- 0:01Speaker 1: On Friday, June 21st, 2014, 26-year-old Diana Dubé went missing.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Diana's last message to her mother early that morning stated
- 0:12Speaker 1: only that she would not be returning home. Then, there
- 0:15Speaker 1: was silence. Investigators tracked clues left behind from her last
- 0:20Speaker 1: night out, friends and witnesses who helped piece together a
- 0:23Speaker 1: timeline and point them towards a suspect. Days later, Diana's
- 0:29Speaker 1: car was discovered abandoned in a store parking lot an
- 0:32Speaker 1: hour from her home. And yet more devastating discoveries were
- 0:37Speaker 1: still to be made. Hi there, I'm Kevin and welcome
- 0:45Speaker 1: to Just Thought Lounge. Today's case unravels rapidly. A mysterious
- 0:50Speaker 1: missing persons turned into a manhunt which led to an
- 0:53Speaker 1: arrest and it all came together inside of one week.
- 0:57Speaker 1: This is the story of how even careful killers get caught.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Let's take a look. Before we jump into our case,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I want to tell you about today's sponsor, June's Journey.
- 1:20Speaker 1: June's Journey is a hidden object mystery game that is
- 1:23Speaker 1: set in the glamorous 1920s. Players navigate this immersive world

- 2:41Speaker 1: June's Journey is available on Apple and Android smartphones and
- 2:44Speaker 1: tablets as well as PC. Lena Andrews arrived at the
- 2:50Speaker 1: Vero Beach police station at just after 8 a.m. on
- 2:53Speaker 1: June 21, 2014. She was there to report her daughter,
- 2:58Speaker 1: 26-year-old Diana Duvet, missing. The last communication she had with
- 3:03Speaker 1: Diana was a text message sent just past 1.30 a.m.
- 3:06Speaker 1: the previous day, stating that she would not be returning
- 3:09Speaker 1: home that night. That message was sent in her native Russian,
- 3:13Speaker 1: the language Diana used to communicate with her mother. Every
- 3:17Speaker 1: message Lena sent following that, asking where she was and
- 3:21Speaker 1: when she would be home, went unanswered. Eventually, Lena made
- 3:26Speaker 1: contact with Diana's boyfriend, 31-year-old Mike Jones. Mike told Lena
- 3:32Speaker 1: that Diana was sleeping at his house. He would have
- 3:35Speaker 1: her call later. But no call was ever made. Even
- 3:40Speaker 1: more troubling, following this exchange with Lena, Mike Jones also
- 3:44Speaker 1: dropped out of contact. Beginning that Saturday, June 22nd, no
- 3:50Speaker 1: one could reach the young couple. And neither Diana, a
- 3:54Speaker 1: dedicated nurse, or Mike, a successful wealth planner, had shown
- 3:58Speaker 1: up for work on Friday. 31-year-old Mike Jones had earned
- 4:07Speaker 1: a master's in law degree from the University of Miami.
- 4:11Speaker 1: After launching his career at the investment bank Merrill Lynch,
- 4:14Speaker 1: based in Fort Lauderdale, he had accepted a role at
- 4:17Speaker 1: PNC Wealth Management in Vero Beach. Mike oversaw millions of
- 4:23Speaker 1: client funds, and by most accounts, he was respected and
- 4:26Speaker 1: well-liked by colleagues and clients alike. A regular on the
- 4:31Speaker 1: local bar scene, it was at one of these establishments
- 4:34Speaker 1: that Mike had met Diana roughly six months earlier. By
- 4:39Speaker 1: the spring of 2014, They were living together in Mike's
- 4:43Speaker 1: residence at 1620 42 Square. According to friends, Diana was
- 4:49Speaker 1: never as smitten with Mike as he was with her.
- 4:52Speaker 1: The 26-year-old has always been popular and made friends easily.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It had taken some effort from Mike to win her over.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Born in Moldova, Diana had moved to Florida with her
- 5:06Speaker 1: mother at the age of 13 when Lena married stepfather
- 5:10Speaker 1: Bill Andrews. Arriving as a young teen without a word
- 5:14Speaker 1: of English, she had learned rapidly and fit in just
- 5:17Speaker 1: as quickly. Diana graduated college with a nursing degree with
- 5:21Speaker 1: a specialization in oncology. She worked with cancer patients at
- 5:25Speaker 1: a local medical clinic, a role in which she was
- 5:28Speaker 1: deeply committed. That Friday, however, she did not show up
- 5:33Speaker 1: for work, and no one at the clinic had heard
- 5:36Speaker 1: from her. A search warrant was drawn up for Mike
- 5:42Speaker 1: Jones' house in Vero Beach. It was the last known
- 5:45Speaker 1: location for both Mike and Diana. When they entered, they
- 5:49Speaker 1: found no one at home. It also seems that not
- 5:52Speaker 1: much appeared out of place. Neither Diana's black Nissan nor
- 5:56Speaker 1: Mike's gold Mazda was at the residence, though a neighbor
- 6:00Speaker 1: told police they were called seeing Diana's vehicle parked out
- 6:04Speaker 1: front on Friday night. In the garage on the floor
- 6:08Speaker 1: near the base of the door, Investigators identified droplets of
- 6:12Speaker 1: a blood-like substance. The need to locate the couple intensified.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Notifications to law enforcement agencies across the state were made
- 6:21Speaker 1: in an effort to find Mike and Diana's vehicles and
- 6:24Speaker 1: hopefully lead to their location. Meanwhile, detectives began to retrace
- 6:29Speaker 1: their movements prior to those early morning texts on the 21st.
- 6:36Speaker 1: On the evening of Wednesday, June 18th, two days before
- 6:39Speaker 1: the disappearance, Diana and Mike went to the Scampi Grill
- 6:43Speaker 1: for dinner. Michael Major had been their server. Michael recognized
- 6:47Speaker 1: the couple as soon as they came in. He and
- 6:50Speaker 1: a co-worker had been out for drinks just a few
- 6:52Speaker 1: days before at a bar called The Grove, where they
- 6:55Speaker 1: had encountered Mike and Diana.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I went up to the table to introduce myself. They
- 7:02Speaker 2: seemed a little on edge.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Did you know them at that time? No, we had
- 7:06Speaker 3: seen them.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Actually, one of the employees here kevin and i had
- 7:13Speaker 2: encountered him uh friday night say him who are.
- 7:16Speaker 4: You talking about uh michael okay you're talking about michael jones.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yes sir um we were at the grove having a
- 7:23Speaker 2: couple beverages after work and uh kevin made contact with
- 7:29Speaker 2: the girlfriend at the time and just a casual conversation
- 7:32Speaker 2: and he came up with attitude and stuff and We
- 7:34Speaker 2: were already a few drinks into the night.
- 7:36Speaker 3: We're like, you know, this is garbage.
- 7:37Speaker 5: We're on a long day.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Let's just leave it at that and go home.
- 7:41Speaker 6: So we did.
- 7:41Speaker 2: We left it at that and went home. So when
- 7:43Speaker 2: they came in Wednesday night, Kevin was working with me.
- 7:46Speaker 2: He goes, that guy look familiar to you?
- 7:48Speaker 6: I'm like, yeah, he does.
- 7:49Speaker 2: He goes, that's the guy from the Grove that tried
- 7:51Speaker 2: to get into it with me.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Michael told the detective that a short exchange Kevin had
- 7:56Speaker 1: with Diana at the Grove caused a jealous reaction from Mike,
- 8:00Speaker 1: who unnecessarily confronted them in a threatening manner. The servers
- 8:04Speaker 1: de-escalated the exchange and left, only to see the couple
- 8:08Speaker 1: show up at the scampi grill days later. Their demeanor
- 8:11Speaker 1: was tense. Michael noted how they seemed to maintain a
- 8:15Speaker 1: heated exchange throughout their dinner, though keeping their voices low
- 8:18Speaker 1: enough to conceal their words.
- 8:20Speaker 3: You could visibly see that something was going on with her.
- 8:23Speaker 3: The demeanor didn't change at all.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And I looked through service window at the table every
- 8:28Speaker 2: so often just to check on them. and you could
- 8:31Speaker 2: see that there was agitation between the two of them.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I was talking to Kevin about it, too. I'm like, dude,
- 8:36Speaker 2: that is not a happy table. I'm like, there's a
- 8:37Speaker 2: lot of agitation going on. And he noticed it, too.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Would you say that he's aggressive with her? Oh, the
- 8:43Speaker 3: way he was talking to her?
- 8:44Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 8:44Speaker 3: His body motion was absolutely aggressive.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Mike and Diana left Scampi Grill at around 8.30 that evening.
- 8:54Speaker 1: An hour later, Mike was back at the Grove. He
- 8:57Speaker 1: was alone. A friend who saw him there later told
- 9:00Speaker 1: detectives that Mike was visibly upset and had been crying profusely.
- 9:07Speaker 7: By all accounts, Diana and Mike.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Had ended their relationship over dinner at Scampi's Grill on
- 9:13Speaker 6: Wednesday night.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Mike complained to co-workers the following day that Diana had
- 9:38Speaker 1: left without removing all of her clothing from his apartment.
- 9:41Speaker 1: He also told them that he had plans to visit
- 9:43Speaker 1: friends in Orlando, which served as an explanation for his absence,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but he did not leave right away. Despite their apparent breakup,
- 9:53Speaker 1: he and Diana were spotted out together once more the
- 9:56Speaker 1: very next night. A bartender at What a reported that
- 10:01Speaker 1: after having a drink, Mike paid their tab by credit
- 10:04Speaker 1: card and the two left, together, at just after 1am.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It was the last sighting of Diana before she lost
- 10:12Speaker 1: contact with everyone, and she was getting into her car
- 10:16Speaker 1: with her now ex-boyfriend. This was not the first time
- 10:21Speaker 1: that the two had parted ways. Diana's best friend and
- 10:25Speaker 1: sometimes roommate, Chelsea, told detectives that their first split had
- 10:29Speaker 1: taken place back in April. During a heated argument at
- 10:32Speaker 1: their home, Mike's yelling and threats caused a neighbor in
- 10:36Speaker 1: the building to place a call to 911 concerned for
- 10:40Speaker 1: Diana's safety.
- 10:42Speaker 8: She called me hysterically crying. She asked me where I
- 10:45Speaker 8: was and I said I was working. I'm still, you know,
- 10:47Speaker 8: at the bar closing up. She's like, okay, well, I'm
- 10:48Speaker 8: coming up there.
- 10:49Speaker 9: She came up hysterical, talking about how they were in
- 10:52Speaker 9: a fight, and at one point.
- 10:54Speaker 8: During the fight, he ended up choking her.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Chelsea said she could clearly see the signs of the
- 10:59Speaker 1: attack on her friend's neck. They had documented the incident
- 11:03Speaker 1: with photos. The next day, accompanied by Chelsea's father, they
- 11:07Speaker 1: went to Mike's apartment and collected her things. She moved out,
- 11:11Speaker 1: and that was meant to be the end of it.
- 11:14Speaker 8: They went through a period of time of not really.
- 11:19Speaker 9: Though Mike's temper on that night back in April had
- 11:21Speaker 9: come as a surprise to many of Diana's friends.
- 11:23Speaker 3: It seems it was not out of character.
- 11:24Speaker 6: Mike was described as a.
- 11:27Speaker 8: Controlling and jealous partner, and a man with.
- 11:29Speaker 10: A bad temper.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Diana's friend Kyle told detectives that he tried to warn
- 11:49Speaker 1: her off of Mike, sensing that he was not a
- 11:52Speaker 1: good person. On one occasion, they ran into each other
- 11:55Speaker 1: at a bar and greeted each other with a hug.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Spotting the exchange, Mike wasted no time confronting Kyle in
- 12:03Speaker 1: what he described as a jealous rage. It was behavior
- 12:06Speaker 1: reminiscent of what Michael and Kevin had experienced only days
- 12:10Speaker 1: before the disappearance.
- 12:13Speaker 3: And he pursued again.
- 12:15Speaker 11: With aggression, more aggression to try to fight you. What
- 12:19Speaker 11: did he exactly say to you, Kyle? Didn't really say nothing.
- 12:23Speaker 11: Just stared at me and started walking towards me with anger.
- 12:27Speaker 11: Did he have his fists clenched?
- 12:28Speaker 3: Yes, fists were clenched. He was ready to fight. Out
- 12:33Speaker 3: of rage and jealousy.
- 12:34Speaker 10: Not much.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I believe, you know, it was a while back, but
- 12:38Speaker 3: I believe he said, get that fuck off her. And
- 12:42Speaker 3: it was a simple hug as a friend. Would you
- 12:45Speaker 3: say he's got some jealousy issues?
- 12:47Speaker 10: Yes.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Further digging into Mike Jones' past revealed a criminal history,
- 12:53Speaker 1: a conviction in Fort Lauderdale for aggravated stalking of an ex-girlfriend,
- 12:59Speaker 1: a felony. On Sunday, June 22nd, only days after Diana's
- 13:06Speaker 1: last confirmed communication, Mike Jones' gold Mazda was spotted in
- 13:11Speaker 1: the parking lot of a Hampton Inn on Reynolds Drive,
- 13:14Speaker 1: in Fort Pierce. Despite his apparent plans to visit friends
- 13:18Speaker 1: in Orlando, surveillance footage captured him checking into a room
- 13:22Speaker 1: only 25 minutes away from his home in Vero Beach.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He paid cash and gave explicit instructions to hotel staff,
- 13:30Speaker 1: do not put through any phone calls and do not
- 13:33Speaker 1: tell anyone that he was there. Detectives were nonetheless handed
- 13:38Speaker 1: a key card to his room and they paid him
- 13:41Speaker 1: a visit.
- 13:42Speaker 8: You have a pretty good reason why we're here, I'm sure.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Basically, you know the reason why we're here. We're still
- 13:48Speaker 3: trying to find out.
- 13:49Speaker 10: Okay?
- 13:51Speaker 3: That's the biggest reason why we've been doing the last
- 13:52Speaker 3: couple days. That's what we're going to continue to do.
- 13:56Speaker 10: Okay?
- 13:57Speaker 4: I'd like to talk to you about our whereabouts.
- 14:00Speaker 10: Okay?
- 14:01Speaker 4: But I have to read you Miranda warning first, okay?
- 14:05Speaker 3: You understand that so far? I know you got a
- 14:07Speaker 3: little of your law degree, so you're really intelligent.
- 14:10Speaker 9: Remember again why we're here, and that's to find out.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Following this brief statement, Mike asserted his right to counsel,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and the conversation ended. Less than 12 hours after Mike's
- 14:31Speaker 1: Mazda was spotted in Fort Pierce, Diana's black Nissan was
- 14:36Speaker 1: located in a Publix parking lot in Melbourne, a nearly
- 14:39Speaker 1: hour drive from her home in Vero Beach. Officers opened
- 14:43Speaker 1: the trunk of the car to find Diana Duvet, dressed
- 14:47Speaker 1: in only her underwear. She had likely been deceased for days.
- 14:53Speaker 1: An autopsy would later determine that Diana had suffered blunt
- 14:56Speaker 1: force trauma to her head. She had also been strangled.
- 15:01Speaker 1: It was a devastating outcome to the missing person search
- 15:04Speaker 1: that family and friends had desperately hoped would result in
- 15:07Speaker 1: locating Diana alive.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Anybody that got a chance to meet Diana knows that
- 15:13Speaker 5: she just brought a smile to their face and was
- 15:16Speaker 5: a bright spot in their life. You get to know
- 15:18Speaker 5: who people are, and she's one of those people that
- 15:22Speaker 5: you won't find anybody that has anything bad to say
- 15:24Speaker 5: about her. You could see from the outreach from the
- 15:26Speaker 5: community that just speaks volumes of who she was. It's
- 15:30Speaker 5: a devastating loss.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Detectives spoke with a Publix employee who had arrived for
- 15:35Speaker 1: her shift just before 5 a.m. on Saturday morning. The
- 15:39Speaker 1: employee recalled watching as the black Nissan drove in and parked.
- 15:44Speaker 1: She did not, however, get a clear view of the driver.
- 15:46Speaker 8: Did you see who was driving the black vehicle?
- 15:49Speaker 10: No.
- 16:05Speaker 1: The employee thought that perhaps a second vehicle, which entered
- 16:09Speaker 1: the lot only moments later, could have been traveling with
- 16:12Speaker 1: the black Nissan. If so, it would suggest the killer
- 16:16Speaker 1: had an accomplice, though the witness did not see an
- 16:19Speaker 1: interaction between the drivers. So, investigators began to contact local
- 16:24Speaker 1: taxi services. They reasoned that the driver who abandoned Diana's
- 16:28Speaker 1: car needed to leave the parking lot somehow. This logical
- 16:32Speaker 1: deduction proved accurate. A Black Diamond taxi reported collecting a
- 16:37Speaker 1: fare a quarter mile from the Publix from the local
- 16:40Speaker 1: Wendy's restaurant at roughly 8.30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The
- 16:44Speaker 1: destination was Vero Beach. The driver told detectives that he
- 16:49Speaker 1: collected a thin-built white man in a red hoodie from
- 16:52Speaker 1: the bus stop. He remembered it clearly because it was
- 16:56Speaker 1: the only fare he had that day, and it was
- 16:58Speaker 1: unusual to collect someone from the side of the road
- 17:01Speaker 1: for a long journey. They made small talk on the way.
- 17:05Speaker 9: How did you get down here? And he said, well,
- 17:10Speaker 9: he came down with a friend of his. And he
- 17:14Speaker 9: said her car broke down.
- 17:18Speaker 10: Okay.
- 17:19Speaker 9: And he had no way to get back. So she
- 17:23Speaker 9: couldn't get her car fixed. And he said, oh, I
- 17:26Speaker 9: don't know. She was pretty pissed anyway, so I doubt
- 17:29Speaker 9: she would have gave me a ride back.
- 17:32Speaker 1: The taxi driver dropped off the man in the hoodie
- 17:34Speaker 1: at an address in Vero Beach directly across the street
- 17:38Speaker 1: from the apartment at 1620 42 Square. When asked to
- 17:42Speaker 1: identify the man in a police lineup, the driver identified
- 17:46Speaker 1: Michael Jones. On Wednesday, June 25th, one week from the
- 17:55Speaker 1: day Diana broke up with him, Michael Jones was formally
- 17:58Speaker 1: charged with first-degree murder. He was held in custody without bond.
- 18:03Speaker 12: This is a tragic case of dating and domestic violence
- 18:07Speaker 12: by a weak, insecure, cowardly individual who felt the need
- 18:11Speaker 12: to control his relationship with Diana Duvet by way of
- 18:15Speaker 12: verbal and physical abuse. Quite frankly, Michael David Jones disgusts
- 18:20Speaker 12: me and is a very poor excuse for a man.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Upon his arrest, officers located a second burner phone amongst
- 18:28Speaker 1: his things. the same phone that had been used to
- 18:31Speaker 1: call the taxi cab company for a ride from the
- 18:33Speaker 1: Melbourne Wendy's. Had he used this phone exclusively, instead of
- 18:38Speaker 1: occasionally powering on his regular device, detectives may have been
- 18:41Speaker 1: unable to track him. As it was, they could trace
- 18:45Speaker 1: the purchase of the burner phone to a Walmart in
- 18:47Speaker 1: Palm Bay. At approximately 6.52 a.m. on Saturday the 21st,
- 18:53Speaker 1: a black four-door Nissan was captured arriving at the store.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Cameras in the parking lot and inside showed only Mike
- 19:01Speaker 1: Jones emerging from the vehicle and entering the store. He
- 19:04Speaker 1: purchased the flip phone and was captured leaving. Though he
- 19:08Speaker 1: drove Diana's car, she was not seen with him. Of course,
- 19:12Speaker 1: if the timeline established by detectives was correct, Diana was
- 19:17Speaker 1: already in the trunk when Mike drove her car to
- 19:20Speaker 1: the Walmart that morning. Michael Jones pleaded not guilty to
- 19:28Speaker 1: the murder and awaited his trial from county jail. He
- 19:32Speaker 1: refused to speak with detectives.
- 19:36Speaker 4: I want to point out to you, the first time
- 19:37Speaker 4: we talked to you, we were there to talk to
- 19:39Speaker 4: you about a missing person, okay? Now we're here to
- 19:42Speaker 4: talk to you about the murder, okay? That being said,
- 19:46Speaker 4: I'm going to go ahead and read you Miranda rights.
- 19:48Speaker 10: You understand?
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 10: Okay. Using my right to silence and unequivocally requesting my
- 19:55Speaker 10: right to counsel. So you don't want to talk to us?
- 19:58Speaker 10: I request my right to counsel. Okay. That's all you
- 20:04Speaker 10: have to say to us.
- 20:07Speaker 1: During this period, investigators were learning more about the wealth
- 20:10Speaker 1: planner's sordid past. Ex-girlfriends reported controlling behavior and a pattern
- 20:16Speaker 1: of emotional and physical abuse. It also emerged that Mike
- 20:20Speaker 1: had a history of telling grandiose, overt lies. Though he
- 20:25Speaker 1: drove a 10-year-old Mazda, he claimed this was only to
- 20:28Speaker 1: keep his other car, a Porsche, from becoming damaged. He
- 20:32Speaker 1: also spoke about the penthouse he claimed to own in
- 20:35Speaker 1: Fort Lauderdale. While in law school, he told professors and
- 20:40Speaker 1: some fellow students that he was battling cancer, which made
- 20:43Speaker 1: it difficult for him to regularly attend classes and meet
- 20:47Speaker 1: project deadlines. And apparently, he was also a self-made man.
- 20:53Speaker 1: He claimed to have been adopted and raised in poverty.
- 20:56Speaker 1: These lies helped him get admitted to academic programs and
- 21:00Speaker 1: boost his reputation with colleagues. But His tales were a
- 21:05Speaker 1: stark contrast to the wealthy upbringing and private school education
- 21:10Speaker 1: that his biological parents had actually provided him. After his arrest,
- 21:16Speaker 1: his many connections abandoned him. His lies had been revealed.
- 21:21Speaker 1: While awaiting trial, Mike was supported by a single co-worker
- 21:25Speaker 1: who visited him only a few times.
- 21:29Speaker 10: Can I ask you an honest question? Sure. Other than
- 21:33Speaker 10: you and her?
- 21:34Speaker 13: Uh-huh.
- 21:36Speaker 10: Do you think I really have any friends left?
- 21:40Speaker 13: Don't consider that they're not your friends. They're just not
- 21:43Speaker 13: in a good place, you know? And I hope they
- 21:47Speaker 13: still are your friends, you know?
- 21:49Speaker 6: Okay?
- 21:51Speaker 13: Have you seen your family at all, Michael?
- 21:54Speaker 10: No. You're the only person that has visited me, and
- 21:58Speaker 10: literally I got one letter from Guy and one letter
- 22:00Speaker 10: from you, and that's it.
- 22:02Speaker 13: Do you want me to contact your family?
- 22:05Speaker 10: No, my attorney talked to them.
- 22:07Speaker 13: The police detective has said to me that they've tried
- 22:11Speaker 13: to talk with you and that you won't talk with them.
- 22:16Speaker 13: And I guess I'm... I don't care for my... It's
- 22:22Speaker 13: not what I want to know why you won't talk
- 22:24Speaker 13: to them. I want the best for you, Michael. And
- 22:29Speaker 13: I'm just wondering... why you think it's beneficial to you
- 22:35Speaker 13: not to talk to them.
- 22:38Speaker 10: Yeah, that's something I can't talk about.
- 22:41Speaker 13: You know, Michael, they don't tell us details and stuff,
- 22:45Speaker 13: and this is upset for you, I'm sure, but they
- 22:49Speaker 13: tell us that they have lots of evidence. If you
- 22:53Speaker 13: don't weigh in at all, that your voice is not
- 22:58Speaker 13: going to be heard, Michael, and the next thing you
- 23:01Speaker 13: know will be in the middle of some big sensational trial.
- 23:05Speaker 13: I just don't want to see you, I just don't
- 23:09Speaker 13: want to see you publicized or damaged further than you
- 23:12Speaker 13: need to be.
- 23:13Speaker 10: Yeah. I don't know that I have much choice in
- 23:18Speaker 10: that matter, though. Well, I think that in the next
- 23:23Speaker 10: few days, um, I think they're going to decide whether
- 23:29Speaker 10: they go with the death penalty or not.
- 23:34Speaker 13: I don't know what the facts are, but you can't
- 23:37Speaker 13: change the facts, Michael. And if the facts aren't good,
- 23:42Speaker 13: you need to find a place to... You don't want
- 23:48Speaker 13: to die, do you?
- 23:48Speaker 10: No, that's a pretty scary thing.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Michael Jones stood trial for Diana Duvet's murder in October 2019.
- 24:01Speaker 1: The state declared their intention to seek the death penalty
- 24:06Speaker 1: should the jury return a guilty verdict. The defense argued
- 24:09Speaker 1: that the evidence for murder was circumstantial. They suggested that
- 24:13Speaker 1: Diana could have sustained her fatal injuries accidentally. If that
- 24:18Speaker 1: was the case, Mike was only guilty of panicking by
- 24:21Speaker 1: placing her in the trunk of her car, abandoning it
- 24:23Speaker 1: in a parking lot, and hiding at a Hampton Inn.
- 24:27Speaker 1: A medical expert for the defense testified that the blunt
- 24:30Speaker 1: force injury to her head alone could have killed her,
- 24:33Speaker 1: or Diana could have still been alive when she was
- 24:37Speaker 1: placed in the trunk. Under intense cross-examination, however, even this
- 24:42Speaker 1: expert conceded that her death was best categorized as a homicide.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Michael Jones elected not to testify at his trial. Whatever
- 24:53Speaker 1: his version of events, it would not be heard. It
- 24:57Speaker 1: took the jury only 45 minutes to convict him of
- 25:01Speaker 1: first-degree murder. The same jurors would return the next month
- 25:05Speaker 1: for the sentencing phase of the trial, when they would
- 25:07Speaker 1: decide if he should be put to death.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Michael David Jones can never be let back out into
- 25:14Speaker 6: the public. You know, he's a murderer. He stole the
- 25:17Speaker 6: life of my daughter. And, you know, I don't want
- 25:22Speaker 6: him to even stay the rest of his life in jail.
- 25:26Speaker 6: I want murder one sentence down.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Lena Andrews spoke extensively during the penalty phase. Diana had
- 25:35Speaker 1: been her only child. The two had been extremely close.
- 25:39Speaker 1: She spoke of the plans that her daughter had made
- 25:41Speaker 1: for her own life and how thoughts of that lost
- 25:44Speaker 1: future would haunt her forever. Despite these heartbreaking pleas, when
- 25:49Speaker 1: the jury returned, there was one holdout. The vote was
- 25:54Speaker 1: 11-1 in favor of imposing a sentence of death.
- 25:58Speaker 8: Did the jury unanimously find that the defendant, Michael Jones,
- 26:02Speaker 8: should be sentenced to death?
- 26:04Speaker 6: No.
- 26:06Speaker 1: A recent change in Florida law meant that for the
- 26:09Speaker 1: sentence to be imposed, the decision needed to be unanimous.
- 26:15Speaker 7: You came to my home, you sit at my table,
- 26:19Speaker 7: and you took my daughter with you. There is no punishment,
- 26:24Speaker 7: no harsh enough for what you took from me. You know,
- 26:27Speaker 7: if he could kill, he would be dead by now
- 26:30Speaker 7: for what you took.
- 26:33Speaker 1: From him. In November 2019, Michael David Jones was sentenced
- 26:37Speaker 1: to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
- 26:43Speaker 3: It's all gone for me.
- 26:46Speaker 8: I'm never going to have grandchildren. I'm never going to
- 26:49Speaker 8: see my dog and forgive him all. wise, you know,
- 26:56Speaker 8: get married, be happy. I know she's gone, but it's
- 27:03Speaker 8: so hard to believe it now.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And that was the case of Diana Duvet. Thanks for watching,
