- Lucas: Hey there, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready to learn some more Malay? Lucas: So we've been buying a lot of different things at the market — chili, garlic, coconut, chicken, fish, even durian. Luna: That durian was intense. I'm still smelling it. Lucas: Tonight, something simpler and sweeter. We're buying bananas. Luna: Bananas! I love bananas. How do I say 'I want bananas'? Lucas: Saya mahu pisang. Let's break it down. Saya mahu — you already know that's 'I want'. And pisang is banana. Luna: Saya mahu pisang. Saya mahu pisang. Lucas: Exactly. Now at the market, bananas are often sold in bunches. The word for a bunch is sikat. Luna: Sikat like a comb? Because bananas hang together? Lucas: Yeah, same word! So if you want to ask 'how much for a bunch?', you say Berapa harga sesikat? Luna: Berapa harga sesikat? So se- is 'one'. Lucas: Right. Berapa harga sesikat? Try it. Luna: Berapa harga sesikat? Berapa harga sesikat? Lucas: Perfect. Now if you want two bunches, you say Saya mahu dua sikat. Luna: Saya mahu dua sikat. So just dua instead of se. Lucas: Yes. And you might want to ask if the bananas are sweet. Pisang ini manis? Luna: Pisang ini manis? Manis is sweet, right? Like in teh tarik manis. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you want ripe bananas — the yellow sweet ones — you say Saya mahu pisang masak. Luna: Masak means ripe? Or cooked? Lucas: Both in a way. Ripe fruit is masak. So pisang masak is ripe banana. Try it. Luna: Saya mahu pisang masak. Lucas: And you can also ask to choose your own: Boleh saya pilih? That means 'Can I choose?' Luna: Boleh saya pilih? So I can point to the ones I want. Lucas: Right. Let's do a quick scene. You're at the stall. Luna: Okay. Saya mahu pisang. Lucas: The seller says: Pisang ini sedap. Luna: Sedap means delicious. So Berapa harga sesikat? Lucas: He says: Lima ringgit sesikat. Luna: Lima ringgit? That's cheap. Saya mahu dua sikat. Lucas: And ask if they're sweet. Luna: Pisang ini manis? Lucas: He says: Manis, manis. And you say Saya mahu pisang masak. Luna: Saya mahu pisang masak. Boleh saya pilih? Lucas: He says: Boleh. You pick your bunches. You're all set. Luna: So today we have: Saya mahu pisang, Berapa harga sesikat?, Saya mahu dua sikat, Pisang ini manis?, Saya mahu pisang masak, and Boleh saya pilih? Lucas: That's six great phrases. Let's practice them all one more time. Repeat after me: Saya mahu pisang. Luna: Saya mahu pisang. Lucas: Berapa harga sesikat? Luna: Berapa harga sesikat? And speaking of sweet things — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, supporting the show with a small donation really helps keep these episodes coming. Luna: Yeah, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going. It's like buying us a coffee. Lucas: Exactly. You can do that at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. No pressure, but it makes a real difference. Luna: And now back to bananas. So if I'm at the market and I see green bananas, can I ask for them to ripen? So I'll go to the market and say Saya mahu pisang masak. Lucas: And the seller will be impressed. Alright, that's our episode for today. Practice these phrases, and we'll see you next time.
