Transcript
- 0:00oh yeah, that is Mr.
- 0:01Thomas Lame and I getting down on this collab session number three on the goal.
- 0:07and if you didn't catch it, yeah, we're absolutely talking about the book titled The Goal, and that's on the theories of Constraints.
- 0:15And there's a lot of depth that we're gonna get into there.
- 0:18And Thomas man, he took us way deep because we started talking about masculinity.
- 0:23We started talking about mental wellness.
- 0:24We started talking about the stigma that we need to break around mental wellness or mental toughness.
- 0:32A lot of us are suffering.
- 0:34We know that our industry is ill, and we have a mental health crisis until we change the stigma and get courageous and start talking about.
- 0:44Depression in men and start talking or even asking for help or raising your hand and saying, Hey, I have a problem.
- 0:51until we start doing that, we we're gonna keep repeating the same darn thing, and I know we're some problem solvers in this industry.
- 0:57So please, I invite you and challenge you to take to heart the ideas that are presented in this conversation Come up with an action.
- 1:08Like what is one thing you can do that would contribute to the mental wellness of another man out there?
- 1:14And yep.
- 1:15I am being biased.
- 1:16We are talking about, man, we are talk, talking about masculinity.
- 1:20And ladies, please, we need your help too.
- 1:22So maybe you can give us some pointers.
- 1:24Maybe you can set us straight.
- 1:25Maybe you can just check on us once in a while to make sure we're doing okay.
- 1:29That's what we need.
- 1:30We gotta give a shout out to all the patrons out there.
- 1:32If you're listening to this, you can't see this, so you wanna go jump over to our YouTube channel and check it out.
- 1:37I'm at a hotel in New Orleans right now recording this intro, and I got a fancy, like different colored light, and I got another fancy little light here to give it some depth and some shadows.
- 1:48It's because the patron's sponsorship and commitment to helping us enhance the image of careers and the trades, that enables me to go and get all these little gadgets and add a little extra value, a little extra possess.
- 2:01So patrons love you very much.
- 2:03Thank you for supporting us and believing in us.
- 2:06The rest of y'all love y'all just as much.
- 2:09and here we go back to the conversation.
- 2:15He's wearing the, the school guard, you know, the full brim?
- 2:19Yes.
- 2:19The school guard.
- 2:20He's wearing that.
- 2:21So where do people, like, where does that like stem from?
- 2:24The popularity, That hard hat, Is it that photo?
- 2:26It's very famous.
- 2:27. Ah, and then there's the third photo.
- 2:32It's Louis Hines.
- 2:33He's a very famous photo photographer from the kind of the Great Depression, but it was from 1920.
- 2:40He's a mechanic mechanical worker.
- 2:43He's working on a steam pump and he is all hunched over, but he's like, his muscles are jacked.
- 2:50The three most famous photos are, they're all men.
- 2:54They're all white.
- 2:56They're not in good ergonomic positions.
- 2:58Like all of them are hunched over or in like grave peril.
- 3:02This is this is how we identify in the United States in construction.
- 3:06Like this is the, this is the source code in which we we identify on.
- 3:13And it's not to say that being masculine or having masculine qualities is bad.
- 3:18It's, it's not, It's good.
- 3:19I say it's normal to be dirty, It's normal to be not working good ergonomics.
- 3:27It's normal to take risks.
- 3:30Yes.
- 3:30And in fact, it's like, it's so normal that like that's what we see and the most famous photographs reinforce that.
- 3:38So even, not only do we in construction as men identify that, but like everybody else, In world.
- 3:46That's what they identify us as being.
- 3:48So if we're not that, it's, it's weird.
- 3:51Yeah.
- 3:51So it's like if we're not that we're a against it.
- 3:56Yeah.
- 3:56So if you actually, if you go against it, you're automatically seen as not normal.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:02Less than.
- 4:03Yeah.
- 4:04So there's another, I'll just tell you now, I don't know if you read it , but I go at, I go after we've, we've normalized a male stigma before Pfizer did with Viagra, right?
- 4:18Yes.
- 4:18It's now normal to talk about, or at least have an advertisement on TV about erectile dysfunction.
- 4:26So like, how did we do that?
- 4:27Like Pfizer had millions of dollars in advertising campaigns and they made it normal.
- 4:33And over time, society has accepted that yes, if you have erectile dysfunction as a man, you can take medicine for that. And, and there's some studies with that.
- 4:46And they, they found that through the normalization on that, more and more people go and talk about that with their doctors.
- 4:52So it's like, how are we going to change the stigma in construction?
- 4:56We have to start talking about it.
- 4:58Yes.
- 4:59Again, and again, and again, and again, and again and again, and be weird.
- 5:03And that's what we have to do.
- 5:05If we don't do that, we will not change that.
- 5:07, facing brutal facts.
- 5:09You have to do it.
- 5:10If you don't face the fact that Herbi is the slowest, you won't investigate his backpack.
- 5:15You won't see that he is overloaded.
- 5:17You won't see that he packed too much stuff.
- 5:20And you won't, you can't address the the problem.
- 5:23Yeah.
- 5:23You can't address the problem.
- 5:24Like, you can't take the load off of Herbie and tell you face, face the facts.
- 5:28So.
- 5:29Yes.
- 5:29Yes.
- 5:30And how do we do that?
- 5:30We normalize it.
- 5:31All right, so we're back after a little bit of a break.
- 5:34How was your vacation, brother?
- 5:36It's great.
- 5:37It's great.
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:38Yeah.
- 5:39Went home well home.
- 5:42I went from where I'm from originally to Nebraska.
- 5:46And I saw family, I saw my parents and I saw my grandmother.
- 5:50Nice.
- 5:51And I saw my aunt and uncle and cousins.
- 5:55It's you know, you only get one, you only get one family.
- 5:59Yes, yes.
- 6:00And choose your friends.
- 6:02But it's it's good to see people and reconnect and be back and be able to do that and not feel like you're putting people at risk when you're traveling.
- 6:12So it's really good to be back and, and yeah.
- 6:15And have, and be able to do that and, and connect with family members because yeah, it's, it's, it's all you got at the end of the day.
- 6:25Your families are the ones who are closest to you.
- 6:27So, And one, one thing I've really, I've really kind of recently tried to do is, is try trini, make that a priority more than, Yeah.
- 6:37It's not easy, right?
- 6:38Like right now I'm at the Zen cabin.
- 6:42I'm in a little tiny home that Zen cabin.
- 6:45Yeah, Yeah.
- 6:46That's the name of it.
- 6:46The Zen cabin.
- 6:47You see the little Buddha over here?
- 6:50Let me see if I could give you a real quick tour.
- 6:53There's the stairway up to the bed up top, there's the kitchen and there's the closets in the door.
- 7:02Are you in San Antonio or where at?
- 7:04No, no, I'm in Canyon Lake which is just 45, 60 minutes out of San Antonio North near New Braunfels.
- 7:14But it's, you know, when I, when I went independent in lunch, my business that sounds so fancy one of the commitments I made was to take a few days off at once a month to get creative, to decompress, to just change my environment.
- 7:33And so far I'm batting three for three, but it's, it's uncomfortable, right?
- 7:37Like today, I realized I got here yesterday and I realized that impact my charger for my damn computer, . So I drove home.
- 7:46Like, if we didn't have this call scheduled, I would've said hell with it.
- 7:50Like, I'm just, I'm gonna more, more reason to chill but say, no, no, no, I need to go get it.
- 7:55And I called a buddy of mine that he used to work with Eric Stone, and he's like, You sound like you're on the road.
- 8:00I'm like, Yeah, man.
- 8:01Like I'm on vacation and I went to get my, my charger.
- 8:05He's like, Jesse, but if you're on vacation, what do you need your charger for?
- 8:08I'm like, Don't judge me, man.
- 8:10, I'm trying to build new habits here.
- 8:13But it's so much time that we've spent, right?
- 8:17Like grinding and grinding in 12 hours, 16 hours.
- 8:20I got thing, I got this.
- 8:21I gotta deliver, blah.
- 8:22Taking time off is, is not easy.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:25It's good.
- 8:26But with repetition, we can get there.
- 8:29Yes.
- 8:30Well, you need two things.
- 8:31You need a reinforcing cycle.
- 8:34Yes.
- 8:34Right?
- 8:35Yes.
- 8:35And then you need a balancing cycle.
- 8:37So it sounds like you're doing the balancing part now.
- 8:39Mm-hmm.
- 8:40. Mm-hmm.
- 8:41.
- 8:41Awesome.
- 8:42Yeah, man.
- 8:43Good.
- 8:43So we're of what?
- 8:44Chapter 11?
- 8:45Chapter 11?
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:46We're, we're just, we're just tearing through this book.
- 8:48. , I knows.
- 8:49Gonna be a, a, just a, that 25, maybe 30 part podcast.
- 8:54Maybe it'll just go forever.
- 8:55We'll just, we'll, just once we hit the end of it, and we'll loop back, Just start back over with the sec, the sixth edition.
- 9:02It's so like, ah, the book.
- 9:04It's so good.
- 9:05I mean, now I tell people, I'm like, we're talking about the goal and they're like, the goal, like, I'm like, you don't know.
- 9:11Yep.
- 9:12Let me tell you about, Actually no, I was gonna come out and you have to listen.
- 9:16We're gonna get in the juicy part.
- 9:18And it's juicy because it all, a lot of the theory now comes into practice and it, it and so if you're on a journey, you're gonna talk about a journey too.
- 9:30Yep.
- 9:31some Boy Scouts.
- 9:32But if you're on a journey, the first thing you have to do is, is you have to be open to learn.
- 9:39You have to be open to learn.
- 9:40So like, if I'm not open to learn, then I won't.
- 9:44I'll sh I'll shut it down.
- 9:45So first thing I have to do is be open to learn.
- 9:48And Alex Rogo does that.
- 9:51When he, he, he's like, I gotta get this, This Jonah guy is my old college professor.
- 9:56And now, now Jonah is this like, he's like yourself.
- 9:59This, this highly paid jet setting, business consultant globetrotting.
- 10:06And did you know Gold Rat consulted with Amazon?
- 10:11No.
- 10:12Yeah, yeah.
- 10:13Oh yes.
- 10:15And, and Jeff Bezos would do kind of what kind of what we're doing here in a way where they, they would get executives together and they would do study action teams in one of the books in the early days of Amazon was the goal.
- 10:33Yeah.
- 10:33And if you kind of, if if we're we're affiliated with a, an, a few Amazon, I, I can't exactly say what they are, but let's say, let's say that they're projects and now you kind, I you can't, I can't, You kinda see, you kind of see the, the connection.
- 10:50There's real connection there cuz yeah.
- 10:53So it's interesting.
- 10:54So I know this stuff works, . Yeah.
- 10:57What we're we're about to talk about is, is life changing for me cuz it change, like it changed my paradigm.
- 11:04And your paradigm is, is how you see the world.
- 11:07And we all have different ones, but it's the center of your experience, your beliefs and your thoughts and your mood at the current time.
- 11:16And that's, whatever that is at that very specific moment, that's your paradigm.
- 11:20And if it shifts through a changing of your, you know, your mindset and your attitude and your behaviors, you can change your paradigm.
- 11:29And, and this book help helped me kind of see that through this series of experiments that Alex and the, the team over there at Unico goes through.
- 11:40So let's just wanna just get into it.
- 11:43Let's do baby.
- 11:44I'm excited.
- 11:45I wanna Parum shift.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27There's a G in there.
- 12:29. . The G is silent.
- 12:30All right.
- 12:31So I I think it starts off Chapter 11.
- 12:35It's, it's him and his wife.
- 12:37And have you ever woke up because his, his son wakes him up and he is like, Hey dad, , what are you doing?
- 12:45Actually, no, no.
- 12:45He comes home, I'm sorry.
- 12:47He comes home and he is like, Oh, by the way, I have to go.
- 12:50I know we had this really romantic weekend and I promise I've been working like crazy hours, blah, blah, blah.
- 12:55I'm just making, I've been making excuses, but I have one more excuse at the last second.
- 13:00I have to take my son on a camping trip cuz I promised him and his scout troop.
- 13:07So he starts it off.
- 13:09And this is this is his wife Julie.
- 13:11She goes, Thanks for the advanced notice. If I'd known earlier, I would've told you.
- 13:17I say, Everything is unexpected with you lately.
- 13:21She says, Don't I always tell you when I've got trips coming up?
- 13:25She fidgets next to the bedroom door.
- 13:27I'm packing an overnight ba bag with which lies on the bed.
- 13:31We're alone.
- 13:31Sharon . Sharon is down the street at a friend's house.
- 13:35So she just bails on him and, and I can understand why this is.
- 13:40Yep.
- 13:41You just kind of, you're like, set the whole week up and now you're gonna bail on a romantic weekend with your wife Dave's at band practice.
- 13:49Like you're just like having this internal conversation with yourselves, , when is it gonna end?
- 13:55He's like, I stop midway from some underwear.
- 13:58From a drawer.
- 13:59It's so specific.
- 14:00I get, I'm getting irritated by the questions because we just went over the whole thing five minutes ago.
- 14:05Why is it so hard for her to understand?
- 14:07Julie?
- 14:08Why can't you read my brain?
- 14:10Yep.
- 14:11Julie, I don't know.
- 14:12I've got a lot of problems to solve.
- 14:14More fidgeting.
- 14:15She doesn't like.
- 14:15It occurs to me that she doesn't trust me or something.
- 14:19This is the, this is the moment where issues at work, they, they trickle right in to to your life.
- 14:27Whether you, whether you try and, you know, we talked about the membrane.
- 14:31There is no membrane.
- 14:33And if you have a membrane, it's permeable.
- 14:35That means that there's stuff that can flow through it.
- 14:37Does that ever, does that sound, I mean, that's, that's me.
- 14:40This is why I have multiple scrum boards in my house because I forget and I still, Angeline, I love you to death.
- 14:48I will go on record, but I often forget to tell you things and I often forget to listen.
- 14:53So we have to write stuff down and constantly remind ourselves with pieces of paper in the kitchen, in the bedroom, wherever.
- 15:01Just get it up there.
- 15:02Get it up.
- 15:02Start talking about it.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:04But have you ever had a problem that you brought home and it affected your personal relationship so much that the other person stopped trusting you?
- 15:13Oh, 100%.
- 15:15, like, I don't know, 80% of my career , like just working.
- 15:21I think, well we have the book that the, the Lean in Love book, which is kind of based on that.
- 15:28And for me, where it was real, that's a like a big anchor point.
- 15:34Not the book necessarily, but how the book came about.
- 15:37It was a kick in the teeth.
- 15:39When me and that person were having arguments that I've had within other relationships, and like for me, the way it registered was like, Oh, it's not like they don't trust me.
- 15:53She, it's not that she doesn't trust me anymore, it's that she 100% trusts me to put work first.
- 16:02, like she gave up on hoping that she would be a priority, and now she just expects me to make work the priority.
- 16:12Like that was the Yeah.
- 16:13Like, damn it man.
- 16:14I, I did it again.
- 16:16Did you do it like Alex and make a promise that your, your, your butt, can you, It's a top gun reference.
- 16:22You're making cash checks.
- 16:23What is it?
- 16:24Reference, The check.
- 16:25The reference I think of is I let my alligator mouth outweigh my hummingbird behind.
- 16:32Right?
- 16:32Like I overcommitted I committed to do something that I could not deliver on.
- 16:37And there were, I mean, man, there were some, I had this one discussion, maybe it was a debate, maybe not.
- 16:44I, I rescheduled on a date.
- 16:46I was meeting somebody, we're gonna go to dinner and we're gonna go dancing.
- 16:49And that afternoon, it was about noon, I text her and said, Hey, like, I gotta reschedule.
- 16:55I gotta, I'm gonna work late and blah, blah, blah.
- 16:57And a couple weeks later, the her friend that connected us was like, Hey man, I can't believe you stood my friend up.
- 17:05I was like, stood her up.
- 17:06I didn't stand her up like I called her, like I texted her and then we talked and she said, Okay, it's fine.
- 17:10We'll reschedule.
- 17:12So I still don't know if that qualifies as standing somebody up.
- 17:15But the fact is that's just another data point proving that I will always, well, I have always.
- 17:23Let work spill into my personal life.
- 17:26And it's always been a priority.
- 17:28And then it's funny cuz then I'll get frustrated like, you know, why don't we, let's go do something fun.
- 17:32Like, or why can't we plan something fun?
- 17:34Well, because you always flake out.
- 17:36Yeah.
- 17:37That's why we can't plan something fun.
- 17:39See, it's, it is the erosion.
- 17:40Yes.
- 17:41The erosion perfectly said.
- 17:43Yeah.
- 17:44That's so good.
- 17:45That's so good.
- 17:47And if you're doing fives in your relationship , you would have an indicator of erosion when you did your standardization.
- 17:54Yes.
- 17:56Or even, even sorting cuz when you do sorting, be like, Hey, I have this thing, we have this planned out weekend on on Saturday morning and I'm gonna, we're gonna go to, we're gonna go to brunch.
- 18:09This is a very Texas thing.
- 18:11It's everywhere.
- 18:11I'm like kidding.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:12Go to brunch and be like, Well you can't go to brunch cuz you have the thing with Davey on Saturday morning.
- 18:17And you're like, You're right.
- 18:19Nevermind.
- 18:19You can't make that promise.
- 18:21So yes, it's Captain Tom Stinger in Top Gun, the captain.
- 18:25He's like the captain of the air wing.
- 18:27He's like, to Maverick, he's like, your ego's writing checks so your butt can't cash your, your body can't cash.
- 18:34Yes.
- 18:34You, I got another that's the that's, that's so, so plug fibers and relationships.
- 18:41And I'm, I'm not any kind of person to be, to be to be held on a high, high standard of doing this.
- 18:50But it's a, it's a practice.
- 18:52And it's a practice.
- 18:53Yes.
- 18:53I would say, And that's the thing about trust and that's how they start out.
- 18:57Chapter 11.
- 18:58This is a trust.
- 18:59Trust in relationships only given.
- 19:01You can only give trust.
- 19:03You can.
- 19:03It's only given.
- 19:05Yes.
- 19:05You can't buy it.
- 19:08Nope.
- 19:08You can't hope for it.
- 19:10You can't, you can't.
- 19:12Like maybe for a very short term, you can trick people in the trusting you.
- 19:17Very, very short term.
- 19:18Yes.
- 19:20But now trust, you have to give it, give it, and by giving it meaning, like you make a promise, you stick to it.
- 19:27That's how you, that's how you give it.
- 19:29That's that say do ratio, right?
- 19:30Yes.
- 19:32That's the trust.
- 19:33Yes.
- 19:33So the readers of the goal, let's go back to the book before we get too crazy , but the readers of the goal they're introduced to, especially in chapter 11, you're introduced at theory of constraints.
- 19:45T c if you're, if you're like legit.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:49If you, if you're in the lane, in Agile community, you call it t c I call it theory of constraints.
- 19:54You're introduced in chapter 11, we're gonna really get into it.
- 19:57But chapter 11 my kind of summary title is Dependent Events and Statistical Fluctuations.
- 20:05Ooh.
- 20:06Dependent Events.
- 20:07That means there's an event, then there's something that's dependent on that sec.
- 20:11So the second event, you need the first event to happen for the second time.
- 20:14Yes.
- 20:15, It happens on airplanes, , and then statistical fluctuations, meaning that like this is the real world.
- 20:22Even in robotics, even in Amazon there's, if things don't work completely exactly the same, even if you try to do it.
- 20:33Yep.
- 20:34There are statistical fluctuations.
- 20:35So even if you make the most beautiful plan, statistical fluctuation, Just that's, that's Murphy.
- 20:42Yes.
- 20:43So Alex goes to New York City.
- 20:45He goes to the hotel lobby, if you've seen the movie.
- 20:48Have you seen the movie?
- 20:49No.
- 20:50Okay.
- 20:50You told me there's a movie.
- 20:51I'm like, Man, there's a film.
- 20:54There's only, You could buy it from the Gold Rat Institute, I think.
- 20:58I think that's where you can buy it.
- 20:59Okay.
- 21:00Probably on BHS . Yeah.
- 21:02Yeah.
- 21:03There's a few clips on YouTube if you want to go.
- 21:05The listeners want to go check that out.
- 21:08The gold just type in the gold, gold rat.
- 21:11And there's some clips.
- 21:13One of the clips is this scene where they're in New York City, jet setting.
- 21:18Jesse, here, you know, I gotta, I gotta chase you down, so I gotta go find you in New York.
- 21:23. Yeah.
- 21:23On your way to the United Nations or something.
- 21:25Yeah.
- 21:26Over coffee.
- 21:27So they, they meet over coffee and they both sit down and they the waiter's like, Hey, you can't just order coffee.
- 21:34And they're like, Well, we want a pot.
- 21:36Each Yeah.
- 21:37And a gallon of cream.
- 21:39So , they they talk about the two more, most important concepts of the goal.
- 21:45And that's the theory of constraints.
- 21:47So this is what Jonah says.
- 21:48He says, Most of the time, your struggle for high efficiencies is taking you in the opposite direction of your goal.
- 21:55Yes.
- 21:55Period.
- 21:56Yes.
- 21:57Most, Most.
- 21:58Okay.
- 21:58Let's break this down.
- 21:59Most of the time, your struggle for high efficiency is taking you in the opposite direction over your goal.
- 22:07So it literally, you trying to have efficiency and you're struggling with that, whatever you're doing to make something more efficient.
- 22:16Most of the time it's, it's the, it's the actual opposite thing you should do.
- 22:22Yeah.
- 22:22So his, his, his advice was like, whatever you're doing, do the exact opposite.
- 22:27. So if you have a huge ego, you hear that, Oh man, so that's, that's the first thing he says.
- 22:32And the second thing he says, A plant, which everyone is working all the time, is very inefficient, where everyone is working all the time.
- 22:42It is very inefficient.
- 22:44And why is that?
- 22:45Pent events and statistical fluctuations.
- 22:49So, so I wanna talk about, here we go.
- 22:53Gold rat in chapter 11 lays out the, the old critical path method versus production systems argument.
- 23:02He just lays it out there.
- 23:04He says, If everybody's working in a critical path method, you are incredibly inefficient.
- 23:10And this is an argument, This is in fact, right.
- 23:13I'm not gonna go there.
- 23:14But I'm just saying there is a theory as that, that, that we're gonna talk about that, that the, if everyone is working exactly, that means if you have, if you have activity A and activity A is two days, and activity B is one day, you need two days plus one day, that's three days for those activities.
- 23:33That's dependent events.
- 23:34Yeah.
- 23:35. So if you think of a process chart with boxes lined up and columns, and so if you think, if you can imagine a process map and you have a box and a box on a box, kinda like a pole plant, or if you've seen a process map where you have your series of win and then you have your.
- 23:53If, if they're happy to, at the same time you can stack them, right?
- 23:58So you have columns and rows.
- 24:00And then if you connect those boxes with arrows that says when this activity and then this activity, and then this activity, and then this activity, and then this activity, If this happens, and then this happens, if this, if this, then that, if this, then that logic.
- 24:17Yep.
- 24:17It's literally logic.
- 24:20It utilizes now CPM utilizes statistical techniques to manage defined activities of, let's say a project.
- 24:29That's where we live in, We live in a project, the strong emphasis of getting choked up.
- 24:34So trying to make an emphasis, you have to make a strong emphasis on defined activities.
- 24:40Yes.
- 24:40Defined definition.
- 24:42It is, you have to emphasize definition.
- 24:45If you don't understand the definition of the what's in that activity bar, the, you know, the description part your, your logic might be flawed.
- 24:53So the, and I, I have a couple examples that I wrote down.
- 24:58Install foundations, that's an, that's a, that's an event or an activity.
- 25:03Weld steel decking tape and finished drywall, energize electrical system with permanent power.
- 25:10That might be a milestone.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:13That could be a milestone.
- 25:14. But these are, these are activities that are defined.
- 25:18They have a definition, like you can, you can, you can define what install foundations is like.
- 25:24It has parts and it has things, so you can put time to that.
- 25:28And then there's dependent events.
- 25:29You can't do this before you do that.
- 25:31So dependent events, if we, if we plan that way, We create two phenomenon according to Jonah.
- 25:39The first is dependent events.
- 25:41I keep talking about that.
- 25:42A series events that must take place before another begins, right?
- 25:48So it has to take place ahead.
- 25:50So that would be a I'm gonna get this.
- 25:53I'm gonna, there's gonna be schedulers that are gonna slaughtered me, but at, at an event, a dependent event and critical path method is a finished to start.
- 26:02Fundamentally, there's probably more than that.
- 26:06Fundamentally, I have to do activity A has to finish before activity B starts.
- 26:13And then there's a logic tie that's between two.
- 26:15Yeah.
- 26:16So that's the first phenomenon.
- 26:18You have to do that.
- 26:19It's like trains in a car.
- 26:21Imagine if there was a train.
- 26:22We're gonna start talking about trains here, but it's for a, for a train.
- 26:28Well, you're in Texas.
- 26:29You see trains all the time.
- 26:30Oh yeah.
- 26:31My mom lives like less than a block away from a railroad tracks.
- 26:34Yes.
- 26:34I live on the east coast.
- 26:35I see trains all the time too.
- 26:36I don't know what I'm talking about , but if you're waiting for a train, you see, you see this phenomenon happy in front of you.
- 26:43Right?
- 26:43Cause you see the engine and then you see all the cars go by it.
- 26:46And they're all tied together with logic or they're actually tied together Mechanically Yes.
- 26:51But the total, the total time that train is in front of you is from the time in which the arm goes down to all of the train cars and engines and tanks or whatever it is, until sometimes it can boost.
- 27:06I think they get rid of those years ago.
- 27:08Yeah.
- 27:08until that, that last train, car leaves and the arm goes up.
- 27:12That's the top.
- 27:12That's, that's, that's the critical.
- 27:15Of that sequence of events, , those are all dependent events.
- 27:18They, all those cars have to go by.
- 27:20So that's the first phenomenon.
- 27:21The second phenomenon is a little more squishy.
- 27:25It's statistical fluctuations.
- 27:27And I'm probably going to offend a whole bunch of like really smart math mathematicians and people with math degrees.
- 27:33And I barely even count with my fingers and toes.
- 27:36So , bear with me.
- 27:38But statistical fluctuations, the length of events and outcomes are not completely deterministic.
- 27:45It's like, it's not, you can't determine exactly to the micro millisecond how long that train will go in front of you because it depends.
- 27:56It depends, yes.
- 27:57Depends on traffic, depends on weather, depends on even like the temperature and humidity affect the length of the train because of mechanics and materials and, and temperatures.
- 28:10So there's, you can't completely determine.
- 28:14You can get pretty close.
- 28:16But if you've ever been in this phenomenon, you've waited for an airplane mm-hmm.
- 28:22because oftentimes the airplane is not only picking you up and flying to your destination.
- 28:29It's usually flying in from somewhere else and landing and offloading the people that were on there.
- 28:34And then you load on there and you go away.
- 28:36So if off, and oftentimes the, the, the weather, just the statistical fluctuation is different from geography, location to geography, location.
- 28:46So there might be a delay or sometimes there's construction on the road or sometimes, you know, there's statistics.
- 28:53So, so you can't perfectly predict with statistical fluctuations.
- 28:58Any, anything.
- 29:00Yes.
- 29:01So nothing is deterministic.
- 29:03Nothing is deterministic.
- 29:05And I'll go back to my example of the hoist.
- 29:08Yes.
- 29:08So, and oftentimes when we do vertical construction, there's a it's a, it's pretty common knowledge that when we go, we do more floors, we should get faster because we're just getting better at what we do.
- 29:25And that's partly true.
- 29:26That is partly true.
- 29:28People do understand there's patterns and behaviors and, and you un like, you start to communicate better.
- 29:35Like there's that, there's probably laws, and I'm offending production people now production laws.
- 29:41But but there's also statistical fluctuations that work against you because it's like, it takes longer to get up to that higher location.
- 29:51It takes longer for cranes to lift, it takes longer because the higher up you go, this wind, the wind changes.
- 29:59Yep.
- 29:59And there's like, there's lots of factors that we, we now have to take consideration, but oftentimes we don't.
- 30:06We just say, Hey, we're gonna, we're, we're on this five day cycle.
- 30:11We just get better Yes.
- 30:13So that's the issue with cpm.
- 30:15I think it's, I think it's fine.
- 30:17It's, it's a fine method to do primary planning.
- 30:19I think it because it's very effective.
- 30:22It's very quick.
- 30:23There's computer programs that work.
- 30:24Now, this is probably shocking, Jesse, right now that I'm from a proponent of cpm, but I use it all the time.
- 30:30And we, and then construction, it's, it is a very effective manner to figure out the, your combination of dependent events and fluctuations.
- 30:38Yeah.
- 30:38Cause you can you can run what if reports and all these kinds of things and you can add in logic and you add in buffers.
- 30:45You can do that.
- 30:46But one thing you can't do, you can't math away from the real world.
- 30:53You can't math it, you can't plan it, you can't you can put in contingencies.
- 30:59That's all you can do.
- 31:01Yes.
- 31:01But it's not to say that computerized logic and critical path is wrong.
- 31:06I use it.
- 31:07I've looked at it today,. It's not wrong or bad.
- 31:10However, it's extremely risky to only put your primary decision making process in that single method.
- 31:18It's extremely risky because if you're only, if you're only utilizing a very rigid system to make modifications.
- 31:26So that rigid system is incredibly time.
- 31:28Time, Oh God, yes.
- 31:30Consuming.
- 31:31Because you have to go and, and it's all manual.
- 31:33You have to you have to, you have to change the cars on the train.
- 31:37Mm-hmm.
- 31:38, Right?
- 31:38Even changing the cars and the trains.
- 31:40Very manual process and it's, it's hard to do.
- 31:42Creates delays.
- 31:43It creates all that.
- 31:44So, so we're gonna talk about why don't put all your eggs in a CPM basket.
- 31:51Think about that.
- 31:51What do you think?
- 31:52What's your take?
- 31:53I, I know I loved your take when you were talking with lean builders, Keon and Joe, and, and that was, you had a great comment.
- 32:02I'll just let you, you know, don't remember I, you killed, you killed the argument.
- 32:06You said it was a respect and trust, bro.
- 32:08Yeah.
- 32:08This is chapter 11 in the goal.
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:10I mean, so I remember that that conversation was, we started talking about this CPM thing and, and it, it's just my observation and it's, I just default to it.
- 32:20And I think it's because of my background as, as a tradesman and working out there kind of being the victim of these schedules.
- 32:28It's like we spend all this damn time talking about schedules and what's the best scheduling method and what, like, who cares?
- 32:35Cuz we have a people problem , we don't, What we need to be worried about is taking care of the men and women that come out and do this damn work that the life that we're stealing from them because of poorly designed work, the life that we're stealing from them, because we're trying to math reality out and math it away.
- 32:56Yeah.
- 32:56You can't math it away.
- 32:58Like, dude, that's like the old, we're gonna make t-shirts of that.
- 33:00You can't math it away.
- 33:02Like you gotta account for all the stuff.
- 33:06You gotta be prepared to absorb it and, and adjust to it.
- 33:10But instead we say, but the, the schedule says like, Okay, great, but guess what?
- 33:17Reality is telling us something else.
- 33:20If everybody is working in your plant, Alex, you are incredibly inefficient.
- 33:26Yes.
- 33:26People are busy and, and well the schedule says you gotta start here, so go ahead and start.
- 33:31It's like, yeah, but the tape and floater, still's gotta get up there and do their fire taping and I hang that duck and it's gonna cut 'em off.
- 33:38Well, too bad because they're behind.
- 33:40They should have had that done.
- 33:41Okay, now we're gonna, let's just elevate the risk to their life.
- 33:45Yeah.
- 33:46Now we just designed a, a system in which a taper has to go and climb on top of a duck to Exactly.
- 33:52Do his do his job.
- 33:52Yes, exactly.
- 33:54And take a risk schedule set.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:56Because the schedule set.
- 33:57So why is it not important?
- 34:00Why is it, why is it completely inefficient?
- 34:02If if everybody's working Yeah.
- 34:04And everybody's working.
- 34:05Hey, everybody's jamming.
- 34:07Everybody's jamming.
- 34:08Why are we so inefficient?
- 34:09So how often do you, do you hear of projects going longer than originally planned?
- 34:14Oh my god.
- 34:15So I'm gonna add in overtime as going longer, going longer than the original plan.
- 34:22Yeah.
- 34:23I think it's easier to think about the times that it didn't happen , like all the time.
- 34:29Always going longer than originally planned.
- 34:32You know, I used to have this discussion, well I've had it several times with people because they're celebrating whatever they negotiated as the extended duration of the project and we made it on schedule.
- 34:44Like we made it three weeks early.
- 34:46Yeah.
- 34:47Like it's not an accomplishment.
- 34:49Like that's a contractual obligation.
- 34:51Yes, you made it on schedule, but how many dates did you cancel?
- 34:56How many ball games did you miss?
- 34:58Right.
- 34:58How much real life did you sacrifice to make this date that you're claiming was the date?
- 35:05Which we all know was an extension from the original plan.
- 35:09That's right.
- 35:10So short answer is very, very few.
- 35:12. So the second question, how completed on time without the use of overtime or expediting or pressure that never I I can say that I've ever heard of that.
- 35:28Even heard of it.
- 35:29So it is even less than the first question, Correct.
- 35:33Yeah.
- 35:35Yeah.
- 35:35So yeah, that's that's a good one.
- 35:38And then the third question is how often do you hear of projects going over budget, over the original budget?
- 35:44Oh my God, I, that's a high frequency, but I have been a part of projects that didn't go over budget.
- 35:52Mm-hmm.
- 35:53fewer.
- 35:53But it, yeah.
- 35:54It's, it's Is it, is it, is it less than the projects that are completed on time?
- 36:01Without over time and expediting?
- 36:03No, no, no, no.
- 36:04I think or more, I've had more experiences where the projects came within budget or even outperform the budget with overtime, like all that other stuff.
- 36:15What you're saying is like, that could have been priced in.
- 36:18Possibly.
- 36:19I may have waited on some of that.
- 36:22Yeah.
- 36:22No, so that's that's what what was saying is that like, we plan for this, we plan for the inefficiencies.
- 36:30Like the inefficiency is normalized.
- 36:32Yes.
- 36:33And that's not to say this is a lot of people that work really hard on keeping projects and there I don't wanna like trash on constructing industry.
- 36:41No, no.
- 36:42This is real world.
- 36:43We work in the elements.
- 36:45We work at heights, We work, This is no joke.
- 36:49We have, we got tough job.
- 36:51So yes, that's chapter 11.
- 36:53It's basically Jonah's like two things.
- 36:57Here's, there's two nice little nuggets.
- 36:59And he drives off in his limo.
- 37:01Mr.
- 37:02Consultant , he drives off into his limo to probably a high rise, a Fortune 500 company in New York City.
- 37:10But so we go on to chapter 12, and this is writing checks.
- 37:15Your relationships Can't cash.
- 37:17And I wrote this summary like around the time when like y'all were doing.
- 37:23Regular live streams with five of us relationships.
- 37:26So, Oh, like when I was putting this together, this little summary here, this was like very front of mine.
- 37:32So thank you for the influence chapter is, is thinking about, he's kind of like reflecting on a time before, like, you know, you didn't go down memory lane.
- 37:43He goes, There's a guy I heard about in Unico who came home from work one night.
- 37:48He walked in, his wife had taken everything, the kids, the dog, the goldfish, the furniture, the carpets, everything.
- 37:56Well, she actually left him two things, the clothes and a note written on, in lipstick on the bathroom mirror, which says, Goodbye You bastard . This is a good song by Blackhawk, by the way.
- 38:09Goodbye says it all.
- 38:11Yep.
- 38:11Big rag.
- 38:12Goodbye lipstick on the wall.
- 38:14What's your what's your favorite song about Texas?
- 38:18Random.
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:20I guess country.
- 38:21There's, well, I don't know if this one's about Texas.
- 38:23So the, the easy one is all my exes live in Texas, which is, No, that's easy.
- 38:27Right?
- 38:28No longer True.
- 38:29That is not a true song.
- 38:30So I, that doesn't count.
- 38:32The other one, I don't know if it even mentions Texas, but it's a country song and it says, it's the kind of, the riff is I'm too young to be this damned old.
- 38:44Right.
- 38:44And, and when that song came out, I was, is it Garth Brooks?
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:48Well, he, maybe he sings one rendition of it, but yeah, it's good.
- 38:51That's a good jam.
- 38:52Yes, yes.
- 38:53And I had just turned, man, I must have been 30, it was in like 20, between 29 and 31 years old.
- 39:01And I had just like had my second divorce, like all kinds of, that, these were like outcomes of my behavior with my relationship, rather with work the way I coped with the stress and funk of work led to me before 30 years old, having had, I was too young to be that damned old Like most of the people I knew, they were 50 and 60 and had the types of problems that I had.
- 39:32And, and I'm, I wasn't even 30 yet, and I like, man, I was on the fast track.
- 39:37.
- 39:37Yeah.
- 39:37Yes.
- 39:38There's a good line in that in that song I really like, it's talking about a worn out tape from Chris Lado and my sister lives in Buffalo, Wyoming.
- 39:48On the way to Buffalo, you drive through Casey, Casey, Wyoming, That's a map dot, but that's where the Lados are from.
- 39:56And there's a memorial there in Casey.
- 39:58So, but yeah.
- 39:59That's, that's great.
- 40:00Jan.
- 40:01But yeah, so, so goodbye says it all.
- 40:04Like that is a profound statement.
- 40:06So on page one 30 Alex's wife, she makes this statement, Your job has always been on the line.
- 40:13Always.
- 40:14So if you're such a marginal employee, why do they keep giving you promotions and more money out, out, say like, Oh man.
- 40:25So is this sound familiar?
- 40:26Like you ever lived and on a razor judge at work and still get promoted and, and, and raises?
- 40:33Oh, absolutely.
- 40:35Like, I mean there, yes.
- 40:37The one , this was my, my second divorce happened on this project.
- 40:43The whole entire time I thought I was going to be fired.
- 40:47Like we paid out.
- 40:49I mean, we were in the red, about 400 grand in the red, like not, We spent all the estimated margin and paid an additional 400 grand to finish the project.
- 41:01Wow.
- 41:02And so the entire time I'm thinking like, Man, I'm gonna get fired.
- 41:05And I was working crazy hours just trying to make up wherever I c I mean, just ridiculous.
- 41:13At the end of it, I was divorced.
- 41:16I'd been arrested again for dwi, Like my life was falling apart.
- 41:21And, and I, I remember we had like a debrief with the team and I'm like, Man, I'm sorry.
- 41:26Like, I completely understand if y'all gotta let me to go.
- 41:29And they're like, Let you go.
- 41:30Like, we, like, you're, you're the reason why we didn't lose double that.
- 41:35Like, you, you're getting promoted.
- 41:37I'm like, promoted.
- 41:38What do you, what's like, this was, I don't wanna have to do this to get promoted.
- 41:43Right.
- 41:44But that was, that was the firefighting was what was That's the expectation.
- 41:49Yes.
- 41:49Yes.
- 41:50Similar story.
- 41:51Never been, never been divorced.
- 41:55I'd have some commitment issues, so, but same thing.
- 42:00I've always felt like the, the social or the work pressure on me, I'm just like, I don't get this.
- 42:07I don't, I don't like make this happen and jam and get on people's cases and like, you know, just, just do the, the things that aren't healthy.
- 42:17There aren't, they're not building relationships or they're tearing down.
- 42:21I'm sure I've co I've like contributed to people's.
- 42:26Like they've take, like the, the interaction that we had at work, they've taken that situation home.
- 42:32, and I've been promoted and given raises the whole, this whole time.
- 42:35Yes.
- 42:36Time all along.
- 42:37Like, every time I've been promoted and raised, the next cycle is like, you're, you feel back, you're like, Oh man, I'm getting canned tomorrow.
- 42:45Yep.
- 42:46It's a vicious cycle.
- 42:48Vicious, Yes.
- 42:49Vicious cycle.
- 42:50Yes.
- 42:52And like Alex legit calls out, or is Alex's wife legit calls him out on it and he's like, Damn.
- 42:59He like, I gotta, like, I gotta put some perspective into this.
- 43:04But I will say that, you know, I've worked with for, for many companies and they're all good, good companies, everyone.
- 43:11Yes.
- 43:11But it's at that moment when you make that connection between, is this, like, is this actually worth it?
- 43:20Yeah.
- 43:21And like when you, when you make the decision that now it's not worth it, that's when you move on.
- 43:25This has been, And although companies work for, they're, they're all great, they're all super profitable, unsuccessful, successful.
- 43:33But in that, in that situation where you get put in a box and says, Hey, is this, this situation is worth more than your livelihood.
- 43:44I'll choose my livelihood all day.
- 43:45All day.
- 43:46Yeah.
- 43:46All day.
- 43:47And that I haven't choose, and I haven't made that choice a hundred percent.
- 43:51I'm probably bating less than 500 in that realm.
- 43:55Yeah.
- 43:55But I've written many checks that my relationships can, can't cash.
- 44:01So.
- 44:02Now I do like the concept of like a, like a personal bank account.
- 44:08Yep.
- 44:09Or, or a social bank account or trust bank account, whatever you wanna call it.
- 44:13it's an extreme ownership every time that you go and take a, take a take a withdrawal.
- 44:20It's lowered.
- 44:20The account is lowered.
- 44:22Yes.
- 44:23If you have, your account balance is zero.
- 44:25If you have zero trust, if you have zero relationship, you have zero.
- 44:30Whatever respect, you can't, there's no margin.
- 44:34You can't get credit in a relationship.
- 44:36It's possible.
- 44:37You might, you might be able to, to take a, take a, what is it?
- 44:41A payday loan for a week.
- 44:44High cost.
- 44:45Yeah.
- 44:45The cost.
- 44:46Yeah.
- 44:46It's true.
- 44:47It's, So the payday loan from a financial standpoint is like the, the interest rate is extremely high.
- 44:54And it's the same, the same way with in a social interaction that if you, if you try to get ahead or whatever with nefarious means, or social pressure or stress or use some, you know, masculine behavior in which we're gonna talk about Yep.
- 45:12To do the chest bumping thing.
- 45:14We've all been there.
- 45:15It's ego that only works for a very limited amount of time.
- 45:19So does fear.
- 45:20So does, so does pressure.
- 45:23So yes, Alex legit, Alex's wife legit calls him out on, that's chapter 12.
- 45:28And that plays into the rest of the book because he walks into the next chapter, which is the hike.
- 45:35The famous, but he walks, he walks into that with that in the front of his mind, right?
- 45:41So, yes.
- 45:42And that's very important.
- 45:44And not, man, many people make that connection.
- 45:46And I actually had to read this book many times to make that connection.
- 45:49So that's right in front of his mind.
- 45:51That's like, Oh, I got issues at home.
- 45:54It's like, I'm gonna get fired.
- 45:56I got, They're gonna close a plant like this, gonna ruin this like our, my and this is his hometown and people's livelihoods, and there's people he cares about.
- 46:06Like the pressure is on Alex, man, He's feeling it, but he's still gotta be like a dad to his son, Dave.
- 46:14So why just do chapter 13?
- 46:17Let's do it . There's Do it.
- 46:19I'll do it off my phone.
- 46:20This is awesome.
- 46:21This is awesome.
- 46:21Chapter 13, The, this is DFA hike.
- 46:25Spoiler alert.
- 46:26And if, if you've listened to this point and you haven't read the book, stop now.
- 46:32, read the book.
- 46:33Read the book.
- 46:34Go to Audible.
- 46:35Yes.
- 46:36Because this, now we will like everything before you can kind of be like, Okay, I get it from, from here on out, we're gonna lose people.
- 46:44So please pause.
- 46:47You can always come back to this podcast, , but pause.
- 46:49Go.
- 46:50At least listen to chapter's.
- 46:5213 tw.
- 46:53Yes.
- 46:53So chapter 13 is the Hike.
- 46:55Davies son, wakes Alex up in bed reminding his, his commitment to the Boy Scout troop.
- 47:01I gotta hike 10 miles and then camp overnight.
- 47:06And then hike back 10 miles.
- 47:08So he gets, he gets there and I've only been the the scout.
- 47:15The kid.
- 47:15Not, I haven't ever been like the scout master.
- 47:18If people who are listening or I don't know if you, you've done it.
- 47:22People who work with children.
- 47:23Thank you.
- 47:24No joke, but the, these moments, these hikes, these little learning experiences, I remember they're greatly impactful.
- 47:34So like the pressure's on Yeah.
- 47:36Like these little moments they add up to a person's life.
- 47:40And if they're good, it's reinforcing.
- 47:42If they're bad, they'll, It's the same way.
- 47:44They'll be scarred for life.
- 47:45. So he is like, Oh, I'm worried about my life and my job, but I still gotta be like, the pressure is on, I gotta perform.
- 47:52And all the other parents bail and the scout master, that's not supposed to be their flakes out.
- 47:58So like Alex on his own with a whole troop of boy scouts, and I guess what, what are boy scouts?
- 48:04Like eight, 10.
- 48:06Yeah.
- 48:07So they're, they're, they're young, young boys.
- 48:09And they're, they're, they're wild, wild animals.
- 48:14Yes.
- 48:15You gotta keep 'em in check.
- 48:16So let's, so Alex, he kind of starts to figure it out.
- 48:20He's like, All right, you gotta get 10 miles.
- 48:22It does some quick math in his head.
- 48:24He's, he's trying to math himself outta the situation.
- 48:27Yes.
- 48:27. He goes walking two miles an hour, which is about how fast an average person walks in this rate.
- 48:33We should cover 10 miles in five hours, two miles an hour.
- 48:37That's, that's a brisk walk.
- 48:40You probably do some treadmill work, so you hit that 2.0.
- 48:43It's not hard, but it's not, it's not put putzing around.
- 48:47Right.
- 48:48So we should be able to cover 10 miles in five hours.
- 48:50That is.
- 48:51That's dependent events and trying to Yeah.
- 48:55Map himself outta the situation.
- 48:56It's eight 30 right now.
- 48:58Figure an hour and a half for breaks and lunch, man.
- 49:02We'll get to Devil's Gulch by three o'clock.
- 49:05No sweat.
- 49:06So let's stop here and talk about a glorious phase of construction.
- 49:10It's the part where we set the baseline schedule.
- 49:13It's glorious because it's at the beginning.
- 49:16. Where we all get along.
- 49:19Yep.
- 49:19Excited.
- 49:20Everybody's gonna make money.
- 49:21Opportunity.
- 49:23And it's the articles in the newspaper.
- 49:25Did you see it?
- 49:26It's like, yeah, the news is there.
- 49:28The mayor's gonna show up.
- 49:29The governor.
- 49:30I've had the president come multiple times now.
- 49:33There's just like humble brag there.
- 49:35But yes, , there's, there's ribbons involved, there's shovels, there's all kind of, people are excited.
- 49:40Like it's this feel good time.
- 49:42This, this is, this is exciting.
- 49:45So they call that optimism bias.
- 49:47. Yes.
- 49:48And optimism bias is a cognitive bias.
- 49:52It is a, it's a trick.
- 49:54Your brain.
- 49:55It's a trick.
- 49:56Our brains have tricked us for the entirety of of the known history of, of humankind.
- 50:03it's the tendency for individuals to be overly bullish about the outcomes of planned actions.
- 50:10You ever get that way?
- 50:11Oh, I used to all the time.
- 50:15And like the way I reconciled the fact that the, the outcome didn't happen was because everybody else didn't follow the plan.
- 50:25like, it wasn't my fault, it was everybody else's fault.
- 50:29But now I say, now I should say maybe here in the past three years or so, things are gonna happen the way they're going to happen and creating the conditions to facilitate learning, adaptability, and growth is where I choose to put my energy now.
- 50:47Right?
- 50:47Like if I can focus my energy on creating the conditions for people to build relationships, to learn, to grow, to adapt, we'll get there when we get there now.
- 50:59But my work is different, right?
- 51:00My work has been helping people learn new techniques and new methods and, and form cohesive teams.
- 51:08You can't, I can't put that on a schedule.
- 51:10I mean, I, when I look back and reflect, you know, I've seen some teams, it seems like around the six week mark, they start getting into flow and, and becoming more reliable in, in their communication and their commitments and, and all of that.
- 51:27And I think, I don't know why it's six weeks.
- 51:30I really don't.
- 51:31But that's only true if the team doesn't change , because you put somebody else in there, you take somebody out.
- 51:38The power dynamic shift the whole, like, you almost start all over again.
- 51:43Yeah.
- 51:44But oftentimes, and I'm, Your work is a little bit different than mine.
- 51:48Yep.
- 51:49Oftentimes when we start a project, the experts that do the organizing and, and setting the baseline schedule, like they're, I got some, they're, they're good people named Yeah.
- 52:00Hard workers.
- 52:01And they're incredibly biased.
- 52:04. Yes.
- 52:05And it's not a fault of.
- 52:06It's just, it's just how human, It's natural work.
- 52:09Natural.
- 52:09Yes.
- 52:10So there's another plug, another book Thinking Fast Slow.
- 52:14Yes.
- 52:15Annual Conman.
- 52:16Connie Noble Prize winner.
- 52:18Yeah.
- 52:20We might, we may cover that book in later series.
- 52:23Who knows?
- 52:24Yeah.
- 52:24That one's, that one's Beyond Me.
- 52:26We need need some experts on that one.
- 52:27But it talks about bias.
- 52:30Yep.
- 52:30In his book.
- 52:31And he calls optimism bias when we're excited and we're, we're like, and that's when we, Here's the thing about being excited.
- 52:40This is also the time where we set the baseline schedule.
- 52:43So yes, Alex is doing that.
- 52:45He's like, We're gonna get there at 3:00 PM I'm excited.
- 52:48I'm full of energy.
- 52:49It's eight 30 in the morning.
- 52:50I just ate a delicious breakfast.
- 52:52Yeah.
- 52:53It's, it's cool out.
- 52:55I'm feeling optimism, like I'm feeling some optimism.
- 52:58Like, We got it people.
- 52:59We got it.
- 53:01Yep.
- 53:01Nothing has happened yet.
- 53:02It's just the way it goes.
- 53:04And when we get in the grip of optimism, including experts.
- 53:08We are unaware of that.
- 53:10We're optimistic.
- 53:11And sometimes maybe we are where we, we've become aware that we're like, Hey, we're, they call it the honeymoon phase oftentimes.
- 53:18Yeah.
- 53:18And we make decisions based on an ideal vision of the future.
- 53:23Yes.
- 53:23Rather than on national weighing of realistic gains, loss, losses and probabilities.
- 53:31We get, we're like, Oh, this is awesome.
- 53:33We're gonna have the setup.
- 53:34And we got this, we have this beautiful logistics plans.
- 53:38And they're, sometimes they're animated . Yep.
- 53:41It's just like, this is gonna work perfectly and we're excited and we get.
- 53:46We get that in our brains and it programs our brains.
- 53:50So when we're setting these, the plan, or we're setting the we're making the decision about duration and logic and, you know, all of the things that we're about to go do, We haven't done any of them.
- 54:05We're mentally, we're mentally perished.
- 54:09We're mentally biased.
- 54:11When we make those decisions, that, that, is that terrifying to you?
- 54:14It is me.
- 54:15No.
- 54:16Here's what's terrifying to me, cuz that I think that's a natural thing, right?
- 54:19Like, I mean, here's, I'm gonna take a jab at Jennifer right now.
- 54:23Okay?
- 54:23Cause she's not gonna hear this for a month or so.
- 54:25Anyways, . But you know, we started working on the book and we've been working on it.
- 54:31And we're in the editing phase.
- 54:33We're on the, we're on the home stretch.
- 54:34Like right now, you can order the book.
- 54:36Right now the plumbers edition is out, meaning there's a ton of typos.
- 54:41There's, there's a ton of gaps.
- 54:43The flows jacked up, but we're refining it, right?
- 54:47We're getting the, the grammar and the English and all that punctuation.
- 54:53And so I got super excited because things were clicking along.
- 54:57I didn't anticipate or I didn't account for the realities of the edit.
- 55:03Time is not big.
- 55:05It's the life stuff that keeps happening between Jen, myself, and, and, and Kim who's helping us with the book.
- 55:14Like she has a business.
- 55:15I have a business like it.
- 55:18I didn't account for those.
- 55:19So it's taken longer than I wanted it to take.
- 55:22But what's scary to me is not when people are planning in ideal situations, these fabricated ideal situations, which is what I did.
- 55:32What's scary is there are those experts out there that are putting together a schedule and saying, There's no way this is going to be a nightmare.
- 55:42And somebody within the organization is saying, It's okay.
- 55:46We can, They're going out and making checks that their butt can't cash.
- 55:51They're committing to the client, Yes, we can do it.
- 55:54And everybody that's going to be doing that job is telling them There ain't no way.
- 56:00Yeah.
- 56:00That's the scary part.
- 56:02And they'll do due diligence.
- 56:03They'll go out and we'll, we'll talk to experts with trades and with designers Yes.
- 56:09And through parties.
- 56:11Yes.
- 56:12And the building department and the county.
- 56:14Yes.
- 56:15Right.
- 56:16And we're, we're all incredibly amazed, so we have to understand that.
- 56:21. We underestimate benefits, we underestimate costs.
- 56:25Yep.
- 56:25We involuntarily spin scenarios of success and overlook the potential for mistakes.
- 56:32And miscalculations.
- 56:34It is counterintuitive.
- 56:36. Yes.
- 56:36You know, and I heard Tony Robbins, I think I heard Tony Robbins say it and I'm not sure where it originated, but anyways.
- 56:44Oh, I gotta, I'm digging.
- 56:45I'm digging.
- 56:46Yes.
- 56:47Oh, there it is, man.
- 56:49You got the library ready to I unshakeable.
- 56:51I don't, you're I probably should stop doing this cuz I'm gonna No, it's awesome.
- 56:56It's perfect.
- 56:56Yeah.
- 56:57No, the, the quote I heard was, we overestimate what we can accomplish in a year and we underestimate what we can accomplish in 10.
- 57:08And, and I was like, Oh my God, that is so dead on.
- 57:12Like, I, like, you know, get big ideas and, Oh, I got, I gotta get all this stuff done.
- 57:18Nope.
- 57:18In a year.
- 57:19But if I look back and reflect on the decade, like, holy moly, look at all the stuff that I got done.
- 57:26Right.
- 57:26And, and so it's this, maybe it's that failure to account for all of the stuff that's going to impact my plan, but it, when I look at it over a broader time horizon, those impacts really aren't that big.
- 57:41And I underestimated what I could do cuz I have like, I don't know anybody that really spends a lot of time n maybe excluding business planning, like, as like an individual development plan.
- 57:56What am I going to target a decade down the road?
- 58:00Right, Right.
- 58:01In terms of growth, like I can target income, I can target.
- 58:05A collecting junk, right?
- 58:07Like cars and boats and whatever.
- 58:09And, you know, my fleet of limousines,. But in terms of personal growth, that's not anything I've ever thought about.
- 58:18Like, what am I going, how, how will I better serve in 10 years?
- 58:23To what degree will I impact other human beings in 10 years?
- 58:28Like, that's the question.
- 58:29Yeah, that's, that just blew my mind.
- 58:32, dude, I went off, I went off the real, so I guess I was Tony Robbins, but still.
- 58:35Yeah.
- 58:36Wow.
- 58:38Lost my train of thought, but Yeah, but it's true.
- 58:41It's true.
- 58:42So we set, and it's not to deriv, Preconstruction, man, We've got some great preconstruction.
- 58:47Absolutely.
- 58:48Yeah.
- 58:49They, they can, they can take a napkin sketch and be accurate within like 10, 10 or 15%.
- 58:57That's crazy.
- 58:59So yeah, so pre-construction people are like, Thank you.
- 59:02Is not a easy job.
- 59:04It's completely, and it must be very frustrating oftentimes, but and the reason why is cuz you're working in a highly biased environment.
- 59:11Yep.
- 59:12It's just, and it's designed that way.
- 59:13And if we didn't, you can't say that if we can't make plans and an unbiased environment, it's impossible.
- 59:21Right.
- 59:21It's like impossible.
- 59:22We would never set any goals or set any durations and then it would just be chaos.
- 59:27We have to make those decisions, but we also have to understand according to the goal and according to Daniel here, or Dr.
- 59:34Nobel Prize winner.
- 59:35That you have to design some, you have to understand that, hey, we're being, we're biased here.
- 59:42Oftentimes we might, we might overlook the fact that there might, we might run into problems.
- 59:48Yes, we might have issues or there might be a problem in the supply chain.
- 59:52So we all have to, we have to understand that that's, that's kind of the, that's kind of the point.
- 59:56And that's the point that Alex fails in his initial plan.
- 1:00:01Yes.
- 1:00:01In the hike.
- 1:00:02Totally whiffs on that one.
- 1:00:04But he's gonna learn the hard ways.
- 1:00:06, Yes, he's gonna learn the hard way, but he is gonna learn.
- 1:00:09So let's go back to the book.
- 1:00:10So they're hiking, hiking with children in a forest.
- 1:00:15This has to be terrifying.
- 1:00:16This is the eighties, so Yeah.
- 1:00:18Probably not so much . But you, you're doing a boy scout hike with with a, with a group of boy scouts in there.
- 1:00:27They're hiking.
- 1:00:27You get 'em, you get 'em in the line, and they're making, making the line.
- 1:00:31And he is, Alex is like, after a few minutes, I turn and look back, the columnists of scouts is spread out instead of a yard between boys.
- 1:00:40There are now larger gaps, some larger than others.
- 1:00:44Alex decides by himself, by the way.
- 1:00:46There's no staff sergeants in this in this column, , he assigns the lead scout, Ron, to set the pace.
- 1:00:54He's like, All right, nobody passes, Ron.
- 1:00:57He's got the map.
- 1:00:58Understand everybody understand nobody passes.
- 1:01:00Ron, Ron's in the lead.
- 1:01:02He's our lead, lead scout.
- 1:01:03And then he says, Is this fat kid?
- 1:01:06And he already looks a little winded.
- 1:01:08Yep.
- 1:01:08And he's way in the back behind him.
- 1:01:11Well, he is not all the way in the back.
- 1:01:12Behind the fat kid is the rest of the group.
- 1:01:15And they're stuck because they're walking down a single path.
- 1:01:18Yep.
- 1:01:18He says, What's your name?
- 1:01:20Kid says Herby Herbi.
- 1:01:22Let me let me let me frame Herbi for a minute.
- 1:01:27Number one, he is a human boy scout.
- 1:01:30Yes.
- 1:01:31But he is a different shape than the other boy scouts.
- 1:01:34He's, he's not typical two.
- 1:01:36He's got the same function.
- 1:01:38He's a human boy scout and he's hiking.
- 1:01:40He's got the same function as the other process.
- 1:01:42Steps three.
- 1:01:44He's walking the trail at a different pace.
- 1:01:47And, and Alex describes him, like he would walk and then he would noticeably get tired, so he'd slow down.
- 1:01:55But then the gap would get big and people would be like, Hey, Herby, you're holding us up.
- 1:01:59So we'd run.
- 1:02:00Yep.
- 1:02:01So he is walking at a different pace.
- 1:02:03. Statistically, maybe, perhaps.
- 1:02:05Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:06four.
- 1:02:07He's bogged down with issues.
- 1:02:08He's tired, he's hot, he's heavy, he's bogged down with things.
- 1:02:13He's got this big heavy R act on.
- 1:02:16And the stress.
- 1:02:17Like the stress.
- 1:02:18Yes.
- 1:02:19So others are blaming Herbi.
- 1:02:21Yes.
- 1:02:22Yes.
- 1:02:22For their own.
- 1:02:23So for the source of their own delay.
- 1:02:25And then six Herbi feels that stress.
- 1:02:28Yes.
- 1:02:28And he, he's trying to make up the, the difference, you know, cuz he is getting behind.
- 1:02:34He starts, but running, this is the person who's can't walk.
- 1:02:37I'm overweight, so I, I I can feel the pain.
- 1:02:40You're like, Oh, I gotta like, pick up the pace.
- 1:02:42And you start running, but you're already tired.
- 1:02:44So it's like . Or you're a runner.
- 1:02:47Yes.
- 1:02:47Right.
- 1:02:48So do you, you try to maintain a consistent pace, Very consistent.
- 1:02:52Why is that important to, to conserve?
- 1:02:55Because the speeding up and the slowing down exhausts my energy.
- 1:03:00Like I learned the last marathon I ran, I discovered that when I listened to music, my pace varies based on the music.
- 1:03:11I didn't, I wasn't my coach at the time, she told me, she's like, Jessie, why do you do that?
- 1:03:14I'm like, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 1:03:15Let's look at your times.
- 1:03:16I'm like, Oh wow.
- 1:03:17So the last one, I listened to a book for the first 20 miles and my pace was solid, like mile after mile after mile after mile.
- 1:03:28And, and it keeps me from speeding up and slowing down and speeding up and slowing down because even though I was slowing down, it's still costing the energy.
- 1:03:38You're telling me that the fluctuation is making you less efficient?
- 1:03:42What's that?
- 1:03:43The fluctuations are making you less efficient.
- 1:03:46Yes sir.
- 1:03:46That's exactly what I'm saying.
- 1:03:48We just prove a theory, perhaps, perhaps.
- 1:03:50Anyways, . Yes.
- 1:03:51Thank you.
- 1:03:52I'm glad.
- 1:03:52I'm glad you're a marathon runner.
- 1:03:54Cause I was gonna use that analogy, but I'm like, you can't, I can't.
- 1:03:57Like I don't have that . Oh yeah, . So we start, so back to the book and back to Alex and he goes, We start out again.
- 1:04:04We haven't gone 30 yards before.
- 1:04:07I notice gaps starting all over again.
- 1:04:10Damnit, we've gotta be running and stopping all day long.
- 1:04:13If this keeps up, half the troop is liable to get lost if we can't stay together.
- 1:04:18Yeah.
- 1:04:19These children, these are people's children and they're getting stretched out in the wilderness.
- 1:04:26Oh man.
- 1:04:27Oh man.
- 1:04:28So Alex does rapid retrospective.
- 1:04:30He's a good manager.
- 1:04:31He knows when to, he knows when to do retrospective, which I actually give him major pro prompts.
- 1:04:38So he goes, he stops it.
- 1:04:40I don't know if he stops, but he's doing this in his brain.
- 1:04:42He's like, every time Herbie gets a step behind, he runs for a step, extra step.
- 1:04:47Got it.
- 1:04:47Mental note.
- 1:04:48I see Davey slow down for a few seconds adjusting his pack straps.
- 1:04:53If one of the boys takes a step that's half happening shorter, then the lead scout takes the length of the whole line could get affected, right?
- 1:05:02Yep.
- 1:05:02Because if, if the lead scout is taking regular steps and and somebody behind them is taking a shorter step Step after step after step after step gets, It's shorter or I guess the line gets longer.
- 1:05:16Don't these minor differences though, Don't they average out?
- 1:05:20He's asking himself this question.
- 1:05:22Yeah.
- 1:05:22And he said, Can I, at the end of line shorten the overall overall length of the line?
- 1:05:28Cuz Alex eventually he goes to the back of the line.
- 1:05:30It's gotta like focuses, right?
- 1:05:32It's gotta looking all the children.
- 1:05:34He's like, if, if I, I can, I can shorten the gap because I'm at the end of line.
- 1:05:40Like I can, I'm the caboose.
- 1:05:42But I, I'm the last in line, so I can only catch up to the, the kid in front of me so he can only shorten like limited amount.
- 1:05:50So it makes a connection to the plan's production.
- 1:05:54He goes, each of the troops is a set of dependent events.
- 1:05:58Does it matter what order we're we're in?
- 1:06:00We have dependent events.
- 1:06:02No matter if we switch the order of the boys.
- 1:06:04Right.
- 1:06:05If you put Davey in the middle, you put 'em.
- 1:06:07That's just everybody is walking single file.
- 1:06:10We can't change, nobody can pass each other cuz you can't.
- 1:06:14I suppose you could, but you'd spend more energy.
- 1:06:17But.
- 1:06:18Going through the jungle.
- 1:06:20Wherever this tal hike is happening.
- 1:06:24So that's throughput.
- 1:06:25So it's like from the front lead scout to the end of Alex, the time it takes for that entire line of, of scouts to move past a single location that's throughput.
- 1:06:38Yes.
- 1:06:39So what about the amount of trail between Ron and me, the lead scouts, Ron, what's, what's the amount of trail that's inventory?
- 1:06:47Yes.
- 1:06:47It has to be inventory.
- 1:06:49Ron's consuming raw materials.
- 1:06:51Ron, lead scout raw trail in front of him.
- 1:06:54He's, he's consuming the raw trail.
- 1:06:56Yes.
- 1:06:57And then we all process it behind it.
- 1:06:59He's starting to make these connections Yes.
- 1:07:01To his factory operational expenses, whatever, lets us turn inventory into, into throughput.
- 1:07:10So operational expense in a hike or operational expense in your in your, what's it?
- 1:07:1526.2 miles.
- 1:07:176.2.
- 1:07:18Yep.
- 1:07:19That's your energy.
- 1:07:20Yes.
- 1:07:21That's what you expand.
- 1:07:22You expand.
- 1:07:25Energy is probably glucose some something.
- 1:07:27And you can't quantify that model except that I know Alex knows that he's getting tired and he could probably see fatigue in, in the scouts.
- 1:07:37Yep.
- 1:07:37Right.
- 1:07:38. It's like, that's, that's a hard one cuz it's, it's a whole bunch of other factors cuz it's human condition, but people eventually you get tired, You cannot hide for infinity.
- 1:07:47You cannot run Who's the ultra-marathoner?
- 1:07:51Oh my God, there's a bunch of them out.
- 1:07:53Steve Turner would bring Turner the trades.
- 1:07:56Yeah.
- 1:07:56250.
- 1:07:57I think he just ran like a 250 mile ultra-marathon.
- 1:08:01And guess what?
- 1:08:02He did have to sleep.
- 1:08:04Yeah, you have to sleep.
- 1:08:05Yes.
- 1:08:05I, I know, I also know a couple older marathoners and Yeah, you have to stop to eat.
- 1:08:11Yeah.
- 1:08:11It's like, it's a whole process, but it's the, if you're consuming that trail, So just imagine Steve Turner running, man.
- 1:08:19Like actually I can't imagine like you, like you were human to me.
- 1:08:23Yes.
- 1:08:24But you're consuming inventory in front of you and your operational expense is your energy.
- 1:08:30So to consume 250 miles, you gotta you're gonna expand all the energy in your reserves and you have to sleep to replenish and also probably eat food and Right.
- 1:08:44So that's all operational expense.
- 1:08:46That's really cool.
- 1:08:47So like, like the goal makes the link, if the distance between Ron and me is expanding, it can only mean that inventory is, is increasing.
- 1:08:56Cause if, if the trail, the length of the trail between number one and number last is expanding.
- 1:09:02That's all inventory.
- 1:09:03Yeah.
- 1:09:03And throughput's my rate of walking.
- 1:09:05So if it's, if it's two miles per hour, that's throughput.
- 1:09:09We're gonna, it takes us two miles per hour.
- 1:09:12, which is in, But here's the thing about throughput.
- 1:09:14It's influenced by fluctuation.
- 1:09:17So the slower the average fluctuations accumulate, they do, they, they add up and they're, it's like, it's like the scout in front and the scout behind them takes an inch.
- 1:09:27A half inch.
- 1:09:28. Let's say it's an inch.
- 1:09:29Just to make it easy.
- 1:09:31Yes.
- 1:09:31After 12 steps, that's a foot.
- 1:09:33Right.
- 1:09:34So if you take a, if you take an inch shorter step every time, and if you're walking at the same rate, it's a foot longer and that adds up.
- 1:09:42And that's one scout.
- 1:09:44Yep.
- 1:09:44And I guess it could, the scout behind him could make up that house, but then he runs into him and then he has to slow down and gets, gets all screwed up.
- 1:09:53And one of the reasons why I left San Francisco Bay area was because of this phenomenon.
- 1:09:58Yeah.
- 1:09:59You've ever driven across the Bay Bridge either direction.
- 1:10:03You get to experience this constantly.
- 1:10:05Yeah.
- 1:10:06Or even if you're in the use bart, But the person in front of you, they tap their brakes, you tap their brakes, the person behind you taps their brakes.
- 1:10:15It's, it compounds.
- 1:10:17And all of a sudden we're, we're at a complete standstill.
- 1:10:20Yes.
- 1:10:21We're not moving even on eight 80 South is one of the reasons why I moved to a place where I can, like Charlotte, like from here to here is about 15 minutes.
- 1:10:31Nice.
- 1:10:32No matter, I mean, at the worst of times to get from this, the, the eastern part, I guess this would be the western part of the city to the eastern part of the city is about 15 minutes shoot down North Tryon Street.
- 1:10:45But that's statistical fluctuation and it screws stuff up.
- 1:10:50Yep.
- 1:10:50It screws it up.
- 1:10:52And you worked in the trades.
- 1:10:55Yes.
- 1:10:55So, you know this in a, in a work situation more than me.
- 1:11:00Yes.
- 1:11:00I've only, I've only been a supervisor, so I can't, I've never like sat or been in it from a work standpoint.
- 1:11:07So like how does it feel when you're in this.
- 1:11:11Go stop.
- 1:11:11Go stop.
- 1:11:12Hurry up.
- 1:11:13Slow down, hurry up.
- 1:11:14Slow down.
- 1:11:15I'm, I'm the guy I guess doing the Hurry up.
- 1:11:17Slow down.
- 1:11:18Hurry up.
- 1:11:18Slow down.
- 1:11:19Yep.
- 1:11:19So how does it feel as a human being to be in this phenomenon?
- 1:11:23It feels you.
- 1:11:25Well two answers.
- 1:11:26So one, you, I felt helpless, right?
- 1:11:30Because no matter what I do, I'm going to be accused of being behind.
- 1:11:35I'm gonna be the, because I'm gonna be the bottleneck because of this fluctuation.
- 1:11:40And when I'm the bottleneck, it's all my fault, even though it's not my fault.
- 1:11:45And so when I say, Hey, I know that your schedule says we're supposed to be sheetrocking tomorrow, but it also said I was supposed to start in Wall Ruffin four days ago, and I only started two days ago.
- 1:11:58All of those are facts.
- 1:12:00The response I get is, I don't want your excuses.
- 1:12:04Like these are not excuses, these are facts.
- 1:12:07. Like, so that's, that's one.
- 1:12:10There's this help like defeated helpless, like, okay, I'm just gonna not even argue with this person.
- 1:12:15That's ignoring reality.
- 1:12:18Now when I started paying attention to the dollars that we were spending on labor, that was a whole nother level of stress.
- 1:12:26Operational expense.
- 1:12:28Yes.
- 1:12:29Because now I'm like, Oh my God, I got six people here.
- 1:12:33Our crew rate is 38 bucks an hour, and we're not gonna be producing anything, so we're gonna go get busy and do stuff.
- 1:12:43But I know production, my production rate, we just blew it.
- 1:12:47And if this goes on for more than four hours, it's gonna be held to recover.
- 1:12:53And because Herby, you gotta run back.
- 1:12:55You gotta run, I gotta run back.
- 1:12:57Yeah, no, we're gonna work super late and, and here's like a really, really disrespectful way to handle that.
- 1:13:03We're gonna work late, We're gonna pull a Herby and Sprint to catch up.
- 1:13:07So we're gonna work till 7: 00 PM tonight, which is overtime.
- 1:13:11So we're gonna work till 7: And then I'm gonna get a call from my project manager that tells me, Hey, let everybody go home early on Friday because we don't have overtime in the budget.
- 1:13:20So we're gonna work till 7: And it's like negative on that one.
- 1:13:22So we're gonna work till 7: Like we just made them cancel, Stand up their wives, stand up, their kids, cancel their plans, and now we're going to say, go home early.
- 1:13:31So we're gonna work till 7: Like, no sir, that is not okay.
- 1:13:34So we're gonna work till 7: So that's what it feels like.
- 1:13:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:13:36So we're gonna work till 7: And they've probably been like, Hey, we're gonna work late all week.
- 1:13:39So we're gonna work till 7: I'm already canceled my Friday night plans.
- 1:13:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:13:42So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:13:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes sir.
- 1:13:43So we're gonna work till 7: Yes sir.
- 1:13:44So we're gonna work till 7: It, it's like not a good deal.
- 1:13:48So we're gonna work till 7: So I learned how to mitigate that and yeah, I had a, I would often tell people like, sometimes a butt chewing is worth $10,000 because they would want me to go, I'd get there.
- 1:14:00So we're gonna work till 7: You need to be out here schedule.
- 1:14:02So we're gonna work till 7: You're supposed to start today.
- 1:14:03So we're gonna work till 7: Okay.
- 1:14:03So we're gonna work till 7: So I would show up by myself and like, What are you doing?
- 1:14:06So we're gonna work till 7: Like you're supposed, where's your crew at?
- 1:14:07So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I, I'm going here to check to see if you're actually ready for me, , if you're not ready for me, I'm not bringing a crew out here cuz I'm already setting myself up for failure.
- 1:14:19So we're gonna work till 7: And the emails would fly and the threats would happen and I would coordinate to mobilize when I could see that they were going to be ready.
- 1:14:28So we're gonna work till 7: Because at the very least, when the team showed up, they were gonna be able to produce, they weren't gonna be doing busy work.
- 1:14:36So we're gonna work till 7: And, and that, that helped me maintain trust with my team.
- 1:14:41So we're gonna work till 7: But I got to get my butt chewed.
- 1:14:43So we're gonna work till 7: But it saved us $10,000 in lost labor, showing up, pitching washers until whoever was ahead of me got their stuff done.
- 1:14:51So we're gonna work till 7: Cause of dependent events.
- 1:14:54So we're gonna work till 7: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:54So we're gonna work till 7: . So you just got nailed and got yelled at from two angles.
- 1:14:58So we're gonna work till 7: You got behind.
- 1:15:00So we're gonna work till 7: So you're, you're getting it from Thomas the gc.
- 1:15:03So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:15:04So we're gonna work till 7: And then you're getting from the home office Yep.
- 1:15:07So we're gonna work till 7: Or running, running over your operational expense and they make a executive decision to shut off the work that you've already planned.
- 1:15:17So we're gonna work till 7: You guys, you're literally trapped.
- 1:15:19So we're gonna work till 7: That's a hundred percent.
- 1:15:20So we're gonna work till 7: God, that's, that's a, that's a bad spot, dude.
- 1:15:24So we're gonna work till 7: You know, I think, I still think the foreman role is the worst role.
- 1:15:29So we're gonna work till 7: The trade foreman role is the worst role in construction because that this situation that you just painted, the GC hates me.
- 1:15:38So we're gonna work till 7: It's mad at me.
- 1:15:39So we're gonna work till 7: My office is on my butt, and now my team is not happy with me.
- 1:15:46So we're gonna work till 7: Like no matter what.
- 1:15:47So we're gonna work till 7: Oh, yeah.
- 1:15:47So we're gonna work till 7: I didn't even think about that.
- 1:15:49So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:15:49So we're gonna work till 7: Everybody is, I'm everybody's, I'm the villain in that entire situation for every stakeholder, and I had nothing to do with it.
- 1:16:00So we're gonna work till 7: You're in a system, right?
- 1:16:01So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:16:02So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:16:03So we're gonna work till 7: And you're in the middle.
- 1:16:06So we're gonna work till 7: You're her.
- 1:16:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, Yes.
- 1:16:08So we're gonna work till 7: Herbi all day long.
- 1:16:09So we're gonna work till 7: Herbi feels stress.
- 1:16:11So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:16:12So we're gonna work till 7: He feels it and he tries to make up with it.
- 1:16:14So we're gonna work till 7: The only way he, it's only way he can by working harder.
- 1:16:18So we're gonna work till 7: But it's actually, it works against Herbi because he gets more tired.
- 1:16:23So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:16:23So we're gonna work till 7: Cause his heart rate goes up even though he wants to work harder, he's trying harder.
- 1:16:29So we're gonna work till 7: It, it makes it hard.
- 1:16:30So we're gonna work till 7: It it like he's stuck.
- 1:16:32So we're gonna work till 7: The only thing that you can do makes it worse.
- 1:16:36So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:16:36So we're gonna work till 7: Do you think that contributes to mental Oh my god, Thomas?
- 1:16:40So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:16:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:16:41So we're gonna work till 7: Mental, mental problems self medication, the whole thing.
- 1:16:47So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:16:47So we're gonna work till 7: 100%.
- 1:16:48So we're gonna work till 7: Like, you know, there was one, the very last project that I was on that I took over, cuz at the time, my part of my responsibility was assessing financial forecast and labor forecast from the superintendent.
- 1:17:01So we're gonna work till 7: And I would assess like, how, how close are they?
- 1:17:05So we're gonna work till 7: And when they were way off, like, oh, oh flag, let me go see what's going on.
- 1:17:09So we're gonna work till 7: So I went out to the project and it was in bad, bad, bad shape.
- 1:17:13So we're gonna work till 7: We ended up finishing, like the whole entire project was, went about five months over schedule.
- 1:17:19So we're gonna work till 7: And there weren't any new design.
- 1:17:21So we're gonna work till 7: Like it was just because of just a horrible situation.
- 1:17:25So we're gonna work till 7: So at that point in time, I was, I was dating an amazing woman and I called her and I said, Hey, I'm gonna be taking over this project, so I am not going to be as available as I have been.
- 1:17:39So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I'm gonna be almost not available.
- 1:17:42So we're gonna work till 7: And she said, Okay.
- 1:17:44So we're gonna work till 7: In my head that meant.
- 1:17:46So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not going to call you or text you for a couple of months, but only in my head.
- 1:17:50So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:17:51So we're gonna work till 7: Because in her mind she's thinking, Well, you know, maybe we won't go out every during the week and hang out.
- 1:17:55So we're gonna work till 7: No, it was completely gone.
- 1:17:57So we're gonna work till 7: So three months later, four months later, once we got some light at the end of the tunnel, I call her and I know like, Oh, she's probably gonna be mad.
- 1:18:06So we're gonna work till 7: And she was mad I hurt her.
- 1:18:08So we're gonna work till 7: And she asked me, she's like, Jesse, I don't like, I understand, but I really don't understand why you had to cut me off completely.
- 1:18:17So we're gonna work till 7: Like you weren't working 24 hours a day.
- 1:18:21So we're gonna work till 7: And I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:18:22So we're gonna work till 7: And I knew the answer.
- 1:18:24So we're gonna work till 7: The answer was because I was going to be swimming in failure every single hour of every single day until we finish that project.
- 1:18:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:35So we're gonna work till 7: The only thing you can do, just like Herbie, the only thing that you can do to remedy the situation makes your personal situation completely worse.
- 1:18:44So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, absolutely.
- 1:18:45So we're gonna work till 7: That was it.
- 1:18:46So we're gonna work till 7: That was it.
- 1:18:47So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:18:48So we're gonna work till 7: And that every, there's hundreds of people, thousands of people in that situation right now.
- 1:18:53So we're gonna work till 7: Millions.
- 1:18:54So we're gonna work till 7: Millions.
- 1:18:54So we're gonna work till 7: Millions.
- 1:18:55So we're gonna work till 7: Millions.
- 1:18:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:56So we're gonna work till 7: There's 11 million people in construction.
- 1:18:58So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:59So we're gonna work till 7: At least 1 million of those are in that role.
- 1:19:02So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:19:03So we're gonna work till 7: . Yep.
- 1:19:04So we're gonna work till 7: So think about that.
- 1:19:05So we're gonna work till 7: The experience, the foreman who I have worked with, Yeah.
- 1:19:08So we're gonna work till 7: They all have this, this guard armor.
- 1:19:13So we're gonna work till 7: All, everyone of them.
- 1:19:14So we're gonna work till 7: Some have less, some have more.
- 1:19:17So we're gonna work till 7: And there's, I, I know all the combinations to Yeah.
- 1:19:21So we're gonna work till 7: To break through it.
- 1:19:21So we're gonna work till 7: Well, not all of them, but I know most of them.
- 1:19:24So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:24So we're gonna work till 7: But That is real.
- 1:19:28So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:19:29So we're gonna work till 7: I haven't experienced that.
- 1:19:30So we're gonna work till 7: Cause I've never been in that position.
- 1:19:32So we're gonna work till 7: I skipped it.
- 1:19:33So we're gonna work till 7: I skipped it.
- 1:19:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:34So we're gonna work till 7: Cause I've only been in general construction, so I don't understand.
- 1:19:37So we're gonna work till 7: I can only emphasize, but I work with for foreman, for person, whatever you wanna call them.
- 1:19:43So we're gonna work till 7: People who run crews who they don't run a project, they run crews.
- 1:19:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:19:49So we're gonna work till 7: And they are, they're in this super vulnerable position.
- 1:19:53So we're gonna work till 7: Herbi.
- 1:19:53So we're gonna work till 7: They're herbi.
- 1:19:54So we're gonna work till 7: And if you are herbi, it sucks.
- 1:19:57So we're gonna work till 7: And the only thing that you can do makes the situation even worse.
- 1:20:01So we're gonna work till 7: . So Herby needs some help.
- 1:20:03So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:20:04So we're gonna work till 7: He needs some help.
- 1:20:05So we're gonna work till 7: He's gonna get it here.
- 1:20:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:20:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:20:07So we're gonna work till 7: He's gonna get it.
- 1:20:07So we're gonna work till 7: But I wanna, I I really wanted to focus on Thank you for sharing that situation because that is the bullshit Yes.
- 1:20:16So we're gonna work till 7: That contributes to suicide.
- 1:20:18So we're gonna work till 7: And it's fleeting.
- 1:20:18So we're gonna work till 7: It's, it's it's little teeny.
- 1:20:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:20:21So we're gonna work till 7: Tiny cuts.
- 1:20:24So we're gonna work till 7: And I was having this conversation with my, my father two days ago, and he, he was he's a veteran.
- 1:20:32So we're gonna work till 7: He was in Vietnam.
- 1:20:34So we're gonna work till 7: He experienced combat.
- 1:20:35So we're gonna work till 7: We experienced, he experienced stress.
- 1:20:38So we're gonna work till 7: I was like, I can't, I've never experienced that.
- 1:20:41So we're gonna work till 7: I've never experienced that amount of stress.
- 1:20:43So we're gonna work till 7: I've never experienced a situation where not only was my life at stake, but I also like had to be in a place where I had to fight back and be Yeah.
- 1:20:55So we're gonna work till 7: And be present with that and be comfortable with that.
- 1:20:58So we're gonna work till 7: I've never experienced that.
- 1:21:00So we're gonna work till 7: So those who have done that, like.
- 1:21:03So we're gonna work till 7: Seriously salute.
- 1:21:04So we're gonna work till 7: In construction though?
- 1:21:06So we're gonna work till 7: In that form and slide.
- 1:21:08So we're gonna work till 7: It's different in your, And I haven't, I I was trying to explain this, I was like, it's different.
- 1:21:14So we're gonna work till 7: It's not that level of, of trauma maybe.
- 1:21:18So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:19So we're gonna work till 7: But it compounds.
- 1:21:20So we're gonna work till 7: And if it's year over year, year over year, year over year, year over year.
- 1:21:25So we're gonna work till 7: And it's your job, it's your livelihood, it's your identity.
- 1:21:27So we're gonna work till 7: It's, it's everything.
- 1:21:29So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:29So we're gonna work till 7: It's way worse.
- 1:21:30So we're gonna work till 7: What do you think about that?
- 1:21:31So we're gonna work till 7: I know that it's horrible because it's, because it just, it's like what's the things in PAs, stalagmites and stag?
- 1:21:38So we're gonna work till 7: Like it's just coding of calcium and it's just year over year.
- 1:21:43So we're gonna work till 7: They just, it just keeps growing and it just weighs on you and it weighs on your psychology and it weighs in your health and your sleep and your relationships.
- 1:21:54So we're gonna work till 7: It just, it just Yes.
- 1:21:56So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:21:57So we're gonna work till 7: It, it, it wears you down and it's not as, It's not as, I, I, I, and I haven't experienced either, so I can only empathize, but I was trying to explain it and because he hasn't worked in the trades.
- 1:22:11So we're gonna work till 7: He has, he doesn't work in construction.
- 1:22:13So we're gonna work till 7: He's retired from Right.
- 1:22:14So we're gonna work till 7: But he has experienced combat.
- 1:22:16So we're gonna work till 7: So we were trying to like figure out like, what's the difference?
- 1:22:20So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:22:20So we're gonna work till 7: And I was like, It's, it's year over year, over year, over year, over year.
- 1:22:25So we're gonna work till 7: And it's slowly, wheres you down until you can't cope anymore And you, you're now Herby.
- 1:22:32So we're gonna work till 7: Anything that you do only makes this situation worse.
- 1:22:35So we're gonna work till 7: And you know it, but the way the system is designed, What else are you like?
- 1:22:41So we're gonna work till 7: That's all you, You can't do anything else.
- 1:22:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:22:43So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:22:43So we're gonna work till 7: Need help.
- 1:22:44So we're gonna work till 7: That's you need help.
- 1:22:46So we're gonna work till 7: Let's go back to the book.
- 1:22:46So we're gonna work till 7: That, that for me.
- 1:22:49So we're gonna work till 7: I wanna help.
- 1:22:50So we're gonna work till 7: I want to help.
- 1:22:51So we're gonna work till 7: And, and you So do you So does a very growing community.
- 1:22:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:22:56So we're gonna work till 7: That's so, the, the no BS with Jen, That's the bs.
- 1:23:00So we're gonna work till 7: It's the, it's the, it's the erosion of, it's the every single day.
- 1:23:07So we're gonna work till 7: It's why we do a daily huddle, because I don't want another day of eroding someone's psychic.
- 1:23:14So we're gonna work till 7: I want them, I wanna tell them everything right here and right now.
- 1:23:17So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:23:18So we're gonna work till 7: . So so they'll go back to the book and so the slower the average fluctuations accumulate, they work their way back to the end of the line, which means I have to slow down if I was Alex.
- 1:23:29So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:23:29So we're gonna work till 7: All of those statistical fluctuation.
- 1:23:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:23:32So we're gonna work till 7: They add up and they add up.
- 1:23:34So we're gonna work till 7: Where do they add up at the end of the line.
- 1:23:36So we're gonna work till 7: So no work workers ERs, painters, painters, poor guys, electricians, people who work at the, in the finished trades.
- 1:23:45So we're gonna work till 7: Oh yeah.
- 1:23:46So we're gonna work till 7: We need to have Veterans Day for finished trades.
- 1:23:48So we're gonna work till 7: Seriously?
- 1:23:49So we're gonna work till 7: Because you feel the pressure and like it it's already on, on the day that you show up Yes.
- 1:23:57So we're gonna work till 7: There to install the carpet Yep.
- 1:23:59So we're gonna work till 7: Or to polish the concrete floors because Herbie's already down is damage.
- 1:24:04So we're gonna work till 7: He's rolled through, bro.
- 1:24:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:24:07So we're gonna work till 7: So, so, and the reason why is because relative to the growth of inventory, the spreading out of the, of the, of the the troops throughput for the entire system.
- 1:24:19So we're gonna work till 7: It goes down the rate.
- 1:24:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:24:21So we're gonna work till 7: You're no longer going two miles per hour.
- 1:24:24So we're gonna work till 7: You're going like less than that.
- 1:24:26So we're gonna work till 7: If you, if you, if you take your overall throughput and the, So here's the reason why projects rarely finish on time against its original agreed upon date.
- 1:24:38So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not saying projects don't finish on time.
- 1:24:41So we're gonna work till 7: Cause we do, we finish, we really try.
- 1:24:43So we're gonna work till 7: I'm company I work for try to finish on time, but problems happen and we have to make adjustments and that's just how the world works.
- 1:24:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:24:50So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 1:24:51So we're gonna work till 7: And so that's how CPM works as well.
- 1:24:53So we're gonna work till 7: That's okay.
- 1:24:54So we're gonna work till 7: But we also have to understand and design in that, hey, there's gonna be problems, there's gonna be statistical fluctuations and we need to have a system that incorporates that.
- 1:25:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:25:07So we're gonna work till 7: That's harder.
- 1:25:08So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:25:09So we're gonna work till 7: But that's the lesson that, that, that we learned from Herbes Hike.
- 1:25:13So we're gonna work till 7: And that's the most important lesson in this entire book.
- 1:25:16So we're gonna work till 7: So spoiler alert . Yeah.
- 1:25:18So we're gonna work till 7: Herbie's Hike is the most known lesson taught by the goal.
- 1:25:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's Herby is the slowest walker.
- 1:25:24So we're gonna work till 7: The goal for the whole troop is to finish the hike.
- 1:25:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:25:27So we're gonna work till 7: But the try, but the troop does not finish until Herbi, The slowest Walker finishes.
- 1:25:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, sir.
- 1:25:33So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:25:34So we're gonna work till 7: It is a simple case study.
- 1:25:36So we're gonna work till 7: Independent events with statistical fluctuations.
- 1:25:39So we're gonna work till 7: It's the same thing.
- 1:25:40So we're gonna work till 7: We don't finish the project until the, the tile is set and cured and routed and, and and sealed and we set.
- 1:25:49So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:25:50So we're gonna work till 7: And you're a plumber, so you're always waiting on the tile guys.
- 1:25:52So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:25:53So we're gonna work till 7: Oh yeah.
- 1:25:54So we're gonna work till 7: To set all the, the China, I call China.
- 1:25:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:25:56So we're gonna work till 7: But it's all the porcelain.
- 1:25:57So we're gonna work till 7: But you feel it, You feel.
- 1:26:00So we're gonna work till 7: You feel the pressure?
- 1:26:02So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:26:02So we're gonna work till 7: And the pressure over time leads to, for me, I wasn't, I didn't feel it.
- 1:26:09So we're gonna work till 7: I was usually giving the pressure.
- 1:26:11So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:26:11So we're gonna work till 7: And like, listen, I'm, I've been promoted many times.
- 1:26:16So we're gonna work till 7: I'm still not the prime decider of the project . Right, Right.
- 1:26:22So we're gonna work till 7: So I can't like change the course of the schedule.
- 1:26:27So we're gonna work till 7: I can't, I'm sorry.
- 1:26:28So we're gonna work till 7: I wish, I really try.
- 1:26:29So we're gonna work till 7: We have conversations, We do make adjustments, but I can't, still can't make, So even as let's say a general superintendent, there's still like, they're the number one person on the organizational chart in terms of like field operations, but they're not the primary decision maker.
- 1:26:48So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:26:49So we're gonna work till 7: In terms of like, decisions.
- 1:26:51So we're gonna work till 7: So even then as, even as the, the highest field operation person in terms of like decision making, you don't have complete agency of your project Yep.
- 1:27:03So we're gonna work till 7: because you have other dependent events.
- 1:27:06So we're gonna work till 7: The design is incomplete or there's a permit issue, or is a payment issue, or there's a backlog with a nickel mine and we can't mine nickel in Eastern Europe because of a geopolitical situation happening.
- 1:27:21So we're gonna work till 7: Even at those positions, you still, you still feel the heat, you feel the pressure, you feel like Herbie.
- 1:27:28So we're gonna work till 7: And it weighs on you.
- 1:27:30So we're gonna work till 7: And it did for me.
- 1:27:31So we're gonna work till 7: Hell yeah.
- 1:27:31So we're gonna work till 7: Absolutely.
- 1:27:32So we're gonna work till 7: And I, I controlled it with a whole bunch of controlling behavior, numbing trying to like like distract yourself with other stuff.
- 1:27:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:27:41So we're gonna work till 7: Or for me, like I get crazy with Lane because it's like, Oh, I can check all this stuff out and like not have to face reality.
- 1:27:49So we're gonna work till 7: If we understand two concepts from this book and from the hike dependent events, scout one, scout two scout, three scout, four scout, five scout in minus one.
- 1:28:02So we're gonna work till 7: Like Right, like total throughput requires from scout one to scout last.
- 1:28:08So we're gonna work till 7: That's your entire throughput.
- 1:28:09So we're gonna work till 7: So the rate is determined upon how Well, number one number last go through Yes.
- 1:28:16So we're gonna work till 7: Throughput, operational, expensive, your energy, that's everything that you spend to move that inventory through the length of the trail.
- 1:28:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:28:27So we're gonna work till 7: The length of , of, of your, of time, I guess in this case, that's your inventory.
- 1:28:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:28:34So we're gonna work till 7: And so if your inventory is ever expanding that your throughput will will inverse dive.
- 1:28:40So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:28:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:28:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:28:42So we're gonna work till 7: So I'm gonna talk, tell a story about my love hate relationship with self checkout . And then I already told the story about commercial airplanes.
- 1:28:52So we're gonna work till 7: And by the way, how do you get off of freaking commercial airplanes?
- 1:28:54So we're gonna work till 7: You get off like Army Rangers, all the Ds get off and columns.
- 1:28:59So we're gonna work till 7: All right.
- 1:28:59So we're gonna work till 7: ? Yes.
- 1:29:00So we're gonna work till 7: The hell off the plane.
- 1:29:01So we're gonna work till 7: If you're next in the aisle, go.
- 1:29:03So we're gonna work till 7: If you're the third one and you wait . Yes, we can move fast.
- 1:29:06So we're gonna work till 7: Anyways, get off, I'll get off my commercial airplanes because, and the reason why I I thought I was crazy because that used to give me anxiety.
- 1:29:17So we're gonna work till 7: Like being in self checkout or even just normal checkout, you get behind somebody and I would, I feel anxiety.
- 1:29:25So we're gonna work till 7: I like, I get super uncomfortable.
- 1:29:28So we're gonna work till 7: . Yeah.
- 1:29:28So we're gonna work till 7: And, and the reason why, if you, if there's no line or if you're in first class Right.
- 1:29:34So we're gonna work till 7: Feels good.
- 1:29:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:35So we're gonna work till 7: Is why, cuz there's no dependent events.
- 1:29:38So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:39So we're gonna work till 7: Somebody's like you, you get on plane first, they hand you a drink.
- 1:29:44So we're gonna work till 7: there's an attendant just for you that's comfortable.
- 1:29:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:29:48So we're gonna work till 7: And it's the same thing if you're in a line and self checkout and there's, there's, let's say you go to self checkout and it's 10 o'clock at night at Home Depot, there's like 12 stands.
- 1:29:58So we're gonna work till 7: They're all open, man.
- 1:30:00So we're gonna work till 7: You can, you can breeze through.
- 1:30:01So we're gonna work till 7: No.
- 1:30:01So we're gonna work till 7: Sway.
- 1:30:02So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:30:02So we're gonna work till 7: However, dependent events.
- 1:30:05So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:30:05So we're gonna work till 7: If you're forced to behind somebody with complications, Yes.
- 1:30:09So we're gonna work till 7: More than, more complications than you have, you're forced.
- 1:30:12So we're gonna work till 7: That means you're dependent.
- 1:30:13So we're gonna work till 7: And if you can, if you, and especially in self checkout, if someone is unfamiliar with the system being like, where do you scan the thing and you're like standing there, you're like, like you're feeling.
- 1:30:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:30:27So we're gonna work till 7: I get my anxiety gets, it gets, I get triggered.
- 1:30:30So we're gonna work till 7: And for me, I feel constrained.
- 1:30:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:30:34So we're gonna work till 7: And if, if you've ever been physically constrained, sounds like you have maybe one or couple times with law enforcement.
- 1:30:41So we're gonna work till 7: Oh, several times.
- 1:30:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:30:43So we're gonna work till 7: If you're physically constrained it's a very stressful situation.
- 1:30:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:30:49So we're gonna work till 7: And I feel that way with my anxiety.
- 1:30:51So we're gonna work till 7: I feel that way mentally.
- 1:30:53So we're gonna work till 7: I feel physically constrained.
- 1:30:54So we're gonna work till 7: That means like, so for me, I feel it right here and I will hold my breath and now I can, I can label that and I'll be like, you're just standing in line at Home Depot to like, we're, we can, we can persevere , but I have to label that.
- 1:31:09So we're gonna work till 7: And then I'll be like, Yeah, this guy in front of me.
- 1:31:11So we're gonna work till 7: I'll be like, Hey, the, the thing it's on, like into your two by four over here.
- 1:31:16So we're gonna work till 7: And then I'll, I've, I've just remedied the situation.
- 1:31:19So we're gonna work till 7: So for me, and I guess we already talked about finished trades, but they always feel the schedule the most.
- 1:31:25So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:31:25So we're gonna work till 7: Or even like as a plumber.
- 1:31:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:31:28So we're gonna work till 7: You have to put all your fixtures in last, cuz you need, you need the finished trades to go through and set the tile.
- 1:31:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:31:34So we're gonna work till 7: You feel the same pressure because they are often the scouts behind Herbie.
- 1:31:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:31:42So we're gonna work till 7: . Yes.
- 1:31:43So we're gonna work till 7: So it's, it's like gr on the wall please.
- 1:31:45So we're gonna work till 7: So it's Yeah, gr it like, and I've been like the guy, I'd be like, Just bury him.
- 1:31:50So we're gonna work till 7: Just go, Right.
- 1:31:51So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:31:52So we're gonna work till 7: And then they, you gotta take it all off.
- 1:31:53So we're gonna work till 7: Like, it just, it just compounds.
- 1:31:56So we're gonna work till 7: So the, the hike we go to chapter 14, if you wanna keep going, at least do the chapter 14.
- 1:32:04So we're gonna work till 7: Let's do it.
- 1:32:05So we're gonna work till 7: Because the reason why the hike is such a good story is because we get into chapter 14 and to have courage that requires confronting the conflict.
- 1:32:16So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:32:17So we're gonna work till 7: If you avoid the conflict or you delegate gate.
- 1:32:22So we're gonna work till 7: That's the worst.
- 1:32:23So we're gonna work till 7: You delegate conflict.
- 1:32:25So we're gonna work till 7: You are not courageous.
- 1:32:26So we're gonna work till 7: You're a I'll save my, my adjective.
- 1:32:30So we're gonna work till 7: Or maybe it's you're a coward.
- 1:32:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:32:33So we're gonna work till 7: So if you do not confront conflict, and if you do not confront, like we have a Herbie.
- 1:32:40So we're gonna work till 7: If we say, Well, let's just make fun a herbi and just bash him.
- 1:32:45So we're gonna work till 7: You're a coward.
- 1:32:46So we're gonna work till 7: You're a bully.
- 1:32:47So we're gonna work till 7: That's bs, right?
- 1:32:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:32:49So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:32:49So we're gonna work till 7: You are not being courageous.
- 1:32:51So we're gonna work till 7: Being courageous requires you to confront the conflict.
- 1:32:56So we're gonna work till 7: And confronting conflict makes you vulnerable.
- 1:33:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:33:01So we're gonna work till 7: Because you're doing something that's different.
- 1:33:04So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:33:04So we're gonna work till 7: . So in chapter 14, Alex has to confront the conflict.
- 1:33:09So we're gonna work till 7: Like literally, he's like, Oh shit.
- 1:33:10So we're gonna work till 7: Like we're not gonna make, we're not gonna make camp by dark.
- 1:33:14So we're gonna work till 7: You, He starts doing the calculation.
- 1:33:16So we're gonna work till 7: He's like, According to the schedule the troop master gave us, We're supposed to eat lunch at 12 noon.
- 1:33:21So we're gonna work till 7: Like, the kids are dropping out, they are beat.
- 1:33:23So we're gonna work till 7: And they're like, It's noon now.
- 1:33:26So we're gonna work till 7: Herbi, Herbie is like Herbi.
- 1:33:27So we're gonna work till 7: He needs, he needs lunch.
- 1:33:29So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Yes, let me know.
- 1:33:30So we're gonna work till 7: I know.
- 1:33:31So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I can't miss a meal.
- 1:33:33So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:33:33So we're gonna work till 7: He's looking.
- 1:33:34So we're gonna work till 7: He's like, Boom, is, we have to eat lunch, Alex.
- 1:33:38So we're gonna work till 7: So chapter 11 and 13, they introduced dependent events and statistical fluctuation.
- 1:33:45So we're gonna work till 7: Chapter 14 breaks it down.
- 1:33:47So we're gonna work till 7: And I, I like this stuff.
- 1:33:50So we're gonna work till 7: This is cuz like you have to confront the brutal facts.
- 1:33:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:33:56So we're gonna work till 7: Confront the brutal facts.
- 1:33:57So we're gonna work till 7: That's good to, Great.
- 1:33:58So we're gonna work till 7: That's Jim Collins.
- 1:33:59So we're gonna work till 7: That's another book we might cover, but No, that's an amazing book.
- 1:34:03So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:34:04So we're gonna work till 7: McKenzie, I like McKenzie.
- 1:34:06So we're gonna work till 7: We work with them.
- 1:34:08So we're gonna work till 7: They're a management consulting firm and they publish an article that I copied and it says to Aspire is essential to innovation.
- 1:34:17So we're gonna work till 7: And they wrote President John F.
- 1:34:18So we're gonna work till 7: Kennedy in 1962.
- 1:34:20So we're gonna work till 7: He said, Go to the moon in this decade setting the goal.
- 1:34:23So we're gonna work till 7: That's the goal.
- 1:34:24So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:34:25So we're gonna work till 7: That's one shot.
- 1:34:26So we're gonna work till 7: That's literally where we got it.
- 1:34:28So we're gonna work till 7: And that goal, JFK 1962 motivated a nation Yeah.
- 1:34:34So we're gonna work till 7: To unprecedented levels of innovation.
- 1:34:36So we're gonna work till 7: And it's innovation.
- 1:34:38So we're gonna work till 7: It's far reaching vision.
- 1:34:40So we're gonna work till 7: And that's why we really celebrate JFK in a lot of ways.
- 1:34:44So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:34:44So we're gonna work till 7: And because you say he has such vision and is he's such a catalyst for that.
- 1:34:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:34:51So we're gonna work till 7: And if you have a far reaching vision, it can be compelling catalyst providing this, realistic enough to stimulate action today.
- 1:35:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:35:01So we're gonna work till 7: So in 1962, it was a goal, but it wasn't crazy.
- 1:35:06So we're gonna work till 7: The technology was getting close.
- 1:35:09So we're gonna work till 7: We had, we had a space program going.
- 1:35:13So we're gonna work till 7: I just needed little, I'm like, JFK is like not quite a little nudge.
- 1:35:18So we're gonna work till 7: Like it was like get to the get to the moon.
- 1:35:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:35:21So we're gonna work till 7: Before the end of the decade.
- 1:35:23So we're gonna work till 7: So they had to get there before 1970.
- 1:35:25So we're gonna work till 7: Say years.
- 1:35:26So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:35:26So we're gonna work till 7: It's a moonshot.
- 1:35:27So we're gonna work till 7: Oh yeah.
- 1:35:29So we're gonna work till 7: So establishing a quantitative innovation aspiration is not enough.
- 1:35:33So we're gonna work till 7: This is McKenzie, not me.
- 1:35:34So we're gonna work till 7: . The, the target value needs to be a portion to relevant business owners and cascaded down to their organizations in the form of performance targets and timelines.
- 1:35:44So we're gonna work till 7: Anything less risk, encouraging inaction, or the belief that innovation is someone else's job.
- 1:35:51So we're gonna work till 7: Like we need to set realistic goals.
- 1:35:54So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:35:54So we're gonna work till 7: And they need to be cascaded throughout the organization.
- 1:35:57So we're gonna work till 7: So like, we have, we're gonna do this, There's an accounting piece we've already talked about.
- 1:36:02So we're gonna work till 7: There's a financial part of, of production.
- 1:36:06So we're gonna work till 7: We need to have the safety group, Right.
- 1:36:08So we're gonna work till 7: If we're gonna reach this goal, we can't hurt anybody or, or worse, Yep.
- 1:36:12So we're gonna work till 7: If we're gonna reach this goal, we need to grow part of our, this business.
- 1:36:18So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 1:36:18So we're gonna work till 7: So like, we gotta set goals.
- 1:36:20So we're gonna work till 7: We can't just say, Hey, we're gonna get to the moon.
- 1:36:22So we're gonna work till 7: You guys figure the rest down.
- 1:36:24So we're gonna work till 7: I'm out.
- 1:36:24So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:36:25So we're gonna work till 7: Like, no.
- 1:36:26So we're gonna work till 7: We also have to work with, so I guess in, in the sixties, like we have to work with nasa, we have to work with Congress to get the, the funds approved.
- 1:36:36So we're gonna work till 7: We have to work with land developers and Yep.
- 1:36:40So we're gonna work till 7: In South Florida to, to get this area built.
- 1:36:43So we're gonna work till 7: And we have to work with whole bunch of trades people to build these rockets.
- 1:36:49So we're gonna work till 7: Oh yeah.
- 1:36:49So we're gonna work till 7: Like they were all built.
- 1:36:50So we're gonna work till 7: They didn't just magically happen.
- 1:36:52So we're gonna work till 7: They were built plumbers and electricians and carpenters.
- 1:36:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:36:56So we're gonna work till 7: And so we have to set these goals.
- 1:36:58So we're gonna work till 7: So in other words, great leaders must inspire, inspire others.
- 1:37:03So we're gonna work till 7: Take action.
- 1:37:04So we're gonna work till 7: Like, good.
- 1:37:05So we're gonna work till 7: Not even.
- 1:37:06So we're gonna work till 7: Good.
- 1:37:06So we're gonna work till 7: Good.
- 1:37:07So we're gonna work till 7: This is Jim Collins.
- 1:37:07So we're gonna work till 7: Good.
- 1:37:08So we're gonna work till 7: Good.
- 1:37:08So we're gonna work till 7: Leaders set goals.
- 1:37:10So we're gonna work till 7: Great leaders inspire others to take positive action.
- 1:37:14So we're gonna work till 7: What do you think about.
- 1:37:15So we're gonna work till 7: Kenzie's words, man.
- 1:37:18So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:37:19So we're gonna work till 7: I, I, I, It's easy for me, it's easier for me when I think of it in terms of action.
- 1:37:25So we're gonna work till 7: Like Adam, Adam gives me credit for this quote.
- 1:37:29So we're gonna work till 7: I don't think it's my quote, but I know I say it a lot.
- 1:37:31So we're gonna work till 7: Like the cemetery is full of ideas, Right?
- 1:37:35So we're gonna work till 7: Like, we all have ideas.
- 1:37:38So we're gonna work till 7: Some people have amazing Yeah.
- 1:37:39So we're gonna work till 7: But the path, the path, the hell is paved with good intentions.
- 1:37:43So we're gonna work till 7: Exactly.
- 1:37:43So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:37:44So we're gonna work till 7: And so the, for me, my observation is this, the difference is action, right?
- 1:37:49So we're gonna work till 7: And to bring up another book leadership and self deception, right?
- 1:37:53So we're gonna work till 7: When I deceive myself, can't see it, or, or violate myself by not taking action on what I'm called to do, what is presented to me in the moment, I am violating me.
- 1:38:08So we're gonna work till 7: And when I do that over and over and over and over, it degrades my whole identity.
- 1:38:14So we're gonna work till 7: Now, a hard and real example, you were there when we all had dinner with Davis and Walker and Adam and Jen, and they had an idea, right?
- 1:38:24So we're gonna work till 7: This, this lean symposium that's turned into a panel discussion that now we are on the calendar instead of Yeah, we're on the calendar to have a panel discussion at Clemson University.
- 1:38:38So we're gonna work till 7: Clemson.
- 1:38:39So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:38:40So we're gonna work till 7: And we have a commitment to have this same discussion at Texas a and m and College Station.
- 1:38:46So we're gonna work till 7: That does not happen without action.
- 1:38:49So we're gonna work till 7: I'm sticking with the scc.
- 1:38:51So we're gonna work till 7: I see no wait, Ace, I guess Clemson's, Ace, never.
- 1:38:54So we're gonna work till 7: I have no idea . But the vision, the long we transcend conferences, but with's action, yes, it's action, but the vision is a conference of that happens on a regular cadence where we're bringing industry professionals to come and share their knowledge and experience with young professionals, people getting educated that are fixing the end of the industry and expose them or introduce them to a different way of building.
- 1:39:27So we're gonna work till 7: That was Davis Hamrick thinking.
- 1:39:29So we're gonna work till 7: Davis Hamburg has no, Maybe, maybe he's got connections at Clemson, but he was sitting at a table with someone who has need connections.
- 1:39:38So we're gonna work till 7: Exactly.
- 1:39:39So we're gonna work till 7: Adam.
- 1:39:40So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:39:40So we're gonna work till 7: He's like all of a sudden an idea and a goal.
- 1:39:45So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:39:45So we're gonna work till 7: We can turn that in.
- 1:39:46So we're gonna work till 7: Actions.
- 1:39:47So we're gonna work till 7: And it's realistic.
- 1:39:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:39:49So we're gonna work till 7: It's like, Hey, I know.
- 1:39:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:39:50So we're gonna work till 7: We got, we have a venue.
- 1:39:52So we're gonna work till 7: We can do this, We can serve.
- 1:39:54So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:39:55So we're gonna work till 7: Boom.
- 1:39:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:39:56So we're gonna work till 7: So, great.
- 1:39:57So we're gonna work till 7: I'm just gonna back it up.
- 1:39:58So we're gonna work till 7: Great.
- 1:39:59So we're gonna work till 7: Leaders must inspire others to take positive action.
- 1:40:04So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:40:05So we're gonna work till 7: That's it.
- 1:40:05So we're gonna work till 7: That's all you do.
- 1:40:06So we're gonna work till 7: If you, if you're a leader and you stress somebody into action, or you, if you coer or you , Yes.
- 1:40:17So we're gonna work till 7: Put someone in a box.
- 1:40:19So we're gonna work till 7: You are not a great leader.
- 1:40:21So we're gonna work till 7: Not sure you're even good leader.
- 1:40:23So we're gonna work till 7: Mm-hmm.
- 1:40:24So we're gonna work till 7: , you might be effective for this long.
- 1:40:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:40:27So we're gonna work till 7: And it's happened.
- 1:40:28So we're gonna work till 7: It's, there's so many examples.
- 1:40:31So we're gonna work till 7: Of that of that happening.
- 1:40:33So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:33So we're gonna work till 7: , well, hell, I did it.
- 1:40:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:35So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:40:36So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:36So we're gonna work till 7: And you have to inspire others cuz it has this compounding effect.
- 1:40:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:40:42So we're gonna work till 7: This is what Alex does in this chapter.
- 1:40:45So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:40:45So we're gonna work till 7: And what he does, he plays a game.
- 1:40:47So we're gonna work till 7: You ever, you ever do a simulation to change people's mindset by Oh my God.
- 1:40:53So we're gonna work till 7: Simulations are the best way to do that.
- 1:40:57So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:40:58So we're gonna work till 7: So I got a summary of the, this game, the simulation that Alex does with the with the scouts.
- 1:41:10So we're gonna work till 7: And it's, it's Professor Martin, James Martin in I think he's retired now, but he is a University of South Florida, and that's where Adam Hoots, by the way.
- 1:41:19So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:41:19So we're gonna work till 7: Graduated from college, perhaps Adam and James.
- 1:41:23So we're gonna work till 7: Huh?
- 1:41:24So we're gonna work till 7: Adam, I'm not calling you out, but if you know Professor Martin or can make a connection in South Florida.
- 1:41:31So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:41:32So we're gonna work till 7: I also work in the Tampa Orlando vicinity.
- 1:41:36So we're gonna work till 7: And we can, we can make a connection.
- 1:41:38So we're gonna work till 7: So here's another goal.
- 1:41:40So we're gonna work till 7: Let's make a connection with, with James Martin.
- 1:41:42So we're gonna work till 7: But he basically, he, he breaks down the, the simulation that Alex runs with the with the scouts Yeah.
- 1:41:52So we're gonna work till 7: And is so good.
- 1:41:53So we're gonna work till 7: And you do a simulation with the Lego.
- 1:41:56So we're gonna work till 7: And, and probably many others.
- 1:41:58So we're gonna work till 7: There's, there's a wood block game.
- 1:42:00So we're gonna work till 7: These are not silly games.
- 1:42:02So we're gonna work till 7: These are simulations meant to change people's mindset.
- 1:42:07So we're gonna work till 7: So let me like, Gonna pause and I'll be like, These are simulations to change people's mindset.
- 1:42:14So we're gonna work till 7: And it must come with the, that weight, that level of seriousness.
- 1:42:19So we're gonna work till 7: When I ran the Woodblock game, I don't think I gave it, I don't think I gave enough.
- 1:42:24So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:42:25So we're gonna work till 7: Two, two, do that simulation.
- 1:42:27So we're gonna work till 7: But go back to Dr.
- 1:42:28So we're gonna work till 7: Martin game involves, So this chapter they're taking a break.
- 1:42:33So we're gonna work till 7: They're, they're eating lunch.
- 1:42:35So we're gonna work till 7: And Alex is like, I need, I can't do this on my own anymore.
- 1:42:39So we're gonna work till 7: Herby can't do this on his own anymore.
- 1:42:41So we're gonna work till 7: Like, we gotta figure this shit out.
- 1:42:43So we're gonna work till 7: So he goes, I need, I need bowls, I need matches, and I need one dye from Paradise.
- 1:42:50So we're gonna work till 7: And if you go camping with me, we're bringing some dice.
- 1:42:53So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:42:54So we're gonna work till 7: We're gonna play something with dice.
- 1:42:56So we're gonna work till 7: But so, so usually there's a paradise involved.
- 1:42:59So we're gonna work till 7: So there's enough they, like, they go searching through the, the scouts packs and that'll come into play here in a second.
- 1:43:07So we're gonna work till 7: But they get bowls, they get matches, and they get dyes, scouts, bowls.
- 1:43:11So we're gonna work till 7: They represent individual workstations.
- 1:43:13So we're gonna work till 7: Okay.
- 1:43:14So we're gonna work till 7: A series of bowls line'em up, matches inventory.
- 1:43:18So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:43:19So we're gonna work till 7: And then the dye statistical fluctuations.
- 1:43:23So we're gonna work till 7: roll a dye and, and statistics will tell you, you will, it, it'll roll.
- 1:43:28So we're gonna work till 7: And then the top number on the dye is, is the number.
- 1:43:32So we're gonna work till 7: So that's fluctuation and that whatever the number that you read is the performance of each workstation.
- 1:43:38So we're gonna work till 7: This is also known as the parade of trades game.
- 1:43:43So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:43:43So we're gonna work till 7: If you played this and, and salute to Dr.
- 1:43:48So we're gonna work till 7: Tomlin at University of California Berkeley, who, who taught me this personally or, and has a really good white paper that about why this applies in construction.
- 1:43:59So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:43:59So we're gonna work till 7: But this is, this is the exact game.
- 1:44:02So we're gonna work till 7: Perhaps Dr.
- 1:44:03So we're gonna work till 7: Tomlin and Dr.
- 1:44:05So we're gonna work till 7: Martin need to confer.
- 1:44:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:44:07So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:44:08So we're gonna work till 7: But maybe not.
- 1:44:08So we're gonna work till 7: So the bowls, they're set up as a production line and they, they represent dependent events.
- 1:44:13So we're gonna work till 7: Step one, step two, step three, step four where each operation has the same capacity.
- 1:44:18So we're gonna work till 7: Six products.
- 1:44:19So we're gonna work till 7: So the goal is like, you go six products per day, and on the dye has numbers one through six.
- 1:44:27So we're gonna work till 7: So the most you can roll as a six, the least you can roll as a one, right?
- 1:44:31So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:44:32So we're gonna work till 7: So the, i the goal is like move match sticks.
- 1:44:35So we're gonna work till 7: You can end like, and in the individual workstation, you can only have six in there.
- 1:44:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:44:41So we're gonna work till 7: I believe So you start rolling the dice.
- 1:44:44So we're gonna work till 7: , how do you work it?
- 1:44:45So we're gonna work till 7: You roll the dice and you each roll the dice several times.
- 1:44:49So we're gonna work till 7: And then every time you, So if you roll the dice, I get a six I put six out of the, the bra materials.
- 1:44:57So we're gonna work till 7: I put 'em into the first workstation.
- 1:44:59So we're gonna work till 7: Second workstation, they roll a three, they take six.
- 1:45:03So we're gonna work till 7: There's six in the inventory.
- 1:45:05So we're gonna work till 7: I take three in the inventory, right?
- 1:45:07So we're gonna work till 7: The next guy rolls a four, but there's only three in the inventory.
- 1:45:12So we're gonna work till 7: Mm-hmm.
- 1:45:12So we're gonna work till 7: . Oh, we got a problem.
- 1:45:14So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:45:14So we're gonna work till 7: We got a bottleneck.
- 1:45:16So we're gonna work till 7: Uhhuh.
- 1:45:17So we're gonna work till 7: So chapter 14 introduces the law bottle.
- 1:45:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:45:22So we're gonna work till 7: So if I have the capacity to do four matches, yet there's only three in the My dependent, my partner over here slacking, only got three.
- 1:45:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:45:35So we're gonna work till 7: There's going to be a different set of productions.
- 1:45:38So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:45:39So we're gonna work till 7: The problem with the dye rolling, the bottleneck never stays the same.
- 1:45:44So we're gonna work till 7: It moves.
- 1:45:45So we're gonna work till 7: It moves.
- 1:45:46So we're gonna work till 7: So they play this game, they play a couple rounds, and they, each role of the dye several times represent the, the production rate and the bottleneck nearly always appears at a different operation.
- 1:45:58So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:45:59So we're gonna work till 7: Someone always rolls a two or a one.
- 1:46:01So we're gonna work till 7: They're like, Ah, come on, you're killing me.
- 1:46:03So we're gonna work till 7: You ever do that in afraid of trades?
- 1:46:06So we're gonna work till 7: Oh man.
- 1:46:06So we're gonna work till 7: You hear that.
- 1:46:07So we're gonna work till 7: You hear it.
- 1:46:08So we're gonna work till 7: The, the first time we played it, I, I, if we were at the, if we had a couple of beers, we would've been fighting me and, and my buddy Jeff cuz I'm like, Dude, you, you're horrible.
- 1:46:21So we're gonna work till 7: You suck.
- 1:46:21So we're gonna work till 7: Like you don't know what you're doing.
- 1:46:23So we're gonna work till 7: We're rolling Dice.
- 1:46:25So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:25So we're gonna work till 7: But yeah, I, it gets, it gets heated.
- 1:46:28So we're gonna work till 7: It's, and that's real life.
- 1:46:30So we're gonna work till 7: It is true.
- 1:46:30So we're gonna work till 7: Does that ever happen on the job site?
- 1:46:33So we're gonna work till 7: Oh, 100%.
- 1:46:34So we're gonna work till 7: A hundred percent.
- 1:46:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:46:36So we're gonna work till 7: A hundred percent.
- 1:46:37So we're gonna work till 7: And then I'll come by and I be like, Cause I'll have my favorites and be, and I'll defend.
- 1:46:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:46:43So we're gonna work till 7: I won't defend Herbie.
- 1:46:44So we're gonna work till 7: I'll defend my favorites.
- 1:46:46So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:46:47So we're gonna work till 7: And not because I, they're my favorites because I'm highly biased cuz I'm be like, I need to achieve this goal.
- 1:46:53So we're gonna work till 7: But back to the book, The Game Works and back to Dr.
- 1:46:56So we're gonna work till 7: Martin's beautiful summary.
- 1:46:58So we're gonna work till 7: The game works to prove Alex Rogan's assumption that if each operation is a sequence of dependent events and has the same amount of capacity, then the variations in between the dependent events will cause bottlenecks to move from operation to operation.
- 1:47:15So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:47:16So we're gonna work till 7: So if everybody, if you have dependent events and you have statistical fluctuations, The bottleneck will not be the same.
- 1:47:23So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:47:24So we're gonna work till 7: It'll move around and that'll drive you crazy.
- 1:47:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:47:28So we're gonna work till 7: . Yep.
- 1:47:28So we're gonna work till 7: Firefighting baby, boom.
- 1:47:31So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:47:31So we're gonna work till 7: . Yep.
- 1:47:32So we're gonna work till 7: And that's what happens.
- 1:47:33So we're gonna work till 7: And if there's, if you have constantly moving around bottlenecks, and we'll go back to Unico, you remember the earlier chapters they had, they had full-time people.
- 1:47:46So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:47:46So we're gonna work till 7: These, they had, they had mechanical engineers, These probably people with graduate degrees who were expediters, who could, who had to look at the situation and be like, make a quick calculation and be like, Hey, we need to move this, take this operation and move this ahead.
- 1:48:03So we're gonna work till 7: And that was designed into the system.
- 1:48:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:48:07So we're gonna work till 7: And all of a sudden Alex is like, with matches and bowls and dice and in the middle of a forest, , no computers.
- 1:48:17So we're gonna work till 7: And he's observing floating bottlenecks.
- 1:48:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:48:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's, this is why simple sim simulations are effective teaching methods.
- 1:48:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:48:27So we're gonna work till 7: Because all because you can see it.
- 1:48:29So we're gonna work till 7: It's hard to see in a factory.
- 1:48:31So we're gonna work till 7: It's even harder to, to see it on the site.
- 1:48:33So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:48:33So we're gonna work till 7: Cause it takes time.
- 1:48:35So we're gonna work till 7: But if you see a simulation, it happens really rapidly in front of your face.
- 1:48:39So we're gonna work till 7: And if you have if you do it very effectively and do it very seriously and you don't joke around these simulations, they prove these theories, they prove them out.
- 1:48:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:48:50So we're gonna work till 7: And you'll see the bottlenecks show up and people get angry with each other.
- 1:48:54So we're gonna work till 7: And of course we're like, the stakes are pretty low, but Right.
- 1:48:58So we're gonna work till 7: You get some liquid courage in you.
- 1:48:59So we're gonna work till 7: Maybe, perhaps, we would've been fighting, I promise we would've been fighting.
- 1:49:03So we're gonna work till 7: So floating bottlenecks were occur because the effects of variation in the system.
- 1:49:08So we're gonna work till 7: So if you go on to study Dr.
- 1:49:10So we're gonna work till 7: Gold rat variation becomes incredibly important.
- 1:49:13So we're gonna work till 7: Variation is like the scourge to production.
- 1:49:17So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:49:17So we're gonna work till 7: According to Dr.
- 1:49:19So we're gonna work till 7: Gold rat . Yes.
- 1:49:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's not dogma, I'm just saying according to Dr.
- 1:49:23So we're gonna work till 7: Gold Rat, his theory of constraints, floating bottlenecks will occur because of the effects of variation.
- 1:49:31So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:49:32So we're gonna work till 7: It just, it will move around.
- 1:49:33So we're gonna work till 7: Just when you think you got it figured out it, something over here will be messing around with the system.
- 1:49:40So we're gonna work till 7: Two, because of floating bottlenecks, it's difficult to know where the bottleneck will show up next.
- 1:49:47So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:49:47So we're gonna work till 7: So you therefore lose the ability to fully manage any process.
- 1:49:53So we're gonna work till 7: You're just reacting.
- 1:49:55So we're gonna work till 7: You can only react.
- 1:49:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:49:57So we're gonna work till 7: So if, if you have floating bottlenecks and you don't understand what's the causing the statistical fluctuations, the, the, you lose your ability to manage.
- 1:50:08So we're gonna work till 7: You lose command and control.
- 1:50:11So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:50:12So we're gonna work till 7: You lose the red Gantt chart . It's gone baby.
- 1:50:16So we're gonna work till 7: The red, the, the red line on the CPM jumps around like crazy.
- 1:50:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:50:22So we're gonna work till 7: Ever see that?
- 1:50:22So we're gonna work till 7: I see it all the time.
- 1:50:23So we're gonna work till 7: Ah, be like, okay, alright.
- 1:50:25So we're gonna work till 7: I got it.
- 1:50:26So we're gonna work till 7: Start to start minus five.
- 1:50:28So we're gonna work till 7: And like we try to like, we need to keep the.
- 1:50:32So we're gonna work till 7: We have to keep the critical path on this particular trade, keep the heat on them.
- 1:50:36So we're gonna work till 7: I've done this.
- 1:50:37So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:50:37So we're gonna work till 7: I've done this.
- 1:50:38So we're gonna work till 7: We've manipulate the schedule.
- 1:50:40So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not saying we do this now, we try not to.
- 1:50:42So we're gonna work till 7: This is not, it's not effective construction management, but I have done this in the past where we will manipulate the project schedule to keep the critical path on a particular sequence of events.
- 1:50:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:50:55So we're gonna work till 7: That is, that's just the way it is.
- 1:50:57So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, yes.
- 1:50:59So we're gonna work till 7: You know, is it wrong?
- 1:51:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:51:01So we're gonna work till 7: I had a, I was working with the team in Kansas City, and what they did was, and there was heavy electrical, heavy, heavy, heavy overhead work had to be done, and it was pretty tight space.
- 1:51:13So we're gonna work till 7: They started framing all the walls before any of the overhead went up.
- 1:51:17So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm like, Whoa.
- 1:51:18So we're gonna work till 7: Like, what are you, Why are you doing, Help me understand why this is happening.
- 1:51:22So we're gonna work till 7: And the answer I got was, Well, because it's the critical path.
- 1:51:26So we're gonna work till 7: I said, Okay, who created the schedule?
- 1:51:29So we're gonna work till 7: Oh, well, I did.
- 1:51:30So we're gonna work till 7: Like, okay, so you indicated that this task was critical path.
- 1:51:36So we're gonna work till 7: Like No, that's what the schedule said.
- 1:51:38So we're gonna work till 7: Okay.
- 1:51:38So we're gonna work till 7: Well, who created the, So it was this circle of the critical path was defined by him.
- 1:51:44So we're gonna work till 7: .
- 1:51:44So we're gonna work till 7: He created the schedule, or it's probably Yes, yes.
- 1:51:49So we're gonna work till 7: And so the, the reasoning behind putting the framing up first was because he said so.
- 1:51:58So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 1:51:58So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I mean, for me, that was my distillation, the whole situation.
- 1:52:01So we're gonna work till 7: Do you realize that you've just multiplied the amount of time it's going to take to get the overhead work done that must be complete so that you can get your in wall done and cover these walls?
- 1:52:15So we're gonna work till 7: Like are you not seeing that?
- 1:52:17So we're gonna work till 7: And we went round and round and round, couldn't see it.
- 1:52:21So we're gonna work till 7: Trade showed up, they were very unhappy, lots of screaming and yelling.
- 1:52:26So we're gonna work till 7: And he finally landed like, Okay, on the next half of the building of this floor space, we're gonna do overhead first.
- 1:52:33So we're gonna work till 7: And he was doing it to prove that he was right.
- 1:52:36So we're gonna work till 7: .
- 1:52:36So we're gonna work till 7: But he learned, he was like, Oh my God, I didn't realize.
- 1:52:39So we're gonna work till 7: And my whole point was, bro, we made this schedule.
- 1:52:43So we're gonna work till 7: If we made it, we can change it like that.
- 1:52:46So we're gonna work till 7: We did like it was made in a, in a, in a vacuum and we didn't understand all the other things.
- 1:52:53So we're gonna work till 7: We can arrange our bowls.
- 1:52:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:52:55So we're gonna work till 7: However we manage.
- 1:52:57So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:52:57So we're gonna work till 7: We can get dice that roll threes and fours.
- 1:53:01So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah, you can, you can buy dice that roll threes and Awesome.
- 1:53:04So we're gonna work till 7: Let's we gotta do 15 today cuz it's, Let's do it.
- 1:53:08So we're gonna work till 7: It just, So and this is important to me and that was I already said like, like I was in the midst of when I was writing this summary, I was in the midst of five in relations.
- 1:53:20So we're gonna work till 7: This is back in May.
- 1:53:21So we're gonna work till 7: Man, this talk about like how long it takes statistical fluctuations.
- 1:53:27So we're gonna work till 7: It's hard, but No, this is April, I guess, right?
- 1:53:31So we're gonna work till 7: When you're, Yeah.
- 1:53:32So we're gonna work till 7: February and April, March.
- 1:53:34So we're gonna work till 7: Wow.
- 1:53:34So we're gonna work till 7: So chapter 15.
- 1:53:37So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not even gonna recap it cuz I just want to get into, let's go the issue.
- 1:53:42So we're gonna work till 7: And I just wanna take a minute to raise awareness to a major problem in the construction industry.
- 1:53:48So we're gonna work till 7: It's major and that's mental health.
- 1:53:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:53:52So we're gonna work till 7: And I will start with what I believe, and this is only me.
- 1:53:58So we're gonna work till 7: What contributes to our identity as men in construction?
- 1:54:06So we're gonna work till 7: I, I'm not a woman.
- 1:54:08So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I, I can't, I can only empathize, but I am a man in construction and I do identify with many of the things I'm about to talk about.
- 1:54:17So we're gonna work till 7: So arguably, and this is arguably, there's three very famous photographs of the construction industry, at least in the United States of America.
- 1:54:28So we're gonna work till 7: There's very three and the first one, everyone knows this.
- 1:54:33So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:54:33So we're gonna work till 7: At least in construction.
- 1:54:34So we're gonna work till 7: 19 32, 30 Rockefeller Center, 11 construction workers, they sit on a beam.
- 1:54:43So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:54:44So we're gonna work till 7: In, in I guess that's Midtown Manhattan.
- 1:54:48So we're gonna work till 7: And I've been to the top of 30 Rock.
- 1:54:49So we're gonna work till 7: Like, it's cool.
- 1:54:51So we're gonna work till 7: It's like yeah.
- 1:54:51So we're gonna work till 7: Cause you look down, you see Central Park.
- 1:54:54So we're gonna work till 7: So you see this, see this site, and they're sitting on the beam.
- 1:54:58So we're gonna work till 7: None of 'em are tied off.
- 1:55:00So we're gonna work till 7: Nope.
- 1:55:00So we're gonna work till 7: one guy's got like a, a flas of a whiskey, but they're eating lunch and they're so confident.
- 1:55:07So we're gonna work till 7: If you lean back and like the scene, maybe you'll have to like add this to the show notes or something, but everybody's seen this photo.
- 1:55:17So we're gonna work till 7: It's, they're at, they're in grave peril and they're just so confident and they're like, Oh, we're eating lunch.
- 1:55:23So we're gonna work till 7: And I think it's been, it was go through the history, like it was very stage photo like that.
- 1:55:29So we're gonna work till 7: I think the newspapers only it was off, but it's New York City iron workers sitting on a beam.
- 1:55:34So we're gonna work till 7: They're just so confident.
- 1:55:36So we're gonna work till 7: And that's, that's the first one.
- 1:55:39So we're gonna work till 7: And there Allman, Yes.
- 1:55:41So we're gonna work till 7: None of them were in, There's no safety gear to be seen.
- 1:55:44So we're gonna work till 7: There's none, no one's tied off.
- 1:55:46So we're gonna work till 7: There's no hard hats.
- 1:55:48So we're gonna work till 7: Half the people aren't even wearing shirts.
- 1:55:50So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:55:50So we're gonna work till 7: , That's, that's the first photo.
- 1:55:53So we're gonna work till 7: 1932 19 42, 10 years later, there's a photo of a carpenter and he's using a I don't, what do they call these?
- 1:56:04So we're gonna work till 7: It's like a drill, but it's man It's a very famous photo of a carpenter.
- 1:56:10So we're gonna work till 7: He's working on the Douglas Dam in Tennessee, 1942.
- 1:56:13So we're gonna work till 7: So this would be World War II kind of timeframe.
- 1:56:17So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:56:17So we're gonna work till 7: But the, the, the unique piece of this photograph is, and it's, it's, it's their very 1940s, but he's wearing that skull guard, The, the composite.
- 1:56:28So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:56:29So we're gonna work till 7: Skull guard, hard hat.
- 1:56:31So we're gonna work till 7: Every carpenter, I mean, any carpenter who's cool.
- 1:56:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:56:36So we're gonna work till 7: It's, it's the orange Skull guard composite hard hit.
- 1:56:41So we're gonna work till 7: And it's, it's on a tilt and he's got his leg up and he is wearing overall muddy.
- 1:56:47So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:56:47So we're gonna work till 7: And he, he is working hard.
- 1:56:49So we're gonna work till 7: Like it, his face is scrunched and that is the ideal carpenter.
- 1:56:55So we're gonna work till 7: He's make, I'm drilling into timber, I'm building a dam.
- 1:56:59So we're gonna work till 7: This is contributing to, I imagine Manhattan project.
- 1:57:03So we're gonna work till 7: Like this is, this is, this is big deal.
- 1:57:06So we're gonna work till 7: That is our ideal.
- 1:57:07So we're gonna work till 7: The third photograph, and it's Louis Hines and he's, he take, this is in 1920, so this is way before even 30 rock filler.
- 1:57:15So we're gonna work till 7: This is he's, this is a mechanic.
- 1:57:17So we're gonna work till 7: He's installing a steam pump.
- 1:57:20So we're gonna work till 7: So this would be a mechanical steam fitter, I imagine.
- 1:57:25So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:57:26So we're gonna work till 7: It's very respective trade, especially in 1920, especially now.
- 1:57:29So we're gonna work till 7: Steam fitters, no joke.
- 1:57:31So we're gonna work till 7: Like shit.
- 1:57:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah, Yep.
- 1:57:33So we're gonna work till 7: Mechanical, Mechanical trades.
- 1:57:36So we're gonna work till 7: Like yeah.
- 1:57:36So we're gonna work till 7: Like, but he's hunched over and he's he has this giant wrench, Lewis Hs.
- 1:57:43So we're gonna work till 7: He's working in a powerhouse and he is working on steam pump.
- 1:57:46So we're gonna work till 7: And he is, he's tightening bolts and all of these photographs, they depict men.
- 1:57:52So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:57:52So we're gonna work till 7: And they depict men with masculine qualities.
- 1:57:56So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:57:57So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 1:57:57So we're gonna work till 7: They're all, none of 'em are in ergonomic.
- 1:57:59So we're gonna work till 7: They're not in good, they're not in safe places.
- 1:58:02So we're gonna work till 7: None of 'em are safe.
- 1:58:05So we're gonna work till 7: But they're all this ideal, like this is what men do.
- 1:58:09So we're gonna work till 7: We get after we work in, in, with big tools and we work with our hands and we sit on beams and it's considered typical and appropriate.
- 1:58:20So we're gonna work till 7: It's typical and appropriate.
- 1:58:22So we're gonna work till 7: That's expected of men and, and boys.
- 1:58:25So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:58:26So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm not here to say that that's bad.
- 1:58:28So we're gonna work till 7: That is my ideal too.
- 1:58:29So we're gonna work till 7: I I, I have that ideal, that ideal was invested into me.
- 1:58:35So we're gonna work till 7: That it's the best man for this job.
- 1:58:37So we're gonna work till 7: And if you get paid for the work that you put in and sometimes work, is that ergonomic?
- 1:58:46So we're gonna work till 7: It's not clean.
- 1:58:47So we're gonna work till 7: You're gonna, it's, you're gonna hunch over and that's the way it is.
- 1:58:53So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:58:53So we're gonna work till 7: And that's a masculine I that, But here's the thing about that.
- 1:58:57So we're gonna work till 7: These are famous photographs that get, they're in museums.
- 1:59:01So we're gonna work till 7: If you go to New York City, you're gonna see this Julian Times.
- 1:59:05So we're gonna work till 7: I might have, I might even have a picture.
- 1:59:08So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:59:08So we're gonna work till 7: I might even have the, the, the worker, the iron workers.
- 1:59:11So we're gonna work till 7: But it's and that, especially the iron workers, that that has been replicated many times.
- 1:59:17So we're gonna work till 7: And that is our ideal, It's aren't ideal.
- 1:59:21So we're gonna work till 7: And that is a masculine thing.
- 1:59:23So we're gonna work till 7: And that's tied to construction.
- 1:59:25So we're gonna work till 7: All of those are trades workers.
- 1:59:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 1:59:28So we're gonna work till 7: They're wearing that iconic school guard composite hard hat.
- 1:59:32So we're gonna work till 7: We still wear it today.
- 1:59:34So we're gonna work till 7: I still think it's cool.
- 1:59:35So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 1:59:36So we're gonna work till 7: I gotta wear one that's got advisor and all kinds of stuff.
- 1:59:39So we're gonna work till 7: . But it's our ideal.
- 1:59:39So we're gonna work till 7: So traits traditionally viewed as masculine western society include strength, courage, independence, leadership, and assertiveness.
- 1:59:51So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 1:59:51So we're gonna work till 7: Those are, these are the, the traits of that have been studied that are masculine traits.
- 1:59:58So we're gonna work till 7: What do you, what do you think about this?
- 2:00:00So we're gonna work till 7: I can't disagree with those traits because they're valuable traits.
- 2:00:04So we're gonna work till 7: The problem.
- 2:00:05So we're gonna work till 7: Is the disregard for human life, right?
- 2:00:10So we're gonna work till 7: Like these men, they, they were on the edge.
- 2:00:14So we're gonna work till 7: They were a bump away from tragic circumstance.
- 2:00:20So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:21So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:21So we're gonna work till 7: Like if, if you fall from that level and, and 30 Rockefeller Center, it's still there.
- 2:00:27So we're gonna work till 7: That beam still exists.
- 2:00:29So we're gonna work till 7: It's Yep.
- 2:00:30So we're gonna work till 7: Could be somebody listening to this on that floor.
- 2:00:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:00:32So we're gonna work till 7: Perhaps.
- 2:00:33So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:00:36So we're gonna work till 7: If you fall, you're falling into that the street.
- 2:00:39So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:00:40So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:00:40So we're gonna work till 7: So you're put at peril.
- 2:00:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:42So we're gonna work till 7: Absolutely.
- 2:00:43So we're gonna work till 7: And the work, the, the credit.
- 2:00:46So we're gonna work till 7: I, I had a awesome coach, Bryant Sanders who helped me shift my, my, my vision of what hard the definition of hard work is.
- 2:00:57So we're gonna work till 7: And he said it this way.
- 2:00:59So we're gonna work till 7: He's like, Jesse, what you consider hard work is abusive, disrespectful, and neglectful work.
- 2:01:06So we're gonna work till 7: I'm like, Whoa.
- 2:01:08So we're gonna work till 7: And that's our industry.
- 2:01:09So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 2:01:09So we're gonna work till 7: That's so, the traits that you mentioned, valuable traits, but if I were to say, and I've said it, I was out on a project one time, were cutting into a sanitary, sanitary riser in a hospital and we were all just gonna do it, right?
- 2:01:24So we're gonna work till 7: Cuz they told us to do it.
- 2:01:25So we're gonna work till 7: That was part of our job.
- 2:01:27So we're gonna work till 7: And I said, Wait a minute, above us is the icu, and people are up there with, who knows what kind of disease, and they're putting that into this pipe that I'm supposed to cut.
- 2:01:39So we're gonna work till 7: Like, that's not a good thing.
- 2:01:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:01:42So we're gonna work till 7: We need, like, we, what precautions are we going to?
- 2:01:45So we're gonna work till 7: Especially the person doing like the dumping end probably has like ppe?
- 2:01:49So we're gonna work till 7: No, we didn't have any of that.
- 2:01:51So we're gonna work till 7: No, no.
- 2:01:51So we're gonna work till 7: The person who is doing the dumping Yes.
- 2:01:53So we're gonna work till 7: Into the pipe.
- 2:01:54So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:01:54So we're gonna work till 7: Totally.
- 2:01:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:01:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:01:55So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:01:56So we're gonna work till 7: The, the hospital staff had the proper attire, proper PPE to protect their health.
- 2:02:01So we're gonna work till 7: Once went into the pipe, Well will, right now we're supposed to cut into this thing.
- 2:02:06So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm like, hold on.
- 2:02:07So we're gonna work till 7: Like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 2:02:09So we're gonna work till 7: What kind?
- 2:02:09So we're gonna work till 7: We need gear.
- 2:02:11So we're gonna work till 7: We need, we need stuff, shots.
- 2:02:13So we're gonna work till 7: I don't know what, like whole, I'm not just gonna cut into this pipe.
- 2:02:16So we're gonna work till 7: And in my head I'm thinking like, the company is going to appreciate this because I'm bringing a risk issue to the surface.
- 2:02:26So we're gonna work till 7: That's not what I got.
- 2:02:27So we're gonna work till 7: What I got was, you're a problem.
- 2:02:29So we're gonna work till 7: You need to stop being soft and stop complaining and cut the damn pipe.
- 2:02:34So we're gonna work till 7: And I said, Okay, I'm not gonna cut the pipe and I'm not gonna instruct anybody else out here to cut the pipe.
- 2:02:41So we're gonna work till 7: So I got switched to another project.
- 2:02:43So we're gonna work till 7: But you were being courageous.
- 2:02:45So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:02:45So we're gonna work till 7: I don't know.
- 2:02:46So we're gonna work till 7: I was assertive.
- 2:02:47So we're gonna work till 7: I was saying you were being assertive.
- 2:02:49So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:02:50So we're gonna work till 7: One of the, one of the ones look at one of the traits is assertiveness, right?
- 2:02:55So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:02:55So we're gonna work till 7: No.
- 2:02:56So we're gonna work till 7: Like assertiveness is, I don't stand for this.
- 2:02:59So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:03:00So we're gonna work till 7: We are not gonna do this thing.
- 2:03:02So we're gonna work till 7: You were being masculine.
- 2:03:03So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:03:03So we're gonna work till 7: But it was also was masculinity at risk.
- 2:03:07So we're gonna work till 7: Absolutely.
- 2:03:08So we're gonna work till 7: I knew, I said, Man, I'm gonna make a big deal.
- 2:03:11So we're gonna work till 7: I'm gonna say something and they're gonna make, All I expected was people to make fun of me.
- 2:03:16So we're gonna work till 7: I didn't expect to get transferred off the job and be labeled a whiny boy.
- 2:03:21So we're gonna work till 7: So my masculinity for those people, well, not all of 'em, but a bunch of 'em.
- 2:03:26So we're gonna work till 7: I was less manly because I wouldn't take that risk.
- 2:03:31So we're gonna work till 7: And that's, that's the thing that we deal with out there, right?
- 2:03:35So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Oh man, come on, Just, just get in there.
- 2:03:38So we're gonna work till 7: You don't need shoring.
- 2:03:39So we're gonna work till 7: What are you scared of?
- 2:03:40So we're gonna work till 7: Oh man, just climb up there real quick.
- 2:03:42So we're gonna work till 7: Like, don't be such a win.
- 2:03:43So we're gonna work till 7: Like we use.
- 2:03:45So we're gonna work till 7: And I say, I've done that in the past.
- 2:03:47So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Oh man, come on.
- 2:03:48So we're gonna work till 7: Really?
- 2:03:48So we're gonna work till 7: You need a water break?
- 2:03:50So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 2:03:50So we're gonna work till 7: Like, hey, you know, dude, pick it up like it's 105 degrees and we're working on an underground roughing where there's absolutely no shade.
- 2:03:59So we're gonna work till 7: It's two o'clock in the afternoon, people are exhausted.
- 2:04:02So we're gonna work till 7: And I'll tell like, Hey, yeah, you're down in a ditch with no breeze.
- 2:04:05So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah, no, no breeze, just misery.
- 2:04:08So we're gonna work till 7: And I'll say like, Man, did you drop your purse?
- 2:04:12So we're gonna work till 7: Like, pick it up her, We, we got, we gotta get done.
- 2:04:15So we're gonna work till 7: And so there's all these, you used it earlier, right?
- 2:04:18So we're gonna work till 7: These little micro cuts.
- 2:04:20So we're gonna work till 7: And I would attack people's masculinity instead of appreciating the human being that's in front of me.
- 2:04:27So we're gonna work till 7: And so that's kind of the twist.
- 2:04:28So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, those traits are amazing, but we gotta appreciate the human being.
- 2:04:32So we're gonna work till 7: And the pictures that you're talking about, this, this persona that we aspire to is a also never complains, just jumps in, doesn't check for themselves, doesn't check for the person next to them because that is feminine.
- 2:04:48So we're gonna work till 7: Being worried about somebody else is considered feminine.
- 2:04:51So we're gonna work till 7: It is the inverse of masculinity.
- 2:04:54So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:04:55So we're gonna work till 7: Or I shouldn't say that.
- 2:04:57So we're gonna work till 7: It's not the inverse, it's just not masculinity.
- 2:05:00So we're gonna work till 7: The ideals are femininity, caring, compassion.
- 2:05:04So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:05:05So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:05:05So we're gonna work till 7: Teaching.
- 2:05:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:05:07So we're gonna work till 7: And that reason why I bring that up, because.
- 2:05:10So we're gonna work till 7: I recently had a identity kind of shift.
- 2:05:15So we're gonna work till 7: Ah, because when I was, you know, looking at this, I was like, Hey, like, and I was reading this to my better half Angeline, and she asked me this and it cut me just to the, I remember you tell talking about this.
- 2:05:32So we're gonna work till 7: I was just, I'll tell it publicly now.
- 2:05:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:05:35So we're gonna work till 7: She goes, and I've, I've moved on from this, but it cut me down.
- 2:05:39So we're gonna work till 7: She goes, Do you think that those traits in that identity of construction is the reason why you got into it?
- 2:05:49So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:05:49So we're gonna work till 7: And I was like, Is that like all of a sudden you start that's it's like that Yes.
- 2:05:56So we're gonna work till 7: Danger, risk being dirty, grinding it out.
- 2:06:02So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:06:02So we're gonna work till 7: And swallowing your emotions and these ideals is also the reason what draw me in.
- 2:06:10So we're gonna work till 7: And I was like, Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:06:11So we're gonna work till 7: Like, what?
- 2:06:12So we're gonna work till 7: Are you kidding me?
- 2:06:13So we're gonna work till 7: ? Yep.
- 2:06:13So we're gonna work till 7: Like, yes, absolutely it was.
- 2:06:15So we're gonna work till 7: And I had, I had a, a minor crisis.
- 2:06:20So we're gonna work till 7: It wasn't, it didn't like it ruined me, but like, I was like, I started a question, I'm like, like, is this, is this healthy?
- 2:06:29So we're gonna work till 7: Like, is this, And I was like, No, we need, as men, we need to be assertive.
- 2:06:35So we're gonna work till 7: We need to be leaders.
- 2:06:37So we're gonna work till 7: We need to be independent, we need to be courageous.
- 2:06:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:06:42So we're gonna work till 7: And we need to do these things.
- 2:06:43So we're gonna work till 7: And not in a, in a, in a, in a way where it's, where it's negative.
- 2:06:49So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:06:49So we're gonna work till 7: We can do, we can be courageous in a way that is positive.
- 2:06:53So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:06:53So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:06:53So we're gonna work till 7: We can be assertive and help other people.
- 2:06:57So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:06:57So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:06:58So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:06:59So we're gonna work till 7: We can be assertive and teach somebody, be like, Hey, hey, tie off now.
- 2:07:04So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 2:07:05So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:07:05So we're gonna work till 7: We can, we can be leaders and have those great leadership qualities and also be men.
- 2:07:11So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:07:11So we're gonna work till 7: And have masculine quantities.
- 2:07:13So we're gonna work till 7: This isn't a, a, a die tribe not tearing down masculinity.
- 2:07:18So we're gonna work till 7: We can do all of these things Yes.
- 2:07:21So we're gonna work till 7: And still be really men and men.
- 2:07:24So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:07:24So we're gonna work till 7: And so, I, I, I, there's a study published in the Psychology of Men and Masculinity.
- 2:07:31So we're gonna work till 7: There's a study, there's a journal about this.
- 2:07:35So we're gonna work till 7: Okay.
- 2:07:35So we're gonna work till 7: A medical journal about the psychology of men and masculinity.
- 2:07:39So we're gonna work till 7: There's a publication you ever wanna dive into it?
- 2:07:44So we're gonna work till 7: It's actually pretty good, but the researchers found that men with higher levels of traditional masculinity, ideology, So that's the, It's not that I embody, Right.
- 2:07:54So we're gonna work till 7: These idea.
- 2:07:55So we're gonna work till 7: Like, I don't, I don't, like, I'm not an I'm not Jocko, right?
- 2:08:01So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:08:01So we're gonna work till 7: . Like, everybody's like, Whoa.
- 2:08:03So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:08:03So we're gonna work till 7: Family man.
- 2:08:04So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:08:04So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not, I, I, I haven't, I'm not been moving in the Navy Seals.
- 2:08:09So we're gonna work till 7: I'm not even close.
- 2:08:10So we're gonna work till 7: I lived in San Diego.
- 2:08:11So we're gonna work till 7: That was the closest I got.
- 2:08:12So we're gonna work till 7: I've been to Coronado, I've visited.
- 2:08:15So we're gonna work till 7: But but the researchers, they found the men with higher levels of ideology so that, that there weren.
- 2:08:23So we're gonna work till 7: They didn't embody these traits.
- 2:08:25So we're gonna work till 7: They just had the ideology.
- 2:08:27So we're gonna work till 7: They also tended to have a more negative opinion of seeking psychological help.
- 2:08:33So we're gonna work till 7: And they also noted that a man who was surrounded by a supportive group of other men, like a church group that encourages members to share problems and seek support they might be more likely to seek help than a man who's only social network discourages such sharing.
- 2:08:52So we're gonna work till 7: And there's another note I say men, and this is researchers.
- 2:08:56So we're gonna work till 7: Men are more likely to seek help for problems they think are normative.
- 2:09:01So we're gonna work till 7: That is problems that many other men share.
- 2:09:05So we're gonna work till 7: Mm-hmm.
- 2:09:06So we're gonna work till 7: . So this is like, these are normal problems.
- 2:09:07So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Hey, I got bad hips and knees.
- 2:09:10So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:09:10So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Right.
- 2:09:11So we're gonna work till 7: Like, that's pretty normal thing for men.
- 2:09:13So we're gonna work till 7: Or like, ah, like I got, I tore my ACL or something when I was playing high school football or something.
- 2:09:19So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:09:20So we're gonna work till 7: So like, these are normal things, like we can talk about this.
- 2:09:24So we're gonna work till 7: But there's, it's, it gets more difficult.
- 2:09:26So we're gonna work till 7: So if men perceive being depressed is not normal, then if they do try to get help, they might feel dysfunctional.
- 2:09:37So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:09:38So we're gonna work till 7: So instead they might try to keep their depression quiet.
- 2:09:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:09:42So we're gonna work till 7: And then maybe self-medicate with drugs or alcohol and how do I know?
- 2:09:46So we're gonna work till 7: Yep, same.
- 2:09:48So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:09:48So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:09:48So we're gonna work till 7: So if, if it's not normal being like, Hey, I got, I got, I didn't, you chewed me out and I, I feel like crap, but I'm not gonna tell you that and I'm just gonna go home.
- 2:10:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:10:00So we're gonna work till 7: And like self-medicate.
- 2:10:04So we're gonna work till 7: But here's the thing about normalization.
- 2:10:07So we're gonna work till 7: It's been done before.
- 2:10:08So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:10:09So we're gonna work till 7: There's marketing campaign by a company we work with at dpr Pfizer, and over, geez, two decades now, they've been normalizing a social taboo.
- 2:10:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's erectile dysfunction and men.
- 2:10:23So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:10:24So we're gonna work till 7: They've been normalizing this, this is, this is probably the most private of private issues.
- 2:10:30So we're gonna work till 7: . Yes.
- 2:10:31So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 2:10:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:10:33So we're gonna work till 7: This is a, this is a, this is a private, very, very private.
- 2:10:37So we're gonna work till 7: This is a very, very private issue.
- 2:10:39So we're gonna work till 7: And this is now an issue that's on TV all the time.
- 2:10:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:10:43So we're gonna work till 7: Because there's medication for that.
- 2:10:45So we're gonna work till 7: And for decades now that there's been Viagra and Seattle and like, that's on the news.
- 2:10:52So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:10:52So we're gonna work till 7: And it's in the, it's in magazines and there's a marketing campaign.
- 2:10:56So we're gonna work till 7: Millions of dollars were spent to normalize this taboo issue with men.
- 2:11:04So we're gonna work till 7: And they went right at the psychology of it because if, if we don't normalize this issue, men are not likely to talk about this issue with their doctor.
- 2:11:15So we're gonna work till 7: In a, in a, you go to your doctor, like you're in a room with a door closed, like, and they're.
- 2:11:22So we're gonna work till 7: Legally obliged to not tell anybody.
- 2:11:25So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:11:25So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:11:26So we're gonna work till 7: Like this is a conversation who should be just like, Hey, I have this problem with like, my intimate situation.
- 2:11:32So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:11:33So we're gonna work till 7: Like it but since it's this very taboo social stigma, we don't confront that brutal fact.
- 2:11:41So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:11:41So we're gonna work till 7: And even though there is a prescription that could be written and there's medication that you can take and it, and it helps to resolve that that drug was invented and it wasn't being prescribed because it's such a taboo situation cuz it wasn't normalized.
- 2:11:57So we're gonna work till 7: But over the years we've become we even know what like the pill looks like, right?
- 2:12:04So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:12:04So we're gonna work till 7: What color is it?
- 2:12:05So we're gonna work till 7: The blue, blue pill.
- 2:12:06So we're gonna work till 7: The blue.
- 2:12:07So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:12:07So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:12:08So we're gonna work till 7: And it says Pfizer on it.
- 2:12:09So we're gonna work till 7: And we've now normalized that problem and we can now talk to our doctor about that situation.
- 2:12:19So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:12:20So we're gonna work till 7: And, and how do I know that?
- 2:12:21So we're gonna work till 7: Because there's, there's research that's indicated that when we admit our problems and clearly identify negative factors contributing to them after the ads and after the Viagra drugs, there's so much awareness about it that you can talk freely about it.
- 2:12:37So we're gonna work till 7: Or maybe not freely, but like, if, if I can lower the, the, the being weird or being taboo just this much., you can seek professional help.
- 2:12:48So we're gonna work till 7: . But we have to, to seek professional help.
- 2:12:51So we're gonna work till 7: We have to admit our problems.
- 2:12:53So we're gonna work till 7: We have to confront them.
- 2:12:56So we're gonna work till 7: And we have to begin to take positive steps to remove those negative factors.
- 2:13:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:13:01So we're gonna work till 7: And, and taking positive steps to remove negative factors mean like, Hey guys, like I know it looks pretty cool to sit out on that beam, but none of you guys are tied off and we have a rule here That we have a zero tolerance policy for anything over six feet.
- 2:13:18So we're gonna work till 7: , you secure yourself with a fall arrest, some kind of fall arrest system.
- 2:13:23So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:13:23So we're gonna work till 7: And that is, that is our policy and we have zero tolerance for that.
- 2:13:27So we're gonna work till 7: So everybody please pack up your stuff and go find work elsewhere.
- 2:13:32So we're gonna work till 7: We are Yes.
- 2:13:33So we're gonna work till 7: Assertive to that.
- 2:13:35So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:13:35So we're gonna work till 7: We can also be strong and courageous and be like, Hey, we have a problem with tie off on this project.
- 2:13:41So we're gonna work till 7: We have, this is an issue.
- 2:13:43So we're gonna work till 7: We've, is become normalized that it's it's cool and it's, it's like Right, like it's, we're taking pictures with the newspaper.
- 2:13:52So we're gonna work till 7: Be like, I I'm being courageous.
- 2:13:54So we're gonna work till 7: I don't stand for them.
- 2:13:55So we're gonna work till 7: I'm gonna be independent and I'm gonna be the one who's like, You know what, I'm hooking up my D ring and I'm gonna, It don't matter.
- 2:14:03So we're gonna work till 7: Maybe all of these workers over here, they might be fine.
- 2:14:07So we're gonna work till 7: And they may have maybe have, they worked for 25 years, but no incident.
- 2:14:11So we're gonna work till 7: That's great.
- 2:14:12So we're gonna work till 7: I can only control myself, so I'm gonna be independent.
- 2:14:15So we're gonna work till 7: And even though they're gonna ra me and say, Oh, safety Sam over here . Right.
- 2:14:21So we're gonna work till 7: Or, or like whatever it is.
- 2:14:24So we're gonna work till 7: If, if we don't normalize that behavior, we can never overcome it.
- 2:14:29So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:14:30So we're gonna work till 7: We'll always be, always be, always be fighting it because why the ideal.
- 2:14:35So we're gonna work till 7: Construction worker sits on a beam and has lunch.
- 2:14:38So we're gonna work till 7: And that's what we put in museums that celebrate.
- 2:14:41So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm not saying the workers that did that were wrong.
- 2:14:44So we're gonna work till 7: That just is what it was at the time.
- 2:14:46So we're gonna work till 7: And we should celebrate it because they, they're, they because they did their jobs.
- 2:14:51So we're gonna work till 7: We can do our jobs now.
- 2:14:52So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:14:52So we're gonna work till 7: But now we understand the risk.
- 2:14:56So we're gonna work till 7: We understand the issue.
- 2:14:58So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:14:58So we're gonna work till 7: And we understand, Hey Herby, you got an issue.
- 2:15:01So we're gonna work till 7: You're slower than others.
- 2:15:03So we're gonna work till 7: What is, what is it about your situation that we can help?
- 2:15:08So we're gonna work till 7: And the only way to do that is to be courageous.
- 2:15:10So we're gonna work till 7: And, and you have to be like, even, and in the book, Herby is like, No, don't look at my bag.
- 2:15:16So we're gonna work till 7: Like, No, you can't, you can't touch my stuff.
- 2:15:18So we're gonna work till 7: Once they open the bag, they're like, You gotta bake beans.
- 2:15:21So we're gonna work till 7: You got, you got iron skillet in here, You got all kinds of stuff.
- 2:15:26So we're gonna work till 7: And then until they admitted that Herbi was the slowest, then they all had to agree.
- 2:15:31So we're gonna work till 7: But they also had to agree that Herbi is critical to our success of our goal.
- 2:15:36So we're gonna work till 7: We can't leave Herbi behind because if we leave Herbi behind we don't accomplish the goal.
- 2:15:42So we're gonna work till 7: Herbie is back there.
- 2:15:43So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:15:44So we're gonna work till 7: We still coming in.
- 2:15:45So we're gonna work till 7: So we have to accept the current condition as it is Right now, as a situation and lower the stigmas of, of just, just grind it out.
- 2:15:57So we're gonna work till 7: Just figure it out.
- 2:15:59So we're gonna work till 7: Just go faster.
- 2:16:00So we're gonna work till 7: Just run your heart rate up.
- 2:16:02So we're gonna work till 7: Like what are you, bring your purse, And we can be men and be leaders at the same time.
- 2:16:08So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:16:09So we're gonna work till 7: Two critical thoughts that are in my head.
- 2:16:11So we're gonna work till 7: One is, you know, it's easier for me to think about it in terms of just being a better human , right?
- 2:16:19So we're gonna work till 7: Like, because the men, the masculinity and all the identity stuff like that can, that's, that had me playing a different way and I was playing a bad game.
- 2:16:30So we're gonna work till 7: But thinking in terms of how do I apply those traits to better serve another human being?
- 2:16:37So we're gonna work till 7: It's a different view.
- 2:16:38So we're gonna work till 7: How can I serve somebody?
- 2:16:41So we're gonna work till 7: And then like this whole Herby situation, the question was not how do we go faster?
- 2:16:48So we're gonna work till 7: The question was how do we help herbi?
- 2:16:51So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:16:52So we're gonna work till 7: What often happens is Herbie gets cut and replaced, Right?
- 2:16:57So we're gonna work till 7: Ignore the problem, ignore the problem, ignore the problem.
- 2:17:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:17:00So we're gonna work till 7: Just fire herbi.
- 2:17:01So we're gonna work till 7: Give another one to Herbie.
- 2:17:03So we're gonna work till 7: But guess what?
- 2:17:04So we're gonna work till 7: You're gonna have somebody else come in and they're still gonna be one slowest person all the time.
- 2:17:10So we're gonna work till 7: It's gonna move around.
- 2:17:11So we're gonna work till 7: It's gonna move around.
- 2:17:13So we're gonna work till 7: So to your, to using your words, except the current condition as it is, and help the person with the problem.
- 2:17:23So we're gonna work till 7: And, and we gotta surface it, right?
- 2:17:25So we're gonna work till 7: I mean, you know, I think of people that I've lost in my life to suicide and a very recent situation, and I knew he was suffering.
- 2:17:34So we're gonna work till 7: I could see it 100%.
- 2:17:37So we're gonna work till 7: And you know, the number of times that I said, Hey man, I can see that you're hurting.
- 2:17:41So we're gonna work till 7: Like.
- 2:17:42So we're gonna work till 7: If you need or when you need somebody to talk to, I'm here for you.
- 2:17:46So we're gonna work till 7: The number of times I did that were zero.
- 2:17:48So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:17:49So we're gonna work till 7: And so the appropriate thing to do would have been to say, Hey brother, I see you suffering.
- 2:17:55So we're gonna work till 7: How can I help you?
- 2:17:56So we're gonna work till 7: But we don't do that.
- 2:17:58So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:17:58So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:17:58So we're gonna work till 7: We, we don't say, And we can see it , we see people suffering in their performance.
- 2:18:06So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:18:06So we're gonna work till 7: And we don't ask, how can I help?
- 2:18:08So we're gonna work till 7: Or even if they if they say I'm fine.
- 2:18:12So we're gonna work till 7: Be like, I'm not accepting that.
- 2:18:14So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:18:15So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:18:15So we're gonna work till 7: Cause we're courageous.
- 2:18:17So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:18:17So we're gonna work till 7: Absolutely strong.
- 2:18:19So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:18:20So we're gonna work till 7: Different.
- 2:18:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's a shift.
- 2:18:21So we're gonna work till 7: It's a total shift in mindset.
- 2:18:23So we're gonna work till 7: How can I help you versus self preservation and how can I replace you?
- 2:18:28So we're gonna work till 7: I have to, I can say the same story.
- 2:18:30So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:18:31So we're gonna work till 7: And many of us can.
- 2:18:33So we're gonna work till 7: Many of us can.
- 2:18:34So we're gonna work till 7: And you asked those questions after the fact.
- 2:18:37So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:18:38So we're gonna work till 7: Right?
- 2:18:38So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:18:39So we're gonna work till 7: How do we do that?
- 2:18:40So we're gonna work till 7: We we, we, we'd be like, Alex and I'll, I'll end this chapter with what he does.
- 2:18:47So we're gonna work till 7: And he confronts the fact, he says, Herby slowest, What's in your bag?
- 2:18:53So we're gonna work till 7: Herpes.
- 2:18:53So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Nah, it's mine.
- 2:18:55So we're gonna work till 7: I'm fine.
- 2:18:56So we're gonna work till 7: I'll keep going.
- 2:18:57So we're gonna work till 7: Nah, nah.
- 2:18:58So we're gonna work till 7: What's in your bag?
- 2:18:59So we're gonna work till 7: Open it up.
- 2:18:59So we're gonna work till 7: And they're like, they pull all this stuff out.
- 2:19:01So we're gonna work till 7: They give it to the fast kids.
- 2:19:03So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Here, you take this, spread it out.
- 2:19:05So we're gonna work till 7: There's like 20 scouts spread out the love.
- 2:19:09So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:19:09So we're gonna work till 7: Which I mean, spread the load out.
- 2:19:11So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:19:12So we're gonna work till 7: And it's.
- 2:19:13So we're gonna work till 7: Having an extra can of pork and beans in your backpack.
- 2:19:17So we're gonna work till 7: Not gonna slow you down much.
- 2:19:19So we're gonna work till 7: Might a little bit, but not much.
- 2:19:21So we're gonna work till 7: Right, Right.
- 2:19:22So we're gonna work till 7: But having all of that burden removed from her.
- 2:19:25So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:19:26So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:19:27So we're gonna work till 7: And not only did they do that, they took Herbie, put 'em in the front, the line.
- 2:19:31So we're gonna work till 7: That herbi, you're the most important scout out here.
- 2:19:35So we're gonna work till 7: You're number one.
- 2:19:36So we're gonna work till 7: You're going front and you're gonna lead us.
- 2:19:38So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:19:38So we're gonna work till 7: Can you imagine what that did to number, like, take, take the burden off of Herbi.
- 2:19:43So we're gonna work till 7: And they were making fun of, They're calling em names.
- 2:19:45So we're gonna work till 7: They were.
- 2:19:46So we're gonna work till 7: They were like, Well, you're slow.
- 2:19:47So we're gonna work till 7: And like, and it's like Alex is the leader.
- 2:19:51So we're gonna work till 7: He's like, he makes this statement.
- 2:19:53So we're gonna work till 7: He's, the idea of the hike is not to see who can get there the fastest.
- 2:19:57So we're gonna work till 7: It's the idea that we get there together.
- 2:20:00So we're gonna work till 7: Yep.
- 2:20:00So we're gonna work till 7: We're not a bunch of individuals out there.
- 2:20:03So we're gonna work till 7: We're a team.
- 2:20:04So we're gonna work till 7: And the team does not arrive in camp until all of us arrive.
- 2:20:08So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:20:08So we're gonna work till 7: And when a leader makes that kind of statement . People freaking fall in line.
- 2:20:14So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:20:14So we're gonna work till 7: And be like, Yeah, give me the, gimme the iron skillet.
- 2:20:18So we're gonna work till 7: Give this boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 2:20:21So we're gonna work till 7: Herbi front of the line.
- 2:20:22So we're gonna work till 7: That's how Herbi feels.
- 2:20:24So we're gonna work till 7: Herby felt at that moment.
- 2:20:25So we're gonna work till 7: He's like, Yeah.
- 2:20:26So we're gonna work till 7: Puts his pack on.
- 2:20:27So we're gonna work till 7: Oh yeah.
- 2:20:28So we're gonna work till 7: And then he is in front, so he is like, There's no pressure.
- 2:20:32So we're gonna work till 7: And they're like, they start encouraging him.
- 2:20:35So we're gonna work till 7: Say, Herby, let's go.
- 2:20:37So we're gonna work till 7: You got it.
- 2:20:38So we're gonna work till 7: Like, they're, they're not, they're behind.
- 2:20:40So we're gonna work till 7: We're behind you.
- 2:20:41So we're gonna work till 7: We can't go faster.
- 2:20:42So we're gonna work till 7: We're not gonna leave you in the dust.
- 2:20:44So we're gonna work till 7: We're a team.
- 2:20:45So we're gonna work till 7: . And I'm, I, I wanna leave it on that.
- 2:20:47So we're gonna work till 7: Because when we do that, And I'll share examples.
- 2:20:51So we're gonna work till 7: We found Herbi on my project.
- 2:20:54So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:20:54So we're gonna work till 7: Actually we found multiple herbes and we started to, instead of firing herbi.
- 2:21:00So we're gonna work till 7: And just gimme another one.
- 2:21:01So we're gonna work till 7: Just gimme another one.
- 2:21:03So we're gonna work till 7: We made some a ments.
- 2:21:06So we're gonna work till 7: I like to drop the J.
- 2:21:08So we're gonna work till 7: We made some adjustments to our decision.
- 2:21:12So we're gonna work till 7: And did it require changing the cpm?
- 2:21:14So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:21:15So we're gonna work till 7: Did it require my job?
- 2:21:17So we're gonna work till 7: Got put on the line.
- 2:21:18So we're gonna work till 7: They're like, Hey, you're gonna do this like it's on you.
- 2:21:22So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm, and I'll tell the story of the next session, Once we relieved the constraint on a series of bottlenecks reduction.
- 2:21:32So we're gonna work till 7: Throughput increased.
- 2:21:34So we're gonna work till 7: Yes.
- 2:21:35So we're gonna work till 7: And I learned that, I learned this theory from this hike, and then I, all of a sudden I confronted resistance because there are people who are in greater power than I who were tied to that initial biased . Original plan.
- 2:21:54So we're gonna work till 7: And if I wanted to change it based on current condition, I'm gonna have to take this responsibility on my own.
- 2:22:01So we're gonna work till 7: And if it screws up, it's, it's on your ass, Thomas.
- 2:22:04So we're gonna work till 7: And I'm like, I don't care.
- 2:22:05So we're gonna work till 7: Like I already figured it out.
- 2:22:06So we're gonna work till 7: Like, we're gonna be rock stars and spoil our alert.
- 2:22:10So we're gonna work till 7: We did . Yeah.
- 2:22:11So we're gonna work till 7: But that took a whole bunch of being vulnerable and having courage.
- 2:22:16So we're gonna work till 7: Like admitting the current situation.
- 2:22:19So we're gonna work till 7: Like, Hey, we have constraints, we have problems.
- 2:22:21So we're gonna work till 7: And like not being a coward about it either.
- 2:22:24So we're gonna work till 7: Right.
- 2:22:25So we're gonna work till 7: Like, could we have fired this trade?
- 2:22:27So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah.
- 2:22:27So we're gonna work till 7: And gotten a new one.
- 2:22:29So we're gonna work till 7: Maybe.
- 2:22:30So we're gonna work till 7: Would that have helped the situation?
- 2:22:31So we're gonna work till 7: No, absolutely not.
- 2:22:32So we're gonna work till 7: Taken a few times long, it would've made it worse.
- 2:22:34So we're gonna work till 7: So, , what do you think?
- 2:22:35So we're gonna work till 7: Like what are your final thoughts about the hike and kind of like what we talk about?
- 2:22:40So we're gonna work till 7: Cause there was a lot unpack there.
- 2:22:42So we're gonna work till 7: Yeah, I mean we, we talked about, kind of started with the paradigm shift, right?
- 2:22:46So we're gonna work till 7: And so paradigm shift is how do I serve for me?
- 2:22:50So we're gonna work till 7: And talking about the distribution of the burden.
- 2:22:54So we're gonna work till 7: Like I guess maybe to the individual out there that is like taking it off of the job site.
- 2:23:01So we're gonna work till 7: Those people, cuz I used to be one of 'em.
- 2:23:03So we're gonna work till 7: And every now and then I like to do it that are carrying all this burden all by myself.
- 2:23:10So we're gonna work till 7: It's okay to ask for help, right?
- 2:23:12So we're gonna work till 7: It takes en like, it's difficult for me to let people look in my bag and help me with all the garbage that I'm carrying.
- 2:23:20So we're gonna work till 7: So it takes courage, but it's what I need.
- 2:23:23So we're gonna work till 7: And so for people out there that are carrying that burden all by themselves, invite somebody in to share the load.
- 2:23:32So we're gonna work till 7: And for other people that see people carrying that burden, that weight, reach out and offer, lend a hand.
- 2:23:40So we're gonna work till 7: Yes, Be strong, be strong and the, and you're gonna have a stubborn, proud Jesse that's say, Oh, I'm good.
- 2:23:46So we're gonna work till 7: I got it back off.
- 2:23:47So we're gonna work till 7: Buying your own business like.

- 2:24:25So we're gonna work till 7: And so back to the point you made about normalizing if doing those small actions on a regular basis, you start normalizing this, this behavior of compassion and appreciation for another human being.
- 2:24:39So we're gonna work till 7: And it's gonna be uncomfortable.
- 2:24:40So we're gonna work till 7: You're gonna look like the big softy, the babysitter, but you're not a babysitter.
- 2:24:45So we're gonna work till 7: You're a human helping out another freaking human.
- 2:24:47So we're gonna work till 7: Like, come on man.
