- 3:31I have won ten to fifty train for an incidental's hard for the Philadelphia
- 3:36they are to be sure of that a good transportation. I rented a car
- 3:38that's item two fifty bucks a posit. The thirty five mile drive south on
- 3:43Rock forty seven was on avent Wall. My finally train left on the Mineland's
- 3:46main street, Landis Avenue, Mineland behind a sunny southern Jersey And at least
- 3:51that's what the sign said. It's a busy little city Landis Avenue or busy
- 3:54street. Finally, I stamped at a mobile gas station on the forest of
- 3:58town to ask about the address Bend Spingle had given me. Just keep going
- 4:00straight out Landis Avenue for about five six miles and you come to East Violin
- 4:04east Field. Yeah, and then you turn right go about a mile mile
- 4:08and a half. You can't miss if you can pick it out from the
- 4:10rest of the poultry part a lot of them. Uh, Bryan, Land's
- 4:13the egg basket of the world. Where do you suppose Philadelphia, New York
- 4:16and the rest get all their eggs and chicken. Yeah, well I better
- 4:18get under white. Thanks a lot anytime? Is this against attendance? Was
- 4:26right? There were enough chicken ranches in the on lying sections to supply half
- 4:29a dozen cities, and trying to break out the one belonging to Ben Pringle
- 4:32was the problem. Pinto asked for the directions. I pulled up at the
- 4:35nearest farmhouse. Yeah, where you want. I'm looking for mister ben Pringle's
- 4:46place, far Bend a Pringle. He's right next to why the poor man
- 4:51for man. Yes, he's a coming down here from New York. He's
- 4:55to spend all his money, and what happens, he's a gonna lose his
- 4:58clock. Doesn't know much about raising chickens. Huh ah, he'sn't done no
- 5:00nothing, Joe, my old man. He's gonna try to sell him when
- 5:03he come here. It's to think more than the money to raise the chicken.
- 5:08So why don't he get out? Why don't he sell out before he
- 5:11spend the arms, the money and lose everything? You U think that's what
- 5:15he ought to do? Missus z a new cheer and soothing, my older
- 5:17than man. He's chill and soothling. What's your name Johnny Dowling. And
- 5:21then if you're more newt telling him, who's like all of that? Honey?
- 5:25Mean ah, they make some money in the big cippy that wants to
- 5:28do what you call retire on it so sore they coming down here, buy
- 5:31a nice a piece of farm landers. We got the blendy nice of farm
- 5:34land here as you do. So they think all of the need is some
- 5:38chicken houses, some chicken feed, and then all of they gotta do is
- 5:42collect with the eggs. They'll make a lot of money. But it's not
- 5:45that easy. Huh. Then the pretty m he's in a listen to us
- 5:47anymore, he's gonna lose his flock. He's gonna have to sell out cheap.
- 5:51He's gonna lose his shirt, and his farm goes to rack and roll.
- 5:55Uh huh. And that's when it's somebody else that comes in. Somebody
- 5:59he's a how to raise the chickens. They buy him up cheap. Oh
- 6:03is that how you got this big place of yours? I'm sure who started
- 6:08with a little blazer who work hard, We make a little money. Then
- 6:12when somebody like him comes along, we brought him out. We got a
- 6:15nice and bigger place that sort of thing happened very often around here, missus
- 6:18Renzoli. Oh sure, all of the time. You ask a Tony Pasqually.
- 6:23Now he's got a big phone. You asked the comment Srnio, say
- 6:27anything, you know, Tommy Burns, we asking him say anything, say
- 6:31anything, doesn't matter. Huh. Oh, I was just thinking, missus
- 6:36Renzolie. It's uh pretty much to your advantage to see these people go broke,
- 6:41isn't it. No, you're just the one man. Mike doesn't look.
- 6:44I don't know who you are, what you want? What's your business?
- 6:46Business? Is finding out why Ben Pringle's having trouble. Maybe who is
- 6:49causing you get out again? I don't like it the way you talk.
- 6:51I don't think I like you. Yeah, maybe you like it even less
- 6:56after I talked to Ben Prangle. How about that get out? Bye?
- 7:04Jolly, I'm glad you can make it, Johnny, Yeah, do that?
- 7:09Yeah? Hey, Well for what I hear, Ben, you're having
- 7:13a pretty rough time. Oh I suppose my own fault, Johnny walking into
- 7:16a project like this without knowing more about it. How deep have you gone
- 7:20into this way? Oh? My two dude, Johnny twod all in all
- 7:23I've spent nearly forty thousand. That's it's about all I have, and most
- 7:27of us had to go for replacing my herd. Her Yeah, I heard
- 7:30of chickens song, and I thought it'd be so easy, you know,
- 7:33just buy a few hundred chicken, Yeah, throw them some feet like the
- 7:36eggs, collect the money, Yes, and I'd be fixed up for a
- 7:39lot. Oh dear, there are more diseases the chicken can catch. You're
- 7:43more lice and bugs, and there is Hey, Ben, you uh,
- 7:46you said somebody something about somebody's trying to put you out of business side Johnny,
- 7:50and I am sure of it. But why, I don't know.
- 7:53I didn't know I had an enemy in the world. What's going wrong?
- 7:56We'll just waiting to see when I heard the chickens And if you don't agree
- 7:59with me, who I'm sure with me about what? That they're being poisoned
- 8:05by home? I think kind of you see well, by somebody would like
- 8:09to see me ego broke so that he could buy you out cheap. Who
- 8:13Ben, I'll tell you who, because he wants to add my property to
- 8:16his. And he's right next door. And his name is Joe Rim Zulie
- 8:26fact tool off yours truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment, and now for
- 8:30another episode in the life of Progeant Donald Bellweather. My husband riba, riba,
- 8:43what is it? Donald can't found and Rebe can't find the fountain fan.
- 8:48I've looked all through this desk. Here it is. You must have
- 8:52used it as a marker when you were reading this book. See this great
- 8:56literary classic six gun showdown at Powder River Gully. All right, never mind
- 9:01about my reading habits. Just look at the coverage we're going to get with
- 9:03this new auto accident policy. Let's see, we have collision fifty dollars deductible.
- 9:09All right, that's public live building, property damage, medical benefits.
- 9:13Brotherwoods, we have complete coverage. That's right. Of course, it's been
- 9:16a cost as money. I'm sending the company a check right now. Gee,
- 9:20it's too bad we don't live in Rhode Island. Rude Island. What
- 9:24Oh, because then our rate to be lower. Rhode Island has less accidents
- 9:26per capita than any other state. Oh, which state has the highest?
- 9:31Oh we see, yeah, huh here it is Nevada. No body,
- 9:33I mean Nevada's second highest. Alaska has the most really, I didn't know
- 9:37that. You know, it's just too bad. We can't eliminate traffic accidents
- 9:41completely. Not only would it saved life and land, but it'll be a
- 9:43lot less straight in the pocketbook. Yeah, that's for sure. These automobile
- 9:48accident polities get more expensive every year just because there's so many costly accidents.
- 9:52Well, I'm glad we've got some good insurance coverage, Donald, but just
- 9:54remember one thing. Oh what's that? Well, some auto accidents ruin a
- 9:58fender in the family. It's true, very true. But as far as
- 10:03I'm concerned, I don't want any of your old insurance money. I want
- 10:07you here at home, safe and sound. We'll always drive carefully, won't
- 10:11you will be? That's my Donald, that's my Donald. No act too
- 10:28of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and the sick chick matter. Then you're
- 10:39assurance, Joel and Julie. I'm gonna kill off your flop. But you
- 10:43want to business your insine and I'm sure, but just waiting to see him,
- 10:48Johnny, I have got the sickest her the chickens you ever saw.
- 10:52Okay, Beny, let's take a look at them. I'm afraid I don't
- 10:54know much about the credit. You don't have to. Anybody could tell just
- 10:56anybody. Come on, come on, have you talked with a red about
- 11:01sure? I have the finest vat in the caddy too. Doctor gold Haft,
- 11:05why he has a regularlaboratories, knowing all in the world. He's the
- 11:07one that cured him with the colera and the hepatitis and the sinoditis and the
- 11:11cock of the titus. Closest Johnny, after I've called him in so many
- 11:16times, he even gave me a book. A book, Yes he did,
- 11:18so that i'd know what all the diseases were, and well, so
- 11:22I wouldn't have to make him drive all the way out here when I'd just
- 11:26forgotten to give the hens they laying man sure or enough water or something like
- 11:30that. You'd forget me. Well, no, wonder you've had trouble with
- 11:33your fly. And I guess I was kind of nuisance still too, But
- 11:37I did so want my herd to be a good woman. Lay a lot
- 11:41of eggs for me? Or what does the vets say about what ails them?
- 11:45Now? Well, I haven't told him. You haven't told him,
- 11:48and said I'm gonna fold. I still know him. Was a pretty big
- 11:50bold. Yeah. But look, man, I looked in the book.
- 11:54I looked in the book, Johnny, and there's nothing in it about the
- 11:56way they are. There is not a word. And that's why I sent
- 12:01for you. But then I told you I don't know anything about them.
- 12:03Of course, if you're right, if they're being poisoned. Oh, let's
- 12:07take a look at it. Yes, yes, you'll see, you'll see.
- 12:13You get a nice looking layout. I'll say that, nice new houses
- 12:16from they fenced in yards or whatever you call them. And there's plenty of
- 12:20wrong for them. Oh yeah, yeah, yes, see, you see
- 12:26they're also sad looking. They're just so sad and petulant because there they're holding
- 12:31against me for whatever it was, and it was cool little things. So
- 12:37help, bunny, I've never seen it. The chickens ever suffer from the
- 12:41blind staggers in the blind step. But I mean my horses get old,
- 12:43No, sir, No, I'm sure, because it isn't in the book.
- 12:46If it isn't in the book. Yeah, and you're sure you haven't
- 12:50been spiking they're drinking water with some of your private styles, Why of course
- 12:54not, Johnny. You know you are my one insurance contact. But always
- 12:58suggested the never that bottle you're getting it's oh now, john boy, he's
- 13:03chicken shore loock. Hey, you said you feed him a laying man.
- 13:07It's right here this ship, he say, Come on, but what are
- 13:11you thinking about? Oh? Any of that stuff should get good and wet
- 13:13and for met Oh no, no, no, it's is sweet and drys
- 13:16the day I've bought it from Jake Rubenofah, and I see there, you
- 13:20see what I mean. Where's Jake Rubinof. He's the biggest feed deal in
- 13:24time. Yeah, certainly smells all right, It is all right, Oh
- 13:28noses, donny, my herd has been poisoned. And you suspect you're and
- 13:33CILLI on the next part. Of course, wasn't he one of the people
- 13:37who tried to help you get started when you first came down. Oh sure,
- 13:39sure, sure, yes you pretended to. But I can see now
- 13:41it is just to look over my nice place. See how much you can
- 13:46get his hands on when I go broke, or if you had some concrete
- 13:48reason for thinking he might be poisoning your font. I've seen him, yes,
- 13:52I have. I've seen him in my own eyes. Come right over
- 13:54here at night several time and scatter something over the fence into my tents out
- 14:01of a big sack. That was it. Now the time was daylight and
- 14:03I could see the chickens eat me. You're sure it was Renzula? Of
- 14:07course I am. Oh, sure, Dan, I'm going over and talk
- 14:11with him. I went back to the farm next door. I found Joe
- 14:18and Zuli one of his sheds. It's tall, husky and well tanned.
- 14:20He was hard at work building some kind of an affair with a large wooden
- 14:22frame. There. He's a finish. Like I say, mister thoughter,
- 14:28you're keeping the chickens in the cage up off the ground. They're more healthy.
- 14:33You get them more fack bruting a better price in the market. Yeah.
- 14:39How you like that? Eh? I asked you a question, mister
- 14:41Nzuoli, I had like an answer. No, all right, all right,
- 14:46I tell you I think you better. He's because I try to help
- 14:50the poor man without he's a find out. So I thought over the fence
- 14:54at night when he's an o C flow water over the fence. Wow,
- 14:58yeah, I'm more, he said. Suck you see in this one x
- 15:05l N see why the girls suffer. That's right. Invitamins find them.
- 15:09He's a chickens, they're sick. You don't know what to do. He's
- 15:13a waste dollars of money. He's a nice palace, or I help him.
- 15:18You're sure that bag doesn't contain some kind of poison oisison? Yeah?
- 15:22No, what'd you get that stuff? Jack Rubin or feed store? What
- 15:24do you try to accuse me of? Nothing? Yet, I'm gonna try
- 15:28to help the poor man, that's all. You don't like round? I
- 15:30want to sample of that. Sure, they go there want So what are
- 15:33you gonna do? It's too late now, But in the morning, I'm
- 15:35gonna take it into town to the feet Price and check on it. You
- 15:37go ahead and believe me if there's anything wrong with it, I'm coming back
- 15:39here with the police in tall if at least you better talk right so they
- 15:43you don't understand. You don't know. It's smaller pates like this. You
- 15:48gotta stay friends with everybody. Huh. You make trouble for people. It's
- 15:52no good. What are you talking about. Your neighbor's a your friend,
- 15:56Oh sure, just like you're a good friend of Ben Pringle. Yeah,
- 16:00but you're protecting somebody who's poisoning his chicken. That's that big a lie.
- 16:03Now, what's all this trouble talk? Why are you so afraid I'll bring
- 16:06the police out here? And I'm not I mean, or maybe you've done
- 16:10something you're afraid they'll tag you for. Is that it? No? I
- 16:12just want fact remains. You know something about Ben Pringle's trouble with his fly?
- 16:15Tell you what you've told me? Nothing, Okay, I'll find out
- 16:19for myself. Ah, good, that's good. Huh. You know,
- 16:25living here, you find out, that's all the right, that's the good.
- 16:27Find out what you you find out. And that's all I could get
- 16:36out of him. And on the way back to ben Pringle's farm, I
- 16:38suddenly began to wonder if I hadn't stepped into something more than just a bunch
- 16:41of sick chicks, you know something. As it turned out, I certainly
- 16:45had act free of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar In a moment, do
- 17:07you know who said absolute freedom of the press to discuss public questions is a
- 17:11foundation stone of American liberty? Those words were said by former President Herbert Hoover.
- 17:19Mister Hooper was well aware of the important role that freedom of the press
- 17:22had played in the creation and growth of the United States of America. You
- 17:27realize that without freedom of the press, no democratic form of government could exist.
- 17:33One of the first steps in the pact toward totalitarianism is the creation of
- 17:37a controlled press. A free press hampers the work of a potential dictator.
- 17:44When the press is free, the people of a country are free. When
- 17:48the press is not free, the people of a country are in danger of
- 17:52slavery. Remember the words of Herbert Hoover. They are part of your American
- 17:59heritage. Freedom of the press. He's a foundation stone of American liberty,
- 18:06and no Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and the Sick Chick
- 18:10matter. By the time I got back to Ben Pringle's place, he had
- 18:21spread something that passed for supper on the kitchen. Say who, I just
- 18:26helped yourself here, Johnny. There's plenty more in stone. If I don't
- 18:29look the best Candean Jewel greet, Yeah, you'd have some kitchen. Hey.
- 18:36Look, man, as I told you, I got nothing out of
- 18:37Joe and Zuli except the powerful feeling that he's protecting one of your neighbors around
- 18:41here. Well, you know how it is out in the country. This
- 18:45way, Jenny, A man who tells on his neighbors when he's he's an
- 18:48out cast. Hey, maybe that's why Ronzuli didn't mind if I could find
- 18:52out what's going on here for myself. I still think he's doing it.
- 18:56Yes, whose place is that? On the other side, I noticed a
- 19:00brand new Lincoln out frock. Oh oh, yes, well he's a nice
- 19:03young man. Oh he's real nice. Now what's his name now, John
- 19:07Culpepper. He came up here from myself, I can tell that. But
- 19:10the way he talks, what's you do? Oh? He just lives there,
- 19:14Yes, only he has some of the gayest parties young or he went
- 19:19to June. Oh no, wonder you like him if you can sprown drinks
- 19:22from him? Oh? Well, I have tried to drop it, and
- 19:25I'm nine, eh, but he's always just shoved a bottle in my hand
- 19:29and told me to come back here and enjoy it by myself. And who
- 19:33am I to refuse a nice gesture like that? Barning back of his place?
- 19:37Horses Karl Oh no, no, No animals are any kind and it's
- 19:42a funny thing. Now. Well, well, I'm a very sound sleepy
- 19:45you know, Johnny very bad, I'm sure I've heard some big trucks pulling
- 19:48in there at night, and I've often wondered about it. Well, damn,
- 19:52I just went right back to sleep. Find if you got a fly
- 19:55shot I can use. Sure, Jenny, I have, I'll get it
- 19:57for you too. Why what are you gonna do? Let's uh call it
- 20:02a little exploring. The night was warm, and some of Ben's chickens were
- 20:08still out in the yard. They were gathered by a section of the fence
- 20:12right next to the neighbor, mister Culpcover's barn. And I noticed something else,
- 20:17a well worn path from that barn to the fence. I mean,
- 20:22prievely as possible. I climbed over the fence and worked my way to the
- 20:25barn. There was a light on somewhere inside of it. And then then
- 20:30you caught it, A think piercing odor that I hadn't smelled. So help
- 20:34me, since I'd worked on a case down on the hillbilly country of Kentucky,
- 20:37I sneaked over to a crack at one of the barn doors. Inside
- 20:41I could see cases and cases of bottles and the outline of a huge copper
- 20:47still moonshot hands. Helm Huh, don't I'll blow your head off revenue.
- 20:56I've seen you poking around Renzulus and Springles today and I figured you might be
- 20:59dropping. No, keep your hands up on it. Look, cal Pepper,
- 21:02Oh you look. If you'll reach inside the pocket of my jacket,
- 21:04you'll find a card case that will show you a whole and what I am?
- 21:07You know I might just do that. Now, don't you try anything
- 21:11funny. You can right up over your head if you like this flash,
- 21:15don't move. There's enough light coming through the crack in this floor. Now
- 21:19you stand still about Johnny Dollar Insurance investigated? That's right? And what are
- 21:29you doing here? Col Pepper? The only interest I have in your still
- 21:32is what it's doing to Ben Pringle's chicken? What's that? And then getting
- 21:37this gun away? You know how you look, and we could deal with
- 21:42you seeing a couple of thousand dollars to keep your mouth shut about my still.
- 21:47I told you I don't care about your still, and I don't get
- 21:49it. That's out of my bailey. Wake all I care about it?
- 21:53Wait a minute, you make whisky? Got a mash? Have you've been
- 22:00dumping sommer mash over Pringles fence? Sure to destroy the animal holy smooth.
- 22:07Then all that's wrong with Ben's chickens is that they're drunk boiled to the guild.
- 22:12You need to say that, old youth today, I mean to say,
- 22:17Now, come on, I think you and Ben had better have a
- 22:18little talk. So they talked, Ben and Culpepper. In exchange for not
- 22:27being reported, Culpepper agreed to pay my expense account, Ben's vedinary bills and
- 22:32a move out of the county. Oh. I suppose I should have known
- 22:34to buy the local authorities of what was going on. But isn't that really
- 22:37a job for the company after all? Like I said, it is out
- 22:41of my Bailey way. And you know something, the stuff Culpepper was turning
- 22:45out that ol'brian wasn't half bad. Expense acount total to the company. Nothing
- 22:51yours to lead, Johnny Dollar, yours truly. Johnny Dollar is starring Bob

- 25:42the insurance company will be with that settlement. What kind of awkward when it
- 25:48comes for if an auditor comes in, Well, why didn't Dollar turn in
- 25:55an expense account on this case requests months? Oh, that's okay. His
- 26:00expense account was paid by a bootlegger. It's blackmail money, so it's all
- 26:04good for auditing purposes. I did search for the man who called Johnny.
- 26:11I was searching all over to find out what episode he was in before,
- 26:15but he didn't actually appear to be in any specific episode, just one of
- 26:22those friends of Johnny they right in every now and again. Also city of
- 26:29Vineland very interesting because I don't generally associate New Jersey with ruralness and agriculture.
- 26:38So I looked up on this and it turns out that Vineland, New Jersey,
- 26:44used to be a big center for egg production. However, with new
- 26:49technology basically ended up driving down the cost of eggs and really took a bite
- 26:59out of the poultry industry there, so it's no longer that dominant force that
- 27:04it once was. Also, we had another episode with that couple that's always
- 27:12concerned about car accidents definite Lady, I do a good job of raising some
- 27:18concerns and even making some of the statistics seem interesting. I found myself curious
- 27:25what Idaho statistics were back in nineteen probably sometime in the sixties, since they
- 27:30referenced Alaska as being a state. Though in real life a couple that talks
- 27:36this much about auto accidents that might be a little bit much. But at
- 27:41any rate, we do turn to some listener comments and feedback, and we
- 27:47do have this one regarding episode fifteen sixty seven, the eleven o'clock matter,
- 27:53Sean says, love Johnny Dollar. Is it just me or does the ending
- 27:59seem rather abrupt? Well, I'll listen to it again. The ending didn't
- 28:03seem especially abrupt. But there is a sense when we're going to these sort
- 28:11of full length mysteries told in twenty minutes or twenty two minutes whatever, that
- 28:18people do ten to rush, so you do get some rushed innings, but
- 28:25this one didn't seem especially so anymore. Than most other of these shorter links
- 28:30stories. All right, well, that will do it for today. We
- 28:34will be back tomorrow with Dragnette. Next Friday another episode of Yours Truly Johnny
- 28:41Dollar, and coming next Tuesday, it's the Adventures of Ellery Queen. In
- 28:45the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net.
