- 0:00Speaker 1: And we welcome you to our first live edition of
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Men's Hockey Coaching Show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: And we have a new location.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We have moved down from here on Front Street from
- 0:09Speaker 1: barbecue to Italian.
- 0:10Speaker 2: One of the classic Hartford restaurants.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Carbone's Ristorante that used to be on Franklin Ave in
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hartford from the late 30s to the pandemic. And now
- 0:18Speaker 1: they're open here at the corner of Columbus Boulevard and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Front Street. And this place, it used to be the
- 0:23Speaker 1: old movie theater here across the street from Capitol Grill.
- 0:25Speaker 1: But what a great job they have done. And they
- 0:27Speaker 1: have welcomed us with open arms. I know You did
- 0:30Speaker 1: your donor event here, and welcome. Here we go.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Nice job thinking of this place.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Vinny and his staff has done a beautiful job here,
- 0:38Speaker 3: and it's nice to have Carbone's open in Hartford again.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Sure is. Did you ever eat here before?
- 0:43Speaker 3: I ate at the old Carbone's.
- 0:44Speaker 2: That's right. You've been here since 14. Yeah. Yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:47Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Well, we're three weeks in to the college hockey season.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It was not an easy start. You had the Icebreaker event,
- 0:54Speaker 1: two games with Colorado College ranked last week, and then
- 0:56Speaker 1: two with BU, and it doesn't.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Get any easier the next three weeks.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Before you go to Ireland, but with this mix of veterans,
- 1:03Speaker 1: a lot of new guys still trying to tinker a
- 1:06Speaker 1: little bit and guys getting comfortable. What have you liked
- 1:09Speaker 1: so far? You, you, you okay with, with the way
- 1:11Speaker 1: the guys have played despite the results, like you win
- 1:14Speaker 1: Friday and you lose Saturday and three straight weekends.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah. I think that we are improving and you know, we,
- 1:19Speaker 3: you and I were just talking off air. I thought
- 1:22Speaker 3: actually our game on Saturday was structurally better than our
- 1:26Speaker 3: game on Thursday night. The one we won. We didn't
- 1:30Speaker 3: give up as many chances Saturday. And I thought we created,
- 1:35Speaker 3: I thought we got into our offensive zone play a
- 1:37Speaker 3: lot more. We created some multiple shot shifts. I thought
- 1:41Speaker 3: our special teams were decent. And, you know, we just
- 1:44Speaker 3: got to keep improving. We've gone from, I was looking
- 1:47Speaker 3: at it last year, and as far as college hockey experience,
- 1:52Speaker 3: we were 18th in the country for amount of games
- 1:55Speaker 3: played by our, you know, when you lose, he slips.
- 1:58Speaker 3: and Percival and Massinio and Frazier and Tattle, guys that
- 2:03Speaker 3: have played 150 games in their careers, and now we're
- 2:07Speaker 3: 48th in the country when it comes to games played
- 2:09Speaker 3: and experience.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But one guy with 100, and that's Joey.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it. He's the only one on our team
- 2:14Speaker 3: with 100 games. Now, some others, like Shahan will get
- 2:17Speaker 3: there and Gardula will get there and Whitcomb, but right
- 2:21Speaker 3: now there's still kind of a, you know, This team,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I would say, is like in the embryonic stages of
- 2:29Speaker 3: building our brand.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Speaking of Ryan, it was good to see him the
- 2:35Speaker 2: other day.
- 2:35Speaker 1: First intermission, I got up, Adam did his thing, and
- 2:38Speaker 1: I was going to go upstairs, see who was up there,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and I see Ryan Tattle coming down the stairs. It
- 2:41Speaker 1: was great to see him, and he's playing with Providence now, huh?
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I came over Friday night and watched a couple
- 2:47Speaker 3: periods of his game against the Wolfpack, and I thought
- 2:49Speaker 3: he played really well.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I just love the attitude that he always brought. He
- 2:52Speaker 2: just had that, you know, ranked B darned.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yeah, he played with an edge and you know we
- 2:59Speaker 3: miss him like you always do. We miss Hudson Chandler
- 3:02Speaker 3: but now it's time for other guys to step up
- 3:04Speaker 3: and replace those minutes.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Game one of the BU series was Thursday. Entertaining from
- 3:09Speaker 1: a fan standpoint. Maybe not so much from the coach's
- 3:11Speaker 1: standpoint because of the 50 shots on net.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Team never trailed. That's the good news.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Lost a two goal lead in the third but won
- 3:18Speaker 1: in overtime but as you mentioned the structure and Just
- 3:22Speaker 1: give the fans a little bit of insight that for
- 3:24Speaker 1: the pseudo hockey fan, you talk structure on both ends
- 3:28Speaker 1: of the ice. You just didn't like what you saw
- 3:30Speaker 1: in that department. It seems like at least in the
- 3:33Speaker 1: first couple of games, it's getting better.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah, we're starting to get better. And naturally, when you
- 3:37Speaker 3: have a lot of new guys, you have to play.
- 3:39Speaker 3: We try to say there should always be five guys
- 3:41Speaker 3: in the screen. You know, when you're watching the film,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you should have five guys in the screen, whether you're
- 3:46Speaker 3: playing in the defensive zone, the neutral zone or the
- 3:49Speaker 3: offensive zone. If you're playing connected, you're going to see
- 3:52Speaker 3: five guys. And a lot of times this year, we haven't.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And that's just because it's going to be a learning
- 4:00Speaker 3: process for some of the newer guys. And they don't
- 4:02Speaker 3: know the nuances of our D zone or how we necessarily,
- 4:06Speaker 3: how quick we want to play through the neutral zone offensively.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And our structure, there's so much of the game, 95%
- 4:14Speaker 3: of the game, you played without the puck.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 4:17Speaker 3: You got to know where you should be positionally without
- 4:20Speaker 3: the puck. Those are the great players, are the players
- 4:24Speaker 3: that know how to play away from the puck. Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You had a lot of snipes. Ethan Whitcomb's first goal
- 4:29Speaker 1: was spectacular. Caden Shahan, who we'll talk to later in
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Coaches Show, fabulous play to make it 2-1. It
- 4:36Speaker 1: started with him taking the puck away from Frechette of
- 4:38Speaker 1: BU right along the boards and then sniping one off. Later,
- 4:41Speaker 1: it was Trey Scott, a nice give-and-go with Ethan Gardula,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Carlin DeZane. That pass that Blay made, I just like
- 4:49Speaker 1: the smarts that DeZane made. He missed the pass, but
- 4:53Speaker 1: then he played it off the boards, got by two defensemen, scored,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and then, of course, Joey with a wonderful shot in
- 5:00Speaker 1: the bumper area between the circles from Mike Murtag and
- 5:04Speaker 1: Trey Scott set a really good screen. And you talked
- 5:06Speaker 1: about this in the pregame show the other night. It's
- 5:08Speaker 1: not uncommon that a defenseman will set a screen like
- 5:10Speaker 1: that in three-on-three because that's just the nature of the game.
- 5:13Speaker 3: It can happen, right. All three players are basically positionless.
- 5:18Speaker 3: We try to have two forwards and a defenseman out there,
- 5:21Speaker 3: just because if you have three forwards, none of them
- 5:23Speaker 3: are thinking defense. But your defensemen have to get involved
- 5:28Speaker 3: offensively if you're going to be successful in three-on-three.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And Trey's kind of a good guy for that.
- 5:35Speaker 3: He is, and so is Kai, and so is Anthony,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and they can all skate. We do have some defensemen
- 5:42Speaker 3: that certainly will excel in that area.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Now, the Saturday game, BU had a couple of nice goals.
- 5:47Speaker 1: They got off to a fast start. Wonderful pass by
- 5:51Speaker 1: Caleb Malhotra to Charlie Trethewey for the first goal, second goal.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I thought Aiden Celebriti made a really good pass using the,
- 5:59Speaker 1: if you see in college hockey now, they have the
- 6:01Speaker 1: trapezoid behind the goal where the goalie has to stay.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He can't go to the corners and get it. He
- 6:06Speaker 1: played it right off about the line and it came
- 6:08Speaker 1: right in on net. And I thought that was, I
- 6:10Speaker 1: don't know if he did that on purpose, but it
- 6:12Speaker 1: sure looked pretty good.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And then I think he was certainly trying to play
- 6:16Speaker 3: it off the end boards. I don't think he was
- 6:18Speaker 3: trying to play it back to the short side. I
- 6:20Speaker 3: think it was supposed to come out the other side.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And that's what kind of fooled the goaltender and our defenseman. Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And then, you know, the goal that made it 5-1,
- 6:29Speaker 1: Jack Carvey just made a great individual play battling one
- 6:32Speaker 1: of your defensemen, and the backhand was just ridiculously good.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But you never quit. because you thought you played well.
- 6:39Speaker 2: You got to 5-2.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You got to 5-3 on the 5-minute major. And that
- 6:44Speaker 1: was a pretty good 4 minutes of hockey there.
- 6:46Speaker 2: It was 4-on-4 for a minute.
- 6:48Speaker 3: We had some great chances at 4-on-4.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And Yegorov played well. He did.
- 6:52Speaker 3: And then we had Gardula was all alone. When it
- 6:55Speaker 3: was 5-3, we found him all alone in front. And
- 6:58Speaker 3: he made a good save on him. Made another good
- 7:00Speaker 3: save on Shahan. So, you know, we kept coming. And
- 7:04Speaker 3: in the Throughout the whole game, our bench never got down.
- 7:08Speaker 3: That's one thing I was very encouraged about, that they
- 7:11Speaker 3: never got to a point where they started hanging their heads.
- 7:15Speaker 3: They just kept playing the way we want to play,
- 7:18Speaker 3: regardless of the score. And that's a good sign going forward,
- 7:22Speaker 3: I think.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Are you better at forechecking right now than you were, say,
- 7:25Speaker 1: three weeks ago as a team?
- 7:27Speaker 3: No question. And we're better in the defensive zone, and
- 7:29Speaker 3: we're better on face-offs, even though we missed an assignment
- 7:32Speaker 3: on their fourth goal last night. You know, we blew
- 7:35Speaker 3: an assignment off a face-off, and that's how a guy
- 7:37Speaker 3: got wide open. But we will continue to get better
- 7:40Speaker 3: and improve in those areas.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 7:42Speaker 1: All right, we're here with Mike Cavanaugh. We're live at
- 7:44Speaker 1: Carbone's in downtown Hartford. Later, you'll hear a couple of
- 7:47Speaker 1: recorded interviews with Caden Sheahan, who's off to a fabulous start,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and his buddy from Sioux City, Ethan Gardulo.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Did they come as a package deal, by the way?
- 7:56Speaker 3: No. Caden played there a year before Ethan. Okay. So
- 8:00Speaker 3: I don't think they knew each other until Ethan went
- 8:03Speaker 3: out there. Okay, gotcha.
- 8:05Speaker 1: All right, back with Cav here in just a minute
- 8:06Speaker 1: as you're listening to the UConn Hockey Coaches Show live
- 8:09Speaker 1: in Hartford on Learfield.
