- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Emily coming in to your feed with
- 0:25Speaker 1: the first installment of.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Five Minute Friday for season five.
- 0:29Speaker 1: If you are new to hurdle, if you need a
- 0:31Speaker 1: little bit of a refresher, On five Minute Friday, I
- 0:35Speaker 1: share a story, something that's going on in my life,
- 0:37Speaker 1: I offer up a thought prompt to take you into
- 0:40Speaker 1: the weekend, and then I finish us off with a
- 0:43Speaker 1: few highlights of the week, some content picks that I
- 0:46Speaker 1: want to share.
- 0:47Speaker 2: With you all.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So this week, okay, this is a positive story, although
- 0:54Speaker 1: it has a it was a hard week for me.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I got many, okay for to be specific, emails that
- 1:08Speaker 1: were kind of a letdown, just like hit after hit
- 1:13Speaker 1: of work related news which just wasn't.
- 1:16Speaker 2: What I wanted to hear.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Whether it was, you know, one about a project that
- 1:22Speaker 1: I literally poured hours and hours into over the holidays.
- 1:25Speaker 1: No less, that project got canned because of a shift
- 1:29Speaker 1: in the company.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Strategy that I was working with.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Another guest had to cancel a recording that I was
- 1:36Speaker 1: really looking forward to and worked really hard to secure
- 1:40Speaker 1: this opportunity. And then just some others that I won't
- 1:43Speaker 1: get into now. But it just felt like I this week,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like I would be running and it felt like I
- 1:49Speaker 1: couldn't get my feet under me. And then I got
- 1:51Speaker 1: knocked down, and then I got back up, and then
- 1:53Speaker 1: I was moving forward and I finally felt like I
- 1:55Speaker 1: was back in my groove again, and then I got
- 1:58Speaker 1: knocked down. And I just know that, man, if you
- 2:00Speaker 1: can probably relate to this feeling. So I'm sitting at
- 2:03Speaker 1: my desk and I was looking out the window and
- 2:05Speaker 1: thinking to myself about like the two different mindsets that
- 2:09Speaker 1: one can often have in this frustrating scenario. Right, There's
- 2:13Speaker 1: like the first mindset, which is like, Okay, let's focus
- 2:16Speaker 1: on the positives here, get your shit together. It's really
- 2:21Speaker 1: awesome that you have earned your seat at this table,
- 2:24Speaker 1: that your name is even in the ring for these things,
- 2:28Speaker 1: that your hard work is paying off. And you know what,
- 2:31Speaker 1: like this one thing not going as you had hoped,
- 2:35Speaker 1: it's okay because it's going to open up your energy
- 2:39Speaker 1: and your time for like the thing that is gonna
- 2:41Speaker 1: be the thing.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So that's headspace number one. Headspace number two, it's you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: woe is me? Why as just just sucking? I'm crying, Like,
- 2:54Speaker 1: can I just feel sad for a little bit?
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, like that one.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And I know I've told this story on the show before,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but I feel like it's a great time to bring
- 3:04Speaker 1: it back into the mix. When I was the fitness
- 3:06Speaker 1: editor atself in twenty sixteen, I was working on a
- 3:09Speaker 1: package for our Olympics themed issue and I interviewed a hurdler,
- 3:15Speaker 1: a serious hurdler named Don Harper Nelson, and Don talked
- 3:19Speaker 1: to me about the World Championships in Beijing in twenty
- 3:21Speaker 1: fifteen when she tripped over the second hurdle in one
- 3:25Speaker 1: of her races, and she was mortified and angry and
- 3:31Speaker 1: understandably upset, and she literally jumped a couple offenses so
- 3:35Speaker 1: that she didn't have to go toward where all the
- 3:37Speaker 1: media were waiting to talk to the athletes. And I
- 3:41Speaker 1: think she was in that process or thinking about undergoing
- 3:45Speaker 1: that process, when she finally stopped for a moment and
- 3:49Speaker 1: took a breath, and she realized in that moment, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's something I'd come back to time and time again,
- 3:53Speaker 1: which is why I'm sharing it with you possibly again,
- 3:56Speaker 1: that she had the opportunity in this moment to be
- 3:59Speaker 1: a upset for sure, that she knew she didn't work
- 4:03Speaker 1: that hard to quote unquote fail. But she also understood
- 4:07Speaker 1: that this was a teachable moment and that we have
- 4:10Speaker 1: the opportunity in all of these moments when things aren't
- 4:13Speaker 1: going as we had hoped to recognize the situation, take
- 4:18Speaker 1: a deep breath and learn from it. Talk about a
- 4:22Speaker 1: growth mindset, right. And So, as I was sitting here
- 4:25Speaker 1: at my desk thinking about all of this stuff, I
- 4:28Speaker 1: had my moment. I digested what was going on. I
- 4:32Speaker 1: talked it out with a friend, and then I decided
- 4:35Speaker 1: that headspace number one is just where it's at. I
- 4:40Speaker 1: am talking to you about this because lately, for me,
- 4:44Speaker 1: it feels as though the highlight reel is just in
- 4:47Speaker 1: full effect, like everyone around me is succeeding and their
- 4:52Speaker 1: life is all like glitz and glamor, even though they
- 4:55Speaker 1: are also like working from home and everything is going
- 4:58Speaker 1: right for everybody else, get me wrong, Like I love
- 5:01Speaker 1: to be your cheerleader. There's literally nothing that brings me
- 5:04Speaker 1: more joy. I love to see people succeed. I love
- 5:08Speaker 1: to cheer you on. I want to hype you up.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But it's just hard to not fall into the comparison trap,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Still, I know that everyone
- 5:19Speaker 1: is dealing with their own struggle, their own things that
- 5:23Speaker 1: we're not seeing on social media. And so I open
- 5:28Speaker 1: up with you here because I want you to know
- 5:31Speaker 1: if there is something that you are struggling with, that
- 5:33Speaker 1: you are not the only one in the struggle, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: you will never be the only one in the struggle,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and neither well I. The fact is that we need
- 5:40Speaker 1: to show up and be honest with one another so
- 5:42Speaker 1: that we can destigmatize this idea that everything is supposed
- 5:46Speaker 1: to be roses and flowers all of the time, because
- 5:50Speaker 1: I mean, don't get me wrong, like I would love
- 5:53Speaker 1: roses and flowers all the time, but life doesn't work
- 5:57Speaker 1: like that. And so I know that I'm not the
- 6:00Speaker 1: only person here sitting in her gray jumpsuit. And I
- 6:04Speaker 1: say that also because I'm sure that you were all
- 6:05Speaker 1: targeted for the very gray jumpsuit that I'm sitting here
- 6:08Speaker 1: wearing from old Navy. I know I'm not the only
- 6:11Speaker 1: person sitting here in her jumpsuit at her desk feeling
- 6:14Speaker 1: some kind of way. And I also know that I
- 6:18Speaker 1: have the opportunity to think about how I feel and
- 6:22Speaker 1: use that energy, use this frustration to level up to
- 6:26Speaker 1: go after the next thing.
- 6:27Speaker 2: That it is that I want and what a beautiful
- 6:30Speaker 2: opportunity that is this week.
- 6:33Speaker 1: For the prompt, I am asking you to get grateful
- 6:36Speaker 1: and come back to the idea.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Of focusing on the good.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So, what are three things that happen for you this
- 6:45Speaker 1: week that are your silver lining?
- 6:47Speaker 2: Again?
- 6:48Speaker 1: What are three things that happen for you this week
- 6:50Speaker 1: that are your silver lining highlights of the week. All
- 6:55Speaker 1: of this stuff links to the content can be found
- 6:59Speaker 1: in the show notes. First up, watch you knew this
- 7:02Speaker 1: was coming. Framing Britney spears Man this documentary it blew
- 7:07Speaker 1: my mind. I feel like I've heard about a lot
- 7:08Speaker 1: of these things over the years in all of the
- 7:11Speaker 1: news coverage, but unless you have been living under a rock,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know that. This week the New York Times released
- 7:19Speaker 1: a documentary that goes into the backstory of Britney spears
- 7:23Speaker 1: It details the circumstances surrounding her conservatorship, which we've heard
- 7:28Speaker 1: a lot about in the last few years, and the
- 7:30Speaker 1: quote unquote free Britney movement, and it really dives into,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, what she was going through, how she was
- 7:37Speaker 1: battling with all of these paparazzi, and the lifestyle that
- 7:41Speaker 1: came with being so famous at such a young age
- 7:43Speaker 1: and how that transitioned and kind of unfolded over time.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And yeah, this documentary was fascinating, so I would definitely
- 7:51Speaker 1: recommend it.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Another watch for you.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I got suckered into Firefly Lane, like I'm sure some
- 7:57Speaker 1: of you have as well. Firefly Lane is a series
- 8:00Speaker 1: on Netflix. It's with Catherine Heigel and Sarah Chuck and
- 8:03Speaker 1: it's the story of their friendship which starts when their
- 8:06Speaker 1: neighbors as young girls and preteens and goes into now
- 8:10Speaker 1: as they are older and with families and establishing their careers,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and you know, it's just a good, feel good binge.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Kind of situation. Listen, I don't know where I have been.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Maybe I've been under a rock, but Spotify does a
- 8:23Speaker 1: TVT playlist, and maybe.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I've been living under a rock.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But one of my Brooklyn track club teammates tweeted about
- 8:29Speaker 1: this yesterday, and this week's is awesome. I mean, it
- 8:34Speaker 1: starts off with my Boo by Usher, It's like all
- 8:37Speaker 1: Valentine's Day themed We've got like at Last by Edna James,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I Want to Know by Joe Adorn by Miguel Love
- 8:44Speaker 1: on Top Beyonce like these are the hits, and the
- 8:48Speaker 1: fact that it also caps off with Angel of Mine
- 8:52Speaker 1: by Monica like No Brain or for Me last highlight
- 8:56Speaker 1: to bring you this week. Listen how to Do Nothing
- 8:58Speaker 1: with Jenny Odell on ten Percent Happier. If you're the
- 9:02Speaker 1: kind of person who feels externer pressure to be constantly productive,
- 9:05Speaker 1: It's a theme that we talk about a lot on
- 9:06Speaker 1: the show.
- 9:07Speaker 2: You are not alone.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I'm sitting here like raising my hand, and that's really
- 9:14Speaker 1: what they're diving into here on ten percent Happier. Jenny
- 9:17Speaker 1: Odell is a lecturer in the Stanford Department of Art
- 9:20Speaker 1: in art History. She's also a best selling author of
- 9:22Speaker 1: the book How to Do Nothing, and in this conversation
- 9:26Speaker 1: she talks about the importance of planned or unplanned moments
- 9:30Speaker 1: where you do nothing and how they can be really
- 9:34Speaker 1: beneficial for you.
- 9:35Speaker 2: So give that a listen. Let's wrap about it. In
- 9:38Speaker 2: the DMS, I Am all Ears.
