- 0:00We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Following this show, it'll
- 0:04be Bob Joyce, Gino Orima live at Cafe Ara. I don't know what
- 0:09they order a coach on the menu there, but those guys they have a
- 0:13lot of fun at Gino's restaurant. We talked to the coach in his office.
- 0:18We don't go to restaurants, but we're going to do the best we
- 0:21can here to wrap this thing up. Okay, I'll love a trip to
- 0:25Gino's restaurant. I know, I don't know why Bob hasn't invited me.
- 0:29Waste right down the street from my house. Bob, you got to get
- 0:31me over there. Bob, let's go a lot of guys anytime. You
- 0:36know that. Come Onie, let's talk a little bit about next year.
- 0:41I know we're right in the middle of this thing and the team's number one,
- 0:44and we're talking to Dan all about it in the show. Isaiah Abraham
- 0:47six seven forward coming to Yukon, Virginia. Kid tell me about him.
- 0:52Listen, man, we're extremely excited about Isaiah and his future here. I
- 0:58mean, he's he's he's uh, he's got great size, he's got tremendous
- 1:04athleticism. You know, he's still developing as a three point shooter, but
- 1:10he attacks the rim. He's a good passer, and again, like we
- 1:14were just talking about, he has the upside to be, you know,
- 1:18a tremendous defender at our level as well. So he checks a ton of
- 1:22boxes. He comes from great you know, pedigree from Paul to six.
- 1:26He's got a bat. He comes from a basketball family, you know,
- 1:29his father being a former player Marquette and his aunt being an All American that
- 1:33played at George Washington. You know, comes from a great AAU program.
- 1:38I mean, those are guys. Those are the kind of guys that have
- 1:40come in our program and have done well since we've been here. So we're
- 1:44extremely excited about Isaiah. He fits into our culture great, just being a
- 1:49hard hat kind of you know, lunch pale, tough, hard nosed kid
- 1:53that wants to just come into work every day to get better. So super
- 1:56excited about about his future here with us. I've only seen video, I
- 2:00haven't seen him in person. Obviously, you've seen him in person. Six
- 2:04seven. That's a great size for a forward, isn't it. Yeah,
- 2:07absolutely, and can play multiple positions. I mean, he could play anywhere
- 2:10from the two to the four for US with that kind of size. So
- 2:15just give you so much versatility defensively. You know, he's got the ability
- 2:20to get out and transition and make plays. You know, he's a highlight
- 2:23finisher at the rim, which you've seen on video. And he's played in
- 2:28big time games in big time environments. From the success that he had you
- 2:31know, on the AAU circuit with Team Takeover winning a peach Caam championship.
- 2:37He's on one of the you know, best high school teams in the country
- 2:38at paul of six, playing in a great league in a you know,
- 2:43Catholic league down in DC. So he's gonna come into this program with tremendous
- 2:47experience, and you know, we're excited about that U six to one guard
- 2:53a Maude Noel Philadelphia guy. Top forty first of all, you know,
- 2:59coach those rankings where people go he's a top forty, top twenty, top
- 3:02fifty, whatever. How much do you make of that or how much do
- 3:06you just trust your own eyes? Yeah, not much, to be honest
- 3:08with you, that much. I mean, you know that's great for our
- 3:10fan base, and you know it's It's great for the kids and their families
- 3:15to be recognized that way. But for us, you know, the way
- 3:21we you know, go about recruiting is we just got to find the right
- 3:24fit for us. You know what the talent looks like, you know what
- 3:30the makeup looks like. We want to recruit guys that have committed the winning,
- 3:35that come from blue collar backgrounds, and those are the guys that we've
- 3:38had the most success with. So you know, when you look at Isaiah
- 3:42Abraham and you look at Aman Noel, those guys fit what we do.
- 3:46Those guys, you know, in this office, we have the term they
- 3:49look like huskies, yeah, you know, and a Mon Noel fits right
- 3:53in that mode for us. I've seen a lot of video of him.
- 3:57Man, He's impressive. I mean, he's tough as nails. He just
- 4:00looks like he ain't backing down anywhere any place anyhow. Yeah, absolutely,
- 4:05man, I mean I feel sorry for the kids sometime with his high school
- 4:09coach and with his you know, with his mentor and the work that he
- 4:14puts in with those guys. I mean I've seen some stuff that you know,
- 4:16have made me cringe, you know, but it's all for his development.
- 4:21I mean that dude is gonna walk in here from day one ready to
- 4:24compete. And finally, when you say fit, what exactly are you saying
- 4:30about getting a guy that fits with what we do? Yeah, I mean
- 4:33we do it a little differently, man, than a lot of places.
- 4:36I mean, you know, we get in here in June and we get
- 4:39right to work. These aren't like you know, summer workouts where guys are
- 4:43just getting some shots up and it's kind of like a country club thing in
- 4:46the summer, and we wait for September to ramp it up. Like no,
- 4:49once those guys hit campus, we're getting after it. You know,
- 4:53we compete at a high level every day. We push those guys out of
- 4:57their comfort zone. And that's not for everybody, you know, it's not
- 5:00for everybody. We're we're extremely honest, you know with our players, and
- 5:05you know, we hold them accountable. And you got to recruit kids and
- 5:11families that understand that and want that because that's not that's not you know,
- 5:17that's not the norm in this era, in this generation. So you know,
- 5:23those two guys, obviously, you know, we wouldn't have went all
- 5:26in on them if we didn't feel like they fit that way. Yeah,
- 5:29that's important, no question about you. Guys are doing a heck of a
- 5:31job. We appreciate you, and uh, someday, I hope you will
- 5:35teach me to shoot the jump shot that you can shoot. I cannot do
- 5:39it, and I think if you gave me a little extra time perhaps I
- 5:42can improve. Well, I'll tell you this. You got four things,
- 5:45and if you've been around the game, you probably heard them before. But
- 5:48it starts with your balance, your eyes, your elbow, and then you
- 5:51gotta hold that follow through, right, got you gotta that follow through is
- 5:56non negotiable. Okay, all right, well that's good. I'm gonna I
- 5:59made a note of that. I'm going to go back out in the driveway
- 6:01and work on some of that stuff. You go, shovel the snow first,
- 6:03man, Yeah, get my shovel first. Hold on. All right,
- 6:08coach, we appreciate you. Kamata Young all right, thanks to Dan
- 6:11Hurley, of course, the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. It's Xavier on
- 6:15Sunday twelve noon. Tip. We hope you're listening to us Onlearfield
