- 0:07Speaker 1: Max. Max Muncy. How come we don't have a Max
- 0:09Speaker 1: Muncy shirt? We got all these players and we don't
- 0:12Speaker 1: have one of our favorite guests of all time. We
- 0:14Speaker 1: don't have a Max Muncy shirt.
- 0:17Speaker 2: That's on you guys. It's not on me.
- 0:20Speaker 1: What would the animation be? Because you see the Murakami
- 0:23Speaker 1: ones kind of sick. Juniors got a little spicy color.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What would the Max Muncy one be? Just dingers?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, probably. Something basic like that. Not too much flair
- 0:35Speaker 2: when it comes out of me, so.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Glasses or no glasses?
- 0:40Speaker 2: I mean, that depends. Lately, it's been glasses. My most
- 0:44Speaker 2: recent bobblehead had glasses on it, so I might have
- 0:47Speaker 2: to put the glasses on there.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We'll talk to Sarah about it. Maybe we can get
- 0:52Speaker 1: you some old school Chris Sabo rec specs on your
- 0:57Speaker 1: Max Muncy shirt.
- 1:00Speaker 2: When I first started, I got sent a pair of
- 1:04Speaker 2: prescription glasses that were white on the outside and when
- 1:08Speaker 2: I put them on uh everyone kept calling me Horace Grant.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That's awesome that's awesome um before we get into the
- 1:17Speaker 1: Dodgers stuff I have to say this and people don't
- 1:20Speaker 1: know this but I did a Dodger game Braves Dodgers
- 1:22Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago in Atlanta Chris Sale absolutely shoved
- 1:27Speaker 1: and I and I and I and I don't talk
- 1:28Speaker 1: about stuff like this a lot but my son was
- 1:30Speaker 1: able to come to the game okay And I think
- 1:33Speaker 1: you guys lost. Was it 1-0? I think Drake Baldwin
- 1:35Speaker 1: hit a leadoff homer, and that was it. It was 1-0.
- 1:37Speaker 1: There was a CG by Chris Sale. You didn't play, Max,
- 1:40Speaker 1: so you're off the hook on this one.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he was throwing 100. No big deal.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, no. Sale-itis. Way down here. Yeah, no. But I
- 1:48Speaker 1: want to say this about Chris Sale. First of all,
- 1:51Speaker 1: he's a buddy of mine. I've known him forever. He
- 1:53Speaker 1: came out, talked to my son and his teammates. But
- 1:55Speaker 1: Dave Roberts after the game. I talked to him. We
- 1:59Speaker 1: have our pregame meeting. And this just shows you what
- 2:01Speaker 1: a class organization I feel like you guys have. Dave Roberts,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I talked to him. He knows my son. He always
- 2:07Speaker 1: asks me about my son. He said, I said, my
- 2:08Speaker 1: son's here. He would love to see you. And he said, yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And I said, listen, if you guys lose, I'm not
- 2:13Speaker 1: even going to bother. He goes, ah, are you kidding me?
- 2:16Speaker 1: He's like, no, bring him down. I'll come out. And
- 2:18Speaker 1: I get, man, I give that guy all the credit
- 2:20Speaker 1: in the world. You guys just got it shoved. He
- 2:21Speaker 1: came out, talked to my son for like 10 minutes
- 2:24Speaker 1: in his teammates. And then I saw you and I
- 2:26Speaker 1: saw glass now, Freddie and Jason Hayward. I mean, you
- 2:29Speaker 1: guys are unbelievable to take two minutes. I know you
- 2:31Speaker 1: guys were as a getaway day. So from the bottom
- 2:34Speaker 1: of my heart, thank all of y'all for coming out
- 2:37Speaker 1: and just speaking to my son. It meant the, you
- 2:38Speaker 1: know what it did for him, Max? It made him
- 2:40Speaker 1: look like the cool kid in school. Cause all his
- 2:42Speaker 1: college teammates were there. Like, you don't know any of
- 2:44Speaker 1: these guys. And Freddie comes up and gives them a hug.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Dave's all, you know, they're all giving them a big hug.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So it made him feel like the cool kid. So
- 2:50Speaker 1: thank you.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, man. I mean, That's the thing. Losing sucks,
- 2:56Speaker 2: but it's not the end of the world. You still
- 2:59Speaker 2: have to go on with your life. You still have
- 3:01Speaker 2: to go home. Be husband, be dad. Be nice to
- 3:05Speaker 2: people at the stadium. Be nice to people all around.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Losing is not the end of the world. It sucks,
- 3:10Speaker 2: but you still have to move on. That's how we've
- 3:13Speaker 2: always approached it. You have another game the next day.
- 3:17Speaker 2: There's no point in being a jerk to everybody around.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Before we get to anything else you brought it up
- 3:26Speaker 1: before the season some people said oh yeah they're gonna
- 3:28Speaker 1: win 104 games now that you're at the season you
- 3:31Speaker 1: guys have 88 you're in the season how hard would
- 3:33Speaker 1: it be to have gotten to 104 games when you
- 3:36Speaker 1: think about all that you guys have gone through ups
- 3:38Speaker 1: and downs everything.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah you know um a lot of a lot of
- 3:45Speaker 2: mileage on this team right now um you know you
- 3:47Speaker 2: think about the last two seasons that we played obviously
- 3:50Speaker 2: we won but they were also two of the longest
- 3:53Speaker 2: seasons in history in terms of when we started, when
- 3:56Speaker 2: we finished starting overseas. And so it's just, it's a
- 4:00Speaker 2: lot of mileage on everybody and to, to show up
- 4:04Speaker 2: and try to win 110 games like that, that would
- 4:07Speaker 2: have been almost impossible to do. It's just not realistic.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Is there something you guys do different than obviously you're
- 4:14Speaker 1: getting older, you have more mileage. Has there been new
- 4:18Speaker 1: things that the Dodgers have brought in? Like, You talked
- 4:21Speaker 1: about the one-time sleep specialists and all that stuff that
- 4:25Speaker 1: have helped you here later in your career, but also
- 4:28Speaker 1: all your teammates.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I mean, the thing that everyone's been crushing lately is
- 4:33Speaker 2: the hyperbaric chamber. I know that's not a new thing,
- 4:36Speaker 2: but we got a pretty fancy one, and guys have
- 4:40Speaker 2: really been crushing that one lately, and guys are starting
- 4:44Speaker 2: to swear by that. So I think there's a pretty
- 4:47Speaker 2: long sign-up sheet to get into that thing every single day.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Is it a single or do they have a hyperbaric room?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Cause I know some places try to do the room
- 4:54Speaker 1: or is it just a single?
- 4:56Speaker 2: No, they got one of those like, uh, uh, I mean,
- 5:00Speaker 2: it looks like the Saturn five in there. Um, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 2: it's a two seater has the recliners and everything in it. Uh,
- 5:06Speaker 2: it's a pretty nice one. They got it shipped from
- 5:08Speaker 2: overseas somewhere. I don't know where, but, uh, uh, it's
- 5:11Speaker 2: pretty legit, but it's not a room, but it does
- 5:14Speaker 2: fit two people.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Is he, is it, Is there somebody that you're like,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I don't want to go in there with them because
- 5:20Speaker 1: every time I'm in there, Freddy farts, so it just
- 5:22Speaker 1: ruins the hyperbaric chamber? No.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You'd have to ask other people that one. You get
- 5:33Speaker 2: in there and you just have a good time. You
- 5:35Speaker 2: have to put the mask on and everything. I think
- 5:38Speaker 2: most people just go in there and they watch a
- 5:39Speaker 2: show and they get on their phone. There's not too
- 5:43Speaker 2: much going on.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Did Shohei get it sent over? Did Yamamoto throw the
- 5:49Speaker 1: javelin in there? I mean, these are the things that
- 5:51Speaker 1: Dodger fans want to know because they don't hear enough
- 5:53Speaker 1: about this kind of stuff, right? So who's your favorite
- 5:56Speaker 1: guy to sit in there with? Is there a guy,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know, like who's your favorite guy? Do you watch
- 6:00Speaker 1: the same show? Do you guys have like headphone splitters
- 6:02Speaker 1: where you guys watch the same movie?
- 6:06Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know what kind of phone
- 6:07Speaker 2: you're still rocking these days, but there's not too many
- 6:09Speaker 2: splitters out there.
- 6:11Speaker 1: There is. I got one right here. Look, look, right here. Look, splitter. Look.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Two for one.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there's not too many of those out there these days. No,
- 6:21Speaker 2: I mean, everyone just kind of does their own thing.
- 6:23Speaker 2: There's nothing special going on. It's just a, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 2: reclining seat. You just get in there and you just
- 6:28Speaker 2: kind of relax for about 45 minutes and then you
- 6:31Speaker 2: get out, you feel good, go about your day.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Dehydration is real, people. So are quince electrolyte stick packs.
- 6:40Speaker 3: All of a sudden, you don't need some big bottle
- 6:43Speaker 3: to carry around. Just these little packets if you suddenly
- 6:46Speaker 3: feel like you need a little hydration. Raspberry salt, delicious.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Citrus salt, my personal favorite. And watermelon salt for those
- 6:53Speaker 3: watermelon lovers out there.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Very solid. Just in your water bottle. I'm a watermelon guy.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It's quick, easy in the morning. Wake up, feeling a
- 7:01Speaker 1: little down. Throw some in there. Feeling great? Throw some
- 7:03Speaker 1: in there because it'll keep that high going. So stay
- 7:06Speaker 1: on it. It hydrates you because of that fermented rice.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Great tasting. And it makes you feel better.
- 7:12Speaker 3: They're made in the USA, rigorously third-party tested. Give your
- 7:16Speaker 3: body what it really needs to stay hydrated. Quince.com slash
- 7:19Speaker 3: foul gets you free shipping on your order and 365-day returns.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That's quince.com slash foul for free shipping and 365-day returns.

- 7:34Speaker 1: I got to talk. You brought him up, Freddie Freeman.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I have to ask this question. Did Freddie annoy the
- 7:39Speaker 1: crap out of everybody last night because he had to
- 7:41Speaker 1: DH for the first time in five years? Instead of
- 7:43Speaker 1: him being over there at first base, hugging every guy
- 7:46Speaker 1: that gets a hit, slapping them all in the butt, hey,
- 7:47Speaker 1: way to go, way to get a hit, man. Was
- 7:49Speaker 1: he in the dugout wearing everybody out last night? It's
- 7:51Speaker 1: the first time he had DH in five years.
- 7:54Speaker 2: No, he was, if anything, he was quieter than normal,
- 8:00Speaker 2: you know, because I don't think there was anything to
- 8:01Speaker 2: take his mind off of his at-bats, so. You know,
- 8:05Speaker 2: he's always been adamant he doesn't like the DH. And
- 8:08Speaker 2: there's a lot of us that feel that way. You know,
- 8:10Speaker 2: when you DH, you don't really entirely feel like you're
- 8:13Speaker 2: part of the game. You know, because when you get
- 8:16Speaker 2: to flush your back and go focus on defense, it
- 8:18Speaker 2: kind of, you know, makes things a little bit easier. But, yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 2: he's always been adamant he doesn't like DH. But, yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 2: he had that one last night.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Okay, so we just showed his stats. The biggest stat
- 8:30Speaker 1: on the board, if we can show that number again
- 8:32Speaker 1: with Max's face, it would be great. Do you see
- 8:34Speaker 1: the biggest– do you know what the biggest stat on
- 8:36Speaker 1: that board is for Freddie Freeman? Do you know which
- 8:37Speaker 1: one he cares about the most?
- 8:42Speaker 2: The average. Yep.
- 8:45Speaker 1: 297. He wants to hit 300 so bad. And I
- 8:47Speaker 1: talked to him about this when I saw you on Atlanta.
- 8:49Speaker 1: He's like the one guy that I've ever heard in
- 8:52Speaker 1: the recent game. Everyone's worried about OPS and homers and,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you know, slug. And he's like, I just, if I
- 8:56Speaker 1: know if I hit 300, I'm having a great year
- 8:58Speaker 1: because that means I'm slugging. I'm getting on base. So
- 9:01Speaker 1: how different is that to hear a guy actually say,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I want to hit 300?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Well, he wants to hit 300 the right way by
- 9:09Speaker 2: driving the ball and, and, uh, you know, it's, it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: one thing to say, I want to hit 300 and
- 9:15Speaker 2: then you're slapping the ball around and it's nothing to say,
- 9:17Speaker 2: I want to hit 300 and you're hitting the ball
- 9:18Speaker 2: in the gap almost every single time. And, um, you know,
- 9:23Speaker 2: that's what, that's what Freddie's always done is you're going
- 9:25Speaker 2: to look up there and he's going to have 40,
- 9:27Speaker 2: 50 doubles a year. He's going to have 20 home runs.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It's like, it's a lot of slug in there for
- 9:31Speaker 2: a guy that's going to hit 300 also. And, um,
- 9:33Speaker 2: you know, that's just, he, he's always said it, that's
- 9:36Speaker 2: his standard. Uh, anything below that is not up to
- 9:39Speaker 2: his standard and that's how he feels. And, You know,
- 9:42Speaker 2: he's been doing that for a very, very long time.
- 9:44Speaker 1: For a long time. But you've watched him for years now.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Do you think he could hit 40 if he said
- 9:50Speaker 1: and put his mind to it? I want to hit
- 9:51Speaker 1: 40 homers. Obviously, those things would kind of go down
- 9:54Speaker 1: a little bit. Or do you think that's maybe not
- 9:57Speaker 1: possible for everybody? He would have to.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Change his swing, but he could easily hit 40. That,
- 10:03Speaker 2: that power is no doubt in there. Um, but he
- 10:06Speaker 2: would have to change his approach and his swing. And, uh,
- 10:09Speaker 2: he's never going to do that. But if he ever
- 10:11Speaker 2: had a year where he's just going to show up
- 10:13Speaker 2: and be like, yeah, I'm going to try to hit
- 10:15Speaker 2: 50 home runs this year. He could easily do it. Um,
- 10:18Speaker 2: That power is in there. He's going to tell you
- 10:20Speaker 2: it's not, but when you watch him hit the ball,
- 10:22Speaker 2: he hits it so hard all the time. That's just
- 10:26Speaker 2: something that not everyone has in them. He's hitting balls
- 10:28Speaker 2: 112 into the gap. If he just changes his swing
- 10:32Speaker 2: and he gets a little more loft on that, he
- 10:34Speaker 2: would hit 40 home runs without a doubt.
- 10:37Speaker 1: AJ knows what I'm talking about, and you've watched it.
- 10:39Speaker 1: He would hit the ball. He was one of those
- 10:40Speaker 1: guys that would hit the ball, and you wouldn't see
- 10:43Speaker 1: it from behind the dish. It just means that he
- 10:45Speaker 1: hit it perfectly square more than Anybody besides Howie Kendrick?
- 10:49Speaker 1: I know that's a random name, but anyway, Howie Kendrick
- 10:51Speaker 1: always felt like squared the ball up. But my question
- 10:55Speaker 1: is for the guy that he replaced last night, Shohei.
- 10:58Speaker 1: When there's a guy like Shohei, obviously you've mentioned it
- 11:00Speaker 1: so many times. He does his own thing because he
- 11:02Speaker 1: has so many things, his regimen, all that stuff. When
- 11:05Speaker 1: he's not in a lineup, do you go up to him?
- 11:08Speaker 1: Do guys go up to him? to check on him?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Do you just kind of let him be? Is it,
- 11:14Speaker 1: how does he handle those days and how do you
- 11:16Speaker 1: guys as good teammates and friends handle those days?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Uh, yes. Um, yeah, you know, you, you, you, you
- 11:26Speaker 2: let him be like, I mean, you just, you don't
- 11:29Speaker 2: do anything different. He's, he's part of the team. You,
- 11:31Speaker 2: you interact with him when he's there. Uh, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 2: he's always trying to do his thing, make sure he's
- 11:36Speaker 2: ready to go. And, He had the cleats on last night.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He was ready to come in if he needed to.
- 11:41Speaker 2: He was actually having a good time last night. He
- 11:43Speaker 2: had an infielder glove out there trying to protect Dino
- 11:46Speaker 2: from line drives into the dugout. I was having a
- 11:51Speaker 2: little fun whenever I threw the ball in. I was
- 11:53Speaker 2: acting like I was pitching to Shohei. We were having
- 11:55Speaker 2: a little fun last night. The answer is yes. You
- 11:59Speaker 2: just do all the above. You don't act like it's
- 12:03Speaker 2: any other day. He's part of the team. He You
- 12:07Speaker 2: talk to him. You have fun with him. And then,
- 12:09Speaker 2: you know, he does his thing. You let him do
- 12:10Speaker 2: his thing. But it's not like you do anything different now.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Well, one guy that's part of the team now is
- 12:17Speaker 1: Tarek Skubal. How's he fitting in? He pitched pretty well
- 12:21Speaker 1: last night. He's doing okay. It's like every start he
- 12:23Speaker 1: gets a little bit better, a little bit better, a
- 12:25Speaker 1: little bit better. Does he fit in okay? I mean,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm sure he does. A two-time Cy Young Award winner.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Lefty throws 100. I mean, I feel like he'll fit
- 12:32Speaker 1: in good on any team.
- 12:34Speaker 2: He fits in amazingly. Um, yeah, he keeps getting better.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And I think part of that is us learning, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 2: how he likes to navigate the games and, um, you know, he,
- 12:45Speaker 2: he's been with the same group of guys for his
- 12:47Speaker 2: entire career. And then you come to a new spot and,
- 12:50Speaker 2: you know, not only does he have to learn, we
- 12:52Speaker 2: have to learn how he does things also. And, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: a lot of times that's, that's what pitches he likes
- 12:57Speaker 2: to throw in certain situations, how he navigates games, how
- 13:00Speaker 2: he taps guys and, I feel like each game he's
- 13:02Speaker 2: gone out there, we've been more and more on the
- 13:05Speaker 2: same page with that. The only way I'd say he
- 13:10Speaker 2: maybe doesn't fit in is he's super normal on his
- 13:12Speaker 2: start days. He'll come up and talk to you and
- 13:16Speaker 2: you wouldn't even know that he's starting. He'll joke around
- 13:18Speaker 2: with you. You guys know what I'm talking about. Starting
- 13:20Speaker 2: pitchers on their start day tend to have a special routine.
- 13:27Speaker 2: He's just the most normal person ever on his start day.
- 13:29Speaker 2: He just... He's joking around. He's talking to guys. At
- 13:32Speaker 2: no point is he ever like, all right, I got
- 13:33Speaker 2: to lock it. Leave me alone. He's just, even in
- 13:36Speaker 2: between innings, he'll be in there just cracking jokes. And
- 13:38Speaker 2: it's like, this is not what we're used to from
- 13:41Speaker 2: our starting pitchers. When our starting pitchers are going, it's usually,
- 13:44Speaker 2: you know, code red, stay away, let them do their thing.
- 13:47Speaker 2: But he's the complete opposite. So if there is a
- 13:50Speaker 2: way he doesn't fit in, I would say that. And
- 13:51Speaker 2: that's just as a joking manner.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Two things on what you just said. One, Scooble is amazing.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Last year in the playoffs when we had him, he
- 13:59Speaker 1: pitched twice. And before the game, you know, we go
- 14:01Speaker 1: in the clubhouse, and he walks right up and gives
- 14:03Speaker 1: me a hug, says hi. And I'm like, dude, aren't
- 14:05Speaker 1: you starting today? He's like, yeah, yeah. It's just another day.
- 14:08Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, that's, like you said, very different.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. It's very weird. It's very weird. It's not normal.
- 14:15Speaker 1: And it reminds me of Mark Burley. Mark Burley was
- 14:17Speaker 1: the same way. And then the second thing that you
- 14:20Speaker 1: said that was interesting is you said we do scouting reports.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Are you in on those meetings? Are you in on
- 14:25Speaker 1: the scouting report meetings? Because you said we a couple
- 14:27Speaker 1: of times. I'm like, oh, Max is breaking down film.
- 14:30Speaker 1: He's telling them what pitch to throw.
- 14:32Speaker 2: No, I say we as an organization. I'm not involved
- 14:35Speaker 2: in any of that. But, you know, that's just I
- 14:39Speaker 2: always say we as an organization. Yeah, I have nothing
- 14:42Speaker 2: to do with those meetings. Come on, man.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Never know hey we let your main die call pitches
- 14:46Speaker 1: for uh mark burley from right field sometimes so i
- 14:49Speaker 1: don't know if you're out there at third base like
- 14:50Speaker 1: curveball curveball fastball you know i mean i.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Don't i don't know if the i don't know if
- 14:55Speaker 2: the game would go too well if i was the
- 14:56Speaker 2: one doing that um the only the only time i
- 15:00Speaker 2: would say it would go good is you know as
- 15:01Speaker 2: a as a pitcher and catcher sometimes it's hard to
- 15:04Speaker 2: read the swing um and so you know from from
- 15:08Speaker 2: third base and shortstop me and mook will sit there
- 15:10Speaker 2: and Sometimes I'll just be like, that's maybe not the
- 15:13Speaker 2: best pitch to call because he's in between speeds or
- 15:15Speaker 2: something like that. But no, overall, if I was involved
- 15:20Speaker 2: in those, they probably wouldn't go too well.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You've never called any pitches. Will Smith or no Rortved,
- 15:27Speaker 1: even Barnsley, none of them ever said, hey, you want
- 15:30Speaker 1: to call a couple pitches this inning?
- 15:33Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Ask him.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Look, there's always been I've always been the emergency catcher
- 15:42Speaker 2: and I've never wanted to get back there. And I
- 15:44Speaker 2: feel like if at any point they start letting me
- 15:47Speaker 2: call pitches and they're like, yeah, why don't you just
- 15:48Speaker 2: get back there? And, you know, that's that's something that
- 15:50Speaker 2: I have no desire to do.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you you hit you hit too good to

- 16:57Speaker 1: there anything we're talking about? One last thing on Scooble.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Was there anything that you've seen him like you said
- 17:03Speaker 1: he came from one organization that he came in and
- 17:06Speaker 1: was like, you guys got this many of this or whoa,
- 17:10Speaker 1: this is so cool. Has he been to like a
- 17:12Speaker 1: kid in a candy store with anything?
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah, a little bit, but I mean, that's not, that's
- 17:19Speaker 2: just because every organization does things differently. And that's not
- 17:22Speaker 2: saying one does it any better than the other. Obviously
- 17:24Speaker 2: I think we do it the best, but like, you know,
- 17:28Speaker 2: it's just every organization does things differently. And I think,
- 17:30Speaker 2: you know, one of the obvious ones for him was
- 17:34Speaker 2: you come in and the players have their own plane
- 17:37Speaker 2: with how we travel. And, you know, that was a
- 17:39Speaker 2: big one for him, especially with, uh, You know, the
- 17:43Speaker 2: rumor we had heard from Detroit was they have a
- 17:45Speaker 2: new plane now, but the old plane they used to
- 17:47Speaker 2: have couldn't fly cross country. They'd have to stop halfway
- 17:50Speaker 2: and refill, you know, so for the players.
- 17:55Speaker 1: You guys haven't heard that one before? No way. There's
- 17:59Speaker 1: the Red Wing. It was the Red Wing Tiger plane.
- 18:03Speaker 1: It couldn't go all the way across country.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I think they got a new one a couple of
- 18:07Speaker 2: years ago, maybe. But yeah, you know, that was always
- 18:10Speaker 2: the rumor we'd heard. And he confirmed it was that,
- 18:11Speaker 2: you know, if the flight was longer than like four
- 18:14Speaker 2: hours or something like that, they'd have to stop halfway
- 18:16Speaker 2: and refill because the aviation rules are you have to
- 18:21Speaker 2: have a certain amount of fuel when you land. And
- 18:24Speaker 2: the plane would be under that threshold. It wouldn't be
- 18:27Speaker 2: out of fuel, but it'd just be under the threshold
- 18:28Speaker 2: for the aviation rules.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Huh. That's interesting. I love that. First of all, I
- 18:35Speaker 1: don't want any plane underneath the aviation fuel limit. Cause
- 18:39Speaker 1: you never know. Sometimes you're going to make that circle.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I don't want that thing to be like, you know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: sometimes you get to, you get in your car and
- 18:44Speaker 1: it says like two miles and you're, you're like, am
- 18:46Speaker 1: I going to make the gap? I don't want that
- 18:48Speaker 1: in a plane, like a car. I can just kind of,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I mean.
- 18:51Speaker 2: The other thing though, I mean, they're in the central.
- 18:52Speaker 2: So I think that only would happen like once or
- 18:54Speaker 2: twice a season. You know, when you're in the central, your,
- 18:57Speaker 2: your flights are real short. You're not making a whole
- 18:59Speaker 2: lot of cross country flights on like, you know, every
- 19:01Speaker 2: flight we make is literally cross country. So it's, it's,
- 19:04Speaker 2: it's not the same.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Very true. Very true. I heard the Marlins one time
- 19:08Speaker 1: had a plane that didn't have air conditioning on it.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Yelly told me about it. He had like him and
- 19:12Speaker 1: Jeff Mathis, but never like having to land and then
- 19:16Speaker 1: take the bird back up in the air.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Well, I mean that, that happens more often than you
- 19:20Speaker 2: think that's happened to us a couple of times where
- 19:22Speaker 2: the AC just broke and you know, there's nothing you
- 19:24Speaker 2: can do about it. You just have to kind of
- 19:26Speaker 2: wear it. Um, I remember one time, this was years ago,
- 19:29Speaker 2: we had a flight out of Arizona and the AC
- 19:34Speaker 2: wouldn't work until we got the plane into the air.
- 19:36Speaker 2: So we had to sit on the bus until the
- 19:39Speaker 2: plane was fully loaded, ready to go. We sprinted up
- 19:42Speaker 2: the steps, they closed the door and we took off
- 19:44Speaker 2: and it was about 120 degrees on that plane. That
- 19:48Speaker 2: kind of stuff happens all the time. It's just machines.
- 19:52Speaker 2: They don't always work exactly how you want them to,
- 19:54Speaker 2: but you kind of have to deal with it. That's
- 19:58Speaker 2: part of the grind of baseball is the travel. You're
- 20:02Speaker 2: traveling so much and you're doing it so often that
- 20:05Speaker 2: not everything goes perfect all the time.
- 20:08Speaker 1: As your travel director told us, Scott Akasaki, when he
- 20:11Speaker 1: was on here, you guys have two planes now. So
- 20:14Speaker 1: if one doesn't have AC, you guys can get on
- 20:16Speaker 1: the cooler plane and make it out there. But I
- 20:20Speaker 1: got to ask you, what does it feel like? And
- 20:23Speaker 1: do you think about it? Did you think about it
- 20:25Speaker 1: when you were getting close to milestones? For instance, milestones
- 20:30Speaker 1: for home runs, milestones for this season and your contract
- 20:34Speaker 1: over a certain amount of plate appearances, then another bonus season.
- 20:37Speaker 1: kicks in, do you think about it or all of
- 20:40Speaker 1: a sudden do you look up at the scoreboard and go,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Holy cow, I passed that. Obviously the home runs are
- 20:45Speaker 1: a little bit different. Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Um, I try not to think about it. Um, you know,
- 20:52Speaker 2: the home runs, you obviously have those in the back
- 20:54Speaker 2: of your head, you know, you're approaching certain guys and
- 20:57Speaker 2: you're approaching certain spots on the leaderboard. Um, you know, the,
- 21:01Speaker 2: the incentives one, uh, I knew I had that one
- 21:04Speaker 2: built in. I didn't know when it was going to
- 21:06Speaker 2: kick in. Um, cause I don't pay, I don't pay
- 21:08Speaker 2: attention to how many play appearances I have, but, uh,
- 21:11Speaker 2: you know, that, that was, that was a fun one
- 21:13Speaker 2: for me. And the guys have been having a lot
- 21:14Speaker 2: of fun with that one. Um, you know, if I
- 21:18Speaker 2: have a pop-up, they go out, that sucks. You just
- 21:21Speaker 2: made a certain amount of money on the pop-up. No
- 21:22Speaker 2: big deal. But, uh, uh, yeah, it, I try not
- 21:26Speaker 2: to pay attention to that. Cause then I just feel
- 21:27Speaker 2: like you're putting on, on necessary pressure on yourself that,
- 21:32Speaker 2: you know, we already have so much pressure playing where
- 21:34Speaker 2: we're at right now that you don't need to add
- 21:36Speaker 2: any more to it.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Okay. So I got to ask, first of all, if
- 21:41Speaker 1: I don't, I'm going to bring this up and you know, whatever,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you're real close to being the all time Dodger leader
- 21:46Speaker 1: in home runs. Did you know that?
- 21:49Speaker 2: The LA Dodger?
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm, I'm, I'm quite a ways away from Duke
- 21:55Speaker 2: Snyder who all of his were in Brooklyn. So, but yeah,
- 22:00Speaker 2: For the LA Dodgers, yeah, I'm getting close to EK.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I know that. He always jokes around about it. Like
- 22:09Speaker 2: I said, I try not to think about it. Obviously,
- 22:10Speaker 2: you do. It's impossible not to, but that'd be a
- 22:14Speaker 2: pretty cool one for me to get if I'm able
- 22:18Speaker 2: to do that.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Okay. That was kind of my point is I know
- 22:21Speaker 1: EK very well. He's going to be pissed. If you
- 22:23Speaker 1: break that record, he's going to, he's going to say, Oh, Max,
- 22:26Speaker 1: I'm so happy for you, but he's deep down. He's
- 22:28Speaker 1: going to be pissed. I know. Cause if you asked
- 22:30Speaker 1: a lot of people who the, who the LA Dodgers
- 22:33Speaker 1: home run record was, I don't know that a lot
- 22:35Speaker 1: of people outside of hardcore Dodger fans would know that
- 22:39Speaker 1: it's Eric Karros.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Um, I don't know. I think you'd be surprised. A
- 22:44Speaker 2: lot of Dodger fans know that it's Eric Karros. Um,
- 22:49Speaker 2: He played so well for so long in Los Angeles,
- 22:53Speaker 2: Rookie of the Year. I believe he was the first
- 22:56Speaker 2: one of the four or five in a row that
- 22:59Speaker 2: the Dodgers had. I can't remember the order of it,
- 23:02Speaker 2: but they had a really good stretch there where they
- 23:06Speaker 2: had four or five Rookie of the Year in a row.
- 23:10Speaker 2: He was just such a solid piece in the order
- 23:13Speaker 2: for them for so many years. I know Dodger fans
- 23:17Speaker 2: still still love him very, very much. And so I, I,
- 23:20Speaker 2: I bet you most of them would know that he's
- 23:22Speaker 2: the leader.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah. Hardcore Dodger fans. But if you ask Joe
- 23:27Speaker 1: Schmoe off the streets, he wouldn't know it. And also
- 23:29Speaker 1: before Mike Trout came along, he was the all time
- 23:31Speaker 1: leader in home runs from a guy from New Jersey.
- 23:34Speaker 1: So we have some New Jersey people on this show
- 23:36Speaker 1: that would not have guessed that either.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Cause I would not have known. I would not have
- 23:39Speaker 2: known that he, I didn't know he was from New Jersey.
- 23:41Speaker 2: He just, he seems like he fits in with California
- 23:44Speaker 2: so well that I would have, I would have bet
- 23:45Speaker 2: that he was from California.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he was born in New Jersey, but he's
- 23:49Speaker 1: a Manhattan Beach guy, so he's got the hair, the
- 23:51Speaker 1: whole deal.
- 23:52Speaker 2: The flow is great. The flow is great on him still.
- 23:56Speaker 1: All right, before we let you go, I know the
- 23:58Speaker 1: crowd says one more question. Ken Rosenthal did a great
- 24:01Speaker 1: article on you about the A's and how your journey
- 24:03Speaker 1: went through the A's, and you know, you were going
- 24:05Speaker 1: to be a first baseman, but you might've been an outfielder.
- 24:08Speaker 1: You might've been a catcher, whatever it is. Can I
- 24:10Speaker 1: just say this? I would have loved to have seen
- 24:12Speaker 1: you run around the outfield. That would have been fun
- 24:13Speaker 1: as hell for me to watch. It would have been,
- 24:15Speaker 1: it would have been just like if I had to
- 24:16Speaker 1: play the outfit, except you're way more athletic and you
- 24:18Speaker 1: would have dominated me in the outfield. But like, if
- 24:20Speaker 1: they would have come to me and say, you want
- 24:21Speaker 1: to play the outfit? I would've been like, uh, maybe.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Hey, I had about a solid month in right field
- 24:26Speaker 2: there when, uh, Josh Reddick broke his thumb or his
- 24:29Speaker 2: wrist or something. I can't remember. He got hurt. I
- 24:31Speaker 2: can't remember what it was, but I played about a
- 24:32Speaker 2: solid month. And, uh, in right field. And that was
- 24:35Speaker 2: in numbers wise, that was actually my most consistent time
- 24:39Speaker 2: when I was in Oakland. Um, I think for that
- 24:41Speaker 2: month I hit like two 50 with two or three
- 24:43Speaker 2: home runs, uh, uh, kind of basically doing what I
- 24:47Speaker 2: was doing now. And then when Reddit came back, I,
- 24:49Speaker 2: you know, I, I, I got the boot and that's
- 24:52Speaker 2: more than understandable. And, um, but you know, that was
- 24:56Speaker 2: when I was actually playing my best and most consistent
- 24:58Speaker 2: when I, when I was playing right field in Oakland. Um,
- 25:00Speaker 2: and I felt like, you know what, I felt like
- 25:01Speaker 2: I did a really good job out there. Um, I
- 25:03Speaker 2: don't know what the metrics say, Um, I know the
- 25:05Speaker 2: metrics hated me when they put me in left, but,
- 25:09Speaker 2: you know, I felt way more comfortable in right field.
- 25:11Speaker 2: And I think that had to do with the fact
- 25:12Speaker 2: that my entire career up to that point had been
- 25:15Speaker 2: spent on the right side of the infield, whether it
- 25:17Speaker 2: was first base or second base. And, um, you know,
- 25:20Speaker 2: I think just, you see the ball a certain way, um,
- 25:25Speaker 2: on certain sides of the field, whereas, you know, now
- 25:27Speaker 2: I bet if I got put in left field, I'd
- 25:29Speaker 2: probably be better than if I was in right field
- 25:30Speaker 2: because I've spent so much time on the left side
- 25:31Speaker 2: of the infield over the last, you know, five, six years.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Kratz football season is back and Fabletics knows all about it.
- 25:39Speaker 3: They just paired with the number one wide receiver in

- 26:35Speaker 1: Shoot. Think about if you had played that whole time,
- 26:38Speaker 1: how long of a run that would have been to
- 26:39Speaker 1: right field in Oakland. That would have been terrible. Oh,
- 26:42Speaker 1: my gosh.
- 26:43Speaker 2: But I didn't care back then. You know, I was
- 26:45Speaker 2: happy to be playing.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You wanted to be in the big leagues. It's better
- 26:48Speaker 1: than being in Sacramento. Oh, wait a minute. Anyway, but
- 26:53Speaker 1: my question, last question for you is how– identical your
- 26:58Speaker 1: left and right splits are versus lefties versus righties. And
- 27:03Speaker 1: maybe it's a product of this season. Things are going
- 27:05Speaker 1: a certain way. What do you attribute it to? Is it,
- 27:09Speaker 1: are you a traject guy? Is it just because you're
- 27:12Speaker 1: older and you've had tons of reps and you're no
- 27:14Speaker 1: longer just a strictly platoon besides when sale pitches, which
- 27:18Speaker 1: is a good day to take off. What do you
- 27:20Speaker 1: think attributes to it?
- 27:22Speaker 2: Um, This year, I think we had some injuries to
- 27:26Speaker 2: certain guys that would normally play against lefties, and so
- 27:31Speaker 2: I got a little bit more at-bats off left-handed starters.
- 27:36Speaker 2: In the past, when I played every day, I always
- 27:38Speaker 2: felt like that was when I did well, was when
- 27:42Speaker 2: I faced a left-handed starter. Because you're getting two or
- 27:45Speaker 2: three at-bats off the same guy, and The starter mix
- 27:49Speaker 2: is obviously a lot different than a reliever mix. And
- 27:52Speaker 2: unless you're facing a guy like Sale, then it's just
- 27:54Speaker 2: like you're facing a closer the entire game. But in
- 27:58Speaker 2: the past, when I wouldn't start against the lefties, I
- 28:03Speaker 2: would still face the left-handed bullpen guys. And their only
- 28:06Speaker 2: job in the big leagues is to get left-handers out.
- 28:09Speaker 2: And so me not having great numbers against lefties, it's like, well,
- 28:13Speaker 2: that should be understandable. I'm having to face... the only
- 28:17Speaker 2: lefty I'm getting to face is Jojo Romero or Jake
- 28:20Speaker 2: Deakman or, you know, guys like that. And it's kind
- 28:22Speaker 2: of like, those are hard guys to get hits off
- 28:24Speaker 2: of for anybody. You know, you look at what Freddie
- 28:27Speaker 2: or Shohei does against those guys and it's, and it's
- 28:29Speaker 2: not great either. You know, so this year, you know,
- 28:32Speaker 2: with the injury to Kike and, and, and a couple
- 28:36Speaker 2: other guys who would normally take that playing time, you know,
- 28:40Speaker 2: I had to be slobbed in there against a little
- 28:42Speaker 2: bit more lefties. And I, I just feel like when
- 28:44Speaker 2: you face a left-handed starter, you're, going to have a
- 28:46Speaker 2: little bit more success than uh when you're just facing
- 28:49Speaker 2: the bullpen guys and um you know that's just kind
- 28:52Speaker 2: of how it's gone for me this year i just
- 28:53Speaker 2: feel like you get more reps you get more comfortable
- 28:56Speaker 2: you get you know you're not you're not diving out
- 29:00Speaker 2: as much when you're a little more comfortable seeing that
- 29:02Speaker 2: ball come closer to you and um you know for
- 29:05Speaker 2: me that's just really been been all it is is
- 29:07Speaker 2: uh you just get to get more comfortable with.
- 29:10Speaker 1: It by the way thank you for saying that. I
- 29:13Speaker 1: used to get so mad when I wouldn't play. And
- 29:16Speaker 1: then they'd be like the eighth inning and they had
- 29:18Speaker 1: the lefty warming up and they'd say, Hey, go pinch
- 29:21Speaker 1: hit for the, you know, the backup catcher in the
- 29:23Speaker 1: eighth inning. And I'm like, but you know, the lefty's
- 29:26Speaker 1: coming in to face me and we like those chances better.
- 29:29Speaker 1: And then they'd say, well, you don't really hit lefties
- 29:31Speaker 1: well late. Well, I've sat there for eight innings and
- 29:33Speaker 1: then they bring in some side-arming lefty that's throwing sliders
- 29:37Speaker 1: that break 400 feet across the plate or throw a hundred. Oh,
- 29:41Speaker 1: I don't know why I can't hit these guys. I don't, I,
- 29:43Speaker 1: it's like, ah, so thank you for saying that.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Those guys are tough on righties also. And you know,
- 29:50Speaker 2: it's like they're, they get righties out, but their whole
- 29:53Speaker 2: job is to get lefties out. Like that's the whole
- 29:55Speaker 2: reason they're in the bullpen is they come in to
- 29:57Speaker 2: get lefties out. Um, that's what they're supposed to do. And,
- 30:01Speaker 2: you know, and that's just, uh, you know, I've had
- 30:05Speaker 2: so many conversations with Doc that, you know, we both
- 30:08Speaker 2: agree that it's never been a platoon for me. It's just,
- 30:11Speaker 2: we have guys that are on the roster to hit lefties.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And that's also a good chance to give me, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 2: half a game off or even a full game off
- 30:20Speaker 2: and just keep me healthy for the entire season. And
- 30:22Speaker 2: that's something that we've been really, you know, kind of
- 30:24Speaker 2: focused on this year is trying to stay healthy for
- 30:26Speaker 2: the whole year. And, um, And, you know, that was
- 30:29Speaker 2: always an easy way to do it of being like, well,
- 30:31Speaker 2: let's get you, you know, you might come in and
- 30:33Speaker 2: face the righty later in the game. So let's get you,
- 30:36Speaker 2: you know, five or six innings off your feet. And
- 30:38Speaker 2: that way you're ready to go for the last two
- 30:39Speaker 2: or three innings. And we'll get you a favorable matchup.
- 30:42Speaker 2: But yeah, so I want to make that very clear
- 30:46Speaker 2: that like we've never felt like it's been a platoon,
- 30:49Speaker 2: even though it kind of looks like it. It's just
- 30:50Speaker 2: it's a way to help keep me healthy.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Wow. max keep doing what you're doing on and off
- 30:56Speaker 1: the field man you're one of our favorite guests for
- 30:58Speaker 1: real you always come on you're always solid uh thank
- 31:01Speaker 1: you for helping my son with his glasses he's my
- 31:03Speaker 1: son's gonna be rocking.
- 31:04Speaker 4: The max hey did he get him yet he got
- 31:08Speaker 4: him the other day he didn't get oakley's though he
- 31:09Speaker 4: got some other company i don't know what they're called
- 31:11Speaker 4: but he liked them the way they remember you're telling
- 31:13Speaker 4: me that so he's he got him uh when i
- 31:15Speaker 4: just saw him i was in vegas with him this
- 31:17Speaker 4: weekend i delivered them to him so i can't wait
- 31:19Speaker 4: for him to wear them on the field and tell
- 31:20Speaker 4: me how they go so so you know max thank
- 31:22Speaker 4: you well thank you.
- 31:23Speaker 2: So much just Yeah. Like, I mean, just remember, like
- 31:26Speaker 2: I tried to tell him, it's going to take him
- 31:27Speaker 2: a couple of weeks to get used to those things. It's, uh, uh,
- 31:30Speaker 2: you know, it took me a solid month, maybe a
- 31:32Speaker 2: month and a half just to, you know, finally feel
- 31:34Speaker 2: like I got to throw them on and there was
- 31:36Speaker 2: no difference, but, uh, yeah, it's going to take some time.
- 31:38Speaker 2: He's just got to stick with it and, you know,
- 31:40Speaker 2: they'll help him out for sure.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, thank you again. I mean, between you and
- 31:43Speaker 1: Tommy fam, you guys should be eye doctors as much
- 31:45Speaker 1: as I've talked to you all about glasses and contacts
- 31:47Speaker 1: and stuff. I appreciate, I appreciate, I appreciate both of
- 31:52Speaker 1: you guys.
