go that's how that works we can't spend too much time in the
- 50:23romance because there's a crime that's true solve.
- 50:27Yep, that possibly could have been done by Nordberg.
- 50:30He's remember, he's he's got 24 hours.
- 50:32He's. DL and H.
- 50:33Yeah, but those are the stakes. Absolutely.
- 50:35You got to find out the truth or it's Nordberg.
- 50:37Yep. They think it might be him
- 50:39because we don't know why he was there in the 1st place at the
- 50:41harbor, which is kind of silly because he's a police officer.
- 50:44He's a. Constigating.
- 50:45Everyone should know. Yeah, yeah, I'm OK.
- 50:47With it though, yeah, no question.
- 50:49He's in. Ricardo Balta bombs.
- 50:51I'm saying that right. Balta bomb, bomb apartment and
- 50:54all the elegant stuff that we've already.
- 50:56The big vases. Yeah, everything.
- 50:58And he finds evidence. It's the most like specific.
- 51:02Yeah, I mean, here's how I will kill the queen.
- 51:05Exactly what you have to do that way.
- 51:07Go all in. Right?
- 51:07Totally. And he can't see it.
- 51:09So he got like, he's got the lighter, of course, burns the
- 51:11only evidence, of course, of course.
- 51:14And a fire ensues. He's trying to stop the vases
- 51:17from falling. And the whole place is just in
- 51:19shambles. Within like 30 seconds, it just
- 51:22massacred like everything that this guy loves, like the
- 51:25painting comes down priceless. Everything.
- 51:28It's a disaster and ends up on the balcony.
- 51:30Yeah, I have to tell you, this was a scene you.
- 51:34Got balcony problems? That I hated.
- 51:35You don't like balcony scenes? I don't mind balcony scenes.
- 51:38I don't know why when I when I when I watched this movie as a
- 51:42kid, this is the only part of the movie I felt drags and it's
- 51:46the only jokes in the movie. I don't find that funny.
- 51:48OK, that's that's fine. Like and I'm not holding against
- 51:51all, but watching. I think you are.
- 51:54History is proven this. Is not the case.
- 51:56On this podcast, but jokes about hanging on to the big Dicks and
- 52:00like making motions to to. That I liked.
- 52:03Yeah, to get on. That was funny.
- 52:04Climb up onto it. Yeah, the fact that it becomes
- 52:07an erection like I mean, there's.
- 52:09Funniness in it, like you said. Smile on his face.
- 52:11The statue. There are things that are that
- 52:13like you connect with that are funny and there's things that
- 52:15are funny objectively and there's things that are like
- 52:18subjectively funny. I look at that, I see that that
- 52:20is funny or could be, it's just not my humor.
- 52:23And I find the jokes are not enough to sustain for as long as
- 52:27the scene is from all the way through the apartment into the
- 52:31balcony and out. I'm like that's 7 or 8 minutes.
- 52:34It's the dry part of the movie to me.
- 52:36Oh, OK. Well, it's 4 minutes.
- 52:38OK, All right. Actually, I don't remember.
- 52:39But that that woman, beautiful breasts.
- 52:41That is true. That is true.
- 52:42Maybe. Is that enough for you?
- 52:44Yeah. Then unless the fire trucks are
- 52:47coming. He gets out of it, of course,
- 52:48and Jane sets up a meeting. That's right.
- 52:53With him and. On Ludwig's orders.
- 52:56Yes. To go meet him at the meat
- 52:57packing plant meat. Packing.
- 52:59Plant. They make hot dogs, it turns
- 53:01out. I guess so, we find out later.
- 53:04Oh, yes, that's what that is. Thank you.
- 53:07I wonder. I thought it was just like a
- 53:09joke. It is a joke.
- 53:10Yeah. Well, it's a comedy.
- 53:11Of course, yeah. Yeah, you haven't noticed.
- 53:14Anyway, he gets there and the guy just starts talking and
- 53:17shooting. I got a message, yeah.
- 53:19Yeah, just keep shooting. And he's like, stop shooting.
- 53:23I can't hear you. I think it's a cute.
- 53:26It's the funny line, Perfect, cute.
- 53:27It's a perfect crystallation of like, that scene has happened in
- 53:30100 other movies. And as an audience, we just
- 53:34accept it because they will adjust the volume so we hear
- 53:36what they're saying or whatever. And here's just like, calling it
- 53:39out, like, I can't hear you. Yeah.
- 53:41A funny way to look at a scene that we're all familiar with.
- 53:44And it's like a Seinfeld thing where you're like, I see this
- 53:47all the time, and now it's funny.
- 53:49And it was always funny, but I never saw it.
- 53:51Yeah. And now that I see it and you've
- 53:53seen it and made it funny, it's communal.
- 53:55It's forever funny. Yeah, we're all enjoying the
- 53:57moment now. That's it.
- 53:58Laundry. Seinfeld does so great.
- 54:00Laundry. We're all enjoying that moment.
- 54:01It's. Like we've all had this
- 54:02conversation about laundry and socks to ourselves or maybe
- 54:04laughter. We've where the Hell's and you
- 54:07turn it into a 3 minute bit. Yeah.
- 54:09And now it's like I can't lose a sock without thinking we gotta
- 54:13get out of here. Yeah.
- 54:14That's the genius of him. And that's the genius of this
- 54:16type of taking the genre and finding the humor in a scene
- 54:19that wouldn't otherwise be funny.
- 54:21And it ultimately kills the guy. That is funny.
- 54:23Well, I mean, what I found funny actually was that when he died,
- 54:27they've got the classic sinking hand, of course, in the and
- 54:31what? Terminator 2 maybe?
- 54:32Terminator 2 in 91 Batman maybe, but Joker in 89, that's the next
- 54:37year and if you're the Joker ends up going down the same.
- 54:40They're doing a parody of that could be.
- 54:42I thought it was kind of. Parody of a parody.
- 54:44A year later, yeah. So a lot of sinking hands.
- 54:47Yeah. That was the time for that.
- 54:48Yeah. It was a real zeitgeist thing.
- 54:50Hands were sinking, Hands were sinking, and nobody noticed
- 54:53until, with some hindsight, now we can finally absolutely see it
- 54:57for all. That's worth, and what's worth a
- 55:00lot is a plate at a dinner with the queen.
- 55:02I'm sure that's a couple bucks. Absolutely.
- 55:05If you didn't know already, Ricardo is the chairman.
- 55:08Yes, of course. And the next scene is Drebin
- 55:11coming in, and Ricardo's a little surprised to see him.
- 55:14But before we get that, we get a really funny scene.
- 55:16They're doing a pat down, just patting people down.
- 55:19Someone's in front of Ed. Yep.
- 55:22And then he's searching the pockets, but he's in the Ed's
- 55:24pockets. Who's behind the guy?
- 55:27He's finding Ed's stuff. Ed's wallet.
- 55:28He's got a gun, A picture of sleeping with your wife, Ed's
- 55:31wife. It's such a simple thing, but I
- 55:33just thought it was really funny.
- 55:34It's another example of don't think too hard because Ed would
- 55:37know that he's in his pocket. Yeah, like if you really think
- 55:40about it, but it's just too funny to to worry about.
- 55:42It and at some point Dreben is disoriented a little bit and
- 55:46sees that musket looks like it's pointing at the queen.
- 55:49He jumps on the queen, slides all the way down the table.
- 55:52Yeah, and that's the picture in the front news.
- 55:55Right there, that's the end of it.
- 55:57And then the joke is like, this is news.
- 55:58Like, come on, hear. Me, it's pretty, pretty
- 56:00newsworthy, I would say, trying to hump the Queen at a.
- 56:03Press conference. But this ultimately gets him
- 56:05kicked off the force. Yeah.
- 56:08And what does he find when he's cleaning out his, his his desk?
- 56:14He's going through the folder and he says, oh, it's the
- 56:17missing evidence. He was innocent, He.
- 56:21Got the chair two years ago and. He's like, whatever, he throws
- 56:25it away and he starts throwing stuff away.
- 56:27All these commendations and pride and awards.
- 56:29It's not your desk. It's not your desk, right?
- 56:32Stop. Great scene, small, great scene.
- 56:36It's really good. And this movie is so tight.
- 56:39Oh my God. We're 20 minutes before the end
- 56:41of the movie at this point, and we're at the baseball diamond.
- 56:44It's 87 minutes long or something and it's just like
- 56:47stadium, sorry. Diamond's more of a, you know.
- 56:50More of like a ballpark. Kids in a ball diamond.
- 56:53Pearl Harbor you want to get to. AI was thinking about that movie
- 56:57and I was reminded how good it is just by thinking of it.
- 56:59Just thinking about it's like this movie does everything.
- 57:01Wow, gets to the episode again. You let me.
- 57:03Know it makes you feel, man. It makes you feel.
- 57:05Yeah, I feel. I'll.
- 57:06Yeah, I feel. Dread, but this movie definitely
- 57:10makes you laugh. But yes, we're setting up the
- 57:12final 20 minutes of this movie. This movie is only an hour, 20
- 57:16minutes. That's.
- 57:16What I'm saying 87 minutes. Easy breezy.
- 57:18I'm going to go out on a limb here and say your favorite scene
- 57:21is coming up. Oh, absolutely.
- 57:22Yeah. It's a sequence even.
- 57:24A sequence, your favorite sequence slash scene is
- 57:27approaching us. We're not quite there yet.
- 57:29Everything about the baseball presentation now, I don't know
- 57:33anything about baseball. No, you don't.
- 57:35But the idea that you've got a seven man booth, including
- 57:38Doctor Joyce Brothers, yeah, that's exaggeration.
- 57:41Noted Sex therapist like, tells me that there's probably too
- 57:45many people in the booth. Yeah.
- 57:47But Dreben, who's off the force, for all intents and purposes,
- 57:50he's got to get in there. He's.
- 57:52Got to find a way. So what do you do?
- 57:54You find the closest soprano? Yeah, you try and find them.
- 57:59Not the family. No, no, no, not a not a
- 58:01Gandolfini singer surviving Christmas.
- 58:03Fans, of course that's my fault. That's my fault.
- 58:06You brought it on yourself. Yeah, and he's going to do the
- 58:08national anthem. That's right, Enrique Palazzo.
- 58:11Yeah, and doesn't know most of the words.
- 58:13So good, but the words he uses is hilarious.
- 58:16It's fantastic. Yeah, it's great.
- 58:17It's funny that anytime anybody's messed up in a
- 58:19national anthem is always funny. But what I also like is the
- 58:22subtlety of all the cops trying to arrest him, but also trying
- 58:27to respect the song. Yeah.
- 58:28OK, you have to wait so. They're like inching closer and
- 58:30closer, but hands on the heart still it's.
- 58:33Just like a great visual gag. And then obviously he finishes
- 58:36and runs off into the dog out again and swaps out from tenor
- 58:40to umpire. Yes, they know that someone on
- 58:44the field is going to kill the queen or try.
- 58:47That's right, in the 7th inning stretch, yes.
- 58:48That's all the information they got.
- 58:50That's it. Can't prove it.
- 58:51That's what they have. Stop it.
- 58:53Yeah. What I think is really funny too
- 58:55is while he's in this changeover from what we don't know yet,
- 58:59he's run away as the opera singer and we're watching the
- 59:01Jumbotron. Oh yeah.
- 59:04And now, as a sensitive man with sensitive comedic tastes, did
- 59:08you enjoy any of. The the misplays, Broad, the
- 59:12misplays. The mall of a tiger on the field
- 59:16again. The car, I think, yeah, it's
- 59:17designed to escalate, right? It starts out as what you'd
- 59:20actually see on TV today. Yeah.
- 59:21Bloopers run into each other. Absolutely.
- 59:24And then we get into the tiger at second base.
- 59:27The car comes before that, of course.
- 59:28I think a car is the first. One it could be.
- 59:30And I love it. I mean, the guy where he loses
- 59:33his head, that's just all in silliness.
- 59:35But yeah, that serves his purpose.
- 59:37What I love after that, all of that is.
- 59:38How about that? And the guy next to him is just
- 59:41like, shocked but presenting it like it's just baseball.
- 59:45Yeah, How about that Great plays out there.
- 59:46A guy just got mauled by a tiger.
- 59:48It's really. How far are the writers?
- 59:50They want to take it, right? Like it's.
- 59:51They're in a room and they just keep amping it up until they get
- 59:54to the point of ridiculousness. And as long as they're not doing
- 59:57it too often, it's always too ridiculous.
- 59:59I think you have to pick and choose.
- 1:00:01Your moments, and this movie in particular has done pretty well.
- 1:00:04Yeah, I think the movie does a great job of building up the
- 1:00:06escalation of jokes and silliness and then releasing the
- 1:00:09valve and going back to simple, and then building it back up to
- 1:00:11silly gross, and then releasing the valve and getting it back to
- 1:00:14simple. I think the head off is
- 1:00:16probably, I think a little. I wouldn't gone that far, sure,
- 1:00:19but that's just me. That's just you.
- 1:00:20That's just me. I can ignore that and still
- 1:00:22enjoy the rest. Of course, I am a horror movie
- 1:00:24fan. I would have liked more blood
- 1:00:25and guts. Of course, if you're going to
- 1:00:26cut someone's head off, let's make it count.
- 1:00:29Absolutely. Find out Driven the umpire.
- 1:00:39He's the umpire to the plate umpire, that's right.
- 1:00:41And he doesn't know what he's doing.
- 1:00:42He has no idea. First pitch comes in right down
- 1:00:44the middle. Yeah, he's not making a call.
- 1:00:47Nope. And then everyone's looking at
- 1:00:48him too, the whole crowd, and he's like straight question
- 1:00:50mark. Yep.
- 1:00:52Crowd loses their minds and this begins the best scene of the
- 1:00:55movie. Arguably, arguably, I do enjoy
- 1:00:57it. His reactions to oh gosh, like
- 1:01:00the first one, he's late on, right?
- 1:01:01Yep. Second one, I don't know if he's
- 1:01:03already early on it. I think he, he, it's right on
- 1:01:06time, right? On time and then the third one,
- 1:01:08by the time the ball is barely left the glove, he has deer.
- 1:01:14Right, and he starts doing the dancing more.
- 1:01:16Elaborate. It's not just strike.
- 1:01:17Yeah, it's now a big presentation.
- 1:01:19Moon walking splits up and down everything he's doing in this
- 1:01:24scene as the UMP is absolute. It's stunt double.
- 1:01:28Sure, pure genius. Whatever.
- 1:01:30My type, if you can call it my type of comedy.
- 1:01:33It is that it is right here. It is him getting off on the
- 1:01:35excitement of making the calls. Crowd loves the crowd the.
- 1:01:38Plate going from like the broom to a dust.
- 1:01:40Buster, I love vacuuming. You're a vacuum guy.
- 1:01:42I just vacuumed today for me too hours.
- 1:01:45Well, I went in hours, but I did a did a full on mop and vacuum.
- 1:01:48But yeah, just dust Buster to the full on dirt devil.
- 1:01:51I think it was product placement perhaps?
- 1:01:54It could be, could be it's just perfect and he's searching the
- 1:01:56players as they're coming up. And then that leads to the
- 1:01:59second montage of the movie, the I Love LA montage.
- 1:02:03So I love Herman's Hermits and I love Randy Newman.
- 1:02:05And we get just more of him trying to figure out who is the
- 1:02:10culprit and when he goes to search.
- 1:02:13The the pitcher now. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:16Those are things that you're not allowed to have.
- 1:02:17Vaseline. Yeah.
- 1:02:18And sandpaper. That's a big one.
- 1:02:20Yeah. That's common, right?
- 1:02:22That's a thing. Well, yeah.
- 1:02:23It's like to give you the edge. Absolutely.
- 1:02:25And he doesn't care, obviously. No.
- 1:02:27And the pitcher's like, oh, OK, great.
- 1:02:29Yeah. And then we get into a rundown.
- 1:02:30Now that's a very exciting play in baseball.
- 1:02:33Well, not really. 90% of the time he's out if the runner
- 1:02:37slash batter if he beats the rundown.
- 1:02:39That's impressive. OK.
- 1:02:40Yeah, but doesn't happen very often.
- 1:02:41Does it happen with umpires often?
- 1:02:43No, because this is another great scene that somehow from
- 1:02:47the plate the plate umpire has managed to get to.
- 1:02:50Yeah, things are getting a little out of control at this
- 1:02:52point. The crowd is on them now.
- 1:02:54The players, the coaches are all like, what the hell is going on
- 1:02:57here? They can't have it out exactly
- 1:02:58because they can't get to the 7th inning stretch.
- 1:03:00And the other umpire has taken umbrage, if you will.
- 1:03:02Yeah, he doesn't want any part of this other.
- 1:03:04No. But then what is Leslie
- 1:03:06Nielsen's character do? He throws.
- 1:03:07You're out of here. He throws out another umpire.
- 1:03:09I guess so. As long as you know baseball,
- 1:03:11you're gonna get a lot of this joke.
- 1:03:13I barely know baseball and you know that.
- 1:03:15This. Yeah.
- 1:03:15Well, you're a smart guy. It's true.
- 1:03:17You're smart. Extra.
- 1:03:18Yeah, you're not slow. Ends up in a full out brawl.
- 1:03:22That's right. And then me and Reggie Jackson.
- 1:03:25Do you know Reggie Jackson? Is he not personally?
- 1:03:27Not personally. He is.
- 1:03:29Is he a name? 88, yeah.
- 1:03:31Like he's like this guy somebody.
- 1:03:32He's before me mostly, but I know of him.
- 1:03:35But I didn't really watch him. He just probably retired when I
- 1:03:39got into watching the Expos and the Jays.
- 1:03:42But yeah, he's iconic. He's a big name.
- 1:03:43I don't know baseball. I don't know any of.
- 1:03:45These but you know Reggie. I only know him through this
- 1:03:47movie. Yeah, he's great.
- 1:03:48So to me, if you're casting somebody that's a baseball
- 1:03:50player that's actually a baseball player, they're
- 1:03:52probably a name. Yeah.
- 1:03:53The credits. Yeah.
- 1:03:54Reggie Jackson as as himself. I meant more like a noteworthy.
- 1:03:58OK. Oh, he's definitely noteworthy.
- 1:03:59And he gets out of the scrum. Yeah.
- 1:04:01Kind of tunnels his windows. And got the gun, obviously, of
- 1:04:05course. Makes sense in the second base.
- 1:04:06Yeah, walking towards the Queen. To me, this is the flaw of the
- 1:04:10movie. I'm going to nitpick.
- 1:04:13Right, okay. If the mission is to kill the
- 1:04:15queen, Yeah. And you got a gun in your hand.
- 1:04:18Yeah, why do you need to be 6 inches away from the queen?
- 1:04:20Reggie, you got a gun. He might have a good eye for the
- 1:04:23ball. But wants to be.
- 1:04:26Sure, but he's not very good at aiming.
- 1:04:27Yeah, yeah, it's funny to me. Ironically, Again, I don't care,
- 1:04:30I'm just teasing, But the idea that he continues to get closer
- 1:04:33and closer and closer to the Queen, and no one's, like,
- 1:04:35checking why there's a baseball player on top of the dugout now.
- 1:04:38Like, anyway, yeah, it's a little silly.
- 1:04:41Yeah, this movie's a little silly.
- 1:04:42It's only in that part where I'm just like just shooter.
- 1:04:44It might be a a glitch in the bracelet programming.
- 1:04:47Could be where there's a vicinity issue with it.
- 1:04:50Yeah, it's the first model, so it's true.
- 1:04:53Yeah. But luckily Dreven stops him,
- 1:04:55thanks to the handy dandy. Yeah.
- 1:04:57Hits a woman. Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:58Three stories up. A larger lady.
- 1:05:01Sure. Heavy set, as my dad would say.
- 1:05:03How are her breasts? Proportions, I imagine, and
- 1:05:08falls on Reggie. That's right, saves the day,
- 1:05:10saves the queen. And the woman who got him fired
- 1:05:13is like, you're the hero, of course.
- 1:05:15And who better to save the day than Enrico Palazzo?
- 1:05:18Yeah, everyone's chanting that name being the tenor.
- 1:05:21But then we see Ricardo dragging up not Jane, but a dummy, so
- 1:05:27much a dummy. And it's such a thing that you
- 1:05:29could not have bothered to do. And it's so it's not a big
- 1:05:32thing, but it's funny. Yeah.
- 1:05:34It's a choice, but the exaggerated motion is designed
- 1:05:36to highlight the fact that these things are often double s or
- 1:05:40whatever else, right. Watching her get just thrown
- 1:05:43around as they're making their way up up the stairs, it's
- 1:05:45pretty funny stuff. And we basically have our final
- 1:05:48confrontation. Yeah, when it gets a little
- 1:05:50sappy, a little bit right where he's like, you don't like J and
- 1:05:54that. You don't like sappy at all?
- 1:05:55I I'm a sappy guy. I know that's the joke.
- 1:05:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06:00But I'm in this context, you know?
- 1:06:02No, maybe not in this. Let's get to the end.
- 1:06:04Yeah, I'm ready for the movie to end.
- 1:06:06OK, well, we have not quite a die hard one death scene, but
- 1:06:09you know, splat, eh? He's.
- 1:06:11Flat and then, coincidentally, is a steamroller and a marching
- 1:06:16band and. Did that happen to Ed's dad?
- 1:06:19Watching, Ed reacted. Yet.
- 1:06:22Oh, Frank, that's not my that one.
- 1:06:24Go on. It's kind of dumb.
- 1:06:26It's so dumb, but all that happening, that bracelet device
- 1:06:29thing, it goes off because they step on it and now she's
- 1:06:32triggered triggers. Jane and Frank's got to talk her
- 1:06:34out of it. Yeah.
- 1:06:35And that's a pretty good job of it.
- 1:06:36You do it well. Yeah, he has.
- 1:06:37These are our hill. This is our beans.
- 1:06:39Yeah, that's a Casablanca. Right it is, remember.
- 1:06:41Absolutely. Yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:06:42Yeah, great. Great moment.
- 1:06:44Not a very memorable ending. Personally.
- 1:06:45No, but no, like I don't really remember once he's dead.
- 1:06:49That's the thing. I don't recollect it even like.
- 1:06:51All that savvy stuff, I'm like, I'm done with this movie.
- 1:06:53And not in a bad way. Like that's the end.
- 1:06:55I I do feel they have something. Oh, absolutely.
- 1:06:57I'm happy for them. Yeah, they'll be wrong.
- 1:06:59I'll. I'll send the toaster.
- 1:07:01Yes, on the registry. I'm there.
- 1:07:02Why is it always the toaster? That's what I always go for,
- 1:07:04toasters. That's it.
- 1:07:06I just, I got to the end of this movie and I was like, I'm done.
- 1:07:09We're not done. Talk to me.
- 1:07:11OJ that's right. It's finally out of the
- 1:07:12hospital. Yeah, OJ makes his way to the
- 1:07:14game. Back, I guess, and then he's
- 1:07:17flung. That's right.
- 1:07:20Poor guy. Just like a spring loaded.
- 1:07:23Would you ever say poor guy to OJ Simpson?
- 1:07:26Like, oh man, this guy's been through bad stuff.
- 1:07:28He had a rough go. Poor guy.
- 1:07:30Yeah, yeah, he wrote a book about this movie.
- 1:07:34Oh yeah, no, he didn't. OK, I was trying to connect.
- 1:07:36I'd read that. If I did it, he didn't write
- 1:07:38that. Book.
- 1:07:39He did write that, Yeah. Did he do it?
- 1:07:40Hypothetically speaking, if I were to, if I want to do it,
- 1:07:43this is how I would have done it.
- 1:07:44But I didn't do it. Don't worry about it.
- 1:07:46Well. We'll never know.
- 1:07:48Wow. We'll never know.
- 1:07:49Truth. It's lost to the time.
- 1:07:51Maybe. Kato Kaelin.
- 1:07:52Knows. Oh gosh, yeah, he knows too
- 1:07:54much. Anyways, Phil, give me your
- 1:07:55final thoughts of this adventure that we've gone off for an hour
- 1:07:59and 20. Minutes that's right, I I've not
- 1:08:01seen this movie in so long and I was so not interested in
- 1:08:06watching the remake yeah yeah. The trailer like I in context
- 1:08:11content, I was like, I don't give a damn.
- 1:08:13And then when you suggested this, I was like, oh, I haven't
- 1:08:16watched this movie in 30 years and I put it in and immediately
- 1:08:20I was like right back into it lasted and I was like, this is a
- 1:08:23fucking hilarious. Movie aged so well.
- 1:08:25So well, despite the fact that some of this stuff like the
- 1:08:28beginning, the prologue, people you may or may not recognize,
- 1:08:30but the jokes are funny. Always.
- 1:08:32Yeah, I enjoyed this movie The most this time, yeah, I've aged,
- 1:08:36it's matured. I've matured in some ways.
- 1:08:38But the question remains, are you more inclined to watch the
- 1:08:43Liam Neeson Naked Gun? No, no, it's strange that way.
- 1:08:47I heard it's pretty good. I keep hearing that and I just
- 1:08:50don't trust it. What?
- 1:08:51I want you to do a little bit of homework for you, OK?
- 1:08:53Watch the Naked Gun, the original, the one that we just
- 1:08:56watched. Watch the trailer.
- 1:08:58OK. Interesting to see if that
- 1:08:59excites despite. To see if it's.
- 1:09:01Actually, I know it's great. And then?
- 1:09:02Yeah, because maybe it's a trailer problem with this type
- 1:09:04of movie. Could be I mean, comedies are
- 1:09:06tough to sell anyway. Yeah, either the jokes are all
- 1:09:09in giving away the whole movie or not.
- 1:09:10I don't know. I'm.
- 1:09:10Going to watch it. I'm going to watch it.
- 1:09:12I'll I don't know if I'll pay for it, but it's 499 rental, I
- 1:09:15think. I don't know.
- 1:09:17But I just have 0 interest in it.
- 1:09:18But watching this, I'm like, I'll watch 22 1/2. 2 1/2 men.
- 1:09:23No Naked Gun 2 1/2 probably before I would watch.
- 1:09:28Yeah, that I don't know if it's one of those sequel problem
- 1:09:30things, I. Don't remember it being.
- 1:09:31Very. I'm not going right back to it,
- 1:09:33but it might later this year, maybe later this year Will.
- 1:09:35But yeah, it's not a movie that I'm excited about, but this is
- 1:09:37just like a perfect encapsulation of 85 minutes and
- 1:09:40yeah, fantastic. And I think it's a nice switch.
- 1:09:42We've done some pretty serious films with Cuckoo.
- 1:09:45That's true. Shawshank and Silence of the
- 1:09:47Lambs. So.
- 1:09:48Yeah, it's time for a. Lap that we that we mix it up a
- 1:09:51little bit. So I'm glad you enjoyed it,
- 1:09:53Phil. Absolutely, folks, and hopefully
- 1:09:55you enjoyed this conversation as well.
