- 0:02Speaker 1: College football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And, of course, everyone knows the exact right time to
- 0:08Speaker 2: start a college football show is week four of the
- 0:11Speaker 2: college football season.
- 0:12Speaker 3: There's T-Bob again.
- 0:13Speaker 4: That's right. Special guest. Glad to be back, guys. Love
- 0:17Speaker 4: coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:19Speaker 4: College football.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Mario Cristobal, head coach at the University of Miami. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 3: you for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I just don't find any value in it. Humans, like,
- 0:27Speaker 4: just spewing diarrhea out of their mouth.
- 0:30Speaker 1: With Stu Gatz.
- 0:31Speaker 4: I can give a rat's fat ass about what he
- 0:33Speaker 4: says or does.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And the Bear.
- 0:35Speaker 4: The f * * * ing Bear is awesome. You're
- 0:37Speaker 4: listening to College Football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It is College Football with Stu Gatz and Bear, and
- 0:44Speaker 2: look who is here.
- 0:45Speaker 3: He is the host of Wake Up Barstool, 8 to
- 0:48Speaker 3: 10 a.m.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Eastern, every single day on FS1 and wherever you get
- 0:52Speaker 2: your podcasts.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It is T-Bob.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Kirk Herbstreit going to join us in about 15 minutes.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Very much looking forward to that and very much, T-Bob,
- 1:00Speaker 2: looking forward to what is another great college football weekend
- 1:04Speaker 2: coming up here.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, Stu, we are on the border of
- 1:09Speaker 4: a literal record-setting weekend. Six ranked matchups this weekend. The
- 1:15Speaker 4: record is seven.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Stu?
- 1:17Speaker 4: I know you're not a math guy.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19Speaker 4: There's two teams in each game. Six times two, 12. Yes.
- 1:22Speaker 4: 25 divided by 12. We're talking about damn near 50%
- 1:26Speaker 4: of the teams with a name, with a number next
- 1:28Speaker 4: to their name going toe to toe this weekend. And
- 1:30Speaker 4: it starts in the big 10 top five. Ohio State
- 1:35Speaker 4: heading to Bloomington, taking on Indiana, a rematch of last
- 1:39Speaker 4: year's Big Ten National Championship. Of course, Ohio State having
- 1:43Speaker 4: already fallen to Texas, but Indiana, Bear, winners of 22
- 1:46Speaker 4: in a row, and here's where we should start. Last
- 1:50Speaker 4: time we saw these two in the Big Ten Championship,
- 1:52Speaker 4: it was a defensive battle. Bear, how do you feel
- 1:55Speaker 4: these teams have changed in the interim?
- 1:58Speaker 5: I think the biggest change is Indiana's secondary team. I
- 2:03Speaker 5: don't know without D'Angelo Pons if they have a guy
- 2:06Speaker 5: back there who can just take away half the field
- 2:10Speaker 5: and possibly you're looking at Jeremiah Smith having a a
- 2:13Speaker 5: monster game, which I love Ryan day's quote the other
- 2:15Speaker 5: day about to Julian saying like, if it's single coverage,
- 2:19Speaker 5: he's definitely open, throw him the ball. If it's double coverage,
- 2:22Speaker 5: he's probably open triple coverage. Someone else is open. I
- 2:26Speaker 5: love that quote. I wonder now with daily back as
- 2:31Speaker 5: well in that Indiana, you saw Indiana's defense in the
- 2:35Speaker 5: second half last week of that game, really make some
- 2:38Speaker 5: adjustments and get to Calandria and eliminate their passing game.
- 2:42Speaker 5: Big Ten Championship game last year, they made Saiyan see ghosts.
- 2:45Speaker 5: They dominated the Ohio State offensive line. I think there
- 2:48Speaker 5: are some concerns, like bubbling, percolating maybe, under the radar
- 2:54Speaker 5: a little bit about the Ohio State offensive line. Michael
- 2:58Speaker 5: Lombardi is someone who always used to say bad offensive
- 3:00Speaker 5: lines travel, good offensive lines. Bad offensive line on the
- 3:03Speaker 5: road here. I don't know. I think Ohio State is
- 3:08Speaker 5: the better team, but I just think every, like, tangential, emotional,
- 3:14Speaker 5: off-the-field deal, like Indiana in the longest winning streak, longest
- 3:18Speaker 5: home winning streak, Big Ten winning streak, beat them in
- 3:20Speaker 5: the Big Ten championship game. Now you're a home dog.
- 3:23Speaker 5: If I'm Kurt Cignetti, I love all of those other
- 3:27Speaker 5: things coming into the game.
- 3:29Speaker 2: So, Bear, I think one of the interesting things with
- 3:31Speaker 2: this game and with college football in general, and I'm
- 3:33Speaker 2: wondering if you agree, I think Ohio State has the
- 3:36Speaker 2: advantage because they have the loss. And Indiana has not
- 3:40Speaker 2: lost yet. I think you have to factor. Well, yes,
- 3:42Speaker 2: because you don't want to lose two. You certainly don't
- 3:44Speaker 2: want to lose three. And Indiana is undefeated. And so
- 3:47Speaker 2: I just kind of like the edge there for Ohio State. Plus,
- 3:50Speaker 2: it's Indiana. Indiana is no longer a joke, as we know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: that they're defending national champions. But I just like when
- 3:56Speaker 2: the matchup is equal or close to equal, the team
- 3:59Speaker 2: that has one loss, to me, has an advantage over
- 4:02Speaker 2: the team that is undefeated.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll deflect to T-Bob here, and I want to
- 4:07Speaker 5: ask him as a player because I think there's a
- 4:09Speaker 5: lot more pressure on Ohio State in this game because
- 4:13Speaker 5: they have the loss. If they lose, you have a
- 4:16Speaker 5: loss to Texas, you've got a loss to Indy. Yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 5: two top 10 teams for sure, but now your wiggle
- 4:21Speaker 5: room for the remainder of the year is completely gone.
- 4:25Speaker 5: To me, that's a lot of pressure, I think, for
- 4:28Speaker 5: Ohio State going into this game, kind of knowing if
- 4:30Speaker 5: we don't win here, we really put ourselves in a corner.
- 4:34Speaker 4: So, I mean, I think in this kind of conversation,
- 4:39Speaker 4: I think I fall more on the side of what
- 4:43Speaker 4: Stu is saying.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:45Speaker 4: If we're talking about... But you are right, Bear. You
- 4:48Speaker 4: are right. There is no margin of error. But what
- 4:51Speaker 4: does that do? That fights against any complacency. It fights
- 4:55Speaker 4: like Ohio State. I think this Ohio State team is
- 4:59Speaker 4: better this year for having that Texas loss than last year's.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Last year, I was talking constantly about the Buckeyes. Look,
- 5:05Speaker 4: they haven't been bloodied up. They don't know what it's
- 5:07Speaker 4: like when they're in a fistfight. They don't know how
- 5:09Speaker 4: they're going to respond. They've taken one on the chin.
- 5:12Speaker 4: And more importantly, they learned a lesson. incredibly harsh lesson
- 5:18Speaker 4: about how even a moment of complacency can make you pay.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I mean, they were dominating Texas. They fell asleep for
- 5:25Speaker 4: 10 minutes, and somehow they end up losing to a
- 5:28Speaker 4: Texas team that they're probably objectively better than. So I
- 5:31Speaker 4: like more battle-tested Ohio State coming in here. Now, that said, Indiana,
- 5:37Speaker 4: a couple of tough scraps, whether it's Northwestern, obviously last
- 5:40Speaker 4: week Nebraska. So they've been in a couple dogfights. I just...
- 5:44Speaker 4: it's a weird thing. I don't think this year's Indiana
- 5:46Speaker 4: team is, I don't think there's good, which is, which
- 5:50Speaker 4: is fine. And it's not even a knock on them.
- 5:51Speaker 4: It's actually a huge testament to them that we're in
- 5:54Speaker 4: year three of Cignetti. They're still winning and they look
- 5:57Speaker 4: more flawed than they had before.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I don't, I don't, I don't like you mentioned the
- 6:01Speaker 4: secondary bear. I completely agree. The running game, which was
- 6:04Speaker 4: dominant last year, for whatever reason, offensive line, if I
- 6:06Speaker 4: expect them to be a bit better up to this point,
- 6:08Speaker 4: they haven't been. I think I kind of like, Ohio
- 6:13Speaker 4: State to go in and get this done. Stu, I've
- 6:15Speaker 4: been wanting to ask you about Kurt Cignetti because you
- 6:18Speaker 4: are the master at moving the goalposts, right?
- 6:23Speaker 1: Do it again.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Do this.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Do that. I'm not impressed. Do more. Do better. I mean,
- 6:28Speaker 4: is Cignetti the anti-Stugatz? Like, what could you possibly say
- 6:32Speaker 4: to him?
- 6:33Speaker 2: You can't really say anything for the remainder of time
- 6:35Speaker 2: because when you do it at Indiana, you don't have
- 6:37Speaker 2: to do it again.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He already did it. He did it once.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Wait, wait, wait, wait. That's big news. In the Stugatz school,
- 6:45Speaker 4: Kurt Cignetti never has to do it again.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:47Speaker 2: He didn't do it at Alabama. He did it at
- 6:49Speaker 2: the worst college football program in the history of the sport,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and he won them a national championship. He is good
- 6:57Speaker 2: for the remainder of time. He doesn't have to do
- 6:59Speaker 2: it against Ohio State. He doesn't have to do it
- 7:01Speaker 2: again this year. He did it once at Indiana, and
- 7:04Speaker 2: that's enough. I mean, seriously, he's on my Mount Rushmore
- 7:07Speaker 2: of college coaches. If he never wins another game, Cignetti
- 7:10Speaker 2: is on my Mount Rushmore. of college coaches, because bear,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you never thought in our lifetime, we would see Indiana
- 7:16Speaker 2: be this relevant.
- 7:17Speaker 5: No, no, it is a, we're all laughing. I, I
- 7:20Speaker 5: remember back in the days when Stanford, Steve and I
- 7:22Speaker 5: did our pod. We always used to like joke about it.
- 7:24Speaker 5: This is going to be like Indiana's week to, to wait.
- 7:27Speaker 5: We loved Indiana as an underdog.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And then.
- 7:29Speaker 5: We bet on them so many times and they would
- 7:30Speaker 5: have a big lead and they'd lose. And we would
- 7:33Speaker 5: like joke around, like lose it. If Indiana was a girl,
- 7:35Speaker 5: he would like lose their number. And we'd, we'd never
- 7:37Speaker 5: answer the call again. If they called for the late night,
- 7:39Speaker 5: the late night booty call, but you look at what
- 7:42Speaker 5: they've done now. I, how, how can, I can't believe
- 7:46Speaker 5: I'm saying this, but, Like, how can I not agree
- 7:49Speaker 5: with Stugatz?
- 7:51Speaker 3: I can't believe what I just said.
- 7:52Speaker 5: They beat Ohio State. They've won the Big Ten. They've
- 7:55Speaker 5: won the National. Everything that you possibly could do, he's done.
- 8:00Speaker 5: And I think the Indiana fans are, like, whatever happens
- 8:03Speaker 5: from here, we're good. I think they're probably more concerned
- 8:06Speaker 5: about getting their hoops team back on track right now.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Bear, I do wonder if there's Cignetti fatigue, meaning are
- 8:11Speaker 2: people starting to get tired of this? It was a
- 8:13Speaker 2: cute little story, and now they're starting to get tired
- 8:15Speaker 2: of Cignetti and his program.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I know for a fact that there– maybe not Cignetti fatigue,
- 8:23Speaker 5: but I think there is some Indiana fatigue.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Because it was this cute story, and now it's like–
- 8:32Speaker 5: I know for a fact there are people out there,
- 8:34Speaker 5: and I am friends with some of them, who hate-watched
- 8:37Speaker 5: Indiana and Nebraska last week in.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Hopes that Nebraska would win. I mean, look, they say
- 8:43Speaker 4: it in the Dark Knight, the old Batman, right? I mean,
- 8:45Speaker 4: you either die a hero or you live long enough
- 8:48Speaker 4: to become the villain. They're on a 22-game win streak.
- 8:50Speaker 4: They're the villain. Like, they are the big bad now.
- 8:55Speaker 4: They're no longer cute. They're kind of obnoxious, if we're
- 8:57Speaker 4: completely honest. I mean, Cignetti's out here talking all this
- 9:00Speaker 4: trash about how we do hard things, scheduling, and he
- 9:02Speaker 4: set the precedent for making your schedule as easy as possible.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Indiana fans are just walking around, throwing their weight around,
- 9:10Speaker 4: thinking their shit don't stink anymore. Which, in a way, again,
- 9:13Speaker 4: is kind of fun to watch. Now, I asked you
- 9:15Speaker 4: about Cignetti.
- 9:16Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Same number of national championships, Ryan Day.
- 9:20Speaker 3: What about Ryan Day, Stu? Different school. Do it against
- 9:23Speaker 3: Indiana on the road. Do it again.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And then do it again.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I mean, to be honest, like, he is Ryan Day
- 9:33Speaker 4: to me because I'm someone who's actually, I've always championed
- 9:36Speaker 4: against your school of thought, Stu. I've always thought that, like, we,
- 9:40Speaker 4: in American sports culture, we make championships as end-all, be-all,
- 9:43Speaker 4: and we don't engage with, like, nuance and context and
- 9:46Speaker 4: you can be great and not win championships and this
- 9:48Speaker 4: or that. Ryan Day, though, is the ultimate kind of
- 9:51Speaker 4: put that to the test coach, right? Like like he's
- 9:54Speaker 4: never had that perfect moment. Even, even, even the year
- 9:58Speaker 4: in which he wins the national championship, they lose to Michigan.
- 10:01Speaker 4: They don't win the big 10, right? Like, like he's
- 10:03Speaker 4: been so close. He was born into this great situation.
- 10:06Speaker 4: That's why they call him third base. So, so I agree.
- 10:10Speaker 4: He's got an S championship. He's got big 10 championships.
- 10:13Speaker 4: He's got high, but I still feel like Ryan day
- 10:16Speaker 4: should be having more success at Ohio state.
- 10:20Speaker 5: I think that comes with just the, the, the pressure
- 10:25Speaker 5: of that job. I say pressure and I don't want
- 10:27Speaker 5: to discount like the job, but it's almost, this is
- 10:34Speaker 5: going to come across the wrong way. And I'm going
- 10:36Speaker 5: to say it anyway. It's almost like the easiest job
- 10:40Speaker 5: in college football is, You've got an unbelievable fan base
- 10:43Speaker 5: who can be a thorn in your side. You've got
- 10:46Speaker 5: unlimited resources. You've got unbelievable talent. You've got history, tradition,
- 10:52Speaker 5: everything going for you. It's like a program that really
- 10:55Speaker 5: is on autopilot. But at the same time, it's a
- 10:58Speaker 5: difficult job because you're expected to beat Michigan every year.
- 11:02Speaker 5: You're expected to win the big 10 every year. You're
- 11:04Speaker 5: expected to win or play for the national title or
- 11:07Speaker 5: go to the Rose bowl every year. So like, it's
- 11:09Speaker 5: like damned. If you do damned, if you don't both
- 11:11Speaker 5: sides of the sword and, there are 138, I think,
- 11:17Speaker 5: FBS teams now out there. There are probably 130 college
- 11:22Speaker 5: football programs out there that would kill to have Ryan
- 11:25Speaker 5: Day as their head coach.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Yeah, that's completely fair. You also got the flagship thing, right?
- 11:30Speaker 4: You have a massive state with a ton of talent,
- 11:32Speaker 4: and you're the main draw. Everybody's obsessed. Everything funnels to you.
- 11:36Speaker 4: All right, let's get into some picks then here before
- 11:38Speaker 4: we talk BYU-Notre Dame, guys. I think Ohio State wins. Again,
- 11:42Speaker 4: I think a key in their Texas failure where they
- 11:45Speaker 4: were exhausted by that fourth quarter, even though it was
- 11:47Speaker 4: at night, I think the weather kind of got to them.
- 11:49Speaker 4: It's going to be a much more friendly environment in
- 11:51Speaker 4: that regard. It's going to be at noon, a time
- 11:53Speaker 4: slot they're used to. And I can't get past Jeremiah Smith.
- 11:59Speaker 4: I think Jeremiah Smith takes over this game. I think
- 12:01Speaker 4: Ohio State wins. I am going to take the three
- 12:05Speaker 4: and a half with Indiana.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Wow.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I think it's a close game. I worry about Ohio
- 12:11Speaker 5: State's offensive line. They did basically pass the test in
- 12:15Speaker 5: Texas for 50 minutes of the game. So they do
- 12:20Speaker 5: have that obviously positive experience going for them. You've got
- 12:24Speaker 5: an experienced quarterback. I want to know if they can
- 12:27Speaker 5: make the big play. when it matters on there, they
- 12:31Speaker 5: can kind of shake the, cause that's, that narrative's out
- 12:33Speaker 5: there as well. Like Julian is saying in big games, uh,
- 12:37Speaker 5: he hasn't necessarily been great. I think the confidence of
- 12:40Speaker 5: Indiana right now is sky high. I think this team
- 12:44Speaker 5: believe truly believes I'm sure it's because of Kurt Cignetti.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Every time they set foot on the field, they're going
- 12:50Speaker 5: to win and they believe they're going to find a
- 12:52Speaker 5: way to win. Last week's game was basically Iowa Penn
- 12:55Speaker 5: state from last year, all over again. Uh, These biggest
- 13:00Speaker 5: games in school history at home always have a way
- 13:03Speaker 5: of maybe being a negative, but I think IU, north
- 13:06Speaker 5: of a field goal here, I'd be taking the Hoosiers
- 13:08Speaker 5: plus the points. It would not shock me if they
- 13:11Speaker 5: did extend all those winning streaks that they got going on.
- 13:14Speaker 3: T-Bob, I hate going against Bear here, but I love
- 13:16Speaker 3: Ohio State.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I love the urgency that Ohio State has to play
- 13:18Speaker 2: with because they have that loss.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Indiana doesn't have one.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I understand what Bear is saying about feeling disrespected and
- 13:24Speaker 2: using that as a chip because you're the defending national champs,
- 13:28Speaker 2: you're undefeated, and you're still plus 3.5. But Indiana's come
- 13:31Speaker 2: a long way. They shouldn't feel that disrespected. Normally this
- 13:34Speaker 2: game would be plus 33.5, and it's not. So they've
- 13:38Speaker 2: got it down to plus 3.5.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I just think Ohio State needs the game more.
- 13:42Speaker 2: They're a more talented football team top to bottom, and
- 13:45Speaker 2: I think Ohio State's going to blow them out.
- 13:47Speaker 3: I really do.
- 13:48Speaker 5: What's going to be wild is I can remember, and Kirk,
- 13:52Speaker 5: when he comes on, probably we can bring it up
- 13:54Speaker 5: with him. I remember when Ohio State would play Indiana,
- 13:58Speaker 5: the stadium would be like 60% Ohio State fans. I
- 14:02Speaker 5: can promise you that you probably, in order to get
- 14:06Speaker 5: tickets for this game, had to purchase Indiana season tickets
- 14:09Speaker 5: to keep Ohio State fans from coming in and buying tickets.
- 14:12Speaker 5: So it's going to feel really weird to see Ohio
- 14:15Speaker 5: State-Indiana on this field and actually legit be an Indiana
- 14:19Speaker 5: home field advantage.
- 14:21Speaker 4: And lest you think that I just choose Ohio State blindly,
- 14:25Speaker 4: I chose Indiana to beat them in the Big Ten.
- 14:27Speaker 4: I was adamant it was going to happen. So it's
- 14:29Speaker 4: not a blind choice. I just like the Buckeyes a
- 14:30Speaker 4: bit better here. All right. Right now, let's talk to
- 14:34Speaker 4: an Ohio State man. Let's talk to the legend, Kirk Herbstreit.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Next, here on College Football with Stu Gatz and the Bear. Hey,
- 15:04Speaker 4: what's up, y'all? Welcome back to the College Football Show
- 15:06Speaker 4: with Stugatz and the Bear. We talked made man earlier.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Kurt Cignetti, the only made man in Stugatz's history, except
- 15:14Speaker 4: for maybe this next man right here. And that's Kirk Herbstreit, man.
- 15:17Speaker 4: He's all over your television all the time, catching on
- 15:20Speaker 4: game days. He'll be called the Broncos game Thursday. He'll
- 15:23Speaker 4: be in Provo Saturday. Kirk, what's up, man? Thank you
- 15:26Speaker 4: so much for joining us today.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Good to be with you.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Okay, so let's start in Provo, because I got to
- 15:34Speaker 4: talk to Kalani Satake today, and I love that man. Serious, disciplined,
- 15:41Speaker 4: a program that kind of represents the coach. Just tough, fundamental,
- 15:45Speaker 4: and you're going to be in a fight. How do
- 15:47Speaker 4: you feel about this Notre Dame team, which hasn't really
- 15:51Speaker 4: been tested by this quality of opponent having to go
- 15:54Speaker 4: on the road to Provo?
- 15:56Speaker 1: I think that's the question, right, T-Bob?
- 15:59Speaker 6: I think that Notre Dame's one of the few teams
- 16:01Speaker 6: left that we just haven't seen them tested, like you said.
- 16:05Speaker 6: And right now they look great. It's not their fault.
- 16:08Speaker 6: These players are playing the schedule that they have. They've
- 16:10Speaker 6: been dominant. You know, their defense up to this point
- 16:15Speaker 6: has been better. Maybe right now, again, it's only week
- 16:18Speaker 6: six or seven, wherever we are. Right now you could
- 16:22Speaker 6: make a really strong case since Marcus Freeman's been in
- 16:24Speaker 6: South Bend. This might be his best defense that he's had.
- 16:29Speaker 6: But this will be a different test.
- 16:31Speaker 1: L.J.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Martin being out is significant, especially short yardage and red zone.
- 16:37Speaker 6: But Bear Bachmeier, these last couple weeks, we know how
- 16:40Speaker 6: he's built.
- 16:40Speaker 1: He wears number 47. Dude is.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Like a running back back there, maybe a tight end
- 16:45Speaker 6: or fullback back there when he takes off.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He'll have to have a.
- 16:48Speaker 6: Big day, not only throwing it, but getting on the
- 16:51Speaker 6: edge and between the tackles and kind of picking up
- 16:55Speaker 6: for losing LJ Martin. But I'm excited to see just
- 16:59Speaker 6: where this Notre Dame team is. I don't know if
- 17:01Speaker 6: people nationally, T-Bob, you can appreciate this playing in Baton Rouge.
- 17:05Speaker 6: I don't know if people nationally can fully appreciate how
- 17:09Speaker 6: tough Provo, Utah is.
- 17:11Speaker 1: It's a very underrated, hostile environment.
- 17:15Speaker 6: So just to see CJ Carr in that environment and
- 17:18Speaker 6: see this offense and the operation of it, if nothing else,
- 17:22Speaker 6: that and a defense, by the way, BYU's not, they're
- 17:25Speaker 6: not playing bad on that side of the ball either.
- 17:26Speaker 1: They're flying around.
- 17:28Speaker 6: You know, I think they're in the top 10 right
- 17:30Speaker 6: now in scoring defense. You know, total defense, I think
- 17:34Speaker 6: they're seventh. So they've been playing well, but this will
- 17:36Speaker 6: be a much different test for them. But they are
- 17:39Speaker 6: going to attack the Notre Dame running game and try
- 17:43Speaker 6: to get CJ Carr into more obvious passing situations and
- 17:47Speaker 6: then just dial it up, try to create havoc for
- 17:50Speaker 6: him and see if they get some turnovers and get
- 17:53Speaker 6: Bachmeier the short field to work with.
- 17:56Speaker 4: You talked about that Notre Dame offense.
- 17:58Speaker 5: I think the emergence of Walton has really been what's
- 18:01Speaker 5: made this offense go. Early in the year, we were
- 18:03Speaker 5: wondering who was going to be the big play threat
- 18:07Speaker 5: on that offense. It looks like Walton's finally becoming that
- 18:10Speaker 5: guy that's going to step in and replace uh, love
- 18:13Speaker 5: and price.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Well, that that's, that's how I feel too, bear.
- 18:17Speaker 6: I mean, it, the, the nice Williams last year when
- 18:21Speaker 6: he would get in, um, he was just kind of
- 18:24Speaker 6: a compliment to what we saw with Jeremiah of engineering price.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And he showed enough flash in those situations to make
- 18:32Speaker 1: you think maybe this out and give you that, that
- 18:35Speaker 1: wow factor. And I think Walton does.
- 18:38Speaker 6: So I think Walton back there, I think gives them
- 18:41Speaker 6: a little bit more of the dimension that they were
- 18:42Speaker 6: used to. I mean, you lose two first round draft
- 18:45Speaker 6: picks in today's day and age when it comes to
- 18:47Speaker 6: running backs, not getting very early. and you lose two
- 18:50Speaker 6: off one team, it's taken a little bit of time
- 18:53Speaker 6: for them to get comfortable with who that guy can be.
- 18:56Speaker 1: And how about the true freshman?
- 18:57Speaker 6: This will be a great game, Bear, I think, for
- 18:59Speaker 6: Walton to kind of show he is that guy. They're
- 19:03Speaker 6: always going to have a big, strong offensive line. The receivers,
- 19:06Speaker 6: I feel like they've been there for 10 years. You know,
- 19:09Speaker 6: those guys have been there forever with great house and
- 19:11Speaker 6: phase on. So CJ car, greatest thing. I think he
- 19:15Speaker 6: brings his poise, seems to have all the answers. He'll
- 19:18Speaker 6: need to have all the answers. Cause like I said,
- 19:20Speaker 6: I think BYU, they're going to, they're going to create
- 19:22Speaker 6: some havoc and, and try to get the ball. Now
- 19:25Speaker 6: card and turn it over, you know, Notre Dame right now,
- 19:28Speaker 6: I think they've lost one fumble on the year.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't care who you're playing against that. That that's,
- 19:33Speaker 1: that's pretty damn impressive.
- 19:35Speaker 6: So, Can BYU create some turnovers against an offense that
- 19:39Speaker 6: up to this point has done a really good job
- 19:41Speaker 6: of just not turning it over?
- 19:43Speaker 1: I think that could be a big key in the game.
- 19:45Speaker 4: And Kirk, you study these teams and you call these
- 19:48Speaker 4: games so closely. I don't know how you have enough
- 19:50Speaker 4: hours in the day, but when you look to BYU,
- 19:53Speaker 4: you've looked at Notre Dame. How big is the talent gap?
- 19:58Speaker 4: Because at a glance to the layman, it feels very large.
- 20:03Speaker 4: How big is the gap and how does BYU, what's
- 20:06Speaker 4: the avenue to them overcoming that?
- 20:09Speaker 6: Well, I think first, I love that question because I
- 20:11Speaker 6: think when Bear was at game day, we went two
- 20:14Speaker 6: decades with preseason Notre Dame hype. And then they'd get
- 20:19Speaker 6: on the field with somebody that was like an LSU
- 20:23Speaker 6: or Ohio State or whoever.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And for about 20 years, it was.
- 20:26Speaker 6: A very, very noticeable difference between Notre Dame just not
- 20:30Speaker 6: having what they had in the 80s with Lou Holtz
- 20:34Speaker 6: in the early 90s with Lou Holtz.
- 20:36Speaker 1: When they had superior athletic ability. They had linemen.
- 20:40Speaker 6: They had tight ends. They had occasionally a linebacker. But
- 20:43Speaker 6: when it came to the skill, running backs, receivers, safeties, corners,
- 20:48Speaker 6: they were... two or three steps behind the elite programs. Well,
- 20:53Speaker 6: I really think the end of the Brian Kelly era
- 20:56Speaker 6: and now with Marcus Freeman, I remember when they went
- 20:58Speaker 6: to Athens.
- 20:59Speaker 1: About five years ago, I thought, oh, here we go again.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And I was like, shit, they are running with Georgia.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Like they look the part and that has not changed
- 21:12Speaker 6: one bit. So Marcus Freeman, to his credit, maybe the
- 21:15Speaker 6: admissions department, whatever they're doing- different these last five to
- 21:22Speaker 6: six years.
- 21:23Speaker 1: They look much more athletic.
- 21:26Speaker 6: Of course, they're going to get the quarterback and the lineman,
- 21:28Speaker 6: but they look different. Now, with that being said, it's
- 21:32Speaker 6: hard to know because when BYU, with a lot of
- 21:36Speaker 6: these similar players, got on the field against Texas Tech,
- 21:39Speaker 6: last year I called one of those games, one in Lubbock,
- 21:41Speaker 6: it was a very noticeable difference between the skill with
- 21:46Speaker 6: Texas Tech and.
- 21:47Speaker 1: BYU, and then it that way out in the Big
- 21:49Speaker 1: 12 championship. So on film right now, based on who
- 21:53Speaker 1: they played, especially on defense, I mean, 11 and 13
- 21:57Speaker 1: and four, these guys are flying and look awesome on tape.
- 22:02Speaker 6: But will they look that way against Notre Dame? I
- 22:06Speaker 6: think they will defensively. I don't know where they are
- 22:10Speaker 6: as an offense when it comes to, especially without LJ Martin,
- 22:13Speaker 6: if they can stack up.
- 22:14Speaker 1: This could be a low scoring game.
- 22:16Speaker 6: I don't know what the over under is, but this,
- 22:19Speaker 6: this kind of feels like with the home crowd and
- 22:22Speaker 6: with the way their defense is playing, I would be
- 22:25Speaker 6: surprised if it's like a, you know, Notre Dame in
- 22:28Speaker 6: the low twenties kind of game and, and BYU trying to,
- 22:32Speaker 6: you know, kind of hang in there with them.
- 22:34Speaker 1: It just feels like a more of a low scoring
- 22:36Speaker 1: kind of game.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Herbie, if I say Miami is the most talented team
- 22:40Speaker 2: in the country, how much brushback am I going to
- 22:43Speaker 2: get from you?
- 22:44Speaker 1: Well, I called them a couple weeks ago. I love Miami.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think they're better at quarterback this year.
- 22:52Speaker 6: I don't know if they have the depth at receiver
- 22:56Speaker 6: that they had in the past.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I want to see them healthy defensively. You know, I
- 23:02Speaker 1: think they're getting a couple guys back.
- 23:03Speaker 6: Damon Wilson has really stepped up and provided that edge pressure,
- 23:07Speaker 6: especially against Clemson. He kind of had a coming out
- 23:10Speaker 6: game in that game as far as being at least
- 23:13Speaker 6: in a Miami uniform.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Of course, he's been in Georgia and Missouri. But you
- 23:17Speaker 1: don't really have to sell me on Miami.
- 23:19Speaker 6: We did a segment last week on game day in
- 23:21Speaker 6: the heart of the SEC with Georgia and Alabama fans
- 23:25Speaker 6: around the game day set.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It was indoors.
- 23:28Speaker 6: And they asked me, we do the same spin.
- 23:32Speaker 1: With a grab bag or whatever.
- 23:33Speaker 6: And it was like, okay, my question was, who's the
- 23:36Speaker 6: best team? Forget the records. Who's the best team in
- 23:39Speaker 6: college football? an easy answer would have been Georgia or
- 23:43Speaker 6: Alabama or the winner of that game. And I, by
- 23:45Speaker 6: the way, they're right there in the discussion, but I said, Miami, I, I,
- 23:50Speaker 6: I think I, the only thing I worry about is
- 23:53Speaker 6: the depth receiver and the, and the health of their defense.
- 23:57Speaker 6: But if they can get everybody back, they, they are
- 24:01Speaker 6: a beautiful team. And like I said, Mensah is just
- 24:05Speaker 6: a different level of consistency and, than I think Carson Beck,
- 24:09Speaker 6: who I was a fan of.
- 24:10Speaker 1: But I just– I think there was a little bit
- 24:11Speaker 1: of an up and down last year with Beck. And
- 24:14Speaker 1: I don't feel that right now with Mensah. I think
- 24:16Speaker 1: he's the real deal.
- 24:18Speaker 5: It looks like they're going to get Xavier Lucas back
- 24:20Speaker 5: this weekend. It looks like Marquise Lightfoot is back.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Good.
- 24:23Speaker 5: And hopeful to get Frederic back. DeMarie Brown should be
- 24:26Speaker 5: back as well. It looks like these guys, as we
- 24:28Speaker 5: get later on in the year, are going to be
- 24:30Speaker 5: coming back, which would be good for a playoff run.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Not to go back to the Big 12, but I did–
- 24:35Speaker 5: I did have one question for you about that game
- 24:38Speaker 5: in terms of the national perception of the Big 12.
- 24:41Speaker 5: We saw Texas Tech get the shit kicked in last
- 24:44Speaker 5: year in the college football playoff against Oregon. The Big
- 24:47Speaker 5: 12 does not have a ton of marquee non-conference wins
- 24:52Speaker 5: against these big top 10 other power forward teams. If
- 24:56Speaker 5: BYU were to go out on their home field on
- 24:59Speaker 5: Saturday night and lose 27-3, What does that do moving
- 25:05Speaker 5: forward for the league? Because I think there's a really
- 25:07Speaker 5: good path for this league to get multiple teams into
- 25:10Speaker 5: the playoff. But does a BYU loss and not really
- 25:13Speaker 5: being competitive potentially on their home field affect maybe how
- 25:17Speaker 5: the committee is going to view this conference moving forward?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Fair, all fair. And I think whether we like to
- 25:23Speaker 1: admit it or not, past history affects all of our thoughts. Yes.
- 25:29Speaker 1: towards how we evaluate teams. It's just, and conferences.
- 25:32Speaker 6: It's just, I remember when Boise State was trying to
- 25:35Speaker 6: knock on the door of the BCS and it was like, okay,
- 25:38Speaker 6: it took them like five years of beating Oklahoma in
- 25:43Speaker 6: the Fiesta Bowl.
- 25:44Speaker 1: And we were like, oh, wow, Boise State.
- 25:46Speaker 6: Then they went to Virginia Tech when Virginia Tech was
- 25:49Speaker 6: good and they beat them at FedEx Field. And we
- 25:51Speaker 6: were like, and then they went to Georgia and played
- 25:54Speaker 6: them in the Georgia Dome. And it was like, it took,
- 25:57Speaker 6: it took like three or four years of those kinds
- 26:00Speaker 6: of wins for all be.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Like, you know what?
- 26:04Speaker 6: We need to take this team serious. Like Chris Peterson,
- 26:07Speaker 6: it's no longer, he's at the little kids table. Like
- 26:09Speaker 6: this dude's doing it. And it, and I think the
- 26:12Speaker 6: same thing right now, I'm with you. The big 12
- 26:14Speaker 6: looks good. I mean, there's depth in that conference. Uh,
- 26:18Speaker 6: quarterback plays been outstanding. Um, Oklahoma State's an example of that.
- 26:23Speaker 6: What they're doing after losing to Tulsa, they've kind of
- 26:26Speaker 6: surprised a lot of people. Utah's another example. They're doing
- 26:30Speaker 6: great things. But I'm just being honest. Until they win
- 26:34Speaker 6: against Notre Dame as a conference, until they go into
- 26:37Speaker 6: the postseason and have some success, I feel like them
- 26:40Speaker 6: and the ACC are kind of, other than Miami, and
- 26:44Speaker 6: used to be Clemson, they're just kind of like, I
- 26:47Speaker 6: think we'll all believe it.
- 26:49Speaker 1: When we see it.
- 26:51Speaker 6: That's why I think the SEC and the Big Ten
- 26:54Speaker 6: get the advantages when it comes to these kind of debates.
- 26:58Speaker 6: It's just– I know we're supposed to look at the
- 27:00Speaker 6: 2026 year, but I think we're all guilty of, oh,
- 27:04Speaker 6: I've seen this movie before.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Like, here we go.
- 27:07Speaker 6: And they need to break that. They need to break
- 27:10Speaker 6: that because a great discussion– Bear and I were having
- 27:13Speaker 6: this earlier in the week– We all love the Big Ten.
- 27:17Speaker 6: You know, last three years, the Big Ten has had
- 27:20Speaker 6: the upper hand winning the championships, been 8-2, whatever it is,
- 27:23Speaker 6: against the SEC head-to-head in the postseason. When you take
- 27:28Speaker 6: the Blue Bloods, like Penn State and Michigan away, and
- 27:33Speaker 6: even Nebraska, you know, a setback last week, you take
- 27:36Speaker 6: some of these brands you know, you have Ohio State
- 27:39Speaker 6: and now Oregon with, you know, another setback, a second setback.
- 27:43Speaker 6: You look at Ohio State and Indiana, regardless of what
- 27:45Speaker 6: happens this week, who's the third or fourth team.
- 27:50Speaker 1: In the Big Ten, right? I mean, assuming they're going
- 27:52Speaker 1: to get three, right? I mean, who? Is it Iowa?
- 27:55Speaker 1: I mean, is it UCLA? Is it Nebraska? I don't
- 28:00Speaker 1: know who. It's just weird to me.
- 28:03Speaker 6: For a conference that's been kind of flexing its muscles
- 28:05Speaker 6: and saying, hey, we're better than everybody, all good, all
- 28:09Speaker 6: good up to the last three years. But what's going
- 28:12Speaker 6: on in 2026 is Oregon and Michigan and Penn State
- 28:16Speaker 6: really hurt the image or the depth of the conference.
- 28:19Speaker 6: And could they be left with potentially two? Can Iowa
- 28:23Speaker 6: run the table and be sitting out there at 11-1?
- 28:26Speaker 1: They're locked.
- 28:26Speaker 6: They're locked if they do that. I think it's an
- 28:29Speaker 6: interesting discussion. when you try to think, like, who is
- 28:33Speaker 6: that third and fourth and fifth team? Not right now,
- 28:37Speaker 6: but who's it going to be in three, four, five weeks?
- 28:41Speaker 6: Because right now you're just using Michigan or Penn State
- 28:45Speaker 6: or whoever, Oregon, up there, and they're not. So it
- 28:49Speaker 6: opens the door for someone else.
- 28:51Speaker 4: So you talked about the two superpowers of the Big Ten.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Last week, Herbie, you heard the call for the two
- 28:56Speaker 4: superpowers in the SEC. I mean, in Tuscaloosa, that was
- 28:59Speaker 4: a physical– heavyweight matchup, massive swings. The game flow is
- 29:05Speaker 4: probably my favorite aspect of the game, but it does
- 29:08Speaker 4: kind of throw Alabama into a pretty tricky spot this weekend.
- 29:12Speaker 4: So much expended, so much emotion, so much physicality. And
- 29:15Speaker 4: now you got to go on the road to kneel
- 29:18Speaker 4: in and you're objectively better than Tennessee, but this is
- 29:21Speaker 4: their Superbowl. You could be a little hungover with, with,
- 29:25Speaker 4: with how much, you know, this Alabama team and program
- 29:27Speaker 4: from calling them so much, how do you expect them
- 29:28Speaker 4: to respond to what is again, uh, Pretty tricky spot here.
- 29:33Speaker 6: Again, I hate to keep referencing your days in Baton
- 29:36Speaker 6: Rouge as a player, but listen, I played at Ohio
- 29:38Speaker 6: State and the world is. changed a lot since obviously
- 29:42Speaker 6: when I played and even since you played. And the
- 29:46Speaker 6: depth of these conferences after realignment, I'm just telling you
- 29:50Speaker 6: right now, I want to like talk about how tough
- 29:53Speaker 6: the Big Ten is when you go on the road.
- 29:56Speaker 6: The reality is I've never seen anything like what these
- 29:59Speaker 6: guys do in the SEC. I mean, they body blow
- 30:03Speaker 6: and play in a game where you're thinking, Oh my God,
- 30:06Speaker 6: they won.
- 30:06Speaker 1: They survived.
- 30:07Speaker 6: And it's like, by the time you get done celebrating
- 30:09Speaker 6: as a fan and you look at the next week,
- 30:11Speaker 6: who we got next week, it's like at Missouri or
- 30:14Speaker 6: at South Carolina or at Kentucky or, you know, this
- 30:19Speaker 6: week at Tennessee, it's like, there's.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Just, There's just no time. It's like you're drowning in
- 30:25Speaker 1: the ocean and you're fighting like hell to just get
- 30:29Speaker 1: up to catch a.
- 30:30Speaker 6: Breath and you submerge back down underneath. It never ends
- 30:35Speaker 6: in that conference. I'm not saying that as pro-SEC.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I'm just saying that as pro-college football fan.
- 30:42Speaker 6: What these teams do to each other and team, but
- 30:46Speaker 6: you lived it and you know, especially in the trenches,
- 30:49Speaker 6: it's just different. It's more like how the NFL, I
- 30:51Speaker 6: don't know how the NFL, these guys, I gotta, I
- 30:53Speaker 6: do these Thursday night games. I almost feel guilty as
- 30:56Speaker 6: I get ready to do the Broncos and the Seahawks
- 30:58Speaker 6: and spending Superbowl champs.
- 31:00Speaker 1: These guys were in bloodbaths last week.
- 31:03Speaker 6: And here they come, here they come limping in to
- 31:06Speaker 6: Thursday night.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I'm always like, Hey.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Guys, how are you?
- 31:09Speaker 7: You know, like it's every week.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how.
- 31:14Speaker 6: These guys are standing after what they did just four
- 31:18Speaker 6: days ago.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Right.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 31:19Speaker 6: And I feel the same kind of like, It's survival
- 31:23Speaker 6: of the fittest in the SEC.
- 31:25Speaker 1: I just, I never seen anything like it.
- 31:27Speaker 6: And so I don't, to answer how Alabama do, I
- 31:35Speaker 6: think the way the game ended and the fire from
- 31:39Speaker 6: Kalen DeBoer with Lee, the corner, the six, four corner
- 31:43Speaker 6: who kind of lost his, his shit there when it's
- 31:45Speaker 6: third and they're about to get off the field and
- 31:48Speaker 6: get the ball back. And he, he has a, just
- 31:51Speaker 6: a mental breakdown and it's very selfish act.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I think that could, and it's a rivalry game third,
- 31:59Speaker 1: third Saturday. And, and, and I should be enough to like,
- 32:05Speaker 1: get them ready to go.
- 32:07Speaker 6: But man, again, you know what it's like to, to
- 32:10Speaker 6: try to think you can bring fans.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I think underestimate this.
- 32:13Speaker 6: To think you can bring a fastball every single week
- 32:18Speaker 6: is just not reality. And when you bring that B-minus
- 32:21Speaker 6: game and you're on the road, get ready.
- 32:25Speaker 1: That's how upsets happen. You bring that B-minus game, whether.
- 32:28Speaker 6: It's mentally you're not as sharp, physically you're a little
- 32:31Speaker 6: beat up, you're just not hitting on all cylinders.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Again, you know what that's like.
- 32:36Speaker 6: And the other teams over there trying to– Tennessee's trying
- 32:39Speaker 6: to change their outcome of their season.
- 32:42Speaker 1: They can't figure out the quarterback. They beat Alabama. Oh
- 32:45Speaker 1: my gosh. The crowd rushes the field. Hypel's the man.
- 32:48Speaker 1: He did it again.
- 32:49Speaker 6: They beat Alabama. I mean, here we go, man. We're going,
- 32:53Speaker 6: we're going to make it to the SC. Like that's it.
- 32:54Speaker 6: That's what's at stake for Tennessee. Alabama's like, man, we can, we,
- 32:59Speaker 6: we could show, you know, that we've got determination and,
- 33:03Speaker 6: and we can sustain this, even though we're.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Off of last week. I don't, I haven't even looked
- 33:07Speaker 1: what Alabama has next week.
- 33:10Speaker 6: But it's, I'm sure another game that's, potentially tricky like
- 33:13Speaker 6: like this one is so um i.
- 33:16Speaker 7: Think they'll they got a and m at home next
- 33:19Speaker 7: to talent wise is good they just haven't put it
- 33:24Speaker 7: together yet and again a win against alabama could could
- 33:27Speaker 7: fix a lot of their problems.
- 33:28Speaker 6: So i think they'll be okay um but i i
- 33:32Speaker 6: think it's a tricky tricky game what are they what
- 33:35Speaker 6: are they favored by eight seven or eight eight and
- 33:38Speaker 6: a half yeah Yeah, I think it's tricky, but I really,
- 33:41Speaker 6: let me just say this, I really like both of
- 33:43Speaker 6: those teams.
- 33:45Speaker 1: I think they're real.
- 33:46Speaker 6: I think you're right when you say they're the two
- 33:47Speaker 6: top teams in the SEC as we.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Sit here right now.
- 33:51Speaker 6: And if they can stay healthy, those two teams either
- 33:53Speaker 6: rematch in Atlanta or in the postseason, you know, when
- 33:57Speaker 6: we get to the playoffs.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Have you arrived at the point yet where you have
- 34:01Speaker 2: forgotten what week it is in the college football season?
- 34:05Speaker 6: Well, I've arrived at that point when someone says, hey,
- 34:08Speaker 6: how was game.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Day last.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Week?
- 34:13Speaker 1: I'm like, where were we? Ole Miss?
- 34:18Speaker 5: You're carrying the key sleeve at this point in the year, right?
- 34:23Speaker 4: The hotel gate, the room, 719.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I got no idea. I got no idea, man.
- 34:29Speaker 6: I just look at film. I know teams I'm getting
- 34:32Speaker 6: ready to call. and I get ready for game day,
- 34:35Speaker 6: and it's a whirlwind. It's a whirlwind until we get to.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Try to get to Thanksgiving.
- 34:43Speaker 6: If I could get to Thanksgiving, I feel like I
- 34:45Speaker 6: start to see a light.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I start to see a light.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Herbie, right before you came on, we were discussing Indiana,
- 34:55Speaker 2: Ohio State, and whether or not we've arrived at a
- 34:57Speaker 2: place where there is Kurt Cignetti fatigue.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Have we?
- 35:00Speaker 6: Well, for me personally, I had Kurt Cignetti fatigue after
- 35:05Speaker 6: his first year, some of the comments that he was making.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Wasn't a big fan of that. Google me and calling
- 35:14Speaker 6: teams out. But after talking to him, I'm very candid.
- 35:19Speaker 6: I went and visited him this summer. He's not doing
- 35:22Speaker 6: that as much now that he's kind of proven that
- 35:25Speaker 6: this program can win. He told me, and he's told
- 35:28Speaker 6: people publicly when he does interviews, I kind of felt
- 35:31Speaker 6: like I had to do that to just kind of
- 35:33Speaker 6: wake up our fan base and wake up our team
- 35:36Speaker 6: to make them realize, you know, quit being the doormat.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Quit being like us, you know, Indiana.
- 35:44Speaker 6: And he's like, I had to kind of like shock
- 35:46Speaker 6: the system a little bit. And if you go back
- 35:48Speaker 6: and listen to some of his comments, that makes sense.
- 35:52Speaker 6: But I think he's kind of, that part of it
- 35:56Speaker 6: is kind of slowed down. He is who he is
- 35:59Speaker 6: on the sideline, chewing his gum with those facial expressions.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I just think that's kind of his deal, right? But
- 36:07Speaker 1: I don't know. I respect the hell out of what
- 36:10Speaker 1: he's done. years now in his third year. How can
- 36:14Speaker 1: you not? He might have as good a coordinator combination
- 36:19Speaker 1: with Shanahan on offense and Haynes on defense as that
- 36:23Speaker 1: there is in the country. If he can hold on
- 36:25Speaker 1: to those guys, because those guys are both going to
- 36:27Speaker 1: be head coaches. Haynes, I can't believe he's not already
- 36:30Speaker 1: a head coach. That guy is a superstar. I think
- 36:33Speaker 1: he's the best defensive coordinator in the country. So I
- 36:40Speaker 1: respect the hell out of what they're doing.
- 36:42Speaker 6: I'll be honest, I didn't think it was going to
- 36:44Speaker 6: be something that was going to be sustained. I didn't
- 36:47Speaker 6: think his excellence would be every week and every year,
- 36:51Speaker 6: but here we are. And it took me last year,
- 36:53Speaker 6: midway through the year to be like, there's substance to this.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Some of it's, you know, we thought was bullshit. It's not.
- 37:00Speaker 1: There's real substance here.
- 37:01Speaker 6: And all you can do, you don't have to like
- 37:04Speaker 6: some of this stuff, but you got to tip your
- 37:06Speaker 6: cap to how those dudes are prepared, how few mental
- 37:10Speaker 6: mistakes they make. I don't know if they are where
- 37:13Speaker 6: they were last year right now. It doesn't feel like
- 37:16Speaker 6: it at this point. But with him coaching and those coordinators,
- 37:19Speaker 6: who's to say that it can't become that down the road?
- 37:21Speaker 6: But I still feel like they're They're a work in
- 37:24Speaker 6: progress from trying to reach the team that for a
- 37:29Speaker 6: year ago, obviously. All right, Herbie.
- 37:31Speaker 4: I know again, it's insane that we're even going to
- 37:34Speaker 4: talk to you, given all the games that you call
- 37:35Speaker 4: and traveling all around the country. So quickly last one
- 37:38Speaker 4: of the way out. What do you think about the Buckeyes?
- 37:40Speaker 4: They're going to Bloomington to take on that machine. You
- 37:43Speaker 4: just talk about, I think they get it done. Hmm.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Don't know yet.
- 37:47Speaker 6: I think, obviously, athletically, I tell you, the matchup of
- 37:50Speaker 6: the weekend, there's so many great games.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I mean, everybody, Barrett and I were saying, so many
- 37:55Speaker 1: great games November 7th. This weekend, with all the results,
- 37:58Speaker 1: I mean, this weekend's insane.
- 38:01Speaker 6: So with all the games and all the matchups, the
- 38:04Speaker 6: Ohio State offense was saying, and Jeremiah Smith and company,
- 38:08Speaker 6: against that Bryant-Haynes defense, That could be as good of
- 38:13Speaker 6: a matchup that we have this weekend. Cannot wait to
- 38:17Speaker 6: see just Arthur Smith and Ryan Day and how they
- 38:24Speaker 6: prepare for that, trying to create some explosive plays. against Haynes,
- 38:29Speaker 6: who's going to move those defensive alignment around.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I think there's an advantage at the line of scrimmage
- 38:33Speaker 1: for Indiana.
- 38:34Speaker 6: I think there's a massive advantage with the skill for
- 38:37Speaker 6: Ohio state on that side of the ball.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Will the line of scrimmage be the equalizer? I guess
- 38:42Speaker 1: we'll see, uh, is Hoover ready for a game that,
- 38:46Speaker 1: that I think we'll see he's played a ton of football.
- 38:48Speaker 6: This will be probably the toughest opponent, most athletic opponent
- 38:51Speaker 6: he's seen probably. Um, When I played at Ohio State,
- 38:56Speaker 6: it was 80% Ohio State. It was sold out, but
- 38:57Speaker 6: it was 80% Ohio State and 20% Indiana. And now
- 39:01Speaker 6: it's a real home field advantage. They've done a good
- 39:04Speaker 6: job of showing up and getting behind their team. So
- 39:08Speaker 6: I don't know what the spread is in this game.
- 39:10Speaker 6: It feels like a coin flip to me personally. Would
- 39:14Speaker 6: probably give Indiana advantage because of the line of scrimmage.
- 39:19Speaker 6: But it's so hard to go against... Jeremiah Smith right now,
- 39:24Speaker 6: the way that kid's playing. I mean, can't you just
- 39:27Speaker 6: see the fourth quarter saying has the ball in his hands?
- 39:30Speaker 6: and number four makes a play that just even if
- 39:32Speaker 6: you haven't doubled, he just he's that guy.
- 39:35Speaker 1: He just he will not.
- 39:37Speaker 6: And Arthur Smith, to his credit, he doesn't go like
- 39:39Speaker 6: a lot of college coordinators like, oh, they're doubling him. okay,
- 39:43Speaker 6: we'll see you next week, Jeremiah. Who else are we
- 39:45Speaker 6: going to get the ball to? He's like, oh, you're
- 39:47Speaker 6: going to double him? No problem.
- 39:49Speaker 1: We're going to move him. We're going to put him
- 39:50Speaker 1: in a bunch.
- 39:51Speaker 6: We're going to use, even if you double him, we're
- 39:54Speaker 6: still going to get him the football. So he's going
- 39:57Speaker 6: to get 12 to 15 catches. It's just, that's the
- 40:00Speaker 6: way it works.
- 40:01Speaker 1: And can you prevent him from getting out and making
- 40:04Speaker 1: an explosive play? We've not seen that happen yet. We'll
- 40:08Speaker 1: see if Indiana can do it Saturday.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Bear, how do you feel about this? T-Bob, how do
- 40:11Speaker 2: you feel about this? Herbie, we'll get you out of
- 40:13Speaker 2: here in just a second. But Herbie is traveling with someone,
- 40:16Speaker 2: and that someone has a birthday here, and I'm thinking
- 40:18Speaker 2: we sing happy birthday to Peter.
- 40:20Speaker 3: What do you guys think, huh?
- 40:21Speaker 4: Yeah, let's do it.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Happy birthday to you.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Happy birthday to you.
- 40:31Speaker 3: Happy birthday, dear Peter.
- 40:35Speaker 5: Happy birthday to you.
- 40:38Speaker 4: We know that.
- 40:42Speaker 3: I love that.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Happy birthday, Peter.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Oh, that's great, guys. We appreciate that.
- 40:47Speaker 3: All right, man.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Very nice of you.
- 40:49Speaker 7: Yes.
- 40:49Speaker 3: All right, fellas. Safe travels. It looks like you're traveling
- 40:52Speaker 3: in style, as you should be. Say hi to the boys.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Say hi to all the boys living around on Thursday
- 40:58Speaker 3: Night Football.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I will. I will. You guys have a great week.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Enjoy Saturday.
- 41:03Speaker 3: All right. Thank you, Herbie.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 41:04Speaker 3: Thanks for being the best thing on our TV. We
- 41:06Speaker 3: appreciate it, bud.
- 41:07Speaker 4: The legend, Kirk Herbstreak. We'll be back right after this
- 41:10Speaker 4: to wrap up this episode of College Football Show with
- 41:13Speaker 4: Stu Gotts and the Bear. All right, welcome back. Man,
- 41:37Speaker 4: that was awesome, too. I mean, thank you for setting
- 41:40Speaker 4: that up. I love Herbie. Whatever, I don't know if
- 41:43Speaker 4: I ever got to interview him that intimately. He's the
- 41:45Speaker 4: fucking man. He's awesome. But right now, it's time for
- 41:49Speaker 4: the medal stand. That's right, Bear. Gold, silver, bronze. What
- 41:53Speaker 4: should we be playing this weekend?
- 41:55Speaker 3: Bear, before you get to that, Mikey A.
- 41:57Speaker 2: do you think Kirk was thinking, because we've had him
- 41:59Speaker 2: on our show, separate from the college football show here
- 42:01Speaker 2: with Sagats and Bear, we didn't talk any college football
- 42:04Speaker 2: with him.
- 42:05Speaker 3: He had no idea what to do. That had to
- 42:08Speaker 3: be jarring to him, right?
- 42:09Speaker 5: Yes.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:12Speaker 5: Until you saved it at the end by singing in
- 42:14Speaker 5: his ear into his earbuds.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:19Speaker 5: Happy birthday to a dog who literally walked away when
- 42:22Speaker 5: you two started singing.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Can you blame him?
- 42:25Speaker 3: The dog's more famous than he is, and he knows it. Yes. Anyway.
- 42:28Speaker 3: He does know it. By design, I think.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Let's get to the metal stand here, as T-Bob was
- 42:33Speaker 2: trying to get to. The medal stand, the picks here
- 42:36Speaker 2: from the Bears have been great this season.
- 42:38Speaker 4: We're going to go bronze.
- 42:40Speaker 5: We'll start with Indiana plus the 3.5 against Ohio State.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Wow.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Kirk kind of alluded to it there with the advantage
- 42:49Speaker 5: that Indiana has up front. I think that could be
- 42:53Speaker 5: a problem. It feels like a field goal type game.
- 42:56Speaker 5: So I am going to take the Hoosiers plus the 3.5.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Silver.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Silver.
- 43:01Speaker 5: I'm going to lay the points, lay the 10, 10
- 43:03Speaker 5: and a half with Notre Dame this week. I don't
- 43:05Speaker 5: think BYU is going to be able to score. Again,
- 43:09Speaker 5: he kind of answered some of the questions I had
- 43:12Speaker 5: for him before I was able to ask them.
- 43:14Speaker 4: It reminds me a whole lot.
- 43:17Speaker 5: The BYU offense, what they did going into the Texas
- 43:20Speaker 5: Tech game last year, both of them, the regular season
- 43:22Speaker 5: and the conference title game. I don't think they have
- 43:25Speaker 5: an answer for that type of athleticism. And the gold
- 43:28Speaker 5: medal play, It's set up. The line is telling you
- 43:32Speaker 5: that Wisconsin is the right side against UCLA, getting three.
- 43:36Speaker 5: The Bruins off of that upset win last week. Now
- 43:39Speaker 5: you're favored. That game last week was more about bad
- 43:44Speaker 5: Oregon than it was UCLA. UCLA commits a ton of
- 43:48Speaker 5: stupid penalties. I think Wisconsin is pretty good. We saw
- 43:51Speaker 5: them put up a good fight for two and a
- 43:53Speaker 5: half quarters or so against Notre Dame in the opener.
- 43:56Speaker 5: So I would be taking the Badgers here to potentially
- 43:59Speaker 5: pull that upset.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Wow.
- 44:00Speaker 3: All right.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Okay. Wow.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Going into the Rose Bowl.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Yes. I like the gold medal game.
- 44:04Speaker 4: A vaunted home field advantage of the Rose Bowl.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Fair.
- 44:08Speaker 1: 28,000 strong. Yeah.
- 44:09Speaker 2: I hate doing this. I like the gold medal game.
- 44:11Speaker 2: I like the silver medal game. I'll usually just trust
- 44:13Speaker 2: you and trust you blindly. I do not like your
- 44:15Speaker 2: bronze medal game.
- 44:16Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 44:17Speaker 1: That's okay.
- 44:18Speaker 5: If there's one I'm going to lose, let it be
- 44:20Speaker 5: the bronze because I'm friendly with Ryan, and whenever I
- 44:24Speaker 5: have no dog in the fight, I do like to
- 44:27Speaker 5: see Ryan and Ohio State win.
- 44:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 44:29Speaker 4: And in honor of Rachel, our wonderful producer, number 25
- 44:34Speaker 4: Northwestern at Michigan State. How about it, boy? A little
- 44:37Speaker 4: Pat Fitzgerald revenge game.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Let's go, Cats. Get it done this weekend.
- 44:42Speaker 4: You know what, T-Bob?
- 44:43Speaker 5: You mentioned the ranked teams as well. of the right games,
- 44:48Speaker 5: three of the six longest home winning streaks are on
- 44:50Speaker 5: the line this week. Indiana's got the longest. You've got
- 44:53Speaker 5: Ole Miss that's got a lengthy home winning streak. BYU's
- 44:55Speaker 5: got a lengthy home winning streak. And you've got two
- 44:57Speaker 5: of those teams that are dogs. So we could see
- 44:59Speaker 5: two of the longer home winning streaks go down this
- 45:02Speaker 5: weekend as well if what Vegas says rings true.
- 45:06Speaker 2: I do wonder, guys, if there's a next Indiana out there,
- 45:08Speaker 2: if there is indeed one. And I don't think we'll
- 45:10Speaker 2: ever see it again because Indiana was the worst college
- 45:13Speaker 2: football program in the history of the sport Until they
- 45:15Speaker 2: became national champions a year ago.
- 45:18Speaker 3: But if there is a next Indiana. Could Northwestern be
- 45:21Speaker 3: that school?
- 45:22Speaker 4: So Northwestern does fit the billing. And they have the
- 45:26Speaker 4: economic buy-in.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 45:28Speaker 4: In terms of traditionally struggling. And now having resources. Having
- 45:32Speaker 4: a very good coach in Braun. The one that I
- 45:34Speaker 4: can't escape is Kentucky. Just because it works all the
- 45:37Speaker 4: way down to the basketball analogy. Right. And they're so desperate.
- 45:41Speaker 4: They're used to having sports success. They're so desperate to
- 45:43Speaker 4: have sports success.
- 45:44Speaker 1: And again.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Anytime you play this game, what we're really talking about
- 45:48Speaker 4: is becoming great value Indiana because nobody will ever achieve
- 45:51Speaker 4: what the Hoosiers did, I don't believe. But, yeah, Northwestern,
- 45:55Speaker 4: definitely Kentucky on that list. Bear, help me out here
- 45:59Speaker 4: because Stu wants to open up the other day's show
- 46:02Speaker 4: talking crap about LSU. Mississippi State, it's one of the
- 46:05Speaker 4: ranked-unranked matchups. Mississippi State heading to Baton Rouge this weekend. Uh,
- 46:10Speaker 4: Camaro Taylor's health is probably the biggest aspect in this. Uh,
- 46:14Speaker 4: you're shaking your head. What's going on here. That's the thing.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Like until you know the status of K one, like what, what, what,
- 46:22Speaker 4: what can you say about the game?
- 46:23Speaker 5: Like if he plays like, like clearly, uh, let's.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Say if he plays, if he plays, what do you like? Is,
- 46:29Speaker 4: is he, cause Blake Baker's defense has been very good
- 46:31Speaker 4: at times and a sieve at others. If Camaro Taylor
- 46:34Speaker 4: is playing, will he have consistent success against LSU's defense?
- 46:40Speaker 5: I don't think so. LSU has taken a lot of
- 46:43Speaker 5: shit this year. Lane is the lightning rod. They're better
- 46:48Speaker 5: than what their record says they are. If you look
- 46:50Speaker 5: at them analytically, statistically, metrically, they still power rate as
- 46:55Speaker 5: a top 12, 10 type team, even with a 2-2 record.
- 46:59Speaker 5: It feels like the game's early. So that obviously is
- 47:04Speaker 5: a big issue for the LSU. the home crowd there,
- 47:06Speaker 5: not able to get sauced up all day and enjoy
- 47:09Speaker 5: the pregame festivities. But I think that LSU defense is
- 47:13Speaker 5: still pretty good, and I wonder if State going on
- 47:16Speaker 5: the road here. I always like to joke about the
- 47:18Speaker 5: underdog with fleas, like an underdog that all these people
- 47:22Speaker 5: are going to jump on because it's a big number
- 47:24Speaker 5: and it looks good, and then they go in there,
- 47:26Speaker 5: and next thing you know, you look up and it's 38-17.
- 47:28Speaker 5: I worry about that on Saturday afternoon at Baton Rouge.
- 47:31Speaker 5: It feels like a lay it or pass with the
- 47:35Speaker 5: Bayou Bengals there.
- 47:36Speaker 4: I mean, kicking off at 11 a.m. Get the hell
- 47:39Speaker 4: out of here.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Man, 11 a.m.
- 47:40Speaker 4: Kickoffs. Surrounded by all these Midwestern nerds who think that's
- 47:44Speaker 4: when God designed football to be played. God designed football
- 47:47Speaker 4: to be played under the lights when you've been able
- 47:49Speaker 4: to drink an entire fifth of bourbon before you step
- 47:52Speaker 4: foot in the stadium.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 47:53Speaker 4: None of this waking up and bringing a Starbucks into
- 47:56Speaker 4: the cathedral with you. Get the hell out of here, dude.
- 48:00Speaker 4: All right, last one real quick here. One minute. Mizzou
- 48:02Speaker 4: at Ole Miss, 13-9. This is an odd one here because, like,
- 48:09Speaker 4: Ole Miss kind of disappeared from our consciousness for a bit, right?
- 48:12Speaker 4: They get dominated by Florida. They go on the bye.
- 48:14Speaker 4: They kick Vanderbilt's ass. In the interim, Mizzou has responded
- 48:19Speaker 4: very nicely, and they've been on a bit of a
- 48:22Speaker 4: run here. does Mizzou can the triumvirate of Austin Simmons,
- 48:27Speaker 4: Caden Lee, Jamal Roberts, can they go into Oxford and
- 48:31Speaker 4: take down Chambliss and co? I think they can.
- 48:35Speaker 5: Missouri was like kind of a little bit of a,
- 48:37Speaker 5: a punchline earlier on the year, just because they really
- 48:39Speaker 5: hadn't done anything. And they were hanging around the rankings
- 48:42Speaker 5: even after a loss. And then they came out and they,
- 48:45Speaker 5: You got the wins that you needed to get. You
- 48:47Speaker 5: blew out Florida. You blew out A & M. And
- 48:50Speaker 5: now here, I think they got a real chance to
- 48:54Speaker 5: go in here and win. And if you're looking down
- 48:55Speaker 5: the road, they are potentially a team that could be
- 48:59Speaker 5: worthy of a college football playoff consideration. Because you mentioned,
- 49:02Speaker 5: that offense is scary good. And I think Ole Miss'
- 49:05Speaker 5: defense at times, like we saw in the Swamp, They
- 49:09Speaker 5: are a little soft up front. If they can get
- 49:12Speaker 5: that running game going and then give Simmons some time,
- 49:15Speaker 5: the one biggest thing that I worry about this week
- 49:19Speaker 5: is Austin Simmons. needing to just take a deep breath, relax,
- 49:23Speaker 5: don't get too hyped up for the return to Oxford.
- 49:27Speaker 4: Bear, great takes by the Bear, and I still can't
- 49:30Speaker 4: believe that Stu said, Signetti's a made man. Has nothing
- 49:35Speaker 4: more to do in this life. Enjoy it, Kurt Cignetti.
- 49:37Speaker 4: You are truly one of one. That is something I
- 49:41Speaker 4: never expected to hear. Stu, Bear, Mikey, Rachel, everybody, thank
- 49:46Speaker 4: you so much, guys. Taylor as well. Sorry we didn't
- 49:48Speaker 4: talk UNC. Anyway, y'all have a great weekend, guys. I
- 49:52Speaker 4: hope you win all your bets. Enjoy this incredible Saturday.
- 49:56Speaker 4: And we'll be back next week to wrap it all
- 49:58Speaker 4: up with more College Football Show with Stu Gatz and
- 50:00Speaker 4: the Bear.
