- 0:26Terry Bon Show on the All Cover podcast.
- 0:28I'm your co-host, Ronnie Sanders, and
- 0:31[music] we're joined today by former
- 0:33Auburn head coach Terry Balden and
- 0:35former Georgia head coach Jim Don.
- 0:36[music]
- 0:38>> Coach, good to be with you.
- 0:39>> Hey, always good to be with two of my
- 0:41old friends here. Uh, we're all in the
- 0:42fourth quarter except you. [laughter]
- 0:45>> Yeah, I was going to say that throws
- 0:46Ronnie a little further along than he
- 0:48wants to be, I think. But you and I in
- 0:50the same boat, I think. But Jim, so good
- 0:53to see you. I uh I can't hardly see you
- 0:56when I don't think about uh of course
- 0:58our our first kind of acquaintances back
- 1:00when you were the head coach at Georgia
- 1:02and me at Auburn. But we had two
- 1:05whatever you want to call them tough
- 1:06games, heck of a good football game.
- 1:08Looking back uh fun games, but tough
- 1:11ones 1996 and 97 we had two pretty good
- 1:15football games against each other.
- 1:17>> Well, I can tell you one thing. We were
- 1:19very fortunate to win that one in 96 and
- 1:22then of course you completely just
- 1:24destroyed our chances to win the SEC in
- 1:2797. We were patting oursel on the back
- 1:29for beating Florida and everything and
- 1:31had two weeks and you came in there with
- 1:33Dame and Craig and we couldn't get off
- 1:35the field on defense. a brilliant game
- 1:37plan you had and but uh hey we had some
- 1:40good matches over the years and always
- 1:43enjoyed uh playing against you and a lot
- 1:45of respect for you and your dad and
- 1:47Tommy and whole Bowen family. I'm a big
- 1:49Bowen fan fan all the way.
- 1:52>> A lot of people don't remember the 90 I
- 1:54know the 96 team for those of our
- 1:56listeners who don't remember was the the
- 1:59first year they had overtime in college
- 2:01football and we went four overtimes in
- 2:04that game. y'all scored on the very last
- 2:06play of the game. Then we lost in four
- 2:09overtimes. Uh uh those are always tough
- 2:12losses, but I can still remember the
- 2:14athletes y'all have. And two things I
- 2:16remember. Robert Alexander was what a
- 2:18Robert and Robert Edwards, the running
- 2:20back. I thought he was a defensive back
- 2:22earlier, but you moved him to running
- 2:24back. And what a great running back he
- 2:26was.
- 2:27>> Yeah. You know, I didn't really recruit
- 2:29Robert Orheim, but uh
- 2:31>> fortunately for me when I got here, we
- 2:33had them and we got into that overtime
- 2:36and that that situation. I'll never
- 2:38forget, you know, they play that game uh
- 2:40back and forth on the SEC network once
- 2:43in a while just to and right before it
- 2:45shows my son who was in graduate school
- 2:47there on the sideline coming up to me
- 2:50and talking to me. He was he was just a
- 2:52fan then. And uh he told me he said,
- 2:55"Dad, I usually don't tell you what to
- 2:57do, but you're crazy if you don't give
- 2:59it to Robert Edwards every play in
- 3:00overtime." So [laughter]
- 3:02>> he did.
- 3:04>> We did that and we were able I think we
- 3:06you were a little worn down defensively.
- 3:09>> We could You are exactly right. I
- 3:11remember, you know, we had Tequilo
- 3:13Spikes at linebacker and he was so
- 3:16exhausted he couldn't even, you know, he
- 3:17was making almost all of our plays, but
- 3:20by the end of the game, he was he was
- 3:22worn out, too. And we just got we got
- 3:24worn down uh that football game, but it
- 3:27was it was a great one. And then uh the
- 3:29next year, you know, the next year, I
- 3:30don't know if you remember, but we had a
- 3:32week, we had lost a huge game to to to
- 3:37Mississippi State and got upset and I
- 3:40had a week off and y'all were
- 3:41outstanding. And so, I don't know if you
- 3:43remember, but I changed kind of changed
- 3:45our offense. I put a a wing back. I put
- 3:47a second tight end at wing and kind of
- 3:50got some power going and moved Fred
- 3:52Beasley to tail back. And I do remember
- 3:54you had Kirby Smart playing safety
- 3:56because I think Kirby made a few tackles
- 3:58that game.
- 4:00>> Yeah, we couldn't uh we couldn't stop
- 4:02you that night. I mean, we we it was a
- 4:04high-scoring game. It was a good game
- 4:05plan. And you look back to some of the
- 4:08people in that game. Kirby Smart, Mike
- 4:10Boowbo, Will Muschamp was working with
- 4:12you also.
- 4:14>> Uhuh. Jimbo, uh you know, you you had to
- 4:17teach Jimbo how to coach. That's what
- 4:19happened. [laughter]
- 4:21>> Yeah. Don't don't don't ask Jimmo that
- 4:23question. He'll reverse that to me. But
- 4:25he was awful. He was the
- 4:26>> And Tommy and Tommy B too. So
- 4:29>> yeah, we had and we had Tommy. We had we
- 4:31had a good Rick Trickett. You remember
- 4:32old Rick Trickett? We had Rick Trickett
- 4:34with us. And
- 4:34>> yeah, you know, Ronnie was just telling
- 4:36me that Rick might be going back to
- 4:39coaching up there with West Virginia.
- 4:41What is he 77 years old or something? 77
- 4:44he went
- 4:45>> yeah he's
- 4:46>> you know he uh when I when I was a
- 4:48player at West Virginia you know a lot
- 4:50of people don't re remember you may did
- 4:52you know Kurt Signetti's father Frank at
- 4:54all Franketti
- 4:55>> I knew Frank because Greg Williams you
- 4:57know who
- 4:59>> coached from played with me I knew Frank
- 5:02through him and uh and I knew all those
- 5:05West Virginia people once we got up
- 5:07there to Marshall I I met a lot more of
- 5:09them
- 5:09>> yeah Rick Trickett was actually a
- 5:11defensive line coach when I played in
- 5:13Tommy played for uh Frank was the head
- 5:15coach. He was my dad's offensive
- 5:17coordinator. Kurt Kurt Signday was about
- 5:19five he was about five years behind us.
- 5:21He was but uh we uh Rick Rick Trickett
- 5:25was a defensive line coach when I I
- 5:27became a GA and Tommy Nick Sabin was the
- 5:30secondary coach. Uh I think Greg
- 5:32Williams had left after my dad left
- 5:34maybe or a year after uh after Frank's
- 5:36first or second year. Uh but Greg
- 5:39Williams what a great coach he was too.
- 5:41And then uh but Rick Trick was on that
- 5:43staff and it was funny. But but you also
- 5:45went to Marshall. I think a lot of
- 5:47people uh you won a national
- 5:49championship uh and of course you're in
- 5:51the Hall of Fame. The College Football
- 5:52Hall of Fame won the National
- 5:54Championship at Marshall. But you know I
- 5:57was thinking how many years after the
- 5:59after the plane crash was was where did
- 6:02you go in there? About 10 or 10 or 11
- 6:04years after that. It was it happened in
- 6:06uh 71 and so I went I got the job in 90
- 6:10but you know
- 6:10>> Oh 90 it was about about 19 years.
- 6:12>> But that town just uh really was so
- 6:16happy to finally start winning that we
- 6:18had a lot of support and built the new
- 6:20stadium and were able to get some good
- 6:22players in there. We didn't uh we left
- 6:25them some good guys too. They didn't
- 6:26lose the game for two years after we
- 6:28left.
- 6:29Randy Moss and Chad Pennington and
- 6:32>> Puit didn't
- 6:32>> Leftwitch the quarterback Leftwwich. Was
- 6:34it Leftwitch?
- 6:35>> Yeah, Leftwitch came after me, but he
- 6:37was good.
- 6:38>> We had a good run up there. But also
- 6:40remember uh Rich Rod was coaching up
- 6:44there when I was at Marshall. He used to
- 6:45come down to our clinics and uh he he
- 6:47had a lot of good information even then
- 6:49as a young coach and I've kept up with
- 6:52him over the years and I think he'll get
- 6:54it going again up there at West
- 6:55Virginia. And of course, of course,
- 6:57Nick, uh, when I was coaching at NC
- 7:00State, Nick was playing defensive back
- 7:02for Kent State. In the first game I ever
- 7:04coached as a offensive coach, he was
- 7:07playing defensive back for Kent State
- 7:09there at NC State. Well, you know, Nick
- 7:12Nick played at Manonga High School in
- 7:14West Virginia and my dad recruited my
- 7:17dad was the offensive coordinator at
- 7:19West Virginia in the late 60s and he
- 7:21recruited Nick, but he really Nick was a
- 7:23little bit short as you know and so he
- 7:25really was recruiting a couple of
- 7:26running backs on that team and signed
- 7:28them and uh but the but Don James who
- 7:31was the head coach at Kent, you remember
- 7:32Don James, he was an assistant coach at
- 7:35Florida State with my dad and of course
- 7:37you coached at Florida State maybe uh a
- 7:39little bit after that. My dad was there
- 7:41and Don James was there in the early
- 7:4260s. Uh and uh and then Nick played for
- 7:46Don Then Don James left to go to Kent
- 7:47State. My dad left to go to uh West
- 7:50Virginia. But I want to I was I thought
- 7:52of this when I thought of West. Do you
- 7:54remember uh Red Dawson? Remember Red
- 7:57Dawson that was at the only guy that
- 7:59survived the plane crash.
- 8:00>> Oh man.
- 8:01>> Yeah. His brother uh Rhett played for me
- 8:03at Florida State. And so
- 8:04>> Oh, that's right. So when I got to uh
- 8:07Marshall, uh you know, Red was like you
- 8:10mentioned was the only guy that didn't
- 8:13wasn't on the plane. He recruiting trip
- 8:16and he he it was such a hard thing for
- 8:18him to go back and watch games and all,
- 8:20but I reached out to him and said,
- 8:22"Look, I know how hard it is and
- 8:24everything, but you know, I'd like for
- 8:26you to come to practice and get
- 8:27involved. I know your brother." And we
- 8:29started developing a relationship. and
- 8:32he gradually got back where he could go
- 8:34to the games. But you you know it's got
- 8:35to be traumatic thinking about all those
- 8:37guys, people dying and everything, but
- 8:39but he he was a big part in helping us
- 8:42up there. He was in construction. He
- 8:44actually helped us build a practice
- 8:46field up there. He was great.
- 8:49>> Yeah, I remember read up there. Well, in
- 8:50fact, I interviewed for that job. I was
- 8:52too young. The dear George Chomp got the
- 8:55job. I want to say that was 85 maybe.
- 8:57But I interviewed for it. It was too
- 8:59young. Didn't get it. And then George
- 9:01Shamp did a great job too when he was
- 9:03there I think 85 or 86. But a lot of
- 9:07people don't realize you know the movie
- 9:08we are Marshall and it's and I had
- 9:10forgotten you coach Rhett because my dad
- 9:12was the receiver coach at Florida State
- 9:14634 and five and he coached Red Dawson
- 9:18and Fred Blitnikov uh at that those were
- 9:20his two wide receivers or tight end wide
- 9:23receivers back in those days and uh uh
- 9:25and that was kind of my dad's connection
- 9:27to Marshall. Red was on the coaching
- 9:29staff when my dad went to became the
- 9:31head coach at at West Virginia. Uh when
- 9:34he was
- 9:34>> Did your dad was he coaching at Florida
- 9:37State in ' 67?
- 9:38>> No. No. He he was there 634 and five and
- 9:42then he went to he played for I don't
- 9:44know if you remember Jim Carlin. He went
- 9:46he went to play for to be the offensive
- 9:48coordinator for Jim Carlin at West
- 9:50Virginia in ' 66 and became the head
- 9:52coach in 70. Yeah, we played Florida
- 9:55State down there in ' 67 when I But
- 9:57anyhow, a lot of reminiscing here, but I
- 9:59know Ronniey's chomping at the bit to
- 10:01bust me about something here. So, what
- 10:03you got going on there, Ronnie?
- 10:05>> Let's get your take on the playoff if uh
- 10:07if that's okay. [laughter]
- 10:12>> I'm just telling you right now, I can't
- 10:14can't believe how good these games are
- 10:16going to be. And I know Terry's fired up
- 10:17about it, but you got four really good
- 10:19interesting matchups. And uh certainly
- 10:22uh how these teams have evolved over the
- 10:26year has been pretty impressive. And
- 10:28with uh both uh myself and Terry's
- 10:31background and one doubleA, you know,
- 10:33where you had to play so many games to
- 10:35get into play and then you're in the
- 10:37playoffs and play four other games. you
- 10:40know, the health and conditioning and
- 10:42the strength of your team at this part
- 10:44of the year is so vital to be fresh and
- 10:47be able to have some injured players
- 10:50maybe get back and not have injured
- 10:52guys. But and then you're going to have
- 10:53some quick turnarounds, you know, like
- 10:55as soon as you play this week, then
- 10:57you're playing next week and then it's
- 10:58pretty quick. Three big physical games
- 11:01to win it all. But, uh, we got some good
- 11:03matchups. So, anything you want to ask
- 11:05about it, I'll try to help you with
- 11:07>> Yeah, I think Go ahead. Good, Ronnie.
- 11:10>> Oregon and uh and Texas Tech. I mean,
- 11:12Texas Tech's front seven is about as
- 11:14impressive as anybody in the country.
- 11:16>> Yeah. I mean, they made a move there
- 11:18financially to get a good front there
- 11:20and they've done a good job and you
- 11:22know, I've been by myself now and my
- 11:25wife passed away four years ago, so I I
- 11:27get a chance to watch a little more ball
- 11:29than I normally would outside of
- 11:30Georgia. But, you know, I've looked at
- 11:32Tech and I think they really have an
- 11:35excellent defense and their offense
- 11:38doesn't show me quite as much as maybe
- 11:40some of these other teams. And I think
- 11:41that's going to be their their problem
- 11:43against a team with the speed that
- 11:45Oregon has is I don't know if they can
- 11:47match the point productivity that maybe
- 11:50Oregon or they've played the schedule
- 11:52that Oregon has. even though I don't
- 11:54think the Big 10's that great, but uh
- 11:56you know, with the exception of BYU and
- 11:58Utah, I don't know who really uh Texas
- 12:01Tech has played, but I got to go with uh
- 12:04I know you got some ties out there, but
- 12:06I'm really high on Dan Lanning. You
- 12:07know, he was here did a terrific job for
- 12:10Kirby and is an outstanding young coach.
- 12:13Terry would be really impressed with
- 12:14him. I mean, he's a lot like you and
- 12:16your dad and all very involved with the
- 12:18players and just a very smart guy that
- 12:21uh that gets it. I think he's a rising
- 12:24star uh that's going to be, you know,
- 12:26there for a long time.
- 12:28>> And this game again was a uh it was a I
- 12:31think it was a one and a half point
- 12:32spot. I think it's now at a two and a
- 12:34half point spot in favor of um I think
- 12:37it's in favor of Texas Tech right now as
- 12:40far as that's a tossup kind of game. I I
- 12:43really think these are really two teams
- 12:44that I say if you had to pick two teams
- 12:46out of that bunch that people probably
- 12:48don't think are going to win the
- 12:49championship, but they have enough
- 12:51talent, if they put it all together and
- 12:53play just right, I think these two
- 12:56teams, uh, especially since we in the
- 12:58Southeast, we we probably don't respect
- 12:59the West Coast well enough. We don't
- 13:02watch the Big 12 that much, but I do
- 13:04think these two teams uh especially the
- 13:06talent that they were able to get with
- 13:08the NIL at tennis at Texas Tech. And
- 13:11then the amazing, you know, Lanning, he
- 13:13he's kind of like Georgia, they play
- 13:14great defense and they run the football.
- 13:16You know, they want to run it and they
- 13:18people think of them as being a wideopen
- 13:20Oregon type of of uh flamboyant, but
- 13:24they can run that football and uh it
- 13:27should be a heck of a football game uh
- 13:29in those two. But I want to I'm going to
- 13:31go with take, you know, it's funny
- 13:33because I work Jim I do a ton of podcast
- 13:36every day and I work for a company out
- 13:37of New York and nobody wants to know
- 13:39who's going to win. They want to know
- 13:40who's going to beat the spread, you
- 13:41know, [laughter] that's a and nobody I
- 13:43mean I never get you and I are coaches.
- 13:45We couldn't gamble when we coach, you
- 13:47know, but everybody now's got a phone in
- 13:49their hand and they and they're putting
- 13:50$10 on this game or it's legal.
- 13:52>> Too easy. Too easy to bet. But I
- 13:54remember when I was coaching at OU and
- 13:57Yeah. Coach Switzer at 9:00 on Sunday
- 14:00night the uh the line would come out of
- 14:03Vegas and at 9:01 he would call me and
- 14:06he would say these guys must be better
- 14:08than I think they are. Of course
- 14:09[laughter] he didn't
- 14:11or or hey we we should be all right. He
- 14:13based it on that but of course he would
- 14:15watch the tape and all but it was always
- 14:17kind of funny. I knew I was gonna get
- 14:18that call. Hey these guys must be pretty
- 14:20good. But but I tell you, as far as
- 14:22those bets and everything, I told my
- 14:24guys out at the club,
- 14:26I thought the best bet in the history of
- 14:28the world would be uh BYU against
- 14:31Georgia Tech. I thought they, you know,
- 14:32that was like three and a half. And I
- 14:34said, "Hey, that they're going to kill
- 14:36Tech." And of course, they fumbled
- 14:38inside the 10 and and they didn't make
- 14:39it one time, but but they made a miracle
- 14:42two-point play and then scored and won
- 14:44by four. And I said, "Well, we had it
- 14:46all the way." But that shows [laughter]
- 14:49>> you know I'm the same as you. You and I
- 14:51and the funny thing was I said you know
- 14:53what I believe BYU is going to pull this
- 14:55game out and win the football game. I
- 14:57said there's one way Georgia Tech's
- 14:59going to win is that and that's if on
- 15:01the last drive Hannes King has the ball
- 15:03because nobody finishes better than
- 15:05Hannes King. And you know who in the
- 15:07heck threw an interception on the last
- 15:08drive? He did take him down but he did
- 15:11not
- 15:12>> he had that one guy in the end zone just
- 15:14threw it a little high but
- 15:15>> that's right. He had a remarkable career
- 15:17and just uh u one of the guys that
- 15:20coached him who left there, Buster
- 15:22Faulner, had I recruited him in high
- 15:24school and he's done a good job now.
- 15:26He's going to Florida. But uh but you
- 15:28know, Tech of course we feel about Tech
- 15:31like some of the Auburn field fans feel
- 15:33about Bama. But you know they're one and
- 15:35four in their last five games. They're
- 15:37trending the other way which is always
- 15:39>> makes me feel good to see Tech do that.
- 15:41But uh
- 15:43>> who's your next game, Ronnie? Who's your
- 15:45next one, buddy? So we got So we kind of
- 15:46we're kind of going both ways on Oregon.
- 15:48Uh I'm I'm gonna take Oregon with I
- 15:50think whether it's it was one and a
- 15:52half. It may be two and a half right
- 15:54now. But I'm going
- 15:56>> You're going with Oregon. And you're
- 15:57going with Oregon. I'm gonna go with
- 15:58Texas Tech, but it's it's kind of a
- 16:00tossup.
- 16:01>> All right. We'll see how we do on these.
- 16:04>> I'm gonna take the Ducks.
- 16:05>> Uh you take the Ducks. I'll take Texas
- 16:07Tech.
- 16:07>> What about Miami at Ohio State?
- 16:10>> [clears throat]
- 16:11>> Well, you know, when you look at uh
- 16:13Miami, I mean, their squad has certainly
- 16:16got a lot of athletes and they they
- 16:19really uh perplexing team. They look
- 16:21like they really can't be beaten and
- 16:23sometimes they beat themselves and
- 16:25sometime they make some really
- 16:27unbelievable coaching decisions. I know
- 16:29people would say the same thing about
- 16:31me, but you know, it looked like they
- 16:33put some of their players in the uh
- 16:35witness protection program during the
- 16:37game.
- 16:38>> [laughter]
- 16:39>> they just don't use them. And uh and and
- 16:41Beck is has been a good quarterback for
- 16:44Georgia and good but he he plays a lot
- 16:46better when they're in the lead. Uh I
- 16:48just think Ohio State another team that
- 16:50hadn't been tested much and when they
- 16:53were with all those fronts that Indiana
- 16:55made against them, it really kind of
- 16:57confused their running game. But Miami
- 17:00can play with them. But I just think
- 17:02that there's so many big play potential
- 17:04with Ohio State. I got to go with the
- 17:06Buckeyes.
- 17:08I I I don't think I'm ready to go
- 17:10against the Buckeyes on this one. I
- 17:11guess if we're talking money line or
- 17:13straight up, I think without a doubt.
- 17:16But I look at that nine and a half and
- 17:18I'm saying that's way too much for me. I
- 17:19I can't I I I think Miami will play well
- 17:23enough to stay within nine and a half.
- 17:25So again, but if it was straight up, I
- 17:27was betting straight up, I definitely
- 17:29would take Ohio State, but the spread
- 17:31right now nine and a half and I'm
- 17:33thinking
- 17:34>> I'd take Miami, too. I just thought we
- 17:36were picking the game, but
- 17:37>> Well, I am. I'm just No, and I am. I
- 17:38mean, you the money whether we pick the
- 17:40money line or pick the spread, but but
- 17:42the if I was on my other show, I would
- 17:44say I'm taking nine and a half, but Ohio
- 17:46State will win. But but Miami does have
- 17:49to me the talent, the the speed that
- 17:51Ohio State doesn't face every week. And
- 17:54uh and and I it's funny you said they
- 17:56make bonehead mistakes because they do.
- 17:58In the last two years, they've made some
- 18:00decisions that have cost them ball
- 18:02games. And I don't I try not to be
- 18:03critical of games, but they pay me to
- 18:06tell the truth when it comes to the
- 18:08games. And I just think they I just
- 18:09like, you know, they had two roughing
- 18:10the passing the last drive of the game
- 18:12in the last two games. They've had two
- 18:14roughing the passer calls when it was
- 18:17like the worst thing you could do is
- 18:18even come close to roughing the passer
- 18:21and both of them were were close but
- 18:23fairly legitimate. Uh, but I think they
- 18:26have the speed, but I think when Ohio
- 18:27State and I think Ohio State
- 18:29quarterback, as good as he's done, I
- 18:31think he leads the nation in percentage
- 18:34completion percentage, but he kind of
- 18:36got uh he was struggled a little bit
- 18:37against Ohio State when I mean against
- 18:39Indiana because they played so well. He
- 18:42struggled a little bit there. So anyway,
- 18:43I think Ohio State I'm with you. I think
- 18:44Ohio State wins a game, but if I was a
- 18:46betting man, I would take the nine and a
- 18:48half as you said you would.
- 18:50>> They're going to have to protect the
- 18:51guy. I mean, yeah, those guys come off
- 18:53the edge and all, but I don't see Ohio
- 18:56State being a team that can really pound
- 18:58you running the ball either. Like, you
- 19:01got to run right at Miami. I don't know
- 19:03if they can do that, but they got such
- 19:05explosive receivers on the edge. And and
- 19:07talking about Miami, too, they got that
- 19:09turnover at the end of the half against
- 19:11Ohio against Texas A&M
- 19:14>> and looked like they were trying to run
- 19:16the clock out instead of trying
- 19:17[laughter]
- 19:18some of those plays. They they must have
- 19:20drawn them up in fantasy football, but
- 19:22it was very poor. Very poor. And and and
- 19:25then Texas A&M, I was going to ask you
- 19:27your opinion because you always crafted
- 19:29some really good game plans. It was
- 19:32ridiculous that they didn't move their
- 19:33quarterback and sprint him out and they
- 19:35just sat him in the pocket the whole
- 19:37game at Marcel Reed. If they'd have
- 19:40moved him around, I think they could
- 19:41have won that game.
- 19:42>> Well, they definitely could. They gave
- 19:43up seven sacks and if they and he's very
- 19:46he's a dual threat. He can run very
- 19:48smooth and I I want to say he beat Notre
- 19:50Dame throwing on the run several times.
- 19:52He threw the final touchdown pass
- 19:54rolling out to his left and throwing the
- 19:56ball on the run. I I I felt the exact
- 19:58same way with that. Uh uh but you know
- 20:02what? You mentioned the the the last of
- 20:04the game. I I don't know if you agree
- 20:06with this, but ever since everybody has
- 20:07gone to no huddle and fast break and and
- 20:10it's not like it's been around for a
- 20:12long time. I don't think anybody knows
- 20:14how to run a pro a two-minute offense. I
- 20:17don't think anybody in the country, it's
- 20:19not the same thing. You can't throw
- 20:21short of a first. You know what? There's
- 20:22a whole one minute offense, whether
- 20:25you're going to call it a two-minute
- 20:26offense or one minute offense. It's a
- 20:28whole different deal cuz now every pass
- 20:31has got to go for a first down or an out
- 20:33of bounds. Uh or or you don't or you
- 20:36don't complete it. You don't throw
- 20:37underneath them. And everybody I watch
- 20:40just lines up just like they're still
- 20:42running. uh their no huddle offense and
- 20:44wasting time and and moving formations
- 20:47around. I said, "What are y'all doing?
- 20:49You're you're wasting your time on the
- 20:51wrong side of the 50. Waste your time."
- 20:53I mean, let save your time for the other
- 20:55side of the 50, but I don't think people
- 20:57can I I had the same problem late in my
- 20:59career when I started turning offense
- 21:01over to other people. I said, "What do
- 21:04you got your two-minute offense ready?"
- 21:05"Well, we just run our fast break." I
- 21:07said, "It ain't the same.
- 21:09>> Can't do that." and and you watch
- 21:11Georgia Tech at the end of the game,
- 21:12they wasted an important amount of time.
- 21:14But I think that the main thing with so
- 21:17many of these teams nowadays with these
- 21:19RPOS's and and all the different
- 21:22functions that you have with the fast
- 21:24break stuff is there's got to be a time
- 21:26in the game where you're just going to
- 21:27call a play and not try to outsmart
- 21:29everybody. just call the play and run it
- 21:31and don't worry about what the defense
- 21:33is in and execute because you know you
- 21:36you can't always have all the numbers on
- 21:38your side or everything lined up
- 21:40perfect. But if you got the good
- 21:41athletes just go to the guy and and and
- 21:44make the first down. But uh we could
- 21:46talk all day about philosophy here.
- 21:48>> Well, you know, but it's I I enjoy it
- 21:50because you coached over several
- 21:52different decades and I did too and and
- 21:55the a lot of the fast break hurry up.
- 21:58One of my dad things my dad loved doing
- 22:00is I he liked matchups. He says, "I'm
- 22:03going to find a way to get that ball to
- 22:04my best guy and I want to call a play
- 22:07and the quarterback's got to know when I
- 22:09call it that that's the guy I want to
- 22:11throw it to." And when you start playing
- 22:13fast break, no huddle and all that
- 22:15stuff. I swear you don't know where the
- 22:17quarterback's going to throw it. You're
- 22:18not even sure he's on the same page as
- 22:20you are because it changes so much. But
- 22:22anyway, it's pro probably a discussion
- 22:24for another day.
- 22:25>> Yeah. Let's hit let's hit your
- 22:28[clears throat] uh your dogs. How are
- 22:30they going to do against uh against Old
- 22:32Miss?
- 22:34>> One thing about our team, Ronnie and
- 22:36Terry, is is that our team has made some
- 22:39significant improvement over the year.
- 22:41You know, we've had such good talent the
- 22:43last few years that and you look at the
- 22:45NFL draft, which is indicative of that
- 22:47that we've and and they coach them up
- 22:50and everything, but we don't have near
- 22:52an amount of stars that we've had. And
- 22:54part part of that is the NIL and the
- 22:57guys leaving, not so much for money, but
- 22:59just playing time. We got nine guys
- 23:01starting around the country on defense
- 23:04that could be backups or be playing for
- 23:06us that would really help our depth. And
- 23:09we made some issues here with our guys
- 23:12and we let some guys go that to other
- 23:15schools at safety and brought some guys
- 23:16in that didn't pan out. So, our
- 23:19secondary has not been what's a typical
- 23:21Kirby Smart type secondary early in the
- 23:24year, but now that he's gotten some
- 23:26younger guys and developed them, our
- 23:28defense is starting to be the kind of
- 23:30defense that you expect that Terry would
- 23:32expect or you that Georgia has that we
- 23:35didn't show. And then our quarterback
- 23:37has really developed, but not only has
- 23:40he, but we've had so many different
- 23:42combinations of offensive linemen all
- 23:45year. uh guys hurt, guys back, back back
- 23:48and forth. But now it kind of putting it
- 23:50all together plus two weeks of rest and
- 23:53I would say based on that Bama game,
- 23:56George is peing at the right time of
- 23:57year. And as Terry said, we can run the
- 24:00ball when everybody else knows you're
- 24:02going to try to run it. And that really
- 24:04sets up a lot of things for our
- 24:06quarterback. And the one thing that our
- 24:08quarterback's doing now, which Kirby's
- 24:10letting him do when he's not so worried
- 24:12about the rest of the year, we running
- 24:14more quarterback centric runs. He ran
- 24:17the ball 14 times against Alabama the
- 24:19other day. So that gives you first
- 24:21downs, keeps the clock I mean keeps the
- 24:24chains moving and makes the defense be
- 24:26lerary of him. So I like Georgia against
- 24:30even though it's a miss a good team. Uh,
- 24:32you know, we've already beaten them once
- 24:34and it was a close game, but I think
- 24:35we're really trending the right
- 24:37direction.
- 24:38>> I'm I'm I'm I'm all with you. And for
- 24:40those of you listeners, so many of our
- 24:41listeners, they do. There is a 6 and 12
- 24:44point spot on this game, but I've got uh
- 24:46uh Georgia to cover and Georgia to win.
- 24:49And I agree with you, Georgia has just
- 24:50gotten better and better. And I I I I
- 24:53think as you look at the coaches that
- 24:55are in the playoffs, Kirby has the most
- 24:58experience in postseason play, in
- 24:59playoff play. I think he understands,
- 25:02you know, how not to wear your kids out,
- 25:04how to have them ready, and they've
- 25:06gotten better and better and better. Uh,
- 25:09you know, I was an offensive coach,
- 25:10Tommy, my dad, we were all offensive
- 25:12guys, and, uh, and we depended on having
- 25:15a great defensive coordinator. You know,
- 25:16I had Wayne Hall, then I had Brother
- 25:18Oliver uh at Auburn, and uh but I think
- 25:22Kirby Smart has that defensive
- 25:23mentality. Great defense, run the
- 25:26football, uh and then and a solid
- 25:28quarterback that runs your system, you
- 25:30know, like Stson. Uh uh what was the
- 25:32quarterback's name that won two
- 25:34championship? Yeah, he was he was just a
- 25:36great leader, a great manager of the
- 25:38football team. And I think that's
- 25:40>> he could really throw a lot better than
- 25:41people thought. The other thing as an
- 25:43old coach to that I stressed that I know
- 25:46you did as our kicking game is is the
- 25:49best in in the 50 plus years that I've
- 25:52ever been around. We got the best kicker
- 25:54and punter combination that I've ever
- 25:57been at. I've seen better punters and
- 25:59better kickers, but these two guys are
- 26:01deadly. I mean, just really consistent
- 26:04and turn the field around. And you know,
- 26:07if you can have a good kicking game,
- 26:08that can make up for some things when
- 26:10when things aren't going great. And uh
- 26:12and fortunately for us, we've won some
- 26:15tight games. Very fortunate to win the
- 26:17Auburn game. Very fortunate to win
- 26:19Tennessee game there in overtime and
- 26:22some close ball games. But our team
- 26:24knows how to play in the clutch. And I I
- 26:26feel like we got a good shot at winning
- 26:28this one.
- 26:29>> Well, they say I've got my dogs running
- 26:32around behind me. I've got to shut him
- 26:34down. But hey, you know, it's
- 26:35interesting you mentioned that because
- 26:36people wondered why Oklahoma lost to
- 26:38Alabama. Uh Oklahoma has the ACC, I mean
- 26:42the SEC punter, uh allconerence punter.
- 26:46He drops a snap and then their Lou Gro
- 26:49award field goal kicker missed a 36
- 26:51yarder and then a a 50der and he had
- 26:54made I think eight field goals over 50.
- 26:56So again it was a uh u
- 26:58>> I mean I want to ask you too a question.
- 27:00>> Yeah.
- 27:00>> As long as both of you been watching
- 27:02football. Of course I'm a big OU fan.
- 27:04All my kids are out there. They were
- 27:06there when I coached at OU and they
- 27:08everybody's at the game but me. Have you
- 27:10ever seen a guy drop the ball and not
- 27:12hit his foot like that? [laughter]
- 27:15>> I was gonna And he's your And he's your
- 27:17first team allconerence punter. You
- 27:19know, you almost had to shoot yourself
- 27:21as a coach because you got the right
- 27:22people recruited, you know.
- 27:24>> Yeah, that's just that's in that's just
- 27:26one of the worst I've ever seen. Before
- 27:29we before we go, I want to run a couple.
- 27:32Let's let's hit let's hit um Alabama and
- 27:35Indiana and then I also would like to
- 27:36get your thoughts on M Champamp getting
- 27:38back in.
- 27:39Yeah, as far as Alabama, I mean, I I
- 27:42give them a lot of credit because they
- 27:43were lowered in wellmanure there at 17
- 27:46nothing down and they did everything
- 27:47they needed to do to uh turn that game
- 27:51around and they got some help from OU
- 27:52for sure, uh, you know, with the big six
- 27:55and but they, you know, Simpson
- 27:58doesn't have any running game to help
- 28:00him and I think they're going to be uh
- 28:02in trouble against this Indiana front.
- 28:05One of the things that you watch
- 28:06studying them is how much they twist and
- 28:08move around and and that causes a lot of
- 28:11trouble with this Bama. But at the same
- 28:13time, if Bama can hit some runs where
- 28:16they hit those gaps where they're
- 28:17twisting, they might make some easy runs
- 28:20that you normally don't get just because
- 28:23Indiana taking themselves out of it. So,
- 28:26I think it's either going to be Bam's
- 28:27going to get nothing in the running game
- 28:29or they're going to get more than you
- 28:30think. And then, of course, Simpson has
- 28:33been clutch. I mean, he he he's done
- 28:35everything. And Mendoza, we tried hard
- 28:37to get him here. I mean, I was standing
- 28:39on the sideline with him a year ago, and
- 28:42he heard all that stuff about Stockton
- 28:44with the background here, but he he's a
- 28:47very and he's in Auburn saw him last
- 28:49year over there. Very accurate, strong
- 28:52passer, but he really hasn't made a lot
- 28:54of stats against the great teams. Most
- 28:56of it's been, you know, against the
- 28:58others, but he came through in the
- 28:59clutch against Ohio State and Penn
- 29:02State. But I think Bama's got a better
- 29:04shot than most people think. But in the
- 29:07end, Indiana's defensive front's pretty
- 29:09dang good.
- 29:10>> Yeah, that I think that's the difference
- 29:12cuz and I'm I'm with you. I think
- 29:14Alabama their quarterback really is very
- 29:16talented. They put too much pressure. I
- 29:18I their running game is not very good.
- 29:20Y'all held them to minus three. They got
- 29:23about 28 or 30 yards. Uh even when they
- 29:26beat Oklahoma, they couldn't run the
- 29:27football. Maybe 58 yards. It's not the
- 29:30way they won championships. And so you
- 29:32you know how when you can't run the
- 29:34ball, it's not like you have to, but it
- 29:35takes so much pressure off the
- 29:37quarterback. And so I think everything
- 29:39now it's going to determine is how well
- 29:42Tai Simpson can play. We know that. I
- 29:44mean, and then uh Indiana is top 10 in
- 29:47in their rush defense. So they're pretty
- 29:49they're no slouch on defense either uh
- 29:52as well as uh in their quarter. Anytime
- 29:54you got a running game, that helps your
- 29:55quarterback, you know, not have to go
- 29:57out there in passing situations. So, I
- 30:00have said even during the season, if
- 30:02Alabama doesn't get a little more
- 30:04running game, when they get to the good
- 30:05teams in the playoffs, it's going to put
- 30:08too much pressure on the quarterback.
- 30:10Uh, and he's going to have to win it
- 30:11every time. And and Alabama's got some
- 30:13good receivers, but I think that puts a
- 30:15little too much pressure on them. And
- 30:17I'm like, I got Indiana on that one as
- 30:19well.
- 30:20>> Well, what happens with with Alabama?
- 30:22They got to manufacture these runs with
- 30:25with wide receiver jets and throw
- 30:28screens and all that. But as far as Will
- 30:30Muschamp, uh, of course, uh, he he
- 30:33started out here in Georgia and then he
- 30:35worked for you, but just a real football
- 30:37coach and a good man. I I got to know
- 30:40him a lot when he was here the second
- 30:43time around helping Kirby out and he was
- 30:46good to have a guy that second voice and
- 30:48I thought he was just kind of going out
- 30:50on the prairie there, you know, the last
- 30:52two years going with watch his son play
- 30:54up at Vanderbilt and looked like, you
- 30:56know, he was just coming around here and
- 30:58talking once in a while and helping them
- 31:00out. But, um, as you know, Terry, you
- 31:03you you coached for so long and then you
- 31:05were out doing a great job in
- 31:06broadcasting, but that football was in
- 31:08your blood and you got that chance to go
- 31:10back and did a great job at Akran and
- 31:12they didn't give you enough time, I
- 31:14thought, at Monroe. But the point is, if
- 31:16I could coach the team tomorrow, I would
- 31:18do it even if I had to go in a
- 31:19wheelchair. I mean, it's just it's in
- 31:22your blood and I think that's the way it
- 31:23is with Will and certainly Texas has got
- 31:26everything you need for sure. And uh for
- 31:29them to fire that guy who's done a
- 31:31pretty good dang good job I thought for
- 31:33Texas they they got to think they
- 31:35bringing Will in there. And what he
- 31:37brings in to me is he knows the saving
- 31:40footprint. He knows it's kind of like
- 31:43back in the old days warwise some of
- 31:46these tribes will get some of the
- 31:47Indians from the other tribe and try to
- 31:50get them on your side. He knows what
- 31:52Kirby's doing here. He knows the
- 31:54blueprint we got and uh you'll do a
- 31:57great job for him. I mean, he he's a
- 31:59tremendous football coach and he's a
- 32:01great motivator and uh really was close
- 32:04to winning all his second year at
- 32:06Florida as Ronnie knows. I mean, they
- 32:09don't get that uh some of those guys
- 32:11hurt and all. I mean, I thought they
- 32:13were going to win at all. And if Lane
- 32:14Keifin would have won that game against
- 32:16Notre Dame, they would have been playing
- 32:18for the national championship.
- 32:20>> Yeah. Now, did you did you have uh when
- 32:23when uh Will played for was his
- 32:26defensive coordinator Joe uh um who was
- 32:28the coordinator for you at defense when
- 32:30you play when he played? Um
- 32:32>> well, when I got here, uh they had
- 32:34already hired Glenn Mason, so they kept
- 32:36Joe kind so I I kept Joe and he did a
- 32:39good job for us, but Mickey Mickey
- 32:40Matthews was
- 32:42>> Oh, yeah. Mickey and then Gary Gibbs
- 32:44came in after Joe left, but uh Joe went
- 32:47down with your dad. But uh but Will
- 32:50never actually coached here. Kirby
- 32:52coached the first year after he got out
- 32:55and he was kind of part-time guy here.
- 32:57But uh
- 32:58>> but you know, everybody out there, you
- 33:01know, Auburn people don't like Kirby and
- 33:04all that, but uh I'm just telling you
- 33:06>> the guy's a coach's coach. He he I've
- 33:09never been around the guy in the history
- 33:12of my lifetime that knows every position
- 33:15like he does. He could coach every
- 33:17position as an individual coach. You
- 33:19know, his dad was a high school coach.
- 33:21Sure. He knows all the quarterback
- 33:23reads. He knows all the the the stuff on
- 33:26special teams. He knows all the
- 33:28offensive line calls. I mean, he's just
- 33:30a very thorough guy. And he's
- 33:32relentless. I mean, everybody on the in
- 33:34the building's on point all the time.
- 33:36And he's always changing with the times.
- 33:39And that's what you got to do. I mean,
- 33:40yeah, it's a different world out there.
- 33:43>> Yeah. Will Mus Champamp when I brought
- 33:45him in I I would like to say I I had a
- 33:47great influence on him but I did I he
- 33:49came in when I brought Brother Oliver in
- 33:51from Alabama and I want to say brother
- 33:53had about six national championships.
- 33:55Two as a player maybe three at Alabama
- 33:58as a coach and one with uh Clemson when
- 34:00he was there at Clemson. Uh but I think
- 34:03that had the big impact on uh on uh Will
- 34:06then and of course Alabama with with
- 34:08Nick Sabin and that experience he had
- 34:10with him. But, uh, I agree with you with
- 34:12with if I think that Texas, they know if
- 34:15they're down the road, they're going to
- 34:16get to where they want to be. They've
- 34:18got to know as much as they can about
- 34:20Georgia, as much as they can about
- 34:22Alabama, and they've got to have a guy
- 34:25that's intense and knows how to coach
- 34:27defense, and Will fits all. He checks
- 34:29all those boxes. That's That's for sure.
- 34:32Did we get uh Yeah, we got all the
- 34:35playoff games, didn't we?
- 34:37>> We did. We did.
- 34:38>> All right. Let me let me get one more
- 34:39question with you with uh uh before we
- 34:42let you go. Uh we've got so much has
- 34:44changed in the last three years because
- 34:46I think with since you and I started
- 34:48coaching and you were even before me,
- 34:50there's been a lot of changes in
- 34:51football, but I don't think anything in
- 34:53the last three years uh where you've got
- 34:56NIL and you got portal transfer and you
- 35:00wonder where this is going. Bowls don't
- 35:02seem to matter as much as they used to
- 35:04and a lot of teams in playoffs now. And
- 35:09is where is football are you are you
- 35:11still feel good about where college
- 35:13football is going? Does some of this
- 35:14stuff bother you or just it's just
- 35:16different?
- 35:18>> You know, I just get back to when people
- 35:20when I was growing up and they were
- 35:21talking about, hey, when when I used to
- 35:24go to school, we had to walk five miles
- 35:26in the snow and all that. Hey, there's
- 35:28nothing you can do about it. I mean, the
- 35:30changes are the changes and the ability
- 35:33to adapt to it and your administration
- 35:35being the support cast that they need to
- 35:38be and working with you because there
- 35:40there, you know, when you got Congress
- 35:42looking at it and NCA's not and all that
- 35:46stuff, you just got to do roll with the
- 35:48punches and and have the kind of people
- 35:50that can adjust. And that's why I think
- 35:52down the road you're going to probably
- 35:53see 40 big schools, the halves and the
- 35:56have nots because I don't know how these
- 35:58other schools are going to be able to
- 36:00you get a good player in a non big
- 36:02school and then they find out about him
- 36:04and everybody else comes after him the
- 36:06next year. I mean back in the days when
- 36:08you were at Sanford, I was at Marshall,
- 36:10we had good player, they'd be going
- 36:11somewhere else next year because
- 36:13everybody's picking on them. And and I
- 36:16think one thing I'll project here,
- 36:18January is going to be the most wild
- 36:20wild west I've ever seen on this portal
- 36:23because you're going to see
- 36:2525 30 people leaving just so they can
- 36:28play every place else and get more
- 36:31money. And these rosters are going to
- 36:33constantly be evolving every year where
- 36:36you think you got these guys coming
- 36:37back, but they leave and go other
- 36:39places. So every year everybody's going
- 36:42to I mean just like the new coaches in
- 36:44the SEC they're rock they're going to be
- 36:47so different between now and the spring
- 36:50but the one thing I like better than
- 36:51anything is just a one time transfer at
- 36:54least you know you can't do it twice you
- 36:57know have two in one year so you know in
- 37:00the spring what your team's going to
- 37:01look like at least.
- 37:03>> And uh and and again I wonder where
- 37:05where the bowls are going to fit in. It
- 37:07seems I've enjoyed the bowls to be
- 37:09honest with you. There's been like there
- 37:10was some interesting matchups. I don't
- 37:12know if you can predict a winner very
- 37:14good with the roster changing so much or
- 37:16coaching staff changing so much. But
- 37:18when I watched the Georgia Tech and and
- 37:21Baylor and I watched Clemson or Penn
- 37:23State, which was kind of a sloppy game,
- 37:25but I watched some of those games, uh
- 37:27even LSU and Houston, they were fun to
- 37:30watch. So, I don't know where bowls are
- 37:32going with the playoffs, but uh
- 37:34hopefully there'll be a place. Bowls
- 37:36have been so important to college
- 37:37football. I hope there's a place for
- 37:39them beside just the playoffs.
- 37:41>> Yeah. The one thing I always said about
- 37:43bowls and we both went to a lot of them
- 37:45and Ronnie has too is there's a lot of
- 37:47benefit for these kids to play one more
- 37:50time together to know that you know hey
- 37:53we played and we worked oursel but also
- 37:56the going into these communities and and
- 37:59this is not being hokey but being around
- 38:01the boys and girls clubs or going these
- 38:03hospitals or whatever it might be gives
- 38:06the kids a chance to really see what
- 38:08life's all about outside their own
- 38:10school and all and meet people like you
- 38:13know I met some people at bowl games
- 38:15before that helped me down my further
- 38:18down the career and I'm sure both you
- 38:19have but the interaction with other
- 38:21people and and your team and all I mean
- 38:24people that gripe about bowls they
- 38:26really don't understand it it it's
- 38:28certainly a reward for your seniors but
- 38:30it's also very uh educational for your
- 38:33team to get out there and the thing that
- 38:35really chaps my ass though is these
- 38:37people that opt out you know I mean you
- 38:40got you gonna quit on your team and uh I
- 38:43I think you're either going to be on the
- 38:45team or you're not. So finish it, finish
- 38:47it out and play with your team and and
- 38:49we learned a valuable lesson. The first
- 38:52year when the opt outs, we played Texas
- 38:54and we had some guys opt out and we let
- 38:57them go to the game and all they took
- 38:58away. But the next time we played, Kirby
- 39:01said, "You're either in or you're out.
- 39:03You know, you're either going to be with
- 39:04our team." And the same thing's true
- 39:06when we played Florida State when we
- 39:08didn't get to play in the championship
- 39:10game. We told those guys, look, you're
- 39:12either going to play in a game or you're
- 39:14not. and our guys, we can sit around and
- 39:17mope about it. And and I will give a
- 39:20little credit to that coach at
- 39:21Vanderbilt. He wasn't griping about the
- 39:24fact that they didn't make it. He said,
- 39:25"Look, we had a chance to do it and we
- 39:27didn't do it." And I admire the fact
- 39:29that he said that.
- 39:31>> Yeah. And I think it and you never know
- 39:33how it's going to affect the team. I
- 39:34watched Pit play East Carolina and
- 39:37everybody would have thought I mean East
- 39:38Carolina lost their coordinators, they
- 39:40lost their quarterback, but when I saw
- 39:42the first series and Pit got sacked
- 39:44twice, then five turnovers and two
- 39:47fourth and shorts, they don't get it. I
- 39:49said one team wasn't ready to play, I
- 39:51know that much and the other one
- 39:52>> looked like looked like Pit didn't
- 39:54practice for sure. [laughter]
- 39:57>> That's one of those things. Well,
- 39:58listen, Jim, so good to talk to you and
- 40:00so thankful that you could be on the
- 40:02show with us and uh we just uh look
- 40:04forward to it. Maybe we can do it again.
- 40:06>> Yeah, look forward to it in the future
- 40:08and just want to say to all the Auburn
- 40:10fans and and to how fortunate they are
- 40:13to have had you as the coach and also to
- 40:15have this podcast for you to talk ball
- 40:17and and get around. I do a little bit
- 40:19that with George and of course Ronnie
- 40:21over the years has just been a really
- 40:23true friend and really backed me and was
- 40:26very very good when my wife was in very
- 40:29sick. So, uh, fortunate to have you as a
- 40:31friend, Ronnie.
- 40:32>> I I feel the same way, coach. It's been
- 40:35I I can't believe we've known each other
- 40:36this long, but I guess time flies when
- 40:38you're having fun.
- 40:39>> Yeah, you got those kids now. You going
- 40:41to have to get behind your house and
- 40:43[laughter]
- 40:44dig up some of those cans you've been
- 40:46putting all that money in and start
- 40:47paying for them to go to college.
- 40:49>> I think my wife's already spent it all.
- 40:51[laughter]
- 40:53>> All right. Thanks for having me.
- 40:54>> Take care. Successful coach. I know our
- 40:57our our both of our careers go back.
- 40:59He's about 10 years older than I am, I
- 41:02think. Uh I'm 69, he's 79 or so. Uh but
- 41:06he uh national coach of the year uh
- 41:09national champion at at Marshall SEC n
- 41:12uh coach of the year 1997
- 41:15uh college football hall of fame. I want
- 41:18to say he's 10 and something and 40.
- 41:20He's got a good his overall record very
- 41:22good and uh and he's been a part of a
- 41:24lot of power for schools he's coached at
- 41:28over the years uh in his in his
- 41:30coaching. And of course our our p we had
- 41:33a couple of really uh incredible
- 41:35football games to watch. We got it was a
- 41:38very tough loss for me in 1996 to him at
- 41:42Georgia. Uh when Damian and Hines Ward
- 41:45at quarterback and uh Robert Edwards at
- 41:47running back and a lot of other people.
- 41:49We had we had Damen Craig at quarterback
- 41:51and Tequila Spikes at linebacker. But
- 41:54those were those were we knocked them
- 41:56out of the SEC championship and then the
- 41:58next year. I know they knocked us out of
- 42:00the champ out of a chance and that the
- 42:02next year we beat them and knocked them
- 42:04out of a chance to play for the
- 42:06championship, but uh everybody thinks of
- 42:08the Auburn Alabama game and that is the
- 42:10toughest that is the one, but a close
- 42:13second is uh Auburn Georgia in our game
- 42:15with Georgia.
- 42:16>> There there's no doubt and talking we
- 42:18mentioned [clears throat] one Georgia,
- 42:20excuse me, one former Georgia player, we
- 42:22we talked about him a little bit ago.
- 42:23There's and I sent my champ a text last
- 42:25week. I said, you know, you need to be
- 42:27coaching. And [laughter]
- 42:29there's one guy, if there's one guy I
- 42:31know that does not need to be doing TV
- 42:33[clears throat] or anything else, it's
- 42:35needs to be coaching the rest of his
- 42:36life, it's Will Mchamp. [laughter]
- 42:39Well, you know, and and and uh uh of
- 42:41course I've gotten to know because his
- 42:43uh my my my wife's son is uh was kind of
- 42:47mentored under Will at LSU and then
- 42:50followed him to South Carolina and
- 42:52followed him to Georgia and now uh I
- 42:55think uh uh Will Myers was just selected
- 42:58as one of the is like assistant coach of
- 43:01the year or sap of the year. He won one
- 43:03of those whatever one of those awards
- 43:04they give to the outstanding assistant
- 43:06or administrative assistant of the year.
- 43:08He's the player personnel director for
- 43:10the job he does at Georgia. But uh I
- 43:13think Don Jim Don probably said it
- 43:15right. You better be ready to work if
- 43:17you're going to go work for Kirby Smart.
- 43:19Uh you better be willing to go work
- 43:20because you're up pretty early and
- 43:22you're there pretty late. Uh and you dot
- 43:24every eye and you cross every tea. And
- 43:27that's kind of what I think successful
- 43:29coaches understand is that uh and I've
- 43:32been with Davo and I've watched him.
- 43:34I've watched Nick Sabin as a graduate
- 43:36assistant. Of course, my father for
- 43:38years uh and so many coaches and the the
- 43:41techniques and the and the and the
- 43:43ability and the most important thing I
- 43:45think that you see from the coaches that
- 43:47are very successful is that they're
- 43:49they're there earlier and they're there
- 43:51late. They work hard and they understand
- 43:54when you we don't all have the right
- 43:56answer, but hard work will usually get
- 43:58you through until you figure out the
- 44:00right answer. You know, we don't have
- 44:01the we don't always have the perfect
- 44:03offense, the perfect defense, but we're
- 44:04going to outwork people. So, it'll get
- 44:06us through until we figure that part
- 44:08out. You know,
- 44:09>> people don't realize how, you know, that
- 44:10the hours that coaches put in like,
- 44:12well, I want to do that for a living
- 44:13because the, you know, you get the fame
- 44:15and the and the money and all those
- 44:17things and and then you get in there and
- 44:18it's like, wait a minute now. I mean, I
- 44:20remember working at LSU and we had a
- 44:21staff meeting at 7 and nobody left the
- 44:24building until you could the building we
- 44:27were in then. You could look out the the
- 44:28the window and coach saving park right
- 44:31there and you could see his tail lights
- 44:32come on when he when he backed up.
- 44:34>> And so as soon as he would leave, he'd
- 44:35walk by the offensive staff room and
- 44:37he'd get to the bottom of the stairs and
- 44:38as soon as his brake lights would come
- 44:40on, Derek Duly came down the hall
- 44:42screaming jailbreak. So we all knew it
- 44:44was time we could go home. [laughter]
- 44:46>> Yeah. You don't want you don't want to
- 44:48to to get uh have the head coach there
- 44:51longer than you are. That's for sure. If
- 44:53if you're an assistant, but uh that you
- 44:55know, it's a labor of love. Yes. And uh
- 44:58um now I will say this, coaches, most
- 45:01coaches, they couldn't make nearly what
- 45:03they make in any other profession than
- 45:06what they're now being paid. But you do
- 45:08put in your hours. How many times have I
- 45:09heard people say, "Well, what do you do
- 45:11in the off season?" And I didn't want to
- 45:13say, "Well, what offseason?" There is no
- 45:14offseason. you know there I mean I think
- 45:17I think Rick Trickett once said that at
- 45:19Nick Sabin with Nick one year or maybe
- 45:22Pete Jenkins said it I think we worked
- 45:2451 out of 52 weekends uh in a particular
- 45:28year and uh
- 45:30>> I remember Jimbo calling me it was the
- 45:31year after and I had already left it was
- 45:33the year after they won the national
- 45:34championship at LSU and
- 45:36>> he said you know I think he told I think
- 45:38he I think you're right I mean he he
- 45:39said something about he's outside of
- 45:41outside of the uh the three weeks we had
- 45:44the summer
- 45:44>> he said I I think he said they worked
- 45:46every weekend except one. And he said,
- 45:49he said, you know, Nick's in here
- 45:50cussing us out. He said, you know, we
- 45:52did win a national championship last
- 45:54year and [laughter]
- 45:57set the bar a little high. You set the
- 45:59bar a little bit high. [laughter]
- 46:01Well, that's the thing about Georgia. I
- 46:03mean, Jim was talking. It's so good to
- 46:04see Jim involved at Georgia because he
- 46:06was a he was very successful. And you
- 46:09know they when they let him go, he had
- 46:10won nine or eight or or nine games ever.
- 46:12He never let won less than eight or
- 46:14nine.
- 46:15>> Mark
- 46:16>> and uh and that's what that's what
- 46:18happens when you're there. You know, you
- 46:19get you uh um you you you create a level
- 46:22of of expectation that's so high that uh
- 46:26that's what's amazing that at Auburn
- 46:28that they have been a they've suffered
- 46:30through five losing seasons. I it's just
- 46:32hard for me to picture that. But uh
- 46:35especially and I will say this as a
- 46:37compliment to all of our Auburn fans is
- 46:40what an amazing game atmosphere that is.
- 46:43I said wait till it's 10 and 8 and0 or
- 46:4510 and0 when you're playing 11 and0 when
- 46:47you're playing Alabama. Wait till it's
- 46:49because y'all have been there through
- 46:51the thick and thin. Uh and
- 46:54>> I keep telling my kids, you know,
- 46:55Auburn's not going to be terrible
- 46:57forever. We moved back to Birmingham
- 46:58five years ago.
- 46:59>> Yeah. Auburn's had five straight losing
- 47:01seasons and my my little one, you know,
- 47:03she's she's we've been to what three
- 47:05Iron Bowls in in Jordan Air now and
- 47:07they've all three one was four
- 47:08overtimes.
- 47:09>> Yeah.
- 47:09>> One was fourth and 31 and the other one
- 47:11was last year. So it's uh or it's been a
- 47:14uh she said she she thinks I'm never
- 47:17gonna I'm never going to see him
- 47:18[laughter] see I'm like honey it's it's
- 47:21coming. Just give it just give it some
- 47:22time.
- 47:22>> Yeah. and and everything I see about our
- 47:25new coach uh uh Alice Gullish uh and the
- 47:29staff that he's brought in and retained,
- 47:33>> everything I see just he seems like he's
- 47:35making because I'm always watching uh
- 47:38how they staff, decisions they make,
- 47:41press conferences they have because
- 47:43there's one thing about being the head
- 47:45coach at Auburn or anywhere like Auburn,
- 47:48there's there's there's very little time
- 47:50to learn on the job. If you don't make a
- 47:53great decision with your staff, and I
- 47:55have made a couple of decisions where I
- 47:57had to make a change. I I have I very
- 47:59seldom ever had to make a change, but I
- 48:01have made some. But but if you know what
- 48:03you're doing, and when they hire you at
- 48:05Auburn, they do hire you expecting you
- 48:08to know exactly what you're doing. When
- 48:10I see a coach hire eight guys or nine
- 48:13guys and he fires three after one year,
- 48:16>> I'm thinking, what what were you
- 48:17thinking? what were what you those
- 48:19aren't somebody else's problem unless
- 48:21they talked you into keeping somebody
- 48:24you know and and sometimes there's
- 48:25probably some dynamic like that that
- 48:27there's a there's that kind of
- 48:29transition but uh there's no there's you
- 48:32need to know what you're doing day one
- 48:34and I like the staff that he's put
- 48:36together I like the the thinking that
- 48:37he's got uh I like the the the comments
- 48:40that he's made in his press conference
- 48:43uh he's obviously a guy that comes from
- 48:45a a a background of work ethic and and
- 48:49and building your own career, building
- 48:51your own life. It comes out of Russia.
- 48:53His family continually trying to build a
- 48:55better life. And I think that's
- 48:57something he thought of. He wasn't blue
- 48:59blood, he wasn't blue blood. He I mean
- 49:01to played at he went to Toledo or
- 49:03wherever he was with uh when he went
- 49:06after college. I forget where he said he
- 49:08went to college and played ball. He
- 49:09>> went to Ohio State. I'm not sure after
- 49:11that, but
- 49:12>> No, but he started out in I don't know
- 49:14where he went to play. He didn't play
- 49:15football at Ohio State. I didn't think
- 49:17he played at Ohio State, but he might
- 49:18have, but Ohio State,
- 49:20>> but he got a grad. But anyway, the fact
- 49:21is he he worked his way up through the
- 49:23ranks, you know, and uh I think I saw
- 49:26the article today, they were talking
- 49:27about his uh his uh offensive
- 49:30coordinator, maybe I think uh uh and how
- 49:33he's at USF one minute, the next minute
- 49:35he's at Auburn. But what's the
- 49:37quarterback coach's name? The offensive
- 49:39coordinator. I forget the name of that.
- 49:41And I don't know all their names yet. U
- 49:43>> he's a he's a young guy.
- 49:45>> Yeah. [clears throat]
- 49:46He's
- 49:47>> I like the fact that he was a he was a
- 49:48quarterback at Shephard. I don't know if
- 49:50anybody knows what Shepherd they in fact
- 49:52I saw on the Auburn Network the article
- 49:55called it Shephardd'stown College. It's
- 49:57Shephard College in Shephardd'stown,
- 49:59West Virginia. I know that because when
- 50:01I started coaching at Salem College,
- 50:04that was our big ri that was the best
- 50:05team in the conference. And you had to
- 50:07beat Shepard if you were going to go
- 50:09anywhere. And that your quarterback
- 50:11coach went to Sheepard, was all
- 50:13conference at Shepard. uh and is on
- 50:16there. Huh?
- 50:17>> Division. Division three. Joel.
- 50:19>> Well, yeah. And back then we were NIA.
- 50:22We were scholarship, but we were NIA. I
- 50:24thought they were division two now, but
- 50:25they could be division three now, like
- 50:27you said, because uh I know he coached,
- 50:29he said he coached at Emory and Henry. I
- 50:31coached against a lot of those schools
- 50:32because I started out at Salem College,
- 50:34which was in the same conference as
- 50:37Shepard. And uh uh you still learn a lot
- 50:40of football when you're played at that
- 50:41level, too. And so it looks like he's
- 50:43got most of his staff lined up. And uh
- 50:46>> you also learn a lot at that, you know,
- 50:48people don't realize. I mean, you learn
- 50:50a lot when you're at those places. I
- 50:52remember when I walked in at Southern
- 50:53Miss and they said, "You, you know,
- 50:54you're going to be the recruiting
- 50:54coordinator and you're going to run
- 50:55camps." And I said, "Okay, well, you
- 50:57know, what have you done in the past?"
- 50:59And I started looking around. I'm like,
- 51:02like, so basically this is on me, right?
- 51:04[laughter]
- 51:05And
- 51:06>> well, you do. I mean, you do. That's a
- 51:08great point. You do. I mean I mean Jim
- 51:10Donovan was talking about I think he was
- 51:11talking about Will Muschamp when he say
- 51:13he knows every position he knows every
- 51:15assignment and I can't remember if he
- 51:16was talking about Kirby or talking about
- 51:18uh Jim but the fact is back then I mean
- 51:22when I was a head coach at Salem College
- 51:24I had to know I knew every assignment of
- 51:27every position on the offense every step
- 51:30they took every technique they had of
- 51:32every position because I could only
- 51:34afford student assistants and maybe a
- 51:37graduate assistant uh and no real money
- 51:39to give anybody. And so I had to make
- 51:42sure I knew every assignment of every
- 51:44position. Uh and that's kind of when I
- 51:47got to Auburn, I had been running that
- 51:48offense for 10 years knowing every
- 51:51position. So when I got into an argument
- 51:53with Rick Trickett or Jimbo or Tommy, at
- 51:56least I said, "No, this is the way we're
- 51:57going to run it." Or and and I would
- 51:59always come back the next day and say,
- 52:02"Okay, you're right. You can run it,
- 52:03Tommy. Tommy, I'd get in an argument
- 52:05with when we'd have a staff meeting in
- 52:06meeting on offense and and I'd get in an
- 52:08argument with Tommy and Tom, well,
- 52:10you're going to do what you're going to
- 52:10do. I don't know why we're arguing.
- 52:12You're going to run what you want to
- 52:13run, so forget it. I said, "Yeah, that's
- 52:15right." And the next day, I'd come and I
- 52:17said, "Let's change it to what Tommy
- 52:19wanted to do or Jipo wanted to do."
- 52:22>> I was talking to Tommy after after
- 52:24Auburn recognized the 93 team as
- 52:26national champion. And he said, "Well,
- 52:29I'm officially the worst the worst coach
- 52:30in my family." And I said, "Well, you
- 52:32got you got Jack and Jeff." He said,
- 52:33"Well, thanks for that vote of
- 52:34confidence." [laughter]
- 52:38Well, it's it's funny. Tommy had always
- 52:40said, "Make that." It's [laughter]
- 52:44Tommy and I would take turns saying
- 52:45second best in our family. None of us
- 52:47ever even pretended to be first best in
- 52:50our family. It was either second or
- 52:52third. And [laughter]
- 52:54I remember after the 93 season, uh, and
- 52:57I can't ever forget it. Uh, of course,
- 52:59we we had the National Coach of the Year
- 53:01banquet. Uh, and it was the Bear Bryant
- 53:04National Coach of the Year banquet in
- 53:05Houston. And I was there. Uh, I was
- 53:08nominated. My dad was nominated. Bill
- 53:10Snyder was nominated and one other I
- 53:13can't remember who the other one was.
- 53:15And, uh, and so, uh, I got up and
- 53:17talked. You know, we they didn't
- 53:19announce it till after everybody spoke.
- 53:20So, I was the youngest. I probably spoke
- 53:22first. And I can't and I said, "I can't
- 53:25believe I'm up here at this on this this
- 53:27uh table at the front front table with
- 53:30all these great coaches. It's amazing
- 53:32how many great coaches there are here.
- 53:34And my dad being the oldest, he was the
- 53:36last guy to give his little speech
- 53:38before they announced the winner. And he
- 53:40said, "Well, the first thing I want to
- 53:41say is, Terry, there's one less great
- 53:43coach up here than you think."
- 53:45[laughter]
- 53:46And I said, "Well, thanks for ripping me
- 53:48with that one, you know." But uh but
- 53:51that's kind of the fun that we had. But
- 53:53interesting. I enjoy I really do enjoy
- 53:56talking to Jim Don and some of the uh
- 53:58because he's been through so much uh of
- 54:01the football and success and and it it's
- 54:04obvious he still covers the game and I
- 54:07uh um and and it's it's really funny uh
- 54:12that I would I was because I' I've
- 54:14gotten to the point now I think you and
- 54:15I have talked about it where you don't
- 54:17you don't just pick who's going to win
- 54:18anymore, you got to pick how much. And
- 54:22that's not easy to pick, you know.
- 54:25>> I've decided that 60% if I could just
- 54:27get 60% of my games right against the
- 54:29line, against the spread, I'm way above
- 54:32average, you know, when I do that. And
- 54:34so that's kind of where I am now.
- 54:37>> And circling back to something you said
- 54:39earlier, you know, it talked about, you
- 54:42know, you it's hard to learn how to be a
- 54:44head coach. You know what you want know
- 54:46what you want to do. And that's one
- 54:47thing, you know, when a when an
- 54:49assistant coach gets hired, uh, and and
- 54:51it's been, you know, guys have been
- 54:52successful. Look at Kirby. He was an
- 54:54assistant coach.
- 54:55>> Um, but, you know, it also takes a
- 54:57little bit. I remember when we were at
- 54:58Florida and, you know, overall, uh, you
- 55:01know, if you, if you look at our winning
- 55:03percentage, we ended up we ended up
- 55:04pretty well. Um, you know, we just we
- 55:06just followed the wrong guy. We just we
- 55:08just followed Spur.
- 55:09>> Um, but, you know, Ron was learning how
- 55:12to be a head coach. And so it's
- 55:14different when you make those mistakes
- 55:15at Salem versus making them at Florida.
- 55:17>> Absolutely.
- 55:20I've always said that uh the great thing
- 55:22about coaching at Salem and in Sanford
- 55:24before I coached at Auburn was I made a
- 55:27I made mistakes when nobody was
- 55:28watching. You know, it's not like they
- 55:30may not fire you. It's just that you're
- 55:32not on the they don't critique it in the
- 55:34newspaper or on you know we didn't have
- 55:36social media when during the se the 80s
- 55:38and uh there was no internet till maybe
- 55:41late 80s or at least no social media you
- 55:45know till the 90s you know and uh so it
- 55:48wasn't something where you got critiqued
- 55:50like you are now every mistake you make
- 55:52everything you do it's just like if you
- 55:54did you watch the Missouri game uh when
- 55:57Missouri lost to Virginia I don't know
- 55:59if you got a chance to watch that
- 56:01>> I Uh but Ahmad Ham lot Ahmad Hardy is
- 56:05the uh leading rusher in the SEC at 1560
- 56:08yard. He's now at 1,600 yards. He's the
- 56:10all-time rushing leader in Missouri. Was
- 56:13the number one running running back in
- 56:15the conference as far as yards are
- 56:17concerned.
- 56:18They had a fourth and two to win the
- 56:20game with about 25 seconds left. And the
- 56:23quarterback and and the head coach
- 56:25didn't have him in. He was out. He want
- 56:26him in. He's and he's on the sideline.
- 56:28He's pacing. He's bad. and he's arguing.
- 56:31He's not he's not arguing with him. He's
- 56:32having a discussion with the head coach.
- 56:33Well, the they run a a power with the
- 56:36quarterback and the quarterback gets
- 56:38about a yard and a half but doesn't know
- 56:40to switch his arm to the inside ar ball
- 56:42and reach it across. He just kind of ran
- 56:45out of bounds and he's a freshman, you
- 56:47know, and didn't get it. And everybody's
- 56:49wondering, well, why did you give the
- 56:50ball to the best running back in the
- 56:52conference? Uh uh and so but everybody's
- 56:56second guessing because everybody's
- 56:57watching the games and everybody is
- 56:59second guessing. Now their quarterback
- 57:00has been ultra successful and I'm sure
- 57:02he had a reason but he I I didn't
- 57:05understand why he didn't give that guy
- 57:07the ball a bunch more in that game.
- 57:09>> He didn't he didn't have trick uh in in
- 57:11on the side
- 57:12>> yelling at [laughter]
- 57:14run the damn now he ran. Now, I will say
- 57:16this, the freshman quarterback that did
- 57:18run it is a freshman, a true freshman
- 57:21who replaced their starter who tore his
- 57:24ankle or tore his knee up and and then
- 57:25he opted out. And so Zer has I think
- 57:28it's uh Matt Zler. He's a true fresh but
- 57:31but he started about seven games now. Uh
- 57:33but he can't couldn't hit the side of a
- 57:35barn. I mean, they they they I felt like
- 57:38they would run well enough and win the
- 57:40game that they but they you have to
- 57:41throw it some and he could not hit the
- 57:44side of a barn and I think they ended up
- 57:46with 100 yards of passing, but he got
- 57:48half of that on the very last drive. And
- 57:51uh and you can't run it every down, you
- 57:53know, you can't run it every down. Uh
- 57:55and they were forced to run it almost
- 57:57every down. And uh Virginia did just
- 58:00enough. You know, they mixed the
- 58:01running. Virginia was like 60% on third
- 58:04downs and Virginia would run run and
- 58:07dink a pass and they'd go for it on
- 58:09fourth down and make it and they were
- 58:10they just kept the ball the whole time.
- 58:12You know,
- 58:12>> it's funny, you know, deser for those
- 58:14who don't, you know, the head coach at
- 58:16uh at Virginia deserves a ton of credit,
- 58:18you know. I mean, they they kind of peed
- 58:19down their leg against Duke, but uh you
- 58:22know, he he's to win 11 games at
- 58:23Virginia. Um he
- 58:25>> first time ever first time ever at
- 58:27Virginia to have 11 games, 122 years of
- 58:30football. first time ever for the team
- 58:32to win 11 and won I want to say it was
- 58:36three overtime games and it might have
- 58:38been four counting the uh no no he won
- 58:40that game without going to overtime. So
- 58:41he won three of his losses. He won three
- 58:43games in overtime, you know, and then
- 58:46lost the conference championship and I
- 58:47want to say lost to NC State or Wake
- 58:49Forest, somebody that, you know, during
- 58:51the season. Uh he lost a game. But uh
- 58:54anyway, that was a a great win for for
- 58:57Virginia. A great season. I I I I'm
- 58:59pretty sure he was the coach of the year
- 59:00in the conference. I I don't think
- 59:02probably he gets enough credit to be
- 59:05coach of the year, but Huh. I'm pretty
- 59:07sure
- 59:07>> he had to be he had to be. he had to
- 59:10have gotten that award, you know, uh for
- 59:12the incredible job that he did. He's
- 59:14been I was with uh uh at Clemson for two
- 59:17years, 19 uh 2019 2020, I was there as
- 59:21an analyst and and did a lot of work
- 59:23with Tony on offense and then I did
- 59:25crossover work for Venibles on defense
- 59:27and uh he's just a class guy and uh you
- 59:32know, people wonder what's happening at
- 59:33at at Clemson that's a little bit off.
- 59:36Well, I think obviously everybody is
- 59:38saying is Davo paying enough attention
- 59:40to the portal if he's is he doing enough
- 59:42in the new trend of recruiting? And I'm
- 59:45sure that's an issue that even Davos
- 59:48says that he uh is changing his thinking
- 59:51on that. But he also lost Tony Elliot as
- 59:54the offensive coordinator and Brent
- 59:56Bibles as the defensive coordinator and
- 59:58they were two of the best. That's right.
- 1:00:00And when you lose those two coaches,
- 1:00:02plus you lose the thing changes from
- 1:00:05from recruiting high school kids and and
- 1:00:08a culture and and and developing them
- 1:00:11and and the play calling because Tony
- 1:00:13brought great running attack to the
- 1:00:14offense, you know. Uh and then they they
- 1:00:18were able to get the best high school
- 1:00:19quarterbacks in the country and develop
- 1:00:21them, you know, and and uh now people
- 1:00:23are if they don't get them, they they
- 1:00:24they buy them, you know, and and that's
- 1:00:27what and I think that's what he's got to
- 1:00:29do at at Clemson. So anyway, that's an
- 1:00:32interesting part there. But anyway,
- 1:00:33>> and talking about talking about the
- 1:00:34portal before we go
- 1:00:36>> is uh you know, Rick Tricket was in the
- 1:00:38portal.
- 1:00:39>> Yes. and landed at landed at West
- 1:00:41Virginia and last I heard I believe now
- 1:00:43how'd you like to be on the staff with
- 1:00:44Rich Rodriguez and three trinkets
- 1:00:47>> that that [laughter]
- 1:00:50well I've been on the I've been on the
- 1:00:53staff with two of them but not at the
- 1:00:55same time with Rick and Rich Rodriguez
- 1:00:58and uh you can't it'd be hard to take
- 1:00:59two of them at the same time much less
- 1:01:01three. I think uh Travis is up there. Uh
- 1:01:05is the senior offic and and Rick
- 1:01:08>> Rick just went there
- 1:01:10>> sounds like that's a done deal. He he
- 1:01:12does a great job and Travis does a great
- 1:01:14job and and and Rodriguez does a great
- 1:01:16job but they are they are it's hard to
- 1:01:19have you know I used to say I need a
- 1:01:21quiet guy a good cop bad cop you need a
- 1:01:23quiet coach and a screamer when you got
- 1:01:25some screamer you got some guys that get
- 1:01:27on them. Uh,
- 1:01:28>> but I think he's hiring Chance. I think
- 1:01:30he's hiring. You know, Chance Trickett
- 1:01:31was was a scout with the uh with the
- 1:01:34Rams and I believe he's going to West
- 1:01:36Virginia. I may be breaking some news.
- 1:01:38I'm not supposed to, but I think he's
- 1:01:39going as the uh as a director of
- 1:01:41scouting or something like that at West
- 1:01:42Virginia. So, you'll have
- 1:01:43>> all the all tricks. Well, you know what?
- 1:01:45That's probably how he got, you know,
- 1:01:46when I got Rich Rodriguez to come play
- 1:01:49coach for me, it was part of it was a
- 1:01:52package deal. I got his his son was a
- 1:01:54quarterback at Arizona. So I brought his
- 1:01:56I gave his son a scholarship to lead our
- 1:01:58team. So it was a package deal and I
- 1:02:00would think he tried to get Tricket when
- 1:02:02he went up there and I think Trickett
- 1:02:04wanted to stay and coach with his son.
- 1:02:06Uh or I think that's what he at Jackson
- 1:02:08State Jacksonville
- 1:02:10>> well Travis uh Travis was at was at West
- 1:02:12Virginia and Clint was at uh
- 1:02:14Jacksonville State. But Tick always told
- 1:02:16me he said and I I'll leave out the
- 1:02:18exits but he said that uh he said I'm
- 1:02:20not coaching anybody that that makes
- 1:02:22more money than I do. And I was
- 1:02:24[laughter] texting with him last night
- 1:02:25and he said I said I guess you changed
- 1:02:26your mind. He said I'm making more money
- 1:02:28than I've ever made. [laughter]
- 1:02:31>> It's a time it's a tough time to give up
- 1:02:33the the coaching profession. Uh and I
- 1:02:36don't know if that had anything to do
- 1:02:37with it with with Will Busamp going back
- 1:02:39in too, but they're making more money
- 1:02:40than they've made. You know, I've been
- 1:02:42blessed because I had such a great uh uh
- 1:02:45run early in life. Then I had a great
- 1:02:47tenure run with ABC New York. And uh I
- 1:02:50spent 15 years coaching exactly where I
- 1:02:52wanted to coach uh because I love
- 1:02:54coaching, you know, uh at schools that
- 1:02:56weren't paying top dollar. Uh uh but you
- 1:02:59don't you don't always repeat what you
- 1:03:01went through beforehand. But anyway, uh
- 1:03:03great show today. Great time to be with
- 1:03:06uh Jim Donan. Uh we kind of sometimes
- 1:03:09this time of year we'll try to be on
- 1:03:11next Monday, but we may we may be uh
- 1:03:14today. Well, today's not what? Yeah,
- 1:03:15today is Monday. I get I get so
- 1:03:17confused. I think of Christmas as being
- 1:03:19Sunday. Every time I have a Christmas, I
- 1:03:21think that must be Sunday, but it's not.
- 1:03:22It was Thursday or whatever. But anyway,
- 1:03:25we'll be on next week. But we do want to
- 1:03:27give our our our our shout out and our
- 1:03:30thanks to to Tom Haley and the Haley
