- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from news talkst be follow
- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio Now.
- 0:17Speaker 2: If you haven't watched the video yet, this is the
- 0:19Speaker 2: video of Bunnings that Bunnings is released of its staff
- 0:21Speaker 2: being attacked in store. Can I recommend you go and
- 0:23Speaker 2: watch it, especially if you feel weird about Bunnings using
- 0:27Speaker 2: the CCTV for facial recognition. It's a compilation of what's
- 0:30Speaker 2: happened in their stores, just a few incidents that have
- 0:32Speaker 2: happened in their stores. The first incident in the video
- 0:35Speaker 2: is guy pulling a knife on a staff member and
- 0:38Speaker 2: threatening that staff member just so that he can walk
- 0:40Speaker 2: out the door with two trolleys worth of stolen stuff.
- 0:43Speaker 2: This happened in the Portado A store. The next incident
- 0:46Speaker 2: is a guy with a box in his arms running
- 0:48Speaker 2: at and knocking over a staff member while another guy
- 0:50Speaker 2: behind him tries to steal a second box. That happened
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the Tuckaninny store. The incident I reckon that I
- 0:55Speaker 2: hated watching the most was a man wandering up to
- 0:57Speaker 2: a staff member at their car in a mostly empty
- 1:01Speaker 2: car park, sidling up to the staff member, then smacking
- 1:04Speaker 2: them in the head when they weren't expecting it, and
- 1:06Speaker 2: then chasing them while they ran away and tripped over
- 1:09Speaker 2: because they were so frightened of what was happening to them. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 2: let's be clear about what's going on here. Bunnings is
- 1:15Speaker 2: releasing this video as part of a pr campaign. It's
- 1:17Speaker 2: trying to convince us that they need to be able
- 1:19Speaker 2: to use facial facial technology in two of their Hamilton stores.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But it blows my mind that they have to go
- 1:25Speaker 2: to these lengths. They've been trialing the facial recognition since
- 1:28Speaker 2: twenty eighteen. They've had to fight through a tribunal process
- 1:31Speaker 2: in Australia that had the Privacy Commissioner here and the
- 1:34Speaker 2: equivalent over the ditch watching them. They've engaged a Mildi
- 1:37Speaker 2: digital sovereignty expert. They've released at least two of these
- 1:41Speaker 2: video compilations and all this is four so far in
- 1:44Speaker 2: New Zealand. Is just permission in two stores, not all
- 1:46Speaker 2: the stores, just two stores, two Hamilton stores, because apparently
- 1:50Speaker 2: there are enough of us who are worried that Bunnings
- 1:52Speaker 2: will take our biometric data and sell it or lose it,
- 1:55Speaker 2: or maybe wrongly deny entry to some innocent person. This
- 1:59Speaker 2: should I would have thought been a slam dunk. Yes
- 2:01Speaker 2: to Bunnings, I would have thought absolutely, go ahead and
- 2:05Speaker 2: use the facial technician facial recognition technology if you need
- 2:08Speaker 2: to keep your staff safe, because yeah, something may go
- 2:11Speaker 2: wrong one day with the CCTV, but go and have
- 2:14Speaker 2: a look at those videos. Things are going wrong right now.
