- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back, everyone, to another episode of Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Anthony Ross with my partner.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm Anthony Ross. You said I'm Anthony Ross.
- 0:11Speaker 3: I am Anthony Rizzo. Son, son, I love you, son.
- 0:15Speaker 1: With my partner, David Ross.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Happy Monday.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We are four days away from World Series baseball, Rossi.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And the Tampa Bay Rays are one win away from punching...
- 0:29Speaker 1: their American league pennant ticket to the world series.
- 0:32Speaker 2: This is the kind of game we were expecting to
- 0:34Speaker 2: see like great pitching, uh, from the Rays. I mean,
- 0:38Speaker 2: what Drew Brasmussen did was absolutely epic. Seven innings, stud,
- 0:43Speaker 2: four hits, one iron run, six punches, just in control,
- 0:46Speaker 2: getting a ground ball, double play as soon as he
- 0:49Speaker 2: needed it. Uh, great defense behind him. I thought both
- 0:51Speaker 2: D both teams played great D, uh, Parker Messick didn't
- 0:55Speaker 2: have his best stuff. Uh, A lot of pitches. The
- 0:58Speaker 2: command wasn't there. The Rays jumped on him. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: scoring early, falling behind when you're, you know, tied like
- 1:05Speaker 2: that and you've got a guy like Drew Rasmussen on
- 1:07Speaker 2: the mound. It's tough to come back from. You just
- 1:09Speaker 2: continue to make pitches. The top of the lineup, again, producing.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Chandler Simpson had a great game. I mean, Hozier-Mir has
- 1:17Speaker 2: made a great play on that bun or else he
- 1:18Speaker 2: would have had three knocks. Putting pressure on the D. Aranda,
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yandy Diaz, you know, The three.
- 1:26Speaker 3: They needed to wake up woke up. Yeah. Right? In
- 1:28Speaker 3: their lineup.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Their three horses woke up. And they've turned the series around.
- 1:32Speaker 1: They're one win away from going to the World Series.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And they just put pressure on them. You said Parker
- 1:37Speaker 1: Messick didn't have his best stuff. I'm seeing the Rays
- 1:41Speaker 1: just showing why they were the best team in the
- 1:42Speaker 1: American League. They're seeing the guy. They're seeing him for
- 1:46Speaker 1: the second time around. They're making the adjustments. And you saw...
- 1:50Speaker 1: how good that team was as far as making adjustments
- 1:52Speaker 1: and getting him into, what, 60 pitches in two innings
- 1:55Speaker 1: and getting him out of the game?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 1: This has completely shifted into the Tampa Bay Rays series.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Well, and when you have to go, you have two
- 2:02Speaker 2: back-to-back outings where the starters don't go deep in the game.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It just puts a tax on your bullpen. So with
- 2:09Speaker 2: that rain out and now all the games back-to-back, I
- 2:13Speaker 2: agree with you. The Rays are sitting in a really
- 2:15Speaker 2: good spot. Bro, Drew Rasmussen... hasn't lost a game since
- 2:19Speaker 2: July 9th. Like, think about that. That's an absolutely deal.
- 2:24Speaker 2: That's a long time ago. I don't mean we, that
- 2:26Speaker 2: was before we went to Ireland, bro. That was like
- 2:28Speaker 2: a long, that was a long time ago. This guy
- 2:31Speaker 2: has been dealing. And you know, when you hear, when
- 2:35Speaker 2: you hear Kevin cash talk about him in the post
- 2:39Speaker 2: game pressers and everybody wants him to make all these,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, big statements, he just like, this is who
- 2:45Speaker 2: he is, you know? And, He's got to be one
- 2:47Speaker 2: of the starters in Major League Baseball that flies under
- 2:50Speaker 2: the radar. He's a true ace, obviously, the way he's
- 2:52Speaker 2: been pitching in these moments. And for him to be
- 2:56Speaker 2: under the radar like he is, you know, just speaks
- 3:01Speaker 2: volumes to just him going out and continue to dominate.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and I love that he went back out for
- 3:06Speaker 1: the seventh, honestly. And Kevin Cash allowing him to finish
- 3:10Speaker 1: that inning because– You know, obviously years before, whatever you
- 3:14Speaker 1: want to say about 2020 and that World Series taken out.
- 3:17Speaker 3: What was it? Blake Snell. Blake Snell, yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 1: This is like, this reminds me of, honestly, and I
- 3:25Speaker 1: hate talking about this World Series in 2024, when Dave
- 3:28Speaker 1: Roberts was riding his guys. You know, usually their style
- 3:32Speaker 1: is take them out early, get to the bullpen. They're
- 3:34Speaker 1: riding their horses now.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And that, for me, being in a clubhouse for as
- 3:41Speaker 1: long as we were, Rossi.
- 3:42Speaker 3: You know when you ride your guys on the.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Inside, you're like, fuck yeah, let's go, right? Because you
- 3:49Speaker 1: root for good guys to do good things. You root
- 3:51Speaker 1: for the winning player. So you feel it. If he
- 3:54Speaker 1: takes him out in the fifth and then goes right
- 3:56Speaker 1: to the bullpen, you feel that win or lose. Guys
- 3:59Speaker 1: are talking a little bit behind the scenes. Oh, man,
- 4:01Speaker 1: why would we take him out? And that little conversation
- 4:04Speaker 1: carries over whether you think it does or not.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Look what happened to the Red Sox and the Wild
- 4:10Speaker 2: Card Series and the Sonny Gray game, you know, like.
- 4:13Speaker 2: not riding with your guy who's been your dude all
- 4:15Speaker 2: year and I think it just comes down to the
- 4:18Speaker 2: manager having the right trust in guys like you know
- 4:21Speaker 2: you build a sense of trust throughout the season and
- 4:25Speaker 2: he trusts Drew Rasmussen more than he did anybody down
- 4:27Speaker 2: there in the bullpen at the moment and there's nobody
- 4:30Speaker 2: that knows that team better than the guys in that
- 4:32Speaker 2: locker room and that coaching staff and Kevin Cash and
- 4:35Speaker 2: so sticking with him you know it sets you up
- 4:38Speaker 2: as a manager for criticism right like why wouldn't you
- 4:40Speaker 2: do this why would you do that and all that
- 4:41Speaker 2: bull crap but I tell you the one that stood
- 4:44Speaker 2: out to me brings in Tyler Wells against Jose Ramirez,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and he gets a huge out. His numbers versus Jose Ramirez,
- 4:52Speaker 2: Jose Ramirez three for six with a home run and
- 4:54Speaker 2: two extra base hits. And he brings a man in
- 4:57Speaker 2: a 3-1 game with a man on first or second,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I can't remember. But in that moment, you're like, oh, boy,
- 5:05Speaker 2: is this the right move? And Tyler Wells makes your
- 5:08Speaker 2: manager look good. Again, good players makes great managers.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Again, this is going to be a huge shout-out to
- 5:17Speaker 1: the Braves organization. Tyler Wells and Brian Baker were mid-level,
- 5:23Speaker 1: middle reliever bullpen guys in Baltimore. They get them over.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Brian Baker's the best closer in the game this year,
- 5:30Speaker 1: one of the best closers. And Tyler Wells now is
- 5:32Speaker 1: his setup man. I always thought Tyler Wells was nasty.
- 5:35Speaker 1: He had a little bit of success, but he kind
- 5:37Speaker 1: of faded there in Baltimore. But, again, the Rays just
- 5:41Speaker 1: identifying guys with good stuff that they know that they
- 5:44Speaker 1: can turn into seems like super. So, obviously, the mental
- 5:48Speaker 1: capacity has to be there on these guys. But two
- 5:52Speaker 1: guys they acquired via trade, and that's what these smaller
- 5:55Speaker 1: teams have to do. But, yeah, they've been lights out.
- 5:58Speaker 1: My question, Rossi, for you is you said building trust.
- 6:03Speaker 1: In today's game, and you managed, how– How can guys,
- 6:08Speaker 1: especially starters, build trust if they get to 85 to
- 6:13Speaker 1: 95 pitches in the sixth or seventh and they want
- 6:16Speaker 1: to go back out, but you're pulling them?
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you look back on the history that
- 6:21Speaker 2: you've dealt with them all season when you get to
- 6:23Speaker 2: this time of year, and you're watching the radar gun
- 6:27Speaker 2: a little bit. You're watching the number, but it's the
- 6:29Speaker 2: strike throwing. It's the swings that the opponents are taking
- 6:32Speaker 2: off of him. I thought he had some hard-hit balls there.
- 6:35Speaker 2: in the six and got out of some, some trouble
- 6:40Speaker 2: a little bit. So I, I didn't think he was
- 6:41Speaker 2: going back out for the seventh or maybe he was
- 6:43Speaker 2: going to be batter to batter. And then the leadoff
- 6:44Speaker 2: guy got on and a really nice at bat from
- 6:49Speaker 2: chase to lauder. And, you know, he stuck with him
- 6:53Speaker 2: and he gets that big double play. He gets a
- 6:56Speaker 2: pop up and then a big double play. And that's
- 6:59Speaker 2: why you got a guy that's your, your horse, your ace. And,
- 7:03Speaker 2: He's built that trust throughout the season, and you're watching
- 7:05Speaker 2: the game. I always like watching the at-bats. Like, are
- 7:08Speaker 2: they seeing him? Just like you said yesterday on the pod,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I love facing a guy the same time through. And
- 7:13Speaker 2: even as a bad hitter that I was, like, I
- 7:16Speaker 2: thought I had the best chance seeing the guy for
- 7:18Speaker 2: the third time, right? Those numbers are real. But there's
- 7:21Speaker 2: certain guys that you trust that can kind of, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: tighten up their jockstrap and get after it in moments
- 7:26Speaker 2: like that and finish. Tighten the jockstrap, huh? Yeah. I
- 7:29Speaker 2: didn't the jockstrap, but finish, but finish in a freaking game.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And you know, the nerves are gonna, there's times when
- 7:36Speaker 2: I walked out and grabbed a ball from a guy
- 7:38Speaker 2: and they're shaking, handing me the ball. And I'm like,
- 7:41Speaker 2: thank God I came out and got this guy out
- 7:43Speaker 2: of the other gang. Cause he, his nerves are wrecked
- 7:47Speaker 2: right now. And you learn that stuff throughout the season.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So a good move by cashy. He knows his team. And,
- 7:53Speaker 2: you know, I'm sure there's a lot of people that
- 7:55Speaker 2: were there in the media and us, you know, Well.
- 7:59Speaker 3: It's easy to play Monday morning quarterback now. Right, that's
- 8:02Speaker 3: what I mean.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We're behind a mic. I feel like there's so many
- 8:06Speaker 1: times where a star's about to be born and then
- 8:12Speaker 1: we put a governor on them in these games. And
- 8:16Speaker 1: I understand the numbers say one thing, but then the
- 8:19Speaker 1: eye test says another. Like how much does, say you
- 8:24Speaker 1: have a pitcher out, he's at 105 pitches through seven, right?
- 8:30Speaker 1: dominating you know he's done but the matchups are favorable
- 8:35Speaker 1: out in the eighth are you sending them back out
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the eighth like it's got to be such a
- 8:38Speaker 1: hard decision for these managers I.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Think the the way guys pitch with a little bit
- 8:43Speaker 2: more you know I think Drew Rasmus is a true
- 8:45Speaker 2: pitcher like he's moving the ball in out up down
- 8:48Speaker 2: you know changing speeds cutters.
- 8:50Speaker 3: He's a pitcher he's not more stuff.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah and so like some of these guys are max
- 8:55Speaker 2: effort dudes and so I think they just run out
- 8:58Speaker 2: of gas probably a little bit earlier i mean when
- 9:00Speaker 2: i was coming up like 115 was pretty normal you
- 9:03Speaker 2: know like the 100 pitch mark wasn't a thing you
- 9:07Speaker 2: know it was just like we're gonna watch and see
- 9:08Speaker 2: how the game played.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Out dude i felt like you were like here you
- 9:11Speaker 1: go especially in the american league where you couldn't double
- 9:14Speaker 1: switch i felt like it was you know 115 pitches
- 9:17Speaker 1: like here you go And if you gave up three
- 9:24Speaker 1: or four or five runs early, it was like, you
- 9:26Speaker 1: better go fucking figure out how to get through five
- 9:28Speaker 1: or six innings.
- 9:29Speaker 3: You're wearing this.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Front offices will say, you know, I may have said
- 9:33Speaker 2: this before, but we'd rather you be too early than
- 9:35Speaker 2: too late. And that's how they think. So you feel
- 9:38Speaker 2: a little bit of that sitting in the seat. And also... Man, bullpens,
- 9:43Speaker 2: as we're seeing, especially on good teams, are just have
- 9:46Speaker 2: electric stuff and really hard to, and you said it
- 9:49Speaker 2: last night too, like I was trying to get that
- 9:50Speaker 2: third at bat because the bullpen stuff is so nasty.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Whether it's a known guy or an unknown guy coming
- 9:55Speaker 2: from the minor leagues, they usually got electric stuff. Maybe
- 9:58Speaker 2: they struggle throwing strikes, but there's usually plus secondary along
- 10:01Speaker 2: with legit velocity so um I think that's what makes
- 10:05Speaker 2: it makes it so tough as a manager is um
- 10:08Speaker 2: there are guys you try like bro I I trust
- 10:12Speaker 2: Kyle Hendricks with my life when I was managing like
- 10:14Speaker 2: you know I'm watching that game And I have so
- 10:16Speaker 2: much trust in his demeanor and how he handles the situations.
- 10:19Speaker 2: And he's always one ground ball away from getting out
- 10:22Speaker 2: of something. And, you know, that can get you in
- 10:24Speaker 2: trouble too. Cause you, you build too much trust in
- 10:26Speaker 2: a guy and you don't trust anybody in that bullpen
- 10:30Speaker 2: and the strength of your team, right? Like we all
- 10:32Speaker 2: know by this time of year, what the strengths of
- 10:34Speaker 2: the team are. You're not going to see the Milwaukee
- 10:37Speaker 2: Brewers have a guy probably going to the seventh, unless
- 10:39Speaker 2: they've got a no hit one hit or the gate
- 10:41Speaker 2: or the game's not close, you know?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Cause they've got such a good bullpen. Yeah. What about
- 10:46Speaker 2: Steve and Quan? How about that play off the wall?
- 10:50Speaker 2: You know, wasn't quite a home run in the replay.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Amazing defense from both teams.
- 10:55Speaker 1: It seemed like the Guardians were going to mount a comeback. Like,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I felt like... It did feel that way. There was
- 11:01Speaker 1: a big hit coming, and it just didn't come. And
- 11:05Speaker 1: now it's tough. They're down 3-2. I love that they
- 11:09Speaker 1: pick up right back tomorrow for both ends, right? For
- 11:11Speaker 1: the Rays, there's no time to think about, oh, we're
- 11:13Speaker 1: one game away. No, let's get back home. Let's play
- 11:16Speaker 1: a baseball game. And for the Guardians too, it's like,
- 11:18Speaker 1: all right, we hit the road. All the boys get
- 11:20Speaker 1: to regroup on the plane. And then let's figure out
- 11:23Speaker 1: a way to win a baseball game tomorrow.
- 11:24Speaker 2: There's something about the warm summer air and a cold
- 11:27Speaker 2: corona with Lyme that makes the roar of the crowd
- 11:29Speaker 2: sound a lot like the roar of the waves.
- 11:32Speaker 4: That's because this is our playa and the best seats
- 11:34Speaker 4: are always wherever you're sitting.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Whether it's a weeknight game under the lights or a
- 11:38Speaker 2: Sunday afternoon in the sun, you know baseball isn't about
- 11:41Speaker 2: rushing around. It's about settling in letting the game come
- 11:44Speaker 2: to you. And nothing pairs better than an ice-cold Corona.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 11:50Speaker 4: So find your seat, your Corona, and your line, because
- 11:54Speaker 4: real fans know the only thing better than nine innings
- 11:57Speaker 4: is extra innings, especially on La Playa. Corona. La Playa awaits.

- 12:07Speaker 2: ordercorona.com for 21 plus. Relax responsibly. Corona Extra Beer, imported
- 12:13Speaker 2: by Crown Imports, Chicago, Illinois. What's up, guys? I need
- 12:17Speaker 2: to tell you about this new prediction market called Polymarket.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It's the best new way to trade in sports. In
- 12:23Speaker 2: the past, if you wanted action on the game, you'd
- 12:25Speaker 2: put some money in, and if your team was doing
- 12:27Speaker 2: well and you wanted to cash out, they'd lock the
- 12:30Speaker 2: trade and take a huge fee. But Polymarket is a
- 12:33Speaker 2: prediction market. It's a stock exchange for sports, buying in
- 12:36Speaker 2: and selling out on your terms. I've tried them all,
- 12:39Speaker 2: and Polymarket is simply the best prediction market. better than DraftKings, FanDuel, Kalshi,
- 12:45Speaker 2: you name it. They're so confident you'll never go back
- 12:47Speaker 2: to the other guys. They're giving you a free $ 25
- 12:50Speaker 2: on your first trade when you deposit just $ 10. And
- 12:52Speaker 2: now they've launched a new feature, Squads, a group chat
- 12:56Speaker 2: where you can see what everyone is trading. So download
- 12:59Speaker 2: the Polymarket app today and use the code ROSSRIZZO when
- 13:02Speaker 2: you sign up. That's code ROSSRIZZO and get $ 25 free
- 13:05Speaker 2: after you deposit just $ 10.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 2: One negative town. I didn't love the Caminero taking him
- 13:13Speaker 2: out for defensive replacement. I don't love that move by Cash.
- 13:17Speaker 2: He's twice now he's done in the postseason in a
- 13:20Speaker 2: close game. If they tie that up with a home run,
- 13:22Speaker 2: you're without one of your bigger hitters. I know he
- 13:24Speaker 2: had been swinging it great, but did get a big
- 13:26Speaker 2: double last night. You know, and then I'm blanking on
- 13:30Speaker 2: who came in to play second, but Taylor made double
- 13:33Speaker 2: play after the leadoff guy got on in the ninth.
- 13:37Speaker 2: he kind of throws one in the crapper, and then
- 13:40Speaker 2: they end up getting out of it. But that was
- 13:43Speaker 2: one of those where I'm like, man, I don't love
- 13:45Speaker 2: that move. It was like when they would pinch run
- 13:47Speaker 2: for David Ortiz. He would get on late in the
- 13:49Speaker 2: game when I was in Boston. It felt like, fuck,
- 13:51Speaker 2: if they tie this up, we're without our dude.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I never– you can't ever take out your best
- 13:59Speaker 1: top two players, right, ever.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I feel like ever. But, hey– What do we know, Rossi?
- 14:05Speaker 1: We're just streamers now.
- 14:08Speaker 2: That's right. Hello, YouTube!
- 14:12Speaker 3: Rossi, game six tomorrow. Who do we got?
- 14:16Speaker 1: Polymarket.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Polymarket pick. Rays are 57% to the yes. 100 gets
- 14:21Speaker 2: you 170. The Guardians are 43% to the yes. 100
- 14:23Speaker 2: gets you 221. The money's on the Guardians, but With
- 14:31Speaker 2: the opener and the bullpen and all these back-to-back days,
- 14:35Speaker 2: the Rays hitters have seen them. They got Peralta on
- 14:39Speaker 2: the mound. You know, I'm going with the Rays, 57%
- 14:44Speaker 2: to the yes. I've got to go with them. At home,
- 14:47Speaker 2: the momentum, they're going to be sniffing the World Series.
- 14:50Speaker 2: My polymarket pick for today, for game six, will be
- 14:55Speaker 2: the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 14:56Speaker 3: There you go.
- 14:57Speaker 1: You know, I think that Stephen Vo is going to
- 14:59Speaker 1: just This is obviously backs against the wall elimination. Look,
- 15:02Speaker 1: the Guardians, if you're a Guardians fan, your back's been
- 15:06Speaker 1: against the wall all season for the most part, right?
- 15:08Speaker 1: You snuck in. You won the division at late. Your
- 15:12Speaker 1: team is used to this. They come back down 0-2.
- 15:15Speaker 1: So I can see Steven Vo just managing his game
- 15:18Speaker 1: like he did in the division series. Backs against the wall.
- 15:22Speaker 1: He's going to throw all of his best arms. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: if they get an early lead, I see them winning
- 15:27Speaker 1: and forcing a game seven, but they have to get
- 15:29Speaker 1: the lead. That's the.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Thing. And the Rays have woken up.
- 15:36Speaker 2: The Rays are alive.
- 15:37Speaker 1: We are on track for my partners. Look, a lot
- 15:41Speaker 1: of baseball left. Still 27 outs to be made on
- 15:44Speaker 1: each end. A lot of baseball left with Rossi. Your wisdom,
- 15:49Speaker 1: your age, your experience is about to show. predicting a
- 15:54Speaker 1: raise brewers world series of Tampa Bay wins one more game.
- 15:58Speaker 1: So that would be, we'll see.
- 16:00Speaker 2: That would be the first time I feel like I've
- 16:02Speaker 2: gotten these right. I don't, I, we gotta have Chris
- 16:04Speaker 2: check my, uh, poly market percentages here and, uh, and
- 16:08Speaker 2: how good I'm doing. But, um, yeah, I, I trust me.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I'm rooting hard for the raise close to home. Be
- 16:14Speaker 2: easy to travel for ESPN. I will be on site
- 16:17Speaker 2: for the world series pre and post at ESPN. I
- 16:20Speaker 2: can't wait for that. And, um, Getting out of here soon. But, yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 2: it feels like some things are starting to work out
- 16:27Speaker 2: in my prediction category, especially for that.
- 16:29Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I got the Rays winning. Watching Milwaukee in that first series,
- 16:33Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, against the Dodgers.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I was like, ooh.
- 16:35Speaker 1: They got to get there first. They got to get there.
- 16:37Speaker 1: They got to get there. They got to get there.
- 16:38Speaker 1: We'll do a full preview of that. All right, Rossi,
- 16:41Speaker 1: let's take some Tim Buss ball back. Questions of the day.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Hottest topics from around Major League Baseball.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Really, life, sports, all sports. We want to talk other sports.
- 16:51Speaker 3: We're here.

- 17:01Speaker 1: all around. We are just getting going on Ross and
- 17:04Speaker 1: Rizzo Unfiltered. Our first question, Rossi, a YouTube comment from Jan3443.
- 17:09Speaker 1: What up, Jan? Love the travel stories in the last episode.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Thank you, Jan, for watching. Appreciate it. I've always wondered
- 17:19Speaker 1: about this myself. I've also wondered if any players... Any players' belongings,
- 17:23Speaker 1: including uniform, were lost or left behind. How is something
- 17:27Speaker 1: like that resolved?
- 17:29Speaker 3: Ooh. All right.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Well, I've got one good story.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I have a tremendous story.
- 17:36Speaker 2: First of all, if something's left behind, the locker, the
- 17:39Speaker 2: clubhouse guys usually will call and your guys double-check. They're
- 17:43Speaker 2: on top of it. Like we said, those guys are
- 17:45Speaker 2: the best. It's like having your own personal assistant, except
- 17:49Speaker 2: there's 26 of us plus coaches. Um, we were in
- 17:52Speaker 2: Oakland when I was managing and at night, uh, someone
- 17:57Speaker 2: had broken into the coaches locker room and stole, stole
- 18:03Speaker 2: all their, I think watches and cologne and like just
- 18:06Speaker 2: some like nice things. And Oakland reimbursed them. Um, they've
- 18:10Speaker 2: caught on, they found on camera who it was, uh,
- 18:13Speaker 2: caught the person have to be somebody in house, let
- 18:16Speaker 2: them go. And, um, Yeah, they got all the stuff.
- 18:20Speaker 2: The coaches got their stuff back or reimbursed them for
- 18:23Speaker 2: that stuff. Yeah, so a really good job. Yeah, a
- 18:25Speaker 2: really good job by the Oakland Athletics of being on
- 18:28Speaker 2: top of that because obviously you walk in and all
- 18:30Speaker 2: your stuff's gone. You're pissed off. But let's hear your story.
- 18:34Speaker 2: It's probably better than mine.
- 18:35Speaker 1: We're in Cincinnati, right, with the Cubs. And Cincinnati in
- 18:40Speaker 1: the summer, it feels like it rains every day there,
- 18:43Speaker 1: especially in the afternoons. So rain delay, so we don't
- 18:46Speaker 1: take BP. So it's basically a show and go. And
- 18:50Speaker 1: first day there, right? We're in the middle of a
- 18:52Speaker 1: long stretch. So we're coming, I believe from Wrigley. So
- 18:56Speaker 1: show and go, I get to the field late. Tarps
- 18:59Speaker 1: on the field. We're starting on time though. Maybe a
- 19:04Speaker 1: little bit of a delay. And so I go through
- 19:07Speaker 1: my pregame routine is like on a show and go day.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I don't do anything until about an hour and 10
- 19:13Speaker 1: minutes before the game. So I shower, start getting loose
- 19:17Speaker 1: to go into the gym and warm up. And I'm
- 19:21Speaker 1: looking at for my glove and I don't have my glove.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Like I just happened as I was getting dressed to
- 19:27Speaker 1: go to the gym before I went to hit.
- 19:29Speaker 3: I didn't have my glove. I'm like, oh, fuck.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I don't have my first baseman glove, like my practice
- 19:34Speaker 1: one or my game one. So I call Otis over
- 19:38Speaker 1: and Danny Mueller. And I'm like, boys, I don't have
- 19:41Speaker 1: my glove. Like we must have left in Chicago. Of course,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I didn't see it because we didn't do anything before
- 19:46Speaker 1: the game, so why would I be looking for that?
- 19:48Speaker 3: I just expected to be there.
- 19:50Speaker 1: So we call over to the Reds and I'm like, well,
- 19:54Speaker 1: Votto's a righty, so I can't use his glove. I
- 19:57Speaker 1: was thinking maybe we just like leave the glove at
- 19:59Speaker 1: first base and they have no left-handed first base gloves
- 20:02Speaker 1: over there. So Danny Mueller, our clubhouse tenant runs the
- 20:06Speaker 1: like a Dick's Sporting Glove.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Stop. I swear.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Grabs a Rawlings glove, just a stock Rawlings glove. I
- 20:15Speaker 1: get it maybe 10 minutes before the game. And I
- 20:18Speaker 1: throw it. How I would break my gloves in, I
- 20:20Speaker 1: would throw them in the oven to loosen the leather.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So I literally throw it in the oven for like
- 20:25Speaker 1: two minutes, go to a machine, and just start hammering
- 20:29Speaker 1: fastballs out of a pitching machine to break it in.
- 20:32Speaker 1: And I play the game. My dad still has the glove.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And I made, like, a really nice play and a
- 20:37Speaker 1: nice pick with it. Bro, it was like a freaking
- 20:40Speaker 1: frying pan I was using. That would be my worst nightmare.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Like, your glove's like your security blanket when you're playing
- 20:47Speaker 2: in the big leagues. Like, that's, I don't care. Like,
- 20:49Speaker 2: I'll grab somebody else's bat, have an AB, fine. Do
- 20:52Speaker 2: not mess with my glove. That, I can't believe that.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I've never heard that. That's unbelievable. I'd be scared. The
- 20:59Speaker 2: first baseman has a brand new mitt off of the
- 21:02Speaker 2: rack at Dix. From Dix? Oh my God. Shout out
- 21:06Speaker 2: Dick's not a sponsor to it. Wish it was right.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Golly.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 3: That's unbelievable. All right.
- 21:13Speaker 2: What a good story.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Uh, next email from Matt Schmitz as a Padres fan.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I was always big on you Rizzo when you were,
- 21:21Speaker 2: when we got you, I was a little frustrated when
- 21:23Speaker 2: we moved you, but wondered what was like in a
- 21:27Speaker 2: few months you had in San Diego. And if you
- 21:30Speaker 2: had hope to establish yourself there, obviously things worked out
- 21:33Speaker 2: for you in Chicago.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, thanks, Matt. I appreciate that. Matt, I
- 21:37Speaker 3: was a Padre, too.
- 21:38Speaker 2: You just don't remember? What the hell?
- 21:42Speaker 3: He may be a younger fan. Maybe, maybe.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I got traded for Adrian Gonzalez, and
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'm part of that trade, and I get called up,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and it was like this whole Rizzo mania thing, and I.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Was just overmatched. I really was.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I needed to make adjustments, and I went back down
- 22:01Speaker 1: and got sent down that year to... Got called up
- 22:06Speaker 1: in September. And then that offseason, I had to make
- 22:09Speaker 1: big adjustments, and I did. But getting traded was a
- 22:15Speaker 1: weird feeling because they had traded for Yonder Alonzo that offseason.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And I get a call from the GM because Jed
- 22:22Speaker 1: Hoyer and Jason McCloud went over to Chicago early in
- 22:25Speaker 1: that offseason. Just saying, hey, you're still a big part
- 22:28Speaker 1: of our future.
- 22:30Speaker 3: You're one of our guys. And then literally three days later,
- 22:32Speaker 3: I get traded. So I was like, Oh, okay.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Sounds good. But yeah, I mean, obviously wherever you play,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you want to establish yourself and be there for a
- 22:42Speaker 1: long time. And for me, it ended up in Chicago.
- 22:45Speaker 1: My time in Chicago was incredible, but playing in San Diego,
- 22:49Speaker 1: it wasn't like though the San Diego we see now,
- 22:51Speaker 1: like the, the fans there weren't packing it out like
- 22:55Speaker 1: they do now. That place now is one of the
- 22:56Speaker 1: best places to play in all of sports, how much
- 23:00Speaker 1: Petco gets rocking. So, um, Yeah, but I enjoyed my
- 23:04Speaker 1: time there. Ross, did you enjoy your time in San Diego?
- 23:06Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 23:07Speaker 2: San Diego is one of those destinations that's nice every
- 23:12Speaker 2: single day. The weather, obviously, that park is top-notch and new,
- 23:17Speaker 2: and what they're doing now is great. But I loved
- 23:18Speaker 2: my time. I got to play against them at Qualcomm
- 23:22Speaker 2: with the Dodgers when I was coming up, and then
- 23:23Speaker 2: I got traded there as well from Pittsburgh. Yeah. That's
- 23:29Speaker 2: a great place to play. We had great teammates. Petey,
- 23:31Speaker 2: I had so many great teammates there. It's such a
- 23:34Speaker 2: beautiful place. The city, the town, just how they embrace
- 23:39Speaker 2: the military, all that stuff there. It's a cool spot
- 23:42Speaker 2: for sure.
- 23:43Speaker 3: I loved it there.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I was only there for a little bit, but I
- 23:45Speaker 2: loved it.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Email from Joe Amoroso from Atlanta, a town. Certain teams
- 23:53Speaker 1: seemingly always have a rash of injuries every year while
- 23:56Speaker 1: other organizations are usually healthy. Do you think this stems
- 23:59Speaker 1: from their strength and conditioning programs or just dumb, bad luck?
- 24:04Speaker 2: Ooh, good. You know, that's a really good question. I think,
- 24:08Speaker 2: you know what? I talked to Theo Epstein on this
- 24:11Speaker 2: topic about what's going to be the next game changer
- 24:15Speaker 2: in our game when I was in the front office. And,
- 24:18Speaker 2: you know, there had been so many like the pitching
- 24:20Speaker 2: and the labs and the technology and, And what's the
- 24:23Speaker 2: next game changer? And he told me health, like keeping
- 24:26Speaker 2: guys healthy on the field is like if you can
- 24:29Speaker 2: figure out a way to do that, you're going to
- 24:31Speaker 2: be head and shoulders above the rest. And now teams
- 24:33Speaker 2: are hiring biomechanic guys. And, you know, there's a lot
- 24:38Speaker 2: of real research that goes into how to keep these
- 24:42Speaker 2: guys healthy. And each team's involved in that. So I
- 24:44Speaker 2: do think that's really important. I do think a good
- 24:47Speaker 2: strength and conditioning program, you know, is around some of
- 24:50Speaker 2: the Dodger guys. when I was with the WBC and
- 24:52Speaker 2: they use a lot of water bags and stuff and to,
- 24:55Speaker 2: to be able to, to contrast the muscle, he was
- 24:58Speaker 2: kind of explained to me, it's kind of over my head, but, um,
- 25:01Speaker 2: it's just real thought that goes into a lot of stuff.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And I do think you have an advantage if you're
- 25:05Speaker 2: able to do that. Um, I do think there's just
- 25:07Speaker 2: some bad luck within there. Guys are going to get hurt,
- 25:10Speaker 2: you know, especially on the pitching side. But, um, I
- 25:13Speaker 2: know teams look really hard at the injuries when they
- 25:15Speaker 2: pop up, they look at the training staff, how cutting
- 25:18Speaker 2: edge are they, how are they, how are these guys, uh,
- 25:21Speaker 2: one preventative maintenance has gotten to be, I mean, I
- 25:25Speaker 2: don't think you can have enough trainers. And I was
- 25:28Speaker 2: having this conversation with a pitching guy the other day,
- 25:30Speaker 2: you know, some of these teams have their own trainer
- 25:31Speaker 2: for just the pitching staff now. And if you can
- 25:34Speaker 2: keep those guys healthy and monitoring those guys and take
- 25:37Speaker 2: that off the plate of the regular pitching coach and
- 25:40Speaker 2: the regular trainer, I think you're at an advantage. So
- 25:44Speaker 2: those departments, strength and conditioning and the, and the, and
- 25:47Speaker 2: the training room, the medical staff is so dang important.
- 25:51Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 25:52Speaker 1: The biomechanics of it all. I was actually just talking
- 25:54Speaker 1: about this today with one of my friends here. They're like,
- 25:57Speaker 1: how are these guys throwing so hard? And I'm like,
- 26:00Speaker 1: because now there we have technology where if you have
- 26:03Speaker 1: a tight hip, you can unlock it. And by unlocking it,
- 26:07Speaker 1: you get around it more and you can get into
- 26:09Speaker 1: your legs more. And that means you can strengthen your
- 26:11Speaker 1: legs more to push off, to throw harder.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Where, you know, seven years ago, oh, I have a
- 26:17Speaker 1: tight hip.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Just do this hip flexor stretch. Hopefully it gets better.
- 26:20Speaker 1: There was, there wasn't intent behind some of the things
- 26:24Speaker 1: you do now in the strength and conditioning world. Um,
- 26:27Speaker 1: so that is very important.
- 26:28Speaker 3: A lot of it is like, I'm a big believer
- 26:32Speaker 3: in balance, right? You have a lot, you have some.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Guys that are super like by the book, healthy water,
- 26:41Speaker 1: they're clean, clean, clean, clean, clean. And the, I feel
- 26:45Speaker 1: like if you're that extreme, um, As soon as something
- 26:48Speaker 1: bad goes in your body, your body doesn't know how
- 26:50Speaker 1: to handle it. You know, I don't know for you, Rossi,
- 26:53Speaker 1: but you ever eat healthy?
- 26:53Speaker 2: Can't pull fat. That's how I came up. Can't pull fat.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Can't pull fat.
- 26:57Speaker 1: But you ever go into like a super healthy diet
- 27:00Speaker 1: for a week after like not eating healthy and your
- 27:03Speaker 1: stomach just flushes everything out?
- 27:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Right?
- 27:06Speaker 1: Like that's the other end where if you're so healthy
- 27:08Speaker 1: and you put something bad in. Like Matt Caesar, right?
- 27:11Speaker 1: And he wouldn't mind me telling this story. He hurt
- 27:14Speaker 1: his hamstring one day. Because we were flying and he
- 27:19Speaker 1: swears it was from this Coke that he drank on
- 27:21Speaker 1: the plane. He's like, I haven't drank Coke in two years.
- 27:23Speaker 1: And the next day he tweaked his hammy. Because he's,
- 27:26Speaker 1: Cesar is yoked. Like 2% body fat. We used to
- 27:29Speaker 1: work out all the time. Well, I try to keep
- 27:31Speaker 1: up with him, but freak. So a lot of, you
- 27:35Speaker 1: just have that balance. Like any little thing, like dehydration is,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I think, the key to staying healthy.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Or hydration.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Because we travel so much. All of the games that
- 27:45Speaker 1: we play. But everyone's body is different. It's a good question.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Though, Joe. Yeah, well said.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Well said.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Awesome. Another episode in the books. We got game six
- 27:55Speaker 1: of the ALCS. We'll be coming back to you with
- 27:58Speaker 1: our reactions. We may have the 2026 World Series punched
- 28:03Speaker 1: next time we are on air, Rossi. So hopefully buckle up.
- 28:07Speaker 1: It's going to be.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I don't even know what type of World Series it's
- 28:11Speaker 1: going to be with the teams that are in it.
- 28:13Speaker 1: But we are going to be covering it 24-7.
- 28:16Speaker 2: It's going to be exciting because we're going to be
- 28:18Speaker 2: talking to our fans and the people that follow us.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Thank everyone for watching and listening. Remind you to submit
- 28:25Speaker 2: your questions to rossandrizzo.com at Gmail, I'm sorry, and YouTube
- 28:32Speaker 2: comments or emails, whatever. Send them all. You're better at
- 28:35Speaker 2: closing these things out. But I just wanted to get
- 28:38Speaker 2: on here and thank our little personal community that's following us.
- 28:41Speaker 2: And we love the questions. They're so good.
- 28:43Speaker 3: And we love you.
- 28:45Speaker 2: That's all.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Ross Rizzo, out.
