- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, something, get the theme music gone? Here?
- 0:03Speaker 2: Why it's Elena Wood from Nightingale College. Hello, Hello Elena.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It looks like from the notes I have here, we're
- 0:14Speaker 2: going to be talking about boredom and why it's why
- 0:19Speaker 2: it's maybe not a bad thing. But my mother always
- 0:22Speaker 2: would say, you know, I'd say I'm bored, and she said,
- 0:25Speaker 2: if you say that again, I'll give you something to
- 0:27Speaker 2: be bored about for more chores.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Right, I'll give you.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'll give you something you're that'll fix you. But that's
- 0:41Speaker 2: that's not quite what we're talking about here, is no, you're.
- 0:45Speaker 3: We're talking about the benefits of being bored. And with
- 0:49Speaker 3: technology advancing the way that it has, we have as
- 0:53Speaker 3: human beings it's.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Become over stimulated being bored.
- 1:02Speaker 3: We're not as good at being bored as we once were,
- 1:06Speaker 3: and so I want to share some health benefits.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I mean, I don't really think that I've ever had
- 1:13Speaker 2: the feeling that I was bored. I don't you know, there,
- 1:18Speaker 2: because there's always something you can do. Lucky you, Yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I pick up a book.
- 1:28Speaker 3: No, exactly, there is always something.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Let's go to your your talking points here, So what
- 1:35Speaker 2: what good is boredom?
- 1:38Speaker 3: One of the many benefits is that it helps us
- 1:40Speaker 3: to increase our problem solving skills when we are bored,
- 1:45Speaker 3: when we are not overly stimulated, it gives space for
- 1:48Speaker 3: our brain to think and generate new ideas, explore possibilities,
- 1:54Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I never do that because I'm never bored.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Next one?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Okay, what's the next one?
- 2:06Speaker 3: The next one is Boredom helps us to increase our
- 2:09Speaker 3: conversational skills, and once again, it just frees up our
- 2:13Speaker 3: brain to be able to generate novel ideas as well
- 2:19Speaker 3: as when we put down our electronics or books, whatever
- 2:22Speaker 3: it might be, we're much better at actually engaging with
- 2:25Speaker 3: the people around us.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Now, I don't want I'm gonna. I don't want to
- 2:29Speaker 2: seem like I'm being contrary on every one of these.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But but but when you say so so, it increases
- 2:36Speaker 2: your conversation skills. What you're doing, what you're saying here
- 2:40Speaker 2: is you're gonna you know, you have to make small talk,
- 2:43Speaker 2: which I find extremely distasteful.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Well, you don't have to start off at how is
- 2:49Speaker 3: your day? You can go straight to tell me the
- 2:52Speaker 3: thing that makes you the most happy in the entire world,
- 2:54Speaker 3: you know, all right.
- 2:56Speaker 2: All right, okay, okay, next one.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Next one is boredom helps us to become more present.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Being present, just you're here, just me's being engaged in
- 3:09Speaker 3: what is going on right this moment.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I just that made me think of being in class
- 3:15Speaker 2: when they would call roll and you'd have to raise
- 3:17Speaker 2: your hand and save here, and I kind of miss that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Let's let's should we should call the show.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Each morning with that? Absolutely?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, what else have we got?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Next? Is it helps with stress reduction. Once again, that
- 3:34Speaker 3: discomfort of just sitting with our own mind. It actually
- 3:38Speaker 3: helps us to lower our stress because we are decreasing
- 3:42Speaker 3: that constant stimuli that we usually have in our lives.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Okay, again, I hate to say it, but I when
- 3:51Speaker 2: I sit night and then I'll start thinking about all
- 3:54Speaker 2: of the stuff that I have to do, and that
- 3:57Speaker 2: you know, i'd rather just not.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think that she's saying, don't think about the stuff
- 4:03Speaker 1: you got to do. Just stare out the window. Isn't
- 4:06Speaker 1: that what you're saying?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Look at the trees, listen to the birds.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Meditation and yeah, okay.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Next is that it helps us to go a little
- 4:19Speaker 3: bit deeper into self discovery. We learn more about ourselves
- 4:24Speaker 3: and who we are when we're able to just sit
- 4:28Speaker 3: there without our phones, without the TV, whatever it might be,
- 4:31Speaker 3: and just be with our minds.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Okay, if you ever know somebody who's you can, just
- 4:38Speaker 2: somebody that you're close to, and you just know that
- 4:40Speaker 2: they're a complete mystery to themselves, they understand, they understand.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I mean, I have somebody in my family like that, just.
- 4:50Speaker 3: They have no just no self awareness and have.
- 4:53Speaker 2: No self awareness at all. Yeah, it's kind of sad.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I think we all have a few of those in
- 4:59Speaker 3: our lives.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You divorce them sometimes, Yeah, Okay, what's the next one?
- 5:10Speaker 3: The next and last is that boredom leads to better
- 5:13Speaker 3: overall health through stress reduction, mindfulness, self discovery, et cetera.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Boredom can actually help us to improve our mental, emotional,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and physical well being.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Okay, So I guess it's just that connotation that you
- 5:29Speaker 2: were talking about at the beginning of the connotation we
- 5:33Speaker 2: have for the word boredom. But what you're really yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you're really talking about what Carrie was saying. It's it's
- 5:39Speaker 2: it's meditation.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's I mean kids, Yeah, you kids don't just stare
- 5:43Speaker 1: out the window anymore. You know, they they've got their
- 5:46Speaker 1: windows that they stare out of.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly, just using a little bit of
- 5:52Speaker 3: your imagination, letting letting your mind lead the way. I guess.
- 5:57Speaker 2: All right, that makes sense, That makes absolute. Uh so
- 6:01Speaker 2: it may, it says here it may not be fun
- 6:03Speaker 2: to be bored, but it can be beneficial and increase creativity.
- 6:09Speaker 2: All right, all right, I think, Elena, that sounds good.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'll give it some more thought. I'm bored everyone, congratulations.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So it's it's a it's a lovely thing to do,
- 6:22Speaker 2: Elena would where can people find out more?
