- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest
- 0:06Speaker 1: thou the Son of Man with a kiss? Luke 22.48
- 0:12Speaker 1: As I march toward the place of my purpose and destiny,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and as the pressure of the task before me begins
- 0:21Speaker 1: to weigh on my heart, I thank you that you
- 0:24Speaker 1: will place people around me who will pray and who
- 0:28Speaker 1: will intercede on my behalf. so that I may have
- 0:32Speaker 1: the strength to finish strong. Increase my faith so that
- 0:38Speaker 1: I will be able to operate in the fullness of
- 0:41Speaker 1: who I am. Even when I experience betrayal from friends
- 0:46Speaker 1: like Judas, I will remain calm, because even though it
- 0:50Speaker 1: may surprise me, I know it doesn't surprise you, Lord.
- 0:55Speaker 1: When I'm tempted to lash out and fight back like Peter,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Restrain me, Holy Spirit, and remind me that your spoken
- 1:04Speaker 1: word over my life will be fulfilled, no matter who
- 1:09Speaker 1: turns their back on me. No amount of betrayal will
- 1:13Speaker 1: ever be able to derail my destiny, because through my
- 1:18Speaker 1: obedience I am protected and covered. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with me today. Continue listening for
- 1:33Speaker 1: an incredible Bible story. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The Word will be fulfilled. In our last story, we
- 1:49Speaker 2: learned about the plot to kill Jesus being set into
- 1:52Speaker 2: motion by Judas. Jesus, during the Last Supper, identified his
- 1:57Speaker 2: betrayer as Judas. He washed his disciples' feet, telling them
- 2:01Speaker 2: to serve one another as he had served them, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: gave them a new command to remember him when they
- 2:07Speaker 2: eat together and take communion until he returns. In this story,
- 2:13Speaker 2: we will learn about the agonizing heart of Jesus, his
- 2:16Speaker 2: resolve to save us, and his desire to have his
- 2:19Speaker 2: disciples near him in the last hour. We also see
- 2:23Speaker 2: Judas again, coming with a small army to arrest Jesus.
- 2:27Speaker 2: as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:32Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:34Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:37Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:41Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:43Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:47Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:49Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:52Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book in
- 2:54Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus. and how his living word,
- 2:58Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:02Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 3:05Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:12Speaker 3: you for your support. In our last time together, we
- 3:16Speaker 3: heard of the Passover meal in which Jesus washed his disciples' feet,
- 3:20Speaker 3: giving them and us a model of servanthood. He also
- 3:24Speaker 3: identified his betrayer, Judas Iscariot, who, filled with Satan, departed
- 3:29Speaker 3: from the group to do this terrible thing of giving
- 3:33Speaker 3: Jesus up for sacrifice. Finally, we heard how Jesus gave
- 3:37Speaker 3: new meaning to the elements of the Passover meal. This
- 3:41Speaker 3: Passover meal transitions to the Last Supper and the Lord's
- 3:45Speaker 3: Supper that we practice today as Christians, because the blood
- 3:49Speaker 3: of Jesus Christ is represented in the fruit of the
- 3:53Speaker 3: vine in the cup. and the bread represents the body
- 3:56Speaker 3: of the Lord which was given and is given for us.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Today we'll find Jesus filled with sorrow going to the
- 4:02Speaker 3: Father in prayer because he knows his time is nearing,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and then he submits his will to do the will
- 4:09Speaker 3: of God. While he desires to be spared from the
- 4:12Speaker 3: great suffering of taking the sin of the world upon himself,
- 4:16Speaker 3: he prays not my will, but your will be done.
- 4:20Speaker 3: The cross of Christ looms large as we begin today's reading.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So let's listen reverently to the Word of God.
- 4:30Speaker 2: In the cool of the night, Jesus could hear the
- 4:33Speaker 2: faint sound of the festival happening in the distance. Quietness
- 4:37Speaker 2: settled in as the disciples walked further away from the
- 4:40Speaker 2: city up to the Mount of Olives. Among the trees,
- 4:44Speaker 2: with his disciples trailing shortly behind him, Jesus spoke, You
- 4:49Speaker 2: will all run away because of me tonight, for it
- 4:52Speaker 2: is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
- 4:56Speaker 2: of the flock will be scattered. Peter, with the same
- 4:59Speaker 2: brash and bold tone he often used, said, They may
- 5:03Speaker 2: all fall away, Lord, but I will not. I would
- 5:06Speaker 2: die for you. O Peter, if only you knew what
- 5:11Speaker 2: was going to happen, Jesus must have thought. He answered
- 5:15Speaker 2: Peter and said, Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you
- 5:19Speaker 2: would have already denied knowing me three times. Peter and
- 5:24Speaker 2: the others continued to affirm to Jesus that they would
- 5:27Speaker 2: never do such a thing. Yet Jesus would go through
- 5:31Speaker 2: what was about to happen alone. He would gladly do
- 5:35Speaker 2: it too, for the joy set before him, he would
- 5:38Speaker 2: endure it all for their sake and for the sake
- 5:41Speaker 2: of the world. Jesus led them to a garden called Gethsemane.
- 5:47Speaker 2: There Jesus would anguish over what was about to happen.
- 5:50Speaker 2: He told his disciples to wait for him while he
- 5:53Speaker 2: prayed Then he took Peter, James, and John to go
- 5:56Speaker 2: further with him. My soul is filled with sorrow even
- 6:00Speaker 2: to death. Remain here with me and keep watch. Jesus
- 6:05Speaker 2: walked ahead a little further and fell to his knees
- 6:07Speaker 2: before God. No one could truly know the depth of Jesus'
- 6:11Speaker 2: dialogue with God that night. The Father and the Son
- 6:15Speaker 2: spoke to each other with a bond that had preceded
- 6:18Speaker 2: time itself. Jesus knew that he was going to be taken.
- 6:22Speaker 2: and he would be offered up as a sacrifice for
- 6:24Speaker 2: the redemption of mankind. Gazing into heaven, Jesus knelt before
- 6:30Speaker 2: his God and asked, Father, if you are willing, take
- 6:33Speaker 2: this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours,
- 6:38Speaker 2: be done. It was not just the cross Jesus was
- 6:41Speaker 2: speaking of, but also the cup of wrath he would
- 6:44Speaker 2: endure so the world wouldn't have to. This led Jesus
- 6:48Speaker 2: to sweat blood. In anguish he prayed, Yet God sent
- 6:52Speaker 2: him comfort in the form of an angel. The cup
- 6:56Speaker 2: would not be taken away. Jesus returned afterwards to find
- 7:00Speaker 2: his disciples sleeping. Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray
- 7:06Speaker 2: that you may not enter into temptation. For Jesus knew
- 7:10Speaker 2: that the events about to unfold would require them to
- 7:13Speaker 2: have faith. Jesus and the disciples heard sounds of several
- 7:17Speaker 2: men in the distance carrying weapons, torches, and armors. Jesus
- 7:22Speaker 2: did not wait for them to come to him. Instead,
- 7:25Speaker 2: he crossed the brook and walked towards them. There he
- 7:28Speaker 2: met Judas. Judas ran to Jesus and embraced him. Greetings, Rabbi,
- 7:34Speaker 2: Judas said. Then he kissed him. Jesus saw Judas as
- 7:38Speaker 2: he truly was and said, Judas, would you betray the
- 7:43Speaker 2: Son of Man with a kiss? After this, the armed
- 7:47Speaker 2: men surrounded Jesus with swords drawn and torches blazing. Looking
- 7:51Speaker 2: at their faces illuminated by the flames, Jesus asked, Whom
- 7:55Speaker 2: do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth, they responded, quite sure
- 8:00Speaker 2: of who they were speaking to. Jesus, the maker of
- 8:04Speaker 2: heaven and earth and the conquering Lion of Judah, stood
- 8:07Speaker 2: before his pursuers. He spoke with the voice of God, saying,
- 8:12Speaker 2: I am he. And in that instant the dozens of
- 8:16Speaker 2: armed soldiers fell onto their backs, whiplashed by the power
- 8:20Speaker 2: of Christ himself. Again, facing the soldiers, Jesus asked, Whom
- 8:26Speaker 2: do you seek? Regaining their footing, now less sure of
- 8:31Speaker 2: who they were speaking to, answered again, saying, Jesus of Nazareth,
- 8:36Speaker 2: the Lord told them, I have told you that I
- 8:39Speaker 2: was the one you were looking for, so let these
- 8:42Speaker 2: other men go. Therefore Jesus' words, saying, I have not
- 8:47Speaker 2: lost any of the men you gave me was fulfilled.
- 8:51Speaker 2: The disciples, amazed, confused, and afraid, asked if they should
- 8:55Speaker 2: come to Jesus' defense. Peter, without asking, sprang into action.
- 9:00Speaker 2: He drew his sword and ran towards the men with
- 9:02Speaker 2: righteous anger in his voice. Aiming for the head of
- 9:05Speaker 2: a servant nearby, he cut off his ear, sending him
- 9:08Speaker 2: screaming onto the floor. With blood spewing from the servant's ear,
- 9:12Speaker 2: Jesus raised his voice yet again. Put your sword back
- 9:16Speaker 2: into its place, Peter, for those who live by the
- 9:19Speaker 2: sword will die by the sword. Again, he looked at
- 9:23Speaker 2: Peter with intensity and honesty. Do you think that I
- 9:28Speaker 2: cannot ask my father to send more than twelve legions
- 9:31Speaker 2: of angels to save me? But how then will I
- 9:34Speaker 2: fulfill the scriptures? Jesus then looked at the armed men
- 9:38Speaker 2: and the priests behind them. Do you come to me
- 9:41Speaker 2: with swords and clubs like you would a criminal? Jesus
- 9:49Speaker 2: knew why. They knew what they were doing was an
- 9:53Speaker 2: act to happen in the shadows. Jesus then knelt down
- 9:57Speaker 2: to the servant writhing on the floor. His name was Jesus.
- 10:00Speaker 2: was Malchus. Jesus touched Malchus and healed him before everyone.
- 10:06Speaker 2: The men then took Jesus and arrested him. The disciples,
- 10:10Speaker 2: unsure what to do and afraid, ran in different directions. Outwardly,
- 10:15Speaker 2: it would have seemed as if Jesus was being taken
- 10:17Speaker 2: forcibly to the temple. Yet Jesus went willingly, with intent
- 10:22Speaker 2: and love for all mankind. He began the process of
- 10:25Speaker 2: offering up his own life. Bound and tied, yet not trapped,
- 10:30Speaker 2: Jesus was brought to the temple of the high priest Caiaphas,
- 10:34Speaker 2: where hundreds of people had gathered to accuse him.
- 10:43Speaker 3: We open today's reading with Jesus and Peter in conversation.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Jesus knew that what was to come would strike fear
- 10:50Speaker 3: into his followers and they would run in fear and terror. Peter,
- 10:55Speaker 3: strong-willed and hard-headed as ever, insisted that though others may leave,
- 10:59Speaker 3: that he would never abandon Jesus. You can count on me, Jesus,
- 11:04Speaker 3: said Peter. Jesus told Peter that before the next morning,
- 11:08Speaker 3: he would deny him not once but three times. Peter
- 11:12Speaker 3: and the others insisted that they would never leave, but
- 11:15Speaker 3: Jesus knew what was coming. It would be a lonely
- 11:18Speaker 3: night of pain and suffering. Then Jesus took the disciples
- 11:23Speaker 3: to a garden, the Garden of Gethsemane, to pray. He
- 11:27Speaker 3: told them to stay and wait for him. Then he
- 11:30Speaker 3: took three of his closest disciples a little ways away.
- 11:34Speaker 3: With Peter, James, and John within earshot, Jesus began to
- 11:38Speaker 3: pour out his heart to God. This was going to
- 11:41Speaker 3: be excruciating. So if there was any other way, Jesus
- 11:46Speaker 3: asked the Father to release him and somehow take away
- 11:49Speaker 3: the cup of suffering. And yet, in the midst of that,
- 11:54Speaker 3: Christ committed himself to do the will of the Father.
- 11:58Speaker 3: And when he asked for the cup to be taken
- 12:00Speaker 3: away from him, that cup which represents the dregs of
- 12:04Speaker 3: sin of all the world, What was in that cup
- 12:06Speaker 3: was the sin of every person who ever lived. This
- 12:09Speaker 3: is why Jesus turned away from drinking the cup. And
- 12:12Speaker 3: yet he said, not my will, Father, but your will
- 12:16Speaker 3: be done. This surrender would prepare him for the sacrifice
- 12:20Speaker 3: that he would give for the whole world to all
- 12:23Speaker 3: who would believe in him. It's impossible for us to
- 12:27Speaker 3: imagine the depth of pain that Jesus would be feeling,
- 12:30Speaker 3: experiencing that night. He was about to endure death, but
- 12:34Speaker 3: not just physical death. He was to experience spiritual death
- 12:38Speaker 3: when he would die on the cross, the sin bearer,
- 12:41Speaker 3: and giving up his life and experiencing the wrath of
- 12:45Speaker 3: a holy God. His anguish was so deep that Jesus
- 12:49Speaker 3: began to sweat like drops of blood. This was not
- 12:53Speaker 3: figurative language, and we know that some individuals, when under
- 12:57Speaker 3: extreme stress, can actually sweat blood. That's how broken and
- 13:02Speaker 3: troubled our Lord was. and yet He was willing for
- 13:05Speaker 3: you and me to endure the excruciating pain, the spiritual
- 13:09Speaker 3: pain of what was yet to come. Though the Father
- 13:12Speaker 3: did not take the cup away, He did not leave
- 13:15Speaker 3: His Son without comfort. In Luke 22, verse 43, we
- 13:19Speaker 3: read this, And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven,
- 13:23Speaker 3: strengthening Him. In our own lives, there are times when
- 13:27Speaker 3: we pray God, take away this cup, take away this hurt,
- 13:31Speaker 3: take away this pain, and yet the pain remains. But
- 13:35Speaker 3: God promises us that he will always be there for
- 13:38Speaker 3: us to comfort us and strengthen us as we walk
- 13:41Speaker 3: with him. He may send angels. His comfort, the comfort
- 13:45Speaker 3: of the Holy Spirit is there with us. We can
- 13:47Speaker 3: know that he never leaves us or forsakes us. Just
- 13:51Speaker 3: as he took care of his darling son, Jesus, he
- 13:54Speaker 3: will take care of us in Christ. Jesus then rose
- 13:58Speaker 3: and found his disciples sleeping. He awakened them and told
- 14:01Speaker 3: them to pray that they would not fall into temptation.
- 14:05Speaker 3: And though they would not face the same challenges and
- 14:07Speaker 3: suffering as Jesus, this night was not going to be
- 14:10Speaker 3: easy for them either. Even as our Lord prepared to
- 14:14Speaker 3: go to the cross, he ministered to those in his care.
- 14:19Speaker 3: While they were still in the garden, Judas arrived along
- 14:21Speaker 3: with Roman soldiers and religious leaders who had come to
- 14:25Speaker 3: seize Jesus. Judas approached Jesus and kissed his cheek, signaling
- 14:30Speaker 3: to the soldiers that this was their man. And in effect,
- 14:35Speaker 3: Judas kissed life goodbye. He kissed Jesus, who is the
- 14:39Speaker 3: way of the truth and the life, but he also
- 14:42Speaker 3: kissed his own life goodbye and sealed and settled his fate.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Jesus spoke calmly and gently to the soldiers, asking who
- 14:49Speaker 3: they were seeking. He responded, I am he. That's a
- 14:54Speaker 3: powerful statement. It was an I am statement. And when
- 14:58Speaker 3: he made it, some were taken off their feet and
- 15:01Speaker 3: thrown to the ground. Even in these moments, the words
- 15:05Speaker 3: of Christ were filled with power and strength. Peter again
- 15:09Speaker 3: acts brashly. He grabs a sword and managed to cut
- 15:12Speaker 3: off the ear of Malchus, servant of one of the
- 15:14Speaker 3: high priests. Jesus then rebuked Peter and then touched the man,
- 15:18Speaker 3: healing his ear. If anyone still expected Jesus to rise
- 15:22Speaker 3: up as a conquering king to overthrow the government, all
- 15:25Speaker 3: hope was lost at this point as he silently surrendered
- 15:29Speaker 3: to the will of the Father and went with the
- 15:31Speaker 3: accusers to drink the cup that the Father had given him. Indeed,
- 15:36Speaker 3: it looked like all hope was lost, but God was
- 15:39Speaker 3: about to bring the greatest hope to all the world. Jesus,
- 15:43Speaker 3: how we thank you that you surrendered your will to
- 15:46Speaker 3: the will of the Father. that you gave your life
- 15:48Speaker 3: to fulfill your purpose and plan on earth, and that
- 15:51Speaker 3: is to die on the cross for our sins. Thank
- 15:54Speaker 3: you for this good news of salvation, that if we
- 15:57Speaker 3: put our faith and trust in you by repenting of
- 16:00Speaker 3: our sins and receiving you as Lord and Savior, that
- 16:03Speaker 3: all of our sins can be forgiven, that you will
- 16:06Speaker 3: live in us, and that we will live with you
- 16:08Speaker 3: forever in heaven. We thank you for the hope that
- 16:11Speaker 3: you have provided for us at the cross and in
- 16:13Speaker 3: the power of your resurrection. In Jesus' name.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Amen.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
